DECEMBER 2019

NEW ARRIVAL PORTSMOUTH WELCOMES WARSHIP BRITAIN’S MOST READ WATERFRONT NEWSPAPER

In a historic moment for the Royal Navy, HMS Prince of Wales, the second Queen Elizabeth class carrier after HMS Queen Elizabeth, was welcomed into Portsmouth for the first time by large crowds after eight weeks of sea trials. For the arrival of the £3.1bn warship, shipping lanes were closed and an air exclusion zone was put in place, and as the 65,000-tonne ship sailed into Portsmouth Harbour her crew stood lining the decks while two Hawk jets marked the moment with a flyby overhead. UK’S NEWEST AIRCRAFT CARRIER ARRIVES IN PORTSMOUTH FROM PAGE 1… HMS Prince of Wales has sailed into her homeport of Portsmouth for the first time – marking a significant milestone in the Royal Navy’s aircraft carrier history. There was considerable fanfare as the newest of Britain’s carriers was greeted by hundreds of people standing along Portsmouth’s seafront. Sailors lined the flight deck of the enormous carrier – the second of the largest warships ever built for the Royal Navy – as she sailed into Portsmouth Harbour with two Hawk jets marking the moment with a flyby overhead. It is the second time in two years the city has welcomed one of the UK’s new carriers, following HMS Queen Elizabeth’s arrival in August 2017. Image: Southampton Boat Show “I feel immensely proud to be a member of HMS Prince of Wales’ ship’s company while the ship is heading into its home port for the first time,” said Air Engineering Technician Ben Daniels. “It is a historic moment for the Royal Navy and I am looking forward to many years of service on this incredible ship.” The carrier sailed from Rosyth, where she was assembled, in late September with a mixed ship’s company of Royal Navy sailors (600-plus) and 320 civilian contractors on board to take her through an autumn of trials in the North Sea.

“It has been a unique experience watching the ship transition from its initial build to an operational warship,” said Air Engineering Technician Anthony Greatorex. “It is a proud moment to be a member of the first ship’s company and an opportunity that I am unlikely to get again.” HMS Prince of Wales’s arrival means Portsmouth Naval Base is now home to two aircraft carriers. The yard has been modernised to accommodate the two behemoths, with £30 million spent on strengthening and upgrading the base’s Victory Jetty.

BOAT SHOW RETURNS THE Poole Harbour Boat Show is set to return in 2020 from 12 - 14 June and is already shaping up to be the most exciting to date. Jim Stewart, CEO Poole Harbour Commissioners, introduced the plans for the 2020 show so far including the addition of a Seafood Festival that will showcase local produce. He also shared the key themes for the 2020 show, which will be safety and the environment. Other plans include on water displays, an attempt to break a Guinness World Record and a marine careers showcase. The show has played a key role in getting new people out on the water by providing free taster sessions and this will continue next year. A very successful ongoing partnership with local training centre Rockley Water Sports will provide everybody with the opportunity

to experience stand up paddleboarding, kayaking and dinghy sailing. Jim Stewart said: “We see ourselves as a community port and this is our way of giving back to the community by hosting the Poole Harbour Boat Show. It has grown from an attendance of 5,000 at the first event to around 32,000 this year, at the fifth show.” The show has something for everyone, from sail and motorboat owners, watersports enthusiasts, to families who are yet to experience the joy of being out on the water. With some of the biggest names in the marine industry showcasing their latest equipment and providing advice, to demonstrations, fireworks and live music, it is sure to be a popular event again. www.pooleharbourboatshow.co.uk

ITALY’S Marco Gradoni was crowned the 2019 male Rolex World Sailor of the Year, becoming the youngest ever recipient, at the World Sailing Awards. Denmark’s AnneMarie Rindom received the female accolade to follow in the footsteps of the all-time great sailors. Marco, at 15-years-old, was named for his success in the Optimist class, having won three consecutive World Championship titles, the first sailor to ever achieve this. Furthermore, since September 2018 he has won every Optimist event he has participated in, securing 14 gold medals. Anne-Marie has dominated the Laser Radial over the last 12 months and found rhythm that was unrivalled as she secured her second world title, which has highlighted her as a favourite for Tokyo 2020 gold. On her achievements, Anne-Marie said, “To become Rolex World Sailor of the Year and join a list of legends is truly amazing. I am so delighted to be on that list and it is a great honour for me.”

ALL AT SEA DECEMBER 2019 - FOR MORE NEWS EVERY DAY GO TO WWW.ALLATSEA.CO.UK

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde AS 2019 draws to a close, we begin to look ahead to 2020, and what a busy year it is going to be. Take a look at All at Sea’s online events guide (allatsea. co.uk/boatingevents) and you will see there are already many shows, festival and regattas announced including June’s Poole Harbour Boat Show, which is set to return after another successful event this year. On page 3 you can read more about what the organisers have planned for the sixth show. In fact 2020 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for boating events of all kinds kicking off with Mayflower 400. 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth UK to Plymouth Massachusetts and there will be celebrations and events throughout the year. Then, in April, the first America’s Cup World Series event takes place in Sardinia. After all the talk, the build-up, the teams in, the teams out, it will be good to finally see them on the water doing what they do best – racing. Just a few months later all eyes will be on Japan as the Tokyo Olympics take place. Team GB will be doing its very best to prove it is still the best on the water as the most successful national Olympic sailing team. Team GB tops the all-time Olympic sailing medal table and aims is to #RuleTheWaves at Tokyo 2020 and beyond. I am sure that tally of 58 medals will be beaten next summer. Then, just under a year from now, on 8 November, the Vendée Globe begins. It is the only sailing race round the world, solo, non-stop and without assistance. 167 contenders have started the race, but only 89 of them have managed to cross the finish line.

That tells you what a demanding undertaking it is. British candidates include Pip Hare, Samantha Davies, Miranda Merron and, of course, Alex Thomson, who finished second in 2017. As you will read on page 11, Alex has not had the best build up to the Vendée Globe with his unplanned withdrawal from the Transat Jacques Vabre last month after hitting something in the water which left the boat’s keel attached only by the hydraulic ram. We will keep our fingers crossed that the damage is not too severe and HUGO BOSS is back on the water before too long. Spotted out on The Solent by a number of All at Sea readers is INEOS TEAM UK’s AC75 race boat, Britannia. Watch a video of her being put through her paces at www.facebook. com/allatseanewspaper. We would love to see your photos of Britannia too if you spot the team on the water. Perhaps we will do a Photo of the Month Britannia special ahead of the first America’s Cup World Series event. Take a look at this month’s reader photos on page 19 as they are the final selection from this year before we bring you the best of 2019 next month. We will need your votes to choose the overall winner, so be sure to pick up your January issue of All at Sea. Staying in December, we hope you have a wonderful festive season and if you are in need of more gift ideas turn to page 22, and if you are planning a ‘greener’ Christmas the Green Blue also has some top tips from choosing presents to eco wrapping. Do not forget gifts for our four legged friends – how about the doggy lifejacket on page 9? See you in 2020! Jane Hyde, Editor

SINKING YACHT SPARKS SOLENT EMERGENCY

All that remained to be seen was the mast sticking out of the water. Image: John Green A major Solent emergency involving a sinking yacht led to Cowes RNLI lifeboat joining a number of vessels racing to its aid. The yacht had been on passage from Portsmouth to Cowes when the incident occurred. The 40ft yacht, with three Swiss men on board, had lost its rudder and was taking on water after it apparently snagged the anchor chain of No 2 buoy at the entrance of Cowes Harbour. As the yacht began drifting westwards, all the time becoming more waterlogged,

THIS MONTH

Image: RNLI the lifeboat raced to help, together with a River Medina-based crew transport vessel, Calshot RNLI lifeboat, a police launch, a Cowes Harbour launch, a catamaran and two car ferries belonging to Red Funnel. Two of the yacht’s crew were quickly taken off by the crew transport craft. The yacht was boarded by two of the Cowes lifeboat crew with a salvage pump, but they found there was too much water to be effective, having by then reached as high as the yacht’s chart table.

As it was clear the yacht would eventually sink, everyone was taken off the craft, and Cowes Harbour released a tow line to take the yacht further away from the shipping lane. The sinking finally occurred off Gurnard, leaving just part of the mast above the water. A marker buoy was put in place by the Cowes Harbour launch, as a warning to other vessels. A couple of days later the yacht was raised and towed to Shephards Wharf Marina, Cowes.

AS part of Hovertravel’s preparations for Children In Need fundraising, Pudsey paid a visit to their headquarters in Ryde. Loretta Lale, head of commercial at Hovertravel, said: “To be able to welcome an iconic figure such as Pudsey really helped to kick-start our fundraising activities for Children In Need. Even for his flying visit today, Pudsey was asked for selfies with customers and staff and he also met our very own mascot, Henri the HoverBear.” Hovertravel fundraised with a cake sale and staff dressed up as their favourite celebrity or favourite childhood hero on Children In Need day.

NEWS SNAPS MAYFLOWER SHIP

FISCHER Panda UK is to supply, install and commission a complete electric propulsion system for the innovative Mayflower Autonomous Ship project in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the pilgrim fathers. The 15m trimaran is expected to make the crossing in approximately 12 days at speeds up to 20 knots – a huge leap from the original Mayflower’s journey time of 60 days at 2.5 knots.

POP STAR’S CHARITY SAIL

JOYON’S RECORD

Francis Joyon has broken the record for sailing between Port Saint Louis in Brittany France to Port Saint Louis in Mauritius. He covered the distance in 19 days, 18 hours, 14 minutes and 45 seconds, wiping more than six days off the previous record, one he had set himself more than 10 years ago, averaging over 23 knots on the 11,000 miles covered.

WRECK PROTECTED The wreck of a WW2 fighter plane, nicknamed Maid of Harlech, has been given protected status. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning, which crashed in September 1942, is located off the Harlech coast in north Wales, and becomes visible in the right seas and sand conditions. The pilot, Second Lt Robert F Elliott, who was reported missing in action a few months later, was able to walk away safely from the crash.

Simon Le Bon at the launch of his partnership with the Tall Ship Youth Trust last year

As part of the Tall Ships Youth Trust UK Sailing Challenge Duran Duran frontman, Simon Le Bon, joined a group of teenagers from Tower Hamlets on the final leg of their journey from Cowes. Simon, who is an ambassador for the charity, has been a sailor himself since he was a child. Simon said: “I have really enjoyed meeting the kids and taking part in the final leg of the challenge. A lot of

the youngsters come from deprived backgrounds and are exposed to social problems. This venture gives them the chance to get away from the banality of inner-city life. “ The challenge saw six groups of 10 children complete relay stages circumnavigating the UK. During the voyage the children were responsible for all aspects of sailing including cooking, cleaning and taking the helm.

RYA Cymru Wales has welcomed the first Welsh National Marine Plan, which provides a 20 year plan for sustainable use of the seas around the Welsh coast, including recreational boating.

The Marine Plan includes provisions to support clean, healthy, safe and diverse areas, guide future development and support the growth of marine space and natural resources. It recognises the importance of the tourism and recreation industry in Wales, which can boost coastal economies, as well as increasing the volume of recreational boating as an important activity which should be supported wherever possible. gov.wales/marine-planning

BRITISH WIN AT DESIGN AWARDS WHEN the winners of the DAME Design Awards were announced British designed and manufactured products receiving a third of the accolades presented. The latest innovations from Raymarine UK Ltd, Lumishore, Marlow Ropes, Scanstrut and Dometic received Special Mentions, whilst Category Winners included products from LIGNIA Wood Company Ltd, Garmin Euorpe Ltd and Navico. The ground-breaking design and construction of LIGNIA Yacht outshone its rivals to be named the winner of the ‘marina equipment, boatyard equipment and boat construction tools and materials’ category. In the ‘marine electronics & marine related software’ category, Garmin Europe’s GPSMAP 86i, was honoured as Category Winner. In the ‘machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems and fittings’ category, joint winners, Garmin Europe Ltd, with its

Force™ Trolling Motor, and Navico, with its GHOST, seized victory. Lesley Robinson, British Marine CEO, said: “With UK innovation consistently dominating marine awards and competitions across the globe, the 2019 DAME Design Awards are further confirmation of British excellence and heritage in cutting-edge design and revolutionary technology.” Receiving a nomination for these awards highlights a business as a trendsetter for the next generation of product development. Here again, Britain dominated the field with over a quarter of the products shortlisted for the Awards designed or manufactured in the UK. Out of 59 entries from 54 companies, representing 27 nationalities, the latest products from 16 British Marine members were nominated finalists. These included products from Exposure Lights, Rooster and Ocean LED Marine plus many more.

DOGGY lifejackets introduced with a new range of Harbour Hounds accessories are outselling human ones in the chandlery at Buckler’s Yacht Harbour. Four-legged friends will be wagging their tails with delight at the dog ice cream, tasty treats, hydration drinks and eco-friendly toys. Beaulieu River Harbour Master Wendy Stowe said: “We welcome dogs with their owners at Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour, so adding pet accessories to our range of goods at the on-site chandlery was a natural choice. We held our first marina dog show this summer and my own dog sports a nifty neckerchief from the new range!”

The award-winning yacht harbour took over the running of its own chandlery earlier this year to better serve its customers. Work is currently underway on a £2m redevelopment to reconfigure and extend the Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour to provide more

From 1 April 2020, a 2.5 per cent ‘prompt payment’ discount (reduced from five per cent) will apply for those who pay on time and in full. Similarly, a new 2.5 per cent discount will apply for those who manage their payments online including, for the first time, those paying by direct debit.

In addition to the current length-based pricing, from April 2020 the Trust will start the phased introduction of additional pricing bands for boat widths over 2.16m with a surcharge of five per cent applied until March 2021 (when it will increase to 10 per cent). Income from private boat licences makes up around 10 per cent of the trust’s funding and helps keep the waterways running smoothly. canalrivertrust.org.uk

NEWS SNAPS THE BIG GIVE

The Big Give is the UK’s largest online match funding campaign – it offers supporters of participating charities the chance to double their donation. Tall Ships Youth Trust is aiming to raise £10,550 during the Big Give Christmas live campaign (3 December until midday 10 December). If they reach that target through online donations they will receive £21,000, which will enable the charity to support 20 vulnerable young people on a life changing voyage in the New Year.

SWEET RESCUE

It was reported in The Telegraph that a woman survived two days at sea in a small dinghy with just boiled sweets to eat and no fresh water. Kushila Stein was eventually rescued at sea north of Crete after an extensive search mission. During the day she put a red bag on her head to attract attention. The incident occurred when Kushila rowed ashore to the Aegean island of Folegandros from a yacht, and on her way back lost an oar and was pushed out of the harbour of Agkali by winds.

WINNING SCHOOL

Falmouth’s Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School won four Cornwall Tourism Awards. At the awards ceremony the School received awards in three categories: Active and Sporting Experience (Gold), Access and Inclusivity (Gold) and Learning Experience of the Year (Bronze). They were also crowned Winner of Winners.

NEWS SNAPS SCOTTISH CANALS

Phase Two of the lock gate replacement works at Fort Augustus has started, part of a critical repair programme by Scottish Canals. Works are due to be completed in the spring. “These 200-year-old waterways play a vital role in local communities, generating approximately ÂŁ7m of investment each year for the Highland economy, contributing to the marine industry; attracting tourists, visitor spend and investment as well as stimulating job creation and business growth,â€? said Catherine Topley, Scottish Canals chief executive.

BARBER FOR SAILGP The Great Britain SailGP Team has announced a new member for SailGP Season 2 with Matthew Barber joining as a grinder.

THE Spinlock South Atlantic Showdown, which began at the Uruguayan resort of Punta del Este, delivered what it promised as a close fought standoff between the 11 identical Clipper Race teams played out along the entire 3,555 mile racecourse before overall leaders Qingdao clinched the win. Crossing the finish line beneath Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain after 16 days of racing, Chris Brooks, skipper of Qingdao team, said: “I was always looking for an opportunity to get back into the fleet and then the two low pressure systems came together and it was the perfect opportunity to take one low pressure up and the other round and that was the turning point. It is fantastic to win Race 3 and the welcome into Cape Town has been perfect. In second place was the Unicef team,

skippered by Ian Wiggin, while the third podium place went to Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam, skippered by Josh Stickland (Boating People All at Sea August 2019). Punta del Este had initially been placed second, but a six-hour time penalty for breaching part of the Clipper Race Course Instructions saw them slip to fourth. The next leg began on 17 November and saw the teams leave Cape Town for Western Australia, The Southern Ocean Leg. As they set off, though, Visit Sanya, China and Punta del Este were involved in a collision as they headed towards the first mark. Both yachts returned to the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town where the damage was assessed. Estimates for the repair plan were up to 14 days. The rest of the fleet is expected to arrive into Fremantle Sailing Club between 9 and 14 December.

PLYMOUTH’S maritime business park, Turnchapel Wharf, has opened five new marine enterprise units providing workshop and office space for a variety of local companies. Under the ownership of Yacht Havens Group since 2014, Turnchapel Wharf has been transformed from an ex-Ministry of Defence site into a thriving waterfront business hub. Based on Plymouth’s Cattewater, a number of international firms are based there including Princess Motor Yacht Sales and Thales with their Maritime Autonomy Centre. Speaking about the new buildings and the continued development of Turnchapel Wharf, Yacht Havens Group managing director Dylan Kalis said: “We are continuing to develop the site to ensure it is meeting the requirements of a variety of marine business owners. These new units provide a new base for

five more local businesses, and we will continue to look for opportunities to support these companies as they grow. One of the new tenants is Elite Marine Engineering who has moved into one of the new units after their first year of trading. Elec Marine Ltd has also taken occupancy of one of the new units. The marine electronics firm joined Turnchapel Wharf in 2015 with a smaller office and workshop, but has now moved into a much larger facility. Dylan concluded: “Turnchapel Wharf is now home to over 25 thriving marine businesses from SMEs to large international firms developing the latest in maritime technology and marine autonomy. We still prosper ambitions to develop more parts of the site and ensure Plymouth remains at the forefront of the changing marine industry.

HUGO BOSS HITS TROUBLE ALEX Thomson and Neal McDonald’s Transat Jacques Vabre did not end the way they had planned. The pair announced their withdrawal from the race with the keel of their new 60ft monohull attached only by the hydraulic ram after hitting something in the water whilst travelling at around 25 knots. Hugo Boss had completed just over a third of the 4,350-mile course of this biennial double-handed race to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil from Le Havre, France and were around 380 miles north west of the Canary Islands when the incident occurred. Alex said: “I was stood inside the cockpit just behind the pedestal. Neal was just behind the cockpit door. We are not sure what we hit but it was something big under the water, which must have been submerged to have hit our keel and physically stop the boat at 25 knots. “Neal and I are both physically OK. No major injuries, just some bruises. We were very lucky. If you were to get into your car, close your eyes and drive at 40 miles an hour into a brick wall… that is what it felt like!” Once the situation was assessed it was decided the keel needed to be removed. Ross Daniel, technical director at Alex Thomson Racing, explained: “With the keel attached only by the hydraulic ram, and in an unstable position, there was a serious risk of significant damage to the hull. Therefore, with guidance from our team shore-side, Alex and Neal set about cutting the hydraulic ram to free the keel from the boat. After many hours, they were successful in their efforts.” Five days after the incident Alex Thomson and Neal McDonald arrived safely into the Cape Verde Islands on board HUGO BOSS.

Upon arrival, Alex said: “It was a pretty scary experience for both of us and we are very pleased to be on dry land safely with the team. The next steps are to lift the boat out of the water in order to do a thorough assessment of the damage. We will then bring the boat back to the UK so that we can begin the necessary repair work. “This is, of course, a setback, but the team will be doing everything in its power to move swiftly forwards. As for our objective to win the Vendée Globe in 2020-21? Nothing changes. That remains the sole focus of our team.” Back in the Transat Jacques Vabre, in the Multi50 class, Gilles Lamiré and Antoine Carpentier won on their 50ft trimaran, Groupe GCA – Mille et un sourires, 11 days 17 hours 54 minutes and 41 seconds after leaving France. The pair sailed 4,926 miles at an average speed of 17.56 knots. Charlie Dalin and Yann Eliès on their 60ft monohull, Apivia, won the IMOCA class taking 13 days 12 hours 8 minutes and 0 seconds. Yann retains his title having won the IMOCA class in 2017. Britain’s Samantha Davies and French co-skipper, Paul Meilhat, on InitiativesCœur finished seventh in the IMOCA class, while Boris Hermann and Britain’s Will Harris were twelfth. Miranda Merron and Halvard Mabire, on Campagne de France, finished 23rd in the IMOCA class followed by Pip Hare and Ysbrand Endt in 24th. Ian Lipinsky and Adrien Hardy, on their 40ft monohull, Crédit Mutuel, won the Class40 after 17 days, 16 hours 21 minutes and 23 seconds, while Britain’s Sam Goodchild and Fabien Delahaye finished second on board Leyton. www.transatjacquesvabre.org

NEWS SNAPS VENDEE ENTRIES

After all the excitement of seeing the new HUGO BOSS launched it is disappointing to see Alex’s first race in the revolutionary $7.7 million racing yacht end in such a frustrating way. However it is not the first time Alex has had to end a race early, after crashing out of 2018’s Route du Rhum in 2018, that time whilst leading. Do you think this latest incident will impact on Alex’s Vendee Globe preparations? SUPERYACHT NEWS: BERTHING INVESTMENTS OneOcean Port Vell is a world-class port perfectly positioned in the heart of Barcelona. ability of superyachting marinas in Spain to accommodate the global demand of larger superyachting berths. Proof of Port Vell’s rising attractiveness has been evident during the past years having

raditionally, the South of France might be considered a location where owners are guaranteed to generate high berth profits with marina spaces frequently sold at prices above that of the initial investment. An example, according to James Munn, sales and charter broker with

Northrop & Johnson, is a 30m berth in the South of France that cost £225,000 in the 1970s and was later sold for £12 million in the 1990s when demand outstripped supply. However, this demand seen in traditional areas is decreasing, making way for the rise in popularity of other European destinations - in fact, a recent

study published by Bloomberg revealed that Spain has the largest superyacht fleet in Europe totalling 133 - which is where OneOcean Port Vell comes into play. This sharp rise in popularity follows the

SAM AND SARAH FOR DINGHY SHOW

Image: Facanv/Shutterstock

OVER 29 February - 1 March, double Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Ayton OBE will be joining forces with British Sailing Team’s Sam Whaley at Alexandra Palace to host a range of expert speakers on the Great Hall and West Hall Stages and in the Knowledge Zone at the RYA Dinghy Show. Sarah is famously known as one of the ‘three blondes in a boat’ trio from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games where she won her second gold medal in the Yngling class. She was also named Rolex World Sailor of the Year in 2016 and is currently a performance coach, motivational speaker and busy mum to her two boys. Sam Whaley initially enjoyed racing at his local sailing club before entering his first national competition in 2011. After that he was hooked and at 19 he knew he wanted to pursue a career in sailing. He is

now a member of the British Sailing Team competing in the Laser class. The 2020 show theme is ‘a world of opportunity - see where dinghy sailing can take you.’ From competing on the race course, to travelling the globe, an exciting career on the water or simply spending valuable time outdoors with family and friends, the show will celebrate the unique wealth of opportunities that dinghy sailing provides. Up to four children go free with each paying adult. The ‘weekend ticket’ also returns for those who wish to return for a second day. Advance tickets are available at a discount rate of £10 for RYA members and £12.50 for nonmembers. Discounted weekend tickets are available at £15 for RYA members and £18.75 for non-members. Call the ticket hotline on 0844 858 9069. To buy your tickets visit www.dinghyshow.org.uk.

Originally built ahead of the 1992 Olympic Games, OneOcean Port Vell has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years and is now home to 150 luxury berths catering for yachts up to 190m. Ignacio Erroz, general manager of OneOcean Port Vell, explained: “With a large number of superyachts currently under construction in shipyards around

the world, it will not be long until the number of superyachts exceeds the number of berths in premium locations, especially for 80m+ yachts, inevitably generating a supply and demand imbalance. In turn, at marinas such as OneOcean Port Vell we expect to see the value of these berths grow. “Over the past few years OneOcean Port Vell has played host to two of the most prevalent events in the superyacht industry - The MYBA Charter Show and The Superyacht Show - establishing Barcelona’s position as one of Europe’s primary yachting destinations and significantly increasing the numbers of superyachts berthing at the marina. With the marina’s visibility increasing on a global scale, we have witnessed a rise in rental demand over recent years.”

IN NEED OF BERTHS

Recent reports by the Superyacht Intelligence Agency predict that the current fleet of 60m+ yachts will exceed 500 units within the next seven years with Spain alone set to be home to the highest number of berths (90m+) which can cater to this fleet. With larger berths of this size unavailable across traditional superyachting marinas and an unprecedented number of 60m+ superyachts currently in construction, it will not be long until the number of large superyachts exceeds the number of Mediterranean berths that can accommodate them, making marinas like OneOcean Port Vell an attractive investment opportunity for new owners. www.oneoceanportvell.com

POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTH’S ENGINE NEWS. SUZUKI HEALTH CHECK AND DF300B WINTER is upon us with a vengeance, and storm lashed seas and dark days are the time to get those maintenance and servicing jobs done. In recognition of this seasonal activity Suzuki are offering all owners a free health check on their EFI engines. The offer is valid for all outboards from the DF15 right through to the DF350 and is available at all official Suzuki dealerships countrywide when you book your engine for a service and is valid up until February 2020. In this health check your Suzuki dealer will provide a detailed service report generated from the data downloaded. This will analyse the usage and performance of the engine, flag up any fault codes and diagnose any problems. The data can also highlight any propeller problems and a better solution suggested, which might simply mean an alteration to your existing propeller or having repairs done. If you are considering repowering then this service record will add value to your old engine as a known service history always helps a sale and maintains second hand values. In more Suzuki news, their new DF300B has been launched with a twin, counter rotating propeller. The engine uses the same platform as their flagship DF350 but runs much softer compression to make use of lower grade fuel. The DF350 is a high compression engine at 12:1 that requires high octane fuel to reach its full potential. The new DF300B runs 10.6:1 pistons that can run happily on low octane fuel that is more available over a wider geographical area than the super unleaded that high compression

engines require. The additional grip and torque transmission the greater blade area of the six blades provides on the top-of-the-line DF350 is now available to a wider gamut of boating operations. With the reduction in oil based investment encroaching, seemingly by the day, the time is coming when third world fuel quality will be our norm too, especially if ‘the greens’ continue to hold sway, despite biofuel being a product of the highly unecological palm oil industry.

Sustainable propulsion is used on Niagara’s Maid of the Mist.

AWAY FROM FOSSIL FUELS Image: Lissandra Melo/Shutterstock

IN the opposite corner the electrification thing continues, or should I say the march away from fossil fuels is gathering pace. In the news, the European Investment Bank has issued a statement that says it will, as of next year, no longer be investing in fossil fuel projects. The EIB is the EU’s financing department and it has funded, to the tune of 13.4 billion Euros, projects in the oil, gas and coal industries since 2013. Last year alone it provided 2bn Euros of investment to these projects. Under the new policy, energy projects applying for EIB funding will need to show they can produce one kilowatt hour of energy while emitting less than 250 grams of carbon dioxide, a move which excludes traditional gas-burning power plants. Gas projects will still be possible, but will have to be based on what the bank calls ‘new technologies’ such as carbon capture and storage, combining heat and power generation, or mixing in renewable gases with the fossil natural gas. Andrew McDowell, the EIB’s vice president responsible for energy said: “This is not the last step, this is an important first step.” There are going to be some interesting developments as these policies go ahead. However, in alignment with the above Yamaha has told the world about its new line of electric outboards, with one aimed at saltwater use. The new range covers three models, but the one that is of most interest to us is the MS20 (pictured), boasting 20.4kgs of thrust combined with precision and manoeuvrability. The saltwater ready unit is protected by Advanced Corrosion Protection,

the units are grit blasted then coated in aluminium to prevent oxidation then powder coated to provide the ultimate protective layer. Intuitive and easy to use, the MS20 features fully encapsulated electronics, a sacrificial anode, Digital Maximiser to extend battery life, push button battery meter, lever lock bracket, telescopic tiller, indestructible composite shaft and power propeller to give cool, quiet propulsion. It is easy to handle and comfortable to use, avoids all significant pollutant emissions and maintains an extremely low noise level at all times. Together with an Electric Drive, modern boating enthusiasts can venture out on the water and make the most of their day in a thoroughly safe, modern and clean way. THE GREEN BLUE

GREEN GIFTING

Top tips for an eco-friendly Christmas from The Green Blue - we can all make a conscious choice to purchase gifts that give back to the planet. Kate Fortnam, The Green Blue Campaign Manager.

I

f you are buying a gift this Christmas have you thought about how it might impact the environment? Christmas often comes with excess. Between gift-wrap, food packaging and single-use one-off gifts, the Christmas season can really takes its toll on the planet. But it does not have to be that way. More and more choices exist to gift thoughtfully without causing more harm to the world around us. So this year why not try to make your gifts as environmentally friendly as possible? There is a huge selection of eco-gifts, and here are some top tips to help you to choose your gifts while considering their environmental impact.

RECYCLED MATERIALS

Buying gifts made from recycled products require less natural resources and energy in production and help to minimise waste going to landfill. The Old Salt Loft have designed a team navigator kit bag, made from, you guessed it, recycled sail cloth. These kit bags come with free personalisation features, a name or number, and are ideal for storing all your boating gear. www.theoldsaltloft.com RASH’R reclaim ocean waste, from fishing nets to plastic bottles, and develop bespoke rash vests. www.rashr.com (exclusive discounts available for RYA Members)

in a metal tin, avoiding single use plastic. www.Shadecream.com

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

If you are after something more decorative, Always Plastic Free have a Tide, Time and Moon Clock, which is also made from 100 per cent recycled plastic bottles. alwaysplasticfree.co.uk

NATURAL INGREDIENTS

This is especially important to those frequently on the water. By swapping to natural products it helps to minimise water pollution from chemicals such as phosphates. Friendly Soap have produced a natural all-in-one travel soap for your body, hair and clothes. It is fully bio-degradable and naturally antiseptic. friendlysoap.co.uk For your relatives who love being outdoors, you could try Shades All-Natural sunscreen. It is SPF 25 and is made from organic natural ingredients of shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax, and comes

A great replacement material to plastic and cotton products is bamboo. It is a renewable, fast growing and naturally organic product that does not require fertilisers or irrigation to flourish. It is a versatile product that is considered carbon neutral and biodegradable. Some bamboo based gift ideas include bamboo bed linen, towels and robes from paragonbamboo. All the raw materials are organically grown and the bed linen can be composted when it needs replacing. www.paragonbamboo.co.uk Other sustainable gift ideas to consider are Naked Necessities’ plastic free shaving kits. The metal shaver has a bamboo handle as well as shaving soap made from more natural ingredients. www.nakednecessities.co.uk There is also the Swol Panda vintage bamboo watch from www.alwaysplasticfree.co.uk or perhaps some Bambooy sunglasses. bambooy.co.uk

EVINRUDE E-TEC G2 Proven power, proven reliability

SWAP A GIFT FOR AN EXPERIENCE

The most environmentally consciousgift you can give is not a gift but an experience. This could be an RYA voucher towards a training course or RYA gift membership, a boating experience day such as a sailing lesson, or maybe trying out something new such as a paddleboard hire session, the list is endless. Finally, it is not just the gift itself you need to think about. You may want to consider sending an e-card in support of one of your favourite environmental organisations – WWF or Friends of the Earth, and think about where you purchase the product as this will also have a sustainability impact. If possible, buy gifts from local and/or independent producers. Also, something that is often overlooked is thinking about how you plan to wrap your gift. The majority of wrapping paper can be recycled, with no sellotape or glitter, but keep an eye out for wrapping paper that is FSC certified or made from recycled paper. You can also purchase paper based wrapping tape from www.nonplasticbeach.com preventing the use of single use plastic and making it easier to recycle the discarded wrapping after use. BOATING PEOPLE

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE SAILING LIFESTYLE?

The competitive nature of the racing and the chance to get outside is what I love most about sailing. I also found sailing at university to be a great way to take proper breaks from studying.

Q&A WITH GABRIELLA VINER FROM NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY SAILING CLUB. BEFORE THE GREEN BLUE’S UNIVERSITY SAILING SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE DID YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

HOW DID YOU GET INTO SAILING?

I was inspired by my parents to get into sailing at my local club, Brancaster Staithe Sailing Club. I started sailing Toppers at eight and got involved with the racing and junior sailing as junior fleet captain.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR UNIVERSITY SAILING CLUB.

Newcastle University Sailing Club is both a friendly and competitive sailing club. We compete in all aspects of university sailing, as well as having a strong social side to the club. Sailing takes place at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, where team sailors train on Wednesdays and Saturdays and social sailing takes place on Sundays.

WHAT IS THE UNIVERSITY SAILING SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE?

The University Sailing Sustainability Challenge involves university sailing clubs competing against other universities to undertake as many sustainable actions as possible, in order to reduce the negative impacts that sailing has on our surroundings. The aim is to spread awareness and engage members in the environmental issues sailing can cause.

Yes! I have always had a keen interest in environmental sustainability. My dad is one of the lead authors for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and has been involved in climate change research for many years, meaning I was inspired from a young age. My passion for the environment led me to study Physical Geography at Newcastle University, followed by a masters in Hydrology and Water Management, and then on to my career where I have recently become a Graduate Water Consultant at AECOM. Being an outdoorsy person, I have always been conscious of looking after our natural environment, however I have definitely learnt a lot more about sustainability through the sustainability challenge.

WHAT HAS YOUR CLUB BEEN DOING TO BE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE?

HAVE YOU LEARNT ANYTHING NEW ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL BEST PRACTICE SINCE BEING INVOLVED WITH THE CHALLENGE?

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM BOAT?

My dream boat would be a brand new RS200.

Since starting the Sustainability Challenge I have learnt about the Check Clean Dry approach for environmental best practice. This helps to prevent the spread of Invasive Non-Native Species, which have the ability to smother structures and ecosystems, block vital water intakes, spread disease, clog up propellers, restrict navigation and interfere with fisheries. The practice involves Checking sailing equipment and clothing for plants and animals, Cleaning all equipment, clothes and footwear thoroughly and then Drying them, in order to ensure water is not transferred elsewhere. At Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club we have a wash down area next to the clubhouse, where boats, trailers and equipment can be cleaned with freshwater when boats are brought ashore.

WHAT IS ON YOUR SAILING ‘TO DO’ LIST? In the future I want to continue sailing the RS200 and race at our local sailing club as well as travelling to events when I can. I would also like to do more yachting, preferably in a warm country.

TELL US ABOUT THE SAILORS WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU. I am incredibly inspired by Helena Lucas, being the first ever female winner of the Paralympic 2.4mR class. Also, Ellen MacArthur; as well as being inspirational for her solo trip around the world, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation undertakes research into environmental issues, such as climate change and how we can transition to a circular economy. Read more about the Green Blue on page 14

Using reusable water bottles is just one action Gabriella’s club is taking to be more environmentally sustainable

We have been trying to reduce our environmental impact by saying no to single use plastics and bringing reusable water bottles to training instead of buying disposable ones. It is important to ensure that the reusable bottles are secured properly to our boats when sailing to prevent them from floating away during a capsize and polluting the environment. We have ensured that the environmental risks from fuel spills are kept to a minimum at Derwent Reservoir by placing Spill Kits and instructions from The Green Blue in the petrol stores. Also, we have undertaken litter picks in order to keep the boat park tidy and to prevent harm to birds and mammals if they ingest or became trapped in waste.

hen one watched the TV coverage of the partial demolition of the Fawley power station, it all seemed so very genteel. A puff of smoke, a muffled ‘crump’ and the roof of the massive turbine house was reduced to rumble. In real life, however, the situation was very different, as the explosives used went off with a very loud and violent ‘crash’ that was audible all across the central Solent and gave windows in Hamble a real rattling. The team responsible for clearing the old Fawley site have warned of another blast to bring down the rest of the turbine hall, before the ‘big one’ – the blast that will bring the 198m (650ft) high chimney. SECOND PLANT PLANNED With that, one of the most conspicuous landmarks will disappear after being a great boon to navigation for the past 40 years. Yet the removal of Fawley from the landscape nearly did not work out like this,

for if the CEGB had had their way, it would have been part of a much bigger complex that included Fawley B, a second major power plant on the site. With the South of England enjoying a major building boom in the 1950s and 60s, the CEGB were keen to boost their generating capabilities with a nuclear power station at the environmentally sensitive site at Newtown Creek (as featured recently in these pages). Thankfully the determined opposition to the plan, then the realisation that nuclear would cost more per megawatt hour than coal, saw the Island plan scrapped. With the demand for electricity soaring, in just a few years the CEGB were back with the proposals for Fawley, which would be fuelled by heavy oil that would be fed straight down a pipeline from the nearby oil refinery. Given the lessons learnt at Newtown, the CEGB were mindful of the visual impact the plant would make, so much of the heavy plant was actually located

below ground level in a deep concrete lined trench. When the station came on line in the early 1970s, the four main generating plants when at full power could generate 2,000 megawatts of power, sufficient to power more than a million homes, and the station itself was seen as something of a technical marvel, with experimental supercooled water pumps driving the main sea water cooling system for the station. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT On a cold and still morning, the hot water they pushed back out into Southampton Water would often leave the surface steaming, with many who pointed to the warming of the sea in the vicinity as responsible for the presence of some invasive species. Meanwhile, on the water inlet side there was a very real fear that existing species in the water column were suffering as the station’s own records indicate that some 700 fish a day were being killed, drawing by the flow against the grids and unable to escape. Then, in the middle of the 1980s, with the miners’ strike biting deeply into the UK economy, the CEGB announced plans to build a sister power station to the one at Fawley, with the new, monster mega-station being known as Fawley B. This would be a massive coal-fired station, that would burn its way through more than a large ship load of coal each week. Moreover, rather than risk a dependence on the UK’s mining industry, the station would be consuming cheap imported coal that would be delivered to the station by sea. Getting the coal off these ships and into the furnaces would require the construction of a new jetty system that would swallow up almost a fifth of the navigational channel, in the already congested area just off the mouth of the Hamble River. COAL TRANSPORTATION The jetty would be 650m long, which would allow two 150,000 ton bulk carriers to be moored up on the outer side, with space for small coal carriers on the inside of the jetty. To physically recover the coal

out of the ship’s holds, four coal towers would be needed, with each one the height of a 13 storey building. The coal would then travel along nearly a kilometre of jetty that linked the pier to the shore. An additional concern was that the handling capacity of the jetty was far and above that required to service the power station, which offered the possibility of Fawley becoming a major import hub for cheap coal that would then be distributed by train or by truck over the already congested roads in the ‘Waterside’ area. Nor is it just the local roads that are already very busy, but the main channel

Marinas

Deep water channel

as it sweeps around Calshot Spit is as congested as any arterial route on the land, yet this would be repeatedly blocked as the bulk coal carriers are turned around by a fleet of tugs. The worries just kept on multiplying, for once the coal had been consumed in the boilers, there would still be the ash residue, plus the likelihood of a limestone slurry from attempts to scrub the worst of the impurities out. This could be seriously toxic and laden with heavy metal deposits and which have to be disposed of somehow. There were few that doubted that had Fawley B gone ahead, it would have had a seriously detrimental effect not just on the environment, but on the very nature of Southampton Water and, in particular, on the leisure boating activities that take place. The Calshot Activity Centre, an important location that allows Hampshire school children to get afloat in a safe environment, would be the first casualty as they would lose almost all of their sailing area. PLANS DROPPED Thankfully, even as the CEGB was trying to impose yet another unwanted, wrong power station in the wrong place, it was also becoming the wrong time as the growing environmental lobby and the ‘dash for gas’ saw another U-turn in policy that first back-burnered the plans for Fawley B, then finally dropped them all together. The rising cost of heavy fuel oil meant that operating the original Fawley site was becoming increasing unprofitable, with half of the plant being closed down in the mid-90s, before the decision was taken to completely cease operations in 2013. Soon, there will be one more ‘big bang’ and the chimney will be brought down, with the area then being turned from an austere industrial area into a very attractive location that would include a business park and a whole new housing development. There will be many who will look upon the end of this iconic landmark with maybe a hint of nostalgia, but a huge sigh of relief that not only has it finally gone but that now it will be replaced by something that will add to the western side of Southampton Water, rather than the one, nearly two ugly sites that have been there until now. Thanks to Fawley Waterside for their assistance and the pictures.

PAST THEIR SELL-BY DATE? Avoid the dangers associated with the operation of pyrotechnic flares and the difficulties encountered in disposing of time-expired flares.

THE use of pyrotechnic rocket parachute flares and hand-held flares showing a red light is just one of the methods set out in Annex IV of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 to indicate distress and need of assistance. In 1972 the range of communication equipment available to the recreational boating community was extremely limited and pyrotechnic flares were realistically the only option available to recreational boaters for signalling distress, regardless of how effective they were. That is no longer the case. Modern technology (EPIRB, PLB, VHF DSC, AIS, EVDS and SART) is now able to provide reliable, accurate and timely alerting and location methods without the need for pyrotechnic signals. Indeed, Digital Select Calling VHF radio sets have been available since the turn of the century and allow every other radio in range to be called at the same time in the event of distress.

THE Masterclass

CONCERNS

For some years now, the RYA has been aware that the effectiveness of pyrotechnics as a primary visual signal for distress alerting and location are subject to a number of limitations and drawbacks. The RYA believes that modern technology is now able to provide reliable, accurate and timely alerting and location methods without any of the drawbacks of pyrotechnic flares. LEFT: There are penalties for not disposing of outof-date flares correctly. Image: Dave Welsh Ramora

If you do have flares, it is important you know how to use them

LASER FLARES

The RYA strongly recommends that recreational craft carry both a means of distress alerting and a means of indicating location should Search and Rescue services be required. In addition to electronic distress alerting technology, there is an increasingly diverse range of Electronic Visual Distress Signals – often and wrongly referred to as laser flares – available. In the RYA’s view, the practical drawbacks of pyrotechnic flares and their limited effectiveness in distress alerting, combined with the availability of alternative electronic distress alerting and location indicating technology, mean that pyrotechnic flares are now obsolescent. That said, those who wish to continue to carry pyrotechnic flares should be aware that they have a lifespan and should be replaced before they expire. Expiry dates are printed on the individual flares. The disposal of outof-date flares is a growing problem for

boat owners who face severe penalties if they fail to dispose of out-of-date flares appropriately. For good practice, follow the RYA’s top tips if you choose to carry flares: 1. Keep flares in good condition and accessible at all times on your boat. You should clearly sign where safety equipment is kept on your boat. 2. Make sure you know how to use flares before you go out on your boat so you are ready in an emergency. 3. Check the expiry dates on safety equipment regularly and replace them before they expire. Remember it is your responsibility to dispose of time expired flares properly. The RYA is acutely aware that many boaters have great difficulty in getting rid of out-of-date flares. For that reason people are urged to think carefully about the alternative means of raising a distress alert and for pinpointing their location. For more advice on flare disposal visit www.rya.org.uk/go/flaredisposal.

EXPERTS’ FORUM

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

USING A DEHUMIDIFIER ON BOARD If your boat is laid up near to a power supply you can use a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels down and to prevent potential damage.

CHRIS MICHAEL, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF MEACO (U.K.) LIMITED, HAS THIS ADVICE FOR CHOOSING AND GETTING THE BEST OUT OF AN ON BOARD DEHUMIDIFIER. It is not uncommon for people to use a dehumidifier to protect their boat and their belongings over winter. Organic material in particular is prone to damage from excess moisture, which explains why cushions and bedding often smell musty when you return to your boat in spring. Furthermore, anything paper based like books or pictures can absorb moisture and curl up, not forgetting that wood and veneer can also be attacked.

CHOOSING YOUR DEHUMIDIFIER ■ The boat will be unheated over winter and not all dehumidifiers work well in the cold. ■ You are likely to be carrying this dehumidifier between a car and the boat, so weight comes into consideration. ■ If your boat is still on the water then avoid a dehumidifier with castors as it will roll around. ■ Choose a dehumidifier that has the ability to drain water away continuously. A desiccant dehumidifier operates better in cold conditions and extracts more water than a compressor. As it has an internal heater a desiccant will also add warmth to a space, ideal when there is no heating, plus they tend to be lighter and do not have castors. The Meaco DD8L Junior, for example, is an energy efficient, light weight desiccant dehumidifier, with no castors. When the target relative humidity on the boat is reached it runs its fan for five minutes to check that all is ok and then it turns itself off to save energy. 30 minutes later it turns its fan back on and samples the air again for five minutes. If the relative humidity has increased above its target it starts dehumidifying again, otherwise it goes back to sleep

for another 30 minutes. In a well-sealed boat this will mean that the fan will run for just 10 minutes an hour. It has a hose for continuous emptying and, if the power fails, when it comes back on it will start again in the mode it was left in.

The dehumidifier needs to be on a level surface

GETTING THE BEST OUT OF YOUR DEHUMIDIFIER ■ Place the dehumidifier on a level surface, the galley side. ■ Use a RCD because you are using an electrical appliance on your boat and it will be unattended most of the time. The boat owner must still clean the filter and check the quality of the RCD and power supply. ■ Drain the water away using a hose into a sink (otherwise the dehumidifier will turn itself off when it is full). ■ Use as little hose as possible and do not leave excess curled up in the sink. Too much hose will create a negative air pressure and the water will not flow down the hose, the tank will fill and the dehumidifier will turn off. ■ Do not use a plug-in timer switch with your dehumidifier. This is like giving your appliance a power cut twice a day and will damage it in the long run. ■ Seal the boat up the best you can. ■ Leave the internal doors open so that the damp air in the boat can migrate towards the dehumidifier and be dried. www.meaco.com

ALL BILL WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS IS...

Bill looks at Christmas gift possibilities for his boat, himself and The Admiral.

Bill is impressed by the range of Offshore and Crew Jackets from AquaMarine

WELL, the much-enjoyed drier days of early October have given way to a much wetter November – and has put paid to many of the additional outside jobs I had planned to do on the boat. Fortunately for me, my winterising plans were well underway, and so it is now an occasional visit to the boat for a general look over to make sure everything is how it should be – unfortunately for ‘The Admiral’ it means more time with me being around and upsetting the general routine! This has allowed some time for planning what I want to get done on the boat in preparation for next season, as I have several projects I am considering: the deck hatches are looking tired and I am concerned about leaks; I am going to have to look at improving the anchoring arrangements – possibly by upgrading to a small windlass, and I am sure I am going to have to look at the plumbing in the new year. This moved on to the usual questions from ‘The Admiral’ about plans for Christmas gifts – and the threat of more socks if I wasn’t more forthcoming… So, challenge accepted - I undertook some research into what would put smiles on the faces of my nearest and dearest in the festive season. First up, with our plans to spend more time aboard next season, and potentially more short breaks on the boat, my thoughts moved to how I could treat it by smartening up the cabin. I am more than aware that the old clock has now stopped working and being right twice a day is not much use. The barometer has also become less accurate than a tv weather forecast! I chanced upon a new range of attractive instruments from AquaMarine – which I noted were offered in brass and chrome and, importantly, in three different sizes. Although the chrome looks very smart, I think I would opt for the traditional classic brass as it is more in keeping with the cabin I have – especially if I go for one of the beautifully crafted wooden mounted plaques which combines clock and

barometer. These are arranged vertically, which is very handy for the boat as it gives me the option of a couple of locations that this arrangement will perfectly suit. It will also quickly upgrade the cabin as it is such a simple fitment. Next, I moved on to ‘The Admiral’ and remembered when I was planning for the Southampton Boat Show, that comments had been made about how much better the traditional sailcloth holdalls and bags are now – far more appealing and stylish. At the show, I got a chance to look over some of these and was impressed to see how well made they are, featuring a lined interior and useful pockets for all the bits you need to keep separate and access quickly. Head and shoulders above all the versions I saw at the show was the extensive range from Bainbridge – which I was pleased to see are offered in different colours and some good contrasting details which really contributed to the overall look. The black range they have launched really appealed as they had some good sized crew bags which could hold all the things I am told we need for our trips, won’t show marks so easily and are good enough to be used for the odd trip we make away from the boat. The difficulty will now be choosing which of the designs is best suited to ‘our’ requirements. Finally, I did have a long hard think about what I needed and decided my old oilskins are getting well past their best. A recent trip out in the appalling weather we have had – off the boat, I hasten to add - proved that their waterproof abilities are long gone. Not wishing to push the budget too far, I looked around at what was on offer and was very impressed by the well thought out range of Offshore and Crew Jackets from AquaMarine. The clever bit about these is that they have matched the colour of the Crew Jacket to the Offshore Suit they make, which means I can get a lighter Crew Jacket with a matched pair of trousers, which is ideal for the sailing we do. It also gives the future option of adding the Offshore Jacket should I need to in the future. The other great thing about them is the waterproof ratings are very good – equivalent to higher priced brands – and they combine this with good breathability – so will be comfortable to wear. I also like the thought of the padded knees in the hi fit trousers, which are a good feature and should make things a lot more comfortable for me. The pricing of these is very good, and means if I am lucky, I could end up with a complete suit for what I have previously spent on just a jacket. I guess I just need to make sure I drop enough hints at the right moment…

ARE YOU EQUIPPED FOR DISTRESS? RYA revises guidance for marine radio users - do you know the emergency distress guidelines?

P

ress and hold the distress red button on your DSC VHF and it will transmit your distress alert every four minutes until another station acknowledges it; an EPIRB, once activated, will transmit for a minimum of 48 hours, alerting search and rescue services in the event of an emergency that you need help; fire a parachute flare and you have to cross your fingers, hope that someone is close enough, that they were looking in the right direction during the 40 seconds it will burn for, they see it, recognise it for what it is and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. As the winter months approach, it is a good time to think carefully about emergency distress alerting and locating equipment on board your vessel. The RYA provides guidelines for skippers of pleasure craft under 13.7m on the types of emergency distress alerting and locating equipment they can choose to carry based on distance from the coast and GMDSS communications sea areas at www.rya.org.uk/go/safety. Modern technology provides safer and more reliable options for distress alerting than pyrotechnic flares, and presuming such technology is carried aboard a pleasure vessel, the owner may wish to consider reducing their complement of flares. Electronic Visual Distress Signals are hand-held non-pyrotechnic devices that may be offered as alternatives to pyrotechnic flares. Whilst the cost, safety of use, ease of testing and disposal of these items might be attractive, EVDS should not be carried as a primary means of indicating distress (they are not currently listed as an internationally recognised distress signal in Annex IV of COLREG), however they do provide a nonpyrotechnic means of indicating where you are in the final mile when someone is looking for you.

THE FINAL MILE

However, simply telling someone you need help may not be enough; they also need to be able to locate you. Search and Rescue services, equipped with radar and specialist homing equipment, may not need anything further than the initial distress alert, but in many instances locating the vessel in need of help in the ‘final mile’ can be challenging, especially if the rescuer is another small craft. Traditionally a handheld red flare at night or in poor visibility or an orange smoke by day has been the most effective solution for this ‘final mile’ pinpointing of the vessel in distress. EVDS do now, however, provide a viable alternative.

NON-TRADITIONAL FLARES

It is now possible for a pleasure vessel under 13.7m (which is not by law required to carry flares) to be equipped for distress alerting without carrying traditional pyrotechnic flares. An alerting device listed in COLREG such as EPIRB (ideally with GPS) or DSC marine radio set (correctly connected to the GPS) together with some form of EVDS for location in the final mile may well be an affordable, more reliable and suitable combination.

With the arrival of winter, it is a good time to assess the safety equipment you have on board

The Coastguard should respond to a distress message and co-ordinate the assistance. Image: MCA

small craft that do not have the ability to fit or carry standard GMDSS equipment. The RYA SafeTrx app monitors your boat journeys and can alert emergency contacts should you fail to arrive on time. It is an app for both Android and Apple iOS smartphones that allows you to track your journey on your phone. The app provides all recreational boat users, particularly dinghy cruisers, PWC, RIB users, canoers, kayakers, wind and kite surfers and smaller boat users, with an easily accessible and simple to use means that can inform HM Coastguard of their voyage plans and dynamic location in the event of distress. It does not replace GMDSS, EPIRB, PLB or AIS.

MARINE RADIO DISTRESS RELAY PROTOCOL

Following consultation with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Association of Marine Electronic and Radio Colleges, the RYA has issued revised guidance regarding the procedure for sending a ‘Distress Relay’. In a relay situation, there is no longer a requirement to send a DSC ‘Urgency Announcement’. The ‘Mayday Relay’ voice call remains unchanged and should still be transmitted as normal.

HOW IT WORKS

If a distress is received by DSC or voice, the skipper of a vessel should act as follows: 1. Wait five minutes for the distress to be acknowledged by the Coastguard or another vessel. 2. If no acknowledgement or distress working is heard, send a ‘Received Mayday’ voice call to the station in distress, then: 3. Relay the distress message to the nearest Coastguard, which may be by any means, but should primarily be sent using a ‘Mayday Relay’ voice call addressed to the specific Coastguard station followed by repetition of the original ‘Mayday message’. 4. The Coastguard should respond and take over distress working and co-ordinate the assistance. 5. If unable to contact a Coastguard station, send a ‘Mayday Relay’ call, addressed to ‘All Stations’, followed by the repetition of the original ‘Mayday message’. You should then prepare to co-ordinate the assistance to the vessel in distress between yourself and any other vessels in the vicinity. The same approach, starting at step three, should be taken if you believe another vessel, aircraft, person or vehicle is in distress and unable to transmit its own distress signal.

The RYA SafeTrx app will monitor your journey and alert emergency contacts if you do not arrive on time

BE PREPARED

If you have a VHF radio on board your boat, or carry a handheld VHF whilst out on the water, you need to hold an operator’s licence. The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate course is a one-day course aimed at anyone who wants to operate a marine VHF radio, with or without Digital Selective Calling. Vital for days out boating, it covers radio functionality, how to relay information clearly and swiftly in an emergency situation, as well as hands-on practice of operating and talking over the radio. Supporting information, including the simplified distress relay protocol, can also be found in the RYA VHF Handbook (G31). Find out more about RYA training courses at www.rya.org.uk/training, or visit www.rya.org.uk/shop to browse the full selection of RYA publications.

GET THE RYA SAFETRX APP

Whilst components of the GMDSS system remain the preferred means for communication and distress alerting, the RYA SafeTrx app is a useful backup and particularly helpful for those on the many

You can enter your journey details directly from your smartphone and plan a trip knowing that should you not arrive by the time given, a nominated emergency contact will be alerted and advised to initiate appropriate action. Where an emergency contact calls HM Coastguard about an overdue trip, the Coastguard will have access to your location and SafeTrx trip data through a secure standalone SafeTrx server. Since RYA SafeTrx periodically sends your location data back to a dedicated server, HM Coastguard’s response team can get help directly to you, and quickly. Visit www.rya.org.uk/go/SafeTrx to start your journey today. RYA members can find further information, knowledge and advice about safe boating at www.rya.org.uk/go/safety.

There is revised guidance from the RYA regarding the procedure for sending a ‘Distress Relay’

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

“We have been here for 18 years. The location right in the centre was an attraction, it ticked all the boxes and we have made many friends in the marina over the years. It is a very friendly place. When we moved five hours away, the lock gate gave us the comfort that the boat was as safe and secure as it could be. We would, and do, recommend Sutton Harbour Marina to other potential berth holders.” Liz and Nigel

ACCESS

By sea, Sutton Harbour Marina can be found at Lat: 50o 21’ , 98N Long: 04o 07’ ,96W, and the marina is contactable on VHF channel 12, call sign “Sutton Marina”. The marina is accessible by sea via Sutton Lock, situated to the east side of Plymouth Waterfront. The lock is free, staffed 24 hours a day and operational upon request. Passage through is controlled by a system of

traffic signals displayed both day and night from masts at the north and south ends of the lock. The light signals are operated by the duty lock keeper in conjunction with the lock gates and passenger footbridge. Contact for passage through the lock should be made at all times by calling “Sutton Lock” on VHF channel 12 maintaining a listening watch thereafter until passage through is complete.

“It is lovely to have everything the city has to offer within walking distance and the contrast to this, the marina, is incredible. We have been here eight years and our neighbours for 19 years. Customer service is a really important thing and we cannot fault the staff at all. It is very protected in here; once you come through the lock gates it is so much calmer.” Rita and Darren

There is a free flow period of up to three hours before and after high tide when locking through is not required. Plymouth is well served by road and public transport links. The M5 and A38 Devon Expressway connect with the national motorway network. Mainline rail services are available to Plymouth Rail Station, which is a five minute taxi ride or 20 minute walk from the marina.

CRUISING

The marina offers easy access to some of the best sailing waters in the UK found along the Devon and Cornwall coast, and the chance to berth in a city that is both steeped in maritime history as well as the host for many international sailing events including the America’s Cup, Transat, Rolex Fastnet Race, OSTAR and TWOSTAR. The marina’s setting in the heart of Plymouth makes it easy to explore the South West, being equally as close to Cornwall and its spectacular coastline as it is to the rugged moors of Devon. Plymouth has one of the finest deep water harbours in the country and offers direct access to some of the best cruising waters in the UK, including the rivers Yealm, Tamar and Lynher, which are all within easy reach for a day trip. Stunning Devon destinations like Dartmouth, Salcombe, Brixham and Torquay are to the east and picturesque Cornish ports such as Fowey, Falmouth are to the west. Further afield lie the beautiful Isles of Scilly, just 94nm away, and the Channel Islands or French coast are also within striking distance for long weekends.

THINGS TO DO

Relaxation or adventure, afloat or ashore, Sutton Harbour Marina occupies an enchanting position in the heart of Plymouth’s historic waterfront quarter, with an outstanding year-round selection of restaurants, cafes, bars and independent boutique shops. A foodie’s delight awaits with a plethora of restaurants including Rockfish, pizza at The Stable, Honky Tonk Wine Library, Supha’s thai cuisine, Miller & Carter Steakhouse, the Ship and Boston Tea Party to name a few. Berthing in Plymouth provides opportunities to enjoy the city’s packed events calendar year-round, which includes the national British Fireworks Championships and popular familyfriendly events including Pirate Weekend, Plymouth Seafood Festival and the Ocean

City Jazz and Blues Festival. There are also many beautiful cliff top walks such as the South West coast path as well as rugged Dartmoor to explore. Land-based adventures include trekking, horse-riding, climbing and mountain biking. Berth holders can also visit the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth Theatre Royal, Plymouth Gin Distillery, The Box IMAX cinema and enjoy shopping at major high street chains based at Drake Circus mall. Furthermore, Plymouth is about to take centre stage during the worldwide commemorations for Mayflower 400 in 2020, with a host of events held next year to mark the 400 year anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers setting sail for America from the Mayflower Steps. Sutton Harbour Group is a Founder Partner of the Mayflower 2020 commemorations and

“Sutton Harbour Marina is ideal for A, its proximity to the city centre, so we can go to the theatre and do shopping very conveniently and B, for the sailing. If the weather is poor you can stay in Plymouth Sound, if it is not you can go east or west to lots of lovely coves and bays. We have always found customer service to be very good; we have been to other marinas in Plymouth and this is our favourite by far. We have been here five years now. We chose it as it is the most sheltered and well-maintained. We recommend it to our boating friends and will continue to do so.” Gordon

berth holders at its two marinas will be best-placed to enjoy taking part in various events and celebrations planned for the anniversary year.

SWANWICK UPGRADE

OVER the coming winter months Premier Marinas will be undertaking the second phase of a rolling redesign and replace project at Swanwick Marina on the UK’s south coast. The project is taking place in two stages and when completed the marina will comprise 333 berths in a modern facility fitted out to the highest standards. Phase 1A was undertaken in the months before Christmas 2018 and saw the installation of Piers A and B with a total of over 100 berths. Phase 1B began in early 2019 with piers C and D going in along with a double bridgehead and a truss bridge in time for the start of the season. In October 2019, Walcon resumed work on the site with Phase 2. This involves removing the existing E pontoon along with its piles and then, once dredging is completed, installing its replacement along with its piles. E pontoon will then be linked with the single access central bridgehead at D pontoon. That completed, MDL SHAMROCK QUAY Manager: Barry Radband William Street, Northam, Southampton Hampshire. F pontoon will be removed and then in the New Year dredging will be followed by the new F pontoon plus a G pontoon going in along with a second access bridge and a marina operative bridge. Completion is scheduled for the spring of 2020. Premier Marinas has specified a facility of exceptional sophistication. An example of their attention to detail includes a higher freeboard for the pontoons forming Piers C and D, thereby reducing customers’ deck-to-pontoon ‘jump down’ when berthing a vessel. All the finger pontoons will be the full length of the boats that will be using them, thereby enabling power boats to use their bathing platforms for embarkation and disembarkation. SHIP SHAPE AND BRISTOWE FASHION PREMIER Marinas has announced that Graham Bristowe has been appointed to the post of marina manager at Swanwick Marina. Graham brings a wealth of experience to the job, having managed a leisure complex in the Channel Islands, before joining Premier Marinas in 2003. His 16 years with the organisation has seen him manage Gosport Marina and Chichester Marina and in recent years Graham has been employed as general manager for Portsmouth Harbour, overseeing the operations of both Southsea and Port Solent marinas. A competent sailor, Graham enjoys sailing his Westerly Griffon with his family in his spare time and undertaking ultra -running challenges – one of his biggest achievements being the Marathon des Sables in 2012; a 150 mile run through the Sahara. In addition to bringing experience to Premier’s Swanwick team, Graham will be responsible for managing Swanwick Marina through a significant regeneration that will elevate its current position as Premier’s flagship marina, one of the finest on the South Coast.

Graham is supported in this task by experienced duty manager, Peter Pring and said the following: “I am thrilled to be taking on this new challenge with Premier. With the second phase of marina development now underway and the future land development on the horizon, this will be a truly exciting phase in the development of Swanwick Marina.”

MDL Marinas has announced the appointment of Tim Mayer as sales and marketing director. A member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Tim joins MDL with a wealth of senior sales experience across the leisure industry. From Tim’s most recent role, at the successful health and fitness chain, Everyone Active, he brings an appreciation and understanding of customer service. Tim told All At Sea: “I am delighted to be joining MDL Marinas and working in the marine side of the leisure industry. I am looking forward to working alongside the marina teams to take MDL’s customer experience initiatives to a whole new level, creating a service which is second to none at each and every marina in the group.” Marina management teams have also seen new arrivals recently, further strengthening the service offered to berth holders and tenants onsite. Lee Gibbons joined MDL as Thames marina manager in August. Having started his career at Penton Hook Marina as a boat washer in the early 1990s, Lee has a rich history of working

Lee is also chairman of British Marine’s London & Thames Valley Regional Association, connecting him across the area and the industry. Swelling the ranks further on the Thames is John Harris, who has joined Bray and Windsor Marinas as assistant manager. In line with MDL’s policy to provide equal opportunity for the advancement of employees and its desire to encourage career progression internally, MDL announced that Barry Radband has been promoted to marina manager at Shamrock Quay. “I am very excited to be leading the team at Shamrock Quay and driving the future success of the marina,” said Barry. isitors to MDL’s Hamble Point Marina cannot help but notice the champagne gold Sunseeker, aptly named Gold Digger, which sparkles in the sunshine. It belongs to Neil Desty, owner of Desty Marine. But why gold? “We did it to showcase what we can do on the refit side as it is really difficult for us to show clients a finished boat because they are usually handed over straight away,” Neil explains. “We chose the gold to make it stand out.” Well, it certainly does that. Under Neil’s steady leadership Desty Marine saw rapid growth in the 2000s. ”We were awarded contracts by Sunseeker, and this gave us the opportunity to showcase our ability and quality,” says Neil. “Our relationship with Sunseeker and other leading manufacturers then grew from that point to the growth we have achieved to date”

The business has moved into new premises at Hamble Point Marina

NEW PREMISES

Desty Marine has been based at MDL’s Hamble Point Marina from the start. “There were just three of us when I joined the business; there are now nearly 70 employees in the company. We have just moved into brand new premises at Hamble Point which offer us a much larger and smarter, customer friendly environment,” continues Neil. “MDL has been great – really reactive to what we need from the new offices to greater shed space with roller shutters to accommodate the hoist, so we can move the larger vessels that we work on in and out. It has meant that we have been able to stay at this great location as we have grown.” The quick access to the Solent and beyond has been a key factor in the success of the business.

“We now have an amazing team and a great base here at Hamble Point Marina where we believe we can continue to grow and produce quality workmanship that makes us stand out ust li e boat reall .

Neil says: “Companies like Princess who are in Plymouth and Sunseeker from Poole bring their boats by water for us to carry out bespoke paint work. Once signed off they will go straight from here to Southampton docks to be shipped abroad. It is ideal really. The other thing about being so close to the Solent is that there is plenty of racing, providing the opportunity for us to assist with general maintenance and accidental damage.” A large part of Desty’s business may come from the manufacturers of the luxury brands, but this does not mean they are not committed to the berth holders at Hamble Point Marina. “Many of our clients are berthed at Hamble Point Marina; no job is too big or too small for us.”

APPRENTICESHIPS

Neil Desty’s Sunseeker certainly stands out – for all the right reasons

Although he started out on the tools, Neil now spends most of his time representing the company in client meetings and focusing on moving the business forward. A key area that he is concentrating on at the moment is inhouse training. “We noticed that the training programmes available are outdated with colleges being a long way behind in their repair techniques and the materials used. Previously, we trained people on the job, but whenever a pinch point came, we would have to take them off the job to get it finished and handed over,” Neil explains.

The new premises offer a more customer friendly environment

“To solve this, we have bought an older used boat and put it in the workshop. We have five apprentices starting shortly and they will be working on the training vessel, learning all aspects of GRP and engineering on an actual boat. This will provide them with the unique experience to acquire the skills needed in a far more relevant manner. In-house training is the most efficient way to continue to develop and grow our skilled workforce.”

STANDING OUT

Desty’s investment in its staff certainly seems to pay off. “The key management team members generally started with us 15 to 17 years ago and have progressed to management and senior management positions, commanding teams of their own with the company,” concludes Neil. “We now have an amazing team and a great base here at Hamble Point Marina where we believe we can continue to grow and produce quality workmanship that makes us stand out – just like my boat really.”

SWEET CHRISTMAS TREATS FOR YOU BY PAUL ANTROBUS

Malmsey. This latter is sometimes an alternative generic which pops up in TV period dramas. Some older readers may remember the Flanders and Swann comic song ‘Have Some Madeira M’Dear’. Supermarkets will have several ports and sherries but usually only one or two Madeiras. The most likely will be Blandy’s, an Englishman who curtailed his Atlantic sailing voyage to stay in Madeira and established a winery in 1811. It is still owned and operated by the same family, and if you ever sail there, try the whole Blandy’s range and take its Wine Lodge tour. Here, Waitrose has Blandy’s Duke of Clarence, 19 per cent, £12.39, 75cl and a five-year-old version at £15 for a 50cl bottle. Madeira has potential as an apéritif but is more likely to be a highlight of Christmas dinner to go with cheese or traditional Christmas pudding.

MORE FESTIVE DRINKS

A good sweet red wine to go with mince pies is Banyuls from the French town of that name a few miles from the Spanish border, next stop Barcelona, and sometimes dubbed the French cousin of port. Most sweet French wines use Muscat, Semillon and Grenache grapes. They are late harvested in the autumn once they develop a mould called ‘the noble rot’, which has to be precisely timed before the mould turns to ‘grey rot’ which renders them useless. The late harvest causes the grapes to shrivel up, which provides a high sugar content that produces more alcohol. Add a year or more in maturing oak barrels and the cost inevitably mounts up. Banyuls, bottled at 16 per cent abv, is £21.95 for a 75cl bottle from Yapp Brothers, www.yapp.co.uk. Want to go English this year of all years? The Lyme Bay Winery in Axminster, Devon has a very appropriate offering named Christmas Pudding Wine with a festive holly label. This is a sweet, spicy, glutenfree wine with a hint of raisins, lighter at only 10 per cent but just right for more or less any Christmas dinner dessert, along with the brandy sauce. 8 3 It is not widely distributed - I found it at my local garden centre Christmas shop - but you can buy it 1 online from masterofmalt.co.uk or direct from the 5 8 9 winery, £9.25 for 75cl at 10 per cent a.b.v.

‘pudding’ wine with the dessert course of a meal is not as common as it once was. These are sweet wines fortified with brandy or neutral spirit to bring the abv up close to 19 per cent. Now it seems there is a revival in the genre in trendy London bars and restaurants as a drink in its own right, not specifically linked to desserts or puddings. This revival is led by Madeira and it is being drunk, as it historically always was, as an apéritif or a sociable drink on its own. 3 7 5 A recent issue of the London Evening Standard 2 5 8 1 reported the Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels wine 6 9 2 bar in Neal’s Yard (Covent Garden area) as saying its 4 9 “Madeira menu is more popular than ever”. 3

It is an old wine going back to the 1700s when Madeira, some 300 miles due west of Morocco, was the last stopoff for ships crossing the Atlantic, although the Canaries and Cape Verde further south might debate this. Wine was shipped aboard and brandy added to preserve it. The natural maturation in barrels and the time and motion of the ship and temperature changes on the voyage made the wine virtually imperishable.9The matured colour7is a 2 8 muddy red. 8 4 5 4 9 Modern day makers replicate this process on land 5 3 1 9 8 3 using grain spirit instead of brandy, and four grape 4 3 8 types, from dry to sweet, Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and
