ALL AT SEA MAY 2015

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde

DO you love history? Turn to page 26 and you will find Natalie Draper’s fascinating story about her family’s Little Ship, Caronia. This boat’s extraordinary history varies from Radio Caroline to aiding a passenger liner. However, it is its role in 1940’s Operation Dynamo for which Caronia will be best remembered, helping to save hundreds of thousands of soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk. This month marks the 75th anniversary of Operation Dynamo and Caronia will be taking part in the commemorative events. With the days getting longer and warmer, now is the time of year when many people decide to take up boating. If you are new to boating there are Push The Boat Out sessions taking place this month all around the country offering many different opportunities to get on the water. You will be able to experience sailing and windsurfing at ‘have a go’ taster events at sailing clubs and centres across the UK. Last year an amazing 24,000 people took part and it will be interesting to see what this year’s numbers are like. Let us know if you take part. I wonder how many of those at the Push The Boat Out days will be women? I say this because a recent BMF study showed that there has been a steady increase in female participation in boating since 2010 and it is now at 6.2 per cent of the population. This puts it at its joint highest since the study began in 2002. I did not need a survey to tell me us ladies love boating too, but

it is good to know that the increase in sailing activities for women, from courses to cruises, is bringing more females into the fantastic world of boats – both power and sail. If you are interested in being part of an article about women and boating – whether your link is work or pleasure - please drop me a line (editor@allatsea.co.uk). Do you have a bucket list? Apparently buying a holiday home, a trip to the Maldives and swimming with dolphins are all top of the average British person’s bucket list. I have done one of those things – I will let you guess which one though! Some of the other things that would be on my bucket list – if I had one – also featured in the top 40 things people would most like to do before they die. For example, I would love to drive Route 66, take a hot air balloon ride, write a novel and run a major race. A number of experiences listed are outdoor leisure pursuits, which is why I am sure taking part in the Round the Island Race is on many people’s bucket list. Almost 2,000 people enter each year, with many returning year after year. It is great events like this that create amazing memories, not to mention friendships. If this race, or any other race, is on your bucket list stop dawdling and sign up now. You will have a day you will never forget and it is one to tick off the list. Now, about buying that holiday home… editor@allatsea.co.uk

Ladies love boating IT is a great time for women interested in starting boating or developing their skills. A recent study by the BMF showed a steady increase in female participation in boating since 2010 and it is now at 6.2 per cent of the population. This is the joint highest figure since the study began in 2002. With more and more dedicated courses becoming available women have a fantastic choice of options open to them. For example, new from sailing and cruising holiday company Seafarer is a female only RYA yacht training programme based on Lefkas in the south Ionian in Greece. The courses covered are the RYA

Competent Crew and Day Skipper, which are usually taken over a week’s holiday. This gives visitors the opportunity to explore the Ionian islands as well as take the course. Up to five female students are on each tuition yacht along with a female instructor. Seven day RYA courses, available from April to November, with Seafarer Training in Greece start at £475 including the training, accommodation and provisions for breakfast and lunch. www.seafarerholidays.co.uk/ sailingschool Are you a female boater? RECORD BREAKING POWERBOAT FOR SALE

THOSE with a large bank balance and who love boating history have the chance to own a genuine piece of powerboat memorabilia. The 72ft Virgin Atlantic Challenger II has been put up for sale with Irish broker Performance Marine. Back in 1986 this 53-knot monohull shattered the transatlantic powerboat record when it crossed from New York to London in 80 hours 31 mins. The asking price of £725,000 is high, but is actually less than half of what Sir Richard Branson spent on the original build. The boat’s current owner, Dan Stevens,

came across Virgin Atlantic Challenger II in a Mallorca marina in 2011. Dan went on to spend three months renovating the powerboat, at a cost of more than £100,000, with the help of broker Brian Thornton and Eckie Rastig, who worked on the engine during the record-breaking transatlantic passage. Although modifications were kept to a minimum, one key upgrade has been made in the engine room. Even though she is nearing her 28th birthday, Virgin Atlantic Challenger II still has fewer than 1,000 engine hours on the clock.

Plymouth to be Transat host venue PLYMOUTH has won the bid to host the start of the next edition of The Transat on 8 May 2016. The 14th edition of this historic quadrennial solo transatlantic race began its life in 1960 (as OSTAR) and has transformed into one of the most important events on the professional racing calendar.

Image: Th.Martinez/Sea&Co

Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “We’ll be working to create a real regatta feel for the event and enlivening the Hoe, Barbican and Sutton Harbour with music, entertainment and much more for sailing enthusiasts, families and visitors to enjoy.”

The 2,800-mile race across the North Atlantic is renowned for wild storms and tough upwind conditions, icebergs and freezing fog in the final part, and can take between eight to nineteen days for all the boats to finish. www.thetransat.com

DULAS BOATS RIDES OUT THE STORM OUTBOARD engine dealership Dulas Boats, based in Anglesey, is bouncing back to its former glory after recently completing a full refurbishment of its

ALL AT SEA MAY 2015

premises after they were damaged by 107mph winds that devastated the area almost a year ago. The family-run business, an Evinrude dealership for

over 28 years, is now thriving as a result of its new extended showroom. The premises have been given a complete overhaul on the inside, including expanding the size of the work bays. The new showroom now has the capacity to accommodate between seven and eight boats. Alwyn Rowlands, owner of Dulas Boats, says, “It was quite a scary time when the storm first hit the building and the team could not believe the amount of damage it caused. The feedback received from customers is that they still enjoy the same high levels of service and quality that they have come to expect from our business but they now have a greater choice of boats to choose from.” www.dulasboats.co.uk

ROUND HAYLING IN THE MIST

Over 140 competitors took part in the Round Hayling Island event on what was a rather grey and misty Good Friday. Seven OC6 (6 man outrigger canoes) created an impressive spectacle as the Mayor of Havant raised the flag to start their race. They were closely followed by 70 windsurfers, ranging from the team from Seavets to the young Team 15 entrants. Ten minutes later 20 Paddleboarders started in the first ever SUP Company Challenge. Competitors were able to finish at Northney (four miles), the Ferry (nine miles) or complete the full fourteen mile circumnavigation. The first outrigger canoe (Pete Holiday’s team from Bournemouth Outrigger Canoe Club) reached the Langstone Bridge, with the other OC6s not far behind. They were followed by Nick Kethro and Adam Stiling in the OC1 class. The first windsurfer to reach the bridge was Louis Morris, closely followed by four times winner Rob Kent, with his wife Annette in seventh place through the bridge. Each tried to keep up the momentum as they had to drop their rig to glide under the bridge. The SUPs, in the first ever full circumnavigation, were led by Paul Simmons from Tushingham. As the fleet approached the ferry point, the weather closed in and mist descended over the course. The ferry point was later closed as a safety restriction. First to complete the full navigation was Pete Holliday’s Team in the OC6 in a time of 1hr 49.07mins, with PRCC-1 just over 3 minutes

behind. The first mixed crew from The Royal Canoe Club finished in 2hrs 8.54 mins. The first windsurfer to complete the full 14 mile course was Rob Kent, making it five wins in a row and rounding the Island in 2hrs 18.44 mins. Louis Morris came in 10 minutes behind Rob, followed by Lewis Barnes and Alan Jackson. Annette Kent, in fifth place, was the first lady to complete the course in 2 hrs 36.21 mins. Completing the silver course were first Nigel Tailyour, followed by Partick Boyce and Alec Henry. The windsurfer bronze course winner was Hannah Maunder followed by Murray Maunder and John Message. In the SUP class, Paul Simmons was the first to ever complete the SUP Company Round Hayling Island Race in an impressive 2hrs 34.33 mins. Marie Buchanan came in second with a ladies course record of 2hrs 53.33 mins and Philip Plume came in third. The SUP silver course winner was Steve

Trott, followed by Ed Challis and Susan Jones. Jeff Marshman (a journalist from The Portsmouth News) and Kim Vignitchouk completed the bronze course. There were amazing prizes provided by sponsors, Tushingham, The SUP Company, Andy Biggs, Starboard, Red Paddle, Jobe, Action Van and Havant Brewery.

ABU Dhabi Ocean Racing (Ian Walker/GBR) buried the miserable memories of three years ago to win an epic Southern Ocean/ south Atlantic crossing in Leg 5 and claim their second stage victory in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. In 2012, Walker’s crew were forced to return to Auckland with hull damage and eventually retired from the leg to Itajaí, Brazil. This time, though, despite taking the worst that the Southern Ocean and then the south Atlantic could throw at them, the Emirati team emerged triumphant after nearly nineteen days of ultrachallenging sailing. Amazingly, skipper Ian Walker reported that they had reached Itajaí with the least amount of work for their shore crew to do of any leg so far in this edition. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing also set the new best mark in the chase for IWC prize for the most nautical miles sailed in 24 hours with 551nm leading up to Cape Horn. The team dropped the keel on two occasions in the heaviest of the weather with 50-knot winds buffeting the fleet,

losing some ground, but keeping his boat intact. “In hindsight, that looks a pretty shrewd decision,” Walker said. The stage victory leaves Walker’s team seven points clear at the top of the standings with five of the nine legs now completed. Unfortunately Dongfeng Race Team suffered a broken mast, which led to their retirement from the leg. The Chinese boat was sailed, partly under motor, to Itajaí where its shore crew faced a race against time to have the new mast refitted in time for the start of the next leg. Along with Dongfeng’s broken mast, there were at least three cases of Chinese gybes when the boats crashed to their sides before righting, and there were numerous cases of other sail and equipment breakages. The teams set off on Leg 6 from Itajaí en route to Newport, Rhode Island on 19 April. It was a lingering farewell to Brazil due to an almost total lack of wind. Dongfeng Race Team fortunes look to have changed for the better as they have taken the lead in this leg.

sport, and for people outside the sport to follow who is really at the top of their game throughout the year. With prize money starting to be introduced at some events, and increased opportunities for tV coverage, it is a big step up and i am really excited that Weymouth and Portland is part of the new World Cup circuit this summer (8 - 14 June). Weymouth is my home, my parents live there and they loved the whole buzz of the Olympics and having all the people there. So, the fact that there is a truly world class event with the best sailors in the world coming back to Weymouth and Portland is amazing. the event will be a great showcase for the sport in the UK and us as athletes, and it will also provide the opportunity for people to come into the

Winter might sound to some like it is the off season, but it is not really the off season for us. For me it has been a hugely productive period and has reaped some great rewards in terms of the progress i have made and the events i have competed at. it all kicked off for me with the iSAF World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi – the first event of its kind as iSAF undergoes a transformation of the World Cup circuit this season. With a limited entry, by invitation only, it was a high quality fleet in Abu Dhabi and a new venue for us to experience. After having a bit of time off after the World Championships, i wanted to see how i was going and on the first day i won all three races! i went on to win the event against some really stiff

competition including the French World Champion, so that was a great start to it all. We rolled from there onto rio in December and a regatta in the Olympic venue, which i also managed to win. that stood me in great stead for the next push in the new year at the iSAF Sailing World Cup Miami in January. Miami was an event i really had nailed as a target event. that is the first event that i’ve ever done where i have won before the medal race, so it was a great feeling. there were all sorts of different conditions that really tested you and it was tactically hard as well, so it was great to come out on top of that and win in such dominant style, knowing that the work was paying off and things were on track.

venue, rub shoulders with some of the best sporting talent and see them doing their thing. that can be pretty inspiring. there’s nothing like a home crowd backing you and i would love that to happen for us at our home World Cup! My european regatta season began at the iSAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres last month, which was the first regatta in the revamped new World Cup format of 40 boats per class, instead of the open entry it once was. You qualify via the world ranking lists or via selected warm-up regattas, and the winners of each World Cup leg qualify for the Final, which will be in Abu Dhabi once again this autumn. the concept of the revised World Cup series, i think, is really great. it makes the World Cup events stand out a bit more as places where you have got the elite of each of the Olympic Classes fighting it out from the go. You don’t have qualifying rounds to go through and the events are shorter, so you are racing for that medal from day one. i think it is potentially better for people to follow in terms of the marketing of the

Cleaning Up

Although the technology behind much of today’s performance clothing is increasingly advanced, it does also need to be looked after to maintain its effectiveness. Henri Lloyd say that in between washing your sailing clothing, it is important to remember that salt is a desiccant and will attract moisture. Consequently, all foul weather gear should be rinsed periodically using fresh water. In addition, before stowing away, ensure they are thoroughly dried. All Henri Lloyd waterproof garments are treated with a Durable Water Repellency finish, which can be rejuvenated by either tumble drying at a low heat setting or ironing on

Jenny Smallwood (Datchet Water SC) and Danielle Thomas (royal Lymington YC) led from the start of the race to win the event and become 420 Girls Youth National Champions, although on the water they weren’t sure exactly who had won. “It’s amazing, unbelievable. But we finally made it and it feels good. We were clueless about points; we thought we were fifth or something,” explained Thomas.

Laser Radial

There was a gold and bronze medal for the GBr Finns at the end of April at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in hyeres, France along with a Laser silver and 470 Men’s bronze. World Champion Giles Scott won the Finn class in style. he already had one foot on the top step of the podium with a near-unassailable 19 point lead heading into the final 10-boat double points race. The win gave Giles the one World Cup title which had been eluding him. The team’s strength in the Finn class was proven when Scott’s stablemate ed Wright took bronze medal. Nick Thompson, in the Laser, was satisfied with his silver medal after a tough battle with Australia’s Tom Burton, with the two of them effectively on level points at the top of the Laser leaderboard and fighting it

out for gold in the final race. Luke Patience and elliot Willis won bronze in the closely-fought 470 Men’s event. Gold had already gone to the Croatian duo Sime Fantela-Igor Marenic, but the remaining medal places were up for grabs between the British pair, Australians Mat BelcherWill ryan and the German crew of Ferdinand Gerz-Oliver Szymanski. There was disappointment, however, for hannah Mills and Saskia Clark who had hoped for a medalwinning finish but ended up in fourth place in the 470 Women’s event. The Olympic silver medallists were just a point from the podium and two points from the silver medal position after a tight final race in the women’s doublehanded class. elsewhere on the final day, Nacra 17 pairing Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves

Karyna Manuel (pictured) led the Laser radial girls’ from day one, and finished the event off with a second to be crowned Laser radial Girls Youth National Champion. In the Laser radial boys’ fleet, Jack Cookson (Castle Cove SC) and Daniel Whiteley (Pwllheli SC) haD been battling it out all week. Although Whiteley had a stunning last day with two firsts and a second, it was not quite enough to overcome Cookson’s consistency.

29ers Nick Thompson, in the Laser, brought home the silver medal after a tough battle with Australia’s Tom Burton Image: Ocean Images/British Sailing Team

finished in fifth place, with British 49er crews Dylan Fletcher-Alain Sign, James Peters-Fynn Sterritt and John PinkStuart Bithell ending their regattas in fifth, seventh and eighth places respectively. Women’s windsurfer Bryony Shaw, happy to have qualified for the rS:X

medal race after an illness-marred week, was seventh overall and Laser radial sailor Alison Young rounded her regatta off in eighth place. For all the latest news from the British Sailing Team: www.britishsailingteam.com @BritishSailing

The 29er fleet couldn’t catch Dan Venables (Sutton) and Patrick Keech (Sutton) as they extended their lead with each day of racing. Mimi el-Khazindar (royal Lymington YC) and emma Loveridge (royal Lymington YC) started the day in second position behind Anna Prescott (hISC) and eve Townsend (emsworth/hISC) but managed to overtake their rivals and now become 29er Girls Youth National Champions.

Spitfire

Sam Barker (Castle Cove SC) and Victoria Akhurst (Netley SC) continued their supreme reign on the Spitfire class, winning both races of the final day to round off a perfect week as the Spitfire Youth National Champions.

RS:X

The Wilson siblings, Daniel and emma from Christchurch, topped the rS:X leader board, upgrading their 2014 silver medals to gold.

Laser

henry Wetherell (Beaver SC) and Michael Beckett (Solva) picked up all but one race win between them in the Laser Standard. The training partners and rivals both finished well ahead of third place sailor Anthony Parke. The advantage this time went to Wetherell, who had the most consistent week finishing no lower than third in any race of the series.

Helena Lucas won Gold ahead of teammate Megan Pascoe. Image: Tomas Moya/Sofia

Princess Sofia Trophy GILeS Scott and helena Lucas secured final day victories at the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma on 4 April to bring the British Sailing Team’s medal tally to seven at this european seasonopening event. Scott, whose unbeaten

run spans eighteen months, took an eleven point buffer into the final medal race for the Finn class, while Lucas ground out a victory by just one point over teammate Megan Pascoe in the Paralympic 2.4mr event. Silver medals in Palma

went to Alison Young in the Laser radial, John Gimson-hannah Diamond in the Nacra 17 and Luke Patience-elliot Willis in the 470 Men’s event, with hannah Mills-Saskia Clark sealing bronze in the 470 Women’s class.

Viv Nanopoulou, rYA Youth Nationals Manager, said: “It has been a really fantastic event despite some tricky conditions at times. It was great to see such enthusiasm on the water from both those taking home medals and those racing at the Youth Nationals for the first time.” The rYA has also selected 28 sailors to represent Great Britain at the eUrOSAF Youth european Championships in Brest, France from 27 July - 2 August. Giles Scott has an incredible eighteen month unbeaten run. Image: Ocean Images/British Sailing Team

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH SAM JACKLIN, PRÉPARATEUR WHAT IS A PRÉPARATEUR?

The word préparateur literally means ‘to prepare’. It is my job to look after boats so that the skippers can focus on the finer details of racing. I work on the Class Figaro circuit, maintaining and making sure that the Artemis Offshore Academy’s fleet of Bénéteau Figaro IIs is ready for the British skippers to compete. Effectively a one-man shore crew, a préparateur works closely with the skipper and is trusted to prepare and repair the boat for racing as well as the sailor would do himself. My job list can range from basic daily maintenance to big collision or malfunction repairs.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF YOUR JOB?

Sam Jacklin is a préparateur at the Artemis Offshore Academy, which was set up in 2010 to bring up and coming British sailing talent up through the ranks into the highly competitive world of solo sailing.

Planning ahead, being able to work as a team and having a willingness to learn. Sailing and boats are always unpredictable, so it is really important that daily maintenance, yearly servicing and upgrades to the boats are planned and carried out as often and early as possible. This preparation frees me up to react to those inevitable but unexpected issues and repairs. The Academy is a growing entity with each successful year bringing more sailors to the team. Working with a squad comprised of sailors on their third

and fourth Solitaire du Figaro through to Rookies who are learning to sail solo means that there is always knowledge to be passed around.

YOU BEGAN AS AN APPRENTICE; TELL US HOW THAT CAME ABOUT. As the Artemis Offshore Academy grew, so did the need for a permanent préparateur to work alongside the squad. Having previously employed French préparateurs to aid the all British team, the Academy decided it was time to not only invest in UK sailing talent, but marine industry professionals as well. In France, being a préparateur is a highly respected and quite lucrative

career. In contrast to here in the UK, shore crew are very much on a level with the sailors they work alongside. The world’s best ocean racers rely heavily on their préparateurs and the ‘Proffesseur’ himself, Michel Desjoyeaux is of the mantra that a skipper is only as good as his shore crew. The Artemis Offshore Academy launched their Préparateur Apprenticeship scheme with an aim to develop a team of skilled British Préparateurs able to work on the offshore circuit. As soon as I heard about the initiative I applied straight away. Working for a year as an apprentice, I have since been employed full time as the Academy’s Junior Préparateur. I’m on the first rung of the ladder.

WHAT DOES YOUR AVERAGE DAY INVOLVE?

day work with them on their Vendée Globe campaign as boat captain.

There are two different days, a training day and a race day. On a training day I will see the sailors off the docks at 08:30, checking that all is ok with the boats. Then I spend the day meeting with riggers, sail makers, electronics companies and booking in work. Vital to ensuring the work we outsource gets done is tailoring your working day to French working hours. Nearly everything closes between 1200 and 1430, which means anything you urgently need to buy has to wait. During a race, I’ll be down on the boats as early as 04:00am to make sure that everything is ready to go. There is usually a three-day build up to a race, and in that time it is my job to keep checking the systems on board and rectify any problems. Come race day, I’m on the boats removing boom covers, checking the electrics and running the engine. I’m on hand to assist with any unexpected problems pre-start. Once the guide ropes are off and we’ve pushed the Figaros off the dock, all there is to do is sit tight and follow the tracker – waiting for news of any damages.

WHAT KIND OF SAILING DO YOU ENJOY FOR RELAXATION?

I am a sailor and any chance for me to get out on the water is my ideal way of relaxing, either sailing my own Rs200 or even aboard one of our Figaros. When I get the time I also like to try and catch up with friends and family, as in this job I spend half my year in France.

WHAT’S COMING UP IN 2015 FOR YOU?

2015 is a very busy season for the Academy. We had our first race in March followed by two more fairly long ‘practice’ races ahead of the main event – the 2089 mile Solitaire du Figaro. The Solitaire du Figaro is the highlight race in the Class Figaro calendar and considered the unofficial championships of solo offshore racing. The world’s best solo offshore racers turn out for the Solitaire and also a fleet of ambitious young Rookies (including ours) looking to kick start their career. This year the Solitaire starts in Bordeaux on the 31 May and we’ll be coming to the UK from 17 – 21 June in Torbay.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR CAREER GOING?

I would like to think that my career will continue to develop, perhaps to working with teams taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race, America’s Cup, Route du Rhum and other big setups. However, my dream job is to be able to progress alongside one of the Academy sailors I started with and one

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

Skipper Sam Matson and Sam Jacklin

The sailor who inspires me most isn’t known in the racing world, but is a very influential member of my home club Rick Newcombe. I love sailing because it is a sport that, contrary to popular belief, any one can do and be passionate about. My background in sailing is junior

racing, but I never really got any results. That never bothered me, as I just loved being on the water. Rick ran a lot of junior training at that time and eventually it turned into a training centre. As the sailing school grew, Rick gave me opportunities that ended up shaping my life skills. I was given the chance to teach all ages how to sail and then work with disabled groups and individuals, helping them to enjoy the sport. Rick taught me that sailing is a great avenue and can be rewarding for many. His dedication to getting people on the water is amazing and the joy I’ve seen on the faces of people who would never otherwise have the chance to sail has taught me that you don’t have to be a top racer to be a top sailor. I know I am very biased, but I would like to commend the work done by many at my home club, Exe Sailing Club, on their ‘Sailability project’. I also think Natasha Lambert (Miss Isle) is a true inspiration; her achievements to date are really impressive. We were side by side with her sip and puff Mini at the Southampton Boat Show, and I spent a lot of time talking to her Dad about the project.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?

If you are passionate about sailing there are many jobs within the sport that you can be involved in. You don’t have to be an amazing sailor, you don’t have to be aiming for the Olympics – there are so many avenues, you just need the passion.

SPECIAL FEATURE

ALL AT SEA MAY 2015

This month marks the 75th anniversary of Operation Dynamo, the remarkable evacuation that in May 1940 enlisted the service of any seaworthy small vessel to help bring home our stranded soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk.

A LITTLE SHIP’S BIG ADVENTURE

NATALIE DRAPER

AN ADVENTURE BEGINS

Caronia before her refit, having just been craned into Chichester Marina boatyard in 2008

WITH the German army moving ever closer to our isolated troops, hundreds of private pleasure yachts, fishing boats and other craft created a flotilla of hope for the troops trapped on the remote beaches as they tirelessly ferried back and forth between Dover and Dunkirk bringing home as many soldiers as they could. The assortment of lifesaving vessels were credited with bringing home over 330,000 soldiers in the days between 26 May and 4 June 1940. They later became known as The Dunkirk Little Ships. The endeavour of the Little Ships and the number of troops saved by their heroic actions deemed Operation Dynamo a valiant success and guaranteed the ships involved would be forever remembered in history. In 1966 The Association of Dunkirk Little Ships was founded after a reunion of a few of the

vessels involved indicated there were undoubtedly many other surviving craft who would not only like to discover their heritage but also be honoured to participate in commemorative events. To this day over 100 Little Ships of all sizes and occupation are registered with the Association, which continues to archive the history of each vessel and organise commemorative returns to Dunkirk under escort of the Royal Navy. The 75th Anniversary Return to Dunkirk is of special significance to one Little Ship in particular, as it represents the culmination of over a decade’s restoration, reconstruction and research by my father Peter Draper and brother Lewis Draper. Over the past thirteen years Caronia has been restored to her original Cornish glory and is now ready to embark on new adventures, with the events of the upcoming summer signalling the start of a new chapter for a vessel with almost 90 years of history in her planks.

It was a warm Saturday in September 2002 when my brother and I first stepped aboard Caronia. We were just seven and eleven, and none the wiser that our dad had actually bought the boat that we were eager to explore, having been deviously told it belonged to a friend. Walking around the deck and into the wheelhouse dad explained to us that Caronia was built in Newlyn in 1927 as a traditional St Ives fishing trawler, but had undergone major alterations befitting the change in the fishing industry and her owner’s use of her, most recently as a long term live aboard. Learning of her role as one of the Dunkirk Little Ships excited us to see more of this boat with so much character and history. Descending the reclaimed British Rail ladder into her saloon, we were greeted with a homely living space crafted into the hull which had once held pilchards in her days of trawling or ‘Going to Wolf’ in Newlyns waters. It was this point I noticed that the twin bunks in the saloon were both dressed in our own bedding from home, revealing that Caronia and all her adventures past and present were now a part of our family. Between 2002 and 2008 Caronia lived in the idyllic Birdham Pool, a quiet marina in the Chichester Harbour area. Stepping aboard as often as we could, we spent our summers picnicking out on deck and our winters playing board games in the cosy saloon. Learning to row, fish and sail, Caronia soon became our second home and even played host to a very special Christmas Day, with our dad proudly cooking an entire Christmas dinner in Caronia’s modest galley. The later addition of our ship’s dog Wilson completed our family crew and ensured more days spent on or by the water.

Carpentry repair work and reconstruction, installation of new steamed planks

75th Anniversary of Operation Dynamo 2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo. To commemorate the event, the Association of Dunkirk Little ships will have over 50 boats, escorted by the RNLI and the Royal Navy, taking part in the Return to Dunkirk. Many events will be taking place from 21 - 25 May.

Dunkirk Programme: ■ 21 May: Arrival of the Little Ships at the end of the afternoon (subject to weather conditions). The little ships will be welcomed on the quay by the period vehicles of the War & Peace display team. ■ 22 May 2:30pm: Commemorative ceremony at the British cemetery and memorial (route de Furnes) ■ 23 May 11:00am Commemorative ceremony at the Allied memorial on the beach (time to be confirmed) ■ 23 May 3:30pm: Parade in the streets of Dunkirk (marching bands, period military vehicles and cars...) ■ 24 May 10:00am: Ceremony on Zuydcoote beach to honour the victims of the Crested Eagle, a paddle steamer sunk in 1940. The wreck can still be seen at low tide. ■ 25 May morning: departure of the Dunkirk Little Ships.

Don’t miss it!

At around 8.30am (depending on the tide) on 21 May the Little Ships will leave Ramsgate Royal Harbour and sail to Dunkirk. A Hurricane and Spitfire of the Battle of Britain memorial Flight will fly past to pay tribute. They will be piped out by a local piper and accompanied by the Royal Navy and RNLI Find out what else is happening here: www.operationdynamo75th.co.uk

The Little Ships’ Story Operation Dynamo was led by Admiral Ramsay and saw all kinds of craft mobilised including many that had previously never ventured more than a few nautical miles from shore. They included fishing boats, dinghies and merchant ships. Over 300,000 soldiers from Britain, France and Belgium were rescued while thousands of guns, vehicles and tons of ammunition and fuel were abandoned. With the endless Nazi aerial bombardment, the torpedoes and the naval mines not everyone reached safety and many boat wrecks are located not far from the coast. In total it is thought close to 200 of the little ships were lost during the evacuation.

HISTORY UNVEILED

The more time we spent on Caronia, the more we learned about her and the more other Birdham Pool residents wanted to know. My father began researching Caronia and soon learned of other historical events she could be connected to, with previous owners and families coming forward with snippets of her timeline to create a rather eventful biography. In her early days as a trawler in Cornish waters reports were found of her coming to the aid of a floundering passenger liner, and later in the 1960s Caronia and her skipper found themselves on the wrong side of the law for running supplies out to cargo ship Mi Amigo, the broadcasting home to the infamous pirate radio station Radio Caroline. It became clear that Caronia was as important to others as she was to us and we had a duty to preserve the ship that gave so much. In 2005 preparations began for Caronia to participate in the 65th Anniversary Return to Dunkirk. As the first commemorative cruise to happen since owning Caronia, our family was eager to ensure she was amongst the flotilla. Despite being sailed to Chichester from her previous home, Caronia’s years as a live aboard had left her fairly unseaworthy and in desperate need of

repairs, both cosmetic and mechanical, before a trip of any length could be considered.

A NEW BEGINNING

RESTORATION BEGINS

A change of engine from her original but underpowered BMC 3.4 to a more substantial six-litre Leyland powered her to both the 65th Anniversary Dunkirk Return and the Fleet Review at Spithead in 2005. Although Caronia was now moving, a more reliable engine was only the beginning of what would become a decade of restorative work, returning her to a completely seaworthy condition, and a visage of her original Cornish heritage. In 2008 Caronia was relocated to the adjacent Chichester Marina. The move was necessary as due to her weighty 40 tonnes and equally imposing 40ft length, a much larger crane was required to lift her into the boatyard, ready for her complete overhaul and restoration. For almost two years Caronia lived out, receiving new planking, bulwarks, capping rail, wheelhouse and deck, the work undertaken almost entirely by Lewis and my father. With the steamed and re-corked woodwork complete, Caronia then received almost ten coats of paint. The trickier spots of her underbelly and keel were painted by Lewis, who wouldn’t even allow a broken leg plastered to the knee to slow the progress of Caronia’s completion, spending many days laid on his back adding the iconic Cornish blue to both the hull - and his cast. With just nine days to spare before the 70th Return to Dunkirk Caronia was re-launched in May 2010. Unfortunately prolonged bad weather prevented her from joining the other Little Ships for the crossing from Ramsgate to Dunkirk, but a break in the high winds allowed Caronia to meet up with the fleet once they were back in Ramsgate after the service in France.

BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT

Two years later Caronia sailed to London by Royal appointment, and on 3 June 2012 we all took part in the Diamond Jubilee Pageant, the celebratory flotilla of vessels invited to sail the Thames before her HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Despite the abysmal British weather, around one million people lined the banks of the

Thames and saw Caronia sail by as member of the historical contingent of vessels in the pageant. To assist us in negotiating the fifteen bridges of the Thames, and remain in the formation of the flotilla, our family was joined on board by three Royal Navy Ratings who had been given the opportunity to participate in the flotilla. This was second time the Royal Navy had boarded Caronia, the first time being in Newhaven when she was requisitioned for Operation Dynamo. Wilson was a particular hit in his bright orange lifejacket, attracting the attention of cameras on the bridges and banks, but also those of the media. Back at home we saw our trusty seadog on several media broadcasts of the pageant. It was a true family adventure to participate in such a historical event and a real milestone for Caronia, who thanks to her bright fresh paint could be easily identified in the flotilla by those watching at home.

The summer of 2013 saw Caronia return to her spot in Chichester Marina’s boatyard for a brief visit to have a much needed new engine installed. Despite the history and familiar tone of her Leyland, the older engine had become temperamental and lacked power, so was now destined to live out its own retirement in a vintage crane. A brand new Perkins M130C marked the start of a new chapter for Caronia, and along with a new BMC 1500 wing engine, custom made fuel tanks, new generator, shaft and propeller, she was ready for new adventures. 2014 saw Caronia stretch her new legs, travelling first to Oostende as a guest of their vast Oostende at Anchor festival and then later to the more local Southampton Maritime Festival. Each festival demonstrated the interest others share in Caronia, her heritage and hospitality, leading us to commence a new and exciting venture that will give others the experiences of being aboard such a special ship.

In late 2014 preparations began to return Caronia more frequently to the seas she was built to sail, and, with the acquisition of MCA Coding, we will be proud to offer the chance to charter Caronia from this summer. With all of the external carpentry, reconstruction and mechanical restoration complete, the last few months have been dedicated to completely refitting the saloon, to combine both home comforts and seafaring practicalities, befitting of her traditional style. The homely saloon has been reconstructed with comfortable bunks, a practical galley, a generous dining area and a new head. The refit of the former net hold into a private forward cabin offers further accommodation for guests, while the spacious engine room can comfortably accommodate our crew for a more private experience of chartering. With room for twelve people on day cruises and harbour tours, and ten for onboard parties or a static B&B experience with a difference, the adventures Caronia offers are limitless, something she has demonstrated countless times in her 88 years afloat. Caronia has become a significant part of our lives over the last decade and played quite an educational role in Lewis and I growing up. Now at 20 and 24, we’re thrilled to think that Caronia’s history will continue to be written and play a part in other people’s adventures.

keepinG traCk Nick Farrell, Director of YB Tracking, explains the many uses of tracking devices and the different options available.

In an age where we want to be able to share our news and photos with our loved ones and fellow boating friends as we experience new places, being able to quickly let them know where we are is becoming more important to many of us. You may not have the time (or you may just forget) to send updates back home, so whether you are cruising local waters or making a more ambitious voyage on your next holiday, a tracking device features a mapping interface so that friends and family can view your current track data via an online map. You don’t need to do anything when on board. Simply select how often you want the tracker to record your position – so you can spend time enjoying what you love most.

All AT SeA AUGUST 2012

Share the link You can give people the link to your tracking map/blog, or alternatively it can be embedded into an existing website so only those who you choose to see where you are have access to the page. A tracker can send lots of informative data to your friends and family, such as the distance you travelled during the last 24 hours and how far you have left to travel before you reach your destination.

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. What type iS beSt For me? There are different types of tracking and communication devices available for boat owners. There are fixed for a permanent installation or a handheld device for you to take on board when you choose to use it. Just like a mobile phone on land, some fixed trackers also give the option to use GSM networks so you don’t need to use satellite and can simply use terrestrial networks when in range. This can be an

especially useful feature when coastal cruising in the UK. If you choose a handheld portable version, you could even take it back on land with you, so if you are going for a long cycle or ramble whilst off the boat you can track this too. With a tracking and communications device you really can share your whole experience with everyone back home. https://www.ybtracking.com The YB3i Tracker is a tracking device designed for permanent use aboard

Fleet traCkinG Are you going for a cruise in company? Your entire fleet could have a tracking device on board and the marina you are visiting can easily keep a track of where you are. You can also view your historic track data so that you can re-trace your route when you return home. If you have some downtime during your holiday and want to share more with those back home, some tracking devices give the option to send short messages by email and SMS. You can also create short diary entries on a dedicated web page for your boat, so your followers really feel like they are part of your adventure.

The Power Behind Boats

BUYING A BOAT?

HAVE YOU GOT YOUR VOLVO PENTA PARTS FOR THIS SEASON?

Top Tips from Paul Brackenbury Managing Director and Chief Engineer at BBMS (Swanwick) Ltd.

Here are 5 top tips for anyone considering buying a boat: ■ Get a qualified marine engineer to inspect the engine before purchase or at least before you use it. Preferably a main dealer who knows what to look for with that particular brand of engine. Main dealers have the backing of the brand with international support and all the new parts have a warranty, even if your engine/drive itself is out of warranty. Main dealers are the experts for their brand. ■ ‘Low hours’ is not always a good thing on marine engines. If the boat is a few years old with low hours ensure that when it wasn’t in use it was in a ‘winterised’ state. Remember: you wouldn’t park a car next to a beach, leave it for a few months and then expect a turn key start. Engines need to be run and used to be well lubricated.

C E N T R E

It’s better to have them and not need them rather than need them and not have them!

■ Choose the engineer who services the engine prior to sale if possible. BBMS have been out to so called ‘fully serviced’ boats to find the oil has not even been changed even though they were sold on the promise of recent service. If you use a main dealer for brands such as ours the service is registered online for all other dealers to see, listing the parts used. ■ Get a breakdown membership such as Sea Start for when you are out to sea, 24/7, as faults happen regardless of how spanking new or fully serviced the boat may be. ■ Do ensure you at least have: life vests, a working radio, a kill chord (attached) and an anchor before you go out. RYA FOCUS

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

BY EMMA SLATER

Get into boating It’s that time of year again when the RYA is getting ready to Push The Boat Out for nine fun packed days.

between 9-17 May, James is urging others to follow his lead.

MAKE A CHANGE

James said: “Sailing has changed all our lives in the best way possible. When I had seen boats out on the water close to my home in Derbyshire I always assumed it was people who owned boats getting together and going for a sail. I had no idea there were clubs there let alone how big, well-developed and ‘professional’ the clubs were.” “There is still this perception that sailing clubs will be exclusive, ‘snobby’ places but I know from first-hand experience that could not be further from the truth. Everyone we have met has been very down-to-earth, and even people we might never have met before are still so happy to help me with setting the boat up or give their advice.“ “I think people see sailing equipment and think ‘Wow that looks expensive, I wish I had the money to do something like that’ without realising that they can!” Although James’ wife initially bought him RYA Level 1 Learn to Sail lessons after doing her research, all the family got a taste of what lay ahead when they attended Burton’s annual Open Day last May.

OPEN DAYS

RYA Push the Boat Out is all about introducing newcomers of all ages and abilities to sailing Image: RYA/Paul Wyeth

HAVE you had a sailing taster session but didn’t know how to take it further, or maybe you’ve had a lifelong interest in taking up the sport but have never known where to start? You might be surprised at just how accessible sailing clubs are. As RYA Push The Boat Out 2015 looms, sailing newcomer James Wheeler says if he can do it, so can you! “I never even knew that you didn’t need to own a boat to go sailing!” said James Wheeler as he reflected on his first year as a sailor.

DID YOU KNOW? Push the Boat Out is an RYA initiative which was first created as part of the RYA Sail for Gold Programme which was launched in March 2011.

DREAMS INTO REALITY

Rewind twelve months and sailing was just a pipedream for the Derbyshire-based company director. A love of the sea spawned from growing up in Ostend, Belgium had been replaced by a reluctant, ultimately misguided, acceptance that living in the Midlands meant he would be unlikely to fulfil his ambition of learning to sail, until later in life at least. Although he had seen boats sailing on the lake at the local country park, he had no idea that he was actually surrounded by buoyant sailing clubs. James had not realised how easy is was to get afloat so close to home, especially living almost as far from the sea as is possible in this country. Thanks to the investigative persistence of his wife, Zoe, James’s family, including nine-year-old daughter Jessica, suddenly had their eyes opened to a life they never thought was possible at Burton Sailing Club. Now, as Britain prepares to Push The Boat Out with free and low cost ‘have-a-go’ opportunities for all at some 300 sailing clubs and watersports centres nationwide

Just like thousands of people nationwide will over the nine days of RYA Push The Boat Out, the Wheelers got their first taste of what sailing clubs are really like and how easy it is to learn to sail and join a welcoming, friendly club wherever you live. James described the Open Day as ‘perfect’ as the trio went out in a Flying 15 keelboat with an experienced club member, taking it in turns to helm, trim the sails and simply enjoy being on the water. A couple of social drinks in the bar and a BBQ broke down any lingering misconceptions the Wheelers had about sailing. There was no pressure to join, just a warm professionalism that told them how they could. Since completing his Level 1 course, James has fully embraced club life at Burton. He has done his Level 2, undertaken powerboat safety training to start volunteer duties and discovered a competitive streak on the water he never knew he had. Jess, meanwhile, has loved taking part in kids’ fun days at the club, while she and Zoe will probably tackle their RYA Stage 1 and Level 1 certificates respectively this coming summer. Jess, then eight, has already had a go at crewing for her dad in a 420, a moment James described as “nerve-wracking” being responsible for his daughter’s safety on the water for the first time. But although still building up his own confidence and skills, he is looking ahead at the boat he might eventually like to invest in, having taken advantage of Burton SC’s free club boat hire for members over the past year. He added: “We have only scratched the surface with club life. This time last year I could not have imagined the life we have discovered on our doorsteps, but I am so pleased we have.”

HAVE A GO

James and Jess Wheeler take to the water

RYA Push the Boat Out is a nationwide festival of sailing and windsurfing introducing newcomers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to the sports. Last year 260 clubs and centres in Britain hosted Push the Boat Out events with 17,000 people trying sailing or

James is now thinking about which boat he is going to invest in

windsurfing for the first time over one weekend. But with this year’s Push The Boat Out running over nine days - two weekends and five weekdays - even more people will have the chance to have a go and discover how easy it is to learn to sail and join a sailing club across the country. Each Open Day and taster session will be different depending on what activities each club or centre offers, but all Push The Boat Out events are geared to appeal to the widest possible range of people. They showcase what the sports are really all about, from the freedom of being on the water to the social buzz of club life, and highlighting just how accessible sailing actually is to everyone. All you need for any club Open Day or ‘have a go’ sessions are a warm clothes, soft-soled shoes and a waterproof; the clubs and centres will provide anything else you need. Booking is essential for some of the activities. Refreshments will be available and a friendly smile guaranteed as BBQs and other social activities also take place to give newcomers a warm welcome. In 2014, Britain’s sailing clubs gained more than 1,000 personal memberships through Push The Boat Out with more than 500 families also becoming members of the clubs they visited. COOKING AFLOAT REAL FOOD FOR HUNGRY SAILORS

Brown shrimps with borlotti beans and cherry tomatoes

These little beauties pack a punch in the flavour department. The best are the tiny, sweet crustaceans found on the tidal sands of Morecambe Bay and along the north Norfolk coast, and are a classic ingredient in potted shrimps. But North Sea brown shrimps are almost as good and easy to find at the fishmonger or in certain supermarkets, cooked, minus their shells, in 90g packs; or you can, of course, replace them with regular Atlantic cooked prawns. The different hues of pink in this salad look rather fetching, too.

In a bowl, combine the shrimps, beans, tomatoes, shallots and parsley. Drizzle with the oil, squeeze the lemon over and season. Serve piled on to toasted sourdough, or as a salad with some ready-washed leaves stirred through.

FOR FOUR ■ 180g cooked and shelled brown shrimps ■ 1 x 400g tin borlotti beans, rinsed and drained ■ 250g cherry tomatoes, halved ■ 1 shallot, peeled and finely chopped, or 3 spring onions, trimmed and sliced ■ handful of flat-leaf parsley, chopped ■ 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil ■ juice of 1 lemon ■ salt and pepper

Towering Over The Solent

By: David Chisnall OBE

More than 2,000 volunteer National Coastwatch Institution watch keepers play an increasing role in keeping us safe at sea. They provide the eyes and ears along the coast working with the emergency services. We spotlight the history of the organisation and one of its busiest operation centres. In 1994 when two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast below a recently closed Coastguard lookout, local people decided to open and restore the visual watch. When the first station was opened at Bass Point on the Lizard, nCI was born. Today 50 stations with more than 2,000 volunteers keep a visual watch around the coastline of England and Wales, with more in the pipeline subject to available funding. Stations have been set up along the coast from Rossall Point in the north West, through Wales, to Sunderland in the north East. Each station has a qualified and highly trained team keeping a daylight watch up to 365 days a year.

Over 200 leisure vessels can be within sight of the tower on a typical weekend day

DID YOU KNOW? The National Coastwatch Institution was set up in 1994 to restore a visual watch along UK shores after many small Coastguard stations closed.

Calshot NCI occupies the tower at the end of Calshot Spit at the seaward end of Southampton Water

The nCI provides a vital link with all the emergency services and can provide a contact point on land for people both at sea and on shore. The service is also available for radio checks on channel 65 to take pressure off busy Coastguard stations.

KEEPING A LOOK OUT

More than 190,000 hours of organised coastal surveillance were completed in 2011 alone, all at no cost to the public.

Funding is managed by a Board of Trustees with a constitution agreed by the Charity Commission and relies heavily on local support. The nCI says: “Accidents will always happen at sea and along the coastline. Wherever there is an nCI station a watch keeper will be looking out for danger and ensuring your safety on the water. While high technology and sophisticated systems are aids to improved safety, a

INTEGRAL ROLE

Close contact with the Maritime Coastguard Agency aims to promote stations to Declared Facility Status in order to be come an integral part of the national Search and Rescue Structure. Full training ensures that volunteers reach the high standard expected by the nCI and MCA. Regular assessments take place at all stations and retraining programmes are held to maintain standards and keep volunteers up-to-date with the latest legislation or improved operational procedures. They keep a visual watch, monitoring radio channels, using radar and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. Surveillance work is mainly routine but watchers are trained to act in an emergency, report to the MCA and, if required, co-ordinate with the search and rescue services. A log of all water-based activities is kept during each watch and, when requested, weather conditions can be passed to yachtsmen and fishermen before they put to sea.

The lookout viewing platform is 100ft above sea level and has a 360° view

computer cannot spot a distress flare, an overturned boat or a yachtsman or fisherman in trouble. Other vulnerable activities like diving, wind surfing and canoeing are also made safer with visual surveillance.”

TOWERING OVER THE SOLENT

Calshot nCI occupies the tower at the end of Calshot Spit at the seaward end of Southampton Water – one of the busiest commercial shipping and leisure boating areas in the UK. The lookout viewing platform is 100ft above sea level and has a 360° view over Southampton Water and the Solent with a horizon distance of 11nm. The spit is a one-mile long sand and shingle bank that houses Calshot Castle built by Henry VIII and now owned by English Heritage. The former RAF site is now the base for the Calshot Activities Centre and the RnLI lifeboat station and the adjoining tower. The tower is owned by Associated British Ports and was built in 1973 as part of the Southampton VTS radar chain. It served as a Coastguard lookout from 1974 until the 1990s and was opened as an nCI station in July 2010. There are 38 permanent buoys and marks visible from the tower and another two dozen landmark points that would be used in specifying a location for SAR purposes. To a large extent this supersedes traditional Lat and Long bearing and distance position fixing for immediate urgent direction of local rescue services. The station’s area of responsibility extends as far as watch keepers can see. On a clear day this can be to the Palmerston Forts at the eastern end of the Solent. With 70 trained watch keepers and twelve trainees the station is open during daylight hours 364 days a year. The Station’s primary point of contact is Solent Coastguard at Lee-on-Solent. Shifts are staffed by at least two watch keepers. The station may be opened outside these hours at the request of HMCG. Kit in the lookout includes binoculars

and two powerful telescopes, pelorus, and five VHF radios receiving channels 0, 16, 12, 67 and 65, which is the specific channel for craft requesting radio checks and other local information.

ON THE MOVE

The port of Southampton has constant commercial traffic including the world’s largest cruise ships, container vessels and oil tankers, as well as regular car ferry and high-speed ferry services. More than 6,500 major vessel movements were logged by volunteer watch keepers in 2011. It is common for more than 200 leisure vessels to be within sight of the tower on a typical weekend day – and more like 2,000 during Cowes Week and major racing events.

ELECTRONICS BEGINNER’S GUIDE

Perfect Match

A beginner’s guide to Marine Electronics, by Nick Meadow, UK OEM Technical Sales Executive at Garmin Europe.

WIth such a vast range of marine electronics available for all types of boaters, choosing the right products can be very daunting for beginners. From fishfinders to autopilots it is important to make sure the products you buy suit you and your boat. Marine electronics have become an essential part of boating for mariners of all types due to recent advances in technology. these advances have meant that on-board safety is now vastly improved, which is something of particular importance for beginners on the water.

vhF radIos

For any boater, a VhF radio is an essential piece of electronics equipment to have onboard any boat as it is your primary communications channel. VhF radios can issue immediate voice broadcasts and digital information such as your location to emergency frequencies Users can quickly and easily transmit a position, accurate to other boaters in the vicinity, as well as alerting the rescue services. Unlike a mobile phone a VhF will always work and will not lose signal. Before purchasing a VhF device, however, it is essential that you get your radio licence as there are heavy penalties for failing to ensure that you and your vessel are legally covered. the RYA VhF Radio course provides

For instance, GPS is something that many people take for granted these days and it is an excellent safety feature that lets you know your exact location at any given time. Add radar, AIS, DSC communications, satellite communication and features such as autopilots and the modern boat, when kitted out correctly, is unrecognisable from what it looked like even 20 years ago. It is worth noting that though GPS is very reliable it is recommended that paper charts are carried and an understanding of how to use them is also gained.

you with the short-range certificate and includes training for DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and GMDSS (Global Maritime and Safety System). When you receive your licence, you will be given your own unique call sign and MMSI number that can be used when making a distress call, in order that the Coastguard can match it up with your boat’s details. Many VhF radios are now equipped with an automated digital distress signal. In an emergency, boaters can press a ‘distress’ button that sends your GPS position and identity to other vessels and rescue services within range. It Is also worth considering a chartplotter that will send specific details of the emergency and provide a step-by-step emergency process

Chartplotters

Chartplotters start in price from around £300 and the more expensive units can cost several thousands pounds. Even the most basic chartplotters provide detailed GPS information that was not available to recreational boaters just a few years ago. the increase in price is often due to larger, high-resolution hD colour screens allowing the user to zoom out and see more detail. As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the screen the better. Chartplotters often have multifunction capability – which means that they can display information

The echoMAP™ 95sv is a chartplotter/sonar combination unit

from other devices on the boat. these MFDs (multi-function displays) are excellent for boaters with smaller vessels as all the information you need is displayed in one place, but on larger vessels users tend to fit an array of screens. If you’re considering

after the ‘SOS’ button is pressed. these are useful functions as they help you to identify what your emergency is and will provide you with a script detailing exactly what you should tell the Coastguard. Both hand-held and mounted VhF radio options are available and which device you buy depends entirely on your needs as a boater and crucially the size of your boat. handheld radios are primarily used by smaller boat owners as there are no issues involved with connecting up the radio and running wires around the boat. however, as handhelds radios are relatively inexpensive and quality items, boaters with larger vessels should consider purchasing a handheld as a backup to their mounted device.

Where should I Install my boat eleCtronICs? It is worth putting some thought into where you install your electronics on your vessel. traditionally chartplotters were always installed near to the chart table, however with today’s multifunction devices, electronics tend to be fitted where boaters spend most of their time, which could be in sight of the helms. Many chartplotters now have capability to use an android or iOS device as a second station, possibly below deck, out of the elements.

an MFD chartplotter it is worth considering dual screen capability, which allows you to display and compare two separate screens of information. You should also think about whether you want a touchscreen display or a more traditional button interface. touchscreen chartplotters are great tactile devices that bring a new level of control to your fingertips. Pinchto-zoom is a great feature you can make use of through touchscreen technology, allowing you to zoom in on whatever information you want to focus on. A button interface will tend to have the same features as a touchscreen unit, style Transporting boats 1950s only with a corresponding button for the desired action. Although this means the chartplotter requires more interaction, it is often the preferable choice if you know you’re going to be exposed to colder temperatures as you can press the buttons while wearing gloves.

there are lots of other marine electronics you might wish to consider purchasing including fishfinders, radar, autopilots and marine instruments. Safety, by having as much information on your vessel’s surrounding and environment as possible, is most definitely a key consideration when

“Any boater should be able to deal with and often avoid emergency situations with the right electronics on board” purchasing marine electronics. the industry has come forward leaps and bounds in this area, so any boater should be able to deal with and often avoid emergency situations with the right electronics on board. the most important thing to remember when you are choosing any marine electronics and navigation products is that you get the equipment that suits the needs of you and your boat. www.garmin.com

BLOOD MONEY Lower deck name for what was officially termed Bounty Money – monies paid to crews for sinking an enemy vessel. Blood money was however the more honest appellation since the amounts were reckoned not on the size or importance of the enemy ship but rather on the numbers of crew slaughtered. At one time this was as high as five guineas for every man killed.

t s e b s Weymouth bite

ALL AT SEA MAY 2015

Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

With more bars than you can shake a stick of rock at and a thriving music scene with some excellent food choices, it is no surprise that Weymouth draws in big crowds.

WEYMOUTH is a popular summer stopoff whilst heading west and a great holiday destination, especially if you have the kids on board. There are oodles of things to do here. Weymouth offers a choice of marina berth or harbour mooring, with some swinging moorings outside the harbour walls. You can ask the Harbourmaster for more details. I berthed at the ever friendly, welcoming Weymouth Marina, asked the boys for their best bites and headed into town. Weymouth is a free spirit. The bunting is always up in the back streets. The shop owners, restaurant runners and business bosses nearly always chipper. They loved the Olympics, eventually, and they are the family face of the Jurassic Coast. Yes, this is fresh fish heaven. And the usual question I ask the locals is – where is the best Fish & Chips? There are two camps here: Marlborough, on the sea front (famous for introducing the mackerel bap and earning huge support from Hugh FW in the process) or Fish n Fritz, which is a lovely, clean, tiled restaurant a couple of streets back that offers ‘Suspended Coffee’ – I like that. Top end fish can be found at the Dining Room, and if you ever get the chance try their ‘You catch, we cook’.

Local favourites ■ Deli, Charlbury Corner ■ Rossis Ice Cream ■ The George Bar & Grill (a percentage of sales go to the RNLI) ■ Coffee#1 - Now I know this is a chain, but so is the Stable, which we all love. It’s a nice clean building, good meeting place and the pastries are really fresh. I recommend the Portuguese Custard Tart and you have a choice of blends. ■ Other options are the traditional Suttons Coffee House and Bibi’s does a very good Italian roast. ■ Fish Market - It is on the Quay and open every day, run by a friendly family firm called Weyfish.

Thought up by dynamic duo Em and Clem Carter (Emma runs B+B Weymouth and Clem is a professional fisherman), Clem takes people out and what they bring back into port is cooked by Taher. A wonderful day with excellent edible results - a special treat. This awardwinning restaurant has Taher Jibet at the helm; he also runs a cookery school.

FROM THE STREETS

Mark Packer: “Bournemouth has a beach, Poole has a harbour, Weymouth has both. Helen’s Wholefoods is a local treasure. For more traditional seaside fare, head to Fish’n’Fritz in town, then stroll along the prom for ice-cream at Rossi’s, opposite the Jubilee Clock.

Another favourite is the Red Lion with great pub food, well kept beer and live music on Sundays. There is lots going on in the convivial Hope Square.

The Bike & Hike

need to know

THE BIKE - take the Rodwell Trail out past ASDA to Chesil Beach. You can stop off at Taste in the wonderful stone and glass Wildlife Centre half way along the causeway. Then continue on to Portland, and if the legs and lungs are up for it make your way to Cyclecino – a marriage of coffee and cycle cool. The cake is not bad either. Bike hire from the marina, Jurassic Electric or Signpost Cycling. THE HIKE - take the trail through the Wetlands/Bird Sanctuary just north of Weymouth Marina and enjoy the wildlife - ask Neil.

For history, visit the Nothe Fort, at the entrance of the harbour.” Andy McLaughlin: “Best thing? Proximity to Portland, a fantastic isthmus with views to die for. Pet hate is the inability of the locals to accept change, even if it is of benefit (e.g. new intelligent traffic system).”

www.visit-dorset.com www.jurassiccoast.org

Buy your oysters at Weyfish

And for in between you have my all time favourite The Stable, right on the quay. The George, next door, shares the same fabulous views over the commercial fishing boats DBC comes out as a favourite friendly, reliable Best Bite in Weymouth. Following their growing success they have now relocated to bigger premises near the station. Opposite is the Dorset Real Pie & Ale Shop, which is also worth a visit.

The Jurassic Coast: A Mighty Tale video: http://bit.ly/JurassicCoastTale Rodwell Trail and many other cycle routes: www.gps-routes.co.uk Well connected? PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

UNDERSTANDING A RACE START Successful execution of the start is often the most influential factor in a sailing race, explains British Sailing Team 470 sailor Anna Burnet.

British Sailing Team 470 sailor Anna Burnet

THIS is particularly true for dinghy and inshore racing because a shorter race emphasises the need to start well and gain an early advantage on competitors. There are a number of factors to take into account when considering how to approach a start. Implementing a pre-start plan is a great way of ensuring you have all the knowledge you need to start well and with the best chance for a successful first beat. Within a pre-start plan be sure to incorporate checks of rig set-up, wind patterns, line bias and transits. Knowing where to focus attention within

5 minute, warning signal:

Start your stopwatch (preferably two stopwatches) and double check the committee boat for the course number and bearing to the windward mark. Take a head to wind bearing to compare the two numbers. This will highlight if the windward mark has been offset to one side of the beat, a factor that could be very important to your first decision.

Establishing a regular routine will help to enhance your confidence in the start

has already been pre-empted, heads can generally remain in the boat and focussed on maintaining speed. Sailors who haven’t prepared for their first decision are likely to either miss an opportunity or lose speed as their focus wanders to what is going on around them.

1 minute, preparatory flag down:

4 minute, preparatory signal:

Most importantly, note which flag is being used – P, I, U, Z or Black – check your Racing Rules as to which ones to watch out for. The different preparatory flags will have an implication on your approach to the start line. For example, if the ‘black’ flag is used, you cannot cross the line in the last minute of the start and therefore you may need to line up further away and with enough space to safely manoeuvre behind the line Continue to check the wind bearing until as late as possible, to ensure that you are confidently in phase with the shift pattern. At this stage you should be aware of the first decision you are going to be making and how this will tie in with the first beat strategy.

Depending on the flag being used, at this stage in the start you need to be in your desired starting position and lined up with enough room to accelerate onto the line. Ensure there is a constant stream of communication to the helm regarding time and distance to the line. If you have timed your run up as part of a pre-start routine, this can be used to call when to trigger the acceleration. Be prepared to react quickly if surrounding boats do decide to accelerate earlier than you anticipated.

Even with the best preparation for a start, there is no guarantee that it will all go to plan. In the event of a setback, the key is to stay calm and revert to the information you have gained. Once out of danger, the next decision you make should revert to the priorities you had for the first beat and all will not be lost.

Start, class flag down:

Maximum speed across the line, with an immediate focus on the sail set-up. This is much easier if you are pulling the sails in to the same markers as decided in the pre-start rig check. As the first decision

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS

CHICHESTER MARINA Chichester Marina, Birdham, Chichester, West Sussex PO20 7EJ www.premiermarinas.com

SET in the beauty of a natural harbour and picturesque countryside, Chichester is arguably the prettiest marina in the south, with its modern boatyard and tranquil backdrop. Chichester is actually one of the UK’s largest marinas, offering seventeen miles of amazing channels to explore by boat – with easy access to Chichester Harbour, East Head and the popular cruising grounds of the Solent.

A safe and secure locked marina with over 1,000 berths, the marina combines state-of-the-facilities and serene surroundings, making it a worthy recipient of the Yacht Harbour Association’s Five Gold Anchors Award. Family friendly and ideal for boaters of all abilities, it is an ideal base for nature and bird watching, walking in the countryside, or just soaking up the ambiance whilst relaxing on board your boat.

FACILITIES

CHICHESTER Marina was one of the first marinas to be constructed in Britain, opening in the mid-1960s. In September 2013 a new purpose-built boatyard and boatshed costing £3.5 million was completed, replacing the old 1960s building that stood on the site. Its sensitive architecture preserves the natural beauty of the harbour, whilst still offering a host of modern marine services in a single location. The perfect location for both yachts and powerboats giving easy access to the Solent and beyond; Chichester Marina offers in-water berthing for 1,100 boats up to 22m (max beam 7m, 2.3 draft) and also Versadock and trailer sailer options for smaller craft including RIBs, small power boats and motorboats up to 8m. There are competitively priced annual berthing contracts that can be paid on an annual or a monthly basis. Chichester’s experienced boatyard team provide year-round lift, high-pressure wash and block-off and relaunch services that include the use of two hoists: a 65 tonne hoist located on the south side of the marina and a 35 tonne hoist on the north side.

LOCAL EATERIES

VISITORS and berth holders don’t have to go far for great food and a lively atmosphere. The Boat House Cafe is a relaxed eatery with plenty of seating inside and outside on a balcony overlooking the harbour. Serving an ever-changing, seasonal menu, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The onsite Yacht Club has over 1,300 members, both sailing and motorboat

enthusiasts, and sits in a prime location overlooking the harbour and within walking distance of the marina. The large modern clubhouse has a relaxing spacious bar and a comfortable restaurant serving snacks and full meals. If you want to go further afield the traditional Crown & Anchor pub, located in Dell Quay, is a popular destination for walkers and can be easily accessed by the shore.

At the heart of Chichester Marina is the state-of-theart boatyard with a boatshed for storing boats up to 50ft – perfect for working with temperature sensitive technologies. Besides Premier’s boatyard, Chichester Marina has a fantastic mix of onsite marine tenants. These companies offer everything from rigging services to marine electronics, cosmetic work as well as engineering and fabrication. Chichester Marina also benefits from extensive storage ashore, coupled with Chichester onsite marine services, which make Chichester’s boatyard offering among the best on the South Coast for major repairs and routine maintenance. Chichester’s award winning facilities also include luxury toilets and showers, a Coastal and Outdoor Living clothing store, a variety of boat sales and two onsite restaurants. Chichester Marina also boasts its own chandlery, the Marine Super Store that offers everything from waterproofs, flares, ropes, anchors to specialist items such as fittings and charts. From 1st April it also started to operate a small convenience store from its premises, selling a range of fresh foods and daily essentials.

ACCESS

TO Chichester by road: From the Chichester bypass (A27), take the A286 following signs for the Witterings. At the Stockbridge Roundabout take the second exit – A286 signposted Bracklesham, Witterings. After two miles turn right into Chichester Marina. Fast trains run between London Victoria and Chichester. Gatwick airport is just one hour fifteen minutes from Chichester

CRUISING

THE Solent is a sailing playground on the South Coast of England. Chichester Marina is set in a prime location for sailors to pop over to the Isle of Wight for the day or take a more leisurely cruise to visit one of Premier’s other Solent marinas. Many sailors choose to discover the calm waters of Beaulieu River and tranquillity of Lymington Harbour.

Marina by road. Private aircraft may land at Goodwood Aerodrome. This airfield is just five miles from the marina. Approach by sea via west pole beacon – cross over Chichester Bar located at the entrance to the harbour. Once inside the harbour you need to head north-east past East Head and towards Itchenor to arrive at the marina. Marina approach channel – Vessels entering the marina should keep to

NESTLED at the foot of the South Downs, Chichester is surrounded by beautiful countryside, sandy beaches, fishing villages and historical and family attractions including Goodwood House and Racecourse. Chichester Marina is located at the eastern end of Chichester Harbour, just 4 miles from the historic city of Chichester. It is a city perfectly placed for all the arts. For lovers of culture The Pallant House Gallery is a must see and Chichester Festival Theatre is one of the finest regional theatres in the country. Chichester Cathedral, which has stood at the heart of Chichester for 900 years and is famous for its art, both ancient and modern, is also an iconic landmark and continues to attract thousands of visitors for its stunning architecture.

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS Robert Britt has been at Chichester Marina for over 10 years and has berthing for two boats. “Marina life at Chichester Marina is easy going with a village atmosphere. It’s the total package – staff are excellent, the ladies in the Marina Reception is always very helpful and Rob on the lock is great – he knows the names of my grandchildren and we have a joke as we bump our way through. First class facilities and staff, wonderful cruising area,

easy access with car parking at the head of pontoon. Chichester has everything, whether you want to race, cruise or just sit and admire others messing about in boats. The marina is generally well maintained, I like the people and visitors. It’s a very relaxed place to start from or just to sit and have a glass of something. Security is unobtrusive, but it works well and service wise, Holman Rigging are excellent.” Boat Name – Sara/Norfolk Gypsy, 7.3

Alternatively you can give the marina a call ahead of your arrival on 01243 512731.

Chichester is an excellent base for trips to Premier’s Brighton and Eastbourne marinas, where berth holders can take advantage of their 42 free visitor nights with Premier. Note, a south-westerly wind can cause disruptions on the return from Brighton and Eastbourne Marina. Go a little further afield and the Channel Islands, Cherbourg and the Brittany coastline can all be easily explored.

THINGS TO DO

the starboard side of the channel. Chichester Bar is located at the entrance to the harbour and is dredged to approximately 1.5m below chart datum giving a depth of 2m at Mean Low Water Springs. However, the bottom can vary up to 0.75m. With an ebb tide and strong southerly winds, it is advisable to exercise caution and cross the Bar between three hours before and one hour after high water springs. Vessels entering the marina should keep to the starboard side of the channel at a maximum speed of 6 knots. Unless requested to do so by the lock keeper, vessels must not overtake in the approach channel. Larger vessels may be given priority in exceptional circumstances.

A short drive (just outside Chichester) will take you to the village of Fishbourne, where the remains of Fishbourne Roman Palace and gardens lie; one of the outstanding Roman sites in the UK. Further round the harbour lies Bosham, a quintessentially English village with thatched-roofed cottages around a village green and on the coast itself, pastel-painted fishermen’s homes overlooking the water. Some of the greatest beaches are close by too including the sandy beaches of East Head and The Witterings. The region enjoys the beauty of the extensive, natural sheltered area of Chichester Harbour, together with long, sandy, unspoilt coastline stretching from West Wittering Beach to Bracklesham Bay.

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS DAVID Pummell was at Brighton Premier Marinas before coming to Premier Chichester Marina over a year ago. “I was at Brighton before, but there is so much to do here. It is a beautiful place. I have since moved house to Fishbourne. The new boatyard is great, I had no problems with getting lifted in and out and the staff are so helpful. I quite often use The Boat House Cafe and the onsite chandlery – where the new grocery shop is a massive advantage. I looked at several marinas and Chichester was by far the cheapest with the best facilities and better value. The toilets and showers are of high-quality. The marina is so friendly, the staff are outstanding and if I go down there for the weekend and stay it is like being on holiday – like in Devon or Cornwall. You can walk along to the Crown & Anchor pub and watch the world go by in a beautiful setting”

IN THE DRINK

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.

often at only five euros a litre if you take your own container and fill it directly from the vat. Corbières mostly features the Carignan grape variety: rich ruby red, spicy, full body and fruity. Prieuré Saint-Jacques was priced at £6.49 for 75cl bottle at 12.5 per cent at my local Waitrose. Minervois wines are named after the historical village of Minerve, just north of Corbières. The vines were introduced by Roman legionaries and folklore claims that Cicero and Pliny were among Minervois lovers. Typically they are deep red with the rich aroma of ripe plums, well structured when young and quite tannic and silky after two or three years in a cellar. I found a meaty 14 per cent Gérard Bertrand Minervois from Syrah and Carignan grapes at £10 for the 75cl bottle.

£6 at my local shop and very tasty at a robust 14.5 per cent. Fitou, perhaps the most well known of all Languedocs, claims Greek planting around 500 BC and then later the Romans improved the wines. It was already famous at the time of Louis XIV’s reign when the Canal du Midi (Royal de Languedoc) was built. It is rich with taste notes of Mediterranean herbs and berry fruits and a touch of pepper. Mme Claude Parmentier is an excellent example at 12.5 per cent and £8 a bottle. Go with a Languedoc wine and you won’t go far wrong. There are many more to discover, especially if you visit the region. Check out www.locaboat.com or www.leboat.co.uk for info.

COMMERCIAL TO CHARTER

The commercial through-traffic has gone and the Canal du Midi has become a favourite for charter boat holidays. Tranquil countryside, vineyards and wine cellars along the banks, mediaeval castles, tow-path walks, canal-side bistros to enjoy and walled cities and châteaux to admire. The canal forms the northern boundary of the Languedoc AOC region, sometimes called Languedoc-Roussillon, which stretches southwards to the French/Spanish border at Banyuls and is contained on the west by the Pyrenees and on the east by the Mediterranean.

WINE SUB-REGIONS

It is organised as a giant cooperative which gives rise to several wine sub-regions, like Corbières, Minervois, Costières de Nîmes and Fitou, all widely available in our shops. Along the canal you will find many ‘caves’ where you can buy them,

ON 15 May 1694, France’s Royal Canal de Languedoc was completed, running from Toulouse to Montpellier with access to the Mediterranean Sea at Sète. In 1789 it was renamed by French revolutionaries as Canal du Midi (south). In 1856, a direct link was dug at Toulouse to the Canal de Garonne which runs to Bordeaux on the Atlantic coast. This created the so-called Canal des Deux Mers for the combined route, Atlantic to the Med, and a major commercial waterway for the wheat trade particularly.

Costières de Nîmes vineyards are between Nîmes and the Petit Rhône, near the Camargue. It is quite different from other Languedoc appellations, due to the unique small pebbles called ‘galets’ in the soil. Carignan, Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grapes are all clues to look out for. The reds are rich and fruity, quite close to Rhônes, and the rosés are light and dry. Esprit des Trois Pierres (red) was a good buy at
