Dover after crossing the 24 mile English channel in a record time of 3 hours, 44 minutes and 39 seconds. For sailor and broadcaster Hannah from North London this was simply the first step towards becoming the fastest woman on water. Her next venture is Project Speedbird in which she will be attempting to break the women’s speed record over one nautical mile while also becoming the first woman to ever set that record above the 40 knot barrier (equivalent to 46mph). Hannah’s purpose built boat, Speedbird, has been designed and built by project engineer Dave Chisholm. In order to achieve this record, Project Speedbird will need to bring together both technological and engineering innovation and combine it with Hannah’s grit, determination and physical ability. In order to prepare for this record Hannah is going to huge lengths to get herself in the best possible condition, which has started with learning how to sail the hydrofoiling Moth that the Speedbird design is based on.

fasTneT To fInIsh In PlymouTh FoLLoWING the resounding success of its involvement in the 2011 and 2013 events, Plymouth Yacht Haven has again been selected as the host marina for the finishing yachts in this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race. The biennial event takes competitors across more than 600 miles finishing at Plymouth between the 19 and 21 of August. Marina Manager Laura Whinney said: “There has been an exceptional take up for this year’s race and with entries still coming in, demand for places has been greater than ever. We are looking forward to beating our record in 2013 of providing berthing for 263 of the fleet’s finishers.” Anyone wishing to book a marina berth either before or after the Rolex Fastnet race can visit www.yachthavens.com/plymouth Race preview in All at Sea next month.

A rAce for ALL All At SeA JULY 2015

All AboArd By Jane Hyde

With the excitement of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management round the island race still fresh in our memories we are already feeling the anticipation building for the America’s Cup World Series in Portsmouth followed swiftly in August by Cowes Week and the rolex Fastnet race. As you will see from our cover and the report on this page, the round the island race enjoyed fantastic weather and another classic race. it is wonderful to have a race where sailors of all levels are able to compete against one another. to be able to say you finished ahead of a professional sailor must surely be a huge incentive. For others, though, it is purely the fun and adventure of taking part and that is equally rewarding. on the day, though, it was Giovanni belgrano’s Whooper that scooped the Gold roman bowl. on this occasion experience won the day as this was Giovanni’s second win. As we congratulate the team aboard Whooper on their success our thoughts turn to Sir ben Ainslie and whether his land rover bAr team will also come out on top in Portsmouth later this month. With Sir ben Ainslie’s involvement we can expect huge media coverage. i’ve alredy listened to interviews on tV and radio 2’s breakfast show. incredibly ticket sales are heading in the direction of Glastonbury Festival numbers (in other words more than 100,000). We wish Sir ben and the land rover bAr team the very best of luck and for those of you not heading to Portsmouth we will bring

you all the news next month. in the meantime turn to page 16 for our special preview guide. those of you who are heading to Portsmouth will know there will be a race village, but have you ever wondered about the logistics of setting up huge events like these. After all it is not all about what happens on the water. there is plenty of preparation and entertainment taking place on land too. We were intrigued by the Volvo ocean race and how they managed to set up race villages all around the world and have support ready for the teams whenever and wherever they needed it. So, we asked GAC Pindar, the people behind the Volvo ocean race villages, how they went about setting up an event that takes in 11 ports across five continents. See page 18 to discover how they overcame this unique logistics test. back in the UK and more familiar waters to most of us are the many marinas around the country. Following your requests we have extended our Marina Guide to include more profiles and news. this month kicks off with a look at Salterns Marina and an up-date on Mdl’s fundraising with one Water. Also starting this month is Marina Chat in which we meet the people who use and work at marinas. if you would like to be featured in Marina Chat we would love to hear from you. Whatever your plans for the summer, we hope you have a great one! Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

On 27 June, the day before celebrating her 18th birthday, the inspirational SipPuff sailor natasha Lambert performed the coveted first firing of the gun. That signalled the start of this year’s Round the Island Race in which sailors from beginners to Olympic hopefuls competed for the main prize, the Gold Roman Bowl. The first start, for the biggest and fastest monohulls, including Mike Slade’s multiple record breaking 100ft supermaxi Leopard and the stunning modern classic 160ft schooner Eleonora, got away on schedule at 0700 in a north-westerly breeze of 8 - 12 knots and bright sunshine. Giovanni Belgrano’s 38ft classic yacht Whooper was the eventual winner of the Gold Roman Bowl in the 50 nautical mile race with a corrected time of 07:13:59. It is the second time the Cowes-based sailor has won the race’s most prestigious prize having also been victorious in 2004. Second, just two minutes adrift on corrected time, was another previous overall winner, Ed Donald’s nordic Folkboat Madelaine. Third overall went to Jo Richard’s H-Boat Woof. The MOD70 trimaran Concise 10 took line honours with an elapsed time of 03:30:24. This put her 38 minutes outside the multihull race record set by Sir Ben Ainslie in 2013. Meanwhile conditions could not have been better for the GC32s. The foiling catamarans crossed the line led by Sultanate of Oman and Alinghi, after a close race that saw the boats separated by less than six minutes at the finish. As well as taking the class win, Sultanate of Oman were the second boat in the massive fleet of 1,389 finishers to cross the finish line. Last minute coaching advice from injured skipper Leigh McMillan helped the crew on Sultanate of Oman to take class honours. After breaking his hand on Thursday, McMillan passed helming duties over to Paul Campbell-James (CJ). It was McMillan’s coaching tips that resonated as they were hurtling around the back of the Isle of Wight crashing off waves at 30 knots. CJ said: “Leigh spent some time with us all on Friday and it made a big difference.”

Trimmer Pete Greenhalgh said: “We were crashing off the foils, leaping out of the water doing 25-30 knots and stopping down to 7-8 knots. These are the roughest conditions we have had in these boats and it was one of the roughest rides any of us have ever had. We are all a bit battered and bruised.” With almost unbroken sun and a west south-westerly breeze of 12 - 15 knots, gusting to 20 knots, although the conditions were not ideal for breaking records, results were a great improvement on last year’s slow drift round. This year every one of the 1,389 boats that finished crossed the line before the scheduled 22:00 cut off in order to qualify for a result. As the fourth biggest participatory sporting event in UK thousands of spectators came to watch the racing spectacle unfold. Taking up their positions in Cowes and around the Isle of Wight as well as on the mainland, including at the new Race HUBs at the Royal Southern YC in Hamble and the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, spectators enjoyed fabulous views of the boats as they raced to the finish line. This year, for the first time, fans were able to watch the race live via the RTI TV channel. Live video streaming from Royal Yacht Squadron and Island Sailing club provided extra excitement adding to the fantastic spectacle from viewing points on the island. Competitors could catch up with the video later via the All at Sea website. During the day and well into the night Cowes went into party mode with sailors and spectators enjoying the atmosphere and entertainment. The following day hundreds of delighted competitors, from professional and potential Rio Olympic sailors to first timers, gathered at the Island Sailing Club in Cowes to celebrate another successful J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race in which Paralympic sailing Gold medallist Helena Lucas MBE presented the prizes. Also winners were the many charities that benefit from the huge amounts of money raised by teams. The official race

50nm charity, Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, had already raised £20,000 by the day before the race. So far the Trust has raised over £189,000 through the race. america’s cup world series

In July all eyes in the sailing world will be on Portsmouth as the America’s Cup World Series comes to town with British hopes pinned on 4 times Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie and his team Ben Ainslie Racing.

READ OUR PREVIEW TURN TO PAGE 16

THe America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth is the first stage of competition in the 35th America’s Cup and kicks off this month building up to a dramatic conclusion in 2017 with the America’s Cup (Finals) in Bermuda. The thrilling conclusion to the 34th America’s Cup, which took place on San Francisco bay in 2013, remains fresh in our memories. On that occasion Team Oracle USA, with Sir Ben Ainslie on board, was victorious and they will be defending the trophy in the 35th America’s Cup - without Sir Ben. When Oracle Team USA fought back from the brink to beat Team New Zealand by 44 seconds in the winnertakes-all finale of the last America’s Cup it was described as the greatest sporting comeback. Incredibly the Americans had been trailing 8-1 and the challengers were on match point. The turnaround was dramatic and it all happened once Sir Ben Ainslie came onboard as tactician. The win meant Sir Ben Ainslie was the first Briton in 110 years to be on board a winning America’s Cup boat. A BLAST FROM THE PAST But first a brief history lesson. In order to fully understand the hype surrounding the AC we need to take a step back in time 164 years. The trophy was originally awarded in 1851 by the Royal Yacht Squadron for a race around the Isle of Wight, which was won by the schooner America representing the New York Yacht Club. As the schooner passed the Royal Yacht in first position Queen asked one of her attendants Victoria who was in

The America’s Cup World Series use foiling AC45 catamarans, known as AC45f, a one-designalso wingsail catamaran with foils designed specifically for the America’s Cup World Series by the Oracle Racing engineering team. The AC45 was conceived as a smaller version of the larger AC72 class rule, which was sailed by competitors during the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup and the 34th America’s Cup.

second place. ”Your Majesty, there is no second,” came the reply. That phrase is still the best description of the America’s Cup and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence. The trophy was later donated to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift, which stated that the trophy was to be “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations”. And so the America’s Cup was born - named after the winning schooner America and not the country. WINNING STREAK Since that first race just four nations have won the America’s Cup. In fact it was not until 1983 that the Cup left the States when it was won by the Perth Yacht Club, represented Royal by the yacht Australia II. Their win ended the

SIR BEN WINS AGAIN

Sir Ben Ainslie has been awarded the Magnus Olsson Award. It is given in memory of the Swede ‘Mange’ Olsson who was a popular sailor in the Volvo Ocean Race, taking part in six races. Magnus Olsson was helping to prepare the all-female team SCA (Sam Davies/ GBR) for the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race when he died from a stroke at the age of 64. Shortly after his death, Olsson’s family and some of his closest friends created a memorial fund in his name.

SIGMA 33 AT COWES

Following the success of its 2010 national championship at Cowes Week, the Sigma 33 class association has again chosen the event to run its 2015 national championship. Although racing within Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is not a classic championship format, the interaction with the other classes always creates plenty of interest and challenging racing.

Bart’s Bash is Back BArT’s Bash, the global sailing event in aid of the Andrew simpson sailing Foundation, has launched participant sign up with the help of some of the world’s best known names in the sport of sailing. sailors including sir robin- Knox-Johnston, sir Ben Ainslie and shirley robertson oBE feature in a short film to encourage sailors and non-sailors to take to the water on 20 september. Watch the video here: http://bit.ly/ bartsbashvideo When Bart’s Bash was conceived in 2014 as a participation event in memory of Andrew ‘Bart’ simpson no one expected over 30,700 people to take part across more than 50 countries. in January 2015 Bart’s Bash was even named as officially the largest sailing race in the world by Guinness World records. The aim of the 2015 campaign is to increase participation even further across the world with the ultimate goal of becoming the world’s biggest sporting event. Any sailing clubs, community sailing programmes, sail training centres, yacht clubs, scout groups, sea cadets and even groups of sailors globally can hold a Bart’s Bash race. This year the team have introduced Bart’s Buddies to the event. This is a great opportunity for those who already sail to encourage others into boating.

Natasha triumphs

Another exciting new concept added by the team is the Bart’s Bash Buoy race. This is possibly the easiest way to get lots of people on the water and involved in the event, without the need for a set start time, start line, complex course and the full racing management. Venues can run a simple ‘race’ from the shore to a mark (Bart’s Buoy) and back to shore. Let us know if you have an event planned. www.bartsbash.com

Time to save the QE2 ThErE are reports that the QE2, which was built on the Clyde and fitted out in Greenock, is languishing in a dock in Dubai and could be up for sale. According to a report in The Telegraph, it was only once the engines were turned off in 2013 that she fell into disrepair and is suffering in the hot and humid conditions. There had been plans to turn the ship into a luxury hotel, but the economic downturn stopped plans. inverclyde Council’s Leader, Councillor stephen McCabe, is calling for national support to investigate bringing the QE2 home to the Clyde and Greenock. Councillor stephen McCabe, said: “The QE2 is an important piece

Tracy Crouch MP, Minister for sport and Tourism, congratulated the former royal Fleet Auxiliary officer at the houses of Parliament and said: “Congratulations to Peter Thornton on his selection as the skipper of the GrEAT Britain team in the Clipper 2015-16 race. i wish the whole team the very best of luck as they represent and showcase our great country in every corner of the world in this unique sporting challenge. i look forward to celebrating what will be an enormous achievement on their return.” The GrEAT Britain yacht is the second consecutive entry in the Clipper race following a highly successful campaign in 2013-14 with an impressive second place finish out of the twelve strong fleet of identical 70foot ocean racing yachts. The Clipper round the World Yacht race is known as one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet and is uniquely for amateur sailors. More than 670 crew will take part from the UK with over 40 different nationalities represented. The race was established by legendary UK yachtsman sir robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo, non-stop, around the world. he wanted to allow anyone, regardless of previous sailing history, the chance to experience the exhilaration of ocean racing; 40 per cent of crew have no previous sailing experience when they sign up with full training provided ahead of the race. Crew can choose to complete the entire circumnavigation or individual legs. Twelve teams will compete in the Clipper 2015-16 race. it departs from London on 30 August and returns almost a year later after racing more than 40,000 miles around the world in eight challenging legs between six continents.

of maritime history for the Clyde and Greenock. To see this once magnificent flagship of the Cunard line languishing in a dock in Dubai is simply heart-breaking. “Given the reception just a few short weeks ago to the Queen Mary 2 on the 175th anniversary of Cunard on the Clyde, it is clear that the QE2 could be a major draw for visitors.

“it could also boost the promotion of the Clyde and inverclyde’s proud maritime history to a national and, potentially, international audience. “Bringing the QE2 home is a herculean task, but it is one that requires national support in scotland and perhaps across the UK. officers will make contact with the Dubai Government to find out the exact position, to find out if the reports on her condition are accurate and if she is actually for sale.”

nATAshA Lambert is the inspiring teenager who last year sailed from Cowes around the south coast of England and across to Wales before climbing Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in south Wales. in doing so she raised thousands of pounds for charity. This would be a great achievement for any teenager, but is made all the more extraordinary considering natasha has cerebral palsy. she has little control over her movements and sails her adapted yacht by breathing through a straw which controls an electronic system designed by her father, Gary. in her latest challenge natasha sailed over 200 miles along the south coast of England and up the river Thames in her specially adapted 21ft yacht, Miss isle Too, before switching to a special walker to undertake a fund raising walk around the City of London. natasha was raising funds for her new charity – the Miss isle school of sip and Puff sailing. The charity will give others with a similar disability the chance to enjoy sailing by ‘sip and puff’, using only their breath to control a sailing boat. natasha is well known in the sailing world and was invited to carry out a special task at one of the UK’s largest sailing events. on the 27 June, the day before celebrating her 18th birthday, natasha performed the coveted first firing of the gun that signals the start of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management round the island race. in recognition of her incredible achievements natasha has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. www.missisle.org.uk

Fond farewell to Figaro

The Solitaire du Figaro – eric Bompard fleet departed Torbay in spectacular style after a successful five days of sailing and celebrations. Docking out from Torquay harbour, the 39 skippers made their way out to the start line waving goodbye to the local crowds lining haldon Pier. British skipper Alan Roberts, 9th into Torbay, led the charge from the off, steaming over the starting line down to the first mark at Corbyn head – challenged by Leg 3 winner and overall leader Yann elies. Southwest sailors Sam Matson (exmouth) and Rookie Robin elsey (Truro) also had a solid start, both skippers pushing into the top ten around the first mark. But in the end it was French skipper Vincent Biarnes who took charge, leading the fleet around the first set of marks in Tor Bay and offshore around Berry head.

The turn out for the start of Leg 4 was the perfect end to a great week in Torbay for the Solitaire du Figaro fleet, chased around the bay by a flotilla of supporters on RIBS, speedboats and yachts – as well as hundreds of people watching on shore. Sailing on a shortened 400nm course from Torbay to Dieppe via Lands end, the Solitaire du Figaro finished in France on 25 June. Alan Roberts became the top British Solitaire du Figaro – eric Bompard finisher in 40 years. Concluding the four stage solo race in Dieppe ninth overall, Alan Roberts beat Sam Goodchild’s historic overall result – 11th in 2013 – by two places and now sits second only to Claire Francis, who finished the race 5th in 1975. Alan completed the 1,661 mile race seven hours, 12 minutes and 21 seconds behind overall winner Xavier Macaire.

When UKSA were unveiled as the official charity of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week last year they pledged to help all-comers get involved in the regatta and use the monies raised to give all year six pupils (10 and 11 years old) on the Isle of Wight the opportunity to get out on the water. Through UKSA’s sailing programme students are able to gain confidence and self-belief to make this transition from primary to secondary school as smooth

as possible. Over the last seven months over 1,123 year six pupils have taken to the water. For this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week the charity’s focus will be to fundraise £100,000 to provide transformational opportunities for 100 young people from diverse backgrounds through their youth development programmes. http://uksa.org/aberdeen-assetmanagement-cowes-week-charity

BRITISH SUCCESSES AT ISAF WORLD CUP THE British Sailing Team’s total tally at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Weymouth and Portland, including the Paralympic classes, was five gold, three silver and three bronze medals. Although Giles Scott’s winning streak now extends to 18 months in the heavyweight Finn event, he’s not prepared to take his foot off the gas with just over a year to go until Rio 2016. “Everyone’s getting better all the time, and there’s still a long time to go to the Games so I certainly can’t rest on my laurels at all.” 470 women’s duo Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark turned the tables on their New Zealand rivals Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie – the London 2012 gold medallists – in another gripping medal

race to win gold. Nick Dempsey secured the golden hat-trick for the home team, beating his younger rival Tom Squires to gold in the RS:X men’s windsurfing event. Bryony Shaw won the RS:X women’s medal race to claim overall silver, but an otherwise fantastic week for Izzy Hamilton, who went into the day leading, ended in disappointment after she sailed the wrong course at the final turning mark and had to retire from the race. She finished fourth. John Pink and Stuart Bithell scooped a bronze in the 49er class. “We’ve had a great World Cup regatta, and it is great to see the event continue to innovate and move forward,” said RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park. #EveryRoadtoRio

DISABLED and disadvantaged people in the Solent region could soon be taking control of their own specially adapted powerboat, based at the Royal Southern Yacht Club. National powerboating charity Wetwheels has launched its fundraising campaign to bring one of its purposebuilt, fully-accessible vessels to the region. The charity already operates a boat in Portsmouth and another in Jersey. Yachtsman and former All at Sea columnist Geoff Holt MBE set the charity up three years ago and explained why there is a need for a new boat on the Hamble river: “As a disabled person myself, I know the pleasure, fun and sense of freedom

I feel when I am on the water. I set up Wetwheels so other disabled people of all ages could also share those experiences. Of all the people who come on Wetwheels, about 60 per cent tell us they have never been on the water before because the opportunity has not previously existed. What makes Wetwheels extra-special is that everyone who comes on the boat has the opportunity to drive the boat, wheelchair users included.” The Campaign has already raised nearly £70,000 in cash and products towards its £155,000 target required to buy the new boat. NEWS IN BRIEF

GIPSY MOTH CHARTER

RIO TEST EVENT TEAM Trials for foiling keel boat DYNAMIC Stability System has unveiled the Quant23 which, after its first preliminary sea trials in Cowes, has proved itself to be one of its first – if not the first – fully foiling keel boat. Designer Hugh Welbourn has spent more than 10 years developing the patented DSS, which comprises a retractable hydrofoil that is deployed to leeward on a yacht. The foil provides vertical lift to leeward, improving the yacht’s righting moment, an effect similar to having extra crew on the weather rail or a bigger keel bulb, and in turn dramatically increases performance. However the very latest DSS foils not only provide righting moment, but extra

Historic yacht Gipsy Moth IV will be attending the Festival Des Voiles de Travail in Granville, France between 18 - 25 August. The yacht will be taking part in the festival’s Parade of Sails every day, as well as welcoming visitors on board. Four berths are available to charter on both the outward and return journeys.

NEW MARINA MANAGER Yacht Havens has appointmented Steve Kitchen as the new Marina Manager at Plymouth Yacht Haven. As a keen sailor and Plymouth Yacht Haven berth holder, Steve has a very good understanding from first-hand experience of what is expected of a Five Gold Anchor marina. Steve said: “Working together with a great team, my goal is to ensure the marina continues to offer berth holders and visitors the very best in customer service.” www.yachthavens.com/plymouth

JERSEY PROJECT COMPLETE

A £3 million project to deliver much needed improvement to visitors’ berths and holding pontoons in the busy St. Helier Harbour in Jersey is now finished. More than 20,000 yachtsman visit St. Helier each year and this development will offer a significant enhancement of facilities for all harbour users.

WITH just over a year to go until the Rio 2016 Games, the British Sailing Team has announced selected team members for the Olympic Test Event to be held this summer on Guanabara Bay. The Aquece Rio International Regatta (15 - 22 August) is the second official Test Event for the sport of sailing and will see 15 British sailors compete against their international rivals across ten Olympic classes in what is a key dress rehearsal at the 2016 venue. With just one boat per nation, per class permitted to enter, the regatta replicates Olympic-style racing at the Games venue, and is a crucial opportunity to expand the

vertical lift beneath the boat too which, in combination with a T-foil rudder, enables the Quant23 to sail fully airborne. QuantBoats’ Michael Aeppli said: “With the Quant23 the aim was not to create the world’s fastest foiler, but one of the easiest crafts to fly steadily, providing fun, fast rides in a wide range of conditions. For us this means that the boat shall do 90 per cent of the work and not the crew – mostly this seems to be the other way round with many of the other foiling boats of today, with complicated systems to manage, understand and maintain all the time.” The first Quant23 is a prototype to be used for R&D prior to the boat going into full production.

Admiral’s review

HIS Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, as Admiral of the Royal Yacht Squadron, was joined by other members of the British Royal Family and European Royal families to conduct a Review of 180 yachts belonging to members of the Royal Yacht Squadron, off Cowes, Isle of Wight. The event was held to commemorate the bicentenary of the historic club which was inaugurated on 1 June 1815 at the Club’s first meeting in St James’s, London. In excess of 180 private sailing and motor boats of all sizes belonging to Royal Yacht Squadron members provided a wonderful display from the smallest RIB to sailing superyachts and the two royal yachts: from Norway the Norge and from Denmark the Dannebrog. The Duke of Edinburgh was joined during the day by other members of the British Royal Family including HRH The Princess Royal, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

THE Royal Southern Yacht Club welcomed its Patron, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, for the Commissioning ceremony of the newly completed Prince Philip Yacht Haven. Three years ago, His Royal Highness lent his name to this project to transform the Club’s waterfront and having been shown the plans on his last visit, was viewing the completed development for the first time. The 8-month building project has included the construction of a new quay wall, a capital dredge to give full tidal access, a new slipway and re-positioning pontoons to create enhanced berthing facilities for members and visitors. The Haven includes a much needed disabled persons access,

an ecologically sound ‘living wall’ for invertebrates and, overall, the development will provide added flood protection to the village of Hamble. www.royal-southern.co.uk

The Fleet Review was part of a programme of celebrations by the Royal Yacht Squadron both on and off the water taking place during 2015. The Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron, Christopher Sharples, accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh during the day. He said: “His Royal Highness clearly enjoyed himself enormously. As a keen sailor himself and past Commodore he retains a strong affinity with the Squadron which he demonstrated yesterday by his enthusiastic support of our bicentenary.”

VOlVO OCeAN RACe WINNeRS

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing arrived in Gothenburg as the winners of the 2014-15 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. Image: Ian Roman / Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing

After team Brunel (Bouwe Bekking/NeD) completed a triumphant Leg 7 to bolster their hopes of finishing with a podium place in the Volvo Ocean race the final two stages, to Lorient and then Gothenburg via a pit-stop in the Hague, were once again be contested by seven boats. team Vestas Wind (Chris Nicholson/AUS) was able to rejoin the fleet for the first time since November when their boat was grounded on a reef in the Indian Ocean. following a four-month rebuild in the Persico boatyard in Italy, the boat was transported by

sea and road to Lisbon before its competitive comeback on 6 June in the Lisbon In-Port race. Leg 8 to Lorient, a relative sprint at 647nm, began a day later. Skipper Sam Davies (GBr) and her team SCA crew achieved a resounding triumph for women’s offshore sailing when they clinched Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean race. At least as satisfying for the first all-women’s crew to enter the race in 12 years was the opportunity to silence critics who suggested that they were looking outclassed by their experienced male rivals.

PRICE S HEL D 2ND

With the huge following that Sam Davies’s team attracted and their legacy of leg-by-leg improvements, we surely will not have to wait another 12 years for a female crew to take their place in a Volvo Ocean race fleet. that dramatic win was followed by team Alvimedica’s Leg 9 victory in Gothenburg, which also meant six out of seven boats had won a stage of the 9 month race. Only team Vestas Wind did not post a leg win after missing five legs of the race. the race concluded on June 27 with the In-Port race in Gothenburg after 38,739nm of sailing, visiting 11 ports and every continent. the 12th edition also saw some of the closest racing ever witnessed in the 41-year-old offshore marathon. Despite finishing the final leg in fifth place, Ian Walker’s Abu Dhabi Ocean racing claimed the overall trophy making Walker the first British skipper to do so. Tough bags

Boaters are always on the look out for good quality kit bags for their gear and here is a new range that might well fit the bill. These new tough Weatherproof Bags from Ronstan have been created with the sailor in mind. They have weather resistant pockets and compartments and are made from a highly durable PVC coated waterproof material. The range includes three different models including two sizes of backpack style bags and a high capacity Crew Bag for longer outings.

Clean up time

Everyone likes a clean hull – fouling looks unsightly, makes the boat less efficient through the water and can even host unwanted hitch hikers, otherwise known as invasive non-native species. These are a major threat to our native species as well as causing damage to infrastructure, equipment and other sectors such as aquaculture. Once established they spread around the UK on the hulls, chains and equipment of smaller craft including recreational boats. If you haven’t used your boat for a while and fouling

is building up, it is better to scrub it off in situ before you venture further afield. To see how quick and easy this can be Haslar Marina has teamed up once again with The Green Blue and has a Brizo Hull Mate available for berth holders to use, just ask at the marina office if you would like to try it out. The Brizo Hull Mate is a rollerpad on a telescopic pole made from marine-grade stainless steel. PREVIEW

america’s cup world series

In July all eyes in the sailing world will be on Portsmouth as the America’s Cup World Series comes to town with British hopes pinned on 4 times Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie and his team Ben Ainslie Racing.

As the schooner passed the Royal Yacht in first position Queen Victoria asked one of her attendants who was in

The America’s Cup World Series use foiling AC45 catamarans, also known as AC45f, a one-design wingsail catamaran with foils designed specifically for the America’s Cup World Series by the Oracle Racing engineering team. The AC45 was conceived as a smaller version of the larger AC72 class rule, which was sailed by competitors during the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup and the 34th America’s Cup.

In fact it was not until 1983 that the Cup left the States when it was won by the Royal Perth Yacht Club, represented by the yacht Australia II. Their win ended the

longest winning streak in the history of sport. Until 1967 only one challenger was allowed, but since 1970 there has been a selection series with the winner becoming the official challenger and competing against the defender in the America’s Cup match. Featuring all the America’s Cup teams racing in foiling, one-design AC45 catamarans, the World Series is the opportunity to put points on the board that carry forward into the next stage of the competition. Points collected in the World Series in 2015 and 2016 will count towards the America’s Cup Challenger Series to be held in 2017, to determine a challenger for the America’s Cup. This team will go on to compete against current defender, Team Oracle USA, in the America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017. AMERICA’S CUP PORTSMOUTH This July Portsmouth welcomes the America’s Cup World Series with 4 days of on the water action combined with family entertainment. There will be a Waterfront Festival and Fanzone Arenas. The race village will open on 23 July with practice racing beginning on 24 July. All competing teams will be out testing the waters and familiarising themselves with the race course. Racing will take place next to Portsmouth’s extensive shore line, promising great views for the fans. 25 July and 26 July will both be race days culminating in the ‘Super

WATCHING THE ACTION The area of water racing will take place in is close to shore but is within a commercial shipping channel and an area managed by the Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth. An exclusion zone will be created around the race course. The race course and racing buoys will be laid on each day of racing and the final layout of the course will depend on wind and weather conditions. Recommended viewing zones for spectator boats have been designated by the Queen’s Harbour Master. There will be two clear areas for spectator viewing on water – one for smaller boats less than 7m LOA and one main spectator channel. However organisers recommend that one of the best views of the action will be from the main race village areas on Southsea Common where spectators will have a close-up view of the racing as well as the benefit of large screens, live coverage and commentary, onboard footage and audio.

BRITISH SAILING TEAM FOLLOWING THE BRITISH TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO

Rio here I come! In this month’s British Sailing Team column, Paralympic gold medallist Helena Lucas reflects on an exciting milestone, being selected as the first British athlete on the team sheet for Rio 2016.

It has been a whirlwind time, but it is a huge honour and relief to know that I am now officially selected for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and will have the opportunity to defend my gold medal there. It is quite strange in a way to think that I am the first British athlete from any sport to be on the team sheet for either the 2016 Olympic or Paralympic Games. Especially when for 2012 I would have been among the last to be named. FOCUS ON RIO But it is a great position to be in and this early selection means that we can really focus on preparing for Rio. this includes learning the specifics of the venue instead of focussing on trying to win a trials process, which I have to say has been very tough. Megan Pascoe, my teammate and main rival in the 2.4mR, is a very talented sailor and she has pushed me all the way in the

four trial events that we had. Early selection also allows her to try out in one of the other Paralympic classes with a view to still gaining Rio qualification. Selection day itself, which also coincided with my birthday was pretty full-on with a really early start and a full morning of interviews in London. But it was great to see so much media interest, which is testament to how much London 2012 captured people’s attention for Paralympic sport in Great Britain. TITLE DEFENSE the London Paralympics was an amazing experience, being a home Games and, of course, for me winning gold. So many people have asked me how it could ever get any better than that. It is pretty hard to beat that for sure, and I think a lot of people were surprised that I made the decision to carry on campaigning for Rio.

But the goal and the drive behind carrying on is the fact that no one else in Paralympic sailing has ever managed to defend their title. It would be amazing to be the first sailor to be able to do that. that is the drive and the goal for 2016. At the same time we still hope that the slim chance of sailing being reinstated for the Paralympics in 2020 comes to life so that the talent we have has a chance to shine and inspire new people into the sport for future Games. It may be a slim chance for tokyo, but in sailing you never say never until you have crossed the finish line – you just don’t know when that next wind shift will come. special report

Secret scenes behind racing Report: GAC Pindar & Jane Hyde

The 2014 - 2015 Volvo Ocean Race has finished, but have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes to make these huge international events possible? Here we look at the GAC Pindar Volvo Ocean Race logistics challenge. GAC Pindar delivers Team Vestas to Persico Boatyard from Genoa._ Image: Brian Carlin

For most of us, the race story starts on the day an event begins. However for all those working behind the scenes there will have been many months of intense planning. For GAC Pindar the organisational work for the Volvo ocean race started over a year before the race began in october 2014. The team travelled over 30,000 miles to recce each of the host ports to understand the specific challenges presented by each location. GAC Pindar’s main roles included customs clearance for race villages and the logistics of setting up the race villages around the world. You might think there is 1 race village that is moved around the world. However due to the sheer size of the race - 38,739nm across 5 continents and 11 ports, including a pit-stop in The Hague, in just 9 months - two identical race villages were required. They then leapfrogged each other across the globe. Nick Bice, Head of Boatyard, Volvo ocean race said: “GAC Pindar is crucial to the smooth running of the whole Volvo ocean race operation. Not only will their role ensure that each of the race villages are in place by the deadline but they will also be instrumental in making sure the race runs smoothly.”

times between race villages sped up dramatically due to the proximity of the stopovers in Europe (Lisbon, Lorient and Gothenburg). To add to the pressure there was no room for manoeuvre on timings. once the race started the dates were set in stone for each race village – so even the smallest delays could derail the entire operation. This was a massive global team effort, with local GAC offices occasionally working with approved partners to ensure the smooth execution of race village delivery (Bump in), set up and deconstruction and subsequent onward travel (Bump out), with GAC team members moving around the globe.

DONGFENG MAST BREAKAGE

In incredibly tough events like the Volvo ocean race it is inevitable that boats will require repairs and maintenance both during the race legs and at port stopovers. With a race that covers so much of the globe it is not always easy to have the

DID YOU KNOW? Volvo Ocean Race has a significant economic impact on the stopover destinations. So GAC Pindar had $2,500,000 of spare boat parts stored at different locations: Auckland, Dubai and rotterdam. When the mast on the Volvo ocean 65 ‘Dongfeng’ boat snapped over 2,000nm from the next port stopover in Itajaί,

BUMP IN, BUMP OUT

For the first 6 stopovers of the race (Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, Itajai and Newport) there was an average 14 days to get everything set up and ready on site from when the cargo arrived. As if that was not tight enough, after the Newport stopover, the lead

Planning for the Volvo Ocean Race was a massive global team effort Image: TNL GAC Pindar

The Abu Dhabi Race Village. Image: A.Sanchez

Brazil, organisers called upon GAC Pindar to put together an emergency plan to ensure that Dongfeng race Team had everything required to re-join the race at the start of the sixth leg to Newport, USA, just 20 days later. Three cutting-edge carbon fibre masts worth $345,000 had been stored across the globe for exactly this type of situation. With time of the essence the mast stored in Dubai was selected to travel to Brazil on specially designed Boeing 747 cargo planes. The 28.6m, 500kg mast was flown from Dubai to Amsterdam and then loaded onto a second plane for the flight to Sao Paulo, Brazil the next day. Beth King, operations Manager, GAC Pindar said: “once the mast touched down in Brazil we were still over 500 miles away from our final destination. There was a real possibility that Brazilian customs would hold up our operation as they are closed over the weekend. “But our good relationships, developed over the last 12 months planning for the arrival of the Volvo ocean race, ensured special clearance and the mast was quickly loaded onto an over-sized truck for the final leg of its trip. “The journey, across several mountainous regions, took place during daylight hours due to local travel restrictions and was completed in just two days, a full week before the leg start.”

BACK IN THE RACE

Sometimes, though, even the best teams can face potential disaster as Team Vestas Wind found out to their cost on 29 November. They miscalculated their route and sailed head on into a shallow reef in the Cargados Carajos Shoals, Mauritius. The Team Vestas Wind boat rudders were destroyed while the stern began taking in large amounts of water. remarkably the nine members on board came out from the crash unscathed. They were shocked, cold, wet and without a boat, but thankfully uninjured. That set in motion a monumental recovery operation involving multiple parties that led to the Team Vestas Wind boat being successfully rebuilt in time to re-join the race in Lisbon for the in-port race on 6 June – a feat that many expert observers thought to be impossible. GAC Pindar redirected the various Team Vestas workshop containers that follow the team around the world to Genoa – where the boat would be sent for repair. This was followed by the transport of salvaged boat materials from the reef to Genoa. once the stricken boat arrived in Genoa, GAC took care of customs clearance for

the vessel and passed it onto Persico – the company in charge of repairs. GAC Pindar Technical Manager ollie Smith was present on the ground in Genoa to oversee the smooth running of this process. GAC Pindar also had to move the new mast for the repaired boat from the manufacturers – Southern Spars in New Zealand - and transport it to Lisbon, ensuring it was there on time for the arrival of the repaired boat.

ALL OVER NOW

Tom Touber, Volvo ocean race, Chief operating officer commented: “We’d like to thank the team at GAC Pindar. As our race is life at the extreme we are always confronted with the unexpected. In those circumstances it is vital to have a logistical partner that is not only able to stick to their promise, but also able to change the promise swiftly and deliver the new one. ” By the end of the race in June GAC Pindar employees, including 11 permanent staff, had worked over 21,000 man-hours to complete this unique logistics test. The winners of the 2014 - 2015 Volvo ocean race? You will have to turn to page 12 to read our report. www.volvooceanrace.com www.gacpindar.com CAPE TOWN BUMP IN Space was an issue in Cape Town. The race village was positioned in a unique location across three piers so there was only room for one delivery truck or crane at a time. GAC Pindar was also restricted by noise regulations between 8pm and 8am so that key build activity could only take place during the day. To tackle all of this GAC Pindar drafted a ‘Smart Sheet’ document (standard across all VOR ports), the logistics bible for the whole operation. SANYA TO ITAJAI BUMP IN Richard Mallen, Project Director GAC explained: “The route from China to Brazil wasn’t a straightforward one. We organised for the 112 containers carrying the race village to be shipped from Sanya to Vietnam and then onto Malaysia where they were loaded onto a container ship that reached Itajaί on 24 March. In addition 16 custom made hard shell containers (AKN) were air freighted bringing crew kit, media equipment and two Volvo life size scale model cars were flown into São Paulo and then trucked 500 miles to Itaja.”

COWES WEEK Aberdeen Asset Management

In an incredible summer of boating around UK waters there is more to come including one of the biggest of them all - Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.

COWES Week is another major UK sailing event that can boast an incredible heritage. Running since 1826, it is one of the UK’s longest running sporting events and remains one of the most popular. A staggering 100,000 people will come to watch the sailing and enjoy the entertainment and amazing atmosphere that is Cowes Week. Staging up to 40 races each day with around 1,000 boats taking part, Cowes Week is the largest sailing regatta of its kind worldwide. Imagine

8,500 sailors taking part with backgrounds ranging from the Olympics to weekend sailing and you get an idea of the scale and diversity of the event. ENTERING THE REGATTA Before entering one of the handicap classes (IRC for larger monohulls, MOCRA for multihulls or ISCRS for cruising boats) boats will need an upto-date rating. You can, however, enter

before your rating is sorted out. All entrants or their representatives must register in person at the Regatta Centre before the end of their protest time limit on the day of their first race. The Centre is also the information hub for all racing questions. There is a briefing before the regatta. Taking place on the Friday evening before it starts, while not compulsory, attendance by one or two sailors from each boat is recommended. Given the number of competitors involved it is not surprising that the Sailing Instructions for Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week are generally more complex than other regattas. The advice is to read them thoroughly! For example, every year

often on the look-out for additional crew members. Alternatively there are chartering options available to sailors. Details about both can be found on the Cowes Week website.

many boats are penalised after going through restricted areas that are highlighted in the Sailing Instructions. Full instructions for those taking part can be found at the regatta’s website. Wind Directions

Eye popping fact

When you are out on the water you will need to learn where the wind is coming from. This is called wind direction.

Want to join the RYA? Special memberships designed exclusively for younger members. Junior – As an RYA Junior member (up to 11 years old) you will receive a welcome pack containing an activity book on joining. You will be sent a quarterly newsletter from ‘Bob the Buoy’ crammed full of stories and quizzes, facts and pictures. You also have your own dedicated Junior Members area on the RYA website where you will find the latest news, gallery, your stories, games and lots more. Youth – Designed for young people between 12 and 17 years of age. When you join you will receive a welcome pack containing the RYA Youth Notebook which is crammed full of useful information, a personal log to record your boating activities, contacts, events and much more. You will also receive an exclusive Youth member e-newsletter four times a year and have access to a dedicated Youth area on the RYA website.

The wind direction is shown by which point of the compass the wind is blowing from. For example a south wind blows from the south, not to the south.

Can you add the right label to the right arrow? see page 38 for the answers! The giant squid, Architeuthis dux, has the largest eyes of any animal on Earth. They are up to about 30cm across – the size of a dinner plate!

Know your knots… Sheet Bend The Sheet Bend can be used to join two ropes that are of slightly different thickness. But be cautious – this is one of those knots that unless it is under load can come undone very easily, which is probably why it is not used to secure sheets to sails.

Find out more at www.rya.org.uk and click on join and renew, Youth Members Area or Junior Members Area.

Make a closed bight in the end of the thicker line (see the loop of the blue line in picture one). Pass the smaller line from the back to front, up through the bight of the thicker line. Pass the smaller line behind both parts of the thick line, in the direction shown in picture 2 (under the shorter end first).

Now bring the end of the smaller line across the front of the closed bight tucking it under itself on top of the bight as shown in picture 3 and finish by pulling tight. Top tip – make sure that both working ends come out from the knot on the same side, otherwise the knot will be unstable

MINI MASTER CLASS

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

FLAG ETIQUETTE

Flag etiquette is a combination of law, good manners and tradition. Here are just a few points to consider. IT is a legal requirement for a UK flagged vessel to wear her ensign when entering or leaving a foreign port and on demand as required by the Merchant Shipping Act. It is recommended that it is worn all times in daylight, especially when near to or in sight of land or another vessel.

SPECIAL OR PRIVILEGED ENSIGNS In addition to the Red Ensign, there is a White Ensign, a Blue Ensign and there are a number of Red Ensigns with a badge, Blue Ensigns with a badge and a light blue Ensign with a badge. These additional Ensigns are special or privileged Ensigns and may only be worn with permission, which is granted ultimately by the Queen. A warrant grants this permission and the Ensign must be worn in accordance with the warrant, which will in most cases require the corresponding burgee to be displayed. In most cases the warrant is granted to a yacht club, which in turns gives its members permission to wear the Ensign under the conditions of the warrant, by issuing the members with a permit.

WHAT TO PUT WHERE Ensign - The Ensign is worn as close to the stern of the vessel as possible, the most senior position for a flag. A UK registered vessel should wear the national maritime flag, the Red Ensign, unless entitled to wear a special or privileged Ensign. Burgee - The burgee takes the next most senior position on the vessel, which is the main masthead. Only one burgee may be flown on the vessel. It is now also common practice to fly the burgee at the starboard spreaders. However, no other flag may be flown above the burgee on the same halyard. Motorboats without a mast can fly the burgee from a staff on the bow or over the bridge/wheelhouse.

Special Ensign - A special or privileged Ensign must be worn in accordance with the warrant and permit governing its use and if required by the warrant and permit should never be worn without its corresponding burgee. Courtesy Flag and Q Flag - The starboard spreaders are used for signalling. This is where both a national courtesy flag and the Q flag should be flown. You should not fly any other flag above a national courtesy flag on the same halyard. Note, if you decide to fly your burgee at the starboard spreaders, rather than the masthead and are sailing in the territorial waters of another country you have a dilemma. However you choose to solve this, unless you fly your burgee at the top of the mast you will be contravening one or another element of flag etiquette. House Flags - House flags are flown from the port spreaders. A house flag may indicate membership of an association

(i.e. the RYA House Flag) or society. It may also be to indicate membership of another club, if the burgee of a more senior club is already being flown. More than one house flag may be flown on the port halyard, but with caution that they are flown in order of seniority.

LAND FLAGS The Union flag, Welsh Dragon and the Crosses of St Andrew, St George and St Patrick are primarily land flags and should not be flown at sea by cruising yachtsmen. At sea the cross of St George is the flag of an Admiral and it should therefore not be flown by anyone else, without special dispensation. A vessel flying the St Andrew’s Cross could be mistaken as saying “my vessel is

stopped and making no way through the water” as this is the meaning of code flag M which has the same design. The St Patrick’s Cross could be misinterpreted as code flag V “I require assistance”.

SIZING YOUR FLAGS The sizes and condition of flags are important. They should not be tatty and should not hang in the water, but should still be large enough to be seen. The best advice is ‘what looks right’ but a rough guide can be found on the RYA website www.rya.org.uk/go/flags. Being ill-informed of your obligations could lead you to cause insult at home or abroad by giving a signal you do not intend to give or could lead you to a fine for breaking the law. Only with the right flag, correctly positioned, can you be sure that you are giving the correct message and that any signal you are giving is clear. Spread the word about flag etiquette and encourage good practice!

RYA FOCUS BY EMMA SLATER

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft. If the power of the sea captivates you, getting into big boat racing whether inshore or offshore, can provide the answer

Getting into racing Often racing is a major reason people develop a lifelong passion for sailing and windsurfing. With many major races taking pace over the next couple of months here is the RYA’s guide to the world racing.

Clubs love to welcome new people to racing and learning the skills required has never been easier

IT is hard to imagine the first time you step on to any boat or board that you will get bitten by the racing bug. Indeed, just seeing others take their place on a start line for the first time can be, at best, a bit intimidating and at worst positively off-putting. But whether a newcomer wanting to learn more and develop their skills or a cruiser who fancies a different type of challenge, thousands of people start racing every year. But how? It all depends on the type of racing you want to do.

handicap fleet for boats outside those classes too. Clubs want you to race so the vast majority, if not all, will provide opportunities really early in your sailing to crew for experienced club members and experience what racing is about. The theory? You learn more quickly by doing, and it is not just racing skills that will develop through racing but your all round sailing ability. Once you start participating in club racing and find your favoured class(es) -experienced club sailors are a great

source of advice on this - you might want to test yourself outside of your club. All racing clubs host Open meetings for a particular class(es) throughout the season, while many class associations run Traveller series as well as National and other annual championships. Stay as local or travel as much as you want, and if you start getting pretty good, or just want an excuse to combine racing with an overseas trip, you can enter your class Europeans and Worlds too. For young sailors who show talent, potential

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

People who learn to sail dinghies, multihulls and small keelboats commonly do so either informally or through RYA Learn to Sail courses at sailing clubs and watersports centres. Clubs are increasingly geared to trying to keep people involved long-term, which is brilliant for newcomers as it has never been easier to have your hand held through learning to race. Some clubs, if RYA Training Centres, run formal RYA Start and Go Racing courses as part of a clear pathway from their RYA Level 1 and 2 (adults) and Stage 1-4 (youth) Learn to Sail courses. These teach the basics of getting off the start line and round a course, improving technique and knowledge for club level racing including rules. They ultimately develop skills in preparation for open meets and higher competition. However, even clubs that do not run formal racing qualifications will actively encourage you to start racing. Most clubs have racing multiple times a week, with many continuing in the winter. All clubs have ‘fleets’, or classes of boat, raced at that club. Most have a

Although windsurfing clubs are not as common as sailing clubs there are still many opportunities to take up this exciting sport

and commitment in racing there is the opportunity to start following a pathway towards Olympic Classes sailing as part of the RYA’s World Class Performance Programme. This includes regional Zone squads, class National Junior squads (typically U16) and class National Youth squads (U19) before a sailor decides if they want to make the transition into an Olympic Class. RYA Champion Clubs - currently over 170 in the UK - form the foundation of this pathway and are considered ‘centres of excellence’ in delivering good quality race training in a safe and fun environment. The junior class associations the RYA supports also run Open training and both are routes to be ‘spotted’ and invited to join a Zone squad. It is similar for sailors with disabilities too. People who discover sailing through RYA Sailability groups and/or people with disabilities who sail at clubs, can all learn to race and race regularly with Sailability or at their club. Meanwhile active class associations, such as the, 2.4mR, Hansa and Challenger classes, stage regular Open and Traveller events nationwide, with most classes offering the same sorts of opportunities to compete nationally and internationally.

BOARD TALK

People love windsurfing for its diversity, and racing is a popular discipline. Olympic boardsailing, Formula and Raceboard windsurfing, Slalom and SuperX all see racers compete on a course, with vibrant junior and youth classes underpinning each. Specific windsurfing clubs aren’t as widespread as sailing clubs in the UK, but many sailing clubs, coastal and inland, have windsurfing fleets. Like with small boats and multihulls, there are RYA Learn to Race courses for windsurfing – Start, Intermediate and Advanced - available at RYA Training Centres. Meanwhile, the classes and UK Windsurfing Association (UKWA) run well-attended regional and national training, Championships and series, for fleet and slalom racing, with opportunities to compete internationally too. Over 220 windsurfers raced at the 2014 RYA/UKWA National Windsurfing Championships. The same chances exist to progress through the RYA’s Junior and Youth pathway to Olympic windsurfing. The junior class is currently the BIC Techno, and youngsters can learn to race through the RYA Team15 junior windsurfing programme before potentially progressing into Zone squads. Team15 is a great way to start windsurfing without having to buy kit at the outset.

BIG TIME

If the power of the sea captivates you, getting into big boat racing – yachts, racing cruisers and other keelboats – whether inshore or offshore, can provide the answer. Much of big boat sailing is about networking, enthusiasm and volunteering to crew. Like with smaller boats, coastal clubs are a great way to find a boat to sail on, whether through chatting to people in the bar and/or utilising the club’s ‘crew finder’ noticeboards. Social media is also an increasingly common way to make your availability known, even at short notice. Such networking can be a bit daunting for younger sailors so some clubs, for example Royal Temple YC in Kent and Sussex YC in West Sussex, have big boat academies to nurture the skills and provide the opportunities to get on to a crew. Iconic events, such as the J.P. Morgan Round the Island Race and Cowes Week, enable people who may not typically race to get a taste for competitive action, while different class and local/regional racing associations run regular regattas. There are also a number of popular Series, typically in spring and winter, organised by one or a group of local clubs, which is where many yacht racers cut their teeth. If you want to race at a particular event, or have some spare time you would like to fill with racing, online forums, social media and resources such as www. sailingnetworks.com’s Crew Finder can pair you up with boats needing crew. Progressing onto the elite, professional racing circuit comes largely through reputation and word of mouth. But initiatives such as the British Keelboat Academy, a partnership between UK Sailing Academy and the RYA are helping. The BKA is designed to support young people aged 18 - 24 in developing the skills needed to take their keelboat yacht racing to a professional level.

THE WORLD’S YOUR OYSTER

Once you have developed racing skills in any area, life is a box of chocolates. You can diversify your talents into other racing disciplines such as team racing, especially popular in universities and schools, and match racing, with the RYA’s annual National Series including RYA Youth, RYA Women’s and British Universities and Colleges Sport Match Racing Championship events. The lucrative World Match Racing Tour features some of the biggest global names in the sport. So whether you stick to racing a Laser locally, aspire to compete in a crossAtlantic challenge or dream of following a pathway to Olympic glory, everything is possible. www.rya.org.uk/racing

ExpErts’ forum

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

EMERGENCY OFFSHORE REPAIRS

emeRgency RepaiRs When talking about safety on board, everybody immediately thinks of lifejackets, emergency boats and flares, but what about repair kits? Álvaro Pipó, CEO of Composite Patch, explains why offshore sailors should all have one.

One great thing about most boats today is they are built of composite materials. Composites are everywhere: airplanes, cars, windmills, oil industry, bicycles and, of course, boats. With composites you obtain characteristics of steel structures but with the weight of plastic. It is relatively cheap (taking account its

advantages over other materials), strong, durable and easy to fix. But, of course, it can not protect you against everything. Structural damage while sailing offshore is a real danger and much more common than people think. There are a lot of objects floating in the water that can get you in trouble. A partly sunk container, a fishnet, illegal buoys, for example, can potentially hit your boat hard resulting in serious damage and a rescue call to the coast guard. Obviously, there are also other well known risks like colliding with nearby boats if you are taking part in a regatta or hitting reefs while visiting a charming small bay far from civilization. These are

just two of the most common accidents in recreational sailing. RepaiR like a pRo Offshore sailors should be well aware of these dangers and will no doubt face these problems more than once. A broken dagger board or rudder, say, can put you out of a race no matter if it is a few miles after the start or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

You never know when you might find yourself in a dangerous situation at sea, which is why it is important to have an emergency repair kit on board

That’s why an emergency repair kit must be on board rather than simply keeping faith in lady luck. Having worked with seasoned crews of top yacht race competitions such as the Volvo Ocean Race and the Vendée Globe, all agree that a good repair system needs to work for every sailor, pro or not, and in any weather condition. It means it has to be easy to use; the average sailor does not have any training in composites. Composite repairs enable the full process of fixing a crack or delamination in three easy steps: 1.Mixing the exact amount of resin and hardener to obtain a good adhesive. 2.Spreading the mix onto a fibre patch. 3. Applying it to the damaged surface.

On the other hand, the repair needs to be reliable. emergency situations tend to match with tricky weather, cold/hot temperatures or wet surfaces. So the repair kit must be trustworthy under any of these circumstances providing a permanent, strong and fast harden repair, even if it is underwater. Composite patch simplifies this process achieving four goals: errorproof system, a light small package, no additional tools needed and very fast repairs (repairs have been done under five minutes). This is why all boats racing the Volvo Ocean Race used them. Contact: www.compositepatch.com

Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

With the summer season now upon us it is time to get the sand between your toes and enjoy some very British seaside fun in beautiful Dorset.

BEST TWEETERS:

WE borrowed the old Windy and headed to Mudeford Quay, at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour, where you can moor off the beach or tackle the Race and head into the harbour. It has a max draft of 3.5”, so it is worth doing a little research before hand. Christchurch Harbour was formed at the end of the Ice Age, some 7,000 years ago, when sea levels rose. Wonderful natural beauties were created in the process. There was a piece published a few weeks ago titled ‘Des res by the sea, no facilities, a bargain at £240k’. It was referring to this magical, money earning spit of sand that has the most glorious stretch of beautifully coloured beach huts, providing real family fun through our long British summer season. Being mid-week we tied up on the pontoon at Mayor’s Mead, on the Stour, enabling us to get the bikes and find the lovely path out to Hengistbury Head starting on Wick Lane.

THE REVIEW

We chose The Jetty, right on the harbour in the grounds of the Christchurch Harbour Hotel. Chef Alex Aitken has worked his magic around this area for many years, via le Poussin and Limewood before settling in Christchurch where he runs three restaurants. Move over

Alex’s infamous twice baked cheese soufflé

@alexatthejetty @MudefordQuay @alexskitchen

Best of the rest Fish & chips – Alexander’s along the main Mudeford Road, past the Nelson pub and before Stanpit. Great, reliable fish and chips and definitely worth the queue. Take them along to the quay and watch the sun go down with salty fingers.

Weymouth scallops are a delightful treat

Padstein we have Mudken now. The Jetty is a stunning, contemporary timber and glass building, set on the water’s edge. The cloud pruned trees on the terrace add a Riviera feel, helped along by an azure sky with high cloud mottling – beautiful. All diners get a view of the harbour, which is interesting at whatever state of the tide. We watched Highcliffe Sailing Club battle it out against Mudeford SC in their Wednesday evening dinghy race. We chose the Colombard, a perfect light white to go with our selection of fish. The Jetty’s Villa Saint Michel is a quality example and I can also recommend the Picpoul, though more expensive. It may be old fashioned but they still do les amuse bouche here, and I have to say it always makes me smile. This time it was a selection of tender warm

octopus in a chilli sauce, a dinky seafood scotch egg and some ‘sweet as a nut’ tiny brown shrimp. Alex believes in local and makes the most of Dorset produce. Starters were bouillabaisse for me (as I can never resist the rouille, spread on bread and parmesan mallarky floater) and the infamous Alex twice cooked cheese soufflé, with crunchy, caramalised edges and gooey, eggy joy in the middle simply superb. The bream on crushed new potatoes was just as it should be; the sustainable fish flaking easily on the fork and the buttery spuds tasting like the first Jersey Royals used to. It has something to do with seaweed I’m told, or rather the lack of it being spread on the land. And the Weymouth scallops were a delight. Firm, sweet, with a smoked cauliflower puree, apple sauce blobs and

The Beach House – over the water via the ferry. It is a casual café with friendly young staff, great for a coffee break or crab cakes and a glass of rose. Hops tops: the mussels and salmon niciose. Maybe pricey for the actual quality when compared to other eateries around but for setting and logistics – most of their produce comes over via ferry - just enjoy the moment. cubes of divine pork belly. We could not manage a pudding so went for a walk around the deck before the light went.

THE HIKE OR BIKE

The King’s Arms – walking into Christchurch from Mudeford this pub is on the right just past the bridge. Again run by Alex Aitken who has created a buzzing bar with DJs on Friday and Saturday nights. Hops Tops: the 15 mile menu is £15 for 2 courses and a ‘Once Upon a Cosmo’ to start. The Captain’s Table – an attractive minimalist white sugar cube of a building on the river’s edge as you head up the Stour. A great spot for early drinks or cocktails on the terrace but I have not eaten here recently – send your thoughts in if you have please. at Mudeford and the convivial Beach House Café. The cycle is a doddle along good, level tarmac, enjoying wonderful views and avoiding pedestrians. If walking the 2 or more miles you can easily catch the train back to Christchurch. The nature reserve centre at Hengistbury Head is worth a stop off, if only to admire the beautiful carved gates by sculpture Tom Harvey.

CLEAN SLATE It was the custom in the old days to record the distances and courses on a log slate and, at the end of the watch, transfer this information into the deck logbook. When this was complete the slate was wiped clean for the next watch to take over. From this comes the notion of forgetting what has gone before and starting anew.

Solent based dinghy sailor david henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating.

Sailing then and now

David Henshall looks at how the Moth came to not only be the fastest dinghy in the world but leading foil development too. A quick look around the Solent during any weekend will show the wide profusion of yachts of all shapes and sizes. Yet, at the basic level, they all share the same fundamentals of keel, hull, accommodation and rig. Head up into Southampton Water however, or down to the waters of Hayling Island and it is immediately apparent that dinghy

sailing is heading off in very different directions. The conventional dinghies are all still very evident, but at the same time it is clear that ‘foiling’ is the modern route to going very quickly indeed. Few could have been unmoved by the sight of the amazing America’s Cup catamarans foiling their way at incredible speed across the waters of San Francisco Bay, but the International Moth Class had been spreading their wings for a decade or more before the first AC boats even thought of getting airborne. DUAL NATIONALITY Yet as well as being one of the most ground breaking and innovative of dinghies, the International Moth is one of the oldest classes and one with a very

Until the 1970s International Moths looked like small versions of normal dinghies

interesting history. The origins of the class hail simultaneously from Australia and the USA, as in both countries the idea of a small, una-rigged dinghy fostered almost parallel paths of development. In those days before the easily accessible world travel the two fleets, now both called Moths, were joined by a rapidly growing Moth scene within Europe, but as yet there was nothing in the way of bringing all the disparate activities together. Yet the basic idea was the same – a very simple set of rules that defined the boat as not more than 11ft long, with a sail area of 88sq.ft set on a mast with a maximum 17ft length. Unlike other ‘development’ classes there were few other rules and, in particular, no minimum weight requirement. Through the 1960s the Moth scene was a great place to be for the innovators in the dinghy scene. The small size of the boat and the options for designers to easily build experimental hulls out of cheap ply saw some very strangely shaped boats being trialled. In the main, though, International Moths still looked like small versions of the larger ‘proper’ boats, but this was all about to change. INTERNATIONAL FLEET For a start, in 1972 the work was completed that would see the

unification of all the national Moth fleets into a fully recognised international fleet, a move which set the scene for the next stage of the development. In Australia the prevailing strong breezes had seen the development of a form of almost flat bottomed scow that was nicknamed the ‘kitchen door’, with the hull form offering both stability and mind blowing performance from such a small boat. But in the UK hull forms were going in exactly the other direction, as far from the rectangular shape of the Aussie scows. The Lymington built ‘Magnums’ were getting ever more slim and dart shaped. With the World Championships being held on the windy waters of Australia, the expectation was that it would be an easy victory for one of the home grown scows; instead it was a narrow British boat that ended up dominating the results. Then, at Weston Sailing Club on Southampton Water, the scene was set for the next phase of development. Two Moth sailors happened upon the damaged hull of a catamaran and noticed that the forward 11ft was still sound. They cut away the damaged section, stuck in a transom and created a Moth hull that was less than a foot in beam. Most thought that this would be impossible to sail, but instead the cheeky idea proved that there were no limits as to how narrow a hull could be.

MOTHS TAKE OFF The narrow hulls were lighter and offered blistering performance, with the 11ft long Moths now being one of the fastest dinghies on the water. With the advent of new construction techniques and lightweight but powerful developments to the rig, boats were now light enough to Transporting consider ‘taking off’.style boats 1950s The idea of mating the Moth with some foils was another development that happened in a number of places at the same time, but very quickly the techniques needed to sustain ‘flight’ were quickly developed. The International Moths, who had always been at the forefront of technological development, now showed that they could also develop the new sailing techniques that not only saw the boats foiling, but staying airborne during both tacking and gybing. The speeds achieved by these 11ft flying machines are quite extraordinary, with the Moth now the fastest dinghy on the planet. The Moth class have never been one to sit around waiting for the next development. With the boats already leading foil development, one can but wonder what they will do next! www.internationalmoth.co.uk www.britishmoth.co.uk www.mothboat.com moth-sailing.org

MDL purchased over 5,000 1.5 litre bottles of One Water to send out to their customers in special water cooler bags, ahead of the boating season. As well as being a practical gift for a long day out on the water, 100% of the profit generated by One Water’s bottled water is donated to bringing safe, sustainable water supplies to communities across Africa. Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing for MDL Marinas, commented: “We are really pleased to have collaborated with One Water to give our berth holders a renewal gift that will help transform lives. We feel there is great synergy between our two organisations and hope the water we purchased will help make a real difference.”

Tell us in no more than 500 words what makes special:

Since launching 11 years ago, One Water has raised more than £11 million and changed the lives of 2.7 million people, funding water programmes in countries such as Malawi, South Sudan, Angola, Kenya and Niger. Ian Spooner, Marketing Director at One Water, commented: “Teaming up with a prestigious marina organisation such as MDL Marinas provides an excellent way of informing an audience, which is passionate about water, about the global water crisis, and how they can help.”

Falmouth’s new dry stack that opened in May has the facility to hold 48 boats and is designed for RIB’s and smaller boats up to eight metres. The facility offers unlimited launches and 24 hour security and CCTV surveillance. Customers will be able to request for their motor boat to be put in the water any day of the week - subject to a minimum of one hour’s notice and tidal constraints. On returning to the marina, boat owners will be able to leave their vessel on the waiting pontoon and hand it over to a member of staff who will then arrange for the boat to be lifted ashore, washed off and stored safely until their next visit to the marina. Mark Evans, Marina Manager at Falmouth said: “The advantages of dry stack berthing are proven, with lower maintenance costs, little or no fouling and a safe, secure storage system to accommodate the boats while ashore.” For more information call the Marina Reception on 01328 316620.

MARINA CHAT

WHAT’S HAPPENING ArouNd THE MArINAS

bizzy bee in The solenT In this new column we will be finding out more about the people who use and work at the many marinas around the UK. First up is Gary Pearson who has a busy summer planned aboard his Sealine S28.

Tell us abouT your boaT and marina: I own a Sealine S28 called Bizzy Bee and enjoy cruising around The Solent with family and friends. I have been a berth holder at MDL’s Ocean Village Marina in Southampton for three years.

WhaT are your summer plans? I have quite a busy summer ahead. We are taking part in MDL’s ‘Jolly to the Folly’, a Caribbean themed event, cruising across to the Isle of Wight where we will berth for the night and enjoy a meal at the Folly Inn. I am also using the boat to attend this year’s Isle of Wight Festival with my wife and friends and have taken part in a summer cruise along the coast to Poole with some of the other Sealine owners at Ocean Village. WhaT else have you been up To? I recently organised and took part in a charity bike ride to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. The 68 mile ride, from Penton Hook Marina near Chertseyon-Thames to the Ocean Village Marina,

raised £10,000 for the charity – double our initial target. This is a cause that is particularly close to my heart after I suffered a heart infection last year. The care I received was phenomenal, so the charity bike ride was my way of giving something back. It was also a great social occasion with a team from MDL taking part, alongside other berth holders from Ocean Village and members of the Yachting and Boating World forum. If you would like to donate, please visit www.justgiving.com/teams/ BikeForCharity. WhaT do you like abouT ocean village marina? Ocean Village Marina is in a great location in the shelter of Southampton Water. When we want to take a trip we also have access to many other cruising destinations. When we are in Southampton, the marina itself has a busy social side and there are many

shops, restaurants, cinemas and bars right on our doorstep. There always seems to be something going on at the marina, which I love. There is a real buzz around and everyone is always very friendly; we really enjoy chatting to other berth holders along the pontoon. The Ocean Village team often stop by with a trolley of Pimms or a tray of bacon baps for all the berth holders to enjoy – it is little touches like this that make the marina really special. do you have any Tips for boaTers? We often take advantage of MDL’s Freedom Berthing package. This is great

for boaters like us who enjoy lots of travelling. Last year we berthed our boat on the River Hamble for two months, firstly at Port Hamble and then at Mercury Yacht Harbour so we could enjoy the Round the Island Race and Cowes Week. Let us know if you would like to be featured in Marina Chat. editor@allatsea.co.uk ocean village marina 2 channel Way, southampton, hampshire, so14 3Tg T: 023 8022 9385

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS

DEACONS MARINA AND BOATYARD Deacons Boatyard Limited Bursledon Bridge Southampton SO31 8AZ www.deaconsmarina.com info@deaconsboatyard.co.uk 023 80 402253

DEACONS was first established in 1922 by Francis Deacon and has been owned by the Fuller family since the early 1960s. For many years Deacons was very much a working boatyard. During the war there was no leisure boating at all so the workforce were enagaged in making ploughs, servicing landing craft and steam pinnaces from Portsmouth Dockyard. These days the boatyard has a friendly yet professional approach with flexibility that comes from being a small business. A lift dock was built around 2003 and a Roodberg electric Hoist was installed. This

replaced a slipway which used to have a deep groove in it so keel boats could be hauled out on a trailer towed by tractor, sometimes a very tricky operation in certain wind/tide conditions. The increasing length and beam of modern boats, amongst other factors led to the need to reconfigure the marina. In 2014 a new marina was installed with finger berths and updated power/water points. A huge number of changes have occurredat Deacons Boatyard in the last 20 years but througout it has always retained its character.

FACILITIES Located upstream in a sheltered part of the Hamble River, there is a hardstanding area with an under cover shed for working on boats. The yard has an electric crane capable of lifting boats up to 20 tons or 45ft in length used in conjunction with a remote controlled boat mover. A program of continuous investment has been undertaken in recent years providing better facilities and services including state-of-the-art showers and toilets with self-contained unisex units.

There is also a family room with baby changing and hair dryer facilities and separate facilities for work contractors. The experienced and adaptable workforce at Deacons is able to carry out repairs on most kind of craft from minor jobs to larger re-fits. Unlike many marinas, boat lifting and repair work services are all carried out by Deacons inhouse. This facilitates a faster turnaround where larger, complex work is involved, such as keel removal.

CRUISING

THERE is an abundance of choice for cruising in the Solent whether day sailing or for longer trips. For a day trip possible options are Beaulieu River, Key Haven at the western end of the Solent and the Isle of Wight. Depending on draft, you can sail over to Cowes or further up the Medina River. Then there is Yarmouth, Wootton Creek and Bembridge. Circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight is another option to consider in the right conditions. For a weekend cruise there is Lymington River and Berthons or Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth harbour. The latter is good for restaurants, shopping and nightlife and is right next to the Spinnaker Tower. There are plenty of distractions for children. Further afield, good cruising options are the Channel Islands and the north coast of France, with a return recommended to the wonderful River Dart. The prevailing wind is south west. If you are sailing

during the season then you are unlucky to get wind strengths that make life difficult, but during the early summer months whilst the sea is warming up sea fog and easterly winds can be expected. Although the area is one of the best sailing areas in northern Europe there are places which can be challenging, especially the Channel Islands during spring tides. However in the main good pilotage and navigation is all you need.

ACCESS

LoCAtEd very close to major motorway junctions and immediately opposite the station there is less time driving and more time on the water. there is an excellent chandlery on-site as well as shops and pubs all within a stone’s throw and of course it is also easily accessible to the Solent. LANd: It is located on the Hamble River, midway between Southampton

and Fareham. From the M3, follow the M27, coming from the west, turn off at junction 8, and follow the A27 to Fareham. It is just 3 minutes drive from junction 8. From the east, turn off at junction 9 and follow signs to Southampton on A27. Southampton international airport is just 15 minutes away and the railway station is 50m. SEA: From the mouth of the Hamble River, follow the main channel upstream for approximately

2.5 miles. the river bends sharply to the west opposite Swanwick Marina. deacons Marina is the last marina upstream for yachts before the A27 bridge. Stay within the well marked channel whilst in the river. In the Solent you have the infamous Bramble Bank, which is marked but can catch the unwary on route to Cowes. Call before hand by telephone or go alongside the waiting pontoon and head to the office.

PERSoNAL RECoMMENdAtIoNS “JUSt a note to say a big thank you to all of your team for getting the work done on Mary Weer, especially within quite a tight time frame. We also appreciated all the advice and the help from the office. She is now safely moored up in Port Solent. We really are appreciative and think you are a great team. It is nice when so many different pieces of work can be accommodated within one boatyard. We will hope to bring Mary Weer round to visit once we have got her more up to scratch.” Yours Caroline and Tony B.

BERtHING & StoRAGE

tHE capacity is 135 berths afloat and they can accommodate boats up to 55ft and 2.6m draft afloat. they have a range of berths from semi tidal up to 8m, mid-stream pontoons and walk ashore finger berths from 8m - 15m, all with access

“CoULd I say a great big thank you to everyone at deacons as, during out very brief visits, we have been given help, down-to-earth advice and support which has given a couple of very novice boat owners a sympathetic introduction to sailing. 10 years ago I bought a clapped out old 24’ Snapdragon which I didn’t have the ability or funds to restore or actually get into the water during my 10 months ownership and I am glad that this time, hopefully, we can get a lovely ship back to full working order.” David R

to water and power through smart meters. the lifting facilities are made up of a 20 ton boat lift, 20 ton remote controlled boat mover, yacht cradles and space ashore for 165 boats. For visiting boats there are usually a few berths available in the main season with advance notification.

“tHE four of us were discussing yesterday evening the fabulous service we have enjoyed from the deacons Boatyard team: we have been made to feel extremely welcome. You have been incredibly flexible and understanding as our plans have evolved and changed along the way and the boys have received some really excellent help and advice from Nick and the yard boys. I understand that they were brilliant yesterday when the boat was being launched, so please pass on our thanks to all of them.” Becci E.

“The most regular compliment we receive is the combination of being very friendly and accommodating whilst knowing our trade. Most of our wonderful customers come back for the professional one stop shop that we offer. Within the team at Deacons we have people with many thousands of sea miles under their belt, combined with many years of work within this fantastic industry serving the customers in all aspects of the business. It is a real pleasure and long may it continue!” Lucas Shotts. MD. BUSINESSES

VISItoRS are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. Many pub names have a nautical theme. n the Jolly Sailor is 10 minutes away by boat and was famously featured in the 1980s soap Howards Way. It has a superb location on the banks of the river. n the Navigator is 5 minutes walk over the bridge to Swanwick. this is also a handy B&B. n Bistro Number 12 is on-site at deacons with an outside decking area. It is run by Sonia and Engin and is open late from thursday through to Saturday. n the Peking duck Chinese restaurant is immediately opposite deacons in Cabin Boatyard. other speciality restaurants are also close by.

tHINGS to do

tHERE is much maritime history here dating back to the 15th century. About half a mile upstream from deacons, near the QE2 activity centre by Manor Farm Country Park, is a yellow post marking the wreck of the Grace dieu. this boat was built for Henry V at Southampton in 1414 - 20 and fitted out in Hamble. It was one the largest ships ever at that time being around

Number 12 Bistro/café offers a delightful menu for the hungry boater/visitor. they also have a liqueur licence. they are open until late on thursday through to Saturday.

220ft long. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century many large battleships were built in Bursledon for the Navy such as the devonshire, Winchester, Lancaster and HMS Elephant. during the second War, Manor Farm Country Park was also the central training base for the d-day Combined operations in Normandy. during the War work on leisure boats dried up completely so the workers at deacons were kept busy overhauling steam pinnaces from Portsmouth dockyard and servicing and repairing Landing Craft from HMS Cricket. Hamble was also the location for lunching midget submarines which were built close by in Sarisbury Green. they were effectively used against enemy shipping. In 1950 Francis deacons and neighbouring Boatyard owners established the Bursledon Regatta. one of the trophies is the deacon Challenge trophy and the company still supports this community event. there are excellent river walks either side of the Hamble and Manor Farm Country Park which is a dinghy ride away or a short walk via Blundell Lane.

Excellence in Marine Engineering

Here are a couple of American drinks to add an American theme to our own regatta season. New York Ice Tea is a well known cocktail over the waters but less so here. Harry Brompton’s Alcoholic Ice Tea made in London aims to bring the experience to UK drinkers in a handy readymixed bottle. At 4 per cent, the 275ml bottle counts as 1.1 UK units. Lightly sparkling, made from Kenyan tea with added distilled grain spirit and infused with citrus giving it a tangy taste, it is a clean drink with no artificial additives. Drink it chilled and/or over ice but if cooling facilities are scarce on board the bilge-locker temperature will work just fine. Ashore turn it into a fancy cocktail in a high-ball glass by adding a slice of lime and/or mint and cucumber. So easy and a great summer drink. About £2 per bottle at Waitrose and larger Sainsbury’s stores. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale American craft beer is brewed and bottled in Chico, California and shipped over here.

BEER REVOLUTION

While we try to keep up with our own UK craft beer/boutique breweries’ expansion, across the pond they have their own craft beer revolution. Before Prohibition America had more than 1,750 working breweries. In 1980 there were only 100 brewing bland lager-type beers, which for most of us were typically American style such as Coors and Budweiser. Now there are over 2,000 craft breweries in the USA focusing on taste and character. The choice of brewed and bottled imports from the US in our supermarkets is growing.

Style’ IPA at 5.9 per cent and £1.79 a bottle. Bit of coals to Newcastle there! There is a UK craft brewery specialising in American style beers; the Belleville Brewing Co in Wandsworth, south London as featured in All at Sea in February last year. My sailing club tasting panel critically tried the Sierra Nevada Pal Ale from California, 5.6 per cent and £1.79 at Waitrose for a 350ml bottle. It is bright, light brown, clean and crisp and its intense pine and grapefruit aromas derive from brewing with whole-cone Cascade American hops. Judgement: a refreshing beer perfect for summertime al fresco on the club terrace. www.bellevillebrewing.co.uk

AMERICAN BREWS

Our local Waitrose offers five American brews: Sierra Nevada IPA, Torpedo Extra IPA, Samuel Adams Boston ale and Brooklyn lager plus, curiously, Goose Island which bills itself as ‘English

THERE is going to be a distinct American presence in and around Cowes this year. The 2015 Transatlantic Race from Newport, Rhode Island will be arriving mid-July with the prize giving scheduled during the Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary Regatta, then Cowes Week and this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race, marking the 90th anniversary of the first Fastnet in 1925, which led directly to the founding of the Royal Ocean Racing Club.
