Round the Island Race under threat? 3
All At SeA FEBRUARY 2015
FROM PAGE ONE: A world first could be coming to the Isle of Wight if the Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre’s application to the Marine Management Organisation and Isle of Wight Council for permission to construct and operate a tidal energy demonstration site off St Catherine’s Point to the south of the Isle of Wight is granted. If consent is given construction could start in late 2016, creating hundreds of jobs. However but concerns have been raised about the project, which would lie in the path of the Round the Island Race (RTIR) which takes place on June 27. The annual one-day J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race yacht race organised by the Island Sailing Club attracts around 16,000 boats, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK. Also raises thousands of pounds for charity. Mark Francis, Project Manager for PTEC said: “It will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world, reinforcing the UK’s reputation as world-leaders in the wave and tidal industry. “We have already undertaken a comprehensive programme of engagement with regulators, the local community and other stakeholders, and will continue to work closely with them as the project progresses.” The plan is for the Isle of Wight to be supplied with clean, renewable energy generated from tidal currents in the sea south of the Isle of Wight with the total electrical output expected to be over 50,000 MWh per year. The Island Sailing Club is just one of many organisations who have been working with
Perpetuus to ensure the needs and issues of all concerned have been taken into consideration, but at present the impact on this hugely popular event, which brings thousands of sailors to the Isle of Wight each year, is unclear. Although, The Island Sailing Club have made it clear the event will go on whatever the obstacles thrown at them. The Race Management Team told us: “The Island Sailing Club has been involved, along with many others including the RYA, in discussions with the Perpetuus team, to mitigate any issues and concerns over the Tidal Energy development that may affect the J P Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. “These discussions have been taken into consideration so far and, we are sure, will be included in their future plans. The club has, over many years worked with, and alongside, many developments which might have affected the race to ensure our competitors are able to continue to enjoy this iconic event.” Islanders have also spoken out, expressing their worries about the impact on the Round the Island Race and the landscape as much of the coastline is protected. As well as turbines in the water causing concern there will be the associated structures required on land.

Plans showing the position of the works can be seen at the Isle of Wight Council offices in Newport and on the council’s planning website. The marine licence application and supporting information is available to view on the MMO’s public register (case reference MLA/2014/00563).

ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2015
ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde
AFTER last month’s dramatic grounding by the Hoegh Osaka we have been closely following events in the Solent as the car transporter was eventually moved to the Port of Southampton where the multi-million pound cargo was finally removed. Many dents and scratches were spotted on the cars as they were driven off the ship, but there’s no word as yet as to their, or the ship’s, eventual fate. It would seem a shame to scrap cars which appear to be fairly good condition, but there will also be concerns about the effect the 19 days stuck in the Solent will have had on the vehicles’ internal workings. You also have to ask yourself whether you would want to buy and drive one of those cars. And many other questions remain about the incident. Staying on the south coast, the proposed Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre to the south of the Isle of Wight has been creating waves amongst sailors not least because it would lie in the path of the Round the Island Race (RTIR). While the impact on the race, if any, is not yet known, it will of course raise concerns as this is one of the biggest sporting events in the country loved by thousands of sailors and an important revenue generator for the local area. Visitor numbers were up at January’s London Boat Show, which
is great news. There was certainly a lot of positivity around and exhibitors have been reporting good sales. As you’ll see from the picture below, while at the show, I bumped into All At Sea’s ex-editor, Georgie Corlett. I also met an incredibly inspirational young lady, Lizzy Foreman, who is working towards the 2015 Mini Transat in September when she’ll be racing solo across the Atlantic over 4000 nautical miles in a boat only 6.5m long. We’ll be supporting Lizzy and following her build-up and progress throughout the year. Lizzy has sailed since the age of three and is proof that you really can follow your dreams, which leads me on to Lauren, also pictured below. She is lucky enough to have been born into a sailing family and, as you can see, already has the sailing bug. Perhaps in years to come it will be Lauren making the headlines in All At Sea. If you have children who have a passion for sailing too we’d love to see the photos. This month we say goodbye to one of our regular columnists, Shelley Jory-Leigh. We have really enjoyed reading her monthly powerboating reports over the years and will continue to follow her endeavours with great interest. We wish Shelley all the best for the future. editor@allatsea.co.uk

UNCERTAIN FUTURE FOR HOEGH OSAKA
Images: Southern Daily Echo
THE Hoegh Osaka ferry was successfully towed back to Southampton Water Berth 101 by four tugs on 22 January, 19 days after deliberately being run aground on Bramble Bank soon after it set sail for Germany. The search for answers by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch into why the ship began to list is underway and the cargo ship is set to stay in Southampton while the salvors handover responsibility of the ship to Norwegian owners Hoegh Autoliners. Lief Hoegh, of Hoegh Autoliners, said, “There were no serious injuries to people or to the surrounding area so seeing the ship being moved back in to port was the outcome we had hoped for when the incident happened.” The initial 52 degree list was reduced to five degrees to allow the Hoegh Osaka to be towed to port, a journey which took around three hours. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said, “I congratulate all those who have worked tirelessly day and night to bring this ship back to port. They battled exceptionally difficult weather conditions with extraordinary dedication and courage.” There has been a great deal of praise for those involved in the rescue and salvage operations which were at times hampered
by bad weather and strong winds. Hugh Shaw, the secretary of state’s representative for maritime salvage and intervention, praised the “skill and professionalism” of all parties involved. In his tribute to the salvage company Svitzer for preventing a potential environmental disaster, Mr Shaw said: “If they hadn’t got on board and found the crack in the hull and repaired it, we would have been looking at a much worse situation.” The Environment Agency confirmed no pollution had occurred although contingency plans had been in place. In the event that an oil leak had occurred from the Hoegh Osaka, Cowes Harbour Commission would have prioritised protection of key areas as per the Cowes Harbour Oil Spill Response Plan. It has also been highlighted by numerous people that in the initial grounding of the vessel by the ship’s captain, not only did the decision potentially save the lives of the 25 crew, but prevented both an environmental and economic disaster. As the ship lay away from the main navigable channel the port was able to run normally with some speed restrictions near the Hoegh Osaka.
READER LETTER
A TICK ON MY BUCKET LIST
As I approach my 80th birthday I’m compiling a ‘bucket list’ of things I would like to do while I’m still around. One of these is to charter a yacht with a skipper to attend the last Friday of Cowes Week this year to remind me of the many happy times I enjoyed racing my SCOD in the regatta. I would like to start and finish at a mainland port and to stay aboard the boat on Thursday and Friday night. I envisage cruising around to watch some starts on the Friday morning, sailing to Yarmouth for lunch, then returning to Cowes to watch the fireworks. No catering would be required. However, we would need a large and comfortable boat for a party of seven or more. The good news is that some of them have extensive sailing experience and could help with the warps and fenders. The bad news is that others are old and frail so that all departures and arrivals would need to be via pontoons. We could afford to pay a substantial sum but not the high fees required for some corporate charters. So is there a big-boat owner out there somewhere who would be interested? Anthony Curtis, Suffolk Please reply via editor@allatsea.co.uk
OFFSHORE TO THE RESCUE
OFFSHORE Performance, supported by Golden Arrow Marine is expanding its product line with the arrival of the Sea-Doo Search and Rescue. Offshore Performance is the only UK dealer to receive the all-new Sea-Doo, a personal watercraft built specifically for water rescue operations. Developed with input from fire rescue personnel and other professional end users, the Sea-Doo SAR is built with the strength and stability necessary for pulling people out of rough, deadly water. It is designed for rescue performances, from surf to white-water, during a flood or along a rocky coast. It is also ideal for evacuation, surveillance and interception. www.offshoretoys.co.uk / www.goldenarrow.co.uk
Southampton’s port currently contributes £1billion to the UK’s economy every year. The Port of Southampton said: “Port operations have been unaffected throughout”. Had the incredibly busy shipping channel leading to the port of Southampton been blocked the city would have lost millions of pounds and ultimately lost trade and jobs. It would have been a massive blow to the entire region’s economy and has led to discussions about the possible ramifications should a similar incident occur in the future. The cargo on board the vessel is thought to be worth in the region of £60m and included 1,200 Jaguars and Land Rovers and a Rolls-Royce Wraith, valued at £235,000. The vehicles have been removed from the ship but whether they are destined to be scrapped or ‘recycled’ remains to be seen. Photographs of cars being removed from the ship showed dents and scratches, but it is possible they may need to be scrapped after a similar accident in 2006 lead to 4,700 Mazdas being crushed. Then the question remains about what will happen to the Hoegh Osaka itself. Has the 14-year-old ship come to the end of its working life?
WILL VIRGIN SUPPORT BEN?
5
ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2015
Sir Ben Ainslie and Georgie Thompson on Necker Island with Sir Richard Branson Courtesy: Jack Brockway
NEWSPAPERS have reported that Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group may join other well-known names backing Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup bid. It is thought that the final decision has not yet been taken by Virgin Group. However, if they do decide to give financial support to Ben Ainslie Racing, Virgin Group will be joining a list of well-known names giving their support or sitting on the board of BAR. They include Sir Keith Mills, the former deputy chairman of the organising committee of the 2012 Olympic Games, Carphone Warehouse founder Sir Charles Dunstone and former BBC chairman Lord Grade. It is thought Sir Ben spoke to Sir Richard about the project when he spent time on Branson’s Necker Island with his wife, Georgie Thompson. Ainslie and Georgie had been enjoying an idyllic honeymoon in the British Virgin Islands when their boat suffered a serious mechanical problem when the furling system broke on the mainsail. Three of Sir Richard Branson’s watersports team heard the call for help from Ainslie and immediately set out to help. Writing on his blog, Sir Richard explained:“The only way to avoid going on to the reefs was for Marco to go to the top to cut the sail to pieces, whilst George and Ben were winching Marco up and down and Georgie was helping in the boat. Unsurprisingly, Ben kept an amazingly cool
head whilst directing operations - he just needed more hands to sort out the mess.” Sir Richard subsequently offered Sir Ben and Georgie a few nights stay on the beautiful island. In 2013 Sir Ben, four-time Olympic gold medalist, helped navigate Larry Ellison’s OracleTeam USA to victory in the America’s Cup, and he went on to launch Ben Ainslie Racing in June last year in a bid to bring the cup back to Britain. The picture below shows the BAR headquarters under construction in Old Portsmouth. There are regular drop-in sessions to update people on the progress of the work. The next will be on Thursday 12 February at The Royal Naval and Royal Albert Yacht Club from 6 - 7pm. Sir Keith Mills will be attending to give an insight into, and explain opportunities for Portsmouth with the America’s Cup World Series coming to the city in both 2015 and 2016.
January 27, 2015. Dongfeng Race Team arrives to Sanya in first position, after 23 days of sailing
CHARLES Caudrelier’s (FRA) Dongfeng Race Team claimed a key landmark in the 41-year history of the Volvo Ocean Race in January when they emphatically won Leg 3 in their home port of Sanya to take the overall lead with six stages to go. Despite two previous entries no Chinese team has won a leg in the race before. “It’s the most stressful leg I’ve ever done in my life,”

said a relieved Caudrelier, minutes after crossing the line. “But the result is fantastic!” After finishing narrow runners-up to Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (Ian Walker/GBR) and Team Brunel (Bouwe Bekking/NED) respectively in Legs 1 and 2, Dongfeng took a firm grip of the 4,670-nautical mile stage from Abu Dhabi to China virtually from the start on January 3. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (Ian Walker/GBR) clinched second place in Leg 3 and are right on Dongfeng’s shoulders, one behind on five points with six legs to race. They hit the headlines when their Volvo Ocean 65 was grounded on a reef in the Indian Ocean during Leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race back in November, but Team Vestas Wind have announced plans to return to the race. Although the crew of nine escaped serious injury, the boat was badly damaged. It was retrieved from the reef just before Christmas and is being assessed in Malaysia by experts. It will then be transported by Race partners Maersk Line to Italy and then taken to Persico in Bergamo for repairing. Skipper Chris Nicholson (AUS) says, “We got the boat off the reef in better condition than we thought possible. There are large portions of the deck that can be reused – 70 to 80 per cent – and a lot of other components within the structure. We’ll rebuild our boat just as we rebuild our hopes and dreams.” The aim is to return the boat to the now six-strong fleet in Lisbon ready for the Leg 8 start on June 7. The next leg kicks off on February 8 and involves a 5,264nm journey to Auckland.

NEWS IN BRIEF KING & QUEEN
The King & Queen is located in the heart of the yachting world in Hamble’s cobbled High Street. It is open all hours (subject to licensing law) for friendly service, real ales and a range of good homemade food and is now officially the world’s favourite yachting bar.
SHIPS COMMEMORATED National Historic Ships UK is commemorating Britain’s surviving ships from the First World War with the launch of a dedicated website and is also launching an appeal to the public to come forward with any further information they may have on these incredible vessels. www. ww1britainssurvivingvessels. org.uk
WEYMOUTH Harbour has frozen its fees for the second consecutive year to remain one of the south coast’s cheapest places to berth as well as offering fantastic, modern facilities. Cllr Kate Wheller, Chairman of the Harbour Management Board, explains, “Whilst 2015 may bring some changes for
Weymouth Harbour post Condor Ferries’ operations, the commitment to providing customers with great value means that we are keeping our prices competitive. This is great news for our existing leisure customers, but also for anyone considering berthing in Weymouth as there are berths
available; just call or pop in and speak to a member of our friendly harbour team in the Harbour Office on Custom House Quay.” The harbour provides a very flexible package for berth holders who benefit from no annual tie-ins, easy payment options, free use of the grid and slipway

NEW CLIPPER HQ
Now with seven offices in the UK, Clipper Marine has chosen Swanwick Marina on the Hamble as the base for its new headquarters. Director Matt Attree says, “We’ve been selling boats successfully for several years from our Swanwick Marina office and growing fast. We had the opportunity to move into a larger, more prominent position in the marina, so it was a natural choice.”
INDUSTRY GROWTH
The UK leisure marine industry is still growing despite problems in the Eurozone, according to statistics published by the British Marine Federation at the CWM FX London Boat Show. For the third consecutive year, the industry posted growth in 2013/14, with total revenue in the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry totalling £2.93bn (a 1% increase on 2012/13).

Record breaker to mast breaker HUGO BOSS had been sailing from strength to strength and in the early hours of January 12th crossed the line of the equator, another milestone in the race. HUGO BOSS crossed the line 11 days 13 hours and 50 min after the start gun was fired in Barcelona. The improvements the technical team made to HUGO BOSS had seen her performing better in all weather conditions, which meant HUGO BOSS crossed the equator 24 hours faster than she did in the last edition of the world race (then named Virbac Paprec 3). Unfortunately, though, after their record breaking start, Alex Thomson and Pepe Ribes, skippers of yacht HUGO
BOSS, are no longer competing in the Barcelona World Race after losing their mast. The yacht was reaching in moderate conditions when there was a rigging failure and the mast fell overboard and broke. Stewart Hosford, Managing Director of Alex Thomson Racing, said, “After such a promising start to the 2014-2015 edition of the Barcelona World Race this has come as a great shock. We have been preparing for this race for over a year, but unfortunately in offshore racing this type of failure sometimes happens. I now just want the skippers to get to safety and to recognise that they, and the team, are very upset that this has happened, and to thank our
A DECADE TO BE PROUD OF
IT’S now ten years since the launch of the RS Elite Class, and it continues to grow with new fleets and plenty of events planned this year to celebrate a successful first decade. It all began at Hayling Island SC where, fittingly, a major surge is underway as new owners including an Olympic Gold medallist and multiple world and national champions join the fleet, creating what will surely be the most competitive Elite fleet so far. It isn’t just in the UK that popularity is growing with many new and existing fleets around the world. In fact, the first RS Elite has been delivered to Sydney, Australia to drive forward development of a new fleet down-under by a group of sailors looking for exciting keelboat racing. Celebrations this year will focus on the Solent where The Royal Lymington Yacht Club will play host to the 2015 UK Nationals and the packed programme includes several tenth anniversary highlights, afloat and ashore. Cowes Week follows, where a record RS Elite fleet is expected and the first four days will form the Southern Area Championships, rounded off by the Class’s Anniversary Gala Dinner and prize giving.
team and our partners for their support. Alex and Pepe were doing a superb job in this race and having spoken to both of them – they are devastated that this rig failure has ended their race.” Now on land, Alex, Pepe and the team will turn their focus on to the rest of this year’s schedule, repairing the boat, finishing the build of and launching the new HUGO BOSS, which will compete in the Transat Jacques Vabre and B2B race later this year. Swiss Bernard Stamm and Frenchman Jean Le Cam, sailing on board an IMOCA 60 bearing the Cheminées Poujoulat colours, are leading the race as we go to press. twitter.com/alexthomson99
An appeal has been launched by Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners to raise funds for the restoration of the Grade II listed Pier, which needs 54 piles to be replaced by 2018 at a cost of £600,000. Built 140 years ago, the pier is reputed to be the longest all wooden pier in the UK. The piles have been eaten away by shipworm and gribble, but its listing means there are strict rules on its use and maintenance. The timber used for the piles is ‘Greenheart’, which is one of the hardest woods available and can only be sourced from Guyana. The Commissioners have applied for a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to help with the cost of the repairs, but may not be successful, and will not gain 100% funding. Therefore they are planning a number of events during the next two years to raise awareness about the pier as part of the appeal. Alan Titchmarsh has once again agreed to be the Patron for the Appeal and explains more, “I’m delighted to have been asked by Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners to be Patron of the Pier Appeal once again. We aim to raise £50,000 towards the refurbishment of this unique Grade II listed structure which has been a landmark at the western end of the Solent for 140 years and cherished by sailors and local residents alike.” Donations should be made payable to Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners. www.yarmouth-harbour.co.uk

Here are the comments from two of the exhibitors, but we’d like to hear what you thought too. “The CWM FX London Boat Show has yet again exceeded our expectations. We used the show as a UK launch platform for a number of our new products and received particularly positive feedback for our new GPSMAP 7400 series, echoMAP range and Reactor autopilot. Our involvement in this year’s new Datatag Lab enabled us to showcase Garmin’s full range of wellness products as well as our key marine ranges. It was also a great achievement for Garmin’s gWind to win the Yachts and Yachting award for Equipment Innovation – overall it was a fantastic show!” Chrissy Winchcombe, Garmin

“This year’s London Boat show appeared to have more of a buzz about it compared to the last few years. Sales were at a record, with many people saying they will purchase our award-winning motors in the coming weeks. I have already signed up for next year based on the business done so far.” John Arnold, UK Sales Manager, Torqeedo Next year’s London Boat Show will take place at the Excel Centre from 8 – 17th January 2016.
THE winner of this prestigious annual award must possess outstanding skills and knowledge as a skipper and will have demonstrated their expertise and experience during their exam. The latest winner, revealed at the CWM FX London Boat Show, is an outstanding young sailor called George Gillingham, who has been awarded the RYA Yachtmaster™ of the Year 2014 for his exceptional demonstration of sailing skills, having successfully passed his RYA Yachtmaster™ certificate of competence exam just a few weeks after his 18th birthday. ‘FREE’DOM BERTHING IN EUROPE MDL Marinas now has over 90 marinas in its cruising network after an additional 20 were added last year giving MDL berth holders access to even more locations offering complimentary berthing across France, Spain, Italy and the UK. Chris Brown, a berth holder at MDL’s Woolverstone Marina, says, “Freedom Berthing is a very good package from MDL Marinas that we have enjoyed making use of. We spent three months travelling around France using Passeport Escales and, unlike other marina operator packages, we had the advantage of not having to double up on costs. With no additional visitor berthing fees to pay at those marinas included in Freedom Berthing on top of our annual fee, this was a huge benefit to us.” Freedom Berthing offers a number of benefits to sailors including fuel at cost, a boatyard discount and unlimited WiFi. Customers will also have access to the MyMDL online portal allowing them to see their benefits and in some cases redeem them online. For example, using the Berth Swap scheme customers can exchange their berth directly with a Freedom Berthing member in another MDL marina. In further news, the MDL Consultancy team has been appointed by Granton Central Developments Limited to develop plans for Edinburgh Marina – a new 400 berth marina, residential, retail and spa hotel development that will be the focal point of the area’s regeneration – located just 2.5 miles from Edinburgh City Centre.

A new public international resource where details can be submitted and recorded about missing seafarers and fishermen globally is now live. The ‘Missing Seafarers Register,’ as part of the ‘Missing Seafarers Reporting Programme’, has been launched by Human Rights at Sea. It is accessible through multiple websites including: www.missingseafarers.org, www.missingmariners. org, www.missingseamen.org, as well as the HRAS home page www.humanrightsatsea.org. The platform aims to build an accurate international database of the status of seafarers and fishermen missing at sea on a global basis. It will eventually become a multilingual database where cases of missing mariners and fishermen can be registered and tracked, with the ability for people with key information to post and update details through a moderated and securely encripted platform.
KNOX LIFTS TROPHY AGAIN
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, winner of the 2014 boats.com YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award, with Ian Atkins, CEO of boat.com, and Bob Fisher, Chairman of the Yachting Journalists’ Association
SEVENTY-five-year-old Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has been named British yachtsman of the year by the Yachting Journalists’ Association. At the age of 75, Sir Robin’s achievements last year culminated in an amazing third in class finish in the renowned Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race. It is the fourth time the Portsmouth based sailor has been crowned Yachtsman of the Year – the first dates back to 1969, when he famously became the first person to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation. The award was presented by Ian Atkins, president of boats.com and Bob Fisher, Chairman of the YJA, at a ceremony at Trinity House in London. Sir Robin’s outstanding sailing exploits impressed the country’s foremost sailing journalists, as members of the YJA voted him the eventual winner from a closely contested shortlist that included ISAF sailing world champion Giles Scott from Weymouth and Hamble based solo transatlantic sailor Miranda Merron.
Accepting his award, Sir Robin said: “At last I’ve caught up with Sir Ben Ainslie having now won my fourth award. The other two nominees have performed fantastically and both deserved to win so I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.” Windsurfer Emma Wilson from Dorset, the current Youth World champion, was named the boats.com YJA Young Sailor of the Year. She topped a strong shortlist that included under-16 Topper Sailing World Champion Calum Rosie from Helensburgh, Scotland and national Honda RYA Youth RIB Champion Kamila Czartolomna from Wolverhampton. Emma’s string of World and European windsurfing title wins last year convinced YJA members that she was a worthy winner. As well as the two main awards, there was also a special Lifetime Achievement Award for Iain Percy, OBE, which recognised his contribution to the enormously successful Bart’s Bash charity initiative to raise funds for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

True Identity
THefT of boats and equipment has become a major multi-million pound headache in the UK, causing misery and financial loss to thousands of boaters. now the british Marine federation has partnered with datatag Id to create a new security initiative called COMPASS. The COMPASS scheme will use a raft of sophisticated and almost impossible to combat identification methods to ensure that a boat or outboard’s true identity can be determined quickly and easily either by Police or prospective owners. Suzuki has become the first outboard manufacturer to support the scheme. They have been exclusively offering the datatag security tagging system as a theft deterrent on its 25hp – 300hp models since September 2014.

The Boat Improvement Bible (Adlard Coles Nautical £29.99)
Boat owners are often inveterate fiddlers according to a new book packed with nearly 90 practical ideas. Whether you are an accomplished home DIY achiever or a bodger this could be a godsend for those who want to make their boats more comfortable, more efficient or simply a bit more modern. It includes ideas for fitting a fridge to chill your beer or installing a heater to help you extend the boating season. It considers solar panels and how to set up lazy jacks to help your sailing season. Home comforts include plans for pressurised water, a shower and a freezer as well as simple ideas such as mug holders, extra fiddles and handholds. Navigation systems are also included among schemes that could help upgrade both sail and motor boats. solar energy
Solar energy solar panels are becoming cheaper as world production increases. even the smallest panel will make a contribution to your energy independence, but positioning them effectively may need some imagination. Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, are now seen everywhere, from calculators to household rooftops. Most people are familiar with how they work – daylight falling onto a grid of encapsulated silicon semi-conductors excites electrons, which then move as a direct electric current (DC). On boats, this current is harvested and stored in deep-cycle batteries. A well-made solar panel will give up to 25 years of ‘free’ energy and require almost no maintenance apart from the occasional wipe down and a visual check. The marine
versions are usually ruggedly made from corrosion-resistant materials, and can often be manually tilted towards the sun. Solar panels are available in several distinct types: rigid, rigid but semi-flexible and flexible. Many long-range yachts will have a combination of the two, allowing the charging to be boosted on good solar days. Flexible panels can also be permanently mounted onto a curved surface, such as a hatch housing or cabin roof. Others are kept loose with a long cable so that they can be readily moved around the deck to catch the most direct sunlight.

tyPes of solar Panel all solar panels are currently made from two thin layers of silicon constructed as a sandwich. The silicon was initially supplied as a by-product of the electronics industry, and prices continue to fall as new production techniques are discovered.
Wiring in a solar panel or several linked panels (an array) is very straightforward, and with the current flow managed into multiple batteries by an inexpensive regulator, some yachts find they need little else to power all their domestic needs. For blue water yachts, however, the solar panels are usually part of a suite of recharging options that can supply power around the clock.
Below Two large monocrystalline solar panels on an articulated frame. An array of 200 watts can usually supply most of the domestic requirements of an average yacht – when the sun shines.

Polycrystalline silicon (rigid but semiflexible): almost as efficient, and a bit

has risen to around 20 per cent from an average of 6 per cent.
The power demand for each device is expressed in watts, a measure of energy calculated by multiplying the voltage (volts) available by the current (amps) being drained. This is then divided by the number of hours each day it is likely to be used. For example:
There is a big difference between when the yacht is at sea, and when it is at anchor. The battery bank should be capable of supplying that demand without being drained by more than 50 per cent of its total rated capacity, and also have a recharging system capable of replacing more than that in average conditions. If the panels can virtually match that drain, then the batteries will be shallow-cycled, and so will last a lot longer. Finally, you can now decide how much you want to replenish from renewable sources. Most long-range cruising yachts have a combination of charging systems – perhaps large wind generators for use in the northern hemisphere and solar panels in tropical waters, using wind generators as a supplement.
Calculating energy demands You will need to find out how much power each ‘off grid’ electrical device will consume when working (or in standby mode) and for how long that current will be needed. This demand will change according to how the boat is being used, so a helpful benchmark is the maximum draw your boat will need at any one time.
OCEAN SAFETY
Ocean Safety has once again been named Official Safety Supplier of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race which starts next August.
Above Some owners dedicate a single solar panel to maintain the battery of one high draw item, such as a fridge or windlass.
❂ A boat has a 12-volt battery supply, and runs a fridge that draws 4 amps. The fridge will cycle on and off as the thermostat kicks in, and runs for an average of 10 hours in every 24. ❂ Our calculation would be: 4 (amps) x 12 (volts) x 10 (hours) = 480 watt hours. ❂ To convert this into amp hours (Ah) to help us calculate the size of battery needed for the fridge alone, we divide the watt hours by the voltage; 480/12 = 40Ah. Left uncharged, the battery will drain in one hour.

development. Protesters say the view from the high cliff above the marina, which will be spoiled, is only one of two in Britain specifically protected by statute. The protesters add that these were the kind of concerns that, when completed, the development will tarnish the setting of the nearby Regency jewel of Kemptown. These were precisely the types of concerns that led to 1968’s Brighton Marina Act, which was designed to ensure further buildings were positioned under the cliff. However, the developers found a loophole allowing the height restriction to be waived.
Even worse, the steam dissolves-out flammable, acidic tars that will cling to and block up, as well as inevitably damage, the stove and its chimney. Damaged stove installations are more likely to leak combustion gases into the cabin space, and because of incomplete combustion as the fuel is damp, those gases are more likely to contain carbon monoxide (CO) – giving the vicious cycle that could see a highly toxic atmosphere in the boat. Stove flues lined with tar could also lead to a chimney fire. Wood that burns easily and cleanly with good heat will feel dry and have a hollow sound when tapped. The bark will either have fallen off, or will fall away easily and good wood often has cracks in the end where it has dried out. www.boatsafetyscheme.org
NEW DRY STACK
Premier’s Swanwick Marina in Hamble is introducing a new dry stack service for boats up to 11m; providing boat owners with a flexible and cost effective alternative to keeping their boats in the water. Premier is expecting the dry stack to be extremely popular amongst RIB and sports boat owners and fishermen as a convenient alternative to towing, launching and recovery.
CLASSES AT COWES
Cowes Classics Week has an eligibility policy with a rolling 50 year design date, and three new classes have become eligible in 2015: Tempest, Soling and Contessa 26. Other new classes for this year include Star, Royal Burnham One Design and Cruisers (non-Spinnaker).
CLASSY YACHTS
The J Class Association has confirmed that at least three J Class yachts, Lionheart, Ranger and Velsheda, will compete at the RYS Bicentenary International Regatta taking place from 27 - 31 July in the Solent.

BOATERS using damp wood and logs in their stoves could be risking a triple whammy including increased costs, stove damage and carbon monoxide poisoning says the Boat Safety Scheme. It is crucial that wood fuel is kept in a dry, well-ventilated area. If not, the damp fuel will cause the stove to run at a lower temperature as the heat of the fire will be producing steam and so the stove needs much more fuel to keep the boat warm.
CROWDS gathered near Brighton Pier to protest about a planning decision made by their Green Party led council. A 40-storey tower has been approved by Brighton and Hove Council for the marina. In addition to the ‘Roaring Forties’ tower a further ten buildings ranging from six to thirteen storeys were also given planning permission despite an Act of Parliament designed to protect the area. All this is happening under the UK’s only Green run council. However, although £16 million of construction work has already been completed, the development remains in doubt due to a court case soon to be heard before three law lords, which could stop the £250 million

BRITISH SAILING TEAM UP-DATE
PARALYMPIC SAILING ENDING AFTER 2016
ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2015
A GOLDEN HAT TRICK IN MIAMI
MIAMI’S Biscayne Bay hosted the first ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta over the final six days of January with a strong contingent of 64 British sailors battling it out across thirteen Olympic and Paralympic events. They were among 800 sailors from 63 nations all turning their focus towards Olympic and Paralympic qualification for Rio 2016. Twelve months ago the British team claimed five titles, but was 2015 to be as successful? World and European Champion Giles Scott was the man to beat in the heavyweight Finn class with his winning run stretching to fifteen months and seven world-ranked regattas. In Miami, Giles extended his dominance in the heavyweight dinghy class to defend his 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami crown. Windsurfer Bryony Shaw, who kicked off her season with Miami World Cup gold last year, was also hoping her current golden streak would continue. The 31-year-old has won three regattas over the past three months – the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi, the Copa Brasil de Vela on the Rio 2016 waters in December and the RS:X Midwinter Championships. The Weymouth sailor was delighted to also claim gold in Miami with an impressive all-round performance in some tricky conditions at this seasonopening event.
Luke Patience and Elliot Willis ensured their first ISAF Sailing World Cup medal as a team was a golden one on 31st January, boosting the British Sailing Team’s final medal tally to three gold and five silver medals. Laser sailor Nick Thompson, Ben SaxtonNicola Groves in the Nacra 17 and Hannah Mills-Saskia Clark in the 470 Women’s event claimed final day silvers along with Megan Pascoe and Alexandra Rickham-Niki Birrell’s silvers from the Paralympic classes. “Miami typically provides some great winter racing, and there’s a strong entry across the classes this year as nations start to increase their focus on which sailors might represent them at the Rio Games next year,” explained RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park. “It’s been a tricky week with a full range of conditions for the sailors to contend with,” Stephen added. “There have been some unusual offshore winds, and very shifty too resulting in some significant place changes throughout all the fleets all week. The good news from a British team perspective is that we had people fighting it out not just for medals, but for golds in the majority of classes during the course of the week, and to come away with eight medals at this stage is a good place to be.” Twitter @BritishSailing www.britishsailingteam.com Bryony Shaw, RSX © Richard Langdon

The 2012 Paralympic sailing team
IN shock news, the International Paralympic Committee has announced that sailing is being removed from the sporting programme for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. According to The International Paralympic Committee (IPC): “All (sports) were assessed against the same criteria and our aim all along has been to ensure that the final Tokyo 2020 Paralympic sports programme is fresh and features the best para-sports possible. “The Board’s final decision was not an easy one and, after much debate, we decided not to include two sports – football 7-a-side and sailing – in the Tokyo 2020 programme. Both did not fulfil the IPC Handbook’s minimum criteria for worldwide reach.” The RYA responded said: “This is hugely disappointing news for the sport of disabled sailing worldwide, for British Sailing Team athletes who are already working hard towards Tokyo, and is a loss
to the Paralympic Games itself as sailing provides a unique element to the sporting programme.” The RYA plans to talk to the ISAF Disabled Sailing Committee to find out how they can support them if there is any further recourse to be had. It is understood that at present there are only 22 out of a maximum possible 23 sports on the programme for Tokyo 2020. Duncan Souster, CEO of the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a charity which promotes the integration of people of all physical abilities through sailing adventures, said: “We are hugely disappointed with this decision from the International Paralympic Committee. “Sailing offers a life-changing outlet for people with a wide range of disabilities, inspiring them to lead more independent lives. “Since Great Britain won the first Paralympic Sailing gold medal in 1996, the Games has been a standard bearer for the promotion of sailing among disabled people.“
“Sailing is more than an Olympic sport, it demonstrates that disabled people can take on the kinds of challenges that would inspire anyone. To cull it from the Games is pouring a cold bucket of water on that inspiration.” “The decision undermines the hard work of many organisations and charities like the Jubilee Sailing Trust that work to provide life-enhancing adventures for disabled people through sailing. I am sure that the leaders of the International Sailing Federation will be doing everything they can to appeal this decision and we will do all we can to support them.” In the meantime, the RYA will continue to give its full support to the British Paralympic team as it works towards Rio 2016.

‘Sea’sonal Inspiration Henri Lloyd’s new Spring Summer collection for women draws it inspiration directly from sailing and the sea combining traditional looks with contemporary touches. Stripes, of course, are still a common theme, but they are mixed with tech-inspired seasonal branding. An old favourite, the hardest part is deciding which to go for! www.henrilloyd.com
Winter Warmers If you want to stay warm while out and about this winter, keeping your head covered is essential. Here we have gorgeous winter warmers from Cotswold Outdoor: Barts Fur Earmuffs (£19.99) and North Face Cable Minna Beanie (£25). One Pot Does The Lot
Why buy many products when just one will do? Vistal is a new cleaner that claims to be both quick and effective, leaving boat surfaces clean and protected. It can be used on a whole range of surfaces and is especially good for fibreglass, but can also be used on stainless steel, glass, plastic, fenders and inflatables. Vistal, which comes with its own special sponge, is applied by hand to dissolve away dirt. What makes it unique is that the cleaner comes as a solid compound. To activate the cleaner a dampened sponge is wiped across the surface and then gently rubbed on the surface. As the surface is cleaned, a coating of natural glycerine is left to polish and protect it and repel water. Vistal is biodegradeable, free of toxins, acids and phosphates and is kind to the skin. Three tub sizes are available priced at £18.95 for 500g, £22.95 for 800g and £64.95 for a 4kg bucket. www.vistal.co.uk
Icom’s best-selling entry-level radio, the ICM323 is to be joined by an extra version, the IC-M323G, which includes an integral GPS Receiver and allows your current position and time to be used for DSC calls. The IC-M323G also has all the features that made the original so popular, including Icom’s user interface including intuitive ‘soft-keys’ allowing faster access to radio functions. The IC-M323G will be available from Icom stockists at the start of the season. Pricing is yet to be confirmed.
eChart service launched
A new electronic charting app for boat and yacht owners, which accurately provides geo-referenced electronic navigational charts for use in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, was launched at the CWM FX London Boat Show. The Meridian eChart Service is an Admirality Raster Charts Service (ARCS) accredited web or PC based app. It effectively gives boat and yacht owners a more detailed, nautical version of Google maps. Chart data is supplied in chart packs, which can be downloaded from www.meridian-chartware.co.uk or the data can be supplied on CD or USB memory stick. The eChart software service costs from £95 inc. VAT, with an annual update from £75 inc. VAT/year, including Marine GIS and free Chart Plotter.
U-Boot Swordfish II
This isn’t your average piece of boating kit, but we couldn’t resist including it as it’s great fun – for big kids and little kids. The Swordfish II is a remote control submarine that will really dive and even has an LED light. Don’t get too excited though; it’s only 14cm long. Having said that it is a lot of fun, and the youngest member of the household has been reluctant to return it after the thorough testing it was put through in the bath. The good news is that it’s very simple to charge and use. It didn’t take long to work out all the basic functions and everyone agreed it was very entertaining to use. The only downside is the £24.99 price tag, but then remote control toys are often costly. Revell Control models are available from www.amazon.co.uk and all good toy and model retailers. POWER
Business woman and British Power Boat Champion Shelley Jory-Leigh, from Hampshire, is one of the UK’s leading powerboat racers and the top female in the world. In her spare time she runs a bridal business.
SHELLEY JORY-LEIGH
Phil Pope has won numerous championships during his twenty year career. Supplied by P1 AquaX
With the 2015 season fast approaching Shelley caught up with 2014 RYA British P1 AquaX 300 Champion to discuss the forthcoming season.
IN a career spanning over 20 years Phil Pope has already added fifteen British, four European and one World Championship title to his list of accolades. 2014 saw him clinch the P1 AquaX 300 title securing four out of five Grand Prix wins in the championship. 2014 was the first year Phil competed in the P1 AquaX series. Already an established champion on closed water circuits and looking to enter into more endurance races in the ever changing conditions of the sea, Phil and his team and sponsors entered the 2014 championship aiming to make waves and through their hard work managed to secure the first AquaX win for Yamaha in the series’ history. SET TO GO 2015 will once again see Phil compete for the P1 AquaX 300 Championship Title on his Yamaha FX, hoping to give sponsors Yamaha Motors and Jet Porda Germany another championship title. He will also compete in the IJSBA European and World Championships on CMJ (Custom Made Jetski) Yamaha FZR as well as the prestigious Kings Cup Competition in Thailand.
Pope Powering Up for P1 AquaX With the forthcoming season impending I asked Phil what he would say to anyone thinking about giving P1 AquaX a go. Phil explained, “Anyone with a ski sat in the garage should come out and try it! There are classes to suit just about any ski and level of rider. So if you’re contemplating it then 2015 is your chance to come and be part of an amazing racing experience.” YOUR OWN SKI? Phil Pope Racing has developed two P1 AquaX 300 edition skis ready to race in the 2015 Championship. The skis have been developed for sale specifically with the AquaX Circuit in mind. The first is based on the Yamaha Fx and the second based on the Kawasaki 310r ski.
To find out more about Phil Pope, his new skis and his racing or how to get involved in P1 AquaX check out these two websites www.philpoperacing.com or www.p1aquax.co.uk
Both will be built ready to race using Phil’s choice of handling kit, steering system set up, full decal kits, seat covers and mats. Exactly the same as the set up that Phil himself will be competing on in 2015. “I’ve got years of experience in racing and setting up my own skis and I saw an opportunity to help other people who may want to get involved in AquaX. Some people looking to race and be competitive from the onset don’t necessarily have the experience or knowledge to get the best out of their ski. So I decided that I could impart my experience into these two skis which will hopefully give people the best opportunity to get out on the water and succeed.” CHAMPIONSHIP TIPS So once they’ve got the ski and want to give it a go I asked the fifteen times British Champion what his top three tips would be for anyone looking to become a champion and here they are: 1. Get out on the water have some fun and learn how your ski handles and how to get the best out of it. 2. Train hard! Racing isn’t just about time on the ski, although you need as much time as possible out on the water. It’s also about training in the gym to increase your levels of fitness. Endurance racing like AquaX takes a high level of fitness and stamina as you never know what the conditions will be like. 3. Invest in your ski and set up (like one from PPRacing). A good Ski can make all the difference. Like you, your ski needs to be able to go the distance throughout the race.

GLIDING TO THE TOP FROM Glider Yachts, a new British luxury yacht manufacturer, comes the 60ft Glider Super Sports 18 (SS18), which they describe as the most revolutionary high performance sports boat available in the world today. The Glider SS18 has been six years in the making, with meticulous planning, design and engineering using expertise from Formula 1 and the aerospace industry. Hand-built by craftsmen, the SS18 offers a spacious cabin featuring beautiful leather sports seating with carbon fibre, brushed aluminium and elegant upholstery throughout. Robert McCall, Chief Designer and Managing Director of Glider Yachts, commented: “We’ve been asked what’s so special about Gliders and anyone who has travelled at over 30mph in anything other than flat calm will know it’s an uncomfortable experience. Gliders’ unique hull form, propulsion and Stability Control System (SCS) actually tune to the sea conditions allowing passengers to ‘glide’ over the waves in unprecedented comfort at up to 70mph. They will be built in the UK by Burgess Marine with prices starting from £475,000. www.glideryachts.com
MERCRUISER 4.5L The MerCruiser 4.5L sterndive engine, launched at the London Boat Show, sets new standards for acceleration and overall performance, thanks to design innovations such as a long runner scrolled intake manifold and high displacement, which produces an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. The V6 engine weighs 59kg less than a 5.0L, V8 small block, yet provides similar performance. The engine’s newly designed rear-facing throttle body, anti-whistle throttle plate, engine cover and mounts, lightweight flywheel, fuel supply module and structural oil pan all work together to deliver superior idle and smoothness as well as low noise and vibration for a better boating experience. Ease of maintenance was taken into account when designing the MerCruiser 4.5L, eliminating the need for the traditional 20-hour

Sailing then and now
The Bouquet of Boating Our love of wonderfully smooth woodwork on boats is something that goes back thousands of years, but thanks to massive technological advances the varnish in use today is very different to that used by early civilisations.
We all know that wonderful sensation of being afloat, but boating can equally serve some of the other senses too. If there is one smell above all others that says ‘boats’ then it has to be the heady aroma of fresh varnish. Any brightwork on a boat provides us with a tactile pleasure too; we may love the low maintenance aspect of our GRP boats, but on a sunny afternoon, few can resist the temptation to run their hand along the warm silky finish on a well varnished piece of wood. ODOROUS RESIN The technique of protecting woodwork afloat with a coat of varnish is as old as the first proper boats found out in the Mediterranean. We know for certain that many of the early civilisations, going back as far as ancient egypt, had mastered the art of vanish work. Indeed, the very name ‘varnish’ comes from the Latin term vernix, meaning ‘odorous resin’. The early versions of varnish were made by mixing a natural resin (often from a pine tree) with a solvent. Before the solvent could evaporate some of the varnish would soak into the top layer of wood. The result was that once fully dry, the wood was not only protected from the weather and water, but had taken on that golden hue that we still find attractive to this day. Varnish work on boats placed additional demands on the earliest The new breed of two pot varnishes give wonderful results but need careful handling and close control of the operating environment. ‘chemists’ and painters, for the construction of boats and rigs back then saw a great deal of flexibility in the woodwork. If it was not to crack and allow the ingress of water, varnish had to be flexible too, with this property rated far more highly than the ‘gloss’ finishes. Cracking was not the only problem with these early coverings, as without any protection against UV damage, simply being out in the open could lead to a rapid degradation of the varnish’s protection qualities. VARNISH REVOLUTION Like so many other paints and coverings, varnish would undergo something of a revolution as more modern industrial techniques developed during the Victorian era, when the production of greatly improved products began. Although a huge leap forward from the earlier finishes, this was still a traditional varnish, based on tung oil, with its wonderfully evocative smell, redolent of boatyards in the spring. However, the huge advances in all technologies that had been driven by wartime needs would also see rapid enhancement to the properties of varnish. By the mid 1950s the chemists had perfected the use of phenolic resins that would give far greater gloss retention, and less than a decade later International Paints had developed an entirely new

allows for a hard outer surface that has the benefit of a two-pot poly varnish to be applied over the top of a more flexible underlayer. This helps address the fundamental issue with the harder finishes, in that there can be variation in the adhesion of the varnish to the woodwork being covered.
No wonder we love varnished brightwork. It is not just the look, it is the very bouquet of boating. approach to varnish with the launch of a Urethane Alkyd finish that would quickly become known as ‘One Pot Polyurethane’. Such was the pace of development at the time that the range of varnishes offered by International Paints would soon be expanded to include a superb, high technology based two-pot polyurethane. TIME FOR TWO Hard wearing, UV resistant and with a tough, glass like finish, the two-pot polyurethane products offered the marine community a whole new world of applications, but at the same time set out new demands on the user. was that hugely satisfying and enjoyable sensation of slowly brushing on the liquid gold of what used to be known as ‘spar varnish’. The new two part products could be highly toxic and required careful mixing and handling, with varnishing needing to take place in a well-ventilated workspace. Close attention also had to be paid to the temperature and humidity control, but the quality of the results that could be achieved made all the effort worthwhile. The technical people at International Paints (now part of the Akzo-Nobel Group) have also developed their Awlgrip ‘Ultimate Brightwork System’, which
FLEXIBILITY ESSENTIAL Without the flexible undercoating, any flexing in the wood can result in the varnish cracking, which then allows moisture in underneath the covering layer, where it is trapped, ultimately discolouring the wood. Taking things a stage further, their new ‘Awlwood MA’ system, comprising a Primer and Clear Finish, offers even better bonding of the base coat to the wood. Once the clear top layer is applied to the primer, the result is a finish that remains highly flexible, whilst retaining the desired toughness and resistance to abrasion. Be it the traditionalist, happily brushing on a conventional varnish in the sunshine, or the protective suited and masked technician applying one of the new breed of finishes in almost operating theatre like conditions, it matters not. The result in each case will be that wonderfully smooth woodwork, with the deep lustrous gloss that looks like it is still wet. No wonder we love varnished brightwork. It is not just the look, it is the very bouquet of boating.

WITH SHAUN PASCOE, TURN TO STARBOARD CEO
We chat to Shaun Pascoe, Squadron Leader (Rtd), MSc (Distinction) Leadership and Management, who is CEO of Turn to Starboard, a registered charity that uses RYA sailing courses to support Armed Forces personnel who have been affected by military operations. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.
I joined the RAF eighteen years ago and finished Service in April 2014. I had operational tours in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and then repeatedly to Afghanistan. I was in charge of the medical teams that extract injured personnel from point of wounding using the Chinook helicopter.
WHAT IS TURN TO STARBOARD?
We are a group of volunteers (pretty large group now) who sail with those affected by military operations or the unique nature of Service Life. We do this through various strands of activity including Day Skipper courses and family weeks, and we facilitate programmes for individuals who have fallen on particularly hard times to undertake Yachtmaster and Cruising Instructor.
We help them readjust and re-engage through one-to-one support and the opportunity to share time and the experience with others who have faced similar challenges.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO SET UP THE CHARITY?
After my second tour of Afghanistan (or maybe my third!) I started to feel the pinch. As non-formed unit personnel (I leave and come back alone) it can be a little isolating and it’s difficult to share experiences even with your loved ones. To do something about that I completed my Yachtmaster with Cruising Instructor and started to take these individuals out. It was meant to be quite low key, but organisations started seeing the positive benefits of what we do and some exciting things began to happen.
WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHS SO FAR WITH TURN TO STARBOARD? I guess the high at the moment is the massive momentum in such a short

time. The Prince’s Trust have gifted us their 92ft Schooner Spirit of Fairbridge now called Spirit of Falmouth; she is an amazing flagship and can accommodate fourteen beneficiaries and four crew. The Royal Air Force Association, Help for Heroes and the superyacht charter company Y.CO have all offered significant levels of support. One guy we sailed with hadn’t been out of his house for a few years, and he now engages with life and regularly sails. Aaron, who is ten, said, “My daddy came back from Afghanistan but when we went sailing he really came back.” I don’t have a low!
BBMS
WHAT’S COMING UP IN 2015?
We’ve scheduled a Round Britain adventure for fourteen WIS (Wounded Injured and Sick) in 2015 and because of the huge level of support we can now focus on our aspiration to build two Rustler 42s for our beneficiaries. Rustler have kick started our campaign by donating a hull to start off the boat build project.
WHAT KIND OF SAILING DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?
Teaching others. Most people we sail see sailing as something that is a bit beyond their reach. To give them that opportunity and impart some skills is pretty special. If I was pushed then the family element of what we do is my favourite.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
I have to say all of them in the hope that one will step forward as a patron, but it’s got to be Ben (you know his surname!). It’s the Falmouth connection as much as his amazing achievements.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?
Whilst we are receiving an incredible amount of support and following we have to sustain this. Can you help us build our Rustler? For a few shekels we will even immortalise your name in the hull. If you can help in any way we would love to hear from you. www.turntostarboard.co.uk facebook.com/turntostarboard

Every sailor, no matter what their experience, must take safety seriously. Tom Harrop, Brand Manager at Exposure Marine, explains how technology is improving today’s safety equipment.
TECHNOLOGY has made a significant impact on safety equipment for search and rescue situations. Digital VHF radios mean DSC distress alerts will transmit the last known GPS position and MMSI yacht information. Hitting the DSC button is one of the first elements of the RYA Yachtmaster™ man overboard drill, after the MOB call has been made. The Personal Location Beacon (PLB), which works similar to an EPIRB and is carried by and registered to an individual rather than the boat, is a significant development. About the size of mobile phone, it transmits its location via GPS for 24 hours or more. Some PLBs do not float, requiring a floatation sleeve, and not all models can be automatically activated. Both DSC alerts and PLBs are critical to getting the rescue services close to the incident. However, in many emergency situations there is little time and speed of recovery is vital, especially in areas of low water temperature or injury. Finding a person in the water is extremely hard, even close by in daylight, in relatively low chop or wave conditions. The ability for a vessel to self-recover makes a huge impact on increasing the chances of survival. Developments in LED lighting technology are making yet further
advances for man overboard recovery. Exposure Marine’s water activated MOB strobe and search light can be picked up and thrown to a casualty in the water, without even being switched on. Exposure’s patented Man Over Board Technology (MOBT) is a development of Motion Control Technology, originally created to automatically adjust the power of cycle lights when travelling up or downhill. When the MOB light senses motion, such as being picked up and thrown, its sensors automatically look for a switching connection for a period of 30 seconds. Once in the water, and a connection is created, the 1300 lumens LED strobe activates itself after five seconds. Fully waterproof and buoyant, it floats at an angle illuminating a large pool of water making locating a person from a boat or from the air considerably easier. The versatile MOB light is small and very light, so can be carried comfortably as a personal safety aid, and also functions as a powerful search and spotlight. If the situation is too far to throw the MOB, it has a switch activated 1300 lumens spot light too, with a beam

Many boaters may not realise that when they see The Yacht Harbour Association’s Gold Anchor flags flying at a marina, it means that key environmental standards have been achieved. Major events, campaigns and regattas have also recognised the importance of being environmentally sustainable in that time. Sir Keith Mills’ America’s Cup Challenge ‘Race for Change’ was supported by The Carbon Trust, Powerboat P1 created its P1 Marine Foundation and in 2014 the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week designated the first Saturday of the regatta as ‘Green Blue Day’ to raise awareness of the event’s on-going commitment to sustainability. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and Sunsail have both achieved ISO20121, an international standard for sustainable event management with a helping hand from The Green Blue. You don’t have to look too far to spot sustainability high on the agenda of Ben Ainslie Racing’s America’s Cup campaign. Berth holders receive a 10% discount for parties of four or more. Food is of very good quality with the most popular dishes being the ribeye steaks and homemade burger, which changes daily. The chef, Paul Thompson, cooks local fish and steaks perfectly. Hop’s choice: the salt’n’pepper fish – usually squid, scallops & king prawns – lip smacking!

VISITORS coming to watch the America’s Cup 45’s race from their HQ in the Camber might like to consider the many nourishing delights that the Rive Gauche offers. There is a life force to Gosport that is seen in the way Alex Thomson strolls up a 30 metre mast or how Caroline Dinenage MP sends a steely look over to the opposition at Question Time; Gosport produces some fine stars and is fondly dubbed GosVegas by its rocking residents. Converts that move here have made quite a splash and contributed hugely to charity and the community - I’m thinking of Tanya Brookfield (Toe in the Water) and Endurance Swimmer Anna Wardley, with her Five Island Swim Challenge. Both are raising funds, changing lives

HIKE OR BIKE
Great cycle routes take bikers safely out to Lee on the Solent and Stokes Bay. There are some good websites to choose from, but I like Walk, Jog, Run. Take a look at: www.walkjogrun.net/cycling-routes/UK/Hampshire/Gosport/ There’s a good 12+ mile circular route taking you out to Stubbington via Lee on the Solent and back past Hardway. There are plenty of café stops at Lee, including some favourites of ours: The Penguin, The Tea Party, the Tea Room and Laneway Café for good coffee. If you get the bug and want to do a charity cycle this summer you could do worse than trying the Hampshire Harbours Route, all for the British Heart Foundation. ACCESS
By Road: The postcode for your Sat Nav is SO31 4NB. From the M3 take the M27, Eastbound for Portsmouth. Exit Junction 8 of the M27 for Southampton East/ Hamble. Follow signs for Hamble on B3397, Hamble Lane. After approximately three miles you will see a sign for Hamble Point Marina, just past the Fire Station. Turn right into Copse Lane which then becomes School Lane and Hamble Point Marina is one mile down this lane.
By Rail: There is a main line station at Southampton Central, from where a local service operates to Hamble station. From Hamble rail station a local bus service operates to Hamble village. After alighting from the bus at Hamble village, proceed along School Lane and Hamble Point Marina is approximately one mile down this lane. To access by sea, from abeam Calshot Castle head for Hamble Pt South Cardinal buoy at the mouth of the well-marked river. From here the channel is narrow between drying banks, so be sure to leave the No 2 East Cardinal beacon to port. At night two directional lights lead to Warsash Jetty on the east bank. The entrance to Hamble Point Marina is 500m further north on the west bank. It is essential to call on VHF Ch 80 or by mobile for a vacant berth. Be sure to keep clear of commercial shipping in Southampton Water.
CRUISING
The marina lies directly south to the Isle of Wight, with Cowes only a few miles away, which is perfect for a day trip to enjoy the beautiful boating town. Other popular local cruising destinations include the Beaulieu
River, Lymington and Yarmouth, which are all within easy reach. It is also a great central marina to explore MDL’s network of nearby marinas including Mercury Yacht Harbour and Ocean Village Marina in Southampton. The south of England offers many fantastic places to visit for the weekend with a number of class-leading marinas from MDL including Northney Marina and Sparkes Marina on Hayling Island, or Cobb’s Quay Marina located in beautiful Poole Harbour, the world’s second largest natural harbour. For a longer distance cruise Cherbourg, the Channel Islands and the Brittany coastline are within easy cruising distance from Hamble Point Marina and annual berth holders can enjoy Freedom Berthing – giving access to complimentary stays at over 90 marinas across the UK and Europe. Many berth holders toured northwest France last summer with no additional berthing costs. The English Channel is one of the busiest waterways in the world. However, the traffic separation schemes operate off Dover and a channel crossing from Hamble Point Marina to Normandy or Brittany is fairly straightforward.
BERTHING & STORAGE
The marina can accommodate: ■ 230 marina berths – Max LOA of 30m ■ 121 dry stack berths – Max LOA of 10m Hamble Point Marina offers purposebuilt high quality berths that offer easy access to the Solent, while the Dry Stack facility is a purpose-built rack that gives customers access to their boat 365 days a year where a highlyskilled team lift and launch your boat for you using a specialist forklift. All customers need to do is call ahead or turn up at the marina and this can be done easily at any time of the week. ■ There is boat lifting and storage ashore for over 650 boats ■ 4 ton crane for masts and engines ■ 75 ton boat hoist ■ Wide, easy access slipway
LOCATION
THE marina has a superb location on the Hamble with fast and easy access to the world famous waters of the Solent. Over the past 40 years, the marina has undergone many developments and upgrades to retain its position as one of the UK’s prime locations. These have included the installation of cuttingedge boat moving equipment, including a remote control-operated hoist and boat movers. Leading dry stack facilities have been added and the storage in the boatyard has also been significantly extended, giving the marina increased capacity to store over 650 boats on shore at any one time. Hamble Point Marina has benefitted from MDL’s recent investment programme, with a number of improvements made to the site in 2014. These included refurbishment of the toilet and washroom facilities, upgraded CCTV for the whole site, new cradle stock and refurbishment of on-site buildings and offices. MDL is committed to investing in Hamble Point Marina and its infrastructure now and in the future to ensure the marina continues to offer customers first-class berthing and marina services. For example, 2015 will see the installation of the fastest Wi-Fi on the River Hamble.
MDL is one of the UK’s leading dry stack providers and its slick system offers unlimited launching on demand seven days a week. PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS Alan Weeks is a Freedom Berthing customer at Hamble Point Marina, who uses MDL’s dry stack storage facility for his boat, Cordisque. He commented: “Hamble Point Marina is ideally located for easy access to the Solent and the dry stack storage services at the marina are very convenient. A quick phone call from me, and my boat is always in the water in less than an hour. The Freedom Berthing scheme offers even more flexibility, allowing us to berth at any other MDL marina when we go out on the water. In the past couple of months we have visited Cobb’s Quay Marina, Hythe

PARTS OF AN ANCHOR
There are several different types of anchor that might be on the boat together with the chain and warp (see picture 1). However, before choosing an anchor consider:
All AT SeA AUGUST 2012
The kind of bottom you will typically anchor in. Different anchors are better at holding in some materials than in others. Decide what kind of anchoring you plan to do; do you just want to anchor while you have a spot of lunch or are you expecting to anchor in a high current or during bad weather? How are you planning to store your anchor?
Shank – the main arm or stem of the anchor Fluke – the holding part of the anchor buried on the seabed Stock – cross-bar used to flip an anchor so the
The amount of chain and warp used must be far more than the depth of water to allow a good length of chain to lie on the seabed. This provides a horizontal pull on the anchor that makes it dig in. If too little scope is let out the boat may drag its anchor at high water. Marking the chain and warp in some way makes it easier to prepare the correct amount. •
Secure holding requires sufficient scope on the anchor warp or chain, which needs to lay along the bottom, before rising to meet the yacht at an approximate angle of 45 degrees. With chain, use four times the maximum depth and with a combination of chain and warp use six times (see picture 2). This means that it is important to allow plenty of room behind the boat when anchoring and for the swing, remembering that not all boats will turn at the same time. Yachts will lie with the tidal stream
Pull the chain up out of the anchor locker and flake it along the deck in a series of loops, which will provide sufficient scope for the depth of water. Before lowering, take a single turn of the chain around the nearest deck cleat to ensure you can hold the weight – extra turns will quickly lock the chain. Let out the chain steadily hand-overhand. Letting the chain run at full speed over the bow roller could be dangerous.
and motorboats more often to the wind. Let out enough scope for the maximum depth at high tide, using the following a minimum guide: • 4 x maximum depth for chain • 6 x maximum depth for warp & chain Heavy chain will provide greater security than warp, but puts a lot of weight into the bows and may be difficult to let go or pull up by hand. Some boaters use an electric windlass to drop and pull up their anchor, however if you don’t have an electric windlass you need to let go and pull the anchor up by hand. Heavy chain needs to be handled with extreme care. The skipper
When raising the anchor, motor slowly ahead as the crew pull in the slack on the chain. • Use the engine to counteract the tidal stream. Too fast and the boat will override the chain; too slow and it will be very heavy work to pull in the chain. The anchor will not come free until the chain is almost vertical. • As the anchor comes to the surface continue to motor slowly so the anchor does not swing and hit the bow of the boat as it breaks the surface. If there is a problem with lifting the anchor try breaking it out using the engine, having secured the chain to a cleat. When working with the anchor and chain it is important to be aware of the weight that can be involved, even when a windlass is used. For advice on using a windlass to drop and pull up your anchor read the RYA’s Yacht Sailing Techniques book by Jeremy Evans. Nogs and Noggins Make new sailing friends this year; invite them onboard ‘for a noggin’. ‘Noggin: a small quantity of spirits, a small mug...’ ‘Nog: a drink, East Anglian dialect for strong local beer.’ AMONG the stories I read to my children 30-odd years ago were the tales of Noggin the Nog, a fierce Norseman invading England. It’s easy to believe that, following real-life Norse invasions to our east coast, Norse words became absorbed into mediaeval East Anglian English, particularly in Norfolk. ‘Noggin’, a small mug, leads us neatly on to another related meaning. I remember old sailing salts back in the ‘50s inviting other yacht crews aboard ‘for a noggin’. The nog to drink from a noggin was not particularly specific, most likely whisky or gin, but the dictionary provides scope for it to be a spirit or a traditional beer. Which leads us to Woodforde’s brewery, founded over 30 years ago at Woodbastwick near Norwich.

IN THE DRINK
One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.

Anyone who has navigated the Norfolk Broads will have seen pubs offering a selection of Woodforde’s beers. They’re brewed with water from an ancient source beneath the brewery, along with Norfolk barley and a diverse range of whole hops producing innovative beers with distinctive flavour and aroma. Their Norfolk Wherry is a particularly good real ale on draught everywhere in the region. Amber and hoppy, it has won Champion Beers of Britain awards. Woodforde’s has annexed the ‘local beer’ part of the Nog definition to brew Woodforde’s Norfolk Nog as a classic ‘Old Ale’, also a Champion Beers of Britain award winner. Rich dark ruby with a velvety texture and hints of chocolate and liquorice, it’s not too strong at 4.6 percent abv. It’s a really good winter ale,
great with game dishes and an open log fire in the pub. £2.43 a bottle at the brewery shop or online at www.woodfordes.co.uk.
ENGLISH WHISKY
The English Whisky Company has annexed the spirit part of the Nog definition to make its Norfolk Nog Liqueur. A century ago whisky distilling in England ceased. The English Whisky Company built the brand new St Georges distillery at Roudham, Norfolk near the A14. The distillery opened to the public in August 2007 and the company has led the resurrection of English whisky, producing relatively
small batches with differing characteristics called ‘Chapters’. It has re-launched its Norfolk Nog cream liqueur in an elegant new bottle. It’s simply their single malt whisky infused with cream, and is recommended as a warmer for outdoors to accompany long walks or a day’s fishing or indoors over an ice cube in a comfy chair by a log fire. It’s 21 percent, £20 per 700ml bottle from the Distillery shop or online at www.englishwhisky.co.uk.
TOP YACHTIE BAR
Congratulations to the King & Queen pub in Hamble, voted number one bar in the 2014 edition of Wight Vodka’s annual World’s Favourite Yachting Bar competition organised through the Scuttlebutt Europe news blog. Long a crew favourite, voted Best in Europe in 2010, its crew comforts include an in-house launderette, free WiFi, real ales, Sunday roasts, yachting TV, winter log fire and also a summer garden. The Pier View, Cowes, made second place, and the Union Inn, Cowes, was also in the top ten along with exotic venues like Foxy’s and the Bitter End in the British Virgin Islands and the Clipper Bar in Porto Cervo. Just shows you what keeping the crew happy can do.
