Now in its 46th year, the Solitaire du Figaro is known as the unofficial world championships of solo offshore racing. on 31 May the sailors set off to race thousands of miles between five European host venue ports: Bordeaux, Sanxenxo, La Cornouaille, Torbay and Dieppe. Late on 17 June, into the early hours of 18 June, they will race into Torbay for the first time in race history, docking an impressive fleet of Figaro Bénéteau IIs (identical 33ft boats made for solo sailing) in Torquay Harbour. By the time they reach Berry Head, the competitors will have already raced 1,585 miles, with 600 miles to go. weather beaten, salt encrusted, sick with tiredness and ravenous with hunger, this year you can be there to greet them.

Liverpool’s Queens

The Solitaire du Figaro Race Village will have five days of fun from food experiences to local live music, try sailing with the Royal Torbay Yacht Club and British Disabled Sailing Association and climbing walls. There will also be expert talks for sailing enthusiasts, public fireworks and a Pro-Am race in the Bay. After a week of Race Village fun on the sea and the shore, Leg 4 of the Solitaire du Figaro - Eric Bompard Cachemire will start from Torbay on 21 June. Cheer the skippers out of Torquay Harbour and watch them begin their final race to France from the Bay. In the British field, Nick Cherry (Redshift) and Henry Bomby (Rockfish Red) are both preparing to race their fourth Solitaire du Figaro. Nick has already had a good competitive season so far, finishing top ten in the Solo Basse Normandie, and performing well in the coastal and offshore elements of the Solo Maître Coq. other strong British competitors are Jack Bouttell (GAC Concise) and Sam Matson (Chatham) along with Alan Roberts (Magma Structures), plus there are three new British Rookie competitors from the Artemis offshore Academy: Robin Elsey, Rob Bunce and Andrew Baker. www.lasolitaireuk.com #UKStopover #Torbay

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2015

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde

IT seems like five minutes ago that the clocks were changing and we were all celebrating the lighter evenings but, and I hate to remind you of this, soon the evenings will start getting darker again. The longest day is 21 June, so make sure you are making the most of the evenings, even if they have been fairly chilly and damp so far (although sailors should be used to being cold and wet). June 21 is also important for another more significant reason. It is Father’s Day. Stuck for ideas? Check out the Shorestyle pages and, of course, In The Drink for some inspiration. After all, what dad doesn’t like to open gift wrap and find their favourite tipple inside. I have the double dilemma of my dad’s birthday being at the same time as Father’s Day. Do I go for a double (drink that is) or mix it up with some new kit? There have been some tempting jackets in the All at Sea kit pages in recent months. Whatever you decide to do or buy, make sure you use the longest day to its full advantage and treat your dad or get your children to spoil you – well into the evening! Perhaps some dads will be wearing their new gear and using new kit at this year’s J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, which takes place just a week after Father’s Day. As I write this entries are just shy of the 1100 mark, but this will reach the 1700 mark by the end of June. For all the information about this year’s race turn to page 22 for our preview guide to this hugely popular

event. If you are taking part we would love to see your photos and hear how you get on. One person taking part in the Round the Island Race is All at Sea’s newest occasional columnist, Lizzy Foreman. This inspirational 24-year-old sailor will be sharing the highs and lows of her sailing life as she works towards September’s Mini Transat, a biennial solo transatlantic yacht race covering over 4000 miles. Did you take part in May’s Push The Boat Out? This RYA initiative gave people the opportunity to experience sailing and windsurfing at ‘have a go’ taster sessions at sailing clubs and centres around the country. Last year it was fantastic that 24,000 people took part, and we look forward to seeing this year’s numbers. If you have recently got the sailing bug, or already love all things boating, there are an incredible number of events taking place on and off the water throughout the summer. We have put together a special events guide on page 26. We are very lucky to have so many amazing shows, festivals, races and so on to choose from and apologies if we have not included yours. We also have an events listing online at our new look website, so send your events to editor@ allatsea.co.uk and we will add them. In the meantime have a wonderful June whether you are at the Northern Boat Show, Beale Park Thames Boat Show, Solitaire du Figaro, The J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race… you get the idea! editor@allatsea.co.uk

LITTLE SHIPS SET SAIL

MORE than 50 Little Ships made the journey from Ramsgate to Dunkirk at the end of May to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuation, codenamed Operation Dynamo - which is often seen as a turning point of World War II.

Excitement Builds for Round the Island Race SEE OUR RACEN PREVIEW O PAGE 22

AS the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race entries go over the 1,100 mark, the Race Management team at the Island Sailing Club have shared some more of the big names who will be lining up for the Race action. Haven Knox-Johnston will compete with HKJ Firestarter (GBR 8560R) and HKJ Enigma (GBR4365T), whilst Old Pulteney are racing Kurketrekker (GBR3779L), the Beneteau Oceanis 34. Henri Lloyd will have crew and guests competing on CV Henri Lloyd (GBR9351T), a Clipper 68. Raymarine are also hinting at bringing a team boat. The Race welcomes newcomers and old-timers in equal measure. New faces in 2015 will include British Olympic Equestrian sportswoman Mary King MBE on John Jackett’s New Dawn of Hythe (GBR1314R). Mary has represented Great Britain at six Olympics from 1992 – 2012, winning two silver and one bronze medal in team

eventing and will no doubt enter this race with the same winning mentality. The Big Class yacht, classic schooner Eleonora, is back to race for the first time since being co-skippered by Sir Ben Ainslie in 2012 just prior to him securing his fourth Olympic Gold medal in Weymouth. Eleonora is an exact replica of the schooner Westward that was launched in 1910 and became one of the best-known racing schooners in the world. Eleonora will be going on to participate in the prestigious Bicentenary International Regatta in Cowes during July. Another exquisite-looking yacht entering the Race for the first time is the 19M William Fife Mariquita. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful classic yachts sailing today, Mariquita was part of the infamous ‘Great 19s’ close and highly competitive fleet that travelled far and wide during the early 1900s.

But the key competitors are the thousands of amateur sailors, many of whom race just once a year in the Round the Island Race. It is the fourth biggest participatory sports event in Britain after the London Marathon and the Great North and South runs. Participants raise thousands for charity each year. If you are looking for crew or are interested in competing on someone else’s boat in the Race, the official website has a very useful Crewsearch Forum. Come what may, the Raymarine Weather Briefing with Race meteorologist Chris Tibbs will take place as usual at the Island Sailing Club at 1800hrs on 26 June. Turn to page 21 to read Chris’ Expert Forum. Standard entry remains open until midnight on 13 June. http://rtir.me/entries www.roundtheisland.org.uk @RoundtheIsland

BUSINESSMAN, Richard Colton, has bequeathed the proceeds of two of the world’s most prized Ferraris to the RNLI, in what could become the largest gift the charity has ever received. Richard Colton, who died earlier this year, was said to be

‘nervous’ of the sea. The 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB is one of only 167 to come off the production line and could raise £8 million at auction while the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 1967 could raise up to £2 million. They will be sold by H&H Classics on 14 October

at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Cambridge. The donation is intended to fund a new lifeboat for the charity’s Northamptonshire branch, to be named Richard and Caroline Colton after its benefactor and his late wife.

Golden aGe of solo sailinG To mark the 50th anniversary of the first solo non-stop circumnavigation under sail achieved by Sir Robin KnoxJohnston during the 1968/9 Sunday Times Golden Globe Yacht Race, a new Golden Globe Race is to set sail from Falmouth on 14 June, 2018. This is the same day that Knox-Johnston set out on his epic voyage 50 years previously. Entrants must use the same type of yachts and equipment that were available to Sir Robin in the first race. That means sailing without modern technology or benefit of satellite based navigation aids. The 2018 Golden Globe Race is very simple. Depart from Falmouth, sail solo, non-stop around the world via the five Great Capes and return to Falmouth. Competitors must sail in production boats between 32ft and 36ft overall designed prior to 1988 with a full-length keel with rudder attached to their trailing edge, similar in concept to Knox-Johnston’s Suhaili. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said: “I’m a great believer in the freedom of the individual. You can enter this race in an ordinary seaworthy boat and know that success will be down to personal drive and determination, and not the biggest budget. “I intend to be at the start with Suhaili to celebrate this anniversary and expect to be joined by two other yachts that competed in the original Sunday Times Race.” A prize of £75,000 has been allocated for the 2018 race, and all who finish before 15:25hrs on 22 April 2019 - the anniversary of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s finish - will receive a Suhaili trophy and a refund of their entry fee. www.goldengloberace.com

Solent powerboat crash SIMon Dredge, the teenage son of a champion powerboat racer was said to be “stable and improving” after the high performance prototype boat he was on crashed in the Solent. He was part of a four-man professional crew, which included his father, Peter Dredge, a former RYA Powerboat Racing Manager, past committee member and current powerboat racer. Also on board were Simon WoodPower, a former RYA Powerboat Racing committee chairman and current powerboat racer and Lee Hurst, an engineer from Ross Marine.

“Peter Dredge and Simon WoodPower are both highly regarded within the powerboat racing community and both are extremely knowledgeable and experienced in this type of craft,” commented Jeni Jelf, RYA Powerboat Racing Manager. The incident was not in conjunction with any RYA activity or event. Hampshire Constabulary said it appeared the £1 million 40ft Vector V40R powerboat “lost control” before colliding with the Hamble Point cardinal mark at the entrance to the Hamble River. Vector World said the boat had been on its first test run when it overturned.

NEWS IN BRIEF MAROONED CRUISER

Cowes lifeboat had a rather messy rescue when they had a late night call to assist a small motor-cruiser marooned in oozing mud, with a heavily pregnant woman and four small children among the seven occupants. Two of the lifeboat crew, Graham Creagh and Peter Murphy-Latham, had to negotiate waist-high mud to reach the motor cruiser, which was stranded in the River Medina, north of the Folly. Apparently having no VHF radio aboard the cruiser, the crew had alerted Solent coastguards to their plight by mobile phone. It was also found that none of the occupants were wearing lifejackets.

Students now have access to some of the most up-todate equipment available on the market, supplied through Mylor Yacht Harbour, including inboard and outboard engines. www.falmouthmarineschool.ac.uk

THE tenth edition of the biennial Clipper Round the World Yacht Race sets sail from London on 30 August. Hundreds of amateur sailors now know which team and professional skipper they will be sailing with in this, the world’s longest ocean race. For the first time there will be two female skippers in the race, Wendy Tuck from Australia and Diane Reid from Canada. The organisers provide 12 identically matched 70-foot yachts, that made their debut to the race in 2013, and each team is allocated to avoid any one crew having an unfair advantage. Clipper Race crew, who will spend up to eleven months sailing the world’s most challenging oceans, came from all over the world to Portsmouth for the announcement.

The 12 teams were addressed by Clipper Race founder and Chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. He said afterwards: “This is where final preparations for the race of their lives begins. Most of the crew have almost completed their training but now they can start to develop their strategies and dynamics as a team.” The Clipper Race is the only ocean race to give amateur sailors the opportunity to sail around the world and at 40,000 miles it is the longest around the planet. Many are complete novices before embarking on their extensive training and over 600 international crew will sail one or more of eight legs around the world, with around a quarter achieving the ultimate sailing experience of a full circumnavigation. www.clipperroundtheworld.com

Matthew Barraud, director of Mórvargh Sailing Project, with Mark Brimacombe, Manager of Sutton Harbour Marina, on board the Helen Mary R berthed in Sutton Harbour in Plymouth THE Mórvargh Sailing Project which maintains a 57ft tall ship called the Helen Mary R needs to raise £12,000 to replace the rigging and renew safety equipment before the ship can set sail again. The ship has been used for sail training trips for young people aged between 14 and 25, who learn about leadership, resourcefulness and teamwork. The social enterprise has helped to inspire more than 5,000 young people but urgent repairs meant all operations had to be suspended in 2013 and some

voyages cancelled. Mórvargh team. Sutton Harbour Marina has pledged to support the project and help with fundraising activities, in addition to providing the Helen Mary R with free berthing at the marina in Plymouth. Matthew Barraud, director of Mórvargh Sailing Project, said: “So far, we have managed to raise £7,000, and we’d love to hear from any other local organisations or businesses able to help us to reach our total.” matt@morvargh-sailing.co.uk www.suttonharbourmarina.com

Andrew Simpson helps lucky 13 sailing projects THE Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is to give grants totalling £71,475 to 13 not-for-profit sailing projects in South Africa, Bermuda, Scotland and England. The grants are the first of the Charity’s formal grant giving process, which opened in January 2015. One of the successful applicants is the Garden Route Sailing Academy, who have set up a project with Ridgeview Primary School and Sao Bra High in Mossel Bay, South Africa. The project provides children from a local township with transport to and from Mossel Bay, regular sailing sessions,

a warm shower and a hot meal. The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation committee in Bermuda will be working to deliver the Waterwise schools sailing initiative. This is an educational based schools sailing programme that adopts the STEM curriculum - science, technology, engineering and maths. A second round of grant giving will be announced over the next few months and once again will be open to all not for profit sailing projects and community sailing programmes worldwide. www.andrewsimpsonfoundation.co.uk twitter.com/andrewsimpsonsa

GRAHAM and Lorraine Male presented five kayaks complete with paddles and buoyancy aids to Hampshire’s QE2 Activity Centre in memory of their son James who lost his life when the yacht Cheeki Rafiki foundered mid-Atlantic last May. His parents wanted to do something to enable others to enjoy the activities that James loved so much, so they approached the centre and asked how they could help. QE2 Activity Centre provides activity opportunities for adults and children with disabilities. As well as shore-based activities such as archery, ropes course and indoor climbing the Centre offers water-based activities on the Hamble

River. www.qe2activitycentre.co.uk In further news relating to the Cheeki Rafiki incident, the report into MAIB’s investigation of loss of the yacht and its four crew while on passage from Antigua to Southampton has been published. The boat may have been weakened by previous groundings and subsequent repairs according to the MAIB report. MAIB said the cause remained “a matter of some speculation” in the absence of survivors and material evidence. The report concluded that “Cheeki Rafiki capsized and inverted following a detachment of its keel”. Read the report at: http://bit.ly/cheekirafikireport

RECORD APPRENTICES

The cruiser classes at Cowes Week offer an increasingly popular introduction into racing at the regatta as an alternative to the core IRC classes that typically consist of optimised raceboats. The cruiser fleets are a great way to enjoy all the benefits of competing in Cowes Week without needing to spend undue time and money on modifying a boat for racing. You don’t even need to have a spinnaker. While the emphasis is firmly on friendly competition, there are some good sailors

in this fleet and winning remains a big challenge. nevertheless, competitors in the cruiser classes invariably find it a rewarding experience that is both enjoyable and helps sharpen their sailing skills. The cruising classes use an inexpensive and simplified, but well proven, rating system – the Cowes-based Island Sailing Club’s ISCRS. The procedure for getting a rating is simple and straightforward, with only a few measurements needed, many of which can be derived from manufacturer’s data. www.aamcowesweek.co.uk

Dongfeng Race Team (Charles Caudrelier/fRA) edged overall Volvo ocean Race leaders Abu Dhabi ocean Racing (Ian Walker/gBR) by just three minutes and 25 seconds to win Leg 6 of the race to newport. The result cuts the Ian Walker’s team’s lead over the Chinese-backed challengers to six points and makes a fantastic comeback for Caudrelier’s crew after they were forced to pull out of the previous leg to Itajaí due to a broken mast. The french skipper paid tribute to his shore crew who managed to fit a new rig in under a week in Brazil and prepare the boat for the 5,010nm leg to the US. “for this leg, the goal was to be ready in Itajaí and the (shore) crew did a fantastic job. I’d like to give them the victory,” said Caudrelier.

Abu Dhabi ocean Racing, though, made Caudrelier and his men work all the way for the win after seventeen days at sea and even threatened to overturn their lead as they passed Block Island 30nm from the finish. Caudrelier’s hopes of bouncing back for the triumph had looked in serious jeopardy just two days into the leg when the electronic water-maker, which converts sea water into drinking water, broke down. he said if his crew had not been able to repair it, they would have had to make a 12-hour stop. As the 2,800nm Leg 7 to Lisbon got underway it was Team Brunel who took the lead. The climax of the Volvo ocean race is approaching with the final in-port race taking place at gothenburg on 27 June. www.volvooceanrace.com

THIS popular family regatta, which runs from 29 August to 5 September, will offer a week of racing and shoreside activities including Bank Holiday Monday Quay Day. Exciting changes, including opening up the entry of the Town Cup to all IRC/SER yachts rated 0.890 and above, are helping to re-establish the event as one of the prime sailing events on the east coast. Breaking with tradition and opening up the entry of the Town Cup on the final Saturday to all yachts rated under IRC/SER instead of the traditional IRC Class 1 yachts, offers more competitors a chance to win the coveted prize. With the finish line set just off the Town Quay, spectators will also have the opportunity to really embrace the excitement of the racing as it unfolds in

the closing stages of the race. One of the organisers’ key objectives, to make the event accessible to all, triggered the idea to introduce additional features including motorboat and rowing gig events during the Bank Holiday weekend. To encourage the growing numbers of motorboaters on the east coast to join in, special prizes will be awarded to motorboat participants. The gig racing, which was popular last year is expected to be even more competitive with at least eighteen boats already signed up for the JCC-supported Quay Day racing. To tie in with the event’s new look a new website has been created. www.burnhamweek.com

Two rowers set out on Atlantic record attempt TWO young rowers have started an unsupported Atlantic crossing in an ocean rowing boat to raise money for charity. Tom Rainey and Lawrence Walters, who replaced Sam Coombs less than a month before the departure date due to a back injury, left New York in their ocean rowing boat Yves in an attempt to break the 55-day two-man speed record. The 23 year olds are also hoping to become the youngest pair to make the crossing from the US to the UK. As they row one of the world’s most treacherous ocean routes, Tom and Lawrence will have the back-up of an Ocean Signal SafeSea® EPIRB, two Ocean Signal rescueME PLB1s and an Ocean Signal SafeSea V100 emergency VHF. Expecting to cover around 3,800 miles before reaching Salcombe, Devon in late June, the duo are aiming to raise £250,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity, inspired by the

loss of Tom’s father, Luke, in 2012. The adventurous duo are spending at least eight weeks in Yves, which is just 23 feet long and six feet wide. They have no support yacht and are carrying all of the freeze-dried food and supplies they need for the journey. They will row in two-hour shifts and burn up to an incredible 8000 calories each per day. oceanvalour.co.uk.

WIN A BOAT

GOING SOLO FOR MINI TRANSAT

FOR the 20th edition and the second time, the Mini Transat -Îles de Guadeloupe returns to its origins with a start from Douarnenez, France. The Breton harbour will see the fleet of 84 solo sailors set off on 19 September to Lanzarote, where the race will stop before the Atlantic stage starts on 31 October. The sailors are expected to finish three weeks later in Pointe-à-Pitre to a warm Caribbean welcome. Created by Briton Bob Salmon in the late 1970s this 4,020 nautical mile race from France to the Caribbean is the longest solo race for the smallest of boats. IT is still hugely popular and so it is no surprise that the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show and Suzuki Marine are again running the Safety Boat Package competition. The prize is a new Suzuki powered Rigiflex safety boat for your club worth over £4,500. The competition runs until 31 January 2016 when the winner will be announced and invited, with their family, to the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2016. Stephen Wilson, commodore of Greenwich Yacht Club who will benefit from the latest safety boat package thanks to winner Les McKee, said: “We will be putting the new safety boat to good use at the club; supporting club activities,

accumulate a number of miles, combining 1,000nm solo-raced and 1,000nm of official Class Mini races. Only two women have qualified so far, both of them from the UK. Lizzy Foreman, who starts a new column for us on page 31, said: “I choose to sail solo for the adventure, the challenge, the freedom. Racing solo is very different, yes it can be lonely, but this makes the lead up and finish to races very special. The Mini Class is renowned for being friendly and supportive. I am really working hard for a top ten finish, being the first Brit and first woman to do so.” www.minitransat.fr / #MiniTransat2015

HISTORY IN THE MAKING WITH the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary International Regatta taking place in Cowes from 25 – 31 July, for some competing yachts, preparation is even more frantic than for others. They will be battling across the Atlantic from Newport, Rhode Island in the Transatlantic Race heading towards the southwestern tip of England, bringing

them closer to the RYS Bicentenary start line in Cowes, England. Amongst those going the extra few miles to be in the line-up, when the regatta celebrating the club’s 200 years begins, are the S&S ketch Dorade built in 1930, McCurdy & Rhodes 48′ Carina and Swan 57 Noonmark V. None of the three are strangers to long

distance racing. 2015 will see Dorade take part in another Transatlantic Race and another Fastnet Race – just as she did in 1931. From Newport to Cowes is a long way but, along with the rest of the now nearly 70 strong fleet, they will join the line-up of modern and vintage yachts on the Solent start line. www.rys.org.uk

THE British Paralympic Association has announced that London 2012 gold medallist Helena Lucas is the first athlete selected to represent ParalympicsGB at Rio 2016. This selection also gives Helena the accolade of being the first official member of either ParalympicsGB or Team GB for Rio. Lucas is used to making history, as the first GB sailor to win a Paralympic medal since the sport became a full part of the Paralympic programme in 2000 when she won gold in the 2.4mR class at London 2012. She did so as the only female sailor

amid an otherwise all-male 2.4mR fleet. The announcement is the culmination of a selection campaign in which Lucas produced consistent performances to prove her form, fending off tough competition for the place in the 2.4mR class from compatriot Megan Pascoe. She is the only GB athlete in her class to have secured podium places in the Royal Yachting Association’s four qualification events, including silver at the 2014 IFDS World Championships and bronze in the 2.4mR Open World Championships.

Great Britain has qualified a further five slots for athletes to compete in the SKUD 18 and the Sonar class at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Competition for places in those classes will continue over the coming months.

COUNTDOWN TO RIO

14 MONTHS

THE South Zone were triumphant at the 2015 RYA 29th Eric Twiname Championships. They were crowned Eric Twiname Champions as well as winning the Eric Twiname Dinghy Trophy, while the South West Zone won the Eric Twiname Windsurf Trophy. Finishing second in the final race was Sophie Johnson (East) who put together a string of top ten results to finish on equal points with Oliver Sturley (South) and Jonathan Bailey (East). On count back Sturley topped the leader board as he had the most race wins and is the 2015 Optimist Eric Twiname Champion. RS Feva sailors Louis Wright and Jamie Allen (South) read the race course with ease. Two wins and a sixth, which they discarded, leap-frogged them to the top of the results board to end the weekend as the 2015 RS Feva Eric Twiname Champions. Timothy Hartnell’s (South) double wins and two seventh place finishes were enough to make him 2015 Topper Eric Twiname Champion.

Windsurfers Izzy Adcock (South) and Ethan Moody (South) picked up a clean sweep of wins in all four of their races. Racing in the Techno 6.8 and 5.8m windsurf classes they both utilised their speed in the lighter conditions to claim the top honours. Toby Cave (East) sailing the Techno 7.8 almost had a clean sheet, three race wins and a second put him at the top of the results board. Emily-Jane Eldred (South East) was involved in some really tight battles with Rafferty Reed (South) in the 4.5m, but Eldred just got the better of him and won all but one race to win the class. The second part of the selection process for the 2015 RYA Laser 4.7 UK Junior Squad took place alongside the Championships. Milo Gill-Taylor was almost faultless winning all but one of the races across the weekend. Arthur Brown was the only other sailor to pick up a win, and finished in second behind Gill-Taylor. RYA POWERBOAT GP BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP THE Powerboat GP Championship kicked off in early May at the Lancashire GP at Carr Mill Dam in St Helen’s. 30 Powerboat Teams headed to the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club battling it out over five classes. Lancashire’s own Dave James secured the win in the T850 class, while in the F4 class Mike Pillow had a clean sweep of heat wins to take the Grand Prix title and the all-important first championship points. The GT30 Class saw the reigning GT30 champion Ben Jelf once more carving the way around the course as he secured pole position and stormed his way through the heats to take three out of three wins and his first trophy of the season. One of the fieriest battles of the weekend came from the junior racers in the GT15 Class with Thomas Mantripp and Jonathan Brewer throwing down the gauntlet to each other with Jonathan coming out the eventual winner this time. Lastly, in the F2 championship Matt Palfreyman didn’t put a turn wrong all weekend to secure three straight wins and his first National Grand Prix win. www.powerboatgp.co.uk

Many boaters will be familiar with the feeling of having cold feet, but this need not be a problem if you have a pair of Heat Holders. We are unable to verify this, but according to Heat Holders they are the warmest thermal socks in the world and seven times warmer than regular socks. Yes, we are coming into summer, but it can still get chilly afloat and you can stock up for your winter travels. Available in a choice of colours for all the family, we will be trying them out soon. Sailing then and now

Caught in the wire

The Allen Ball system at work. The risk of a dangerous entrapment is now greatly reduced. Image: Allen Bros

The trapeze has witnessed various incarnations over the years, although there is yet to be a universally accepted trapeze system despite new ideas coming to the market. One of the most exciting experiences in dinghy sailing has to be when you hook on. With your feet firmly planted on the gunwale, your body is suspended by a wire hung from the mast. The sensation is amazing as it seems that you are skimming over the surface of the water. Then, if you look down at your feet, you get the best possible view of the boat, as your vantage point gives you the ‘super selfie’ viewpoint.

The origins of trapezing are unclear, but it is believed that South Sea islanders would hang from a rope on the mast in order to shift their weight outboard. In more modern times, the first use of a proper trapeze system, whereby the user wears a harness and hooks onto a trapeze wire (as against hanging from a rope – which was tried on the Thames in the early 1930s), seems to be something of a dead heat between Charles Currey and Austin Farrar in Chichester Harbour and Auckland’s Jim Frankham. What was key about their adoption of the trapeze was a purpose built harness featuring the all-important trapeze ‘hook’. However, the first generation of trapeze harnesses shared one other issue in that they utilised what can best be described as a ‘gate latch’ arrangement on the hook. Once you were connected to the trapeze, it was not a straightforward task to unhook and release yourself.

POTENTIAL DANGERS Sailing a performance dinghy is huge fun, but it comes with the ever attendant risk of a capsize. With all the sheets and rigging, the dangers of getting entangled are very real. Given that a capsized dinghy can easily continue into full inversion, what started out as a simple unplanned swim can turn into something far more dangerous. Given how easy it is to get entangled, the numbers of serious accidents are thankfully few and far between, but there can be few trapeze crews who have never experienced a few traumatic moments. During the boom in super quick dinghies that were launched in the 1950s and 1960s, more and more classes were being equipped with trapezes and with more ‘close shaves’ being recorded, the trapeze harness would undergo something of a rethink. Out when the ‘gate latch’ arrangement, which was then replaced by a simple hook. It made both hooking on and, more importantly, unhooking, quicker and

“it was almost as dangerous to have a trapeze system that could release unexpectedly as one that would not release when required” easier. Over the next 40 years the trapeze hook became the norm, but at the same time, it was the boats themselves that were changing as a new breed of single handed dinghies, rigged with trapezes, where becoming very popular. not only was the risk of entanglement in the trapeze system with an open hook far greater, that the issue took on another dimension, as with single handers there

Skimming over the water when ‘out on the wire’ is fun, but the dangers of the trapeze hook snagging on the rigging during a capsize is very real. Image: S. Munroe

Compared to the earlier systems, a simple hook is easy to use, but can put the user at risk. Image: 505 Worlds

The first trapeze harneses were not only uncomfortable, but required the user to be dangerously ‘latched on’. Image: T Vaughan/ International 14s

is no one there to help the helm get free if things go wrong. A good example of the sort of issues that could arise occurred at an International Contender event at Weston Sailing Club. A helm had capsized, got entangled and now his boat was inverting, dragging him under. As Champion helm David Pitman sailed past, he saw what was happening and went to help. Had he not left his own boat and swum to release the trapped sailor, a very real LEFT: After many years of trying to perfect an alternative to the hook, the ‘captive ball’ connector is now freely available. Image: Allen Bros

tragedy was on the cards. The simple hook might be cheap and easy, but at the same time, with more and more crews going out on the wire, something needed to be done. The search was on for a hookless trapeze system, yet it proved to be a far harder task that expected. The difficulty was that it was almost as dangerous to have a trapeze system thatboats could release Transporting 1950s style unexpectedly (as when the crew was fully extended) as one that would not release at all when required. VIABLE ALTERNATIVES For a while, the Sailing Authorities set in motion plans to ban the old open hook system, but the lack of a viable alternative meant that these initiatives eventually came to nothing. However, the search for a practical, safe and reliable trapeze system continued and at long last a number of excellent and innovative ideas are at last available on the market. Amongst the best of these is a very clever idea from the Australian designer of the Olympic 49er dinghy, Julian Bethwaite. Using a ball that slots into a socket, the system, now being marketed by dinghy fitting manufacturer Allen Brothers, offers trapeze crews the security of being securely attached, but without the risk of getting snagged up. All at Sea will be trying some of these new systems during the season and will report back if they really have solved the problem of a safe – but workable system.

MINI MASTER CLASS PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

ROPE WORK Here are just a few knots that you may come across in your boating. This list is by no means exhaustive but it will give you an idea of some of the more commonly used knots, how to tie them and what they are used for…

Extracts taken from RYA Knots, Splices & Ropework Handbook, written by Gordon Perry & Steve Judkins, illustrated by Steve Lucas. Visit www.rya.org.uk/shop to find out more

FIGURE OF EIGHT KNOT

Form an overhand crossing loop then tuck the working end through the loop from back to front twice. To tighten, pull on the standing part and the working end. On thicker lines you may need to massage the knot in to place. The lesson here is that not all knots suit all ropes!

BOWLINE

Another much used general purpose knot, it forms a temporary fixed loop in the end of a rope which can be used, among other things, to secure sheets to sails and make a loop in a temporary mooring line.

BENDS Used to join two ropes that are of slightly differing thickness – but with caution. This is one of those knots that unless under load, can come undone very easily which is probably why it is not used to secure sheets to sails. 1. Make a closed bight in the end of the thicker line. Pass the thinner line from back to front up through the bight of the thicker line.

1. Take the standing part in the left hand and pull enough line through to form the required size fixed working loop and a couple of feet or so to make the knot.

B. To tighten: pull the knot up with the standing part and the working end then hold the standing part cupped through one hand, shown in diagram 4, then pull down on the standing part with the other hand to form the knot, leaving a long end.

Masterclass

SHEET BEND

A. Form an overhand crossing loop, with a long working end. Pass the working end behind the standing part then from the front to the rear through the loop.

DOUBLE OVERHAND KNOT

THE

LOOPS

The classic end of rope stopper knot used by sailors in halyards and sheets to prevent the end of the rope running out of a block or fairlead. Easy to tie and remember, it is a very versatile knot. A word of caution, this knot comes undone easily if subjected to constant flailing; remember to leave a long end.

END AND STOPPER KNOTS Primarily used to form a stopper knot in the end of a line or cord; some people favour this knot over the Figure of Eight in the ends of halyards and sheets. This knot forms the basis of many other knots so it is worth becoming familiar with.

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2015

2. Make a small overhand loop (to the left – like you would write a figure 6) with the standing part, in the left hand.

2. Then pass behind both parts of the first line, in the direction shown in figure 2 (under the short end first). 3. Then bring the working end across the front of the closed bight tucking it under its own standing part on top of the bight. Pull on both standing parts to dress the knot.

3. Take the working end and pass it from back to front through that loop, then around the back of the standing part from right to left before passing it back down through the loop.

4. When complete make sure the working end is inside the working loop and that it is at least long enough to put a Half Hitch around the adjacent working loop leg for _Soltron Mayadded 2015_Soltron 13/05/2015 06:35 Page 1 security.

All AT SEA JUNE 2015

ExpErts’ forum

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

RTIR WEATHER BRIEFING

WHATEvER THE WEATHER Race meteorologist Chris Tibbs gives the Raymarine Weather Briefing at the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race and here he offers All at Sea readers essential race advice.

In late June around 1600 boats of all shapes and sizes will be out on the Solent for the Round the Island Race. From large classic yachts like Mariquita from a bygone era to the latest high tech wizardry rushing around and arriving home for lunch, they all have one thing in common - the weather. Whilst it is impossible to give a long range forecast for the race, typically it

will be run in light SW wind early in the morning, picking up through the afternoon making it exciting around St Catherine’s before beating back up the Solent against the tide. However it is not always how the averages tell us it is going to be. As with all yacht races, your chance of success is largely down to preparation. This includes preparation of the boat and planning your tactics depending on wind and tide. WEATHER PATTERNS Whilst we can work out the tides well in advance, the weather is not so predictable. A week ahead of the race we can start to look at weather patterns. We are looking at how settled the weather is; where highs and lows are expected to be and how

much the forecast is changing from day to day, which is an indication of uncertainty. A week out it is impossible to be too precise, but we should know if it will be sunscreen and salads or oilskins and soup. As we get closer to start day we can refine the forecasts; there are huge numbers of sites online to do this and I am sure we all have our own favourites. Generally the free wind forecasts like XC weather or Windguru are based on the American GFS model whilst the UK Met office site is on their own model so there will be some differences. Having followed the weather patterns through the week how can we get a better feel for the day? TIME AND PLACE As we know the weather can be quite different in areas just a few miles apart and also it does depend on the time of day. Early morning, as the land is cool, the wind is usually light and more variable. As the

The all-important Raymarine Weather Briefing with Chris Tibbs giving competitors a heads-up on the highs and/or lows of the race day ahead

day warms up some of the energy from the sun is transferred to the atmosphere and the wind picks up. Enough warmth in the day and a sea breeze may develop but this depends on other variables not just the temperature. We also know that the wind will be strongest around headlands and where it is funnelled by the land, so the places to watch out for are around St Catherine’s and also coming up to the finishing line. But it is around St Catherine’s that it can become dangerous for not only is there the stronger wind, but also the tide. Wind against tide produces some nasty overfalls and it is a balance between being close to the rocks and the risks inherent in being there, or well offshore to avoid the tide rip. This can prove rather too exciting if already flying a spinnaker in marginal conditions. Weather forecasts, therefore, need to be modified to take account of local conditions where the wind may be

accelerated and the wind’s interaction with the tide. EVENT PREVIEW WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THE WATER AND ON THE SHORE

The day is 27 June, the venue is the Isle of Wight, the occasion is the largest participation sailing event in the UK. It is, of course, the world famous J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.

ROUND THE ISLAND RACE J.P. Morgan Asset Management

LAST year actually resulted in the longest race with high performance catamaran Team Richard Mille emerging as line honours winner with a time of almost nine hours. In fact Sir Ben Ainslie, racing on the Farr 45 Rebel with members of his BAR America’s Cup crew, took longer to complete the first thirteen miles than the record-breaking 2hrs 52mins 15secs he took to finish the entire race in 2013. Whether this year’s hundreds of competitors will be faster remains to be seen, but we what we can be sure of is that hundreds will be back in 2015 to battle the elements and achieve the best time they possibly can. However, while thousands return to the race year after year there are also many newcomers.

BEGINNER’S GUIDE

The Round the Island Race is a oneday 50nm yacht race around the Isle of Wight in which around 16,000 sailors compete in over 1,700 boats to win one of over 60 prizes. The sheer scale of the event makes it the

fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK, only beaten by the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs. Not a professional sailor? It does not matter as this is a race in which world famous sailors compete against leisure sailors. For some it will even be their first competitive race. The first start in Cowes will be at 7.00am. However, for those not taking part in the racing itself there are numerous places on the Isle of Wight and mainland where the race can be viewed. For more detailed information about the observation points go to The Course page of the race’s website. For additional coverage the official website also has live text commentary and a boat tracking facility. Either way it is easy to follow all the action. Race results are published as soon as they become available and can be seen on the website or via screens at the Island Sailing Club, the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Regatta Village in Cowes Yacht Haven and the HUB clubs.

ENTER THE RACE

You can only enter online, but if this is not possible, telephone the office and they will put a hard copy in the post for you. No entries will be accepted after midday on 24 June (fee: £285), but enter by 13 June and the fee is lower at £95. www.roundtheisland.org.uk www.facebook.com/ roundtheisland @RoundtheIsland Island Sailing Club 70 High Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO31 7RE Telephone 01983 296 621 Fax 01983 293 214 Email rir@islandsc.org.uk

RACE FACT

Spectators enjoying the excitement of the race. Image: Paul Wyeth

Every boat taking part must have a unique sail number on her sails at the size and position specified in the Racing Rules of Sailing. The Race Committee needs your sail number to record your finishing position and to identify you on the race course and it could be critical in a search and rescue situation.

Entrance to the Race Village. Image: Paul Wyeth

THE COURSE

Starting on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, the fleet races westabout, to The Needles, round St Catherine’s Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy, and back into the Solent to the finish line at Cowes. As you can imagine with over 1,700 boats, getting everybody started on time can be a feat in itself. However the teams are very experienced and have everything organised to the tiniest detail. The boats cross the start line at Cowes in eleven separate groups,

starting every 10 minutes from 7.00 until 8.40 and head in a westerly direction towards Yarmouth. Pilotage is essentially straightforward - keep the Island on your port side!

MORE THAN A RACE

Many competitors come ashore in Cowes before and after the race, and the marinas, bars and restaurants will be full of race enthusiasts. An ideal meeting place is the Island Sailing Club or the J.P. Morgan Asset Image: Paul Wyeth

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2015

Race day preparation ■ Read the Notice of Race - The first step is to make sure that your boat is eligible to take part in the race and that you understand the requirements that you and your boat need to meet. ■ Gather your entry details - Before you fill in your entry form, make sure you have all of the details you are going to need. ■ Complete your crew list - One of the conditions of entry is that you supply a full list of crew members that will be on board during the race. You need to do this online before 24 June. ■ Get your boat ready - Before the race, check your boat over thoroughly.

Race history

The race began as an idea from the Island Sailing Club’s Major Cyril Windeler who, in 1930, suggested a handicap race around the Isle of Wight that could cater for smaller boats of 5 to 25 tons. And so it was that a year later, in 1931, 25 boats took part in the very first Round the Island Race. Peter Brett was the eventual winner of that inaugural race. During wartime, though, there was a ban on private, leisure sailing, but the race organisers were not put off and bounced back immediately after the war. Entry numbers have grown steadily since those days from a respectable 105 in 1950 to the 2008 record of 1,875. As numbers have changed so too have the rules. A Management Regatta Village in Cowes Yacht Haven. This is a chance to chat with fellow competitors and enjoy free entertainment. Check the official website near race day to see what is programmed for Friday and Saturday. The Island Sailing Club has, since last year, reached agreements with the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble and the Royal Lymington Yacht Club to act as HUB Clubs for the duration of the race weekend. The idea came about when some competitors commented that they were unable to be in Cowes after the race but were nonetheless keen to be part of the pre and après events. The HUB clubs will be RTIR branded and will run live streamed coverage and tracking, plus a full declaration and results service and Race Tankard collection on race day. The race prize-giving ceremony is held at the Island Sailing Club at 12 noon on the 28 June when over 60 trophies are awarded. Everyone is welcome and the bar will be open from 11.00.

SAILING FOR CHARITY

Raising money for charity continues to be an important part of the race. Many charitable causes benefit, including the official RTIR charity, The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Founded by round-the-world yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur, the Trust takes young people sailing to help them regain their confidence on their way to recovery from cancer. So far, the Trust has raised over £189,000 through the race. This year the Trust is planning to enter five boats in the race with 25 inspirational young people on board. Teams and individuals who have raised over £50 for the Trust are being

■ Know the rules - Study the Sailing Instructions carefully and acquaint yourself with the Racing Rules of Sailing 2012 - 2016, particularly those of Part 2 which apply when boats meet. ■ Looking after your crew - If you do not have a regular crew, be sure you have enough skills on board, including at least two people who can steer. Try to arrange a practice day for newcomers. ■ Read your Safety Book - Probably the single most important thing to find time for. ■ The tides & weather - Do not be caught out by sudden changes in the weather and make sure you have an up-to-date forecast. ■ Read the Sailing Instructions - You will receive your Sailing Instructions about a week before the race.

reach the results room, still known as ‘The Bunker’, within a matter of minutes. Competitors and spectators alike can see fast on-screen results flashed up on TV sites in Cowes or pick them up from around the world from the RTIR website. The race often runs true to Cyril Windeler’s original aspirations, with small boats, perhaps finishing

well into the evening, carrying off the top prizes. This was true in 2005 when the 1978-built quarter-tonner ‘Purple Haze’ came up trumps for skipper Tony Dodd. awarded a flag to wave on race day. There are many stories to tell behind those raising much needed money for charity. Here is Mark Richardson’s. Keech Hospice in Bedfordshire provided Mark and his four daughters with a safe and calm environment during the last hours of his wife Jackie’s life in 2014. The expertise of the Hospice nursing team made a devastating situation more bearable and the Richardson family was unanimous in the decision to do everything in their power to raise £30,000 for the Hospice. Family friend and Saracens rugby player Hugh Vyvyan challenged Mark to a 10k run, which Mark contra’d with a bid to participate in the 2015 RTIR. Whilst Mark is new to this type of sailing he has previously served in the Navy. The plan continued to evolve and at

HUNDREDS ENTER

The first entry, always greeted with excitement by the Race admin team at the ISC, was Zero II, Cowes Race School. Skipper James Gair said: “It’s fantastic news that Zero II, Cowes Race School, is the first entry! The RTIR is the best race of the season. I think this will be my twentieth time and no two have been the same, from light wind drifts to exhilarating surfs. I love the race as it is open to all sailors, from amateurs to many of the world’s best professionals, all on the same race course and all with a chance of winning. You can make it as tactical as you want or simply have a fun day keeping the Island on your left looking forward to the party in Cowes. Last year we won on Class Zero and are very keen to do it again! Summer’s on the way!”

Also taking part again is Paul Smalley, who will be sailing on With Alacrity. Paul says: “A group of long standing friends affectionately know as WARTS (With Alacrity Racing Team) will again be sailing the Sigma 38 With Alacrity – the tenth year of campaigning the boat owned by Chris and Vanessa Choules. Having been the first Sigma 38 round for the last couple of years, we are looking forward to the challenges this year’s race brings whether it be lots of wind and waves by St Catherine’s Lighthouse or no wind and drifting close to the Needles. Being the first one design class Sigma 38 across the line is our goal, but there will be celebrations whatever the result as we will be celebrating Graeme Gould’s 40th birthday!” Watch out for Paul’s race report in our RTIR round-up in next month’s All at Sea.

BOATING PEOPLE

DO YOU HAVE ANY SAILING AMBITIONS YOU STILL WANT TO FULFILL? To help Ben win the America’s Cup and then successfully defend it in the UK.

Q&A WITH SIR KEITH MILLS, CHAIR OF THE 1851 TRUST & BAR FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD TO SAIL? I love racing and cruising in the Caribbean – fantastic weather, great sailing conditions and some very beautiful islands.

HOW DID YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH BEN AINSLIE RACING LTD COME ABOUT?

HOW DID YOU GET INTO SAILING?

My father took me out on a Wayfarer dingy in Poole when I was eleven. Neither of us knew how to sail and I remember going round in circles for a couple of hours going nowhere. However, it was fun and very inspiring – I quickly became a very keen sailor.

WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE AMERICA’S CUP?

In 1988 I competed in a round the world race and took with me a book about Sir Thomas Lipton who had spent over 30 years trying to win the America’s Cup. I was hooked – what a challenge. It’s the world’s oldest sporting trophy, started in Britain and we have yet to win – the BAR campaign is about righting that wrong and bringing the Cup home.

All AT SeA AUGUST 2012

In 2007 I formed TEAMORIGIN to compete in the 33rd America’s Cup and Ben Ainslie joined the team as skipper. The legal battle between the US and Swiss teams and the resulting format, which I did not think was viable, meant that TEAMORIGIN did not challenge for the last Cup. However, I kept in touch with Ben and watched his incredible comeback sailing with the US team in San Francisco.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN THE 35TH AMERICA’S CUP?

Following the last Cup, Charles Dunstone and I decided that we needed to help Ben put a British team together and BAR was born. I’m became a founder, investor and director of BAR.

TELL US ABOUT THE AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES COMING TO PORTSMOUTH IN JULY.

I’m also the Chair/CEO of TEAMORIGIN which is the company that is organizing the America’s Cup World Series events in Portsmouth in July 2015 and again in 2016. I also Chair the 1851 Trust, which is the charity we have formed to use the

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

“It’s the world’s oldest sporting trophy, started in Britain and we have yet to win – the BAR campaign is about righting that wrong and bringing the Cup home.” America’s Cup and BAR to help improve the lives of young people. For the first time in over 160 years a British team will compete in British waters in an America’s Cup competition. It’s going to be amazing; up to 500,000 spectators, live TV and fantastic close to shore racing.

TELL US ABOUT THE 1851 TRUST.

The 1851 Trust was formed last November with Ben Ainslie and The Duchess of Cambridge as our Patrons.

It will raise money to fund projects to help young people (1) get into sailing (2) with STEM education (3) with training and apprenticeships and (4) improving the marine environment.

WHAT ELSE IS COMING UP?

Apart from the America’s Cup I have a new Jason Kerr design 40+ race boat arriving in May and hope my first race will be the Round the Island Race followed by the RYS Bicentenary Regatta and Cowes Week.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SAILING? Sailing is the only time I switch off from business – once on the water I’m in a different world.

WHAT’S THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

Probably leading the team that won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We beat eight other countries and then, with Seb Coe, went on to deliver a great Games.

There are two guys that I think are amazing and inspire me. Firstly, Alex Thomson, who is the UK’s top ocean racer. A brilliantly talented sailor who is unbelievably tenacious. Secondly, it has to be Ben. In my view the most talented sailor in the world.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS? We need everyone in the UK to back Ben and the BAR team starting this summer in Portsmouth. Come and support the British team making history. You can tell your grandchildren that you were there.

GREEN FOCUS

The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms.

JANE SWAN

Know Your Squirts and Ripples RIGHT: Carpet sea squirt is found in long orange cream coloured colonies. Image: CCW

How much do you know about non-native species and the way they spread? Spend some time getting to know them and help the environment too.

LEFT: Tufty-buff bryozoan and Red ripple bryozoan. Image: TGB

When you see plants and seaweeds take the time to find out if they are non-native species

IF it is not diving into waste bins to see what boatyards are throwing away then it is peering over the sides of pontoons to see what non-native species might be lurking below! It is an occupational habit for The Green Blue that we can’t take a walk along a pontoon without scrutinizing a pile or hull. Even this month we snapped Darwin’s Barnacle, often found on artificial structures and originally from Australia and New Zealand and discovered in the UK in 1945. Some species have been in the UK for so long

COMPETITION

that you could easily mistake them for native plants and seaweeds. If you look at the bio-fouling on your hull, a pontoon or a fender you can be pretty sure there will be some non-native species in amongst it. It is notoriously tricky to identify some nonnative species; even marine biologists sometimes have to take a second look. With The Green Blue’s help you might just be able to spot one or two the next time you are near the water. Wakame, also known as Japanese kelp and cultivated in Japan for cooking (think Miso soup), is a large golden brown seaweed first recorded in the UK in 1993. It has fingerlike edges and a holdfast frilled root and can foul jetties, vessels, moorings and buoys. Tufty-buff bryozoan may look like seaweed but it is in fact a tiny colonial organism that grows to around 4cm. It can be found in dense populations in harbours and marinas, spotted as light brown bushy tufts and can be a nuisance on props and keels. The Red ripple Bryozoan is something you might spot on a fender. It is actually made up of an intricate pattern of 1mm individuals that form a rigid sheet of red crust colonies often Wakame was several centimetres across. As first recorded in beautifully intricate and fragile the UK in 1993. Image: Kathryn as it may look up close, it can Birch CCW

foul submerged boat hulls and, interestingly, is copper tolerant making it able to grow on some antifouled surfaces. The Orange-tipped sea squirt was first recorded in the UK in 2004 and has spread around the coastline. It is translucent (so you can clearly see the gut inside), smooth with orange-tipped siphons through which water is drawn in and expelled or squirted. And lastly, the Carpet sea squirt is firm, leathery and found in long orange cream coloured colonies. It has already caused problems in several marinas around the UK due to the way in which it smothers structures and other organisms, so real vigilance is needed to stop it establishing more widely. There are over 90 marine non-native species in the UK, and over 20 are known to be invasive. As stunning and unusual as some of these species may be, it is important to remember that they are not native to the UK and some are invasive meaning they pose a real threat to our ecosystems, habitats, infrastructure and equipment. Recreational boats are one of several ways they can spread so we must stay alert and follow a few simple actions to keep them at bay. Washing off your anchor before stowing and moving location is important, as is removing any visible fouling from your hull and equipment and putting it in the bin, not back in the water. And, of course, the annual lift, scrub and reapplying of antifoul is key to limiting the amount of growth. The Marine Biological Association produces an excellent identification guide for selected marine non-native species. If you would like a free copy please contact The Green Blue on info@thegreenblue.org.uk.

RYA FOCUS

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

BY EMMA SLATER

Boating abroad If the early spring sunshine has whetted your appetite for stretching your sea legs this year, are you confident you are up-to-date on the laws, rules and regulations that could scupper your plans?

ONE of the most awesome things about cruising is the freedom to explore where you like, when you like. Fancy a few days in France? Not a problem, weather permitting. Does Holland appeal? What is stopping you heading there? Maybe you want to go even further afield. But remember if you are cruising the waters of another country under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea that country is within its rights to ask you to comply with its rules and regulations.

DID YOU KNOW? Original documents should be carried, particularly the registration document, as you could be fined for only having a copy.

RULE ENFORCEMENT

In reality, most countries will seldom enforce their rules and regulations in full. Most commonly the skipper is required to provide evidence of their competence, and carriage of local publications or regulations is also often stipulated, especially for the inland waterways. But it is a useful reminder that wherever you want to go there could be factors, local or otherwise, that could leave you in a spot of bother if you do not do your homework. “Being aware of your obligations prior to leaving UK territorial waters is important,” explains Carol Paddison, the RYA’s Cruising Advisor. “UNCLOS defines the extent of each country’s territory and whether a vessel is under the laws of its country of registration, i.e. the Flag State, or additionally those of the country whose waters it is lying in, i.e. the Coastal State. “A basic understanding of this will help you establish which other rules you need to follow, as the Coastal State can specify legislation you must comply with.”

SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT? 1. Evidence of Competence and the ICC A certificate of competence – providing your boat is used as a ‘pleasure vessel’, is UK flagged and less than either 24m in length or 80GT – is not mandatory in the UK, but that can change abroad. This new and up-to-date page on the RYA website (www.rya.org.uk/go/iccaccept) will help you decide if evidence of competence is required or the ICC is recommended, depending on where you want to go. It also has other useful advice on evidencing competence. Remember the requirements can change if you move from coastal to inland waters. Even if evidence of competence is not formally stipulated, being able to produce solid documentation is never going to do any harm and the ICC is increasingly satisfying foreign customs officials looking for evidence of your competence. 2. Law of the Sea and the Coastal State Under UNCLOS if you undertake a continuous and expeditious passage through the territorial waters of another country, and do not engage in any activity that does not have a direct bearing on the passage, you have a right of passage. Compliance with international conventions, such as Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS), is still required and the Coastal State has the right to ensure you do so. Because most recreational cruisers will anchor for lunch and/or visit several different ports on a trip, they are not deemed as being on a ‘continuous and expeditious passage’. This brings you under the jurisdiction of the Coastal State, as does launching your boat in another country. You could then be required to adhere to all of that country’s regulations. 3. Paperwork When taking a UK registered boat to any other country, you need the right papers for the boat and the crew. These are the minimum you should be able to produce if requested. Ship’s Papers: ■ Registration documentation ■ Ship Radio Licence ■ Evidence of the boat’s VAT status ■ Insurance documents ■ Evidence the vessel is RCD compliant (e.g. CE Mark) / exempt Personal papers: ■ Passport ■ Proof of authority to operate maritime radio (e.g. SRC) ■ Evidence of competence (e.g. ICC) ■ European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) Original documents should be carried, particularly the registration document, as you could be fined, most notably in France, for only having a copy.

Most recreational cruisers will visit several different ports on a trip

4. Customs and immigration formalities Customs Notice 8 explains the requirements for private individuals sailing pleasure craft to and from the UK. On arrival in another country flying the Q flag signals you require clearance from the authorities. If you remain in the EU and have nothing to declare, both goods and non-EU residents, you do not need to fly the Q Flag. If you leave the UK and your intended

Keep your receipt as proof of where you purchased your fuel and to show correct duty was paid in the UK.

destination is outside the EU, including the Channel Islands, you must advise UK Customs of your departure using form C1331. Similarly if you arrive in the UK from a non-EU port, you must report your arrival to UK Customs. Be aware of the Schengen Area, which has essentially abolished checks at common borders between many EU and EEA countries. The UK is not part of this treaty so you may have to clear immigration when arriving from the UK in a Schengen area country. In addition to your boat wearing her ensign it is customary, and often expected, to hoist a courtesy flag - a small version of the maritime ensign of the country you are visiting. 5. Red Diesel If you have filled your boat’s tanks with duty paid red diesel in the UK you should be permitted to use it elsewhere in the EU. In Belgium having red diesel in a pleasure craft remains unlawful, and boaters were being fined. However the RYA is not aware of any UK boaters being fined by Belgian authorities for the presence of red diesel in their fuel tanks during the last couple of cruising seasons. To minimise potential issues, particularly in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany or France, keep your receipt as proof of where you purchased your fuel and to show correct duty was paid in the UK. Also log the refuelling date and engine hours, and only keep red diesel in the main fuel storage tank, as EU laws on red diesel do not extend to fuel carried in spare cans. 6. Holding tanks Restrictions on the discharge of sewage are slowly increasing so check regulations on the discharge of ‘black’ water – toilet waste - and holding tanks too.

More information about cruising abroad can be found at www.rya.org.uk/ infoadvice/boatingabroad with countryspecific information available to RYA members. RYA Members can also contact the RYA Cruising team at cruising@rya.org.uk for up-to-date advice. Always check the latest with the authorities of the country in question too.

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2015

Lizzy Foreman

Lizzy, 24, has been sailing since she was three and hopes to one day compete in the Vendée Globe. This autumn she takes part in the solo transatlantic yacht race, the Mini Transat.

TAKING ON THE MINI TRANSAT

PREPARiNg fOR THE MiNi TRANSAT All At Sea met Lizzy Foreman at this year’s London Boat Show and were impressed by how much she has achieved in her 24 years. As an inspirational young sailor we are delighted that she will be sharing her sailing life with us, kicking off with the build-up to September’s Mini Transat.

Imagine this - you take a reef, hoist a sail, bale out, doze on the rail. There’s nothing to see but seabirds, and only yourself to amuse. You haven’t gone mad… or have you? Your lifeline out here is quite literally, a line… attached 24/7 to a surfing walnut, in a never ending game of buckaroo. Day in, day out, until you finish. You just hope there will be some boats behind you at the end. This is a race, after all. ConsIDereD as the starting blocks to grander sea adventures, the biennial Mini Transat sees around 84 solo competitors skittle, dash and roll their way across the Atlantic in a 21ft boat.

The daily routine becomes one of survival: managing the boat, predicting the weather, eating and sleeping sufficiently. There are no mod cons for distraction and absolutely no communication with the outside world is allowed. To sail a Mini is to find peace and freedom; although it is somewhat limited to a cramped cockpit and soaking wet, stripped out hull. COUNTDOWN In a few months’ time I will be casting off for my very first Transatlantic crossing, having raced throughout 2014 to qualify for the 2015 edition of the Mini Transat. I’ve become good friends with #633 - a Pogo 2, a common design within the ‘series division’ of the Mini fleet.

now ten years old, my boat has been to the Azores and back twice (once with me), crossed the Atlantic twice and has seen me steadily through 4,000nm of sailing already. This includes a 1000nm, non-stop solo passage and also a Fastnet race. Consequently I have had to work hard to keep the boat in racing condition. one exciting side project has been making all of the sails myself, under the guidance and design of Andrew Woods at solo sails in Cornwall. I have also been learning about electronics, energy management, rigging and navigation. The job list always seems to be endless. on top of this there is logistics, media, fundraising and charity work to manage. A Mini campaign really is ‘all or nothing’, feeling akin to running a small

business. I could be on the other side of the world to the boat and still find myself with work to do. THREE RACES DOWN now back onshore after the first three races of the season – a double-handed 150nm race from Lorient to Pornichet, the 300nm Pornichet select and the 500nm Mini in Mai (the course was shortened due to severe weather), I have now got a quick bit of antifouling to do before heading to Douarnenez, for the 230nm MAP, swiftly followed by a 600nm race to Fastnet rock. Directly after the Fastnet I will be sailing to Cowes for the J.P. Morgan Asset Management round the Island race, raising money in aid of UKsA . This is the charity that gave me my very first taste of ‘yachting’ in partnership with the British Keelboat Academy. If you see me on the water give me a wave. Until next time… www.lizzyracing.com www.minitransat.fr

Lizzy fOREMAN: Having sailed since the age of three, Lizzy took to racing in her early teens progressing through the RS Feva, Laser Radial, 29er and RS 700 dinghy classes. At the age of 18, Lizzy began working as a first mate onboard a Clipper and a Whitbread 60 confirming her desire to one day compete in the Vendée Globe. Selection for the British Keelboat Academy in 2010 marked the start of Lizzy’s journey towards this lifelong goal. A number of campaigns and thousands of nautical miles followed and Lizzy has now set her sights on the 2015 Mini Transat. MiNi TRANSAT: The Mini Transat is a biennial solo transatlantic yacht race covering over 4000 miles. The 2015 edition starts in September in Douarnenez, France, with a stopover in Lanzarote before the finish line in Guadeloupe in the Caribbean).

Some English and American landowners were prevented, by a clause in the title of their estates, to either fell or sell timber as this was reserved for building ships for the Navy. However, this did not include trees which were blown down and so a windfall came to mean a financial blessing, an unexpected gift of money.

JUNE 2004

In June 2004, Dame Ellen MacArthur sailed her trimaran B&Q/Castorama from Ambrose Light, Lower New York Bay, USA to Lizard Point, Cornwall, UK in 7 days, 3 hours, 50 minutes. This set a new world record for a transatlantic crossing by women, beating the previous crewed record as well as the singlehanded version.

CHICHESTER is a compact walking town with lovely gardens around the Cathedral, some good independent shops and a thriving theatre that attracts decent plays (and players) from London and a serious Art Gallery. This small, theatrical town is buzzing with a great choice of restaurants, allowing you to take advantage of the pre theatre menus that are usually well-priced. There is a choice of moorings in the Harbour, and we plumped for Premier who run the conveniently placed, very pretty Chichester Marina. It sits on the Salterns Way, offering an attractive hike or bike into Chichester. We got on the bikes, walking past the steady queue outside the Boat House, towards the lock building, where much fun is had watching the ebb and flow, rope throwing, skipper shouting and boaters’ banter whilst waiting to cross over t’other side to cycle along the Salterns Way.

CROWN & ANCHOR

Wild flowers, verdant barley fields and the blue glimpse of the harbour to our right, we sped along towards the spire of the Cathedral, but could not resist a glimpse at the Crown & Anchor, in top spot at Dell Quay and under new ownership now. I have heard good things about their new menu, locally sourced ingredients and the oyster & fizz bar. We were ready for a stiff coffee and headed straight to Attibassi Coffee in Church Square. I love the way this retro, Roman style espresso house rubs shoulders with Raymond Blanc on one side and fellow Italian Carluccios on the other, but is cooler and busier than either. The uber bright red espresso machine looks like an enormous radiogram, but sits well with the red leather banquette seating and interesting architectural wallpaper. It has great coffee and, for mocha fans, try a café Nutella and an Aperol Spritz to accompany your panini.

The asparagus, with poached egg and wild garlic emulsion at Amelie & Friends

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2015

Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

Chichester Harbour One of our prettiest natural harbours, with the old world charm of Itchenor, the briny bustle of Bosham and the culture of Chichester; add in some great beaches at the Witterings, fun, fast racing with beautiful day boats to watch from waterside pubs and you have it all.

THE REVIEW: AMELIE & FRIENDS

We started with the asparagus, with poached egg and wild garlic emulsion. Now I love asparagus, but think there was too much emulsion and not quite enough flavour. However this was compensated when the Onglet steak arrived with its Port jus and some fine fluffy chips, really crunchy on the outside, but great mashed up in some of the jus – full of flavour. The warm lemon meringue pie with raspberry sorbet was magnificent – top marks to the pastry chef. Lunch came to £35 each with a glass of Picpoul. There were many happy neighbours enjoying a special Sunday lunch feeling. It has a nice conservatory and patio with some fine old olive trees at the back.

THE BIKE Salterns Way 18km route from the centre of Chichester out to the sand dunes at East Head, conveniently via Chichester Marina. A well kept path, not road bike suitable.

Chichester Marina is a great place to moor your boat

Onglet steak with its Port jus and some fine fluffy chips

Then off for a quick whizz round Pallant House, with its wonderful minimalist garden, London Plane Trees and some great sculptures. We could easily have stopped for a slice of cake in the temptingly tasteful cafe but we had other plans.

PASSING THE CATHEDRAL

Cycling past the Cathedral we wanted to see how the Peregrine chicks were doing. You should be able to see the parents and fledglings well into June. We then spotted an interesting

THE HIKE It is just over 4.5 miles, so will take about an hour and a half. If you haven’t time or the inclination to walk this far I would suggest the lovely river walk (1.6 miles and come back via the fields) to Dell Quay (clearly signed once you cross the lock) and have lunch at the Crown & Anchor. There are a couple of walks within Chichester itself. I loved the Tree Trail, as I like trees, but the City Walls walk looked fun too and takes you into the Bishop’s Palace Garden.

The canal path at Chichester

sign ‘Belle Isle’, so we went in. I loved the interior, a bright bar, smiley staff, stencilled washed wood, lots of fun for a group or to bring the teens, who will love the fish finger sandwiches and burritos. We had a lunch date at Amelie & Friends, though, as it came highly recommended for a special night out – as did No 1 and Food & Fork, which are all independents. These top guys are not particularly cheap. For example, Food & Fork’s Market Menu is £19.50 for two delicious courses, but Côte can knock £10 off this, if you are in the mood for simple calamari and Steak Frites. I have to say they do this very well, even if they are a chain. They have exceptionally good bread, flown in from Paris daily I’m told.

Whipped & Baked – sour dough and a great choice of cakes and bakes Artisan Café – best brownies The Exclusive Cake Shop & Vintage Tea Rooms – what a mouthful, but I can vouch for the wonderful cakes and teas in this wee gem of a place Try the Cowdray Afternoon Tea Russell’s Garden Centre – taste the sausage rolls in the deli section, a nice café. It is a one-hour walk from the Marina

PLYMOUTH YACHT HAVEN Plymouth Yacht Haven Shaw Way, Mount Batten Plymouth, Devon, PL9 9XH 01752 404231 enquiries@plymouthyachthaven.com www.yachthavens.com/plymouth

MANY boating enthusiasts describe the waters of Plymouth Sound as an undiscovered gem. You are spoilt for choice with day sailing destinations, and gorgeous Cornish bays and villages are yours to discover and explore. With the five star facilities of Plymouth Yacht Haven just minutes from the open water, you will wonder why you have never visited before. Plymouth Yacht Haven is a friendly, peaceful and tranquil marina offering first class facilities and a warm welcome from the moment you arrive. You will receive VIP treatment throughout your stay too, as after five months work and a £400,000 investment

DISCOVER WHAT’S NEW

Plymouth Yacht Haven prides itself on quality from its facilities to customer service. And its latest development is no exception. Modelled on facilities at the marina group’s flagship site at Lymington, Plymouth’s redevelopment includes hotel-quality luxuries including underfloor heating, modern and eco-friendly features, plus a bath suite.

the brand new luxury facilities at this 5 Gold Anchor marina have recently opened to the public. With 450 berths, all supplied with water, electricity and free Wi-Fi, berth holders and visitors are also treated to tasty dishes from the Bridge Bar and Restaurant, a well-stocked chandlery, on-water 24 hour diesel, 24 hour manned security and free car parking available for berth holders. Plymouth Yacht Haven is also one of the only marinas in the area to offer a lift-out service with the ability to hoist up to 75 tons. Plus, there is the option to berth super yachts up to 50m in length.

The new facilities were opened by berth holders of 25 years, Derek and Claire Williams. They said: “We have travelled extensively over the world over the last 25 years using lots of different marinas and Plymouth Yacht Haven is the best – without question. The staff and the facilities are superb. The new more luxurious facilities will add a hotel feel and the bath suite is wonderful. This will improve our experience even more, something we never thought possible.”

CRUISING

There are some stunning places to visit around Plymouth Sound. Just a few miles from Plymouth Yacht Haven is Barn Pool, a little bay nestled beneath the grandeur of the National Trust’s Mount Edgecumbe Estate. Make sure you stop at The Edgecumbe Arms (www.edgcumbearms.co.uk) for a bite to eat and watch the warships leave and return to the dockyard. A popular anchorage to the west of Plymouth, within a short sail of the marina, is Cawsand Bay. Perfect for a lunchtime or overnight stop, there is plenty of room to land on the beach and sample one of the many good pubs nearby. Polperro, with its spectacular rugged cliffs, is also worth a stop for the day. It is the epitome of the Cornish fishing village with a steep hill running down past whitewashed cottages to the harbour. With beautiful scenery and so much to see and do ashore, Fowey is one of the best known Cornish harbours and the perfect weekend destination if

cruising from Plymouth Yacht Haven. The approach and entrance is straightforward, but during busy times call Fowey Harbour radio on VHF Ch 12 and the helpful staff will guide you to your mooring. Don’t overlook Polruan on your trip here. There are some spectacular clifftop walks and two great pubs – the Lugger (www.thelugger.co.uk) and the Russell Inn (www.russellinn.co.uk). East of Plymouth is Cellar Bay, which is a secluded spot perfect for swimming and a leisurely picnic. Follow the creek up to Noss Mayo and explore the pretty villages here. Also to the east are Mothecombe Beach, Burgh Island, the River Avon and Bantham, all of which are definitely worth a stop. But to view one of the most unspoilt stretches of the Devon coastline, make sure you visit the River Erme. There is limited depth inshore but the wide expanse of flat sands are firm enough to dry out motor boats, and an anchorage can be found on the western side of the estuary mouth.

ACCESS TO PLYMOUTH YACHT HAVEN Plymouth Sound can be entered via the Western or Eastern channels. There is not less than 3.7m of depth and so is navigable by most yachts at all states of the tide. Head for the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club situated on Plymouth Hoe and once the Mount Batten breakwater is passed to starboard,

follow the Cattewater channel, where you will see Plymouth Yacht Haven on your starboard side. If you are coming by car, turn left off the A38 at Marsh Mills roundabout onto the A374 signed Plymouth City Centre. After 1.25 miles get into left hand lane and follow signs for Kingsbridge A379. This takes you across Laira Bridge where you will see the first signs for Mount Batten and Turnchapel. After

Excellence in Marine Engineering

The brewery started in 2007 as a real-ale dream by two men, James Watt and Martin Dickie, and a dog. Most of the new boutique breweries focus on being a ‘better’ real ale for a local market. In comparison, BrewDog has been a whirlwind of expansion spurred on by innovative marketing, constant product development and expanding distribution. In 2007, the two men and the dog brewed 1,000 hectolitres per annum. In 2009 they moved to a new eco-friendly facility near Aberdeen, had 29 staff, had recruited 1,300 shareholders, realale enthusiasts, to fund the expansion and increased brewing to 9,500 hectolitres a year. By 2014 there were The World’s Best Gin at the 2013 Wine & Spirit Competition

358 employees, 15,000 shareholders, 90,000 hectolitres brewed, they owned six bars extending from Edinburgh to trendy areas of London like Camden and Clapham and exported to 55 countries.

WORLD’S STRONGEST BEER

Provocative marketing included competing to create the strongest beer in the world at over 38 per cent (compared with 37.5 per cent for UK standard spirits), which brought media coverage and attention from industry watchdogs. The bar strategy is great tasting beers “at prices where you can indulge in everything that is great about craft beer and be introduced to a world of beer you never knew existed”. To support this they brewed over 30 different beers last year. Punk IPA, their main brand, is a post-modern, 5.6 per cent real ale. It is made with new-world hops, mainly from the US, and tastes great. My sailing club tasting panel said, “Nice light brown colour, clear and mildly sparkling, good head, citrusy, an unusual extra flavour (which turned out to be lychee), spikey bitter finish and real ale after taste.” So they liked it - and so did I. Refreshing and noticeably lighter than other strong five to six per cent real ale brews, yet classic enough to be on the shelves in my local (Surrey) Waitrose at £1.65 per 330ml bottle. For their full range and list of barscheck out www.brewdog.com

of Southwold (the only brewer in UK making spirits on the same premises) has just repackaged its Copper House Gin with a trendy, vibrant design screen-printed on to the bottle. The colour tones are predominantly sea or sky blue and the bottle is very good-looking and tactile. The gin is 40 per cent and was judged the World’s Best Gin at the 2013 Wine & Spirit Competition. It’s made from East Anglian barley with juniper and only five other botanicals to create a fine London gin taste of juniper with sweet orange and sharp hibiscus. It can be sourced from Adnams own Cellar & Kitchen stores, mainly in East Anglia, in London at 30 Store Street WC1E 7QE (near Goodge Street tube station) or online from www.adnams.co.uk. Expect to pay £27 per 70cl bottle.

DADS are often derided for their dancing or indulged when they retreat to the boat or shed for a few hours of solitude. So time to forget these stereotypes and give him something modern and cool for Father’s Day, 21 June. If he likes to relax with a beer in his hand and a real ale at that, the BrewDog brewery near Aberdeen, Scotland has come up with Punk IPA with a distinctive blue, black and white label on the bottle.
