FROM PAGE 1… New research by the RYA shows that a quarter of people have never tried an outdoor pursuit, yet two in four want to be more active and nearly a third want to get more fresh air. The good news is there has never been a better time to get out on the water and give sailing and windsurfing a go. RYA Push the Boat Out is back and this time for the whole of May with free sailing and windsurfing taster sessions for everyone across the UK. Last year more than 30,000 people took to the water at venues up and down the country and over 7,500 signed up for more activities, with many becoming members of their local clubs.

“We are delighted that Push the Boat Out is running for the whole of May,” said RYA Director of Sport Development, Alistair Dickson. “This year it will be bigger than ever before with almost 400 venues hosting events. So, if you are looking for something completely different to do with the family, a workout in the fresh air or perhaps to get back out on the water after having a break, then pop down to your local sailing club or centre during May and ‘Push the Boat Out’.” All kit and safety equipment is provided and no experience is needed. THE 2018 Round the Island Race in association with Cloudy Bay will take place on 7 July. The Round the Island Race is not just aimed at elite sailors and the organisers promote wider participation from sailors of all generations and experience levels. As a result, this year’s race brings with it the #ItsYourRace campaign, encouraging competitors to create their own ‘race within the race’. Using the tracker, competitors can select individual boats to follow and race against, increasing

the competitive element within the 1,600 strong fleet. This will run alongside the long-standing message of the race, #RaceForAll. It has never been easier to enter as any competitor that has raced in the event within the past three years will not be required to re-enter their boat details, thereby saving a great deal of time. The New York Yacht Club and Bella Mente Quantum Racing Association have announced they will compete under the name New York Yacht Club American Magic in their challenge for the 36th America’s Cup, to be held in New Zealand in 2021. Philip Lotz, Commodore of the New York Yacht Club, said, “America was the first boat to win the America’s Cup in 1851. Magic was the first boat to defend the Cup in 1870. American Magic builds on the legacy of those two yachts, and the name embodies the mission of our campaign, which is to win the Cup and in the process build the foundation for a stronger competitive sailing culture in the United States.” Turn to page 10 for more America’s Cup news.

OLYMPIC SAILING

The qualification system for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing Competition has been published. This system is used to determine which nations will compete in each of the 10 events, with each advancing nation to then determine the sailor(s) to represent them in those events. The Tokyo Olympic Sailing Competition will be held in July/August 2020 out of Enoshima Yacht Harbour, also the venue for Sailing’s World Cup Series event this September, and will feature 350 athletes racing in 250 boats. As hosts, Japan receives automatic entry into each event. www.sailing.org

The upcoming edition of the Barcelona World Race, due to start on the 12 January 2019, has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship and political issues. TV personality, presenter and model Jodie Kidd joined skipper Alex Thomson on board the IMOCA 60 race boat HUGO BOSS off the coast of Portsmouth. Jodie is known for her love of high octane sports including motor racing and sailing. While Jodie has sailed on a number of occasions, this was the first time she has ever sailed at speed on an IMOCA 60 race boat, an experience which she said she “absolutely loved”. With the help of Alex and his team, Jodie was guided through the functionalities of the race boat, as well as being given a tour of HUGO BOSS, in which he eats, sleeps and races during his epic round-the-world races. Alex said: “It was great having Jodie with us out on the water on board HUGO BOSS. She took the whole experience in her stride, even when we reached a top speed of 31 knots. It was a great afternoon and we are looking forward to welcoming her back on board again soon.”

D-DAY MUSEUM

The D-Day Story, in Portsmouth, formerly the D-Day Museum, has reopened following a £5m revamp. Three new exhibition galleries, a cafe and shop have been created at the museum. Work included conserving items such as an 83m Overlord Embroidery. The museum received £4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the renovations with the work carried out ahead of the 75th anniversary of D-Day next year when a series of events are planned.

JOSHUA STAYS IN FRANCE

By Jane Hyde WHAT are your plans for May? Although we had some late snow this year – as shown on this month’s Photo of the Month page – winter is now a distant memory and it is wonderful to be out and about on the water. The whole of May is now the RYA’s Push the Boat Out, and so is the perfect time if you are thinking of taking to the water for the first time, or know someone who is considering it. With so many free events around the country there will be a venue near you. Let us know how you get on! Push the Boat Out aside, take a look at our summer events guide on page 28 for a huge number of fantastic shows, festivals and regattas to take part in, or simply go along and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere and entertainment. My diary is already filling up fast. Looking ahead, two of the events listed, the Golden Globe Race and Round the Island Race, will feature in special previews in next month’s All at Sea. It was sad to read that Bernard Moitessier’s boat Joshua is unable to take part in the UK celebrations ahead of the French start of the Golden Globe Race, but I am sure it will not diminish the excitement surrounding the build-up in Falmouth. Perhaps you arrange your holidays around attending specific regattas like the GGR and Round the Island Race, but if you are looking for a new destination this year check out this month’s holidays on page 31. We have been looking at where to go based on your skill level. There are ideas that will take you as far as the Whitsundays, but plenty staying closer to home in Europe too.

Many of us choose to stay in the UK, and why not with such wonderful scenery, sailing waters and marinas. Scotland is a favourite for many boaters, and if you like the idea of visiting the Firth of Clyde this year our cruising guide will show you the top 10 places to visit including the Isle of Arran and Largs. For some boaters, though, a week or two away simply is not enough. That was true for Irenka Griffin and her husband Woody. They made a pact to one day sail the world together and, with their three children, they are now doing just that. Read the first part of their inspirational story on page 22. If you are thinking about doing a similar adventure we would love to hear from you. Plastic pollution remains in the news with the announcement, for example, that Costa is pledging to recycle half a billion disposable cups a year by 2020. This would be a significant proportion of the 2.5 billion takeaway cups thrown away across the country every year. Then, on the scientific front, we heard that scientists accidentally created a mutant enzyme that breaks down plastic drinks bottles. It does not matter how it came about, if it works and can be used to tackle the problem of plastic recycling we are all for it. You can read more about the state of our seas due to plastic pollution on page eight. Needless to say the problem is growing, and worse than first thought. WITH the 1 July start fast approaching, pressure is building for competitors to complete qualifying distances and preparations for the Golden Globe Race. American Carl Huber has been forced to withdraw from the race but is keeping his options open to compete in 2022. For Carl, who sold his house to compete, time simply ran out. Cost overruns in preparing his Baba 35 Jamma Jeanne forced him to withdraw. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is preparing his yacht Suhaili to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his departure from Falmouth at the start of the original Golden Globe race back in 1968, during a three-day jamboree between 11 – 14 June.

One noticeable absentee among the historic yachts scheduled to attend, is Joshua, the yacht that French hero Bernard Moitessier sailed in the same race. Now a national treasure, her movements are strictly controlled and government officials have not given permission for her to sail outside of French waters. None are more disappointed than the Friends of Joshua, the group who maintain and sail the yacht as a working museum display in La Rochelle – so much so that they are sailing over in their own boats to join in the celebrations. Joshua’s place alongside Suhaili at the head of the Parade of Sail around

Falmouth Harbour on 14 June will now be taken up by Sir Francis Chichester’s Gipsy Moth IV, the yacht that proved for the first time that small boats can survive in the Southern Ocean. Chichester went on to become the first to make a solo onestop circumnavigation. Gipsy Moth will also mark the leeward end of the line at the start of the SITRaN Challenge race from Falmouth to Les Sables d’Olonne starting straight after the Parade of Sail. STRANGE VESSEL Dear All at Sea Just a short note to say how much we enjoyed April’s half page spread regarding Mariquita, just a shame she is at present laid up. The comments from Jim Thorn were very interesting and as we live in Eastleigh, Lymington it is not that far, so we can pop down and see her, even ashore she will still look the thoroughbred she is. The ‘strange vessel’ in the photo of the month in April is in fact Sailing Yacht A, owned by one of the many rich Russian gentlemen that have become yacht owners over the last few years. We saw this yacht in Gibraltar last September; she motored in and was tied up at the next quayside to us. We were on the Queen Elizabeth at the time. This yacht, when launched, was the largest in the world. She was designed by Gerry Dykstra in Amsterdam, if my memory serves me correct. The same owner also owns a large and again uniquely styled motor yacht called Motor Yacht A, obviously. Best regards Ken and Evelyn

SAILOR CRUSHED BY OWN BOAT A 56-year-old sailor, Kevin Keeler, died at Weymouth Sailing Club in Dorset when his 29ft boat fell on him while he was carrying out repairs. Paramedics were called to the consultant software engineer, but were unable to save him. Euan NcNair, commodore of Weymouth Sailing Club, said: “It is with much regret that I can confirm that there was a serious accident at

Weymouth Sailing Club involving a boat in storage ashore and a single person who unfortunately died at the scene.” It is thought the boat was undergoing two weeks of maintenance, including minor repairs, at the time of the accident, which is being investigated by The Health and Safety Executive who are working with the police.

GOOD TIMES AHEAD THERE was good news for the marine industry with the announcement that watersports participation has increased by 3.4 per cent, reaching the highest volume since the Watersports Participation Survey was first undertaken in 2002. According to the research, a record 3.96m UK adults (7.4 per cent of the UK adult population) participated in one or more of 12 core boating activities in 2017. Also, despite challenges to consumer confidence and an unsettled economy in the wake of Brexit negotiations, boat ownership has also increased, with more than 690,000 boat owning households in the UK. Canoeing and motorboating saw the largest increases in participation, with growths of 345,000 and 186,000 respectively. The popularity of stand-up paddleboarding is also holding strong, with an additional 190,000 participants over the last year. In total, more than 16.3

million people participated in any waterbased leisure activities. With an increase of over two million more participants in 2017, it is the highest volume of participants recorded since the survey began. Howard Pridding, Chief Executive Officer at British Marine, said: “It is really encouraging to see this level of growth in boating and watersports participation and our members will particularly welcome the increase in the proportion of boat owning households. “There are so many great ways to get out on and enjoy the water in and around the UK. The continuing popularity of activities like stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing are proof of just how easy it is to get involved in on-water activities. And the growth in sailing, motorboating and canal boating is excellent news for our boatbuilders and hire boat companies. “Like all recreational sectors, the boating market does face challenges from an ageing population and growing competition for people’s time and finances. THE British Sailing Team bagged a quartet of silver medals to add to the haul started by Giles Scott’s early Finn class victory at the Princess Sofia Trophy. Runner-up spots went to Alison Young in the Laser Radial, Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell in the 49er, women’s 470 duo Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre and Nacra 17 pair Ben Saxton and Nicola Boniface as the week-long regatta concluded in trademark tricky Palma conditions. It is a timely boost for the British Sailing Team as it geared up to the next round of the World Cup Series in Hyeres, France, followed by the biggest test of the year – the Hempel Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, in August. Rio 216 champion Scott went into the Finn medal race – a double pointsscoring clash for the top 10 sailors – with an unassailable 29-point lead and the gold already secure. He sealed the deal by finishing fifth to notch up his third back-to-back victory since returning to international competition six months ago.

NEWS SNAPS MEDINA YARD

The Harrison Trust’s plans to develop Medina Yard in Cowes have been approved by the Isle of Wight Council Planning Authority. At the planning hearing strong objections were raised by CHC and harbour stakeholders. However, the application was approved on the condition that phases one and four of the development run parallel to preserve the marine industry at the site. This means that the creation of the marine employment space (phase 4) will have to be given full planning permission before any work can begin at the site.

NO PLASTIC FREE SEAS MICROPLASTICS are often invisible to the naked eye and can take thousands of years to degrade. By collecting information on their levels scientists can gain an insight into the scale of plastic pollution and its impact upon marine life. Scientific research, using data collected by the Volvo Race team Turn the Tide on Plastic, has identified 75 particles of microplastics per cubic metre in waters near Hong Kong and 87 along the coast near Melbourne. Lower concentrations of 39 microplastic particles were found up the east coast of Australia and 48 particles were found in South East Asian waters. The highest levels of microplastic so far have been found in European waters where the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet. A peak of 307 particles of microplastics per cubic metre was discovered there. The tiny particles of plastic, which break down from larger pieces such as single-use plastic bottles, were collected by Turn the Tide on Plastic using a state-of-the-art instrument during the round the world race. AkzoNobel are the second team to have signed up to the Volvo Ocean Race Science Programme, helping capture valuable data from the remotest parts of our seas.

The oceanographic data will provide important direct measurements to increase knowledge and future insights into ocean health and climate predictions. Anne-Cecile Turner, Sustainability Programme Leader for the Volvo Ocean Race, said: “We know very little about exactly how much microplastic is contaminating our oceans so each new data sample is providing valuable information to further our scientific knowledge. “The Volvo Ocean Race provides an exceptional opportunity to directly sample remote areas and to shed light on the global scale and geographical distribution of microplastics pollution in the ocean.” Dr Paulo Mirpuri, President of Volvo Ocean Race Principal Sustainability Partner, The Mirpuri Foundation said: “We were not expecting microplastic to be found in the most remote areas of our seas like the Southern Ocean. “This came as a complete surprise to us, the dream that we would still have pristine and plastic free seas somewhere in this planet is gone and means the problem is a lot bigger than our initial assumptions. BROOM STOPS BOAT BUILDING

HUGE GARBAGE PATCH

BROOM, Britain’s oldest boat builder, is to stop boat building. The company, which dates back to 1898, blamed low customer demand, overseas competition and rising costs. Group sales manager Greg Houlston explained: “This has led to a strategic decision to focus on the growing leisure part of their operations and to discontinue boat building.” The company has 21 boats in its holiday hire fleet and intends to expand further. In addition there are plans to continue to develop Broom Marina and the service, maintenance and repairs side of the business. The changes will lead to the loss of up to 20 jobs.

IT has been reported that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, situated between California and Hawaii, is growing fast. Predictions are putting it at 80,000 tonnes of plastic, which is up to 16 times higher than had been previously reported. Although plastic builds up in different ocean areas, the patch between the two American states is the largest. Laurent Lebreton of The Ocean Cleanup Foundation in Delft, Netherlands, which led the study, said: “Plastic concentration is increasing - I think the situation is getting worse. This really highlights the urgency to take action in stopping the in-flow of plastic into the ocean and also taking measures to clean up the existing mess.” Microplastics accounted for eight per cent of the total mass of plastic afloat within an area of 1.6 million square km and 94 per cent of the estimated 1.8 trillion pieces floating in the area. It is not just microplastics, though, with larger items such as toys and fishing nets also found. Suggestions for why estimates are

PILOT RESTORATION

A new project has started to resurrect a Falmouth Pilot Cutter Ship, rejuvenating some of the traditional skills of wooden ship-building as a community programme. AC75 CLASS RULE REVEALED THE Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Circolo della Vela Sicilia, together with their respective teams Emirates Team New Zealand and the Challenger of Record - Luna Rossa, have published the AC75 Class Rule for the 36th America’s Cup. Highlights of the AC75 Class Rule include:  Strict limitations on the number of components that can be built including hulls, masts, rudders, foils and sails, thus encouraging teams to do more R&D in simulation and subsequently less physical construction and testing  Supplied foil arms and cant system to save design time and construction costs  Supplied rigging  One design mast tube The ‘soft wing’ mainsail concept that has been developed for the AC75 Class Rule is expected to have a trickle-down effect on sailing in the future.

Qingdao claimed its first victory in the Mighty Pacific Leg 6 of the Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race, a 5,600nm marathon from Qingdao to Seattle, USA. THE America’s Cup TV coverage in Bermuda, led by New Zealander Denis Harvey, has been nominated for three Emmy Awards. The 35th America’s Cup is among 28 programs being recognised at the 39th Annual Sports Emmy Awards. The event received nominations

in the categories of Outstanding Technical Team Remote, Outstanding Live Event Audio/Sound and George Wensel Technical Achievement Award. Nominees will be honored during a ceremony on 8 May at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.

AMERICA’S CUP VENUE AGREED AN agreement has been struck on the Auckland waterfront venue that will host the 36th America’s Cup, including the division of costs and the payment of a hosting fee. New Zealand Economic Development Minister David Parker said: “I am very pleased to advise that we have succeeded in negotiating a venue on the Auckland waterfront that all New Zealanders can be proud of. It significantly reduces the intrusion into the harbour at the lowest practical cost.” The location, known as WynyardHobson, has evolved from several options on the table. It entails only about 6,600 metre² intrusion into the harbour at Hobson Wharf, compared to 9,900 metre² under the earlier Point Halsey option. Emirates Team New Zealand will occupy the Viaduct Events Centre, while Luna Rossa will be offered the place on the extended Hobson Wharf. The remaining bases will be located on Wynyard Wharf. The expected contributions are $114 million from the Crown including a $40 million host contribution fee and $98.5million from Auckland Council. The agreement details the timing of three events. They are the America’s Cup Christmas Race December 2020, the America’s Cup Challenger Selection Series in January - February 2021 and the 36th America’s Cup match in March 2021. www.americascup.com

POWERFUL PARTNERS An international powerboat race, which comes to Falmouth from June 29 to July 1, has announced a partnership with a sailing charity for injured veterans. The International Powerboat Race Club will join together with Falmouthbased Turn to Starboard to raise funds for those affected by military operations. On 30 June competitors will race two laps of a course from Falmouth to Plymouth and back – a total of 144 miles. A fleet of 20 boats will assemble at Mayflower Marina before departing on 3 June for Portugal. BRITISH sailor John Fisher lost his life after going overboard during Leg 7 of the Volvo Ocean Race from Auckland, New Zealand to Itajaí, Brazil. The incident took place approximately 1,400 miles west of Cape Horn. Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag, along with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, conducted a search and rescue operation to recover the sailor, who was wearing survival equipment when he went overboard. When the accident occurred John Fisher was on deck, in the cockpit. At the time, he was moving forward to tidy up the FR0 sheet and had therefore unclipped his tether. As the mainsail swung across the boat in the gybe, the mainsheet system caught John and knocked him off the boat. The crew on board believe John was

unconscious from the blow before he hit the water. Given the gale force conditions it was not an option to divert any of the other six Volvo Ocean Race competitors, who were at least 200 miles further east and downwind of SHK/Scallywag, to assist in the search operation. Richard Brisius, the President of the Volvo Ocean Race, said: “The Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag team conducted an exhaustive search for several hours in extremely challenging weather conditions, but they were unable to recover their teammate. “The crew is, of course, emotionally and physically drained after what they have just experienced. Our sole focus now is to provide all the support and assistance that we can to the team. “All of us here at the Volvo Ocean Race organisation send our heartfelt condolences out to John’s family, his friends and his teammates and we will do everything in our power to support them in this very difficult time.” Five boats finished Leg 7, with Team Brunel taking the win and scoring maximum points, followed by Dongfeng Race Team and team AkzoNobel. Dee Caffari’s Turn the Tide on Plastic finished fourth. Two teams retired from the leg, Team SHK/Scallywag following the loss of John Fisher, and Vestas 11th Hour Racing following a dismasting south of the Falkland Islands. CLASSIC COWES COWES Classics Week has grown strongly since its inaugural regatta and has in recent years been welcoming just shy of 200 yachts, all of whom meet the qualification of being built to designs drawn up before 1978 or in the spirit of tradition. For the classes, which include classic cruisers, XODs, Darings, Dragons, Solent Sunbeams, Swallows, Old Gaffers and other classic keelboat designs, the week will provide thrilling Solent race courses and evening entertainment. The afternoon teas, sponsored by Winkworth, for which the organising club, the Royal London Yacht Club is famous, will be available once again. The Royal Victoria YC, Cowes Corinthian YC and the Island Sailing Club are all opening their doors for social events while the RORC and the Royal Thames YC are helping on the water.

For the first time competitors will also be able to visit the Classic Boat Museum at its new West Cowes location for a post-racing reception and supper. While there they can inspect some of the most iconic boats ever produced. Boater have been banned from emptying their toilets and waste water in harbours in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey Coble Landing and may be asked to put dye tablets in their toilets as a way of stopping them emptying waste into the water.

SUPERYACHT OWNER URGED TO PAY DEBTS NAUTILUS International, the trade union for maritime professionals, is urging the multi-millionaire owner of one of the world’s largest private yachts to urgently pay more than $1m of wages owed to crew members following a court hearing. A civil court in Malta ordered Vijay Mallya, owner of the 95m vessel Indian Empress, to pay more than € 650,000 owed to a local marine services company for fuel supplied to the Isle of Manflagged superyacht. The court upheld the claim, ordering the settlement of the € 651,399.77 bill with accrued interest until effective payment.

The yacht has been abandoned in Malta since September last year and Nautilus has had the vessel arrested as part of its efforts to recover unpaid wages for 24 members. The Union has already secured more than US$615,000 under the ‘safety net’ provisions of the Maritime Labour Convention, but is seeking to enforce a maritime lien for the payment of outstanding wages and other costs over and above those covered by the MLC. The Indian government is seeking the extradition of Mr Mallya – whose business interests have spanned Kingfisher beer, Kingfisher Airlines and

the Force India Formula One team – from the UK amid allegation of debts totalling more than € 1bn. Nautilus strategic organiser Danny McGowan said: “It is disappointing to see that despite being presented with facts about his debts, the owner is facing formal court action to force him to pay what is owed. “Unfortunately, his failure to pay crew properly is not reserved only for the vessel in Malta, either. Another of his vessels, the motor yacht Force India - currently based in Southampton - still owes a number of Nautilus members outstanding sums for

their hard work on board the vessel. Force India is smaller than the Indian Empress, but the impact on the hard-working seafarers is the same, with many relying on support from family members to be able to pay their own bills. “Nautilus calls on Mr Mallya to resolve the situation speedily for his loyal crews on board Indian Empress and Force India by paying them their outstanding wages without waiting for the courts to order the settlement,” he added.

The Canal & River Trust’s annual national boat count shows that licence evasion on its waterways is at its lowest-ever level, with 96.9 per cent of boats holding up-to-date licences. Jon Horsfall, interim head of boating at The Canal & River Trust, said: It is important that boats are licensed correctly. Not only does this mean they are insured and hold a boat safety certificate, but it means they are playing their part in contributing to the huge task of keeping our canals and rivers open. The income from boat licensing is crucial – in 2017/18 leisure licences contributed £20.2m, around 10 per cent of total income.”

HMS FORTH FORMALLY COMMISSIONED

HMS Forth, the first of the Royal Navy’s next-generation of Offshore Patrol ships, has been formally commissioned into the Fleet. Held at her home base of Portsmouth, the commissioning ceremony for HMS Forth represents the second ship to join the Royal Navy in less than six months. After the aircraft carrier HMS Queen

Elizabeth in December, HMS Forth is the next generation of warships to arrive as part of the government’s £178bn plan to give the Armed Forces the equipment it believes it needs over the next decade. She is the first of five new Offshore Patrol Vessels designed for counterpiracy, anti-smuggling, fishery protection, border patrol, counter terrorism and maritime defence duties. The remaining four ships are all expected to arrive in Portsmouth by 2020. They will become the Royal Navy’s eyes and ears around the UK, helping to safeguard fishing stocks, reassure and protect the Falkland Islands and are capable of deploying to the Mediterranean and Caribbean to safeguard the UK’s interests around the world.

WITH 1,500 J/70s worldwide, the fast planing sportsboat is the quickest growing one design class in sailing, and with 49 boats racing in the 2017 UK fleet, it is one of the largest in the world. The 2018 UK regatta schedule will provide thrilling one-design racing on short courses with multi-race days but with one significant change. The major UK events will combine to form the J/70 Class UK Grand Slam Series. The best five event results will decide the overall winner in professional and Corinthian classes with the top teams qualifying for the 2019 J/70 World Championship, which will be hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. “The Grand Slam Series will decide the 20 slots for the 2019 J/UK Worlds,” said J/70 UK Class Captain, Hannah Le Prevost. “The overall aim is to expand and encourage the UK fleet and improve the performance of the teams. We see this as an

18 month programme, including winter training, running into the 2019 J/70 Worlds. Every team will have to qualify through the series to compete at Torbay next year. We aspire to take on the world’s best J/70 teams, with everybody working together in the UK Class.” Nine events form the J/70 UK Class Grand Slam series, culminating in the presentation of two trophies, for the winner and the Corinthian winner. Teams must compete at five events to qualify, including the non-discardable National Championships. The first event of the J/70 UK Grand Slam Series took place over 21 - 22 April as part of the Spring Series organised by Warsash SC. THIS month’s Northern Boat Show has announced a line-up of inland and offshore boats that can fit any budget and can even help you find a berth for your boat and teach you how to sail it. The show takes place from 25 - 28 May at Liverpool’s Salthouse Dock to coincide with the Mersey River Festival and Tall Ships Liverpool 2018 and includes sailing boats such as the Capecutter 19 and Character Post Boat along with motorboats such as the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 695, Beneteau Antares 8 and Flyer 7. New for 2018 will be a range of brokerage boats from Bluepoint Marine. There will also be exhibitors on the land displaying boating products and services such

as sailing courses, watersports equipment and marinas. Liverpool will be transformed into three cultural festivals – Liverpool Festival in the city centre, Irish Festival at the Albert Dock and French Festival on the Pier Head, each with their own unique atmosphere and cultural experience. Expect spectacular performances, street animation and live music, as Liverpool’s waterfront is transformed. A huge fleet of tall ships is also expected with around one million spectators flocking to the waterfront. FAREWELL SQUADRON 78 THE last of Fairline Yachts’ range topping Squadron 78 luxury motor yachts has left the Oundle, Northamptonshire factory. The flybridge yacht finished its production run to make way for an even larger new flagship Fairline model, to be built at Fairline’s new production facilities in Southampton. The Squadron 78 has been in production for 15 years with 115 built in that time. LIA GOES SOLO LIA Ditton, who featured in March’s Boating People, is attempting to become the first woman and only the third person to row solo across the North Pacific. She will attempt the world-record row from Japan to San Francisco in April 2019. Award-winning naval architect Jim Antrim is designing a new cutting-edge ocean rowing boat for the attempt. The new boat by Antrim Designs will be lighter, faster and, perhaps most importantly, safer than Ditton’s existing training boat. It will be easier to propel through the water, less likely to be severely damaged in the event of a capsize and capable of withstanding the tough conditions expected during the 5000nm crossing.

With safety a primary concern, Lia is also supported by safety at sea specialist Ocean Signal as the Project Safety Sponsor. Licensed captain Ditton, 36, has more than 150,000nm of experience and has competed in some of the world’s most challenging ocean races. She was the only woman to complete the OSTAR 2005 single-handed transatlantic race, finished second in the Route du Rhum, France’s most-prestigious, single-handed transatlantic race, captained the boat from the film Waterworld, became the 53rd woman to row the Atlantic and the 64th woman to row any ocean and project managed the largest solar-powered boat in the world. www.rowliarow.com

As happens to so many yachtsmen and women, the time came to hang up the sailing gear and move over to motor. That is what we did as I reached 80 and my wife’s MS made sailing too difficult. We had a succession of Newbridge sailing boats from Coromandel to Pioneer, which we cruised for many years from Poole to the Solent and beyond, so what next? Realising we no longer needed the trappings of a cruiser, cooker with oven, more than two berths and heavy weather gear to potter about Poole Harbour and approaches, we bought a Seaward 19ft launch. But ours is not the basic working launch seen in the company’s brochure. Realising that part of Seaward’s marketing policy is to cater for the requirements of individual buyers we sat down with their designers and came up with a boat that meets our needs.

The addition of a cover over the cockpit, anchor windlass and self-stowing anchor (I can hear the sailors tittering) were basic additions. The important extras for us were not expensive, most were free, but made all the difference in enabling Jane to board the boat, be safe while on it and disembark safely too. Simple things like steps inside to get up to the gunwales, in and out of the wheelhouse and to get into the navigator’s chair. Plus we asked for grab rails for both hands - to get on and off the boat on to her mobility scooter broadside on to the wide pontoon in the Port of Poole Marina - and ample grab rails by the wheelhouse door, navigator’s seat and loo. Jane and I have had the boat for 18 months now and have thoroughly enjoyed it and found those interesting shallow channels in Poole Harbour a delight for picnicking and just watching the sailing world go by. POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTH’S ENGINE NEWS. THE ear to the ground has heard that Tohatsu have no more of their 90hp Big Foot outboards. The Honda built engines were painted dark blue by Tohatsu and sold through the Tohatsu dealership network, but sadly they have come to the end of the line. However, better news is that Tohatsu Marine Ltd have celebrated the sale of four million units worldwide. This cumulative landmark total gives an indication of just how significant a player Tohatsu is in the outboard market. In readiness for this new period in the history of Tohatsu they have expanded into new premises on the Ampress industrial estate in Lymington. In keeping with this new era Tohatsu have a new logo and a new strap line, Feel the wind, which you will see echoed across their brochures and marketing material.

NEW RANGE

Looking to the future, they are developing their own range of four higher output outboards, which should be market ready in time for the 2019 season. I would expect to see at least a prototype or mock up engine possibly by the time of the Southampton show in September. The most recent unveiling is of their all new lightweight outboard engine. The 333cc twin cylinder unit is rated at three popular outputs, 9.9hp, 15hp and 20hp, from the same capacity. These motors are designated MFS followed by the power rating and the suffix E for the latest version taking over from the 351cc model D. They are lighter, livelier, more economical, produce less vibration, have a stylish new profile and ease of maintenance features built in. The major engine builders are in a constant race to be the lightest, fastest and most powerful, leap-frogging each other by implementing improvements in design as new ideas surface and filter down the ranks from flagship models to the smaller motors. At the moment Tohatsu have a good contender in the MFS E-series having shaved a massive 8.5kgs off the previous D-series variant by attention to detail, but a huge chunk of that weight saving was achieved by changing the design of the cowlings and the material they are made from, shedding a useful 4kgs. Despite having a smaller capacity the new version produces more power than the previous model, not by

much, but a four per cent increase in power from a five per cent decrease in engine size, married with a fuel saving across the board points to some major advancements being incorporated.

MAKING CHANGES

Yamaha did it first, creating the long fresh air intake tract. Of course it is easier to improve than it is to come up with the idea in the first place. The new air intake on the Tohatsu has reduced the intake air by 5 degrees C. A cooler charge and long intake play a big part in increasing the torque within the engine, a torquey motor is more user friendly. Fuel economy is increased by utilising the same, batteryless EFI system from the 40hp and 50hp models. The cylinder head is where the other major changes have been made, optimising the crossflow design and increasing the valve diameter to very close to those of the 50hp engine. In simple terms the engine has been given a healthy pair of lungs for easier breathing. Further attention has been lavished on the piston, reducing the skirt and shedding 25g from each one. Chrome plating has been introduced to reduce the wear rate. The performance and fuel economy are important aspects of any engine but so too is the ‘livability comfort factor’. The tiller handle has been given a makeover, with the gear selector, stop switch and power trim button all now incorporated into the tiller handle to make life easier. Another neat touch is the stowable carry handle, which folds away neatly between the engine mounting brackets. Another aspect that has been addressed is the effort needed to lift the engine up. By moving the centre of gravity closer to the rotational axis by 30mm, 8kgs has been knocked off the lifting effort required. The new engine mounting bracket has also had the effect of increasing the available steering angle by 20-degrees, for better manoevrability. This portable sector of the outboard market is a highly important one, as it applies to the small boat user, tenders and as an auxiliary outboard, either as backup or as the docking engine for many sailing boats. It would appear that Tohatsu have come up with a real gem in the MFS range. They are already available from Tohatsu dealers around the country.

TELL US ABOUT THE BOAT YOU WILL BE SAILING.

I have a Rustler 36. I got her two years ago especially for this. She has just undergone a major refit, so is like a new boat now. A lot of major modifications were made during the refit to prepare her for the Southern Ocean and also to comply with race rules. So there are now two bulkheads, one fitted with a watertight door and the forward one cuts off the bow section and is foam filled. A solid spray hood and completely watertight companion way hatch are just a few of the modifications.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BUILD-UP TO THE RACE?

Preparations started almost three years ago. First was to get a boat for the race; there is a fairly strict criteria for the type of boat approved for the race. After doing a small initial refit, I set off on a loop of the Atlantic before a major refit, which has taken almost nine months.

WHAT WILL DAY-TO-DAY LIFE BE LIKE ON BOARD?

Sailing and more sailing. Keeping the boat in top condition, navigating, cooking, repairs and so on. Every day is different but the fundamentals like cooking and navigating and sailing are a part of every day.

WHAT KIT WILL YOU BE WEARING?

Being warm and dry are fundamental to sailing in colder climes so I am taking the new Zhik Isotak X Ocean gear and thermals. A warm and dry sailor is a happy sailor.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST FROM HOME (APART FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY)? Vegetables and my bike. I love fresh food so I am really going to miss that, and also just being able to go for a walk or bike ride.

WHAT ELSE IS ON YOUR SAILING ‘TO DO’ LIST – CAN YOU TOP THE GOLDEN GLOBE RACE?

HOW LONG DO YOU EXPECT TO BE AT SEA? It will be approximately nine months.

WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

Probably the length of time I will be alone with no one to talk to.

The list is very long… The GGR is quite a slow race so maybe to do it a little faster next time, or go the other way.

I think preparation and time on the water in the boat you will be competing in are at the top of the priority list. Knowing your boat before the start is crucial, so as much time on the water as possible.

I started sailing when I was a kid with my family, and never really stopped.

GETTING THE KIDS ON BOARD Knowing how to get your youngsters started can be a bit of a mineﬁeld. Here are some fantastic opportunities that will make it easy for you to get your little people out on the water and loving it.

Can you remember the first time you stepped into a boat? As a sailor seeing your children taking their very first steps into the sport can be magical - those moments that plant the seeds we hope will blossom into a love for being out on the water.

GET ONBOARD

A great way to get your youngsters started is through the RYA’s OnBoard programme, the national scheme that introduces eight to 18-year-olds to sailing and windsurfing at more than 225 accredited venues across the country. In the past decade, OB smashed its

target of introducing half a million kids to the sport and continues to provide low cost sailing and windsurfing sessions through schools, youth groups and families. Kids can get afloat for as little as £5 at OB clubs and they use the club’s boats and boards. RYA OnBoard Operations Officer Hannah Cockle explained: “OnBoard is all about connecting youngsters with their local sailing sessions and having the best possible start. “Not only will they make friends and have heaps of fun, they will be taught to sail by experienced instructors. The basics can be learnt easily in a couple

of weeks or over a number of sessions and it does not take long for youngsters to be able to sail around a triangular course on their own.” As well as the physical and mental benefits of having fun in the fresh air, a landmark project between the sailing’s national governing body, the RYA, and Professor Bill Lucas, Professor of Learning at the University of Winchester, identified how sailing nurtures six key life skills and character strengths in young people. These are: confidence, teamwork, communication, determination, independence and creativity. renka and I met while working as flotilla skippers for Neilson Active Holidays. We lived on gyros, beer and good times. We shacked up on various boats and islands around Greece and Croatia and were constantly skint, but life was easy-going, fun and wonderfully irresponsible. But when those two little red lines confirmed Irenka was pregnant our life was about to change, and a return to the UK was inevitable. But not before we had made a pact. We promised one another that no matter what the near future would bring, one day we would sail the world together. An unlikely aspiration for a couple of jobless, hopeless dreamers with a child on the way.

But dreamers can be obstinate people, and although the carefree lifestyle fell by the wayside in the intervening years, the dream smouldered below the surface. It saw us through difficult times in our relationship and gave us a focus and a financial discipline during the chaos of family life, renovating houses and embarking on business startups of varying success. Although we had our hands full, we kept our heads in the clouds and our feet in the sea. We ran an RYA training centre for a number of years and Irenka crewed for the RNLI. She also become the first female beach lifeguard coxswain in Brighton. I tried and failed to reignite a career in the computer games industry so began making industrial style furniture instead. We rented out rooms through AirBnB, sold furniture and crafts through Etsy and became real gig economy advocates. It has to be said that living in Brighton also imbues one with - how can I put this - a somewhat ‘alternative’ outlook on life. We are not particularly superstitious people, but we took the placenta of each child (yup, we had another two!) out to sea and ritually sacrificed it over the side to Poseidon with a drop of rum along with our hopes for the future.

LUCKY CHILD?

Having a third child rarely puts a spring in the step of parents, but our youngest was born with a caul (a piece of the amniotic sac still attached to a newly born baby’s head or face). In medieval times it was believed these lucky children would be protected from death by drowning and their cauls were highly prized by sailors who paid high prices for them and took them to sea as a talisman for protection. Although I said we are not particularly superstitious people, it felt like a kick up the scuttlebutt, so we committed ourselves to our dream with renewed vigour. Our first boat buying attempt in early 2017 nearly ended in disaster. We had saved for more than a decade and finally made an offer on a catamaran anchored in the BVIs, listed by a reputable broker. We commissioned a survey, transferred the requisite deposit through a large trusted bank, then somehow our money disappeared. After 12 frantic weeks of desperation and increasingly shrill communications,

the email from the Yacht Brokers Association of America seemed to confirm our worst fears: “There are many incidents of wire transfer hacking [when buying boats in the Caribbean] where monies have been fraudulently directed to offshore accounts with no chance of recovery. We have no legal authority in this matter.”

DREAM CONTINUES

Then suddenly and inexplicably, the deposit popped back into our bank account barely a week before hurricane Irma trashed every single boat in the anchorage. Maybe it was luck or maybe Poseidon came up trumps after all, but our dream survived by the narrowest of margins.

The trials and tribulations that led us from there to finally setting sail are too numerous to mention, but we are now the owners of a fine 1997, 53’ Amel Super Maramu in Greece and are finally realising our dream. Even though we live on a budget that would be a struggle for most families in the western world, we have exited the rat race for a second time and own our destiny once again. There are obviously a few ‘adaptations’ to be made with young kids in tow. YouTube has become indispensable for homeschooling, maintenance videos and blogging (when we can pick up WiFi) and Minecraft seems as much a part of a child’s life today as Lego was in our day.

Woody and Irenka are currently in Greece living aboard their 1997 53’ Amel Super Maramu - SV Haddock with their three children, Rowan 11, Darroch 8 and Yewan 5. This year they plan to sail the Mediterranean before heading across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and beyond. However, we are living proof that selling up and sailing away is not just the preserve of wealthy retirees, but an achievable goal, even for families with young children. For sure, it is hard work. We have earned every rivet, bolt and split pin on our yacht with blood, sweat, tears and sheer determination. Our yacht may be 20-years-old and she may be in need of restoration and constant repair, but she is now our family home, our school, our workplace and the key to a lifestyle we promised ourselves, all those years ago. Of course we miss our family and friends back home in the UK, but if life’s journey is like writing a book, we want the opening lines of our children’s lives to lay the foundation for an epic odyssey. An unplanned pregnancy may not be the most stable foundation on which to build a dream, but castles in the air and ships on the sea, do not travel very far on terra firma. We will be following 23-year-old Jack Trigger as he works towards competing in the Vendee Globe and challenges to become the next successful British skipper in the race while living with Type 1 Diabetes.

To introduce myself I should rewind back to the beginning. I like sailing, a lot. Although I do not come from a family of sailors I started young; I was six-yearsold when my twin brother and I had our first taste at the local sailing club. Inspired by the Swallows and Amazons tales I was keen to get out on the water, and a murky ex London Brickworks gravel pit was the best we could find close to home. I suppose it is not all that surprising I quickly found the appeal in heading further and further from the shore, in faster and faster boats. I come from a family of adventurers. My parents met through their love of skydiving. My mum was a professional and my dad was in the Parachute Regiment and spent most of his free time enjoying the sport. So here I am, with this strange dream of wanting to sail around the world, alone, non-stop and unassisted, in a rocket ship carbon fibre tub powered by the wind only…

SHOCK DIAGNOSIS

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to make a career out of racing sailboats, to the point that I even left my degree at Oxford University to spend more time on the water. 2015, however, bought with it a whole new shock to the system. I was competing in Sail Arabia the Tour, the famous multistage offshore race around the Arabian Gulf, when I started experiencing some odd symptoms. I had excessive thirst, constant fatigue and I lost 20kgs of bodyweight in three weeks. Naturally, as a stubborn 21-year-old with no serious medical history and none in my immediate family, I put these feelings down to the physical challenges of the race and ignored them. I was put firmly back in my place on my return to the UK when I was rushed into hospital, comatose. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, and told that any long distance offshore sailing was probably a bad idea.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

That summer I skippered the Class 40 Concise 8 to second place in the Rolex Fastnet Race, and a year after my diagnosis I crossed the Atlantic on a 70ft racing trimaran, the MOD 70 Concise 10. It took us just seven days. I have since won line honours in the 2017 Fastnet race, set a new world record for the length of Britain on the IMOCA 60 Artemis 2 and raced with Alex Thomson on Hugo Boss. It is safe to say I will not be held back. This year is the first on my long road to the Vendee Globe, and I will be competing in the Class 40 circuit throughout 2018, culminating in November with the iconic Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race from St Malo, France to Guadeloupe. I will be sharing my experiences in All at Sea in the build-up to the Route du Rhum and beyond. Fambridge River Festival 26 August www.yachthavens.com/ fambriverfest The annual Fambridge River Festival, a celebration of all things maritime on the East Coast, will be held on 26 August with a range of classic, historic and traditional boats opening their hatches to the public. The free event, organised by Fambridge Yacht Haven on the River Crouch, is now in its fourth year with visitors expected to top 1,000 for the first time. A new addition for 2018 will be the addition of a Street Food Village serving food from around the world with a bar and live music.

Round the Island Race 7 July www.roundtheisland.org.uk The annual Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight. The race regularly attracts more than 1,400 boats and around 15,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs. Nearly 200 prizes are awarded for the event, with boats of every shape and size competing to win individual class and overall trophies.

Not too far away from Greece is another popular area for new qualified sailors and those looking for a more tranquil holiday. Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast sees sailors return time and time again to explore the many islands and take in the beautiful scenery and local culture along one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe. Enjoy simple, quiet overnight anchorages or towns with a vibrant nightlife, and you might find yourself moored in historic harbours or modern marinas.

LOOKING FURTHER AFIELD?

If you are looking for a new sailing destination here is one you might not have considered. The Whitsundays are described by some as a sailor’s paradise with calm seas and balmy tradewinds. These islands are located between the Queensland coast and the Great

Barrier Reef and are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. While most of the islands are not inhabited there are a handful that welcome visiting sailors. This area offers sailing suitable for novices, although experienced sailors cannot fail to fall in love with the Whitsundays too.

BOATBUILDER TO THE STARS

pair already had a wonderful reputation in National 12s and Merlin Rockets which they then added to with the other restricted development classes, the International 14s and Canoes and National 18s. However, the dinghy scene was already changing towards a greater interest in the one design classes, a field in which Proctor would score an early success with his Osprey. Osprey would be a front runner at the international trials for a new two-man performance boat, which also saw the advent of the John Westell designed Coronet. When Coronet morphed into the 5o5, Westell would approach Chippendale to build the prototype, although at this point plans only existed for the hull shape. Westell was struggling to design an interior, but on his next visit to Jack’s yard, there was the boat – complete! Jack and his team had worked out that there was only one way to do the decking and had got on with the job. CONTINUED SUCCESSES Chippendale and Proctor continued to collaborate on boats such as the Kestrel and the Catkin catamaran, though Jack was keen to build for other designers too. He did the prototype Fireball for

hose of you who follow these diary musings from one month to the next will know that during the 2018 season, the sport of small boat sailing will be celebrating the centenary of our most prolific and successful designer, Ian Proctor. Yet for all his design brilliance and innovation, Ian’s work at the drawing board was only half the story, for the boats, often radical prototypes, still had to be built. Part of the Proctor story must be in the close friendships he forged with equally inspired people; he had Cliff Norbury working with him on the masts, whilst local boatbuilder Jack Chippendale was very much the ‘go-to’ builder when Ian had enjoyed another of his clever ideas. Indeed, the Proctor story would be far less than we know today without the input of Jack, for he had two extra qualities. First, he was a classically trained boatbuilder, so was able to ‘loft’ the designer’s lines to develop the full-sized hull shape and, secondly, he was local, which back in the late 1940s and early 1950s was an important factor. FORTUNATE APPRENTICESHIP Jack’s early days had been spent in what is now known as ‘Old Portsmouth’ and as a working-class lad there, it was expected that he would follow his contemporaries from his school days into the Navy. Sadly, Jack had some long-term health issues and would be rejected by the service, leaving him to find another career. He was lucky to get an apprenticeship at a local boatbuilders, where he would have to work for six-and-a-half days each week. It may well have been a demanding

life for the young Jack, but he was rapidly developing not only wood working skills but also how to interpret a design and workforce management. Although a kindly soul, Jack did not suffer fools gladly and when pushed too hard by the boatyard foreman, Jack walked away to start his own boatbuilding business in Warsash on the River Hamble. MEETING IAN PROCTOR It was here that Jack had the lucky fortune to meet up with Ian Proctor, who was himself working in a boatyard whilst developing his skills as a dinghy designer. The story is that Ian offered to help with typing and other office chores if Jack would help him build a new breed of competitive racing dinghies. This tied in well with Jack’s plans, as he had already decided that he wanted to build not only race winning dinghies, but beautiful ones too. In another fortuitous twist of fate, Ian had been given the commission to design a new National 12 for the young John Oakeley, who was then one of the brightest rising stars of the new generation of post war sailors. Jack lofted the design and built the boat which, after a few issues with the rules, went on to be a race winner that attracted lots of attention. Jack’s next project would be for another Proctor design, this time for the newly merged Merlin Rocket class. With the commission in the pipeline, Jack travelled down to Christchurch to see some of the boats racing and came away impressed with their grace and beauty. His problem, though, was in

getting hold of high quality materials in a time of austerity. Instead of relying on imported hardwood, Jack chanced on a supply of hemlock which, once trimmed down into planks of the correct thickness, resulted in the most beautiful of finishes.

Peter Milne and developed the concept of the rectangular box for the cockpit, which greatly aided the then popular pastime of home building. He was also closely associated with the launch of the new single hander, the International Contender. The demand for a boat built by Chippendales was such that Jack had to expand and then expand again, ending up with his famous boatshed at the top of Fareham creek. But as the 1960s came to an end the pressures of building labour intensive one-off dinghies would see Jack’s business forced into liquidation. Although Jack is no longer with us, we are lucky that there are still many examples of his superb boatbuilding in existence, with many of those that had been designed by Ian Proctor hopefully making an appearance at the Proctor Centenary Gala Event over 2 - 3 June at Bosham Sailing Club. During this weekend, it is hoped that many of the wonderful woodworkers who were there with Jack will be able to visit, to see the results of theirs and Jack’s handicraft, 50 years on. nless you have been hiding under a rock, you will know that foiling is the coolest thing to have happened to sailing in years. Where foiling was once the exclusive playground of professional sailors and racers, the kit, locations and even instructors are now in place to help a wider range of sailors and windsurfers take flight. RYA Chief Instructor for Dinghy and Windsurfing Amanda Van Santen is at the forefront of this evolution, having spotted the need to bring foiling to mainstream sailing with three new pilot RYA courses: First Flights, Sustained Flights and Performance Flights. She explained: “It was my aspiration to make foiling more accessible and through our RYA Training Centres delivering safe tuition, I believe we are now perfectly placed to do this. “Our network of participating centres, who have invested in specific equipment, provide an easier and more accessable route through correctly set up kit and trained instructors in a safe environment. In as little as two hours you may have potentially experienced your first foiling take-off.” The pilot courses are designed to teach the fundamentals of foiling with a clear pathway for those looking to learn, progress or enhance their skills.

WHAT DOES FOILING FEEL LIKE?

Sommer Bailey is a sailing instructor in Greece. She describes her recent experience of learning to foil: “When you are flying along it feels like you are floating in the air. Then when you first take off, your head is all over the place and it does not feel real - it feels absolutely amazing.”

IS FOILING FOR ME?

If you can sail a laser in a good breeze, perhaps the skill level of around RYA Level 2/3, you can learn to SailFoil. Equally, if you can blast in the footstraps, you can learn to WindFoil. A good intermediate is someone who can plane, adjust stance to the conditions, make effective use of the footstraps and has all the key skills to replicate that on the foil.

WHAT KIT DO I NEED?

The beauty of learning to foil at an RYA Training Centre is that they provide the kit. This gives you an opportunity to test the water without having to shell out for loads of expensive kit.

WHERE CAN I LEARN?

WHAT CONDITIONS DO YOU NEED?

Depending on the chosen equipment, conditions and technique, some boards and boats can lift in wind as light as six to seven knots. However, with both sail and windsurf foiling, it is best to try your first flights in 10 knots or over, enabling you to get a feel of how much lift the foil gives and how best to encourage flight. Tuition plays a crucial part in gaining and embedding the right skills and techniques early on. A combination of the correct coaching points, the right learning environment and good equipment set increase the frequency of success and development.

WHAT WILL I LEARN ON A COURSE?

RYA First Flights is a taster session, aimed at introducing you to the concept of foiling, the equipment needed plus all the knowledge you need to take off. This is often the easy part, but in order to really enjoy your first foiling take offs, you will need to understand the subtle but critical techniques necessary to keep you in the air. Once you have got those first few take-offs under your belt, and your understanding of how the kit reacts, your primary skills will start to come back to you and accelerate your foiling progression allowing you to build

TWO TOP TRAINERS SHARE THEIR FOILING TIPS: RYA SailFoil Trainer Shaun Priestley Always aim to take off on a reach to a close reach. Once the boat lifts out of the water and starts foiling, shift your concentration to the lift from the foils and maintain balance to assist you in sustained flight. Balance and mainsheet trim, as well as sailing to the apparent wind are key to foiling success. The skill of sailing with windward heel and effective use of the foils, are all techniques which come naturally after practice. If you have sailed asymmetric boats with the kite up you will know the feeling of increased speed and the importance of keeping the boat flat. Understanding how you sail to apparent wind and adopting the most effective sailing line will bring you the control needed.

RYA WindFoil Trainer Sam Ross When you first launch, uphaul! This will help to avoid any unwanted contact with the foil. Always keep hold of the boom. This will ensure you stay well clear of the foil if you end up in the water. The further back your weight is on the board, the more lift you will get. In marginal conditions get in the back strap early to help pump the foil, in windier conditions keep the back foot in front of the back strap to reduce lift and increase control. When windsurf foiling you have two engines, you can pump the rig to generate speed, but also pump down into the board and foil to generate lift. Once foiling, keep the rig still and lock the back leg down to maintain a flat board in flight.

HOW TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING PRODUCTS INTO MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SAFETY AIDS Last year saw the introduction of some new safety tracking wristbands from a variety of manufacturers, including the OLAS Tags from Exposure Lights. When virtually ‘tethered’ with your mobile or tablet, the tags mean that sailors can track back to the point where the wristband (and its wearer) have gone overboard.

AS well as being able to summon an Uber taxi or your dry-cleaning service on land, rapid changes in mobile technology has made its impact on boating safety. These advances are helping boaters access lower cost safety and navigation aids. Mobile apps with navigation data have been available for a while, and are handy if you do not have a chartplotter.

INTEGRATED TECHNOLOGIES These technologies can do more for the consumer when they are integrated together and the Exposure Lights R&D team, with their heritage in specialist bike lights, have pushed this forward. The starting point was adapting LED technology for marine safety use beyond just search-lighting. Using Exposure’s patented water-activation technology, a seemingly normal highpowered torch can automatically switch on an emergency strobe when fully immersed in water. Either when thrown towards a man overboard or worn in a holster, the MOB torch activates when it hits the water. The next step forward for boaters has been integrating LED and MOB technologies with mobile and Bluetooth. Now a very small,

lightweight torch, smaller than the palm of your hand, has the capacity to help you navigate back to the position it went in the water. A powerful light is an essential safety item for all sailors, so building in additional safety features makes sense, rather than purchasing separate devices. Through developing the OLAS wristband technology further, a ‘smart’ LED light can be actively connected to a mobile app. When the light is separated from the mobile device, breaking the connection as in an MOB situation, the mobile alerts the crew and informs them what to do. BLUETOOTH LOW ENERGY The core technology lying behind this is Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Using standard Bluetooth or WiFi would have high battery usage meaning the tags or torch could only last for a few days. With BLE the battery usage is minimal, which keeps the size down and enables devices like the new OLAS Float-On torch to last up to 1.5 months, continuously broadcasting and searching for water connection. The other core technology, as contained in the OLAS App, is the integration of the mobile device’s in-built technology, such

as the GPS and compass. This means the system operates effectively without any cellular signal, so that even mid-ocean your mobile will track you back to the point the device went overboard. These devices are handy for inexperienced or novice boaters, plus many people worry how they will react in a real emergency. The OLAS App’s informative screens prompt the crew left on board back to the initial MOB position, and walks them through calling the Coastguard and recovery procedures.

GET INTO PLAICE Spring has sprung and the water is warming up, and now is when the ďŹ shing around our coast comes into its own, as Simon Everett explains.

long the shingly or mixed sand and shingle areas the plaice will be arriving in numbers. Everywhere from Dover to Cornwall has areas where plaice can be caught. These tasty and sporting flatfish are quite obliging and will readily take worm baits tipped with a sliver of squid. While worm on its own will catch plaice, that squid strip makes quite a difference and will improve your catch rate no end.

INQUISITIVE FISH The rig that is most often used features plenty of beads or sequins to act as attractors; plaice are very inquisitive fish and what might seem an excessive amount of decoration is the norm. Most success will come to a bait that is moved along the seabed, either by drifting and dragging your hooks along the clean bottom, or if at anchor by trundling your hooks along the bottom with the tide, so the bait is presented naturally at the speed of the current. Plaice are very predatory and will chase down a moving bait. You can use light tackle for plaice. A spinning outfit is plenty man enough and will allow the plaice to show their sporting credentials; they are quite powerful swimmers when given the chance.

Fine wire worm hooks were put to good use

Lower the bait to the bottom and pay out a little extra line so that as the boat drifts the weight remains in contact with the seabed at all times. If you get a bite, which will manifest itself as a sharp rattle, let out line for a few seconds until you feel the next series of rattles, then just put the reel into gear. The combination of the fish darting off with your bait and the drift of the boat should hook the fish for you.

I left readers in my last blog with an insight into the solo yacht races, including the SoloFASTNET, I have lined up for this year. However, I have three major hurdles to overcome before my first race. Will I make it to the start line?

campaign. So, I will have to find and set up an entirely new boat. My old [very good] boat was a 2014 Sunfast 3200. I have done just over 10,000 miles racing in 3200s and I was just starting to get to know the boat, so having to learn a new boat all over again is a daunting prospect. I spent a good deal of time on the boat working with Carbon Yachting [in Hamble] with Chris Prevost and Andy Greenwood (ex-Figaro sailor) getting her set up just right. Knowing your boat is sometimes more than half the battle, and a level of trust takes time to develop.

So, there you have it… I am entering this season with the knowledge that not only do I have to set up a new boat, but I have to bring her back from Holland and rebuild her too. She is a J105 and she is quite old (2001), and full of problems. She is in the capable hands of Yagra Yacht services who are going to deal with some soft bits in the hull, seal several leaks, re-rig the mast and fixing a worn engine among a heap of other jobs before I attempt to sail her back across the North Sea (with a wounded shoulder) and finish the job of setting her up to make her race-ready in Hamble. Did I say I like a challenge? Next month: You will see the type of modifications and work I will be putting into this fresh water used (non-raced) J-105. Lucky for me that Ocean Elements will be funding the project and Carbon Yachting will be helping me get her race ready when I get her back from Holland…

Make sure that everyone plays their part and shares in the fun side of sailing as well as the more mundane maintenance and inevitable repairs often needed throughout the season. Another aspect, especially for friends to consider, is whether you will all want to go sailing together or perhaps all require use of the boat at the same time, such as school holidays. It can also be frustrating to part-own a yacht only to find that the weekends that you have booked are restricted because of weather. The appeal of owning your own boat is often the freedom to just get up and go.

CHARTERING A YACHT

Charter companies offer anyone with sufficient experience the opportunity to hire a yacht, which gives the chance to sail in a variety of locations around the world. From a holiday abroad, to weekend or even day charters in the UK there are plenty of charter companies to choose from. Whilst chartering involves paying a premium, the upside is totally flexible sailing. You can choose and change location at will, have zero overheads and no maintenance to worry about. However, you accept that others have used the boat before you and it will often lack the personal creature comforts of a privately owned yacht. If you are light on experience, then consider a sailing course or hire a skipper to brush up your skills. If sailing abroad, choosing a flotilla holiday and cruising in company helps build confidence. Always consider the prevailing conditions and choose a sailing area that best suits your abilities. At Universal Sailing, we encourage many of our new sea school clients to try chartering as their next step. It can help build their experience and try a variety of boats whilst deciding whether to buy a yacht. Traditional bareboat chartering, flotilla sailing and skippered yacht charter are all ideal options to just get out on the water for a few days or weeks a year. However, if you want to be sailing regularly, then the costs could start to add up and you may start getting frustrated by not having things set up as you want them or left them.

BOAT CLUBS AND MEMBERSHIP SCHEMES

Some schemes offer the option to sail on boats within their fleets around the world, as well as on your own boat. Charter companies will assist you with your purchase or may even take on a boat you already own. Certain schemes from larger companies involve buying the boat directly from the manufacturer to their specification, managing it for you over an agreed fixed period, then returning the boat to you after your contract ends. These companies generally offer to buy back your boat, if you plan to renew the contract, or will help sell it depending on your plans. Yachts are normally privately financed and you are given a set allocation of days for personal use each year, depending on the agreement. In return for the charter income, the

ACCESS

Approach by sea via west pole beacon – cross Chichester Bar located at the entrance to the harbour. Once inside the harbour you need to head northeast past East Head and towards Itchenor to arrive at the marina. The marina approach channel is dredged to approx. 0.5m below CD – vessels entering the marina should keep to the starboard side of the channel. Chichester Bar is located at the entrance to the harbour and is dredged to approximately 1.5m below chart datum giving a depth of 2m at Mean Low Water Springs, however the bottom can vary up to 0.75m. With an ebb tide and strong southerly winds, it is advisable to exercise caution and cross the Bar between three hours before and one hour after high water springs. CRUISING

In the harbour alone there are 17 miles of amazing channels to explore by boat. The Solent is just on your doorstep offering easy access east or west to some of the UK’s best cruising grounds. Within a day’s sail of Chichester Marina visit the Isle of Wight for the day or discover the calm waters of Beaulieu River and tranquillity of Lymington Harbour. Chichester is also an excellent start point for cross channel cruises or trips to Premier’s Gosport, Port Solent, Swanwick, Brighton and Eastbourne marinas - where berth holders can take advantage of their 42 free visitor night credits. A little further afield the Channel Islands, Cherbourg and the Brittany coastline can all be easily explored.

THINGS TO DO

As you approach Longmore Point ensure that your VHF is on Ch80. On passing Birdham Spit pile call the marina using your boat’s call sign, advise your position and request lock entry. The Lock Keeper will acknowledge your call and either instruct you to “proceed to the lock on a green light” or in busy times “join the back of the queue for the lock and enter in turn upon a green signal light”. To Chichester by road: From the Chichester bypass (A27), take the A286 following signs for the Witterings. At the Stockbridge Roundabout take the second exit – A286 signposted Bracklesham, Witterings. After two miles turn right into Chichester Marina. Buses operate every 20 minutes between Chichester Bus station (South Street) and the Witterings. Also, fast trains run between London Victoria and Chichester. Gatwick airport is one hour fifteen minutes from Chichester Marina by road. Private aircraft may land at Goodwood Aerodrome. This airfield is just five miles from the marina.

LOCAL EATERIES

Visitors and berth holders do not have to go far for great food and a lively atmosphere. On site, The Boat House Cafe is a relaxed eatery with plenty of seating inside and outside on a balcony overlooking the harbour. Serving an ever-changing seasonal menu, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Also on site the Yacht Club sits in a prime location overlooking the harbour and within walking distance of the marina. The large, modern clubhouse has a relaxing spacious bar and a comfortable restaurant serving snacks and full meals. The club also runs regular social events to suit members of all ages and tastes. If you want to go further afield, the traditional Crown & Anchor pub, located in Dell Quay is a popular destination for walkers and can be easily accessed by the shore.

RECOMMENDATIONS

John Hall has been a berth holder at Chichester Marina since 2005, following years of using the marina’s services since the 1960s. John’s favourite thing about Chichester Marina is that “it is a sociable place in a nice location, it is well run and the friendly staff really do make a big difference. I always pop into the reception to say hi. The onsite Yacht Club, of which I am a member, is another reason I enjoy visiting and berthing at Chichester Marina.” David Batten arrived at Chichester Marina with his boat, Corlandus, in December 2015. He chose Chichester Marina to berth Corlandus because “it is a stunningly beautiful marina – complemented by the fabulous Chichester Harbour. There is no marina that comes close for me.” David’s favourite thing about being a berth holder at Chichester Marina is “the beauty of the surroundings and the pure tranquillity of being on board Corlandus at D pontoon. It is bliss.”

Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, Chichester is surrounded by beautiful countryside, sandy beaches, fishing villages and historical and family attractions including Goodwood House and Racecourse. Chichester Marina is located at the eastern end of Chichester Harbour, just four miles from the historic city of Chichester. For lovers of culture The Pallant House Gallery is a must see along with a visit to the Minerva Theatre and Chichester Festival Theatre. Chichester Cathedral, which has stood at the heart of the city for 900 years and is famous for its art, both ancient and modern, is an iconic landmark and continues to attract thousands of visitors for its stunning architecture. A short drive ( just outside Chichester) will take you to the village of Fishbourne, where the remains of Fishbourne Roman Palace and gardens lie; one of the outstanding Roman sites in the UK. Further round the harbour lies Bosham, a quintessentially English village with thatched-roofed cottages around a village green and on the coast itself, pastel-painted fishermen’s homes overlooking the water. Some great beaches are close by too, including the sandy beaches of East Head and The Witterings. The region enjoys the beauty of the extensive, natural sheltered area of Chichester Harbour, together with long, sandy, unspoilt coastline stretching from West Wittering Beach to Bracklesham Bay. West Witterings is tucked away at the entrance to Chichester Harbour and is routinely voted one of the best beaches in Britain. OCEAN BROTHERS WELCOMED HOME GUINNESS World Record Breaking pair Jude Massey and Greg Bailey, the Ocean Brothers, were greeted by hundreds of supporters on and off the water as they made their homecoming into Lymington. Sponsored by Lymington Yacht Haven, the Lymington brothers had completed a 53 day crossing of the Atlantic Ocean,

raising £100,000 for skin cancer research. After being brought home on board a P&O Cruises ship, the pair were welcomed into Lymington River by a flotilla of boats and lines of supporters ashore. WHISKEY CHALLENGE

A team of Cornish dads planning an epic 3,000-mile charity row in a boat less than 30ft long have been given a haven of support by Mylor Yacht Harbour. The Atlantic Seamen, who aim to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for the Urology Foundation and the Children’s Hospice Southwest, have been given a safe dry berth for their boat at Mylor’s marina and use of the harbour’s facilities during their training for the Talisker Whiskey 2018 Challenge. Cornwall-based friends Andrew Berry, Jon Davies, Tim May and Robert Spence will set off from the Canary Islands in December, rowing 24 hours a day for more than a month as they cross the ocean to Antigua. “The challenge these guys are undertaking is immense and their training regime is gruelling enough, so anything we can do to make it that bit easier and more convenient we are very glad to do,” says Mylor Yacht Harbour’s Marina Manager Culum Matheson.

The CA Sections are split into two categories, covering local member groups around the UK (currently numbering 19) and broader networks in popular cruising areas around the world such as Mediterranean, Baltic, Biscay, Celtic, Channel, European Inland Waterways, North Sea and Blue Water areas. Members use Sections to gain firsthand knowledge and advice, and to socialise with other members. They usually join at least two Sections, one near to home and the other where they cruise, but they can join as many as they like for free. Each of the Cruising Sections also has an email net, a Section-specific forum for members to exchange information relevant to that cruising area.

he Cruising Association is primarily an information hub for its 6,000+ members who share their experiences, knowledge and fun with each other to gain the most out of their cruising, whether it be in sailing or motorboats around the UK’s coastline or further afield. Every possible communication platform - from traditional methods through to the latest App technology - is used to ensure that the vast array of first-hand cruising ‘intelligence’ is imparted to its members. All the geographical information (HLRs – Honorary Local Representatives, discounts, cruising reports, logs and so on) are arranged into a geographical hierarchy so that, for example, everything relating to the Mediterranean is shown together. Below the top level, each section then further divides into sub-areas, usually by country and are often aligned with popular pilot books or sailing areas.

This App for Cruising Association members encourages the sharing of real-time information on places they visit. Whilst the CA website contains thousands of first-hand reports on harbours and anchorages across the globe, on CAptain’s Mate you can view the reports directly on your smartphone or tablet, and as new reports are added they are downloaded to your device the next time you are connected to the internet.

Members also enjoy access to the more traditional facilities and services provided by the CA, including an impressive collection of pilot books, charts, magazines and reference materials housed in the CA Library and Information Centre at CA House in Limehouse Basin. The Association’s HQ is ideally located in London between the City of London and Canary Wharf, connecting the River Lee (via the Limehouse Cut), the Regents Canal and the River Thames. The CA Library and Information Centre is the largest of its kind in the world and contains a highly acclaimed collection of material covering every aspect of marine activity, with particular focus on sail and power cruising. In addition to a large collection of paper charts, the CA has also been loaned a Raymarine simulator rig, allowing members to enjoy passageplanning using Navionics charts, using the built-in Raymarine Axiom Pro MFD (Multi-Functional Display) Chartplotter, a P70s Autopilot control head and an I70s Multi-function instrument display. TOP 10 PLACES TO VISIT 1

LARGS - The charming seaside resort of Largs is steeped in history with boating at the heart of the community. The town’s Viking heritage is celebrated each year in an annual festival with Vikingar museum, one of the most popular museums in Ayrshire. Sharing the town’s fame is Nardini’s, a 70-year-old ice cream parlour. Largs is also home to Scotland’s award-winning marina, Largs Yacht Haven, with year-round racing and the active Largs Sailing Club.

ISLE OF CUMBRAE - Just a mile across the Firth of Largs lies the Isle of Cumbrae, known as the ‘Jewel of the Clyde’. Millport, the largest town on the island, is home to sandy beaches and the small island is also great for cycling. Bikes can be brought across on the ferry from Largs with hire also available from Largs Yacht Haven. The 10 mile circumnavigation is suitable for all levels of cyclists with plenty of pubs and shops en route. There are visitor moorings aplenty.

ISLE OF ARRAN - Nicknamed ‘Scotland in miniature’, Arran boasts everything that Scotland is famous for: mountains, castles, beaches, golf courses and distilleries. Start your trip at Lamlash overlooking the bay to Holy Isle, home of Buddhist monks. From there, head north to Brodick Castle which lies in Britain’s only island country park. Great for hiking, the views from on top of Arran’s famous munro, Goat Fell, will take your breath away. Lochranza, at the north end, has visitor moorings and a landing pontoon to assist shore access to the distillery.

KYLES OF BUTE - One of the prettiest passages on the Firth of Clyde takes you along the fjord-like waters of the Kyles of Bute. The navigation of Bute takes you past the pretty village of Colintraive, and the historic fishing harbour of Rothesay, which has visitor pontoons. Mount Stuart, the incredible historic home of the Marquis of Bute family is well worth a visit.

TROON - Arguably the safest harbour on the west coast, Troon is a popular destination for boaters starting their Scottish adventures. The large harbour walls protect the marina from all wind directions, with fuel and boatyard facilities on-hand. The town is wellknown for its stunning beaches, pretty esplanade and championship links golf courses. The town also has some of the freshest fish restaurants on offer, or you can wind down with drinks on the terrace at Scotts restaurant overlooking the marina.

THE FIRTH OF CLYDE

CAMPBELTOWN - One of the largest towns in Argyll, it is on the beautiful peninsula of Kintyre. Having sailed between the Islands of Pladda and Ailsa Craig, you will see some breathtaking scenery as you sail west towards Campbeltown Loch. A well-deserved local whisky will await you at the superb Royal Hotel, or you can get your walking boats on and join the Kintyre Way footpath. Visitor pontoons are available.

ISLE OF GIGHA AND JURA - If you have got the luxury of taking a longer trip, continue round the Mull of Kintyre to the beautiful islands of Gigha and Jura before joining the Crinan Canal. These remote parts of the North Channel offer some of the most stunning sailing opportunities. Visitor moorings are rarer in these regions, but you will find several sheltered anchorages including Craighouse on Jura where the popular Jura distillery can be found.

CRINAN CANAL - At nine miles long, the canal links Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig with the Sound of Jura. The canal is flanked by uninterrupted views of the natural landscape. Sailing through the canal takes around a day, but licences allow four overnights so be sure to step ashore and enjoy the local area.

TARBERT - One of the most popular harbours on the Clyde, Tarbert is shadowed by the remains of the ancient castle. Pontoon berthing awaits with the port famous for its historic fishing fleet, a popular food and drink culture and stunning views.

Majestic Wine Warehouse lists three options: Villemarin Picpoul de Penet 2016, 12.5 per cent, £7.99, Ormarine Picpoul, 13 per cent, £8.99 and Domaine Felines Jourdan de Penet 2015, 12.5 per cent, £9.99. Wine specialists Laithwaites are very enthusiastic for Picpoul and have an exclusive supply from Floris Lemstra 2017 for £9.99 on multi-buy promotion. To set up your own compare and contrast exercise with Muscadet, go for Fief Guérin Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu sur Lie 2016, 12 per cent, also £8.49 at Waitrose for a 75cl bottle. My tasting panel found it hard to choose, the Picpoul liked for the sweet and sour fruit flavours, and the Muscadet for being slightly more full bodied, but they chose Picpoul for the fish supper. Muscadet is made in the western France Loire region around Nantes, where the vineyards are wafted by Atlantic breezes coming ashore between Brest and La Rochelle, and got its AOP in 1994. It is made only from the Melon de Bourgoyne grape, with no blending, and the maximum abv is 12 per cent.

Picpoul de Penet dry white wine from France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region is beginning to get noticed and, as it rises into favour, we are seeing a modest increase in brands available on our supermarket shelves. Some commentators call it the ‘new Muscadet’. Picpoul translates literally, I am told, as ‘lip-stinger’. The wine does have a distinct zingy acidity on the tongue, which prompts the comparison. Relatively new to our UK shelves, it was first recognised as a regional type of wine in 1937 and it was not until 2013 that Picpoul was granted its own AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protégée). The AOP requires the wine to be made from the white Piquepoul grape, a distinctively small and oval shaped indigenous grape which was possibly planted by the Romans.

SUR LIE

The ‘sur lie’ is an important qualification gained by being aged on its own lies (spent yeast from the fermentation process) without filtration from harvest and fermentation in October until at least March of the following year. This adds body and flavour to the wine which is bottled with a slight natural spritz to help retain freshness. There are some brands that are not ‘sur lie’. Waitrose has Muscadet la Marinière for £6.49 the bottle from vineyards nearer the sea. But I think the £2 premium for the ‘sur lie’ is worth it. One way or the other Picpoul is worth a try. Wine Therapy in Cowes, the specialist wine shop approximately opposite the Red Jet terminal, were very keen on Picpoul when I dropped in on them, and were expecting stock before the end of April. It should be there now!

GROWN AROUND PINET

The growing region is centred around the town of Pinet and southwards to the shores of the Etang de Thau and thence to Sète on the Mediterranean shore, an area renowned for oysters. The dry and sunny sea breeze tempers the day temperatures 1 9 6 4 and the Thau reduces the heat drop of the night. 6 7 3 5 The result is a refreshing dry white wine, clear 5 2 with a tinge of apple green and a beautiful citrusy 2 8 3 4 9 nose and gently zesty finish. Best drunk around 9
