AmericA’s cup heAding to portsmouth FROM PAGE 1: The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series returns to Portsmouth from 21 - 24 July. It is the last chance to cheer on Sir Ben Ainslie and Land Rover BAR on home waters before qualifying for next year’s historic 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda. The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is all about the fastest foiling boats racing just metres away from the shore providing an adrenaline fuelled spectacle, with the world’s best sailors fighting it out in short, sharp races that will have spectators on the edge of their seats. Land Rover BAR’s Paul Campbell-James said: “You have got a lot of Brits across the teams which is great for the home crowd. Obviously our boat is full of Brits, then there’s Iain Percy on Artemis Racing and Chris Draper on Softbank Team Japan. Anyone can have their day, you have only got to look at the scoreboard to see that Emirates Team New Zealand lead with Oracle Team USA just in front of us. ” It is not just about the sailing. Off the water there is a packed three-day public programme of entertainment for all the family, including three aerobatic displays. The Blades Display Team will be flying on 23 July, with four high-performance planes flown by former RAF fast-jet pilots. The Blades join The Red Arrows, who are
bringing their squadron of nine red Hawk jets on 22 July. On 24 July it is the turn of the Red Bull Matadors to wow the crowds, as they twist and turn at speeds of up to 250mph in a series of loops, dives and spectacular smoke displays. Spectators can join the action on land in the new Race Village, home of a special Kids Zone, Tech Zone and Team Zone with lots of interactive activities. Before Portsmouth, though, there are events in New York (7 – 8 May) and Chicago (10 – 12 June). Alongside the racing there is still a great deal of development by teams taking place. Land Rover BAR has launched their third test boat, T3. The rules state that teams can only build one full-size 50ft America’s Cup Class boat. However, they can build shorter (45ft) versions as test boats. The rules also define much of the hull shape and structure, making wing and hydrofoil control systems one of the key technology battlegrounds. Just as wire cable linkages between the accelerator pedal and the carburettor in cars, rope aboard T3 have been replaced by sensors and electronics . T3 will sail from the team’s home in Portsmouth, with a full development and testing programme this summer. Turn to page 35 to win tickets www.lvacwsportsmouth.com/tickets

ALL ABOARD PRINCESS JOB CUTS CONFIRMED By Jane Hyde
OUR annual summer events guide returns this month. It has been wonderful to put together as it makes you realise how many great days out and events there are around the country. In fact there are so many shows, festivals, regattas and races that it was impossible to fit them all in, and so there are more events on the Boating Event Guide at www.allatsea. co.uk. If you are involved with an event please send the details over to editor@ allatsea.co.uk and we will add it to the listing. One of the sporting events that is going to dominate the news this summer is the Rio Olympics. It is incredible to think it was four years ago that the world’s attention was focused on London. This time, though, Rio will be under the spotlight and we cannot wait for the action to begin and the medals to start rolling in for Team GB. One person who knows all about the Olympic Games is double Gold medallist Sarah Ayton. She will not be at Rio, but the 2015 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year still has a busy year planned. We caught up with Sarah to find out what someone who has achieved so much already has in store for 2016 and beyond. Not surprisingly one of the sailors Sarah has a great deal of admiration for is Sir Ben Ainslie who, this month, battled it out in New York in the latest event of the America’s Cup World Series. In July the teams will return to the Portsmouth in what we hope will be a triumphant repeat of last year’s

result. If you have not yet bought your ticket or fancy going along for an extra day enter our competition to win tickets for the Friday (see page 35). Before the America’s Cup arrives, though, we have the incredible J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race on 2 July. Next month we will have a preview guide to this hugely popular event but first, over on page 29, we asked Mike Peskett, Principal Race Officer, to give us an insight into the build-up to this iconic event. Let us know if you will be taking part this year and post your pictures on the All at Sea Facebook page. Sadly the news of a second death, that of Britain Sarah Young, in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race was a tragic reminder of the dangers sailors – both professional and amateur – face. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of following all safety procedures and having the right kit on board at all times. While not all incidents can be prevented the risks can be reduced with the right equipment and knowledge. It is a good time to check that your safety equipment is in good working order and, importantly, that you know how to use it, something Steve Brocket discusses on page 28. If in doubt always seek professional assistance. It is simply not worth risking the lives of you and your crew. Have a happy and, most importantly, safe month. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

A total of 172 jobs losses have been confirmed at Princess Yachts. In February we reported that Princess Yachts was planning an extensive restructure that would result in the loss of up to 350 jobs. The news came shortly after the business, which says it has a strong
order book, launched new yachts at the London Boat Show. Speaking to the Plymouth Herald, a spokesperson for Princess Yachts said: “Thanks to positive engagement with the workforce and trade union representatives, and a number of employees seeking voluntary
severance, the company has been able to minimise the impact of redundancies.” Princess Yachts employs more than 2,000 people in Plymouth and last month moved its sales and marketing team to Turnchapel, Plymouth.
Historic gold for Team GB sailor ALISON Young has written her name into the sailing history books, becoming the first British woman to win a World Championship title in a solo Olympic dinghy class. London Olympian Young, whose previous World Championship best was fourth in 2012, claimed an emphatic last race victory over USA’s Paige Railey to seal Laser Radial World Championship glory in Vallarta, Mexico and provide a huge boost to her Rio preparations. “It was pretty tense in that last race!” said Young, who finished fifth at her Olympic debut in 2012 and is already selected for Rio. Read more about Alison’s win over on page 20.

second clipper fatality raises new questions over safety
A second death in the Clipper Round the World Race has led to more questions about the safety measures in place for the participants. Sarah Young, a crew member aboard IchorCoal, died 12 days in to the ninth race in the 14-stage race from Qingdao, China to Seattle. Sarah had already sailed more than half way round the globe with IchorCoal, covering 20,000nm before setting off on the latest leg of the race on 21 March. IchorCoal Skipper Darren Ladd reported that Sarah, a 40-year-old a company owner from London, was tidying the cockpit after reefing the mainsail in 35 – 40 knots of wind when she was knocked from her position by a wave. She fell back toward the guard wire and was swept under it by another wave. She was not tethered on to the yacht at this time and was swept away in strong winds. The boat immediately applied its man overboard drill but was hampered by the conditions and lack of direct visual. Her body was recovered using her AIS signal just over an hour later. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race teams paid tribute to Sarah, who was buried at sea after a ceremony on board IchorCoal. Darren Ladd wrote about Sarah’s adventurous spirit in his blog saying: “Sarah was an adventurer and lived life to the full. She died an adventurer’s death battling the elements circumnavigating the globe. I wish we could have said goodbye properly, we all do. The ceremony was for Sarah on behalf of all those who were fortunate enough to know her. Today we said goodbye, but she will always be present in our hearts.” Clipper Race Founder Sir Robin KnoxJohnston said: “On behalf of everyone at Clipper Ventures, I am deeply saddened by the loss of Sarah. She was a very popular and integral member of the Clipper Race family and knew our boats well, having sailed with us since London last summer. The safety of our crew has always been and continues to be our main priority and we shall investigate the incident immediately in full cooperation with the authorities.”
Her death follows that of London paramedic Andrew Ashman, who died in September on board the same boat. Andrew had been adjusting the sail of his team’s boat when he was knocked unconscious. Despite around 40 per cent of participants never having sailed before entering the race, Sarah and Andrew are the only fatalities in the 20 year history of the race. Later in the same race Da Nang – Viet Nam was knocked down when it was hit by a large wave in 45 knot westerly winds.
The boat did not need assistance but the wave damaged the port side binnacle and helming bars. As a precaution the team made the decision to retire from the race and make their way to Seattle under motorsail. Skipper Wendy Tuck reported that she and some crew sustained minor injuries and were understandably shaken by the incident. The tough North Pacific Ocean crossing from Qingdao, China to Seattle was eventually won by Northern Irish entry Derry~Londonderry~Doire, its third
consecutive race win. The Unicef team recorded its best ever result and first podium of the race series, finishing in second place after a duel with LMAX Exchange. The professional skippers leading each of the 12 teams reported the worst conditions they have ever experienced in this race with the yachts pounded by huge seas and winds gusting over 80 miles per hour. The race to New York via Panama from Seattle began on 28 April. www.clipperroundtheworld.com
Jutland Volvo ocean race finale at the Hague exhibition opens ON 19 May, in the centenary year, The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth will open a major exhibition to commemorate the largest naval battle in history, the Battle of Jutland. ‘36 Hours: Jutland 1916, The Battle That Won The War’ will be the most comprehensive exhibition ever staged on the subject and will highlight the essential role of the British Royal Navy in winning the First World War. Team Brunel resumes racing from the pit stop in The Hague during Leg 9 to Gothenburg last year. Image: Ainhoa Sanchez / Volvo Ocean Race
The Hague, scene of an enormously successful pit stop last year, has been chosen to host the finale of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18. The Hague’s Deputy Mayor and Alderman for Economic Affairs and Harbours, Karsten Klein, said: “Scheveningen harbour is an ideal spot for sailing professionals from all over the world. Something we were able to clearly demonstrate with last year’s pit stop.” The Dutch stopover will be preceded by a midsummer stopover in Volvo’s home city of Gothenburg, setting up the crucial last leg to the Netherlands in June 2018. Gothenburg will be hosting the race for the fourth time, from June 14 – 24, 2018, having staged stopovers in 2002, 2006 and 2015. Hong Kong has also been announced as a host of the Volvo Ocean Race for the first time when the event visits in February 2018. It will be the largest world-class sailing event ever staged in Hong Kong. The 13th edition of the world’s toughest offshore race will begin in Autumn 2017 with Alicante, Spain, the race’s headquarters since 2010, the departure port. Further port confirmations will be made in the forthcoming months with Newport, Rhode Island and Cardiff already announced. www.volvooceanrace.com

IOW TIdal pOWer prOjecT apprOved A state-of-the-art tidal energy generation project to be constructed off the isle of Wight has been granted approval. the Marine Management Organisation has given the go-ahead to the offshore elements of the Perpetuus tidal Energy Centre. the onshore part of the project was given planning consent by the isle of Wight Council last year. it is the largest consented tidal stream energy project in England and Wales. PtEC will commercially operate a range of different world-leading turbine technologies in a five square kilometre area off st Catherine’s Point, the southernmost tip of the isle of Wight. the project will bring international companies to the UK and accelerate the country’s

thE AM37 represents a new concept for the yachting world. Aston Martin and Quintessence Yachts celebrated the upcoming launch of the AM37 powerboat by showcasing its innovative design during the prestigious Milan Design Week, salone del Mobile. in April Quintessence Yachts held a worldwide preview of the AM37, a powerboat created to capture the performance, handling, comfort and style synonymous with Aston Martin. the AM37 is the result of years of research and development, challenging the status quo of the nautical world. Combining the maritime and automotive worlds with the universal characteristics of style and elegance, the AM37 offers a wonderful balance of design and engineering, performance and comfort, luxury and functionality. Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer
Marek reichman said: “it is true that a beautiful, simple shape is critical to a product’s success but it must also have drama, which is provided by surface language, proportions and through the choice of exciting materials. the most important attribute for Aston Martin is the language of design and we have transferred this language into AM37. the new powerboat represents the ideal combination of luxurious and technical materials, generating a powerful yet understated finished product.” Quintessence Yachts Chief Executive Officer Mariella Mengozzi said: “At Quintessence Yachts we translate design in functionality and technology to enhance the customer experience. We are proud to present elements of the AM37 at Milan Design Week, a boat that represents an entirely new concept for the yachting world.”
Record attempt in revolutionary powerboat British ocean racing legend Alan Priddy has re-launched his multi-million pound team Britannia round the world record bid. the boat will be crewed by a team of 12 including up to four wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women (Wis) on each of the seven legs of the voyage. Alan plans to use a revolutionary semi-wave slicing powerboat run on a fuel emulsion that slashes harmful emissions to shave up to seven days off the current record of 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes. that record is held by New Zealander Pete Bethune. the boat has been designed by Professor Bob Cripps, former technical Director of Vt halmatic. it will slice through the waves, rather than surfing them. this reduces fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent and should make the 24,000 mile trip smoother. the vessel will be powered by a revolutionary fuel emulsion, a mixture of diesel, water and emulsifier, that when burnt reduces harmful emissions such as particulate matter and NOx.
the effects of the emulsified fuel on the engines and the emissions will be monitored for the duration of the voyage and the results published by the Clean Fuel online in real time. if successful it could have major implications not just for the marine sector, but for the power generation and transport sectors. Last year Alan had to call a halt to the record bid after one of the record attempt’s major sponsors was no longer in a position to fund the project. the 80ft vessel, built out of marine grade aluminium, will be launched in september to allow it to complete its sea trials, which will include sailing around the UK and London to Monaco. to complete the record attempt the boat must pass through the suez and Panama Canals, cross the tropic of Cancer and the Equator and start and finish in the same place. the world record bid has the support of the royal Foundation of the Duke and
Duchess of Cambridge and Prince harry’s Endeavour Fund. the Endeavour Fund will support the selection and training process of the Wis crewmembers. Alan said: “i am delighted that we are receiving this generous and welcome support from the Endeavour Fund as part
of this historic record attempt. Back in 2014 when my team and i first started to talk about bolstering our crew with wounded and injured servicemen and women, we all knew that it was the right thing to do, especially as several of the existing crew have strong ties to the military.”

Russian replica tall ship bound for Plymouth
A famous russian tall ship will arrive in Plymouth in October. Shtandart is a three-masted, fully rigged frigate created to exactly replicate the legendary original, which was built by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703 as the first man-o’-war of the russian Baltic fleet. The original Shtandart was designed and built in five months for Peter the Great. The frigate was captained by the Tsar himself and was the flagship of the russian Navy, defending St Petersburg during the war with Sweden and saw active service until 1719. Like Peter the Great, who encouraged links with other
countries, the mission of the frigate Shtandart is to be an ambassador. Since 2000 she has travelled more than 100,000nm and visited over 200 ports in 17 countries across europe and Africa. Shtandart will be sailing into Sutton Harbour this autumn on its first visit to Plymouth. The tall ship will be berthed in Sutton Harbour, the historic harbour of Britain’s Ocean City, from 6 – 9 October. During her stay the historic working vessel will be open to visitors. www.shtandart.com / www.visitsuttonharbour.co.uk @Sutton_Harbour

Long awaited win for Light bLues’ men The men’s Boat Race ended up a far closer contest than that of the women’s. The 162nd staging of the Cancer Research UK Boat Race took place in tempestuous conditions after a dramatic women’s event in which the Cambridge boat almost sank in the latter stages. Prior to the men’s race the talk had concentrated on Cambridge’s impressive form and the ever-growing possibility of the light blue crew bucking the dark blue trend. From the start it was clear that Cambridge were a different animal to previous years, claiming a seat in the first 20 strokes. Cambridge responded to every Oxford move to cross the line some three lengths clear to claim their first victory since 2012. The women lined up on the Tideway on the same course and same day as the men for only the second time in varsity history - they previously raced at Henley. Off the start, both crews strayed into the middle as Cambridge stole the slightest of advantages. This was quickly checked by Oxford, who were touted as pre-Race favourites. Conditions worsened significantly towards the half way mark but Cambridge battled on bravely. Oxford eventually crossed the line over a minute ahead of their counterparts to make it four wins in a row.
charity’s royal visitor
THe Princess Royal met the Turn to Starboard team ahead of their round Britain sail. Princess Anne was visiting the sailing charity to meet staff, volunteers and beneficiaries and to mark the start of preparations for a bid to sail around Britain. During the visit the Princess Royal congratulated the charity on supporting injured veterans by teaching them to sail and helping them gain new qualifications. She then went to Pendennis Marina for a tour of a replica Tall Ship donated to the charity by the Prince’s Trust. While on board, Princess Anne presented Yacht Master certificates to two former Royal Marines, Dan Fielding and Stephen Spear. Turn to Starboard is run by a group of serving and retired Armed Forces personnel, civilian staff and volunteers who believe that sailing has a therapeutic and calming effect on participants. They help military personnel affected by operations to gain internationally recognised sailing qualifications to help start new careers anywhere in the world. They also offer sailing trips to Service families who have been affected by operations. Turn to Starboard founder RAF Squadron Leader Shaun Pascoe said he was delighted that Her Royal Highness had taken time to visit. He said: “We feel privileged to be visited
by The Princess Royal, particularly with her awarding two of our recent Yacht Masters their certificates. It was quite a special moment for them and for us, plus a boost to our participants who are preparing for the Round Britain Challenge.” The Princess Royal also met several beneficiaries preparing to sail around the British Isles in June. The Turn to Starboard Round Britain Challenge 2016 will see a crew of up to 30 veterans – many with little
or no sailing experience – sail aboard the ‘Spirit of Falmouth’ for the complete voyage or smaller sections of the route. The 2,000 mile expedition is expected to take eight weeks and is planned as a way to help participants gain new skills while highlighting the challenges some veterans face. Turn to page 18 to read more about the Turn to Starboard Round Britain Challenge 2016.

A super NeW BLACKCAT The BlackCat is a new superyacht catamaran. BlackCat, founded by champion Australian yachtsman Mitch Booth, has teamed up with world-renowned superyacht designer Malcolm McKeon to produce this luxury craft. Mitch said: “This ‘supercat’ concept is really exciting because there is nothing else available that combines the practicality of an enormous, stable, platform, with exhilarating
performance. The accommodation space on board is a whopping 340 square metres, all within a 50-metre vessel; something that has not been done until now. It is a logical progression for superyacht designs to move towards catamarans. There are so many advantages to large multihull cruising compared to our monohull cousins, such as speed, space, low heel, comfort, the list goes on and on.” blackcat-superyachts.com

The community based sail organisation Sail Boat Project is run out of Brighton, Chichester and Southampton as a Sailability RYA school and Training Centre. SBP has spent over two years independently raising funds to use sailing as a way of reaching people from disadvantaged communities and will shortly discover if they have qualified for National Lottery funding to continue their work. In 2015 SBP focused their efforts on people currently recovering from addictions and/or trying to work their way out of homelessness. They offered sail training to 15 people from the Worthing Churches homeless Projects’ residential projects in Worthing. SBP raised the funds through crowdfunding to prepare the 15 clients for two days on the water. They learnt the basics of sailing, spending a night at anchor in the peace of a beautiful anchorage, essential skills like cooking, teamwork and organising themselves, all steps towards their next stage of recovery - supported independent living. They all left the boat motivated, enthusiastic, confident and ready to take their next steps. Not just a sailing jolly, SBP used the sail
training as a tool to inspire and motivate people who need the extra support. The recovery from addictions can be a long and lonely one struggling to deal with learning to live life differently. Alongside learning new skills, sail training is recognised as an intervention which benefits participants by fostering teamwork, communication skills, developing self-confidence and self-esteem and overcoming barriers. Ben Gillett (Master of International healthcare Management) made an independent evaluation of the project, which states that: “Increased scores at both the individual client level and across the clients demonstrates improved mental well-being after the Sailing Forward initiative.” Chrissy, who spent time with the Sail Boat Project, said: “I discovered things about myself that I never knew. I never thought I would have an opportunity like this and I now see how I can use this trip as part of my recovery programme.” SBP accepts donations for future projects, which include working with homeless groups in Brighton, Chichester and beyond. www.sailboatproject.org

fishiNg BoAT reCovered PoRTSMouTh’S Atlantic 85 lifeboat Norma T was called out to investigate a partially submerged fishing boat on Southsea beach. The RNLI lifeboat crew searched the partially sunken fishing boat to confirm that nobody was trapped inside, with coastguard rescue units already on scene and previous reports to say that the skipper had been spotted earlier wading out of the
water. Their focus then changed to securing the wreck and preventing a potential environmental issue. It is believed that in the foggy weather, the fishing vessel struck an underwater World War 2 anti-submarine barrier causing extensive damage to the hull. Realising that his boat was taking on water the skipper took the decision to run the boat up the beach in an attempt to save it.

Getting Rio ready
All images: OnEdition
With just a few months remaining until the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony, Olympic medallists and medal hopefuls will be flocking to Weymouth and Portland this June for the last major multi-class regatta ahead of the Games.
THE Sailing World Cup Weymouth & Portland (6 - 12 June), run in partnership by the RYA, World Sailing and WPNSA as part of UK Sport’s #EveryRoadtoRio events series, will provide a key opportunity for the world’s best sailors to fine-tune themselves and their equipment and make a final bid for the Rio formbook before the Olympic Games showdown on Guanabara Bay this August. With WPNSA once again opening its doors for spectators throughout the regatta, the British Sailing Team is urging fans to come out in force and send their team off to Rio in style and with home support ringing in their ears. Olympic medallists Nick Dempsey, Luke Patience, Hannah Mills-Saskia Clark and Stuart Bithell will all be returning to the scene of their 2012 triumphs and will be among an elite international entry of 40 boats in each of the 10 Olympic disciplines, with an invitational kiteboard racing event also set to be held in Portland Harbour. Giles Scott will be favourite to retain his home World Cup crown in the Finn class, but will face tough competition from 2012 silver medallist Jonas Hoegh Christensen – aka ‘The Great Dane’ – and bronze medallist Jonathan Lobert from France, with Brazil’s former World Champion Jorge Zarif and 2015 World Cup silver medallist Josh Junior also likely to be in the running. China’s Aichen Wang, world number one and winner of the 2015 Rio Test Event, will feature alongside Nick Dempsey in the RS:X Men’s event, while China’s 2012 gold medallist Lijia Xu will be in action at the site of her Olympic glory, racing in a strong Laser Radial line-up with the British Sailing Team’s Alison Young, world number one and Olympic silver medallist Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands and Belgium’s world-ranked number two Evi Van Acker.
HOME REGATTA
2012 Olympian Young relishes the opportunity a home regatta brings about and hopes it will provide a boost ahead of Rio. “It is great to have a top regatta on home waters,” said Young, who finished fifth on the Weymouth waters at the 2012 Games. “Weymouth and Portland is a fantastic venue for racing so it is great for the other sailors to experience good competition and the conditions and it is nice for us to be competing at home! “It definitely gives you that added motivation racing at home and makes you want to put in a good performance.” Spectators at the regatta will also have the chance to see up close the two new additions to the Olympic sailing

The UK has over 1,000 miles of navigable canals and rivers which are home to an estimated 70,000 boats. With the same hugely popular, highly practical approach, Complete Ocean Skipper covers everything a yachtsman needs to know when planning an offshore cruise or ocean passage. A definitive handbook, it goes beyond the theory of the RYA syllabus to ensure that readers are equipped with the knowledge of both what to do and how to go about it, in whatever circumstances. THE NARROWBOAT GUIDE
ISLANDS IN A CIRCLE SEA by Sandra Clayton £9.35 / paperwork ISBN: 978-0-9915904-2-1
The Voyager series of books began because a middle-aged couple wanted a final fling with life, before it got too late. But the heart of the books are the places they sail on their 40ft cruising catamaran, the weather and wildlife they encounter on the way and the people they meet when they get there. The earlier books in the series took in
France, Spain, Portugal, The Balearics, Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, the Caribbean and America’s Intracoastal Waterway. This fifth and final book is a celebration of islands. For the North Atlantic, with its pattern of currents and trade winds, is a vast circling sea containing a lot of truly captivating ones. Like the earlier books, Islands in a Circle Sea is a mix of keen observation, people and places, humour, a bit of history, glorious seascapes and marine life - and the odd gale or two.

GOLDEN LILY
ASIA’S FIRST DINGHY SAILING GOLD MEDALLIST by Lijia Xu £9.99
Lijia Xu was born in Shanghai in 1987 and became a full-time sailor at the age of 10. She won bronze at Beijing in 2008 in the Laser Radial and gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games. She was the 2012 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. Golden Lily is the story of how Lijia Xu learnt to think; how she sought to learn from foreign books and coaches; how she conquered debilitating injuries (and personal disabilities of poor hearing and vision) and how she achieved her dream of winning a gold medal at London 2012. It was not an easy path. She broke her hand when training with her English coach at the start of the Olympic year and was unable to sail for three months. As a result, the Chinese team lost trust in her coach and limited their access to each other. This is an honest, heart-felt and inspirational story of a young woman’s will to succeed despite all that her background threw at her. Lijia is currently campaigning for selection to represent China once more at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

On 1 June a select few will embark on the journey of a lifetime. Harnessing the power of the wind, 22 crew members will challenge their mind and bodies to sail 2,000 miles around the coast of Britain. The story begins, though, five years ago when Shaun Pascoe purchased windsurfing equipment. He was hoping to enjoy a relaxing life on the lakes near his home in Cornwall. It was the first time in 16 years that the former RAF Squadron Leader could spend quality time with his wife, Clare, and six children. After leading a helicopter medical emergency response team on tours in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Iraq, Shaun had witnessed the horrors of war and found it difficult adjusting to normal life. He felt isolated and found it difficult to share his experiences, even with his loved ones. Rather than face his situation alone he began teaching windsurfing to other veterans who were experiencing similar difficulties before going on to gaining a RYA Yachtmaster qualification. “There is something really quite special about sailing,” said Shaun.
“It can provide a therapeutic and calming effect and when you are out at sea there is nothing to trigger the unwelcome memories that are associated with past experiences.” Using the qualification Shaun began providing sailing opportunities for veterans by offering day trips along the Cornish coast and to the Isles of Scilly, amassing a significant following and support along the way. He went on to register his services as a charity in July 2012 and Turn to Starboard was born. Within three years the organisation had expanded to include eight fulltime employees and 174 volunteers, all helping serving and retired military personnel suffering with physical injuries or mental traumas. The charity helps serving or retired military personnel gain internationally recognised RYA sailing qualifications free of charge to help them start new careers anywhere in the world. They also offer sailing trips to Service families who have been affected by operations to spend time together on a skippered yacht.
Shaun decided to lead a team of veterans and sail around Britain enabling participants to take further sailing qualifications, take on the challenge of a new adventure and highlight the challenges that veterans face.
THE CHALLENGE After repeatedly witnessing the healing benefits of sailing Shaun decided to lead a team of veterans and sail around Britain enabling participants to take further sailing qualifications, take on the challenge of a new adventure and highlight the challenges that veterans face. The Round Britain Challenge 2016 will see a core crew of 16 – many with little or no sailing experience – sail aboard a 92ft replica Tall Ship for the whole trip or smaller sections of the route. They will be joined by two yachts also crewed by veterans to meet the high demand for places. Image: Mile Searle
In 2014 The Prince’s Trust donated the replica Tall Ship the Spirit of Falmouth that will be used for the challenge
“The Round Britain Challenge will provide an opportunity for these individuals to push themselves in a challenging environment and work as a team alongside other veterans,” Sean explained. Departing from the charity’s base in Falmouth, the crew will set sail aboard the Spirit of Falmouth, a wooden gaff-rigged replica schooner. Heading eastwards on an anti-clockwise route the crew will soon be confronted by Britain’s east coast, which is open to swell from the Arctic Ocean with waves that can be troublesome to sailors. The epic journey is expected to last eight weeks and will stop at ports including Ipswich, newcastle-uponTyne, Glasgow, Liverpool and, time permitting, The Isles of Scilly. DEMANDING CONDITIONS Alongside physical exertion, sleep deprivation and the psychological challenges of living and working in a turbulent natural environment, the crew will face demanding weather conditions and complex navigational tasks. However, rewards will be plentiful from astonishing views of Britain’s intricate coastline to useful practical skills for the future. The expedition is also expected to provide an excellent lesson in seamanship, allowing the crew to acquire experience in all kinds of conditions and will contribute to RYA qualifications upon their return. Sailing is also known to provide elements that mirror the ethos of Armed Forces life, such as team cohesion and leadership skills. This can help participants gradually adjust to civilian life while gaining comfort from those in a similar situation. Shaun believes the trip will help those on board to find a positive path for the future. “After I was medically discharged due to an injury I was no longer part of a team and slowly lost my sense of self worth,” explains former Royal
Marine and crew member, Dan Fielding, 35. “Through spending time with the charity, I found that sailing requires a huge amount of teamwork if you want to arrive somewhere safely. This challenge will not only help me build up self-esteem, but I will also gain transferable skills along the way.” Dan is just one of the 21,756 men and women who have been medically discharged from the British Armed Forces for health reasons since 2001. Out of an estimated 45 million veterans worldwide, many return home with physical or mental health conditions and turn to the charitable sector for support to readjust to the pressures of civilian life. INVALUABLE SUPPORT The cost of the voyage will be met by Turn to Starboard who receive support from a range of benefactors and are believed to be the only organisation supported by all five major military charities. “You do not often associate soldiers with sailing, but Turn to Starboard provides a truly unique way to help injured veterans,” said Brigadier (Ret’d) Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff at ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. “We are proud to support this charity as they really work hard to make significant changes to the quality of life of those they help.” In 2014 The Prince’s Trust donated the replica Tall Ship the Spirit of Falmouth that will be used for the expedition. Rustler Yachts in Falmouth also gifted a boat hull, worth nearly £60,000, to help the charity start a boatbuilding programme. FOLLOWING THE BRITISH TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO
Riding high for Rio In this month’s British Sailing Team column Alison Young reflects on her history-making win at the Laser Radial World Championship in Vallarta.
It has not been long since I won the Laser Radial World Championships in Mexico, and I must admit it is still a bit weird to hear ‘World Champion’ and my name in the same breath. I am still me, I am still going to mess up in racing from time to time like everyone does, but it was just great to win the Worlds and it is a big confidence boost into the rest of the season, with the Rio Olympic Games three months away now. My progress prior to the Worlds had been going well, but I was conscious that I had had a string of fourths and fifths heading in to the event, and that does start to grind on you after a while. While there is plenty still to work on between now and the Games, it is great to know that the programme we have put together is heading in the right direction,
and it can deliver, but also that we can still make some adjustments over the next few months to improve on that. FIRST AT VALLARTA I had never been out to Vallarta before so was not sure what to expect, but conditions-wise we had mid-range stuff of around 8-14 knots with a little bit of chop and not a lot of room on the race course. As ever with the Radials it was pretty tight racing, but I really enjoy that about the Laser. You can work really hard to find a little speed edge and you know that it is not down to having better equipment or a technological advantage. It is pure racing, and it comes down to technique and the decisions you make on the race course. Fitness is also really key – I
am fairly tall and have got good leverage so being able to get the most out of that when the breeze does come in is a big advantage. In the end the Worlds win came down to just a single point over USA’s Paige Railey, and I won the last race of the series to secure my World Championship gold, which was a great way to finish. GREAT SUPPORT I had not won a World Championship medal before, let alone a gold one, and to become the first British woman to win a Worlds in a single-handed Olympic dinghy is obviously a huge achievement. It was cool to get so many messages of support, and from such a variety of people who you would not necessarily expect to be following sailing. that has been really nice. But of course the Olympics is the big goal for this year and there is still work to do to be successful there. We have got some areas that we are working on in decision-making which we are keen to keep evolving and pushing forwards, and then there is some Rio-specific work on aspects of technique as well as getting a better handle on the venue conditions. I am also excited that we have a home World Cup in Weymouth & Portland coming up (6-12 June), which will be our

final major event before the Games, and a great opportunity for spectators to come and see what elite Olympic classes racing is all about, and get behind the team as we head to Rio. It is going to be a busy few months and there is some hard work ahead, but I am really motivated for that final push. Hayling Island’s Ian Garside shares his love of boating – be it power or sail and UK or further afield.
MY preference was, and still is, for sailing. Unfortunately, aged 76 and a collection of replacement titanium joints has made it no longer possible for me to charge around the foredeck, single-handedly setting spinnakers, poling out genoas or climbing masts. My present boat is a Windy Tornado 31. It has four berths, generous sized heads, cooker, microwave and a cockpit large enough to seat eight. It has a sink, fridge and large cockpit table, making a very sociable area. There is also a brilliant canopy giving six foot standing headroom, with various removable panels allowing many permutations until ultimately a bimini. All these combinations can be used at any speed. The boat has a deep ‘V’ performance hull, without performance power. This gives a soft, safe, economical ride, so that I can travel in a relaxed and comfortable manner without it costing me a fortune. She will happily cruise all day at 25 knots with a maximum of 35 knots on six or seven gallons per hour giving a safe range in excess of 200 miles.
POWER BENEFITS With power you can make better use of these windows. Tides, unless against force 4 or more, are much less of a problem and the lack of wind, early and late, make for comfortable motor cruising. To start our annual summer holidays I regularly used to travel after work at 6pm from Hayling Island, arriving at Torquay by 9.30pm. I was met by my wife and children to take my warps. They left at the same time by car and arrived half an hour before me. I kept my boat in Southern Brittany for many years. Leaving La Roche Bernard at 6am would get me to La Rochelle in a flat calm with croissants on the table for the children’s breakfast at 10am with them saying: “Where are we dad? We have got new neighbours.” I have now reached a good compromise by taking charter sailing holidays in at least 50ft Sunsail boats with a competent and enthusiastic crew of eight. A very experienced No.1 gives me permission to call myself ‘Captain’ and does all the foredeck work. We have cruised in the Bahamas, BVIs and twice in Croatia very successfully and enjoyably. The motorboat is reserved for Solent and Channel cruising, mostly day sails and the occasional overnighter out of Port Solent. The moral of the story is to stay afloat at all costs. Whether it is power or sail, there are still more than enough magical days to make you keep coming back for more.
IN NEED OF CREW? Having owned about ten sailing boats over the 53 years of my sailing experience, it has become a principle of mine that if you cannot single-hand your boat, you should not be doing it. Consequently, I have converted all my later sailing boats so that, apart from spinnaker work, all jobs can be handled from the cockpit. Crew can, of course, be a great help but in some cases a liability. Over the years there has been a tendency to grow bigger and better and consequently more powerful. If the weather gets a bit boisterous, then the combination of bigger sails and added years becomes an ever increasing problem in terms of safety. I have to admit that in ideal conditions, getting from A to B in a sailing boat wins hands down over power but ideal conditions occur far too rarely in the decreasing number of weather windows in these latitudes.
We want to hear about you and your boat too! Send us some high resolution photos and details about your boat and boating life or fill in the form at www.allatsea.co.uk. You could be in these pages next month…

Q&A WITH SARAH AYTON OBE, ISAF ROLEX WORLD SAILOR OF THE YEAR AND TACTICIAN WITH THE 2015 EXTREME SAILNG SERIES WINNERS THE WAVE, MUSCAT. CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING ISAF ROLEX WORLD SAILOR OF THE YEAR. HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN?
It was really exciting. It was the first time they had voted on the evening and so everyone was waiting. The envelope was opened and my name was announced. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the last two years’ sailing on The Wave with Oman Sail. It has been a great time getting back into competitive sailing and it was wonderful to have that moment to share the success and one that my children are very proud of.
BRITAIN DOMINATED THE NOMINATIONS IN 2015. WHAT MAKES THE BRITS SO GOOD AT SAILING?
Image: Rolex / Qilai Shen
As well as a good amount of talented sailors who really push each other to be the best at what they do, one of the factors is having such a good youth to Olympic programme. Hopefully we will see an extension of that again with Land Rover BAR. We have a really good focus when it comes to performing at an Olympic Games and the infrastructure that goes around that. I think that really stems from 1996 when we had Lottery Funding. Sailors can now be professional in what they do. You need to be full time and have that infrastructure around you.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THE EXTREME SAILING SERIES?
Leigh McMillan, skipper of The Wave, Muscat, asked me to join the team in 2014 as the fifth 132x164 QuarterPage.qxp_Layout 1 11/03/2016 16:29 Page 1

YOU HAVE HAD HUGE SUCCESS IN YOUR CAREER INCLUDING TWO OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS. WHAT SAILING AMBITIONS DO YOU STILL WANT TO FULFILL?
I am really passionate about creating opportunities for kids. I am in the process of putting a sailing academy together. We want to make it easy for schools to go sailing through their local sailing clubs and make it affordable for local kids to try sailing. We want to introduce the competitive side of it. Sailing is hugely technical but we want to fast track a child’s journey from stepping into a boat to competing. I am taking a different direction with my career and trying to make a difference to the next generation.
WHAT IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE ON THE WAVE, MUSCAT?
As fifth crew member I was the smallest person on the boat. I got to run around a lot and preset stuff for manouevres. That can be full on considering when we got round a mark we were generally doing something. There was always something to do and, of course, feeding in information for the next leg of the course. So the
role is one big picture strategy, but it is incredibly dynamic. What makes a team good is everyone being able to interact and take on a varied number of jobs. Whatever needs to be done you have to be flexible.
YOU ARE A GREAT INSPIRATION. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?
The most important thing is to really enjoy what you do. It is great fun and you make wonderful friends. We are very privileged to do what we do. So enjoy it and set some realistic goals. Get the basics right and do not get carried away with all the fancy stuff. Get out on your boat, get tacking, gybing and that will get you a long way.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SAILING?
I love the technical side to it. I really enjoy understanding what makes a boat go fast. The other thing is the team dynamic; working towards becoming a high performing team. Learning how in the Extreme five people can interact and always ensure they are making smart decisions and keeping the energy levels in the boat high.
HAVE YOUR LITTLE BOYS DONE ANY SAILING YET?
The three of us (Thomas 6 and Oscar 4) are known for going out in our Optimist in Chichester Harbour. We only last 10 minutes because they are only young. Thomas, the eldest, looks great in the boat so we will see what happens there.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
In the UK we are really blessed with the BAR programme. That team led by Sir Ben Ainslie will be a huge inspiration. Also Leigh Macmillan. It is great to see him a part of Land Rover BAR. It shows if you work hard eventually you will get the reward you deserve. There is also Team SCA in the Volvo Ocean Race. There were a couple of mothers on the crew, and I cannot imagine sailing around the world. That is a huge inspiration. I really hope they can get another all female crew in the next race.

crew member. It was such an easy decision for me. Having been out of competitive sailing since 2008 I was ready to get back on the water. I knew these boats were pretty feisty, and so I had to get fit and integrate into a team full of boys which was great. The racing is intense and full on, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I have had a few; it is always nice to win. In 2004 winning my first Olympic Gold. I learnt a lot through that journey. Then in 2008 we really dominated the class (Yngling). That was special to win another gold. And now here we are. It was different in the Extreme because I have two children and it is really nice sharing my success with my family.

NATIONAL 18 GETS AN UP-DATE
A National Treasure
The Good Wife just in the lead. Image: Bob Bateman
The National 18, the only three-person performance centreboard dinghy, is thriving and for its 75th anniversary received a new sleek and speedy Morrison design. N18 sailors are family friendly and sail with vibrant fleets in Ireland, Scotland, England and the Isle of Man, racing for trophies at national championships. With one trapeze they can be raced competitively by a wide range of age, weight and experience and they are fun to sail in all wind strengths. To mark the 75th anniversary and the demise of the ageing Class moulds, in 2013 Phil Morrison was asked to design a new generation. His brief was to stay as far as possible with existing dimensional rules and produce a hull that is sleeker, lighter and faster. A prototype was funded by Class members, built at the Boatyard at Bere, launched in October that year and trialled extensively in the UK and Ireland. There were rave reviews and formal approval followed at the July 2014 AGM. A builder was appointed in the autumn with 11 boats built that winter and subsequently enjoyed during the 2015 season. More are in build for 2016.
THE N18 IS BORN
The first N18s were built in 1938 following a design competition run by the RYA and Yachting World magazine. This competition was won by Uffa Fox with his ‘Ace’ design; a plumb-stemmed wooden clinker hull with a heavy centreboard that could safely lie at a mooring. After the war years the Class grew rapidly and took hold at several clubs around our coasts and also in Ireland and, perhaps surprisingly, on the Thames at Twickenham and Teddington. Several of these wood clinker 18s are still in commission and regularly race, principally at Bosham.

moulded, vinyl ester and core cell foam construction with a gel coat finish to all external surfaces. The foils (centreboard and rudder) are also moulded construction with epoxy resin laminated with reinforcing carbon fibre and expanding foam. The spars (mast, boom and spinnaker pole) are carbon construction. The approved layup is strong, robust and expected to last well.
AND FINALLY
lighter than the lightest previous hulls. The target weight fully rigged is less than 200kg. Otherwise she is true to the original rules and spirit of the Class. The spacious interior is designed to allow the crew to move easily and buoyancy is positioned centrally to aid speedy recovery and prevent turtling in the event of capsize. The spinnaker chute is in front of the forestay, a mainsheet hoop and updated control systems improve trim adjustment.
The new boats have had a fantastic first season seeing a significant increase in performance and manageability. Speeds of over 15 knots have been clocked in 20 – 25 knots of true wind speed; the view is there is more to come. Since introducing the new Morrison 18 during 2015 it was clear that something special has hit the water. British Olympian Rob White, MD of White Formula, was one of the first to helm her and could not keep the grin off his face: “She is seriously slippery, feels really responsive and accelerates instantly even in the lightest puffs.” She certainly turns heads both in the dinghy park and on the water and the ‘sail away’ package is considered to be exceptional value.

MOVING ON
With the advent of GRP and rising costs of wood construction, Ian Proctor was asked to design a hull in the late 1960s with a brief not to outclass the existing boats. Since then the Class progressively reduced hull weight and optimised spars and sails. A single trapeze was also introduced. These Proctors have served their owners well for many years and the Class actively ensures inclusivity of all design types by racing in divisions or on handicaps recognising the development of the National 18 fleet since its inception. To maintain its National status, the Class is governed by a set of restricted development rules administered by the RYA. The Class rotates its annual National Championships between the participating countries.
The 2015 Championships were hosted by the Irish at the Royal Cork Yacht Club in demanding conditions. The 2016 Championships will be hosted by the Royal Findhorn Yacht Club on the Moray Firth (31 July - 5 August) and in 2017 by Hayling Island Sailing Club (23 – 28 July).
THE NEW HULL
Phil Morrison has designed a hull which is not extreme but, as already mentioned, is sleeker, lighter and faster than the Proctor hulls, with a broad planing stern, fine upwind entry and with all-weather performance. The hull shape is very much in line with modern developments in the other UK restricted classes, of which the N18 is the largest in the family. The hull weight has been reduced to a minimum of 160kg which is some 40kg
White Formula at Brightlingsea, wellknown builders of racing dinghies, is the exclusive builder of the production hulls and foils, and also supplies the carbon spars fitted with a standard package of standing and running rigging. The hull, deck and cockpit are vacuum

LIFEJACKET & LIFERAFT CARE & MAINTENANCE
SAFETY FIRST
IT goes without saying that keeping your onboard safety equipment in working order is of paramount importance so that it will do its job correctly should you need it. For the majority of sailors most safety equipment is for emergencies only, and it is therefore all too easy to overlook the state that it might be in or the fact that a service date has come and gone.
Steve Bocket, Training Manager at Ocean Safety, looks at on board safety equipment maintenance. All AT SeA AUGUST 2012
LIFEJACKET CARE Lifejackets should be serviced annually at a service station approved by the manufacturer. If you are not sure where to go look at the manufacturer’s website or ask in your local chandlery. Servicing is best done out of season when you are not going to need it for a while. Typically a lifejacket is going to get worn in bad weather, while an increasing number of yachtsmen are choosing to wear them all the time. Lifejackets used on a frequent basis should be inspected every three to six months. Even if you are not wearing yours very often, keeping a regular eye on the condition of your lifejacket is also a good way of making sure you are completely familiar with how to use it in a hurry. So lifejackets, whether kept on board for the whole crew or kept in the individual
yachtsman’s kit bag, should always be checked regularly. It is important to visually inspect your lifejacket before putting it on. Make sure there are no tears in the cover, the zip is intact and the webbing straps have not frayed. Check the cylinder is not corroded. To help maintain your lifejackets ensure they are stored in a clean dry area away from direct sunlight. Hang them up rather than chucking them into a locker or an unventilated bag where they will stay damp. If the lifejacket is wet, as can be the case on keelboats or high performance yachts, keep the cover opened when not in use so it can dry naturally. LIFERAFT MAINTENANCE Another safety item that is just as important to maintain, but far less likely to be used, is your liferaft. It is imperative that your liferaft is maintained by an approved service centre. Again, you can check with the manufacturer where to go. Make a note of the next service date in your diary and always make sure you have had it serviced ahead of any major voyages.
MAIN IMAGE: It is worth going to a demonstration day to learn more INSET: An increasing number of yachtsmen are choosing to wear lifejackets all the time
Keeping your liferaft onboard during winterisation is not advised as harsh winter weather can deteriorate the raft. Likewise valise packed liferafts will expand and change shape over the course of a season, so do not assume that just because it went in the locker, it will come out as easily. Many people have never seen their liferaft inflated or seen what is inside their

ROUND THE ISLAND RACE PRINCIPAL RACE OFFICER
MEET THE PRINCIPAL THE date of this year’s edition of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes, is 2 July. Each year tides dictate the start time and on this occasion the first of the 11 starts is later than usual at 08.30. As Principal Race Officer my race day starts with a safety briefing two hours before the first start, so I am sure that I am not alone in appreciating that my alarm clock will not be set much before 0600.
Mike Peskett, Principal Race Officer of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, gives an insight into the build-up to this iconic event and reflects on his longstanding involvement.
RACE REGULAR I have been part of the Round the Island Race Management Team for 30 of the last 31 races, being involved with various aspects of the race including the results team in the late 80s when much more was done by humans compared to today’s electronic contribution. I have been Race Officer on the Outer Distance Mark start-line boat, managed timing at the start, recording at the finish, been on a spotter boat in Sandown Bay and Deputy PRO. This will be the third time that I have held the PRO position. Planning for the event takes place throughout the year with monthly meetings of the ISC Steering Group of which I am Chairman. This team includes
Image: Paul Wyeth/pwpictures 2014
the Safety Officer, a rules expert, a results service representative, the PRO and his deputy, the Club Secretary and the Sailing Secretary together with a long-standing competitor. There is a task-list of more than 180 jobs to be completed each year to ensure the Island Sailing Club is ready for the off. I am a ‘team’ man and enjoy heading up a very experienced team of Race Officers and others, some of whom have been involved almost as long as I have. This team is enhanced on race day with at least 120 willing volunteers (mostly ISC members) who give their time freely and, we know, love being a part of the experience.
WEATHER WATCH Any problems are mainly associated with the weather which, obviously, is the one thing that we have no control over and which changes from year to year. A few days before the day of the race we start to get daily forecasts from an expert local forecaster. The Safety Officer and I start planning to see if we will need to cancel any of the classes. The Racing Rules of Sailing state that ‘it is the boat and the boat alone that shall decide whether to race or not’. However we have a duty of care to our competitors, and although the Solent might look benign enough for a nice day’s sail we will have information about conditions right round the island, particularly along the south side and St Catherine’s Point.
ON THE BOX My most frightening moment was the two-and-a-half minute interview I had with Channel Five news presenter Simon Vigar on our own RTI TV going live around the world on the internet (including to my brother in New Zealand). This new initiative, launched last year, attracted more than 37,000 viewers, some of whom watched the entire four hours of broadcasting. The internet is a wonderful way of communicating the Round the Island Race live to the world. There were more than 1.5 million hits to the official website from January to July 2015. www.roundtheisland.org.uk Do not miss next month’s J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race preview in All at Sea.

YOUNG BOATERS BOAT RESTORATION PROJECT FOR STUDENTS
Building the future
One boat restoration project in particular has proved very successful in encouraging young people to take up sailing and helping them to develop practical life skills.
and self-esteem. The work they complete during the project is included in their individual school portfolios and counts towards their final school grades. At first only a small group of students from the Stanground Academy were involved using the project as the skill section of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Although the boat was purchased to help students complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award other students from the Academy showed an interest and wanted to be involved. This increased participation meant the boat was soon finished. A ceremony was held in June 2014 when Stanground I was launched in front of the students who had worked so hard to restore the boat.
Students have been working on all aspects of the boat project
IT is amazing how projects can develop from a simple chat over a mug of tea. This is exactly what happened when Ali Butler-Baines, Business Development Officer at Grafham Water Centre, met up with Mike Murray, from the Stanground Academy. Following that chat they are now working on the second boat project scheme at Grafham Water Centre.
THE BOAT PROJECT The Grafham Water Centre Boat Project was introduced in 2013 by a local Huntingdonshire Secondary School and has grown into a very worthwhile project for other local schools. The boat restoration project works with students to help them develop practical life skills and gain confidence
STARTING AGAIN The success of the project led to the Academy acquiring a second boat, Stanground II, which is undergoing an extensive refurbishment, again with students carrying out the bulk of the work. As part of the project they have been learning to sail by working their way through the RYA’s Youth Sailing Scheme
qualifications with the ultimate aim of taking the Academy’s boats out on to Grafham Water. Educational Visits Co-originator Mike Murray from the Stanground Academy says: “Having acquired our first boat it quickly became apparent that the students were gaining so much from their involvement. “That is why we have extended the scheme and have purchased a second boat, which has been worked on over the winter and will hopefully be completed by the end of this year. “With two boats we will be able to offer our students the opportunity to learn to sail in our own Wayfarers and also give them the chance to work on maintaining and repairing them over the winter. “It is especially pleasing to see students who do not necessarily excel academically learning to complete different tasks using a wide range of tools and developing a range of practical skills such as problem solving, planning, numeracy and literacy. “You can see the students’ confidence grow week by week, which is having a positive effect when the students are back at the Academy as well.” BUILDING TO SAILING Each week the students work on something different on the boat led by their lead instructor. They may spend one week costing up materials whilst the next may involve learning how to use fibreglass and resin. It is this range of activities that keeps the students interested.
Students enjoy taking the finished boat out on the water
The sessions are detailed and varied, from taking part in woodwork, making new seats to learning the art of fibreglass. Some students have been involved with painting the boat and choosing the school colours. Interest in this project then spills on to learning to sail and understanding more about the sport of sailing in general, which ties in nicely with the six-week sailing programme the school has during the summer months. They have even seen some students attend the boat project, learn to sail through the Academy and then attend RYA On-Board Sailing sessions.

DOUGAL’S DIARY
A MAN OF ACTION THE STORY OF ROBERT ERSKINE CHILDERS BY DAVID HENSHALL
Robert Erskine Childers was inspired by German expansion and sailing to write the influential novel The Riddle of the Sands. His life story, though, makes equally fascinating reading.
Sailor, soldier, diplomat, author and... gun runner
Childers Vixen, aka Dulcibella, would have been very similar to this boat, an old ship’s lifeboat with the sheerline raised by an extra plank. For the early generations of owner/yachtsmen this was the boat to get afloat in! Image: J Coote
WITH the Somme and Jutland looming large, 2016 is set to be a great year for the celebration of centenaries. There is, though, another date being remembered, though with more in the way of mixed feelings. On the 24 April, 1916, Irish Republicans launched the armed insurrection that would become known as the Easter Rising, with the main thrust being to seize the key buildings in Dublin and from there proclaim an independent Irish Republic. Leaving the politics behind the attack to one side, the rebellion brings back into focus the activities of an individual who was famous for another revolution, that of the liberalisation of yachting as an individualist activity. Born in 1870, Robert Erskine Childers was very much an Englishman of what used to be called ‘good birth’, as his father was renowned as an oriental scholar. However, on the early death of his father, the young Childers was sent to grow up at the family home of his mother in County Wicklow, where he quickly associated himself with the cause of a free Ireland. Despite these feelings, Childers still fought for England in both the Boer and First World Wars, earning himself a Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery.
SMALL BOAT CRUISING But it was as an author that Childers had already made his mark, with his subject being at the time dubious pleasures of cruising in a small boat. Following an injury, Childers had started sailing and would soon become a proficient yachtsman. This, though, was a very different sort of sailing to the accepted view of the day, which was one of smart yachts sailed by professional crews. The boat Childers was sailing at the turn of the century was little more than a converted ship’s lifeboat, with the sheerline raised by the addition of an extra plank. Rather than the conventional deep keel, an iron centreplate offered good stability, yet when raised had the ability to float in just a foot or so of water. In such a boat Childers had explored the North Sea coast of Germany, taking in the low-lying Frisian Islands, before venturing further north and east into the Baltic. This gave Childers much food for thought, for he saw a Germany that was growing rapidly and who would soon be challenging the UK for mastery of the North Sea. INSPIRED TO WRITE These two threads, German expansion and short-handed sailing in an area
of shallow, tidal waters, gave him the inspiration for his story the Riddle of the Sands, a book that would become one of the Observer newspaper’s ‘100 greatest novels of all time’. The book tells the story of Davies (Childers himself) and his at first rather foppish friend Carruthers, who was expecting to be sailing on a luxury crewed yacht. But the real star is the boat, the Dulcibella, which was extensively modelled on Childers’ own boat, the Vixen, simply disguised by being renamed for one of Childers’ sisters.
ALL AT SEA MAY 2016
Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating. The adventures of Davies and Carruthers in the myriad maze of creeks and swatchways around the islands make for page turning drama. On a dangerous lee shore, with uncharted sandbanks everywhere, their constant concern was the state of the tide. Indeed the book could have easily been called “If the tide serves”! Riddle of the Sands describes in vivid detail both the travails and pleasures of sailing one’s own boat, albeit one devoid of any of the creature comforts of today. The constant thread of yachting detail was spiced up by the presence of a dastardly traitor, plus the romantic interest of a young lady who liked sailing. Not only was Riddle of the Sands one of the very first books to describe sailing as something that anyone could do; it is also seen as one of the very first spy novel genre, with its exciting flavour of international espionage. The central theme of the book, that the Germans would use the Frisian Islands as a covert base to launch an attack on the lightly defended east coast of England, might have been fiction, but the situation it foretold was real enough. Indeed, the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, would acknowledge the part the book played in his decision to take steps to establish much stronger naval forces in the North Sea. DEATH & LEGACY Despite his writing and his UK military service Childers’ support for the Irish cause went beyond the mere political and become one of action. In July 1914, in his new yacht the Asgard, a 51ft Colin Archer yawl, Childers ran a cargo of Mauser rifles and ammunition, delivering them to the Republican forces at Howth, just north of Dublin. It would be these guns that would arm the Irish forces during the
Easter Rising, with Childers’ role in their provision well known by both sides in the conflict. Even so, in 1921 Childers would go on to play a key part in thrashing out the details of the Treaty that would ultimately lead to the creation of the Irish Republic. Before that could happen a civil war would break out, leaving Childers in a precarious position.
Not only was Riddle of the Sands one of the very first books to describe sailing as something that anyone could do; it is also seen as one of the very first spy novel genre, with its exciting flavour of international espionage In November 1922 he was arrested whilst in possession of a pistol, tried by a Military Tribunal and sentenced to death. Even as his appeal was being prepared Childers was shot by firing squad, an act that Éamon de Valera, who would go on to become the Irish President, would describe as Childers ‘dying the Prince he was’. However, Childers’ death would not be the end of the story, for in time his son, Erskine Hamilton Childers, would go on to become President of Ireland. Childers’ yacht, the Asgard would be restored and become a central exhibit in the National Museum of Ireland, but the Vixen ended up on the hard at Lymington, where it would eventually be broken up. But the enduring story of both boat and writer lives on as one of the great sailing stories of our time.

To ‘crack on’ meant to set more sail and so attain a better speed. The word almost certainly relates to the loud retorts which are heard as the straining sails and sheets are eased. The order ‘crack the sheets’ is to ease them usually because the wind has freed.

ENGINE NEWS
Mercury is rising 115 PRO XS FOUR-STROKE OUTBOARD
Mercury has raised the bar with the launch of the new 115 Pro XS four-stroke outboard. Based on Mercury’s 115 four-stroke, the new outboard is claimed to deliver significantly better performance than any other high-output 115hp outboard on the market. LIGHTER AND FASTER THAN ITS OLDER BROTHER The new 115 Pro XS is said to be more than 8kg lighter than its nearest competitor and over 7kg lighter than the two-stroke Optimax outboard it replaces, which has now been discontinued. Its 2.1L displacement is high for its class and increasing engine rpm from 6000 to 6300 gives the ability to run lower-pitch props which in turn is said to give quicker acceleration than Mercury’s standard 115 four-stroke. Getting up on the plane is improved too reducing 0 to 20mph by one to two seconds on its predecessor. SPEEDY TOO Mercury claim the 115 Pro XS is up to 3mph faster than its nearest competitor and more than 1mph faster than Mercury’s standard 115 four-stroke, which this engine is based on. IDLE THE TIME AWAY There is a new feature that provides up to 48 per cent more battery charging at
idle speed giving you more time out on the water. The engine uses Mercury’s ultra-low copper-content alloys to help prevent corrosion and withstand the elements. WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM The new engines are available to order now through the dealer network and you will be able to inspect them at close quarters shortly - possibly at this year’s Southampton Boat Show. Mercury and Mariner outboards and Yanmar diesel inboard engine are distributed in the UK by E. P. Barrus Ltd, a British company founded in 1917 by Ernest Prouty Barrus. Soon to be 100 years old, the company has a strong engineering focus and has developed partnerships with major international companies. Barrus custom build products for the Ministry of Defence, RNLI and H.M. Coastguard. Look out for further engine up-dates in future issues of All at Sea.

t s e b s Dartmouth bite 39
ALL AT SEA MAY 2016
Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.
This month we head to Dartmouth to discover what tasty treats await.
beautiful , e n li t s a o c g Stunnin y to do, t n le p d n a e id countrys he perfect t is n o v e D h t Sou destination.
DARTMOUTH has quite a history producing Naval Officers since 1863, inventing the first steam pumping engine in 1712 and waving a tearful farewell to the Mayflower and Speedwell in 1612, as they left Bayard’s Cove to head to the New World. Now this desirable town, on the steeply wooded slopes of the River Dart, is a sheltered haven for seafarers and not a bad place to go shopping – with over 12 galleries and chef Mitch Tonks – or live. It is buzzing with activity and brave new builds sit cheekily alongside fishermen’s cottages and merchants’ villas. Right, the sun is shining and it is time to hit the streets…
BREAKFAST
It has to be Alf Resco on Lower Street, but be prepared to wait (though not for long) as this place seems popular with all from young officers to gentlemen, families, hikers and visiting yachtsmen. There is a great menu with fine attention to detail and covers healthy smoothies to a fry up. I like that a whole page is committed to different types of hot chocolate and the choice of toppings on the porridge, including Chia seeds and nut butter. These guys also have rooms available upstairs and the top floor apartment has wonderful views over the Dart from its crow’s nest balcony. It is open from 7am, but shuts at 2pm so get there on time, but perhaps avoid the first door rush. www.cafealfresco.co.uk
For lunch try Rockfish takeout, South Street Deli or, if you are lucky, a mug of Mark Lobb’s creamy seafood chowder in the Old Market Square, where he has a wet fish stall (9am-14.30 Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday). www.wildfooddevon.co.uk

FANCY A TIPPLE? Cocktails: Bellinis, open on Friday and Saturday 5pm -1.30am. A favourite haunt of Ribeye.
BEST PUB IN TOWN? Try Windjammer on Victoria Road, run by Andy Coombe, with its own commercial fishing boat. The Teign mussels are always worth trying and the beer is well kept. BEST PUB UP RIVER? Maltsters Arms, tucked into the inlet at aptly named Tuckenhay with a small pontoon outside. Once owned by the immaculate Keith Floyd it is always worth a visit, but ring ahead if arriving by boat to see if there is room to tie up outside. 01803 732350
LUNCH
Head to Wood Roast, the second string to Italian owned outfit in Totnes, who also run the Curator Kitchen. They are passionate about their beans, which are roasted over in Italy, along with the biscotti that the owner’s brother makes in Ancona. It is a family affair. I had the day’s special, Congo, and loved it. It is a convivial, small space, but if full get a take-out and buy some beans for the boat. Tel: 01803 832155 Conveniently positioned opposite Wood Roast is Smith Street Deli, another great spot to grab a quick bruschetta, buy some wonderful olive oil and tapas, read the papers and catch up with emails - wifi is good here. www.smithstreetdeli.co.uk My sources all said you have to go to Saveurs, the French Patisserie on Victoria Road. It really is what it says on the tin, a proper patisserie with an impressive array
monkfish and king prawn Malabar Curry with handmade cumin naan bread. It is only open in the evenings, whereas the Seahorse does a good lunch slot and I like the locals’ set menu for £20. www.seahorserestaurant.co.uk
of breads, pastries and chocolate work. You could be in France or watching Bake Off’s La Crème de la Crème. I bought a big boule of sour dough and took a pain au raison to go with my Wood Roast take-out. It was a joy to sit in the sun by the hyacinths and early opening magnolias, overlooking the misty Dart. www.saveurs.co.uk However I would also give the Almond Thief bakers available in Dart Deli a punt as their bread looked a proper job to me and they are a small outfit baking out of Dartington.
Dart Marina Hotel is a fabulous spot opposite the Higher Car Ferry and has cleverly combined a modern, luxurious hotel with the marina, spa facilities and some lovely colour washed flats (there was a two-bed available for £775k), all enjoying that ever changing view over the river. The restaurant shares the lovely views that the rooms enjoy, and I like the attention to detail with blankets and binoculars set up on your balcony. I have heard about their three cream tea options – fizz, Hendricks or tea. What, I hear you cry, tea? When you could have Hendricks? Why not be sensible and have both as the delightful mix of sandwiches, scones, cakes, desserts and handmade chocolates are not to be rushed. The Hendricks teapot arrives, beautifully painted and chinking with ice cubes. I pour my first cup with cucumber slices and a scattering of peppercorns at the base and lean back and enjoy the ice cold, fresh green scent of it – what a delight. Overlooking one of South Hams prettiest rivers in the distance and a tea tray of artistic reflectiveness in the foreground. I like this place. www.dartmarinahotel.co.uk

THE HIKE: An easy walk along the river to Dartmouth Castle, through some delightful coloured merchants’ houses, past Baynards Cove, original departure point for the Mayflower, to join the South West Coastal Path out to the castle itself, where you will find Dartmouth Castle Tea Rooms. You can be fortified here with fresh baked cakes, darned good sausage rolls and a cuppa. www. dartmouthcastletearooms.co.uk Before heading back, or if fatigued, take the ferry option. The ferries make this whole area a walker and cyclist’s dream as you can cover some beautiful distances without covering the same area. This walk can be extended to a 6km circular trek, well marked as the Diamond Jubilee Way. www.devon.gov.uk/ diamondjubileeway www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk www.dartharbour.org

MARINA CHAT
NortherN Delights MEETING BOATERS AROUND THE UK’S MARINAS
Reg and Linda Mathews are making the most of their retirement, spending many months of the year sailing around northern Europe on board their beloved Rivulet. WE are the proud owners of Rivulet, a single-masted sloop that we have had for almost 25 years. Linda and I are very attached to our boat and have sailed well over 30,000 miles on her. I have been sailing for around 40 years after starting as a child at boarding school in Germany. I continued throughout my adult life, but since we retired we have been lucky enough to spend even more time at sea. As we live in London we have kept Rivulet in a variety of marinas over the years.
Port Le Foret, a marina near Concarneau on the west coast. We loved it there and the manager persuaded us to stay. It was easy enough to get there on the ferry with our car and we both speak a workable level of French. It did mean that we both needed to take a long weekend if we wanted to go sailing though. BACK iN BritAiN Berthing back in the UK we were at Sparkes Marina for many years, and on one of our trips to Spain we stopped at MDL’s Queen Anne’s Battery Marina in Plymouth and fell in love with the place: the history, the Barbican and the town. There is so much to explore on land and on the water that it has kept our interest for many years and it is a great base to explore the rest of northern Europe. It was at Queen Anne’s Battery that we were introduced to MDL’s Freedom Berthing. Now we are both retired we tend to go away for five or six months of the year cruising around northern Europe. It is fantastic that we have access to over 100 marinas across the UK and Europe. NortherN eUroPe Sailing around northern Europe is our passion. Some of our most memorable voyages have included the Wadden Zee, the Freisian Islands and a three week stay in Boyardville on the Isle d’Oleron where we were invited by friends to study the oyster culture. All of this adventuring can sometimes take its toll on our 43-year-old Rivulet. There can even be times when it takes its toll on us too when your 40ft mast is lost in a trough in Biscay. Luckily the team at Queen Anne’s Battery looks after Rivulet and us very well. The yard crew, headed up by Graham

Reg and Linda love sailing around northern Europe but they love coming back to the UK too
Turner, is a great bunch and really do a fantastic job. When a boat gets to 43-years-old she does need a bit of looking after and there is a chandlery for her and restaurants for us, which is perfect. Queen Anne’s Battery Marina 01752 671142 mdlmarinas.co.uk/mdl-queen-annes-battery
ANNIVERSARY WICORMARINE YACHT HAVEN AT 50
A year to remember
WicorMarine Yacht Haven is celebrating its 50th year as a family business and has been associated with several well known names from the world of boating.
1966 might be remembered by most for sporting reasons, but it also saw the beginnings of WicorMarine Yacht Haven. Situated in a surprisingly tranquil reach halfway up Portsmouth’s busy harbour, WicorMarine Yacht Haven is a charming, sheltered spot and a gentle step back in time for the visiting yachtsman. Initially set up and run by Chris and Ruth Waddington, it has a fascinating history. Described by Chris as “depressing,
smelly and neglected… it was such a challenge we had to go with it.” Previously known as Felthams Boatyard they bought it for £12,000 in 1966 and it was christened WicorMarine after the nearby village. The couple immediately started rebuilding and renovating. Intensive works carried on into 1967 with diggers clearing the site and building the new jetty pilings. The

jetty provides walk ashore berthing for larger vessels including Dutch barges, houseboats and fishing vessels. There were 19 original moorings with big steel admiralty buoys, which the Harbour Master agreed the yard could have. Another challenge was a suitable vessel for checking and laying new moorings. A Winkle Barge, which used to carry shellfish up the Thames, was found at Tuffs
of Teddington and delivered to Portsmouth. A roller and winch were installed on the foredeck and the barge pushed around by the Wicor launch. Bit by bit other facilities were acquired, donated or ingeniously recycled. ExAdmiralty fenders became the dinghy storage pontoons, the old Gosport ferry pontoon was commandeered in 1984 to increase capacity and later a mooring barge adapted from a Macwester 34 mould. It was a DIY yard, with sail makers and boat builders who set up their businesses on site. However, Chris soon realised he needed a small team of trusted tradesmen. Between them, David Palmer, shipwright, and Tony Dugdale, engineer, they clocked up more than 60 years service with the yard. sir ChAY BlYth Around this time Chris was introduced to Chay Blyth, the first person to sail singlehanded non-stop westwards around the world. He became a close family friend. Having completed his Atlantic Row, Blyth was preparing for the Golden Globe and wanted to sail in some privacy. Chris provided him with a base for his operations and remembers sitting in the local Seagull pub discussing how the yacht British Steel should be built for Blyth’s wrong way round circumnavigation. Subsequently a number of Blyth’s boats came to the yard and his trimaran Great Britain III was built there. As a result WicorMarine developed a reputation with other long distance sailors too.
PAssioN For ClAssiCs As the yard got sorted Chris was able to engage in his own passion, classic yachts, restoring a Colin Archer 32’ made from oak on pine called Saari, eventually selling her to Tom Cunliffe. Other classic restorations followed including Moya a 43ft built on Morecambe Bay Prawner lines and Sorella, a 28ft Itchen Ferry built in 1858. The strong association with classic boats is a tradition carried on by Chris’s son Scott and wife Imogen who run the yard today. Since Scott took over in 2003, the facilities have steadily developed without losing any of its original charm. Chris’s original ethos to provide customers with a complete boat service in a haven of peace without paying over the odds remains very much in place. A new Sublift and telehander offer upgraded launching facilities. In 2012 a number of swinging moorings were replaced with deep-water pontoons, a short row from the jetty, suitable for yachts up to 20m LOA. A well stocked chandlery, tool hire service and most recently the Salt Café have been added. Activities marking WicorMarine Yacht Haven’s 50th year as a family business will take place throughout 2016. A celebration event for Wicor’s extended family of friends and past and present customers takes place on 4 June. www.wicormarine.co.uk See more pictures of WicorMarine Yacht Haven over the past 50 years at www.allatsea.co.uk.

FAMBRIDGE YACHT HAVEN Fambridge Yacht Haven Church Road, North Fambridge Chelmsford, Essex, CM3 6LR 01621 740370 fambridge@yachthavens.com www.yachthavens.com/fambridge
Nestled within a peaceful and pretty village in Essex, Fambridge Yacht Haven is less than an hour from London and boasts an impressive range of facilities. It is not hard to see why this marina is commonly referred to as ‘the jewel of the River Crouch’. PART of the multi-award winning Yacht Havens Group, Fambridge offers all the charm, warmth and personal service of a family owned marina whilst delivering a wealth of valuable services. This unique combination is what makes Fambridge a clear choice for its devoted berth holders and returning visitors. This marina certainly ticks all the boxes when it comes to fantastic facilities: 120 deep water swinging moorings, a 120m visitors’ pontoon and the hugely popular valet berthing service – allowing berth holders to ‘step on board and go’. Alongside
Racing on the River Crouch
this are all of the comforting and practical conveniences that Yacht Havens customers have come to expect as standard: excellent security, on-water diesel and petrol, free showers and parking, free Wi-Fi and unrivaled customer service and friendly atmosphere – synonymous with Yacht Havens. To top it all, Fambridge berth holders enjoy 14 days free berthing at Yacht Havens’ six other marinas including UK Marina of the Year 2016, Lymington Yacht Haven. Plus they receive 50 per cent discounted visitors’ mooring for five consecutive days at over 70 marinas around the UK and Europe.
ACCESS
Fambridge is only 30 minutes from the M25, making it one of the closest marinas to London. From the M25 take the A12 towards Chelmsford, the A130 towards South Woodham Ferrers and follow signs to Burnham On Crouch. Fambridge Yacht Haven is roughly half way between South Woodham and Burnham. Approaches and navigational info: Fambridge Yacht Haven is located at North Fambridge on the north bank of the River Crouch approximately 6nm upriver of Burnham-On-Crouch (Posn: 51deg 38.55’ N, 0 deg 39.9’E). The marina is set within Stow Creek where access can be gained at all states of the tide depending on vessel draft. Approaching from seaward, pass through Burnham Fairway on the south (port) bank of the river and pass Essex Marina and the commercial Baltic Wharf at Wallasea Island also on your port side. The river is wide and deep right up to North Fambridge, but keep clear of Bridgemarsh Island, a very large area of flooded marshland on the north (starboard) side of the main river channel, which can be entirely
submerged on very high tides. Approaching North Fambridge you will see Fambridge Yacht Havens’ ‘Yacht Station’. You will see mid-river moorings ahead of you, 120m visitors’ pontoon on your starboard side and South Fambridge on your port side. If approaching at night, the 120m visitors’ pontoon is easily seen with two single, green flashing navigation lights - one at either end (FL(3)G.4s). Pass the swinging moorings (keeping towards the south side of the river as traffic can be busy around the visitors’ pontoon on the north side) and continue upriver for another half-mile where you will see a single special mark known as ‘Stow Post’ in the mouth of Stow Creek on your starboard side. At night, Stow Post is lit with a single flashing yellow light (QF(4)Y.8s). Enter the creek leaving Stow Post to port and keep within the buoyed channel leading towards the marina on the starboard side. The River Crouch and approaches are well marked with lit channel markers as far as Baltic Wharf, Wallasea Island. Upriver of Baltic Wharf is not lit for approximately 5nm until you reach the visitors’ pontoon and Stow Post.

EXPLORING AFLOAT
Essex has 350 miles of coastline and the longest shoreline of any county in England. Diverse with rich wildlife, natural saltings and farmland, tidal inlets and no less than 35 islands, there are plenty of hidden treasures to explore. Best known for its popular resorts like Southend-on-Sea, you will also be pleasantly surprised by its mudflats, saltmarshes and creeks. Head for Mersea Island and enjoy its simple gifts of dramatic wide skies and estuary views and a feast of fresh native oysters. Cut off at high spring tide and just eight miles square, Mersea deserves some careful planning but is well worth a visit. Osea Island, on the Blackwater Estuary, is simply enchanting. With 400 acres of stunning countryside and four miles of beaches and coastline, the island is rich with history and natural beauty. Osea is only accessible every seven hours due to the tides. A stone’s throw from Southendon-Sea, Foulness is the largest of the Essex islands. Tidal creeks, vast, flat and isolated marshland and a haven for wildlife, Foulness is open to the public for just six days a year – making it an unspoiled paradise.
A stunning location less than an hour from London
“We are now in our fifth season at Fambridge and I cannot see us ever leaving. Fantastic facilities, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere in a lovely location.” Berth Holder, Bru Peckett
EXPLORING ASHORE
North Fambridge is a peaceful, friendly and pretty village. A mere 30 miles from London, with incredibly easy access by road and rail, it is a popular destination to escape the city and enjoy the relaxation of your boat in less than an hour. There is plenty to keep you occupied both on and off shore. Within the village, adjacent to the entrance to Fambridge Yacht Haven, you will find the famous Ferry Boat Inn, an excellent pub serving great food, freshly prepared onsite and cooked to order (www. ferryboatinn.net). Tuck into the FBI Ploughmans with smoked applewood stilton and honey roast ham.
If you have a day to spare, the popular port of Maldon is steeped in maritime history and a must-see for boating enthusiasts. The famous, historic sailing town of Burnham-On-Crouch is only 15 minutes away on the train, or a pleasant three to four hour walk along the level sea wall from Fambridge Yacht Haven. Here you will find a good choice of yacht clubs and a selection of well stocked chandleries. It is also a great place to stock up on general stores from one of its many shops and supermarkets. South Woodham Ferrers is one stop away on the train heading towards London. Families will enjoy Marsh Farm Animal Adventure Park where children can get close to farm animals and play safely in one of their adventure play areas. There is also a Country Park which boasts excellent coastal walks and superb views of the River Crouch. Following the success of the inaugural River Festival in 2015, the event is returning on Sunday 5 June. Held at the Yacht Station at Fambridge Yacht Haven, it is an action-packed day with a wide range of sail and classic boats, sailing and gig races, workshops and clinics, live music food, drink and plenty of family fun.

NEW H39 CRUISER-RACER FITTING OUT AT FOX’S FOX’S Marina & Boatyard has been chosen to complete the first H39, a new 39ft IRC Cruiser-Racer from the Humphreys Yacht Design office in Lymington. The first of these new designs is at the Fox’s yard now and is due to launch in late May. The new H39 marks a return to the dual purpose cruiser-racer and features include a berth for every crew member;
a proper cockpit; seamanlike galley with an oven and fridge; a permanently fitted saloon table and, going forward, the yacht has an enclosed WC with a hot and cold shower. The composite hull structure was built by a specialist contractor and work carried out by the team at Fox’s will include: fitting the keel, rudders and all deck gear; engine installation;
HAVENGORE GETS FIT FOR THE QUEEN IN 1965, watched live by a worldwide audience of 350 million, the historic Thames River cruiser, Havengore, took centre stage during the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill. In 2012, Havengore carried members of the royal family as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in a flotilla of over a thousand vessels during the River Thames pageant and in June this year Havengore will take part in HM Queen’s
90th birthday celebrations. Havengore, whose home port is at St Katharine Docks in London, is currently at Fox’s where work is in progress on her annual maintenance and refit and her owner, Chris Ryland, is keen to make her available for local people to view whilst she is in Suffolk. Anyone who would like to come and see the vessel ashore is welcome to do so during the Fox’s Open Weekend, which runs from Friday 13 to
fairing and painting the hull; complete electrical installation and fitting out of the yacht’s interior. Fox’s Stainless has fabricated all the custom fittings and Fox’s Rigging will be making both the standing and running rigging. Designed to be competitive under the IRC handicap rule, the yacht is expected to participate in both the UK and European IRC Championships this season.
Sunday 15 May, 1000-1600 daily. Fox’s Open Weekend incorporates the annual Oyster Brokerage Spring Boat Show and the Fox’s Yacht Sales New and Used Boat Show with over 50 new and used yachts to view as well as demonstrations and exhibits from Raymarine, Dolphin Sails, Ocean Safety and other marine suppliers so there will be plenty to see. COBBS QUAY TEAM CYCLE FOR PROSTATE CANCER CHARITY STAFF and customers from MDL’s Cobb’s Quay Marina in Poole cycled a fantastic 91 miles and raised £168 for Prostate Cancer UK last week as part of an initiative across its 18 marina locations, which will see them cycle the entire route of its UK marina network and back again. MDL Marinas created the initiative in support of Mike Glanville, MDL’s Group Head of Operations, who has undertaken two charitable runs todate following the loss of one of his best friends to Prostate Cancer. Mike is currently in training for his third and biggest run – the Virgin London Marathon on 24th April. The MDL Marinas team decided that whilst Mike puts on his running shoes and pounds miles and miles of
pavement, they would all support him by cycling the whopping 1,634 miles (the length of its marina network and back again) in an effort to raise an additional £1,634 for Prostate Cancer UK – a target that the team have already smashed! To conquer the challenge, MDL’s static bike will be making a grand tour of its 18 UK marinas, where team members and customers have been challenged to hop on the bike and cycle to raise funds for such a worthy cause. To donate towards this worthy cause please visit www.justgiving. com/Mike-G-Marathon For more information about MDL Marinas, visit www.mdlmarinas.co.uk

THE Masterclass
PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
BOATING ABROAD
If the typical UK Bank Holiday weather has whetted your appetite for stretching your sea legs further afield, are you confident you are up-to-date on the laws, rules and regulations for boating abroad?
SPOT CHECKS
When taking a UK boat to any other country you need the right papers for the boat and the crew. These are the minimum you should be able to produce if requested: Ship’s Papers ■ Registration documentation ■ Ship Radio Licence ■ Evidence of the boat’s VAT status ■ Insurance documents ■ Evidence the vessel is RCD compliant (e.g. CE Mark) / exempt
WHEREVER you want to go there could be factors, local or otherwise, that could leave you in a spot of bother if you do not do your homework beforehand.
Personal papers ■ Passport ■ Authority to operate maritime radio (e.g. SRC) ■ Evidence of competence (e.g. ICC) ■ European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) Original documents should be carried, particularly the registration
document, as you could be fined, most notably in France, for only having a copy. The need for evidence of the VAT status of the boat comes as a surprise to many people. Many owners, and particularly owners of older boats, simply do not have historical paperwork for the boat and are not able to produce evidence that the VAT was paid on the purchase of the boat when it was due.
In recent years Portugal (or more specifically the region of Portugal which comes under the jurisdiction of the Faro customs authority) has been gaining a reputation for spot checks on the VAT status of the boat. Owners receive an email or a letter that notifies them that they must present their registration document, evidence of the VAT status of the boat and a T2L to the Faro customs authority within 30 days. A T2L document is not normally issued to boats sold new within the EU. It is designed to establish the community status of goods but it can be issued retrospectively by HMRC. A completed C88 (Part 4 or status) form validated by HMRC provides evidence that the boat it relates to is of EU origin and thus establishes its status for customs purposes. RYA Members can email T2L@rya. org.uk with their name, membership number and postal address and will be sent a pack that explains all. Otherwise contact the HM Revenue and Customs National Advice Line on 0300 200 3700.
BE PREPARED
The majority of EU countries seldom conduct checks and most boat owners report that they have never had their VAT paperwork checked. Going abroad without evidence of the VAT status of your boat is unlikely to cause you a problem whilst you are cruising in the EU, but you should be aware that it could. Similarly you should be aware that returning from a country outside the EU without that evidence has the potential to be expensive. More information can be found at www.rya.org.uk/go/boatingabroad with country-specific information available to RYA members. Members can also email cruising@rya.org.uk for up-to-date advice. More detailed advice is also available to RYA Members. Always check the latest information with the authorities of the country in question too. Happy cruising – and do not let rules and regulations scupper your plans! Go to the RYA pages at www.allatsea. co.uk to read the complete article with more information about VAT status.

CAMPAIGN SUPPORTER One supporter of the campaign is Bruichladdich (pronounced brook laddy), the only malt whisky to be distilled, matured and bottled
on the Isle of Islay. Bruichladdich’s biggest seller is the Classic Laddie (unpeated). The distillery’s mantra is ‘terroir matters as much for whisky as it does for wine’. That is the barley source, the distillery location, the maturation climate, the type of barrels and the age and range of matured malts in the recipe. A letter from CEO Simon Coughlin to www. scotchwhisky.com/magazine says: “Recognising the restrictions imposed on us by current legislation, the information provided on the Classic Laddie bottle, packaging and advertising is not going to change. We are not going to publish (blend) information in a form that can be accessed by a casual visitor to our website. The information will only be available in response to a request from a third party who has access to the batch codes i.e. typically someone who owns a bottle of Classic Laddie which carries the batch code. “When a batch code is entered into the proffered field on the product page of our website, www. bruichladdich.com, the enquirer will be provided with the recipe pertinent to that vatting. We have no intention of publishing the batch numbers anywhere other than on the bottles.” Classic Laddie is not sold in supermarkets so the best way to buy is online via www. thewhiskyexchage.com or www.masterofmalt.com. Expect to pay about £43 for a 70cl bottle at 50 per cent abv. Tasting notes: barley, a hint of mint, wild flowers and green fruit. Best enjoyed in good company, brings warmth to the heart and soul. Sounds like our sort of drink!

COMPETITION TERMS AND CONDITIONS
WE are used to being bombarded with government advice and explicit product content labelling intended to help us make informed choices on food and soft drinks. But would you like to know exactly which malts from which distilleries, what age each is and in what proportion it is in the particular whisky recipe? THE ANSWERS Compass Box, an independent high value (means expensive) specialist whisky maker, wanted to
reveal just that for one of its brands to inform and encourage potential consumers. Unfortunately the Scotch Whisky Association, guardian of the integrity of the Scotch industry, stepped in to declare that full disclosure did not comply with the current EU law. In effect an ‘appellation d’origine contrôllée’ for Scotch whisky, and the initiative had to cease. But a campaign for change has begun. John Glaser of Compass Box said: “Scotch whisky is one of the few products where it is prohibited by law to be fully open with consumers, limiting the ability of the producer to share pertinent information with their customers.” Odd, eh? He is campaigning for change to give Scotch producers the “freedom but not the obligation” to publish the age of all components included in their whiskies. The art of blending is both the key to continuity of taste and style of established brands and to creativity, finding new combinations to produce ‘new’ products. You can see why a small craft brand would find it useful to extol the recipe to its potential customers and why the big, high-volume brands would find it a logistical nightmare.

When all other food producers are obliged to reveal exactly what is in their products, the opposite is true for whisky. There is a move afoot to change this.
