pOsITIVe OUTLOOK fOR MaRINe INDUsTRy Exhibitors reported strong sales at January’s London Boat Show. Image: OnEdition
A new report, released at the London Boat Show by British Marine, found that the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry is posting revenues not seen since the financial crash in 2008. This is despite the Leave vote in June 2016 which had an immediate and sharp impact on marine businesses. In July businesses reported a negative outlook for the coming six months. However since then business confidence has bounced up 17 per cent. Boat manufacturers are particularly buoyant post-referendum, increasingly
driven by the superyacht sector, worth £605million, as identified in the Superyacht UK annual survey. According to research by British Marine, exporting manufacturers still accrue a net benefit from sterling’s depreciation. It has increased the purchasing power among foreign consumers and is driving demand for British products. As a result, confidence is high amongst a significant number of boat builders trading in international markets. Antony Sheriff, executive chairman of Princess Yachts, said: “Recent figures for UK yacht building from British Marine,
showing sales exceeding £3bn for the first time since 2008, reflect renewed confidence across our global markets and are testament to the craftsmanship and expertise of the nation’s maritime industry. “Orders at Princess Yachts are now at their highest levels since the global financial crisis – with record sales achieved at the recent Cannes Yachting Festival and further huge interest at the London Boat Show.” Elsewhere, with the depreciation of the pound, there appears to have been a slight increase in inbound and domestic
tourism, which has been echoed in the increasingly positive sentiment of marine tourism-related businesses. 41 per cent of hire, charter, passenger boat and other marine-related tourism businesses indicated that they were positive about the next six months when surveyed in November, compared to only 22 per cent when asked immediately following the EU referendum. British Marine and its members met the Department for International Trade to discuss what support government can give the industry. The message from exporters was that while Europe is and will remain significant, businesses are exporting to many other markets and need government backing to take advantage of opportunities to trade with the likes of China and North America. Howard Pridding, CEO of British Marine, said: “The industry remains robust – revenue is growing and we are taking on more employees. Our members’ greatest long term concern is uncertainty and we will continue to work closely with government to ensure the sector is given as much backing as possible from government especially as the Brexit negotiations begin. “Access to the single market is of course important, but member companies are keen to minimise tariff and non-tariff barriers. Members are also keen to maintain access to skilled workers from across the EU and the government needs to do all it can to make sure that any future immigration policy with the EU supports marine businesses that are ambitious to grow and export.”
aNGLO-fReNCH aGReeMeNT TO BOOsT MaRINe TOURIsM AN agreement has been made between the UK’s South West and Northern French marine businesses in a bid to boost tourism amid the uncertainties surrounding Brexit. The project aims to develop a common framework for the sustainable growth of the nautical sector in the two regions before and after Brexit. It will also enable British and French marina members to work together to share best practices and to encourage growth and future investment. British Marine South West, which represents 200 marine members in the region, and the Association des Ports de
Plaisance de Bretagne, which represents 70 marinas and ports in Northern France, signed the Memorandum of Understanding at the London Boat Show. Jonathan Fielding, Chairman of BMSW, said: “This agreement enables both regions to work closely on minimising the negative aspects of Brexit. “Together we can encourage boat owners to travel between the UK’s South West region, Northern France and the Channel Islands regardless of the final outcome of Brexit. “This new relationship will powerfully promote what we know to be the finest cruising ground in Northern Europe.”
MaINTeNaNCe wORKs Harbour maintenance dredging, originally planned for 2016, will be started this month at Cowes’ Shepards wharf marina and approaches, the town Quay mooring basin and the royal yacht Squadron basin. the works are planned to start in first week of February with a projected completion date of 16 march.

The editor, Jane Hyde, between two impressive Fairline Yachts at the London Boat Show
IT certainly has not been a quiet start to the year with lots of positivity for the coming months. It all began at the London Boat Show, which is always a fantastic way to begin a new season of boating. Visitors numbers were down – snow and travel disruptions were partly to blame – but the feedback from exhibitors was great. It was fantastic to see several MPs at the show discussing the future of the marine industry, especially after it has seen a fifth consecutive year of growth. Exhibitors were happy but we would love to know what you thought about this year’s show. One person who was otherwise occupied at the time of the London Boat Show was Alex Thompson who was undertaking an incredible comeback in the Vendée Globe to get within 30 miles of the leader with a few hundred miles to go. Although Alex was not able to beat Armel Le Cléac’h it was an incredible achievement for the
20
British sailor, including breaking his own British record of 80 days for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in a monohull. Not one to hang around, he has already announced his intention to race again in 2020. No doubt it is that kind of drive and determination that inspired Gavin Reid to take part in the last Clipper Race. With no previous sailing experience he could never have imagined his name would end up on an award alongside sailing greats like Sir Ben Ainslie and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. His YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award was well deserved and we look forward to seeing what Gavin decides to do next in his sailing career. Sir Ben Ainslie has a busy few months coming up with the Land Rover BAR team training in Bermuda ahead of the America’s Cup in a few month’s time. Previously there was no set timetable for the next America’s Cup, and so for fans of the event the news that it is to begin a two-yearly cycle will be welcomed. A number of other important changes have also been announced, including rules to reduce costs, which you can read about on page 10. Lastly, a sad farewell to Steve Sleight who recently passed away. Long-time readers of All at Sea will know that Steve was editor from 2001 – 2003. Steve was a respected figure in the marine industry as an author, sailor, boat builder and broadcaster. AMATEUR SAILOR BEATS OLYMPIAN
GAVIN Reid, 28, an amateur sailor who was born profoundly deaf, has beaten “his heroes”, Giles Scott, the Rio 2016 Gold Medalist, and Brian Thompson, Round the Island Race record holder, to be honoured as the boats.com 2016 YJA Yachtsman of the Year. The award, previously won by Sir Ben Ainslie and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, recognised Gavin’s heroic act of seamanship whilst competing as a crew member in the Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race. Gavin came to the midocean rescue of a sailor trapped at the top of the mast on another yacht, which was not competing in the Clipper Race. Gavin said: “To be named boats.com 2016 JYA Yachtsman of The Year over some of my absolute heroes of the sport, feels like an incredible honour.” Gavin has four caps for the Scottish Deaf Rugby team and has always enjoyed challenges. Like 40 per cent of Clipper Race crew, he had no previous sailing experience before embarking on his training for the 40,000nm marathon. On 5 January 2016, Gavin was racing
from Sydney to the Whitsundays with his team aboard the yacht Mission Performance when an SOS was picked up off the New South Wales coast of Australia from a yacht returning from the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The Mission Performance yacht was nearest to the stricken vessel and Gavin, who uses hearing aids in both ears, volunteered to swim between the two yachts as conditions prevented transferring alongside. He found four other crew on board, all incapacitated and unable to help their crewmate who had been tangled in halyards at the top of the mast for several hours. Gavin had become experienced in mast work during the Clipper Race and used the one remaining staysail halyard to hoist himself two-thirds of the way up the swinging mast, then climbed the rest of the way hand-over-hand to reach the crewman, untangle the lines and help to lower him down safely. Clipper Race Founder and Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said: “The Clipper Race is highly competitive but faced with
any situation where a fellow sailor on another boat was in serious trouble the crew of Mission Performance, who are fully trained with a safety first mentality, upheld the tradition of the sea that you do not hesitate to go to the assistance of another sailor in distress. “This is the pinnacle of British sailing awards and amongst the most prestigious accolades in the sailing world. I am very proud of Gavin and the entire crew.” Gavin, who quit his job as a supply chain coordinator to take part in the almost year-long Clipper Race, now wants to pursue a career in sailing. Elliott Kuzyk, aged 15, from Poole won the boats.com YJA Young Sailor of the Year Award following his victory in the 200-strong Topper World Championship In Ireland. Elliott said: “I would like to say thank you very much for this award, it was not quite how I imagined my second day of GCSE mock exams turning out! I would like to thank my parents for their continued support over the years and hopefully for the years to come.”
TRIBUTE TO STEVE SLEIGHT

IN seaRCH OF a BRITIsH wINNeR VENDéE2020VISION is a new initiative to support British sailors in yacht racing’s most challenging event - the Vendée Globe, the quadrennial singlehanded non-stop round the world race. Singlehanded offshore racing is an endurance sport that is the toughest discipline in sailing. It has created many British legends from early pioneers such as Sir Francis Chichester, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Sir Chay Blyth to contemporary figures such as Dame Ellen MacArthur, Pete Goss, Mike Golding, Sam Davies, Dee Caffari, Brian Thompson and Alex Thompson, who finished second last month in the latest edition of the race. It is a sport that was created in Britain, inspired by the early round the world record breakers and the establishment of events such as the OSTAR and the Mini Transat in the 1960s and 1970s. But since then France has completely dominated the sport. British entries in the Vendée Globe peaked in 2008-9 when seven skippers from the UK entered, but in the latest race, which set sail from Les Sables d’Olonne in November, there was just one – Alex Thomson sailing Hugo Boss. Created by yacht racing management company Whitecap and supported by Artemis Investment Management LLP, Vendée2020Vision is seeking to rejuvenate British participation in the race. It intends to do so by helping aspiring British singlehanded offshore
sailors fill in the gaps in their skill sets, both at sea and in raising funding on land, and also by approaching the problem from the opposite angle: encouraging corporate Britain to get behind its worthy initiative. In its first year, Vendée2020Vision has provided training to aspirant competitors Andrew Baker, Conrad Manning, Henry Bomby, Jack Bouttell, Lizzy Foreman (All at Sea contributor), Nikki Curwen, Robin Elsey, Sam Goodchild, Sam Matson and Will Harris, the majority graduates of the Artemis Offshore Academy. #vendée2020vision Turn the page to read more about Alex Thompson’s incredible second place in the Vendée Globe.

The arrival of Armel Le Cléac’h, skipper of Banque Populaire VIII, winner of the Vendée Globe. Image: Vincent Curutchet / DPPI / Vendée Globe. Right: Alex Thompson celebrates his second place. Image: Lloyd Images
French sailor Armel Le cléac’h, 39, won the Vendée Globe ahead of Britain’s Alex Thomson in one of the most thrilling finishes the solo round the world race has ever seen. At one point Alex fell some 800 miles behind the leader, but delivered the greatest performance of his career to get himself back in contention. however, even when Alex surged to within 30 miles of Armel with a few hundred miles to go the French sailor held strong. Armel, runner-up in the last two editions, completed the course in 74 days, three hours and 35 minutes. his time set a new record for the race, beating the previous record set by French sailor François Gabart in the 2012-13 edition by three days, 22 hours and 41 minutes. Armel took the lead within 24 hours of the race start on 6 november but had lost it to Alex by the time the
skippers, both racing on newgeneration foiling IMOcA 60s, reached the equator. Alex broke two race records on the way to the cape of Good hope, before trouble struck on 19 november. The starboard hydrofoil on his hugo Boss yacht was ripped off by an unidentified submerged object. After Armel caught Alex in the Southern Ocean the pair traded places on numerous occasions before the Frenchman established a solid lead on 3 December. From being 100nm ahead at the time of the collision, Alex fell two days behind. When trailing by nearly 1,000nm at christmas, Alex made his move after rounding cape horn. In the
24-hour period leading up to 16 January, Alex managed a world record breaking 536.8nm in 24 hours to close the gap on the Frenchman to just 78nm. The record has been confirmed by the Vendée Globe race organisation but has to be ratified by the World Sailing council. It was not enough to beat Armel Le cléac’h and after 74 days, 19 hours and 35 minutes at sea Alex reached the finish line on 20 January. In doing so he broke his own British record of 80 days for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in a monohull. Alex had been trying to become just the second Briton to win a solo, non-stop around the world yacht race. Sir robin Knox-Johnston was the first Brit, and first person to do so, after he won the forerunner to the Vendée Globe, The Golden Globe, in 1969. Sir robin Knox-Johnston said: “When you think about it, he is going four times faster than I did 48 years ago. It is like comparing the Wright Brothers and concord of course, but even so it is just remarkable the way he has kept that pressure up.” Alex, who was greeted by thousands of people who flocked to Les Sables d’Olonne on the west coast of France to witness his triumphant return, said: “It is incredible to be here in second place, particularly given the loss of my starboard foil in the early part of the race. In our sport, challenges do not get any tougher, so this is a moment I will never forget.” Just two days after finishing the Vendée Globe, Alex confirmed that he intends to enter the race again in 2020. The 42-year-old is looking to add a win to his third and second places, but only if he can put together a fully competitive programme. Alex said: “Third last time, second this time. It is obvious what we need to do. What I need to do is to have a competitive campaign to do it again and the level of commitment from my family, from my team, from my team’s families. It means we need the right funding, but the most important thing is the people and the very next thing is the funding.” www.alexthomsonracing.com / ww.vendeeglobe.org

New eRa OF MaRITIMe pOweR 2017 is set to be the year of the Royal navy as it prepares to welcome new ships to the fleet, following one of their busiest years since the end of the Cold War. Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has paid tribute to thousands of personnel involved in the wide range of tasks that the navy was engaged with in 2016. This included responding to Russian activity in the north Sea, English Channel and north Atlantic, supporting EU and nATO-led operations in the Mediterranean and Aegean, helping safeguard our overseas territories and taking the fight to Daesh by leading a US navy task force in the Gulf. Sir Michael Fallon said: “We are investing billions in growing the Royal navy for the first time in a generation with new aircraft carriers, submarines, frigates, patrol vessels and aircraft all on their way. “2017 is the start of a new era of maritime power, projecting Britain’s influence globally and delivering security at home.” At the peak of activity in 2016, naval service personnel were involved in 22 operations at home and abroad, serving on nearly 30 ships, submarines, support vessels and Fleet Air Arm squadrons – 8,325 sailors and Royal Marines in all. This pace of operations continued well into 2017. During the first quarter of this year, one-third of the Royal navy’s front-line strength will be on global operations. As well as these missions, led by the maiden voyage of Britain’s biggest ever warship, the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, a raft of new ships will either commence build, be launched or be delivered to the fleet as part of plans to expand the size and strength of the Royal navy to meet its growing commitments around the world.

Key milestones in 2017 include: n HMS Queen Elizabeth will sail from Rosyth, ready to conduct sea trials in the summer and debut in Portsmouth later in the year n Her younger sister HMS Prince of Wales will enter the water for the first time in the summer as work on her continues and is due to be formally named in the autumn n Design and manufacture will begin on the multi-million pound Crowsnest, the early-warning ‘eyes in the sky’ system for the helicopters that will protect the new carriers n In the summer, steel will be cut on the first of eight Type 26 frigates in Glasgow
n The first of four Tide-class tankers, RFA Tidespring – crucial for supporting the new aircraft carriers – will arrive from South Korea in the spring to undergo UK customisation work; n In the spring the first of the navy’s five next-generation patrol ships, HMS Forth will begin her sea trials n The fourth Astute Class submarine will enter the water for its commissioning phase in spring; n The keel for the seventh and final Astute-class submarine – as yet unnamed – will be laid in 2017 as work continues apace on the fifth and sixth, HMS Anson and HMS Agamemnon in Barrow. n The opening of the first permanent Royal navy base East of Suez in nearly half a century
wORLD ReCORD BID DeLaYeD AlAn Priddy has confirmed that Team Britannia will now launch their round the world record bid in October, a year after the original launch date. The decision comes after two technical issues were discovered in December, both of which have now been resolved. This followed last autumn’s problem with the two stern hull plates, which also delayed the record bid.
The revolutionary 80ft eco-boat is still expected to be launched in the spring, before undergoing an extensive programme of sea trails and visits to events supporting the project’s sponsors and partners. To complete the record attempt the boat must pass through the Suez and Panama Canals and start and finish in the same place.
The world record authorities, UIM, have approved Team Britannia’s proposed route, which will start in Gibraltar and call at Puerto Rico, Manzanillo, Honolulu, Guam, Singapore, Oman and Malta to take on fuel. For more information about the boat and the record attempt visit the All at Sea news pages. www.teambritannia.co.uk

STRONG SALES AT BOAT SHOW
PACKAGE INCLUDES: THE 2017 London Boat Show drew to a close amongst a backdrop of world launches, celebrities and strong sales being reported. However high levels of disruption across the travel networks coupled with snow had an unavoidable effect on visitor numbers, which were five per cent down across the 10 days. The show came at a time when the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry has been high on the government’s agenda. The show welcomed Industry Minister Jesse Norman MP, Trade Minister Mark Garnier MP and Tracey Crouch MP, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Heritage. British Marine took the opportunity to discuss the support the £3.01 billion industry needs from government on issues such as skills and exports. A host of well known names also attended including Joanna Lumley, HRH The Princess Royal, sailors Dame Ellen MacArthur, Helena Lucas MBE, Dee Caffari MBE, Saskia Clark MBE, Sir Robin KnoxJohnston and Sir Keith Mills. Despite the lower number, there were positive reports from exhibitors: Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas, said: “The London Boat Show has been a great start to what promises to be a very
exciting year for MDL, which will see us unveil our transformed Ocean Village marina in Southampton. An absolute highlight of the show was a visit to our stand from HRH Princess Anne, where we shared industry insight and discussed MDL’s ongoing evolution. The show also saw two of our marinas recognised in the Marina of the Year Awards, which was a fantastic way to close another brilliant London Boat Show.” Russell Currie, Managing Director at Fairline, said: “Fairline Yachts has had a very successful London Boat Show, achieving a sales turnover of £4million on the first day of trading alone. “We also had productive meetings with the UK’s Trade Minister, Jesse Norman and our local MP, Tom Pursglove. The Minister was very supportive of Fairline and the boat building industry as a whole.” Scott Farquharson, General Manager at Sunsail, said: “London Boat Show 2017 was an unprecedented success for Sunsail, with an exceptional number of visitors to the stand who were interested in our offerings for the coming year – they took particular interest in the new bespoke rum tasting flotilla in the British Virgin Islands (turn to page 29 to read more) and a new flotilla route at our Palma base in Mallorca.”

BRITISH Marine welcomed International Trade Minister Mark Garnier to the London Boat Show to meet with British Marine members and exhibitors to discuss further trade opportunities. Mark Garnier said: “The London Boat Show is an iconic event that provides a vital platform to showcase the very best of British marine engineering and manufacturing. “Our UK marine industry is world class, with the superyacht and leisure marine sector alone generating over £895 million each year, almost a third of total UK marine export revenue. The Department for International Trade will continue to work with
British Marine to support this sector by helping exporters realise their international potential.” Howard Pridding, British Marine’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Member companies have taken the chance to further the Minister’s understanding of the strength of this £3.01bn industry, which has just announced a fifth consecutive year of growth. “Our industry has a strong export record and I welcomed the opportunity to brief the Minister at a time when the government is developing an industrial strategy and to further discuss how we can work collaboratively with government to continue this export success.”

Vision for AmericA’s cup FROM COVER… The current competitors in the America’s Cup have agreed a vision for the future of the event that would see long-sought stability and continuity in the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport. Five of the six current competitors and their respective yacht clubs have already signed the framework agreement: ORACLE TEAM USA, Artemis Racing, Team France, Land Rover BAR and SoftBank Team Japan. In addition, several prospective America’s Cup teams have been briefed and have expressed interest in becoming challengers. The framework agreement and agreed future protocol binds the signatories to deliver the 36th America’s Cup and the 37th America’s Cup under certain terms. For example, the America’s Cup will be on a two-yearly cycle for AC36 (2019) and AC37 (2021). The America’s Cup World Series will start, at the election of the defender, as soon as Q4 2017. Venues, sponsors and media partners will be approached over the next six months to secure up to 12 international events over the next two years. The first year of the America’s Cup World Series will be raced in AC45F foiling catamarans – the same boats used in the present event. The second year will see a transition to the America’s Cup Class

boats, the same technically sophisticated class of boats raced in Bermuda in 2017 (with a slight rule modification to extend the wind range in which they can race to 4 to 26 knots). In addition, to reduce costs, teams will not be permitted to build, test or train on AC45 surrogate boats as they have in the current cycle.
In further America’s Cup news, the 12 teams of sailors aged 19 – 25 invited to compete in the 2017 Red Bull youth America’s Cup in Bermuda have been announced. An extensive trials process has taken place to identify the teams that will compete alongside the six affiliated to the full America’s Cup teams. Over 20 have
registered, and the final six teams have been confirmed, making a total fleet of 12 to compete using the AC45 foiling catamarans. The Red Bull youth America’s Cup gets underway in Bermuda with pool A and B qualifiers on 12 – 16 June, followed by the finals scheduled for 20 – 21 June. GIpSy Moth IV has returned to her home at Buckler’s Hard for the winter, where visitors will be able to climb on board for a tour to learn more about her recordbreaking history. 51 years ago, Sir Francis Chichester set sail on the Beaulieu River to become the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe. Gipsy Moth IV is on show at the bottom of the High Street, where Sir Francis originally kept her before setting sail on his epic voyage. Visitors will be able to chat to the crew about Gipsy Moth’s amazing story
when she opens to the public on 18 – 19 February and 14 – 17 April. After her return from her voyage Gipsy Moth IV was initially preserved alongside Cutty Sark at Greenwich but, in need of restoration by the beginning of the century, was sold for £1 and a gin and tonic (Sir Francis Chichester’s favourite tipple) to the UK Sailing Academy. Camper & Nicholson, her original boat builder in Gosport, carried out the £400,000 refit before a further dramapacked round-the-world voyage was undertaken for educational purposes. When Gipsy Moth IV went up for
sale again, she was bought by business partners Eileen Skinner and Rob Thompson, whose aim was to keep her in the UK and to inspire a new generation with visits on board. They have donated her to the Gipsy Moth Trust. Eileen Skinner said: “Gipsy Moth IV has been looking for a new home and we are thrilled to announce that she has moved to her original home of Buckler’s Hard on the Beaulieu River.” plans to celebrate the anniversary of the homecoming to Buckler’s Hard in September 2017 are underway. www.bucklershard.co.uk

ROund the world yachtsman Alex Alley has set another sailing world record. (subject to ratification by WSSRC). The Solo Round the Isle of Wight record has been added to Alex’s Length of Britain record set last year. At 0533 on 2 January Alex crossed the Royal Yacht Squadron start line, heading for the needles. The forecast 30 knots of wind were yet to materialise and progress to the iconic landmark was slower than hoped, but then it was time to put in a gybe and head for the southernmost tip of the
island at St Catherine’s Point. By now the wind was up to forecast and Alex and Pixel Flyer were ploughing through the steep over falls at over 13 knots. Alex soon crossed the finish line after 6 hrs 20 mins 32 secs, setting a new world record. This was part of training for Alex as he prepares to challenge the Solo non-Stop Around the World 40’ record next year in his crowdfunded Class 40. S
hock may be the result of severe pain, injury, allergy, infection, fluid loss or medical conditions such as heart attack. It may happen at any time during an emergency resulting in unconsciousness and death if not managed immediately. How to recognise shock: • Is the casualty pale, cold and clammy? • Drowsy, confused, agitated or dizzy? • Thirsty, nauseated or vomiting?
• Breathing fast and shallow? • Pulse fast and weak? Any of these may indicate shock. Lay the casualty down flat on their back and raise their legs if the injury allows this. This will help blood flow to the core body organs. Do not move the casualty unless they are in danger as this may worsen the shock. Protect them from the elements. Cover the casualty to prevent them losing heat but do not over warm them. If possible lie them on something, rather
than directly on to a cold deck. Constantly reassure the casualty and try to keep them comfortable. Loosen tight clothing at the neck and waist to aid breathing. Moisten their lips but do not allow them to eat or drink. This is likely to cause vomiting and they may choke. Deal with the cause of the shock and monitor the casualty. (see Casualty Assessment in November 2016 All at Sea).
Loosen tight clothing at the neck and waist to aid breathing
Next month we will be looking at what to do when someone is bleeding.
Splash proof and ring bound, First Aid Companion is a handy reference guide covering all the key topics surrounding first aid afloat. The book contains all the topics to be featured in this series, plus more, and although it should not be seen as a replacement for completing a first aid course, it could really help to make the difference if you find yourself in a potentially harmful or life-threatening situation at sea.

Every four years World Sailing publishes new Racing Rules for Sailing, with the latest version coming into force on 1 January. Everyone who races a sailboat needs to be aware of the rules and their rights and obligations on the water. The Rules in Practice takes you through the key
situations that occur repeatedly on the race course showing, from the point of view of each boat in turn, what you may, must or cannot do. The latest rule changes are highlighted, along with their impact on you as a sailor.

It provides a fascinating insight into the linked up waterways as well as the isolated cuts and quiet waters that may not be fully navigable by larger craft. Stuart Fisher looks at every aspect of the canals - their construction, rich history, stunning scenery, heritage, incredible engineering, impressive architecture and even their associated folklore, wildlife and art. This third edition has been revised to reflect the ever-changing landscape of Britain’s canals and includes many new colour photographs to help bring it to life.

Two students learning the English language were studying for their next test, and the major topic was about time. On their way to school they were practicing. “When the day after tomorrow is yesterday,” said Priscilla, “then ‘today’ will be as far from Sunday as that day was which was ‘today’ when the day before yesterday was tomorrow!” On which day of the week did they have this conversation?
This Month 48 Years Ago… 6 February, 1969 During the Sunday Times Golden Glove Race French sailor Bernard Moitessier abandoned the race while in a strong position to win and decided to continue sailing instead. He had been making good progess and reached Cape Horn on 6 February but was becoming increasingly disenchanted with the race. Despite being predicted to be first back Moitessier simply continued sailing saying:“I am continuing nonstop because I am happy at sea.”

ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2017 It comes with central heating, hot and cold water, telecommunications systems and all the modern conveniences you would expect from a luxury apartment. Some of the optional extras include a log fire and additional television units. The design is fully flexible; one of the bedrooms can be built as an office whilst the interior, including furnishings, worktops, kitchens and flooring, can all be customised. Outside, the boat is equipped with an al fresco dining area at the rear and there is a sun-deck area on the roof. A propulsion unit can also be fitted for those who would like to experience the adventure of travelling Britain’s picturesque canals and waterways.
LUXURY LIVING How do you live in a luxury apartment in the heart of London for just £300,000? Alex Prindiville has found a way.
W
hen Alex Prindiville struggled to find a suitable property to buy near his Limehouse Marina supercar showroom he came up with a revolutionary solution. Alex gave up his search for bricks and mortar and instead commissioned master boat builders to construct a floating apartment – a 1,000 sq ft, two-bedroom luxury dwelling, delivered within four months of order.
“I always thought the idea of living on a boat was romantic, and my thoughts originally turned towards a Sunseeker-type luxury yacht,” Alex explained. “But whilst they look very sexy, I quickly realised they are designed for the sea, and internally the amount of space and layout does not make them practical to live on. “I also looked at traditional large barges and houseboats, but found that everything on the market was a bit tired and not particularly well thought out.”
It cost Alex £300,000 fully furnished, a fraction of the price he would have paid to buy an apartment in central London. Permanent mooring costs are typically £10,000 - £13,000 or you can buy a £700 annual canals mooring licence, which allows you to stay in the same location for two weeks at a time. Alex said: “The floating apartment offers some experiences that simply cannot be captured with traditional bricks and mortar. “When you are standing inside, the port-holes and water are at eye-level. The light shimmering off the water is magical and you have got a fantastic outside living area for entertaining guests. “You can live in some of the most desirable parts of any city with a waterfront, with the freedom to go up and down the river or the canals, and you have all the benefits of a luxury apartment.”
UP TO THE CHALLENGE Live in central London for a fraction of the cost
So Alex used a boat builder to create his dream space and he was so pleased with the result that he decided to start Prindiville Marine.
FLOATING APARTMENT
Constructed with a hand-crafted ‘Sheffield Keel’ hull, each wide-beam vessel is built as a completely new, purpose-built unit. The configuration provides a fully functional kitchen, bathroom, living room and two bedrooms.
AFFORDABLE LIVING
The boat has a spacious and luxurious feel
What makes it unique is the way on board space and storage has been maximised – a focus Alex admits proved tricky during the design stages. “My background is in manufacturing and engineering, and I was personally involved in much of the design of the boat. “How do you maximise the storage space on a boat that has approximately 1,000 square feet? It was very challenging. “There were hours and hours of reconfiguring the design. Yet from that process we have managed to develop an apartment that is incredibly spacious.” There are already has plans to produce a number of other versions of the boat. This includes a sea-faring version for longer trips and a larger vessel with three to four bedrooms. www.prindivillemarine.com

USING VISUALISATION In 2015 Lizzy Foreman took part in the Mini Transat and hopes to race in the Vendee Globe one day. In this series the experienced racer takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the challenges these men and women face. This month Lizzy looks at the role of visualisation in improving performance. It is now widely accepted that to achieve your true potential in sport, it is essential to train mentally as well as physically. In the July 2016 issue of All At Sea, I discussed the importance of being able to balance the rational and emotional mind in order to cope with environmental, physical, competitive and personal stressors while out sailing and racing, a skill known as mental toughness.
this month, I discuss the role of visualisation in improving your performance on the water. Visualisation is a skill that allows you to use your thoughts, reactions and emotional sensations to your advantage in high-pressure situations. Visualisation can be used for: n training and rehearsal, to improve skill level in boat handling and tactics n Psyching up for a race or training session
A Surfers Against Sewage beach clean. Image: Chris McClean
n Building confidence in high-pressure situations (such as on the start line, mark roundings, leading the fleet) n Recovering from a mistake (allowing you to stay focused in the present) n Relaxation when feeling anxious n Recovering from an injury the idea of visualisation is to mentally rehearse a process (such as tacking) rather than an outcome (winning a race). Mental rehearsal of a perfect performance not only consolidates learning but acts as a confidence boost – allowing you to react more quickly and efficiently in those high pressure situations.
How To VIsuaLIse
Lizzy uses visualisation to her advantage when racing
All AT SeA AUGUST 2012
there are two types of visualisation: internal and external. Both can be focused on a past performance or imagination of a future success. Internal visualisation requires you to visualise a skill or event from your own perspective, as if you were sailing your boat. this is the view you would

see if wearing a go-pro on your head or chest. External visualisation requires you to visualise the skill or event from somebody else’s perspective; this would be the view seen from a coach boat or spectator. Visualisation is a skill which can be developed with a few minutes’ practice each day: n In a quiet area, focus on your breathing by taking a few slow, deep breaths n Begin to imagine how you will perform during a certain process or situation n Focus on performing successfully; re-enforcing correct technique n Rehearse the same thing several times
n Engage as many senses as possible n try speeding things up and slowing them down n Imagine performing the same process in a competitive environment, incorporating any coping strategies you may need to deal with emotional stressors Watching videos of professional sailors performing a maneouvere can help you to re-enforce the use of correct technique in your own boat. Good luck. You have now got an excuse to day dream! Lizzyracing.com References: Mental and Physical Fitness for Sailing by Alan Beggs, John Derbyshire and John Whitmore thefinalbeat.com

GREEN FOCUS
TAKING CENTRE STAGE The work of The Green Blue extends beyond the UK sharing knowledge and ideas with businesses and organisations internationally. Dan Reading, Green Blue Sustainability Officer
B
efore Christmas I had the pleasure of attending several conferences both as a delegate and speaker. There were lots of interesting topics discussed as well as organisations taking steps towards achieving their sustainability targets, and there were even new products that can help reduce boats’ environmental impact. To kick things off I attended five regional RYA affiliate conferences where we met with sailing clubs and associations across the UK. This was an excellent opportunity for us to advise clubs on topics ranging from building new clubhouses to implementing biosecurity plans.
WORLD SAILING CONFERENCE
Next was a trip to Barcelona for World Sailing’s annual conference and launch of their sustainability strategy. The newly rebranded international governing body of the sport set out their objectives for the next few years: ■ Protect and enhance sailing’s waters and the wider water environment ■ Promote research into the impact of sailing on the environment ■ Encourage a robust approach to sustainability across the sport and its supporting affiliated
■ Minimise World Sailing’s carbon footprint and promote resource efficiency across the sport ■ Create a sound economic base for World Sailing and the sport ■ Provide and promote safe and collaborative working environments ■ Develop diverse and inclusive operations, promoting sailing in an open and accessible way to increase participation ■ Communicate the benefits and importance of sustainability and facilitate stakeholder engagement in the delivery of this strategy A large room was filled with delegates from all sailing disciplines ranging from Olympic gold medallists to dinghy manufacturers discussing the strategy and The Green Blue is looking
Carrying out an environmental audit at Port Vell
forward to helping World Sailing achieve its objectives where we can. Whilst in Barcelona I was invited to carry out an environmental audit and appraisal of Superyacht Marina Port Vell. Already boasting several environmental awards, the marina management were keen to discuss other ways in which they could become a world leader in environmental mitigation; after all, when you are dealing with perfection, there is no place for pollution.
SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE
After Barcelona was a trip to Amsterdam where there were two conferences and a trade show. To kick things off the Sustainability in the Marine Industry conference explored the concept of applying circular economy techniques to boatbuilding as well as types of composite materials. Delegates discussed what was happening in other countries and it was interesting to hear that in France an Eco Tax is being implemented in 2018 for new boats, but quite how this is going to be spent remains to be seen. There were some really interesting statistics at this conference, particularly from Boatshed founder Neil Chapman. On average boats are owned for three to seven years, cost 18 per cent of the value to keep and maintain and on average are used for 11 days of the year.
BRITISH PAVILION AT METS
The next few days were spent at METS, which is the largest marine trade show in the world. It is so big that the show could fit both the London and Southampton boat shows in it with space to spare. Whilst you cannot buy a boat you could buy every conceivable part of a boat a hundred times over. From electric engines to glow in the dark rope, this is the place to come to see new innovation and products from across the world. Of course the British Pavilion, which contains British exhibitors, is one of the biggest with over a hundred British Marine members showing their wares. Here I managed to catch up with the Seabin project. This is an idea that caught a lot of people’s imagination, going viral online with over 400 million people watching their video on YouTube (https:// youtu.be/tiy7WQYQyhY). The idea is a small floating bin to be placed in marinas which, using a solar powered pump, can essentially filter and catch plastic. They are hoping to be installing them around the world from May.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Finishing off the trip I spoke at the International Council for Marine Industry Associations World Marina Conference. This is a biennial gathering of international marina designers, managers and developers. Here I was presenting on environmental legislation and best practice for reducing the environmental impact of a marina. Hopefully 2017 will see the launch of the Clean Marina programme in the UK to sit alongside the marina rating Gold Anchor Scheme. www.thegreenblue.org.uk

DINGHIES AT THE PALACE What can you expect to find at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2017?
adventurers to world class coaches. Here are some of the highlights…
RYA SUZUKI MAINSTAGE
Dinghy cruising is fast becoming increasingly popular with those who either do not want to race their dinghy or want the best of both worlds. On the Suzuki Main Stage visitors to the show will be inspired by a record breaking Laser voyage as Gary ‘Ted’ Sargent shares his experience sailing single-handed around the coast of Ireland for his One Wild Ride charity challenge. 42 days, 1,750 kilometres, four capsizes and zero breakages after leaving Schull in West Cork, Gary sailed back into port triumphant. There is no doubt foiling continues to capture everyone’s imagination from the 72ft America’s Cup machines hurtling round the Solent to the growth of the International Moth class, the development of foiling catamarans and everything else that is growing up around this. Design innovators Alan Hillman and Mike Lennon will be amongst the top sailors who will share their secrets of foiling and where it is heading and how you can get started. Strap yourselves in and enjoy the ride with the Foiling into the Future talk on the Suzuki Mainstage. Historian, and All at Sea contributor, David Henshall will be taking us back in time to discover how some of the most iconic dinghies were created with his talk on Dinghy Design Development and Clive Grant, powerboat trainer to the army, returns to the show to provide essential rescue tips for modern dinghy classes
INSPIRE THE WHOLE FAMILY
The show is full of free activities to entertain and inspire the whole family. Younger visitors can buzz around collecting the clues and stickers in the famous Dinghy Show treasure hunt and be in with a chance to win fantastic prizes. You can also experience the feeling of being out on the water by jumping on one of the interactive sailing simulators or putting your trapezing technique under the watchful eyes of an instructor on the RYA Magic marine trapeze rig.
GET YOUR TICKETS
Advance tickets are available at a special discount rate of £10 for RYA members and £12.50 for non-members. RYA affiliated clubs can also take advantage of a special ticket price of £10 when booking 10 tickets or more. Two children go free with each paying adult as well. You can buy tickets by calling the ticket hotline on 0844 858 9069 or at www.dinghyshow.org www.facebook.com/ryadinghyshow www.twitter.com/dinghyshow #dinghyshow

T
here is no better place to prepare for the season ahead than the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show in association with Yachts and Yachting, brought to you by the RYA. Over the weekend of 4 - 5 March, Alexandra Palace will once again be transformed into a world of dinghy sailing. Whether you are a racer, cruiser or just getting started, you will find all you need to know, and all the kit you may need to purchase at the world’s only show dedicated exclusively to dinghy sailing.
WHAT IS IN STORE?
Olympic and Paralympic medal winning duo Mark Covell and Helena Lucas will be 2017 show comperes.
Mark, who originally trained as a traditional boat builder, has worked in the marine industry and competitively sailed boats all his adult life, winning a silver medal in the Sydney Games with Ian Walker. After spending two years in Auckland with GBR Challenge, sailing in the America’s Cup, Mark now reports and commentates on high profile sailing events including the Louis Vuitton Cup in Valencia, San Francisco and the Volvo Ocean Race. Mark said: “I am very excited to be involved in the show. Small boat sailing is where we all start and whether you want to go on to crew super yachts, compete at the Games or race at your local sailing club, dinghy sailing can take you anywhere and that is what the show is all about.”
Commodore
Helena Lucas made history claiming 2.4mR Paralympic gold at London 2012 becoming the first ever female winner of the open 2.4mR class and Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing gold medallist. She secured her second Paralympic podium position winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Games. Helena said: The RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show is the highlight of the dinghy sailor’s year. A chance to catch up with sailing friends, take advantage of some amazing offers and discover some new classes. There is a huge range of advice on offer throughout the show. Over in the coaching area do not miss the chance to get involved in interactive sessions that can help you improve your sailing whether you are racing or cruising. Sessions include communication and roles in the boat, sailing basics and boat fit boot camp. We also see some familiar faces returning to the show with World Sailing International Judge Chris Watts back to help you get to grips with the new Racing Rules of Sailing that came into effect on 1 January, including the RYA’s new rules app. Do not miss the chance to have your rig tuning questions answered by sailmaker Michael McNamara who returns with his hugely popular coaching session on how to set up your rig for various conditions using a fully-rigged RS200.

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A with Alistair Dickson, RYA Director of Sport Development.
WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT AT THE SHOW THIS YEAR?
HOW DID YOU GET INTO SAILING? When I was young my family moved from Aylesbury to North Wales and my dad got me involved in the local sailing club.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SAILING?
I love the diversity of the sport and the adventure. It grows with you and there is always something new to experience.
WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE RYA SUZUKI DINGHY SHOW?
I manage the RYA Sport Development Team who organise the show with invaluable support from our title sponsors and associate partners. From planning the theme, artwork and speakers to booking the exhibitor space, promoting the tickets and making sure the show runs smoothly from start to finish.
This year’s show will once again see Alexandra Palace transformed into a haven for dinghy sailors providing everything you need to get the new season started with the latest kit, hundreds of dinghies old and new plus talks and coaching sessions from world class sailors. Look out for the foiling features around the show including the display in Palm Court. Olympic and Paralympic medallists Mark Covell and Helena Lucas are new hosts for the 2017 show and will be welcoming a fantastic range of world-class speakers from cruising adventurers to racing champions. Visitors can also take part in the interactive coaching sessions and there are heaps of free activities for the whole family.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PREPARE FOR THE SHOW?
I think it is fair to say that there is not really a time when we are not working on the Dinghy Show. Once the show has taken place we immediately evaluate what worked well and what we want to make better and then planning begins for the year ahead.
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN CREATING A SUCCESSFUL SHOW?
There are many challenges, one of which is keeping the costs down for our visitors and exhibitors. The RYA do not make a profit and the show is run as a service to its members, affiliated clubs and class associations and to the sport as a whole, so this is something that is important to us.
Choosing the right time of year can be challenging too. The Dinghy Show currently happens right at the beginning of the sailing season, but weather has made travel conditions tricky in the past.
THE RYA SUZUKI DINGHY SHOW IS 65 YEARS OLD. WHAT HAS BEEN THE SECRET TO ITS SUCCESS? It is the only show in the world dedicated to dinghy sailing, which is something we are very proud of. There are many visitors who have grown up going to the show and it is a fantastic place to catch up with sailing friends and to celebrate everything we love about the sport. The buzz that the show has is something really unique.
HOW HAS THE SHOW CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
It has certainly changed a lot since the very beginning in 1952 when it started as The Build Your Own Dinghy Exhibition and Conference before becoming the Sailboat and Windsurf Show and eventually the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show, as it is known today. Over the years the show has grown with a wider variety of exhibitors from commercial organisations to class associations.
DO YOU WORK ON OTHER EVENTS FOR THE RYA?
RYA Push the Boat Out, which takes place from 13 - 21 May, will see sailing clubs and centres across the country open their doors and offer free or low cost sailing sessions for anybody to come and have a go. We also have the OnBoard programme for youngsters and Sailability which offers opportunities for people with disabilities to get out on the water.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
Many sailors have inspired me over the years. As an ex Laser sailor I looked up to Sir Ben Ainslie, Ian Percy and Ed Styles whilst I was young and now I am inspired by adventurous sailors like Alex Thompson.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?
Do not forget to get your ticket to the show, taking place over the weekend of 4 - 5 March. Tickets are available at www.dinghyshow.org.uk.

RoUND thE NAB A well-known landmark in the Solent, the Nab tower has quite a story to tell.
The Nab Tower before its refurbishment. Image: Trinity House
“Once the tower had finally settled on to the seabed, it was clear that there was a pronounced list to the north-east”
“Round the Nab…. And then the Warner, outer Spit and Blockhouse Corner.”
S
ung to the tune of the Welsh hymn Cym Rhonda, it is a popular story that was sung by wartime submariners returning after a successful patrol. It charts the main marks that led submarines returning back into the Eastern Solent to their base at HMS Dolphin at Haslar. The big coincidence is that the leading mark, the Nab Tower, was actually built back in the latter days of the First World War as part of a major anti-submarine defence project. SUBMARINE DEFENCE As the U-Boat menace moved into unrestricted attacks on merchant shipping, even the adoption of the convoy system did little to stem the
frightful loss of shipping to submarine attack. With losses running at over 12 ships a day something had to be done. The North Sea would be barred by a 270 mile long minefield of some 70,000 mines while a plan was conceived to construct a number of huge concrete structures that would be sunk into the seabed in the narrows between Dungeness and Cap Gris Nez. The eight semi-submerged towers would then be linked by lines of heavy netting, with just a closely monitored ‘gate’ in the middle that would effectively close off the English Channel to the outbound marauding U-boats. As a priority project, over 3,000 workmen were tasked to construct the 10,000 tonne towers at Shoreham. The first was already complete and a
second tower was under construction when, on 11 November 1918, the guns fell silent as the Armistice took effect. RECYClED toWER This second floating fort would be dismantled for scrap. However for the first tower a use would be found. It would be a ready-made replacement for the lightship positioned on the Nab Rock that was a hazard to shipping as it threaded its way up into the Solent for the two huge ports at Southampton and Portsmouth. On Sunday 12 September 1920, the floating structure was towed away from Shoreham by tugs and out into the Channel. Once in position at the Nab, some 11 miles south of Portsmouth and four miles east of
the island, the valves were opened on the floating base, which then flooded, allowing the tower to slowly settle down onto the seabed. However, the best laid plans can sometimes go awry and this was a classic. Once the tower had finally settled on to the seabed, it was clear that there was a pronounced list to the north-east. All ChANgE FoR thE NAB Even before the outbreak of WW II the lighthouse keepers on the Nab Tower had been joined by a number of soldiers who were manning a set of sound ranging equipment that gave an early warning of any inbound air raids heading for the South Coast. Once hostilities commenced, these were augmented by a number of Bofors anti-aircraft guns that were credited with shooting down a number of inbound raiders. With the return to peace, life on the Nab settled down for the three lighthouse keepers who maintained the light working month long shifts. Life on the Nab, though a bit smelly, was spacious, with the keepers having the luxury of a room to themselves. By the 1980s, all around the UK coast, Trinity House were replacing the lighthouse keepers with automated
stations, and in 1983 the Nab would follow suit and become unmanned and fully automated. It was just as well the tower was unmanned, for despite the brilliance of the light, which can be seen up to 12nm away, one night in November 1999, the Dole America, a large cargo ship loaded with bananas, somehow managed to ram the lighthouse itself. Although over £300,000 worth of damage was done to the Nab Tower, the Dole America came off much worse and was only saved from sinking by being run on to a sandbank. REFURBIShMENt In more recent times the Nab Tower needed a top to seabed makeover, with new equipment fitted, the helicopter pad reinforced and the old steelwork that surrounded the tower removed (that some said made the Nab look like “a gas works that had run away to sea”). Apart from the occasional visitor, submarines are no longer based at Portsmouth and like the lighthouse keepers of the Nab, they have become a part of our maritime history. But the Nab Tower itself remains a beacon for commercial traffic and cross channel yachtsman alike, telling them that the sheltered waters of the Solent and their journey will soon be at an end.

T
his year marks 50 years of operation for luxury British boat builder, Fairline, and 2017 is set to be a year of celebration for the brand.
It was kick-started by the launch of a beautiful, hard-back commemorative book in the brand’s honour at the London Boat Show. The book includes anecdotes from notable Fairline owners, key Fairline personnel, heritage images of some of the first Fairlines ever made, key moments in the brand’s history and tells the story of Fairline’s first 50 years. Throughout this year of ‘Golden Moments’ for the British boat builder, customers and dealers will be given exclusive opportunities to create and celebrate a whole year of new Golden Moments, culminating in the second volume of the commemorative book due to be launched at the end of the year. Russell Currie, Managing Director at Fairline Yachts, comments: “Fairline Yachts has had a very successful start to our year of Golden Moments, achieving a sales turnover of £4m at the London Boat Show on the first day of trading alone! We continued to sell boats throughout the show and were impressed by the high calibre of clients attending. “Visitors to the stand were pleased to see Fairline back and have been extremely positive, particularly regarding the quality of the boats we are producing. The initial details of the forthcoming Targa 43 Open, which is launching in spring 2018, have been very well received and more details will be released shortly.
“Later the same month at Boot Dusseldorf, we saw the launch of Fairline’s newest model, the Squadron 53 (pictures top right). Visitors from across the globe had been eagerly anticipating the launch of this model at the show and it did not disappoint! “Guests at the launch commented on the beautiful, considered design of the Squadron 53, with its fantastic detailing and features such as the aft sunpad and extensive cockpit seating space – both very rare to see on a flybridge model. The visitors added that the stunning quality, fit and finish helps to set Fairline Yachts apart. With custom layouts already designed and engineered to suit every boating region, we are confident that the Squadron 53 is going to be an incredibly popular addition to Fairline Yachts’ impressive portfolio.” With Fairline’s future secured and innovative products being designed and created throughout the year, 2017 is set to be one of Fairline’s best yet. One of the year’s most eagerly anticipated events is the launch of the first fully Alberto Mancini designed Fairline Yacht, the Targa 63GTO, at Cannes Yachting Festival. t s e b s SOUTHBOURNE e t i b
ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2017
Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.
Discovering the delights of Dorset’s Southbourne, situated close to Christchurch Harbour.
Pontoons at Christchurch Harbour

S
outhbourne might not have a marina but there is a lovely beach, and it is only a few miles from Christchurch Harbour. If you keep your boat in this area Southbourne is well worth the short trip, by foot, bike or bus, as the place is positively buzzing with exciting new food possibilities, alongside some good ol faithfulls, such as Deli Rocks and Ludo Lounge and the wonderful Larder House. This compact street, Southbourne Grove, houses a swathe of dynamic independents. We know we are very lucky in this area with food, bike and hike options, not mentioning the sailing grounds, but Southbourne has a certain edge with Jimmy’s Iced Coffee constantly always making us smile with his mischievous musical skills and beach skate vibe. From Gio’s feather head dress (Deli Rocks) to Sarah’s mezze mix (Velo Dom) it is obvious they love living here, and are very happy to try things out on us. I have not even mentioned the new super stylish, vegtastic duo at Roots yet – or the boys at Conker Spirit who have been making quality, locally botanicised gin for nearly three years. Time to walk this blessed high street:
LUDO LOUNGE
First up is Ludo Lounge, a very popular hang out for all ages, from breakfast through to evening. Rub shoulders with families, baby clubs, students playing draughts and Cluedo to good old locals in for a pint, a chat or, indeed, the Monday quiz night. Most popular? The breakfast club deal at £6.95 for the full lounge or veggie breakfast with tea or filter coffee is available Monday to Friday until 12. Clifton Coffee is served here.
DELI ROCKS
Here is the real deal – and some. I am greeted by the vision that is Giovanni Dora (Italian red Indian meets Keith Richards) and he hands me a cup of coffee and I chatted with a local who had popped in for some prosciutto for dinner that evening.
VELO DOMESTIQUE
I move on as a Brewhouse & Kitchen has recently opened here, but before I reach it the brightly painted windows of Velo Domestique catch my eye. This is my sort of place: bikes to the left, bar ahead, kitchen over to the right and old science lab stools taking detention along the wall. Sarah is turning out great, simple food. Try the mezze with sourdough from Bakehouse24 in Ringwood and the Boscanova coffee.
This excellent café developed from a pop-up last summer and with kick starter funding has been open 10 months. I urge you to visit, with or without the bike.
LARDER HOUSE
I am meeting old pal Geoff Phillips from Marina Projects for lunch and we have decided to eat at the Larder House. It is a favourite hub here for fine sherries/tapas and everything fabulous in between that they can cook in the enormous wood fired oven. Geoff knows Southbourne very well, but even he has not yet visited Velo Domestique or the Brewhouse, as he has never had the need to pass the crossroads. We need to address this I say to which Geoff adds that I also need to check out the Wight Bear Ale House. It lets you bring in a takeaway and even provides the plates – how cool is that? We mull over the modern delights of both Southbourne and Christchurch as we tuck into moules and wonderful meatballs on homemade pasta with slow roast passata, washed down with some fine sherries before heading upstairs to view the infamous library. This is the place to come for a crisp cocktail after hours and add a notch to James’ martini board. The hike: Just over five miles from Christchurch Harbour to Southbourne or catch the bus/take a taxi home. See www.gettingabout.co.uk

ACCESS
Premier’s Port Solent Marina is located in the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour. The journey takes you past Portsmouth’s battleships and leads you to Portchester Lake, passing Portchester Castle. This scenic journey takes approximately 30 - 40 minutes. Out of season beware of many unlit moorings on both sides of the channel. Port Solent is a locked marina and on arrival at the calling point on pile Green No.78 visitors must call ‘Port Solent’ on VHF Channel 80 and request a lock in. During peak periods Port Solent operate a number
system and staff will position vessels in a queue, monitored via VHF Channel 80. Port Solent is located close to the base of the A3 (M) London to Portsmouth road and is just off Junction 12 of the M27.
CRUISING
The Solent is a sailing playground on the South Coast of England and the marina is a great start point from which to experience the delights of one of the busiest and most famous sailing areas in the world. Pop over to Cowes on the Isle of Wight for the day, take a more leisurely cruise to
that include the use of a 40 tonne Wise travel lift and a 1.8 tonne jib crane on top of the Wise for mast work. As a Premier annual berth holder you are entitled to a minimum of eight weeks free storage ashore. In August 2016 the build of a self-store facility was completed. The 2500 sq. ft. purpose built facility, located in Port Solent’s indoor boat shed, provides a secure and dry storage solution for berth holders and visitors who wish to stow away sails, outboards and general boat equipment. There are 61 units, ranging in size from 10 sq ft to 100 sq ft, with prices starting from £10 a week.
Chichester Harbour or discover the calm waters of Beaulieu River and enjoy a pub lunch at The Master Builder’s House – a favourite meeting spot for yachtsmen. If you are looking for a great weekend out on the water with spectacular scenery take a cruise along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast to Lulworth Cove. THINGS TO DO
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
We were in Chichester Marina for 25 years and after a short break in Wales, we have been in Port Solent for the last three years with a 14m motorboat. We really like it there - it is perfect for us. The lock is not a problem as they dredge it every year. The staff are brilliant; always very helpful, with a core team of people.” John and Diane Brunyate, Jeanneau NC 14 “We have berthed with Premier Marinas at Port Solent since 2002 and seen quite a few changes as the years have ticked along, from improved toilet facilities, the introduction of Premier Hosts and improved bridgeheads. The staff past and current have always made our stay pleasant; everything from using the fuel pontoon or transiting the lock and helping with lines when shorthanded or simply a cheeky chat along the way!” Alistair and Carol McKenzie, sailboat “We have been at Port Solent for around 14 to 15 years – we can drive home in 10 minutes. We like the fact that it is peaceful there, with no movement on the water. We have been on J pontoon for the last 11 years and found our neighbours really friendly. Management are also always friendly and we think Port Solent is pretty good value for money. Terry Gingell, motorboat
Just a stroll away from the marina is the 12th Century Portchester Castle, an impressive historic structure and the best-preserved of all the Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ forts. It is a medieval building set within the walls of a 3rd century Roman fort. The castle provides the perfect setting for a relaxed and historic0 day out. Feel like walking? Take the four to five mile coastal path walk with panoramic views of Portsmouth Harbour to the castle. Or hop on Portsmouth’s Park and Ride service, conveniently located on the M275 entrance and visit Gunwarf Quay’s outlet shopping centre for some retail therapy or stop off at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and journey through centuries of Royal Navy history. n www.marinesuperstore.com n www.portsolent.com n parkandride.portsmouth.gov.uk n www.english-heritage.org.uk n gunwharf-quays.com n lulworth.com/visit/food-drink n hillbrookehotels.co.uk/the-master-builders

YACHT HAVENS SUPPORT SAIL 4 MACMILLAN FAMBRIDGE Yacht Haven-based sailing instructor Colin Stracey has announced that the Round Britain circumnavigation, ‘Sail4Macmillan’, will return in 2017 with Yacht Havens once again being sponsors. Last year, Colin led two boats around the UK raising over £6,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event started and finished at Fambridge and stopped at all six of Yacht Haven’s coastal marinas. Speaking about the challenge, Colin said: “Most of us will come into contact with cancer at some time in our lives and Macmillan, as many of us know, are there to help and support both the patient and their family. It is our personal experience of the superb care and support provided by Macmillan that has lead us to run this trip.” You can be a
part of this incredible fundraiser by signing up to sail in one of the seven legs. Varying from six to eight days, each leg offers different challenges, sights and scenery with no previous sailing experience required. www.premiersailing.co.uk/sail-around-britain-2017
FOX’S RAISES THE STANDARD FOX’S Marina and Boatyard is a longstanding partner of Oyster Yachts, and is the appointed Service Partner for the 2017-2019 Oyster World Rally. The experienced team from Fox’s were in Antigua prior to the start of the rally in January, and will be on hand at key stopovers, providing complimentary rig inspections and advice for the Oyster World Rally fleet. Fox’s Senior Rigger, John Spear said: “All Oyster World Rally boats in the ARC were inspected in Las Palmas before they crossed the Atlantic. Our plan is to re-inspect the rally fleet in
the Marquesas, New Zealand and Cape Town, however, if any boat needs a rigger we can provide a service throughout the rally. Fox’s has rigged 95 per cnet of all new Oysters from the very first models to the modern range and Oyster owners trust our service. We know the boats very well.” The Fox’s rigging team will re-join the Oyster fleet when the yachts reach the Marquesas Islands in May, some 5000nm into their 27,000 mile voyage, having negotiated their way through the Panama Canal and enjoyed exploring the Galapagos on route.
MARINA OF DISTINCTION FOR PLYMOUTH PLYMOUTH’S Mayflower Marina is the first in the UK to be named Marina of Distinction in the Coastal Marina (over 250 berths) category by The Yacht Harbour Association. David Crouch, Sailport Plc Company Chairman, said: “I am delighted to learn that we have received such a prestigious award from our industry association. For Mayflower Marina to be the first UK marina to receive this category award makes it a particularly special achievement. On behalf of the Sailport Plc Board, can I convey our sincere congratulations to Charles Bush, the Managing Director, and the whole Mayflower team.” This is the latest in a string of regional and national awards for the independent marina that is owned and operated by Sailport Plc. Since 2014 it has twice been named Marina of the Year in the Coastal Marina (over 250 berths) category by TYHA.
Charles Bush, Managing Director, Mayflower Marina, said: “This is unexpected and fantastic news for Mayflower Marina. It is an honour to receive the Marina of Distinction award for consistent customer service excellence. I am delighted for my staff and hugely grateful to our berth holders and visitors for their unstinting support over the years.” www.mayflowermarina.co.uk
TWO AWARDS FOR MDL MDL Marinas, Europe’s largest marina operator, has had two of its UK marinas recognised in the 2017 Marina of the Year Awards by the Yacht Harbour Association. Torquay Marina was awarded runnerup in the Coastal Marina category and Windsor Marina was runner up in the Inland Marina category. Over 150 Gold Anchor Marinas are eligible for the prestigious awards, which are voted for by boat owners and crew, and recognise marinas with exceptional facilities and customer service. Dean Smith, Operations and Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, said: “We are hugely proud of all our marinas and their teams who work hard day in, day out to ensure our members enjoy the very best customer service and marina experience. “It is fantastic that both Torquay and
Windsor have been recognised with these awards, which are voted for by customers, and it means a tremendous deal to the managers and our teams.” www.mdlmarinas.co.uk
OCEAN VILLAGE MARINA DEVELOPMENT TAKES SHAPE
THE final phase of the redevelopment of Ocean Village Marina will be completed this year, with the five-star luxury hotel and spa opening in the summer of 2017, along with a number of bars and restaurants. This is alongside a reconfiguration of the marina, set to commence in the autumn. The new hotel, being constructed on the top of the promontory projecting into the marina, will have a rooftop champagne bar and the award-winning jetty restaurant concept, with views across the Solent. There will also be 12 duplex apartments above
the hotel and an additional 82 separate apartments, all with allocated underground car parking. In addition, there will be a number of restaurant and retail openings, which are set to be announced in the coming months. Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas, said: “The year of completion is here and we are all getting very excited about the opening. We are urging customers to secure their berths so they can be one of the first to enjoy the exceptional development that Ocean Village Marina has become.”

LARGS Yacht Haven has been voted UK Coastal Marina of the Year 2017 at the prestigious Yacht Harbour Association annual awards. The award was received by Carolyn Elder, Largs Yacht Haven’s Marina Director, at the London Boat Show. Commenting on the accolade, Carolyn Elder said: “What a way to start 2017, we are absolutely thrilled! I must praise our entire Haven Team for their hard work. It is our staff who really set our marina apart by setting extremely high standards and delivering an incredible service to our berth holders. “What makes this award extra special is that it was voted for by boat owners in the UK. We have been overwhelmed by the comments and votes we received. We are extremely grateful to our berth holders and visiting boat owners who voted for us.” Once described by Olympic sailor Shirley Robertson as “the perfect sailing venue”, Carolyn is hopeful this award will bring a new wave of sailors to Largs, saying: “Largs and the Scottish west coast offers incredible sailing and motorboating

THE SILENT KILLER Think CO poisoning cannot happen? Think again.
THE ss Mastercla
OVER the winter the RYA launched a video campaign to highlight the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning on boats – aimed at reducing incidents, fatalities and ill health related to the poisonous gas. The video campaign kicked off with a festive mannequin challenge (https://youtu.be/IHmkXfHQdb8) as a teaser to grab people’s attention and was followed up with a longer, more informative video that outlines the sources and symptoms of CO poisoning. Ultimately the campaign intended to encourage boaters to think about their actions and install an alarm that is certified to the British Standard as suitable for use when camping and/or in recreational vehicles such as boats and caravans (BS EN50291-2:2010).
▲ Sadly a couple and their dog died of CO poisoning last June while on the Norfolk Broads. It was found the accommodation area on their boat, Love for Lydia, was not ventilated and with the engine running, the concentration of CO reached high levels in less than three minutes
THE SILENT KILLER
Known as ‘the silent killer’ because you cannot see, smell or taste it, carbon monoxide kills 40 people a year across the UK while injuring thousands more. There are many sources of carbon monoxide on boats including engines, generators, solid fuel burners and cookers. Canopies on deck can allow poisonous gases to build up, rapidly reaching fatal levels. Ventilation is essential.
The gaff cutter Annabel J captured on a perfect day south of Langstone harbour by Bob Goode.
Back in 2014, the RYA reported on the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning in the RYA Safety Advisory Notice following the MAIB investigations into two double fatalities in North Yorkshire and the Lake District. Despite considerable publicity about the dangers of carbon monoxide, another couple sadly died on the Norfolk Broads in the summer of 2016 when they were overcome by the fumes from their idling petrol engine. More recently a man was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in Cardiff on board his privately owned cabin cruiser in November. Another investigation is underway. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas, hence the silent killer tag, and can kill quickly if inhaled in high concentrations. At lower levels as it begins to take effect, the symptoms of poisoning are similar to flu or food poisoning and include headaches, nausea and dizziness. As time passes, or the amount of CO builds, you may suffer chest pains and breathlessness leading to seizure and unconscious. And if nothing is done, death can happen quickly after that. So early recognition of the symptoms is critical and action to get out to fresh air straight away can save lives.
in the confined space of boat cabins can occur with one or a mix of these factors: ■ Faulty, badly maintained or misused appliances ■ Exhaust fumes from a boat’s engine or generator ■ Escaped flue gases from solid fuel stoves ■ Blocked ventilation or short supply of air - fuels need the right amount of oxygen to burn safely
“The message is quite clear – understand the dangers and sources of carbon monoxide” Graham Watts of the Boat Safety Scheme said: “Over a million people go boating free from harm each year, but to go boating safely, the risks need treating with due respect. Carbon monoxide in a small space like a boat cabin has to be avoided. By following the basic advice on our website and by having CO alarms on board as a back-up, you should have a
happy and incident-free time afloat.” With winter now in full swing, the RYA is reminding boaters that even lowlevels of the poison can cause lasting damage to your health. So it is vital to have a working carbon monoxide detector. The 2017 RYA Safety Advisory Notice, to be launched in the spring, will also seek to highlight just how quickly the poisonous gas can overcome victims. CO detectors sound an alarm at low concentration levels to give a person time to react, and regrettably it appears that these are often mistaken as false alarms rather than an early warning and are switched off.
SIMPLE MESSAGE
The message is quite clear – understand the dangers and sources of carbon monoxide. If the alarm sounds, take action to shut off CO sources (engines, generators, open flame appliances) if safe to do so, get clear of fumes into the fresh air and seek immediate medical attention. More information and the CO safety video
KNOW THE RISKS
This deadly poisonous gas has multiple potential sources on boats including all fuel-burning appliances, flues, chimneys, engine exhausts and charcoal BBQs. In particular, the Boat Safety Scheme warns that CO build-up

DO you remember when Whitbread, Truman’s and Manns were independent and advertised their stouts on the then new-fangled commercial TV channel? Those days have gone but the dense black beer is showing signs of new growth. Stout was born out of Porter, which got its name from its popularity among London’s street-market workers in the 18th century. Strengths ranged from four to eight per cent. The stronger ones were referred to as stout porter. Over time, the double name was dropped leaving two separate beers. Porter is made with dark malts and stouts using roasted barley, producing a sharper flavour. Vast quantities were exported to Ireland, which inspired a Dublin brewer called Arthur Guinness to make his own stout (1759), including the essential roasted barley in the mash. World War One
LONDON BOAT SHOW
ABOVE: Delicious craft gins at the boat show LEFT: My favourite from Rose Cottage Liqueurs is elderflower
In the aisles where ropes and chandlery were grouped I found the Rose Cottage Liqueurs stand a welcome and refreshing oasis. Unashamedly riding on the back of the current gin bonanza, this craft operation makes a range of gin blended with semiexotic fruit cordials. The resultant 22 per cent strength qualifies them as liqueurs but not the typical oily drinks the name may bring to mind. Those at the show were fresh and tangy: elderflower (my preference), rhubarb and rose haw, plum and pear and pomegranate, in boat-friendly sculptor’s mallet-shaped bottles. A sipping drink neat, or mix for a spritzer 50:50 with Prosecco, tonic, soda or water. Mainly marketed at shows and country fairs or available through rosecottagedrinks.co.uk. This year’s show seemed to be awash with Prosecco as the ubiquitous choice for the promotional hospitality. But the diYachting charter company impressed by thoughtfully selecting I-heart sauvignon blanc wine to go with their Mediterranean-style snacks. diYachting.co.uk

restrictions on barley stopped UK stout brewing, but production continued in Ireland. After World War Two, UK brewing revived to a modest level. Now a growing number of new or refreshed stout brands are being created by established brewers and craft breweries needing to offer more distinctive speciality beers. Waitrose, for example, stocks three wellestablished brands: Murphy’s Irish Stout, Mackeson Stout (a post-war Whitbread brand) and Guinness, correctly classified as a ‘stout’ but universally referred to as just Guinness. At the top of the strength tree at 10 per cent a.b.v, Courage Imperial Russian Stout is now made by Wells & Young’s, Bedford with intensely aromatic roasted barley, dense dark colour and a generous creamy head. In 2011, the independent Black Sheep Brewery, Masham, Yorks, created a new IRS 8.5 per cent limited edition which has proved popular enough to become a year-round brew. Best sourced from the Sheepy Shop (01765 680 101/ www.blacksheepbrewery.com). The Hop Back Brewery, Wiltshire, best known for its Summer Lightning draught ale, brews Entire Stout year-round, 4.5 per cent, dark, strong roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and hoppy flavour. Fuller’s long established brewery in Chiswick offer their Black Cab Stout, and the Meantime brewery (Greenwich) have their Meantime London Stout. Stout is renowned for going well with oysters and several oyster stouts are produced which include local oysters in the mash such as Whitstable Oyster Stout brewed by Shepherd Neame, Faversham, Kent and Oystermouth by the Mumbles Brewery, Glamorgan. Mersea Island Brewery, Essex, created a new recipe for theirs using a lot of oats plus dark malts and local oysters, and I like to think the oyster content is discernable!
