KeeP calm and carry on boating

What does the Brexit vote and the political and economic ramifications mean to you, the boaters in the UK? All at Sea asked key figures in the marine industry for their reaction. Will they be able to navigate stormy seas or will it be plain sailing and business as usual? STEADY as she goes is the overwhelming message from the boating industry post Brexit. That is a message that will resonate through the whole boating community that looks at the weather, calculates the tides, plots a course and keeps a good lookout all round to be ready for anything. Reaction to the referendum result from the leisure marine sector has been realistic but optimistic – ready to take advantage of any wind shift. The Royal Yachting Association that fights the corner for everyone who goes on to the water for fun, said: “Whatever

the UK’s future relationship with Europe, we will work hard to ensure that recreational boating is as unfettered as possible.” As the RYA points out, regulatory challenges have an EU dimension – such as red diesel, border controls, invasive non-native species, biocides and European marine protected areas. There is also a wide range of issues affecting boating that have nothing to do with the EU, including requirements for qualifications when you go overseas which is generally specified in national legislation. Domestic UK issues such as national marine protected areas,

• Quality engineering • Innovative design • Competitive pricing • Guaranteed compatibility • Unrivalled warranty

offshore renewable energy installations, carriage and disposal of flares, lifejackets, light dues and alcohol limits, are unlikely to be affected by the outcome of the referendum. The RYA emphasised that the European Boating Association is a Europe-wide, not an EU organisation, as is the UN Economic Commission for Europe which created the International Certificate of Competence. Richard Lambert, President of the Yacht brokers, Designers and Surveyors Association said: “Until the actual point of exit from the EU, all of the EU legislation and trading arrangements

will still be in force for the UK so will remain as the status quo for at least two years.” Matt Cook from the holiday company Ocean Elements added: “We spent the previous 12 months preparing for the potential of the vote to swing either way and so we are well positioned to cope with anything the next few months will throw at us. “For now, our prices will remain the same and we are continuing to get strong demand for our package holidays.” Paul Martin of BHG Marine in Lymington, warned that currency turbulence could affect prices of imported boats, engines and kit as most UK boat builders bring in many components from overseas. He said:” Short term, there will be some deals to be done on existing stock but after this there will be noticeable price increases. Southampton Boat Show will be very interesting this year!” Looking on the bright side, Neil Chapman, Founder and CEO of Boatshed. com, which has connections across Europe and the world, said: “Let’s not forget that boat ownership is a great way to enjoy the European lifestyle without the administrative hurdles of home ownership.” He added: “We are proud to have developed cross-border business processes and technology. Whether the UK is in, or outside the EU, that innovative, problem solving approach to boat sales will not change. A fanatical ongoing focus will continue to help us thrive in the new landscape as it develops,” he said. That was a sentiment echoed by Tony King Sales Director of Elsan Limited who said: “Elsan have sold products world-wide for many years and there is no reason why export to Europe should become more difficult than export to any other developed country. “The only risk is if the EU decide they are going to make life hard for British suppliers. But if this happens we should pick up more business locally from European competitors provided EU closed door policies are reciprocated in the UK. “Overall, leaving the EU is going to benefit any company that can adapt” Fritz Joussen, CEO of TUI Group, which owns Sunsail, said the group had highly professional risk management processes which have taken into consideration all possible scenarios. “The EU without the UK is barely conceivable but we respect the democratic decision of the British people. “We are well prepared and confident that as a truly global company we will not be significantly affected. “It remains to be seen how the decision will affect consumer sentiment.” Philip Marsh, Managing Director of

Chatham, said currency fluctuations could be an issue as the company buys in dollars and therefore could affect prices. He added: “Our exit has already started to shake up the EU and long-term, I think there will be a reform more generally across other members of the EU.” Chris Feibusch, Head of Global Marketing for Drew Marine Signal & Safety, said: “As a nation we have chosen to back ourselves to remain a major economic force on a world stage only now without a safety net. “Instead of reflecting on what the alternative could have been, as an industry we have a duty to pull together, to view this as an opportunity. “Our maritime industries have always been a force to be reckoned with and with a collective willingness to adapt to a new world order, there is no reason why this should be any different in the future.” Meercat Workboats, the Portchesterbased boat builder which has announced a move to Marine Park at Hythe near Southampton, is looking forward to reigniting its export business. The company has built 28 boats to date, exporting two to Norway, two to the Republic of Ireland, one to Sweden, two to Saudi Arabia, one to Tasmania, one to Peru, and one to Australia. Nicholas Warren, the CEO of parent

“Instead of reflecting on what the alternative could have been, as an industry we have a duty to pull together, to view this as an opportunity.” company Burgess Marine, said: “We are genuinely excited about some very real export opportunities - this is great news for British workboat building”. British Marine, which represents more than 1,600 members, said it had always remained neutral on the decision to leave or remain. “EU legislation and trading arrangements will still apply whilst the Government negotiates withdrawal with the EU, which is expected to take a minimum of two years. “We will continue to ensure our members are informed about the implications for their businesses and will do so in representing industry concerns to Government throughout this transitional period.” Andrew Sims MD AJS Technical Services (UK) said: “ It is not that the new reality will be a negative one just different! “British products, service and systems are valued around the world, we should now get out and bang our drum.”

How do you think Brexit will affect your boating lifestyle in the short term and over the next few years. Please enter our online survey at www.allatsea.co.uk

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde It has been a busy news month, to say the least. The referendum result has dominated headlines for some weeks now and we can expect it to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The impact of the Brexit result, both positive and negative, will be felt by everybody around the country. So, we asked key figures in the marine industry for their reactions, which you can read on page 3. Those responses have been very interesting, but we also now want to hear from you about how you believe Brexit will affect you as a boater. Contact us at editor@allatsea.co.uk or at the All at Sea Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ allatseanewspaper). We also have a poll on the subject at the All at Sea website (www.allatsea.co.uk) As you will read on page 6 it was a thrilling Round the Island Race with plenty of drama from Sir Ben Ainslie’s record being broken to the sinking of the yacht belonging to the Commodore of the Island Sailing Club. Sadly a competitor suffered a serious injury on board a boat the day before the race. We send our best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. I am very lucky to have the delightful Mersea Island a short drive away and, being a foodie, I went with my family to the Mersea Island Food, Drink & Leisure Festival. Britain’s most easterly inhabited island, sailing is a big part of life on Mersea Island and the waters are busy with all kinds of boats as well as

19

the colourful sails of windsurfers and kitesurfers. Not surprisingly, then, one of the exhibitors at the festival was the RNLI. I have to say they were absolutely brilliant – so friendly and full of information without being pushy. They had loads of gear for children to dress up in (my daughter, Isabelle, loves a good photo opportunity), which was certainly drawing in the crowds. I hope they had lots of people support them that day, as they certainly have enthusiasts in my children. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

HELPING TO SECURE THE UK’S BORDERS

THE EU Referendum illustrated how important the immigration issue is to many voters in the UK. The media stories about migrants attempting to cross the Channel in the weeks leading up to the vote helped to keep the topic high on the agenda in the EU debates. One of these occured at the end of May when the UK coastguard was called to a RIB carrying 20 people off the Kent coast. On board were 18 Albanian migrants. Five of them have claimed asylum and 13 are being removed from the UK. After that incident two men, Robert Stilwell from Dartford and Mark Stribling from Farningham, pleaded guilty to immigration offences and will be sentenced on 29 July. According to the National Crime Agency migrants are paying up to £13,500 to gangs to help them reach the UK. These criminal networks are also thought to be targeting smaller east and south coast ports as well as larger ports. While not all crossings make the news headlines 100,000 illegal migrants were stopped from entering Britain by UK Border Force officials in 2015. Border Force is the professional law enforcement command within the Home Office responsible for securing the UK border by enforcing immigration and customs regulations across 138 ports and airports across the UK and overseas. The UK border is also protected by a fleet of five sea patrol vessels, known as cutters. The cutters are responsible for detecting prohibited and restricted goods, immigration crime and fiscal fraud by boarding and searching all types of vessels and taking part in multi-agency maritime operations in both UK and international waters.

Border Force officers have new powers to board boats. From 31 May the new maritime enforcement powers came into force, which allow Border Force officers to stop, board, divert and detain vessels and arrest anyone they suspect has broken immigration law. UKBF works with organisations such as the RNLI, Coast Guard and National Coastwatch Institution. The volunteers of the National Coastwatch Institution (motto ‘eyes along the coast’) man 52 lookout stations around the coast of England and Wales. A large number cover the south coast from Kent to Cornwall. The remit is to observe the coastline along both the sea and the immediate land, keeping an eye on local vessels and coastal paths and beaches, primarily to aid safety. Incidents of any sort are reported directly to HM Coast Guard and through them to the RNLI, Police, Ambulance and Air Ambulance services, local harbour authorities and the UK Border Force. NCI tells us that the UKBF has requested extra diligence in spotting suspicious vessels trying to avoid the ‘authorities’. Any suspect is reported immediately to HMCG and thence to UKBF, with whom they work closely. James Brokenshire, Immigration Minister said: “Our investments and improvements over the past six years have left us with one of the most secure borders in the world. But we know we must go further and continue to adapt and react to the challenges we face. “That is why we will be establishing a series of operational hubs, procuring additional boats and introducing new powers to make the UK’s coastline even more secure from criminals looking to

smuggle guns and drugs or facilitate illegal entry into the country.” Patrol vessels will be introduced, helping to intercept attempts to smuggle dangerous weapons, drugs and migrants into the country. The first batch will be in place in the coming months, with all of the vessels operational by the end of next year. The vessels will add to the protection already offered by the Border Force cutters and Royal Navy vessels which patrol the UK coastline. In addition, Border Force will set up three maritime co-ordination hubs in Cornwall, the Thames Estuary and the Humber over the summer, committed to tackling a range of threats on the UK coastline. The question remains whether this will be enough to control the situation and allay the concerns of the public, especially with the consequences of the referendum result unknown. The head of Eurotunnel, Jacques Gounon, has said the Brexit decision could result in a rush of migrants trying to enter the country from France. Jacques Gounon told the BBC: “I am afraid that any Brexit consequences could give a threat to migrants that they could be prevented from going to the UK definitively going to the UK - in the years to come. This could generate an additional new migrant pressure, in order for such people, desperately, to reach the UK before Brexit is enforced. So I do think and I am afraid that we could have an increased migrant pressure during this summer, as a Brexit consequence.” Share your thoughts on this subject with us: editor@allatsea.co.uk / www.facebook. com/allatseanewspaper

READER’S LETTER: RAF Ventnor memories Dear All at Sea, I picked up the June edition from Greenwich Yacht Club and found it most interesting - as usual. What was of particular interest was the article by David Henshall about RAF Ventnor. As a national serviceman from 1957 -59, I was stationed for a while at Ventnor. That was my best posting! During our time off, I would walk along the clifftop and stop for a chat at the Coastguard station or explore the beach below St. Boniface Down. It was some time in September 1958, I think, that I was on duty at the radar screen when I noticed a blip near the

top, moving quite rapidly from east to west, north of the Shetlands. I tracked it for a few minutes and calculated that its speed was about 2,000mph, and height 70,000ft. You can imagine what was going through my mind, considering the political situation at that time. The object was faster and higher than any aircraft we had then. Even the Canberra, which could reach 63,000ft, could not get near it. However, the officer i/c scrambled two fighters (Javelins, I think) from RAF Leuchars. They could not catch it. By then it was over the north Atlantic and soon vanished from the screen. We just had to

think of it as a UFO, or a Russian rocket, more likely. Recently I was relating this story to an acquaintance who was an observer on Javelins at that time, who could not believe what I was saying. He was based at Leuchars and remembers it well. He was in one of those planes! I would like to re-visit Ventnor, but am not sure how much of the original RAF base is still there, or whether I would be allowed in anyway. I suppose the only way to know is to go there. Thanks again for a brilliant article, and jolly good paper! 3151496 SAC Munro. (Ron)

Andrew Pope, Head of Design at Fairline Yachts, said: “Alberto clearly demonstrated his understanding of the Fairline brand and we are very excited to see him applying his talent and design language to our future new models. The addition of Vripack and the excellence in naval engineering that they bring will ensure each of our new models are at the leading edge of marine technology.” Alberto Mancini said: “I am looking forward to creating a new era of Fairline yachts with a new, fresh, sleek design of both interior and exterior. My inspiration is taken from my experience in the mega yacht field, but also from the rich history of Fairline building timeless, classic, usable yachts for almost 50 years. “No doubt the best way to create a successful yacht is to receive a blank sheet of paper and begin sketching – and

that is exactly what I am doing right now for Fairline Yachts. With the expertise of Vripack I believe we have the perfect collaboration of British craftsmanship, Italian style and Dutch engineering.” As well as the new collaboration Fairline Yachts has announced the Targa 53 OPEN is to debut at Cannes Boat Show on 6 September followed by a UK premiere at the Southampton Boat Show. Andrew Pope, said: “Owners tell us that entertaining is one of the most important reasons for having a luxury cruiser and the Targa 53 OPEN provides a sense of style, space and comfort like no other. This new model opens up a host of possibilities thanks to its unrivalled comfort, space and flexibility. All our 53ft models have a common platform approach, offering complete flexibility of layout and options to suit each individual customer, which is at the heart of Fairline’s design philosophy.” www.fairline.com

The 50nm Round the Island Race, which had over 1,500 entries, took place in far stronger winds than originally anticipated, leading to the cancellation of some classes of boat. ISC Sailing Flag and head of the ISC Race Management team, Dave Atkinson, said: “It has been more of a challenge this year than we have had in recent years. The heavy weather forced us into making some pretty major decisions in cancelling some classes but we feel that with safety always being paramount, we were entirely justified in doing what we did.”

It was a fast-paced day that started at a later than usual 0830 with the firing of the first gun by hRh Prince Michael of Kent GCVO. The winner of the race’s biggest prize, the Gold Roman Bowl for the first IRC boat on corrected time, was Bernard Langley’s TP52 Gladiator. She powered around the course to become the second monohull to finish, crossing the line less than four and a half hours after her start. Although Gladiator’s owner, Tony Langley, is currently racing his other TP52 in Sardinia, his three children, Tom, Charlotte and Bernard, helped to sail her to victory.

Boat captain Brett Aarons said: “It was a windy and rough race, especially in the overfalls off St Catherine’s and Dunnose. It was very wet, both on deck and below.” Sir Keith Mills’ FAST 40+ Invictus missed out on winning the coveted Gold Roman Bowl, having to settle for second place. his crew included Prince harry and Invictus Games competitor Zoe Williams. Although the top four places overall went to high-budget campaigns, the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race has always been one in which amateur sailors and those with possibly shallower pockets can excel. Paul Dunstan’s modest 25ft Folkboat from 1974 was one of the best placed smaller boats this year, taking ninth place overall on corrected time and second place in IRC Division 3D to Andy Shaw’s Flying Boat. The largest monohull in the fleet, Mike Leopard’s 100ft Leopard, took monohull line honours, but failed to beat the record time he set in 2013 by 13 minutes. The high winds did have their benefits, as described by competitor Joy Smalley on board Alacrity: “We were expecting champagne sailing and sunshine to celebrate our skipper and his wife’s 10th wedding anniversary. We knew that was

not going to be the case when the first announcement was for all participants to wear lifejackets. This was reinforced heading out onto the water with many yachts sporting reefed mains and No 2 genoas. The windy conditions provided us with a fast finish in 7 hours 8 minutes - a great overall result and more time in the bar to party.”

The prizegiving at the Island Sailing Club attracted a huge audience for the presentation of Gold and Silverware. In the welcome by Vice Commodore Peter Bingham and Race PRO Mike Peskett, tributes were paid to numerous ISC teams, many comprised of the 100 or so volunteers that work so hard for the sheer love of the race every year. Thanks also went to the race sponsor, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, in this 12th and final year of their partnership. MULTIHULL ReCORD sMasHeD NOT aLL pLaIN saILINg... The Race Village at Cowes Yacht haven, complete with live entertainment, bustling bar and food attractions brought the race alive late into the evening, especially for late stragglers who had battled strong winds and big seas in small boats after 12 hours at sea. Despite the unusually testing conditions, only a small percentage of the fleet retired, with the overwhelming majority of competitors - some of whom saw gusts to almost 40 knots successfully completing the course. By 2100 there were only a handful of the back markers left on the final few miles of the race course. The challenging conditions led to one serious incident when Alchemist, belonging to the Island Sailing Club’s commodore, sank just east of the Needles after hitting a shipwreck. Alchemist had been a familiar boat in the race having competed for many years.

The Yarmouth and Mudeford lifeboats went to her assistance with Mudeford rescuing all the crew just seconds before the yacht sank. Commodore, Mark Wynter, had not been on board and fortunately none of the crew were seriously injured. Alchemist was not the only boat to suffer in the conditions. The Yarmouth lifeboat was called out to six incidents. One yacht was stranded in a busy shipping channel after losing its steering near Ventnor whilst carrying 12 people. In a more serious incident, the day before the race Cowes RNLI lifeboat was launched after a yachtsman received serious head injuries while the crew were practising in the Solent. The yacht could not proceed to shore under its own power because a rope had fouled the propeller. The man, in his 30s, was taken by ambulance to St Mary’s hospital, Newport.

SIR Ben Ainslie’s multihull record – held since 2013 – was broken by MOD70 trimaran Phaedo 3, in a time of 2 hours 23 minutes, 23 seconds. This was an impressive 28 minutes ahead of the record set by Ainslie. After the race skipper Brian Thompson said: “It was a beautiful day out there, but not the perfect conditions for the fastest trip ever. had we been able to reach the Needles without tacking we might have finished 10 minutes faster, but that would be a really special day.”

The MOD70 Phaedo 3 was on a mission to grab race headlines. Image: onEdition

Meanwhile, rosberg demonstrated modern luxury with the S-Class Cabriolet and the Mercedes-Benz Style luxury motor yacht ArrOW460-granturismo.

gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler, said: “The Cigarette racing speedboat and our Mercedes-Benz Style luxury yacht ArrOW460-granturismo represent a coming together of two design icons. “The ArrOW460-granturismo carries our Mercedes genes throughout. We have transferred an automotive design idiom to a yacht – and this design statement far outside the usual mainstream in the boat industry allows us to create a totally original aesthetic.”

Five gold, four silver and four bronze medals wrapped up a successful home World Cup for Team GB. Britain’s sailors ruled the waves at the World Cup competition in Weymouth and Portland, winning five golds medals at the final event before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Luke Patience and Chris Grube picked up bronze – their first World Cup medal together – after a sixth place in the 470 medal race, while Giles Scott sealed the gold in the Finn class. Giles said: “it has served as a very good training regatta, that is for sure, and in honesty that is how everyone here is taking it. it is very much a stepping stone to put everything in a place in Rio, but ultimately it is a regatta and everyone wants to win it so to be able to do that is great.” Double World Champion Nick Thompson took the overall victory in the Laser and was joined on the podium by teammate and training partner elliot Hanson who won silver. “i am really, really happy. Winning the last two big events has been amazing and certainly gives me a massive confidence boost going in to Rio,” said Thompson afterwards. “it is always nice to win on home waters as well, in front of a home crowd.” Charlotte Dobson and Sophie Ainsworth continued the golden run for the hosts, with a fourth place in the medal race

enough to hold on to the top spot in the 49erFX event by just one point. Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves dropped out of the medals in the final Nacra 17 race at the last World Cup regatta in Hyeres but made up for it this time with a gold medal. in the 470 Women’s medal race three British crews swept the podium spots. Sophie Weguelin and eilidh Mcintyre won the medal race to advance from overall fourth to silver, but gold went to Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark whose second place was enough to elevate them to the top step of the podium, adding Weymouth and Portland World Cup gold to their World Cup victory in Hyeres. Bronze went to Amy Seabright and Anna Carpenter. elsewhere, in the 49er competition there was a silver medal for Dylan Fletcher-Alain Sign and bronze for John Pink-Stuart Bithell, while emma Wilson and izzy Hamilton added silver and bronze to the British tally from the RS:X women’s windsurfing event. RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park said: “it has been a tough week for a lot of sailors from every event. it has turned out to be a better practice for Rio than we expected, particularly as there was so much light wind, so much hanging around in the first half of the week. Next month All at Sea will bring you a Team GB Olympic preview guide. #RoadToRio #Rio2016 www.britishsailingteam.com Read more about Nicola Groves on page 28.

MARY ROSE On ShOw THE Mary Rose Museum is to reopen this month. after six months of work and weeks of testing all of the environmental systems the Mary Rose Museum will open its doors on 20 July. You can follow the hashtag #MaryRoseRevealed on Twitter to discover how the ship’s crew are getting ready for the re-opening. Visitors will see stunning panoramic views of the ship from all nine galleries through floor to ceiling glazing on the lower and main deck. On the upper deck, you will breathe the same air as Henry VIII’s warship for the first time in 23 years, with only a balcony between you and the hull. The only 16th century warship on display in the world, the Mary Rose has been undergoing continuous conservation since she was raised in 1982. The hull was first sprayed with a mist of fresh chilled water and then with a water soluble wax from 1994. In april 2013 the Mary Rose entered a stage of controlled air-drying and a brand new museum that wowed the world was opened later that year. The hull has now reached a stable state with this drying process, making the ship hall the largest environmentally controlled display case in the world. www.maryrose.org #MaryRoseRevealed

BOOST fOR ISLANd fERRY JUNe marked the beginning of a new long-term plan for The Hayling Ferry. The Hayling Ferry Trust is ensuring the Hayling Ferry returns to service and Sir Richard Branson has made the first donation of £5,000. The Hayling Ferry Trust will manage funding and support for the ferry operator to ensure this much loved link can again connect Hayling Island to Portsmouth and is aiming to raise a total £40,000. Clare Satchwell, who is leading the launch of the Trust, said: “We have been working very hard to bring back the ferry and everything is in place to get it started again. We just need money and local support. Richard Branson and the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada team responded to calls for help from local residents. This is amazing news and we are confident that we can get the remaining funds required to get the ferry back up and running really quickly.” In March this year local resident Mark Coates led a group of residents in contacting Richard Branson, Virgin and The Virgin Kitesurfing Armada Festival –

which is held on the island every year – to help bring back the Hayling Ferry. Richard Branson said: “The residents of Hayling have always made us feel so welcome when we have been on the island. When we heard about the difficulties the much needed ferry was having, we knew we had to step up and do our bit. Hopefully now we will soon see the remaining funds raised and the ferry returning back to action.” Dan Charlish from the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada said: “our kitesurfers and festival goers love coming to Hayling for the festival. It is a beautiful island, has great kitesurfing conditions and most importantly a great community. We hope our donation is the first of many and the ferry is back out on the water soon.” The Hayling Ferry Trust is calling on businesses, residents and local authorities to pull together and save the much needed link back to the mainland. www.thehaylingferrytrust.org Turn to page 35 to read more about kitesurfing and the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada.

Happy BirtHday your Majesty BoATeRS around the country celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday last month. Berth holders at Premier Marinas raised a glass to her Majesty The Queen and attended a Queen’s Party at their home marina at an event hosted by Premier Marinas. Coinciding with national celebrations, it was an event to bring the boating community together and raise funds for the RNLI and two local charities, the Murray Parish Trust and the Rainbow Centre. A ticketed event, the afternoon affairs were replicated across seven of Premier’s nine marinas: Brighton, eastbourne, Chichester, Southsea, Gosport and Port Solent, Swanwick and Falmouth.

TO JO D IN A Y !

The Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro, a four-stage solo marathon regarded as the unofficial world championship of solo offshore racing, has made its debut in Cowes. For five days in June, Cowes Yacht haven was transformed into an interactive Race Village, while 39 Figaro Bénéteau IIs and their fluttering forestay flags decorated the marina. In a dramatic finish to the leg from Deauville to Cowes, the leading competitors sailed over the finish line at the Needles Fairway buoy to rumbles of thunder, an amazing lightening show and torrential rain. After an intense battle between the frontrunners, Armor Lux skipper erwan Tabarly was victorious. After the tough three days fighting through fog, rain, strong currents, storms, light airs and sleep deprivation, Alan Roberts aboard Alan Roberts Racing was the first British skipper to cross the finish line in 17th place. While the fleet was in town the Race Village offered everything from a Victorian Fun Fair, to skateboarding sessions, a climbing wall, live music, live streaming of the euro 2016 football, children’s activities, try sailing experiences, food stalls, live cooking demos, a bar, an air display and more. Then, after three days of rest and recuperation in Cowes, the fleet set sail from Cowes. In a mass of coloured sails and Solent spray, 39 competitors flew across the Royal Yacht Squadron start line. The Royal Yacht Squadron sent the solo sailors on their way with a traditional five cannon start signal. Despite the grey weather, people gathered from Cowes Parade all the way to Gurnard Green to cheer the skippers on their way to Paimpol in France. The second leg was won by Yoann Richomme on Skipper Macif 2014. www.lasolitairebompard.com

COmmOns triumPh Over the LOrDs MPs swapped the benches for boats when they took to the water for a charity sailing race for Saill4Cancer and Westminster Boating Base. The match took place on the Thames in front of the Houses of Parliament in 10 identical Enterprise dinghies. Reviving an annual tradition, the House of Commons were due to compete against the House of Lords. Whilst there are a number of ‘sailing’ Lords important business in the house prevented them taking to the water. Instead a number of MPs stepped into the breach and sailed in the Lord’s Red team. As to the winner it was agreed that, although the race was won by the red team, as no Lords were on the water the trophy would be awarded to the House of Commons. The racing was held in Enterprise

dinghies as 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of this, one of the world’s most popular and affordable boats, originally designed and built on the River Thames by Jack Holt. Members of the Enterprise class association towed their boats from all over the UK to enable the race to be held. As part of its 60th anniversary activities, the Enterprise Association has chosen Sail 4 Cancer as its official charity partner. As well as the money raised by the charity sailing race there will be a blind auction of a fully rigged Seldén mast. The Enterprise fleet is celebrating its anniversary with a fundraising Black Tie Dinner on the last night of the Enterprise National Championships at Brixham Yacht Club on 29 July. AFTER leading much of the way Alex Thomson arrived in Les Sable d’Olonne, France after finishing the Ocean Masters New York to Vendée Race in third place. The race is a 3,100 mile single-handed sprint from downtown New York across the Atlantic to Les Sables D’Olonne and is the penultimate challenge before the Vendée Globe, which begins in November. Thomson led for the majority of the race, positioning himself ahead of the 13 other competitors in the fleet and, at times, outpacing them. However, during the skipper’s fifth night offshore he experienced difficulties with the autopilot system on-board his IMOCA 60 race boat, HUGO BOSS, and was forced to work through the night to make emergency repairs. Operating on little sleep, in winds of over 40 knots Thomson was able to make the vital repairs before fighting his way back to a podium position. The last few days of the race saw Alex and rival race boats Maitre Coq and Edmond de Rothschild switch positions, as each fought to secure the top spot. It was Jérémie Beyou on Maître CoQ who was the eventual victor. Alex said: “This is a fantastic achievement; not only for me but for the entire team. Just weeks ago the boat was in the shed, undergoing major repairs. Today we crossed the finish line in third place, in what was an incredibly challenging race. This is a superb achievement and a testament to the hard work of the whole team.” Prior to the New York to Vendée Race Alex had been forced to retire from the

Transat Jacques Vabre race in November after his race boat was capsized by a rogue wave in the Atlantic. The setback forced Thomson and his team to spend months making significant repairs to the boat, which had only recently been unveiled following a two year long design and build process. Now the British skipper has his sights firmly set on the non-stop, unassisted round the world Vendée Globe race, known as ‘The Everest of sailing’. The gruelling 25,000 nautical mile race takes place every four years and, to date, has only ever been won by a French competitor. This time around, however, with a podium finish in the New York to Vendée under his belt, Alex is confident that he can make history and become the first British skipper to claim victory. All at Sea will be catching up with Alex before the start of the Vendée Globe. www.vendeeglobe.org/en

WIN A STANDARD HORIZON HX870E HANDHELD DSC VHF TRANSCEIVER WITH BUILT-IN GPS AND IT FLOATS TOO!

TOTAL PRIZE VALUE OF MORE THAN £1,000

FIVE TO GIVE AWAY ALL At Sea has teamed up with the leading suppliers of buoyant handheld transceivers, Standard Horizon, to bring you the chance to win one of five of their hugely popular HX870E sets. An upgrade to the best selling HX851E, the compact HX870E is packed with innovations, including the ability to use the built-in GPS as a navigation aid. Up to 20 routes with a total of 200 waypoints can be stored in the memory, and displayed on the large (1.7in x 1.7in) back-lit screen. The HX870E is built on a die cast chassis, which enables it to cope with the harshest environment, and is fully waterproof to the IPX8 rating (5 feet for 30 minutes). Should you follow it overboard, there is an automatic strobe light that will flash a bright SOS the moment the radio hits the water, even if the radio is switched off at the time. Despite its compact size, less than 6 inches tall (minus aerial) and barely 2 inches deep, this rugged and waterproof set packs a powerful 1800mAh battery and has the ability to transmit at 6W. Standard Horizon kit is very intuitive to use. There are programmable quick keys which give access to programmable scan, priority scan, dual watch and tri-watch, with a preset key to recall any of 10 favourite channels. There is also a noise-cancelling function for both the transmission and receiver audio. The dedicated distress button is located on the side of the set, with a button for Channel 16 on the front. If you are planning to cruise the inland waterways of Europe, the HX870E (the E suffix denoting the set’s EU configuration) provides the mandatory Automatic Transmitter Identification System (ATIS), which can be activated via the menu. To allow the HX870E to connect with other on board devices, such as a laptop for uploading waypoint information, it features a USB data port that can output NMEA sentences (DSC, DSE, GLL, RMC, GSA, GSV and GGA) at a rate of 9600 baud. The HX870E can tap into several power sources, including via a 240V AC mains converter or 12V DC adapter, which can fully recharge the Li-Ion battery in 3 hours. If no onboard power is available, then you can slide in an interchangeable tray of 5 AAA alkaline batteries. As with all of Standard Horizon’s waterproof products, the remarkable HX870E is covered by a threeyear warranty, and features the kind of specification and versatility you would usually expect to find on a dashboard-mounted class D VHF transceiver.

NEW KIT ON THE GO WITH STOJO

PATHFINDER PRO SART

TESTED

We mentioned the silicone Stojo cup a few issues ago and since then have had one in the office to try out. It has had a thorough testing both in the office and, of course, on the go to find out if the £14.99 price tag is justified. As Eskimo point out, hundreds of billions (yes billions) disposable cups are thrown away every year. Because this is collapsible the idea is that you can carry it in your pocket or bag and save on all that waste. Additionally, on board it is a space saver and useful cup to have to hand. The Stojo very easily extends to its

full size and we were more than happy to use it, but do not think it will keep a drink warm for extended periods. It is not meant to be a thermal cup. It is also not a rigid cup, but we did not find this to be a problem. We were concerned drips would be a problem once it was squashed back down, but there were none. Ours is the black version but other colours are available. We will definitely continue to have coffee on the go with Stojo. The only problem is we might need some more… £14.99 www.eskimoagency.com

An important addition to any boat’s survival gear kit, the ACR search and rescue transponder is a fully-approved SART that complies with IMO SOLAS regulations. The manually-activated ACR Pathfinder PRO SART is designed to assist in the rescue and recovery of life rafts and survival craft. It transmits a series of pulses which are displayed on a ship’s radar screen as a line of dots, providing a bearing to the survival craft. Compact for easy life raft packing, the Pathfinder PRO SART is supplied with a mountable storage bracket and a black telescopic pole. £400 www.acrartex.com

Tired of your gear getting wet on board? The PRO DRYBAG 45L will safeguard sensitive equipment in extreme conditions. The PRO DRYBAG 45L, approved as carry-on luggage, is a 45 litre waterproof and shockproof sport bag which has the highest waterproof classification to IP68 standard and is waterproof down 164ft. £276 www.subtechsports.com

The Ray52’s size makes it great for crowded helms, while its oversized controls and big backlit LCD display make it easy to use, day or night. Like all fixed mount marine VHF radios sold today the Ray52 features Class D Digital Selective Calling. SAIL fOR GOLD ROADSHOw London 2012 offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really connect our Olympic sailors, our heroes, with the Great British public. The sailing in Weymouth and Portland went down a storm and the support from the home crowd was stunning. So, how do we connect the fans and sailors when they are 6,000 miles away in Brazil? The RYA’s Emma Slater reports

Kevin Podger, Secretary at Royal Lymington Yacht Club, is delighted to be part of the Roadshow, as they join forces with Lymington Town Sailing Club. Kevin said: “We have always had a great interest in the Olympics, especially when one of our members is involved. We have had members involved in all but one Olympic Games to date, so this is a great opportunity to share a momentous event with the local community. We are also excited to be working with Lymington Town Sailing Club to hold taster sessions and offer more people the chance to try our sport. “Nick still visits the club occasionally and his parents have been members here for a long time. It is really special to have a club member at that level who wins World Championships, but also returns to the club and helps out and shares his experiences with the younger club sailors. “We have our youth week running during the medal race week, so a lot of those youngsters will take inspiration

F

or Rio 2016, we are delighted to be running the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow, which will travel round the country during Medal Race week to venues that have a special connection with our potential medal contenders. Members of the public are welcome to join each event, with free sailing sessions and off-the-water activities for those inspired by our sailors’ endeavours. The roadshow will begin at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy on 14 August, on Medal Race day for our windsurfing stars Bryony Shaw and Nick Dempsey. Bryony will be looking to add to her

2008 bronze medal, whilst Nick will see if he can complete the full set, in his bid to add 2016 gold to his 2012 silver and 2004 bronze.

SUPPORT IN LYMINGTON

On August 15, the Roadshow will be stopping at Royal Lymington Yacht Club, jointly hosted by Lymington Town Sailing Club, to cheer on local medal prospect Nick Thompson and Midlands-born sailor Ali Young. Nick will be aiming to add an Olympic gold medal to his two world championship titles in the Laser class, whilst in the Laser Radial, recently crowned world champion Ali will be looking to join him atop the podium.

Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign

Grafham Water Sailing Club will be the venue on 16 August as medal favourite Giles Scott competes in the Finn class. On the same day, local boy Ben Saxton will be aiming for victory with sailing partner Nicola Groves in the Nacra 17 medal races. London 2012 silver medallists Saskia Clark and Hannah Mills are primed to go one better as they once again compete in the women’s 470 on 17 August. Cardiff Bay Yacht Club will be packed to the rafters to cheer on club member Hannah as she seeks to add yet another medal to her collection. The final day of action will see the Roadshow visit Rutland Water Sailing Club as Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign compete in the 49er medal race. With a packed schedule of activity planned

throughout the day, friends and family will be gathering to cheer Dylan and Alain on in a very hotly-contested class.

SCOTTISH SESSIONS

In Scotland, there will be two packed days of sailing sessions at Glasgow’s Tall Ship Riverside, before crowds gather to watch the racing. On 17 August, Luke Patience will be looking to add a gold to the silver he won at London 2012 in the men’s 470. In Rio, he will be joined by crew Chris Grube, competing at his first Olympic Games. The following day, fellow Olympic debutante Charlotte Dobson and crew Sophie Ainsworth will be in action in the 49erFX, which is making its first Olympic appearance.

SUPPORT THE TEAM

The Roadshow will travel the length and breadth of Great Britain, with plenty of on and off-the-water activities to get involved in at each stop. If you are feeling inspired to get afloat for the very first time, there will be ‘try sailing’ opportunities and taster sessions, with British Sailing Team members on hand to advise and inspire as you take your first steps on the water. Even if you just want to watch the Olympic drama unfold on the big screen, there will be no better place than to cheer along the team with the rest of the crowd at one of the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow days. Duncan Truswell, RYA Sport Development Manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to partner with these venues to support our athletes as they go for gold in Rio. “Each of these events will be a fantastic opportunity, not only to get afloat, but also to spectate and hopefully celebrate with the team’s friends, family, sailing club members and volunteers who have supported the sailors through the years. I am sure that it will be a fantastic summer of sailing and hopefully the team, and the opportunities we provide, will inspire people to find out why sailing is so much fun. “We would like to thank each of the venues and the local sailing providers for sharing our vision and agreeing to help make these events possible. We hope to see the local sailing community turn out in the evenings to watch the medal races and cheer our sailors’ home.” To discover how you can support our sailors and to find your local event, visit www.rya.org.uk/roadshow

The Archaeology of a Naval Battlefield By Innes McCartney £26.99 The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle and the only full-scale clash of battleships in the First World War. For years the myriad factors contributing to the loss of many of the ships was subject to speculation. Here marine archaeologist and historian Dr Innes McCartney reveals for the first time what became of the warships that vanished on the night of 31 May 1916. Turn to page 29 to read more about the Battle of Jutland centenary.

The Psychology of racing

n Goal setting (splitting up the race into legs with specific objectives)

last year lizzy Foreman took part in the mini transat and hopes to race in the vendee globe one day. in this series the experienced racer takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the challenge these men and women face. this month the psychology of racing is under the spotlight. Sail racing places many demands on the skipper and crew, both physical and psychological. Consequently the sport appeals to people who are naturally independent, resourceful, organised and have a desire to succeed. Yet when it comes to preparing for key events in the race season, many sailors rarely give a second thought to mental preparation. as a result they can find themselves panicked and distressed throughout a race, rather than being able to act in a controlled, proactive manner in difficult situations. To develop a flexible, strong and enduring mind you must understand how you react to these challenges and the factors that influence your emotional state while competing. This will allow you to develop and implement a variety of coping strategies. Those who are mentally tough know: n How to manage their emotional state n How to independently make decisions n How to prioritise n How to deal with set backs n How to adapt to different situations n Their limits and when to push n and have self discipline Therefore they are able to deal with the four main stressors faced on

All AT SeA AUGUST 2012

Sailors encouraging each other before a race

Lizzy knows all about the physical and psychological demands racing places on sailors

the water: environmental, physical, competitive and personal.

EnvironmEntal strEssors Too much or too little wind, physical isolation from land and other boats, being too hot or too cold and threats from shipping and wildlife can be dealt with by: n Creating a back up plan (if the shroud breaks i will…) n Using your shore team (contacting land via email, sat phone, downloading a GRiB file - weather

forecast information) n Normalising the situation (making a cup of tea, eating a meal to recover from a stressful event) n Controlling emotions (using music, writing in the logbook, talking to competitors, visualising how you managed before in a similar situation) n Rationalising (the wind will come back eventually) Physical strEssors Sleep deprivation, physical exertion and nutritional issues can be dealt with by:

n Creating and following a sleep plan (see All at Sea June 2016) n Creating and following a specific physical training programme (three months minimum prior to the main event) n Preparation (ensuring you have packed enough / extra food for the event taking into consideration the weather) n Planning ahead (e.g. reefing or dousing a sail ahead of a depression / squall, preparing a thermos flask or quick meal to consume before / during heavy weather) comPEtitivE strEssors Poor progress, technical issues, threats from other competitors can be dealt with by: n Remaining calm (using music, deep breathing, imagery techniques) n Rationalisation (the race is not won until it is over) n Confidence (remembering previous successes) n Prioritisation (correct heading and sail trim foremost)

PErsonal strEssors Personal issues can actually be the most stressful when preparing for or partaking in an event: family demands, financial worries, time constraints, work commitments and feelings of guilt can all affect performance on the water, but can be reduced by: n Effective time management n Rationalisation n Remaining task focused (by concentrating on the wind, waves, motion of the boat) n Clear communication in conclusion, mental toughness (the ability to change your attitude to best fit the situation and to balance the rational and emotional mind) should be given equal attention as technical, physical and tactical preparation. Before casting off for your next event, consider what environmental, physical, competitive and personal stressors you may face. Have you got a coping strategy in place? MEET THE TEAM Land Rover BAR

With under a year to go until the first races of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers on Bermuda’s Great Sound the #RacetoBermuda is truly on and this month the teams are competing for a second time at Portsmouth. It was in 1851, with Queen Victoria watching from the Royal Yacht, that a radical looking schooner called America ghosted out of the afternoon mist and sailed past in first position. When Queen Victoria asked one of her attendants who was in second place the reply was ”Your Majesty, there is no second”. that phrase is still the best description of the America’s Cup, and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence. America, representing the young New York Yacht Club, went on to Image: Roman

beat the best the British could offer and win the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Pound Cup. New York Yacht Club Commodore John Cox Stevens and the rest of his ownership syndicate sold the schooner and returned home to New York as heroes. the trophy was donated to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift, which said it was to be “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations.” the America’s Cup, without a doubt the most difficult trophy in sport to win, was born. BEST OF THE BEST the louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series features many of the world’s best sailors competing against one another on foiling, wing-sailed 45ft catamarans. the World Series events, of which Portsmouth is the seventh, are gearing the teams up for the louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers in Bermuda in 2017. the racing will take place on Bermuda’s Great Sound, an amazing stage with crystal blue waters and pink-sand beaches that create a stunning backdrop for this ultimate sailing competition. the overall ranking position in the World Series determines the starting points score of the teams in those Qualifiers. the top four challengers after the Qualifiers will then advance to the Challenger Playoffs to decide who will compete against current defender, ORACle teAM USA, in the 35th America’s Cup.

AC45 the teams are racing on the AC45, which is a state-of-the-art catamaran with a solid aeroplane wing-like sail and hydrofoils to provide lift and speed. A smaller version of the 34th America’s Cup boat, the AC72, this craft can reach speeds of up to 35 knots. Unlike some sports this is a onedesign boat with each designed to the same set of rules. Interestingly, the development of hydrofoils in the last two years has led to a new sailing style. even the best in the world like Sir Ben Ainslie have had to learn new skills.

New Zealand to win 9-8. Sir Ben Ainslie was part of that winning team. They might have lost out in the last event but Emirates Team New Zealand is the most established sailing team in recent times competing in all events since Fremantle 1987, except the 2010 Deed of Gift match. They have a very impressive record of winning the America’s Cup in both 1995 and 2000 and winning the Louis Vuitton Cup in 1995, 2007 and 2013. An innovator in the sport, Emirates Team New Zealand were the team to successfully develop and bring foiling into the mainstream of America’s Cup and all of sailing. Artemis Racing, skippered by Britain’s Iain Percy, was founded in 2006 by businessman and sailor Torbjörn Törnqvist. The team was one of the challengers in the 2013 America’s Cup. New teams for the 35th America’s Cup are Groupama Team France, Softbank Team Japan and Britain’s Land Rover BAR.

LAND ROVER BAR Land Rover Bar is the 21st British challenger for the Cup.Sir Ben Ainslie and the Land Rover BAR team are hoping to not only bring the America’s Cup back to the UK where it all began in 1851 but also become the first British syndicate to win the world’s oldest trophy. It was just two years ago on 10 June 2014 that Land Rover BAR was launched in the presence of the Duchess of Cambridge, who has shown continued support since that time. winner, Sir Ben Ainslie. It was Ben’s vision to bring the America’s Cup home. The team that has developed over the last couple of years is made up of some of the best British and international sailors, designers, builders and racing support. The Land Rover BAR Team HQ is now open on the Camber in Portsmouth and has a visitor centre showcasing the sport, innovation, technology and sustainability at the heart of it. An apprenticeship and training scheme will ensure the site is sustainable and there will be a drive to ensure the project acts as a catalyst to encourage participation in the sport of sailing, all areas of the marine industry

and develop the talent of the future. Sir Ben Ainslie said: “Portsmouth has a great maritime heritage and we felt it was a natural home for the team’s permanent base in the UK. There is excellent access to the water for the team’s training and to host future America’s Cup events, with fantastic spectator viewpoints. “We hope through our journey to bring the Cup home to Britain we will inspire more young people to get involved in the sport, along with supporting the growth of the marine sector in the Solent area to match the country’s F1 innovation hub.”

READY FOR ACTION

Q&A WITH LESLIE GREENHALGH, EVENT DIRECTOR, LOUIS VUITTON AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET WITH THE AMERICA’S CUP?

My first experience working with the America’s Cup was back in 2001 when I became the Head of Sponsorship and Marketing for GBR challenge - the British America’s Cup team at the time.

HOW BIG IS THE TEAM DELIVERING THE AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES PORTSMOUTH? Initially one year out there is a core group of seven managing the operations and Race Village plans, on water delivery and team bases, commercial and marketing. This then gradually builds to around 100 people during the event.

TELL US ABOUT THE AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES.

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is a racing circuit featuring the best sailors in the world competing on foiling, wing-sailed 45ft catamarans - a really exciting and fast paced event. This July we will be welcoming the series back to Portsmouth along with six international teams for a second time. Portsmouth’s maritime history makes it the perfect venue to play host to an event such as this and in 2015 the event

was a total success. This year we have built upon those successes and will offer visitors a new and improved Race Village with exhilarating views of the racing accompanied by live expert commentary. We will also be giving visitors the opportunity to gain even more insights into the race with opportunities to meet the sailors, teams and kit behind the racing. Thrilling air displays, interactive activities in Southsea Skatepark and lots more will also be included in the programme. It is really not to be missed!

THE HOME SUPPORT FOR LAND ROVER BAR MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE?

Yes, last year we saw close to a quarter of a million people visit Portsmouth for the event over the four days and show their support for the home team, which really energized them resulting in Land Rover BAR being crowned champions. This year we expect even more support from the British public and already the support we have received for the event has been huge.

HAS THIS EVENT BEEN MUCH EASIER TO PUBLICISE WITH THE SUPPORT AND BACKING OF HIGH PROFILE AMBASSADORS SUCH AS SIR BEN?

Yes, Sir Ben Ainslie is now a British sporting icon. As a sailor he is well known within the country, especially since his gold medal win at London 2012

and this is Land Rover BAR’s home America’s Cup event. Land Rover BAR is now a local Portsmouth business, well established in the community here and on the Solent and so the support continues to grow.

WHAT ARE THE HIGH POINTS OF BEING A PART OF THE LOUIS VUITTON AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES?

For me the high points are the diverse range of businesses and nationalities we get to work with to deliver a world-class event. Everyone involved is extremely passionate about both the event and the opportunity this gives Portsmouth and the UK. Also the diversity of tasks that you have to cover to deliver an event of this scale is significant and so no two days are ever the same. The final high point for me is that the event starts on a set day and nothing can change that so you become very focused, which is a good thing!

WHICH TEAMS/SAILORS DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH? I look forward to working with all the teams; they each bring a different energy to the event. The racing is full on and you cannot call who will take home the glory – I have never experienced anything like watching racing like this and I have been watching racing for a very long time. I recommend that you book your ticket as you do not want to miss it!

WHAT DOES POST EVENT HAVE IN STORE FOR YOU? Teamorigin Events and the wider ORIGIN Sports Group will carry on after the event working on a wide range of sporting projects and events. Under the Chairmanship of Sir Keith Mills, there is always something new around the corner.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?

The support we receive from the sailing fraternity in Britain is fantastic and we are extremely proud to represent you and put on the biggest sailing event to come to our shores. I would like to thank everyone who is coming to the event and helping put our great sport on the map again in 2016. “The quality of club racing is the key to the success of the X class”

T

he X One Design was designed on the Isle of Wight by Alfred Westmacott who built the first boat in 1909 at his boatyard on St helens Duver. The 21ft boat has a long heavy keel, which makes it very stable and comfortable. The large open cockpit easily accommodates the normal racing crew of three but will take more for gentle family activities. Racing started in 1911 at Netley at the Motor Yacht Club (now Royal Motor Yacht Club). By the start of the First World War 10 boats had been built. At first the yachts were only numbered but after the war the RMYC allocated the letter X after it was found that Y and Z had already been designated. The hull shape has remained unchanged since the original design but there have been changes to the approved types of timber, fastenings and surface treatments. One of the most important was allowing hulls to be epoxied. This has resulted in considerable savings in upkeep and prolonging the life of the boats.

Just under 200 boats have been built to date, of which about two-thirds currently race regularly. These boats are based at six locations around the Solent, namely at Parkstone, Lymington, Yarmouth, Cowes, hamble and Itchenor. The racing in each of these divisions is held on Saturdays and Sundays and, usually, a mid-week evening from May to September. The biggest annual event is Cowes Week where the class usually muster one of the largest fleets (80+) in the regatta. A one-design fleet of this size produces close and exciting racing for competitors at all ability levels. At the front of the fleet you can expect to see a good smattering of Olympians, world and national champions, whilst further back there are some with a more relaxed attitude. There is a great mixture of age, experience and background amongst the owners of XODs. Old sailors race with young sailors in equal boats of almost equally widely varying ages.

affOrDable bOaTs

Cost is always an important consideration when deciding what type of boat to purchase. Relative to many comparable classes, XODs have been fairly cheap to buy and reasonably inexpensive to maintain, particularly for those who have the time and inclination to do the work themselves. Boats can be picked up for between £3,000 and £12,000, depending on their condition. Most come with a rich provenance and often a known colourful background, with owners tending to be merely custodians buying into and caretaking a piece of history for the next generation. A new boat would, of course, be considerably more expensive and it is a testament to the demand for Xs that two new boats are being built during 2016 at Whittle Marine near Yarmouth and at Cake Marine in Lymington. There are many classic yachts 100 years old or more, but none can match the popularity of the

X Class. The boat’s qualities remain as popular as ever providing the very highest levels of one-design racing on a classic yacht that is crew friendly and affordable. www.xonedesign.org.uk Next month All at Sea will preview Cowes Week.

T

o finish our last regatta before the Olympic Games on the top step of the podium was a fantastic feeling for Ben [Saxton] and I. The Sailing World Cup in Weymouth and Portland gave us a great boost heading into the final weeks of training for Rio. Ben and I sailed well throughout the week and managed to convert our lead going into the medal race into a gold medal at the end of it. The World Cup fleet was really tough and the result shows we can compete with the world’s best. We are serious contenders. We are not the only ones; there is a handful of us. We will work unbelievably hard with the time we have left and will start the Games confident that we have done all we can to get us in the best place to challenge for the medal places.

dreAms come TrUe I am so excited and proud to be representing Team GB in Rio. It has always

Image: Pedro Martinez / Sailing Energy

The british sailing Team’s Nacra 17 sailor Nicola groves describes turning a dream into reality as the final countdown is underway. been a dream of mine to go to the Olympics but I did not think it would actually happen. Four years ago I was working in an advertising agency in London. I was the intermediary between the clients and the creative team. It was a great job for me as I am quite an organised person and a people person. Even so, the move to go sailing when the 49erFX and Nacra 17 were brought in is something that I will never, ever regret. By that time I was 22 or so, I thought my opportunity had gone, but it then presented itself. I thought “if I work at this I can get there”. I did not think it could be a reality but I managed to make it one. One of the scariest moments of my life was when I finally handed in my notice at work and was like ‘right I am going to do this’. I quit my perfectly good job, which I liked, and went full time sailing for the love of it. Sailing is my passion and to be able to do my passion and my hobby

as a full time occupation and put everything I possibly can towards it was an unbelievably big move. I will never regret it. besT performANce I watched everybody in London 2012. I just remember being on cloud nine for the majority of it and I was not even competing. I do not quite know what it is going to be like competing myself, but it will be great fun to be part of it, be part of the team and the atmosphere out there in Rio is going to be amazing. While I am really looking forward to Rio, at the same time we have got to remember it is ‘just’ racing. We go racing every day. Ben and I have been doing it together for two years and throughout our whole lives. Although it is the Olympic Games and everything is going on onshore and it gets all crazy, when the countdown hits the five minutes to the start we have just got to do

what we do, do what we are good at, which is why we are there. That is what we have got to remember and keep in the back of our minds. I think if I could sail my absolute best and give it everything, going through the whole regatta knowing that I could not have done any more, then I will be very happy with my performance whatever happens. Ben and I would love to come away with a medal, and it is possible, but if we can do everything we can – the bits that you think are the most important – and come away from the regatta knowing that we sailed the way we wanted to sail it and did not get forced into the mind spin “oh I cannot do it” or “it is too complicated”, then I will be happy with that.

I blubbed at the TV for all the podium ceremonies in 2012, so I warn you now, if I make it there in Rio it will be a very emotional experience! BATTLE of JUTLAND CENTENARY

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating. This month he looks at 36 hours that changed the first World War. Now we can look back at the Battle of Jutland at a major new exhibition in Portsmouth.

At low water the remains of V44 can be clearly seen. Image: Maritime Archaeology Trust

Visitors to the Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth now have another attention grabbing exhibit to visit with the opening of ’36 Hours: Jutland 1916, the Battle that won the War’. it tells the story of the single biggest battleship v battleship action, fought at a time when the Dreadnought reigned supreme and before air power would become the key factor in naval conflicts. JUTLAND’S LEGACY Even by the scale of World War 1 warfare the magnitude of the action, fought out over two days in the waters to the west of Northern Denmark, was incredible. 250 ships, of which 44 were the most powerful battleships, would slug it out in action that would later become mired in controversy. on 31 May Jutland did not start well for the far more powerful royal Navy Home Fleet as two modern battlecruisers soon blew up with a loss of 2,294 men and only 11 survivors. Little wonder that Vice Admiral sir David Beatty would complain that “there seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today”. As the action continued into a second day, at last it looked as if the royal Navy were finally going to be able to bring their overwhelming firepower down onto the enemy which, even allowing for the poor quality of the British ordnance, would surely have brought about a great victory. However, as the Germans turned

to make their escape to the south, they threw their smallest boats, the destroyers, into the action launching a barrage of torpedoes at the English Fleet. in overall command of the Home Fleet, Admiral sir John Jellicoe carried

a huge weight of responsibility; not for nothing had Churchill described him as “the one man who could lose the war in an afternoon”. Jellicoe turned his front line ships away from the new threat and by the time they were safe the German fleet was vanishing into the dusk. in these pre-radar days, the lost contact meant an early end to the battle but already the seabed of Jutland was littered with the wrecks of 25 warships from both fleets. Despite the title of the new exhibition, Jutland may not have won the war, but as a ‘score draw’ it ensured that British Naval supremacy would keep the blockading stranglehold on Germany in place. As one of the great sea stories, taking in the technology and the experiences of those who fought at Jutland, the new exhibition is a ‘must not miss’ addition to the already action filled Historic Dockyard. TIMELY REMINDER By an amazing twist of fate, just a little further up into Portsmouth Harbour is a real life reminder of Jutland, with the remains of a warship that played a full part in the battle. Yet the remains are not of a home ship, but of the German

Jutland anniversary dinner in the gun room of HMS Lion, May 1918. Image: National Maritime Museum, London

destroyer V44, who twice closed in to fire torpedoes at the English ships. Along with her sister ship V82, the pair of destroyers would come to an ignominious fate at the end of the war, being used for target practice by the Navy school of Gunnery at Whale island in Portsmouth Harbour. By the late 1920s the remains were settling into Whale island’s deep mud, only to be disturbed when the upper harbour was later dredged to accommodate the arrival of the cross channel car ferries. their remains were clearly visible, though few who saw the boilers and remains of a forecastle as they headed off on holiday could have realised the historical significance. the story of V44 and V82 is now being revealed by the Maritime Archaeology trust who, with generous funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, has commenced work on a project titled ‘Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War’. the scale of the task is impressive with over 1,000 wrecks falling under the remit of the project. the location of the two destroyers, embedded as they are in near liquid mud, makes investigation tricky, but drones have been used to

extensively survey the resting place of the two ships, with the resulting 3D images suggesting areas that would reward further research. CENTENARY EXHIBITIoN it is certainly fitting that 100 years on the tale of Jutland is at last being told in clear and authoritative detail at the Dockyard Exhibition, whilst at the same time, there is that link to the part played in the battle by the German Forces. in those 36 blood soaked hours in the North sea, 8,645 lives were lost, yet just one month later even this mechanised slaughter would be overshadowed by the opening day of the somme. Jutland, though, remains the greatest sea battle of World War 1 and a crucial moment in our maritime heritage. it is therefore well worthy of a trip to Portsmouth to see what really happened in the mist and murk of the North sea. EXPERTS’ FORUM

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

RAYMARINE QUANTUM PULSE COMPRESSED RADAR Raymarine Pro Ambassador Alan Watson describes the technique and the benefits of pulse compression radar. ALTHOUGH new to leisure radars the technique of pulse compression in radar is not a recent innovation. In fact the original patents date back to the 1940s. However one of the requirements of implementing this technology in small craft is to move away from magnetron transmitters to all solid state (silicon). In the leisure/small commercial market it has only recently become cost effective to do this is. So, the military has used pulse compression technology for a while and it will, in the coming years, become the standard technology for small craft radars with production of magnetron based radars being slowly phased out. The emphasis will shift from hardware to software and we can expect to see new and advanced features appearing on our radars.

energy and so be as good at spotting targets as a traditional high power pulse radar. In order for the long pulse to have the same information content as the short, it must be swept in frequency (so called ‘chirp’). There are many ways of achieving the sweep from a simple sweep to stepped or coded steps used by the military. The mathematics of this rapidly becomes daunting but the easiest to visualise is a stepped sweep. Imagine a long pulse made of a series of stepped frequencies. This is then transmitted and reflects back from the target just as transmitted.

Close range detection

WHAT IS PULSE COMPRESSION? Pulse compression describes a range of techniques whereby a long pulse is transmitted and then processed in the receiver to look like a short pulse. By transmitting a very long pulse (compared to a normal pulsed radar) it is possible to have low power but still high

Raymarine’s Quantum Radar featuring CHIRP pulse compression technology

TRADE OFF REMOVED In the receiver there is a special filter that delays each step progressively until they are all at the same time and then adds them together. Effectively we have taken a row of ‘bricks’ laid horizontally and now stacked them vertically. We have something that looks like a short high power pulse. Essentially we have used processing to overcome the traditional radar trade off between pulse width and discrimination. To achieve the swept frequency we need to be able to control the frequency of the transmitter. This cannot be done with a magnetron so it is necessary to go solid state; this in turn can be done as the transmitter is now low power. Apart from making ‘chirp’ possible this has the benefits of reduced weight, power consumption and improved reliability as there are no high voltages.

Over time all small boat radars will become solid state and use this or similar techniques. CHIRP RADAR The new Raymarine Quantum CHIRP Wireless Radar was launched earlier this year. This new radar is the smallest, lightest and lowest power radar of its kind on the market. Quantum has several important new innovations including a solid-state signal generator (no magnetron, and as such, lower emissions and instant power-on), CHIRP pulse compression technology (excellent long and short range performance), FLIR’s exclusive ATX signal processing (superior target separation) and wireless connectivity (easy installation and very thin/flexible cabling). www.raymarine.com

BOATING PEOPLE

Q&A with Amy Willerton, model and crew member for the final leg of the ClipperRound the World Race

31

HAVE YOU COMPLETED ANY OTHER PHYSICAL CHALLENGES?

I was part of the Russian Circus, which was physically challenging. Also running the London Marathon and living in the jungle for the ITV show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

YOU TOOK PART IN I’M A CELEBRITY GET ME OUT OF HERE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. HOW WILL THIS COMPARE?

Image: CLIPPER VENTURES/Dean Lewins

After training to sail in the Clipper Race the main difference in the challenge is that the danger is so much more real at sea. Although everything in the jungle is genuine, you are aware that there are people constantly on standby in case anything dangerous does happen. On the boat you are constantly surged with adrenaline because you are out in the middle of the ocean - with only yourself and your crewmates to rely on.

YOUR USUAL WORK IS VERY GLAMOROUS. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL COPE ON BOARD GARMIN FOR TWO MONTHS?

It is not always as glam as it seems, trust me! I have taken part in a lot of challenging activities throughout my life so I think I will be fine, but the seclusion and danger of being at sea will certainly be tough.

Amy Willerton with her Skipper Ash Skett and Robin Knox-Johnston. Amy Willerton PR

YOU ARE BEST KNOWN AS A MODEL. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE CLIPPER RACE? It was a totally random connection. I have been writing for Huffington Post and wanted to take on a challenge to write about for 2016 (I try to take on one crazy adventure each year). I was researching which challenge to do next when the race was mentioned to me. It seemed to fit the bill, but before committing to it I went to Gosport to talk to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who is Chairman of the Clipper Race and the skipper I would be racing with, Ash Skett on Garmin. Hearing about their experiences and love of ocean racing really appealed to my adventurous nature. I could not turn down the opportunity.

Image: onEdition

WHAT TRAINING/PREPARATION HAVE YOU HAD FOR THE RACE?

I spent four weeks in Sydney completing the Clipper Race training – but apart from that I am completely new to sailing. I do a lot of weights and strength/ conditioning training, which I have always loved, but I am now specifically targeting areas that will help me be physically prepared to take on the race. It will certainly benefit me and help me to cope with the energy needed to compete because, as I have learned, sailing a 70ft yacht is a physical work out in itself!

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES TO BE?

Sticking to the routine. I am a self-employed freedom seeker and the four-hour on/off watch system on board the Clipper Race is completely alien to me.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT THE RACE? I think connecting with the rest of the crew and learning to be part of a team, as I have always been naturally reclusive outside of work so hopefully this will help me get better at that.

RETuRN TO AN ISLAND PARADISE

A relaxing break and time for a spot of watersports

having sailed the Ionian frequently, Chris Satchwell and his family opted for an early summer bareboat charter with Sunsail to visit favourite places and find new ones.

DINNER AT VASILIKI An impressive sight – a Sunsail fleet of Cats

F

rom touchdown at the reassuringly Greek Preveza Airport on the mainland we were glad to be back in the sailing paradise that is the Ionian. No matter how many times we pass this way for regular Sunsail holidays the pleasure is never diluted. Instead of turning left for the old Vounaki base, we turned right and quickly concluded that the shift to the new base at Levkas was a smart move. Located in the heart of Levkas Town with shops, tavernas and restaurants aplenty just moments away, arrival at the marina means the holiday had begun.

IONIAN ISLANDS

The Ionian islands, full of history, seem to have escaped signs of austerity, and wonderful Greek produce at reasonable prices fills the shops. The islands are not famous for their winds but offer an endless choice of bays, islands and ports. Most are easy to navigate and generally there is space for everyone even with a Cat the width of

two monohulls. There were four people in our group and we opted for a Sunsail 444 Catamaran, which is spacious with welcome home comforts including air conditioning, an effective freezer and four en suite heads On the first morning we headed south, anchored for Greek salad, local cheese and bread in the bay of Rhonda, before motor sailing to Sivota. The quay at the fishing village was busy but a friendly wave from Yiannis at the Delphina Taverna meant a suitable space was quickly identified and locals caught our lines. Sivota offers plenty of choice and we opted for dinner at Delphina which was excellent, especially the fresh fish caught daily by the owner. We had always enjoyed Fiscado on Kefalonia, so headed off early to try to secure a berth. Even at 11am this proved impossible with a large flotilla leaving and yacht after yacht arriving. We decided to head down the coast to Agia Euphamia. Unusually, there is a harbour master. He can be contacted by radio but he is also quickly identified

Next stop was Vasiliki on the south of Lefkas island. Work to build sea walls is obvious but appears to be developing slowly, even by Greek standards. There was plenty of space on the inner town quay. Depth is limited but sufficient for our big Cat. Our berth had beautiful views in all directions and we watched windsurfing thrill-seekers from the water sports centre in the bay. Ashore, a dinner of locally caught fish, followed by a cocktail was topped off by bumping into someone from our village on a windsurfing holiday. Our catamaran boasted a huge cockpit and we found playing cards, with a customary Metaxa a fine way to end our evenings.

MEETING FRIENDS

We had arranged to meet friends who had coincidentally booked a similar Cat for the same week. They had eight on board and opted to join a Sunsail Flotilla. We arranged to meet on their free sailing day in Little Vathi. Crossing towards Meganissi we discovered a minor technical issue with one of the heads. We called Sunsail Base. Within what felt like minutes a RIB arrived with Rachel and Trev on board. The problem was quickly identified and fixed.

What a difference it makes having the back-up of a well-established company. Arriving at Little Vathi it was clear the small town quay was full so we called Odessea Marina, a private company that manages the majority of the quay in this lovely little port. All marina berths were occupied or pre-booked so they offered space on the outer wall. We were quoted 85 Euros for the night. Considering the height of the wall and the expense, we decided to head to an old favourite, Spartahori in the next bay. We moored easily on a pontoon with Lazy Lines and help from the shore and were shortly joined by our friends. There is an unwritten rule that if you use the pontoon you eat at the owner’s Taverna. The 12 of us enjoyed probably the best meat and fish we had on our whole trip. It was slightly more expensive but we had free use of berth, shore power and showers.

BACK TO REALITY

In the morning we waved off our friends as they headed to their flotilla BBQ and returned to Sivota for our penultimate night.

On our final day we stopped for a swim at Nikiana bay where we had holidayed with Sunsail nearly 25 years ago. Three dolphins danced around nearby on our passage to Levkas. We were met by the Sunsail team to take our lines and gently drifted side-to on the marina pontoon. We entertained our friends with Pimms and canapés on board before another delicious evening meal and enjoying European Cup football at a bar on the marina. Next morning we left our boat and spent a pleasant few hours day dreaming about our Odyssey by the pool waiting for our transfer to the airport… and reality. The rise of KITESURFINg All at Sea looks at the not so new sport of kitesurfing and the record-breaking achievements at the 2016 Virgin Kitesurfing Armada. Report: Liz Brookes

T

he 2016 Virgin Kitesurfing Armada kicked off on what can only be described as a soggy day with sprinkles of thunder and lightning for good measure. However the weather was not going to dampen the spirits of the organisers, exhibitors, pro riders or the camping fraternity who were sporting wellies, drinking tea and upholding that stoic British festival spirit with vigour. Over 50 banner flags lined the main entrance to the event and smells of organic coffee filled the air. This is a small festival with a cool kitesurfing undertone. Even the burger van was a classic split screen camper. The weekend boasted top kitesurfing personalities, exhibitors’ tents, entertainment and a large camping area. Events were planned to suit all age ranges and every demographic, from cocktails and live bands to face painting and the Volvo family zone.

WELCOME BRANSON

Of course, the main draw for most attendees is the kitesurfing. Dan Charlish, Founder and Event Director, talks with pride when discussing the largest kitesurfing event in the UK. It all started when Dan’s other interest - a youth charity called Snow Camp needed to raise funds:

“When we first kicked off the Armada it was completely supported by volunteers. 318 kiters participated in the first year. The kiters left Hayling to kitesurf the 43 miles to Brighton in high winds with 35 support RIBS and 60 volunteers – soon after that Branson approached the event to become a sponsor and the festival is now in its fourth year.” A massive charity fundraiser, VKSA has raised over £160,000 and brings local businesses and councils together. Dan is happy to have the backing of one of the UK’s top entrepreneurs and wants to see the Armada grow into a kitesurfing event with a real festival feel. When asked about Branson’s (himself an avid kite surfer) involvement in the festival, Dan said: “You just cannot beat the PR – He [Branson] tweeted about the Armada today and got 7.2 million followers!” One of the aims of this year’s Armada was to break a world record for the amount of kitesurfers on the water in any given moment. In dramatic style, with one rider following the next in one minute intervals, it took three-and-a-half hours for the parade to complete, egged on by the power of social media with more and more kiters showing up by the hour. The result was announced by Official Adjudicator for the GUINESS BOOK OF RECORDS ™, Sophia Greenacre, who declared that, with 423 kitesurfers

Kitemaking in the Volvo Family Zone at the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada

completing the course, the VKSA had indeed achieved a new world record.

CHAMPION KITESURFER

Through the buzz and rain emerges Lewis Crathern, the UK’s title winning Kite surfer. Lewis boasts a string of titles from 2005 – 2015, notably British Kitesurfing champion 2006, 2007, 2008 and probably best known to the non- kitesurfing crowd for jumping Brighton pier in 2010. Lewis just has it – that air of confidence and success. He believes in himself and believes in his sport. Despite a recent injury, Lewis is adamant about the safety of the sport. This is not a new sport anymore; it started in the UK in 2000 and Lewis was there at the beginning. He believes it is safer now than ever. “It is like any sport – if you push the boundaries it becomes more dangerous. Kitesurfing and kitesurfers are very safe and respectful of their sport and their surroundings.” Hundreds of people take up kitesurfing every year and there are numerous centres along the South Coast that can help you learn in a safe and controlled way. Kiteworld magazine is a good place to look if you already kitesurf or are contemplating the sport. Whatever your level, wherever and however you ride, this

publication can fuel and develop your kitesurfing enjoyment. Inspirational stories, destination guides, as well as beautiful photography and insightful tips will help to launch or improve your enjoyment of the sport.

IN NEED OF REPAIRS

In the unlikely event that you do find yourself needing a kite repair, you can try Sail Style. Now in its tenth year and based in Hayling Island, Sail Style is a family run sail and cover maker. Simon Matthews, Director, prides himself on keeping prices low but doing the best possible job. Available for local and postal repairs, Sail Style is a good representation of a small business that does things right and enables us allweather watersports enthusiasts to get out there. As I make my exit, 50 school children come trailing past me, babbling excitedly in the pouring rain – the power of sport cannot be underestimated, and the rise and longevity of kitesurfing and this World Record Breaking Armada is a testament to that. Next month we will bring you news of Sunsail’s first-ever kiteboard flotilla, running from 5-12 November in the Bahamas. The record breakers prepare for action

t s e b s Brighton e t i b Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

ny heads n e P h t n o m This vestigate in o t x e s s u S over to lights e d y r a in l u c the of Brighton.

CALL me a spoilt Solent softie but I am not used to travelling as far east as Brighton and beyond. I know it is a buzzing town with over 800 food options (TripAdvisor) but I probably need to revisit when the sun is shining and with a happier crew. Having said that there are some great delights for foodies. The surrounding countryside is stunning as well, and I would recommend hiring a bike or taking the bus out to some of the surrounding villages nestling in those glorious green Downs. However, back to this rocking Regency City where restaurants make their first ‘outside London opening’. There is the favourite Baker & Spice and more obvious Wahaca and Franco Manca but there are some indie gems in those back streets too, so here are just a few recommendations.

BREAKFAST

Moksha on London Road. This is an independent that has been here for over eight years and is run by Ollie. His girlfriend is vegetarian and so there are some modern twists on the menu that caters for all. We had the stack of blueberry pancakes, perfect scrambled eggs on toast, but the star for both quality and price was the bacon sandwich on sour dough at £3.50 with a fried egg on top for £1. The sourdough lifts all the breakfasts, griddled crisp, adding flavour and sourced just round the corner. All ingredients are as local as possible using Sussex growers for the meat and veg.

BEST COFFEE

Compass Coffee is roasted at Littlehampton, and they have created a smooth Espresso blend called Brighton Lanes that is very easy on the pallet. Order online or try it in Brighton at Moksha, Plateau or Blackbird.

BEST BAKER

Real Patisserie, just round the corner at 43 Trafalgar Road, is packed with more breads, cakes and savoury delights. We also liked the look of Coffeetzar with its fried egg buns, but Real Patisserie’s glass counter had gleaming apricot, apple and lemon meringue tarts, as well as the afore mentioned sour dough, so we came away with bags bulging for later. I am also a big fan of afore mentioned Baker & Spice and have visited their Victoria shop many times. They do not bake here in Brighton yet, but fresh

The popular seaside resort town on the south coast well known for its busy pier, waterfront shopping, arts scene and Regency buildings.

breads and so on come down each morning from London. Find them at 40 East Street. I would have liked to try Café Plenty, which is newly opened with a cool interior and a micro bakery on-site. Visit them on Circus Parade.

LUNCH

Silo’s, on the quieter Upper Gardner Street, by-line is ‘removing unnecessary processing of food’. There is a flour mill in reception to grind flours used in their breads and t’other side of the entrance to the restaurant is a shiny, hungry, moist and a tad smelly silver box that composts up the unavoidable waste of a restaurant. You are welcome to take some of this home to the garden. We did not have time, or room, to eat here but would love to hear from those of you who have. Or there is the newly opened Franco Manca if you fancy a decent wood fired pizza at a competitive price with a sour dough base (bit of a theme here…). We liked No 4 - Gloucester Old Spot ham, mozzarella, Buffalo Ricotta and wild mushrooms at £6.70. Wine sans pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers also rocks my boat. Try it out.

The Lanes are great for a spot of shopping or a bite to eat. Image: Adam Bronkhosrt

Now that is a tasty looking burger from Coggins & Co

Real Patisserie had gleaming apricot, apple and lemon meringue tarts

COCKTAILS

Cocktail Shack, Artist Residence, 34 Regency Square. These guys are fantastic and first came to my attention in Penzance of all places. It is a groovy place to stay if you get chucked off the boat. Rum, yes, and more rum.

INFORMATION

Perfect scrambled eggs on toast at Moksha

BEST BURGER

The search continues, but top recommendations are Burger Brothers (very small seating area), Coggins & Co and Trolls Pantry in the colourful Hobgoblin Pub. Coggins & Co in Seven Dials would

be my first call as owner Andrew chooses top quality local beef from Redlands Farm in Horam, buns from our Real Patisserie and ice cream from Downs View, and the surroundings are a cut above the normal. All burgers are cooked medium and chips come triple fried in either beef dripping or organic vegetable oil. Drinking water is filtered on-site and served in lovely glass bottles – a nice touch. Try the BB burger – mushroom tapenade, Harvey’s rarebit and English mustard mayo £11.50. www.deliveroo.co.uk is available here, so choose, phone and wait peacefully on the boat. Penny’s Blog: hopshikesandbites.blogspot.co.uk

DINNER

The Salt Room, opposite West Pier, has a Josper Grill (exciting). Try to hit the pre-theatre or set lunch if you want to feel you have grabbed a bargain. They have excellent seafood and grilled meats. Pre-theatre is £15 for two courses. 64 Degrees, in the Lanes, has been awarded Michelin’s Bib Gourmand two years running and came 24th in the National Restaurant’s Top 100 last year. It has been recommended by many, so is definitely worth a punt.

BEST PUB FOR SUNDAY LUNCH There are two choices here, both about nine miles away heading deep into the beautiful Sussex Downs. First the Shepherd & Dog, in Fulking, at the foot of Devil’s Dyke. It is a cosy, attractive traditional pub with a lot going on and great food. Dates to note: ■ 15 July: Gin & Jazz ■ 26 Aug: Beer Fest To get here join National Cycle Route 2 and there is a bit of a hill near the Dyke Golf Club – 11.5 miles bike ride or 9.5 miles for the more direct walk. Or try The Half Moon at Plumpton, again about nine miles away but you can avoid Brighton itself on this route. Another delightful Sussex pub serving good food. For a shorter walk try Busby & Wilds at 9 Rock Street, Kempton. A very civilised pub in a quiet Regency back street a pleasant 20 minute walk along the waterfront from the marina. Great squid and Scotch Egg bar snacks and roasts.

Perhaps you will berth at Brighton Marina

Try the burgers at Trolls Pantry in the colourful Hobgoblin Pub

Birdham Pool Birdham, Chichester West Sussex PO20 7BG 01243 512310 info@birdhampool.co.uk www.castlemarinas.co.uk

BIRDHAM POOL MARINA Birdham was the first marina in England and contains the first ever lock specifically built for yachtsmen. Nearly 80 years later it is still as charming and picturesque as ever with wonderful views across Chichester Harbour and towards the South Downs. Birdham Pool Marina was originally developed in the late 1930s from one of the last working tidal mill pools. In fact the old mill building still stands next to the lock adding to its chocolate box feel. The marina lies only five miles away from the cathedral city of Chichester

but in terms of maritime history and tranquility it feels like it’s in another world. Boating folk choose Birdham not only for its traditional quaintness and seclusion but its location in the sheltered waters of Chichester Harbour.

BERTHING & STORAGE

Visitors to Birdham Pool will find it is unlike many other modern marinas along the South Coast. There are 265 berths in a combination of pontoon and pile berths plus a 16.5m lock that allows access up to three-and-ahalf hours either side of high water. Along with the fully equipped boatyard with wooden boat restorers, GRP repairers and engineers onsite there is always something of interest for boat enthusiasts to watch as well as soaking up the wonderful atmosphere. This month Birdham hosts the annual Classic Boat Festival over the weekend of 9 - 10 July.

ACCESS

Birdham welcomes visiting boats, but as the marina is often full it is always a good idea to ring the lock keeper to check there is space.

By water from Chichester Harbour the access channel to Birdham Pool is entered at the Birdham green beacon (Fl(4)G.10s) which also serves as a tide gauge. In general boats of 1.5m draft will be restricted to 3.5 hours either side of HW Portsmouth. The channel leading to the lock is marked by six green posts the last five of which need to be left very close on your starboard side. Call “Birdham Pool” on VHF channel 80 or the lock keeper on 01243 511482 or 07831 466815 to get advice on the approach. The lock is staffed from 0600 to 2200 during the summer months and from 0700 to 1800 in the winter. By land the marina is found by taking the A286 towards Wittering from the A27 and then turn right onto Church Lane at Birdham and right into Court Barn Lane. For Sat Nav use PO20 7BG.

SHORESIDE FACILITIES

RECOMMENDATIONS

Facilities include water and electricity, petrol and diesel plus showers/toilets/ launderette, waste recycling and full shipyard services, lift out and storage ashore. However there are some changes afoot. Owners of Birdham Pool, Castle Marinas Ltd are currently investing in some improvements to the land side of Birdham. The work has already started and will enhance the lifting and storage of boats and includes the replacement of the largest boat shed to offer better tenant facilities and a smart new marina office. Works have been carefully planned for minimum disruption to Birdham’s users and also to be sympathetic to the rustic charm that is Birdham.

CRUISING

EVEN when the weather isn’t great Chichester Harbour offers lots of sailing possibilities and creeks to explore. For day sailers the Harbour entrance and the popular East Head are an easy hours cruise from Birdham. Once out of the Habour, the Isle of Wight, Solent and Portsmouth Harbour

Staff and customers alike are extremely proud and enthusiastic about Birdham. In a recent survey 100% of Birdham customers said they would recommend Birdham Pool to a friend. This gives some indication of just how proud and enthusiastic both customers and the staff are about their marina. “I have been sailing in Chichester Harbour for most of my life, but I still find new things to see there. Plus in this age of rushing, I love that we still have to wait for nature and the tides. Locking in and out at Birdham is, for me, all part of the sailing experience. And I love to watch other boats coming in and out too when I am tinkering on my boat.” Mr. Watts “I want to put into writing how very pleasant the last few months in Birdham have been. I would like to say thank you to everyone, to the manager, to the office staff and to the lads in the yard. I think the place is well run and the positive attitude from everyone there is a breath of fresh air. Dave Kirk from boat Amanda Louise

are accessible for weekend sailing or France or the West Country for those with more time and favourable weather.

THINGS TO DO

Away from the boat, there are many walkways and cycle routes. Nearby, Salterns Way is a beautiful off road

route into the historical Cathedral City of Chichester which is about five miles away. For food The Boat House and Chichester Yacht Club are a pleasant walk away….. Also within a short drive is the wonderful sandy beach at West Wittering.

Marina Manager John Hiltunen and his team love the marina as much as their customers and can help with further information. Birdham Pool Marina is part of Castle Marinas Ltd. Castle Marinas Ltd owns and operates seven marinas. Coastal Marinas at Birdham Pool and Royal Clarence in Gosport. Inland Marinas at Buckden, Kings Bromley, Nottingham, Ventnor and Wigrams Turn.

HASLAR SAYS THANK YOU IN STYLE ON Saturday 14 May, 250 Haslar berth holders got together on the lawn adjacent to the marina office to enjoy an evening hosted by the Haslar Crew. Guests were treated to a complimentary bar, paella and live music, which seemed to be the perfect mix to make for a fantastic evening’s entertainment. The night was to say ‘thank you’ to Haslar customers but was also a great opportunity

to raise money for charity. This year Haslar berth holders helped to raise £2,478 which will be split between The Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (who provide invaluable safety services in and outside of the Solent), The Gosport Sea Cadets (which provide a great channel to get local kids onto the water) and The Little Briggs (who introduce disadvantaged kids to an entirely new environment at sea).

LARGS REGATTA WEEK HAS NEW SPONSOR THE organising committee of Largs Regatta Week has announced a new title sponsorship from Caledonian MacBrayne. Under the new sponsorship, Scotland’s premier regatta will now be known as ‘Largs Regatta Week sponsored by CalMac Ferries Ltd’. The 2016 regatta runs from 27 August to 4 September at Largs Yacht Haven. The regatta has been going strong for 25 years and it is the only event in Scotland where both keelboats and dinghies race on the same race course – around the buoys and also around the islands. It also incorporates the Firth of Clyde Coastal Rowing Club annual regatta, and a new event for 2016, the RNLI fundraising ceilidh on Friday 26 August. Alasdair Henderson, Head of Harbours for CalMac, said: “As the Operators of Largs Harbour we are delighted to have been able to step in and provide short term support to this prestigious event, especially since much of the activity will take place close to or in our harbour areas and approaches. We are keen to promote leisure use of our harbours and this is an ideal event to do just that.” Carolyn Elder, Director of Largs Yacht Haven and Largs Regatta Week committee said: “The financial support from CalMac comes at a perfect time as we are planning the detail of the 2016 Week. We are proud to be part of the Regatta and welcome sailors old and new to the marina. And of course raising money for the RNLI as part of the competition is an added bonus. We look forward to

AS a longstanding service partner of Oyster Yachts, Fox’s Marina and Boatyard has been appointed as a Service Partner for the forthcoming Oyster World Rally, which sets sail from Antigua in January 2017. Following Fox’s recent presentation and instructional seminar for Oyster owners taking part in the rally, which covered the basics of practical rigging maintenance at sea, splicing and rope work, the experienced team from Fox’s Rigging will be on hand at key stopovers to provide complimentary rig inspections and advice for the Oyster World Rally fleet as they sail around the world. Fox’s Managing Director, Will TaylorJones, said: “Fox’s is proud to be part of the Oyster World Rally support team. Fox’s has been closely involved with Oyster Yachts for over 30 years, with the majority of the Oyster yachts taking part in this event and the

first Oyster World Rally having been commissioned at Fox’s and rigged by the Fox’s Rigging team. Fox’s has carried out a number of large refits on various Oyster yachts over the years, several of which have been in preparation for extensive blue water cruising.” Sarah Harmer, Oyster’s World Rally Event Manager, commented: “We are delighted to have Fox’s continued support for the Oyster World Rally; the Fox’s team were fantastic over the seminar weekend and it will be reassuring for our owners to have the benefit of a professional rig inspection before they set out from Antigua and after each long ocean passage.“ With 33 Oyster yachts, ranging from an Oyster 45 to the new Oyster 885, set to take part, this second Oyster Rally follows the hugely successful inaugural Oyster World Rally, which took place from January 2013 to April 2014.

MED MOORING GETTING IT RIGHT WHEN BERTHING IN THE MED

43

THE Masterclass

Med mooring is the art of berthing stern or bow on typical in Mediterranean ports. The RYA spoke to Mark Sanders, owner of Algarve-based RYA Training Centre Learn2Sail, to get his tips for new skippers facing this challenge for the first time. you can lose control easily. Get used to judging how much power is needed to overcome the elements and factor all this into manoeuvring.

BOW OR STERN FIRST?

Stern first usually gives easier access on and off the boat, but be careful you do not damage your rudder. Approaching bow on can help if you do not know the water depth, as your drives will stay in the deepest water. Leave plenty of time and distance for your run up. Assuming stern first mooring, fender up both sides and across the transom, and have stern lines rigged outside the push pit and guard rails, coiled ready to be stepped off with or passed ashore if there is help available. Are you using the anchor to hold the bow or are lazy lines available? Do not use your anchor if there are lazy lines because your anchor will foul the mother chain. IF you are contemplating a Med mooring on a flotilla or bareboat for the first time this summer it is crucial to get used to the boat, especially driving her backwards (astern). In reverse prop kick initially takes the stern one way or the other so discover

early on (and in plenty of space) what the boat’s prop kick is and by how much. It is important to hold the wheel with two hands driving astern as the water is reversed across your rudder so is no longer balanced and

USING THE ANCHOR

As you approach your mooring, note any crosswinds that could affect the manoeuvre. Settle in to driving astern and allow for the prop kick before going for reverse gear. If she kicks 20 degrees to port initially, turn the boat

20 degrees to port as you come to a stop; the two will cancel each other out. Reverse at sufficient speed to overcome any crosswinds. Communication is critical between the skipper and anchor party at the foredeck. Contending with lots of engine and anchor chain noise, look at the person you are talking to so your voice carries. If you have enough crew, station someone at the shoulder near the shrouds to relay communications. About three boat lengths out give the order to let go on the anchor, preferably on a gravity drop with the clutch brake open, but controlled by closing off the brake as needed. This will help hold the bow so you can reverse onto the dock. Within half a boat length from the dock apply the brake to the windlass and remove the brake handle. Let the chain start taking the weight but be prepared to use forward power if you are closing the dock too fast.

When close enough, pass your stern lines ashore and secure quickly. Adjust the chain to take a small amount of weight to keep the boat in position and fine tune accordingly.

TIPS ON LAZY LINES

Same as above but without the anchor… Have the crew standby with gloves and boat hook to grab the line off the dock and run it forward to the bow before pulling in to hold the boat securely. Lazy lines are usually filthy and covered in marine life, including razorsharp barnacles, so try to run the lazy line on the boat hook to protect your hands. And that is it; now await the arrival of that iced cold beer from the nearby taverna and graciously accept the praise for berthing so professionally. Read more about boat handling in the RYA Day Skipper Handbook Sail or RYA Day Skipper Handbook Power. www.rya.org.uk/shop

PROPER JOB St Austell’s Proper Job, a forerunner for ‘modern IPAs’ and sometimes referred to as ‘American-

FU

Office address The Binnacle, 33 Victoria Avenue

WHEN cruising in the southern extremity of the UK’s southwest coast, an enthusiastic member of my local sailing club discovered three Cornish cream liqueurs and passed them on to me as highly recommended. ‘Nevek’ is the Cornish word for ‘heavenly’ and Cornish Nevek is a delicious chocolate and cream liqueur, while Cornish Lust is strawberry and cream and Cornish Dream features fudge and cream, all made from a wine base and a ‘little bit of Cornish magic’. They are 15 per cent abv and on their own are light refreshing drinks. Or they can be served chilled over ice or with ice cream, a neat twist on a Cornish cream tea with a bit of oomph. Good for cockpit sundowners or picnics on the beach. They come from the Cornish Cream company of St Ives and Newquay, a family concern set up in 1968. Not a headliner in the local pubs but will be found in the company’s own shops, tearooms and cafés throughout the county or on www.cornishcream.com. Expect to pay £17 for a 70cle bottle or £9.99 for a pack of all three in elegant ship’s decanter-shaped 10cl miniatures. The company also makes a range of other Cornish novelties including Haymakers Scrumpy, Smugglers Scrumpy Rumpy and Vintage Scrumpy

TRIBUTE PALE ALE St Austell Brewery was founded in 1851 by Cornishman Walter Hicks and remains an independent, family-owned business offering a wide range of award-winning beers and operating an estate of 170 pubs, inns and hotels. Its Tribute Pale Ale started out as Daylight Robbery, brewed as a novelty for the 1999 eclipse of the sun. It proved so popular it was renamed Tribute and is now the company’s best-selling beer with sales and distribution steadily spreading outside its native Cornwall to supermarkets and on draught to pubs in the greater London area and all counties on the way. It is a traditional pale ale, 4.5 per cent and, brewed with Cornish Marris Otter pale malt, a light amber colour with a hint of orange zest on the palate. The ale is excellent enough to be selected by British Airways as its exclusive ale on long haul and Club Europe flights and lounges around the world as part of BA’s plan to showcase a variety of authentic regional products drawn from the whole of the UK. James Staughton, managing director of St Austell Brewery, said: “Tribute Cornish Pale Ale has experienced huge success over recent years. It is testament to the quality and flavour and Cornish identity of Tribute to be chosen as the only ale served on BA flights. This will introduce the brand to over 20 countries.”

style’, is also gaining popularity and distribution in pubs where the tap is often fitted alongside the Tribute tap. Proper Job is an authentic IPA brewed with Cornish spring water, malt made from Cornishgrown Maris Otter Pale barley and imported American hops, packed full of pineapple and citrus fruit flavours giving it a fine crisp bitter finish. Interestingly, the draught version is at 4.5 per cent and the bottled version in the shops a meaty 5.5 per cent. As for wine, The Camel Valley winery, near Rock, Cornwall, produces excellent red, white and an especially good sparkling white that often wins prizes ahead of ‘real’ Champagnes. Not cheap, but it is fun to drink the local stuff when you are there.

as well as Cornish Sunset, an 8.3 per cent sparkling bubbly made with the juice of fresh strawberries.

Congratulations to Rob Hewlett who won All at Sea’s Raymarine Quantum Wireless CHIRP Radar competition in the April issue. Rob said: “Wow! What a fantastic prize. I did not believe it when I received notification I had won the Raymarine Quantum Radar unit. This is perfect for my yacht Blue Horizon. Power drain is very low for a radar device and the added security this will give me when I make those trips across to France is priceless, plus it works

Thank you All at Sea and Raymarine for a fantastic addition to my onboard electronics.” You are very welcome Rob, and be sure to turn to page 15 to enter this month’s great competition to win a Standard Horizon Handheld DSC VHF transceiver.
