MAKING WAVES IN PORTSMOUTH
All At SeA MARCH 2015
FROM PAGE ONE The Duchess was in Portsmouth helping to promote Sir Ben’s work to get young people involved in sailing and the marine industry. During her visit the Duchess received the inside track on the team’s progress and was privy to some of the secret technology that will not only give the team the competitive edge in the upcoming America’s Cup, but also be adapted for the BAR Visitor Centre. The centre will be run by the 1851 Trust, of which the Duchess is Patron, at BAR’s Portsmouth headquarters. The visitor centre will be an interactive showcase for the sport, sustainability and innovation, to inspire and engage more young engineers. It will also support the STEM agenda - to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in schools and provide resources to teachers within the core subjects. Sir Ben said: “It was fantastic to have the Duchess join us today. We’ve just returned to sailing on the Solent with our training boat and it was a chance for us to be able to explain what we are up to on the technical side of the team’s challenge, and show the work that goes on behind the scenes. “Everyone has been busy in the team, as well as making good progress on developing concepts for the BAR Visitor Centre and at the construction of the new headquarters in Portsmouth.” The final stop on the Duchess’s tour was the Spinnaker Tower in Gunwharf Quays, which gives a
CONTENTS
great view from more than 100m in the air of the BAR headquarters site and the construction work. The Duchess was briefed on the building of the headquarters, the BAR Visitor Centre and shown the race course for the America’s Cup World Series event in July. As well as a Royal visitor Sir Ben welcomed Prime Minister David Cameron in February. The Prime Minister took a tour of the race base during a visit to the city. During his tour Mr Cameron spoke to Ben Ainslie Racing apprentices and looked through plans showing how the final construction of the headquarters will look. Sir Keith Mills, whose company TEAMORIGIN Events will manage ACWS Portsmouth, said: “The team will move into their new headquarters building in May, and we will look to a soft launch of the visitor centre in July, with it fully open in September in time for the new academic year. “The America’s Cup World Series event will be here in July as well, and we are expecting over half a million visitors into the city. It’s going to be quite a year.” Sir Ben’s team must contest a series of qualifying races in the hope of winning through to the head-tohead final in 2017. When the America’s Cup World Series comes to Portsmouth in the summer there will be a large festival area with a four-day programme of sport and entertainment where spectators can enjoy the day with large screens to watch the action.
The team bases will be located within the Historic Dockyard in the Royal Navy base alongside the Mary Rose Museum and HMS Victory with amazing sights of the boats and sailors getting ready for action each morning and after racing.
If you would like to do more than go along to watch there will be a volunteer programme, ‘The Wave Makers’. To register interest go to www. volunteers@ teamorigin.com. Follow the build-up to this unique event every month in All At Sea.

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde
WINNING a handful of Olympic medals obviously gives the owner special powers. I say this because Sir Ben Ainslie can do no wrong. Even when his boat had a mechanical failure while on honeymoon he managed to end up on Richard Branson’s Neckar Island. Having set up Ben Ainslie Racing in 2013 he is working full steam ahead, with his team, towards the next America’s Cup. Such is his influence he has got the backing of many big names and has even had a Royal visitor, the Duchess of Cambridge, at BAR’s base in Portsmouth. With so much talk about the America’s Cup already we feel like it is within our grasp when in fact Sir Ben and his team have a long, hard road ahead of them. What we do know, though, is that they will have incredible support both from the public and the British sailing community. The Royal family keep making their way into the All At Sea news pages, whether it’s The Princess Royal at the London Boat Show or the Duchess of Cambridge visiting BAR in Portsmouth. It is wonderful to see sailing getting support like this, especially as it helps to give it national promotion that it often otherwise misses out on.
READERS LETTER
It’s a shame that sailing does not get the television coverage of many other sports, despite huge participation figures for events like the Round The Island Race. Some UK sailing events receive far more television and media coverage internationally than they do here. Hopefully this summer’s major sailing events, like the America’s Cup World Series and RTIR, get the exposure they deserve. You can be assured, though, that All At Sea will be bringing you all the news both online at www.allatsea.co.uk and in the paper. One of the big stories that broke as we went to press with the last edition was the shocking news that Paralympic sailing is being dropped from the 2020 Olympics. This decision has not been reversed, but turn to page 14 to find out what has been happening since the news broke to try and convince the International Paralympic Committee to revaluate the situation. Let’s hope we will be bringing you more positive news about this in the near future. As always we love to hear from you and have been especially enjoying all the Photos of the Month that you have been sending in. As you’ll see from a reader’s letter below you are enjoying the photos too, so keep them coming. editor@allatsea.co.uk
MEMORIES!
ENTRIES are on target for another bumper J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. More than 620 boats have already signed up since January when the Island Sailing Club opened entries for the 84th race - one of the biggest sailing events in the world – which will take place on June 27. The first entry, always greeted with excitement by the race admin team at the ISC, was announced as Zero II, Cowes Race School. Proud Skipper James Gair, said: “Summer’s on the way!”
And he added: “It’s fantastic news that Zero II, Cowes Race School, is the first entry! The RTI is the best race of the season.” The one-day race pitches amateurs against many of the world’s best professionals on the same race course and all with a chance of winning on handicap. The first is set for 0700. They include celebrities, sailors for whom it is the only race of the year, family crews and first time racers. With as many as 1,600 boats, it is also one of the biggest participatory sporting events in the UK and makes huge contributions to charity. The race weekend is one big party in Cowes.
Gair added: ““I love the race as it is open to all sailors. I think this will be my 20th and no two have been the same, from light wind drifts to exhilarating surfs. “You can make it as tactical as you want or simply have a fun day keeping the Island on your left looking forward to the party in Cowes. “Last year we won on Class Zero and are very keen to do it again! There are two free entries to this year’s race waiting to be drawn by the organisers at the ISC. The third and final draw takes place on 6 March. For details and to enter go to www.rtir. me/competition
I picked up a copy of All At Sea at the Ryde Hovercraft while waiting for the 12.15 to Southsea, and your Photos of the Month feature last month brought the memories swirling back, featuring as it did, coincidentally, both Fareham Creek and Yarmouth. I operated commercial boats from both ports; Fareham in the late 1960s for trawling and shark fishing and Yarmouth from 1969 on, when I moved the shark fishing business there and widened out the operation to include ‘normal’ fishing trips, charter and salvage work. Later working with the Shipwreck Centre on the Island (formerly Bembridge Maritime Museum) for shipwreck search and recovery. The photos reminded me of the early days at Fareham when, in the dawn mist, we motored down Fareham Creek . . . happy days indeed! Dick Downes, Isle of Wight Last months pictures from Paul Bolan

RACE Partner Haven Knox-Johnston is the new sponsor of The Seamanship Award for the next two editions of the Island race. The award pays tribute to outstanding acts of seamanship on race day. Award nominations are open to all those involved in the race, whether competitors, spectators, members of the
emergency services, outside authorities or race officers. Nominations are judged by a group led by Dave Atkinson from ISC Race Management, the Commodore of the ISC and a representative from Haven Knox-Johnston. Nominations are sent to the ISC following the race and the trophy will be awarded in September. John
Macaulay, Managing Director of Haven Knox-Johnston, said: “Having been a Race Partner for the past 12 years we are always looking for new ways to be involved and support this great event. “This type of award can often bring out the best in people for their actions not just because they are the fastest on the water.”

The Sailing Sclerosis project, Oceans of hope, is working to change the perception of multiple sclerosis by showing what is possible when people with a chronic disease are empowered to conquer their individual challenges. Although navigating the world’s oceans is still a great challenge, the technological evolution of boats and
navigational aids as well as communicational equipment has made this kind of journey safer than ever. Oceans of hope is currently sailing 33,000 nautical miles around the world and at each port is holding sailing taster days in collaboration with the local MS societies, yacht clubs and sailing communities. There are between four and seven people with MS on the boat working as crew at any time and a professional crew of three to four, one of them a doctor. Robert Munns, Duty Manager at Brighton Marina, will be joining the vessel Oceans of hope in the Galapagos islands and sailing with her to Tahiti over the next couple of months. www.sailingsclerosis.org

Testing times en route to Auckland The Volvo Ocean Race is on its way to Auckland where preparations for the arrival of the fleet towards the end of February / beginning of March are in full swing. Sickness on board, plus a couple of injuries, have put the crews of the fleet to the test as they make their way through the Pacific Ocean from Sanya to Auckland on the 5,264 nm Leg 4. Guillermo Altadill of MAPFRe injured his hand and needed it to be bandaged up. On Team Brunel Gerd-Jan Poortman ruptured his eardrum and suffered bruising to his arm and side after being washed into a dagger board. “This is threatening,” said Jens Delmer in a message from Team Brunel, referring to the unfortunate Pablo Arrarte’s flu. “We live in such a small space that something
can spread easily to the group.” Although the Dutch boat was effectively a man down for a couple of days because of Arrarte’s illness, Team Brunel had initially established a strong position at the head of the fleet after gambling on a more northerly route along with Team SCA early in the leg. Winners of the last leg, Dongfeng Race Team were not looking like they would repeat that success. however from running in last place they were able to take the lead with 1300 nm to go leaving MAPRe in second and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing third. Leg 5 kicks off on March 15 with the teams sailing 6,776 nm to Itajai, Brazil. This will be followed by three further legs before finishing in Gothenburg, Sweden with a final in-port race on June 27.

HOEGH OSAKA SET TO RETURN TO SERVICE

Heritage grant to restore tug
A tug that was last in service 30 years ago and was saved eleven years ago is to finally be restored after receiving a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £3.8 million. The historic North West vessel the Daniel Adamson is the last-surviving Steam Tug-
Tender in the UK and will re-enter service in spring 2016. When complete people will be able to ride on the historic steam ship as part of a programme of cruises on the Mersey, Weaver and Manchester Ship Canal. When
not in use, she will be moored outside some of the area’s waterside museums as part of a joint education programme to help visitors and school children explore the region’s important industrial and maritime history.
THe cargo ship Hoegh Osaka, which hit the headlines when it ran aground in the Solent on January 4, has sailed to Falmouth in Cornwall to undergo repairs. The ship was able to navigate from Southampton to Falmouth on February 11 under its own power. Initially it was thought the work to fix the ship’s stanchions and hydraulic wheel ramp and a deep clean would take around three weeks, but after an inspection in Falmouth it was found the ship was in better condition than first thought. A spokesman for the owners of the ship, Hoegh Autoliners, said the repairs would be finished in just one week. After which, according to the Hoegh Autolinerspokesman, the ship is expected to return to normal service. However the Maritime Coastguard Agency will have the final say as to whether Hoegh Osaka is seaworthy following another inspection. Hoegh Osaka had been towed back to Southampton by four tugs on 22 January, 19 days after deliberately being run aground on Bramble Bank whilst on its way to Germany. The initial rescue operation involved four RNLI lifeboats together with the Solent Coastguard helicopter. Thanks

to them all 25 crew were safely brought ashore with two being treated at hospital for minor injuries. At that time a 200m exclusion zone was created around the transporter to prevent small boats interfering with the tugs and other shipping as salvagers tried to get aboard. However as the ship lay away from the main navigable channel the port was able to run normally. The cargo on board the vessel, thought to be worth in the region of £60m, included 1,200 Jaguars and Land Rovers and a Rolls-Royce Wraith, valued at £235,000. The vehicles were removed once the ship was back in Southampton prior to the move to Falmouth.

HISTORIC J-CLASS RETURN AFTER 8O YEARS The J Class has accepted an invitation from the Organisers of the 2017 America’s Cup to participate in a J Class regatta during the AC35 event. All eight J Class yachts are expected in Bermuda, with a minimum of six anticipated to compete in the J Class regatta - the first time in history more than five J Class yachts have ever raced against each other. The current J Class fleet comprises seven yachts, including two of the original Js that raced for the America’s Cup. The seven J Class yachts sailing are: endeavour, hanuman, Lionheart, Rainbow, Ranger, Shamrock V and Velsheda. J8 is due to be launched in May 2015, taking the fleet to eight – the first time that eight Js have been sailing since 1934. “The J Class era of the America’s Cup is widely recognised as being among the high points in Cup history,” said Russell Coutts, director of the America’s Cup event Authority. “When racing for the America’s Cup in the 1930s, the J Class boats embodied grace and power with cutting-edge design and engineering. having the J Class join us in Bermuda will create a spectacular blend between the old and new.” Berthed at the centre of the Race Village, the J Class fleet will showcase the heritage and tradition of the America’s Cup. The yachts will also be at the heart of the action with their own exclusive four day regatta. www.jclassyachts.com

#CATCHOFTHEDAY
Members of the UK fishing industry are being encouraged to get on board with a campaign designed to champion the diversity and sustainability of many species landed by the UK fishing fleet in a twitter campaign from 16 – 20 March. the initiative, dubbed #CatchofTheDay, is being launched by the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations. to get involved in #CatchofTheDay, tweet your photos with the hashtag during the five days.
The biggest changes to the race management structure at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week in many years have been agreed by the organising yacht clubs of Cowes Combined Clubs. Sailing Director Stuart Quarrie says, “The idea is to have consistent race management for as much of the week as possible, in order to give a higher level of continuity and consistency.” Under the previous triumvirate system, three different groups of race officers ran most of the racing, with each group in charge for periods of just two or three days. however, the event had already started to move away from that model.
“These new changes are therefore evolution, not revolution,” says Stuart, “but they are still a big step forward. Since 1964 Cowes Week has become much more complex as the event has got bigger and at the same time competitors, understandably, demand better race management.” For the first time, the regatta will also have the use of two dedicated shortened course boats, which will not be tasked with any other roles. They will always be on standby for a quick deployment. The motivation for introducing many of these changes is to achieve improved continuity of race management throughout the Week,
and the Sailing Instructions have also come under close scrutiny. They have been simplified wherever possible, with standard Racing Rules of Sailing applying in many more situations than previously. As a result, the 2015 SIs will be around one-third shorter than in recent years, making them easier for both competitors and race officials to digest. While the underlying principles of the changes are now established, the detail of how it works will be analysed closely after the 2015 regatta to identify any improvements that can be made for the following year. Cowes Week takes place from 8 - 15 August.
BEDS On BOaRD
Beds on Board brings together boat owners and accommodation seekers. You can choose to list your boat or, if travelling, decide where you would like to stay. Beds on Board already have boats listed as far away as New Zealand. For sea lovers this offers a great alternative to the usual accommodation choices when travelling. The boats will remain in their mooring, so do not expect to be doing any sailing. Beds on Board co-founder Jason Ludlow says: “We offer owners the chance to offset their running costs and be a part of the rising share economy but also offer guests another way to stay that they may not have considered previously. I must emphasise that the boat doesn’t leave the dock at any stage.” www.bedsonboard.com
CRoWD funding is being adopted by the National Museum of the Royal Navy for the first time to raise funds for the completion of the conservation of First World War veteran vessel hMS M.33 in her centenary year. hMS M.33 is the sole surviving Royal Navy vessel from the Gallipoli campaign fought between April 1915 and January 1916 in what is now modern day Turkey. over 100,000 personnel from around the world lost their lives during the fierce campaign and the ship will be the backdrop to one of three events being commemorated nationally to mark the centenary when she opens on 6 August. In keeping with the centenary commemorations, a target of £19,150 has been set as part of a crowdfunding appeal and to reflect the significance of the anniversary date. This represents just under 10 per cent of the remaining amount, £250,000, to be raised by the Museum for the completion of the fundraising campaign. Matthew Sheldon, Project Director for the M33 launch, says: “Those donating to the crowdfunding campaign receive a number of benefits according to the level of their gift. These range from social media acknowledgement via ‘shout outs’, to free tickets, limited edition postcards up to special tours of the ship with an experienced curator.” “We describe her as a little ship with a big history and the beauty of crowdfunding is that you don’t need to contribute large amounts to ensure she is safe for the future.” The appeal is set to run for one month from 16 February on www.indiegogo.com/at/m33 or further details can be found via www.nmrn.org.uk.

THE CuRSE OF THE LOnESOmE mARInER WRECK OF THE WHALE SHIP ESSEX The Extraordinary and Distressing Memoir That Inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Foreword by Gilbert King / By Owen Chase / £23 / Zenith Press Owen Chase was the first mate on the illfated American whaling ship essex, which was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale in the southern Pacific Ocean in 1820. The crew spent months at sea in leaking boats and endured the blazing sun, attacks by killer whales and lack of food. The men were forced to resort to cannibalism before the final eight survivors were rescued. Chase recorded the tale of the ship’s sinking and the subsequent events with harrowing clarity in the narrative of the Most extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the whale-Ship essex. Herman Melville based his 1851 novel, Moby-Dick, on the sinking. This edition of Chase’s memoir is filled with art, photographs, maps and artifacts, along with memoirs of other participants
and the perspectives of historians, contemporary and modern. watch out for the film, In The Heart of the Sea, coming out this year and inspired by the sinking of the essex.

Ian becomes five times victor IAn williams has become the first skipper to win sailing’s world Match Racing Tour title five times. williams, who had previously won the title in 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012, overtakes veteran Australian sailor Peter Gilmour who also had four titles. williams and his GAC Pindar crew went into the final event of the tour, the Monsoon Cup, knowing that if he reached the final, the tour title would be his due to the six point lead he had accrued over the season. williams went up against Mathieu Richard in the final, comfortably beating the frenchman 3-0 to claim the Monsoon Cup. This represents another record for williams, as no other skipper has won the Monsoon Cup on three
occasions. Commenting on his fifth tour title victory, williams said: “It’s a really incredible feeling. The team deserve so much credit as we’ve been sailing very well all week. To have a record of 19-1 in such shifty conditions this week is pretty remarkable.” “It really is a dream come true and something I couldn’t have imagined when I started sailing on the south coast in the UK. when I decided to take up sailing professionally I dreamt of possibly winning one world title and certainly never thought I’d win five. This really vindicates my decision to choose professional sailing as a career.” www.gacpindar.com / www. facebook.com/teamgacpindar / www.twitter.com/gacpindar

WHEN the International Paralympic Committee announced the inclusion of badminton and Taekwondo in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games it was also officially confirmed that sailing and seven-a-side football were being dropped. The news sent shockwaves around the sailing world. The primary reason stated for this decision was that sailing “did not fulfil the IPC Handbook’s minimum criteria for worldwide reach” which specifies sports and disciplines must be widely and regularly practised in a minimum of 32 countries and three IPC regions to be considered for inclusion into the Paralympic Games. The RYA is unaware of the content of International Sailing Federation’s submission to the IPC, although did offer its support on a number of occasions towards building the case for sailing but was advised it was unnecessary. They RYA says they are therefore unaware of the specifics as to how the bid fell short, but it does appear that opportunities were missed to address the IPC’s concerns at a number of stages. The ISAF, as the recognised International Federation within the Paralympic movement, is the only body who can legitimately make representations to the IPC. ISAF, and its 139 Member National Authorities, are working together to
fight for sailing to be reinstated at the Paralympic Games. ISAF is asking sailors across the world to unite on behalf of all disabled sailors. They say letters of support should be sent to disabled@isaf.com and will be sent to the International Paralympic Committee with a complete package of information about Paralympic sailing. The RYA is urging other Member National Authorities to support ISAF in providing robust data where required in support of Paralympic and disability sailing activities in their countries, in order to build the case for sailing’s inclusion on the Paralympic Games programme.
THE DISAPPOINTMENT
Tim Hollingsworth, British Paralympic Association CEO, said of the announcement: “Whilst we understand the IPC making decisions across the whole sport programme, we are disappointed to see both sailing and 7 a-side football are not on the programme for Tokyo 2020. Both sports are concentrating on the build up to Rio 2016, and we will continue to work closely with them on this.” On hearing the decision of the IPC, three time Paralympian (2.4mR) and gold medallist at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, Bjornar Erikstad said: “For the Paralympic
Games, sailing should be there. In sailing you can be young, old, female, male and be on an equal playing field. It’s about understanding the environment and what’s around you that makes it unique. It has physical challenges and you have to be physically and mentally prepared.” The British Marine Federation has also voiced its disappointment at the decision pointing out that following the sailing successes at the 2012 London Games the UK witnessed a 10 per cent increase in the number of people taking up sailing. The BMF is very concerned at the loss of such a powerful tool for raising the profile of British sailing and other boating activities and the loss of such a unique platform for inspiring those with disabilities to take up the sport of sailing. Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, Skud © Copyright British Sailing Team
Sailing was first introduced at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games as a demonstrative sport before becoming a medal sport at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games. It is now practiced by athletes in over 70 countries who compete in three events, which are non-gender specified: single-person keelboats, three-person keelboats and two-person keelboats. At the last Paralympic Games, in London, 80 athletes competed in the three sailing medal events with the British team bringing home a gold (Helena Lucas, 2.4mR) and bronze (Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, SKUD 18). Helen’s was actually the first ever female winner of the male dominated Paralympic class and Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing gold medallist. Helen is hoping to repeat her success in the Paralympics in Rio 2016. Alexandra and Niki have continued their success since 2012 with second place at January’s ISAF Sailing World Cup in Miami. In the Sonar class at Miami Britain came fourth (John Robertson, Hannah Stodel, Steve Thomas) and sixth (Craig Wood, Steven Palmer, Liam Cattermole), while there was a second place for Megan Pascoe in the 2.4mR. Helen Lucas came in sixth in the same class. While sailing has only one Paralympics left another is watersport is making its
debut at Rio. There will be three men’s and three women’s events in kayak when the sport makes its Paralympic debut. Let’s hope the ISAF can convince the IPC that sailing deserves its place too. We would love to hear your thoughts. Send your comments to editor@allatsea.co.uk

LOOKING COOL
Clothing combined with technology is a growing trend and if you thought it wasn’t for you think again. Rohan’s summer collection includes Biteguard™ finish to defend against bites from ants, flies and disease carrying pests like ticks and mosquitoes. The clothes also feature UPF 40+ UV protection for an added shield from the sun’s rays. There are great looking clothes in the range and here we have chosen to mention the long sleeved, crease resistant men’s Sentry Shirt (£65). It comes in a choice of two casual plaid patterns and also uses a Dynamic Control fabric to keep you cool throughout the summer. We think the Sentry shirt will look great with the Trailblazer convertible trouser, which is available for both women and men. It is now available in a new Cargo colour and features Biteguard™, Dynamic Moisture Control™ to improve comfort in hot conditions and UVF40+ protection. We especially love these trousers because they can be converted into shorts by unzipping them just below the knee. www.rohan.co.uk

Q-BOPZ Racing Speaker
WIN me
Its name is a bit of a mouthful, but as a piece of kit to have onboard your boat you can’t fault it. This Bluetooth speaker is incredibly easy to use and has a great sound, especially considering its size (62 x 59mm). Its tough silicone skin, in the style of a tyre, makes it the perfect speaker to have on a boat, plus its suction cup means you can attach it to all kinds of surfaces. The switches and buttons are carefully hidden in the tyre, and in less than a minute it was paired to my device and I had Ed Sheeran singing loudly to the office. The only point to note is the volume and track change button is the same. To change the volume hold the plus and minus buttons down otherwise you’ll be changing the track as I did initially. It has a wireless range of 10m, gives up to seven hours of playback and comes with a USB to micro-USB charging cable. A definite thumbs up from the All At Sea team. £19.99 http://bit.ly/racingspeaker We have 1 Q-BOPZ Racing Speaker to give away. To be in with a chance of winning simply email your answer to the following question to editor@allatsea.co.uk with Speaker Competition in the subject header by March 27, 2015. What is the wireless range of the Racing Speaker?

A Flare For Safety Offshore Flare packs are a requirement of ORC Special Regulations for offshore sailors. Changes, which came into force on 1 January 2015, to the ORC Offshore Flare packs mean they no longer have to contain handheld white flares. Alistair Hackett, General Manager for Ocean Safety, explains: “Product development has moved on and there are now a number of preferred and lower risk non-pyrotechnic items on the market such as LED torches and LED flares which can be used instead. Ocean Safety recommends to customers that one or several of these should be carried on board to give additional accuracy to being seen in an emergency. The white flare is still a means of visual identification to illuminate the user’s presence on the water and can be purchased separately if required.”
AQUA GO
The ORC Offshore Flare Pack now consists of 4 x red parachute rocket flares, 4 x red handheld flares, 2 x bouyant smoke (orange) all contained in a Poly Bottle which floats, is portable and easy to stow. Alternatives to white flares include powerful lights such as the new Exposure MOB torch (see February All At Sea) or the LED Odeo Flare. www.oceansafety.com

GO EASY From Easy Lift Marine comes the ‘Cruising‘ version of their Easy Lift Outboard Motor Hoists, which takes just a couple of minutes to attach to a stanchion or guard rail ready to get the outboard onto the dinghy. The increased lifting arm length of the new ‘Cruising Easy Lift’ means that users can lower engines up to 25kgs onto the transom of an inflatable from
larger yachts, and the long reach is also useful for manoeuvring outboard motors onto the transoms of tenders with wider than average beams. The new ‘Cruising Easy Lift Outboard Hoist’ version also gives users more flexibility when deciding where to site the hoist, while still being easy to install with no special tools and drilling required. £149.95 www.outboardhoist.co.uk

A poWer revolutIon the new evinrude e-teC G2 outboard line-up features six 3.4-litre v6 two-stroke models ranging from 200 to 300 horsepower. the development process has taken four or five years with the evinrude team looking at all sectors from cars to motorbikes for inspiration and ideas. According to evinrude, the new e-teC G2 engines are the first 2-stroke outboard engines to be completely designed from scratch using direct fuel injection, rather than being a carbureted engine modified for direct injection. the outboards have a distinctive shape and interchangeable side panels that let the boat builder or the customer match the motor colour to their boat. the new profile is very vertical, and the typical bucket cowl is replaced with a composite exoskeleton that supports plastic panels on the top and sides. With the ability to change panels customers can match the engine to their boat creating a much improved visual link between the two, so that it becomes a part of the boat rather than an ‘add-on’. the panels are offered in five different colours (blue, silver, black, red and white) with fourteen accent stripe colours creating over 400 colour
combinations. You can view a number of evinrude e-teC G2 videos here: http://bit.ly/g2video www.brp.com / www.chooseyouretec.com

RYA FOCUS

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
BY EMMA SLATER
Staying Safe
The RYA Safety Advisory Notice 2015 offers a simple digest of critical safety issues, including those that have arisen from incidents in the past year, compiled for the leisure boater. BACK in January visitors to the Royal Yachting Association stand at the CWM FX London Boat Show picked up the latest edition of the RYA Safety Advisory Notice. First launched at the 2014 show, the newly refreshed second edition focuses on six key topics: personal location devices, communication, lifejackets and lifejacket servicing, running aground, weather forecasts and effective planning. It builds on the advice in the first edition, which covered the use of kill cords and prop guards, alcohol and boating, buoyancy aids and lifejackets, carbon monoxide poisoning and the proper registration of EPIRB and PLBs. The RYA Safety Advisory Group examines safety concerns and incidents throughout the year to consolidate lessons learnt and issue further advice where needed. As such, the information in the Safety Advisory Notice is reviewed annually, but where safety concerns are more immediate the RYA also issues periodic Safety Update alerts.
SO WHAT IS NEW? Personal location devices By now, we’re all pretty much convinced that Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons, better known as EPIRBs, are a good thing. The 2015 Safety Advisory Notice takes a closer look at personal location devices as another option for safety-minded sailors. The latest
A proper inspection should be carried out as soon as possible after any grounding
guidance strongly encourages their use to provide fast effective distress alerting and man overboard location for any kind of vessel. Communications As well as reminding boaters the importance of always keeping in touch, the new ‘communications’ section also introduces the RYA SafeTrx app. If you cruise in areas where mobile phone reception is available, particularly in dinghies and other small craft, you may find the RYA’s SafeTrx App useful to supplement your other communication equipment. As well as monitoring your boat journeys, this practical Smartphone App can alert your emergency contacts should you fail to return on time. Lifejacket and liferaft servicing We recommend that owners become familiar with the use of all of their safety equipment – not just lifejackets and liferafts, which should be regularly serviced according to the manufacturer’s instructions at an approved service agent. Our latest guidance also encourages sailors to practice hoisting storm sails, amongst other valuable top safety tips. Running aground Despite all our efforts to avoid making contact with the seabed, there are many reasons why a craft can run aground from basic human error to engine failure on a lee shore. This section of the Safety Advisory Notice highlights that a proper inspection should be carried out as soon as possible after any grounding. If there is any doubt about the seaworthiness of the boat, it should not be used.
Weather forecasts Checking the weather forecast before putting to sea is an obligation under SOLAS. After all, it is the weather that determines where the prudent boater goes, when they go or if they go at all. The forecast is a vital safety tool for all boaters whether you are in a dinghy or an ocean going yacht, but getting a weather forecast is only the start – you can find out more in the weather section of the Safety Advisory Notice 2015.
Visit our safety hub for your copy of the Safety Advisory Notice 2015 along with a wealth of practical advice and top tips at: rya.org.uk/go/safety Plan your day The final section of the revised Notice explores the different factors that can be the difference between a safe and enjoyable boating experience and an avoidable accident. We recommend thinking about what might cause injury to you and your crew, before deciding whether you are taking sensible steps to prevent it. Most incidents are preventable through proper planning and the overarching message here is clear… “safety does not happen by accident.” Incident prevention Our safety advice is aimed at helping boaters avoid trouble in the first place by getting them to think about themselves, their boat and their crew rather than simply prescribing a list of what equipment to carry when things go wrong. Stuart Carruthers, RYA Cruising Manager, says: “Getting afloat can be a lot of fun - but it can also be unpredictable and hazardous. By taking
The RYA SafeTrx app is a handy supplement to other communication equipment
simple precautions, you can make your time on the water even more enjoyable and significantly reduce your chances of getting into trouble. “Our Safety Advisory Notices provide essential guidance for anyone thinking about getting afloat for the first time, as well as some reminders and top tips for those more experienced on the water. The latest edition offers sound practical advice and once again highlights a range of current safety issues – from liferaft servicing and PLBs to running aground and weather forecasts. “It’s important that our guidance and training courses never stop developing to take into account the dynamic world of boating. Reviewing the Notice annually allows the RYA to remain responsive to emerging safety concerns.”
sailing boats, windsurfing, jet skis, powerboats or motor cruisers. “We deliver over 100 courses to professional and recreational boaters, which are right up-to-date with safety issues, regulations and emerging trends. We urge all members of the boating community to pick up a copy of the Safety Advisory Notice and undertake the necessary training to help you be safe and enjoy more,” says Stuart Carruthers.
Keep Discovering Whilst the first and second editions of the RYA Safety Advisory Notice both provide sound advice on a broad range of key safety issues, we know all too well that accidents often happen as a result of venturing beyond our levels of knowledge and ability. Knowing our own limits, based on experience and knowledge, is vital. RYA courses can help to extend that knowledge – whether you’re interested in Love Boating? 5 MINUTES WITH…
Banjo broke the Governor’s Cup Race record
Bram Weller, Chairman of the Governor’s Cup YaCht raCe
the Governor’s cup yacht race, from simon’s town, south africa to Jamestown, st helena, took place for the last time in its current format in December. we take five minutes to catch up with bram weller, chairman of the Governor’s cup yacht race, to find out more about the race and how the future of st helena will affect the next race.
First held in 1996, the bi-annual 1,700 nautical mile downwind ocean yacht race is claimed to be an entry on many sailors’ ‘bucket list’ due to its exciting sailing to a unique destination – st Helena, an island currently only accessible by one of the last operating royal Mail ships, the rMs st Helena. However, this is set to change with the opening of a new airport on st Helena due in February 2016 and the subsequent decommissioning of the rMs st Helena.
Describe your role as part of the 2014 Governor’s cup yacht race...
While the accent is on fun and camaraderie, this eight to fourteen day one-way handicap race takes the boats past Cape Point and to one of the most remote and extraordinary islands in the world, st Helena. Once at their destination, the crews enjoy traditionally welcoming st Helena hospitality and the wonders of this remote island. the next challenge is leaving; the only way off the island is by sea – either on the last operating royal Mail ship, returning on an upwind sail to south Africa, or cruising onwards across the Atlantic. the five night return journey onboard the rMs provides fun and laughter, plus days and nights filled with traditional mail ship deck games and entertainment. the diversity of the race is also reflected in the race participants. the latest entries saw family cruising boats with wedding anniversaries and birthdays being celebrated out at sea, a folding trimaran competing with the fast downwind racing yachts vying for line honours, entries hailing from Australia and New Zealand and saints returning home.
with such a variety of yachts enterinG the race, how is the winner DeciDeD?
the winner is decided through a handicap system, which is based on a complex formula taking in to consideration specifics such as yacht size, weight, sails and the time taken to complete the course. the line winner is the first yacht to finish the race, irrespective of size, but the overall winner is often only known once the last yacht has actually crossed the line.
what is the most challenGinG part of the race? Perhaps the most challenging part of the race is the first leg, the one out of False Bay. Often in December the south Easterly winds are strong, and the yachts have to sail into the wind until they can round Cape Point. that said, one must remember that the winds can change and vary in strength, so you literally have to wait until the actual start before you know what to expect. then it’s the long passage to the island and trying to determine where
the Governor’s Cup Yacht race is an event organised by False Bay Yacht Club, simon’s town, south Africa and Enterprise st Helena. i and my team are responsible for ensuring that the competing yachts are fully prepared for the race and the start of the race is managed with precision. this includes publishing the Notice of race, ensuring the yachts are safe to sail, liaising with the sHYC Committee where the race will finish and also liaising with the rMs st Helena, the ship that currently plays a pivotal role in the organisation of the event.
The remote, but beautiful, St Helena
how Do you ensure competitors’ safety DurinG the race? safety is of upmost importance, with the race being given Controlled Event status by south African sailing (the controlling body of sailing in south Africa) and every precaution is taken to ensure the safety of competing crews. On entering the race all yachts and crew have to be certified to go offshore with a Yachtmaster (or two Coastal) skipper and Category A safety Certificate, in addition to completing a 200 mile shake down voyage. During the race all yachts are required to be equipped with a long range UHF two way communication radio or a satphone, a short range VHF two way communication radio and an Emergency Position indicating radio Beacon. All yachts are inspected immediately before the race to ensure they are adequately prepared and provisioned for the voyage.
what happens on st helena once the race has finisheD?
how woulD you position the Governor’s cup yacht race?
the Governor’s Cup Yacht race is recognised as being different from other yacht races. it attracts a range of yachts from irC ocean racers, to downwind multihull and monohull cruisers.
the best winds are until you are actually in the trades and they tend to be fairly regular. the final approach to the island is more of a frustration than a challenge. After having been at sea for nearly two weeks, and having seen no other land, the island once spotted seems to take for ever to approach. Once you are close enough finding the finish line and the associated land marks is also a challenge, especially if it is your first time.
Black Cat, a Dudley Dix 38, were the overall winners of the 2014/15 Governor’s Cup Yacht Race
it’s party time! Once the yacht finishes the crew normally take time out to rest and catch up on sleep and clean their boat. then there is an awesome island to explore and the st Helena Organising Committee organise tours, set up sporting events and other social activities. the crews and their families also get to mix with each other and the locals and generally it’s a short holiday before the return trip to south Africa or for some continuing on across the ocean. the final event of the race is the Prize Giving Ceremony, which is organised by the st Helena Organising Committee.
with an airport Due to open on st helena in 2016 anD the race now beGinninG to receive international awareness, how will this affect the race in future years?
it’s with a heavy heart that this was the last time the race took place in its current format after eighteen years. since the inception of the race, the rMs st Helena has played an important role, shipping family and friends to the island, and then shipping them, some of the yachts and their crews back to south Africa. the option of being able to ship the yachts back has been a strong draw to compete for many owners/skippers as the passage back is against the wind all the way and can be quite uncomfortable. However, i believe that the race will grow in stature and attract more entries in the coming years with the opening of the airport on st Helena. the availability of flights will offer more flexibility with participants being able to fly back home after completing the race, which will considerably reduce the time spent away from home and work.
anD finally, Do you wish you haD competeD last year?
Most definitely, but at least i get to do the next best thing and that is to travel to st Helena onboard the rMs st Helena where i will meet and greet the yachts as they finish!
race results
After an exciting seventeen day downwind race from simon’s town in south Africa to Jamestown, st Helena, Black Cat, a Dudley Dix 38, were the overall winners of the 2014/15 Governor’s Cup Yacht race. Kevin Webb and his team on Banjo broke the Governor’s Cup race record and won the multi-hull section, taking line honours with a time of 9 days 13 hours, 53 minutes and 36 seconds.

ADAM PARNELL, SALCOMBE HARBOUR MASTER
Adam Parnell has been Salcombe’s Harbour Master since May 2014 and is loving his role. TELL US ABOUT YOUR MARITIME BACKGROUND. I’ve always been interested in the sea – before I joined the Royal Navy I spent my free time either canoeing, sailing, windsurfing or sub-aqua diving, and although I joined the Navy as an engineer I transferred to the Warfare branch so that I could spend more time at sea and eventually got to command two warships, which I loved.
DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO A JOB INVOLVING THE SEA?
Absolutely! I joined the Navy from school and when I left I wanted to keep my links with the sea, so I embarked on a distance-learning Diploma for Harbour Masters while looking for suitable opportunities to arise. Luckily the Salcombe HM role came up very quickly.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A HARBOUR MASTER?
Because the role is both broad and varied. Broad because it encompasses safety, estate management, marketing,
communications, HR and line management, customer relations, finance, commerce and supply management. Varied because one moment I can be advising someone on the safest way to navigate their vessel up the harbour and the next I can be writing a strategy paper looking ahead 35 years.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB AS HARBOUR MASTER AT SALCOMBE ENTAIL?
Salcombe Harbour hosts approximately 1,500 resident vessels and 6,000 visiting vessels per annum as well as hundreds of dinghies, yawls, canoes, paddle boards and bathers. My responsibility is that everyone who wants to enjoy the harbour can do so safely. Risk assessment and mitigation is a large part of the job, which at its heart is a very peopleoriented business. Protection of the environment is also a big part of the role, so that I can hand on the harbour in as good – if not better – state to my successor (which hopefully won’t be for several decades).
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES IN THE ROLE?
Making sure that everyone stays safe and can enjoy the harbour –perhaps by wearing their lifejackets and kill cords or keeping their vessel’s speed below the limit - without being too intrusive, interfering or coming across as Victor Meldrew.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECTS OF YOUR JOB?
It is impossible to pin it down. I work in one of the UK’s most beautiful harbours, with an excellent team, meeting amazing people and helping people stay safe while enjoying
everything that the harbour has to offer. I’ve only been here ten months but I’ve been really touched by how friendly and welcoming everyone, residents and visitors alike, has been. And I’ve really enjoyed watching how the harbour looks and how its character changes almost every week.
WHAT’S COMING UP IN 2015 FOR YOU?
2015 will be a busy year for us. We’ve just been recognised as an eco-port by the European Sea Ports Organisation, which is exciting because we can use that to further raise awareness of the environment in 2015. We are also hoping to run a number of safety roadshows to encourage people to wear their lifejackets and kill cords correctly.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
I was been inspired by Natasha Lambert when she visited Salcombe last July. I found her courage, tenacity and determination to enjoy life, despite setbacks, truly humbling.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?
If you’ve ever thought of visiting Salcombe but have been put off by the famous (or should that be infamous) Bar across the harbour entrance, don’t be. We had it surveyed after the Valentine’s Day storm in 2014 and found that it is much deeper than it used to be. The UKHO say they had never had to issue a chart correction to advise mariners that there was more water than charted before.
We look at everyday heroes who tackled amazing feats such as marathon running over seven continents,

EXPERTS’ FORUM
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
BOOTCAMP FITNESS FOR SAILING
SHIP SHAPE
Your boat may be ready for the new season but is your body? Senior fitness expert and Bootcamp manager Kenna Hockley from Shape Up Studios in Lymington talks about the benefits of a bootcamp.
I imagine by now you have either prepared your boat or certainly you will have a plan in place about preparing your boat for the season ahead. Getting it in the best shape means more time on the water to help reach your performance goals for 2015. Have you thought about your fitness, though, and incorporating this into your overall campaign for the year? Whether you are looking to win a national or world championship or simply take part in your club racing or cruising events, fitness and nutrition can mean the difference between a good day on the water and a bad one. A bootcamp is a concentrated range of activities across the board including the use of Power Plates, HIIT circuits, Spin studio and the great outdoors. Bootcamps are designed to take you out of your comfort zone and help you challenge yourself both physically and mentally. A bootcamp is an efficient, targeted way of making a change by kick starting or further progressing your fitness levels to help you reach a certain strength, agility and/or weight in order to compete at your peak. The bootcamp you choose should be tailor-made to accommodate your individual requirements. Pre-camp consultations and preparation ensure that in addition to existing levels of fitness being considered, personalities, goals, likes and dislikes and any anxieties and fears are
taken into account during the meticulous planning of the activity schedule. Look for sport specific bootcamps as these provide fitness training and also the nutritional element, making sure you have the right fuel inside you prior, during and after the event, to be strong enough to perform at your best. Why not get a group from your sailing club and sign up together; it all adds to the competitive edge.
Are you tempted?
Here is a checklist to help you choose the right bootcamp. ■ Make sure it is a bootcamp and not a health spa retreat. ■ Do they offer sports specific bootcamps? ■ Is there a pre-consultation about your requirements? ■ In addition to the training do they provide ongoing fitness and nutritional advice? ■ Is there a planned programme and help with how to continue once the bootcamp has finished? ■ Are the trainers experienced and knowledgeable? ■ Does it look like it is designed to push the boundaries but also be fun?

t s e b s Southampton bite ALL AT SEA MARCH 2015
Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.
During the chillier months it’s good to take the boat out for a short run, fire the engines, flap the sails, but with something hot at the end to make it all worthwhile. I have a soft spot for Southampton, as I spent my formative years down on the Beaulieu River and if you are Solent based it makes a good day trip to take in a movie, do some shopping or stay over.

BEST TWEETERS:
@SolentShowcase @BBCRadioSolent @SotonEvents The cosy interior at Pitcher & Piano
STEAM up to Ocean Village where Picture House’s Harbour Lights has a great view over the marina. The staff are fun, the wine list well researched and the pizzas not bad at all. Film quiz once a month on Tuesday nights is great fun and their cakes and cookies go down well with a nice cup of tea. I was working in Southampton when Ocean Village was born. We built the Royal Southampton Yacht Club and the traditional townhouses on the pier. I now look on with admiration and incredulity at the high rise apartments that thrust an ‘I told you so’ digit skywards. According to the Sunday Times, Southampton boasts one of the best returns in buy-to-let in the country, and Ocean Village is the top earner.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE
Once you’re tied up there are many choices: the afore mentioned Harbour Lights, the waterfront bars of Banana Wharf and Pitcher & Piano. The latter being my favourite; it is a clean, fun place to watch the sun go down and enjoy happy hour or something more nourishing. No 4 Canute Road is my absolute favourite in this area and I would head here for a great coffee (Anvil for those who notice) or perhaps their range of nibbles and drinks before heading off
to the cinema. My top tip is to get up early on a bright morning and do Jane Austen’s walking trail that takes you around the more interesting buildings of old Southampton, then have brunch at No 4. This area is seeing some dramatic building and the area around Queen’s Square some pleasant gentrifying. The choice of restaurants found along Oxford Street has always been good, but my favourites remain The White Star and Simon’s at Oxfords (used to be simply Oxfords). If you stay at Town Quay you have the ever buzzing Margaritas on-site, but you can step over the road to Regatta for tapas or to Ennios for one of the best value Sunday roasts cooked by an Italian restaurant. Further on you have the Pig in the Wall – mentioned in our Southampton Boat Show round-up. Just piggy bits here (cold meats and cheeses) and a decent drink from the bar with nice surroundings. I quite like the afternoon
tea and slice of cake but they have competition with Harbour Lights’ chocolate and chilli cake and No 4’s fresh pastries.
SHAMROCK QUAY
If you want a more sheltered night, then a quieter destination can be found at Shamrock Quay. It is tucked up the River Itchen, where the Yellow Welly Café and new kid on the block Quay 15 are based. I worked at Shamrock Quay back in the day when Dean & Dyball’s development wing was based here and it was an unexpected oasis of productivity in the ugly docklands area that is now home to Saints Stadium. Quay 15 is rated number one on TripAdvisor, and I know we need to read reviews with intelligence and a pinch of coarsely ground, locally sourced rock salt, but Quay 15 is worth booking. If you can wait for a free Saturday and try their taster menu then you are in for a treat. Some serious young chefs here know what they are doing and enjoy working with seasonal, quality produce. The full review will be on the blog later in the spring – as I can’t get in yet either. (hopshikesandbites.blogspot.co.uk)

Crab and tomato is just one of those perfect pairings. The addition of semi-dried tomatoes (a useful storecupboard staple) to the accompanying salad will sweeten up any store-bought tomatoes that might fall a bit short in the flavour department. Combine both fresh and dried tomatoes in a bowl, nicking a little bit of the spring onions and torn basil to mix through, and season to taste. Place the crabmeat in another bowl, and mix in the rest of the spring onions and basil, the hard-boiled eggs, the lemon juice and the mayonnaise. Season to taste again, then pile it on to the toasted sourdough. Serve with the tomato salad.
FOR TWO ■ Handful of cherry tomatoes, halved ■ 1 tbsp semi-dried tomatoes in olive oil, halved ■ 1 tbsp spring onions, trimmed and chopped ■ Handful of basil leaves, torn ■ 1 dressed crab, or tinned ■ White crabmeat ■ 2 hard-boiled eggs, shelled and chopped ■ Juice of 1/4 lemon ■ 2 tbsp mayonnaise ■ 2 slices of sourdough ■ Bread, toasted ■ Salt and pepper

Sailing then and now
A Class Act
The Merlin Rocket Class has, over the years, gone from strength to strength by moving with the times and offering flexibility in its design.

LATeR this year, the country will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the long awaited return to peace. From the sailing perspective, the end of the wartime years also marks the start of the modern dinghy sailing era. Before the war, racing in small boats was seen as very much an elitist sport for the young men of the day, with a clear distinction being made between the gentlemen and the ‘players’. This meant that people such as the boatbuilders were not even allowed in to the posher yacht clubs thanks to their status. One such individual, whose patina of sawdust saw him excluded from the social side of sailing, was Putney based boat-builder Jack Holt. As the war drew to a close, Jack rightly predicted the peacetime growth of dinghy sailing into an easily achievable leisure pursuit. KATE IS BORN He set out to design and build a 14ft sailing dinghy that would be accessible
to all, a quick and exciting boat, yet one that would offer affordable fun. His first attempt at the new design was clinker planked in black market timber and was called Kate, a play on words that reflected the ‘syndi-kate’ that were backing the project. Kate was a great boat but was almost ‘too racy’ to be a popular boat. Building on this experience, Jack returned to the drawing board, with the result being a wonderful fusion of form and function called Merlin (a boat that is now on permanent display at the National Maritime Museum at Falmouth). With the backing of Yachting World magazine, Merlin would give its name to a new class of boats that quickly spread up and down the Thames. ROCKET LAUNCH Meanwhile, in Nottingham, another dinghy building enterprise, Wyche and Coppock, were building a very similar boat, the Rocket. By merging the best qualities of the two boats, the 1951
2015 will see the start of events that will celebrate the 70th anniversary of that iconic launching of the first boat on the Thames marriage resulted in the formation of the National Merlin Rocket class. The ready availability of this new boat coincided with the rise in private car ownership and soon Merlin Rockets were being raced right across the country. The Merlin Rockets were so much more than just another dinghy, for they gave dinghy sailing a template for the administration of the class through a volunteer Committee and a linked series of events around the country that would run right through the season. What made the Merlin Rocket special was the freedom that the class offered, as rather than being just a single

design, the rules of the class allowed considerable latitude in the shape of the hull shape and the layout of the rig.
CHANGING TIMES As the golden era of dinghy racing started to come to an end in the late 1970s, the healthy growth in the Merlin Rocket class, that had seen over 3,000 boats registered in just 30 years, slowed to a trickle. By the 1990s the rise of new classes looked to be forcing the Merlin Rocket out to the unpopular margins of dinghy racing. However, a class that had already survived for 50 years was made of stronger stuff. With the adoption of carbon fibre masts and FRP hulls, the fortunes of the Merlin Rocket class were revitalised, to the point that today, it represents the very best of competition afloat and après-sail activities ashore. 2015 will see the start of events that will celebrate the 70th anniversary of that iconic launching of the first boat up on the Thames. Many of the biggest of these events will be at sailing clubs around our shores. When you are out afloat if you see a large fleet of dinghies, that at the same time looks both old and right up to date, raise a glass to them and join with us at All at Sea in wishing them a happy 70th birthday, with best wishes for continued success in the years to come.
DESIGN FREEDOM This freedom would prove a huge attraction to the designers, innovators and forward thinkers, who quickly made their mark in the class. Their efforts saw

a narrow hulled boat that had been at home on rivers and lakes get beamier, then beamier still until a limit of 7ft 2in was imposed. Had the boat grown any wider, it would have been too beamy to tow behind a car. At the same time, developments that were taking place in the Park Gate loft of Bruce Banks Sails saw the shape of the mainsail changing from a conventional shape, where the top of the sail makes a ‘pin head’, to one where the mainsail was a strange quadrilateral shape. These two features, the exaggerated beam of the boat and the square mainsail, were joined by one other notable difference from other classes. At that time many boats were changing to the smooth skin of a GRP hull, but the Merlin Rockets retained their clinker construction.

MINI MASTER CLASS PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
THE Masterclass
ARE YOU COVERED? Boat insurance specialists and RYA member benefit provider Bishop Skinner Marine answer a few of the most common boat insurance questions.
WHY DO YOU NEED BOAT INSURANCE?
While it is not usually a legal requirement on most waters, having appropriate cover makes sound financial sense. Marine mortgage companies, for instance, insist on compulsory insurance as part of their money lending process. However, there are two stand out reasons why boat insurance is not a ‘would like to have’ but a ‘must have’: 1. To protect your capital investment against loss or damage which ultimately could result in a large and costly repair bill if the worst were to happen. 2. Having adequate boat insurance can help protect you against any third party liability for injury or damage caused by you or your vessel. (Third party liability is usually the most frequent claim we receive when it comes to boat insurance.)
WHAT CAN INFLUENCE THE PREMIUM PAYABLE?
Each type of vessel will attract a different level of risk, so just like car insurance, boats are usually categorised according to their vessel type and risk.
Insurance is not usually a legal requirement but unfortunately none of us can predict when we might need it
WHAT FEATURES SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN MY POLICY?
The level of premium should not be the sole deciding factor. Try and strike a balance between costs vs. benefits. Check the policy covers cruising grounds you will be sailing in
In general, the actual size of the boat isn’t as important as its value, how easily it could be stolen and the potential for damage. If your boat is trailered and spends a large amount of time safely tucked away on your drive, you’ll probably pay a different premium than if it was stored at a marina. The area in which you keep and use your boat will also influence the level of premium you pay and may have restrictions on cover that are subject to local weather conditions. Finally the experience of the owner/users, the type of use and any previous claims experiences are all taken into consideration when calculating the premium.
First for service
■ All policies are different, so make sure you choose one that provides the cover you want and need. Handy tip - assess the most expensive parts of your boat and check that your policy provides cover for damage to these, as well as what deductions may apply in the event of a claim. ■ Are any replacement costs issued on a new-for-old basis? ■ Look out for any exclusions in your policy. All policies have them, so check your wording very carefully. ■ Ensure that the policy covers any cruising grounds you wish to sail in. ■ Finally, make sure the insurer is authorised and approved by the regulatory body of the country in which they are based; here it is the Financial Conduct Authority.
BBMS

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL BOAT INSURANCE POLICY USUALLY INCLUDE? Any physical damage covered by a boat insurance policy will usually include equipment such as hull, sails, machinery, furnishings, on-board equipment and the trailer if applicable.
Standard cover generally provides: ■ Accidental damage, including fire, theft and malicious damage, sinking, stranding, collisions and salvage costs. ■ Damage to engines. ■ Transit risks up to 30 feet in length. ■ Lifting and launching risks. ■ Loss or damage caused by latent defects. ■ Frost. ■ Personal effects. Damage to mast and rigging whilst racing can be purchased for an additional premium. Third Party provides protection for you, or authorised persons using your boat,
from claims made by third parties for death or injury or damage to third party property for which you may become legally labile.
WHAT ISN’T COVERED ON A STANDARD POLICY?
Typical policy exclusions include: ■ Damage caused by wear and tear. ■ Wilful misconduct. ■ Loss of value due to age of vessel. ■ Losses caused by corrosion osmosis. ■ Mast, spars and sails whilst racing unless the policy has been extended. ■ Damage to machinery following breakdown. ■ Theft unless the right security devices or locks are fitted. ■ The policy excess relating to damage caused by you and also on any third party claims.
FINAL CHECKS
Ensure you review any potential policy in detail before you commit to purchase. By undertaking a thorough analysis of every possible scenario, you should be able to get the right cover for your vessel and enjoy peace of mind when sailing without worry. Tide Over GUESS THE ANCHORAGE
From the days of sail and with special reference to the English Channel where outward bound ships could make very little progress against the incoming tidal stream and the prevailing south west wind. In such conditions they would frequently tide over or anchor for those hours when the tide was against them. Hence to rest up and let the difficulties sort themselves out.

SMALL AT SEA
BOAT BIT S CH R A E S D R O W Know your knots JUST FOR KIDS
A reef knot is used for tying a rope round something or tying two ropes together (as long as they are the same thickness). The reef knot is traditionally used for tying reef points in a sail. (You put a reef in a sail to make it smaller in strong winds). 1. Start by forming a half knot…
● Take the two end of a line, one in each hand. ● Cross the right hand working end over the left hand working end. ● Tuck it under and out to the left. ● Pull the two working ends to tighten or adjust to size.
2. Pull the half knot as tight as necessary to form a suitable binding around the object you are using. ● Now form another Half Knot on top of the first one, taking care to start by crossing the now left hand working end
over the right before tucking and pulling up tight. ● ‘Right over left, left over right’, or the other way round, it makes no difference! ● You should now have two interlocking bights with the working ends and stand parts emerging beside each other and the knot lying flat.
3. To untie
●Especially if it is wet and has been under load, give the working end and the standing part of one end a sharp pull apart to capsize the knot. Now it’s your turn to have a go. This one might be a bit
tricky to start with but with practice you’ll get it!

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS
MAYFLOWER MARINA Mayflower Marina Richmond Walk, Plymouth Devon PL1 4LS Tel: 01752 556633 info@mayflowermarina.co.uk www.mayflowermarina.co.uk
OVERLOOKING the historic Royal William Yard and with magnificent views over the River Tamar towards the Mt Edgcumbe Country Park it is somewhat bizarre that Mayflower Marina is only a stone’s throw away from Plymouth’s City centre. Mayflower Marina started life as Ocean Quay Marina in the 1970s and was one of the early marina village developments. Sadly for the then developer turbulent economic times, which saw inflation hit a record 27 per cent, resulted in failure and the property, including the marina, was placed in administration. At the time of administration the marina was fairly full and had the usual eclectic mix of berth holders including some entrepreneurial businessmen with a passion for boating. An option to buy the beleaguered estate from the administrators was negotiated and after numerous berth holder meetings the funds were raised by a consortium consisting entirely of berth holders. In 1980, Sailport Plc, the new owners of the marina, became incorporated and the marina was renamed Mayflower Marina.
One of the incentives for investment was reduced rate berthing and ‘a say in how the marina was run’. An attractive proposition at a time when escalating marina fees started to occupy considerable chunks of editorial in the yachting press. The marketing strap line “run by the berth holders for the berth holders” struck a chord and berth occupancy steadily increased. Since those interesting early days Mayflower Marina has gone from strength to strength. Still under the same ownership and run under the same basic principles, the marina enjoys a uniquely friendly atmosphere. Proudly independent and holding The Yacht Harbour Associations prestigious 5 Gold Anchor Award for facility and customer service, the marina has added the inaugural British Coastal Marina of the Year Award 2014 and again in 2015. The most unique point about Mayflower Marina is the option to buy shares in the marina. Each share currently gives an allowance against berthing of £600 and a hoisting discount of 12.5 per cent per share up to a maximum of 50 per cent and ‘a say in how their marina is run’.
FACILITIES
THE marina has undergone numerous development works in the last twelve years and these works include increasing the water area leased from the Duchy of Cornwall and extending the boatyard in 2001, 2006 and in 2009 to the limit of the freehold. All the marina pontoons have been replaced over the last twelve years as part of a rolling programme of renewals. Twelve residential apartments have been built over the marina’s chandlery and the profit from this enabled a new marina office to be built and the purchase, amongst other things, of a new state-of-theart 33 tonne boat hoist. At Mayflower Marina any profits are reinvested and this explains why they have been able to continue with capital improvements throughout the recent recession.
The little restaurant Jolly Jacks, run by Sally and Sue, is a success story in its own right. There’s always something fun going on and a menu to suit, be it a lazy Sunday lunch, a rollicking Sea Shanty sing along evening or just good honest food in good company. The bathroom block enjoys something of a cult following. Nicknamed the ‘Superloos’ they afford the yachtsman a little luxury: powerful showers with plenty of hot water, lavatory, wash hand basin, underfloor heating all in fully tiled bespoke cubicles. Mayflower Marina is a member of TransEurope Marinas – a group that offers member berth holders a 50 per cent berthing discount when visiting other member marinas within the group. There are currently about 32 member marinas in the UK and a further 38 in Europe.

ACCESS
MOST berth holders use private vehicles to access the marina. The A38 dual carriageway links with the M5 motorway at Exeter some 45 minutes away. The drive to the marina from the A38 takes ten to fifteen minutes. Berth holders are issued with a fob to get in and out of the car park as they please. For visitors a token system is in place. There are regular bus, coach and rail services to Plymouth and the railway station is approximately ten minutes away. To access by sea, on entering Plymouth Sound via the eastern or western entrance stay to the western side of the sound heading between Mt Edgecumbe and Drakes Island. Enter the bridge channel and once abeam of Devils Point, Mayflower Marina will appear to starboard. The distance from the breakwater to the
marina is approximately 1 nm. In heavy weather mariners are advised to use the western entrance of the breakwater to enter Plymouth Sound. In addition the unlit Shag Stone rock is a real hazard at night for the unwary. If in doubt use the western entrance. Commercial and military shipping enter the Sound at regular intervals throughout the year. Skippers should maintain a proper look out when approaching and entering the Sound. Longroom Port Control uses VHF Ch14 for routine communications. Leisure users should keep a listening watch on this channel when leaving or entering the Sound. The Bridge Channel is a convenient short cut to enter the River Tamar for small craft of draft 2m or less. The Bridge is marked by four lit beacons. Navigation hazards exist either side of the bridge so vessels must stay in the channel. On the ebb tide, particularly on Springs, a strong
Plymouth is in the enviable position of offering a host of cruising options for sailors’ varying ambitions.
The seaward facing side of Mayflower Marina is surrounded by a purpose built 4m wide heavy displacement floating concrete breakwater. The largest size of vessel the marina can accommodate is about 25m LOA with a draft of about 6m. In all the marina has a shade under 400 berths. Standard berth sizes are 6m, 7.5m, 9m, 10m 10.5m, 12m, 13.5m and there are larger berths on the hammerheads of the various piers and a number of alongside berths. All berths have access to 16 amp shore power and fresh water. Mayflower Marina’s remote control boat hoist has a capacity of 33 tonnes and features an integral mast crane with a maximum capacity of 1.5 tonnes.

Plymouth is in the enviable position of offering a host of cruising options for sailors’ varying ambitions. For those looking for something very close to the marina, Cawsand, a quaint Cornish seaside village is adjacent to the western end of the breakwater just a mile from the marina. Complete with wood fringed shore and a sandy beach it is perfect for a swim, a dinghy trip ashore for an ice cream of a pasty or to just sit aboard and watch the world go by. For a gentle day sail the River Yealm is ideal. Some four miles to the east of the breakwater it is one of the most picturesque and tranquil places one
could hope to visit. Anchoring at the mouth of the Yealm by Cellars beach is particularly lovely in calm weather. Further upstream harbour authority moorings are offered for overnight or longer term visitor berthing. Salcombe lies 22 miles to the east of the breakwater whilst Looe and Fowey lie 11 and 22 miles respectively to the west. To the west, Falmouth and the Helford River (39 miles), Penzance (64 miles) and the Isles of Scilly (92 miles) are fabulous options if the weather is favourable whilst to the East Dartmouth (35 miles) and St Peter Port, Guernsey (70 miles) via Salcombe (22 miles) are all options that will reward the cruising sailor.

Mayflower Marina’s onsite bar and restaurant Jolly Jacks constantly receives excellent reviews but there is plenty of choice in the immediate environs of the marina. In the Royal William Yard there is Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen, also in the Yard are Wagamama’s, Le Bistrot Pierre, Las Iguanas, Seco Lounge, The Bakery and many more. Check out www.visitplymouth.co.uk/eating-out/byarea/royal-william-yard The Plymouth Gin Distillery is worth a visit (plymouthdistillery.com/bar-diningexperience.php).
THINGS TO DO
Plymouth has more historical and interesting facts than you could shake a stick at. Behind Mayflower Marina on Mount Wise is a memorial dedicated to Captain Robert Falcon Scott – one of Devonport’s famous sons. On 29th March 2012, the centenary of his ill-fated voyage, the memorial was rededicated by Princess Anne. Plymouth’s iconic Smeaton’s Tower became the blueprint for lighthouse construction – it is based on the sturdiness of an oak tree.

Sweet Pudding Treat Match the crowning glory of a special dinner with a rich, delicious dessert wine.
INTRODUCING a sippable dessert wine for the pudding course seems to be a forgotten ritual, even at the grandest yacht club events. Diners seem to prefer to stay with an easy-drinking red through the pudding and cheese courses, whichever way round you have them. So why not try a revival of dessert wines at home? Dessert wines, also drunk as apéritifs in continental Europe, are sweet and fortified with added spirit, sometimes a grappa, mostly brandy to raise the alcohol level to 15 per cent abv and above. Typical grapes used are Muscat, Semillon and Grenache.
THE ‘NOBLE ROT’
The grapes are left late on the vine well into the autumn until they develop a mould called the ‘noble rot’, which generates flavour. Harvesting is very tricky as they have to be picked before the mould turns into ‘grey rot’, making the grapes useless. The late-picked grapes get quite shrivelled to look like raisins. On pressing, the liquid yield is less but the sugar content high which produces more alcohol. This, along with maturing time, is what pushes the production cost and retail prices up. Like all wines, dessert wines range from the elegant and quite expensive to the relatively cheap.
France's Mediterranean coastline, a few miles from the Spanish border - next stop Barcelona. They are made predominantly from Grenache grapes, late harvested with high sugar content. The maceration (soaking) period can last for six weeks to reach a 16 per cent alcohol level. This is followed by maturation in American oak barrels for at least twelve months. The nose is baked fruits, prunes and sweet spices and the taste full bodied and subtly sweet, comparable possibly to the younger, fruitier styles of port or competing with Madeiras. For this reason, some Banyuls wines will enhance certain cheeses as well.

IN THE DRINK
www.allatsea.co.uk
One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.
We had guests who appreciate good food and wines around for lunch recently and were happily sipping a bargainpriced Spanish white Moscatel de Valencia with our lemon meringue pie when it ran out. All was not lost. Delving into the inner reaches of the drinks store, we found a new bottle of red Banyuls ‘vin doux naturel’. And, naturally, this led to a mini tasting session! Banyuls wines are from the town of that name at the western end of
The one we enjoyed, Reflets de France Banyuls Traditionnel, was imported by hand and not to be found in regular supermarkets over here. Specialist online wine merchant Yapp Bros has a very similar offer, Domaine la Tour Vieille Banyuls Réserva, 16.5 per cent at £19.50 a 75cl bottle (www.yapp.co.uk).
SPANISH STARTER
The Spanish Moscatel de Valencia we started with is from the lower half of the Spanish east coast, a bright pale straw colour with floral aroma and taste, 15 per cent and less than £5 a 75cl bottle from Tesco. Moscatel de Chipiona is a very nice paler wine, fresh, crisp and sweet, from the south east corner of Spain in the Jerez region, 15 per cent at £6.45 for a 50cl bottle from Waitrose. Leaving price aside, the Banyuls Traditionel gets my taste-test vote.
