NEW MODELS BUT JOBS TO GO

3

All At SeA FEBRUARY 2016

GoinG into its fiftieth year Princess Yachts is planning an extensive restructure of its Plymouth Headquarters that will see up to 350 jobs lost. The cuts to the 2,000-strong workforce will be spread across back office, development and production divisions. The manufacturer, which has sites across Plymouth, reports that these changes form part of a strategic plan to increase productivity across the Plymouth facilities. Chris Gates, Managing Director of Princess Yachts, said: “The strategic review of our business and the steps we are taking to improve production at our Plymouth headquarters have laid the foundations for an ambitious year. our expanded range – with six new models launched in just six months – is the envy of the industry, and our continued commitment to the finest British materials and peerless craftsmanship will always set Princess apart. “The announcement of job losses, although not undertaken lightly, is designed to maintain the business in the best possible shape for the next phase in its evolution. Princess’ 50th anniversary finds the company starting the

year at both the London and Düsseldorf boat shows with new model launches and strong plans for the future.” The news comes as Princess, which claims to have a strong order book, debuted the allnew S65 and the V58 open at the London Boat Show. The beautifully restored Project 31@50 ‘Charlotte’ was also at the show at the start of her 2016 world tour. This was followed by the global launch of the Princess 30M at boot Düsseldorf at the end of January. Despite the positive outlook by Princess, difficult trading conditions have affected the company’s finances, which resulted in a £11.3m loss for the 2014 financial year. This had followed, in 2013, a grant of £4.6 million received by the yacht builder to help it invest in a new 130ft superyacht and create 290 jobs. Although several British yacht builders – Fairline have also been hitting the headlines - are facing troubled times, the 2016 Global order Book suggests that the market is the strongest it has been for several years with more super yachts being built around the world now than at any time since the global financial crisis (see All at Sea January 2016).

SunSeeker Set to expand ‘GREAT FUTURE’ FOR FAIRLINE

wHiLE Princess Yachts and Fairline Boats are shedding jobs, Sunseeker international has announced plans to recruit 225 skilled staff, more than doubling the initial 100 new roles planned for 2016. The jobs will be based at Sunseeker’s manufacturing operations in Dorset, covering construction trades including carpentry and boat building, plus engineering trades and composites (GRP Laminating and GRP Finishing). Sunseeker’s CEo Phil Popham said: “we are pleased to announce these recruitment plans which give a clear signal of the positive times ahead at Sunseeker. we have a clear and robust business plan to invest in long-term growth and sustainable success. our forward order book for 2016 and beyond is looking very strong, currently up 55 per cent over the same period last year. “Expanding our highly skilled workforce is a

• Innovative design • Competitive pricing • Guaranteed compatibility • Unrivalled warranty

key part of our planned investment, and with the introduction of a number of new boat lines in 2016 we are able to recruit 225 new skilled staff to support future growth. This recruitment drive is underway and will conclude in the first half of the year, bringing our total employee number to around 2,150.” Candidates can apply via www.sunseeker.com/ recruitment or in person at Sunseeker House in Poole. in further news from the yacht builder the company revealed it plans, this summer, to launch its smallest flybridge model for over a decade, the new Manhattan 52. Before that, and following the success of the 131 Yacht launch at this year’s London Boat Show, Sunseeker is to launch two further large models this spring: the 116 Yacht and 95 Yacht. They have already generated £65 million of retail sales since being unveiled in 2015.

FoLLowinG the news that hundreds of jobs were lost when Fairline Boats went into administration just a few months after being acquired by the private equity firm wessex Bristol a buyer has been found. The new company, Fairline Yachts, is funded by two long term UK-based Russian investors, who are both highly experienced in managing and developing marine businesses as well as being passionate boat owners. Russell Currie has been appointed as Managing Director to lead the new business. with nearly 30 years directly relevant experience, Russell has a very strong background in the luxury motor yacht industry. A Fairline dealer since 1998, Russell is CEo of Fairline north Mallorca.

Russell said: “i am delighted to have been appointed Managing Director for Fairline Yachts. with the resources of the investors, coupled with the expert knowledge of the management team and our energy and passion for the brand, the structure is in place for a great future for Fairline Yachts. we will focus on creating high quality luxury motor yachts that boaters will want to own and dealers will want to sell.” The newly formed company will operate from its manufacturing facilities in oundle, northamptonshire. To ensure continuation of production of the boats, the company has invited previous employees to apply for around 100 jobs that will be immediately available.

ENTRIES OPEN FOR ROUND THE ISLAND RACE Image: Paul Wyeth

By Jane Hyde

IT is very chilly outside and getting away to somewhere warm sounds very appealing. Were you inspired by last month’s holiday feature to start planning this year’s boating get-aways? If so start turning those dreams into reality with our guide to some of the places you could be spending your 2016 holidays. Having visited the beautiful city of Dubrovnik before I particularly like the idea of Croatia or, for somewhere further afield, the whale shark migration and dive flotilla in Belize sounds like the trip of a lifetime. Whether you decide to stay in Europe or explore further we would love you to share your holiday snaps on the All at Sea Facebook page. One of the holidays you could book, and which you can read more about in the news pages, is a cruise that will include a stop in Bermuda during the 2017 America’s Cup. That would be an incredible trip, but at the moment we do not know if it will be Sir Ben Ainslie and the Land Rover BAR team who will be battling it out against Oracle Team USA. The first America’s Cup World Series event of 2017 takes place this month in Muscat, Oman and Land Rover BAR will be looking to improve on their third position in the overall standings. Paul Campbell-James, Wing Trimmer Land Rover BAR, has taken time out from the team’s busy schedule to talk about what it is like to be involved in this incredible team, and to have the backing of the British public. Find out what Paul had to say on page 24. Land Rover BAR’s Sir Ben is a busy man off the water as well as on it. Visitors to the London Boat Show might have spotted him, along with the likes of Dee Caffari, at the Show Theatre. As the show came to a close a host of new boats and products had been launched, many of which you

Jane was at the London Boat Show with the All at Sea team

will find mentioned in these pages. This included the largest boat to be globally launched at the show - a 40.05m Sunseeker 131 Yacht. Head over to www.allatsea.co.uk to see lots of photos from the show. Sunseeker reported a very successful show with £40m of sales. Princess Yachts, despite announcing job losses, also debuted new boats at the show. However one notable absentee from the event was Fairline Boats. The company went into administration last year with the loss of hundreds of jobs, but things are looking brighter for 2016 with reports that a buyer has been found. Let us hope this means the company, and jobs, will stay in the UK. Lastly, a request. We have loved seeing the photos you send in, and now we would also like to see and read about your boats. So send over a picture of two and some details about your boat and how you got into boating and you could be in the next issue of All at Sea. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

FOLLOWING last summer’s hugely successful race the entries are now open for the 85th edition of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. To encourage a strong take up of early bird entries, the Island Sailing Club is offering one free entry to this year’s race, which takes place on 2 July. The winner’s name will be drawn at

random after Early Bird entries close on 13 February. The race organisers at the Island Sailing Club have also announced that the new Fast 40+ Class will be competing in the Round the Island Race. The class will not be eligible to race for the Gold Roman Bowl but is competing for the Turbo UK Cup. The race welcomes back the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in its final year as the Official Race Charity after five years and a fantastic £226,364.25 raised. It has enabled an additional 334 young people to join the Trust for a four-day trip

and 95 young people in recovery from cancer to be able to sail in the race. In 2016, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is hoping to raise a further £40,000 through its association with the Race. The ISC’s Race Management team is putting in place a series of Q&A sessions via the race website between February and June. A team of experts in their fields, including one or two well-known names who are especially familiar with the event, will be available to answer questions. http://www.rtir.me/entries www.roundtheisland.org.uk

Big deals made at London show AS the 62nd London Boat Show drew to a close 90,328 people visited ExCeL to experience the very best that the boating industry has to offer. Although the numbers were down on the 92,288 of the previous year, the show saw over 132 boats make their debut, including the largest ever boat to be globally launched at the show - a 40.05m Sunseeker 131 Yacht which was berthed out on the dockside. The Theatre welcomed a line-up of some of the world’s leading boating experts talking about the latest technology and innovations. Guests included Sir Ben Ainslie, Land Rover BAR’s Fitness Coach, Ben Williams, Volvo Ocean Race winner, Ian Walker

and record-breaking female sailor, Dee Caffari MBE. Many companies reported an increase on last year’s figures including numerous multi-million pound deals. Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker, said: “This has been our most successful London Boat Show for a number of years, with confirmed boat orders worth £40m of retail sales and several more sales in the pipeline. It is very good news for the sector because it is the first show of the year and it is an excellent barometer of sales to come in 2016.” The London Boat Show 2017 will take place from 6 - 15 January 2017. www.londonboatshow.com

RECREATIONAL SAILOR BEATS THE PROFESSIONALS Sir Robin Knox-Johnston presented the RYA yachtmaster of the Year 2015 award to winner Angus Watson

RYA Yachtmaster™ of the Year 2015 was awarded to recreational sailor Angus Watson for his exceptional demonstration of sailing skills when passing his RYA Yachtmaster™ certificate of competence exam. Fittingly, round the world amateur yachtsman Angus was presented with the prestigious trophy, donated by the Royal Institute of Navigation, by the first man to sail solo non-stop around the world, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, at the London Boat Show. No stranger to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Chairman of event organisers Clipper Ventures, Angus was also a bowman and deputy watch leader on Victoria Clipper and successfully took part in the Clipper 2005-6 Round the World Yacht Race. Angus and the crew of Victoria Clipper claimed victory on the North Pacific leg into her ‘home’ port of Victoria, British Columbia and came second on the notorious Southern Ocean leg. Victoria Clipper finished 6th overall in the race. During the Clipper Race Angus met his wife Laura. They own a Nicholson 31 ‘Snow Goose of Hamble’ in which they have cruised the West Country, Ireland and Brittany. She is moored in the River Hamble and they cruise locally around the Solent when not on longer trips.

Angus, 51, learned to sail in Mirror and Laser dinghies on family holidays in Rock, Cornwall. In his teens he participated in family flotilla sailing holidays in Greece and bareboat charters on the west coast of Scotland. In his twenties and thirties, Angus joined cruises with the Army Sailing Association in the Baltic, as well as cruising with friends to the Channel Islands and France. An active member of the Bembridge Sailing Club, Angus also sails a Scow and Redwing as well as encouraging his three small children to be active in all kinds of boats ranging from rowing a Peanut to messing around in motor boats. He has been an active member of the Royal Cruising Club since 2013. Speaking at the presentation James Stevens, Chairman of the Yachtmaster Qualification Panel, said: “It is quite unusual that the winner of this year’s award is a recreational rather than professional yachtsman. The Yachtmaster is easily the world’s leading yachting qualification so to be the best candidate of the year is an outstanding achievement – and one that Angus should feel rightly proud of.” Watc the video of Angus receiving his award at the All at Sea website: www.allatsea.co.uk

NEW YEAR RESCUE

UK MARINE INDUSTRY GROWTH

Will Heritage (14) won the Young Skipper’s Trophy fleet in 2015 sailing his Flying 15, Freddie Flintoff, with his father David. Image: Rick Tomlinson

THE UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry continues to grow, according to new statistics published by British Marine at the London Boat Show. Impressive growth in domestic consumer markets has helped off-set a tricky year for exporters who are still feeling the effects of a sluggish Eurozone and the wider global economic conditions felt by most UK business sectors. Inland hire, charter and

passenger boat services have performed particularly well, capitalising on the increasing popularity of the UK with international visitors and the growth in UK consumer confidence. Strong results were also seen in insurance, financial and brokerage services, as both domestic and international customers continue to seek out UK expertise, reinforcing the UK’s position as a global hub for marine consumer and business services.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ ship Braemar came to the aid of a sailing yacht marooned in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean resulting with the dramatic rescue of Nicollet and her four Polish passengers and crew who had been adrift for nearly three days. Following her rescue by Braemar and subsequent repairs, Nicollet was able to continue her voyage to Dominica.

RECORDS DEMOLISHED AT 80TH ANNIVERSARY RACE

BIG winds, big speeds and the fastest times ever recorded made the 80th anniversary Mount Gay Round Barbados Race one of the most spectacular in history with a total of five records broken and each team winning their skipper’s weight in rum. There was a mix of yachts but the stars of the show that set off last and raced 60nms round the island neck and neck were the two world-class MOD70s – MS Barbados Concise 10, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield, and Phaedo3 co skippered by Lloyd Thornburg and Brian Thompson. Right from the start in the 20 knot breeze, there was no stopping these powerful beasts as they took off from the line in Carlisle Bay and circumnavigated the island in the fastest ever speeds. They jostled for dominance all the way round the course and ended their battle with MS Barbados Concise 10 claiming victory by just 12 seconds. They completed the course in just 2 hours, 37 minutes, 38 seconds, shaving under two hours off the previous Multihull record. Trevor Hunte also smashed the Windsurfer record he set in 2014 by an impressive 2 hour, 41 minute margin and the singlehanded record was broken by J/24 sailor Cecil Lecrenay on Bunga-Bunga. He completed the course in 9 hours, 46 minutes, 42 seconds. The final two records were the OneDesign J/24taken by Team College Funds and the 60ft and Under which was taken by TP52 Conviction.

THE tightest battle of the Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race so far came right down to the final seconds as LMAX Exchange claimed an incredibly narrow victory over constant rival GREAT Britain in the Henri Lloyd Hobart to Whitsundays Race. Just 42 seconds separated the teams when they crossed Airlie Beach’s Pioneer Bay Finish Line after spending 48 hours locked in battle, match racing within close sight of each other up the tropical Queensland coast. Garmin finished almost 90 minutes later to take the third podium in the final race in this All Australian leg, which had the most amount of lead and fleet position changes of all six races completed so far. LMAX Exchange Skipper Olivier Cardin summed up the intensity of the race: “It was more than hard. Since the beginning, we had the battle with GREAT Britain for the Scoring Gate, then fighting against the current and dealing with heavy weather. Then we sailed into a wind hole and all the fleet were catching up and we were with GREAT Britain and Garmin. Then it has been just us and GREAT Britain the last two and half days. “In fact, as we approached the finish and we had a one nautical mile lead, it looked quite easy because we were going at the same speed, but then as we passed the first island and night fall came there were wind holes everywhere. It was really, really difficult.

They won back some distance and nearly overtook us.” Despite finishing in second place GREAT Britain Skipper Peter Thornton says his crew really enjoyed the close match racing with LMAX Exchange: “It has been brilliant. We were saying the other day how all the crew is loving how close the racing is with LMAX Exchange. We were neck and neck, the sun was rising and both under full spinnakers, everyone was taking photos and had big smiles on their faces, it was just insane.” On the second day of racing GREAT Britain beat LMAX Exchange to cross the Scoring Gate first and pick up three and two additional bonus points respectively, meaning that both teams will end up tied for this race on points – at 14 apiece. Just five points separate the teams in the overall Clipper Race leaderboard with LMAX Exchange still holding on to a narrow lead. The final team to cross the finish line was Mission Performance after diverting to help a non-Clipper Race yacht in distress on Day 5 of the race. Crew and visitors were encouraged to give the team something of a hero’s welcome as it sacrificed its race position, as per the laws of the sea, for going to the assistance of another vessel in distress which included a difficult rendezvous, crew transfer and mast climb. The Clipper Race departed Australia for Race 7 to Da Nang, Vietnam on 18 January and has an arrival window into Da Nang of 17 - 21 February.

LMAX EXCHANGE PIPS GREAT BRITAIN

THE Youth Sailing Team’s Emma Wilson in the RSX Women’s class and Daniel Whiteley in Laser Radial class won silver and bronze medals respectively at the 2015 Youth Sailing World Championships in Langkawi, Malaysia. They were among 14 young British sailors competing in the prestigious Championships, with over

425 sailors competing from 76 different nations. Great Britain finished fourth in the Nations Trophy – a strong performance from the young British sailors. RYA Youth Racing Manager Mark Nicholls said: “Fourth on the Nations Trophy table is a huge improvement on last year and we were actually very close to beating the French. “With a relatively inexperienced team, the coaches did a fantastic job looking after the sailors and they should be proud of their work. They have no doubt contributed to the medals but also to every sailor’s learning and improvement.”

HMS DRAGON

the Royal Navy’s Welsh flagship HMS Dragon reached a major milestone in her 12 month refit when she emerged from dry dock in Portsmouth Naval Base. Seven months into an extensive maintenance period, the ‘floodup’ evolution saw water surge through the dock gates and the type 45 Destroyer float on the water for the first time since October. HMS Dragon is due to return to the Fleet in June, when she will begin sea trials followed by a training package to prepare her for future operations.

MegAN Pascoe rounded off a dominant display of racing to claim her first 2.4mR World Championship title in hobart, Australia. The 29-year-old secured the Open Worlds victory a day early, having amassed an unassailable lead ahead of the final scheduled day of competition. Pascoe has been a regular podium performer at both disabled and Open World Championships for the one-person 2.4mR Paralympic class, but this is her first time on the top step and she was determined not to be outdone by brother Sam, himself a World Champion in the International 14 class.

DID YOU KNOW? The Argentinian town of epecuen used to be a popular lakeside tourist resort, but in 1985, after a series of wet winters, the lake overflowed. The water broke through the lake wall and flooded the town. Fortunately the town’s residents were evacuated safely, but the town remained underwater until the water evaporated. Now the ruins of the town have emerged and locals can walk around epecuen again.

“For me to actually go out and do this in this style is great,” said Pascoe, who ended the regatta with a 21-point margin over home hero Matt Bugg. “I have only ever had a couple of regattas like that where everything has happened as it should and you have had that little bit of luck so I am really pleased.” Although Pascoe’s own hopes of a Paralympic games berth did not come to fruition for Rio, with defending 2.4mR Paralympic Champion helena Lucas earning the nod for great Britain last year, she is resolute that she will get her chance. “I will be competing at the Paralympics; it just might not be this one!” she said confidently.

Richard said: “Obviously boats were slower in those days and hopefully I will go a little quicker this time. My objective is to finish, qualify and learn.”

World’s fastest woman SPINDRIFT 2, skippered by Yann Guichard, has finished its first Jules Verne Trophy, registering the second fastest time in history with Dona Bertarelli becoming the fastest woman to have sailed around the world. The sailors on Spindrift 2 crossed the finish line off Ushant after 47 days 10 hours 59 minutes and 02 seconds at sea. After nearly 29,000 miles travelled at an average speed of 25.35 knots, the black and gold trimaran also improved three record times (Ushant-Equator, UshantTasmania and Ushant-Cape Horn) and

held, for a few hours, the record for the crossing of the Indian Ocean. Dona Bertarelli, helm/trimmer said: “This ascent of the Atlantic has been long, laborious, and it felt like time was standing still. “Completing this voyage around the world allowed me to achieve the goals I had set myself, even if we did not beat the record for the Jules Verne Trophy. I have no regrets because the essential thing was to get back to Ushant as quickly as possible and we did everything we could to achieve that.”

CLUB PLANS DESERT REGATTA A YACHT club in the desert in one of the most remote locations on earth is planning its first regatta in four years – but only if there is enough water. The Lake Eyre Yacht Club in South Australia sits on the shores of the continent’s largest lake and the thirteenth biggest inland body of water in the world. It is also dry most of the time and only completely fills about four times each century – the last time being 1974. But seasonal rains are beginning to arrive in Lake Eyre after flowing to the salt lake through a network of rivers that drain into a basin covering a sixth of Australia – about the size of Spain. Lake Eyre Yacht Club Commodore Bob Backway said boats had not been on the main lake since 2011 but the recent rains had members excited. The club, located about 700km north of the South Australian capital city Adelaide, has 220 members from all over

Australia and even some from the United States, UK and Germany. It stores 10 boats in sheds at the club but the majority of members bring their yachts on trailers by road. The closest community to Lake Eyre, William Creek, is 60km away and has a permanent population of six. The last regatta hosted by the club was in 2012, on Lake Killamperpunna about 120km east of Lake Eyre. It attracted 42 boats and was held over six days across two divisions and included multiple classes.

FLYINg INTO THE rECOrD bOOKS Round the World Yachtsman Alex Alley has set a new world record in his Class 40 ‘Pixel Flyer’ – sailing the Length of Britain from Lands end to John o’Groats in 83h 53m 15s. Gosport sailor Alex, along with Phil Sharp and Adventurer Sean Conway (the only person to have run, cycled and swam the route), set out from Falmouth in their record attempt. 24 hours of fast reaching saw them up by the Isle of Man, hitting speeds in excess of 20 knots. The strong breeze continued through the night and most of the following day but the weather changed significantly and the team was becalmed off the west coast of Scotland. After a restless night of trying to coax everything out of the boat they passed Cape Wrath in the early morning and went on to cross the finish line off John o’Groats later that day, thereby establishing a new record for the Length of Britain. Alex said: “So many people have run, walked, cycled and even swam from Lands end to John o’Groats, but there was never

JUTLAND EXHIBITION TO OPEN ON 12 May, in the centenary year, The National Museum of the Royal Navy will open a major exhibition to commemorate the largest naval battle in history, the Battle of Jutland. ‘36 Hours: Jutland 1916, The Battle That Won The War’ will be the most comprehensive exhibition ever staged on the subject and will highlight the essential role of the British Royal Navy in winning the First World War.

The exhibition launch coincides with the NMRN’s other major contribution to the Jutland centenary, the opening of the battle’s only survivor HMS Caroline, in Belfast 2016. www.nmrn.org.uk

ENGINE EXCLUSIVE SUZUKI LAUNCH NEW PORTABLE OUTBOARDS

POWER NEWS

THIS is the season when many marine engine manufacturers announce their new ranges and All At Sea is the first to bring you news of the DF6A, DF5A and DF4A portable outboards from the Japanese giant, Suzuki. On 23 January Suzuki launched its brand new, lightweight and portable outboards at the Düsseldorf Boat Show. With many of you owning tenders and small craft, these are exciting new offerings that tick lots of boxes. With storage often at a premium you can stow these little engines almost any way you like and weighing in at only 23.5kg a piece, they have got to be worth a closer look. These new models are lightweight, quiet and user friendly. With two sturdy carry handles it makes them easy to lift on and off your boat or in and out of storage. And storage is easier with a new three-way storage capability. The improved fuel and lubricating systems allow convenient storage of the

outboard on any of three sides (port, starboard or front) without the worry of fuel or oil leakage. The new forced lubrication system is unique as it has an additional oil passage to the upper and lower crankshaft and connecting rod big end. The addition of a new design oil filter is said to increase reliability. Once on the boat, operating the new engines is made easy by the new gravity-fed fuel delivery system, which means you do not have to prime the fuel line before starting after storage. An easy recoil starter means less effort is required to get up and running and once underway the new tilt system is said to improve the overall operation of the outboard. Suzuki is keen to point out the smooth and quiet running of these engines. This is in some part down to an offset crankshaft, which results in a smoother piston movement thus improving operating efficiency and reducing vibrations. Suzuki has also made improvements to the tiller handle to mitigate vibrations being transmitted to your hand during use.

These little outboards benefit from Suzuki’s anti-corrosion system. Applied directly to the aluminium surface it maximises the bond between the finish and the surface, increasing the protection and durability of parts that are constantly exposed to saltwater. All three engines are finished in Nebular Black. Masahiro Yamamoto, General Manager for Suzuki Marine’s European Liaison Office,

said, “We are honoured to be able to launch these incredible new models and showcase them to the world for the very first time here at Düsseldorf. Yet again our engineers have succeeded in creating new generation outboards that are market-leading in terms of weight and specification yet extremely user-friendly.” At the time of going to press we have no prices for the DF4A, DF5A or DF6A but with the older DF4, 5 and 6 around the £1k mark they are not expected to break the bank. Suzuki’s has a full range of engines from the lightweight, portable DF2.5 at £620 to the DF300AP Lean Burn at £21,995.

SUZUKI’S BIG OFFERS FIRST POWER-CONVERTIBLE MOTOR YACHT IF you are in the market for a new outboard one of Suzuki’s latest offers, launched at the London Boat Show, could be for you. Their ‘back on the water’ bonus sees Suzuki offering up to £400 off their range of portable models (DF2.5 – DF30A). Suzuki is also offering up to £1,000 of Henri Lloyd kit with its performance outboards (DF40A – Df3000AP). Both offers run until 31 March. www.suzuki-marine.co.uk

BRITISH SAILING TEAM FOLLOWING THE BRITISH TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO

Image: Paul Wyeth/RYA

Getting Rio ready RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park looks ahead to an exciting Games year in our latest British Sailing Team column.

IT is almost hard to believe that we are in an Olympic and Paralympic Games year once again. 2015 was a busy year and a long regatta season, with major events running right through from January until December, but it was good to see the British Sailing Team emerge from the pre-Games year in good shape. We ended the year as top nation in terms of the medal table from the Olympic Classes World Championships, and we were also the top nation in the Sailing World Cup series. We had crews in medal positions in two out of the three events in the Paralympic Classes, narrowly missing out in the third. While there is still plenty of work to be done, in terms of outcomes against other nations I think we are shaping up pretty well. It was great to see Giles Scott’s continued dominance in the Finn class, culminating in his third world title, and Nick Thompson’s long-awaited first

Laser World Championship victory. The Sonar team of John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas rounded off a difficult year with gold at the Para World Sailing Championships, where Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell also claimed silver. Bryony Shaw also had a fantastic 2015 and probably her best year ever in the RS:X, really making some good ground, as have the 470 Women Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark. PODIUMS AWAIT We are making good progress across the other classes as well, and I am confident that we will be in the position of having 13 realistic medal opportunities across the 10 Olympic and three Paralympic classes by the time we get to the Games. That is our aim, with the goal to convert around half of those medal opportunities into podium finishes. That will be no mean feat in the testing venue that is Rio, and amid an

increasingly competitive international fleet. The differences between first and fourth in the Olympic Classes are smaller than they have ever been. Right across all the fleets it Is becoming more and more competitive which, from a sporting perspective, is fantastic but of course our job is about winning those medals, so it just means it is tougher for the British Sailing Team. It reinforces the need for us to be looking for every single gain that we can make, pulling together across the classes and using all our experience in what will be an aggressive environment and competitive landscape at the Games in Rio. RIO’S CHALLENGES We have visited Rio many times now, and will visit many more times in the months leading up to the Games. Maximising time in the venue is a key part of our strategy to try and understand the vagaries of the tide and the wind there. It is a challenging venue that even the locals are struggling with, so for visiting sailors to give themselves the best chance of mitigating home advantage they need to be there often enough and for long enough to try and get to grips with it. Throughout 2016 we will see the excitement levels start to build and that buzz around the Games will grow once more. I think as we get closer, all the negative chat around Rio will dissipate

FORMIDABLE By Steve R. Dunn £12.99

Formidable is the third in a trilogy of naval history books by Steve Dunn in which he unpicks the far-reaching effects of the social and political climate under which the First World War began – a period that he calls ‘Vicwardian’. The stifling atmosphere of rigid social hierarchy, pointless deference and refusal to update rules of engagement that were largely unchanged since Nelson led, Dunn argues, to defective decision making and, ultimately, disaster. Formidable sailed to her doom under a vice admiral who did not accept the threat posed by new technology – submarines, the U-boats. As a result, a major ship of the British navy’s battle fleet was lost and 583 men met their deaths. Dunn tells some of their individual stories in heart-breaking detail.

SAILING ALONE AROUND THE WORLD

THE COMPLETE ILLUSTRATED EDITION

By Joshua Slocum Introduction by Geoffrey Wolff £23 (hardback) This is Joshua Slocum’s memoir about sailing alone around the world aboard his sloop, Spray. The book was an immediate success when it was first published in 1900 and was highly influential in inspiring later travellers to do the same. Slocum, aboard Spray, crossed the Atlantic twice (to Gibraltar and back to South America), negotiated the Strait of Magellan and crossed the Pacific. He also visited Australia and South Africa before crossing the Atlantic (for the third time) to return to Massachusetts after a journey of 46,000 miles. Filled with art, photographs, maps, artefacts and period illustrations, this new edition features excerpts from

those who, inspired by Slocum, also circumnavigated the globe, as well as other well known sailors, sailing enthusiasts and sailing writers such as Henry Dana, Geoffrey Wolff, William F. Buckley, and Nathaniel Philbrick.

ExpErts’ forum

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

FIGHTING FIRES ON BOARD

Fighting Fire Jim Dobie is chief instructor and training manager for Vortec Marine Training. An RYA examiner, instructor and Oceanmaster he has spent his life on the ocean and is an accomplished ocean/ offshore racing skipper and yacht training specialist. He also spends his time writing, speaking and advising on yacht safety.

FIRE at sea is one of the most terrifying things that can happen. Smoke, heat and alarms can quickly lead to disorientation, panic and in the worst case tragedy. Knowing how to quickly and rapidly get the situation under control is vital and that means not only having the right equipment on board but all the crew knowing what every bit of equipment does and when to use it. Invariably this comes down to having the correct training and running a thorough safety briefing. Bear in mind that on shore we are taught and drilled that on hearing a fire alarm we should evacuate the building, head for the muster stations and wait for the fire service to arrive.

Courses need not be expensive but can save lives

battery isolator switch that every yacht should have fitted. Once isolated you can then fight the fire with extinguishers be it powder/CO2 or water.

Would you know what to do in the event of a fire?

rAiSe the ALArM On a yacht we have no such luxury and have to take fast and decisive action. Immediately raise the alarm “FIRE, FIRE, FIRE” and follow up by fighting the fire. I

have experienced two fires on board: one was an electrical fire (short circuit) and the other was a suspected engine fire. On both occasions I was skipper and both times the crew’s reaction was to freeze and be unsure of what to do, even after a comprehensive safety briefing. On finding or suspecting a fire your actions need to be definite and fast. Remember the fire triangle and remove fuel, oxygen and heat. If it is an electrical fire you need to shut off the electrical supply, which is achieved by using the

engine Fire If you have a suspected engine or generator fire, shut down the machinery, shut the fuel supply off by activating the shut off valves, close any vents and then tackle the fire. One of the best ways is to have an automatic fire suppressant system fitted in the engine compartment that is heat activated. However never ever open the compartment as you will immediately introduce oxygen which will feed the fire. Instead set off an extinguisher through an extinguisher access port. With a galley fire again immediately turn off the gas supply; the easiest and safest way to do this is to shut the gas bottle off on deck. If it is a cooking or pan fire then use a fire blanket remembering to wrap it round your hands and hold it in front of you smothering the fire. Never use water on a pan fire. Knowing the theory is a good foundation but until you have actually put the theory into practise and used an extinguisher or a fire blanket, listened to the alarms and experienced a smoke filled space you will not know how to really react which is why you and your crew should get training. This does not have to be an expensive course and for as little as £75 you can have a go in Vortec Marine Training’s fire simulator where you actually experience a smoke filled environment, real fires and the sounds of alarms. Priceless. www.vortecmarine.com

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH ALEX THOMPSON, ONE OF BRITAIN’S MOST SUCCESSFUL YACHTSMEN Images: Mark lloyd

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO SAILING?

I first got into watersports when I tried windsurfing at the age of 11. From the first time out on the water I just felt at home. From there I tried any and all watersports including kitesurfing, wakeboarding and, of course, sailing.

YOU HAVE SO MANY INCREDIBLE ACHIEVEMENTS. DOES ONE STAND OUT IN YOUR MEMORY?

Finishing third in the 2012-2013 Vendee Globe. The race is a solo, unassisted round the world mission that takes place every four years and in my opinion it remains one of, if not the, toughest

sporting challenges there is. People often call it ‘the Everest’ of sailing, but over 3,000 people have climbed Everest and less than 100 people have completed the Vendee, so being amongst that short list of people is something I am proud of. My biggest ambition, though, is to become the first Briton, in fact the first non-Frenchman, to win the race. I was pleased with my third place finish last time, but the ultimate goal is to better that and to get myself to the top of the podium. That is what I am focused on as I head in to the next Vendee, which gets underway later this year (starts on 6 November from les Sables d’Olonne).

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE VENDEE GLOBE THAT YOU LOVE? It is the extremity of the challenge that appeals to me. To finish the race, let alone win it, gains you entry to an incredibly elite group of people. I am also very competitive by nature, and as one of the toughest competitions you can take part in it is something I am naturally drawn to. At the end of the day the motivation and the reward for me is always to be performing well, and ideally to be winning.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW HUGO BOSS RACING YACHT. Our new HUGO BOSS boat has been two years in the making and has been built with our sights firmly set on that Vendee Globe prize. It is 5 per cent lighter than my previous boat and, therefore, hopefully faster. Our new HUGO BOSS incorporates many unique design features, with the most obvious being that this time our yacht is black. Normally racing yachts are white because of the heat reflecting qualities of the colour white. Black absorbs heat which, in usual circumstances, would make living conditions onboard unbearable and

would lead to parts of the boat’s structure melting. However, the team have been working with BASF, a chemical engineering company, to develop a black paint that both reflects heat and is suitable for a marine environment. The end result is a totally unique boat that is visually really stunning.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SAILORS INSPIRED BY YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS?

Just get yourself out on the water and practice as much as possible. There are sailing clubs up and down the country welcoming new and experienced sailors alike, so there is plenty of opportunity to get out on the water.

My oft repeated motto is that ‘to finish first, first you have to finish’, which could not be more apt in an unpredictable sport like offshore sailing. These words of wisdom were given to me by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who over the years has become my mentor and great friend. Robin was the first person ever to sail single-handedly non-stop around the world, and this was back in 1969 before much of the technology we use on today’s racing yachts was in use. It was an incredible achievement and one that I admire hugely.

BOATING WOMEN SALCOMBE DINgHY SAILINg’S ZOE CROOk

THIS GIRL DID Fear of judgement is stopping many women from enjoying sailing, so Salcombe Dinghy Sailing’s Zoe Crook decided to do something about it. THE idea of trying a new sport for the first time can be a daunting one. Even more so when you are venturing into a predominately male orientated environment. I know this first hand, so I decided to take things into my own hands and inspire more women in Salcombe to not only try sailing but enjoy it as a regular activity. Helping me along the way was Sport England’s well-timed This Girl Can campaign, designed to get more women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability. The whole pretence being to do ‘their thing’ no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their faces get.

Ross and Zoe Crook are working hard to encourage more women to start sailing

FIRST STEPS Talking to a number of women in Salcombe it was evident that preconceptions and barriers were still preventing them from getting more involved, despite a huge desire to do so. This was the point when we knew exactly what to do to help more women take their vital first step into sailing. This effectively saw them earn their

sailing wings, which meant they could progress as far as they wanted to, whether it was joining the local Yacht Club’s ‘Ladies that Launch’ initiative or simply making their own way simply for the enjoyment of sailing. TAILOR MADE The key first stage was to tailor the first steps to an individual’s needs, tweaking our RYA-accredited tuition and boat hire offerings accordingly. Not everyone wants to race. Some just

Ross and Zoe, in the yellow jackets, are with a group of Salcombe residents in a group session to help get them familiar with the water

like to potter, while others want to push themselves but have fun at the same time. So, recognising that not everyone can commit to the normal two full days usually required, we tweaked our RYA

courses so the ladies could complete them in half day blocks. Teaching ratios were kept low at 3:1, with my partner Ross providing experienced, calm tuition from within the boat. The focus was on simple, reassuring tuition that built confidence and dispelled the perception that starting to learn can be a cold and wet experience. It really shows how, with a little bit of creativity, we can help others catch the sailing bug to the benefit the industry as a whole. With over a combined 23 years’ experience, Zoe and Ross Crook bought Salcombe Dinghy Sailing in June 2014 and offering RYA courses, private tuition and boat hire. As much as the thought of drier, warmer weather and bluer skies offers some incentive, you still have to face the single most arduous chore of scrubbing and prepping hulls ready for a fresh coat of antifoul. Antifouling, by design, is harmful to aquatic life otherwise it would not work. But a targeted use to control hull fouling is important for safety, speed and efficiency through the water. In addition to dealing with slime, weed or animal fouling such as barnacles, hydroids and molluscs, it also helps to minimise the threat of a more recent and growing problem - invasive non-native species. NON-NATIVES Non-native species (sometimes known as alien species) are plants or animals that have been introduced to an area outside their natural range; mostly in ship ballast water, via aquaculture and through secondary spread on the hulls and equipment of recreational vessels.

You do not want barnacles like these on your hull

Ensure you are using the correct safety equipment

There are over 90 marine non-native species in the UK and at least 20 are known to be invasive. In other words they are harmful to habitats and native species, as well as damaging to equipment and facilities including boat inlets and outlets, props, keels and rudders. An annual scrub and if needed a new coat of antifoul will definitely help. It is a good time to ask your local chandlery about the range of options on the market (low Volatile Organic Compounds, alternative hull paints such as vinyl, silicone or Teflon or even an ultrasonic system) and the most appropriate solution for your sailing conditions. It is also good to ask how best to deal with the type of fouling where you keep or sail your boat, bearing in mind that some invasive species are developing a resistance to copper-based antifouling paints. POLLUTION PREVENTION The key to finding the balance between controlling fouling and preventing pollution from excess amounts of antifoul is largely down to common sense. The potential for impact is greatest where concentrated copper scrapings, dust and debris are

allowed to enter the water, so as you head to the boatyard in the next few weeks take a couple of simple steps to safeguard the environment. Tarpaulins are an inexpensive solution for skirting the hull when sanding (preferably with a dustless vacuum sander that will protect your health too) and when scrubbing. Tarps are also an easy way to catch drips and spills when painting. Most marinas and boatyards would prefer not to have sites covered with blue patches or to have loose material blowing into the marina or nearby surface water drains. If you are doing the work yourself, ask the marina if they have some tarps you can use (and if they say no ask them to get in touch with The Green Blue). Remember that antifouling tins as well as topside paints, varnishes and solvents and used brushes, rollers and trays all have to be disposed of as hazardous waste in the hazardous waste bins and not mixed in with general waste. SAILING HOLIDAYS

Last month we looked at the types of boating holidays that are available and the best times to go. However it is the where to go that can often be the most difficult question to answer.

Dream destinations

Looking for a new adventure or just want some guaranteed sun? The perfect holiday destination is waiting for you. WHERE TO GO?

There are incredible boating locations all around the world and travellers will never be short of finding a new holiday spot. Just like here in the UK, many holiday hot spots are better at certain times of the year. So, whether you are heading off this month or in December, here are a few tips for places to go throughout the year. January: The Caribbean is one of the best holiday destinations at this time of the year with sublime weather and very reasonable prices after the peak season. February: Book a romantic sailing holiday in Grenada with its consistent sunshine and warm, year-long trade winds. excellent for diving and snorkeling. March: A sailing holiday in Thailand is a great option for those seeking an adventure in an exotic and beautiful place a world away from the hustle and bustle of a busy life. April: head to the Med and get your rYA Day Skipper qualification before the summer sailing season starts. The sailing conditions at easter are lovely there. May: The Greek islands are wonderful at this time of year with great weather but without the summer crowds. June: For something different add Sweden to your itinerary this year. With almost 24 hours of daylight plenty of relaxed sailing is guaranteed in June.

1 A flotilla could be the perfect holiday this year

July: Go to the Italian islands in early to mid July and you will just miss the families with school children (and higher prices). Find great food and weather at the likes of Sardinia, Sicily and elba. August: It will be busy but it is also a wonderful time to take a holiday. Book yourself onto a flotilla and meet other sailors for the adventure of a lifetime. September: head to Croatia where the weather will still be good but it will be far less crowded. October: Turkey stays beautifully warm right up to end of October so extend your summer with an end of season sailing trip along the Turquoise Coast. November: At this time of year you could head further afield to somewhere like the British Virgin Islands and enjoy high temperatures. The BVI sailing season is in full swing by early November. December: Feeling like a treat? Book a preXmas break in the Caribbean. With direct flights and perfect weather, Antigua is a great choice for a week’s sailing holiday.

Ionian in Greece. Still the most popular sailing destination in the Med. The sheltered anchorages, picturesque harbours and gentler winds are perfect for a relaxed sailing trip. Anchor in picturesque bays where you can picnic and swim or moor up in bustling fishing harbours. Flotillas in the Ionian are always best sellers but bareboat charters are also in demand. If you have sailed the Ionian, why not discover the Saronic Gulf from Athens or the Sporades islands from Skiathos.

3 2

Trogir in Croatia. Marina fees are payable in Croatia but the sailing is great, with reliable winds and such a variety of islands to visit. Trogir is the perfect place to start your holiday, close to Split airport and a gem of a medieval walled town. enjoy a quiet anchorage in Kornati National Park one night and

Orhaniye in Turkey. Sailing is the only way to discover this beautiful unspoilt part of the Turkish coast, rich in scenery and history. Anchor in sheltered bays and swim off your yacht in clear turquoise seas. Moor up at the wooden pontoons outside beachside restaurants, step ashore and enjoy excellent Turkish cuisine sitting out under the stars.

4

British Virgin Islands. Steady trade winds give perfect sailing conditions, while white sandy beaches and amazing snorkelling make sailing in the BVI a delight. Catamarans are very popular here; even if you sail yachts in the UK the space and comfort that catamarans can provide for a Caribbean holiday are very appealing.

early Season breaks. If you are keen to kick-start your sailing season with an early season trip, May Bank holiday is getting booked up quickly. May and June are perfect months for a sailing holiday. The anchorages are deserted and the harbours have plenty of space for mooring up at night. It is wonderfully relaxed before the peak summer rush and all at low season prices.

NEW FOR 2016

If you are interested in trying somewhere new this year keep an eye out for the latest destinations and holiday packages. Itineraries often change and places get added, so it is worth getting in touch with holiday companies early and finding out what has been added for 2016. for example, Seafarer has announced three new flotillas including a new Kefalonia flotilla in the South Ionian in Greece, a Dubrovnik flotilla in Croatia and a new flotilla in Mallorca.

Managing Director, Chris Lorenzo said: “Our regular clients are the ones who have encouraged us to introduce these new itineraries, given that both the Ionian Isles and the Dalmatian coast have a strong following with client feedback clearly expressing a desire to explore further. Mallorca was a logical additional step for us since we have a lot of experience of the area within the team and a lot of interest from our existing client base.” We are sure Sunsail’s new whale shark migration and dive flotilla will also be a popular choice in 2016, but more on that later.

ALEX ALLEY THE STORY OF A RECORD BREAKER

LENgTH Of BRITAIN

Alex returns with the inside story behind his successful Length of Britain record attempt.

SAVE

The whole reason I began the PixelBoat campaign was to set world records, so when I was approached a couple of months ago to see if I was interested in having a go at setting a Length of Britain record, from Lands end to John O’Groats, I jumped at the chance. Although the boat was not quite ready, it was ready enough for the challenge – crashing up the Irish Sea and around the top of Scotland in December. What could possibly go wrong? After a couple of days prepping the boat it was delivered to Falmouth to wait for a suitable weather window. Work continued on getting the boat ready, especially sorting out the gremlins in the engine that were still troubling us. Although it was a fuel supply issue nobody had managed to find the source of the problem. eventually we removed the fuel tank for a complete clean and replaced most of the fuel system up to the engine. We finally got ourselves a reliable engine we could trust literally the day before leaving.

Since he began sailing as a child in a Mirror dinghy Alex Alley has gone on to represent England internationally and spent ten months sailing around the world in the Global Challenge 2004/5. Now Alex is aiming to break the solo non-stop around the world record. RECORD ATTEMPT

early morning on 11 December we Phil Sharp, Sean Conway and myself slipped lines in Falmouth and headed west to our start line, due west of Lands end. At 08:55.15 we crossed the line, fast reaching in 20 knots of westerly breeze and some nice helpful waves. Pixel Flyer was indeed flying. Within 24 hours of starting we were up by the Isle of Man, hitting speeds of over 20 knots. It was relentless. In the next six hours we managed to blow out our code 0 and break our dyneema mainsheet strop. It was a good job that we had been given some spare dyneema by english Braids just before we left. A quick jury rig and we were on our way again, heading towards the Mull of Kintyre. As we approached our second night at sea, the weather model had changed significantly and was now showing some unseasonably light winds off the west coast of Scotland. There was no turning back now as we were committed. however by Sunday evening we were completely becalmed, trying to coax everything out of the zephyrs of wind in the cold night air – not exactly what we wanted for a record attempt.

SCOTTISH SCENERY

Come morning, though, and we were approaching Cape Wrath. It was stunning scenery on the north west of Scotland in the limited hours of daylight, although the short days and long nights did enable us to see an array of shooting stars all

£50*

night long, as well as the Northern Lights. It was another frustrating day of lighter than expected winds but eventually we made it across the north coast of Scotland to pass the finish line off John O’Groats and thereby setting a new record time of 83hours 53minutes and 15seconds as ratified by Sail Scotland. After a day’s rest two of us began the journey home, managing to get the boat as far as edinburgh. Sailing up wind in a Class 40 in a force 7 is no fun I can tell

you. The boats are designed to sail fast downwind and the flat bottom slams incredibly hard into the chop of the North Sea. The plan is to leave the boat in Scotland until the new year when we will bring her back to Gosport and begin preparations for the next record. Follow the campaign at www.alexalley. com and get your image on the boat. Track the route taken here: https://my.yb.tl/VelocityMadeGood

Sailing Series under J.P.Morgan BAR in 2014. It worked out well. I have always wanted to race in the Cup for a British team, and it is even better that I can do it with my friends.

HOW DO YOU FEEL THE AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES 2015 SEASON WENT?

HOW DID YOU INITIALLY GET INTO SAILING?

I grew up sailing through the RYA Youth programme – I started in the Optimist class, through to the 420 and then onto the Olympic 49er. My dad was selected for the 1980 Olympics and raced in 1984 in the Tornado so he has had a pretty big influence on my sailing career. I also played rugby, cricket and hockey but sailing took priority.

TELL US ABOUT THE OTHER EVENTS YOU HAVE SAILED IN COMPETITIVELY.

When I was at university I moved into match racing. We took the Match Race University World Championship title and I was also three-time British Universities Team Race Champion. I then went on to compete in the Extreme Sailing Series, and in 2010 I won the series with the Wave, Muscat and in 2011 with Team Luna Rossa. During the last America’s Cup I competed with Prada Luna Rossa as Helmsman onboard ‘Swordfish’.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH LAND ROVER BAR?

Freddie [David Carr], Nick [Hutton] and I grew up sailing together in the youth programme and we all sailed for Luna Rossa during the last Cup. The team was looking for someone in my role as wing trimmer, and I joined the guys for a trial when they were racing in the Extreme

The series was a little bit up and down. We finished the season in third place overall, three points behind Oracle Team USA and 10 behind Emirates Team New Zealand. We are a little frustrated with where we are sitting overall but the good thing is we know what we can improve on. We had a little breakage in the Bermuda event that cost us pretty heavily, but we are still in a position to overtake the Kiwis. So heading into 2016, with our first event in Oman we are reasonably happy and confident. The ACWS is shaping up to be pretty epic next year, with as many as six events on the calendar. We have had five confirmed already.

Image: Harry KH/ Land Rover BAR We are a new team as well, so we have to get past a few more steps than some of the teams that have been established for a longer time. We have just got to work quickly and efficiently.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES LAND ROVER BAR FACE IN THE AMERICA’S CUP?

The biggest challenge is beating the Defender, Oracle Team USA because the competition stacks all the odds in their favour, which is a huge advantage for them.

WORLD SERIES HEADS TO OMAN

The Sultanate of Oman will create a rare slice of sporting history when it becomes the first country in the Middle East to host America’s Cup racing by staging the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Oman. For many of the America’s Cup sailors, including Sir Ben Ainslie, the waters off the Sultanate of Oman will be familiar territory, since Muscat

Image: Harry KH/ Land Rover BAR

WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING ALONGSIDE SIR BEN AINSLIE?

Image: Harry KH/ Land Rover BAR has been hosting high performance multihull racing every year since 2011. Near perfect sailing conditions that consistently deliver a 10 - 15 knot breeze combined with a sunny climate and warm waters have made Oman a popular destination for many Olympic Classes that have chosen to stage their World Championships at a time of year when the weather in Europe and North America limits training opportunities.

Ben is the most focused and determined man I have ever met, whether it is in the gym or in the swimming pool or on the water. He wants to win. It is inspiring to work with him, and the whole team. We want to win the Cup together. The Americas Cup Trophy in Muscat, Oman. The next event takes place in Oman this month. Image: Lloyd Images

TELL US ABOUT SAILING IN FRONT OF THE HOME CROWD IN PORTSMOUTH IN JULY.

Portsmouth was probably the best regatta I have ever done and absolutely the highlight of 2015. We won our home event - coming down the last reach with everyone cheering was a pretty special moment for us. Seeing hundreds of thousands of fans packing out Southsea Common to soak up the atmosphere and watch the regatta is something I will always remember. I hope we get as many turning up this July.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SAILORS WHO WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? I think the main thing for me was that I have absolutely loved sailing the whole way through. It became apparent that I could actually do this sport for a job and that was the dream. I worked harder because I was enjoying it all – trying new classes and boats and just getting involved wherever I could.

WHICH SAILORS / SPORT INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)? CONFIRMED 2016 AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES EVENTS n FEBRUARY 26 – 28: Muscat, Oman n MAY 6 – 8: New York n JUNE 10 – 12: Chicago n JULY 22 – 24: Portsmouth n SEPTEMBER 10 – 11: Toulon

There have been some pretty amazing athletes. I think one of my biggest moments of watching sport, just being in awe, was watching Steve Redgrave win his fifth gold medal with Matt Pinsent, James Cracknell and Ed Coode in 2000. I can remember having tingles as I was watching it. Then similarly with Johnny Wilkinson’s final drop kick in the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Moments like that capture you in no other way – and just make you want to work hard.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS? Just to thank all the readers for their support so far, we need everyone to continue to get behind the team and the challenge to bring the Cup home.

Bryher Isles of Scilly Part II

The friendly island of Bryher is a rugged yet beautiful island of vibrant contrasts located 28 miles off the Cornish coast. Just one and half miles long by half a mile wide its coast line is remarkably varied. WE left the island of Tresco after a memorable dinner at the Ruin Beach Café. Early morning at the New Inn and I look out to the trot of moorings that runs up between Tresco and Bryher. It is pretty quiet at this time of year, but magnificently blue. All visiting seafarers are invited to use the New Inn’s showers as part of the deal. You pay just £20 a night to enjoy this nirvana, including water and rubbish collection, but a visit to the New Inn is the icing on the top. Set around a courtyard that is a garden back from the shore, most rooms get an impeccable view over to Bryher and many a glorious sunset. There is a choice of pancakes or the full English – what decisions – but I need to catch the ferry to Bryher this morning to find out ‘Why the whales came’, so I go for

pancakes and do not regret it. A fluffy batch with proper crispy, streaky bacon and a good jug of maple syrup. A short, brisk stroll and I am aboard the ferry over to Anneka’s Jetty (aka Bar), so named when the enthusiastic, track-suited Radio 2 DJ took the challenge from the Islanders to rebuild this vital low water landing point.

HEADING TO HELL

Bryher is the smallest of the Scillies and whilst its east coast is sheltered the west coast faces the full brunt of the Atlantic and there is always a bit of wave watching to be done out at Hell Bay. This is where I am heading. I pop into Island Fish as I wander up the quiet lane from the quay and all is a frenzy of boxing and packing as Amanda prepares to take her stall to Tresco for the afternoon market. This family business is thriving, with father,

A delicious pastrami sandwich

daughter and husband all helping out, from the catch to the cook. I keep going, as I do not want to miss lunch, but am tempted by Bryher Gallery and the well packed village shop. Ahead of me I see a spread of low buildings and beyond this I can see waves breaking, though it is a very calm, warm day. “We all knew well enough that the west coast of the island was dangerous, far too dangerous for children,

@trescoisland @julietsgarden @ScillyTIC @radioscilly

You can not beat a pancake stack like this for breakfast

whatever the weather... At Shipman’s Head and Hell Bay there were black cliffs hundreds of feet high that rose sheer from the churning sea below. Here even on the calmest of days the waves could sweep you off the rocks and take you out to sea.” From ‘Why the Whales came’. I have arrived at Hell Bay – which clearly it is not. Everything is very quiet. I am a little late and most of the residents are out walking, sailing or visiting the other islands, so I can enjoy the art on the walls and the view from the sheltered patio. Chatting to Philip Callan, who manages the Hell Bay Hotel, he explained that the hotel quietens down in early October and shuts before half term, as there is not quite enough to do here as the days get colder and shorter. Most guests stay on Tresco and visit Hell Bay for lunch or dinner. Its reputation is superb, and I have no complaint with my pastrami sandwich, but look forward to visiting another time to try the full shebang and sample the delights of the Crab Shack.

EXPLORING THE ISLAND

I just have time to pop into the lovely little church of All Saints on the path to ‘Quay’ and am rewarded with some delightful stained glass. With a light touch on the colour it looks modern and I discover the artist’s mark of the phoenix which means it is Oriel Hicks’ work on neighbouring St Marys. Other top eating places on Bryher are Fraggle Rock, fondly referred to as ‘the pub’ and the cosy Vine Café, a top stop off for walkers in need of a sausage sarnie or afternoon tea. One of our followers reports… Yottie in the West Country: “This cafe is wonderfully old fashioned and the owner works extremely hard, seemingly on her own, constantly baking delicious cakes and meals. I do not know how she does it! The atmosphere is very relaxed so fits in perfectly with Bryher. We had coffee, tea, scones and cake which were all delicious and at a reasonable

price. The decor is unchanged – it is cosy without being fussy, with old cushions and children’s games. All very reassuring to come back to year after year. But the main thing is, of course, the food which is wonderful. Unfortunately we missed the lemon meringue pie this time but hopefully next year.” Fraggle Rock does a Friday fish & chip night, year round, and is very popular with kayakers who can come in straight off the water as it enjoys a sheltered spot just north of Bar. I need to be on the quay for 3.30 and admire the crystal clear waters as a Jet Boat whizzes over, hails me from the cabin and I jump aboard after a gaggle of school children swap places. I get back on Tresco to find a fine gaggle of shoppers at the Island Fish stall and all the lobsters gone. Never mind, I am off to the New Inn for the seafood risotto and sticky toffee pudding – and the next chapter in Why the Whales came! Why the Whales Came is a children’s story written by Michael Morpurgo and first published in 1985. It is set on the island of Bryher in the year 1914.

MARINA CHAT WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE MARINAS

THE PERFECT CATCH

BIG CATCHES We have since enjoyed many fishing trips on her doing what we like best which is fishing offshore wrecks, generally 30 miles out. I go out at least once a week - so four to six times a month. We catch anything from cod, bass, pollock, bream, plaice and the ever present dog fish. I catch for both family and friends; they get a good haul every now and again! Last year’s Fishing Show at the marina was a great idea and lots of the members of Southsea Marina angling community were involved. It was just a pity that the weather did not play ball. I look forward to being involved in this year’s event on 30 April. As well as fishing I have been a member of the Eastney Cruising Association since I was 17 and I am now 54. So I have a bit of background of sailing (mainly windsurfing and dingy) but my real passion is motorboats.

Come rain or shine, boat owner and sea angler, Tim Andrews, loves nothing more than taking to the Solent on his Powerglide V30 and exploring offshore wrecks for the perfect fishing spot. As we learn more about his passion, we find out what he looks for in a boat. I HAVE been in Southsea Marina since around 2002 when I got my first serious fishing boat, an Arvor 215 called a TimboatII. I love the area both from a fishing and boating point of view as it is very varied and holds lots of challenges: rip tides, sand banks, forts and submarine barriers. I also have lots of great friends here through both fishing and sailing. At the moment I own a Merry Fisher 530 boat but I also part own a Powerglide V30 with a good friend, which I do most of my fishing on. We bought the boat from a guy in Guernsey back in 2013 and spent six months getting her back to an orderly state.

THE DREAM BOAT It is a bit of a joke in the marina; I am forever chopping and changing in search

of the perfect vessel. I am always looking for specific requirements; enough deck space to fish from and a certain amount of comfort inside – a bit of luxury! The American Albin would probably fit that bill; I guess that would be my dream boat. I am heavily involved in most of my repairs, but I always leave the specialised jobs to the experts as it rarely pays to not do so. I tend to use my boats all year round so I do not winterise my vessels, I just take a bit more care when it is super cold and frosty. As I live not too far away if the wind is blowing or it is cold I will go and check on the boat; make sure the seacocks are all working. I do a little bit of antifoul myself but for hull polishing and so on I will use local people. This year I plan to try and keep the same boat for longer than I have in the past and hopefully get more time on the water as it is my release from all of today’s stress and strains. Are you buying a boat this year? Let us know what you are thinking of purchasing.

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS

ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2016

Bray, Windsor and Penton Hook – tranquil marinas with direct access to London and beyond.

THAMES MARINAS PENTON HOOK MARINA

BRAY MARINA

MDL Marinas has three marinas across the Thames offering great facilities, firstclass customer service and unbeatable locations. With direct access to London, plentiful cruising opportunities and superb surrounding restaurants, bars and places of interest, Thames boaters are truly spoiled. MDL’s most northerly Thames marina is Bray Marina, which is situated in a beautiful country park setting located close to Cliveden House, a National Trust property with extensive Italianate gardens and woodlands. The marina is also a short journey to the beautiful village of Cookham - home of the Queen’s Swan Keeper - who can sometimes be seen in his traditional costume. Downstream lie the historic towns and villages of Windsor, Eton and Datchet where you can find MDL’s Windsor Marina. Also located in a tranquil garden setting with a large river frontage for easy mooring, this 175-berth marina prides itself on being one of the most attractive marinas on the Thames. There are many options for a day’s cruising, with several riverside inns, stately homes and gardens to visit. MDL’s third and final Thames location is Penton Hook Marina, nestled on the banks of the River Thames. Set in 80 acres and boasting 575 berths, it is Britain’s largest inland marina and is situated on one of the loveliest stretches of the River Thames. It is close to the vibrant town of Staineson-Thames and approximately one mile downstream from Runnymede, where King John signed the Magna Carta. The marina provides first-class amenities in sheltered waters and boasts four facility buildings. There are also purpose-built pontoons for narrowboats

WINDSOR MARINA

ENTERTAINMENT & EATERIES

With a variety of entertainment on your doorstep, Bray, Windsor and Penton Hook are sociable marinas, ideal locations for river cruising and also perfect for exploring the city lights of London, the historical town of Windsor or the high streets of Egham and Richmond.

and Dutch barges, including a number of moorings for vessels up to 30 metres in length. Bray Marina, Windsor Marina and Penton Hook Marina all pride themselves on having very active yacht clubs - holding a full programme of social events and functions - as well as boat training lessons and handling competitions. In addition to each marina’s busy entertainment and activities schedule, the trio of marinas host superb on-site chandleries and classleading facilities. They are also staffed by highly trained personable teams who pride themselves on caring for your boat and your every boating need. When berthing your boat, it is important that you have peace of mind and MDL’s security is second to none. It will come as no surprise that each of the marinas have been recognised by the prestigious ‘Gold Anchor Award Scheme’ with the maximum 5 gold anchors apiece being awarded for exceptional service and facilities. All of these stunning and tranquil marinas are within a few hours cruising of each other and offer reciprocal berthing for Freedom Berthing members, which gives complimentary access to over 100 marinas across the UK and Europe.

Just some of the highlights of things to see and do include: ■ Thorpe Park - Thorpe Park is within walking distance or a short car ride away from Penton Hook, offering hours of fun and amusement for the whole family ■ Windsor Castle - A residence of the British Royal Family built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the castle was extensively remodelled by subsequent monarchs. Public tours take place in the State Apartments, which contain opulent furnishings and paintings from the royal art collection ■ LEGOLAND - With over 55 interactive rides and attractions, LEGOLAND is perfect for families visiting the marinas. You can pass your day by flying through the

treetops to escape fearsome dragons, ride the thrilling rapids with a Viking Fleet or join divers on a magical underwater adventure on Atlantis Submarine Voyage ■ Fabulous food and entertainment - There is an endless choice of restaurants, bars and theatres in and around MDL’s Thames marinas and owners and visitors will be simply spoilt for choice. Bray Marina enjoys the fantastic on-site Riverside Brasserie, which is a popular eatery for berth holders in a beautiful setting and hosts a number of annual events. In addition, Bray village has two fantastic 3 Michelin starred restaurants – The Fat Duck and the Waterside Inn. There are also plenty of options in and around Windsor and Egham too where you can dine al fresco by the water at Côte Brasserie, or discover the wonderful cuisine available at the likes of MEIMO Restaurant and Sebastians Italian. ■ Shopping - The quaint town of Marlow has a whole host of top high-street brands such as Jack Wills and White Stuff and a number of small boutiques and high-end restaurants. A perfect spot for all those looking for a great afternoon and evening out!

CRUISING

FOR seafaring guests, the marinas offer a great location for all adventurers. For those who fancy taking advantage of MDL’s network of nearby marinas, with just a four-hour cruise from Bray to Penton Hook, there are plenty of opportunities for overnight stops. Owners can cruise upstream to Windsor and the charming village of Datchet, and follow the river as far as Oxford, taking in the many waterside restaurants along the way. A downstream jaunt for the adventurous cruiser will take you to the Medway town of Chatham with its famous historic dockyard, where

“We currently cruise a Falcon 27 called Joybringer, which is a new boat for us after having had our last motorboat Venturer for almost 10 years. We moved Venturer to MDL’s Penton Hook Marina after I moved my company, CP Sound Ltd, to offices at the marina. “We’ve been at Penton Hook for about five years now and it is head and shoulders above the previous marinas that we have berthed at. It is much nicer and simpler here at Penton Hook. It is so easy to walk out on to the pontoon and to the boat. The marina also has fantastic facilities available; I am a regular customer to the trim shop who have done some really first-rate work for me on Venturer. “As well as the easy movement to and from the boat there is such a lovely atmosphere here; all the other berth

MDL has another fantastic marina, Chatham Maritime Marina. If you are attracted by the bright lights of the big city then you can cruise the tidal Thames and in around six hours arrive into Central London, where owners will be spoilt for choice.

FACILITIES

At Bray Marina there are plentiful facilities for berth holders and visitors, including superb showers, toilets and berth holder facilities. The marina offers the perfect place to unwind before you head out to see the sights of London and the surrounding area. Windsor Marina

boasts the active Windsor Yacht Club, which holds a full programme of social events along with boat training lessons and boat handling competitions. There are extensive facilities and services on-site as well as fuel, enabling you to fill up as and when you need. Offering outstanding boatyard facilities, Penton Hook hosts a 20-ton crane, trailer boat storage, boat lifting, storage ashore and two pump-out stations. It is also the designated boatyard for both Bray and Windsor marinas, and boasts excellent showers, toilets and full disabled facilities.

holders are very pleasant. Once a month the MDL marina office hosts a party for all the berth holders, which is a great way for us to catch up and to get to know each other even better. “Out on the water, Jacky and I enjoy cruising up and down the Thames, sometimes as far as Benson, near Oxford. Although our new boat Joybringer can go up to 35 knots, we rarely go above 8 knots when cruising the Thames. We have both embraced the laid back approach to boating and enjoy a slow, relaxing meander up the river. “Usually we will cruise up to MDL’s Windsor or Bray marinas over the weekend, which is very convenient as we can berth at any of MDL’s marinas at no extra cost. It fits in with our easygoing lifestyle, which suits us just fine!” Colin Pattenden

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS

Windsor Marina

As Europe’s leading marina operator, MDL Marinas is proud to offer the most comprehensive berthing package in the marketplace. The Freedom Berthing package gives owners far more than a superb berth and marina facilities. It is a passport to extra rewards, benefits and savings, such as complimentary stays at over 100 other marinas both in the UK and Europe, discounts on boatyard services, fuel at cost and unlimited super fast WiFi.

Nearly, but not quite for Plymouth Marina!

PLYMOUTH’S Mayflower Marina narrowly missed out on a hat trick after being awarded Runner-Up in the 2016 UK Coastal Marina of the Year Award. Having won the prestigious award in 2014 and again in 2015 it was fingers crossed for 2016, but it was not to be! Charles Bush, Managing Director of Mayflower Marina said “It was disappointing not to win but to be runner-up in a National competition is certainly quite an achievement and would indicate that our customer service and facilities are at a consistently high level. I would like to thank our customers for their continued support and my hardworking staff for their efforts

over the past year. Lastly, can I congratulate Lymington Yacht Haven on their win.” For more information on Mayflower Marina http://www. mayflowermarina.co.uk

The complimentary service is offered as part of MDL’s Freedom Berthing membership and will be accessible for all WiFi enabled mobile devices, offering a high-speed, low latency connection. Commenting on the new offering, Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas said: “We know from talking to our berth holders and visitors how important it is for them to have access to super fast WiFi. Whether for business or pleasure, in this day and age most of us demand and expect excellent internet access

Marinas of the Year

The 2016 Yacht Harbour Association award for UK Coastal Marina of the Year (over 250 berths) was awarded to Lymington Yacht Haven. Now in its third year, the Awards were open to Gold Anchor accredited marinas in four categories: UK Coastal, UK Inland, International and Superyacht. Marina customers were asked to vote for their favourite marina and in a display of the enthusiasm people have for their marina, there was a 48 per cent increase in votes from the 2015 awards. The increase in votes and the comments that were posted on marinaawards.com shows how much marina customers value the high levels of customer service provided in Gold Anchor accredited marinas. With more than 500 positive comments from voters, it is no wonder that Lymington Yacht Haven is sailing high as the UK Coastal Marina of the Year 2016. The family owned marina is set in a stunning location on the Lymington River off the Solent. A £1.2 million shoreside refurbishment allows berth holders and visitors to enjoy 24 hour facilities including WiFi and fuelling, luxury washrooms and laundry, and quality food and drink at The Haven Bar. Dylan Kalis, Managing Director of Yacht Havens Group, said: “We are extremely proud that we have been awarded such a prestigious accolade, along with the Five Gold Anchor Award in 2015, which is a benchmark within the industry. This award is a credit to our amazing staff and a reflection of their continual hard work and professionalism in delivering the highest level of service year-on-year, which makes Lymington Yacht Haven so worthy of both awards. I would also like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for Lymington Yacht Haven, many of who are regular visitors from our other marinas around the UK.” Winners and runners up of the prestigious awards were presented with laser etched glass trophies and framed certificates by David Perfect, Managing Director of GJW Insurance and Sarah Hanna, Chairman of The Yacht Harbour Association at the London Boat Show. www.yachthavens.com/lymington www.tyha.co.uk UK Coastal Marina of the Year 2016 (over 250 berths) ■ Winner – Lymington Yacht Haven ■ Runner up – Mayflower Marina UK Coastal Marina of the Year 2016 (under 250 berths) ■ Winner - Poole Quay Boat Haven ■ Runner up – Southampton Town Quay UK Inland Marina of the Year 2016 ■ Winner – Overwater Marina ■ Runner up – Caen Hill Marina International Marina of the Year 2016 ■ Winner – Marina de Vilamoura ■ Runner up – Saint-Quay Port d’Armor Superyacht Marina of the Year 2016 ■ Winner – IGY Yacht Haven Grand ■ Runner up – Porto Montenegro

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

FUELLING FOR SUCCESS British Sailing Team Physiologist Tim Jones provides his top tips for on-water nutrition

HAVING the right fuel for sailing is one of the things that you can control in an environment where there is so much that is out of your hands. Do not leave your energy levels or concentration at a disadvantage from not getting the right nutrients. If you are out on the water for a long time, you are going to need carbohydrates, and not just any type – complex carbohydrates are what you need. These are also known as ‘slow-release carbs’ as they absorb into your body

slowly, keeping your energy levels and cognitive function under control . Good options such as pasta, wraps and some snack bars. ‘Fast release carbs’ are sugary and can spike your blood sugar and energy levels and then they can drop just as fast (sugar crashing) resulting in poorer reaction times, tiredness and mood swings not to mention damaging your teeth - so avoid munching on sweets all day.

AVOIDING SUGAR

This means when looking at snacks for on the water you need to try and avoid the ones that have the highest amounts of sugar. You can do this by looking at food labels and checking how much sugar there is per 100g. Doing this also lets you compare snacks against one another as normally the portion sizes will differ between products.

Before you go and choose the lowest sugar snacks in the supermarket, there are some others things you need to consider. Low-sugar products can be high in fibre and/or fat, which can result in gastrointestinal discomfort or lethargy.

Diet is an important factor when it comes to training

Therefore if you have a weak stomach or the conditions are hard, you may want to shoot for a slightly higher sugar snack or something with a higher glycaemic index such as Jaffa cakes or similar. Just keep an eye on the amount of total sugar.

CONSIDER THE OPTIONS

The best thing to do is to try some different snacks away from regattas and on-water training, and always move towards the lower sugar options. If the conditions are light then you may not end up eating your snacks at all - having three balanced meals a day with plenty of water (2 -3 litres) could be enough, but it is best to have the snacks with you. Avoid eating large portions just before launching or on the water otherwise you may struggle to digest them, and most of all stay away from the sweets, apart from maybe the last race of the day to give a last ditch energy burst. LEFT: Avoid snacks with high amounts of sugar. There are many healthy options available

NIPPER

In the old sailing warships anchor ropes were huge, as much as eight inches in diameter and much too large to bend around the main capstan. Instead smaller endless ropes were used. These were led to the capstan and attached to the cable with nipping lines – so called because they nipped the ropes against the side of the cable and no awkward knots were required. Small boys were employed to do this work and inevitably they became known as the nippers.

Dame Ellen MacArthur sailed into the record books when she completed her single-handed round-the-world voyage in record-breaking time. Ellen completed the 27,000-mile voyage in 71 days and under 15 hours. In doing so she beat Francis Joyon’s 72 days, 22 hours, 54 mins and 22 secs. Before she had even finished she had already broken five records on the trip beating Joyon’s times to the Equator, the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin in Australia, Cape Horn and back again to the Equator.

IN THE DRINK BY PAUL ANTROBUS

Best of both worlds Drinking in moderation or alcohol-free drinks - we still have the choice.

JUST as we recovered from Christmas and the New Year, the government-approved pronouncements on alcohol consumption came as an early January put down. They say that limiting the number of units drunk per week by both men and women reduces the risk of cancer and liver disease. Fair enough, but is such scare-mongering in touch with the reality of the human race? Alcoholic drinks have been part of the social, ceremonial, even medicinal fabric of life since before biblical times. At All At Sea we have always counselled responsible drinking, at the same time acknowledging that part of the pleasures of sailing are sundowners in the cockpit or a run ashore to bars and restaurants. This latest government advisory is likely to remain just that - guidelines. But for those looking for an alcohol-free drink more interesting than fruit juice, help is at hand from Fentimans and its recent Dry January ideas.

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.

This family business has been making a range of traditional, natural, botanical, non-alcoholic drinks for over 110 years. They use infusing and fermenting techniques similar to those used for ales and spirits to make flavoursome soft drinks to appeal to an adult palate, ranging from ‘botanically brewed traditional’ ginger beer to Victorian lemonade. They are stocked by supermarkets such as Waitrose and Tesco for about £1.20 per 275ml bottle (but not always the full range). Their ‘mocktail’ recipes aim to deliver a more complex drink for adults. Here are a couple to get you started: Victorian Jigger – equal measures of Fentimans Victorian Lemonade and Fentimans Manderin and Seville Orange, mixed with ice and garnished with orange peel Tenderberry – Fentimans Ginger Beer, splash of grenadine juice, splash of thick cream, six strawberries, muddle all together and serve over ice. If you missed dry January, there is still February. It is a leap year but it's still two days less to go without a tipple! www.fentimans.com

YOUR FAVOURITE YACHTING BARS FOR the first time, two winners have been declared for the seventh annual Wight Vodka World’s Favourite Yachting Bar poll after what Wight Vodka says was very close voting. One was the Pier View in Cowes, a well established yachties’ favourite. The other is only a year old, Plas Heli in Pwllheli, Wales. With a new bar and restaurant, new pontoons and seven international events held there last year with sailors from 44 countries, Plas Heli seems to have impressed many of them.

The rest of the 2015 top ten were pretty much the usual suspects: ■ Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda, BVI ■ Boatyard Bar & Grill, Annapolis, Maryland, USA ■ Candy Store, Newport, RI, USA ■ Fiddler’s Green, San Diego, CA, USA ■ Pink Pony, Mackinac Island, MI, USA ■ Pirate’s Bioght, Norman Island, BVI ■ Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Hamilton Bermuda ■ Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

Remember, this is a personal, voluntary opinion poll with no pretentions to be scientifically balanced. So if your bar is not there yet, get ready to mobilise more votes for it next November when the 2016 poll begins.

SPOTTED AT THE LONDON BOAT SHOW

Chilgrove Gin founder Christopher Beaumont-Hutchings was manning the Sunsail hospitality bar to showcase the new Chilgrove vodka, having teamed up with the charter company as its official gin and vodka provider. Chilgrove has followed on from the success of a unique gin distilled from grapes rather than grains with the first vodka in the UK to be made from grapes. It has a distinctive silky smooth taste and is great with Fever Tree tonic. On the Prestige Yachts stand the chosen beverage was Herbert Hall English Sparkling White Wine. This small, owner-operated winery uses only its own grapes and the result is an excellent Brut. Current retail price is about £25; the rosé version £26.50. Alas, no reincarnation of the Guinness bar. It has been replaced by the simple open-sided Black and White bar with none of the ‘crush bar’ atmosphere of the famous Guinness bars of former boat shows. Guinness on tap, also Meantime Brewing’s (Greenwich) ‘craft’ Pale Ale - 4.3 per cent, hoppy, sharp and bright. Nice drink but a bit ‘Boat Show’ - overpriced at £2.65 for a half.
