INCREASED NUMBERS TAKING TO THE WATER FROM THE COVER… There is good news for the marine industry with watersports participation approaching pre-recession highs as more people are getting afloat. According to the Watersports Participation Survey, 3.5 million people (6.7 per cent of UK adults) participated in one or more of 12 core boating activities, such as yacht racing, powerboating and water-skiing in 2016, the highest volume recorded since 2009. A further 668,828 (1.3 per cent of UK adults) took part in growing watersport activities like stand up paddleboarding and kitesurfing. This is a rise of approximately 95,000 participants. The research also found a substantial increase in the number of younger people (aged 16 - 34) classed as boating ‘enthusiasts’. Howard Pridding, Chief Executive Officer at British Marine, said: “It is great to see young people being inspired by boating and watersports and taking up opportunities to get out on the water throughout the year. Whether it is the ever-growing enthusiasm for stand up paddleboarding or the continually popular sport of canoeing, these activities are proving an enticing way to get more people exploring the world of boating. “We are confident that many people will continue to turn to the array of boating and watersports pastimes right on their doorstep as a great way to keep active and have fun with their family and friends.

“We already see more UK adults participating in watersports activities at home, here in Britain, than we do abroad, and in the last year alone we have seen a significant shift in the majority of waterskiers and users of personal watercraft choosing to participate in the UK rather than overseas.”

LUXURY PARTNERS

Bentley Motorsport has signed a three-year sponsorship deal with Princess Yachts, which will see the brands partner together in motorsport activities around the world. The partnership will include joint activities that bring the worlds of luxury yachts and motor racing together.

FOOTBALLER HERO

Former England footballer James Beattie rescued two children and their mother from a stricken yacht in Dorset. The boat had collided with a ferry at Poole Harbour when James, with other ferry passengers, leapt over a barrier of the chain ferry to assist the family. It was reported that the yacht got its lines caught up in the workings of the ferry.

SHOW WINNERS

British Marine Boat Shows, organisers of the Southampton and London Boat Show, were named Best Operations Team 2017 at the Exhibition News Awards. Both shows bring logistical complexities, including the building of Europe’s largest purpose-built marina at Southampton and the intricate moving of large yachts at London.

RYA PUSHES THE BOAT OUT MORE than 370 sailing venues across the UK will be giving people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to get out on the water and discover a new sport this May with RYA Push the Boat Out. The nationwide event returns from 13 - 21 May and will see thousands of people having a go at sailing and windsurfing at free and low cost taster sessions across the UK. showcasing what the sport has to offer, from the freedom of being on the water to the social buzz, the thrill of racing and the fact that there really is something for everyone.” “Sailing is such an accessible sport and many people are not aware of the opportunities available close to them or how affordable the sport can be, even for the whole family. “Push the Boat Out is all about making that connection and we are delighted to have so many venues taking part this year.”

Saskia Clark, Rio 2016 Gold medallist, said: “I got into sailing through my local sailing club so it is fantastic to see so many people given the opportunity to discover what the sport is all about right on their doorstep. “If you want to inspire your non-sailing friends and family to giving sailing and windsurfing a go, make sure you put Push the Boat Out in the diary.” Turn to page 39 to read more about RYA Push the Boat Out. www.rya.org.uk/go/PTBO

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde

It is great news that watersports participation is approaching prerecession highs, especially as there has been a big increase in younger people getting involved. The future of boating and watersports in general is looking very good indeed. No doubt events like the RYA’s annual Push the Boat Out have helped spread the word and encouraged people to have a go at sports they would never otherwise have tried. Have sporting superstars like Sir Ben Ainslie does not hurt either. He has been an inspiration to young and old sailors alike. There is no denying that Ben Ainslie is one of the greatest sailors this country has ever produced, but will he and the Land Rover BAR team be able to do the seemingly impossible and become the first British winner of the America’s Cup? This month we will be one step closer to finding out as the Qualifiers kick off towards the end of May. Not only do we have a special four-page preview to this highly anticipated event, but we have a fascinating profile of Sir Ben. Turn to page 22 to find out more about the man behind Land Rover BAR. If you are not lucky enough to be in Bermuda for the America’s Cup, the All at Sea website and Facebook page will be bringing you all the news and up-dates as they happen.

With all eyes on the America’s Cup and the incredible foiling catamarans, it seems a good time to look back at the development of these boats. Who better to do this than David Henshall. Turn to page 32 to read David’s fascinating article. Although the America’s Cup will be big news for the next couple of months there are many other great events far closer to home. Our special events guide will take you right through the summer from town regattas to the annual favourites including Cowes Week and Round The Island Race. We are constantly up-dating our online events guide, and so if you know of an event you would like to see featured simply send us an email. Have you booked your summer sailing holiday yet? I have spotted some great last minute deals and cancellation offers, and so if you have not got anything booked yet it is well worth getting in touch with holiday companies and asking what deals they can offer. If you are not set on a particular destination this can be a very good way to save money, giving you more spends when you are away! If you are planning to skip the busy summer period do not miss next month when we look at autumn boating holiday destinations. Send us your top tips for great sailing trips too. With two Bank Holidays and – hopefully - plenty of sunshine there really is no excuse for not getting out on the water this month. Enjoy your spring sailing and join us in getting behind Sir Ben and his team as they seek to #BringTheCupHome. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

ALEX STRIKES GOLD WITH SKYWALK STUNT

ALEX Thomson Racing has won gold for the Skywalk Campaign in the sport category at the inaugural London Brand Film Festival awards. The campaigned, released in 2016, was the third in the trilogy of Alex’s stunts and reached a huge online audience. The death defying stunt saw Alex kitesurf over the top of his IMOCA open 60 boat, HUGO BOSS, reaching a height equivalent to a 25 story building and landing his kiteboard back in the water, all whilst wearing a HUGO BOSS suit. The Skywalk was HUGO BOSS’s most successful sports campaign ever in terms of reach, and was watched by millions worldwide. The campaign followed on from the success of Thomson’s previous stunts. The Keel Walk in 2012 saw Alex walk along the keel of his racing yacht whilst heeled over and sailing at high speed, and the Mast Walk in 2014 showed the skipper climbing the 30m mast of HUGO BOSS and dive from the top into the water. This is the second award the British racing team has won for these creative campaigns, with Alex taking home the title at the BT Sports Industry Awards for the Mast Walk. Alex finished second in the Vendée Globe earlier this year. Watch the Skywalk video at the All at Sea Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ allatseanewspaper

TECH SUPPORT FOR BEN

Image: Lloyd Images

THIS month Bermuda will be playing host to the 35th America’s Cup, where the British challenger, Land Rover BAR, will be competing to bring the cup home to Britain. A tactical app that will act as a virtual ‘seventh crew member’ to help Ben Ainslie’s team gain a competitive edge has been revealed. BT and Coderus needed to develop an app for use on mobile and wearable tech which could intuitively show critical information throughout the race, with no user interaction, allowing the team to make swift tactical decisions and giving them maximum time for manoeuvring. The app can tell the team exactly when to power up so that they cross the start line at the second the race begins, gaining a critical advantage from the very beginning by getting the team in front at Mark 1. The leader at this point is expected to win up to 80 per cent of the races. The app will be used in a competitive race for the first time on the 26 May as part of the America’s Cup Finals.

Sailing team tactician and Olympic gold medallist Giles Scott said: “We were desperate for an app which could act as a virtual seventh crew member and become central to our decision making process during the race, providing Ben and I with the data that we really need to gain a competitive advantage.” Even if you are not heading to Bermuda, you can show your support for the team using social media and by wearing the Land Rover BAR kit. As official technical clothing supplier, Henri Lloyd’s Race to Bermuda and Land Rover BAR Replica collections, created with the team, use technical advancements in sailing clothing and bring a sleeker look to the team kit. Henri Lloyd has been working alongside a dedicated panel from Land Rover BAR since the start of their partnership on the development of this bespoke range of replica products. From the casual navy raglan t-shirt to official sponsor and graphic printed accessories, there is a huge range to choose from. CLIPPER RACE SAFETY REVIEW

THE UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch has published its final report into two fatal accidents in the 2015-16 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the first in the event’s 20 year history. The report recommended that the Clipper Race should review and modify its on board manning policy and shore-based management procedures so that yacht skippers are effectively supported and, where appropriate, challenged to ensure that safe working practices are maintained continuously on board. The report highlights that the first fatality, Andrew Ashman, was a direct consequence of the sailor entering the cockpit danger zone, where he was struck by the mainsheet on the boom when the boat gybed. Andrew, an experienced sailor who had completed the Clipper Race’s mandatory four part, four week intensive training, stepped over the main sheet traveller, a high obstruction in the danger zone between two prominent winches, when he was hit by the mainsheet on the boom. Images: OnEdition

He sustained a high impact neck injury that is believed to have killed him instantly. This is a high-risk area taught to the crew during training because of the danger of being hit by the boom. The second fatality, Sarah Young, was the consequence of not clipping on when on deck, which is mandatory on Clipper Race yachts, and subsequently Sarah was washed overboard in adverse weather. Sarah had been on deck at night during a storm with wind speeds over 40 knots, gusting over 60 knots, following the reduction of sail area to respond to the adverse conditions. A wave broke over the deck causing her to lose her footing ending up next to the guardrail, when a second wave washed her overboard as she was not connected to the boat by her safety tether. The conditions were horrendous and by the time Sarah was located via her AIS beacon and recovered from the heavy seas she had sadly perished. The reasons why these sailors failed to follow their basic training in these incidents will remain unknown

and theories are purely speculative. The publication of the MAIB report has been welcomed by Clipper Race Founder and Chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who said: “The MAIB has an important role in ensuring that the valuable learnings from accidents are shared with the industry to help improve safety. “These two fatalities, resulting from two very different incidents, were the first in our long history and are tragic, especially as they were caused primarily through momentary lapses in applying basic safety training.” “We have developed our current manning levels and qualifications in conjunction with the MCA, operating to MCA standards as a minimum and often well in excess. We frequently implement and develop safety procedures where there is no actual requirement; they are under constant review as a matter of course and we will continue to do so in light of the report’s recommendations.” The Clipper Race has worked closely with the MCA for many years in developing its safety standards and procedures. A minimum of at least one crew member per team is trained to qualify for a Clipper Race Coxswain Certificate, developed with, and approved by, the MCA, to support the skipper and take over in the event that they are incapacitated. The eleventh edition of the Clipper Race will start from the UK in August and return in late July 2018. THE Round the Island Race in association with Cloudy Bay is a one-day annual yachting extravaganza with upwards of 1,500 yachts and 12,000 sailors competing. The race is organised by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes and circumnavigates

the 50nm course westabouts around the beautiful coastline of the Isle of Wight. The day delivers everything you expect from a top quality sporting event: exceptional race management, competition, challenge, tactics, fun, excitement, beautiful scenery and the ability for family and friends to track your progress. As a competitor you are part of an iconic and unique sailing experience that embraces sailors of all abilities as well as spanning a huge age range.

With Cloudy Bay announced as the Presenting Sponsor, the race includes amongst its entries the Farr 52 Bob, entered by Cloudy Bay and skippered by Stephen Durkin. Amongst the crew this year is Cloudy Bay Brand Ambassador Ben Fogle. Moving from one famous adventurer to the man who discovered the source of the Nile in Rwanda in 2005 under the most horrendous of circumstances, Neil McGrigor. He also has several other high profile expeditions under his belt, usually in a RIB,

but on 1 July will be racing his J/109 BOO, a 35ft cruiser/racer, with nine members of his family on board aged from 16 years. Neil said: “Most of the crew have never done a race before, let alone the Round the Island Race. It is a great opportunity to get the family out together. We are really looking forward to it.” This year’s Round the Island is the maiden voyage for both the yacht Mr Blue Sky, a Hanse 385, and its crew, including a Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and a Yachtmaster. Also on board they have exGloucestershire and England off spinner, and Chairman of Cricket for The Lords Taveners, Martyn Ball. Skipper Adrian Page said: “Bally is good friends with all members of the crew, and expressed interest in joining the boat after watching Alex Thomson in the Vendée Globe earlier this year, and feeling the call of the sea grow within him.” The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which is entering four yachts, has been bringing young people in recovery from cancer to take part in the Round the Island Race since 2005. Since becoming the official charity in 2007 more than £266,000 has been raised, enabling at least 470 young people who are recovering from cancer to rebuild their confidence through sailing with the Trust. There is still plenty of time to enter with standard entries open until midnight on 17 June. The race date is 1 July with a first start of 05.30. #raceforall rtir.me/entries www.roundtheisland.org.uk

GOLDEN GLOBE TO START FROM PLYMOUTH The 2018 Golden Globe Race, marking the 50th anniversary of Sir Robin KnoxJohnston’s victory in the Sunday Times Golden Globe solo non-stop round the world race, will start from Plymouth on 30 June, 2018. Cllr Ian Bowyer Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “We are delighted that Plymouth has been chosen as the host city for the Golden Globe Race. This is a true adventure of a lifetime and I am really proud that Plymouth will be able to provide a spectacular backdrop to this event. The city

has a proud and illustrious past in ocean racing which we are continuing to support and celebrate.” Six days before the start, on 14 June, is the 50th anniversary of Sir Robin’s start in the race from Falmouth aboard his 32ft yacht Suhaili. The 30 skippers competing in the 2018 Golden Globe Race will join hundreds of other yachts in Falmouth Harbour with a sail-past salute to Sir Robin. Other historic yachts joining the commemoration include Sir Francis Chichester’s Gipsy Moth IV, Sir Alec Rose’s Lively Lady, a replica of Sir Chay

Blyth’s Golden Globe race yacht Dytiscus III and Joshua, which Bernard Moitessier sailed in the original Sunday Times Race. The Golden Globe yachts and historic fleet will take part in the SITraN Challenge charity race from Falmouth to Plymouth on 15 June. This winter has seen some entrants drop out, but their places were filled by those on the Wait List. One of the fallers is Australian Shane Freeman who was forced to abandon his Tradewind 35 yacht Muska after being

capsized and dismasted in fearsome seas 600 miles west of Cape Horn. Freeman was rescued by a passing ship, and though no longer a competitor, he hopes to have a role to play supporting other competitors and the race. This has left 25 entrants including new names Izabel Pimentel from Brazil, Mark Slats from the Netherlands and Mike Smith from Australia. It also gives the opportunity for five more to fulfil lifelong dreams of sailing around the world. goldengloberace.com

MAIDEN ARRIVES IN SOUTHAMPTON

MAIDEN has returned to Southampton for restoration after 27 years. The boat made history when it was the first yacht to be sailed by an all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1990. Once restored Maiden will begin a global campaign - The Maiden Factor - to give more girls around the world access to a basic education. Maiden’s skipper Tracy Edwards said: “The crew of Maiden faced many obstacles and prejudices. Very few people believed an allfemale crew could complete the race and not only did we prove everyone wrong, we won two legs and came second overall. Now we would like to do the same for women around the world, who are being denied an education and the opportunity to reach their full potential.” Maiden will be restored at Hamble Yacht Services, where she was originally fitted out for the 1990 race. www.themaidenfactor.org

IAN WALKER IS NEW RYA DIRECTOR OF RACING THE RYA will have an experienced new hand at the helm with the announcement that Ian Walker MBE is to take up the Director of Racing position this autumn. The double Olympic medallist, America’s Cup sailor and winning Volvo Ocean Race skipper will take up the role from John Derbyshire OBE, who is set to retire after 32 years’ involvement with the organisation, including 16 years in the Director of Racing role. As well as winning two Olympic silver medals and coaching Shirley Robertson, Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb to Yngling gold at Athens 2004, Ian has

been involved with two America’s Cup campaigns (GBR Challenge in 2003; +39 in 2007) and won the 2014/15 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. A trustee of the John Merricks Sailing Trust, set up in memory of his 470 crew, he has also helped provide a supporting hand to numerous young people through the sport of sailing. As Director of Racing, a position he will take over full-time from October, Ian will oversee the RYA’s World Class Programme and talent pathways, as well as the broader remit of racing participation in all its forms in the UK.

“Having achieved more than I could have ever dreamed of in a sailing career spanning over 30 years, I have decided that the time is right to take on a new challenge,” the 47-year-old explained. “I am very excited at the prospect of helping the British Sailing Team again in their Olympic quest but, just as importantly, at helping young sailors, the clubs and the volunteers that are the lifeblood of our sport. “I am sure I will miss the thrill of competition, but on a personal level I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and to sailing for fun at my club again.”

RYA CEO Sarah Treseder said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Ian to the RYA family. A world-renowned sailor and outstanding leader, his breadth and depth of experience of the sport will be of huge benefit to the UK racing community. “His remit is a wide but exciting one – supporting medal-winning performances on the world stage, including Tokyo 2020, and at the same time inspiring future participants, volunteers, coaches and champions to ensure a thriving UK club racing scene.” www.rya.org.uk facebook.com/RoyalYachtingAssociation

ALTHOUGH sailing had been included in the Summer Paralympic Games from 2000 to 2016, after its introduction as a demonstration sport in 1996, it will not feature at Tokyo in 2020. Sailing was removed by the International Paralympic because the sport did not meet the IPC criteria, but World Sailing is working hard to see sailing reinstated for the 2024 Paralympics. A key factor is the sport’s worldwide reach. In order to qualify sports must be “widely and regularly

practiced in a minimum of 32 countries and three IPC regions”. Therefore at the 2017 Para World Sailing Championships over 20 - 25 June it is important to reach and possibly exceed that target otherwise the door will be closed for 2024. With the average participation at previous Para Worlds around 28 nations the result is not clear, especially as many countries had funding cuts follow the exclusion from the 2020 Paralympics. www.sailing.org/disabled

HMS WARRIOR 1860 TO JOIN NATIONAL MUSEUM SOME 30 years after HMS Warrior 1860 returned to Portsmouth, it has been announced that her owners, the Warrior Preservation Trust, has merged with The National Museum of the Royal Navy. As Britain’s first iron-clad battleship, Warrior is one of the most influential warships ever built and a key attraction at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, welcoming 330,000 visitors a year. She was built as Queen Victoria’s deterrent against rumoured French invasion, and was so advanced and powerfully armed that she completed her job without ever firing a shot in anger during 10 years of front line service. The Warrior Preservation Trust is an independent charity with the purpose of preserving the ship and maintaining her on display for the benefit and education of the public. It employs 40 staff and is supported by 70 volunteers. There will be no immediate change for staff and volunteers and the Chief Executive of the Warrior Preservation Trust and Captain of the ship, Commander Tim Ash will remain. All hospitality bookings and other committed work will be honoured, and the ship’s business will continue as usual. Her £4.2m upper deck conservation work is unaffected with completion due at Easter 2018. Established in 2009, the National Museum of the

Royal Navy already owns a number of key historic ships and collections in Portsmouth, Gosport and nationally. These include HMS Victory and First World War monitor HMS M.33. It will open the new Royal Marines Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2020 alongside an innovative Centre for Discovery, which will transform naval heritage at its headquarters at The National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth. Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of the National Museum, said: “Warrior is a fantastic ship which tells an incredibly important part of our naval story and we are very excited to welcome her into our fleet. We congratulate the Warrior Preservation Trust for the brilliant job it has done in saving her and in caring for her thus far.” Chief Executive of the Warrior Preservation Trust, and Captain of the Ship, Commander Tim Ash said: “We have worked closely with the National Museum as partners for many years, and feel that the time is right for us to align our shared expertise more closely. Our new relationship will allow us to tell Warrior’s story more effectively and merge our efforts in meeting better the needs of our great historic fleet of ships.” Watch a video with Chairmen Admiral Sir Jonathon Band and Rear Admiral Neil Latham at the All at Sea Facebook page: www.facebook.com/allatseanewspaper

OVER the 4 - 6 August, the tenth RYA Sailability Multiclass Regatta will return to Rutland Sailing Club. The regatta is the biggest event of its type in the country and offers two days of competitive racing across a range of classes including 2.4mR, Challenger, Hansa, Kinsman, Laser, RS Venture, Skud, Sonar, SQIB and Weta. For the first time an open class is included so everyone is welcome to compete no matter what boat you sail. RYA Sailability Manager Joff McGill said: “We are hugely excited about this year’s event. The Multiclass is a fantastic

opportunity for sailors to experience racing in large fleets for the first time, as well as providing some very competitive racing for those with more experience. “We have made some exciting changes this year to enable even more people to take part, whatever their disability, experience or boat.” Also on offer, on 4 August, is a day of expert training from race coaches. Whether you are new to racing and want to get off the start line or you are looking for top tips to stay at the front of the fleet, there will be something on offer for all competitors. www.rya.org.uk/sailability

SUZUKI ANNOUNCES INSURANCE SCHEME SUZUKI GB has announced a unique ‘new for old’ insurance scheme to provide additional cover for boats powered by its ultimate fourstroke outboards. The Suzuki marine insurance has been designed to cover both boat and outboard, giving customers complete peace of mind. A major benefit of this scheme is that if the worst should happen and a Suzuki outboard with this cover is stolen, the customer will receive a new like-for-like replacement outboard without deduction or any additional excess. The insurance, which is administered by Bishop Skinner Marine, applies to outboards

up to three-years-old. Suzuki already offers free Datatag security marking on its 30hp – 300hp models as an effective form of theft deterrent. George Cheeseman, Head of Suzuki GB’s Marine Division, said, “We are delighted to announce the launch of this new insurance scheme. Outboard theft is a real problem. “We have been working with Datatag for many years now to help look after our customers and prevent them from suffering at the hands of thieves. This new insurance scheme should give our customers even more added value and peace of mind.” www.bishopskinner.com

Q&A with Gavin Reid who won YJA Yachtsman of the Year after volunteering to swim to the assistance of a yacht in distress during Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO TAKE PART IN THE CLIPPER 2015-16 RACE?

I wanted to take part in a new challenge that gave me the opportunity to further explore the world and learn a whole new skill set. The Clipper Race immediately captured my imagination and it was the perfect antidote to working behind a desk for two years.

We aborted that idea and I lowered myself back down to the staysail, and we then sent the spare halyard to the crewman. He then attached that on to himself and went down the unconventional route of the forestay.

UNICEF GIFTED ENTRY TO CLIPPER RACE

UNICEF have been gifted an entry in the 40,000nm Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which starts this August from Liverpool. The cost of the team entry has been donated by the race organisers to Unicef UK, the Official Clipper Race Charity. The 2017-18 Race will mark the second consecutive edition that the organisation has been gifted one of the event’s 70ft yachts, which will represent Unicef and its work to make a safer world for children. During the 11-month ocean odyssey the Unicef branded yacht and its crew will visit six different continents as part of the race fleet, including stopovers in the UK, South America, Cape Town, Sydney, China, USA and Derry-Londonderry. The distinctive blue and white yacht will enable local Unicef offices and projects to raise awareness of their work with the local communities and engage with their partners.

In further Clipper news, Ocean Safety is once again an official supplier to the Clipper Race as the company signs a third contract. Ocean Safety will supply a comprehensive range of safety equipment on each of the 12 yachts competing in the race. Personal location AIS devices will be integrated into all lifejackets for the first time. The 2015-16 edition incurred the first two fatalities in the history of the event, with the recovery of one deceased sailor attributed to their AIS signal. Clipper Race Chairman, Sir Robin KnoxJohnston, said: “There is one thing that is paramount in ocean racing; safety, safety, safety. Ensuring our fleet and crew are equipped and prepared is fundamental to the Clipper Race, that is why I am so pleased that our longstanding partnership with Ocean Safety is continuing.” He added: “With each race edition, we strive to

Robin, Billy, James and Barry

learn, develop and continue to offer the highest safety standards to our crew. These include the choice to integrate AIS into all crew lifejackets.” As the official Start and Finish Partner, Liverpool will utilise the Clipper Race’s global platform to raise its international profile and maritime legacy, hoping to inspire the next generation of sailors and seafaring enthusiasts in the waterfront city. It also aims to promote its cultural heritage on the world stage to position the city as the home of large scale cultural events that are accessible for all – reinforced at the moment as Liverpool bids to be the UK host for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “It is a huge coup for Liverpool to once again play host to the start and finish of this prestigious race.” www.clipperroundtheworld.com

FOUR MEN AND AN OCEAN A British man with Parkinson’s and his three teammates are planning to row their way into the record books by becoming the fastest four-man crew to row the Indian Ocean. The quartet will row 3,600nm, non-stop and unassisted, to raise awareness and funds for Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. The journey, which marks 200-years since Parkinson’s forefather James Parkinson’s first publication of the disease, will start in Exmouth in Western Australia in June and end in Port Louis, Mauritius. Robin Buttery, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s two years ago at the age of 43, will be joined by skipper Billy Taylor and fellow rowers Barry Hayes and James Plumley. Billy said: “Rowing the Indian Ocean is no easy feat at the best of times - the physical and mental challenge will be enormous for all of us. Having

TAKE THE PLASTIC CHALLENGE

WITH more plastic than fish in our seas a possibility by 2050, according to some predictions, our reliance on plastic in all its forms is clear. The Marine Conservation Society is once again throwing down the gauntlet to the public to take on the Plastic Challenge throughout June. MCS, supported by BRITA UK, is asking people to give up single-use plastics for a whole month. The challenge is to say goodbye to conveniences like prepacked sandwiches, ready meals and plastic-bottled

drinks for a day, a week or, if possible, the whole of June. MCS says the amount of plastic litter on our beaches has increased by 180 per cent in the last 20 years and has become a massive threat to marine wildlife. Plastic bags, bottles and tiny plastic pieces are regularly found in the stomachs of turtles and other sea creatures, and in some cases caused death from starvation or choking. Register to take part in the Plastic Challenge at www.mcsuk.org/plasticchallenge.

Robin on board has changed the entire project - it is no longer about four idiots taking on a huge endurance challenge. “Now, it has become a platform in which Robin can reach out to people with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease and raise awareness of this condition that so few people know about.” Robin said: “Having Parkinson’s, or any disability for that matter, is no barrier to pursuing your goals. I want to encourage others with a Parkinson’s diagnosis to take up exercise (in whatever form works for them), and use it to help combat the symptoms associated with the disease. A life of adventure does not have to end with a diagnosis.” Oxford Brookes University will closely monitor Robin’s performance to understand more about Parkinson’s disease. Professor Helen Dawes who leads the Movement Science Group at

the University said: “It is an important piece of research that will help us better understand how the metabolic, cardiovascular and neuro-muscular systems cope and adapt to prolonged endurance activity. We are hoping the findings will send the search for therapies and a cure in a new direction.” The men will have no support team and will be taking it in turns to row two hours on, two hours off, day and night. Former Olympian and renowned sports scientist, Professor Greg Whyte has been working closely with the men in helping them prepare for the row across the Indian Ocean. During the row the four men will be raising money in aid of Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease via Clear Trust. Donations can be made at www.rowtheindianocean.com www.parkinsons.org.uk

THE Four Oarsmen are set to take part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to raise money for MIND and Spinal Research. Friends since school, Dicky Taylor (31), George Biggar (31), Peter Robinson (31) and Stuart Watts (34) are on a mission to be the first crew into English Harbour, Antigua. The men, who have limited previous rowing experience, will row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua. The Four Oarsmen, who are close friends, will be raising funds and awareness for Mind and Spinal Research, two charities close to their hearts. George’s father Mike, a past Scotland rugby captain, sustained catastrophic brain damage in a car accident. His mother, previously a successful lawyer as well a trustee for MIND, recently died

after a life spent battling with mental illness. Pete also has a strong connection to Spinal Research, with two close friends tragically paralysed through spinal cord injury, one during a rugby game in Hong Kong and the other in a cycling accident. The Four Oarsmen will also embark on a shoreside fundraising challenge, rowing the 3,000 mile distance on land with their training Ergo rowing machines at a number of venues around the UK. Although none of The Four Oarsmen have a history of rowing, they have taken on numerous cycling, canoeing and hiking challenges between them. Their latest challenge will start on 12 December finishing in mid-January 2018 when they cross the finish line in English Harbour, Antigua. www.thefouroarsmen.com

BEN FOGLE HELPS RESTORE THE OYSTER TO THE SOLENT like structures, designed and built by MDL Marinas, which are prototypes that can be used in the future by other marinas and boat owners who wish to help to restore the native oyster. Volunteers have already lowered these oyster-filled cages from the pontoons of four MDL Marinas, Hamble Point, Port Hamble, Sparkes and Saxon Wharf, as well as the pontoons at Portsmouth University and the pontoon that MDL Marinas installed at Landrover BAR HQ. The oysters will be protected in these cages whilst reproducing seed oysters that will travel to new habitats around the Solent. Oysters usually reach maturity in one year. They are protandric during their first year, they spawn as males by releasing sperm into the water. As they grow over the next two or three years and develop greater energy reserves, they spawn as females by releasing eggs. Dean Smith, Commercial Director of MDL Marinas, said: “Helping to restore the native oyster population, an important part of the local ecosystem which removes pollutants and provides habitats, is one of many ways that the boating community can give back to the ocean and improve the local waters around us for our future enjoyment.” The Solent oyster industry was once the largest in Europe but was closed in 2013 due to depleted stocks caused by overfishing. The native oyster population

in the UK has halved over the last 25 years, while globally an estimated 85 per cent of oyster beds and reef habitats have been lost. The restoration of the native oyster will provide wide-ranging ecological and social benefits for the region over the longterm by helping to improve water quality, foster valuable habitats and re-establish an important strand of the economy on the South Coast. Tim Glover, BLUE’s UK Projects Director, explained the significance of the next stage of the Solent Oyster Restoration Project: “Last year we started this project with pilots at Land Rover BAR and the University of Portmouth’s raft in Langstone Harbour (monitored by scientists from the University) which showed that the

A UK-based marine conservation charity, Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE), enlisted the help of the broadcaster, traveller and adventurer Ben Fogle to raise awareness of its initiative to restore the native oyster to the Solent. Their plan is to reintroduce one million oysters by the end of 2017. Ben is a passionate marine conservationist, and has worked with a team of volunteers to get the programme underway at MDL’s Port Hamble marina. BLUE has partnered with MDL Marinas, Landrover BAR and the University of Portsmouth to roll out the project across the Solent, which involves using a local team of volunteers to fill cages with 10,000 oysters, suspended underneath the pontoons of MDL’s marinas. Ben, who first became interested in marine pollution after rowing across the Atlantic, told us: “The humble oyster is an incredibly powerful ecosystem engineer, capable of filtering 200 litres of water a day and supporting marine life. Restoring the native oyster to the Solent would be another step closer to turning the tide against the large-scale degradation of our oceans, and giving something back to the UK’s inshore waters which provide us with so many benefits.” We asked Ben how many oysters will be needed to restock the Solent. Ben told us: “Five million in five years is our goal.” The oysters are placed in unique cage-

technique of suspending cages of oysters under floating pontoons can result in healthy reproduction and low mortality. “Now BLUE is ready to go a stage further. Our aim is to introduce up to 1 million oysters to the Solent over the course of 2017, mostly into protected seabed sites. We hope this five-year programme will have a transformational effect on the Solent in the long-term.” All At Sea asked Tim what we as leisure boaters can do to improve water quality

and look after the marine environment. He said: “As a boat owner myself I am aware that most boaters are responsible water users and want to protect marine life. Always be aware of your behaviour in harbours and out on the water.” The project will be funded by donations. It will cost £75,000 to sponsor one million oysters. Members of the public can sponsor a cage for £150. For more information or to donate to BLUE go to bluemarinefoundation.com/project/solent/

AMERICA’S CUP

The wait is over as the six teams come together in Bermuda this month to battle it out for victory in the much anticipated America’s Cup.

T

he eyes of the world will turn to the iconic Great Sound in Bermuda when the best sailors on the fastest boats will race for the oldest trophy in international sport. The action kicks off on 26 May when all six teams take to the water. ORACLE TEAM USA will be attempting to become just the second team in history to win three consecutive America’s Cup matches after winning in 2010 and famously defending the title in 2013. The America’s Cup has changed beyond all recognition in its 166 year history as both a sporting and design contest. In the first race, back in 1851, a fleet of big, traditional yachts sailed all the way around the Isle of Wight at speeds in single digit nautical miles per hour, crewed by dozens of men with nothing more technical than a compass, thousands of metres of rope and the trusty block and tackle. In 2017 in Bermuda, the 21st British Challenger for the America’s Cup, Land Rover BAR, will race on a tightly defined course of just a few miles at speeds that could reach 60mph. There will be just six men on board, the boat will fly over the surface supported by high-tech hydrofoils and, while there will be just 67m of rope on board, there will be 130m of hydraulic pipes, over 1,200m of electronic and electrical

cabling connecting 190 sensors and four video cameras – all in a 15m boat. Sir Peter Blake, the iconic skipper who led Team New Zealand to two Cup victories (1995 and 2000) wrote: “The America’s Cup is what it is because it is so difficult to win... It is not a game for the faint hearted. It is a game for those who are not scared of pitting themselves against the best that the world has to offer. It is a game where winning is almost impossible, almost, but not impossible. And this is why it is worth fighting for. It is the difficulty that gives any challenge some sense. This is the Image: Lloyd Images essence of life itself.”

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

It was in 1851, with Queen Victoria watching from the Royal Yacht in the Solent, that a radical looking schooner called America ghosted out of the afternoon mist and sailed past in first position. When Queen Victoria asked one of her attendants who was in second place the reply was ”Your Majesty, there is no second”. That phrase is still the best description of

the America’s Cup, and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence. America, representing the young New York Yacht Club, went on to beat the best the British could offer and win the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Pound Cup. New York Yacht Club Commodore John Cox Stevens and the rest of his ownership syndicate sold the schooner and returned home to New York as heroes. They donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift, which stated that the trophy was to be “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations”. The America’s Cup was born. Since that first race just four nations – United States, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland - have won what is often called the “oldest trophy in international sport”. After winning the trophy, the United States embarked on a 132-year stretch of domination that saw boats representing the country successfully defend the trophy 24 times from 1870 until 1980.

Then, in 1983, Australia II became the first successful challenger to lift the trophy. Later, the 1988 America’s Cup Finals saw the first time two different styles of boat raced each other, with the Kiwis in a giant 90ft waterline boat against the Americans in a much smaller but faster hard-winged catamaran. The best of three series went to the Americans and after numerous court challenges the result stood. While not good for the Cup, a good thing to come from that episode was a new class of boat that featured a more modern design built to a design rule. Under the rule, all boats had to look similar, although the designers had leeway to make an impact on boat speed. Before the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007 another rule change meant nationality rules were abolished, freeing up teams to sign the best people regardless of their passport. In addition rules on the transfer of technology from prior syndicates were eased to enable new teams access to old information.

DID YOU KNOW?

The deed that governs the America’s Cup gives the defender the power to determine the rules for the next event. This rule has been used this time around by defender’s Oracle in an interesting way. In the early stages of the 34th Cup match in San Francisco, Oracle was caught off guard by Team NZ’s superior boat speed. Although they had one of sport’s greatest comebacks of all time to reclaim the Cup, Oracle did not want to find themselves in that situation again. The answer? They overhauled the race format in Bermuda, so that they are involved in the challenger elimination series to ensure there will be no surprises in the America’s Cup Match.

LAND ROVER BAR (CHALLENGER) Helmsman: Sir Ben Ainslie IT was just three years ago that Land Rover BAR was launched. The man behind the team is four times Olympic gold medalist, Sir Ben Ainslie. It was Ben’s vision to bring the America’s Cup home. Ben Ainslie is team principal and skipper and is on his fourth America’s Cup campaign after helping ORACLE TEAM USA win the Cup in 2013. The Land Rover BAR team that has developed over the last couple of years is made up of some of the best British and international sailors, designers, builders and racing support. In the nine events of the World Series leading up to Bermuda, the team were only off the podium twice, recording four event wins (Portsmouth twice, Oman and Fukuoka), bolstered by a second (Chicago) and two third places (Gothenburg and Toulon). Land Rover BAR set the tone for racing in Bermuda as they were the first team to launch their race boat, named Rita. The ORACLE TEAM USA (DEFENDER)

matt black boat represents the combined efforts across three years of the now 120-strong team and their partners. After the launch of four test boats, 85,000 hours of design and build, on the water testing and painstaking construction, the team has seen its efforts crystallised into the boat. Richard Hopkirk, Land Rover BAR Engineering Manager, said: “The innovation, technology and attention to detail in the design and construction continue the America’s Cup’s traditions of the most advanced sailboats on the planet. We believe this is the most sophisticated and best prepared British challenger, with a total campaign design effort of 50,000 hours, and a construction effort of 35,000 hours for Rita.” Sir Ben said: “For a new team, we have had to create that infrastructure, build those relationships in a relatively short amount of time, compared to our opposition. “I think that if you look at it that way, it is clear that Oracle Team USA, Artemis and Emirates Team New Zealand should be the favourites, particularly OTUSA.”

Bermuda’s Great Sound will form a natural amphitheatre for the racecourse. June offers excellent racing conditions, creating the perfect competitive atmosphere for the America’s Cup. Historical wind data indicates there should be racing conditions 90 per cent of the time. However, conditions are varied, increasing the challenge for designers and sailors. Each team will race each other twice in the Qualifiers scoring one point per win. The top four challengers will then advance to

the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs where they will be split into two semi-finals with the winners racing in a final to determine the top challenger. Each Challenger Playoff round is a first to five series. The Playoff winner will face the defender, ORACLE TEAM USA, in the 35th America’s Cup Match. If the team that wins the Qualifiers is in the Match they will start with a one point advantage. The first team to earn seven points wins the America’s Cup Match and the glory of taking the Cup home.

THE BOAT

In the America’s Cup World Series leading up to Bermuda the teams have been racing on the AC45F, which is a state-ofthe-art catamaran with a solid aeroplane wing-like sail and hydrofoils to provide lift and speeds of up to 35 knots. This is a onedesign boat sailed by a crew of five with each designed to the same set of rules. However in Bermuda it is goodbye to the AC45s and welcome to the America’s Cup Class. This is a very fast, foiling, wing-sailed catamaran, manned by six crew. These boats are nearly 50ft and are built to a design rule, but that rule allows designers and engineers to express their creativity in their designs.

FUTURE OF THE CUP

The launch of Emirates Team New Zealand’s race boat created a lot of interest. The traditional grinding pedestals have been replaced with bicycle seats and pedals, the only team with this configuration. The team delayed their arrival in Bermuda, preferring to develop their boat at home on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour until the end of March when the boat was dismantled and flown to Bermuda. This is not the first attempt made at introducing ‘leg power’ to the world of sailing. In 1977 the Swedish Challenger attempted to install bicycles and pedals to their 12m boat, but unfortunately for the team the bikes were banned by the 12m class.

A vision for the future of the America’s Cup has been agreed by current competitors that would see long-sought stability and continuity in the competition. The framework agreement and agreed future protocol binds the signatories to deliver the 36th America’s Cup and the 37th America’s Cup under certain terms. For example, the America’s Cup will be on a two-yearly cycle for AC36 (2019) and AC37 (2021). The America’s Cup World Series will start, at the election of the defender, as soon as Q4 2017. The first year of the America’s Cup World Series will be raced in AC45F foiling catamarans – the same boats used in the present America’s Cup World Series. The second year will see a transition to the America’s Cup Class boats, the same class of boats raced in Bermuda (with a slight rule modification). In addition, to reduce costs, teams will not be permitted to build, test or train on AC45 surrogate boats as they have in this cycle of the America’s Cup. Five of the six current competitors and their respective yacht clubs have already signed the framework agreement: ORACLE TEAM USA, Artemis Racing, Team France, Land Rover BAR and SoftBank Team Japan. In addition, several prospective new America’s Cup teams have expressed interest in becoming challengers.

30 MINUTES WITH

MATT CORNWELL Matt Cornwell is Grinder/Bow with Land Rover BAR at the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda. All at Sea caught up with att to find out how he got involved with the team and how they are feeling ahead of the ualifiers. HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH LAND ROVER BAR?

When Ben Ainslie decided to do the Extreme Sailing Series in 2014 he asked me if I could do that. Then, halfway through that year I signed my contract for the rest of the Cup.

LAND ROVER BAR WON THE AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES. HOW DOES THE TEAM FEEL GOING INTO THE QUALIFIERS IN BERMUDA? We are under no illusion about the toughness of the challenge we face against some very high calibre competition. Each day on the water is a development day and this will continue all the way through our America’s Cup cycle. Our shore, design and sailing teams are doing a fantastic job working to maximise the performance of our race boat R1, and we are all looking forward to getting out racing again.

MATT, HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO SAILING?

My grandad was a keen sailor and took me out on his boat when I was about six, but also growing up in Lymington sailing was very accessible to me. That is where I was bitten by the bug for racing yachts.

BEFORE THE AMERICA’S CUP, WHAT OTHER MAJOR EVENTS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN?

n 2013: Broke the Round the Island Race Multihull record with J.P. Morgan BAR in the AC45 n 2012/13: ACWS – Sailor with Team Korea n 2010: World Match Racing Champion with Team Origin n 2007: 33rd America’s Cup, Valencia – Spain with Areva Challenge (FRA) n 2008: 1st – set the multihull record, Round the Island Race with Team Origin Extreme 40 n 2004: Won the Sydney to Hobart Race with Aera n 2003: 32nd America’s Cup, Auckland - New Zealand, with Cup GBR Challenge

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES LAND ROVER BAR FACE IN THE AMERICA’S CUP?

Throughout history the fastest boat has always won the America’s Cup so it really is about squeezing every last fraction of a knot out of our boat, and we need to keep doing that all the way through the competition.

YOU HAVE KNOWN SIR BEN AINSLIE FOR MANY YEARS. WHAT IS HE LIKE TO SAIL WITH?

I have been sailing with Ben on and off for a while now – we were both part of Team Origin and won the World Match Racing Championships together in 2010. It is fair to say I have never sailed with anyone with his drive, focus and passion to win every race he sails in. Add to that his natural ability to drive all types of boat in every condition and the fact that he is a close mate then I guess you could say he is a good guy to have on board! Matt knows exactly what to expect in this America’s Cup campaign having competed previously with different teams. All images: HarryKH/LandRoverBAR

A NEW AMERICA’S CUP FRAMEWORK HAS BEEN SET IN PLACE. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE TWO-YEARLY CYCLE?

It is going to be great to finally have some stability to the Cup, for the event itself and also for the team. We are already firmly planning the next cycle knowing that the America’s Cup world will not go on hold for a year or so as it always has in the past. As much as Land Rover BAR is about this America’s Cup, we are also about the future of the team, so knowing that the event has some security moving forward means the future already looks bright.

YOU HAVE MANY ACHIEVEMENTS ALREADY, BUT WHAT OTHER SAILING EVENTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE ON?

Fleets like the TP52’s, the Mini Maxi’s, the World Matching Tour and the Extreme Sailing Series are going strong so it would be great to get involved with some of those again. I would also love to help manage a team at some stage, putting the sailors together and campaigning to win some events.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SAILORS WHO WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

To do well in professional sailing you really have to dedicate yourself to it. Sailing has to basically become your life. Sometimes that means hard work and making some sacrifices. Sail as much as you can, always be willing to learn more and try to fit in well with the teams you sail with.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

Paul Stanbridge, James Stagg, Jason Carrington, Guy Salter. These were the top British bowmen when I was getting into it and the guys I wanted to emulate. You will have a huge support both in Bermuda and back home. The best of luck to all the team and we look forward to seeing the Cup back home! #BringTheCupHome / www.landroverbar.com

But can they get all their new developments on the boat in time and can they learn to get the maximum performance from it? “We have worked so hard for the last three years and it is incredible what we have achieved in that time. We are in it to win it, those are our expectations but we know how tough it will be. “We are a new team and we have been on the back foot but I believe we have really closed the gap on the others. “I think we can achieve a ten per cent performance gain in this final period; it is the most critical time of the entire campaign. I just hope we can we learn to sail the boat in the time we have got left.” According to Ben Williams, lead strength and conditioning coach, the team trains for 12-15 hours a week in the gym, combined with yoga sessions to enhance mobility and prevent injury. As well as weight training, focusing on the upper body, four cardio sessions a week build the endurance base so they can produce power over long periods of time, similar to a cycling time trial. High-intensity interval training is designed to improve the sailor’s performance when they are nearing their VO2 maximum – the maximum rate of oxygen consumption.

Or as he calls it, the ‘hard, gritty stuff, where it is about mental toughness’. “That is what moves it from recreational sport to elite sport. The levels of athleticism combined with the technology just makes it even more intriguing.” Ainslie is the most successful Olympic sailor of all time. At just 19 he won an Olympic silver medal at his first Olympic Games and went on to win consecutive gold medals at the next four Games.

But Ben is no newcomer to success and he certainly knows what it takes to win. Which is just as well because the America’s Cup is sport’s ultimate winner-takes-all event – to the victor goes all the spoils, from the chance to make the rules, host the title defence and qualify straight to the next final and a British boat is still waiting to take that extraordinary prize. “We are about highlighting British sailing and the very best of British technology and that is important for the identity of the team,” adds Ainslie. “I am lucky to have a fantastic team around me and my management style is to get the right people and give them space to make the right decisions.” Ben understands that the America’s Cup is the last sporting summit not yet climbed and knows success would transcend his sport. “I, more than anyone, know the significance of this event for our sporting and maritime history.”

MERLINS BACK ON THE MEDINA Once the tide is in, the racing will be taking place in one of the most picturesque settings possible, as the wooden banks of the island come down to reed fringed shores. With the easy accessibility of footpaths on the banks, the sailing is sure to be something of a spectator sport. As part of the new initiative, a fleet of classic Merlin Rockets has been established at Island Harbour and it is expected that this fleet will continue to grow. To help kick start the new fleet, Island Harbour Yacht Club hosted a Merlin Rocket flavoured afternoon in their ‘clubhouse’ in

the Breeze restaurant. The Isle of Wight based dinghy historian and journalist, and All at Sea columnist, David ‘Dougal’ Henshall gave an illuminating illustrated talk to a packed audience. The classic theme was reinforced with the presence of two rigged classic Merlins out on the terrace. After the talk these attracted a great deal of attention as the audience tucked into a classic cream tea. So Merlins are now back on the Medina and will be sailing soon. EXPERTS’ FORUM THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIFEJACKETS AND SAFETY EQUIPMENT

SPINLOCK’S JAMES HALL LOOKS AT THE EVOLUTION OF LIFEJACKETS AND ASSOCIATED SAFETY EQUIPMENT IN RECENT YEARS.

T

here is no doubt that modern lifejacket design has changed considerably and one of the biggest drivers of this change has been due to personal ownership. Rather than crew relying on lifejackets being on board a boat, they want to own their own lifejacket as part of their kit bag. Customers are now happy to spend what is required to get the features they want and as result there are some great new products on the market. One the best changes in modern lifejackets is the fit and adjustment. This includes being more comfortable to wear for long periods and being something that you might put on sooner and keep on for longer. Lifejackets now look like a piece of sports equipment rather than safety equipment, with better fabrics, colour choices and design. This makes them more appealing to wear.

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. READY FOR CHANGE When Spinlock first took a look at the lifejacket sector in 2000, we found they were often being made to be as cheap as possible and resulted in something that sailors did not really want to wear. At the same time kit such as foul weather gear was getting more and more technical. We knew that the market was ready for a new technical lifejacket that was appealing to put on. Firstly we made them comfortable to wear, borrowing technology and design from the backpack industry, and secondly we made them more appealing to wear thanks to the design and detailing. One of the big choices facing the customer is buoyancy, with lifejackets approved to either 150N or 275N certificates. 275N is generally worn more in commercial marine with 150N more suited to leisure and racing, even offshore. So for leisure customers we recommend 150N as they are lighter, more compact and comfortable to wear for long periods and will, of course, perform as expected should you end up in the water. ADDED EXTRAS On the inside, if you are looking for a coastal or offshore lifejacket then look for a fitted light and sprayhood, as both are proven essentials to aid location and prolong survival. If you already have a lifejacket but would like to add a light to it, Spinlock’s LumeOn light can be retrofitted to any lifejacket bladder. The tiny lights have

Lifejacket design has changed a great deal

the effect of illuminating the whole bladder when activated, so should you fall overboard you instantly become a larger body to identify in the water. If you do end up in the water, other considerations to add to your lifejacket include electronic devices to aid location, such as PLB and MOB AIS. Equipment has come down a lot in price, but most importantly so has size. Recent MOB AIS devices fit neatly inside the cover of lifejackets and can be automatically activated to help crews and rescuers, should they need to find you. www.spinlock.co.uk

INVASIVE SPECIES WEEK Help raise awareness about harm ul effects o alien species

INVASIVE Species Week took place earlier this spring, providing a chance for RYA Affiliated Clubs and Recognised Training Centres to get involved and protect their waters from invasive aquatic species using free signs and materials. Organised by Defra and the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat to get members of the public thinking about simple steps they can take to stop the spread of invasive species, Invasive Species Week is an annual awarenessraising campaign. Invasive aquatic species block up waterways, make navigation and paddling difficult and can damage boat engines and props.

Biosecurity Minister Lord Gardiner visited the Broads during Invasive Species Week to meet student sailors from the University of East Anglia at Waveney and Oulton Broad Yacht Club, to see their work on the ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ campaign. Lord Gardiner said: “Invasive species threaten the survival of our country’s native plants and animals and cost the economy at least £1.8 billion a year. Watersports enthusiasts play a key role in our battle against these threats, so it is great to see university sailors promoting how important it is to check, clean and dry clothing and equipment. “Simple steps such as hosing down your boat and thoroughly drying your boots help to protect the future of our native species in an environment we want to enhance.”

CHECK CLEAN DRY

For watersports enthusiasts, invasive aquatic species like floating pennywort and water primrose block up waterways, making navigation and paddling difficult and damaging boat engines and props. Many, such as the quagga mussel, can attach themselves to the hull of a boat, and others can be spread from tiny fragments and survive out of water for over two weeks in damp conditions. Sailing clubs around the country can find out how following three simple steps can reduce the risk of spreading invasive aquatic species by requesting a free Check Clean Dry kit from The Green Blue via info@thegreenblue.org.uk. Since the launch of the Check Clean Dry campaign in 2011, The Green Blue and the RYA have provided a wealth of information and guidance to inland and coastal clubs about the steps they can take to minimise the spread of invasive non-native species. INNS are animals and plants that have been introduced by human activity (on purpose or by accident) to parts of the world where they are not normally found. These species can hitch a ride on boats and equipment and, when unknowingly spread from one area to another, they can have a damaging impact on plants, animals and ecosystems by spreading disease, competing for habitat and food and direct predation.

GETTING INVOLVED

ALL AT SEA MAY 2017 single handed ‘A’ Class Catamaran and the much bigger, two man ‘B’ Class.

CATS FOR THE CUP The catamaran concept has been around for centuries, but this month’s America’s Cup shows just how far this design has come.

The cat that started the craze, the Prout Brothers’ designed Shearwater. The Shearwater might have turned 60 but it still cuts a dash afloat. Image: Shearwater Class Association

THE TORNADO UK designer Rodney March had developed one of the most striking small boats ever to take to the water, the Tornado catamaran. The hulls on the Tornado were knife like, whilst weight had been ruthlessly stripped out of the boat. The heavy, conventional solid bridgedeck had been replaced by two alloy cross beams and a sailcloth ‘trampoline’ whilst above deck level, the Tornado sported a narrow chorded, high aspect advanced rig. The Tornado was a quantum leap forward in capability and performance and would soon grace the Olympic regatta as an eye-catching boat with the most breath taking of performance.

“It is the happy marriage of high-tech construction, wing masts and foils that have made the America’s Cup boats such a visually stunning picture that they now represent the pinnacle o worldwide competition a oat

I

n the late 1940s and early 1950s, Jack Holt and business partner Beecher Moore would together turbo charge the dinghy sailing scene with an incredible series of new designs. But even as their boats got quicker around a racecourse, they were about to be overtaken by a dramatic new development from two brothers on Canvey Island in Essex. Roland and Francis Prout had been keen canoeists, representing Britain in the 1952 Olympic competition for kayaks. After the Helsinki Games, they

had the wonderful idea of lashing two K1 kayaks together with some bamboo poles. On to this they steeped a mainsail and jib and the modern catamaran was born. OLD FOR NEW The idea of a twin hulled boat was certainly not new; indeed the Polynesian Islanders as far back as the middle of the Bronze Age had explored far and wide across the Pacific in boats made of two simple hulls held apart by a wooden frame. At the same time that the Normans were invading

England in fairly crude ships, it would be the highly advanced civilization of the Chola dynasty in what is now Sri Lanka that would seriously develop multi-hulls for their expansionist voyages as far east as modern day Indonesia. They called their boats kattumaran, a rough translation of which is logs/hulls bound together. MODERN DESIGN Fast forwarding to more modern times, the great innovative designer Nat Herreshoff sought a US patent for a practical racing multi-hull that he

had christened Duplex. Launched in 1877, the boat was such a success that the New York Yacht Club promptly banned it. Things went much better for the Prout Brothers who quickly set out refining their exciting development into a practical racing catamaran. Winning a cross-channel race that was run from Folkestone to Boulogne did them no harm at all as it brought their efforts to the attention of none other than Beecher Moore. Before long the Prout’s Shearwater III would enter the record books as the first production built racing catamaran. In these early days they would be pushed hard by Southampton based designer and builder Bill O’Brien, who believed that the catamaran hull form would perform better with a hard chine. Certainly Bill’s Jumpahead and RiverCat designs were quick, but the market leader would be the Shearwater. WEIGHT FACTOR Although an exciting leap forward in the development of small sailing craft, these early catamarans were still fairly weighty and unsophisticated. The top dinghy designer of the day, Ian Proctor, is quoted as saying that in racing boat design “weight is only of value if you are designing a steamroller”. Certainly, these first generation catamarans would be held back by their weight, much of which was in the solid ‘bridge-deck’ that joined the two hulls together. This situation would be radically changed a decade later when the IYRU (now World Sailing), recognising that catamarans were becoming a vibrant part of the sailing scene, called for a set of Trials up on the Thames estuary at the Catamaran Yacht Club on the Isle of Sheppey. The Trials were actually for two boats: a

Meanwhile, the catamaran that had started it all, the Shearwater had added a spinnaker to its sail wardrobe and for a long time was known as the ‘cat with a kite’. The Tornado, though, had started the search for what would become known as ‘apparent wind sailing’, where the faster the boat sails, the more apparent wind it generates. With modern composite construction taking over both in the hulls and the rigs, the latest generation of catamarans continued to define the extreme end of the performance spectrum. Now it was not just 20ft long Tornados that were gracing the water, but monster multi-hulls that shrunk the globe by proving that these amazing craft could be raced successfully in the wild expanses of the southern oceans. AMERICA’S CUP But it would be two other catamaran based developments that, when they were brought together, would provide the platform for the 35th America’s Cup that starts this month in Bermuda. As far back as the IYRU Trials, East Coast innovator Austin ‘Clarence’ Farrar had been experimenting with wing masts, but it would be another 40 plus years before construction techniques and material technology would make them truly viable. Almost as old was an idea that the first foiling pioneer, James Grogono, had been pursuing, when he rigged his Tornado Icarus with a set of hydrofoils. It is the happy marriage of high-tech construction, wing masts and foils that have made the America’s Cup boats such a visually stunning picture that they now represent the pinnacle of worldwide competition afloat. In the same way that the linking of two dugout canoes helped shrink the world, so the modern equivalent is bringing us closer together through competition!

PUSH THE BOAT OUT this summer

If you want to get back out on the water this year or perhaps inspire your non-sailing family and friends to give sailing or windsurfing a go, then make sure you are ready for RYA Push the Boat Out.

D

ue to its success, PTBO returns for nine days this year from 13 - 21 May with sailing clubs and centres across the UK offering free or low cost taster sessions for all. During the two weekends and five weekdays, PTBO 2017 promises even more activities to appeal to a wide range of people, showcasing what the sport offers, from the freedom of being on the water, to the social buzz, the thrill of racing and the fact there really is something for everyone. It is no surprise that over the past four years over 90,000 people have experienced boating at PTBO events. RYA Club Support Advisor Jackie Bennetts explained: “Since the beginning four years ago, Push the Boat Out has continued to grow. 2016 was a huge success, probably our biggest and best yet with thousands of people getting out on the water plus 50 MPs attending local events across the country too. “Since then we have been busy making sure that 2017 will be even better and we are delighted to see more venues

IS SAILING FOR ME?

Your idea of sailing might be big, expensive yachts and a life on the ocean waves. But people regularly go down to their local sailing club, sailing small sailboats or windsurfing with friends just loving the buzz of being on the water. You could be one of them. As Susie Moore, RYA Regional Development Officer for the South, explained: “Whatever you think about sailing, Push the Boat Out will change your mind. “You will be able to get out on the water with experienced sailors that you will find to be exactly like you, in a boat which is suitable for you, whatever your age, ability or experience. “That is why sailing is one of the most inclusive sports around. You might want a leisurely sail with your family, to experience something a bit faster and adrenaline fueled or just potter about with your partner, and you can.” “Do not worry about kit, packing a lunch or anything else; every Push the Boat Out event will provide all the equipment you need with refreshments available too. “You will also discover you do not even need a boat to learn to sail locally, as clubs and centres have ones you can use, and if you find your whole family enjoys messing about in boats so much you want to join a local club it could cost just £20 a month, or even less, for all of you.” Susie added: “Sailing has benefitted from significant investment from the RYA and Sport England in the past four years. Many clubs have excellent, accessible

clubhouse facilities, which include comfortable lounges, up-to-date changing areas and rooms dedicated to learning to sail and knowledge improvement. You will discover all this at Push the Boat Out.”

PTBO TASTER SESSIONS

No matter what your experience, if you turn up to a PTBO taster session you will sail a boat with an experienced sailor or instructor nearby. If you are a beginner you will get in the boat and they will show you the ropes and tell you what you need to get going. They make everything easy to understand and get you ready to have a go. There is no need to worry about the equipment as everything needed is provided by the venue including a buoyancy aid or lifejacket. All you need to do is turn up with some warm clothes, a pair of old shoes and a waterproof coat in case it rains. The campaign has backing from Rio 2016 Gold Medallist Saskia Clark who learnt to sail at her local club. “It is fantastic to see so many people being given the opportunity to discover what the sport is all about right on their doorstep - make sure you put Push the Boat Out in the diary!” So grab a towel and some old trainers you do not mind getting wet and sail into summer with Push the Boat Out. Find your nearest event at www.rya. org.uk/go/PTBO. There will be more free and low cost ‘try sailing and windsurfing’ taster sessions this summer at watersport centres. Find more opportunities to try sailing and information about how you can start your sailing adventure at www.rya.org.uk/ go/startboating. www.rya.org.uk

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

BLOOD MONEY

1

4

Lower deck name for what was officially termed Bounty Money – monies paid to crews for sinking an enemy vessel. Blood money was, however, the more honest appellation since the amounts were reckoned not on the size or importance of the enemy ship but rather on the numbers of crew slaughtered. At one time this was as high as five guineas for every man killed.

After qualifying for the Velux5Oceans race by sailing to Halifax, Nova Scotia and back, the boat was given a thorough re-fit, including a new engine, electronics, sails and rigging and completed the race in May 2007 in fourth position. At 68 Sir Robin was the oldest competitor in the Velux5Oceans race.

Alice Eves £17/£4.99 (Kindle) Amazon.com/books This is an inspiring true tale of adventure set mainly in the Tahitian islands and along the coast of Brazil when Alice Eves and a friend set sail for 18 months on their 35ft yacht. The book features descriptions of fresh bananas, papaya and juicy mangoes and of dark starry skies on overnight passages. It takes the reader to exotic places to meet fishermen in the turquoise lagoons of

Jane Maufe £18.99 (hardback) The Northwest Passage proved elusive for so long that many sailors and explorers believed it did not actually exist. A sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic archipelago, it was not until Roald Amundsen’s 1903 – 1906 voyage that the Northwest Passage’s existence was finally proved, but the transit is treacherous and entirely dependent upon the ice giving up its grip for sufficient time to allow vessels through. This is not a journey undertaken by average sailors in small private boats. But David Scott Cowper is no ordinary sailor. There are seven possible routes through the Northwest Passage, and the 73-year-old Cowper sailed through six of them. The Frozen Frontier is the account of the sixth and most northerly, from ocean to ocean through the McClure Strait, this time accompanied by Jane Maufe, his crew. As well as a story of adventurous sailing this book provides a fascinating insight into the relationship between two dedicated sailors, alone together in some of the most isolated and forbidding desolate wastes on earth.

the South Pacific and on to coves, museums and music in Brazil. Amazing people and places are brought to life in this tale.

Written by the late Paul Elvstrom, Olympic gold medallist and legendary sailor, this is a long established classic valued by racers of all levels and ages. The unique approach devised by Paul offers bird’s-eye views and detailed explanations of how the rules are applied to racing situations, with each cross-referenced to the relevant case studies provided by World

Sailing. Completely revised to cover the new rules for 2017 - 2020, the book includes the full text of the racing rules, with a handy quick-reference guide highlighting the latest changes. There is also a confidence-building section about how to present your case in a protest. This is the ideal pocket reference for racers in every type of boat.

BOATOWNER’S MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL MANUAL Repair and Improve Your Boat’s Essential Systems Nigel Calder £60 (hardback) This manual takes both novice and experienced boat owners through minor to major repairs of electrical systems, engines, electronics, steering systems, generators, pumps, cookers, spars and rigging. When it was first

published in 1990, the manual broke new ground. There have been significant changes in boat systems since then, particularly electrical systems, and this fourth edition has been updated to reflect these developments.

EAT WELL, SAIL HARD In 2015 Lizzy Foreman took part in the Mini Transat and hopes to race in the Vendée Globe one day. In this series the experienced racer takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the challenge these men and women face. This month Lizzy looks at the important subject of ensuring the correct diet during offshore races AT the highest level of our sport there is no margin for error in physical preparation. The best-equipped, lightest and most high tech yacht will not go quickly around the course if the sailors on board are fatigued, cold and hungry. What sailors eat and drink before, during and after a race plays a key part in a crew’s success on the water.

In events such as the Vendée Globe and the Volvo Ocean Race, sailors typically burn between 3,500 - 6,000 calories a day; more than double the average daily requirements for an adult male and the equivalent of eating 35 jacket potatoes or 78 hard-boiled eggs. Previously a 60/20/20 diet – where you get 60 per cent of your daily calories from carbohydrate and 20 per

cent each from fat and protein – was considered optimal for performance. Now, however, it is thought better to work out macronutrient needs in terms of nutrient per gram of body weight, per hour of exercise.

RIGHT BALANCE

In endurance races, complex carbohydrates (such as whole-grain breads, cereals, rice, pasta) should form the bulk of the diet, as they are used strictly as fuel by the body. As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that between 1 - 5g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight, per hour of exercise should be consumed for optimal performance, along with 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day for serious athletes. Dietary fat needs are less sensitive to fluctuations in training volume, and generally will be met by eating the right amount of carbohydrates and protein. Although it sounds difficult to consume this much food, freezedried meals in particular have been optimised to provide a large number of carbohydrates and protein per meal. produce 800 calorie freeze-dried meals that consist of 69 grams of carbohydrate, 47 grams of fat and 21 grams of protein – while Sport Kitchen produce 300 calorie meals with 30 grams of carbohydrate, 34 grams of protein and only 4g of fat. Typically, four freeze-dried meals a day (lunch, dinner, midnight, early hours) plus breakfast (porridge or muesli) will provide the bulk of calories required, but will need to be topped up with energy gels, carbohydrate drinks and sports snacks to ensure that nutritional needs are adequately met.

ORGANISATION

Typically for offshore races daily ration packs will be made, consisting of three to four freeze-dried meals plus various snacks and energy gels; all of which will be dated or numbered for each day of the race and packed in waterproof, stackable bags. Despite being freeze-dried, such meals can equate to up to 180kg of

weight on the boat during a Vendée Globe race, yet often are preferred over wet, boil in the bag meals that generally have a lower carbohydrate content. Homemade vacuum packed meals and treats can provide a welcome change on board. During the 2015 Mini Transat race, I set off with about 40 of mum’s homemade flapjacks – plus some slices of fruit cake – and wished I had packed some more. I was not as lucky as Sebastien José, however, who in the 2016 – 2017 edition of the Vendée Globe ate vacuum packed meals that had been cooked by Julien Gatillon, a Michelin starred chef! MARINA FOCUS YACHT HAVEN QUAY, PLYMOUTH

ALL AT SEA MAY 2017

Yacht Haven Quay Plymouth, Breakwater Road, Plymouth, Devon, PL9 7FE 01752 481190 www.yachthavens.com boatyard@yachthavenquay.com

Yacht aven uay is the first purpose built dry stack marina in the U , offering secure, save and cost effective berthing to over 00 boats. PART of the multi-award winning Yacht Havens Group, Yacht Haven Quay Plymouth has the charm, personal service and character that comes with a family-owned marina, whilst also delivering many valuable offerings. Located in the epicentre of the south west’s marine scene, Yacht Haven Quay Plymouth offers undercover berthing for RIBs and motorboats up to 11m in length. This combination has created a distinctive on-site friendship between berth holders and staff with a mutual love of the sea at the heart. And, with Yacht

Haven Quay being recognised by British Marine in their 2016 awards for the quality of their staff, it is clear to see that there is something special happening at the dry stack. Whether you reside in the south west or you simply enjoy spending your spare time holidaying in the region, using this dry stack means you simply arrive at the marina, step on board and go boating. All you have to do is enjoy your time afloat. Furthermore, with the Devon and Cornwall coastline to explore, your only worry will be choosing where to go.

How Dry Stack Berthing Works

Dry stack berthing is a safe, secure and cost-effective way to berth your boat with significant cost advantages compared to traditional water berthing. Yacht Haven Quay houses over 200 boats with customers allowed unlimited launching, on two hours’ notice, all-year round. The sheltered environment protects your boat and hull from general wear and tear, so you do not need to change anodes or antifoul as often.  Your boat is stored in a custom racking system  When you would like to go out on your boat, simply call or text the Haven Team who will launch your boat ready for your arrival

 When you arrive, your boat will be on the pontoon so you can step on board and go  On return, simply leave your boat tied alongside one of their pontoons  The Haven Team will lift your boat, wash her off and return her to the dry stack. They can even refuel your boat for you “It is a unique method of storage. There is no hassle, your boat is 100 per cent safe and it is based in a beautiful location in the south west. There is even a great café and a fascinating Dive Museum. What more could you possibly want?” - Monty Halls, TV broadcaster, Explorer and Adventurer

ALSO WORTH A MENTION...

The famous Dive Museum, located next door to the Marina Office, is a lifetime’s treasure trove collected by former Royal Marine and commercial diver Ray Ives. As well as having a wealth of knowledge from decades of diving around the world, Ray’s collection of artefacts is something to behold with

countless rare and historical items dating back centuries. Make sure you drop by Ray’s Plaice. Also, do not forget to try out the Mess Room Café. PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The Dry Stack process runs seamlessly. I am amazed and delighted at how smoothly the marina operates without fuss and without delay.” Philip Jones, berth holder

“I have been very impressed indeed by the attitude of all the staff, without exception. They are kind, cheerful, efficient and extremely helpful – they are a pleasure to engage with!” Steve Houser, berth holder

MARINA FAQ

Q: WHAT TYPE AND SIZE BOATS DO YOU CATER FOR? A: Our Dry Stack can accommodate motor cruisers, sports boats, RIBs and fast fishers from 13ft to 36ft in length. Our boatyard caters for all types of sail or motor vessels up to 45ft. Q: WHAT HAPPENS IF I RETURN TO MY BERTH AFTER HOURS? A: Not a problem. Just tie up on our pontoons and we will lift and wash your boat the following morning. Q: WHAT IF I WANT TO HEAD OUT ON THE WATER FOR SUNRISE? A: We like your thinking! Just give us a call or text the night before and we will launch your boat the day before. When you arrive at the crack of dawn, your boat will be on the pontoon ready to go. Q: WHAT IF I WANT TO WORK ON MY BOAT IN THE RACK? A: You cannot work on your boat in the dry stack, but we have a ‘tinkering rack’ outdoors where you have access to water and electric. Once your work is done, we will simply return the boat to the dry stack. Q: CAN I LEAVE MY BOAT AFLOAT? A: As a berth holder at Yacht Haven Quay Plymouth, you will receive seven days free berthing at our sister-site Plymouth Yacht Haven. It is just a couple of minutes downstream.

ORIGINAL PRINCESS AT BRITISH MOTOR YACHT SHOW THE first model ever built by Princess Yachts International is to be on show at the British Motor Yacht Show from 19 - 21 May at Swanwick Marina. Project 31 made her UK debut at last year’s London Boat Show following a unique restoration project in celebration of the company’s 50th Anniversary. Over the years several modifications and upgrades have been made to the 31ft cruiser. Key features have been restored to pay tribute to the 1965 original launch specification, including the original Volvo Penta control panel, which has been given a new lease of life with the support of a modern automation system. A new level of luxury has also been injected into the living space with the use of modern materials and detail-oriented craftsmanship. From hand-turned polished stainless-steel doorknobs and bathroom

accessories to hand-sewn upholstery and 1960s inspired fluting and embroidery completing the finish. Visitors to the show will also get to see ‘a world first’ new Princess at the show, a superb range of brand new Sunseekers and a sneak preview of a long awaited new Fairline that will be launched at Cannes.

OPEN WEEKEND

ARTY’S is a new café on the waterfront at Clarence Marina. This new eaterie is bright and modern but with a quirky, eclectic décor that sets it apart. It is a treasure trove of ‘arty’ things. The manager Julie and her team make you feel welcome and relaxed. Julie’s father, Paul Malec, founded the original Arty’s, which is in Knowle, near Fareham. We like the look of the mushroom ravioli with sage and

lemon butter at £7.50, the pork and chorizo sausages with creamy mustard mash and onion gravy at £8.95 or the hot smoked salmon salad with new potatoes and asparagus at £8.50. Arty’s can cater for groups and one-off events. You will find it in Salt Meat Lane, Gosport. n Opening hours: n Monday – Saturday 12:00 – 23:00pm n Sunday 12:00 -22:30pm n www.artysclarencemarina.co.uk

SOUTHSEA MARINA HOST FISHING SHOW

There will be a main exhibitor marquee with a local presence from Andy’s Baits Angling Centre, Allan’s Marine and Solent Tackle who will be selling a selection of tackle, bait, rods and lures. By the main tent a line-up of fishing boats will be on display from Sea Ventures, Sussex Boat Shop, JBT Marine, RBS Marine and boat builder Garry Bull, including a 695 Marlin, a Beneteau Barracuda 7, Parker and Rodman boat models and a brand of Ocean kayaks that come fully rigged. Portsmouth Marine Training RYA Training Centre is exhibiting and LGS Marine will be on hand with the newest safety equipment. FRIB (Foldable RIB) will showcase an innovative designed foldout RIB for sea anglers and Wade Marine will be unveiling a rope-handling device that makes mooring up a simple, stress free task. As well as the opportunity to buy top fish finding and navigation equipment from Landau UK and a comprehensive range of outboards from Golden Arrow, visitors can drop in from 9am to pick up some bargains at the marina boat jumble and have their life jacket checked for free by the RNLI. UNCONSCIOUS CASUALTY

“Every year in the UK, thousands of people die or are seriously injured in incidents. Many deaths could be prevented i first aid is given before emergency services arrive.”

IN THIS SERIES ALL AT SEA IS SPOTLIGHTING CHAPTERS FROM FIRST AID COMPANION TO GIVE BOATERS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TO DO IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. 1

3. With your other hand grasp the leg furthest away from you just above the knee and pull it up keeping the foot on the ground. With your hand on the knee pull this leg towards you to roll the casualty on their side.

No response? - open the airway and check that breathing is present. Breathing but unconscious? - place in recovery position. 1. Kneel next to the casualty. Straighten their legs. Quickly remove their spectacles and empty pockets. Place the arm closest to you out at right angles to the body with the elbow bent and the palm uppermost. 2. Bring the casualty’s opposite arm across their chest. Hold the back of the casualty’s hand against their cheek with your own palm. Do not let go. This hand supports the head as the casualty is turned.

4. Tilt the head back to make sure the airway remains open. The casualty’s hand may be adjusted under the cheek to support the head or a pillow may be used. Adjust the upper leg so the hip and knee are at right angles.

2

5. Check breathing every one to two minutes. If the casualty is not breathing, roll them on to their back and commence resuscitation.

6. If the casualty has to be kept in the recovery position for more than 30 minutes, turn them to the opposite side to relieve pressure on the lower arm. 7. Never leave an unconscious casualty alone unless it is necessary in order to raise the alarm. Cover them to prevent heat loss and protect from the environment as needed. 8. Do not move the casualty unless they are in danger as this may cause them further harm. 9. Assess the casualty for signs of injury or possible cause of the unconsciousness, and monitor their pulse.

Splash proof and ring bound, First Aid Companion is a handy reference guide covering all the key topics surrounding first aid afloat. The book contains all the topics to be featured in this series, plus more, and although it should not be seen as a replacement for completing a first aid course, it could really help to make the difference if you find yourself in a potentially harmful or life-threatening situation at sea. WINE OF CHOICE

BY PAUL ANTROBUS

Club and house wines, always a safe choice.

Editorial Director Bob Satchwell bob@allatsea.co.uk

GIVE THESE A TRY

What follows are a few suggestions from my own house wine committee, but we would love to hear your favourites too. Waitrose Reserve Claret AOP Vin de Bordeaux, bottled 2015, 13 per cent, £5.99 for 75cl, from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, fresh with notes of blackcurrants and plums. Waitrose Bordeaux Blanc AOP, 12 per cent, £5.75, made from Semillon and Sauvignon blanc grapes from Arcachon on the coast. This is oyster farming territory, hence the oyster shell on the label, so we can expect this wine to go well with seafood. Crisp notes of gooseberries and green apples. From Sainsbury’s House range, appellation contrôlée Côtes du Rhône, 14 per cent, £4.60 for 75cl bottle, light and fruity and good value for this type of wine. And, just for fun, Les Rosbifs Vin de Pays d’Oc IGP Shiraz 2015, 13 per cent, £5.99 from Sainsbury’s. ‘Rosbifs’, of course, is the French nickname for the English (just as we call the French ‘Frogs’), allegedly originating as a derogatory joke about how the English love and cook their Sunday roast. The label sports a knife and fork sketch and says, predictably, that it is “the perfect match for a good old fashioned Sunday lunch”. Bon Appétit, as we say in England.

THE Club Claret or Club White feature on the wine list of many clubs, yachting or otherwise. A Vin de Pays Maison is a likely offer in restaurants and gastro pubs, sub-named by a particular French region or town and a grape variety. Not always the cheapest but somehow suggesting a safe, value-for-money wine, researched and chosen by the club wine committee or the restaurant ‘patron’. We are all familiar with the French system for classifying wine, the Appellation d’Origine Contrôllée based on geographical location and grape varieties. The concept dates back to 1411. Using it as a business marketing tool began in earnest in 1905. While this seemed a good thing to safeguard quality and orderly business for the French wine industry, especially for exports, ‘new world’ wines from other continents were gaining market share,

based on new tastes and character. The strict AOC rules made responding with new French creations impossibly slow. The very French response was a much more flexible new classification, Vin de Pays, passed into law in 1979. In 2009 Indication Géographique Protégé and Appellation d’Origine Protégée options were added, giving even more flexibility for a new generation of wine makers. Because innovation is consumer led, some Vin de Pays wines are now considered better or command higher prices than AOC wines.

VIN DE PAYS REGIONS

There are four main Vin de Pays regions: Val de Loire, Pays d’Oc (the southern France Langedoc-Roussillon area), the slopes of the Rhône for Côtes de Rhône and Beaujolais and Comté Tolosan centred on Toulouse.

For all of these there are many sub-classifications by grape type or specific location or ‘terroir’. Why then Club Claret? Claret is the British name for a red Bordeaux wine, exclusively red, exclusively Bordeaux. The term began 200 years ago as a nickname used by English traders of the day, probably derived from ’clear’ or ‘light’ to describe the wine. With dozens to choose from, leaving this to the club committee or a trusted restaurant patron seems like a good idea to me. It is not a cop-out treat it as delegated responsibility.
