FINaL FaReweLL FOR HMs ‘LUsTY’ HMS Illustrious is launched

In December HMS Illustrious, Britain’s last working aircraft carrier, began her final journey to Turkey after being decommissioned in 2014 and sold for scrap. HMS Illustrious was the second of three Invincible class aircraft carriers – along with HMS Invincible and HMS Ark Royal - and was laid down in October 1976. She is the fifth warship to bear the name and was affectionately known to her crew as Lusty. In 1982 the conflict in the Falklands necessitated that Illustrious be completed and rushed south to join her sister ship HMS Invincible and the veteran carrier HMS Hermes. Therefore her completion was brought forward by three months at Swan Hunter Shipyard in Newcastle. After the Falklands War she performed various duties including participating in exercises all around the world. On 3 April1986 the aircraft carrier was setting off on a nine month world deployment when she suffered a catastrophic gearbox failure which caused a major fire. It was fought by her crew for more than four hours and at one point abandoning ship was considered. However her crew managed to get the

fire under control and the following day she entered Portsmouth Harbour under her own steam and entered dry dock for repairs, which took three months to complete. She subsequently had a six-month deployment, the highlight of which was when she arrived in Sydney Harbour on the 4 October 1986 for the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Royal Australian Navy. Later, during her long service, she took part in Operation Southern Watch in Iraq, then Operation Deny Flight in Bosnia during the 1990s and Operation Palliser in Sierra Leone in 2000. She undertook an extensive re-fit during 2002, which prevented her from involvement in the 2003 Iraq War, but she was repaired in time to assist British citizens trapped by the 2006 Lebanon War. Following the retirement of her fixedwing British Aerospace Harrier II aircraft in 2010, Illustrious operated as one of two Royal Navy helicopter carriers. After 32 years, the oldest ship in the Royal Navy’s active fleet was formally decommissioned on 28 August 2014, although she will not be replaced until HMS Queen Elizabeth’s commissioning in 2017. The UK Ministry of Defence announced in 2012 that, once decommissioned, HMS Illustrious would be preserved for the nation. Although various proposals were put forward, including a £3m bid to turn the aircraft carrier into a hotel and museum, none were considered viable and at 09:30 on 7 December, HMS Illustrious slipped her ropes from Portsmouth Harbour for the last time. Hundreds of people, including excrew members, gathered at various vantage points between Portsmouth and Southsea to wave goodbye as she made her way to the Leyal Shipyard in Turkey where she will be recycled. It is a very sad time for the thousands of men and women that served in her, but her memory is kept alive by the HMS Illustrious Association. Its members are made up from those who served in her during her long career. Many pictures can be seen at www.hmsillustriousassociation.com. Turn to page 6 to read more about HMS Queen Elizabeth.

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde

Send in your photos for Photo of the Month

IT is the start of a new year and that can only mean one thing, it is time for the London Boat Show. Starting on page 21 you will find our four-page guide to this fantastic show from exciting new launches to activities to keep children entertained. Whether you are in the market to buy or simply enjoy looking at boats and kit, the show always offers a great day out. If you would like to buy a boat but think you cannot afford it, or at least not the kind of boat you would like, read A Shared Dream on page 39. Stephen Benham bought an Oyster 55 for £4,000. Do not believe me? You will have to read Stephen’s story to find out more. Were you there to wave goodbye to HMS Illustrious? Despite efforts to save her as a tribute to the decommissioned Invincible Class aircraft carriers, after serving her country for 32 years, her final days will be spent in a Turkish scrapyard. It is not the ending she deserves and it is a sad close to her story. If you have photos or memories of Lusty please send them in.

20

We will include some of your Lusty photos in Photo of the Month. Turn to page 15 and you will find the winners of 2016’s Photo of the Month. We are always incredibly impressed by the standard of photos sent in by readers and we look forward to seeing many more this year. So, when you are out and about have a camera – or your phone – to hand to capture that perfect shot. Go to the Readers’ Gallery at the All at Sea website and you will see all the pictures that have been sent in. As well as All at Sea’s photo competition there are other maritime competitions for amateur photographers such as Maritime Poole, which is mentioned in this month’s news. As part of European Maritime Day, people are invited to send in photographs around any subject matter that reflects and celebrates our relationship with the sea and makes Poole a great place to live and work. Have you started planning your holidays yet? It can be a great way to beat the January blues. There are so many fantastic boating holiday locations it can be hard to choose the best one for you. Do you go for a tried and tested classic spot or try something a little different? In this month’s holiday special we have been uncovering some of the 2017 hotspots, but we would also love to hear about the holidays you have booked – where and when are you going this year? Back in the UK, if you spot any of the All at Sea team at the London Boat Show give us a wave.

RYA WELCOMES TOP FUNDING THE RYA welcomed UK Sport’s funding announcement for sailing, which will underpin the sport’s World Class Programme for the 2017-2020 Olympic cycle. As a multi medal-winning sport for the fifth consecutive Games and top nation at the Rio Olympic sailing competition, the sport has been granted Band 1 status and £26.231 million to support its performance efforts towards Tokyo 2020. RYA Performance Director John Derbyshire said: “We are proud that sailing once again delivered against its medal targets and contributed towards a hugely successful British performance

at Rio 2016. Clearly such a strong British team performance across the board and a difficult economic climate have posed some challenges and necessitated tough decisions for UK Sport. “We are grateful to the UK Sport Board for the continued commitment they have shown to the RYA’s World Class Programme as a conscientious and successful beneficiary of both government and National Lottery funds. “There will be a continued need to co-fund and source additional income streams in support of our programmes, but the decision is very welcome and we can move forward into the new cycle with

clarity and confidence in our plans.“ With sailing not currently on the Paralympic Games programme for Tokyo 2020, the sport is not eligible to receive a World Class Programme Paralympic funding award. The RYA will, however, continue to invest strategically in racing at selected Sailability and regional High Performance Clubs with the aim of developing racing participation and supporting World Sailing towards having the sport reinstated for the 2024 cycle. Read more about the plans for Tokyo in this month’s RYA column on page 40.

NACRA 17 CONVERTS TO FOILING THE World Sailing Council has confirmed the Nacra 17 will convert to foiling for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the only foiling class among the 10 Olympic sailing classes. Nacra 17 Rio 2016 silver medallist and winner at December’s Melbourne Sailing World Cup Lisa Darmanin (AUS) said: “I am excited and a little scared. When we first start foiling the race course will be pretty scary at times, but come the Games it will be incredible.” Helm John Gimson and crew Anna Burnet (GBR), who came third in Melbourne’s Sailing World Cup Final, anticipated the switch and have been sailing a foiling Nacra 20 in Bermuda, plus John spent time on an AC45 during the last America’s Cup cycle. John said: “We are really excited about it. I think it is going to be quite a full-on year getting used to foiling, but I think it is good for the long term. It is cool for the sailors to be the only foiling Olympic class and I think it will open up a new world for the spectators, and bring the Olympics into the 21st century.” To retrofit the current generation of Nacra 17s would compromise performance according to Jason Waterhouse, Lisa Darmanin’s helm, and the plan is for brand new boats to be

manufactured. It is thought the new fleet will be ready in time for the European Championship at Kiel, Germany, in July. However Jason has some reservations that the new technology may price youth and developing nations out of the mixed gender class. “For a kid it is going to be harder to convince mum and dad or a federation to fund them in the Nacra, without a result to help them out. The positives are it is a new challenge and development is part of the sport; it will be good for sailing’s image.” Watch a video of Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin discussing the news at the All at Sea Facebook page. www.facebook.com/allatseanewspaper

Cowes Harbour Commission’s first Port Operative Apprenticeship went to 21-year-old Sam Saunders. Sam will be based at Shepards Wharf Marina, where he will learn a range of skills relating to moving and storing boats, marina maintenance, environmental good practice, health and safety, customer service, mooring and berthing boats. He will be working towards the SQA Diploma in Maritime Studies: Marinas and Boatyards.

NEW MILESTONES FOR BRITISH BOATING FROM PAGE ONE: Frenchman Thomas Coville clipped eight days off the previous best time for sailing solo around the globe in a 102ft boat designed for a full crew, and more than 20 days off the record our own Dame Ellen Macarthur bravely broke as a 28-year-old in 2005 to world-wide acclaim. As we acknowledge the achievement across the Channel we can celebrate the success of Alex Thomson aboard Hugo Boss who rounded Cape Horn on Christmas Day near the top of the leader board and the fantastic results our sailing team brought home from the 2016 Rio Olympics last summer, we can only ask whatever next? Well, for a start, there is Sir Ben Ainslie’s BAR challenge for the America’s Cup in Bermuda which started with a race around the Isle of Wight 166 years ago. The iconic trophy has never been back to its rightful home in the UK. Could 2017 be the year for much delayed success?

And while our top racers set the standards, look also to the successes of our commercial maritime teams. Our superyacht boat builders are world-renowned for putting the final finishing touches of luxury aboard the booming superyacht industry. Sunseeker goes from strength to strength, Princess yachts are powering ahead. Fairline has been resurrected. The industry is taking on apprentices to gear up for the future that will keep our post Brexit industry on the front row of the marine grid. According to the UK Marine Industries Alliance the marine leisure sector leads the world in powerboat construction and high value sailing yachts. Super yachts have an annual turnover of £420 million and employ more than 3,600 people. The UK marine industry as a whole manufactures and provides support services in the leisure, naval, commercial, offshore renewable energy and other smaller sectors. It includes over 5,000

companies across the UK and employs nearly 90,000 people, The leisure marine sector is made up mainly of small and medium-sized businesses and mixes service and manufacturers. Three world-leading marine clothing brands are based in the UK as well as many international yacht designers. The sector includes many specialist equipment manufacturers and charterers – Sunsail has just booked its 500,000th sailor in 2016. Growth in emerging markets will lead to increased demand as well as increased capital investment in the UK, all adding to the marine industries’ contribution of £3.5 Billion to Britain’s wealth. All of this points to a buoyant market place for leisure boaters or anyone who wants to get out on to the water – just look at the increase in All at Sea’s expanded boat sales section, courtesy of Boatshed, on pages 34-37

A £120m investment will mean that Portsmouth Naval Base will be ready for Britain’s biggest ever warship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon told personnel at the ship’s new home. The Defence Secretary was speaking during a tour of the new facilities being built to support the first of the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers. In order to prepare the harbour and dockyard infrastructure for the 65,000-tonne carriers, 276 metres of jetty have been reinforced with over 3,300 tonnes of new steel work. New navigation lights have been installed in the harbour and Solent, with huge new

Mike Howarth, managing director of BAE Systems, which is responsible for project management of the work on the Ark Royal building and other facilities in support of the new carriers, said: “Our part of the work includes the renovation and modernisation of existing buildings to form state-of-the-art offices, a visitor centre, a reception area and a logistics centre, as well as investing in new technology and security processes. The work is on course to be complete in early 2017.” It is expected HMS Queen Elizabeth will leave Rosyth for sea trials in the early part of this year and arrive at her new home in Portsmouth in late spring.

fenders and gangways delivered to accommodate the giant ships. Sir Michael said: “Britain’s new aircraft carriers are the biggest and most powerful warships ever built for our Royal Navy. The Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales will lead our powerful and growing Royal Navy and reflect that, in a dangerous world, Britain is stepping up.” The Defence Secretary also opened the Ark Royal facility and met personnel responsible for clearing historic ordnance uncovered by dredging work. The Ark Royal will offer the ship’s company top-of-the-range facilities before they embark on the ship for training and operations.

CONCERNS about UK coastal security the UK has about 13,900km of coastline - are being raised with government ministers following a meeting of a parliamentary maritime group. Nearly 50 people attended the presentation by The Maritime Group and State21 including senior figures from marine companies and organisations.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Maritime and Ports is to seek assurances from Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill MP about measures to bolster Great Britain’s inshore borders in the fight against such threats as people traffickers, organised crime, illegal fishing, terrorists and drugs smugglers. It will also copy the letter to Shipping Minister John Hayes MP. Former First Sea Lord Admiral Lord West of Spithead said that a centralised capability of command and control to improve inshore security was “exactly what was needed and something he has proposed in the past”. Potential solutions for discussion including a new single government agency, a single command and control structure, central intelligence gathering and analysis and a central process for deploying resources. www.the-maritime-group.com www.state21.co.uk

THE London Boat Show will again be opening its doors at ExCel this month. Together with launches and hundreds of exhibitors there will be new attractions to entertain all the family. The London Stage returns with live entertainment throughout the 10 days including fashion shows, appearances from well-known pioneers, innovators and adventurers and A Question of Sailing based on the classic TV programme. The Dream Lodge Marina & Boating Lake is one of the new attractions at this year’s show. There will be beautiful yachts moored in the marina as well as places to eat and drink. The marina will also play host to on-the-water activities including the blind-boating

challenge and seabob demonstrations. Murray Ellis, Chief Officer of Boat Shows at British Marine Boat Shows, said: “As the first boat show of the European and world calendar, the 63rd London Boat Show will offer an impressive display of products and services to help visitors start the new season. We have an exciting array of interactive attractions offering visitors the chance to have fun whilst also learning something new about the world of boating.” The show, from 6 – 15 January, offers the perfect opportunity to discover and explore some of the most sought after products and upcoming trends for the year ahead. londonboatshow.com @LondonBoatShow Turn to page 21 to read All at Sea’s show preview.

Alex has been locked in battle with Armel since the race start on 6 November, with the Frenchman reclaiming the lead from the Brit on 3 December. When the duo passed the Kerguelen Islands they were joined by a French Navy helicopter and Alex told of his

joy of seeing another living being for the first time since setting off. Alex said: “It was fantastic to be able to see people for the first time in months. I gave them a wave, went up on deck and got my Union Jack flag out to wave the flag at them. “I was standing on deck going very fast, with the waves pouring over me and the helicopter pilot came and flew alongside me. He started flying the helicopter backwards – I was most impressed.” The Vendée Globe takes place every four years and has historically been dominated by the French. This year’s edition sees 29 IMOCA 60s compete in the race, including Alex, the only British entrant. While in third placed Sébastien Josse announced his retirement from the race.

Josse’s withdrawal was the second to be announced within 18 hours and came immediately after news of the successful evacuation of French skipper Kito de Pavant. The retirements of de Pavant and Josse bring to 10 the number of skippers who have been forced out of the race so far. The race is renowned for being one of the most gruelling sporting challenges in the world. Just 71 of the 138 starters since the race’s inception back in 1989 have successfully completed the race, and three have lost their lives along the way. Thomson is determined to be the first British skipper to win the race, which could take in the region of 80 days to complete. www.alexthomsonracing.com

MARITIME SKILLS

A unique maritime training facility in Dover has launched 20 new training courses following the success of its opening in September. the Maritime Skills Academy provides bespoke courses for those entering and working within the maritime industry, including work on cruise ships, superyachts, renewable support vessels and occupations within the oil and gas sector. With the Academy expecting to train over 2,500 participants over the next year, launching the new courses has created 12 new jobs.

THEA LAUNCHES

KAYAKER RESCUED IN SOLENT In December visitors and berth holders attended Noss on Dart Marina to be part of the naming and launch of thea. this is the final boat to be built on the site of what was Dartmouth’s last industrial shipyard, Philips Shipyard. Designed and built from scratch by retired boat-builder tom Owen and his wife lorraine, the 9.2m motorboat, made of marine plywood, mahogany and iroko timber, took the couple three weeks to design, followed by an 18 month build - around 9,000 work hours.

SUNSEEKER TRAINING the Bournemouth & Poole College has launched a new worldwide distributor training partnership with Sunseeker International. the college will host an annual four-day technical training course, which is open to all Sunseeker International distributor service technicians. More than 36 Sunseeker technicians from around the world enrolled on the first course.

A Royal Navy patrol boat saved the life of a 61-year-old whose kayak overturned in the Solent. Thanks to the vessel’s height advantage over the RNLI’s speedboats, the man was spotted about a mile away from his craft. The kayaker was carrying a handheld radio and was able to use it to call for help. A University Royal Naval Unit student on board Portsmouth-based HMS Smiter spotted a black object in the water off Lee-on-the-Solent as the boat and RNLI responded to the man’s SOS. Lieutenant Stephanie Buttery, Smiter’s Commanding Officer, said: “One of the students reported a black floating object and we went to investigate. As we got closer we realised it was the man. We

tried to recover him by the pilot ladder but he was in and out of consciousness, so we set up the recovery stretcher used for unconscious casualties.” The Coastguard helicopter winched the man to safety, before being flown to hospital in Southampton. Matt West, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s UK Coastguard Controller, said: “The handheld radio this kayaker used to call mayday via channel 16 saved his life. I would like to applaud him for having the correct safety equipment with him, and having the knowhow of how to use it and contact us. This is exactly why we recommend ensuring you have the correct safety equipment.”

DAVE BROWN RETIRES Dave Brown retired as Harbour Master at Ryde in December after working at the harbour since 1992. there will be a leaving do in the spring – details to be confirmed. All the best in your retirement Dave from All at Sea.

A new adventure is on the horizon for Ocean Youth Trust’s flagship John Laing. Since she was built this yacht has played an important role in many lives. She has sailed around the world and was chosen by the British Army for an expedition to Antarctica in 2001 and has completed many seasons of UK-based sail training in all weathers. Now under a new skipper and crew the boat will be renamed Yacht DISCOVERY. Skipper Andy Kinnaird said: “There is a refit planned and some really exciting adventures where you will be able to join us. We are busy planning our adventures for the year ahead with cruising around the French coast, Scilly Isles and a sail around Britain. The big adventure for 2017 will be the Atlantic Rally (ARC) where we will join hundreds of yachts to race across the Atlantic. “I wanted to create a business that helped people realise their dreams of sailing to far away places, whilst at the same time living out my own dream to visit places around the world on a sailing yacht. We also operate a free place system so that our trips really are open to everyone. On board we will have at least three experienced crew so this enables us to offer a much better learning experience and also open the crew up to people with no sailing experience. “As our name suggests life on board is all about discovery, learning, exploring and taking part.“ www.yachtdiscovery.co.uk

AS well as traditional photos and videos Boatshed.com is now using virtual reality technology to give customers a better understanding of the inside of boats for sale. As well as the many photos and videos used by yacht brokers, customers at Boatshed can now manipulate the

image of a boat on a screen or by looking at it through a VR headset. The use of VR technology will give customers an even better understanding of boats’ layouts. This will lead to fewer wasted visits to view boats and therefore faster boat sales.

Neil Chapman, Boatshed founder, said: “In the very competitive yacht brokerage marketplace, technology such as VR, our new boat listing app and machine learning are vital tools to keep our business selling more boats.” Take a look for yourself: BoatshedVR.com

The boat of the month is a 1978 wooden gaff rigged cutter 36. This is a lovely looking yacht with four berths and a cozy kitchen and saloon area. She is very traditional looking, with modern systems and a virtually unused Volva Penta engine. Replaced in 2014, the engine has only 70 running hours. If you are looking for a yacht with a more traditional appearance, then this could be the boat for you. For sale at £9,000, she is currently located on the south coast and is listed by Boatshed Brighton. HARBOUR PROJECT DELAYED THE Cowes Outer Harbour Project has been delayed as talks between the various bodies involved continue. Negotiations are carrying on towards finalising the Harbour Infrastructure Funding Agreement between Cowes Harbour Commission, the Homes and Communities Agency and the developer of the HCA’s Victoria Quay marina in East Cowes, which will enable delivery of Phases 2 and 3 of the Outer Harbour Project, the Eastern Channel dredge and Shrape extension. The HIFA is not in a form in which it can be approved by the relevant Boards.

The result is that it will not be possible to start the Eastern Channel dredge works in time to complete them by the environmental and operational closed season starting in April. The intention is to re-schedule the Eastern Channel dredging and construction of the Shrape extension to start after the 2017 summer season, subject to finalisation of the terms and conditions of the HIFA and the HCA and the marina developers being ready to proceed with the new marina and East Cowes project. www.cowesharbourcommission.co.uk

SPEEDERS FINED

Two boaters have been fined thousands of pounds by Southampton magistrates following two separate incidents in which they were deemed to have put the safety of other boaters at risk after flouting the speed limit. In one powerboat owner Mark Kelly, of Midland Road, Bournemouth was caught on the Lymington River at speeds up to 20 knots, which is more than three times the limit, and obstructing a harbour officer. He was given a £2,850 penalty. David Masters, of Thaxted, Essex, also admitted speeding on the river, navigating in a manner that endangered others and creating an excessive wash. He received a £1,750 penalty.

THE Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is over and Land Rover BAR have two vital bonus points for the next stage of the competition for the 35th America’s Cup. Land Rover BAR have now made the move to Bermuda, joining the three other teams already based in the home of the 35th America’s Cup. Three shipments of boats and equipment have been transported from the team’s Portsmouth base to Bermuda. This includes a fully equipped gym, crane, race and test boat and 42 containers full of kit.

About 50 per cent of the team will move to Bermuda, but many of them will be on rotation from Portsmouth, which will remain the core of the operation and the team’s home. In addition to the team members in Bermuda 54 family members will be moving full time including 30 children. The team has built a Virtual Chase Boat to allow engineers and performance analysts to monitor all the sailing in Bermuda from mission control in Portsmouth. #BringTheCupHome

NEW CHARITY FOR COWES WEEK THE Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, set up in memory of Olympian Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, is the new official event charity for Cowes Week. Encouraging youth participation in sailing will play a vital part in the continued success and popularity of the sport and more specifically of events like Cowes Week. CWL therefore felt it was right to appoint a national charity such as the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation

whose aim is to give young people the chance to enjoy the life changing challenges of sailing and to promote health and wellbeing. As part of ASSF’s involvement with the regatta, they will be providing on-water activities in Cowes during the week to encourage disadvantaged young people to get afloat and experience the excitement of sailing at this iconic event. www.andrewsimpsonfoundation.org www.cowesweek.co.uk

YAMAHA GOES ALL OUT

YAMAHA has announced new F25 and F100 outboards. Yamaha’s new F25 is around 25 per cent lighter, giving it a great power-toweight performance. There are also features to make life on and off the water more enjoyable and relaxing. For example, portability and storage are easier thanks not only to the lighter weight, but also the new carryhandle design and the two conveniently placed resting pads. Maintenance is simple too. An easyaccess hose connector on the lower cowling allows you to flush salt and dirt from the waterways without starting the engine - a quick, simple way to reduce corrosion and extend the life and resale value of the engine.

The new F100 will be available early in 2017. This latest-generation F100 is faster and more powerful. These factors contribute to making boats feel livelier and more responsive and provide the ideal solution for owners of older two-stroke engines who want to enjoy the benefits of having the latest four-stroke technology. The F100 not only delivers this higher level of performance, but does it even more smoothly and quietly, with minimal sound and vibration levels thanks to the re-design of the exhaust system, the addition of an intake silencer and the improved rigidity of the engine unit itself. Both engines will make their UK debut at the London Boat Show. www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A with Miranda Merron who took the Class win, with Halvard Mabire, on board Campagne de France, in the 2016 RORC Transatlantic Race.

TELL US ABOUT THE NEW BOAT CAMPAGNE DE FRANCE.

It is a Mabire-Nivelt designed Class40. She will be a good all-rounder and I could not wait to get on the water when she arrived.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE SO FAR?

I would say The Route du Rhum 2014. I secretly wanted to finish in the top ten out of 43 Class40s, and finished sixth. Other types of challenges include dealing with dismastings, or keeping the boat and those on board safe in extraordinary seas.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM RACE TO TAKE PART IN? Any oceanic race, preferably downwind.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SAILING? Freedom and long-distance racing and constantly trying to get the most out of the boat, minimising mistakes, always learning. And moonlit nights, or dark nights full of millions of stars, phosphorescent dolphins like torpedoes, sunrise, surfing downwind, the list can go on.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? HOW DID YOU GET INTO SAILING?

My father taught me to sail in dinghies. My first outing was in an Optimist when I was five on the River Seine, south of Paris. I sailed dinghies on and off until I graduated from university. In adult life, I started hanging out on pontoons at events looking for rides – the way we all used to get into sailing.

YOU WERE GOING TO RACE IN THE TRANSAT LAST YEAR. WHY DID IT NOT HAPPEN?

I could not take part because my new boat was late, which was a shame. I have raced once before in The Transat, and it really is the mother of all solo transatlantic races. Both an adventure and a challenge.

Go for it! A lot of boats are perfectly suited to woman-sized sailors. Do not be afraid to ask questions, and do not expect to make lots of money. But freedom has no price.

WHICH SAILORS HAVE INSPIRED YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

Dame Naomi James, Sir Francis Chichester, Eric Tabarly and Peter Blake.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?

In ocean racing you have not earned your beer at the finish unless you have had a good weather spanking somewhere along the line. www.mirandamerron.com Miranda has been sailing professionally for the past 15 years, mainly in offshore racing, and has competed in solo, double-handed and fully-crewed races, including the Route du Rhum, the Transat, Quebec – Saint Malo and the Volvo Ocean Race. She has won the Transat Jacques Vabre and Round Britain & Ireland races. In 2009, she was navigator with the all-female team on the Open 60 Aviva, when the team set a new world record for Round Britain & Ireland, taking 16 hours off the previous record.

This sort of pattern repeats itself in any and all coast guard services, but there can also be military, customs, security and educational elements to any service. There are great differences, and also many similarities, among the various agencies around the globe, which this book explores.

experts’ forum start the new year the safe way with lifeJacket maintenance It might look good on the outside but do you know how the inside is looking?

Jeremy Dale, managing Director of cowesbaseD seasafe systems, explains why regular maintenance of lifeJackets is essential. For some reason many people treat lifejackets in the same way as they treat old coats, in other words they pass them down and do not throw them away. They are kept somewhere on the boat for when those dirty jobs need to be done or in case they are required when extra people come on board.

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. changing attituDes We have to start changing our attitude towards lifejackets and their upkeep. From the moment you buy a lifejacket the clock starts ticking towards the first service. Lifejacket manufacturers will, of course, offer guarantees but that does not mean nothing needs to be done for a year or two. If you were going mountain climbing and your life was dependant on a rope, I guarantee you would check the rope in great detail. In just the same way if you were jumping out of a plane you would check your parachute. So why do we not check and maintain our lifejackets in the same way? Basically it is because we do not think we will ever use them. The clue is in the name – lifejackets. They are designed to save our lives, when and if that moment arises. Manufacturers spend a lot of time and money designing and testing lifejackets so that when you need to use one it will help save your life. However it falls upon us, the user, to make sure that they are always maintained in tip top order. check the insiDe All too often a lifejacket looks great on the outside but things are not so good on the inside. The photograph shows what could be lurking inside your lifejacket cover. The best way to look after yours is a regular quick look at the Co2 bottle and firing system. Make sure the Co2 bottle is screwed in tight and there are no rusty areas. Check the firing system is in good order and the securing nut is tight and, finally, check that the firing cartridge is in date.

Check for any wear on the outside of the lifejacket cover, and if there is then double check the corresponding area on the inside to ensure that the bladder is not damaged. Make sure that if you open up your lifejacket and unfold the bladder you make a note of the fold creases so that when you put it back together you replace everything in the same way the manufacturer did, in other words follow the creases. Ensure that you familiarise yourself with the manufacturer’s recommendations and specifications at all times.

“all too often a lifejacket looks great on the outside but things are not so good on the inside” regular checks Now we come to the ongoing checking and maintenance. Unlike the commercial user there is no regulation for recreational sailors to have their lifejackets checked and certificated annually, however an annual inspection by a service centre makes sense. By having your lifejacket tested each year by a service centre you will have the peace of mind that, should you depend on your lifejacket to help save your life, it will. SHOW TIME The London Boat Show is the place to be this month to discover the most sought-after marine products and trends for the year ahead.

Images: On Edition

T

he London Boat Show really does offer something for everyone. Whether a seasoned boater buying a new boat or enthusiasts looking for a entertaining day out with friends and family there is plenty to keep you busy at London’s ExCel. Not only will there be more than 300 exhibitors, many with world and European debuts, but there are attractions for visitors of all ages.

Murray Ellis, Managing Director at British Marine Boat Shows, said: “We have a number of leading global brands as well as world product launches confirmed for January’s 63rd London Boat Show, with more exhibitors signing up every day. “With some great attractions including the show’s stage providing live entertainment, and the pool area where visitors can have a go at a number of onthe-water activities, this year’s show is set to be yet another exciting event.”

LONDON STAGE

The show’s London Stage will be the place to be for live entertainment throughout the 10 days. Along with musical performances there will be fashion shows every day highlighting the current trends in boating from some of the world’s leading marine designers and, not to be missed, Sky Sports Presenter Alec Wilkinson will host a regular Sailing Uncovered chat show with personalities including Mike Golding sharing their inspiring stories and knowledge. Visitors will be able to put questions to the experts and hear from well-known pioneers, innovators and adventurers who have explored the globe. One very familiar name is Dee Caffari, the first woman to have sailed single-handed and non-stop around the world in both directions, and the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world a total of three times. Dee will take part in A Question of Sailing, based on the classic TV show, along with Saskia Clarke, Olympic gold medallist and Rolex World Sailor of the Year. Alex Alley will also be on the London Stage. Alex, who has written about his record attempt in All at Sea, is aiming to break the Solo Around the World Record for a boat 40ft or less with his PixelBoat. So called because anyone can purchase pixels on the hull. British sailor Alex Thomson is currently competing to be the first British sailor to win the Vendée Globe. Head to the stage to hear Vendée stories and to keep up-to-date with what other pro sailors are planning this year.

FOR THE KIDS GET ACTIVE WITH ROCKLEY Book your child onto one of the many water activities taking place on the Watersports Park for free. All fully supervised by Rockley Watersports, children can try their hand at kayaking, sailing or on water Zorbing. LIVE SHOWS Keep your kids entertained with live music, fashion and dance shows while you can sit back and relax. A QUESTION OF SAILING Based on the TV show Sky Sports presenter Alec Wilkinson will host this quiz show, which will be full of facts, fun and celebrity sailors plus you could be on a team. Boats, kit, clothing, holidays, marinas, accessories, you will find it all at the London Boat Show. Turn the page for the full exhibitor list and kit and boat highlights.

ON THE WATER

A relaxed setting will be the new Dream Lodge Marina & Boating Lake, which will see beautiful yachts moored in the marina as well as offering places to eat and drink. Beside the Dream Lodge Marina is the Watersports Park. Providing activity both on the water and land, this interactive area offers visitors the chance to try out and see some of the latest watersports trends.

NEW BOATS AT LONDON ANCASTA Stand: E110 www.ancasta.com Prestige 630 UK debut £1,188,522 The Prestige 630, a 19m luxury flybridge motor yacht, was launched at Cannes Yachting Festival in September and will make its UK debut at London. Nick Hatfield, Ancasta’s Prestige Brand Manager, said: “We are extremely excited about the London Boat Show. It is the first time we have shown three of the largest Prestige Yachts in the UK.” Also at the show will be the Beneteau Sense 57, the big sister of the new Sense 51, which premiered in Paris in December, and the Beneteau Gran Turismo 40 and Swift Trawler 30 and 44. On the sail side, Ancasta will be displaying the Beneteau Oceanis 38.1, 41.1 and 45.

Dad’s Boats will be exhibiting a production model of The Pedal Boat at the show as well as their hand crafted ornamental wooden propellers. David Williams (Dad) built his first Pedal Boat in the 1950s. David’s son-in-law, Stephen Pitkethly of Dad’s Boats, said, “Being at the 2017 London Boat Show is important for us because we are a new company with a unique product and we need to let people know we exist and raise awareness of The Pedal Boat. London is a great place to do that.” Stand: DO24 / www.dadsboats.com

GIBBS BOAT SALES Stand: C150 www.gibbsboatsales.co.uk Grandezza 25 S The new Grandezza 25 S combines craftsmanship, modern sporty design and great performance. The cockpit includes ample room for several people to lounge comfortably and to enjoy all the delights of sunny days. By folding down the backrest you create one large backward facing sun lounge area for relaxation. The light-filled cabin is designed for resting and sleeping and works perfectly due to its open plan design.

Stand: G100 www.sunseeker.com Manhattan 66 world debut £1,774,800 The Manhattan 66 is designed to maximise entertainment options with panoramic hull and saloon windows providing light-drenched living spaces throughout. Its new deep V hull offers signature Sunseeker performance whilst its open-plan layout provides enough space on board to rival much larger yachts. Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker International, said: “We are really looking forward to launching the all new Manhattan 66, which is already generating substantial interest. Following the success of the Manhattan 52, the first in a series of new Manhattan models, it underlines our ability to keep

The SpearFish 15 Low Power Planing Inflatable Motor Canoe is long and relatively narrow giving her a very efficient shape. She also has good stability, can carry three adults (or two and two children) and rolls up to fit in the back of your car.

The Spirit 31 has been a popular model with its original inboard shaft drive design, however by moving the engines to the back of the boat with outboards, a huge amount of interior space is freed up to allow a double berth cabin in the midship. This is in addition to a separate double cabin forward and a separate heads/shower compartment. Like the inboard version, the Spirit 31 Outboard is available as a hard top or open version.

PRINCESS YACHTS Stand: D160 www.princessyachts.com Princess S60

DID YOU KNOW?

Princess Yachts are starting the new year with the global launch of the all-new S60 sportbridge yacht at the show. Also on display will be the 75 Motor Yacht, Princess 60, Princess 49 and V48. The popular Project 31 ‘Charlotte’ will also be back portraying the journey of the brand alongside her current sisters.

Burton Waters Boat Sales has extended its partnership with Jeanneau into its Ipswich operation. The partnership began in July 2015 initially selling Jeanneau Power Boats from its Lincoln office. Burton Waters Boat Sales will be exhibiting at the London Boat Show where the Leader 30 will be making its UK debut. www.burtonwaters.co.uk

ThAIlAND – ANDAMAN SEA

Name: Dominik Sarapata “I was met by a lady with a warm smile from the charter company at Yacht Haven Marina in Phuket. I knew what I wanted to see: James Bond island, the Hongs, which are tidal lagoons encircled by towering limestone cliffs, Railey Beach, which is a climber’s paradise cut off from the roads by the sea and mountains and Phi Phi Islands with the monkey beach. I started to think about the sea turtles I would encounter while snorkelling over the most colourful reefs that I have ever seen. Sailing in Thailand surprised me. It was 10 days of anchoring near wonders of nature accessible by a short tender ride. I met the friendliest people with a wide smile on their faces and ate fresh, cheap and mouth-watering food. The warm sea breezes led me to so many beautiful places to visit.

hitehaven was England’s third largest port behind London and Bristol in the 18th century, with coal and iron exports bringing wealth to the area. Merchants and sea captains took advantage of the relationships forged with the new Americas and dipped their fingers into slavery, as some of the finer merchants’ houses in the town bear witness to. The herring industry brought another wave of trade in the 1960s and now the shellfish catch keeps this port on the map with mostly scallops and nephrops (a genus of lobsters). The daily passage is to the Isle of Man now rather than the West Indies, but there is still a tang of rum in the air and ample memories of the coal industry that once employed so many here. This is also the start (or finish) of the famous coast to coast walk or ride. See www.sustrans.co.uk to find out more. Whitehaven makes a very welcome stop en route to Scotland (50 miles) and Northern Ireland and is a prime weekend break for Manx sailors stocking up. Protected from the sou’westerlies by the landmass of St Bees, the marina at Whitehaven is a calm haven, and today the sun shines on the Solway Firth and we can see snow on the hills of Gallaway. Old pal Mark Bowden (Marina Projects) shows me round.

TOUCH OF ZEST

Whitehaven has some surprising food choices as this is home to BBC One Show’s chef Ricky Andalcio, who runs Zest Restaurant and the more casual Zest Harbourside, which is open daily, as is the renowned fish and chip shop Crosby’s. Zest’s claim to fame is that Tony Blair dined here in 2001, but do not let that put you off. The casual Zest Harbourfront is open daily and the burgers make a great lunch. The more refined Zest Restaurant up the road is open Wednesday – Sunday and is a good choice when looking for a special night out. Crosby’s Fish & Chips had a fine reputation but has recently changed hands. The word is that quality is still good but any updates will be gratefully received. There is a good choice of bars, cafes and restaurants spreading back from the harbour. First off, coffee. Choose between Anna’s on the quay, or head up to Westminster Café, which is a friendly place where we are plied with mince pies, rum butter and hot chocolate, with, yes, rum… a story is emerging here.

We pass the Rum Museum on our way past the Market Deli and an interesting bit of wall art to celebrate the connection between Gulliver’s Travels’ Jonathon Swift and Whitehaven painted by Keswick artist Paul Wilmott. Café West is another favourite, on King Street, that helps get people with learning issues back to work through training and encouragement. The bread is good here.

WHITEHAVEN Located on the west coast, outside the Lake District National Park, Whitehaven is a popular town and port in Cumbria.

SCALLOP SEASON

There are a couple of large trawlers in the harbour and I see a scattering of ruddy purple shells on the quayside heralding the start of scallop season. We found them in The Waterfront (10 per cent discount to berth holders) and had a good lunch. My scallops with melt in the mouth pork belly were fresh, plump and excellent value at £9.95. The cod and chips came with the usual mushy peas and good chunky tartare, but also a small Caesar salad – a nice touch. Mark had the crab linguine which had a superb sauce, lightly spiced to give a nice chili frisson. The Mussel Bay Marlborough was lovely and light and available here by the glass. The best pub on the quay is The Vagabond, with a good range of ales and a wood fired pizza oven. This is a cosy lock down on a windy night and good value. The hike: along the coast path to St Bees (www.colourfulcoast.org.uk) or 2.6 miles to Sandwith, with lunch in the Dog and Partridge, then on to St Bees to enjoy ice cream at Hartleys sea front café. Details can be found in the marina office. The drive: Lakes Distillery, CA13 9SJ. I liked the whisky best. There is a bistro here, and you could go large and have the tour and afternoon tea or American pancakes with whisky sultanas and caramelised apples. Or you could drive out to the Inn at Ravenglass.

All At SeA january 2017 As the fog descends, the two Enterprise dinghies sail past the buoy marking the entrance to Calais Harbour

makINg NEwS These days we are rarely surprised by commercial publicity stunts, but turn the clock back 60 years and the Enterprise dinghy made headline news in a very innovative way..

An early start, 0330 on Dover Beach, launching by the light of flares

also well stocked with alcohol. By the time the three-boat convoy was midchannel, the ability of the crew of the guard boat to navigate their own way had been lost and indeed, with fog forming in the channel, they would have gotten lost if it was not for the skills of the two Enterprise helms who helped shepherd the boat the rest of the way. Eventually the two Enterprise dinghies, followed by the guard boat, made a safe landfall at 10.05, where the local police and customs were somewhat bemused by the arrival of four dinghy sailors and a motorboat full of newspaper hacks. SUCCESS CONTINUES In the end everyone joined together for steaming cups of hot French coffee and the job was done. The News Chronicle got its headline story (it even made headline news in France

I

n our modern world of slick consumerism we all but take it for granted that the launch of a new product will be accompanied by a number of promotional events. But go back 60 years and such an activity would far more likely be classed as a ‘publicity stunt’ – a phrase that is rarely heard these days. Back in the still austere mid-1950s, some of these ‘stunts’ really were daring and rightly featured in the newspapers of the day. Indeed, it was a newspaper, the News Chronicle, that was responsible for one of the most daring ‘publicity stunts’ of the day. Ten years after the end of the war, with the economy recovering, owning a small boat was high on the list of things that people wanted.

IN NEED OF HOLT London based boat builder and designer Jack Holt had already shot to fame with his all-purpose GP14 dinghy, which was being built in big numbers. The News Chronicle reasoned correctly that if they backed a new dinghy, circulation of the paper would get a boost. Jack Holt was seen as the safe option for a design, with the design criteria requesting a boat that was more ‘general purpose’ that the GP14, which was largely being seen out on the race-course. Jack duly obliged and designed a somewhat prettier boat than the rather boxy GP14. At a time when there were still significant shortages

Headline news... in France. The arrival of the two boats makes headlines both sides of the channel

as well) and the Enterprise dinghy was given an immediate boost of publicity. If there is an irony in the story it would be in the fact that far from being more ‘general purpose’ than the GP14, the Enterprise instead turned out to be a superb racing machine and 60 years on is still raced hard. Since that chilly start over 20,000 Enterprise dinghies have been built but the class retains the blue sails, making it one of the most easily identifiable of boats. In recent years the Enterprise class have re-enacted the crossing, choosing to sail over on a sunny afternoon, a far cry from that first crossing in the darkness and poor visibility, all in the name of a good story! These days, of course, journalists, like all sensible boating people, are far more careful about alcohol at sea in the wake of changing attitudes to drinking and driving on land. But they still like a good story!

of materials Holt had some blue sailcloth left over, so the new boat was given a suit of blue sails rather than the conventional white. Given that the boat was meant to be multi-purpose, the trick now was how to launch the new boat to the sailing public. By now the London Boat Show was well established (All at Sea January 2014 covered the history of the London Boat Show) but this had the boats indoors at Olympia. PUBLICITY STUNT REQUIRED What was needed was a publicity stunt and Jack Holt came up with a plan for very special one. At 0330 on the cold and dark morning of 7 January 1956, two of the new Enterprise dinghies were rigged on the beach at Dover by the light of handheld flares. The plan was for the two dinghies to sail across the channel, with a guard boat loaded up with the ‘gentlemen of the press’ following along behind. For the two crews, Bruce and Rosemary Banks in one boat, Bobby Pegna and Flavia Nunes in the other, it would be a cold and damp day as there was none of the modern sailing gear that is now so effective at keeping sailors warm and comfortable. It was still dark when the two dinghies were launched through the surf but with the highly-experienced Bruce Banks leading the way, good progress was made towards the French coast. Astern of them things were not going so well, however, as the guard boat, being full of journalists, was

BIDDING Farewell to the ‘Greatest’ When legendary yachtsman Paul Elvström died the world of sailing said goodbye to the greatest small boat sailor. David Henshall looks back at Paul’s incredible career. Paul demonstrating his hiking techniques. Image: Deaves/IFA

Paul with Finn and family; together they were a dominant part of the sailing scene in the 1950s. Image: Deaves/IFA

Finn dinghy (as it still is today) and with four wins in the seven heats, Paul comfortably took his second gold ahead of Great Britain’s Charles Currey.

“Single minded and dedicated, his boat preparation was only exceeded by his own physical self-preparation and the rigours of yearround practice” PURE DETERMINATION

A measure of Paul’s physical dominance over the Finn class was demonstrated in 1955 in a windy regatta at Zeebrugge. A capsize in those pre-buoyancy bag days could be a race ending event, but not for Paul. He swam to the shore, towing his waterlogged boat behind him, emptied out the water and then re-joined the race. At the 1956 Olympics Paul won five of the heats to again easily win the gold, and although things were much harder for him in Naples in 1960, he won again. By now he was successfully racing around the world in everything from

B

ack in 2012, when the drama of the Olympic Regatta was unfolding at Weymouth, the media coined the phrase ‘the Battle of the Bay’. The Team GBR representative in the Finn class, Ben Ainslie, was locked in a titanic struggle for supremacy and the gold medal. In the end, Ben triumphed over his Danish competitor, taking gold and his fifth medal in five successive Games, as well as picking up a knighthood. His victory also elevated him above another Dane, the great Paul Elvström who, with four successive gold medals, had been, until that time, the most successful Olympic yachtsman.

THE GREATEST

Yet Paul Elvström, who died in early December at the age of 88, was so much more than just an Olympic yachtsman. It is not a mere superlative to describe him as the greatest, the most complete small boat sailor the world has ever seen, and it is doubtful if the spread of his achievements will ever be matched. To go with his four Olympic medals in the physically demanding Finn class there were a number of other Olympic attendances in other classes. During his long career Paul won 11 world titles and had countless other championship wins across various sailing classes.

Dragons to 505s. This incredible run of success came down to the Elvström approach to competition. Single minded and dedicated, his boat preparation was only exceeded by his own physical selfpreparation and the rigours of year-round practice - sailing out through the Baltic ice in the days before wetsuits.

LEGEND LIVES ON

Taking the famous red crown as his logo, Paul set up a sail-making business and added boat building, whilst also being a constant designer and innovator. He can be credited with the design of the rig for the OK dinghy, then with his ground breaking Trapez, introduced single-handed sailing from ‘out on the wire’. He won the 1981 Half Ton Cup, raced at Poole, then in 1984, at the age of 56, he missed out by the narrowest of margins on yet another Olympic medal, this time when crewed by his daughter Trine in the highperformance Tornado catamaran. They are the only father/daughter combo to have competed together at the Olympics. However you look at the life of Paul Elvström, the picture is the same. It is of a colossus whose record of success and legacy to the sport marks him out as that true wearer of the mantle that goes with being ‘the greatest small boat sailor’ that the sport has ever seen. . . or will ever see.

BORN TO SAIL

He was born on 25 February, 1928 into a seafaring family, living in a house that backed on to the Sound that separates Denmark from Sweden. Despite the wartime years when Denmark was occupied by the Nazis, Paul was able to continue sailing and honing his skills. With the first post war Games in London in 1948, Paul fought hard to qualify for Denmark in the singlehanded Firefly dinghy. As a somewhat gauche 20-year-old, he needlessly retired from the first race, before going on to build a winning score. It all came down to the last race, which he won to take the gold medal. By Helsinki in 1952, the singlehanded class was sailed in the

PLASTIC POLLUTION Last year Lizzy Foreman took part in the Mini Transat and hopes to race in the Vendee Globe one day. In this series the experienced racer takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the challenge these men and women face. This month Lizzy looks at an issue that affects us all – plastic pollution. Plastic pollution is an undeniable problem facing our world’s oceans; a staggering eight million metric tons finish up in it each year. A lot of this waste eventually ends up in five of the Earth’s major subtropical gyres, which are large circular systems of ocean currents caused by global wind patterns and forces resulting from the rotation of the Earth. Due to currents flowing around the gyres being very strong, plastic waste, which has travelled from land or been dumped directly in the sea by passing ships, gets sucked in to the centre. Here it is unable to escape, and so giant garbage patches form. Some are known to be twice the size of France. Few countries have accepted responsibility for the pollution, as the origin of the plastic is difficult to trace and the gyres are far from any coastline. It has come down to the individual to realise a moral obligation to protect the environment through recycling and reduced consumption of plastic.

Plastic pollution greatly affects the economies and inhabitants of coastal and waterside communities worldwide. It causes increased expenditure for beach cleaning, public health and waste disposal. The fishing industry has been affected by reduced catches, damaged equipment and contaminated fish, while shipping industries face high costs for waste management, engine repair and removal of plastic from harbours and marinas.

Mermaids’ tears, also known as resin pellets or nurdles, are used in the manufacturing of plastic products. Although plastic is resistant to natural biodegradation processes, it does degrade by exposure to the sun, a process called photo-degeneration. Plastic particles thinner than a human hair are ingested by zooplankton, the basis of the food chain. Eventually humans could also consume these microplastics. Research into the effects on human health is ongoing. Microplastics are also used in the manufacturing of cosmetics and cleaning products, but the UK government has pledged to ban these by the end of 2017. You can check if you are using plastic-free products at www.banthemicrobead.org.

ToxIc subsTances

When plastics decompose they release numerous toxins into the oceans such as BPA, DEHP and BBzP. These toxins are easily ingested by marine life, posing

The Indian Ocean, North Atlantic Ocean and North Pacific Ocean all have significant garbage patches. Image: National Aquarium

a risk of global contamination and a threat to human health. For example, BPA is an oestrogenic, turning male fish into female fish when metabolised. Some of the affected fish have been found in British waters, and it has a huge negative impact on the fish population. The toxic chemicals released from plastics have also been associated with: n Asthma and allergies in children n Some types of cancer n Thyroid disruption and resulting weight gain n Reproductive and developmental problems n Brain and nervous system defects n Heart disease n Adverse effects on red blood cells and internal organs Plastic debris kills an estimated 100,000 marine mammals annually, as well as

millions of birds and fish. Mistaken for food and causing entrapment, plastic debris can result in starvation, laceration, infection and suffocation.

coraL reeF desTrucTIon

Old fishing gear, which is made from plastic, can be destructive to coral reefs by breaking off coral heads, while plastic bags can cover and suffocate coral. Although only covering one percent of the Earth’s surface, coral reefs support the highest marine biodiversity in the world while more than 500 million people depend on them for food, jobs and recreation. Let us hope this year sees an even bigger united force to tackle plastic pollution – taking part in a beach clean and reducing our consumption of plastic waste would certainly be a good resolution. A SHARED DREAM

When Stephen Benham bought an Oyster 55 for £4,000 his friends could not believe it. However Stephen has not looked back and believes he has discovered the best route to boat ownership. Stephen Benham bought an Oyster 55 for £4,000…

I

t amuses me to slip into conversations with friends, colleagues or acquaintances that I own a yacht. When they find out I own Brighton Belle, an Oyster 55, knowing that I am not a millionaire they ask: “How can you afford to set light to £500 notes, never mind the £50 notes for a normal yacht?” I started sailing yachts about 10 years ago. I was taken out in the Solent for a spin by a supplier and I was hooked. RYA Competent Crew, week-long cruises and then Day Skipper with a sailing adventure company followed. I started chartering Bavaria 36s as a skipper for weekends in the Solent. I steadily stretched myself to Channel crossings, even a night sail back from Cherbourg to Poole. It was fantastic fun, but it was always a problem finding a convenient weekend and a crew

wanting to join me in my next challenge. Not to mention chartering can cost a fortune. BRIGHTON BELLE I looked around for a better arrangement and came across Brighton Belle Sailing Club on the internet. Brighton Belle is a shared ownership yacht and I own share number 14 out of a potential 60. I paid the standard £4,000 for my share. I view it as a lifetime membership fee, even though the share can be transferred if I want to sell it. The yacht needs significant routine and annual maintenance. It is at sea for most weekends from January to May and constantly on a cruising programme from June to September. Maintenance costs are more than

covered, however, by members’ and guests’ daily sailing fees, which are £35 or £55 per day. In the two years I have ‘owned’ her we have renewed the rigging, bought a 10 man RIB and replaced the life raft, all major items. When we need to we will be able to replace even more expensive items like the sails and the electronic navigation from the maintenance fund we have built up. There are currently six skippers. With only a Day Skipper qualification I started as crew, quickly acted as mate on a few cruises and this year I am a ‘skipper in training’. We need more skippers so that we can extend the sailing programme and spread the load. SAILING PROGRAMME In the summer of 2015 we sailed to south-west England, Isles of Scilly and south-west Ireland. I would not have dreamed of sailing in the Atlantic, but with an experienced skipper we braved a

F7 wind over tide in the Shannon, saw the stunning Aran Islands, were invited for an evening race by Fenit YC (as long as we did not win and bought the drinks) and anchored in the cathedrallike Smerwick Bay. Last year, from June to August, we sailed to Tower Bridge, then along the coasts of northern France and southern England. Then, in September, we took Brighton Belle down to Lisbon for five months of sailing in the sunny Canary Islands. BRIGHTON BELLE CLUB The most important thing, however, is that Brighton Belle is a club. There is room for a wide range of sailing. Day sails out of Brighton with lunch whilst hove to under Beachy Head, pottering along the coast from marina to marina, the Dieppe Dash (class winners and second line honours in 2015) and the Royal Escape Races cater for every taste. My personal experience is that you can absorb all the great training on offer from experienced skippers or just sit back and enjoy the ride. It is up to you.

So why go to the expense of buying a yacht? Why worry about those expensive items that need repairing or replacing? Why worry about finding crew? For a small investment you can sail in a luxury, ketch-rigged Oyster 55. With this yacht you can cruise to places that would otherwise be out of range and make a load of new sailing buddies. Too good to be true? Give it a go. Brighton Belle welcomes guests - try a free trial day sail. Watch a video of Brighton Belle here: https://goo.gl/jkheGF www.brightonbellle.org SHARED OWNERSHIP Tell us about your experiences of shared ownership at the All at Sea Facebook page (www.facebook. com/allatseanewspaper) or email editor@allatsea.co.uk. BUYING AN OYSTER 55? A search around the brokerage ads showed a selection of Oyster 55s ranging in age from 21 to 30-years-old with prices from £121,619 to £347,484.

VISION FOR TOKYO 2020

As the curtain comes down on another successful Olympic quadrennium, All at Sea discovers that the British Sailing Team is already making its first in-roads towards Tokyo. By RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park There is great excitement about the Nacra moving to foiling. Image: British Sailing Team

their silver medal back in 1964. On one hand, it is a little bit disappointing that sailing will be outside of the city and the hub of the Olympic action, but the locals are really keen for the Olympics and for sailing to be in Enoshima. Everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming and, unlike the experiences in Brazil, it is incredibly well organised and orderly. In most ways that is great, but it also means that where you might think there is a little option for you to make some small gain in and around the fringes, it may be a lot harder in Tokyo because it is a much more regimented society. The sailing itself is in a big open bay, so quite different to the harbour venue that we had in Brazil. It will be quite warm and a predominantly sea breeze venue we believe, and so that is going to mean a different emphasis for the sailors during that time. Getting a good base set up and accommodation will be important, but will also be a challenge in Japan and because of the population density on shore things tend to be expensive. We will also have to think carefully about how we deal with logistics, made more complicated because the eight hour time difference between the UK and Japan is the worst that it could possibly be for jetlag. Most people find it worse than having a 12 hour shift. That does mean that doing short trips to the venue as we were able to do for Rio is pretty much impossible and we are going to need more recovery time factored in to be fully effective and ready to properly train hard. The training trips will therefore need to be a little bit longer and will need more planning and looked at carefully in terms of logistics and finances.

EVENTS CONFIRMED

F

or this Rio cycle, the British Sailing Team has continued to go from strength to strength. It was great that for the last couple of years, just as international competition was heating up towards the Games, we managed to top the World Championship medal table, the World Cup medal table and ultimately be top nation at the Olympics itself and the only nation to have sailors in every medal race. But the results at the Games, where a record 17 nations made the podium across the 10 events, show that our sport is becoming more competitive than it has ever been, and you do not need to do much wrong to find yourself dropping out of the medals.

We are delighted and proud to celebrate our successes this cycle, and for sailing to have played its part in a fantastic Games for the whole of Team GB. However we work in performance sport at the end of the day, so it is a natural process to be thinking about certain ‘could haves’ or ‘should haves’, and where we can make little refinements and improvements as a team to keep us fighting it out at the front of the fleet as we now turn our attention towards Tokyo 2020. We have had a period of reflection and analysis post-Rio to be clear about where we think there are opportunities for the Tokyo cycle, and one of the successful projects in 2016 was the submission of our initial 2017-2020 strategy to our funding partners UK Sport.

Commodore

This moved us six to nine months ahead of where we were four years ago. Following UK Sport’s funding announcement for sailing we are in a position to hit the ground running at the start of the new year.

TOKYO 2020

Tokyo is going to be a completely different venue, a completely different culture and we are really excited about that change. We had our first team trip there in October with some of the sailors and support staff getting their first sight of the venue and their first taste of the Japanese way of life. The sailing venue will be in Enoshima, about an hour outside of the city, which is where Keith Musto and Tony Morgan won

Another positive is the confirmation from World Sailing of what the events will be for the Tokyo Games. There had been a lot of debate around this subject, with an outcome not initially expected until the middle of 2017. Despite having a regulation that said they were not going to discuss the Olympic Classes in November, World Sailing duly did and confirmed the 10 events that were raced in Rio will be the 10 events that will be raced in Tokyo, albeit with some format changes and some equipment regulation changes, most notably in the Nacra 17. That decision gives a huge amount of stability to the sailors and confidence that they can crack on and initiate their

campaigns. At the same time, World Sailing is keen to consider the opportunity of an eleventh and possibly even twelfth event. The twelfth event could be an event for the existing athlete cohort, potentially creating the opportunity for sailors for the first time to be able to win more than one medal at an Olympic Games. There is great excitement about the Nacra moving to foiling – albeit with some challenges and cost implications, but the Class Association is working hard with the builders to move all that on. Theatre-style racing for the 49ers will make the final day of their regatta different and exciting as well.

PARALYMPIC PROGRAMME

Disappointingly, of course, while all the excitement is about new formats and possibly new events for Tokyo, there is the reminder that we are not going to be racing the Paralympic classes at the 2020 Games. There is still quite a lot of work to be done to move the Paralympic side of the sport on, although there is great commitment from World Sailing to ensuring that sailing is back on the Paralympic programme for 2024. The RYA is pulling together its disabled sailing strategy with a strong emphasis on supporting activity in the events that would make up the Paralympic disciplines at future Paralympic Games, and supporting the development of Paralympic sailing and the World Sailing disabled strategy to get the sport reinstated at the Paralympic Games. RYA CEO Sarah Treseder is heavily involved in leading that side and there is already a commitment both practically and financially to supporting postParalympic disabled sailing.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES

As we go on in terms of participation at the World Championships, increasing country numbers and supporting other developing nations I think you will see the RYA playing a significant role in that moving forward. The opportunities at the start of a new Olympic cycle are always exciting – new faces and new partnerships looking to make their mark at the front of the fleet and a new venue to get to know. We are looking forward to spending our next few years learning all about the ‘land of the rising sun’. Find out more about the British Sailing Team at www.rya.org.uk/ britishsailingteam

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

COBB’S QUAY MARINA

MORE INFORMATION Cobb’s Quay Marina, Poole, Dorset, BH15 4EL Tel: 01202 674299 www.cobbsquaymarina.co.uk www.mdlmarinas.co.uk

Cobb’s Quay Marina is a boating haven in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. SITUATED at Hamworthy in Holes Bay within Poole Harbour, Cobb’s Quay Marina is a firm favourite with both yachtsman and motor cruisers. A berth at this stunning location gives unrivalled access to the world’s second largest natural harbour, with plenty of wildlife and beautiful bays to explore and enjoy, as well as easy access to award-

winning sandy beaches including those at Studland, Sandbanks and Bournemouth. The marina has been awarded five Gold Anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association and is a member of the RYA’s Active Marina scheme and, as such, encourages and supports increased berth holder activity which includes training, cruising and social opportunities.

FACILITIES

BERTHING & STORAGE

Cobb’s Quay has 750 marina berths that can accommodate vessels up to 25m, as well as 250 dry stack berths for boats up to 10m. The dry stack gives customers unlimited launching seven days as week, 365 days a year. Simply call ahead and let the marina know you are coming and your boat will be ready and waiting, so you can just jump on board and set off for the day. The Freedom Berthing package gives owners far more than berth and marina facilities, it is a passport to extra rewards, benefits and savings, such as complimentary stays at more than 100 marinas both in the UK and Europe, discounts on boatyard services and fuel at cost.

Freedom Berthing package: n Complimentary stays at over 100 marinas n Save with fuel at cost n Introduce your friends and earn rewards n Unlimited free WiFi n Discounted boatyard services n Social MDL n Berth swap and experience other MDL Marinas n My MDL – online, anytime n Flexible contracts n Freedom to change marinas n Complimentary boat movements n Freedom to transfer your berth to a new boat owner

CRUISING

Offering year-round racing and sheltered waters, Cobb’s Quay is an excellent base with the Solent lying to the east and easy routes to the likes of the quaint Victorian town of Swanage and the beautiful Worbarrow Bay, which is close to Lulworth. It is also only a short stretch from Brownsea Island, which really is the perfect place to drop your anchor. Spend the day relaxing with a book, kayaking with the kids and friends or just spending time identifying the abundance of fish and wildlife both in the clear waters surrounding and on the island. From the marina, you can also travel further west which opens up extensive opportunities for weekend cruising to the unspoilt waters of Torbay. For longer distance cruise destinations of

a week or more, France, the Channel Islands or the West Country are all within reach and offer plenty of scope for exploring. What is more, MDL berth holders can take advantage of the company’s Freedom Berthing package, which gives complimentary stays at all of MDL’s marinas in the UK, Spain and Italy. The cruising network is extended even further to the northwest coast of France, with more than 100 marinas to choose from, all the way from Saint Valery on the shores of Normandy to Port Médoc in the Gironde. The Freedom Berthing package is used extensively by MDL’s 7,000 berth holders each year. Many boaters have spent weeks and even months exploring the French coast or just hopping around the marinas across the south of England.

LOCAL EATERIES

There are mancy choices for visitors when it comes to eating. There is the on-site restaurant, Cobb’s Quay Yacht Club, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week, serving up a range of dishes based on fresh local and seasonal produce in a stylish, friendly environment. However the culinary options do not end there, with Poole Quay and its huge array of restaurants including Italian Gossip and Banana Wharf a short journey away. Both offer spectacular harbour views and great menu choices. There are also a number of deli’s and food stalls, including some legendary fish and chips, as well as plenty of places to enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the comings and goings in the harbour.

THINGS TO DO

Offering a vibrant social scene, the marina plays an important part in the local community. The team holds a number of fundraising events to raise money for worthy causes, such as the popular annual fishing competition that is run by the marina manager Dave Wilson. Now in its eighth year, the Open Species Fishing Competition is a fantastic family event that raises money for UK sailing rehabilitation charity Heroes on the Water. Cobb’s Quay Marina also benefits from a vibrant and social Berth Holders Association which runs a number of events each year. There is also the renowned Trolley of Treats that often makes a weekly appearance at the marina and is always around for special occasions delivering hot and cold drinks, chocolate treats and themed goodies for Valentine’s, Halloween, Christmas and more.

5 GOLD ANCHOR FOR LARGS YACHT HAVEN Largs Yacht Haven has received the industry’s highest award for the third time. After receiving top marks in 2010 and 2013, The Yacht Harbour Association awarded the 700-berth marina 5 Gold Anchors once more in recognition of the high standards not only of facilities, but of processes, systems, customer care and use of technology. “We are delighted to receive this result again,” commented Marina Manager Carolyn Elder. “We have maintained high standards over the 10 years of the scheme and are constantly looking at ways of investing and improving for the benefit of the berth holder. This is a huge team effort from all members of staff and recognises the hard work that is done throughout the year by everyone.”

After a large marina dredging operation at the start of 2016 and a new tarmac car park, this winter sees major investment into a further car park and boat storage area, upgraded facilities for dry berthing and a refurbishment of the shower block all in time for spring 2017. A new security access system is being installed in the New Year. For further information check out www.yachthavens.com

NEW HOIST DOCK FOR HAMBLE YACHT SERVICES A major civil engineering contract has started at Hamble Yacht Services to replace the boat lifting dock which, for the past 44 years, has serviced what is now one of the busiest boat lifting facilities in the UK. Construction of the new dock is scheduled to take 12 weeks and the replacement, which will accommodate the yard’s 80 tonne hoist and a second 40 tonne hoist, will be ready for the start of the spring sailing season. The new structure has been designed by Mayhew Callum Ltd and is being built by Walcon Marine, a leader in marina and yacht harbour construction. Walcon is putting some heavy resources behind the new build, including its fleet of three barges, ranging from 21 to 24 metres in length, to assist with construction and the movement of equipment. The new dock project represents another significant infrastructure investment for Hamble Yacht Services, where the site has been steadily undergoing major improvements since being taken over by its current owners early in 2015. “Our hoist operations are core to the services provided by HYS”, reports Bertie Bicket of Hamble Yacht Services. “By ensuring that our facilities are completely up to date we are securing our position as the leading site for the lifting and storage of large and small vessels on the Solent.” A statement on the company’s website said: ‘Hamble Yacht Services is the busiest yard in the country for grand prix racing boats, ocean-going cruisers and legendary classics. Up to 64 vessels can be – and have been – launched in a single day, setting a UK record.’

The hoist dock has the capacity to lift yachts up to 33.5m (110ft) length, 7.3m (24ft) beam and 5.5m (18ft) draft. “The integrity of the new dock’s structure will be of the highest specification,” said Bicket. “The project started right on time and our site tenants, owners and contractors will experience very little disruption.” All major structures and equipment will be brought in from the seaward side by barges rather than by road, and likewise the old frames and metalwork will be removed in the same way. Bicket said: “Our lifting and launching capabilities at HYS will have been completely updated by the spring. Both the hoists are also undergoing a complete servicing and refurbishment over this time.” www.hysgroup.co.uk

MDL MARINAS NEWS

MDL marina manager and Southampton firefighter, Jonathan Walcroft, has been honoured with the Queen’s Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct at Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Celebrating Success event. Firefighters and staff came together for their annual awards evening in December at the police training headquarters in Netley, to honour those who have gone above and beyond, and whose work has played a pivotal role in keeping residents safe. Jonathan, who currently manages Saxon Wharf and Shamrock Quay, has dedicated the last 20 years to the fire service whilst running the local marinas. Whilst working at Hamble Point Marina, Jonathan started out his career as a retained firefighter in 1996 at Hamble

MDL Marinas is exhibiting at the 2017 London Boat Show in January, where they will be showcasing their network of over 100 European marina destinations. This year’s MDL stand will have a fresh design and see the return of the ‘Cleat Challenge’. Those participating will have the chance to win one of three Henri Lloyd jackets by competing for the fastest rope cleating time. Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas, commented: “We look forward to exhibiting once again at London Boat Show on our fantastic new

Fire Station. Jonathan then moved to St Mary’s where he was retained for four years after being promoted to marina manager at MDL Saxon Wharf and Shamrock Quay marinas in Southampton. After two decades of juggling the management of marinas and serving in the Hampshire Fire and Rescue service, Jonathan now prides himself as a Crew Member at Hamble Fire Station and a Fire and Rescue Service Co-Responder. Jonathan said: “The Celebrating Success event was a fantastic evening and it was a delight to be surrounded by so many inspirational people within the Hampshire Fire and Rescue service. It was extremely humbling to be awarded with the Queen’s Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct and I’m honoured that I could share it with my peers.”

stand. The 10-day show always promises to be a great opportunity to meet our berth holders and welcome many new faces to MDL Marinas. 2017 is going to be an exciting year with many plans set to launch and we look forward to kicking off the year in London. Come and meet our friendly staff who will be on hand to help you plan for an exciting season ahead.” Visitors to MDL’s stand will have the opportunity to join MDL’s Cruising Club, giving members the chance to visit any of MDL’s UK marinas and stay every seventh night absolutely free.

ABERYSTWYTH MARINA CAPITAL WORKS COMPLETED A reconfiguration of the layout at Aberystwyth Marina has just been completed. Walcon Marine has carried out extensive works to improve the marina layout. Several new pontoons have been installed and others have been repositioned to upgrade the access and design of the marina. The new layout has increased the overall number of berths available and created a number of larger berths. This is the latest stage of an ongoing development program, designed to improve the infrastructure of the marina, which began when The Marine Group purchased it in September 2015. The marina has also been improved by dredging and upgraded security systems. The Marine Group was awarded a grant from the Coastal Communities Fund to help fund the planned upgrades. The fund aims to encourage the economic development of UK coastal communities by awarding funding to create sustainable economic growth and jobs. Director of operations, Rob Freemantle said: “We are always looking at ways we can improve our service offering and facilities. The new pontoon layout has made a huge impact to improve the access at the marina. By re-

arranging the pontoons it is easier to navigate and allowed for the creation of some much needed larger berths. Walcon Marine has done a superb job in working with us to optimise the space available and to ensure the marina is more user friendly for our berth holders.” Director, Chris Odling-Smee added: “The development of Aberystwyth Marina mirrors the significant program of investment we are rolling out in Cardiff and across the company. “We have made a long-term commitment to improve Aberystwyth Marina and are looking at long-term strategies for continually growing our services, such as our recent purchase of a Water Injection Dredger. This allows us to ensure we are looking to the future and continuing to deliver a first class service to our berth holders.” www.themarinegroup.co.uk

Falmouth Marina’s popular restaurant, The Marine Bar and Restaurant, will be closed from 3 January for a refurbishment. Owner, Toby Skailes who took over the management of the restaurant in June has scheduled this upgrade to happen over the winter period to minimise disruption. The new look restaurant will be unveiled early February ready for the new season. The restaurant will be completely modernised and re-decorated, including the toilets, with a contemporary feel. There will also be a new menu promoting local and seasonal produce from Cornish suppliers. Toby, who also owns Castaways restaurant in Mylor Yacht Harbour said: “We are really excited about the next stage for the Marina Bar. The plans have been in development for a few months now and we are looking forward to offering a fresh new bar and restaurant for the marina and for Falmouth. “I have been amazed by the excitement and enthusiasm of the whole team for the project and cannot wait to put it into practice in January.”

MAPPING MATTERS The latest update to the UK Coastal Atlas of Recreational Boating has been launched and is used by the RYA to help protect important areas to recreational boaters.

THE ss Mastercla

The new version of the UK Coastal Atlas of Recreational Boating

To ensure that recreational boating interests are well represented when the government balances the competing interests of commercial, environmental and leisure sectors around the UK coast, the RYA has produced a powerful tool to help protect areas of importance to recreational boaters. The UK Coastal Atlas of Recreational Boating is a digital mapping tool produced by the RYA on behalf of its members. It shows recreational boating activity around the UK, comprising spatial data including indicators of intensity of use, general boating areas, offshore routes, as well as the locations of clubs, training centres and marinas.

and the distribution of clubs, training centres and marinas. The first dataset was released in 2005, with updates in 2008 and 2012. The newest edition takes a different approach to mapping boating activity, utilising a ‘heat map’ type approach around the coast, based on recreational Automatic Identification System data, indicating a range from light to heavy vessel activity. This is based on tangible passages, with good coverage of our coastal waters, providing an incredibly robust picture of UK cruising activity. This provides a very useful data source for those considering recreational boating activity, such as when mapping proposed offshore developments or areas for conservation. An example of the new dataset

WHY MAP ACTIVITY?

The UK Coastal Atlas of Recreational Boating is regularly used by developers when designing new development proposals, in discussions over navigational safety and is used to inform marine planning processes. The atlas is used by a variety of organisations including government, local authorities, marine licensing authorities and renewable energy developers. It has also been shared with organisations such as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to help improve the safety of recreational boaters at sea.

In fact the RYA has been collecting recreational boating information since 2004 to gain a picture of the areas most utilised for general boating, racing and passage-making in the UK,

The dataset includes the most up-to-date marina locations such as Haslar Marina

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Following a survey of RYA clubs in 2015, where members were asked to indicate where they train and race, general boating areas have also been mapped, providing additional coverage in areas such as estuaries. We recognise that boaters may not carry AIS-transmitting equipment, and that areas without AIS coverage may still be visited by recreational craft. This additional dataset complements the AIS data, ensuring that these areas are also covered.

To advertise here please call Tom on 01489 585 205 or email tombrooks@allatsea.co.uk

Due to bandwidth constraints on the AIS from the type of transponders many recreational boaters use, the AIS data has been limited to 12nm from the coast. To ensure that both boating activity and cruising information further offshore are still represented, route indication points have been provided with approximate directional information as to where passages are expected to carry on past the 12nm limit. The dataset also includes the most up-to-date marina locations, as well as those of the RYA’s current clubs and training centres.

WINTER WARMERS BY PAUL ANTROBUS

Raise your spirits in the thick of winter with a traditionally summertime icon.

Editor Jane Hyde 0746 8609 644 editor@allatsea.co.uk

Ginger wine suffers from the opposite seasonal sales dip to Pimm’s but Crabbies also makes a really good alcoholic ginger beer at four per cent abv. It is mainly for the summer months but is just as good in winter and is available year round at most supermarkets. About £1.80 for a 500ml ‘beer’ bottle size.

Summer and Pimm’s at events like Wimbledon, Cowes Week and Ascot may seem a distant memory, but a warm version using the brandybased Pimm’s No 3 could help you survive a cold winter. Pimm’s No 1 Fruit Cup, to give it its full title, was invented by James Pimm in 1823 as an aid to digestion. It is based on gin infused with fruits and the original secret recipe is still used today, although I cannot see how that can be verified. No matter, it still tastes the same to me as it always has done. Other variations of Pimm’s with vodka, rum, rye and Scotch whiskies fell by the wayside in the course of Pimm’s being taken over by larger drinks companies. However the rebranding of the brandybased version as Pimm’s No 3 Winter in 2005 was a masterstroke. It was partly to alleviate the autumn to spring sales dip of the summer-specific Pimm’s No 1. It

has caught on as a winter warmer, especially when mixed with apple juice plus, if you like, a small measure of Calvados (apple brandy) and heated gently. Like Pimm’s No 1, it is 25 per cent abv and about £15 a 70cl bottle. It makes a great alternative to the perennial mulled wine. The thought of Pimm’s at a club winter party can bring the next sailing season seemingly nearer. Come the London Boat Show days are already lengthening and after a Pimm’s No 3 party guests will leave with a spring in their step.

■ One measure of Pimm’s No 3 Winter ■ Two measures of apple juice (try James White organic. www.jameswhite.co.uk) ■ A cinnamon stick or powdered cinnamon ■ Half a measure of Calvados (optional) ■ In a saucepan, bring the apple juice to simmer heat, add the cinnamon, Pimm’s and Calvados and bring back to gentle simmer – do not let it boil. Serve into mugs or sturdy glasses. Delicious!

Crabbies Green Ginger Wine, on the other hand, is almost a winter staple. At 13.5 per cent abv, it works on its own or as a warmed mixer with Scotch, aka Whisky Mac. Widely stocked at around £6 for a 70cl bottle.

Hepworth’s Old Ale is a Sussex traditional winter brew but bottled for year-round appreciation. Dark and full of roast malt character, at first slightly sweet almost like a barley wine, then a slightly bitter finish of the Admiral hops. It is not too strong at 4.8 percent abv. Gluten free and suitable for vegans, this beer can be served slightly mulled (warm). About £2 for a 500ml bottle at Waitrose.
