NEW CHALLENGE FOR THE SOLENT

FROM PAGE ONE: A new concept for yacht racing and running is coming to the Solent in March. It is the brainchild of extreme challenge sportsman Scott Dawson who was the first man to run, swim, cycle and sail around the Isle of Wight in aid of the Marine Conservation Society and Meningitis Now. The Wind Runner Challenge, from 19 - 22 March, will see teams of eight race identical yachts across three different race courses, and as each yacht race finishes

runners from each team will leap off and take part in three different running races. There will, of course, also be an après-racing schedule. The event will support the Marine Conservation Society, which works for the increased protection of the seas around the UK. Scott Dawson of Wolf Challenges said: “I am delighted to be launching the inaugural Wind Runner Challenge with Britannia Corporate Events. Sailing and

FAIRLINE HEAD SOUTH FAIRLINE Yachts has released further information regarding its new manufacturing facility, announced during Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The location of the facility has been revealed as Hythe, Southampton Water where Fairline has taken possession of a five-acre waterside location. Building work is anticipated to take around nine months to complete, and Fairline is expecting to launch the new facility and begin boat building on the South Coast in late summer. The manufacturing facility will enable Fairline to build larger yachts, which has not been

possible at the firm’s existing Oundle, Northamptonshire location. The boat yard’s manufacturing base in Oundle will continue to operate and will build boats up to 60ft. Boats over 60ft will be built at the new site with testing, commissioning and customer handover also taking place there. Conveniently located in Southampton Water, the facility has deep water berths and more than 200,000 sq feet of undercover manufacturing space. It is expected the new facility will initially create up to 200 jobs in the Southampton area. Russell Currie, Managing Director of Fairline Yachts, told

WORLD RECORD

François Gabart has set a new singlehanded round the world record of 42 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds. Skippering the 30m MACIF trimaran, Gabart beat the previous time set by Thomas Coville on 25 December 2016 by six days, 10 hours, 23 minutes and 53 seconds. Gabart joins an elite group as only three sailors have held the singlehanded round the world record - Francis Joyon, Ellen MacArthur and Thomas Coville. Gabart’s new record has now been verified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council, which checked the ship’s GPS data before confirming the result.

CLASSY BUILDERS

After 38 weeks of demanding work the Class of February 2017 at the Boat Building Academy Lyme Regis launched their boats for the first time at Lyme Regis Harbour. The 15 students built six boats, all of which lined up for launch. The boats built by the students included a Moth Dinghy, Beaulieu Scow and Orkney Yole. OFFSHORE OLYMPICS

At the Yacht Racing Forum Gary Jobson, Vice President of the International Sailing Federation, laid out the proposal for a showcase Olympic event, a 300nm nonstop offshore keelboat race for a two-person mixed crew in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Running complementary to that proposal is a plan to host an Offshore World Championship starting in 2019, again for a two-person mixed team.

A second Italian syndicate, Adelasia of Torres, have indicated their intention to challenge for the America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021. They are fronted by Renato Azara, and he will have Duccio Colombi with him who has won 11 Italian championships, two European and four world championships. The search is now on to find backers for the project. They join Sicilian neighbours Luna Rossa for the 36th America’s Cup. Entries officially opened on 1 January and the class rule for the new foiling 75ft monohull will be released on 31 March.

By Jane Hyde IT has been a busy month with lots of positive news for the marine industry, and the Solent area in particular. The announcement of Fairline’s new manufacturing facility at Hythe, Southampton Water has been very well received. The news created quite a buzz on the All at Sea Facebook page with one reader saying “it is fantastic for the area”. The general consensus seems to be that it will be great for the region. Not to mention a very positive sign from this muchloved boat builder. Also hitting the headlines again was HMS Queen Elizabeth when Her Majesty The Queen commissioned the UK’s new aircraft carrier into the Royal Navy. The Portsmouth based ship is completing final build activity and preparing for helicopter trials in the New Year, before heading to the United States for initial flight trials. Just before Christmas news came out that the aircraft carrier is leaking because of a faulty seal. However we are told by the Royal Navy that it will not prevent the ship from sailing early in the new year. On a smaller scale than the aircraft carrier, but exciting nonetheless, is the news of a new yacht racing and running event coming to the Solent in March. Combining these two popular sports is sure to be a hit. Let us know if you plan to take part. An event that needs no introduction is Lendy Cowes Week. Entries are now open for this year’s event. What better way to start the new year than signing up for this iconic regatta! If you are still choosing a resolution for 2018, how about reducing your use of plastics? As the Marine Conservation Society has highlighted “our oceans are choking in plastic”. They are suggesting a levy on single

The Volvo Ocean Race is also very involved in the issue of plastic waste, and research carried out since the start of the race, using data collected by Dee Caffari’s Turn the Tide on Plastic, has already found that levels of micro plastic in the ocean are significantly higher than first thought. A few simple ideas from Dee include: “Refusing plastic bags, disposable coffee cups and drinking straws – and through these very simple actions, we can make a big impact.” While the pictures of the damage plastic is doing to nature are shocking, I am happy to say that last year’s best photos of the month sent in by you, which you can see on page 20, are brilliant. PARALYMPICS FOR PARIS?

WORLD Sailing, the world governing body of the sport, has officially expressed an interest to the International Paralympic Committee to be included in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. It is one of eight sports not currently on the Paralympic Programme that notified the IPC about their intent to apply for Paris 2024. “World Sailing is passionate and determined to win the hearts and minds

of the IPC so that sailing is re-included within the Paralympic programme in Paris,” said Kim Andersen, World Sailing President. “The opportunity to compete at the Paralympic Games was and would be the pinnacle for Para Sailors within our sport, where sailors, regardless of types and degrees of disability have the opportunity to excel on a truly level playing field.”

Sailing was removed from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Sports Programme in January 2015. Following this news, World Sailing has accelerated the growth of the sport through initiatives such as the Paralympic Development Programme that culminated in more than 80 sailors from 37 nations and five continents racing across three events at the 2017 Para World Sailing Championships.

PICTURE THE START DEAR ALL AT SEA I read David Henshall’s article Picture the Start (December issue) and his reference to Gate Starts with great interest. I well remember those championships; the film of a gate start as described was very impressive and had clearly entailed a lot of work and considerable ingenuity. The air of concern of the competitors over whether it would really work was quite evident. On the day, it was a great success, except for one problem. It was so fair that there were perhaps 30 or so boats at a time arriving at the weather mark at the same. The amount of bumping and boring, flutter of protest flags, and impolite language has probably never been exceeded. The Protest Committee had an impossible task on the first day, so elected some unfortunate to sit in the modified Carley Float, which was the weather mark, on the second day to take down the numbers of the offending boats. I think it was probably the top end of F3 into F4, so it was more than a little bumpy and this together with the turbulence of sea and wind, and the threat of being rammed by the competitors, created very unpleasant conditions for the Carley Float and its inhabitant.

It was rumoured that the occupant had vowed never to go afloat again if he was to retain his sanity. The problem was resolved subsequently by having the start much further downwind from the leeward mark, thus giving a longer first beat, which stretched the fleet out. NEWS SNAPS RACE CANCELLED

Due to the uniquely low water levels currently affecting the Thames Water reservoir, Queen Mary SC announced that the 2018 Bloody Mary Pursuit Race, scheduled to run on 6 January as part of the GJW Direct SailJuice Winter Series, was cancelled. Thanks to some speedy action by King George Sailing Club, the King George Gallop stepped in as a temporary replacement event. www.queenmary.org.uk

The British Youth Sailing Team claimed two medals in the Youth Sailing World Championships in China, with windsurfer Emma Wilson topping the podium in the RS:X event and Daisy Collingridge sealing bronze in the Laser Radial.

FLARE ESCAPE

A refuse worker in Cambridgeshire received a huge shock when a marine flare exploded in his hand and hit him in the stomach before ricocheting around the room. The incident took place at Amey’s Materials Recycling Facility where another flare was also discovered. There were no injuries and Amey is encouraging people to think more carefully about what they are throwing away. The appropriate flare disposal methods should always be followed. CARIBBEAN COMEBACK

Following the devastating hurricanes in the Caribbean Sunsail has given All at Sea an up-date. The Sunsail base locations impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Maria will reopen(ed) as follows: British Virgin Islands (9 December 2017), Puerto Rico 1 February, St. Martin 1 February. The local teams in the British Virgin Islands and St. Martin have made great progress in just a short time since Hurricane Irma and Maria passed through these territories. They are working hard along with their partners in the cruising grounds to welcome guests back for the winter sailing season.

The British Virgin Islands are scheduled to receive 130 new boats for a value of $66.5m in early 2018. The Bahamas, Belize, Antigua, Grenada and St. Lucia were unaffected and continue to operate charters. Josie Tucci, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Sunsail, told All at Sea: “The humanitarian response from customers, partners and employees has been overwhelming, and the tenacity of the local communities has been nothing short of inspiring. THIS year 66 clubs from 17 countries will compete for Best Sailing Club of the Year 2018 in regattas at Porto Cervo, St. Petersburg and St. Moritz. The SAILING Champions League is an international competition between the top sailing clubs from each nation, featuring world-class sailors from dinghies, keelboats and offshore racing. Each country holds its own National Sailing League and the four top clubs qualify. The British clubs that qualified through the British Keelboat League are: Itchenor Sailing Club (British Champion 2017), Royal Ocean Racing Club, Wessex Sailing Club and Port Edgar Yacht Club. The SAILING Champions League 2018 season kicks off with Act 1 in Porto Cervo, Sardinia from 31 May to 3 June, where the best 32 sailing clubs from the first group will meet. The qualifying races for the second group will take place in Act 2 in St. Petersburg, Russia in August. The top 15 teams from each Act will battle it out in the final in St. Moritz, Switzerland (30 August – 2 September). QUEEN WELCOMES SHIP INTO NAVY HER Majesty The Queen has commissioned the UK’s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth into the Royal Navy. In her role as the ship’s Lady Sponsor Her Majesty addressed guests before the Ship’s Commanding Officer, Captain Jerry Kyd, read the commissioning warrant. The iconic White Ensign was then raised, symbolising the commissioning of the nation’s future flagship into the Royal Navy’s fleet. Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “Our new aircraft carrier is the epitome of British design and dexterity, at the core of our efforts to build an Armed Forces fit for the future. For the next half a century both carriers will advance our interests around the globe, providing the most visible symbol of our intent and commitment to protect the UK from intensifying threats, wherever they may come from.” Having successfully completed her second stage of sea trials off the south coast of England, the carrier is back at her home port of Portsmouth. Completing

final build activity and preparing for helicopter trials in the New Year, HMS Queen Elizabeth will head to the United States for initial flight trials in autumn 2018. However 2017 ended on a negative note for the aircraft carrier with the news that it is leaking because of a faulty seal. According to the Sun newspaper, HMS Queen Elizabeth has been taking on up to 200 litres of sea water every hour as a result of the fault. A Royal Navy spokesman said: “An issue with a shaft seal has been identified during HMS Queen Elizabeth’s sea trials; this is scheduled for repair while she is alongside at Portsmouth. It does not prevent her from sailing again and her sea trials programme will not be affected.” In what has been termed, ‘the Year of the Royal Navy’ the second carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, was named in Rosyth and is structurally complete. Both new aircraft carriers will be able to perform a wide range of tasks, from humanitarian and disaster relief to fighting terrorism and high-end warfighting.

Last year the Royal Navy also had steel cut on the first of the Type 26 frigates and Dreadnought submarines, the launch of the National Shipbuilding Strategy, provisioning for a new class

of frigate, the Type 31e, float out of the fourth Astute submarine, HMS Audacious, the naming of two Offshore Patrol Vessels and the arrival of the first two MARS Tankers in the UK.

EXTREME SAILING SERIES’ DRAMATIC CONCLUSION

World Sailing’s World Cup Series Final in 2018 will head to Marseille, France, the host city for the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition. The 2017/2018 World Cup Series commenced in Japan in October, while Miami will host the American round this month followed by Hyères, France in April. Marseille will then host the final from 3 – 10 June. “Once an Olympic venue is announced, sailors are eager to train, race and compete on the waters of the Olympic Sailing Competition,” commented World Sailing President Kim Andersen. www.sailing.org

SAP Extreme Sailing Team was crowned champion of the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series™, while Alinghi took home Act 8, Los Cabos in a tense season finale. SAP Extreme Sailing Team co-skipper Rasmus Køstner said: “It has been a great journey and a really fantastic achievement by the team and I am very proud of them for the work they have put in. We are finally here and it is a good feeling, that is for sure.” Although the season trophy was out of reach for Alinghi and Oman Air, their fate in the Act standings was only

decided in the last nail-biting race of the day. Not deterred by Oman Air’s two race wins in the run-up, the Swiss finished ahead of the Omani syndicate to seal the Act 8 triumph. Land Rover BAR Academy was helmed by Olympic gold-medallist and 2017 America’s Cup sailor Giles Scott, who managed to out sail his America’s Cup rival, Kiwi Josh Junior, who was at the helm of NZ Extreme Sailing Team. A fifth-place finish in the Act for the team saw it leapfrog the New Zealand-entry on the overall leaderboard to take fifth.

THE RYA Dinghy Show presented by Suzuki, in association with Yachts & Yachting and Gill, takes place at Alexandra Palace over 3 - 4 March with the theme #dinghysailingforlife. OSPREY APP NEWS

Osprey Technical’s new app, designed to work on the iPhone and Apple Watch, is for B&G marine electronics. The app uses the built-in WiFi of individual units to transmit data to the Apple Watch without the need for a third party software. The app enables individuals to tailor the data they see. Currently in Beta mode, it is being tested by navigators and their teams. Once testing is complete, the app will be available to purchase on the App Store.

FISHING BOAT STUCK A fishing boat, making its way from Sussex to Cornwall, became stuck in a Cornish street. Ocean Pride was built in 1919 and had been discovered rotting in a Rye boatyard. A campaign by the Newlyn and Mousehole community was bringing the boat back to her birthplace in Cornwall to restore her. The driver eventually managed to reach his destination.

COUNTDOWN TO GOLDEN GLOBE

THE Golden Globe Race is set to start from Les Sables d’Olonne on 1 July. The event marks the 50th anniversary of the Sunday Times Golden Globe solo nonstop round the world race in 1968/9. However French Sailing Federation (FFV) announced that the rules for the race do not meet their regulations, meaning the event cannot start and end in France. Following the news the two sides met in December to discuss the future of the race. The officials of the 2018 Golden Globe Race released a statement following their meeting to discuss all aspects of the organisation, operation, safety and security considerations for racing. “Discussions were cordial and very productive. It was agreed at an early stage of the meeting that all participants in the room have sailing at heart and hold great respect for the spirit and essence of the original Golden Globe Race as the foundation for all current around the world solo sailing. “The GGR organisers respect the FFV’s position and were happy for the opportunity to present their case that serious and professional consideration has been given to producing responsible safety, security and risk minimisation for this challenging adventure, recreating the original 1968 Golden Globe.” The FFV explained that they must work within current legislative requirements of the French Government and World Sailing. They suggest that the 2018 Golden Globe may be more of an adventure and maritime event than a true yacht race. In principle, the FFV is not against the event, understands that the 2018 Golden Globe Race is recreating

International Paint Poole Regatta, 26 – 28 May, will be hosting a record number of championships. The classes holding their National Championship at Poole will be the J24, HP30, MOCRA, VPRS and 2.4mR. The 2.4mR class will also be holding their Tidal Championship. With no IRC National Championship in 2018 and the European Championship in Cowes limited to boats rating over 0.995, the IRC Southern Area Championship at the regatta takes on a far greater significance. SOLENT DRAMA

A Russian cargo ship, the Mekhanik Yartsev, got into difficulties off Lee-on-the-Solent on Boxing Day and began listing heavily. Athough the 13 crew members remained on board bad weather meant the ship could not be moved initially. However, a few days after Christmas a tug and pilot boat successfully moved the ship into the Port of Southampton. This incident comes almost three years since the Hoegh Osaka was deliberately grounded in the Solent after it began listing after setting sail from Southampton.

Given that there is just six months left, that will be a tall order for some who have to buy a boat and refit it, then complete their 2,000-mile proving voyage. UNSUNG HEROES AT the RYA Volunteer Awards 58 awards were presented by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal in recognition of boating’s most dedicated volunteers and the pioneering Project Scaramouche. The awards are recognised across five categories: the RYA Awards, RYA Community Awards, Francis Elkin Award, the Family Award and the RYA Award for Endeavour. Greig City Academy based in North London is the first London State School to have its own sailing club and was named as the winner of the RYA Award for Endeavour for Project Scaramouche. The project saw a group of 12 students learn to sail, give around 50 talks and raise enough funding to purchase and restore the 45ft yacht Scaramouche.

So far more than 120 young people have had the opportunity to sail on Scaramouche and in August eight youngsters completed the RORC Rolex Fastnet Race. Jon Holt, the teacher responsible for the project, collected the award alongside pupils Montel FaganJordan, Shabazz Patterson and Camilo Orobio. Jon said: “It is a huge honour to be nominated for the RYA Award for Endeavour, not just to receive the award but also to be in the company of the guests here today”. BRITISH Marine’s Senior External Relations Executive, Andrew Harries, has provided this update on the important Brexit breakthrough. The UK Government and the European Commission have come to an agreement on the divorce bill, the future of EU and UK citizens and the Irish border, therefore allowing Brexit negotiations to move on to discuss the all-important future relationship and trade agreement. Over the course of 2017, British Marine has been working with its members, the Royal Yachting Association and a host of UK Government Departments to set out key areas of interest for the leisure marine, superyacht and small commercial marine industry. This includes: n Ensuring UK vessels maintain Union Goods status and securing VAT paid status on second hand boats n Making sure the industry maintains access to skilled labour post-Brexit n Preventing non-tariff barriers from being introduced between the UK and EU which will significantly hamper the industry’s future trade outlook Scoping out markets for inclusion in future trade deals British Marine has been working with a number of group association committees to help develop this work. WITH entries for the world famous Lendy Cowes Week regatta now open organisers Cowes Week Limited have announced a number of new initiatives for the event. Feedback from the various classes taking part has led to a comprehensive re-working of the entry fee structure. Standard and late entry fees for all classes have been reduced for 2018, while smaller one-design and IRC boats received an added boost. There are two new entry categories to further reduce the entry fees paid by those boats with fewer crew and more limited budgets. Other initiatives for 2018 include the introduction of four-day mini-series for the Quarter Ton and FAST40+ classes and the new HP30 class, which will include fixed line and committee boat starts each day, together with the addition of an Around the Island Race on 9 August for IMOCA

COWES Harbour Commission is working with Destination Cowes and Visit Isle of Wight to promote Cowes as a unique port-of-call, encouraged by the rising demand in the cruise ship market. Cowes is ideally located on the central south coast of the UK and is a costeffective stopover port for European and UK cruise itineraries. SANYA Serenity Coast claimed victory in a thrilling finale to Race 4: The ClipperTelemed+ Tasman Test, the first stage of the All-Australian Leg of the Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race. It was one of the tightest ever Clipper Race finishes into Sydney, which saw the top three teams - Sanya Serenity Coast, Visit Seattle and Qingdao - finish within an hour-and-half of each other after 12 days of racing. Victorious skipper, Wendy Tuck, said: “It was the most nerve-racking race of my life. The lead changed so much, it was such a competitive race so it feels amazing to get the win. Especially with all my family and friends here watching.” With its third place finish, Qingdao remained first in the overall Clipper Race standings. The excitement continued further back in the rankings too with a dead heat declared for the first time in Clipper Race history, with both GREAT Britain and Nasdaq sharing

eighth place. They were neck-and-neck as they entered Sydney Harbour but swapped positions frequently. GREAT Britain was originally awarded eighth place but Clipper Race Director Mark Light said: “We had to examine photographic evidence from both boats, which is the normal procedure in a close finish, and we found from both photos and video footage that it was inconclusive. We could not split the teams.” The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race began on Boxing Day. In the end just 90 minutes separated the 11 Clipper Race teams, including mere seconds between some teams in the fleet. However it was HotelPlanner.com who won the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Clipper 70 Class after being granted a 120 minute redress for going to the assistance of a fellow competitor shortly after the race start. FOLLOWING the grounding of Greenings on 31 October, the salvage operation to remove the Clipper yacht from the Cape Peninsula has been undertaken. It was decided that the vessel would take no further action in the Clipper 2017-18 Race, and that it was beyond repair and would be removed by The Subtech Group/Ardent. Peter Brinkley, Chief Engineer attending on behalf of Navalmartin (Casualty Management Service), the Clipper Race and its insurers, said: “We faced a number of early challenges to the removal which included obtaining access to the beach as it is in a very remote location, and also a bush fire started in the surrounding veld part way through the operation which delayed efforts for a few days. “It was a priority to work quickly. The varying weather conditions only gave us small windows of time to carry out the task at hand. We had to deal with the incessant influx

of sand at high water brought in by the breaking waves and exacerbated by bad weather.” “Subtech opted to erect a tower made of scaffolding material to support the mast before we could start cutting the hull up from the forward and aft sections, dismantling components on board, and removing the engine, as the work progressed. The removed hull pieces were transferred into cargo nets and loaded on to a truck for disposal.” Speaking about the loss of CV24, Sir Robin said: “She had completed two round the world voyages, one of which she was the winner, as LMAX Exchange, and had an unbeaten streak in the 2017-18 race. It is always just desperately sad to see a fine vessel finish its story like this.” A full MAIB / MCA investigation is currently underway into the reasons for the grounding and the Clipper Race will publish the findings when they are available.

MICRO PLASTIC LEVELS HIGHER THAN EXPECTED MILLIONS of tiny particles of plastic have been detected in European waters in ground breaking scientific research conducted as part of the Volvo Ocean Race. Micro plastic is small particles of plastic often invisible to the naked eye – and can take thousands of years to degrade. The scientific research, using data collected by race team Turn the Tide on Plastic, identified more than three million micro plastic particles per square kilometre of ocean. The initial results were gathered during the Prologue stage and Leg 1 of the race, between Lisbon and Alicante. Speaking about the results Dr Toste Tanhua, who works at GEOMAR, an ocean research institute in Kiel, Germany, said: “Our initial findings suggest that the levels of micro plastic in the ocean are significantly higher than we first expected. This is alarming as the micro plastic not only harms a wide range of marine life, but, through entering the food chain in species such as tuna and mackerel, can cause harm to humans, too.” The results were presented by Dr Tanhua during the two-day Volvo Ocean Race Ocean Summit in Cape Town. Speakers at the summit included The Ocean Cleanup founder Boyan Slat, WWF’s John Duncan and Volvo Ocean Race skippers, Vestas 11th Hour Racing’s Charlie Enright and Turn the Tide on Plastic’s Dee Caffari.

Dr Tanhua continued: “Existing scientific data only accounts for around one per cent of all plastic in the ocean – but thanks to the support of Volvo Ocean Race and Volvo Cars, and the efforts of the Turn the Tide on Plastic team in conducting this research, we are building a knowledge base which is essential to ocean science around the globe.” The Volvo Ocean Race Science Programme is funded by Volvo Cars, who are donating € 100 from the first 3,000 sales of the new V90 Cross Country Volvo Ocean Race edition to support the initiative. “This is a ground breaking project, bringing sport and science together,” said Dee Caffari, who is leading the team amplifying the United Nations Environment Clean Seas campaign. “As round-the-world sailors, we have seen first-hand the growing problem of marine debris and plastic pollution – and now we are collecting reference data for scientists around the globe. “People are doing the little things – refusing plastic bags, disposable coffee cups and drinking straws – and through these very simple actions, we can make a big impact.” Back in the race, Leg 3 saw the Volvo Ocean Race fleet sail 6,500nm from Cape Town to Melbourne. As in Leg 2, the winner was the Spanish MAPFRE team, followed by Dongfeng Race

The regulation will ban microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products in England. The move will stop billions of the tiny pieces of plastic washing down the drain every year. It is part of a package of measures by the Government to crackdown on plastics that harm the environment. It is also looking at how we can reduce the impact of plastic bottles and further turn the tide on marine litter.

THERE has been a 10 per cent rise in the amount of beach litter picked up compared to 2016, according to the Great British Beach Clean. The 2017 event, the UK’s largest beach clean up and survey, saw 6,944 volunteer beach cleaners pick up record amounts of litter from 339 UK beaches. On average there were 718 bits of rubbish from every 100m cleaned. The Marine Conservations Society says it is

time for a levy on single-use items that are handed over, free of charge, in their millions when we are out and about. It says the levy should be imposed on such items as straws, cups, lids, stirrers and cutlery. Lizzie Prior, MSC Beach and River Clean Project Officer, said: “The 5p single-use carrier bag charge has made a massive difference to the number of plastic bags entering our seas. If a levy was placed on

single use plastic such as straws, stirrers, cutlery, cups and cup lids, we are confident that we would find fewer of these items on our beaches.” MCS’ CEO Sandy Luk said: “Our beach clean evidence shows a shocking rise in the amount of litter this year. VOLVO Ocean Race campaigner team AkzoNobel reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the world’s oceans from plastic waste when members of the sailing team and local AkzoNobel employees joined forces at a beach clean in Cape Town. The team AkzoNobel sailors took part in the beach clean after they arrived in Cape Town after the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. At a glance the beach appeared free of any large items of rubbish, but closer inspection revealed a myriad of smaller bits of plastic. They filled 11 large bags with plastic waste and other man-made rubbish from the beach at Sea Point. Team AkzoNobel watch captain Chris Nicholson (AUS) said the problem of plastic in the ocean has been getting steadily worse over his 20 years as an ocean racing yachtsman: “The beach looks clean from up on the promenade but when you come down here and have a microscopic look, you can see that it is anything but clean. It is always sobering to come and do this sort of thing.”

CARBON FIBRE RECYCLING

LAND Rover BAR are working on an environmental project with ELG Carbon Fibre Ltd. They plan to ensure that the carbon fibre process waste and end-of-use components from their America’s Cup test and race boats are recycled as far as possible, to promote the most economic and environmentally efficient use of this valuable material. The recovered fibres will be converted into ELG’s milled and chopped fibres, which are used to make thermoset and thermoplastic compounds and nonwoven mats that are utilised in the manufacture

of composite structures. KILDA CHALLENGE

The second St Kilda Challenge date has been set for 14 - 16 June. The 2018 edition promises to build on the strong foundations of 2016’s inaugural event, with the addition of a third fleet. In addition to the racing fleet, which uses the islands of St Kilda as turning marks on a 100nm long course, there is also a cruise-in-company fleet which leaves the start line at the same time. A third fleet of racing yachts will set off from Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland, participating in a 200nm race, again using the St Kilda islands as a turning point, before finishing up in the Sound of Harris.

POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTHâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S ENGINE NEWS

WITH the date for a move to single fuel for all vessels getting ever closer and the search for economy getting keener, there are now some diesel outboards getting developed that will be of interest to commercial and high hour leisure users. It is interesting that certain things fall out of favour or fashion and then the wheel goes full circle and those ideas surface once again. So it is with the diesel outboards, which are nothing new. Amarc made a 9.25hp diesel outboard with electric start in 1960. Ruggerini, the Italian engine maker, produced a 25hp diesel outboard and Yanmar produced a lovely range of diesel outboards up until 2006 at 18, 27, 36 and 40hp, as just a few of the examples that are already out there. The trouble with these old, simple diesel outboards is their emissions; they do not comply with the new Euro standards. That is what killed them off. Also, a diesel outboard is quite heavy for its power output.

NEW TECH

Modern automotive technology, which is way ahead of the marine market in the emissions control stakes, has allowed the likes of OXE Marine to advance the diesel outboard to the modern era. Their

unit that produces greater power to weight than any other engine available. Having undergone extensive military development trials the engine is ready for commercial roll-out in 2018. These are designated diesel engines, not converted petrol units to enable them to run on diesel, which has been the case for the most part up until now.

production diesel outboard is the first true high performance model producing 200hp at very low fuel consumption. The OXE diesel outboard is about 40 per cent more fuel efficient than a modern 200hp petrol two-stroke. One of the problems diesel engines give outboard makers is the sheer torque they produce; gearboxes have to be super strong to deal with it. The way OXE have circumvented this is to use toothed belt drive to act as a cushion and also allows the engine to be mounted horizontally, rather than vertically with fewer transfer losses. The in water section of the leg can be slimmer too, reducing drag to aid performance and fuel efficiency. It is designed to be a direct replacement for outboards in the 150hp - 400hp range.

Other makers are also chasing the Shangri la of a diesel outboard to meet all requirements. Cox Marine are based in Sussex and are headed up by a Formula 1 design genius, David Cox, who has applied his talents to designing a revolutionary new outboard engine utilising opposed piston technology, with eight pistons running in four cylinders. With the research and development that is going on apace in the commercial sector, it will not be long before the diesel outboard is produced for the leisure market. Charter operators will see a major benefit, with reduced running costs and the greater safety implications of diesel fuel over that of petrol, plus the ease of accessibility to diesel over petrol on the water for remote location operation. In time I can see diesel units small enough for use on tenders. So, petrol is being squeezed from both sides, diesel on the one hand and electric on the other.

The Deltic engine designed and built by Napier was a two-stroke diesel opposed piston, supercharged engine with three banks of pistons arranged in a triangular formation with a crankshaft at each corner. They were installed in minesweepers and the Deltic engine was also used in locomotives. The actual opposed piston system has been around for quite a while.

Therefore it works well when used for land-based activities such as running, hiking and biking too. Of course, though, it is about taking to the water, and it has been built to withstand the harsh marine environment. The watch has a water rating down to 100m and the sunlight-readable colour display with a LED backlight means you can read data in any light. Our tester reported the big screen was a major plus point for the watch with data very easy to read. Good news for those concerned about battery life, as we all are, the quatix 5 offers up to 24 hours of battery life in GPS mode, 60 hours in UltraTrac mode and two weeks when in smart watch mode, depending on your settings. It is not all about how it works, as this is a great looking watch too with a rugged, yet sleek design. They say beginners will need a six-day flotilla course on any of their flotillas in Greece. This course is designed to take students with little or no experience to the level that they can skipper a flotilla yacht under the guidance of the lead crew. Plan a second week sailing with the flotilla, practising your new skills, or return later in the season. Alternatively, if you have some experience, you could take your own yacht on flotilla in Greece and add an instructor for a three-day flotilla course. This course will increase your confidence and cover basic navigation skills, sailing techniques, mooring and anchoring. This is also a good refresher course if you have not skippered for a while. Mark Warner are offering Dinghy & Windsurf Foiling for summer 2018 at Lakitira Beach Resort in Kos and Levante Beach Resort in Rhodes. HEART OF GLASS The introduction of glass reinforced plastic, otherwise known as GRP, although not initially developed for boat builders, ultimately had a huge impact on the marine industry.

t is a sad but true reflection that the demands of modern wartime can often result in the greatest leaps forward in ideas and technologies. Thankfully, come peacetime, these innovations can be directed towards more friendly applications. One such wartime development, that of glass reinforced polyester, would have hugely significant implications for the world of small boat sailing and leisure boating. Pre-1939, most dinghy racing was still very much an elitist activity that took place in boats that had been lovingly - and expensively - hand crafted in wood. The workshops where boats were built would usually be ankle deep in wood shavings and redolent with the smell of freshly worked hardwood. Then came wartime and the supplies of wood, much of which was imported into the UK, quickly dried up. At the same time the pool of highly skilled workers either went into the forces or were redirected on to war work. NEXT BIG THING Material alternatives, such as the use of plywood, were press-ganged into use, but the next ‘big thing’ was already happening elsewhere. One of the drivers for the new development was yet another technological advance, that of radar. The sensitive equipment needed protection behind a shield or ‘radome’, which had to be transparent to the radar signals. The chosen material was a mix of glass fibres and a polyester resin which would become known as GRP.

The concept of using strands of fibre to strengthen an item was far from new, with examples dating back to ancient Egypt. Here, plant fibres were worked into clay to give their earthenware pots a greater strength against cracking. The modern take on the idea was to take thin strands of glass and then bed them into a layer of polyester resin. Both the technologies that gave us a commercially available supply of glass filament and the practical resin base hailed from the 1930s, but it would be those wartime demands that would rapidly accelerate the techniques needed to develop glass fibre mouldings. Relatively cheap, impervious to the weather and low maintenance, glass fibre held out huge promises for the future. EARLY APPLICATIONS By the start of the 1950s, GRP was starting to appear in the leisure marine industry, but by the standards of today,

the mouldings were fairly crude. These first applications mainly relied on ‘chopped-strand’ mat cloth. This was simply made and just consisted of short strands of glass fibre laid out in random fashion on to a flat surface and then fixed in place with an inert binder. The resin was then stippled on, with care being taken to ensure that there was a good ‘wetting’ of all the glass fibres by the resin. Although reasonably easy to do, these early techniques also highlighted some of the downsides of the new material. The rule of thumb is that chopped strand mat requires twice its weight in resin to achieve the required material strength. One of the most commonly used weights of chopped strand came in at 600gms/M², to which would be added 1.2kg of resin – and all this before any additional stiffening was added. For the boat builders of the day, GRP attracted a somewhat unsavoury reputation for being both heavy and ‘soft’ – the exact opposite of what was needed. Later on techniques would be developed that saw the glass fibre being woven into trickier to use, but much lighter, cloth. Not only was the weight of glass reduced, but the ratio of glass to resin would drop to 1:1. Now, with a 200gm/ M² cloth and just 200gm of resin, GRP would start to become a serious contender to wood as a preferred material for boat construction. FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS The additional development of polyester ‘gel-coats’, a thixotropic (i.e. had a high resistance to running) custard like paint that would not only give colour to the finished product but a high gloss, hard wearing finish was just more of the alchemy that was quickly replacing the traditional boatyard skills. The adoption of GRP also brought about a major shift in the demands for technical expertise. The high-end boat building skills were still required but in far less numbers and in a different way. The main task now was the very high degrees of exactitude needed when the mould was being made, because any mistakes at this point would be evident in every product that was then moulded. Once the moulds, the ‘tooling’ had been built, checked, then polished to a mirror finish, boat hulls could be churned out on a production line basis. The other major spin off from this change from boat building being a cottage industry to an industrial process was that with careful control of the lay-up, the amount of glass and resin used, all the boats taken from a mould would be identical. ONE DESIGN The old concept of hunting around for a boat builder who built ‘quick’ boats, often with a long waiting list, was replaced by the true one design, where all the boats from the mould are the same. Little wonder then that boats mass produced in this way, such as the Laser, where every one of the 200,000 plus hulls are identical, have probably done more to extend the reach of small boat racing out into Asia and the third world countries than any other boat. Volume production of boats using GRP helped drive the huge expansion in sailing as an easily accessible sport, but at the expense of losing the romance of traditional boat building. The life of GRP, though, was itself short-lived, as yet even more high tech methods of construction were developed, with many of these being spin-offs from applications that started with the military!

EXPERTS’ FORUM STAYING SAFE WITH GAS ON BOARD In addition to that, the regulators used on board have a limited working life, as do the flexible hoses in the gas locker and behind the cooker. Gas systems on board most vessels are, in the main, simple affairs. They start at the gas cylinder in the dedicated gas locker with a gas regulator attached, either directly or with a length of flexible hose. There should then be a continuous length of copper pipe into the galley area, where there should be a gas isolation valve (tap).

SAIL OR POWER? On a sailing boat, where there is a gimballed cooker, there should be a braided metal cooker hose joining the isolation valve to the cooker. On a powerboat, where the hob and cooker are fixed, these should ideally be connected to the isolation valve by rigid copper pipe. Lastly, somewhere in the

A quick call to your insurers will tell you how often they expect a gas safety inspection and whether they consider you to be a competent gas engineer. Safety on board should be every skipper’s priority and gas should be right at the top of the list. In addition to arranging a gas safety inspection, a responsible owner might also consider installing a carbon monoxide alarm and a gas detector/alarm. Your gas engineer will advise you on both. LONDON CALLING Back for its 64th year, the London Boat Show returns this month to celebrate everything you can do on the water.

illed as the all-new London Boat Show, visitors to the now five-day event will discover a variety of exhibitors and an extensive range of boats along with new and returning attractions. There are big changes coming to this year’s show, which now starts slightly later in January. Incorporating the all-new Boating & Watersports Holiday Show, visitors will be able to get into the holiday spirit and plan their next water-based getaway. This is the first time in many years that the show has showcased narrowboats and inland boating holidays with a dedicated feature area. At the centre of the Holiday Show will be the Lock & Waterside Pub, an interactive area focusing on recreating the inland waterways whilst demonstrating the variety of overseas and UK holidays available. There will be a replica lock showcasing

This steel tug was built in 1946 for the London Midland and Scottish Railway for towing on the Shropshire Union Canal and the River Weaver. holidays, making it the perfect time to further promote sea charter, flotilla, inland hire and boating activity breaks.” The event will also offer further attractions including: Beach Club & Activity Pool, Classic Boat Collection, Practical Boat Owner Theatre, the Legends Theatre, the Black & White Bar and The Yachtsman’s Champagne Bar. Packed with sailing superstars from past and present, the Legends Theatre, hosted by Sky Sports presenter Alec Wilkinson, will be at the heart of the show. Sessions throughout the day will feature interviews with boating legends including Vendée Globe veteran, Mike Golding, and recordbreaking yachtswoman, Dee Caffari. Visitors will also be able to get involved with question and answer sessions, a unique chance to put questions directly to sporting heroes and experts who can provide top advice. The changes to the show are clearly being well received in the marine industry with the news that this year’s event will welcome at least 23 per cent new companies and brands. New names, including Bryant Boat UK and Ullman Sails, will be showcasing kit and boats of all shapes and sizes. At the time of writing more than 300 exhibitors are known to be displaying the best the marine world has to offer with debuts to the world and European stage. At least 200 boats are already confirmed on the boardwalks alone, which is more than at the 2017 show. Of the show’s changes Chris Manners of Sealine told All at Sea: “We are delighted to see the London Boat Show plans for 2018. It is a key show in the calendar of events we exhibit at around the world and moving it away from the Christmas period offers our team valuable time to prepare for the show and the show season ahead.” Also speaking about the changes, Ian Cooke at Onward Trading Company added: “We were delighted that the London Boat Show has become a five-day event. This change has made exhibiting at this well-respected event a viable option for us and we are excited to be back, joining many of our fellow British Marine members and international counterparts exhibiting in 2018.”

VISIT THE RYA STAND WB034 The RYA has a wealth of knowledge and information available for visitors, from getting out on the water with the whole family, to improving boating and finding the right training course. RYA experts will be there to share advice and answer questions from boating abroad to buying a secondhand boat. Visitors can also find out more about the offers available to RYA members from member reward partners. As well as the free advice on the stand, RYA publications will be available with a 20 per cent boat show discount for members.

BEACH CLUB & ACTIVITY POOL

New to the London Boat Show, the Beach Club is where the family can learn together and get set up for the next family adventure. The Activity Pool is the place to get on the water and experience dinghy sailing, kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn new skills under the watchful eye of the fully trained team of Rockley Watersports. Classic Boat Collection This year the popular Classic Boat Collection will be at the front of the London Boat Show. Curated from several sources and brought together for the first time these boats will offer visitors a slice of the past set against the modern yachts of today. Practical Boat Owner Theatre The Practical Boat Owner Theatre gives the opportunity to find out the latest tips and skills. Discover how to kit up for a cruise, what to take and how to cruise on a budget. Or learn when is the best time to use a jib or how to interface new and old electronics. Legends Theatre Hosted by Sky TV’s Alec Wilkinson this is the place to find legends of the sailing world, familiar voices from the radio, adventurers and pioneers. Bespoke London This area is dedicated to craftsmanship, service and innovation. Set around a champagne bar, it will offer both global and boutique brands bringing together luxury accessories for the boating lifestyle. Not forgetting... THE BOATS ON SHOW Over 35 boats are to make their debut, spanning across the powerboat, sail, inland and watersports sectors. Making their global launch at the event will be the Princess V50, Rodman Spirit 42 Coupe, Hanse 348 and Flying Mantis trimaran. Two inland vessels, the Whaly 450 and Aqueduct Marina’s 25ft Beetle Boat, will be making their UK and show debuts respectively, and the Hobie Mirage Compass kayak will be seen at the show for the first time. Sunseeker International has been a notable part of the London Boat Show for 60 years, and will return in force this month. Of their return to London Sean Robertson, from Sunseeker International, said: “We are delighted to be returning once again to the world-famous London Boat Show. The new changes that have been announced

For life ‘al fresco’ the exterior decks have dedicated foredeck dining and sun bed areas complemented by an optional pram hood canopy and drawer refrigeration. Going into 2018, The Targa 63 GTO has also been nominated for a European Powerboat Award and, alongside the Fairline Targa 53 OPEN, is a Motor Boat & Yachting Award finalist. Fairline Yachts tell us the Squadron 53 and Targa 53 OPEN (top left) will be on display at London. The Targa 53 Open is a luxury cruiser for entertaining and relaxation. BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH BEN WILLOWS, CEO AT UKSA, THE YOUTH CHARITY.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH UKSA?

I first worked at UKSA in 2001 as a professional coach and I have been fortunate enough to work for long spells in the Caribbean and Australia during my time at UKSA. I took on the role of CEO in 2016, having been Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Operations previously.

HOW HAS THE ORGANISATION CHANGED IN THAT TIME?

We have continually developed training programmes that cover the yachting, watersports and superyacht industry and we have grown from seeing 1,500 to 10,000 people coming through our doors each year.

WHAT IS YOUR SAILING BACKGROUND? I was brought up in the land locked Midlands, but thanks to my dad’s passion for being on the water, I learnt to sail at a young age. I knew early on that I wanted to pursue a career on the water, rather than taking the traditional academic route. I was part of the GBR sailing team and went on to campaign in 18ft Skiffs and 49ers in Sydney. I have also worked and raced on several high-profile yachts around the globe.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT UKSA?

UKSA is a youth charity that uses the power of the sea to transform the lives of thousands of young people each year, from all around the UK. We are also a centre of excellence for maritime training and career progression.

TELL US ABOUT THE ROLE’S BIGGEST CHALLENGES. Currently my biggest challenge is raising the £3 million needed to support the capital investment programme.

I love that it is a level playing field – once you are out there it does not matter what your background is, whether you are young or old, male or female - you are making the decisions!

YOU WILL HAVE MET MANY OF THE SAILING GREATS. WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU MOST?

When you look at the success of the British Sailing Team over the last five Olympics, it is incredibly inspiring to see such a high level of success from so many British sailors and now for there to be a proper British America’s Cup challenger, with Sir Ben Ainslie, is brilliant for sailing. HOW DID UKSA CELEBRATE ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2016?

We launched our capital investment programme - an ambitious plan for the next 30 years of UKSA that will enable us to update our facilities to provide flexible, modular accommodation and training suites. We will then be able offer more courses to schools, groups and young people at any one time.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR JOB?

Spending time coaching and working with so many young people over the years and playing a part in them achieving success and turning their lives around. In my role now I lead and facilitate the work UKSA does. To see the yachts heading out to sea and the children on the slipway splashing about, knowing UKSA is making a difference to people’s lives is an amazing feeling

To run a course, a club would need five single handed boats, such as Toppers or

THE NEXT STEP

For those with more experience, the Race Coach Level 3 offers the opportunity for club coaches to take their coaching to the next level. Newly launched last year, the course is delivered over a six-month period with candidates initially applying for an Assessment Weekend allowing sailors and mentors to check whether the course is for them. For those who have racked up at least 50 hours coaching experience over the past two years, the Level 3 programme consists of two course weekends as well as mentoring and support. www.rya.org.uk/courses-training/ teaching/race-coaches

EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Being a good club racer with current racing knowledge is all the experience needed to get a foot on the coaching ladder. From the age of 16, prospective coaches who are UK sailors or working with UK clubs can apply for a course near them.

A qualified RYA Level 2 Racing Coach is a good club racer with a personal knowledge of club and/or regional racing and a broad basis of coaching skills. After qualification, coaches can deliver and award Start, Intermediate and Advanced Racing courses, working at RYA affiliated clubs and recognised training centres. Depending on your club racing background, courses are run for dinghy, keelboat or windsurfing coaches.

SPOTLIGHT ON: THE WHEELYBOAT TRUST The Wheelyboat Trust is a small national charity dedicated to providing mobility impaired people of all ages with access to waterborne activities in specially designed wheelchair accessible Wheelyboats. WHEELYBOAT MODELS Wheelyboats are open powered day-boats, the majority of which in the early days were placed on trout fisheries. The Trust has designed seven different Wheelyboat models since 1984: Mk I, Mk II, Mk III, Mk IV, Coulam 15, Coulam 16 and Coulam Wheelyboat V20. Since 2005 the range of models has expanded and the majority of Wheelyboat projects taking shape now are for multipurpose use - pleasure boating, nature watching, powerboating - on inland and inshore waters. The two most popular Wheelyboat

models, the aluminium Mk III and the GRP Coulam Wheelyboat V20, have bow doors that lower to form a ramp for roll-on, roll-off access. On board, the floors have level access to all corners of the boat, including the helm, as all Wheelyboats are designed to be driven from a wheelchair. The role of the Trust is to design, build, supply and fund the provision of Wheelyboats. They work with groups and organisations to help them acquire a Wheelyboat, in order to provide the service to others. BOATS IN USE A fully-fledged inshore powerboat capable of speeds in excess of 30mph, the V20’s capability and capacity is making it a very popular model with Sailability groups and outward-bound centres.

THE charity has been operating for more than 30 years and, so far, has supplied 187 Wheelyboats to projects on a wide variety of waters. Since the launch of the latest Wheelyboat model, the Coulam Wheelyboat V20 in 2014, they have never been busier and the future for the Trust and mobility impaired people who benefit from their work is looking very rosy. The Trust came about as a result of a farmer’s spinal injury and his friend’s desire for the two of them to carry on fishing together. Access on and around water for wheelchair users can be quite tricky, so when Bill Buchanan became

disabled, it could easily have spelled the end of his interest in fly-fishing. His close friend, Alan Faulkner, had other ideas and set out on a quest to design and build a wheelchair accessible boat. In the early 1980s Alan’s idea began to take shape. The Handicapped Anglers Trust was formed in 1984 and with charities such as Action Research, Henry Smith and The Fishmongers’ Company providing vital early funding support, the official launch of the Wheelyboat by HRH Prince Charles took place at Fishmongers’ Hall in September 1985. Then, 19 years later, the charity was renamed The Wheelyboat Trust.

It is also the perfect craft to enable disabled people to participate in the RYA’s new Powerability scheme launched in September at the Southampton Boat Show. Through Powerability, disabled people can undertake recognised RYA training and acquire specially developed certification in powerboat skippering. The scheme dovetails into the internationally recognised RYA training schemes and will be an important stepping stone to increased participation in powerboating by disabled people. Wheelyboats operate all over the UK from the north of Scotland to west Cornwall in some stunning locations. The development of the V20 has been a very successful forward step for the Trust and plans are afoot for a 24’ version with a capacity for 12 passengers and crew. www.wheelyboats.org

lot has changed, food wise, since we last visited this attractive Georgian Town, linked to Yarmouth by the constantly crossing White

Link ferries. If you are lucky enough to get a spot on the Quay you can take a gentle stroll into town. Pulling in on a weekday I head straight to Greedo. I pass the Elderflower on the cobbles, which I have not tried yet, then a good pub called King’s Head, but I am after kedgeree and Rarebit fondue with brioche soldiers. Greedo is a cosy, hygge sort of a café that offers breakfast all day. The coffee is great, served in dumpy blue mugs, with a bite of brownie alongside. The kedgeree is light and fragrant, with flakes of smoked haddock and a poached egg atop – and just £5. As is the stack of pancakes. The crispy oak smoked bacon roll is only £4, and the table next to me are taking full advantage. The burgers and buttermilk fried chicken look popular, as my late breakfast blends with the early lunch crowd. This place has a great vibe, with ex superyacht chef Jane Catchpole handling the tiller with some style. The drawback? They are not open at weekends – yet. So, get here as soon as you can; these prices cannot last. Follow on Instagram for updates on pop-ups. We have our eye on their fondue evening and are dusting off the salopettes…

THE SHIPYARD

We visited Food 4 Sail last time we were here, opposite Force 4, with parking in Berthon’s yard. This is now The Shipyard, with a wet fish counter to one-side and the restaurant to the right. Chefs Paul and Liam run a tidy galley here and are experienced pros. I stumble upon Ivan Coryn, ex Hood Sails, and coffee morphs into the working lunch deal of £10. It might be a limited menu, but Ivan’s warm chorizo Scotch Egg with runny yolk is top dog and my fish and chips are not bad. Some great cocktails are served here and wine is provided by The Solent Cellar, so they keep it local. Fresh fish is never going to be cheap (and neither should it be), but you will get reliable cooking and quality produce here. A treat for the carnivores? A sharing platter of 1.1kg roast rib of beef, wild mushrooms, fries, salad & Béarnaise at £70.

THE REVIEW

The Haven Bar & Restaurant has also seen some changes, all for the better in my opinion, with Helen Wood now managing the restaurant, which surely has the best view for miles. She has worked here for years, seeing different styles come and go, so she knows what her customers want. Visiting on a Wednesday, I watch Helen’s warm welcome and the tables fill up around me, with a good mix of locals, boat owners and autumn walkers. The menus have something for every taste, pocket and appetite, ranging from sandwiches all the way up to a whole baked fish to share. It is good to see moules on the kids’ menu – this sums up the thoughtfulness of the team here. I am having lunch with Yacht Havens Group’s Jonathan Cook, so we share starters and puddings. First up is the salt, pepper and soy squid, a glorious bowl of colour. The generous squid spirals sit on a cherry tomato, chili and rocket salad. Then on to the Indonesian Fish Curry for me, with Gurnard joining the prawns and mussels. It is just the right amount of heat here; fresh, punchy spices in the creamy sauce, served with sticky rice gorgeous. Jonathan has the ever popular fish and chips, a generous golden hunk of succulent cod, crushed peas with bacon and a good bowl of tartare. The desserts are all handmade on site, and the wonderful cakes are made by an ex member of staff who now cooks from home. We have the lemon tarte and it was the right choice. Citrus

sharp with that lovely smooth custard only proper pastry chefs seem to achieve. Sticky toffee pudding would be a good second choice. Most popular here? It has to be the fish. Regulars love the fish to share – today it was Brill with capers, samphire and lemon butter at £40 for two. The excellent fish and chips comes in at £14.50, and you can have Moules Marinière as a starter (£10.50) or main (£17.50), but there is plenty for the carnivore too – the burger and ribeye being firm favourites. SOLENT CELLAR

The Solent Cellar is opposite M&S (along with Waitrose probably providing the best deli options, though there is a small indie in Angel Courtyard), a pleasant hike up the High Street. This independent wine store is an Aladdin’s Cave of treasure, and with the guidance of the knowledgeable duo of Simon and Heather you will find the right bottle. They also do pop-ups and work with the local restaurants, so keep an eye out.

THE HIKE

The Lymington Yacht Haven is a great starting point for walks along the salt marshes. You can go as far as Keyhaven (and beyond on the Solent Way) but short cuts are available for the hungry.

by the fire or head to the open dining room with panoramic views. The Sunday brunch options, with live music every weekend, fill the place up, and the roast goes down a storm. The cocktail list is well chosen and local gin and tonics are served in generous Spanish style goblets. We like the pink peppercorn garnish with the local Dancing Cow gin. The wine list is simple but contains favourites Gruner Veltiner and a good Pinot Noir, but you can push the boat out with a fine Meursault or Gevrey-Chambertin if the mood takes you.

FAST LEARNERS This is the story of the inner-city London school that took on the Rolex Fastnet Race.

n 6 August 2017, a group of eight students from Greig City Academy in Haringey undertook what was possibly the biggest challenge that a state school has ever undertaken; to compete in the Rolex Fastnet Race. They were the only school in the race this year and organisers say that they are not aware of any entries from comprehensive schools before. The 605 mile course is one of the world classics in sailing and this year saw a record-breaking entry of 368 yachts taking to the start line.

YEARS OF PREPARATION

Four key crew members from the Greig City Academy Sailing Team pioneered this project: Montel Fagan-Jordan (team captain), Camilo Orobio, Shabazz Patterson and Karim Ming. In a time where it is easy to say no and put up barriers to reduce risks taken by schools, what made this project so special was that it was driven by the students from the start. The students raised in excess of £150,000 by carrying out talks and applying to trust funds and charities. In 2017 the project eventually won the backing of a City of London firm, Pioneer Underwriters, who became the title sponsor. There was four years of training and three qualifying races, of which two took them to France (Le Havre and St Malo) and one to Cornwall and back. The crew had a steep learning curve, especially about how to improve crew communication, particularly during night sailing and the races involving multiple days at sea. The 47ft yacht Scaramouche, a 1981 US entry into the Admiral’s Cup, was purchased by the school in 2015. Since then extensive modifications and upgrades have been carried out to reduce the risks and adapt the boat to the

crew. The interior layout was altered so the team could run their watch system properly and half the crew could sleep while the other half sailed. Many companies in the marine industry got on board with the project, which has been crucial. North Sails provided news sails, Ocean Yacht Systems all new standing rigging, Spinlock the deck hardware and lifejackets and English Braids and Marlow Ropes renewed all the running rigging. The day before the race was not only a big day in terms of boat preparation, it was also a chance for Montel and Shabazz to meet the race media where they, along with, teacher and instigator of this project Jon Holt, were interviewed by national and international media. They even shared the stage at the race press conference with the eventual race winners.

Q: MONTEL, YOU ARE THE TEAM CAPTAIN AND PRIMARY HELMSMAN ON BOARD SCARAMOUCHE. TALK US THROUGH THE RACE FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE. A: The start of the race was something I had never experienced up until this point. There were lots of boats and even more spectator boats so near, and my role was to stay focused and lead the team and the crew safely over the line, so we could then start to get into our own groove and routine. It was great to be part of the fleet racing out through the Solent and to have so many spectator boats cheering us on too. It took slightly longer than we had hoped to get to the rock due to light, unfavourable winds for Scaramouche,

and then when we finally got there it took a number of tacks to get around due to adverse tide and very little wind. It did mean we got a good, long look at it. Once round we could pop the kite and Plymouth was on the radar. The highlight for me was helming downwind. Scaramouche tends to roll a lot downwind and I was helming at night for four hours at a time with the big masthead spinnakers up. When the wind was 20+ knots Scaramouche was surfing. I had to concentrate on every single wave because one wrong turn and we could gybe or if I turned too hard the other way we could have gybed. I felt like on the surf the boat was on a knife-edge. I had a huge responsibility to the whole crew to concentrate because broaching could cause injuries. I have been watching lots of YouTube videos of Lawrie Smith’s

Q: JON, TELL US ABOUT GETTING TO THE START LINE AND YOUR THOUGHTS WHEN YOU REACHED PLYMOUTH. A: As a teacher, you want to give your students every possible opportunity, and as head of Outdoor Education I may have taken this a little further. However, I see what I have done is giving the students of Greig City Academy the chance to go sailing and realise their true potential within the sport. It has not been easy, and we had many challenges (and continue to have challenges) along the way, but with the full support of the Head Teacher and the wonderful backing from the industry, I know that we have done all we can to reduce risks in an era where it is so easy to say no to ideas like this. We give the students a chance to try new things and find new opportunities that are perhaps not available to students from an inner-city London school where 70 per cent of the students are deemed disadvantaged.

Q: SHABAZZ, YOU ARE THE TRIMMER AND CREW MORALE BOOSTER ON BOARD. TELL US MORE ABOUT HOW THIS RACE HAS CHANGED YOU AND WHAT YOUR PLANS ARE GOING FORWARD. A: I was really concerned before the Fastnet. All the offshore races we have done before were in the English Channel. I did not know what the waves would be like after we cleared Lands End, so it was an unknown for me. I thought the time on the boat would be a problem, but it really was not. We all got along so well that being on the boat was good fun. When I saw all the professional yachts racing I thought we might be out of our depth on our 36-year-old yacht. I am more confident now in my own ability. I now know I can cope with long passages and I know that I can cope with rough weather. I also now understand that the sailing world are really keen to help. Everyone was very nice and friendly during and after the race and a lot of companies really helped us get to the start line. I have learned that if you want something, you have to ask for it. Scaramouche finished 144 overall, with a school student led team on an old yacht. They shared their story all the way round, and went on to win the Musto Rolex Fastnet Race Media Prize at the race prize-giving. Their achievements have not gone unnoticed and it is interesting to see that Greig City Academy, a once undersubscribed school, is now oversubscribed. GETTING IT RIGHT WITH MARINE DISTRESS SIGNALS

CHRIS FEIBUSCH, HEAD OF GLOBAL MARKETING AT WESCOM SIGNAL AND RESCUE, A LEADING SUPPLIER OF MARINE DISTRESS SIGNALS FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS. The most universally recognised signal indicating distress offshore is the sight of a pyrotechnic flare illuminating the sky. Pyrotechnic flares save lives every day, with each individual product designed to suit a specific emergency situation, or to initiate a specific action. They should only be used in an emergency, to alert someone to your distress, to identify or

pin-point your location and to indicate wind direction and/or strength. For example, the Red Parachute Rocket is a long-range signalling device with a 30,000 candela red flare suspended on a parachute deployed at an altitude of 300m and burns for a minimum of 40 seconds as it descends at a controlled rate of no more than 5m/s. Red Handheld flares and Orange Smoke signals function as distress alerting signals, as well as being one of the most effective ways of pinpointing a position during a search and rescue operation. It is not always possible, or indeed necessary, to have a large selection of marine distress signals on board, however it is advisable to have something in the event of an accident. With this in mind, there is a range of distress signals that offer a compact yet powerful alternative to larger, more commercial flares. The Pains Wessex Personal or Compact Distress Signal kits contain either nine or three red, aerial flare cartridges and a penjector firing mechanism, all enclosed

in a tough, water-resistant case. These are ideal when space is an issue, such as for kayakers, PWC users and windsurfers. RNLI EXCHANGE The RNLI is a major user of Pains Wessex marine distress signals and recently visited the company’s Bremerhaven factory, with a technical exchange and product feedback. Allen Stevens, Senior Engineer (Marine Safety) says reciprocal visits have been enlightening and have helped to gain a richer understanding. “Being afforded the opportunity to visit the factory in Bremerhaven has enabled me to understand the difficulties inherent in the manufacture of pyrotechnic products. It has helped both myself and WesCom Signal and Rescue staff to gain a new and more informed understanding of our individual requirements. “The reciprocal visits with Thorsten Bose visiting the RNLI in Poole and myself to Germany have proven that a personal approach can lead to a better mutual understanding.”

GET IT RIGHT These are life-saving devices and cutting corners and regulations puts lives at risk. Fake or cheap replicas of these products just cannot have this level of quality built in. That is why it is vital that clients purchase products from approved distributors to make sure that they receive the correct manuals, labels and documentation. MDL Marinas has been shortlisted for the Boating Business Environment Award at the annual British Marine Trades Association and Boating Business Awards that will take place this month. The nomination is thanks to its work on The Solent Oyster Restoration Project, which is led by Blue Marine Foundation, and in collaboration with MDL Marinas as well as Land Rover BAR and the University of Portsmouth. It is working to restore the native oyster to the Solent, which once supported the biggest oyster fishery in Europe. The European flat oyster or native oyster is capable of filtering

WINTER REFIT THE owner of a performance Shipman 63 Carbon Yacht approached Fox’s Marina and Boatyard to haul, layup and do various refit work on his new carbon fibre flying machine. With her 3m draft and hydraulic lifting bulb keel, handling the yacht and laying her up ashore required some care and ingenuity from the Fox’s yard team. Work being planned for the winter includes a new epoxy bottom finish, including Coppercoat antifouling, various on board engineering and electrical work, and modifications to the deck-stepped carbon rig allowing for the installation of new rod rigging in preference to the current ultra light, albeit high maintenance, PBO standing rigging. This ultra-modern, carbon yacht joins a number of quality cruising yachts already undergoing refits at Fox’s this winter

including a Discover 67, two Oyster 56s and an Oyster 485, in addition to two wellknown sail training yachts, the Cirdan Trust’s Linton Hope classic yawl, Duet, and the Ocean Youth Trust North’s steel-hulled James Cook.

NEW navigational lights have been installed to help night sailors on the Beaulieu River. Five sets of buoys have each been fitted with flashing beacons, making it even easier for visitors to the Beaulieu River to reach their journey’s end at night. The markers light the way between Gins, at the Solent end of the river, and Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour. Additional lights have been added to markers that line the channel between Gins and the river’s mouth. Beaulieu River Harbour Master Wendy Stowe said: “These navigational lights are already proving to be a big help to visitors and mooring holders to find their way at night. By ensuring that vessels always keep to the main channel in the deepest, safest part of the river, the lights are helping to improve navigational safety. “This is a huge boost to help those who are heading for the marina at the end of a long journey or making an early morning start.” The new navigational lights are the latest in a series of investments to improve and update services and facilities, while still preserving the natural charm and unique character of the Beaulieu River. www.beaulieuriver.co.uk

THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS Over the past few months we have been looking at how marinas are changing and adapting to the needs of their berth holders and the rising number of non-boating visitors.

e are seeing marinas involved in more and more partnerships with outside agencies, commercial operations and charities. One such partnership is between MDL Marinas and Beds on Board. Tim Ludlow explained the new partnership between Beds On Board and MDL Marinas: “Successful partnerships are about transparency and shared goals, so the decision to partner with MDL felt natural from our first meeting, over lunch at the 2016 London Boat Show. We both felt that marinas must become destinations in order to attract new customers and that boat owners would welcome the choice to help offset their costs.

“We also knew there would be challenges and objections, and so shortly after agreeing the partnership we set off on a tour of all the MDL marinas in the UK, covering over 1,200 miles and more than 40 presentations to meet dozens of marina staff and MDL members. “The partnership was well received by marina staff as most had some exposure to the concept through Beds on Board or the likes of Airbnb, but they had not had any visibility on which boats were listed or when guests were due. What was interesting to us was that the main reason for wanting this transparency was to allow managers to welcome guests to the marina. “Marina managers appreciated that this was an opportunity to meet new customers and to build trust, which in

turn helped them feel more comfortable managing what we have come to know are the most common considerations: security, health and safety, protecting the marina environment and delivering a positive marina experience.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

“The roadshow allowed us to hear from a wide audience and we saw that these common concerns could be addressed quite easily and that the underlying concerns were really fears of change and the unknown. All of the marina managers were confident that they would manage Beds on Board guests in the same way they manage members and visitors; it is just business as usual. “This is great for the industry. It is vital that these new visitors are made welcome and enjoy their visit. This is the first real touch point for the marine industry; these are the potential boat owners of the future and they need to buy into the lifestyle before they even consider investing any more time, let alone money. For their next experience they may look to charter or they may even pop into the brokerage!”

“Love and joy come to you and to you your wassail too,” goes a traditional Yuletide song. It is not a carol but rather the basis for a mediaeval (1600s at least) January ritual for farmhands to go a-wassailing – meaning to go round the houses to ask for, demand even, food and drink gifts from their gentry landowners in return for being compliant and industrious workers in the coming year. Understanding this makes sense of another wassail song, “We wish you a merry Christmas…” and then “Bring us some figgy pudding…” and “We won’t go until we get some…” Something like a New Year’s version of Hallowe’en trick or treating. The traditional date to ‘go a-wassailing’ is Twelfth Night, 6 January, but wassailing enthusiasts prefer ‘Olde Twelvey Night’, 17 January, which would have been the correct date before the introduction of today’s Gregorian calendar in 1752. So a great excuse for a winter party at home or the sailing club.

MAKING A WASSAIL

The ‘wassail’ itself is the liquid contents of a punch bowl from which the landlord filled the peasants’ drinking mugs. It would have been a hearty combination of hot ale, apple chunks, spices and mead. Alcoholic enough to create good humour but not so strong as to encourage fighting or falling over. The food would have been pork chunks or pie or sausages, English cheese and farmhouse bread. Hot ale is not suitable these days, but a rustic artisanal mulled cider would do nicely with any kind of pork and/ or apples.

For mulled cider wassail, pour two litres of dry cider (a basic brand such as Sainsbury’s Original for just £4, five per cent abv) into a large saucepan, add a quarter of a pint of orange juice, a chopped lemon and the grated zest of an orange which is then sliced into the brew, four cinnamon sticks (or a teaspoonful of ground cinnamon) and a teaspoon of cloves. That is the basic. For a super punch, add a large wine glass measure of dark sherry or spiced rum - Sailor Jerry’s dark spiced rum £20 for 70cl at 40 per cent or Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Gold £17 a litre at 35 per cent, both at Sainsbury’s and other mainstream supermarkets. Warm only – do not boil – and serve garnished with a slice of raw apple and a few sultanas. It is worth suffering the winter weather for. Alternatively you can buy ready mulled red wine, which can be warmed and served as is or customised with a little cinnamon and cloves. Sainsbury’s have a German mulled wine, £4.50 for 75cl at 11 per cent, which is a warm, rich red wine with citrus fruit flavours combined with cinnamon, cloves and vanilla. Or there is one made in the UK from imported wine for £3 a bottle at eight per cent. An easy way to make your own is to choose a bargainpriced red and buy the spices as pre-packed mulled wine sachets. Morrison’s have a Schwartz pack for just £1.42. Add one teaspoon of brown sugar per bottle and slices of orange and lemon, then warm it up in a saucepan and your wine wassail is ready for the party.
