The All Wales Boat Show is taking a break in 2016 but it will be replaced by another show in June. It was announced last September that the All Wales show would again take place in Pwllheli. Now, when it returns in 2017 it will take place at Conwy Quays Marina. Organiser Davina Carey-evans says the show, being held over the weekend of 9 – 11 June next year, promises to be bigger thanks to the support from a new group of sailing and watersports enthusiasts putting it together. This year, in place of the All Wales show and following the announcement of the move to Conwys Quays, a new boat show is launching at Pwllheli over the weekend of 10 - 12 June. The Pwllheli show will spotlight local and national marine businesses at the new Plas heli Welsh National Sailing Academy and events centre on the Glan y Don peninsula.

Wales offers fantastic locations for boating. © Crown copyright (2016) Visit Wales As well as bringing an international and Celtic flavour to the peninsula, the weekend will be an opportunity to celebrate local input into the marine trade with businesses from Pwllheli and Llyn serving the marine community across the UK. Visitors will be able to try their hand at various water sports, watch on the water displays, browse the stalls and tour a display of boats on the pontoon. It will not just be marine products and services being on show. The venue itself highlights the local coastline, the easy access from the harbour to the superb sailing waters of Cardigan Bay where the tidal streams are weak, winds are stable and the scenery is superb. Snowdon and the Welsh mountains provide a backdrop for all kinds of water sports from an idyllic cruise exploring the scenic coastline to an adrenaline-fuelled wakeboard session. Stephen Tudor, chairman of Plas heli Cyf, said: “Pwllheli and Llyn have a wealth of local expertise in the marine trade The outstanding beauty of the local coastline provides a beautiful natural backdrop and the venue itself is central for the Welsh coast, the north west of england and Ireland’s east coast.” All Wales Show organiser Carey-evans said: “There is a long lead-in to an event like the All Wales Boat Show and, as we had decided to return to Conwy, it would have been a huge rush to organise an event of the right quality with the right exhibitors. “The show has a proud record of generating millions of pounds for the economy of North Wales and the next boat show in 2017 will be no exception.” www. allwalesboatshow.com

Eighth racE for Martin Image: Paul Wyeth

FrOM PAGe 1 Less than one month after entries opened for the 85th iconic race, which takes place on 2 July, there are already 365 boats logged in. The first entry was Martin Thomas, from King’s Langley in hertfordshire, entering Inseyandra with charter guests and entering for the Bavaria Trophy (IrC) and the

John Franks Trophy (IrC). This year will be Martin’s eighth round the Island race. There is already a strong showing of novice crews chartering boats to enter the race this year, yet again demonstrating that this annual yachting extravaganza is a race or All. The race which regularly attract more than 1,500 boats and

thousands of crew is the fourth biggest participatory sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the North and South Fun runs. Like the running races the island race also raises thousands of pounds for charity. (#raceforall) www.roundtheisland.org.uk

ALL AT SEA MARCH 2016

FIRST ALL-AMPUTEE CREW ALL ABOARD WORLD’S SUCCESSFULLY CROSS ATLANTIC OCEAN By Jane Hyde

THIS year Easter falls in late March and there will be lots of boaters heading off on boating trips. Many of you have enjoyed our look at holidays over the last two issues of All at Sea, and so we will be bringing you boating holiday news, tips and ideas every month. Turn to page 16 for this month’s tempting selection of get-aways. While you are relaxing on your boat remember to take a few photographs for our Photo of the Month! If you do not have a trip planned and are looking for things to do over Easter and spring in general check out our events guide at the All at Sea website. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to shows, festivals and events all around the country. One new event to add to your diary, and perhaps to build a short break around, is the newly announced Pwllheli Boat Show taking place in June. After the news that the All Wales Boat Show was taking a break for a year it seemed Wales would not have a major event this year, and so news of this show at Plas Heli has been welcomed. With such emphasis on our south coast it is all too easy to forget the glorious Welsh coast. There are so many fantastic areas to go boating and enjoy watersports, so let us know your personal recommendations. You might spot me with my family in Wales this June in an old VW campervan called Daisy. Give us a wave if you spot us! Just like some people enjoy looking

around houses, here at All at Sea we are interested in the boats that you own. So now we are giving you the chance to share your pride and joy with all our readers in Me & My Boat. Our first craft belongs to Donna Freeman, and you can read all about it on page 35. Tell us about your boat using the form on our website (www.allatsea.co.uk) or send it to the usual editorial address. We received an enquiry from a reader about the facilities available to boaters with disabilities and it got us thinking about what is out there for less-abled sailors. It turns out there is rather a lot, which is great. The first stop is Sailability, the RYA’s national programme to support and encourage people with disabilities to take up sailing and powerboating. We look at this and other organisations and inspirational people over on page 20, while this month’s RYA feature looks back at February’s RYA Sailability National Conference. We also have a chat with Andy Beadsley, Director of the Wheelyboat Trust, which designs, builds, funds and supplies Wheelyboats. As always we love to hear from you so please get in touch with comments, questions and ideas. Enjoy the issue. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk Find us on facebook

A team of amputees have now become record-breakers. Team Row2Recovery, made up of four veteran amputees - Lee Spencer, Nigel Rogoff, Paddy Gallagher, and skipper Cayle Royce - have set a new world record by becoming the first all-amputee crew to row, unsupported, over 3,000nm from La Gomera to Antigua. They are well known for being referred to as four men with three legs taking on one mighty ocean and were among 26 teams rowing across the Atlantic Ocean unaided.

More people have climbed Everest or been to space than have rowed the Atlantic. The foursome, who have three legs between them, battled crippling sores, storms and serious injury - including having a prosthetic limb shatter during the crossing - to complete the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 46 days. Despite all this they remained in the top ten boats to make it to land first. The crew spent 47 days at sea with a gruelling two-hours on, two-hours off routine to raise money for Blesma, Help

for Heroes, The Endeavour Fund and the Row2Recovery programme and have currently raised over £26,000. The team want to spread the message that there is life beyond injury and help keep raising awareness and funds on behalf of all injured service men and women. British foursome Ocean Reunion were the first team to land in the Caribbean smashing the race record to cross the Atlantic in just 37 days. They were joined three days later by all-female crew Row Like A Girl, who posted a women’s race record.

Fairline on show around the world

FAIRLINE Yachts is starting the year with a strong show presence. It is a positive start to 2016 after Fairline was bought out of administration by Russian owners in January. Bates Wharf Marine Sales have represented Fairline exclusively across the South Coast and have announced that they will be bringing a new Fairline Targa 38, the entry-level model in the Fairline Boats collection, to the London On-Water Show at St Katharine Docks in May. For many this hard top is one of the most eagerly awaited Fairlines to date. Specify the D6-400 Volvo engines and you will also have the fastest Fairline built. Even fully loaded it can easily push into the mid-40 knot range. Fairline Yachts also showcased two of its most popular Squadron yachts – the Squadron 48 and the Squadron 65 – at this year’s Eurasia Boat Show in Istanbul, Turkey in February. Miles Moorhouse of Fairline Yachts said: “The Eurasia Boat Show is an important event for us in our busy global boat show calendar. We are committed to further developing our business in

this region and we look forward to showcasing the best of British here at the Show!” The company also had a presence at the Yachts Miami Beach Show in February and will be at the British Motor Yacht Show in May.

EXTREME SAILING SERIES™ LAUNCHES LANDMARK SEASON Image: Lloyd Images

THE 2016 Extreme Sailing Series™ has been officially launched with a lineup of eight world-class teams from eight nations. As the Series heads into its tenth year, some of the world’s top sailors are preparing to take-off on a new fleet of GC32 catamarans, as the Series welcomes a new generation of foiling boats. Touching down in eight iconic urban city centres, the Portuguese capital Lisbon makes its debut as a new Stadium Sailing racecourse. The fleet will once again do battle on a global stage, taking in three continents over the next 10 months, bringing foiling to urban city stadiums for the first time. After the season-opener in Muscat this month – where the eighth team will be revealed – the fleet will travel to China’s Olympic Sailing City, Qingdao before arriving in Cardiff on 23 June. The Land Rover BAR Academy squad will be led for the first two Acts by the 2015-winning skipper and most successful sailor in the Series history,

Leigh McMillan, who will mentor the Academy sailors alongside Extreme 40 crew Bleddyn Môn, Ben Ainslie and the Land Rover BAR senior team. Event Director Andy Tourell commented on a landmark year: “We have a chance to diversify our format, combining tradition-breaking and award-winning Stadium Racing with the incorporation of match racing, plus the chance to open up the racecourse in some venues, allowing these boats to really stretch their legs – starting with a 20km coastal race to start the season in Muscat, Oman.” The competition on the water promises to be fierce and actionpacked with America’s Cup legends, Olympic heroes and world champions preparing to do battle at close quarters. Among the crews will be veterans of 13 Olympic and 22 America’s Cup campaigns. Between them they also hold 27 World Championship titles, 27 European Championships and 106 National titles. www.extremesailingseries.com

RARE BOAT FOUND

A rare speedboat worth £20,000 was stolen from outside a house in County Durham when thieves attached the trailer to a waiting 4x4 and drove off. the speedboat was discovered nearby a few days later undamaged apart from two flat tyres. Police believe the thieves may have become concerned by the publicity and abandoned it before stripping it down.

SHIP GROUNDED

A 150,000 tonne ship was grounded in the Solent for three days after it lost power whilst leaving Southampton for Hamburg. No damage or pollution was reported following the grounding of APL Vanda, which comes thirteen months after Hoegh Osaka ran aground on Bramble Bank.

CANNON FOUND

An iron cannon unearthed during dredging work on Portsmouth Harbour to prepare for the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers is believed to be an isolated discovery and not an indicator of an undiscovered shipwreck. It will eventually be housed at Portsmouth Museum with other artefacts found during the project.

THERE are big plans to entertain the crowds at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth. It is all about high adrenaline, fast paced action on the water, as the best sailors in the world compete on ‘flying’ catamarans reaching speeds of over 40mph. Off the water there will be even more action, with acrobatic air displays by the Red Bull Matadors set to delight the crowds in Portsmouth on 24 July with more attractions still to be announced. The first ever Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Oman, and the first event of 2016, got underway on 27 February, putting Muscat under a global sporting spotlight. The event was watched by millions of sporting fans around the world, many of them turned on to sailing through the intense action, close competition and dynamic sailors that are a hallmark of racing in the America’s Cup. Salma Al Hashmi, Oman Sail Events and Marketing Director, said: “The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is a major international sporting event and we are absolutely delighted to host the opening stage of 2016 here in Oman.” Full report coming next month in All at Sea. www.lvacwsportsmouth.com

DEE CAFFARI’S BIG PLANS DEE Caffari MBE became the first woman to sail solo around the world the wrong way, non-stop in 2006. Following her circumnavigation, her sixth place finish in the Vendée Globe in 2009 made her the first woman to sail solo and non-stop in both directions around the Globe. As a member of Team SCA in the Volvo Ocean Race in 2014/15, Dee completed her fifth trip around the world with the all-female crew. Now Dee Caffari will realise a lifelong dream and take on the challenging Three Peaks Yacht Race from Barmouth to Fort William, starting on 11 June. Dee will be raising funds for the work of sailing and respite charity Sail 4 Cancer. She is putting together a very competitive team including expert meteorologist and navigator Libby Greenhalgh. The Three Peaks Yacht Race is one of the oldest multisport endurance races in the world. It is a unique event combining sailing, running and a little cycling; with the quirky feature that rowing is allowed in moments of calm. It takes competitors through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. Not only are teams required to have excellent sailing and navigational abilities, but they will run Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, the highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland, in only a few days. Dee Caffari is also now an Ambassador to Youth Charity UKSA. Dee, a former P.E teacher, started her training at UKSA’s centre in Cowes with a Watersports Instructor Training course, which led onto the Pro Crew & Skipper Training course which is now equivalent to the Professional Yachtmaster qualification. Dee said: “It is a real pleasure to have been appointed an ambassador for UKSA. UKSA uses sailing and watersports as a catalyst to help young people develop themselves and this is something I strongly believe in.

YACHT WASHED AWAY

Beale Park boat and outdoor show

A Princess 45 was washed off the deck of a transporter ship whilst en route to Oslo. The boat washed up on the Norwegian coast where it was wrecked by the rocks and the remains are thought to have sunk. It is thought a rogue wave may have caused the incident.

FLETCHER MOVING

Speedboat manufacturer Fletcher Boats is relocating to coastal premises and will launch a new 29ft model. The company also plans to increase production by the end of 2017 to 100 boats.

SUPER TUG

A super tug is being built to help the Navy’s biggest warships into and out of Portsmouth. Arriving in the city early next year – ahead of the maiden entry by carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth – this is the small, but powerful craft that will be vital to guiding the 65,000-tonne leviathan in and out of harbour and on and off the wall at the new Princess Royal jetty.

SHIPWRECK CAPITAL

Underwater archaeologists have discovered 22 shipwrecks around a small Greek archipelago, revealing what may be the ancient shipwreck capital of the world. The finds have been hailed as one of the top archaeological finds of 2015.

GAC Pindar skipper Ian Williams has entered the record books as the first to win sailing’s World Match Racing Tour title six times. Williams previously won the title in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2015. He beats his own record set last year when he won the title for the fifth time. The victory will go down as Williams’s best yet, after being drawn into a thrilling three-way battle with Björn Hansen (Nautiska) and Taylor Canfield (US One). Williams went into the final event of the tour, the Monsoon Cup, knowing that the tour title would be his if he finished ahead of either of his two

challengers, due to the two point lead accumulated over the season. Williams and the GAC Pindar crew secured the title and the accompanying $80,000 prize money with a convincing 3-0 victory over Canfield in the final race. Williams said: “We are all absolutely thrilled with the result – a great job by GAC Pindar all year which has culminated in this final victory. I can not reiterate enough how great the team have been – I certainly had to make them work for it after the poor start, but we pulled it together when it mattered.”

IN the stunning setting of Beale Park, the quirky and very British Beale Park Boat & Outdoor Show, 3 – 5 June, makes for a fabulous day out. The show’s ‘green area’ nestles comfortably between a lake and the river Thames and offers plenty for families to explore and interact with including, for the first time, free boat rides across the lake. At the show visitors can see the widest range of boats in the UK, from steam and electric to fibreglass and sea boats, and everything else in between. This year’s main theme is linked to the Wooden Boatbuilders’ Trade Association, so provides the opportunity to meet the best wooden boatbuilders in the country, understand their craft and try out their boats. With this in mind, the annual Amateur Boat Building Awards competition 2016 is for wooden boats; any kind of boat is welcome to enter as long as it is built in wood, plywood or both. The family area will integrate with the show’s core boat values and will be educational and fun: discover how to tie knots, make a sail, make a model boat and learn about navigation and maritime history. Go along for the day or make a weekend of it. Moor up your own boat (from just £32 for four nights) or camp in the meadow next to the showground from just £32 for up to four nights. The glamping pod also proved a big hit last year. bealeparkboatandoutdoorshow.co.uk

NEWS IN BRIEF HASLAR’S INVESTMENT

Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas are investing over £1.5 million in Portsmouth Harbour’s Haslar Marina. Priorities include repairing the wavescreen, dredging, a new electrical installation using Rolec’s Quantum pedestals and major improvements to the washroom facilities. The first phase of the electrical installation sees the Rolec Quantum pedestal being fitted to the pontoons from April. Haslar will be the first marina in the UK to showcase the slim anodised aluminium bollards.

Taking on the challenge PREMIER MOTORBOAT AND A team of ex-servicemen and women affected by military operations are set to make a bid to sail around the British Isles. The veterans, led by former RAF squadron leader Shaun Pascoe, will take on the Turn to Starboard Round Britain Challenge in June. The Round Britain Challenge 2016 will see a crew of 16 veterans – many with little or no sailing experience – sail aboard a 92ft replica Tall Ship for the complete voyage or smaller sections of the route. They will be joined by two additional yachts also crewed by veterans, to meet an unexpectedly high number of applicants.

The 2000-mile expedition has been organised by Turn to Starboard, a sailing charity based at Falmouth in Cornwall who help veterans with physical or psychological injuries by taking them sailing. The eight-week journey is planned as a way to help participants gain new skills while highlighting the challenges veterans face. The crew are expected to experience physical exertion and sleep deprivation, while overcoming the psychological challenges of living and working in a turbulent natural environment. www.turntostarboard.co.uk

PREMIER Marinas will be hosting The Premier Motorboat and RIB Show at Gosport Marina from 12 - 13 March. Set against the backdrop of Gosport Marinas’ dry stack facility, this free to enter show will feature over 30 different powerboats, motorboats, RIBs and sports boats both in the water and ashore. There will also be a life raft demonstration, PWCs and a range of paddle boards. Besides boats and watercraft for sale, there will be advice on motorboat

training and insuring your craft, a range of electronics from Landau UK, chandlery from You Boat and information on Premier’s dry stack facilities at Swanwick Marina, Gosport Marina and Falmouth Marina in Cornwall. Premier will be inviting visitors to take part in a free prize draw to win a year’s dry stack berthing for a boat up to 8m. Visitors to the event will also be able to see live demonstrations showing how Premier’s specialist marine forklift lifts boats from the dry stack and launches them into the water. Graham Bristowe, Portsmouth Harbour General Manager said, “It will a valuable show for those who are keen boating enthusiasts who want to know about the benefits of dry stack and for serious buyers who want to view a variety of boat brands.”

HAT-TRICK OF MEDALS WORLD number one windsurfer Bryony Shaw sealed a hat-trick of Sailing World Cup Miami titles, with Paralympic champion Helena Lucas also claiming victory at the season-opening regatta. TEENAGE RESCUERS

Two Australian teenagers, Ed Fuggle and Ben Brunton, saved the life of a jet skier who had been hit by a wave and knocked off his jet ski. Suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion, the jetskier had been stranded offshore for over an hour. One of the teenagers swam to the man while the other young sailor capsized his boat to get the attention of the Rye Yacht Club safety boat. Michael Vandertop, Commodore of Rye Yacht Club, said: “It was a combination of good decision making made by the boys and effective coordination of the Rye Yacht Club rescue team that this became a success story.”

Here is one we launched earlier

IN a few months’ time the fourth Blue Peter 1 lifeboat will come to the end of its service life and after 49 years Littlehampton RNLI will no longer have a Blue Peter lifeboat. In 1966 an appeal was launched by the BBC tV children’s programme Blue Peter to fund an inshore lifeboat for Littlehampton RNLI. the appeal was so successful that the programme funded four lifeboats and Littlehampton became custodians of Blue Peter 1. Subsequent appeals increased the number of Blue Peter lifeboats in RNLI service to seven. the original Blue Peter 1 was a D Class inshore lifeboat, succeeded a few years later by the higher performance Atlantic 21. Nick White, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Littlehampton RNLI, talks of mixed emotions: “It is with a tinge of sadness that we say goodbye to Blue Peter 1. From my generation onwards as children we all watched Blue Peter. In 2017 we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reestablishment of our lifeboat station, 49 years of those as custodian of Blue Peter 1. “the current boat will be replaced by the latest Atlantic 85 lifeboat, funded by the legacy of a private donor. the station is extremely proud of its association with Blue Peter, as are many visitors to the lifeboat station for whom Blue Peter was a part of their childhood.”

Celebrating historic ships

FROM dramatic sea battles and rescue missions, to transporting essential supplies and equipment, ships played a vital role during the First World War. Guests, including owners of surviving First World War vessels, gathered at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for a special National Historic Ships UK event to celebrate the contributions that surviving vessels on the National Register of Historic Vessels held by National Historic Ships UK made to the British First World War effort. Martyn Heighton, Director of NHS-UK, said: “It was both a pleasure and great honour to host so many owners and those connected with these vessels. “It is because of their dedication and passion that we are able to commemorate the essential maritime stories of more than a century ago through vessels that were there during the war and are still with us today. “We would love to hear from anyone with a vessel on our Register or one that has not yet been registered, which was the focus of a First World War story or event.”

DAISY Coleman was discharged from the Royal Artillery in 2013 after being diagnosed with suspected Ankylosing Spondylitis. On this diagnosis she gave up her lifelong passion of riding, but Daisy was introduced to watersports and powerboating by Mission Motorsport. Racing with John Wilson in ‘Pertemps’, the former military woman enjoyed a runners-up position in the 2015 Championship. Since leaving the Royal

Artillery her disability has diminished and through rehab, exercise and support she has recovered well. Daisy will be racing with her brother in 2016. With a title sponsor in place and assistance from the Royal Artillery Association, the siblings are not only looking to race a P1 Panther on home water this year but to fulfil a dream of racing on the US circuit in a similar hull. www.facebook.com/ p1superstockboat03

Powerboat racing awards ceremony tHREE British rookie solo ocean racing sailors are preparing for their biggest test yet, a 350nm, non-stop, single-handed race that takes place along the French Brittany coast. the Solo Concarneau tropheé Guy Cotten is the first of three build-up races to the 2016 Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro race in June, the unofficial world championship of solo ocean racing. Sailed in identical 33ft Beneteau Figaro monohulls, the race – featuring a fleet of up 25 British and French skippers – starts from the picturesque fishing town of Concarneau on 17 March. Write to editor@allatsea.co.uk

For aspiring British single-handers, Hugh Brayshaw, Mary Rook and Will Harris, the Solo Concarneau is going to be the first big challenge as they enter the racing section of the British Artemis Offshore Academy programme. the rookies will be joined on the start line by Academy alumni sailor Alan Roberts, who clinched the highest ever finish for a British sailor in the modern Figaro after coming ninth last year. Nick Cherry returns to start his fifth Figaro season, racing Redshift in his first competitive outing since his fifth place in the Generali Solo race at the end of 2015.

It was a night of glitz, glamour and awards as racers from offshore, circuit and jet bike were joined by friends, family, sponsors and supporters to celebrate the successes of the 2015 season at the annual RYA Powerboat Racing Awards. 70 plus awards were presented throughout the evening, from newcomer, P1 AquaX Ski Amateur Champion, Harry Robinson, to t850 Champion Bill Owen who has been racing for some 45 years. they also celebrated winners of two new industry awards, Pertemps Network and Scarborough Borough Council. Jeni Jelf, RYA Powerboat Racing Manager said: “It is the perfect opportunity to get everyone together from across all the disciplines to celebrate the sports successes. We are extremely proud of all the RYA National Champions and it is important that we recognise their achievements and what better way than a fantastic awards ceremony.”

CAPTAIN OF THE CARPATHIA THE SEAFARING LIFE OF TITANIC HERO SIR ARTHUR HENRY ROSTRON by Eric L. Clements £20 Hardback /£17.99 eBook

Rostron’s seafaring life from his early days rounding Cape Horn in sail to his retirement as commodore of the Cunard Line. This first truly comprehensive biography uses Rostron’s life to discuss the wider history in which he was involved, the evolution of the transatlantic passenger trade and some of the celebrated ships in which he served and commanded.

AND THE FIRST YACHT RACE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

by Sam Jefferson £16.99 Hardback /£14.99 eBook

After a drunken evening in New York’s opulent Union Club, three of the richest men in 19th-century America made a bet that would change the course of yachting history, symbolise the beginning of America’s ‘gilded age’, signal the thawing of relations between the US and the UK and leave six sailors dead. Each of the men owned a yacht, and each had staked $30,000 ($5m in today’s money) on becoming the first across the Atlantic. If that was mad, then the dead-of-winter start date of 11 December was borderline crazy. Fortunately, borderline crazy was everyday behaviour for one of the men – the infamous James Gordon Bennett Jr.

Just getting into his stride as a playboy and already known for his outrageous antics which lead directly to the eponymous phrase Gordon Bennett! he was the only owner to sail aboard his yacht during the race. Gordon Bennett is a book laced with scandal and adventure, following the extraordinary race through the story of Bennett’s own yacht Henrietta. Including a jailbird and occasional vaudeville actor as captain, Winston Churchill’s future grandfather as race invigilator and a journalist smuggled aboard in a crate of champagne, the crew was certainly varied, and the race itself had all the drama you would expect of an ill-advised record attempt undertaken by a group of eccentrics desperate to win at any cost.

Responding to Titanic’s distress calls in the early hours of 15 April 1912, Captain Arthur Rostron raced the Cunard liner Carpathia to the scene, rescued 706 survivors of the world’s most famous shipwreck and then carried them to safety at New York. Following the Titanic rescue, Rostron served throughout the First World War, captaining the Cunard liner Mauretania first as a hospital ship and then as a troop ship. As her longest-serving master he commanded that legendary vessel in transatlantic passenger service through most of the 1920s. Rostron retired in 1931 as the most esteemed master mariner of his era, celebrated for the Titanic rescue, decorated for his war service and knighted for his contributions to British seafaring. REVOLVER LAUNCH

The new Revolver 43CC, a high performance center console with outboard engine, is scheduled for launch this year. The Revolver 43CC picks up on design elements introduced in previous models and inspired by the super sports car world, with the rear spoiler reminiscent of cars from the 1960s. The boat will be nearly 13-metres long and equipped with Seven Marine outboard engines for powerboat performance at a maximum speed of more than 50 knots. Price (standard): €490,000 www.revolverboats.com

NEW 305 dROPHEAd dAY CRUISER FROM NIMbUS NIMBUS launch their 305 Drophead this month. The 305 is a day cruiser suitable for comfortable weekend and day trips. It is built on the same platform as the award-winning 305 Coupé. The boat is built on the new Smart Speed concept; a hull designed for a comfortable ride at speeds from 0 to 22 knots. The hull has no distinct planing threshold and runs with good fuel economy at all speeds. Speed can be adapted to sea conditions, and this means better safety and comfort. The powered canvas hood cover folds down into an integrated

cassette in the window frame at the touch of a button. When in place, the canvas roof shelters the entire cockpit: the helm, the wet bar and the dining area. The four-seat dining table also converts into a spare double berth. Joacim Gustavsson, head designer at Nimbus said: “The name ‘Drophead’ is taken from the large, classical British car manufacturers’ convertibles, often called ‘Drophead coupés’. “Because 305 Drophead has a powered roof we wanted a name that sounded different and associated with the simplicity of raising and lowering the tops of today’s modern convertible cars.”

The boat has two comfortable cabins; the owners’ cabin and a side cabin, sharing the head and shower. The cockpit has a fully equipped, glass-fibre wet bar with 6-litre

fridge, sink and space for a microwave oven, electric grill, electric or gas cooker. Length: 9.85m Number of berths: 6 http://nimbus.se

UIM XCAT WORLd POWERbOAT SERIES

The XCAT World Series truly is a spectacle of speed, with teams of two taking each other on in two-engined carbon-fibre boats that tear around the course at speeds close to 200km per hour.

The 2016 season will kick off in the Gulf of Oman in the UAe city of Fujairah from 7 - 8 April before heading cross-country to Dubai for Round 2 the following weekend, from 15 - 16 April. The festival of speed then heads to Switzerland for Round 3 in Lugano from 4 - 5 June before heading to Asia in September and October. Details of the Asian venues will be announced at a later date but the races are scheduled for 24 - 25 September and 8 - 9 October. The UAe capital, Abu Dhabi, will then welcome back the competing teams as they tackle the penultimate round of the Series from 17-18 November with the grand finale scheduled for Dubai from 2-3 December. xcatracing.com

NEW ELECTRIC MOTOR OFFERINgS START 2016 WITH A VERY qUIET bANg TORqeeDO, a world leader in electric boating, launched several new, environmentally friendly, electric drive systems last month at the Düsseldorf Boat “Boot” Show. There is a new range of pod motors, which are installed in a fixed position and are completely sealed and maintenance free, therefore they can be attached under the boat hull so there is no noise or fumes. The pod drives can have an optional folding propeller. Fitted below the water, the drives save space and are both lightweight and

powerful. Their efficiency is designed to ensure plenty of range and Torqeedo’s TorqTrac interface supplies the boat owner with essential motor data in real time. The Cruise range of electric engines has been greatly expanded, with new models which deliver the power equivalent of 5, 8 or 20hp. The 4.0 FP is said to propel a sailboat of up to four tons at over six knots. There is minimal motor noise, even at full load, with direct cooling in the water. All the engines have an on board computer, which can interface with TorqTrac, the smartphone app for Torqeedo drives. Also new is the 10.0 R, which enters the market as the most powerful Torqeedo electric drive system using low-voltage

technology. With power equivalent to a 20hp combustion engine, the emissionfree drive with 12 kW peak power and 10 kW continuous power is billed as an alternative for commercial users of tenders, ferry boats, barges and excursion boats. Also improved is the 40hp/80hp Deep Blue engine, which has a new hybrid system. The hybrid is aimed at sailboats between 40 and 80 feet and combines the electric drives with a fully integrated, modular and scalable, energy management system. Clean energy is generated by wind and solar, and, while under sail, by the rotating propellers. Diesel generators are used as a backup to supply additional energy when needed. energy from the system can also be used

to power other electrical devices on board such as the air conditioning and the water maker. Then comes the Torqeedo Deep Blue SD - the world’s first electric highperformance saildrive in serial production. Its 40hp equivalent power makes it an option for displacement vessels or large yachts. Torqeedo says the SD can propel displacement vessels weighing up to 50 tons as well as large yachts at speeds of up to 10 knots with emissionfree motoring and virtually no noise or vibration. Weighing less than 70 kg and designed without a shaft drive, the SD is apparently easy to install and maintain. For the handheld outboard engine market, the popular Travel 1003 electric model for 2016 has the new high-

performance 915Wh lithium travel battery. This powerful but compact battery is said to give 73 per cent more power than previously available on the 4hp outboards. There was also new for 2015 on all Travel 1003 models, an integrated GPS and a USB connector, which can be used to power other electric devices such as mobile phones. Fitted on all the electric engines is the TorqTrac system, which uses Bluetooth to transmit information from the motor mounted on your boat to your smartphone, where it is merged with map information from Google Maps. This enables you to see in real time just how far you have travelled and how far you still have to go. You can also navigate by entering waypoints and view your expected time of arrival at your destination. For more information go to www.torqeedo.com www.penninemarine.com 01756 792335

Enjoy beautiful evenings with early sunsets and the sun low in the sky – perfectly picturesque with fantastic backdrops at night for cruising or dropping anchor. it is still technically ‘low season’ in the travel world, which means you can book a bargain and get the best prices for each location, whilst still enjoying a warm sailing break. Prices are very competitive – with some as low as £900 for a week with a yacht for six, with an extra option in the saloon – £150 per person! www.PlainSailing.com

SPECIAL FEATURE VOLUNTEER HARBOUR PATROL

RIGHT: The Volunteer Harbour Patrol is looking to recruit new members

Lottery to the rescue Stephen Hopper, the Queen’s Harbour Master at Portsmouth, based in the Semaphore Tower, explains that it is only as a result of some tremendous grant support from the Lottery Fund that the Volunteer Harbour Patrol will be back on the water this summer to once again help and advise the many users of this very busy harbour. The Patrol was established in 2004 and has gone from strength to strength due mainly to the very generous support of its sponsors. It now has about 40 volunteers who give up their time at evenings and weekends throughout the season, which runs from about Easter to November, to patrol in a dory and

catamaran to assist the leisure users of the Port. All are experienced in boat handling, first aid and radio procedures. They also provide invaluable help during largescale events such as the International Festival of the Sea, Trafalgar 200 and the America’s Cup World Series.

Around 40 volunteers give up their time at evenings and weekends throughout the season

THE Volunteer Harbour Patrol is a Charitable Company that provides advice and assistance to the many thousands of leisure users in Portsmouth Harbour and the surrounding waters of the Solent. It is a unique cooperative venture between the military, commercial and leisure users of the Port, and since its introduction the number of incidents have dropped dramatically in what is probably one of the busiest harbours in the country.

The catamaran needed new engines and a refurbishment

LOTTERY FUNDING The Patrol is a registered Charity and is well supported by many of the maritime businesses in the Port who provide either services or cash. Last year, and after over ten years of use, the twin engines of the main patrol catamaran needed replacing. This, together with a general refurbishment, is being carried out by Hendy’s at Swanwick Marina. However it was only made possible by a £10,000 cash grant from the Lottery Fund. Without this, the Patrol might well have closed down. With over 8,5000 naval and commercial movements, along with many thousands more recreational users, previous years have been busy with assistance given to casualties in or near the harbour entrance, with an average of about 60 a season. 2016 promises to be no different.

VOLUNTEERS WELCOMED Always keen to help, the volunteers are on the water during summer weekends, so if you are visiting and unsure about local rules and requirements (and there are plenty) please ask them; you will be sure of a warm welcome. The Patrol is anxious to recruit a few more members this spring. Ideally, candidates should have RYA Level II powerboat as a minimum, together with a good measure of experience on the water, either under sail or power, but the Patrol is always prepared to consider applications from anyone who would like to contribute to this very worthwhile enterprise. More information about the Patrol can be obtained from the Charity Secretary Chris McDonald at qhm.vhp@btinternet.com

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH ANDY BEADSLEY, DIRECTOR OF THE WHEELYBOAT TRUST

V20 launch, Castle Semple Centre, May 2015

left him a wheelchair user and his friend and fishing companion, Alan Faulkner, wondered how they would be able to carry on fishing together, given the access difficulties Bill now faced. Alan’s solution was an accessible boat. The charity was incorporated in December 1984 and was originally called The Handicapped Anglers Trust.

HOW DO YOU THINK SAILING FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES CAN BE IMPROVED FURTHER?

WHAT DOES THE TRUST DO? Andy Beadsley at the V20’s helm

WHAT IS A WHEELYBOAT?

Wheelyboats are wheelchair accessible open, powered day-boats with drive from wheelchair helms. We currently supply four models – two angling boats and two multi-purpose craft. Wheelyboats are used are used on canals, rivers, lakes, lochs, reservoirs, estuaries and inshore waters for activities including pleasure boating, nature watching, angling, powerboating and powerboat training.

HOW DID THE WHEELYBOAT TRUST COME ABOUT?

We came about as a direct result of one of our founding Trustees, Bill Buchanan, sustaining a spinal injury. His accident

We design, build, fund and supply Wheelyboats, 171 so far. Instead of operating Wheelyboats ourselves we work in partnership with other organisations and help them acquire their own Wheelyboat to operate for the benefit of their members, beneficiaries and the general public. Wheelyboat operators include Sailability groups, sailing schools, activity centres and fisheries. We will support individual projects by raising funds to help meet the cost of a Wheelyboat.

WHEN DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE TRUST?

I was appointed Director in 2002 but I have been a Wheelyboat user since they first started appearing on fishing lakes in the mid-1980s.

groups that want to cater for larger groups of people and offer more adventurous activities including powerboat training and tuition. Come and see us and our V20 at the RYA Dinghy Show, Seawork and Southampton Boat Show, all courtesy of our sponsors, Suzuki GB.

WHAT KIND OF SAILING DO YOU ENJOY?

I am a keen angler and as a wheelchair user myself, Wheelyboats have been fundamental to my enjoyment and participation in the sport. I enjoy demonstrating Wheelyboats at shows and for potential new projects. Our new Wheelyboat model, the Coulam Wheelyboat V20, is a proper inshore powerboat and it is enormous fun taking her out. Top speed so far is 39mph! I PB2 qualified a couple of years ago.

CAN WHEELYBOATS BE BOUGHT OR HIRED? Wheelyboats are mostly self-operated hire craft and there is a list of all the

UK and Irish venues on our website. Some, like the Wheelyboat operating in Chichester Harbour, have volunteer helmsmen to take people out. We also sell Wheelyboats to individuals and the first private order for a V20 has just been received.

WHAT IS COMING UP IN 2016 FOR THE WHEELYBOAT TRUST?

We have a very busy year ahead. The V20 incorporates high-speed performance, roll-on, roll-off access, drive-fromwheelchair helm and safe and stable operation in a craft with outstanding lines and looks. It is unique in its class and is generating a lot of interest from activity centres and disabled sailing

For a long time we only offered one model of Wheelyboat – a one-size-fits-all solution – but since we designed different models for different activities we have supplied more Wheelyboats, creating more Wheelyboat venues giving more disabled people the opportunity to get afloat. As the aspirations of disabled people are as diverse as the rest of the population’s, this should be reflected in the opportunities available to us to get on the water and have fun.

HOW CAN READERS MAKE A DONATION TO THE TRUST?

Donations towards our running costs or current Wheelyboat projects (details in our latest newsletter available to download on our website) can be made by cheque to the address below or online at www.wheelyboats.org. Whatever you can afford we will put to very good use. n The Wheelyboat Trust North Lodge, Burton Park, Petworth, West Sussex GU28 0JT

SPECIAL FEATURE ACCESSIBLE BOATING FOR ALL

Boating for all

Sailing is one of the few sports in which the ablebodied and disabled can participate on equal terms, and here we look at some inspirational sailors and how boating has become accessible to all. BOATING, whether ownership, day trips, holidays or competition, has become far more accessible thanks in part to the large number of organisations and charities offering opportunities to less-abled sailors. Now thousands are joining the world of boating, in all its forms, every year.

Helena Lucas Helena Lucas made history claiming 2.4mR Paralympic gold at London 2012, becoming the first ever female winner of the male dominated Paralympic class and Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing gold medallist. Having sailed 470s since 1997

Geoff Holt MBE geoffholt.com Geoff was paralysed in a swimming accident in 1984 and uses a wheelchair. In 1995 he became the inaugural Chairman of RYA Sailability, a role he held for six years. In 2007 he became the first disabled person to sail single-handed around Great Britain. In 2009 he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean unassisted. He was awarded an MBE for ‘Services to Disabled Sailing’ in 2010 and named as the YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year shortly after. He is an ambassador for several charities for people with disabilities.

Boston then returned across the Atlantic to England. In October Keith White undertook his latest sailing challenge, sailing singlehanded and non-stop around the World via the three capes. Unfortunately, due to a great deal of storm damage, in December Keith had to postpone this attempt. Lucy Hodges MBE Lucy Hodges was awarded the MBE for services to Blind Sailing in 2014. She won gold, two silvers and two bronze medals at World and International Blind Sailing Championships.

ON THE WATER

There are many organisations and charities helping people with disabilities to get afloat in all types of boats.

SAilAbiliTy www.rya.org.uk Sailability is the RYA’s national programme to support and encourage people with disabilities to take up sailing and powerboating. With over 200 recognised RYA Sailability sites in the UK, there are many opportunities for disabled sailors to get out on the water, whether alone or in a double-handed boat. Through Sailability thousands of young people and adults with disabilities are introduced to sailing each year, with many going on to sail on a regular basis at RYA-recognised clubs and centres up and down the country. IN THE SPOTLIGHT Wetwheels THIS spring will see the arrival of Wetwheels Humble, the third specially adapted power catamaran in the rapidly growing Wetwheels fleet. She will join Wetwheels Silent and Wetwheels Jersey enriching the lives of disabled people of all ages by providing fun and exhilarating trips at sea. A common sight on our local waters, last year Wetwheels Silent took in excess of 1,500 people for trips, of which more than 1,300 of those had never been on the water before. Geoff Holt MBE, founder and CEO of Wetwheels, explains: “I realized some years back that there was a large percentage of disabled people who were being denied access to the sea because there were no suitable boats for them. At the time I could not have foreseen just how big that demand was. “Working with IOW based Cheetah Marine and Suzuki Marine, we came up with the concept of a fully accessible boat that would accommodate every disability, not only as passengers, but for everyone who came aboard to have the opportunity to drive the boat too. The result was Wetwheels.” With its fast planning hulls accommodating up to 10 passengers, three of whom can be wheelchair users, and a ramped helming position, it is a concept that has captured the imagination of disabled people and supporters alike. Within a year of Wetwheels Silent launching, Wetwheels Jersey was launched. Less than two years later Wetwheels Humble will be in service catering for disabled people in the eastern Silent and new Wetwheels groups in the South East, North East and Cornwall are actively fundraising for boats, all of which could be in service within three years. “I am obviously delighted by the rapid growth of Wetwheels but not surprised,” said Geoff. “Our marine community get so hung up on sailing as being the only way to experience being afloat that we forget that sailing is not

appropriate or desirable for many, yet these people still have the same desires and rights to get afloat and experience our marine environment as anyone else. “There is so much discussion as to whether sailing or powerboating is better that we forget it is actually being on the water that is the most important thing. “Offering a power boating alternative that has easy access, no need to leave a wheelchair, can accommodate the most severely disabled people alongside their friends and family and gives them an impactful and memorable sensory experience that can work around their time constraints for personal care has proved to be a big hit. “There are more than 200 sailing charities in the UK, and we are the only powerboating alternative offering offshore activities and we are struggling to keep up with the demand.” The Wetwheels Foundation is the national charity, which oversees development. Chairman Andy Fell said: “We are really pleased with the numbers of people we are supporting and proud of the work being done by our groups but our challenge is to raise the money to underpin our development plans. “Each new boat costs about £150,000 and then we need to raise operating costs for each operator so we are always looking to build relationships with sponsors and donors.” Wetwheels Humble will be based at the new Prince Philip Yacht Haven on the River Humble Image: Motorboat Owner

RYA FOCUS

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

BY EMMA SLATER

SAILABILITY On Saturday 20 February, the RYA Sailability National Conference, Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony was held at Wyboston Lakes Executive Centre.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The conference offered volunteers the chance to meet with experts

WITH over 200 RYA Sailability sites across the UK helping more than 17,000 people with disabilities sailing regularly, the annual conference offered volunteers the chance to meet with experts and attend a range of workshops, clinics and talks. Ahead of the sailing season, around 100 people attended the event and were able to organise one-one-one clinics with RYA staff on a range of subjects including safeguarding, racing progression, affiliation and grant funding and charity queries. Throughout the day, attendees were also able to hear case studies from three successful Sailability sites: Wealden Sailability, who won the 2015 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, Bisham Abbey Sailing School and Aztec Adventure at Upton Warren. Despite each having differing operational approaches and strategic aims, they have all run successful, regular RYA Sailability sessions and were able to share their insights with other sites. These sessions were an excellent opportunity to share good practice and discuss different approaches to running sessions for sailors with disabilities.

WORKSHOPS

With workshops on social media, networking and coping with demand delivered by RYA Sailability staff, attendees were able to develop skills and consider ways in which their sites could improve self-promotion and develop effective systems for dealing with increasing participation numbers. In the social media workshop, Sailability groups were encouraged to connect with their clients through Facebook, Twitter and other popular social media sites. In order to encourage sites to use their social media accounts and engage with each other, a Sailability Photograph of the Month Conference Special competition was organised, with the winner announced at the end of the conference. Debbie Blachford, RYA Sailability Manager, said: “It was fantastic to see so many RYA Sailability sites represented. The workshops during the day offered us a chance to really engage with all of sailing providers and help them assess and improve the activities they offer.” One attendee said: “Visiting the conference was an incredibly useful

This year’s Multi-Class Regatta takes place at Rutland Sailing Club in August

experience. We found it to be a great opportunity to share ideas and to learn from the challenges and success of other sites. From the varied and interesting range of workshops to the opportunities for one-to-one meetings, the conference has helped our site fully prepare for the new sailing season. “We really appreciated the opportunity to engage not only with other Sailability groups, but also with RYA staff, who were able to answer our questions and provide guidance on a whole host of issues.”

AWARD WINNER

The RYA Sailability Volunteer and Youth Volunteer Awards recognise the priceless

voluntary contribution given by people who make a real impact on our sport. The Awards Ceremony offered an opportunity to thank volunteers for all their hard work and commitment in helping others to sail regularly. Among those who received Sailability Volunteer Awards were Ian Nicholson from CVSS – Sailing for people with disabilities, Paul Bunting from Belfast Lough Sailability and Mylor Sailability’s Tracey Boyne, in recognition of their work supporting RYA Sailability and its aims over a number of years. Debbie Blachford said: “The Awards Dinner in the evening also offered us a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate volunteers at Sailability sites across the country. Without these people dedicating their time and efforts to helping others sail, many RYA Sailability sites would not exist. “The conference was a great opportunity to reflect on the progress made in 2015 and also to look ahead to the coming year, with some really exciting events coming up. We are looking forward to what will be an incredibly exciting 12 months for RYA Sailability and disabled sport as a whole.”

INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER

Following the dinner and awards ceremony, the attendees were able to hear from afterdinner speaker Norman Croucher. Norman is an acclaimed mountain climber who set out to climb one of the world’s 14 highest mountains and completed the 26,250 foot ascent, despite having two below-the-knee artificial legs. Norman was able to share stories and experiences drawn from nearly 50 years of mountaineering expeditions around the globe, alongside his extensive work with disabled groups.

RYA Sailability will be present at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show, to be held at Alexandra Palace, London, from 5 - 6 March. Meet the RYA Sailability team for friendly information and advice on sailing opportunities for people with a disability. Visit Stand G28 in the Panorama Hall to find out how and where to start sailing, or for the latest guidance for sailors, sailing groups and clubs. Get your show tickets from www.dinghyshow.org.uk. From 6 – 7 August Rutland Sailing Club will be hosting the Multi-Class Regatta. With two days of action-packed racing scheduled, sailors will also be able to benefit from an extra day’s optional training on 5 August. Led by a qualified racing coach, this is the perfect opportunity to hone your racing skills and be fully prepared for the hotly-contested regatta. Of the regatta, Debbie said: “This will be an excellent chance for racers to hone their skills and then put them to the test in a competitive but enjoyable environment. Our previous MultiClass Regattas have been really popular, and we hope this will prove just as successful.” Following the success of the Conference, 2016 looks set to be a busy year for RYA Sailability sites across the country, with the 2016 Paralympics due to be held in Rio in September.

EXPERTS’ FORUM

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

UNDERSTANDING GUARANTEES AND WARRANTIES

New boats are sold with a manufacturer’s guarantee but check the details carefully. Image: Princess Yachts

GUARANTEED SUCCESS Buying a boat is exciting - and an important investment that you will want to protect. Paul Finney from Boats and Yachts Warranty talks us through different types of boat sales, plus seller obligations with regards to guarantees and warranty. IT is important to remember that a guarantee or warranty acts as an addition to a buyer’s statutory rights. A guarantee is a conditional promise by a manufacturer or dealer to repair, replace or refund free of charge, goods that do not meet the specifications set out in the purchase particulars. They are normally for a set period of time for a failure

attributable to manufacturing defects. An insurance backed guarantee provides protection where the supplier/manufacturer ceases to trade. In such circumstances, the insurance company provides protection for the remainder of the guarantee period. Warranties/extended warranties provide cover for mechanical failure of specified components, usually after the initial guarantee has run out. However, they can run at the same time as a guarantee where they offer additional cover. Good warranties include clearly defined terms explaining what is and what is not covered, claim limits, how to make a claim and how your repair will be completed.

When buying privately remember the terms ‘buyer beware’ and ‘sold as seen’

NEW BOAT SALES New boats are sold with a manufacturer’s guarantee (warranty). However, watch out for restrictions and service requirements they impose. Some manufacturers now provide a limited extension to the initial guarantee period e.g. 3+2 years. DEALER STOCK USED BOAT SALES Such boats are sold and owned by the dealer. They are legally required to include a warranty. The buyer also benefits from protection under the new Consumer Goods Act. However, the length and terms of such warranties vary. Beware! Some are not insurance backed. So, it is vital to check that your dealer warranty meets your requirements AND is insurance backed, so if they cease to trade your warranty will still be honoured. Many dealer warranties are ‘Return to Base’ meaning it has to be returned to the purchase location for repair - difficult if you bought in Scotland and keep your craft in Spain. BROKERAGE & PRIVATE USED BOAT SALES The broker sells the craft on the owner’s behalf and charges a commission. Such purchases are classed as a private sale between the owner (vendor) and the buyer.

There is no warranty given or implied, so it is important prospective buyers satisfy themselves as to the boat’s condition. Just like brokerage sales, private sales do not include a warranty - the terms ‘buyer beware’ and ‘sold as seen’ come to mind! EXTENDED WARRANTY PLANS If you would rather feel sure that your craft is properly protected then an extended warranty plan could be for you. These plans cover mechanical breakdown. In most cases they can be bought at the time of boat purchase, either directly or through a dealer - or at any point after. If your craft suffers mechanical breakdown of a covered component within the extended warranty period, you simply

contact your warranty provider. Make sure you look out for clearly defined terms and claims procedures. Once the repair has been assessed and approved, a good warranty provider will settle the bill directly with the repairer . While standard extended warranty plans cover engines and various mechanical components, some providers, like Boats and Yachts Warranty, offer the option to add cover for tender/dinghy motors, generators and auxiliary outboards. So, make sure your warranty covers the locations you sail in, has clear terms, offers a straightforward claims process and, most important of all, is insurance backed! www.boatsandyachtswarranty.com Next month: buying a boat with Boatshed’s Neil Chapman

DO YOU KNOW YOUR POINTS OF SAIL When you are out sailing there are different ‘points of sail’, which refer to your boat’s course in relation to the wind. Each point has a different name and there is even ‘no go zone’. See if you can match the point of sail with the right description.

This Month 32 Years Ago… 17 March 1984 The 130th Boat Race was postponed less than an hour before it was due to start after the Cambridge vessel was in collision with a barge, used by umpires in the middle of the river, and sank. The crew had been holding a practice run under Putney Bridge when the accident happened. The next day the Boat Race went ahead with Oxford crossing the winning line first.

To survive by patience and fortitude, as a vessel rides a storm. Impossible to go forward or run before it the ship lowers or shortens her sail and rides the waves until the storm abates. A vessel also ‘rides’ to her anchor, although this may be because the old-fashioned word for anchor was roding, thought to derived from roadstead, the area where craft normally anchored. The expression let her ride originates from here and was part of an official order to discharge the crew at the end of the voyage and ‘let the vessel ride’.

t s e b s bite

ALL AT SEA MARCH 2016

Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

on in the v A r e iv R e h t Beside city with a a is is h t t s e w south istory. h e im it r a m s prosperou

Bristol Bristling with history, museums and art, this city is buzzing with fast, creative street food and you can tie up smack bang in the centre of the historic Harbourside

Bertinet’s brioche bronzed eggy bread at Spicer & Cole

BEST COFFEE

THE former city-centre port is now a cultural hub, the Harbourside. The harbour’s 19th-century warehouses now contain restaurants, shops and cultural institutions such as contemporary gallery The Arnolfini. This city has a long maritime history. Indeed Bristol was a starting place for early voyages of exploration to the New World. On a ship out of Bristol in 1497 John Cabot, a Venetian, became the first European since the Vikings to land in North America. The city is also associated with Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose designs included the Great

THE HIKE An easy circular harbour walk starting wherever you are moored up, crossing at the Avon Bridge so you can take in the new and old of Bristol, taking in the pastel coloured houses up on the ridge as you come back round towards Kaskelot and Bordeaux Quay.

Western Railway between Bristol and London Paddington and the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. In more recent times, in 2015 Bristol was the first city in the UK to be granted European Green Capital status.

YOUR ARRIVAL

From the mouth of the River Avon, the Cumberland Basin Entrance to Bristol’s Floating Harbour lies 10.5km up river. The entrance lock is on port side approximately 0.7km beyond the Clifton Suspension Bridge. We have tied up near Bordeaux Quay. It is a quick caffeine stop first – and what a choice. My favourite roasters Extract are based here in Bristol and many of the best cafes serve it, including Spicer & Cole, with an outlet handy for the harbour in Queen’s Square, and another up in Clifton. I recommend Bertinet’s brioche bronzed eggy bread for breakfast, crisp bacon on the side, puddle of maple syrup and a couple of flat whites to wash it down. We also liked Cosy Club, on Corn Street, which we passed on the way to St Nicks market, in a wonderful old bank build, with high, ornate ceilings. It is a reliable stop off any time of day.

Closest to Harbourside first - Small Street Espresso (near St Nicks) and Blue Pig Café up on Colston Street. You will tackle the Christmas Steps to get there; it is near Zerodegrees (see later) and some cool shops. Bearpit Social is a bit of a hike, but worth the visit if you find yourself in central Bristol and Full Court Press, real specialists, at 59 Broad St (not far from Small Street, but open earlier) are also top notch and run coffee appreciation courses.

GREAT MARKETS

Now weave your way over to St Nicholas market – as you can do the circular walk round the harbour later. You will find a few Bristol institutions here such as Pieminister, which surely has the best pies around. Fantastic crisp pastry, a great choice of fillings and a witty name, what more do you want? Also, the queues build outside Matina for their fragrant marinated lamb kofta in springy fresh Kurdish Naan bread. Other stalls include Ahh Toots (coffee and cake), Source Food Café (and shop – good for provisions) and Playground Coffee, not forgetting Pickled Brisket for a warm salt beef roll. You can also find them at Harbourside Market every weekend and there is another market at the Tobacco Factory.

BEST BAKERS

Harts, under the arches at Temple Meads, are so worth the trip. Everything is good here, from huge spicy sausage rolls to their Portuguese custard tarts. Also try Stock Exchange up near St Nicks. Further afield, Park Bakery is renowned for its pizzas on the weekend. There are also some great

The queues build outside Matina

Tasty pizza at Zerodegrees

delis around including Papadelis and Wainwrights up at Clifton and a decent counter back at Bordeaux Quay, which is handy if you are moored there.

BEST BURGERS

HEAD TO CLIFTON

If you want a real leg stretch get up to Clifton and head for Primrose Café, opposite a mouth watering Wainwrights Deli and a fab vegetable shop that stocks some top produce. Fill the bags then I dare you to pass Anna’s door without sliding in to try some of her very fine, made on-site patisserie – try the tiny Canelles as they are works of art. You can walk up to Clifton along the water, then back by Whiteladies Road to take in even more food and shopping choices.

BEST BEER

I know we do not always cover this, but when in Rome. With a positive rising of craft brewers in this epicenter of creativity you do not need to travel far between watering holes. Try the Grain Barge when you are doing your circular walk, but do not miss Copper Jacks Crafthouse, in one of Bristol’s many rejuvenated banks. Try Zerodegrees for home crafted beer and lager – try the mango – and a great stop off for a quick wood fired pizza. There is also The Apple, for ciders, next door to Three Brothers. On the Harbour there is the delightfully named Welsh Back.

COCKTAILS

My favourite, Milk Thistle, is a glorious dark speak easy behind a well hidden door. Top tip - look for the engraved stone thistle above the doorframe. The best drink for a sailor is the Rhum Conference with gold, white, French Blanc Agricole and spiced rums stirred with Demerara sugar and bitters. Another good choice, but further away is Hausbar.

For me Chomp is interesting as I also happen to like Bourbon. You also have Three Brothers on a barge at Welshback, conveniently close to the mooring and great value with a £5 lunch deal. There is Grillstock (seriously meaty) Burger Theory at various markets with good veggie choices, and my favourite chain is still Byron, but a bit of a hike on the Triangle near Clifton, and last but not least Five Guys, which is over at Cabot Circus.

NEW OPENING

You can tell there is just too much to fit into my usual page but I must add a new opening. Just down from the boat, beyond Three Brothers, is Adelina Yard, modern European and recommended by Xanthe Clay, so well worth a punt.

MARINA CHAT WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE MARINAS

POWER WINS THE DAY...

Retired boat owner, James Adams is a seasoned sailor but nowadays tends to enjoy the assurance that comes with motor cruising, taking day trips on the Solent in his Finnmaster 6400 MC motorboat. A loyal member of the marina since 1986, in both its guises as Camper & Nicholson’s and then Premier’s Gosport Marina, we find out more about why he chooses to ‘boatel’ rather than having an in water berth. I TEND to change boats every two to three years due to changing requirements. I either buy from the manufacturer, agents or brokers in UK, Holland or Finland. I will go wherever the boat is, although for the last boat I did not have to travel too far as it was in Plymouth.

mitigate otherwise, led me to motorboats. I take frequent trips around the Solent and sometimes out to Poole; we only ever do day trips. The boat has limited cooking facilities, so we always go ashore to a good pub. We have several favourite locations including Premier’s Marina at Port Solent, which has several eateries all within walking distance of the visitors’ pontoon. BENEFITS OF DRY STACKING I chose dry stacking over in water berthing for the whole level of convenience and avoiding deterioration associated with having a boat in the water when not in use. When I take the boat out for winter I put the cover on it and, apart from winterising the engine and adding heaters, all I do is come down every four to six weeks to make sure everything is in order.

SAILING YACHTS VS MOTOR YACHTS I took sailing up when I was in the Air Force, mid-career. I was over in Cyprus when I learnt to sail with my wife. I have had sail boats, however the wish for ‘upright’ sailing, plus the desire to actually arrive at a planned destination on a day sail when wind or tide conditions

Sometimes I will even ring the office and get them to check the boat is ok. I also use the shipwright, engine services and an electrician located onsite at Gosport Marina. THE WHOLE PACKAGE Sea Start is a useful service and full membership comes with my annual dry stack package. I have only had to use it once in the last three years and that was last season when my engine would not start due to a flat battery. Sea Start came out in half an hour, got it started and the battery re-charged in around 20 minutes and then off I went – they were very good. MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS

WATCHET HARBOUR MARINA

10 The Esplanade, Harbour Road Watchet TA23 0AJ 01984 631264 enquiries@watchetharbour.co.uk www.watchetharbour.co.uk

Sheltered by Exmoor and right at the edge of the Bristol Channel, Watchet offers a small friendly marina away from the boating masses with a tranquil atmosphere. KNOWN as ‘The friendly marina’ Watchet has become a facility where the staff are always welcoming and daily life very relaxed. Built only 15 years ago to kick start the regeneration of the town, the marina continues to be the focal point of the town with never a dull moment. Offering almost all the facilities a yachtsman could wish for, more and more people have discovered Watchet over the years much to their benefit.

The staff at Watchet are always keen to point out that whilst Watchet will never match the ‘clinical corporate world’ of some bigger marinas, being a small privately owned marina does offer many advantages, and not just competitive pricing. With a buzzing marina community, there are always people about to lend a friendly ear or a skilled set of hands.

LOCATION

WATCHET Harbour Marina is the only marina on the English coastline between Land’s End and Portishead. This location, plus the fact the marina is right in the centre of the small sleepy town of Watchet make for an extremely sociable and friendly place. The marina is located on the doorstep of the Bristol Channel, with all the amenities adjacent to it. It is a very relaxed site, the local fishing is excellent and the scenery stunning and unspoilt.

Watchet can accommodate up to around 200 vessels and up to 25m in length (and have a number of these larger craft berthed here). Although vessels are constrained by the 7m width of the marina entrance most pleasure craft can berth in the marina.

All of the berths are pontoon berths, either on individual fingers or alongside walkways. Watchet gladly accepts liveaboards as they find it adds to the security and friendliness of the site. The marina is conveniently located for people who work in the local area, with good road access to surrounding towns and, being in Somerset, there are very few traffic jams!

FACILITIES

WATChET was originally built in 2000 and opened in 2001. The facility was built within the confines of the existing harbour, one of only very few official ancient ports of the UK. Additional berths were added early on, and there has been expansion and enhancement of the boatyard facility and services on offer. There is a long-term vision to develop the adjacent quayside into a class leading shore based facility to enhance the marina. Mains electricity and fresh water is available throughout the marina and boat yard. Both the marina pontoons and the boat yard are accessed via security gates. The marina has the capability to lift up to 20 tonnes with the on-site crane, and regularly lifts and store larger vessels with hired in cranes. A full range of yard services are available inside the secure and supervised boatyard. The marina has its own chandlery and café as well as a marine engineering business. Most marine related services are available either

on site or within the local vicinity, with numerous mobile companies basing themselves here. Although marine services are available they also encourage owners to undertake maintenance themselves subject to safe practice. Watchet has plentiful car parking and good, clean on shore washing facilities. CCTV covers much of the site, and there is Wi-Fi availability also. Whilst the site is not manned 24 hours a day, there are always staff nearby on a call-out basis.

The marina offers recycling and waste disposal as well as selling marine diesel and gas. All the facilities offered to berth holders are also available to visiting yachts. The marina regularly hosts rallies and large groups of visiting craft. The marina staff often go out of their way to assist any boat owner, such as collecting petrol from the local service station or receiving and delivering items that have been sent by courier.

ACCESS

ThE marina is accessed through the Outer harbour and then directly into the Bristol Channel. Whilst full tidal access is not possible, vessels can enter and leave the marina approximately 2.5 hours either side of high Water. The marina is impounded by a fully automatic tidal flap gate, controlled by a fully automatic red: green traffic light system. The shore outside of the harbour dries completely on the outgoing tide with a rocky bottom. They recommend that if a vessel wishes to wait outside that they proceed very slightly to the West and anchor in Blue Anchor Bay. here you will find good holding and shelter. On spring tides there can be quite a flow across the Outer harbour Entrance and swirling within the marina entrance itself just after gate opening. The marina recommend that if this is a first visit, to call the marina office first who will explain the best method of approach. The marina office is manned during daylight hours with a listening watch on VhF Ch. 80. They ask that all visiting craft call up before entering the marina. The recommended course of action is to enter the outer harbour and use the sheltered waters to contact the marina office, set fenders and lines etc. For an entrance outside of daylight hours, boats are welcome

LOCAL EATERIES

BEING located in the centre of the town, there are numerous pubs and eateries just minutes from the pontoons, alongside numerous other business and services to cater for people’s needs. In fact, Watchet is well known for having eight pubs within a two minute walk of the pontoons. The marina building hosts a leading local café with some excellent snacks and hot drinks available as well as Styles Ice Cream. There is an Indian Restaurant (The Spice Merchant) just along the main road and numerous pubs such as the Star and The Bell offering not just famous Somerset Cider, but a whole host of locally sourced meals. The Watchet Boat Owners Association have their regular meetings in Watchet’s famous Esplanade Club, winner of many a CAMRA award and overlooking the marina, and visiting sailors are welcome whenever it is open. The marina office is also host to a small chandlery with most essentials available in stock or next day. There are two large convenience stores along with a host of other small town shops within a couple of minutes’ walk of the marina with most things available. There are larger stores about 20 minutes’ walk away in the next town, or larger facilities in both Minehead and Taunton.

The West Somerset Steam Railway speaks for itself as does Exmoor National Park but there is far more available. The town hosts two different museums and a fascinating history, and just along the coast (by steam train if you fancy) is Minehead and Butlins for the children. There are also two easily reachable animal attractions – one being a small country zoo (Tropiquaria) and the other an ‘open’ farm (doniford Farm). Coupled with some spectacular coastal walks and plentiful cycle routes such as the old Mineral Line, there is no excuse to get bored. As one of only three official ancient ports (a traceable port history for over 1,000 years) and the location of a rare event where a ship of war was captured by ground based troops on horseback, Watchet has a fascinating local history. With one of the UK’s longest steam railways right on the marina’s doorstep and museums and local history abound, there is something for everyone. n www.tropiquaria.co.uk n www.donifordfarm.co.uk n www.esplanadeclub.net n westsomersetrailway.vticket.co.uk n www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk n starinnwatchet.co.uk

ThINGS TO dO to come in on a green traffic light (automatic cycle) and pick up a vacant berth. They then ask the crew to make themselves known to the marina office in the morning. By road, the harbour is located just off the main road running from Minehead where it splits towards either Bridgwater or Taunton. The marina is approximately 45 minutes from the M5. There is a mainline rail link running into Taunton and a good bus link to Watchet. There is also the novelty of being able to travel for most of this route via steam engine on the West Somerset Steam Railway.

CRUISING

CARdIFF Bay is located approximately 17nm to the north of Watchet. Alternatively Porlock Bay can offer a sheltered anchorage for a long day trip. Cardiff, Barry and Portishead all offer options for weekend cruising, as well as other nearer destinations such as Minehead and the picturesque Porlock Bay. Swansea is slightly further afield but perfectly achievable as are many of the destinations further along the Bristol Channel. Many people choose to head towards Milford haven and the South Wales coastline. There are numerous beautiful harbours offering a wide range of facilities, peace and tranquillity. Also Ilfracombe, Padstow and other UK harbours are within easy reach and make for stunning boating. The Bristol Channel is a large area with limited tidal access in many areas, therefore careful forward planning is strongly advised. however this should not stop most people from venturing along the coastline, with shelter being available from both the UK and the Welsh Coastlines.

ONE thing Watchet is not short of is things to do. There are regular buses to and from both Minehead and Taunton and all the villages in-between. The bus stop is very close to the marina. There are also numerous small local taxi companies, and of course that steam train.

PERSONAL RECOMMENdATIONS

“As well as having a community of boat owners who live on their boats in the Marina all year round, Watchet also attracts Mariners from across the Bristol Channel and beyond. At the Esplanade Club we have members in Wales who come over at weekends and during the holidays to listen to our live bands. At the height of summer a fleet of boats can regularly be seen making their way towards the harbour entrance. We have many marine visitors throughout the year and they often like the marina and town so much that they return time and time again and bring their families and friends with them.” Roy Chave, Watchet Esplanade Club and owner of fishing boat ‘Tungafoss’

Whitehaven Marina has some new and unusual visitors A pair of otters have decided to make Whitehaven Marina their home for a while. The pair, thought to be a male and female have made their home or the technical word is “holt or couch” under one of the walkway bridges. The otters have been named by the marina team as “Ant and Deck” and are often seen swimming around the marina and find it easy to jump up out of the water and settle on the decked area under one of the access bridges. With so much fresh water having drained in to the marina in recent months, perhaps they think they are in some form of fresh water lake. Finding food doesn’t seem to be a problem for them – they are finding top quality discarded shell fish brought in by the local fisherman. Although they are

largely solitary mammals, they seem unaware of the marina customers wandering around and to date they have not caused any problems to navigation. As the season gets underway perhaps they will decide to “lock out” of the marina and find a quieter place to spend the summer or perhaps they will decide to have their pups in their new safe and calm surroundings. We will let you know….

MDL TEAM PREPARES FOR EPIC CHALLENGE

DAVID Birch, Car Park Attendant at MDL’s Torquay Marina, is busy planning and preparing for an epic challenge. David intends to single-handedly cross the 75 miles from Guernsey to Torquay in Rosco, his 9ft Laser Pico dinghy, to raise money for Devon based Rowcroft Hospice in May of this year. Rowcroft Hospice was recommended to David as his sponsored charity by friends and has been described as being at ‘the heart of Devon’. The hospice serves the local community by providing specialist care to patients with progressive, life limiting illnesses. Although David has lots of experience on yachts he has less than two years experience of single-handed dinghy sailing, David commented: “I just think that if you’re going to do something for charity then it should be a challenge, something that you have to work hard to complete and worthy of people donating money to. This trip will take around 14 hours which in itself is a challenge when you’re sailing a singlehanded dinghy; it’s the logistics that can be as problematic as the endurance aspect.” David will have a support boat alongside him that will carry supplies and be there in case of emergencies, but David does plan to carry as much as he can in Rosco as he explains: “I’ve got one

of those army jackets which should be able to store a fair amount and I’ll also have a dry bag inside the dinghy for the storage of provisions.” To help with planning the trip and to track his progress, David has set up a YouTube channel which has been really useful so far. David said: “The YouTube channel has been a great tool for gathering advice from people on all topics from provisions, tactics and what I should wear, and it will serve as a useful way to track my progress throughout the preparations stage.” David hopes to reach and exceed his £5,000 target and has set up a JustGiving page to organise the donations, David explained: “I’m so grateful for any donation as well as any corporate sponsorship, I have opportunities on my sail and for stickers on my hull for companies’ logos and branding, as well as the more traditional financial donations through my JustGiving page.” MDL Marinas has donated generously and the hospice is being considered as the group’s charity of the year for all other fundraisers to support. You can follow David’s challenge via his YouTube channel at https://youtu. be/BFxQEdXjApo and you can donate online at https://www.justgiving.com/ David-Birch8.

NEW SHOTBLASTING PROCESSES ARE REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT TWO Solent based companies have joined forces to create a new, environmentally-friendly blasting process. Lymington Yacht Haven has constructed a purpose-built blasting bay that ensures the waste run-off from the process is contained, captured and properly disposed of and any airborne material is safely contained. Furthermore, Jeremy Rogers Ltd, based at the Lymington marina, has invested in a new Eco blast system, which uses modern blasting technology that is safer than using compressed air and allows for the waste material to be collected. Marina Director Rupert Wagstaff commented on the need to improve traditional blasting processes saying “Marinas and boatyards all have the same problem of blasting taking place in the middle of a busy area. By building a purposebuilt bay, boats can be blasted away from neighbouring boats while we ensure we capture even more copper residue run-off and dispose of it safely.” Kit Rogers of Jeremy Rogers Ltd said: “As an industry we all need to make efforts to reduce our environmental footprint. By working with Lymington Yacht Haven, we’ve been able to combine our new technology with a dedicated blasting area to make the process more eco-friendly”.

To mark the launch of the new service Jeremy Rogers Ltd are offering 10% off blasts in February and March 2016 with Lymington Yacht Haven offering a free launch off once the blast in complete. For more information call Jeremy Rogers Ltd on 01590 646780 or visit www.jeremyrogers.co.uk.

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

NEW YEAR NEW SAFETY NOTICE

The RYA launches the third edition of the Safety Advisory Notice

VISITORS to the RYA stand at the 2016 London Boat Show were able to pick up a copy of the latest edition of the RYA Safety Advisory Notice. Compiled for the leisure boater and first launched in 2014, the Safety Advisory Notice offers a simple digest of critical safety issues – including those that have arisen from incidents in the past year. Reviewing the Notice annually enables the RYA Safety Advisory Group to examine safety concerns that have emerged throughout the year and consolidate any lessons learnt. We hope that identifying the causes of incidents and accidents and how they might have been prevented will encourage us all to think about our own

actions in a different light and above all help to make better decisions both before setting off and when out on the water.

KEY TOPICS

The newly published third edition focuses on a further six key topics

for boaters to think about. There is a reminder about the need for keeping a look out; the purpose is simple. COLREG are intended to prevent collisions and avoid damage and injury – a lookout provides the information needed to comply with the rules. We should all keep this uppermost in our minds. The lack of a proper lookout is a contributory factor in a large number of collisions. Not all lifejackets and buoyancy aids are the same. The Safety Advisory Notice provides advice on choosing the correct one for your intended activity and to ensure that it fits correctly. The wrong footwear or worse no footwear at all may lead to injury and take the fun out of any boating activity. Our advice is to keep your feet protected; proper boating footwear allows you to move around without slipping or damaging your feet at a critical moment.

RADAR REFLECTORS

It is timely to think about radar reflectors again. Our advice is to fit a radar reflector on your boat if you can, but you should also be aware of the limitations of the passive radar reflectors currently available. Do not assume you have been seen and navigate with caution. Used correctly, a VHF radio is

invaluable, yet its misuse can be a nuisance and, worse, a danger at sea. Now is a good time to brush up on your voice procedure and to make sure you know how to use the channels. Finally, there has been considerable coverage about the visibility of anchor lights in anchoring situations. We urge you to ensure that arrangements are adequate for maintaining your safety at anchor at all times. Put an anchor light where is can be seen, not necessarily at the top of a mast. Think about how best to monitor your position and whether you need to maintain an anchor watch. The 2016 edition builds on the advice in the first and second editions of the Safety Advisory Notice, which covered a broad range of topics from the use of kill cords and prop guards, alcohol and boating, carbon monoxide poisoning to the proper registration of EPIRB and PLBs and weather forecasts.

KEEP LEARNING RYA courses can help to extend your safety knowledge – whether you’re interested in sailing boats, windsurfing, jet skis, powerboats or motor cruisers. We urge all members of the boating community to undertake the necessary training to help you be safe and enjoy more. Visit our online safety hub for your copy of the Safety Advisory Notice 2016 along with a wealth of practical advice and top tips at www.rya.org.uk/go/safety

ME AND MY BOAT SHARE YOUR LOVE OF BOATING WITH THE NATION

“We have a Sealine 35 flybridge and it is docked in Weymouth, Dorset. When the sun is shining there is nothing better than being out in your boat going along the coast. We even saw dolphins in August last year, which made boating all the more worth it. “We live in a lovely area of the country and within an hour we can be in Poole. We also love Swanage and always go to Lulworth Cove in the summer. My partner, Paul, loves wakeboarding and when the water is flat we both like paddle boarding. In the evenings we enjoy going to other friends’ boats and having barbecues on the pontoons. “It is a very sociable lifestyle. We love our days out and have met and made so many lovely friends.” Donna Freeman via Facebook

Malbec - French or Argentinian? Same grape, different flavours. Take your pick. MALBEC is a deep ruby red wine suited to winter roasts and later on for summer barbecues. It is made from Malbec grapes, a dark violet-blue variety born in the Bordeaux region in southwest France and has its own AOC (controlled designation of origin) centred on the town of Cahors on a large U-bend of the Lot river and capital of the Lot Department. Locally it is often called ‘Côt’ (the original name of the grape) but Malbec is the wine’s official name. The grape is robust in tannins and used as a colour and flavour booster in a host of blended red wines and one of only six varieties permitted in the blend for red Bordeaux Claret wines. Growing the grapes is not so common in Bordeaux today as it is susceptible to rot, disease and frost, which in 1956 wiped out the Malbec vines. They were mostly not replanted as vintners switched to less fragile varieties. ARGENTINIAN FLAVOUR Out of favour in its home country, the Malbec grape made a very successful transition to Argentina where the grape has prospered in the climate and soil of Mendoza, south-west Argentina in the foothills of the Andes and the main area of all Argentinian wines. This is now home to over 70 per cent of the world’s Malbec production.

Same grape, two very different wines, and a dramatic example of how the ‘terroir’ of the vineyard impacts on the wine output of the grape. Some Malbecs are made for long ageing, and ageing in oak barrels is quite common in Argentina where Malbec tends to be plummy and fruit-forward, with a velvety soft texture. The French is more savoury, tart and blackberry.

THE DEBATE Any wine discussion on Malbec soon shifts to a French v Argentinian debate. My small tasting team of keen recreational wine enthusiasts came down heavily in favour of the Argentinian, for body, colour and flavour. This consumer preference echoes the opinion of many experts and is reflected in the retail shelves - plenty of Argentinian while the French is hard to find. Here are some I found as a basis for your own (or the sailing club’s) tasting-for-fun event. I predict at least some tasters will end up being Malbec enthusiasts.

FRENCH Vignobles W ERS Roussellet, 12.5 per cent, TH■E Malbec £4.39 at Aldi. ■ Pont du Diable 2014, 12.5 per cent, £8.99 at Laithwaites - “a French Malbec to seriously challenge the Argentinians” the blurb says. ■ Calvet Cahors Malbec 2014, 12.5 per cent, £8.65 a bottle at Tesco or a six-bottle case for £36.
