FROM PAGE 1: The AC45 seen sailing on the Solent is the boat that originally raced under Ben Ainslie Racing colours during the America’s Cup World Series in 2012-13, and has subsequently been modified to fly on hydrofoils. Team principal and skipper, Sir Ben Ainslie commented: “Ten months ago we had nothing, so to be out there today foiling in one of these boats – after such a short time frame – is the result of a huge amount of effort from all of the team, especially the shore team and the designers. “For us sailors it’s a real privilege to get out there and sail one of these boats. It’s been a great first day and it’s a good start, but it’s only a start and we have a lot of work to do over the coming months.” Ben Ainslie Racing was launched on 10 June 2014 in the presence of the Duchess of Cambridge. The team was conceived by four times Olympic gold medallist and 34th America’s Cup winner, Sir Ben, with the long-term aim of challenging for Britain and bringing the America’s Cup back home to where it all began in 1851 - something Britain has so far never managed to achieve.

All seven Volvo Ocean Race boats have tasted the lead at least once during five extraordinary days of racing since setting off from Alicante in a race that is re-writing the offshore rule-book. It was always suspected that the competition would be close for the 12th edition of the 41-year-old event, which is introducing a one-design boat, the Volvo Ocean 65, for the first time. But never quite this tight! Team SCA navigator, libby Greenhalgh, took her courage in her hands early on, calling a split with the rest of the fleet whilst approaching the Straits of Gibraltar – and it briefly left the women of Team SCA in a good lead as they entered the Atlantic and set a course south for Cape Town. Shortly after, Dongfeng Race Team leapfrogged into the lead, but a collision with an unidentified object forced them to slow their boat to replace a broken rudder. Dongfeng’s on board reporter Yann Riou said: “We had two options, installing the emergency rudder or removing what was left of the old rudder and putting the new

one in place. Thomas (Rouxel) put the diving suit on. He jumped into the water… removed what was left from the old rudder (not much) and we put the new one in place.” They were soon back sailing at 20 knots, although the problem had enabled Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing to take the lead. Passing through the Doldrums, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing together with Team Brunel emerged as the clear winners from the great lottery to take what looked like a firm grip on leg 1. The rest of the fleet were left some 90 miles plus in their wake, searching for the gusts which would propel them back into contention, skippers Ian Walker (GBR-Abu Dhabi) and Bouwe Bekking (NED-Team Brunel) were powering ahead. As All at Sea went to print, the front runners still had just over half the 6,487nm to complete the opening leg between Alicante and Cape Town but the experienced pair already looked to have made this a twoboat sprint to the finish come the first week of November. Follow the race online at www.volvooceanrace.com

SIR Dave Brailsford and 80 of his Team Sky charges swapped two wheels for three sails to spend a day learning the ropes on a team building day with the British Sailing Team at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Tour de France winner Chris Froome and double Olympic gold medallist Geraint Thomas were amongst those put through their paces during a series of races on Sunsail’s Match First 40s. They were ably assisted by some of Britain’s best Olympic and Paralympic classes talents including double Olympic medallist Nick Dempsey, Paralympic gold medallist Helena lucas, and Olympic silver medallist luke Patience. Team Principal Brailsford commented: “I’ve always known how successful [the British sailing] team have been – but it’s not until you actually get on a boat and you try and have a go yourself that you realise just how difficult it is!”

All good things... At this time of year, with the nights closing in, you might think things were winding down in the boating world. But it rather seems the opposite is true! Firstly, there has been lots of Royal involvement across the board this month. What an honour for our sport! From powerboating in Portsmouth with Geoff Holt, to celebrating our heroes and encouraging youth schemes - take a closer look at our news section. then there is the racing. From the debut flight of Ben Ainslie Racing’s new foiling AC45 on the Solent to the action-packed Atlantic battle for first leg victory in the Volvo Ocean Race, there is plenty going on in the racing world. And that is just for starters, as the Caribbean season is about to commence, and winter series on home waters are already well underway. All at Sea has been out and about trying our hand at some cruising this month. A full report is on page 22. Whether you are planning to indulge in a little late season pottering of your own and looking for inspiration, or you are reading this already tucked up by the fireside, make sure you take up Paul Antrobus’ recommendations for a cruising tipple! And if you have not yet put the boat to bed – we really hope you haven’t! - don’t miss our expert tips on pages 24-25 for both power and sail boats. Winterisation may seem like a formidable task, but there is plenty of help at hand, and it’s well worth the

effort in the long term. All-in-all, we have packed a lot into this issue – which happens sadly to be my last as Editor, as I move on to take up new challenges elsewhere. Over the past three years, it has been an extremely rewarding task to edit All at Sea. Looking back, my first reports profiled the athletes in training for the London 2012 Olympics. My last, this month, is on yacht cruising. In between, I have written on everything from white water rafting to powerboat championships and from bath tub racing (yes, really!) to luxury motor yachts. It’s thanks to the sheer diversity of stories from the boating world that we report on in every issue of All at Sea covering every possible aspect of life on and near the water and touching on every level of experience – that this has been such an exciting and insightful journey, not to mention unforgettable! I am pleased to be handing over the helm next month to Jane Hyde. Her past experience as editor of Boat Mart for many years stands her in good stead to steer All at Sea forwards. I know Jane will be keen for readers to get in touch, so please drop your thoughts, suggestions and letters to editor@allatsea.co.uk Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to say a very big thank you to All at Sea’s tens of thousands of readers and supporters over the last three years. Wishing fair winds and happy boating to you all!

Royal backing for youth initiative SIR Keith Mills and four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie have launched the 1851 trust, with the Duchess of Cambridge as Royal Patron. the new charity aims to inspire and engage a new generation through sailing and the marine industry, providing young people with the education, skills and training to become innovators of the future and stewards of the marine environment. Her Royal Highness said: “I am delighted to be Royal Patron of the 1851 trust. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed sailing from a young age and I know it is a great way of providing young people with the opportunity to develop skills and

46 years later, as I prepare to compete in the classic Route du Rhum race, I am very happy that our relationship continues. the 2014 race is open to mono and multihull boats across four classes with almost 80 entrants. One of the most highly contested classes will be the IMOC Open 60, in which several champions of the Vendée Globe will feature. they will face a crop of established IMOCA Open 60 skippers as well as newcomers to the class. Among the top contenders will be Francois Gabart, the youngest ever winner of the Vendée Globe who triumphed at his first attempt. Past Vendée Globe winner Vincent Riou on PRB and past transat Jacques Vabre winner Jérémie Beyou on Maitre Coq, will also be vying for the podium.

those opportunities up to as many people as possible – the more talent you have working on a problem, the better the solutions will be.” the trustees joined Sir Ben to visit an art project at the construction site of Ben Ainslie Racing’s new headquarters. 72 young people from six local schools were invited to complete a mural begun by local street artists. the Mary Rose, flying boats, hovercraft and previous America’s Cup contenders all feature, alongside Ben Ainslie Racing’s new boat. the charity is named for the year in which the race that was to become the America’s Cup was first sailed.

Solo ocean challenge underway SIR Robin Knox-Johnston, 75, is returning to his solo ocean racing roots by taking part in French single-handed classic, the Route de Rhum on his Open 60 entry, Grey Power. the British founder of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and first ever man to sail solo, non-stop around the world in 1968/69, will compete in the tenth anniversary edition of the 3,500 mile transatlantic race from St Malo, France to Guadeloupe, which starts on 2 November. Knox-Johnston last did this race in 1982 in his 70-foot catamaran Olympus, better known as Sea Falcon. He is the oldest participant entered at the age of 75, and once again has the backing of Henri Lloyd. “Henri Lloyd has supported me since my solo circumnavigation back in 1968, and

confidence. “It is a hugely exciting time for sailing as the British Challenger bids to bring the America’s Cup back to Britain. I am looking forward to being part of this journey and I hope that through the 1851 trust we can engage and inspire a new generation into sailing along the way.” the trust will be supported by Ben Ainslie Racing, and the team will host a Visitor Centre for the trust at the team’s Portsmouth headquarters, opening in June 2015. It will be an interactive showcase for the sport, sustainability and innovation. Sir Ben will also be a Patron of the 1851 trust. He said: “Young people are the key, there are great opportunities in the marine industry, and we want to open

Biggest team event

tHE biggest team racing event in the world was hosted by Oxford Sailing Club, Farmoor Reservoir, with 23 Junior (under 16) teams and 27 Youth (under 19) teams competing for championships honours at the 2014 RYA Eric twiname Youth and Junior team Racing Championships. Winning glory went to ‘Gingernut and Assorted Biscuits’ and ‘team 420’ as they were crowned champions in their respective events. Following a full day’s racing on Saturday with 10 rounds completed on both the Youth course with Fireflies and the Junior RS Feva course, standings started phenomenally close on the Sunday. the Youth fleet saw 11 of the 27 teams fighting for seven places that make up the Gold A Fleet, while there were three teams in the Junior fleet who had all lost only one race each.

However, with Sunday bringing gusts of up to 42 knots, racing soon came to a close at lunchtime after only one more round of stage one was possible, resulting in the event winners being decided from the final standings in the round robin stages. John Burgoigne, Event Director, commented: “What an action-packed weekend! With over 300 young sailors taking part, the enthusiasm for the RYA Eric twiname Youth and Junior team Racing Championships was once again in abundant evidence this year. “the quality of sailing was impressive and the conditions challenging. “With the continued support of the Eric twiname trust, we look forward to seeing so many passionate young sailors again next year.”

The changing face of the Hamble THE first pile has been driven in the Royal Southern’s Yacht Club’s most ambitious construction scheme to date, the creation of the Prince Philip Yacht Haven. The Royal Southern Yacht Club and its close neighbour, the RAF Yacht Club, have worked together for several years to reach this milestone. The need for this major construction project arose as a direct result of the deteriorating condition of the Royal Southern’s sea wall but, looking to the future, the club decided to make a virtue of necessity and improve its berthing facilities. The result is a crucial construction scheme that will stabilise the waterfront land and provide flood protection. State of the art facilities will be installed, along with 70 walk-ashore berths, available at all states of tide, and a dinghy slipway. Incorporated into the design are facilities to enable sailors with severe physical disabilities, including those who are restricted to wheelchairs,

to have direct access to boats afloat. AAS columnist, Geoff Holt MBE, an Honorary Member of the Club and inaugural Chairman of RYA Sailability, plans to establish a Wetwheels Hamble at the Royal Southern Yacht Club. This project will also provide improved facilities for the RAF Yacht Club which will now have direct access to its pontoons and rationalisation of land holdings. The scheme will change the face of the Hamble waterfront with the construction of a large quarterdeck over the water in front of the club, linking it with a replacement pier and providing facilities that will also benefit the local community. A number of environmental features are an integral part of the scheme such as a living wall for invertebrates. Work will be completed in three phases with completion planned for next April/May. www.royal-southern.co.uk/PPYH/PPYH-Blog

Over 200 apprentices, shipwrights and students, together with their employers, lecturers and guests attended the fourth Annual Shipwrights lectures in Southampton. Inspirational speakers from within the marine sector presented to the eager young audience.

RouND-the-world yachtsman Conrad humphreys has revealed plans to create an academy for a new generation of young sailors capable of competing against the best in the world’s biggest ocean races, including the Vendée Globe. The Plymouth-based sailor, 41, has established a new sailing base at the former Royal Marines Commando base at Turnchapel in Plymouth. The site, formerly RM Turnchapel, complete

with old naval buildings and paraphernalia, was bought by Yacht haven Ventures earlier this year after the MoD moved 539 Assault Squadron to a brand new amphibious warfare centre at Devonport. Conrad recently announced his return to solo ocean racing with a three-year sponsorship with Bullitt Group, the global licensee and manufacturer for rugged Cat Phones and accessories. his first race will be the gruelling transatlantic

race, the Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe, which starts on 2 November. his Class 40 yacht, Cat Phones, will be based at Turnchapel Wharf. under Conrad’s ambitious plans, he wants to develop a world class training centre to nurture young talent and increase British sailors’ chances of success in races like La Solitaire du Figaro and the Vendée Globe. After decades of being a ‘restricted’ area, the wharf has now been opened up to

the public. Building 1 has undergone a transformation and is now fully operational. “Turnchapel is absolutely perfect,” said Conrad. “The vision is for this area to be a leading marine hub, so to have a professional sailing team at its core is a fantastic opportunity. “The facilities rival anywhere in europe and I hope we can encourage other teams to use our facility.” www.conradhumphreys.com

HERITAGE FUNDING SECURES RN SHIPS The heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £1.75 million to the National Museum of the Royal Navy to restore and open to visitors for the first time in its history, hMS M.33. Launched in May 1915, she is the sole remaining British veteran of that year’s Gallipoli Campaign and the only British warship from the First World War that will be open to the public during the Gallipoli Centenary next year. NMRN and hampshire County Council have worked as partners to develop the £2.4million ‘Commemorating Gallipoli – the hMS M.33 Project’ in order to conserve, restore and interpret hMS M.33. The ship sits in No.1 Dock alongside hMS Victory in Portsmouth historic Dockyard. When open, visitors will start their journey through hMS M.33 with a 6 metre descent into the bottom of the dock before stepping aboard. New interpretation, including a stunning immersive battle experience, will bring to life hMS M.33’s history, the stories of the men who served on board, and the history of the Gallipoli Campaign. The Gallipoli Campaign, fought between April 1915 and January 2016 in what is now modern day Turkey, claimed over 100,000 lives of personnel from all round the world. hMS M.33 is a ‘Monitor’ of 568 tons. With her shallow draft she was able to get close-in to shore and

fire at targets on land. She carried two powerful and oversize 6” guns but was a basic metal box lacking in comforts. The 72 officers and men who sailed for the Gallipoli Campaign were crammed inside and away from home for over three years. The heritage Lottery Fund has also confirmed a seperate award of £11.5 million to the National Museum of the Royal Navy to conserve, interpret and display hMS Caroline, the lone survivor of the 1916 Battle of Jutland. The grant means plans to transform the historic ship, whose home has been Belfast harbour for 90 years, into a world class heritage visitor attraction in time for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 2016 can now go ahead. www.nmrn.org.uk

Alien invasion

Advice from The Green Blue, following the discovery of the invasive Quagga Mussel in the Wraysbury River and Reservoir, has been issued to ensure boat users ‘check clean, dry’ their boats and equipment before changing locations. Jane Swan, The Green Blue Project Manager, says: “The Quagga Mussel is a highly invasive non-native species. it can affect whole ecosystems by filtering out large quantities of nutrients. it also presents a serious biofouling risk by blocking pipes, smothering boat hulls and other structures. “eradication of most invasive species once established outside their usual range is very difficult so the best approach to deal with arrival of new species is to focus on better biosecurity, especially the check, clean, dry routine for both inland and coastal boating activities.” When leaving an anchorage, boaters are advised to wash both the anchor and chain before stowing. Avoid sailing or motoring through water plants and

weed if possible. On land, the advice is to check equipment and clothing for live organisms. Soaking equipment and clothing in hot water on site or when you return home, will improve the chances of killing larvae and adults. clean all parts of the boat, trailer and equipment that come into contact with the water before leaving. When recovering a trailer, dinghy, PWc or RiB, drain water from every part of the boat and all equipment that can hold water. Quagga mussels are quite similar to zebra mussels, another invasive species that is already widespread in england and Wales. They are small with a dark brown and light brown stripy shell. They are more rounded than a zebra mussel so when placed on its front it will roll to one side. Quagga mussels also have an undulating (as opposed to a straighter, horizontal) seam between the shells. Anyone who may have found a Quagga Mussel, is urged to send an email with a photograph and location details to alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk

Cross-Channel ClassiC The sixth biennial Classic Channel Regatta will take place from 11 to 18 July 2015, with the first weekend at Dartmouth incorporating Dartmouth Classics Weekend. The regatta brings together an international fleet of classic yachts and their crews for a week of friendly competition and informal social events, and has an established reputation for classic sailing at its very best. Over 50 yachts have already pre-registered for 2015 and the organisers are expecting a record entry, which may well reach their maximum of 100 yachts. This includes yachts from the UK, France, Belgium, holland and Germany, and even one S&S yawl coming up from Italy. After the first two days of racing at Dartmouth, the Classic Channel Race from Dartmouth to Paimpol in Brittany will follow. After a rest day in Paimpol there will be the Round Brehat Race, then a passage race to St

Peter Port in Guernsey with the regatta finishing with the Round Sark Race. Racing will be to the JCh Classic handicap, which is free and available online, and race officers of both nationalities will be involved. The regatta has its own distinct West Country and Breton atmosphere, which attracts many crews to return for each regatta. Arrival in Paimpol is to coincide with Bastille Day celebrations. The framed original of the painting commissioned from Paimpolaise marine artist Guy L’hostis for the 2015 regatta (pictured) will be presented at the end of the regatta as the ‘Spirit of the Regatta Trophy’ to the yacht which most successfully embraces the unique ethos and Corinthian spirit of this very friendly regatta, described by a previous winner of the trophy as ‘the world’s most enjoyable classic regatta’. www.classic-channel-regatta.eu

The RORC Rating Office, the technical and administrative hub for all things Spinlock IRC rating-related in the UK, is re-badging its Limited Validity TCC as the Single event Rating with immediate effect. The LV TCC scheme was an initiative launched two years ago as a means of introducing new owners to the benefits of racing under IRC without having to apply for a full certificate. If owners only wanted to race in one or two events in the year they could apply for an LV TCC, with an upgrade to a full IRC certificate offered at a reduced rate. The change of name is primarily being introduced to provide a more understandable and user-friendly path to build on the success of the past two years. 2014 saw 81 events accepting LV TCCs with 117 certificates being

New look RYA wAles RYA Cymru-Wales is the new name for the Welsh Yachting Association, the body that has been the Royal Yachting Association’s Council for Wales, recognised by the Welsh Government and Sport Wales, for more than half a century. RYA Cymru-Wales will continue to play the central role in developing and growing boating for all ages in Wales, as well as developing talented young sailors as they continue to represent Great Britain in major regattas around the world including the Olympics. “This is an exciting time for us, I think the new name will help make our role clearer to many clubs and individuals involved in the different disciplines that make up the sport in Wales,” explained Steven Morgan, Chief executive of RYA Cymru Wales. “We have been considering our branding for some time to make clear the strategic link with the RYA brand across the UK, which is why member clubs have voted to make the change now. “There are a variety of good reasons for changing the name after more than 50 years of successful development. It allows more commercial opportunities, including sponsorship and grant giving bodies, through the closer association with such a credible national governing body. “We will continue to manage our own affairs and staff; we will develop our own programmes and activities alongside the established RYA programmes. “Last year we launched our vision that Wales will become one of the best places in the world to be a sailor, this will only help us achieve the challenging targets we have set ourselves.” www.ryacymruwales.org.uk

issued, compared with 54 events and 124 LV TCCs being issued in 2013. The newly branded SeR is being rolled out to regatta and race organisers across the UK, with encouragement to include it in communications with their members and potential race and regatta entrants. In spite of the LV TCC option already being widely available at club events and having been taken up by most major events over the past two years, the vast majority of interest has been from those run in the Solent region. The LV TCC has given owners the opportunity for a memorable day or week of IRC racing at minimal cost. however, it is positive to note that a small number of boats that held LV TCCs in 2013 have upgraded to full IRC certificates in 2014 and as the Rating Office Technical

Director, Mike Urwin, comments, “We may not yet be seeing vast numbers but it is satisfying to have made some converts. “Noting the apparent strong Solent/major event bias, while the significant increase this year in the number of events accepting LV TCCs confirms that clubs around the UK are keen to get more people racing, we recognise that many potential racing owners are not aware of the SeR option, or the help and advice they can get from their local IRC Advocates or the Rating Office. “We hope that the change of name will make SeR more accessible and widely recognised, and we will also be talking further to club officials and members at the regional level including seminars to be jointly held with the RYA this winter.” www.rorcrating.com/ser

Scott scoops Athlete of the Year Giles Scott receiving his award from Gail Cook of Garmin, credit British Sailing Team.

GILeS Scott claimed top honours at the British Sailing Team’s annual awards, winning the Athlete of the Year prize after his unbeaten run in the Finn class this season. The 27-year-old paid tribute to his coach Matt howard, his Finn class training partners and the team’s support staff as he collected the award following his dominance since returning to the heavyweight dinghy just over a year ago after an America’s Cup sabbatical. During an entirely golden season, Scott claimed his second World Championship title at the ISAF Worlds last month in Santander, and hit winning ways on the 2016 Olympic waters in Rio and at the european Championships in La Rochelle – amassing enough of a lead to win the latter two events a day early. Scott has also earned a spot on the shortlist for next month’s ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. Megan Pascoe was named the Paralympic Classes Athlete of the Year after a consistent season in

the 2.4mR class, which saw her win the european Championships and claim podium finishes in all five of the World Cup and eUROSAF events she contested. Scott’s coach Matt howard picked up the British Sailing Team’s ‘Golden Funnel’ award for coaching excellence, with his name now appearing on the trophy for a third time in the nine year history of the prize, while Lorenzo Chiavarini was the runaway winner of the Podium Potential Sailor of the Year Award following his victories at the Laser u21 World and european Championships, and his 11th place at the senior World Championships in Santander. British Sailing Team members were also invited to vote for the colleagues they felt best displayed some of the team’s core values of ‘Collaboration’, ‘Passion’, ‘Committed to excellence’ and ‘Gold Driven’, with head of Sports Science and Medicine Paul Mullan and Finn sailor Ben Cornish both emerging as double award winners.

Oil spill test for Poole

BOAT BUILDER JOBS AT RISK

NEWS IN BRIEF PUPPY LOVE STARS

Members from West Kirby Sailing Club are due to star in a BBC4 comedy, Puppy Love, which airs in November. The series includes several scenes set in the clubhouse and on West Kirby’s Marine Lake, with WKSC members re-enacting a team racing championship and prizegiving. West Kirby RNLI was also involved.

RESCUE ON THE ROCKS

AS part of its on-going commitment to manage incidents in the harbour, Poole Harbour Commissioners simulated a major oil spill to test the current capability and processes for response to a tier two hydrocarbon spill. The major emergency exercise, which PHC carries out every three years, staged a scenario whereby a ferry and a cargo vessel collided, causing fuel to spill from the tank of the cargo vessel. PHC worked in collaboration with more than 15 organisations, including the MCA, Environment Agency and local authorities to carry out the exercise. As part of PHC’s response, a number of booms were deployed in the Little and Backwater channels. In a real oil spill situation, the boom would stop any oil flowing into sensitive and environmental areas of the Harbour. A skimmer was also deployed to show how the oil would be captured.

Although a major oil spill in Poole Harbour is very unlikely, it is important that such risk is assessed with a plan in place to respond to such an incident, especially in an environmentally sensitive area as Poole Harbour. The plan is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Harbour Master, Captain Brian Murphy said: “These exercises are vitally important to ensure that Poole Harbour Commissioners’ highly trained personnel are prepared to deal with such an unfortunate event professionally and swiftly, plus minimise any health risk, damage to the environment and to ensure business continuity. They allow us to test our plan against various scenarios with the aim of gaining experience and improving preparedness and improving the plan itself. These exercises will provide the harbour community with confidence in the knowledge that Poole Harbour Commissioners and other organisations will be prepared in the event of a major oil spill in Poole Harbour.”

Chris Rigby, South Pembrokeshire RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor was surfing off Broad Haven beach when he spotted a teenage boy clinging to the rocks and shouting for help. Chris pushed the surfer - clinging to his board - through large swells to safety. Conditions were extremely rough; the RNLI urges all beginners to avoid storm swells.

POOLE-based luxury motor yacht builder, Sunseeker International, has announced a strategic review of its manufacturing operations, which could put around 300 jobs at risk. ‘Non-core’ activities such as administrative and managerial positions would be most at risk, with minimal impact will be made on skilled craftsman roles. The firm is keen to stress its intention to maintain its manufacturing base in the UK, and to continue

introducing new models to the market. Sunseeker cites pressures from increasing competition and changes in competitor demands as the reasons behind the decision to streamline its production. The company currently employs more than 2000 people. In 2013, Chinese firm, Dalian Wanda Group, reportedly paid £320m for 92 per cent of the business. Earlier this summer, MD Stewart McIntyre left the business.

Team SCA, the first all-women Volvo Ocean Race crew in more than 10 years, is depending on Helly Hansen to stay warm, dry and protected at sea for the next nine months, as they take part in one of the world’s toughest races.

the centenary of one of the most dramatic sea rescues off the Yorkshire coast has been commemorated in Whitby, with a series of events and tributes. the Rohilla, a WWI hospital ship heading to Dunkirk, ran aground on 30 October 1914 in horrific conditions. Of the 229 people on board, 85 lost their lives. Remarkably, RNlI volunteers helped save 144 lives.

Looking forward to rum regatta The Mount Gay Round Barbados Race Series 2015 will run from 16-24 January. This event, which kick starts the Caribbean race season, was re-launched in 2014 with a new race format and plenty of record-breaking opportunities. It proved such a success that an even bigger entry is expected in 2015. Organised by the Barbados Cruising Club in association with the Barbados Tourism Authority and Mount Gay, the Mount Gay Round Barbados Race Series encompasses the already established Mount Gay Round Barbados Race plus a series of coastal races, and a final 300-mile sprint to Antigua to tie up with the Superyacht Challenge. The Mount Gay Round Barbados Race Series is one of the most appealing events on the circuit,

attracting race teams keen to use the event as a warm up for the Caribbean season. One of the biggest draws, other than the warm Caribbean waters, miles of gold sandy beaches, and constant 12-18 knot east to east-north-east trade winds, is the opportunity to break records. The headline event is the 60-nautical mile Mount Gay Round Barbados Race on 21 January in which teams race to break and set Round Barbados Records. There are currently 14 established records, all of which offer the skipper’s weight in Mount Gay extra Old Rum if broken! Raphaël Grisoni and his Mount Gay team aboard the British VO70, Monster Project are the current outright monohull round Barbados record holders with a time of 4 hours 42 minutes 28 seconds. Andy Budgen, owner of

the charter yacht Monster Project will be back in 2015 to compete in the 89th edition of the race and to defend the title. For teams looking for competitive one-design racing the Mount Gay Round Barbados Race Series has plenty to offer with a chance to race among the super competitive local J/24 fleet. Although there are several local boats available for charter, the organisers are keen to enhance the number of entries by offering a special shipping package deal for teams from the UK. As expected at the home of Mount Gay Rum, fine Caribbean hospitality will be in full flow throughout the week with a party every night including the legendary Mount Gay Red Cap party.

AT the 13th International Sailing Summit, taking place 17 November, a trio of key speakers will address a global audience to demonstrate how inspiration and innovation can increase participation and generate business success. Olympic Gold Medallist Iain Percy OBe will welcome delegates from around the world and record-breaking quadriplegic sailor hilary Lister and Rod Carr, Chairman of UK Sport will headline the Gala Dinner. A exciting line up of international speakers will front a programme centred on the theme ‘waking up the sailing industry – how sailing needs to modernise, diversify and develop to attract and retain participants’. Organised by British Sailing, a group association of the British Marine Federation, the event is expected to attract some 150 delegates representing all aspects of their sailing sector from every corner of the globe. It is the perfect event for companies who share the ultimate goal of increasing participation and bringing more business in the future. The summit takes place in Amsterdam the day before the world-renowned Marine equipment Trade Show. Iain Percy OBe, Olympic madallist and Team Manager for Artemis Racing, said: “The recent America’s Cup was a real breakthrough in making sailing mainstream; it was the first time I’d heard lots of my non-sailing friends saying they were staying up to watch the racing and that sentiment was echoed around the world. The sport was shown in such a great light. As an industry we now have to build on that excitement to continue to attract newcomers and grow the sport. Getting more people enjoying time on the water ensures the whole sector benefits.”

The hISC Get Racing Club, launched in April 2014, has, over the course of this year enabled 200 sailors to get on the water to learn key racing techniques, improve their confidence and gain valuable racing skills and experience. The initiative has been hailed a resounding success and has provided adult members at the club with a unique opportunity to learn from highly experienced volunteer ‘racing mentors’ in a fun and learning environment and all for no cost. An average of 20 sailors have attended each of the 10 events with around 10-12 boats taking part in each session. The boats have been a mixture of hISC owned RS Ventures (which have been made available for use free of charge) and member owned boats including Wayfarers, RS200s, RS Q’bas, Lasers and Solos. The events have been fantastically supported by a dedicated group of nearly 30 volunteer hISC racing mentors, including Olympic medallists, who have given up their time and experience to coach participants both on and off the water on selected Saturdays throughout

the season. From the very first event, which took place under inauspicious conditions in April 2014 (storm clouds and a huge force seven squall) to the final event which took place in October, again with an un-inviting forecast, the initiative has grown from strength to strength and successfully bridged the gap between getting less experienced members on the water and learning to race in a fun and informal format. hISC club member and sailing coach, Melvyn Cooper has been the inspiration and founder of the highly successful initiative and has been a constant driving force. he said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many people getting involved with this initiative over the season; sailors taking part in GRC events have met other members for the first time and sailed together in the club RS Ventures; it’s become a very sociable event! We look forward to developing the initiative further and getting more participants involved next season.” Winter shore-based social/workshops and an end of season party are now being planned.

Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

e iew hv te

We visited during the annual Oyster Fest, which opens the season in October, and draws a wide crowd to enjoy the food and music. 2015’s event takes place 15-18 October – book your berth early! In Falmouth itself there is a huge choice of places to eat, with fun cafés competing with more serious restaurants - most enjoying glorious views over the Fal Estuary or out to sea. Quality is high and local produce well respected.

Fantastic for fish

r

rtehveiew

Rick Stein’s Fish offers some great light bites, ideal if you like to try lots of different flavours and get bored with raw oysters. The other advantage of this place is that you can usually get in - they don’t take reservations - and I haven’t been turned away, whereas I will have to wait to try The Wheelhouse, which was highly recommended, so try it if you can.

Pick of Falmouth’s finest Top for seafood and crab - The Wheelhouse - Need to book, they run two sittings. Situated down Upton Slip, these guys are so busy they don’t even have a sign! (01326 318050)

The most popular plate is definitely the fish and chips but during the Oyster Fest they add some groovy ‘specials’ to the menu and I had to try them.

Beyond Falmouth

Top pub, Pandora Inn, boasts a wonderful setting and really good daily specials. Ruby-red aged beef from the Lizard caught my eye as I was all fished out, but my neighbours always come for the mussels as they say the cream and butter sauce is first class. Their most popular plate is the local catch of the day Fish and Ships or the Pandora Fish Pie. I like their ‘wine of the month’ option too. (01326 372678)

First off - tempura oysters with sesame seeds and lime, light as a puff of air with a crisp soft chew. Still had room, so next I tried the trio of Parmesan cream oysters, interesting, but not as good as the tempura. Washed down with good house Muscadet. All the starters I would highly recommend, as well as the salt ‘n’ pepper prawns and chilli squid. (01841 532700)

Hottest coffee – Espressini - There’s a new tiny branch opposite the Stable but the main hub is on central Killigrew Street. Serious about coffee choice and a great little menu. (01326 311633).

Maybe coming by boat would be safer then those narrow roads - or boat to Mylor Bridge and then walk. Parking is tight on sunny days and weekends.

Garden party

rth eveiew

Also beyond Falmouth, Potager Glass House is well worth a visit - a dream of a working garden rediscovered, that has recently opened up its handbuilt (by Mark, local boat builder) greenhouse on Fridays and weekends. Wonderful atmosphere. Very happy families either playing ping pong in another glasshouse or eating cakes and drinking tea, or resting after a session in the garden – Friday helpers get rewarded with a cream tea! Breton baker Awen makes all the breads from sour dough base, with a very interesting long stir and overnight prove method. Well worth spending some time here; opens from breakfast till tea-time. (01326 341258)

Best bread - Baker Tom - This artisan baker has four bases now, and you could do worse than coming into town from the boat and loading up with fresh breads, a few saffron buns, some Cornish cream and cheese from the deli and heading off for a picnic. (01326 318221) Fastest fish and chips - Harbour Lights – On the quay near the Stable; eat in or take out. (01326 316934). Top veggie choice - The Wildebeest - On Arwenack Street. (01326 210602)

Flushing to Mylor Bridge 5 miles there and back This is a beautiful walk following the coastal path from Flushing (see link right to start from Falmouth) to Mylor Bridge with a welcome café Castaways at the end. (01326 377710)

GEOFF HOLT

YJA YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2010

BY ROYAL WETWHEELS APPOINTMENT

THE Wetwheels charity ended its boating season for 2014 in a right royal style, when, at his personal request, The Earl of Wessex visited our Portsmouth-based boat to see for himself the work we have been doing over the past two years. The occasion of his visit was used to make two significant announcements for the charity, which firstly included a 37 percent increase in participation figures over 2013 (to a total of 1224 people). Secondly, we were delighted to announce the launch of the Wetwheels

Hamble Appeal, which will see a Wetwheels vessel based at the new Prince Philip Yacht Haven on the Hamble for the benefit of local disabled and disadvantaged communities.

WINNING FORMULA

Since setting up the charity a couple of years ago, it was clear we had hit upon a winning formula. There are, I believe, several reasons for that success. Firstly, we are the only powerboating charity in the UK compared to more

than 200 sailing charities. Sailing is not 200 times more popular than powerboating, of course not! But by diverting the majority of charity funding and resources to sailing, it excludes many thousands of disabled people who cannot actually sail for some reason – these people are being denied access to the water. Wetwheels is not a trip boat, on the contrary. Everyone, regardless of age or disability can not only access the water on Wetwheels, but they can drive the boat too. The boat can go at speeds of up to 40 knots but speed is not the main factor and, as I explained to HRH Prince Edward, it is being on the water where the magic happens and it does not matter if that is sailing or motoring – with Wetwheels we have removed the final barrier for those for whom sailing is not an option.

‘I explained to HRH Prince Edward, it is being on the water where the magic happens and it does not matter if that is sailing or motoring…’

A ROYAL THUMBS UP

The Prince was keen to hear that we already have a sister ship operating in Jersey and we have plans to locate a further five vessels around the UK over the next five years. During his visit, His Royal Highness also met Dan Giddings, a 17-year old student with cerebral palsy from the Treloar’s College in Alton, and Anne Savage, a local resident from Portsmouth. Both are wheelchair users who have enjoyed trips out on Wetwheels in the Solent.

Speaking after the visit Anne Savage, who has chronic arthritis, said: “I feel honoured to be part of this occasion. It’s wonderful being on Wetwheels. You have the freedom of the seas and are away from the usual drag of life.” Teenager Dan said he didn’t know what to expect from the visit but was very excited. After meeting the Prince he declared him to be “someone who knew what he was talking about…” We have had many highlights this year, not least the privilege of taking out a hundred or so older folks with dementia; for them, their families and their care providers, it is clear we have tapped into a rich vein of amazing opportunities with profound outcomes for all involved – every trip providing incredible and memorable stories. It was a great honour to have the Earl of Wessex give us recognition for all of our hard work this year. www.wetwheels.co.uk

Solent based dinghy sailor david henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating.

Sailing then and now

David Thomas designs are a mainstay of the Round the Island Race (indeed, David was a past winner of the Gold Roman Bowl). Here, the Sigma 38 Yoda competes. Image:Courtesy Banks Sails.

The Wizard of Warsash A look at the life and legacy of legendary yacht designer, david thomas

In the years immediately following the end of WWII, something of an explosion happened in the world of dinghy sailing. Easy to build, own and sail dinghies would bring leisure boating to a far wider population, thanks to Jack Holt (1912 – 1995), the ‘Wizard of Putney’, whose designs were at the heart of the dinghy sailing revolution. Fast forward 30 years and the ‘baby boomer generation’ found themselves growing out of the Enterprise, GP14 and Solo and needing something bigger. David Thomas would be the man with the insight to design a whole range of small keelboats destined to provide an important stepping stone into the world of cruisers and cruiser racing. Little wonder then that David, who sadly passed away recently, could well be described as the ‘Wizard of Warsash’, for in so many ways his boats can be seen as in the same light as those of Holt. In the boom era for small cruisers, David Thomas designs quickly got the reputation for being affordable, accessible, hassle-free and offering the all-important ‘value for money’. Again, much like Holt’s, David Thomas’s designs seem able to stand the test of time, for the simple reason that they are all ‘damn good boats’. More importantly, the news of David’s death, at the age of 82, means that one of the last remaining links to a

generation of inspirational thinkers and builders has been broken. MAn of MAny tAlents When David was born in Southampton in 1932, the sport of leisure sailing was still in its infancy and what development there was would soon be curtailed by the war years. With the Southampton Docks being constantly bombed, the Thomas family moved out to Eling, nestled above the massive container port that is today such a visible feature of the west side of Southampton. It was here that David started spending more and more time on the water. Already the signs were there that he had an eye for not only innovation but an easy writing style when describing his exploits. As he grew towards the point at which a formal career beckoned, David was faced with a number of choices. But, like so many young men, the lure of seeing the world now that it was at peace proved a strong draw and would eventually lure him off to sea. Ten years of extensive travel saw David now holding a Master’s Ticket, but at the same time wanting to ‘drop anchor’ and return to a shore-based life. Thus it was that he set out on what would be the second phase of a multifaceted career, this time as a journalist and Editor at Yachting World. Home was

His many successful designs made David a true ‘wizard’ of the drawing board.

now the River Hamble, which at the time was in the process of becoming one of the hottest dinghy hubs in the whole of the UK. For recreation, David raced in the toughest fleet of all, the Merlin Rockets, but at the same time through his work with the magazine, he had become involved in the Trial Series for a boat to replace the Finn as the Olympic singlehander. Working closely with local boatbuilder Jack Chippendale (who would himself go on to stake his own place in history) David developed the Unit singlehanded dinghy, which came so close to success only to be overtaken at the final trials in Holland. Even so, David remained proud of his first real design, and later, with the hindsight of almost 50 years, accepted that he and Jack Chippendale could have done more. However, at the time, both builder and designer had already come to the conclusion that whatever happened in the trials, the winner would be the Contender, so the Unit project was gently laid to rest. David was able to console himself with some great results at the Merlin Rocket Championships, but by now Big brother to the Sonata, the Thomas-designed Impala offered the all round ability of a pleasantly equipped cruiser and a racer with winning credentials. his skills as a designer were starting to become recognised in the world of cruisers and offshore sailing. His rapidly developing skills as a helmsman would also bring him widespread acclaim, none more so than when he found his abilities being valued at the wheel of an America’s Cup 12 Metre. Bending the rules David continued designing and after the success of his Elizabethan 31, he next found that he was being drawn into the world of the International Offshore Rule (IOR). It would be in the IOR boats that the innovation of the designer would be tested to the limit, in order to best exploit the marked peculiarities of the Rule. David had already had enjoyed success at finding ways around a rulebook when he found a loophole that enabled him to design nitro, a radical Merlin Rocket. Whilst designing dinghies he is often overlooked as being one of the first exponents - if not the first - of what would become the spinnaker chute. With his design credentials established, David’s work would now expand across the whole range of yacht sizes, from round the world racers to a veritable

armada of small weekend yachts ideally suited to the Solent. Harking back to his time in dinghies, David was quick to recognise that owners of yachts no longer wanted to be taking speculative gambles on the design of their yacht, with the future clearly belonging to the one design boats. What followed was an amazing range of designs such as the Sonata. Impala and Sigma, which were all very much aimed at the casual, even ‘weekend’ sailor. These boats seemed to bring out the best of their helms and crews, regardless of how novice or experienced they may be. In more recent years, David was still drawing up lines for popular boats, with the Hunter range being an ever-present sight out on the water. He also returned one more time to the dinghy world, with his cheeky design for the Foxer, which with its brightly coloured sail is raced with some light hearted yet intense competition at venues such as the Hamble. Sadly David has now gone, but there is no doubt that he leaves the world of leisure boating and racing with an incredible legacy of wonderful boats that will bring pleasure to many for a long time to come.

Girl power

Teen transformed by once-in-a-lifetime opportunity “IF anyone asked me if they should get involved in ThunderCat racing, my answer would definitely be ‘yes’. After a season’s racing, my whole life is different; before I started racing I was shy and not very confident, I didn’t like doing anything out of character.” Zoe Smillie (18) won a competition in January to form the first all-female ThunderCat team, fully supported and trained by the Microlink company, ThunderCat Racing and new sponsor Kingfisher Fire and Security.

Ian Blacker, director of Kingfisher Fire and Security, is no stranger to powerboat racing having raced most of his life across the world and is currently racing alongside Class One in the newly formed V1 class. Thanks to Ian’s support and encouragement to get new blood into the sport, Zoe was paired up with an equally interesting competition winner – mother of two, nurse by day, new lady racer at the weekends, Demelza Johns.

ADRENALINE RUSH Reflecting on her first season as a powerboat racer, Zoe said: “I am not really sure why I thought ThunderCat racing would be a good idea, but after convincing my mum to let me try out for the new all-girls team that was being advertised, I fell in love with it. “I wouldn’t have even thought about racing if it wasn’t for the amazing

sponsorship deal on offer. Without Kingfisher Fire and Security supporting our racing I wouldn’t be able to do it; so I am so thankful to Ian Blacker for giving me this awesome opportunity to be able to take part in the ThunderCat Racing UK, the RYA National Championship series and then the UIM P750 European Championship, which was held on 1-5 October in Gibraltar, as part of the Great Britain team. “The reason racing is so much fun is because of the adrenalin you get when you’re on that start line waiting for the green flag to drop, and the silence on the beach; you look to your first mark and next thing you know you’re in the boat, racing alongside 12 other boats trying to be the first one there. “What makes racing even better is the community that comes along with it; these are some of the funniest, kindest, craziest people I have met in my whole life but they are what makes racing worth it. If ever I needed any help I wouldn’t hesitate to ask, as I know everyone tries their hardest to help as much as they can. “ThunderCat racing has definitely changed my life and if somebody told me a year ago I would be where I am today because of racing I wouldn’t believe them; racing has made me a better, more confident person and for that I am so grateful.” www.thundercatracing.com

seaward’s suCCess

SEAwARD Boats, builders of rugged all-weather nelson leisure and commercial boats, has reported a ten-fold increase in trials of its new Seaward 25 E 14 twin-screw motor cruiser since its launch at September’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. The Seaward yard currently has new versions of the Seaward 23, 29 and 35 in build, due to launch shortly. All three incorporate the new options and features pioneered in the 25 E 14, including the adjustable stand-up/ sit down steering position, improved interior, and more comfortable cockpit layout options.

ClassiC restored

A classic 1930s Gentleman’s Launch had been left derelict in a barn for over 35 years when a local businessman, from Poole, Dorset bought the 22ft British Power Boat Company runabout on eBay in October 2013. Boat builders, CServe, were appointed to carefully restore the boat for the owner - a local sailing and powerboat collector. Leading marine sound and exhaust specialists, Halyard, was then given the difficult brief of fitting the boat with modern sound and vibration reduction solutions. Chris Somner, owner of CServe Ltd, commented: “The client is delighted with the final result - a discreet, vibration free installation of a 180hp 1950s Chris-Craft 283 V8, from Halyard, into a beautiful piece of English marine history.” He added: “The boat will be put to good use by our client, who will be showing it at classic boat venues across Europe and will also use it for picnics on Poole Harbour.”

Solent adventureS

Cruising log SunSAil uK chArter - GeorGie corlett reportS

Gliding out of the lock from Sunsail’s uK charter base at Port Solent at 7am on an autumnal Friday morning, the world seemed still; yet the air was filled with potential for adventure. the narrowest of channels led from the lock and threaded its way off into the distance towards Portsmouth Harbour, its confines accentuated by the lowest of low tides.

A steaming round of coffee was brought on deck to ward off the early morning chill, as we left port Solent behind. An informative and professional handover had been made the day before by the Sunsail uK team, and the Beneteau Sunsail Match First 40 (one of Sunsail’s matched fleet of 30 boats) was our home for the next four days. We had been pleased to find the yacht and its equipment in excellent condition, there was even a welcome pack of basic necessities on board. the staff were happy to answer all of our questions, and we were assured that assistance would be provided via a 24/7 helpline number should we encounter any breakages or difficulties during our charter. then, after a quick provisioning trip to the nearby tesco, we kicked off our little break away with a relaxed meal at one of port Solent’s many restaurants, whilst finalising the plans for our voyage. With a varied forecast, we set several

contingencies in place.

Plan A – round the back

Although dramatic rumbles of thunder and lashings of rain had plagued our preparations the previous day, on the morning of our departure the sun was bursting through the clouds, and with a brisk breeze building from the south, we decided to stick with plan A, heading east out of the Solent.

We had our sights on poole, but, wanting an ambitious sail for our first day, set course for the back of the isle of Wight. reaching Bembridge, we had a taste of what was to come as the sea state livened and breeze stiffened. time to reef! Despite the reduced sail area, the F40 felt nicely balanced and handled well, as we tacked offshore to clear St catherine’s point, careful to coincide our passage with slack water. then, with the well-known lighthouse blinking us by from several miles inshore, we set course on a reach as the next leg came into view - the southern coastline of the island now showing us an impressive vista. With the sun out and barely another boat in sight, our passage was exhilarating yet controlled - coastal sailing at its best. the old harry rocks stood as sentries to calmer waters as poole harbour entrance came into view, whilst in the distance the needles and sweeping cliffs of Freshwater Bay were still visible. As we wended our way into poole harbour, admiring the picturesque shoreline, i was struck by the beauty of our surroundings. So often when out on the water, i find my attention so

wrapped up with sailing the boat that the stunning backdrop against which we undertake our sport becomes very much, well, simply, part of the scenery. Sunsail may well operate charters in some 30 countries worldwide, from the Med to the South pacific, but the opportunity to take time to explore the amazing sailing waters on our very own doorstep is certainly not to be under-estimated. that evening, we celebrated mastering 60 spectacular nautical miles of the British coastline with a

very British supper of pie and chips at The Stable. Fortunately, it was then an easy amble back to our berth at Poole Quay Boat Haven, for a wellearned early night. A more leisurely start the next day saw us motoring out of Poole Harbour, with a dramatic rainbow arcing over the shoreline behind us. Setting the autopilot, we ghosted along in the lightest of zephyrs under sunny skies, with mid-morning tea and cake to celebrate a birthday on board. Despite intentions of cruising further west, an adverse forecast for the following day dictated we curb our ambitions. Instead we sailed quite happily downwind under a now-lively westerly, heading back towards the Solent, maxing our boat speed out at an impressive 12 knots. Running up the south channel, we marvelled - between gybes - at the colossus of The Needles, before joining the gaggle of other boats racing the tide through the Hurst Narrows, now seemingly in slow motion. This being a sunny Saturday afternoon, the Solent was filled with a stream of sails of all shapes and sizes. No wonder then that the small marina at Yarmouth was filling up fast, as we pulled into the pretty little harbour and rafted up for the evening.

arrive at Alum Bay well in time for lunch – eaten under the many hued cliffs with the dinghies hauled up on the beach. There’s time to explore this rarely visited corner of the Isle of Wight, after which the dinghies continue on to The Needles and its lighthouse, before turning back for Lymington. The fleet arrive back at Lymington in time to visit a local hostelry before the journey home.

Planning a dinghy cruise

Dinghy cruising is much more accessible than you may think, albeit with some careful planning needed. Day sailing with a group of experienced day sailors is an ideal stepping stone between safety-boat monitored club sailing and day sailing on your own. The Cody Club’s cruises are always planned with regard to the tidal streams – which can easily be faster than a dinghy in very light winds.

Blessed for the third day in a row with fair winds, we headed out of Yarmouth and hoisted the main, unfurling the headsail and setting course towards Cowes. With a favourable tide, we were soon whisked along the Solent, dodging the Sunday morning race series as we went. As we entered the eastern Solent, a fleet of Sunsail F40s gathering for a start caught our attention - feet racing being one of the main activities organised throughout the year by the Sunsail Events team at Port Solent, alongside hospitality days. This was round seven of the Sunsail Racing Series, and the last before the grand final. Bets were quickly placed as we watched the closely-matched fleet march off towards their first mark in the distance. After a leisurely sail onwards to the Forts and back, it was time to drop the anchor in the relative shelter of Osbourne Bay. Bimini up, tunes on, and a delightful luncheon of sandwiches, cuppa soup and cake was served on deck. Then, with the first tell tale signs of the forecast gales approaching, a gentle cruise under headsail only took us around the corner and into the Medina, carefully steered to avoid the exclusion zone surrounding the new breakwater. We were greeted with a warm welcome at Cowes Yacht Haven, with its excellent facilities, before squaring the boat away for what was to be a windy night ahead - and heading ashore for a customary ‘welcome drink’

An experienced member is chosen to act as Officer of the Day (OOD) and it is his or her job to assess weather conditions – especially wind strength, based on the suitability of participating dinghies and equipment, the experience and fitness of helms and crew. If necessary they will rearrange crews to ensure that each boat is suitably manned. The aim is to sail in company, so a vessel with a similar speed to a Wayfarer, GP14, Sport 14, Comet Duo or Trio, Laser2000, or Enterprise means that the fleet can naturally stay together. On arrival at the launch site (either a public slipway or a friendly sailing

in the Pier View. As our final morning dawned, the smell of bacon butties wafted from below decks. A quick poke out of the hatch confirmed that the breeze was finally abating, and all was looking fair for a gentle sail downwind towards Port Solent. We began by experimenting with the time-honoured cruising technique of poling out the jib. But, with a substantial symmetric spinnaker on board and the wind still very light, it was too much to resist the temptation of setting additional sail area. Although the F40 normally races with up to 12 on board, we were just five in number, so short-handed to say the least. However, with plenty of spinnaker experience between us, we were able to hoist and handle the spinnaker confidently, and so coax a few extra knots of boat speed. Finally, picking up the channel markers to take us back in to Portsmouth Harbour, we reflected on our experience. Whilst we may certainly have been wearing plenty more waterproofs than customers who chose Sunsail’s more exotic charter options, our charter more than lived up to its reputation for quality and service, and we had had a fantastic opportunity to discover some of the world’s finest cruising waters – which just so happen to be right on our very doorstep! www.sunsail.com

club) the dinghies are rigged and equipment checked, including oars or paddles, first aid gear, smoke signals, etc. This is followed by a briefing given by the OOD who will confirm the objective, course and muster locations to be followed, ensuring that time spent crossing shipping lanes is as short as possible. Once afloat the dinghies sail in

loose company, making sure that they are close enough to read each others sail numbers. In the event of a capsize or gear failure the fleet will heave to in the vicinity of the problem boat and provide assistance if requested by the OOD. Day sailing is a skill that involves experience and knowledge and that may be easily learned in company – a fun way to discover dinghy cruising!

The Cody Sailing Club, which is based at Farnborough, takes its name from Colonel Cody, the famous aviation pioneer. The club strongly encourages new members. The club is a recognised RYA Training Centre and tuition is provided to RYA standards, covering RYA Levels 1, 2 and Seamanship Skill. Training is conducted at locations to mirror the day sail conditions. The club also organises long weekend sailing camps, at Poole Harbour, Chichester Harbour and also at Rutland Water. The club organises a two-week sailing/ camping holiday each year, based on farm sites in the West Country, which includes some night sailing. Yacht cruiser rallies are also popular. www.codysailingclub.co.uk

Winterising

top tips

When putting your boat to bed for the winter there are a few things to consider to protect it through the winter months, explains RYA Chief Instructor, Motor Cruising and Power, Rachel Andrews. This list is by no means exhaustive but it will give you a few top tips.

9

Where possible, remove the batteries and keep them warm and dry over the winter, fully charged or topped up at least every four to six weeks. Batteries left uncharged for long periods may need to be replaced completely. If you’re unable to remove batteries or if the boat is staying on its mooring, leave them fully topped up and regularly recharged, as full batteries are less likely to freeze in subzero temperatures.

10

1

Use it. The best way to winterise a boat is to use it as it’s designed to move! A boat contains a multitude of systems that hate inactiv ity – particularly the engine. There are plenty of other items that would benefit from winterisation but if you decide not to use your boat in the winter and only do one thing, do it on the engine.

5

Check the gearbox or outdrive oil and replace if it looks cloudy or milky.

3

Whether your boat is being hauled out for the winter or not, fill your fuel tank to prevent condensation, which in turn prevents the growth of diesel bug.

4

6

Check the water pump impeller and consider replacing it when de-winterising in case the blades have deformed over the winter.

Keel cooling systems can be left alone providing they contain the correct water/ antifreeze mixture. This can be checked using a strength tester available from marinas and good car spares outlets. Note that antifreeze has a limited life and if it has to be replaced then it is a good time to replace any suspect hoses. Keep the old hoses as emergency replacements.

2

First on the list - general engine cleaning and observation. Shine plenty of light, use a mirror on a stick or a digital camera to see under and behind things. Dry the bilges to prevent corrosion and, if necessary, paint them white to highlight any leaks and drips in the future.

7

Relax or remove all belts and protect the drive wheels. Rust on these can chew up a belt very quickly in the new season.

Most diesel engines use either raw water or keel cooling – both of which need attention when winterising.

Raw water systems require draining before leaving for the winter, by closing the water inlet valve, or sea cock, disconnecting a hose from the circulating pump, (unless there is a dedicated tap or plug), then refilling with a strong solution of fresh antifreeze. Run the engine to fully circulate the new solution. Simply draining the system is unlikely to remove all the water inside, which may then freeze and cause damage over the winter.

Change the engine oil and replace the oil filter before leaving your boat for the winter. Leaving the old oil contaminated with the acidic by-products of combustion inside the engine block will shorten the engine’s life and a neglected oil system will cause expensive damage. Also consider using flushing oil or a flushing additive during the oil change, which helps to remove more of the contaminants.

8

Remove the air intake filter and block the intake with an oily rag to prevent rust inside; do the same for the exhaust. Squirt a little oil into the intake and turn over the engine, (without starting), to distribute it over the cylinder walls. Be sure to place a warning about the blocked intake on the engine control panel to prevent anyone turning the engine over.

11

If you’re taking the boat out of the water make sure it is angled bow upwards slightly to enable rain water to run off immediately from covers, decks and cockpit.

15

Remove any foodstuffs which may be damaged by the frost or attract unwanted visitors.

16

Store all linen, clothing, blankets, curtains, etc, ashore – washed and dry. Prop the fridge door open – mould will form in less than a week if left closed. Ensure throughventilation. Leave cupboards and drawers open; prop up bunk cushions, leave underberth locker lids open. Get circulation into every possible conceivable nook and cranny.

12

17

13

18 19

Covers should keep water out but allow air to circulate. Proper through-draught will prevent condensation which leads to dry rot, mould and corrosion (especially if left for more than a single season). The internal freshwater supply system also requires attention. Drain the entire system including tank, pump, calorifier, water filters and all taps, especially shower mixers. Look for any areas where water could still be trapped in pipes. Plastic piping is less vulnerable than copper piping but rigid unions can still be damaged by freezing.

14

If you have a water-based central heating system using antifreeze then the same checks carried out to the keel cooled engine system should be applied. If the system doesn’t use antifreeze then it should be drained as for the freshwater supply.

Ensure tight-fitting covers for deckinstalled electronics and consider spraying behind electronics with water-repellent silicone. Check your navigation lights are still serviceable.

If leaving the boat afloat, check all through-hull fittings for leaks and corrosion. Don’t forget to check your stern glands and repack with grease if appropriate.

Make a list of what you have done to winterise the boat so you remember what to reverse in the spring and leave signs all around the boat so no-one accidentally operates a winterised system.

Our professionals follow a winterisation checklist that covers everything from making sure your boat cradle and legs are in good condition to receive your vessel before it comes out of the water, to removing gas bottles and batteries, to keeping the pervasive British damp at bay – as well as offering technical knowhow on winterising engines.

To prepare your boat for shrink wrapping, ensure that the decks and hull are reasonably clean. Depending on type and size of vessel and whether the mast is in situ, it can then take around 6-8 hours for two technicians to shrink wrap a 10 metre vessel. Costs start at around £30 per metre. When it gets to spring and it’s time to unwrap your boat again, expect this to take around half an hour for a 10 metre vessel. No professional skills are required, simply some sharp cutting implements.

By shrink wrapping your boat, it will be protected from damage by the harshest of elements during winter storage or road transport. As shrink wrap is custom-fitted to every boat, it doesn’t flap about or chafe the boat. Many people chose shrink wrapping as an alternative to traditional

MINI MASTER CLASS

THE

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

STAYING IN SAILING SHAPE

INTERVAL TRAINING

Keeping fit and staying in sailing shape during the off-season is a sure way to ensure that when your boat comes out of hibernation next spring the aches and pains are kept to a minimum - even if your sailing skills still need the cobwebs blowing away. Making even small improvements in aerobic fitness is easy and cheap to do. Anything that gets your heart rate up and keeps it up for a prolonged period will be doing you some good. So do whatever you enjoy most, whether running, cycling, swimming, rowing, playing a team or racquet sport, walking fast. Variety is the best recipe. The better rounded your choice of activities the better prepared your body gets.

AEROBIC FITNESS

How long you should exercise for will depend on you; the fitter you are the longer you will be able to keep going for, but don’t go mad to start with! If you’re only just beginning on a new fitness programme start with a comfortable 15-20 minute session and slowly build up so you can do at least an hour of continuous exercise three times a week. And don’t forget, recovery is as important as the work out. It’s during this time the body adapts to the benefits of the training.

Aerobic fitness is the physical foundation to all sailing; the better your aerobic fitness the greater your ability is to sail at your best. As soon as you become tired, and your body can’t keep up with the physical demands being placed on it, your performance level inevitably drops and mental function takes a big hit as fatigue takes its toll.

Masterclass

You know what it’s like when the breeze gets up and your muscles are screaming as you bid to keep the boat going as fast as possible.

Part of aerobic training is your body’s ability to work at high intensity for long periods of time. The only way to be able to replicate the ferocity of breezy, intense racing on the water is by doing ‘interval training’ on land. Interval training means doing short, sharp but intense sets of sprints, repetitions, revolutions; whatever exercise you’re doing that pushes your ‘lactate threshold’ on each go. How long each hard interval and each recovery interval should be depends on your level of fitness. But it’s important you keep active in the rest period as this speeds recovery between bouts. Don’t stop completely!

Remember, if you are new to exercise consult your GP before starting any training programme! For some great sailing warm up exercises check out the RYA’s Sailing Fitness – Warm Up video with RYA and British Sailing Team Sports Scientist Tim Jones at www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UbdL3KZnDA

BASIC STRENGTH Strength is quite a complex concept – muscular strength, muscular endurance and muscular power all contribute to how ‘strong’ you are. The boat you sail and your role on that boat will determine what parts of your body need to be strongest. However, most sailors would benefit from having good basic strength in the major muscles and movement planes. Once you know the muscle groups you want to improve there are three main types of strength training: ■ Circuits – using your own body weight as the resistance ■ Machine-based weights - bicep curl, lap press, shoulder press, leg press, etc ■ Free weights – dumbbells, barbells, bench press, etc

Going cruising? Go local! From the Caribbean’s newest premium rum offering, to beers and ciders from home shores

THE number one drinking rule for cruising sailors is always to try the local drinks, especially if it’s on tap and locals are drinking it. At this time of year, cruising thoughts may well take you to the sunny Caribbean, on the ARC to St Lucia, or by plane to a charter yacht. And, even if you’re just dreaming, you inevitably think of rum, the Caribbean local speciality. St Lucia has Bounty Rum at the end of the ARC’s rainbow and Antigua has Antigua Rum. But it is Mount Gay from Barbados that is everywhere over there - and over here! Founded in 1703, it’s acknowledged as the world’s first rum brand. Many UK sailors will be familiar with Mount Gay Eclipse, which was created in 1911 to celebrate a total eclipse of the Caribbean sun that year.

We’ll beat your boat insurance renewal price today!

IN THE DRINK

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.

www.allatsea.co.uk

hop aroma, citrusy and malty, all adding up to an excellent four per cent a.b.v summer ale. No West Country cruise should pass without a taste of real cider. Cornish Rattler (a type of Cornish apple) from Healey’s Cyder Farm, Truro, is another must-try. A robust six per cent and slightly cloudy, it is a favourite with food at the Royal Fowey Yacht Club on the Fowey river on Cornwall’s south coast. Visiting yachtsmen on the floating pontoon moorings on the opposite shore are welcome to use the club’s own dinghy dock and enjoy its bar, food and view.

A DECADE DELIVERS

Now, over 100 years later, Mount Gay has created a new premium rum, Mount Gay Black Barrel, as a partner to Eclipse, not to replace it. The UK launch took place at this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week regatta, hosted by Barbadian Miguel Smith, Mount Gay’s London-based international brand ambassador. “Black Barrel has taken 10 years to develop,” he told me during an exclusive interview for All At Sea. “The name comes from the maturing process in ex-Bourbon oak barrels charred and blackened inside, first for six months and then transferred to ‘finish’ in a second black-charred cask for a further 12 to 18 months before bottling at 43 per cent. “This delivers flavour as well as a very dark golden colour. The nose is spice with oaky vanilla and almond overtones,” he said - and my tasting panel agreed we couldn’t put it better! The bottle is a yacht-friendly flat, oval shape which will not roll off the ship’s table with a long, easy-to-grip neck for dispensing. Unlike Eclipse, it’s not in supermarkets yet so internet sourcing (or visiting Barbados) is the answer for Christmas treats this year - try www.MasterofMalt.com at £31.45 per 70cl bottle.

Interviewing Miguel Smith at the launch party.

TASTE OF CORNWALL

If you’re planning for next year and thinking of cruising home waters, the West Country has plenty of local beers and ciders plus Camel Valley has excellent Cornish/English sparkling wines. One of the best Cornish ales also started life as a novelty to celebrate our total eclipse of the sun in 1999. Named Daylight Robbery (got it?) it was so well received the St Austell brewery renamed it Tribute and it’s now in supermarkets and on draught in pubs all over the south of England. Golden, gently hoppy bitterness and a fresh tingle on the tongue - all good reasons to be popular. More Cornwall-centric and a ‘must-try’ under the cruising rule is Skinners Betty Stogs, brewed in Truro. Light copper colour,

BRITTANY BREWS

If cruising in Brittany is the plan, you are spoilt for choice with artisanal beers from French microbreweries and speciality ciders from St Malo to Concarneau. Follow the rule. If it looks rustic and you have never heard of it, it’s probably a good local drink of a type and taste you’ll never get at home.
