AmericA’s cup comes to portsmouth SIR Keith Mills GBE has announced the return of America’s Cup Racing to British waters when the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) takes place in Portsmouth from 23-26th July 2015 and 21–24th July 2016. Sir Keith, who was also Deputy Chairman of London 2012 and Chairman of ‘Invictus Games’, explained further, “I’m passionate about bringing world-class sporting events to Great Britain, and am delighted that America’s Cup World Series racing will be coming to Portsmouth. This will

not just be a spectacular sporting event, it will also showcase Portsmouth, the South Coast and Great Britain on a global stage, delivering economic benefit to the City and the sponsors involved. The series will attract huge crowds to watch the exhilarating racing and we plan to give the event a festival feel bringing activities and entertainment for all. Our plans are for more than two action packed long weekends. We are also putting together a three year activation programme running right up until the end of the 35th
America’s Cup in 2017. We look forward to delivering a world class sporting event for Great Britain.” The ACWS is the preliminary race series of the 35th America’s Cup, consisting of eight to ten regattas taking place around the world during 2015 and 2016. All America’s Cup teams will compete in the series and their overall placement will affect the seeding and starting score they take into the America’s Cup Qualifier events in 2017. Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) is the British
challenger for the 35th America’s Cup, and have their home base in Portsmouth. Team Principal and four-time Olympic gold medallist, Sir Ben Ainslie said, “A key part of BAR’s plans was to bring America’s Cup racing to Great Britain and I would like to thank Sir Keith and his team for making those plans become a reality. The last ACWS was a game changer for the sport of sailing, the racing was entertaining and brought in the crowds. The new foiling AC45s are going to be faster and even more exciting than the previous generation and we promise to
provide an event experience like you have never seen before – come and cheer us on!” One of the key objectives of the organisers of ACWS Portsmouth will be to bring the action to the public with ‘freeto-view’ areas in the Race Village where spectators can enjoy the atmosphere, and watch the racing. Further ticketing information will be released in the New Year. The count down to the 2015 ACWS Portsmouth has started, for more information: visit www.teamorigin.com www.americascup.com
WALKER HANGS ON TO WIN LEG 1 FROM PAGE 1 Britain’s Ian Walker and his Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, aboard Azzam, were in celebratory mood after clinching an epic first leg victory in the Volvo Ocean Race. When they set out from Alicante on October 11th Ian and his team could never have predicted how close the finish would be. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing could feel the Dongfeng Race Team (Charles Caudrelier/ FRA) gaining on them for the best part of a week in the 6,487-nautical mile stage. Even with the finish under Table Mountain in Cape Town just 2nm away, Walker could not relax, and they eventually crossed the line just 12 minutes before Dongfeng, after 25 days, three hours and 10 minutes of sailing. Walker, red-eyed after sleep deprivation for so long, was finally able to celebrate surely one of the sweetest wins of a career that also includes two Olympic silver medals. “It’s quite emotional actually,” Walker told Race HQ, minutes after crossing the line. “I didn’t think I would be - but that last couple of hours, they threw everything at us,” he smiled, “We’ve had people ride on our heels for the last 10 days or so. I must congratulate Dongfeng, an absolutely fantastic performance.” In contrast, Caudrelier looked like he had
thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the chase and the opportunity to prove a point to those who doubted that his crew, which included two Chinese rookies, could seriously compete at the front of the fleet. Dongfeng Race Team’s second place was all the more remarkable since their progress was twice slowed through damage to the boat; first with a smashed rudder and then through a shattered padeye, which caused a dominoeffect of damage including a broken wheel. However, Walker and his team had sailed too well for too long to give victory away after such a struggle, and the crowd packing Cape Town’s famous V&A Waterfront gave them a reception they will never forget. In a further boost to the team’s confidence Azzam went on to win Cape Town’s in-port race on 15th November. Of the in-port victory Walker said, “The conditions were very difficult. We had a little bit of luck at the start, which isn’t what we were planning at all, but there was a massive wind shift and we reacted to it first. We had a strong start but it was so shifty and the winds so variable that the race was never over.” As we went to press the teams were just days into the 6,125 nautical-mile second leg from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi. While Azzam is favourite to arrive first, around December 9th, tropical storms in the Indian Ocean

are expected to make for a very tough second leg. Race organisers took late measures to keep the 66 sailors away from the very worst of the weather on the Indian Ocean with a new exclusion zone leading to the
Seychelles. There were already zones in place to avoid icebergs in the Southern Ocean and the more unlikely menace of pirate attacks further down the route on the east coast of the Indian Ocean. www.volvooceanrace.com Sir Dave Brailsford and team. Credit RYA

Firstly i’d like to say how good it feels to be back in the editor’s seat of a much-loved boating publication. After many years at the helm of Boat Mart, before taking a break to raise two new budding sailors, i’m enjoying this latest challenge. thank you to Georgie Corlett for doing such an amazing job with All At sea; i know from what you’ve been telling me that she will be much missed, but i’m sure you will join me in wishing her all the best in her future endeavours. While i won’t be making any major changes to All At sea, there will a few tweaks here and there. We have already taken on board many of your suggestions and ideas, but keep them coming in to editor@allatsea.co.uk. this is your paper after all and your opinions really do matter. We love to hear from you, the readers. Whether it’s a boating story, fantastic photos, questions or just a comment about something in the paper please drop us a line. We will do our very best to reply to you, and you might even be in the next paper or on our website (www.allatsea.co.uk). Email is the best way to send photographs as we can’t guarantee to return items sent through the post. Back to this edition, the last of 2014. inevitably there is a little reminiscing this month. it has been another incredible year for UK sailing. We’ve had the biggest Push the Boat Out event ever, the hugely successful Bart’s Bash, Giles scott’s Finn Olympic Class World Championship, Natasha lambert’s inspirational challenge and the Volvo Ocean race is making headlines as i write. the first leg saw an incredibly
close finish, and we’re sure there’s plenty more drama to come. send us your 2014 ‘best bits’ in an email with ‘2014 Highlights’ as the subject header and we’ll feature some next month. include a photo too if you can. Back to the latest news and this year’s champions were crowned at the 2014 ryA Olympic Classes National ranking series. it is wonderful to have a sport where the British sailing team competes alongside future stars and clubs sailors. What a fantastic way to inspire future champions and bring the sport together. Unfortunately, the final weekend of this event, in November, also highlighted the one thing we have no control over – the weather. 30-35 knots on the sunday prevented any further action from taking place. We can’t have it all can we… Christmas is just around the corner, and so in our kit pages we have some lovely gift ideas including a round-up of nautical books with truly incredible photographs. turn to page 15 to find out more. there’s also plenty of show news this month; great for those not on the water at the moment. the london Boat show is just a matter of weeks away, but more on that in our January issue, and tickets are now available for the ever-popular ryA suzuki Dinghy show which kicks off on February 28th. We’ll bring you more on these and many other events when we introduce our new events guide next month too. For now, though, i’ll leave you to enjoy this action packed paper. Have a wonderful Christmas and see you all in the New year. editor@allatsea.co.uk

Giles Scott cruised to event victory and the overall series crown
BritisH sailing team members topped the leaderboards when Hayling island sailing Club staged the third and final instalment of the 2014 ryA Olympic Classes National ranking series in early November. two great weekends of racing at the Weymouth and Portland National sailing Academy in October had set the stage for a thrilling series finale at Hayling island, where event honours were at stake in the Finn, 470, 49er, 49erFX and rs:X fleets. sailors completed the full schedule of racing on saturday in 15-20 knots and glorious sunshine, while 30-35 knots on sunday prevented any further action from taking place. A compulsory series for British sailing team members, the three weekends of racing provided the perfect opportunity for the nation’s finest Olympic and Paralympic Classes sailors to fine tune their racing skills, while also giving aspiring stars of the future, local club sailors and class stalwarts the opportunity to test their skills against the best of the best. in the heavyweight Finn class, it was the British sailing team’s World and European
Champion Giles scott who made light work of the challenging fleet as he cruised to event victory and the overall series crown. Competing against a 16-strong fleet, the isAF rolex World sailor of the year nominee took a clean sweep of race wins to finish four points clear of former British sailing team member Andrew Mills. luke Patience and Elliot Willis also saw an unblemished scorecard in the 470 fleet, taking all five race wins on saturday. Anna Burnet and Flora stewart finished the weekend in second overall, enough to give the Podium Potential sailors the overall series crown. Mike Wood, who has competed across the three events with stand-in crews Eilidh Mcintyre and Katie tomsett, claimed the National ranking title with a fourth place finish at the Hayling island event. James Peters and Fynn sterritt dominated proceedings in the 49er class finishing ten points clear at the top of the leaderboard to be crowned 2014 National ranking series Champions. With only three 49erFX boats competing, event honours and the overall series crown went to Owen Bowerman and Morgan Peach who are making an
impressive transition from youth to Olympic Classes sailing. in the rs:X 9.5 windsurfing event, Nick Dempsey rounded his series off in impressive fashion with three race wins resulting in event victory and the overall series crown. Bryony shaw topped the billing in the rs:X 8.5 fleet with three bullets, while second placed izzy Hamilton did enough to claim the series title. Meanwhile, the three Paralympic classes concluded their series in Weymouth and Portland with three races held on saturday and only one race on sunday. Megan Pascoe came out on top in the 2.4mr class with all four race wins to take weekend victory ahead of Paralympic champion Helena lucas. With both Pascoe and lucas missing the opening event of the series, a third place finish at Hayling was enough to give Jonathan Currell the overall 2014 series title. Alexandra rickham and Niki Birrell topped the sKUD 18 fleet while Craig Wood, liam Cattermole and steven Palmer took weekend honours and the series crown in the sonar event. www.britishsailingteam.com/@Britishsailing

tHE route du rhum crown has gone to François Gabart. For their final race, François and his 60-foot MACiF have written a new page in the history of sailing. in every one of his first attempts, François Gabart has managed to achieve success: Vendée Globe 2012: victory and a record in a little over 78 days for the youngest winner of the circumnavigation of the globe. route du rhum 2014: victory and a record in 12 days 4 hours and 38 minutes. Not forgetting a win in the eastbound B to B transatlantic race in 2011, which served as a qualifier for the Vendée Globe.
With his sponsor Macif, François will now focus on his 100-foot oceanic multihull, which is currently being fitted out. the future then for this extraordinary skipper will be coloured by a new story and a whole new set of challenges. British adventurer and Clipper race Founder sir robin KnoxJohnston, 75, was also celebrating after finishing in third place in the rhum class. sir robin said, “i thoroughly enjoyed it. it was quite fantastic. there were three of us battling for the second and third spot. i got competitive and that was tiring. it came down to boat speed. she’s a fast boat i’ve got. i managed to hold onto my lead but i couldn’t beat Andrea Mura (second) despite catching him up.”

ROSE-Y FUTURE
Anyone who followed the build-up to the 2012 olympic Games will remember that one of the biggest hurdles to Ben Ainslie’s historic fourth gold medal was another Brit by the name of Giles Scott. Their rivalry was one of the most compelling stories in the lead-up to the London 2012 olympics with Scott, the apprentice and former training partner, attempting to unseat the dominant figure of the previous generation, and win the single Team GBR place at the
Games. As we know Ainslie eventually won selection and went on to win his fourth gold medal. However, Giles Scott used his time wisely and raced with Luna Rossa in their 2013 America’s Cup campaign, and this summer won the Finn olympic Class World Championship in Santander. Scott is now a firm favourite for gold in Rio 2016 and will also be a key member of the British America’s Cup team, Ben Ainslie Racing.

Almost 20 sailing projects will now be able to begin work on new projects from extending changing rooms to creating new boat storage. For example, Mylor Sailability, in Falmouth, have been awarded over £48,000 for their ‘Let’s get going’ project. They plan to build an accessible base in Mylor harbour with classrooms and training facilities. The funding will also provide a specially adapted pontoon and hoist. “The new classroom and social area will come complete with a sophisticated projector and hearing loop system to enable us to deliver shore based sessions to all participants. It will also create a social area for members and a shelter in bad weather,” explains Tracey Boyne, founder of Mylor Sailability. RyA Sport Development Manager Duncan Truswell added, “We’re extremely grateful for this programme, which has provided a timely boost to improve often ageing and occasionally unsuitable facilities. As demand increases for this fund across all sports, it’s fantastic news that these sailing organisations have been successful with their applications.“ www.sportengland.org

Williams joins all-time list
LOGIC WINS
THE Port Hamble Marina based sailing school, Sailing Logic, have been awarded the prestigious David Fayle Memorial Trophy for the ‘Schoolboat of the Year’ for a record breaking 10th consecutive year, by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. This accolade is awarded to the RYA approved training centre that scores the highest number of points in the RORC IRC Championships throughout the season. This year, Sailing Logic’s brand new Beneteau First 40 ‘Arthur Logic’ was the highest scoring school yacht.
WILLIAMS confirmed his match racing calibre when the quadruple World Champion won an impressive fifth RYA National Match Racing title at Queen Mary Sailing Club over the weekend of 14 – 16th November. Ian joins a unique group of Mark Campbell-James and two-time Olympian and America’s Cup sailor Andy Beadsworth at the top of the all-time winners list with five wins each. The Championships got underway in a light five-six knot breeze on
the Friday with results going very much according to the seedings, but the big match of the afternoon saw Ali Hall beat the world number two and former world champion leaving Williams with it all to do after the opening day’s eight flights of round-robin. With no racing possible on Saturday due to very little wind, Sunday again started with a light five-six knot breeze with the racing more varied with unexpected wins and losses for many of the teams. Williams, and his crew, Gerry Mitchell, Simon Shaw and
the British Keelboat Academy’s James French, found their winning rhythm taking nothing but race wins, while Hall who had led after Friday’s racing with five wins was only able to win one of his four races. The breeze dropped early in the afternoon and the decision was made to finish the programme at the end of the round-robin stage, handing Williams event honours with eight out of nine race wins. A delighted Williams described the result, “It is always satisfying to win any match racing regatta. We were obviously the most experienced team but in match racing it is all about the performance on the day and you’ve still got to get the job done, so we were pleased to come out on top in the end. Conditions were mainly on the light side, but the Race Committee did a great job of getting all the racing away which were good fair races.” Next up for Williams and his GAC Pindar Team are the finals of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour in Malaysia in February where they will be going for a fifth World Title. www.rya.org.uk/racing 2014 RYA National Match Racing Grand Final Results: 1st Ian Williams - Gerry Mitchell, Simon Shaw, James French 2nd Mark Lees - Matt Haslam, James Hemingway, Scott Flannigan 3rd Tom Mallindine - Steve Aiken, James Anderson, Liam Gardener

WINDERMERE IS CHAMPION CLUB
Credit: Simon McIlwaine
FOR the second year running, aspiring young sailors have been awarded their very own boats and windsurfers, donated by the John Merricks sailing Trust (JMsT), the official charity partner of the RYA OnBoard programme. The thirteen youngsters were selected from over 70 applications after competing in the RYA Zone and Home Country Championships. RYA OnBoard Operations Officer, Cat Ferguson, explained, “This is the second year we’ve teamed up with the JMsT to run this scheme which is aimed at helping ambitious young sailors to progress in the sport. These youngsters have all shown huge enthusiasm, talent and commitment to the sport despite some of them being fairly new to sailing. This year we will award six Toppers, three Optimists, three Bic Technos and one Laser.” The boats and boards that the JMsT have donated will provide these sailors, who may not have ordinarily had the opportunity, to progress their skills with the highest quality equipment to continue to participate in sailing.
WINDERMERE school, a co-educational Independent school situated in the heart of the Lake District, has been awarded Champion Club status by the Royal Yachting Association, and in doing so becomes the first school in the UK to achieve this status. As an RYA Champion Club, Windermere school will be entitled to a series of benefits. These include development advice and support to continuously recruit young sailors into the sport at the right age for them to have the best chances of achieving success in the future; recruiting, training and contracting in coaches to support the delivery of club programmes; the accreditation and
branding of an RYA Centre of Excellence and access to the very best coaching resources (including best practice workshops). RYA Champion Clubs are recognised as being ‘Centres of Excellence’ for junior race training and racing and many form the very foundation of the British sailing Teams. since the inception of the original Volvo RYA Champion Club programme in 1997, the scheme has recognised, promoted and invested in clubs which have continually introduced young people into sail racing and encouraged them to progress via good quality race training in a safe and fun environment. www.windermereschool.co.uk

The charter is calling for commitments within the 2015 General Election manifestos for a full network of Marine
Protected Areas in UK seas. While this Parliament has seen the first Marine Conservation Zones established in English seas and scottish Government has designated 30 Nature Conservation MPAs in scottish seas, we remain a long way from the full network. Throughout our seas 35 marine species are still considered threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

A breezy downwind leg (Photo: Sue Pelling)
PIPInG their nearest rivals to the post in the final race of the series was just enough for Matt Burge and Toby Lewis, representing the Osprey class, to secure the 2014 Topper Sailboats-supported Endeavour Championship. A sixth place in the penultimate race for the Osprey team and a third for the Merlin Rocket boys, meant there was just one place between the leading contenders going into the final race. For the Osprey team to win, they had to finish ahead of the Merlin Rocket team. The final race showdown was exciting with Ian Dobson and Holly Scott (GP14) establishing an impressive oneminute lead over Mee and Pygall (Merlin Rocket). Dobson and Scott maintained their position to the finish but in the
closing stages of the race, Burge and Lewis (Osprey) were back in contention after being buried at the start and were able to take advantage of a favourable shift at the final leeward mark and just managed to beat Mee and Pygall across the line. Matt Burge, chatting about the gripping, final race finish, said: “The Merlin boys were beating us all the way round the race course, but we had a phenomenal last run. We then opted for the opposite leeward gate mark to them, found a nice bit of breeze, tacked on a shift, then slogged our guts out to the finish line. I’ve never hiked so hard and my legs were trembling. We beat them across the line by half a boat length.”

Kormann, whilst Daniell Porsche, of the famous Porsche family, is the project’s main investor. Built from a combination of carbon fibre, titanium, stainless steel, teak wood and Boxmark Xtreme Leather, it is stylish as well as practical. The Kormoran’s main feature, however, is its hydrofoils, an advanced technology that reduces water resistance by up to 80% resulting in higher speeds with lower energy consumption. Porto Montenegro will host the Kormoran prototype in the marina throughout next summer and will be available for test drives.

CHEETAH Marine have partnered with Selva Marine UK to set up a sales and service centre for Selva’s ‘Continuously Rated’ outboard engines, which will be available directly to commercial customers, Selva dealers and boat builders. The initial range of engines will consist of: ■ The Selva Dorado 996 cc @ both 25hp and 30hp ■ The Selva Marlin 1596 cc @ both 0hp and 50hp ■ The Selva Tarpon 1741 cc rated @ 40hp As well as the sales process, Cheetah Marine will also offer spare parts, service, fishing licence advice and an engine exchange program. Sean Strevens, partner at Cheetah Marine, explains, “We have always wanted a range of continuously rated outboard engines which suit the commercial operator. Selva now deliver exactly what is needed in key hp categories and deliver the power required. Currently, most outboard engines are rated at their highest horse power, measured at maximum engine RPM with an optimised propeller. Although this is great for the sportsboat market it does not, necessarily, suit commercial markets and means that the licence KW required, where necessary, is generally very high.” “However, the Selva range of continuously rated engines are high cubic capacity, running at lower RPM which makes licence KW requirements more realistic. These engines will also use less fuel and will have an increased engine life, both of which helps towards a sustainable and safe fishery.” For information contact: sean@ cheetahmarine.co.uk or call 07974126378.

Creature comforts Pyjamas, in my view, are very often overlooked, but they can be the making of a Christmas for me and YAWN is a company who know how to do them right. Made from 100% cotton sateen they are incredibly soft with a relaxed cut so won’t cling to you, while the hand-drawn print elevates them to something a bit special. A pair of pyjamas to get you through the winter is ideal, and even better if they are a set you can take with you on your travels. RRP: £95 www.loveyawn.com
Not so novelty jumper The festive season generally brings out seasonal jumpers, with fairisle prints and hilarious reindeers. However, for those of you wanting to tone it down this year check out this jumper from Esencia; the mustard yellow gives way to a panel of cream that teamed with a pair of jeans or black skirt and boots gives an incredible winter look. RRP: £161 www.esencia.dk
Home sweet home This set of mismatched, slightly lopsided vases is ideal for anyone feeling a little nostalgic for the summer that is long gone. The high gloss ceramic vases are colour soaked in all different shapes and sizes makes a perfect accent to a room or garden. Sold separately you can mix and match sizes and colours to suit. The personal touch
There is always a gift that has that extra something and makes you value it year after year. Whether it is a scrapbook from your uni friends recording a memorable trip around the Solent or a jumper knitted with love and care from a relative, these are often the best presents. This year Johnston’s Cashmere have brought out a selection of personalised accessories that add that little something extra to an already great gift.

Stunning photography
Last of the Clippers
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. In that case the celebration of the dramatic work of France’s top marine photographer, Gilles Martin-Raget, over the last decade must be worth trillions. His stunning photographs taken around the world reflect the development of sailing in all its forms: racing, classic yachts, superyachts and the America’s Cup, where he was official photographer last year. This spectacular coffee table book will enthrall any sailor or photographer for hours and if it does not inspire landlubbers on to the water, nothing will. It is not cheap, but it is worth every penny. Spoil a loved one or drop big hints to someone to spoil you.
And on the subject of Clippers, the restoration of the fastest and most famous of the tea clippers, rescued after the devastating 2007 fire, is worth celebrating. Eric Kentley, former curator of the National Maritime Museum, does the iconic Cutty Sark proud. It is a fascinating history for young and old.

Salty sayings A golden age Mutinies, rivalries and the inspirational story of Captain Mary Patten battling Cape Horn are all part of an illustrated history of the age of the Clippers. Yachting journalist Sam Jefferson, born in the Lake District and obsessed with sailing from an early age, brings the commercially inspired “races” to life with first hand accounts, newspaper reports and log entries. This was a time when shipping was sheer elegance.

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH IAN WILLIAMS, 4 TIMES WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR CHAMPION
HOW DID YOU GET INTO SAILING? I started with my parents on their cruiser from a very young age.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START RACING COMPETITIVELY?
When I was young everything I did was competitive! I’ve calmed down a bit now, but back then it was natural for me that any sport I was engaged with would be on a competitive basis.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? I put a big emphasis on the team right from the start, and I have been lucky to always have a very strong team around me that has been the key to my success on the WMRT.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SAILING?
I think it’s a great feeling to be harnessing the energy from the wind and water and trying to get the most out of it.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SAILING AMBITIONS YOU STILL WANT TO FULFILL?
Yes – many! Short term it would be amazing to become the first skipper to reach five match racing World Titles with Team GAC Pindar, and in the long term I would love to play a part in winning the America’s Cup.
WHAT’S THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
I think the first match racing World Championship was a real highlight – it felt like a big achievement as no British skipper before me had even won a medal, so there was no example to follow in terms of getting to the top with the lack of facilities we have in the UK.
WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU?
In 2015 we will be back out with Team GAC Pindar on the World Match Racing Tour going for another World Title. I have a few other things in the pipeline but nothing finalised yet.
ABOVE: Ian Williams and GAC Pindar (Credit: Robert Hajduk) RIGHT: Ian Williams (Credit: Mark Lloyd)
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR THAT SETS IT APART FROM OTHER SAILING COMPETITIONS?
There are many things: the supplied boats, a different type of boat at each event, the format which means the whole event can turn on a single moment, but for me the biggest thing is that due to the supplied boats and prize money structure you do not need to be wealthy or have a big sponsor or benefactor to compete, which in professional sailing really is unusual. It means that the winners are the best team on the day, not necessarily the best funded team who can prepare the best.
HOW HAS THE TOUR CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? Image: Ian Roman
The introduction of the Tour Card system a few years ago both gave teams a
guaranteed entry to each event, but also required them to attend most if not all events which has led to the Tour becoming more and more a primary focus for the teams competing on it, which in turn has really raised the level over the years.
WHAT WOULD IT MEAN TO WIN A FIFTH WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR AT THE MONSOON CUP?
It would be incredible to be the first skipper to win five World Championship titles – it is something that I never dreamed could be possible when I was growing up sailing.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LEG OF THE WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR AND WHY?
I enjoy the Monsoon Cup the most because that is where the pressure really
comes on and the whole thing is on the line. That feeling is why I chose a career in professional sport.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
Russell Coutts was always the benchmark when I was rising up through the match racing ranks, but now Ben Ainslie is the sailor in the world we look to, to learn how to get it done when it counts.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?
Whatever sailing you are doing, be it competitive or not, make sure you are enjoying it as you will get so much more out!
An end to bailing your boat!

Contessa 32 Documentary DVD
How is the world’s oldest club keeping up with modern day pressures. DID you know that the Royal Cork Yacht Club (RCYC) is the oldest club in the world having been established in 1720 - almost 100 years before early combustion engines were even built? There were no oil spills to worry about, but there was a fear of sailing off the edge of the world to contend with. The Green Blue recently visited the Royal Cork Yacht Club to carry out an environmental audit ahead of the club’s assessment for The Yacht Harbour Association’s Gold Anchor Award Scheme, which contains various environmental criteria. The club currently has the highest rating of five Gold Anchors for its marina and is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). As well as a 220-berth marina and 38 moorings, the club hosts the biennial Cork Week, which welcomes over 400 boats. RCYC currently holds RORC’s Commodores’ Cup, so there is a high pedigree of sailors who are current members. Previous members also include the notorious Sir Thomas Lipton, five times America’s Cup challenger. Contrary to what one might think about such an historic club there are lots of initiatives to bring in new members and keep the marina at 100% capacity. In the UK we have some fantastic programmes to increase participation, notably the RYA’s OnBoard programme and the BMF’s On the Water initiative.
EMBRACING SUSTAINABILITY
When we talk about sustainability, the club, by definition, has been one of the most successful as it has been running for so long. In the early days the main issues were undoubtedly recruiting new members and controlling finances. These days, being environmentally sustainable is another area that the marina has embraced. The marina is, of course, a relatively recent addition to the club and it is interesting to see how this asset is now utilised. On the one hand it is a form of revenue traditionally only used by bigger boats, but in Cork’s case dinghies can also use it. Even though Royal Cork is a Yacht Club there is a very active dinghy fleet. The club has even bought a number of club boats that can be rented and used, not unlike a number of other marinas, such as Porto Montenegro, that have invested in small race boats for berth holders to use. Another notable feature is an ingenious slipway built into the marina pontoon. At the end of one of the wide pontoons is a ramp that can be lowered and raised allowing the marina to have a slipway usable at all states of the tide. A

significant proportion of yacht owners made the transition from sailing affordable dinghies when they were younger - something that wasn’t lost on the club’s management.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS
As well as the ICOMIA Clean Marina award gained through the Gold Anchor Scheme, the marina has a Blue Flag award for environmental management. Since the last visit to the club almost three years ago a huge number of environmental improvements have been made. It is great to see spill kits on all the club’s work boats, as well as bilge socks and fuel collars in use on their fuel berth. When the new fuel berth was installed the club made sure that the piping was laid so that a sewage pump out facility could be easily installed at a later date. Environmental educational posters can be found all around the site and members are very well informed about how they can reduce their environmental impact as well as understanding what to do should there be an environmental incident. Going forward, the marina is looking to replace more of the pedestals with LED lighting and also take advantage of their large south facing roof to explore the suitability for solar panels, and a plan for 2020 includes a sewage pump out facility. Combining the old with the new made for an impressive visit and it’s refreshing to come across a club and marina that really embrace all aspects of the word ‘sustainability’. Living the dream

Joshua Slocum
Turning cruising dreams into reality is far closer than we might think.
As the evenings draw in with the arrival of the cold, dark and stormy weather, a time honoured pastime amongst the yachting community is to dream of an escape to warmer climes. From there it is but a short step to more serious contemplation of taking the time out for that once in a lifetime cruise away to an ‘alternative lifestyle’. But if you are going to dream, dream big and think about that real trip, a round the world voyage! Yet these dreams are nothing new as 120 years ago, in Boston, Massachusetts, Joshua slocum was considering just such a voyage - singlehanded. For such a momentous decision, his thinking, as related in his book ‘sailing alone around the World’, seems remarkably relaxed, meriting no more than the mention “I had resolved on a voyage around the world”. Yet even back then, slocum was aware of not only the importance of what he was setting out to do, but the commercial opportunities such a trip presented. Before he departed on the 24th April 1895, aboard The spray, he had already agreed a book deal that would bring him both fame and a degree of financial stability. sadly, although the world 120 years ago was a safer place than it can be today, slocum would experience a few dangerous moments with locals who were anything but friendly. Not long after leaving Gibraltar, he was pursued by pirates and was readying his rifle to fight them off when a squall carried the pirate’s rig away. Then, whilst trying to make his way through the strait of Magellan (and thus
avoiding the passage to the south of Cape Horn) he was saved by the simple expedient of sprinkling tintacks onto his deck before turning in for the night. When a marauding party of natives, led by the murderous Black Pedro, tried to sneak aboard in the dark, they soon found the sharp end of the tacks, with their shouts of pain raising the alarm for slocum. The pirates of today are far more sophisticated, better armed and aware of the ‘value’ of a western hostage, which would make the sort of voyage undertaken by slocum a risky venture. CRUISE IN COMPANY Instead, it is possible to ‘live the dream’ by making a circumnavigation as part of an organised rally. The world leader in this sphere is the World Cruising Club, based at Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The original idea came from Jimmy Cornell, who had sailed away with his wife and children on a round the world voyage that would see them covering some 68,000 miles in six years. Cornell recognised that not everyone could leave society for such an extended period, but at the same time, could sign up for a more managed cruise. This
led him to set up the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (now known around the world as the ARC) that provided a wellorganised agenda for boats to complete a transatlantic crossing in company. With the success of this venture, Cornell set up the World Cruising Club, an organisation that now organises nine annual events in different locations around the world. But the headline event is the World ARC, a 15-month long 26,000 mile odyssey that starts at st Lucia in January, before heading south for a transit through the Panama Canal. The key ethos of the rally is to mix the sailing with plenty of time in the arranged stopovers, with the Galapagos Archipelago being just one of the amazing places where time is allowed for exploration. After breaks ashore in some iconic cruising locations such as Bora Bora, Tonga and Vanuatu, the fleet will head on to the Great Barrier Reef before reaching the halfway point at Darwin in Northern Australia. The second half of the rally will see the fleet stopping at the Cocos Keeling Islands, Mauritius, Cape Town, Brazil and Grenada before ending up at the finish back in st Lucia. This route maximises the advantages of good weather and the classic tradewinds, whilst avoiding those areas where visiting yachts are potentially seen as nothing more than a viable currency, or worse. OLD IDEAS, MODERN COMFORTS Unlike slocum, who relied on dead reckoning and traditional navigation made by taking noonday sights (the experienced slocum also took lunar observations to check his progress), boats sailing in one of the ARC rallies are fully equipped with modern navigational aids. slocum’s one addition to his navigation table was a tin clock, that he bought cheaply on account of the face being broken. Once he had departed, the only news of him came from commercial vessels that had seen him mid-ocean. For the ARC sailors, however, there is a regular schedule of radio and email contacts that keep them in touch with the organisers and the outside world. When they reach one of the stopping points, the ARC organisers will be there waiting for them, with help negotiating the local regulations as well as excursions to provide the best break from the time spent at sea. With the notion of students taking a ‘Gap Year’ between exams and university, the idea of adults taking their own gap year is one that is increasingly becoming much more than a dream. Yet far from the slocum like notion of sailing off into the unknown, for sailors today the risks have been reduced and the breath of the experience maximised. It’s time to stop dreaming and start planning. ARC: www.worldcruising.com/arc

from the UK based Disabled sailing Association (DsA). there is accessible accommodation nearby and with a year round average temperature of 19.3 degrees and 2,800 hours of sunshine, it’s easy to see the attraction of taking part in winter sailing here. tambien, the local disabled sailing group sail Access 303 dinghies and the Paralympic Class single-person 2.4 metre keelboats and the two-person skud keelboats. Meanwhile the DsA provide six 152 dinghies and two Weta trimarans for charter.

Whilst many of us, particularly us older ones, hang up our wellies and lifejackets at this time of year when the thought of icy winds and frozen extremities is enough to keep us on land for the winter months, there is a group of disabled sailors who have discovered the perfect solution. With a flying time of three hours or less from the UK Mar Menor, near Alicante, is fast becoming a hotspot for year-round, warm weather sailing. Mar Menor has to be seen to be understood

properly. it is a 170 square kilometre salt water lagoon separated from the Mediterranean sea by a 100 metre wide 22 kilometre long sandbar. Measuring 7 metres at its deepest and with its high salinity, Mar Menor offers some of the greatest small boat sailing in the northern hemisphere. sailing is based at the CAR infanta Christina sailing Centre on the shore of Mar Menor, and disabled sailing and racing is organised by Pro-Vela, a local sail training company with support
From April there will be weekly open regattas sailing all classes of dinghies by people of all abilities, disabled and non-disabled, with the only stipulation on able-bodied racers that they remain seated for the duration of the race to make it equal for all participants. Mike Woods, who runs the Disabled sailing Association in the UK and who has been keen to develop Mar Menor as a destination for disabled sailors in the UK, was keen to explain the benefits, “i have been coming here for many years and it has to be one of Europe’s best kept sailing secrets; the conditions are near perfect almost all the time. that consistency and reliability is good for disabled sailing. sailing should be about having fun, not fighting with the extremes all the

time. Warm weather and warm water temperatures tend to suit disabled people more; we just function better when we are warm. We are really excited to be working with Pro-Vela and CAR, and all we want to do now is see more British disabled sailors sailing on Mar Menor.”
As i write this, my very dear friend, fellow Challenger sailor and one of the kindest and most gentle ladies i know is about to be awarded the highest accolade in disabled sailing, the RYA’s Francis Elkin Award. i have known Judi Figgures since the early 1990s and in the scores of races we have competed in, i’ve never beaten her yet. Francis Elkin was a founding trustee of RYA sailability when we formed in 1995. When he died some years later, the award was set up in his memory to be given to the person who has made the most outstanding contribution to disabled sailing. i can not think of a more worthy winner than Judi. www.wetwheels.co.uk

CHOOSING tHE BESt AUtOPIlOt FOR YOUR BOAt
lAtest Autopilot tecH
An autopilot is a valuable addition to any boat, often contested to be one of the most technically sophisticated instruments you can have on board. Whether your sailing is racing, cruising or other, investing in a reliable pilot never ceases to aid skipper and crew by offering that extra assistance when shorthanded, needing to do some work on or below deck or to simply keep you on a straight course. The peace of mind an autopilot can bring means many sailors would not leave the marina without it. Most autopilots now have the ability to network, enabling the boat to sail to a consistent wind angle from an instrument or along a desired route from the chartplotter.
Winter can bring some challenges, but it also presents the opportunity to improve technology on board for the next season. Ross Partridge, Raymarine UK Retail Sales manager and experienced One Design, IRC and Offshore sailor, talks us through the latest tech in autopilots.
Raymarine’s new advanced Evolution autopilot
See page 24 for more electronics buying advice
How Autopilots work?
Autopilots essentially have four core parts to them: n Display unit to display the current mode, course and setup. n The compass providing the system with heading information. n A computer control collating all inputs to then provide output commands to the drive. n The drive unit used to alter or maintain the position of the steering. All parts work in unison, continuously cross-referencing the required heading with the true heading of the boat and keeping them inline.
It is important not to under specify an autopilot
pilot cHoices
The joy of autopilots are that they come in a variety of sizes and feature sets, ensuring that any boat can find the perfect fit with a pilot. Check what steering mechanism your boat has and the weight (including crew, fuel, water and so on) of the vessel. These two factors will then lead you toward your type of pilot as well as the size and positioning of the drive unit, which could be wheel based, tiller or on the rudder stock and whether it is mechanical, wire, solenoid or hydraulic based. It is essential to never under specify an autopilot; you want it to be working within its comfort zone all the time no
matter what the conditions are or loads on the boat. We all go out in good weather but do not necessarily come back in it.
Development
At Raymarine, ever since the introduction of their first tiller autopilot in 1975, the development teams have been busy, which recently resulted in the introduction of the new Evolution autopilot. It has been recognised by the industry at the 2014 nMEA Conference & Expo, cited as delivering breakthrough autopilot
intelligence, most notably the 9-axis sensor technology which is truly novel. The new fast heading sensor, the EV-1, is a solid state compass working off 9-axis points, computing heading, pitch, roll and yaw, providing accurate, fast information to the computer about the boat’s current characteristics. This advanced pilot technology is now being widely used by open ocean professionals and weekend warriors alike. Simple to operate, easy to install and link to other instrument its aim is to make boating easier and more hassle free for all.

Record breakers
Sam Whittle breaking the first record at Records Week (Image Tim Piper Juice Photography)
An incredible 22 records were broken at this year’s Coniston Powerboat Records Week
ONCE more the sleepy waters of Coniston became a bustling hive of activity as it welcomed RYA Officials and Competitors for the 44th Records Week. With its breath taking scenery and own microclimate, somewhat sheltered from the Atlantic weather systems that sweep across the Lake District, what better location to enter the speed history books. After all Coniston is rich in history for being chosen by Donald Campbell for his Speed Record attempts. The week started off with disappointment for both officials and those waiting to make their place in the history books as the ever reliable
timing equipment had a fault and so attempts had to be postponed until the Tuesday morning. SAM TAKES THE STAGE However, that morning saw ideal conditions for world record breaking on the water and first off the jetty was 22-year-old Sam Whittle. Sam, in his Molgaard Catamaran hull, was attempting a World and National Record in the S1000 Class powered by a single 60hp Mercury engine. In near perfect conditions Sam and the Powertech Marine team were delighted when the result came over the radio from timing
control that he had established a new record of 61.69mph. During the week Sam made several more attempts to finally set a new World and National Water Speed Record of 70.45mph in the S1000 Class. Coniston Powerboat Records Week is one of the only places in the UK where spectators can see all disciplines of Powerboat competing in one place and 2014 delivered a full house of disciplines. In Offshore, recently crowned UIM World 3A Champion John Guille and Team Têtue had travelled the furthest to be at Records Week 2014 - all the way from the Channel Islands - and they were
obviously determined to achieve a record as they notched up 19 attempts on the course during the week, more than any other. Their efforts didn’t go unrewarded either as John set a national record of 70.95mph in the Offshore 3A Class. DOING THE DOUBLE A familiar record breaker who had been absent for a couple of years was Alan Pickard who was the first personal water craft (PWC) of the week to make an attempt, and as usual Alan didn’t disappoint as he set a new World and National Record in the Runabout GP Class and eventually settled for
83.75mph as the new record. But there was still more to come from Alan in the Runabout Superstock 1200 at 84.02mph, which saw him secure his second World and National Record.
Coniston Powerboat Records Week is one of the only places in the UK where spectators can see all disciplines of Powerboat competing in one place Helen Loney who is currently the holder of the British Fastest Lady Record set a new National BCC Class 1 Record at 79.07mph. Helen’s record didn’t stand for long though as Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club’s Commodore Peter Hart raised the bar in the BCC Class 1 to 92.15mph. Peter was the most successful competitor with another National Record in the Clubman Unlimited Class at 91.00mph and increasing the World and National Record in the Pro Rib Sport Class to 74.69mph taking his total record tally for the week to three. A total of 6 World Records and 16 National Records were broken during the 44th Records Week, an event run solely by volunteers and takes the participation of over 60 individuals to enable this great British tradition to take place and the records to be broken. Next year will be the 45th Annual Powerboat Records Week and the dates have been confirmed as 2 - 6th November 2015.

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
HANDLING IN HEAVY WEATHER
REMEMBER
Make sure that everyone has good handholds and seating positions and the helmsman is wearing the killcord. Clever handling in rough conditions can be the difference between a stressful, potentially dangerous experience and a thrilling trip.
There comes a time for every boater when you face conditions that are going to test your skill and nerve.
A sudden change in the weather, a wind shift or the arrival of a big swell can transform a tranquil trip into a rollercoaster ride. If you know what you are doing, heavier conditions can be exhilarating, but if you lack technique, the chances are you will be scared. In addition to this, poor technique in rough conditions can even result in injury. The RYA’s Intermediate Powerboat and Advanced Powerboat courses provide practical rough weather pointers, but in the meantime here a few top tips from Paul Glatzel’s RYA Powerboat Handbook.
Driving upwind usually entails trimming down and driving up the face of the wave.
DRIVING UPWIND
Waves are generally generated by wind and come from the same direction. Driving into the wind, therefore, means driving into the waves. Driving downwind the boat drives with the waves, applying special techniques will ensure safety and comfort. The ride then becomes smooth and quite fast. Progression is achieved by throttling on and off as you move over the wave. Trimming down ensures that the ‘V’ of the hull is used to slice into the approaching wave, while applying more throttle lifts the bow in the trough to drive up the approaching wave and
Ease off at the top of the wave to ensure you do not take off.
Accelerate down the back of the wave, speeding up to raise the bow as the trough is reached, then drive up the wave towards the next crest.
prevent the bow driving straight into it. This avoids the need for trimming up and down to achieve the same effect. Whether this proves to be a comfortable ride depends to a large extent on the ‘wavelength’ (the distance between the wave crests). Shorter wavelengths can make it very difficult, as there is little time between wave crests for the helmsman to adjust the throttle settings. In this case, you might find it easier to drive at 30º–45º to the wave front. This increases the ‘apparent wavelength’ and can therefore allow you to increase your speed and smooth your journey. You will then need to zigzag towards your destination but, while longer in distance, this method can be less stressful and quicker.
UPWIND - This can be summed up as: when the bow is rising throttle back, when the bow is falling - throttle up.

ELECTRONICS BUYING CONSIDERATIONS
Festive treats
VHF – HANDHELD OR FIXED? WheN it comes to buying VhF the first decision is deciding between a handheld or fixed unit. it might be that it’s to be used as an emergency back-up to an existing fixed piece of kit or simply for use amongst the crew, in which case the small portable VhF is the clear answer. This type of VhF is also ideal for smaller boats, especially those without a battery source. A fixed VhF radio comes into its own for sailors on larger boats and those sailing further offshore because, in most instances, the transmit distance of a fixed mount will exceed that of the handheld unit. installation of a fixed VhF can be done either professionally or by the owner depending on their skill level. A handheld unit is going, by the very nature of its job, to endure all
If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your electronics kit or are buying for the first time, Christmas is the perfect time to treat yourself, or drop a hint by leaving this article lying around at home…
CHARTPLOTTERS – BUTTON OR TOUCHSCREEN?
WiTh so many mainstream electronics utilising touchscreens these days, it’s easy to see the appeal in having the marine electronics installed on a boat use a touchscreen as well. With many units offering easy scrolling and pinch-to-zoom capabilities, the touchscreen has brought a new level of control to the helm. Yet, there is still a strong contingent of boaters and anglers who prefer to have a button interface. Both provide the same information and benefits but vary slightly in the way you interact with the chartplotter. The touchscreen brings unprecedented levels of control to the user’s fingertips by easily accessing the information you need most from your chartplotter. Pinch-to-zoom has become a common feature and a recognisable term with most of our modern technology and make it easy to quickly zoom to whatever data or information that’s needed. it also brings a new level of ease to scrolling and customisation, providing a very user-friendly experience. There are various sizes of
touchscreen chartplotters on the market, ranging from 7” to 19”. A button interface is more of the traditional format that you’ll find on marine electronics. The same features found on a touchscreen unit can be found here as well, only with a corresponding button for the desired action on the chartplotter. The user-experience is still great and simply requires a bit more interaction with the chartplotter. This is often the preferred chartplotter interface if exposed to colder temperatures, simply because the buttons can be pressed while wearing gloves. At the end of the day, the type of chartplotter that should be purchased is based on the technology the user feels most comfortable with. if more of a traditionalist, the button interface is probably the best choice for someone that likes the feel of button feedback. if more comfortable with pinchto-zoom, the touchscreen option may be best, especially if touchscreens have been utilised before. When out on the water, the user experience needs to be an enjoyable and comfortable one, so whichever provides that experience is best.
HISTORY OF GPS - Like so much high-tech innovation, GPS was designed by the United States military. Although started in the late 1960s it wasn’t until 1978 that the first satellite was launched. Over ten years later, in 1989, the Magellan Corp. introduced the first handheld GPS receiver. However, it wasn’t until 1996 that the President Clinton decided to make GPS free for civilian users.
kinds of situations and so needs to be a tough unit and, preferably, submersible (iPX7) as opposed to splash proof (iPX4). equally, if the radio does go overboard, a floating handheld equals easy retrieval. Battery life is a potential lifesaver, which is why it has to be high on the list of priorities. handheld radios operate for a range of between 7.5 and 20 hours, although accessories to help with battery life include drop-in chargers and alkaline battery packs. The range of fixed VhF units is large with prices reflecting the power output, waterproof rating, size, ease of use and a range of features. Consider, for example, the interface features, audio enhancements, scanning functions and weather alerts. All fixed VhF radios include Digital Selective Calling (DSC) capability,
which is part of the international protocol of safety procedures in the Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS). DSC provides nonemergency functions, allowing you to communicate with another boat or group of boats. More importantly, in an emergency the push of a button sends an automated digital MAYDAY message on VhF Channel 70, which can be received by all other vessels within radio range and also the Coast Guard.
DID YOU KNOW
The Marine Radio Short Range Certificate remains a legal requirement for the use of marine VHF. All radios require the user and the vessel to hold a relevant licence.
GPS – WHAT’S IMPORTANT? There are many GPS products available, which is why it’s necessary for sailors to understand the full range of features available and select the ones they will need. Put this list together with a preferred screen size, choice of brands and budget (prices can range from £80 - £10,000) and the options will have narrowed considerably. Screen size is extremely important. The bigger the better is the general rule to allow maps and coordinates to be clearly displayed on screen. reception is a priority too, and here an external antenna or a port to add one is ideal. While internal antennas are compact, reception isn’t as good. Of course as many safety features as possible should be included on any GPS bought. These include a 12-channel receiver, arrival alarm, low battery alarm and MOB. A couple more points to consider are voice activation and water resistance. While not essential, for those occasions when more then two hands are needed a voice activation feature can make life a lot more straightforward. Not planning to get the GPS wet? Fortunately most claim to be waterproof anyway but it’s always best to go for one that is fully water resistant. A final thought on GPS, in order to save information such as routes and waypoints, plus download extras, the GPS needs to be able to connect with a computer. With a shortlist of products it’s a good idea to search for reviews written by users. Quite often these can provide useful details based on day-to-day use, and you’ll discover the good points as well as the bad.
Do you have a VHF, GPS or chartplotter you’ve been using that does a great job? Or perhaps one that has survived a mishap and still keeps going? We’d like to hear all the details, good and bad: editor@allatsea.co.uk Thank you to Garmin for their assistance in preparing this article.

Off the Rails
Yarmouth is everyone’s favourite sleepover with institutions such as Saltys and The George playing their part, but there are some dynamic new kids on the block so let’s stretch our legs and get out there. First it’s time for a caffeine pit stop at PO41, once the post office, just opposite The George. It’s perfect for sleepy heads coming off their boats or the ferry. Elaine runs a buzzing, cosy, top coffee joint from 7.30 – 4pm every day. The Union Coffee is fab.

The Piano
Coming back from my trip I pull up at the first carriage available at Off the Rails, which opened in the summer when local interior designers opened up this wonderful sunny space that was once the disused station. Wight Cycle Hire is located at the end of the building making this the perfect start for your island cycling adventure. Overlooking Thorley Brook wetland with the glass doors fully open to the November sunshine, and the wood burner a glow, what a joyful stop off this is. Philippe Blot, who runs the place, is full of ideas from Orient Express evenings to some more intimate dining experiences, bringing a bit of cinematic drama to the station in the winter months. So get your ‘smoking’ out of the wardrobe, polish the pearls and watch this space. There is a good mix already seated. A handful of well behaved dogs (they have their own menu) and more walkers than cyclists today, but this is mid November. I grab a table, near the woodburner, that looks out over the golden marshes. Suitcases stored up in the luggage racks give me a warm Hogwarts Express feel. Looking at the specials I am immediately attracted to the Gally Bagger Rarebit, with blackberry, beetroot and sweet red onion chutney, or how about the

Warm Corn-fed chicken salad with pesto, sun blushed tomatoes, roasted peppers and crispy chicken skin? I’m told by the party at the next table that OTR figs stuffed with goat’s cheese is formidable, but I plump for the Signalman’s stew of slow braised lamb with spring vegetables and spices, delicious with warm ciabbata (all £8). As I didn’t try the Rarebit, Philippe brought me a taster of the Isle of White Cheese’s own Gally Bagger, a golden, nutty tasting, hard cheese, that apparently means Scarecrow in Island tongue.

When you arrive at Freshwater the options open up. Is it to be a coffee stop or a light lunch? As I’m heading on to Tennyson Down I turn right at the sea front and head up the hill to The Piano as I’ve heard great things about Sam and Kimmy buying this old shop, which was previously a piano, music and stationery store. It now serves great coffee, mezze and light snacks with live piano sessions most weekends. TASTING NOTES Top time to visit - Sunday lunch when the ivories are being tinkled. Hop’s choice - the hand made Florentines with a coffee or Jan’s tart of the day – goats cheese, thyme and Island sun dried tomato when I visited. Coffee by Island Coffee.
There are some lovely fresh drink options; the homemade pink lemonade is a tart hit for me and I like the addition of the ‘pichet’ option on the wine list. It’s common in most French eating establishments, allowing you to try more interesting wines without buying the whole bottle. The cocktail list will have to wait until the sun has gone over the signal post, but there may be time for the Strawberry and Pimms Eton Mess or the Chocolate Fondant (all £5.50). It’s still sunny outside as I leave to head back into Yarmouth to check out what’s new in Harwoods, surely one of the most upmarket hardware shops around? In fact, there is a great choice of retail treats for those visiting sailors, from antiques to art to quirky clothing. There’s just time to pop into the George to sit by the fire with a cup of tea and a look at the afternoon tea menu…
Best of the rest
The Island Bakers - up for an award this month. In Yarmouth you can buy it in the deli - best buys are the sourdough and some amazingly crisp and buttery croissants
Beware the mobile phone fine at the Red Lion (although it sounds like a great idea to us)
The other option is the ever popular End of the Line Café, which serves great quiches, jacket potatoes and wonderful cheese scones. Great value and always busy. If I wasn’t cycling I would walk back through the charming village of Freshwater to the Red Lion, right next to the church. It’s cosy, has good beer and reliable pub food. Beware mobile users - turn it off before entering or they’ll fine you (all in aid of the RNLI). Then cross the old causeway and take the path back to Yarmouth – see the map for choice of route.

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON MARINAS AND HARBOURS
REFLECTIONS
North to south, east to west, we have profiled marinas situated all around the UK in 2014, and here we look back at them all.
CARDIFF MARINA
CARDIFF Marina is a 350 berth marina in the heart of Cardiff Bay, which itself is an attractive and approachable environment for boat users of all standards. The Bay provides 200 hectares of freshwater to explore and the Barrage allows 24 hour access to the Bristol Channel. Situated on the River Ely on the International Sports Village, Cardiff Marina is perfectly positioned to provide safe, secure and sheltered moorings for motorboats and yachts. The location of the marina, in the Welsh capital city, ensures there are plenty of activities within close proximity to the marina to provide an exciting and dynamic location to moor your vessel. You can sail over to Mermaid Quay and spend your time exploring the wide range of bars and restaurant or watching a performance at the Millennium Centre, or you may prefer to sail out to Flat Holm Island or spend an afternoon fishing in the Bristol Channel. And, as part of a fully integrated marine company, Cardiff Marina offers berth holders peace of mind by having the onsite knowledge and expertise of its Boatyard.
Share your marina experiences with us: editor@allatsea.co.uk GLASSON BASIN,
GLASSON Basin is a unique marina situated in the north west, four miles from historic Lancaster with ready access to both the open sea and the Lancashire Canal system. The marina benefits from the best of all worlds, being near to the city and at the same time enjoying the wildlife-rich Lune Estuary, where the Lancaster Canal meets the sea. Attractive views stretch across the Morecombe Bay to the Fells of the Lake District to the north and Blackpool Tower to the south. Glasson has a long-standing heritage with the boating community. A high degree of loyalty to the marina and its staff keeps boat owners returning, and many of the berth holders have been here for many seasons. It is also ideal for transient yachtsmen who can put in for shelter, stores and a fully stocked chandlery. The lock in to the fresh water basin is 30 metres by 7.9 metres wide and has comfortably handled boats over 26 metres in length. Glasson really upholds the true meaning of a welcome port in a storm.

Situated on the beautiful Jurassic Coast, Portland Marina is accessible at all states of the tide and provides world class facilities for this world class sailing destination. The Yacht Harbour Association recognised this when awarding Portland Marina with the first of its new style Five Gold Anchor Awards for excellence. The marina won the much coveted Maritime Business Award from the Crown Estate for its ‘approach to develop, maintain and promote the highest environmental standards within the marina’ and its regeneration of the former Royal Naval site, helping to improve the local economy. So visitors are able to enjoy superb facilities in one of the greenest marinas on the south coast. Its convenient position makes it a popular choice, along with its superb local fishing grounds appealing to avid anglers and a multitude of wrecks for determined divers.

THE Suffolk seaside resort of Lowestoft - officially the most easterly town in Britain – is home to Lowestoft Haven Marina, which is a proud recipient of the Yacht Harbour Association’s five gold anchor award. Backed by Oulton Broad and offering the best of both worlds with both coastal and Broads access, the venue is popular with berth holders and visitors alike. In total 186 berths are available at this marina, part of the ABP Marina’s operation at Lowestoft. NESTLING on the Eastney Peninsula, in the quieter reaches of Langstone Harbour, Southsea Marina is perfectly located for exploring the delights of the Solent. A friendly, working marina, ideal for sailing and motor cruisers alike, Southsea offers outstanding value, first-class facilities and a personal service that includes a 24-hour manned reception. The marina’s popularity owes much to its location, just minutes from the Solent, and to its value for money berthing. Pretty, quiet and friendly, it has a sailing club feel and an excellent reputation for customer service and a ‘can-do’ attitude. The marina is also popular with fishermen, and has a thriving angling club. Visitors should note that access to the marina is unique in being via an automatic tidal gate that opens and closes with the tide. There is, however a waiting pontoon and berth holders can leave their boats on the pontoon for the marina staff to bring in when the gate is open. Most berth holders use the time to fuel up.
The marina prides itself on its friendly outlook, and holds regular open days for prospective berth holders. Berth holder parties and ‘cruise in company’ events add to the social atmosphere for berth holders and their guests. n Southsea Marina n Fort Cumberland Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO4 9RJ n Tel: 02392 822 719 n www.premiermarinas.com

RYA FOCUS
The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
2014
BY EMMA SLATER
The Highlights It’s been another busy year for the RYA, protecting and promoting the rights and interests of recreational boaters, attending events and boat shows across the country and looking after their 103,000 members. Here are just a few of the highlights from 2014…
Yachtmaster of the Year Joseph Macdonald
JUNE
When the RYA’s OnBoard (OB) programme was created back in 2005, it set itself the ambitious target of introducing half a million children to the sport in ten years. As the programme approaches its ten year anniversary, the RYA were delighted to announce in June that they had already reached that number. In June the RYA also launched its new Refer a Friend scheme and the new SafeTrx Smartphone App. It was the surprise of a lifetime for sixteen-year-old Daisy Swinbourne from Clacton-on-Sea when she found out she had won the winner takes all ‘Start Sailing’ competition from the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show. A shocked Daisy claimed a bumper haul of sailing goodies including a star prize of a Topaz Taz dinghy.
JULY
Inspirational ‘sip and puff’ sailor Natasha Lambert, 17, who has cerebral palsy, had a send-off to remember as legends of the sport Dame Ellen MacArthur and Geoff Holt MBE were amongst the guests at a special ‘Stand By To Go’ reception to mark the beginning of her incredible 2014 Sea and Summit Challenge. The challenge would see Natasha sail 440 miles around the South West coast of England to Wales in her speciallydesigned 21ft yacht, Miss Isle Too, before climbing Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in Wales using a specialised walking frame.
JANUARY
Kicking off the year at the London Boat Show the RYA celebrated 40 years of the RYA Yachtmaster scheme and city banker Joseph Macdonald was crowned RYA Yachtmaster™ of the Year 2013. Joseph was presented with his prestigious trophy by HRH The Princess Royal. The RYA was also joined at the show by TV personality and sailor Nick Knowles and
Shipping Minister Stephen Hammond MP to endorse its new safety initiative. The first safety awareness publication of its kind for the leisure boating community, the annual Safety Advisory Notice is a clear, easily accessible digest of current, critical safety issues. Four key safety messages - look after yourself, have a plan, keep in touch and know your limits - form part of an ongoing safety education campaign.
FEBRUARY
MARCH
The RYA launched its ‘Killcord Campaign’ urging owners and drivers of small openpowered boats and RIBs to stay safe by following these simple safety steps: 1. Always wear a kill cord. 2. Keep a good look out. 3. Keep passengers and crew seated safely with secure handholds. 4. Maintain good communication throughout the journey. To date over 60,000 ‘Wear Your Kill Cord’ console stickers have been distributed to UK boaters. The campaign has also been taken up abroad in the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. The RYA’s Sailability programme announced the winners of the RYA Sailability Volunteer Awards at the largest ever RYA Sailability National Conference. While over in Miami, Giles Scott, Bryony Shaw and the 470 women’s pairing of Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre ensured a golden hat trick for Britain’s sailors on the final day of the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami.
SEPTEMBER
September and time for the PSP Southampton Boat Show, where the RYA had loads in store. OnBoard was once again celebrating success as double Olympic gold medallist Sarah Ayton joined a group of OnBoard sailors at the show to officially announce that over the past ten years 50,000 youngsters have enjoyed the sport so much they’ve continued to go sailing on a regular basis. Kamila Czartolmna, aged 13, became the first girl in more than ten years to be crowned a Honda RYA Youth RIB national champion when she and Jamie Paterson (aged 10) claimed victory at the championship final.
OCTOBER
The Green Blue reminded boaters to ‘Check Clean’ Dry’ to prevent the spread of invasive species across the UK’s inland waterways and around the coast following an announcement from the Environment Agency that the non-native Quagga Mussel had been found in the UK. Giles Scott claimed top honours at the British Sailing Team’s annual awards, winning the Athlete of the Year prize after his unbeaten run in the Finn class this season.
APRIL
In April the RYA received a boost to its Paralympic Pathway with the delivery of a brand new fleet of 16 2.4mR one-person keelboats, with the aim of delivering future Paralympic medals for Great Britain.
NOVEMBER
MAY
This year over 260 sailing clubs and centres up and down the country opened their doors to their local communities for the Push the Boat Out event. With 140% more clubs taking part in the national event since last year there was a huge increase in the number of people attending the events and experiencing sailing at ‘have a go’ sessions and open days.
RYA Club of the Year - Staunton Harold
The RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2014 proved more popular than ever as 10,000 visitors flock to Alexandra Palace. Main stage talks attracted big crowds as did the more hands on coaching sessions where visitors got to experience everything from taking part in the sailing fitness sessions, to the interactive racing rules session and the always popular Rig Tuning sessions. At the show Staunton Harold Sailing Club in South Derbyshire was crowned RYA Club of the Year 2014. Mike Lennon’s Exocet International Moth was crowned Concours d’Elegance winner and seven-year-old William James from Torquay clinched the start prize in the RS Design a sail competition.
Start Sailing competition winner - Daisy Swinbourne
Over 260 sailing clubs and centres took part in Push the Boat Out
Inspirational sailor Natasha Lambert
AUGUST
30 days after embarking on her epic adventure, Natasha Lambert successfully completed her Sea and Summit Challenge as she stood at the top of Pen y Fan surrounded by her 17-strong support team, including four members of the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue team and four military personnel, plus her family and sailing coach, having successfully scaled the 2,907ft Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons and sailing 440 miles around England’s South West coast to Wales. Carol Dugdale (2.4mR) and Val Millward (Challenger) were crowned 2014 Multiclass Champions as the final curtain came down on the eighth annual RYA Sailability Multiclass Regatta held at Rutland Sailing Club. The sailors of the British Sailing Team rounded off the first Rio Olympic Test event with eight medals across seven Olympic classes.
Will you be visiting the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2015?
Tickets went on sale for the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2015, the only exhibition in the world dedicated exclusively to the sport. HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA, presented the prestigious RYA Volunteer Awards recognising the exceptional contribution volunteers across the country make to the sport.
DECEMBER
At the time of writing we are still waiting to see what December brings! So that’s just a taster of what the RYA has been up to this year. Plans are already underway for the London Boat Show in January, the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show in March, Push the Boat Out 2015 and a whole host of other events and activities. New York Long Island iced tea cocktail is highly popular in the USA. Over here, Waitrose is stocking Harry Bromptons London Ice Tea, claiming to be the world’s first ‘premium alcoholic’ ready-made iced tea, from Kenyan tea and containing no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. 4 per cent a.b.v, gently sparkling and slightly sweet so not everyone’s cup of tea, but served from the fridge it adds a touch of exotica for pre- or post- Christmas meals at home or in the sailing club. About £2 per 275ml bottle. Zero alcohol Cawston Press Rhubarb is another one suitable for cadets and drivers. It sounds an unusual choice for a juice drink but Cawston Press blends rhubarb juice with sweet apples and sparkling water only - no additives. Refreshing on its own served over ice or mix with a shot of vodka for a nicely different fruit punch! £1.29 per 250ml bottle at my local Waitrose.
Festive Tipples Perk up the Christmas party with fiery ginger beer, iced tea and even some rhubarb.
A couple of years ago I held a small panel session tasting ginger beers, as reported in All At Sea in January 2013. Fentimans non-alcoholic version came out top for ginger flavour and Crabbies Original was the favourite alcoholic brew we sampled. “We liked the idea that ginger is reputed to have amazing healing powers, perfect as a winter warmer and a summer antidote to sea sickness,” they said. That’s quite widely held folklore and not necessarily scientifically valid but, even as far back as 500 BC, ginger was used as a medicine and food flavouring in China and India.
YOUR BEER TREATS
bottle. And, at £1.97 per 500ml, just a bit cheaper than an equivalent micro-brewery real ale. Fentimans non-alcoholic ginger beer has a much more sophisticated taste than the childhood ginger beers the Swallows and Amazons took to sea as their ‘grog’. £1.20 per 275ml screw-top bottle, it is a great drink on its own for drivers or cadet sailors. Mix it with Goslings Bermuda rum to make the sailor’s
For a beer treat, have a look at Belgian Trappiste strong brews. There are always two or three to choose from and, despite the high strength at 7 or 8 per cent, they’re usually about the price of a boutique real ale. For example, 7 per cent Westmalle Trappist Dubbel, sharply hoppy on the tongue and strongly fizzy, is only £2.30 for a 330ml bottle. Pour carefully into a stemmed beer glass and sip, don’t quaff, and get thinking about next season’s cruising plan.
FIERY GINGER BEER
Since the test, the range of brewed alcoholic ginger beers has grown with different variations of the genre and supermarkets introducing ownlabel versions, always a sure sign of a growing consumer interest. Waitrose Fiery Alcoholic Ginger Beer is one. Sporting an appropriate rustic burnished gold label and 4 per cent strong like most seem to be, it is fiery, tongue-tingling and unexpectedly light coloured when freed from its dark brown glass
