New chapter for Mary rose The Mary Rose has embarked upon the next stage in her long and remarkable history. This chapter of the Mary Rose Museum will see a major transformation in the visitor experience. The walls that currently separate visitors from the ship will be replaced with glazing to provide unrestricted views of the hull from bow to stern in all nine galleries and on all three levels. For the first time since she was raised from the Solent in 1982 visitors will also be able to share the same space as the Mary Rose, entering the upper deck through an air lock, allowing visitors to experience the full splendour and magnitude of the ship.
In order for this work to be carried out the main museum is now closed to visitors. The entrance pavilion, café and shop will remain open and there will be a small display of artefacts, original and replicas, along with a new, short film narrated by Dan Snow for visitors to see before the museum re-opens summer 2016. The only 16th century warship on display in the world, the Mary Rose has been under-going continuous conservation since she was raised in. The hull was first sprayed with a mist of fresh chilled water and then with a water soluble wax from 1994. In April 2013 the Mary Rose entered a stage of controlled

JeReMy houghton has been named the official artist in residence of Land Rover BAR. A specialist in sport and flight, houghton has an impressive background. Jeremy was an official BT Olympic Artist for London 2012 and has also spent time as artist in residence at highgrove for hRh the Prince of Wales and at Windsor Castle for hM the Queen. his interest in the America’s Cup grew out of his work at the Olympics as he explained: “My background is as a sporting artist and when I paint I work with movement, light, time and space. I did a lot of work around the 2012 Olympics and spent time in Weymouth where the sailing events were held - the light, the spray, the movement and the speed mean the artistic possibilities of sailing are endless. “When I heard Ben Ainslie was putting together a team for the America’s Cup it was very much at the top of my list of projects. The America’s Cup is so exciting and the sailing is immense.” he will spend one week per month at the team’s home in Portsmouth through to the America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017, attending

The paintings will also be used to help raise money for the team’s official charity, the 1851 Trust, through exhibitions and the sale of the works. Jeremy said: “I hope that I am in some way able to get young people from lots of different backgrounds into sailing and help show them that it can be about design and technology and science as well as the actual act of sailing.”
Scott takeS crown with day to Spare froM paGe oNe: A dominant Giles Scott extended his winning streak to 25-months at the Finn Gold Cup in Takapuna, New Zealand, defending his World Championship crown with a day and two races to spare. Scott now becomes one of only six sailors in the 60-year history of the Finn Worlds to claim a hat-trick of victories, with Sir Ben Ainslie, whose Olympic title Scott is hoping to keep in British hands this year, the only man with more Gold Cup wins. Giles, who adds this 2015 Worlds victory to his successes in the 2011 and 2014 editions, said: “The last couple of months have been tricky to manage
because we have been testing these new boats that have just come out, so to be able to come here and show good form and win with a couple of races to go is great and I could not really ask for more than that. Scott not only has his sights on Rio glory this year but also in making a further dent towards his America’s Cup boss Ainslie’s six-win Finn Gold Cup record. “This event holds a huge amount of history and heritage to it and it is certainly a regatta that everyone wants to win. To be lucky enough to win it three times is great. There is another one before the Games so hopefully it is not my last Gold Cup win!”

ALL AT SEA JANUARY 2016
ALL ABOARD SEVEN HOUR CHRISTMAS DAY RESCUE By Jane Hyde
WELCOME to the first issue of All at Sea in 2016 and it is a packed one with all your favourites plus a couple of special features to get the year started in style. We are lucky enough in this country to have an amazing number of boat shows and events throughout the year including the hugely popular London and Southampton Boat Shows. So 2016 kicks off with the London Boat Show which, as always, has some very interesting boats making their debut along with lots of cool kit for the new season. There are many attractions to see during your visit and so our special preview guide on page 20 will make essential reading before you head to ExCel. As well as boats and kits you could also check out the boating holiday exhibitors while you are at the show. Now is a great time to start planning where you plan to go this year and with so much choice out there we have put together a guide to finding the best holidays afloat. This month, on page 14, we look at the types of holidays available and important considerations you need to think about before making your final choices. Next month we will conclude with a guide to popular destinations along with some more unusual boating holidays.
Will you be booking your holiday in August? Remember it is now officially an Olympic year and so we will all be going sport crazy in the summer. Let us hope that Giles Scott, this month’s cover story, continues his winning streak and brings home gold – following in Sir Ben Ainslie’s very illustrious footsteps. While we will be getting behind the British team at the Olympics in August there will be plenty of other opportunities to support our sailors. One of the most significant this year is, of course, the America’s Cup World Series. Before returning to the UK in July, the Series continues in February in Muscat, Oman. I am sure Sir Ben and his team are working hard for a great result to keep them in contention for the Cup. On a completely different note I went to Brick, a LEGO show, in London with my children. We were amazed by the LEGO creations on show and could not resist sharing a few of the nautical displays with you below. Check out the All at Sea Facebook page for more pictures. If you, or your family, has any marine LEGO builds you would like to share send in the photos or post them on our Facebook page. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk
FISHGUARD’S RNLI crew had a dramatic end to their Christmas Day celebrations after being called out to assist a yacht making its way from Porthmadog to Cardiff. The two yachtsmen on board the 30ft yacht found themselves failing to make headway in the demanding sea conditions. Fishguard RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat launched at 4.00pm and located the yacht 35 miles north-north-east of Fishguard. Attempts were made to attach a towline but the dark and appalling conditions rendered this impossible as the two yachtsmen were incapacitated and unable to assist the lifeboat crew. Volunteer crewman Ben John, the hero of the day, was transferred onto the yacht and managed to establish the towline onto the bow of the heaving yacht and the lifeboat then commenced the tow towards the coast in the hope of obtaining a degree of shelter from the worsening conditions.

By now it was near 8.00pm and the seas were very rough with 50 knot wind strengths. As the stricken yacht began to take on water the decision was made to head for Newquay harbour with assistance from Newquay RNLI. The Fishguard crew finally made it home at 11.00pm.
Coxswain Paul Butler said: “The crew train and train and never fail to come up with the goods when required. This Christmas Day they were exceptional in very demanding conditions. I would like to thank our Newquay colleagues for their invaluable assistance and support.”
Museum welcomes WWII motorboat
FROM rescuing fallen airmen in the Second World War, to a much-loved ferry service, Rescue Motor Launch 497 is now a museum treasure, joining the National Museum of the Royal Navy. RML 497 served with the 62nd ML Flotilla at Portland until January 1944. She then undertook anti-submarine target towing duties, in Kirkwall, before being sent to Appledore. She joined the 69th ML Flotilla at Felixstowe. She was involved in a commando raid on the Channel Isles following D-Day. RML 497 played an active part during
the Second World War rescuing downed airmen including other difficult and sometimes secretive roles. RML 497 was sold off after the war in 1947 and entered service with the Western Lady Ferry between Brixham and Torquay as Western Lady III. During 2007 Western Lady III left South Devon but returned in 2009 when she was purchased by Greenway Ferry to once again grace the waters of Torbay and Dartmouth, carrying many thousands of passengers. She was renamed Fairmile and in 2013 was returned to her wartime colours.
A Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £90,600 was secured for the project, with both the NMRN and the Coastal Forces Heritage Trust raising £5,000 each. Stuart McLeod, Head of HLF South East, said: “These vessels’ daring missions is a little-known part of the UK’s naval history. Thanks to National Lottery players, this investment will bring the best surviving example of a Fairmile to Portsmouth, creating an exciting new attraction for the Historic Dockyard and ensuring the contribution of those who worked on this vessel is much better known.”
END OF TOUGHEST CLIPPER RACE

LMAX Exchange crossed the line ahead of the other 11 competitors in the toughest Clipper race so far sailing 2,088nm from Albany to Sydney with winds gusting up to 50 knots and lumpy sea conditions creating an exhilarating and challenging race to the end. GREAT Britain took second followed by Garmin. LMAX Exchange took the maximum 17 points available by also winning the Ocean Sprint (an extra two points) and Scoring Gate (an extra three points) and regained its overall lead in the Clipper 2015-16 Race. GREAT Britain Skipper Peter Thornton said: “It was a tough race and I am very pleased with the boat and crew. 12 hours ago I was getting very stressed and was thinking I could not get the boat to go any faster, and a couple of things changed, and it shows that you can
never give up. We just pipped Ash and his Garmin crew at the end. GREAT Britain crew member and former Olympic Sprinter Abi Oyepitan said Race 4 was the toughest thing she had ever done in her life. “I’m really pleased to be here but I am feeling really tired - it was really hard. The Southern Ocean was something else. It was treacherous actually and really, really hard work. It was constant with massive swells, massive winds. We heeled over a lot of the time and it was hard going, a real challenge. I think it was the hardest thing I have ever done actually, physically and mentally.“ Derry~Londonderry~Doire lead the overall standings followed by LMAX Exchange and GREAT Britain. Race 5, The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, began on Boxing Day.

DIY Moth heaDs to BerMuDa
Following last month’s Moth boat build story James Sainsbury and LunaSea have been sailing in the clear waters of Bermuda as part of the international Moth Championships, racing against not only Olympic sailors but also America’s Cup sailors. Grafham Water Centre’s Chief Instructor, James is still smiling from ear to ear having returned from the week’s long sailing in the beautiful waters of Bermuda. With some interesting weather conditions to contend with, James and LunaSea had an exciting regatta, with some good finishes through the week. Various parts of the boat were broken and put back together, but with the kind generosity of fellow sailors James was able to carry on and finish the regatta in a respectable 50th place. This time a year ago LunaSea was still being built in James’ front room, so it is quite an achievement. Whilst James waits for his pride and joy to return to UK shores, there is already a list growing daily of repairs and alterations to be made in readiness for the season ahead.
GREAT Britain claimed gold on the final day of the Para World Sailing Championships in Melbourne with John Robertson, Hannah Stodel (read more from Hannah on page 24) and Steve Thomas closing out a hard-fought victory in the Sonar class. The three-time Paralympians had had a long wait for their World Championship hat-trick, having last claimed Worlds golds back in 2005 and 2006. The trio’s last World Championship medal – a bronze – came three years ago, and with their eyes on selection for a fourth Paralympic Games at Rio, Steve Thomas said the victory in Melbourne has provided a timely confidence boost. “We sat down and said we wanted to win a gold medal at the Worlds and we have delivered on that. Selection is still in the balance but hopefully we have done enough for that, and we are a strong unit.” Elsewhere in the Sonar fleet, Craig Wood, Steve Palmer and Liam Cattermole finished their regatta in 12th. The Sonar team’s gold added to the silver already secured by SKUD duo Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell. The Paralympic bronze medallists had an unassailable points margin over the third-placed Italian team, with the host’s 2012 gold medallists and defending World Champions Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch wrapping up overall victory in the two-person event with a day to spare.
In the 2.4mR fleet, Paralympic Champion Helena Lucas sailed a great final race to come close to upsetting the podium positions, missing out on bronze by just two points.

Redevelopment in East Cowes BOSKALIS Westminster have finished the rock armouring on the Cowes Breakwater. The removal of surplus gravel material has been delayed due to the requirement for contractors to obtain a new MMO consent for its removal and disposal. In the meantime the breakwater Exclusion Zone continues to remain in force. The new harbour tidal model, commissioned by CHC from ABPmer, will now be utilised to optimise the next
phases of planned harbour infrastructure, the Shrape extension and new Eastern Channel dredge. Initial sedimentation surveys have been carried out to help give an improved understanding of the Cowes Harbour baseline sedimentation budget. In further news, the developers of the new Victoria Marina waterfront in East Cowes have begun preparations for the start of the project following the recent
completion of the new outer breakwater. The long-planned redevelopment of the former GKN Aerospace site and the waterfront to the north of the Red Funnel terminal is one of the major remaining pieces in the £200m East Cowes Masterplan incorporating part of the Solent Gateways project. The project has been made possible by the completion of the outer breakwater, and will comprise a new marina and
major shoreside development, to be named Victoria Quay in recognition of the area’s historic royal connections. The plans include renovation, conversion and new-build works. This will see the creation of new residential and hospitality properties alongside the regeneration of the Columbine Building and Victoria Barracks, arranged around the new marina and within an extensively landscaped setting. Under the plans for the Victoria Quay development, the Columbine Building – famous for sporting the world’s largest Union Jack – will undergo a phased refurbishment and will house a variety of marine-based operations under the overall tenancy of Camper and Nicholsons Marinas. It will also provide office space for a number of other local and international businesses.

Hundreds of jobs were lost when Fairline Boats went into administration just a few months after being acquired by the private equity firm Wessex Bristol. Wessex Bristol also owns the sports boat brand Fletcher Boats. restructuring firm FrP Advisory were appointed joint administrators to Fairline and laid off around 380 workers. There may be some good news for some of those who have lost their jobs. sunseeker is looking to expand its workforce this year. Phil Popham, CeO, said: “With the introduction of a number of new boat lines in 2016 we are now looking to recruit up to 100 new skilled staff to support future growth. The vacancies we have created include many similar roles to those at Fairline Boats – covering all construction trades.” Fairline, founded in 1963, has two factories, in Oundle and in Corby, northamptonshire, as well as a small testing site in Ipswich. The yacht builder has had a difficult few years that saw it transition through five different CeOs.

Oman welcOmes the america’s cup THE Sultanate of Oman will create a rare slice of sporting history when it becomes the first country in the Middle East to host America’s Cup racing by staging the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Oman in February 2016. The event will take place in Muscat from 27 - 28 February, as the curtain raiser to the 2016 season, which will be spread over six different venues around the world. For many of the America’s Cup sailors, including Sir Ben Ainslie, the waters off the Sultanate of Oman will be familiar territory, since Muscat has been hosting high performance multihull racing every year since 2011.
Near perfect sailing conditions that consistently deliver a 10 - 15 knot breeze combined with a sunny climate and warm waters have made Oman a popular destination for many Olympic Classes that have chosen to stage their World Championships at a time of year when the weather in Europe and North America limits training opportunities. However, there are currently 755 yachts being built, up on last year’s figure of 735. Driving the market is a 17 per cent increase on last year in the number of ‘explorer’ yachts in build (the boats designed to travel to the farthest
corners of the planet), and a strong performance for mid-size yachts, which have seen a nine per cent increase. The biggest superyacht producer in the world remains Italy, home to three of the world’s top builders, followed by The Netherlands, Turkey, Taiwan, the US and the UK in sixth place.

St Kilda yacht race announced IT is a remote beacon of the British Isles; a group of islands shrouded in mystery that have fascinated generations. And, for the first time, an organised yacht race will make the windswept St Kilda island group its focus – helping to highlight the UK’s only dual World Heritage Site, recognised for both its natural and cultural significance, in what will be the 30th anniversary of it receiving the its designation in 1986. On 10 June the gun will sound on the first ever edition of the St Kilda Challenge.
UKSA CONTINUES AT COWES
The fleet will journey over a total of more than 100nm of open sea, famed for its wildness, wildlife and unpredictability with the St Kilda archipelago as its goal. Using the islands as their turning point, the yachts will make a rounding and then return to the finish line in the Sound of Harris. By no means lengthy in terms of open water racing, its relatively short distance belies the significant challenges that could be faced by the vessels and crews. www.calmac.co.uk/stkilda/challenge
NEWS IN BRIEF CLASSY RS AERO
Just 18 months after its initial launch, the RS Aero Class has qualified for ‘World Sailing (ISAF) Class Status’. The official World Sailing Class status brings with it recognition at the highest level of International Sailing regulation of the class structure, rules and constitution. The class will see regional regattas being held across Europe in 2016, kicking off with the Czech Open on Lake Lipno in May. www.rsaerosailing.org

COWES Week Limited have agreed to extend UKSA’s very successful two year term as official event charity for one further year, to include the August 2016 regatta. As part of UKSA’s involvement with the regatta, they will continue to
provide opportunities for all-comers to get afloat and experience the excitement of sailing at this iconic event. In addition, they will be engaging with the public shore-side with a presence at one of the main exhibition sites and working closely with the local business community and event sponsors. Cowes Week will take place from 6 – 13 August 2016. www.aamcowesweek.co.uk
When entries opened for the 2016 Venture Cup, Vector Martini were one of the first teams to sign up for this round Ireland race. With celebrity drivers Bruno Senna and David Gandy they will be one of the favourites to win the 1,000nm event, especially after such a successful 2015 which saw them break four speed records on Coniston Water and retain the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes title. The race will start in Cork on 12 June, follow Ireland’s western and northern coastline before finishing up in Dublin on 19 June.

UK Sailing League launched
RYA British Keelboat Sailing launched the first ever club keelboat fleet racing league in the UK at the Queen Mary Sailing Club. 10 teams took part in the UK Sailing League Trial Event run in partnership by the Royal Thames Yacht Club and the RYA. The UK Sailing League Trial Event is a new keelboat model that has been successively run in Germany over a number of years. The RTYC has bought into the concept and has partnered with the RYA to help launch the new enterprise. Sailing

clubs were invited from around the UK to compete at the trial event at Queen Mary before the idea is rolled out nationally. Nigel King, RYA Keelboat Manager said: “This new format of racing is really exciting for us and one we think will take off. The idea is to increase the numbers of sailors taking part in keelboat racing and help clubs build up a strong base of keelboat sailors. The RYA plans to work with all clubs that are keen to host events, helping them find and train race officials within their region as well as access to boats.”

SAILING HOLIDAYS StARt PlANNING YOUR 2016 HOlIDAYS
Sit back, relax and start planning this year’s sailing holidays.
Dream holidays
Now is a great time to start considering where you will be sailing this year. whether planning several short breaks or the trip of a lifetime there are lots of things to think about. which country? what kind of holiday? when to go? These are all important considerations and even if you are a seasoned traveller it is worth looking at the new holidays for 2016 and the special offers that are available. You might even find somewhere you had never
WHEN TO GO ON HOLIDAY
wHEN you choose to take your holiday will not only impact on the price you pay but also where you choose to go. The best time to visit one area is not necessarily the best time to go to another, and this will be reflected in the price. Another big factor affecting price is the school holidays. If you do not need the best weather then choose the low season, which will also have the benefit of not being so busy. However, families with children will have less choice, having to stick to when school is out. However this does not mean they have to go to the most popular, expensive destinations. A little research will show that there are many excellent places to holiday for all budgets. High season is when prices will be
considered visiting before. Perhaps you would like to sail with a group; in which case it is definitely good to start now so that you can ensure everyone agrees a date and destination. However even when it is just you and your family there are plenty of decisions to make, but that is all part of the fun. when choosing your holiday there are a number of questions to answer: what, when, how and where? Let us begin with the what and when.
at their highest, but is also the busiest time. If this is when you plan to go the earlier you book the more choice you will have. However it is sometimes worth holding on for a last minute deal if you are willing to take a gamble on your destination and travel dates. There is also the option of winter sailing. Forget the cold and layer up and get back on-board your boat. There might be fewer boats on the water in the winter months, but it can be a great time to take a boating holiday. The UK has some stunning locations to sail including Portavadie overlooking Loch Fyne in Scotland and the tranquillity of Lochranza on the Isle of Arran. European sailing is always an option when the winter months set in, and there are some of the most beautiful locations on water.
WHAT KIND OF HOLIDAY?
n LEARN TO SAIL – the chance to combine training with sailing in a beautiful location. Come away from your holiday with an internationally recognised certificate. n BARE BOAT YACHT CHARTER – this is the one for you if you like the freedom to explore in your own time. Choose where to go and when to get there. n CREWED YACHT CHARTER - if you want to relax on your sailing holiday or you do not have the experience to sail your own yacht, choose a crewed yacht with professional skipper and crew onboard. n SKIPPERED HOLIDAYS – take the pressure off by hiring a skipper for all or part of your holiday. Also great if you want to learn to sail. n FLOTILLA – for a more social holiday with a set route and crew support a flotilla is ideal. At the end of the day there are social events such as group BBQs and meals. n MOTORYACHT CHARTER - charter a motoryacht for total freedom to cruise on your own voyage of discovery. The motoryacht is yours for the holiday to explore the chosen cruising area at your own pace. n BEACH CLUB HOLIDAYS - relax or go active at beach clubs. The Beach Club
It is not all about sailing – why not charter a motorboat this year?
holiday is often regarded as the best holiday type for the beginner sailor as all of the beach clubs have tuition facilities in a variety of watersports. Activities include windsurfing, dinghy sailing, mountain biking and kids’ clubs. n SAIL AND STAY – combine a holiday afloat with time ashore. FURTHER CoNSIDERATIoNS Children love sailing holidays as there is always so much going on both at sea and shore from watersports and learning the ropes on board to the trips ashore to explore local areas. Each day will be different but will bring plenty of fun and excitement, especially if there are lots of other children around. However there has been a growth in demand for adult only holidays that attract couples and groups of friends as well as parents who are taking a holiday without their children. In June and July 2016, for example, Sunsail offers two adult only flotilla
routes in Greece from £1,555 for a one-week flotilla charter (sleeps up to four people; price per person from £389). There are many holidays for adults and families, but there are also specialist holidays for solo travellers, teens and more. while you do not need to have any previous experience or sailing qualification to go on a sailing holiday, your choices will be greater if someone in your group holds some certificates or verifiable record of previous sailing. If you are taking a crewed yacht charter or skippered holiday the boat will come with experienced crew and so no experience will be required Requirements vary from place to place but for bareboat charter skippers usually need either a RYA Day Skipper Practical or an International Certificate of Competence or an equivalent national certificate from a recognised body.

HOW TO BOOK THE PERFECT HOLIDAY FOR YOUR FAMILY
YOU have decided on the what and when but you also need to think about the details such as how to get there, insurance and finding the best deals. Some holidays will include the complete package of flights, hotels, boat and transfer. This makes booking your holiday extremely straightforward and is the ideal choice for many. Others prefer to book each individually to get the best price or to have more control over, say, flight times. Once you know what you are looking for it is time to search for the best offers and deals. While booking a long way ahead can bring good savings, it is also possible to find deals throughout the year. Incredibly at Sailing Holidays they have already opened bookings for 2017 holidays. At the time of writing 11 of you eager sailors had booked this far ahead with them. The offer of 2017 holiday at 2015 prices was clearly very tempting! While it is not always possible to know when and where your next holiday will be months and months in advance, it can sometimes be cost effective to book early and take advantage of the early booking discounts.
Just gone are many discounts to book by 31 December – often offering 2016 holidays at 2015 prices - but there will always be more so watch out for them. Nautilus Yachting tell us that many early booking discounts up to 15 per cent off are still valid to the end of January so get your next sailing holiday on the 2016 calendar now. There are other benefits to booking early including, for families, getting family or interconnecting rooms and flights at times to suit you, not to mention booking your seats on the flight. Obviously there will be more choice too as you will be getting in before holidays start getting booked up. Holiday companies, like Seafarer, also offer savings for repeat bookings and so it is always worth asking if you are booking with a company you have used previously. Equally good can be special offers and last minute deals. While they can sometimes offer your dream holiday, generally, if you do not have a specific destination or time to go these can be a great option – which could easily end up being your dream trip. It is useful to note that last minute deals do not necessarily mean that you will be on holiday the week after you book. Quite often you will still be booking a holiday for a few months’ time.

JUST like any other adventure holiday sailing comes with certain risks which is why sailing travel insurance is necessary. Although you will probably enjoy one of the most exciting and luxurious holidays you will ever experience it is also important to be prepared with a suitable sailing travel insurance policy in the event of accidents and injuries incurred on board. You could opt for a Single Trip Travel Insurance policy but if you are going to be away for a long duration or plan to travel several times over the course of the year choose annual multi-trip travel insurance.

POWER NEWS
ALL AT SEA JANUARY 2016
THUNDERING AHEAD
RYA POWERBOAT RACING REVIEW OVER the last six months the RYA has been conducting an in-depth review of its governance of Powerboat Racing in the UK led by an independent consultant. Throughout the process all members of the Powerboat Racing community have had the opportunity to contribute to the review, with all views being considered and evaluated alongside written materials, minutes and reports. “The objective of the review was to provide the best framework for the continued future development of Powerboat Racing in the UK, whilst limiting the RYA’s exposure to unacceptable levels of financial and reputational risk,” said RYA Powerboat Racing Manager, Jeni Jelf. The review examined aspects of liability, risk, safety and training and the RYA itself and makes recommendation for their improvement. As a result of this it has been decided that the RYA will remain the National Governing Body for Powerboat Racing in the UK, but a number of substantial changes relating to subjects such as insurance and offshore race approvals will be made that will impact on officials, competitors, clubs and event organisers. Further changes will be implemented during the 2016 season as a result of the review in relation to the committee governance structure and the training of officials and competitors. www.rya.org.uk/go/powerboatracing
A PAIR of West Wales powerboaters finished fifth in the world after representing Great Britain in Malta at the P750 Thundercat UIM World Championships. Neyland’s Simon Harding, a former jockey, was competing in his second world championships, while former moto-cross rider Kurt Croft from Pembroke was in his first. They handled some tough racing conditions which saw several boats flipping in the air or retiring for other reasons. “Simon, of 51 Racing, said: “The team managed a great result of third in class. We were entered into the class for standard engines, but because of the temperature of 34 degrees and water temperature of 24 degrees

POWERBOATING AWARDS LAUNCHED THERE is to be a new awards programme to recognise the contribution of industry partners to powerboat racing. Engaging the wider marine industry and commercial stakeholders within the sport the new awards will be presented at the annual RYA Powerboat Racing Awards Ceremony, held in February. Powerboat Racing Manager, Jeni Jelf said:
“Our current awards ceremony is largely focused on competitors and no opportunity has previously existed to recognise companies and organisations who contribute to the sport’s success in other ways. This includes the wider marine industry, innovators in the field of safety and technology, host venues, sponsors and the media.” www.rya.org.uk/go/ powerboatracing

we decided to move up a class to professional engines to gain extra power. “The first day of racing was surf discipline. There was not much surf but the team came in 5th in the final after four heats to qualify. “The next discipline was long haul with one race covering 68 miles. It was one of the hardest races we have ever been in with three boats flipping and four retirements, so we were delighted to finish third.. “The last discipline was circuits and the team managed to keep going to finish sixth despite the motor suffering a few problems.” When all the results were added up the team was ranked fifth best in the world.

ALL AT SEA JANUARY 2016
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
PROPELLER PROTECTIOIN
A SAfety ProPoSAl Andy Sims, Managing Director at AJS Technical Services, and Paul Martin, Director at BHG Marine, look at the discussion surrounding the use of propeller guards.
Andy Sims
andy sims: Over the last few years there have been many truths, untruths and even lies surrounding the issue of propeller protection. most, i would argue, being down to a lack of understanding of what is trying to be achieved or the design and manufacturing innovation that has taken place. Prop protection can be in the form of simple Propeller Rings or more complicated Prop deflectors and Prop
Guards. They are available in plastic or steel and be custom or multi fit. Prop guards can alter characteristics of a vessel or have little or no effect; it all depends on the circumstances of use and operation. Factors to take into account when choosing the type of equipment to fit include location, operating speeds, type of craft and propellers being used. Each situation is different and worthy of an open conversation with the suppliers of the products. i would argue that prop protection should be viewed in the first instance as an additional tool helping with the protection in operation of the craft. it can obviously help protect the propeller and gear box from striking a fixed object (saving damage or even the craft being knocked out of service) or to protect an object in the water coming into contact with a moving propeller. in either of the cases, prop protection is helping keep the craft serviceable when in other circumstances it may not have been. The final decision is one that should be made only after you have considered and appraised all of the issues surrounding the safe operation of your craft. Kill cords, safety briefs and correct equipment worn and carried on board all form part of the
process of assessment. do your homework and speak to those people who have used the products. after a lifetime in engineering, one reason i became involved in propeller protection was seeing an outboard running and considering what the Health and safety implications would be if it was turned 180 degrees and sat in a workshop. Because it sits in the water and generally can not be seen, we seem to ignore the thought. my opinion is to view the product as a way of preventing damage - keeping a craft running. any other by-product of fitting is a bonus. Prop protection offers no substitute or excuse for the non-safe operation of craft. it should, however, form part of your full view of craft operation. it is best to first think that if you elect to fit a device, it should be seen as nothing more than a ‘last resort’ in case all other measures have failed. They do, however, offer a preventative measure against what you can not see or account for. it is down to you to make an informed decision, not an ill-informed out-of-date one. Just do not regret doing nothing. www.ajs-t-s.com
Paul Martin
Paul maRTin: it seems odd that all over the world if you buy a fan, it has a guard. all modern machinery is now legislated to have guards and protection. They even put a small plastic tape around planes when you disembark a propped plane, just in case, and it is not even spinning.
generations of performance stainless protection that offer minimal performance loss.
So understanding the above, the question is - why are boat propellers unprotected?
With protection readily available and affordable, is there any legislation or recommendations from recognised organisations?
There is the argument that a propeller spinning in open water presents no danger, and in most cases this is true. However, in some instances, there are serious safety concerns with an unguarded propeller, and incidents have happened, people have been hurt and sadly lives have been lost. Consideration must also be made to sea life such as whales and especially manatees, like those in Florida, which consistently suffer horrific injuries. So, taking the above in consideration, what can be done?
in fact, today there are several options readily available on the market that vastly improve safety such as PropGuard and Prop deflector.
There are none, except for commercial solas craft where it is mandatory. The Rnli Beach Rescue service always use them and the sea Cadets make it a required item for all their safety boats. However, the Rya tested a selection of propeller guards nearly 15 years ago and were initially advising that they were dangerous but only recently, after a culmination of incidents, have taken a more neutral stance, stating that each club or organisation should risk assess their operation.
Historically, propeller guards have always been available but they have been bulky welded metal cages that provided safety but have severe implications on performance, speed and handling. They were also very expensive. lightweight and affordable moulded plastic PropGuards became available 15 years ago, and from this there are now new

The RYA argue that correct training will assist in reducing the risk of prop related incidents. However accidents happen. We are trained to drive our car, but still have to wear a seat belt.
Is there a subject you would like to see featured in the Experts’ Forum? Get in touch. Richard Falk, RYA Training Manager and Chief Examiner, had the following to say: “Prop guards are an emotive subject, and like any piece of safety equipment have the potential to do a great deal of good if used in the right context and their limitations are clearly understood. Unfortunately, as is often the case with safety equipment, some people view prop guards as a ‘cure all’, a panacea that will prevent injury. They are another piece of kit that in certain circumstances may assist in reducing the risk of prop related injury.
A PropGuard in action
It is also odd that most of the accidents resulting in propeller injuries are often recorded as kill cord incidents.
“It is important that boaters make a proper assessment of the activities they will be undertaking before deciding if a prop guard is right for them. For a boat that operates in shallower waters or is used in and around swimming areas or watersports activities a prop guard may well be a sensible addition.
If I fit a propeller guard to my engine, what are the benefits and disadvantages?
Consider the advantages and disadvantages of fitting prop protection
Quite simply you will see a huge increase in safety - you from your propeller and your propeller from anything. On displacement hulls you should also notice an improvement on certain performance factors. The main disadvantage, mainly on
faster planning hulls, will be the drag factor and the resultant loss in speed. However some of the guards are designed to give less safety and improved speed, but these tend to cost more. In certain cases, propeller protection should be compulsory. Anywhere where children are in the water, the safety boat should be as it states,

safe. Incidents happen all the time and there is a web site that passionately records these - www. propellersafety.com. Unfortunately, it will take another incident, where life is lost or maimed, before the necessary powers listen to common sense and recommend propeller protection where it is needed. www.bhg-marine.co.uk
“However, for a boat that requires rapid acceleration, good manoeuvrability or where its operation is predominantly offshore a prop guard makes less sense. The other factor to consider is whether you are trying to protect a) people from injury or b) your prop from damage, as this will determine the type of prop guard you may wish to look at. “Most importantly, if you do choose to use a prop guard you should be very aware that it is not a cure all. It is one of several pieces of equipment that when used properly together should assist in minimizing the risk to you, your passengers and those in the water. The most valuable piece of safety equipment will always be your brain – which will hopefully assist you in making good, sound and sensible decisions about how you operate your boat.” www.rya.org.uk

ALSO ON SHOW…
THE RS Sailing Simulator is a real RS Tera fixed to a stand simulating the life-like motion of a boat. The simulator enables youngsters to get in the boat and experience the feeling and movement required in a controlled (and dry!) environment. There will be an instructor on hand to offer guidance and tips on how to sail the simulator. Do not forget that there is a party night too. The leisure marine industry is renowned for enjoying a good party and Thursday Night is the first Boating Party of the New Year. Live music, fashion shows, celeb chefs, a rocking Guinness Bar and parties just about everywhere are a great warm
welcome to the New Year and a look forward to the forth coming boating season. The show is open for an extra two hours so make sure you take advantage and come on board. Step onto the dockside to see some fabulous historic boats. Climb on board, look around and learn about their interesting histories and restorations from the crew. The Massey Shaw is an old fire boat - look out for its water cannon displays! MT Kent and MT Touchstone are motor tugs that have been lovingly restored. Then there’s SB Melissa, a Thames sailing barge, plus the Spirit of Falmouth, a wooden gaff rigged tall ship.
A world of adventure and innovation awaits visitors to this year’s London Boat Show with many of the biggest names from the marine world displaying their latest boats, products and technologies. PACKED with over 400 exhibitors, there will be world, European and UK debuts, plus products never seen before. As well as the many gadgets, gizmos and bargains there will be the opportunity to learn new skills and get practical advice. Exhibitors will range from world-class boat builders through to fashion, travel operators and watersports companies – ensuring there is something for everyone. New brands to check out for 2016 include Suzuki, Adidas Sailing, Four Winns, Monterey Boats, Seago Yachting, Jimmy Green Marine, Arthur Beale and RNLI. But it is not all about the exhibitors. There are a number of new attractions personifying the adventure, pioneers and innovation encompassed in the show’s theme. This year the show is inviting visitors to discover the best of boating, from the ground-breaking innovations of the 1960s to the sailing champions of tomorrow.
The London Boat Show Theatre
This is where personalities can share their inspiring stories and expert knowledge through interactive talks and panel shows. Topics will range from technology and innovations to engine maintenance and around the world expeditions. It has been billed as a mixture of A Question of Sport, Mock the Week and Mastermind.
60’s Revival
Another new feature is the 60’s Revival, celebrating the innovations of yesteryear, in which visitors will be taken back to the swinging 60’s. This was the era that saw the first man walk on
the moon, The Beatles, the arrival of the Mirror Dinghy and Sir Francis Chichester becoming the first person to sail singlehanded around the world.
Mediterranean Bay
The Mediterranean Bay, surrounded by faux villas and cafes, will put boating skills to the test live at the show. The pool will host water seminars on close quarters boat handling, sail reefing and capsize drills. In addition visitors can try their hand at various
watersports including water-walking and kayaking. Murray Ellis, Managing Director of British Marine Boat Shows, said, “At the heart of Europe’s most pioneering city, we are celebrating the rich heritage of British boating at this iconic event. Visitors will be taken on a journey of discovery, from reliving the great moments of our time to technologies of the future which will revolutionise the way we get out on the water.”
Land Rover BAR
Stand A001
The Land Rover BAR stand will be packed with interactive displays and competitions. In addition to proven favourites such as the interactive power grinder, Henri Lloyd Land Rover BAR merchandise, Spinlock safety gear and Team Origin Events selling advanced tickets for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Portsmouth, the team will be introducing some new features to the stand. Visitors to will be able to trial the next development of the Land Rover BAR’s 3D sailing experience. The innovative adventure starts with each virtual sailor at the helm, controlling their own AC45 and getting a personalised image of them ‘flying’ the foiling catamaran. Plus visitors can discover the stand’s ‘pit wall’ display, which will showcase how the Land Rover BAR Systems and Analysis team review data from the testing boats, just like a Formula 1 race team on the pit lane.

IT IS BILLED AS THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST ROW. WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES?
TELL US ABOUT ROW2RECOVERY.
Row2Recovery supports adaptive Rowing for the British military Wounded, Injured and Sick in partnership with British Rowing and Help for Heroes.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE PART IN THE TALISKER WHISKY ATLANTIC CHALLENGE?
This is no doubt an inspirational project, the guys I have met so far during the selection and preparation process inspire me. It is a huge personal challenge too and about pushing yourself to the limit. Raising money for such an outstanding
Living in a confined space in extremely uncomfortable conditions! It is a great boat but living on it for weeks on end will be a challenge. also the hurt and ache from the row will not be easy. The team will row more than 3,000nm across the world’s second largest ocean, the atlantic. Rowers will head west from San Sebastian in La Gomera to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbour, antigua. Once we leave we will be on our own on the vast ocean and at the mercy of the elements, until the race comes into its final stretch.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HAVE THE SUPPORT OF PEOPLE LIKE PRINCE HARRY?
Prince William and Prince Harry are icons in our modern day lives. They understand the military machine and welfare of young men and women serving our country. The support from Endeavour Fund has been vital to us. Knowing that they have supported it financially and holistically and given us their seal of approval is a fantastic warm feeling.
WHAT IS COMING UP IN 2015 FOR ROW2RECOVERY?
Row2Rcovery continue to support national military adaptive rowing through Help for Heroes and British Rowing. James Kayll and Cayle Royce are talking about rowing the Pacific Ocean from the west coast of USa, via Hawaii and Samoa, to australia.

Sonar So Good

This month Sonar sailor Hannah Stodel tells of her delight at a hard-fought victory with teammates John Robertson and Steve Thomas at the Para World Sailing Championships.
I am so excited to finally be able to say we are Para World Champions for the third time. after a tough week on Port Phillip Bay in melbourne, John, Steve and I came away with World Championship gold once again after a nine-year wait to capture the hat-trick. We went into the final day of racing with the yellow leaders’ dots on our sails and were able to close out the victory by a single point over a strong home australian team. We did have a slightly nervous wait to have our title confirmed, however, as the aussies sought redress for an incident with the French earlier in the week, which, even though we were not involved, might have affected the overall scores. They ultimately proved unsuccessful, which worked out well for us.
MIXED RESULTS 2015 was a rollercoaster for us as a team from start to finish. We had some average performances and were just outside the medals so many times. To anyone looking in from the outside, it might have seemed like the team had lost its edge recently. It had been a pretty frustrating time – as a team we had been used to featuring regularly on the podium at most major regattas. But with the Sonar fleet becoming ever more competitive, you have to keep moving forward and pushing development projects quite hard. at times that has meant results have not been what they could have been as that process takes shape. all of the development had been geared towards the World Championships in melbourne, so we are

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?
We all hope that we will be great friends after the row. We know it will be struggle at times but the most important thing is that we will be friends for life after sharing this incredible experience. disastrous results we got on one bad day, but what we do have that some other teams lack, is complete support for each other. There is no blame here. What is done is done, you learn and you move on. We fight for every place on the race course and we come back harder the next day, and that is exactly what we did in melbourne. BETTER THAN EVER There has been a pretty big gap between our World Championship wins: 2005, 2006 and 2015. I think this one is by far the most rewarding. Back then we were good, but now we are better. One point might not be a lot, but that is what won us the championship, and in doing so I think we proved we can sail in all conditions. We could take hits and we could keep going, never giving up. We have got plenty to work on in 2016, but we are fighting and we can go towards the Games with our heads held high. Our aspirations of course remain the same as ever - Gold at Rio 2016.

EXPERTS’ FORUM
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
CHARTERING A BOAT
FUN IN THE SUN Adi Togs, co-founder of PlainSailing.com, shares his top tips for making your charter holiday a breeze. NOW is the perfect time to book a holiday and many sailors choose to charter a yacht. There are thousands of stunning locations to explore – the beautiful UK coastline, Mediterranean bays or even more exotic waters make perfect holiday destinations. Like any holiday, a certain amount of research is essential to making sure you have a fantastic time. To help you select the right yacht you will need to think about how many guests there will be, whether the crew can share cabins and if there are any specific facilities or requirements the group needs. The average yacht will fit in four to eight
people quite comfortably and you can book a smaller or bigger berth if required. When selecting your yacht and holiday location, think about what kind of experience you want to have and the sailing skills and capabilities of the crew. As a group, you might have visions of cruising between beautiful ports with amenities and restaurants, exploring secluded anchorages and wildlife spotting or putting your team’s sailing skills to the test. Whatever your holiday aspirations, there is definitely a location and yacht to suit you. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED? If you are an RYA (or international equivalent) qualified skipper, you can choose to charter a yacht ‘bareboat’ – where you just take the boat. You will need to have completed and passed the RYA Day Skipper course, or higher, or an international equivalent. This will usually

cover you to sail a charter boat during daylight hours but not during the night. Some companies may differ, so check the small print of their T&Cs when making your booking. The charter company will need to see a copy of your skipper qualification, as well as a passport or driving license to verify your identity. Some charter companies enable you to upload your identity
documents ahead of your booking to make the check-in process quicker and easier. Make sure you review the terms and conditions of any charter company you use and have any additional insurance required in place. The charter company may also need to take your credit card details or request a security deposit, which will be returned in full when the boat is given back undamaged. Take your original documents on holiday with you as it is likely the charter company will want to see them before you set sail. YOUR OWN SKIPPER If you are not qualified or want to make your holiday more relaxing, then you will need to hire a skippered charter. The skipper is provided to sail and be responsible for the yacht. It is a great

opportunity to learn from a professional sailor as well as benefit from their knowledge from the securest bays for anchoring to the best swimming spots. Charter companies sometimes offer the choice to add extra luxuries to your booking from bedding and clothing, to food and drink, and are a great source of advice and guidance. When you arrive at your yacht take time to check the electronics, navigation and safety equipment. Chartering a yacht is always a new and exciting experience – whether for a relaxing holiday or to explore new destinations on-board a beautiful yacht. If you think about these points before you book, you will be setting sail in no time. RYA FOCUS
The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
BY EMMA SLATER
Leading the way The RYA Volunteer Awards recognise the work of more than 50 volunteers across all aspects of boating, and here we put the spotlight on four of the younger winners.
REFLECTING the wide appeal of boating, the Awards cover four categories: the RYA Awards, RYA Community Awards, Francis Elkin Award and the RYA Family Award. One of those, the RYA Community Awards, consists of Lifetime Commitment, Outstanding Contribution and Youth Awards and is awarded for contribution to grassroots sailing at club level. This year four young sailors were commended for their voluntary work. William Baldock, of Girton Sailing Club, Tom Rusbridge from the West Sussex Schools & Youth Sailing Association, Belfast Lough Sailability’s Cameron Date and Abby West, who is an Instructor and Cadet Representative at Hill Head Sailing Club, were all awarded the Youth Award. Duncan Truswell, RYA Sport Development Manager, said: “The RYA Volunteer Awards are our opportunity to say thank you on behalf of clubs and associations that affiliate to the RYA to their volunteers, the people that really make a difference to help people get afloat. “Each of these young sailors have set a great example and contributed significantly at their respective clubs and organisations, and we are delighted to be able to honour them in this way.” We caught up with each award winner, who received their award from the Princess Royal, to find out more about their contributions and what inspires them to continue volunteering and contributing to sailing in the UK.
WILLIAM BALDOCK, GIRTON SAILING CLUB
Having learnt to sail at Girton Sailing Club in Nottinghamshire, William quickly became an Instructor and more recently a Senior Instructor, offering the club tremendous support in training new members. William has also been heavily involved in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, having reached the final several times as a competitor. Upon turning 17, and becoming too old to compete, William turned his
efforts towards helping plan and organise local heats for the event. This year his commitment paid off as for the first time Girton Sailing Club triumphed at national level in the competition. Max Mawer won the 13 - 16 age category and gained a Highfield 460 RIB with a Honda BF50 engine for his club. Beyond his work with the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, William has proved to be a vital member of the club committee, undertaking numerous roles. These include the duties of Boat Park Manager and Membership Secretary, whilst he has also taken charge of the website and publicity. In addition he is always willing to help out with other maintenance tasks as they arise including installing and maintaining the club burglar alarm and wi-fi systems. William said: “I feel it is important that young people volunteer for events such as
the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship because we have first-hand experience of competing in the event and can help out the current competitors. “It was a surprise to find out I had been nominated for an award. You are not in it for the recognition, but it is really nice to see that your efforts are appreciated, and it was a great day.”
CAMERON DATE, BELFAST LOUGH SAILABILITY
Having initially been involved with Carrickfergus Sailing Club since the age of nine, Cameron has tirelessly devoted his time to Belfast Lough Sailability since 2014. In this time, he has quickly become a trusted and invaluable member, arriving early and full of enthusiasm as he helps to rig and prepare the boats needed for each session. Cameron is confident sailing the Hansa 303 with people who have a range of disabilities, and in 2014 was selected to represent BLS at the prestigious President’s Cup, held at Kinsale Yacht Club. Cameron selflessly dedicates much of his time to BLS, all whilst studying for his GCSEs and working towards his Duke of Edinburgh Award. Cameron said: “I have been with Belfast Lough Sailability for two years now, and I really enjoy taking people with disabilities out sailing to give them more experience and help make them more active. “For me, volunteering is a good way of getting experience and meeting a huge range of people from all sorts of backgrounds. I enjoy getting new people involved in the sport, and I hope to continue doing this for as long as possible.”
TOM RUSBRIDGE, WEST SUSSEX SCHOOLS & YOUTH SAILING ASSOCIATION
For the past four years Tom has been at the forefront of developing racing for local young sailors through West Sussex Schools & Youth Sailing Association. Tom has been crucial in creating more opportunities for youngsters to represent their clubs and compete at a wide range of
events across the local area, introducing a Topper Traveller series within West Sussex to encourage first timers to get involved. Tom has also served as Race Officer for the WSSYSA’s annual regatta, which regularly attracts around 100 boats from across the region, successfully coordinating a highly successful event. Of his award, Tom said: “There are so many people who deserve a Volunteer Award, so it is great to represent them. It is extremely important that people continue to volunteer, because nothing could work in sailing without volunteers. WSSYSA runs 15 - 20 events a year, with each one calling on at least a dozen volunteers. “When you think how that expands year on year, event on event with an ever expanding program and more young people taking part, without all those volunteers, it just would not be possible for young people to participate in the sport. “
ABBY WEST, HILL HEAD SAILING CLUB
Abby joined Hill Head Sailing Club in 2008, and within a year she was helping to teach and encourage other novice sailors, both junior and adults, after qualifying as a Dinghy Instructor. As Cadet Representative Abby has helped the club develop a strong and vibrant cadet sailing group, hosting a number of sailing events throughout the year and encouraging cadet sailing participation. Abby believes that the work of volunteers is vital to ensuring that more people are offered the opportunity to take up sailing. “I was nominated for the work I do on the courses and as a Cadet Representative, and I think it is really important that people continue to volunteer their time and efforts to sailing clubs and organisations. “It is nice to be recognised for all the work you put in, and I would encourage other young people to volunteer because it is really fun, you get loads out of it, you meet loads of really good people and it is a great thing to put on your CV for the future.” To find out more about the RYA Volunteer Awards, visit www.rya.org.uk/go/ RYAVolunteerAwards. Lizzy Foreman
Lizzy, 24, has been sailing since she was three and hopes to one day compete in the Vendée Globe. In 2015 she completed the Mini Transat, crossing the Atlantic solo.
TAKING ON THE MINI TRANSAT
COmplETING THE mINI TRANsAT Lizzy Foreman successfully completed the Mini Transat, crossing the Atlantic solo. Here Lizzy gives an insight into the race and her 2016 plans.
Racing across the atlantic was another game entirely compared to a short three day coastal race. i was trusting the boat with my life; one mistake and i could fall overboard, break the mast or damage the electronics. i had spent an entire month refitting the boat especially for the race with new rudders, electronics, ropes – putting on as much new equipment as possible. Having ripped all three of my spinnakers early on in the crossing, i ended up sailing the majority of the race under gennaker, despite numerous repairs. consequently i was at sea for 18 days, but i loved every moment. THE ROUTINE Being at sea for that amount of time, i ended up with quite a regular routine onboard, living in UTc time, which meant i ate meals regularly, spoke on the VHF at 0600 and 1800 every day to relay my position to any boats close by
and took the weather forecast at 1200 every day via the SSB radio. i started to learn the pattern of the wind shifts, so i would spend the mornings on starboard tack, gybing onto port when the wind became more easterly and gybing back to starboard in the evening. TAKING ON THE WEATHER The most stressful times were always when the squalls came, like a stampede of wild animals. The rain would fall, softly at first, then hammering down and the boat could be over on its side in moments, leaving me clinging for dear life to the guard rails. i quickly learnt to drop and lash down sails just in time. The most exciting moments of the race were always when a competitor burst onto my aiS screen or the radio would crackle with some inaudible French. Just knowing there was actually
You can read more about Lizzy’s Mini Transat experience on www.lizzyracing. com and also watch some videos from the race.
TOp TIps
Thinking about crossing the Atlantic? Here are five tips: 1. Know your boat - inside and out. Take plenty of spares 2. Know yourself - physical and mental limits, strengths and weaknesses 3. study the weather patterns before you go, try to understand the situation at sea 4. Keep a regular log book - not only useful for your navigation, but also your sanity 5. Take a few treats - music and a book were my lifesavers on this crossing (the same 48 hour playlist on repeat!)

somebody else out there would be enough to remind you that you are in a race, let alone sailing solo across the atlantic. Respite from the sun and wind was difficult to find. i suffered heat stroke, ‘nappy rash’ and quickly got fed up with salt encrusted clothes. When your only comforts are finding a dry loo roll or a second stash of tea bags, life takes on a much simpler quality. i absolutely love Mini sailing and truly believe it the best place to learn about offshore sailing. i am determined to be back in august this year for the Les Sables – azores – Les Sables race and the 2017 Transat with a faster and more technical boat and after that i would love to race the 2018 Route du Rhum.

MARINA CHAT
WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND EUROPE’S MARINAS
SUNSHINE AND SAILING
Ben and Georgina Bovill decided to head to warmer waters and, six years later, are still enjoying their European adventure.
WE sail a 38’ Jeanneau Blue Moon which we have owned for 10 years. Having sailed in UK, French and Channel Islands waters for some 25 years the British weather finally persuaded us to move the boat to warmer climes. In 2010 we arrived in Andalucia where we spent four years, followed by another year exploring the Balearics. We then
decided to move to Italy and discovered Marina di Stabia in the Bay of Naples where Blue Moon is now berthed. Before we took her abroad the boat and her predecessors were moored at Mercury Yacht Harbour near Southampton. Upon discovering Marina di Stabia we knew that we would get the same MDL customer service that we had enjoyed for so many years. Also, unlike most marinas in the Mediterranean, it has UK-style finger berths. Marina di Stabia is great; it is bathed in sunshine for much of the year and is in easy reach of famous and beautiful places like Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi and Pompeii. We often visit Sorrento - a charming town offering lots of amazing restaurants. With a hire car we can make excursions to Naples (fascinating!) Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum to absorb a bit

of culture. To the north of the marina lie the stunning islands of Procida and Ischia still only a short sail away. And of course we can make longer expeditions to Sicily in the south and up the coast to Rome and across to the amazing Sardinia and Corsica. The marina itself is perfect for our needs. With views of Mount Vesuvius it has a Yacht Club where the marina team hold social events, a restaurant managed by a Michelin star chef, a gym and a 26m swimming pool. The pool is great for a dip on a hot
day, especially as we are often treated to complimentary drinks at the poolside. We have also attended events organised by the Marina di Stabia team from classical music concerts to barbecues for the berth holders. We can also borrow bikes from the marina which help us to explore the local culture (mind the traffic!). Give us a wave if you see us out and about on Blue Moon! Have you sailed in the Med? g island of in n a e m , o c s Tre the secondis , s e e r t r e eld e Isles of h t f o d n la is biggest wall. Tresco is a subtropical gem with a little bit of everything – from dramatic rocky outcrops, Scilly in Corn bronze age burial sites and romantic castle ruins to secluded sandy beaches and, of course, the world famous Tresco Abbey Garden.
THE Scillies are on many sailors’ bucket list, but if you can not manage the weather window to get there by boat, do not put it off, simply take the Skybus from Newquay or Lands End or the Scillonian from Penzance* and enjoy these unique islands. Food choices are made simple on Tresco, the island I have longed to visit for many years, and I rather like that. Blessed with fine weather from the minute I stepped off the plane at St Mary’s I was soon being transferred to one of the jet boats that whizz around the islands using a variety of harbours and slipways depending upon the tide. The fun begins – well it did as soon as I folded myself into the 18 seater and stuck my nose to the window, spotting St Ives bay and Sennen beach. The tractor on the quay has to reverse back up the jetty and before I know it I have been hijacked by Rachel Young from Tresco Estate, who trundles me off in her golf buggy and points out the layout of the island as we head to the New Inn. In no time bags are dumped and bike sorted as I am keen to be off whilst the sun is out and those white sands beckon.
AT THE RUIN
I can get up and over the island in the shake of a Ruby Red’s tail and I am enjoying my first coffee on the terrace at the Ruin Beach Café by 11.00. Partridges
come up to the table and the sparrows are as friendly as the Cornish gulls are hungry and look as relaxed as birds with few predators can be. The Ruin has a wood fired pizza oven already crackling away behind me. There is a good choice of fast food for hikers and a more interesting menu in the evening using local produce and the afore mentioned Ruby Red beef cattle that graze the island.
ABBEY GARDENS
The sun is still out so I follow signs to the Abbey Gardens, rumbling along the tracks with brilliant blue glimpses of sea and sky. Fruit and veg stalls are piled high outside garden gates, joy! So here I am with two red squirrels and one golden pheasant positively posing for my camera. They are glorious. Hidden shady paths, then open vistas and succulents galore, created by Augustus Smith who built the Abbey back in 1834 and then set about creating one of the finest sub-tropical gardens in the Northern Hemisphere. He changed the skyline forever and as you arrive by sea, whatever your choice of vessel, Tresco stands out from the other islands with its towering collection of unusual trees and shrubs. There are still many flowers in blossom and the bees are

happy – it is positively balmy here. Now let us talk about the weather. I was here in the second week of October and had really hoped for some sunshine. I was lucky and struck gold. A timeshare fan at the Flying Boat club, who always books these first couple of weeks in October, said he has enjoyed great weather for the past three years.

Jumping back on the bike I take a different track back towards the New Inn as I have a date with Tresco’s recently retired Harbour Master, Henry Birch. He has seen a relatively quiet summer as the strong winds have not helped sailors reach their destination on their limited holiday breaks. He tells me that his French visitors love the islands and drop by en route to Ireland. Henry is looking forward to enjoying his retirement with family and friends on Tresco. By the way, if you want to follow in Henry’s steps this is a dream job for someone out there. For more details go to www.tresco. co.uk/jobs - Harbour Master / Bosun I gather a picnic from the bulging Tresco Stores and head to the beach, ducking out of the wind to enjoy the warm October sunshine. I admire a lovely piece of rock studded with ironware and barnacles and the incredibly clear water washing the pale sands.
later – but the views over to St Martins are beguiling any time of day. The seafood is morning fresh here, so it would be rude not to try the Fritto Misto, which comes with home made garlic mayo and includes whitebait, prawns, squid and mussels, along with some incredibly succulent hunks of hake. Perfection when this fresh. And call me a heathen but it was very good with my Tarquin’s G&T. Cornish gin in a distinctive, if un-gin-like, bottle and offered with orange rather than lemon. Very good. Having admired Tresco’s own beef heard today I could not resist the slow cooked Ruby Red pappardelle with porcini, offset by the clean crunch of grated celeriac and parmesan on top. The house Sangiovese was perfect with this and cut through the richness. But the art was in the tart. James Norcott is head chef and his pastry skills are superb. I chose the lemon curd tartlet with berry compote and ginger ice cream. Quite perfect. Crisp pastry, brûlée top covering smooth, nicely runny filling with intense flavour, softened by the berries and ice cream – if you do not have the lemon bug as I do, this helps calm the tongue. Best bites here: the pizzas, scallops and indeed any of the specials cooked in the wood oven, confit of duck and the Ruby Red sirloin steaks. And for lunch? The sharing platter of meats and cheeses. Next month we continue the story and pop over to Bryher.
HEADING FOR DINNER
Back at the New Inn we borrow lights for the bikes and head over the hill to the Ruin Café for dinner. We head off early so that we can enjoy the views. Exploring by bike means you can earmark the best cottages and mark them down on the lovely hand drawn map to remember which ones to book next spring. The Ruin is wonderfully cosy, with everyone enjoying that sea view. This is the sunrise side of Tresco – more

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS
WEYMOUTH MARINA
This modern, purpose built marina is positioned in the centre of this lively, Georgian seaside town, with bucket loads of things to do for all the family.
Commercial Road, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 8NA Tel: 01305 767576 Fax: 01305 767575 berths@weymouthmarina.co.uk www.weymouthmarina.co.uk
SITUATED in the sheltered harbour, beyond the lifting bridge, berth holders and visitors can enjoy a calm night’s sleep with instant access to the town’s shops, restaurants, bars, wonderful walks and, of course, the sheltered, sandy beach. With its own private car park, modern washrooms and launderette on site, Weymouth Marina is a popular destination for visitors. Whether looking for a convenient stop off before rounding Portland Bill and heading west or a permanent base from which to explore the wild beauty of the Jurassic Coast you will always find a warm welcome at Weymouth Marina. Location first and foremost is the main attraction. The marina welcomes families and sociable sailors who like the choice
of activities in the area. From live bands to jet skiing – there is so much to do in Weymouth itself coupled with a top rated, safe, sandy beach and the joys of an unspoilt coastline to explore. Efficient road and rail networks add to the mix, with the mainline station to Waterloo just a short walk away. It is the ideal location for the sailor who likes a little bit of everything. Visitors also come here for the warm welcome and the carnival atmosphere that is present in Weymouth’s bunting adorned side-streets. Weymouth BID ensures a steady stream of events throughout the year to entertain all ages; their winter calendar has been most successful with an ice rink, events stage and Christmas market.
FACILITIES
Dean & Reddyhoff started building the marina in 1996 and finished in 2000. Since that time a new ground floor wet room for families and disabled berth holders have been added. ■ There are excellent 24 hour CCTV cover with electronic coded gates ensuring a high level of security. ■ There is good free WiFi across the marina for berth holders and a pc in the office. ■ There is bike hire on site. Contact them at hire@weymouthbikehire.co.uk or on 07973 751393 ■ They offer the same services to visitors and have 25 allocated berths for them. ■ There are a couple of local chandleries, W L Bussells and Kingfisher Marine, and for bigger jobs you have Mechanical Services at Osprey Quay on Portland.
BERTHING & STORAGE
All berths have fresh water and electricity on the pontoons. Weymouth is a lively sailing centre with an active fishing fleet, so there is a good range of marine services available, though not on-site. There are 300 fully serviced berths, including 25 dedicated visitors’ berths and they can accommodate up to say 20m LOA and 2m draft. Though not actively publicised there are a few live aboards at Weymouth, adding to the security of the site.

ACCESS
WEYMOUTH Marina is set at the far end of the old harbour, beyond the lifting bridge. Please call the marina on VHF Channel 80 pre-arrival or call 01305 767576 The lifting bridge is the main obstacle to overcome and it is best to listen on Channel 12 for any announcements 15 minutes before you plan to enter the harbour. There is a waiting pontoon just before the bridge on the port side. Please call the marina on VHF Channel 80 pre-arrival or call 01305 767576 Good road and rail networks bring visitors to the marina via British Rail (2 hrs 50 mins from Waterloo) or the A35 from the east and west. At Dorchester you follow signs for Weymouth on the A354 and will see the marina on your left, just after the RSPB Bird Reserve. Turn left at the crossroads, cross the bridge and turn right at the lights into Commercial Road and you will find the marina entrance some
600m down on your right, just past the big green D&R buoy.
CRUISING
DEPENDING upon the time of year, weather and if you are sail or power, the cruising choices are wide. Head out east to Lulworth Cove for a picnic lunch or row ashore to enjoy the pub, take the kids for a spin round the bay on that inflatable banana or if short
on time head to Portland Marina and try out the new pub or café for lunch or tea. For a weekend cruise head either to Poole Harbour or Lyme Regis – and in good weather perhaps as far as Dartmouth. For a longer distance cruise there are many choices including Dartmouth, the Channel Isles or the Solent.
“VISITORS COME HERE FOR BOTH THE LOCATION AND THE WARM WELCOME AND THE CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE THAT IS PRESENT IN WEYMOUTH’S BUNTING ADORNED SIDE-STREETS ALL YEAR ROUND“
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
“Some people tend to worry about the bridge cutting down on your access time, but we knew that this was not a major issue due to the excellent waiting pontoons and regular bridge
openings. The marina is incredibly sheltered. There is very little tide and no swell or anything up here. In addition to which, you are relatively sheltered from the wind and so close to the town centre which is really great.” John and Freda Hasker
FURTHER INFORMATION
LOCAL EATERIES
WITH an active fishing fleet it would be rude not to try the Fish & Chips – but which one? There are two camps here: Marlborough on the sea front (famous for introducing the mackerel bap and earning huge support from Hugh FW in the process) or Fish n Fritz, a lovely clean, tiled restaurant a couple of streets back, that offers ‘Suspended Coffee’. No 4 is a good choice for that special night out and for in between you have The Stable, right on the quay, and the George next door shares the same
fabulous views over the commercial fishing boats. A short step along Commercial Road and you will find Dorset Burger Company. Following their growing success they have relocated to bigger premises near the station opposite the Dorset Real Pie & Ale Shop, which is also worth a visit. Other favourites include the Red Lion with great pub food, well kept beer and live music on Sundays and SALT is always worth a visit. For supermarkets there are four within a few minutes of the marina: Londis, Tesco Metro, M&S and ASDA.
THINGS TO DO
As the marina is based right in the middle of Weymouth nothing is too far away. The area is steeped in nautical history including WWII landing craft setting sail from Weymouth to the dreadful day HMS Illustrious’ liberty boat capsized in the bay whilst taking the crew back to the ship after a night on the town. Find out more about Nothe Fort, which housed the 26 Company of the Royal Engineers whilst building the sea defences from 1860 – 1872 to protect Portland Harbour, which was becoming an increasingly important Royal Navy base.

Life-saving defibrillator installed at Swanwick Marina
Swanwick Marina is the first across Premier Marinas portfolio of eight marinas to install this life-saving equipment. The new defibrillator is situated by the Marina Reception, adjacent to the laundry facilities. The defibrillator, which can help resuscitate people who have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, is designed so even amateur first aiders can administer treatment with minimal instruction; emitting a high energy electric shock which restores the heart’s natural rhythm. “This is a great addition to the lifesaving equipment that we have on site which is registered with the NHS/ local Ambulance Service and available for anyone to use in an emergency”
said Andy Osman, CMM. To give people the confidence to act quickly and appropriately in an emergency, these portable and fully automatic defibrillators will be installed across all eight of Premier’s marinas in the coming months.

East Cowes Marina starts Phase Three of its dredging programme in early January, creating deep water berths for over 40 boats. The license to carry out dredging work allows Dean & Reddyhoff to remove 18,700 tonnes of silt on a yearly basis up to a total of 56,100 tonnes. Marina Manager, Mike Townshend explains ‘We will dredge something
between 13,000 m3 and 20,000 m3 depending on time and permissions, and dispose of most of it at the Nab Tower spoil ground, with a small percentage going to Hurst Narrows spoil ground during bad weather, and we hope to complete by Easter, ready for the season’. The work is being carried out by Poole based Jenkins Marine.

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
SIGNALLING A CHANGE
It is important for boaters to keep up-to-date with the latest pleasure boat legislation. Here we look at a recent change in which British pleasure craft over 45ft have been freed from having to carry some of the safety equipment formerly specified under the Merchant Shipping Act.
THE new guidance is contained in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Marine Guidance Notice (MGN) 538, which provides an overview of the Merchant Shipping legislation that applies to pleasure vessels. The MGN includes general exemptions that provide ‘equivalent standards’ for carrying life-saving and firefighting equipment on Category XII craft (pleasure craft over 13.7m, 45ft). The exemptions recognise that Merchant Shipping requirements were difficult to comply with and sometimes in conflict with the EU’s Recreational Craft Directive and some inland waters regulations. The new equivalent standards have been drawn up after lengthy consultations between the MCA and the RYA. These take account of the type of equipment that is readily available and commonly used by private boat owners. The changes have most impact on inland waters craft which used to be required to carry similar equipment to sea-going boats. The old rules did not differentiate well between ‘categorised water’ (inland, sheltered tidal, large lakes and so on) and ‘sea’.
ARE YOU EQUIPPED?
Originally the equivalent standards applied equally to a narrowboat on Category A waters, such as a canal, as much as to sea-going boats. The unintentional consequence of this fact was that narrowboats over 45ft in length were required to carry lifejackets for each of the crew members, a maritime radio and also handheld flares.
The safety equipment legislation has changed for many boaters
The RYA has successfully argued that: ■ Private boats on Category A and B waters should not be required to carry lifejackets for all on board, a maritime radio or handheld flares. ■ Buoyancy aids and lifejackets are acceptable for Class XII vessels used on both Category C and D waters, such as tidal rivers, estuaries and large, deep lakes, and vessels remaining within three miles of the coast. ■ Emergency lifejacket lights are not required if the vessel’s intended operation is in daylight hours or in good visibility. ■ A lifebuoy may be replaced with an 18m rescue line and quoit in Category A or B waters.
Do you know which flares, if any, you should carry on your boat?
■ A ship on voyages solely on Category A or B waters will be considered to comply with the minimum firefighting equivalent standards if it is issued with a valid Boat Safety Scheme certificate.
DISTRESS ALERTING
The RYA has long argued that recreational craft should not have to carry pyrotechnics for distress signalling, as there is an abundance of modern, effective equipment such as EPIRB, PLB and VHF DSC for distress alerting and AIS, EVDS and SART for final mile location. Affordable distress beacons are now readily available for recreational boaters, and it is worth noting that, on average, about five people are rescued every day with the assistance of Cospas-Sarsat alert and location data. In addition, DSC radio sets allow every other radio in range to be called at the same time if you are in trouble. Modern communications technology has enabled the MCA to restructure the management and coordination of search and rescue. It seems logical to use modern distress-signalling techniques to communicate with search-and-rescue operation centres directly rather than relying on a third party to see your flare
and then report it. In recognition of the RYA’s case, the M CA has agreed to omit the requirement for Class XII vessels to carry parachute rocket flares, which are arguably the most dangerous. For Category C waters and above, vessels should carry a maritime radio (ideally DSC enabled), four red handheld flares, two orange smoke signals and a third means of distress signalling, preferably either an EPIRB or PLB. This represents a giant leap in the right direction. The RYA is keen to build on its position on the carriage of flares in order to end compulsory carriage for UK craft up to 24m (78ft 9in) hull length. As the representative voice of boating, the RYA seeks to influence all national legislation that may impact on any aspect of recreational boating or navigational safety. Why not join today and support the RYA in protecting your boating rights and freedoms? Take advantage of free advice and support on all aspects of your boating, as well as enjoying a range of personal member offers. Spanish treasures Although not as popular as it once was, sherry remains a pleasant and comforting tipple at any time of year.
ONE of the treasures of the wine world since before the 16th century, sherry is full of flavour, makes an excellent apéritif and is ubiquitous in Andalucian tapas bars where it is often offered on draught. Sales in the UK peaked in the 1970s. Since then they have steadily declined, due largely to a loss in popularity of the sweet and cream varieties. Dryer sherries, though, are still around in plenty.
SHERRY GOLDEN TRIANGLE
Sherry begins as a wine made from white grapes grown and pressed in the defined Sherry Golden Triangle region of southern Spain, the ‘sherry towns’ of Jerez, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The Triangle is renowned for its very chalky soil and only three grape varieties are authorised for sherry production: Palomino, the dominant grape in the region, Muscat of Alexandria (also known as Moscatel) and Pedro Ximénez, mainly used for flavouring.
The resulting base wine is crisp but neutral in character and has to be fortified with neutral distilled wine spirit or Spanish brandy to raise the alcoholic abv (alcohol by volume) to between 13 and 20 per cent. Sherry is not a vintage-dated wine. It takes the Solero maturation and blending method in large vats to turn it into sherry, which is also how a producer maintains a consistent blend.
CASK TO VAT
But first the base wine is held in mainly American oak casks for several months. These are only filled to about 85 per cent and into this gap a natural yeast coating known as ‘flor’ spontaneously forms from the atmosphere at the winery. The wine is then fortified and transferred to vats for the Solero part of the process. This is a permanent sequence of maturation vats and bottling is done by taking about one third out of the last vat in the sequence, the oldest sherrywine, and replenishing it from the adjacent one before it, which in turn is replenished from its neighbour and so on until newly made sherrywine is put into the first barrel in the line. The more vats in the chain and the older the system, the more subtle the wine.

Hence the codes on bottle labels. Those marked VOS (very old sherries) are at least 20 years old, VORS (very old rare sherries) at least 30 years old and Añadas vintage dated sherries are from a single year. Mainstream prices are from £7 to £10 a bottle but some older ones, 20 years or so, can be £20 plus. These are examples of each type I found locally: ■ Fino: ‘Tio Pepe’ by Gonzales Byass, 15 per cent, £10 for 75cl ■ Manzilla: ‘La Gitana’ by Bodegas Hidalgo, 15 per cent, £8.50, 75cl ■ Fino Palomino: ‘Elegante’ 15 per cent, £6.50, 75cl. ■ Amontillado Medium Dry: Waitrose own brand, 18.5 per cent, £6.99, 75cl ■ Pedro Ximénez: Harvey’s VORS 30 year-old, 16 per cent, £21.99 per 50cl bottle ■ Cream: Rich Sweet by Waitrose 19.5 per cent, £6.99, 75cl
TASTE CHECK ■ Fino: crisp, delicate, yeasty, nutty and very versatile, usually about 15 per cent. Drink chilled or with an ice cube. ■ Manzanilla: fino-style from the coastal town of Sanluca, fresh with a distinctive salty tang. ■ Amontillado: aged fino, amber colour, nutty, fortified to about 17.5 per cent. ■ Oloroso: complex brown coloured matured in a single barrel (not Solero) for many years, rich and nutty. ■ Pedro Ximénez: made from air-dried grapes, with fermentation stopped early by the addition of spirit. Viscous and sweet, it tastes like liquid Christmas cake. ■ Cream: sweetened with Moscatel or Pedro Ximénez.
