CONTENTS 12 BOATING PEOPLE 16 KIT 17 SHORE STYLE
FROM PAGE 1: Bart’s Bash, the global sailing race organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, set a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Sailing Race within 24 hours. The event was a tribute to the memory of the British Olympic gold medalist who died aged 36 when the Swedish Americas Cup catamaran he was sailing in San Francisco Bay capsized in May 2013. While the Bart’s Bash technical team were still processing the data submitted by some of the 768 venues which took part, the threshold of 2,500 boats sailing in regattas including at least 25 boats, the key criteria to meet the record, had certainly been passed. “The event has proved a huge success and we are delighted to announce that, subject to ratification, we have set the new Guinness World Record,” said Richard Percy, CEO of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. “The turnout exceeded our expectations and we are very happy that we provided a truly global opportunity for people to come together and enjoy sailing. We hope the event will become a regular feature in the global sailing calendar.”
3
The event was a worldwide celebration of sailing attracting more than 18,000 participants of all ages and abilities, taking part in 68 different countries. Races were held globally between 0.00 and 23.59 GMT on 21 OCTOBER. For many people it was their first time racing or even sailing. Bart’s Bash was set up to remember Olympic gold medallist Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, to inspire the next generation of sailors, to encourage clubs to open their doors and to fundraise in support of the ASSF’s charitable programmes. The Bart’s Bash technical team created a system capable of handicapping several thousands of boats across hundreds of classes. The provisional results are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The processed data will be validated by Guinness World Records before the end of the year. All the funds raised will support the development and delivery of the Foundation’s charitable programmes, nationally and internationally. The Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre, in Weymouth, was buzzing with more than 200 sailors taking part. Foundation Trustee iain Percy, who won a gold and silver medal with Bart at the last two Olympic Games, sailed with the older of Andrew’s two sons, four-year-old Freddie. iain said: “it has been an incredible day. it has never happened in any other sports that so many people have come together to remember one person; it’s very special. And it was special for Freddie and i to sail together here on these waters, for the first time after the Olympics. “Today is a celebration of Bart but most importantly a celebration of our sport. it’s
been such a success; many people today were inspired to sail for the first time. it has been a great fun race, and that’s why it will last into the future.” Foundation Trustee, Sir Ben Ainslie, raced an RS400 with his girlfriend Georgie Thompson at Queen Mary Sailing Club, which raised more than £10,000 for the ASSF. He said: “The response has been unbelievable, almost overwhelming; a true testament to Bart’s popularity within the sailing community.” At the PSP Southampton Boat Show, racing took place beside the show’s marina and in total there were 51 race goers, totalling 37 boats. The race winner was Stuart Hudson sailing a Firefly with crewmate Sally Wakefield, who was proud to win an RS Tera donated by national Boat Shows, for his home club, Keyhaven
Yacht Club. Stuart said he was delighted at winning, and said: “Although i can only speak for our tiny part of Bart’s Bash the event was sailed in good humour and great spirits and all classes came together to remember Andrew.” And it wasn’t just dinghies that took part. More than 130 former Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew and skippers spanning nine race editions over 19 years were joined by Clipper Race chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston on a 24.8 mile course from Gosport, specially created for the Bart’s Bash event. Sir Robin said: “it was a proud moment for all at the Clipper Race Yacht Club to be able to join together, be part of history and raise funds for the first Bart’s Bash.” Elsewhere in the Solent dozens of Royal Southern members swelled the numbers
taking part in the Club’s AVEVA OCTOBER Regatta as well as joining forces with other Hamble clubs. A total of 49 yachts raced a short course in sunshine and a solid breeze from a start line near Hill Head. Dinghy racing for Foxer and Optimist classes was also held on the River Hamble. The Wakatere Boating Club in new Zealand, the nyack Boat Club in the United States, the Real Club nautico de Calpe in Spain, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Dar es Salaam Yacht Club in Tanzania, the Cagliari Yacht Club/Windsurfing Club Cagliari in italy and many more had more than 100 participants registered. At the iSAF Sailing World Championships in Santander, Spain, sailors and coaches took to the water in an assortment of classes to remember the man who had been a friend, and inspiration, to many.

the Bart’s Bash effect
Spirits high at festival of boating
AS the 2014 PSP Southampton Boat Show drew to a close, organisers reported that more than 112,000 people had enjoyed the festival of boating. Exhibitors and visitors made the most of the improving economy and glorious weather throughout the 10 days. Murray Ellis, Managing Director, National Boat Shows said: “The PSP Southampton Boat Show 2014 has been a great success. More than 10,000 visitors got out on the water, families enjoyed a
ride on the Boat Show Eye and boaters bought everything from canoes to multi million pound yachts. “The weather has been glorious and spirits have been high, once again confirming the PSP Southampton Boat Show as one of the world’s leading boat shows.” “The Show kicked off in style with TV star Matt Baker arriving on board one of the Show’s star attractions, the tall ship Phoenix, accompanied by Iain Percy
OBE and ambassadors from the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. “We’ve been delighted to have the Foundation as the Show’s official charity and so pleased to be able to join in with the worldwide Bart’s Bash event on the Show’s final day.” Strong sales were reported throughout the show, with the very first sale of the show, with the very first sale of a boat being made by 10.30am on the opening day.
Image: Jak Bennett For anyone taking part in the global Bart’s Bash it was impossible not to be left feeling inspired by the end of the day, whether that was sailing on a yacht on the south coast, a dinghy at an inland venue or, in my case, sailing a borrowed Bosun as the sun set against the backdrop of Canary Wharf at Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre in london. It was a brilliant evening as a group of old friends came together to enjoy some of the closest yet certainly the most light-hearted racing I’ve done in a while. Speaking to friends who had sailed elsewhere in Bart’s Bash races to ask about their experience, wherever the venue and whatever the class, the words ‘privileged’, ‘exciting’ and, most of all, ‘fun’ came up repeatedly. It was a day that, simply, just had that effect. From olympians to complete novices, this incredible event encouraged so many people, of all ages and abilities, out on to the water,. It was especially great to hear about so many youngsters taking part, particularly when you think that Andrew Bart Simpson is so often remembered for his readiness to help and to inspire young sailors. Certainly, the sense of pride among the young topper

sailors who competed on the same race track as Sir Ben Ainslie, at Queen Mary Sailing Club was great to see. And there’s no doubt that Bart would be delighted to see his four-year-old son Freddie loving every minute of racing the Star at Weymouth. the youngest solo sailor to take part was five-year-old Harry Mitchell, a competitor at Stubbers Young Mariners Sailing Club in essex. As a thank you to those who donated to his Just Giving page, he even offered free trips in his boat! Hats off to Harry and to all those who used the event to fundraise for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, which has some truly worthwhile projects in the pipeline. It will be great to see the inspirational impact of the ASSF, as going forward even more youngsters will have the opportunity to get involved with the wonderful sport of sailing. All in all, for 18,000 sailors around the world, Bart’s Bash was a phenomenal feat undertaken with quiet confidence and infectious enthusiasm by the organisers and many volunteers, and one that has undoubtedly left participants with a lasting memory of an amazing day – and in such a way that truly did justice to the great man himself, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson.
Push The BOaT OuT even furTher in 2015 RYA Push the Boat Out 2015 will take place over nine days from 9-17 May, providing taster sessions across the UK in sailing and windsurfing. Over the weekend of 17-18 May 2014, 24,000 people ‘pushed the boat out’ over just two days and similar success is hoped for in 2015. RYA Club Support Advisor Jackie Bennetts said: “Push the Boat Out was a huge success last year, one of our biggest and best yet and it was fantastic to see so many clubs and centres taking part with record breaking numbers of people getting out on the water. “Following this success we wanted to
ensure that next year’s event would offer more events and opportunities for people to discover their local sailing providers so we have extended Push the Boat Out to take place over nine days instead of just one weekend.” RYA Push the Boat Out is all about people connecting with their local sailing club or provider and discovering how easy it is to get involved in the sport. In 2014 17,000 people went out on the water with sailing clubs gaining more than 1,000 personal memberships. More than 500 families became members of the clubs they visited: www.rya.org.uk/go/PTBO

Dinghies in the dark SAILING teams from all over the UK lined up to compete in the 2014 edition of the Crewsaver 24 Hour Race. Hosted by West Lancashire Yacht Club, the 24 Hour Race – now in its 48th year – saw 64 teams of varying sizes race, non-stop, around a 2km triangular course on the Marine Lake in Southport for 24 hours. A light and shifty easterly wind plagued the start. South Staffordshire Sailing Club A team (South Staffs), sailing a Lark, took an early lead in lap one. Shifting winds then played into the hands of the spinnaker-less Enterprise and Firefly teams allowing them to climb up the leader board. As the sun set, the wind started to stabalise, producing a constant easterly breeze but disorientation for some inexperienced teams. By daybreak, tired crews reported fair conditions on the water with South Staffs and Enterprise Association switching places many times throughout the night. With one hour to go, there was still no clear victor, with South Staffs only
holding the Enterprise Association off the top of the podium by the slimmest of margins. As the crowd amassed for the end of the race, Covenham Sailing Club’s team capsized outside the clubhouse, to loud cheers from those watching. In the end, South Staff’s lead was too much to challenge and they took home the Southport Centenary Trophy for the second consecutive year. However, Issac Marsh and Robin James from Scammonden Water SC stole the limelight by sailing the whole 24hrs with just the two of them, raising money for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. Ian Donaldson, Commodore of theWest Lancashire Yacht Club said: “The 24 Hour Race continues to be a major event in the sailing calender. This year saw an increase in entry numbers with some clubs sailing for the first time. I must thank Crewsaver, as title sponsor, as well as GJW Insurance and Robinsons Brewery for their invaluable support.”

World first for disabled sailors
The norton Rose Fulbright Sail the World challenge set sail from Southampton in September 2012, and since then has carried the Olympic Torch to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and crossed the Indian Ocean to Kochi, India. She took part in the International Fleet Review in Sydney harbour, and in February was the first mixed-ability vessel to sail around Cape horn. Duncan Souster, Chief Executive of the Jubilee Sailing Trust, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by all those on board. They have travelled 51,000 miles and visited over 30 countries to promote the message of inclusion and in the process had a truly lifechanging experience navigating the world’s oceans. “The dedication of our expert team is helping to change the perception of what can be achieved by disabled people.”
TO JO D IN A Y !
ThE first ship to circle the world with disabled crew members completed its two-year journey as it moored alongside hMS Belfast on the Thames. Lord nelson crewed by a disabled and able-bodied team was accompanied by Tenacious, its 65-metre sister ship. During its voyage quadriplegic, deaf, PTSD and road traffic sufferers all crewed the ship. The 55-metre ship was manoevred under Tower Bridge to its mooring by 38 people of whom 13 were disabled, including some blind, wheelchair bound and epileptic crew members. Both ships belong to the Jubilee Sailing Trust, which gives people of all physical abilities, including those with significant disabilities, the opportunity to experience life changing experiences outside their normal routine. Lord nelson, which cost £2 million to build, was custom built and utilises technology that includes a mouthpiece that allows quadriplegics to steer the ship with their mouth. Purpose-built equipment means that crew members can reach the crow’s nest at sea, which is so high people can see the curvature of the earth. Partially sighted or blind people can climb the rigging and the ship also has wheelchair lifts between decks, braille signage, hearing loops and hand rails. Jubilee Sailing Trust’s partnership with global legal practice norton Rose Fulbright was established in October 2012.

Pushing the limits
In an unprecedented opening day at the Extreme Sailing series Act 6 in Istanbul the public and national media witnessed some extraordinary adrenaline fueled racing, with every team pushing hard – and at times too hard, with two boats being dismasted. In near perfect sailing conditions that topped out at 20 knots, the French team, Groupama, with too much load on their rig at the windward mark, were the first to lose their new mast during race four, which came after their best start to an event this year. In a completely unrelated incident in the seventh and final race of the day, Alinghi suffered the same fate, with Alinghi’s helmsman Morgan Larson admitting: “We pushed a little too hard in that puff... it’s probably a lesson I’ve learnt there. There is a limit and we found it.”

Boskalis will spend two weeks suring October shaping the core, using an excavator and a floating barge. the project will then be left over the winter to
allow settlement and strength increase of the subsoil, with the placement of rock armour and reshaping of the breakwater to its final profile due to take place in 2015. the breakwater is already proving a popular spot for wildlife, especially birds. the exclusion zone surrounding this major construction project remains in place, which is marked by large, lit navigation buoys, and any vessel not involved in the works is reminded to stay out of the exclusion zone at all times. see Cowes Local Notices to Mariners for the latest information: www. cowesharbourcommission.co.uk

Jon, whose entry takes up the December slot in the calendar entitled ‘end of the season’ said: “it’s amazing that this little picture that i just snapped early one morning on my mobile phone has taken on a life of its own.” Jon was joined at the prize giving by James Longden who was collecting prizes on behalf of Colin Jex, whose shot taken of ‘eilach an Naoimh in the Garvellochs took the July slot, while Andrew Grierson and family collected prizes on behalf of Jo Grierson whose misty morning photo sits in the september spot on the calendar. Four-and-half year old Ollie Grierson told us he is going to sail his ilovesailing duck in the bath, while his sister, two-year-old year Amelia, told us she just loved her duck! “the calibre of photos we received for the competition was amazing, making it so difficult to choose just 12 winners,” said emma slater, ilovesailing co-ordinator. View all the calendar competition entries and winning photos at www.facebook.com/ryailovesailing the calendars are available to buy from the rYA, at just £3.50.

TECH BRAND EXPANDS
SOUTHAMPTON Solent graduate and AAS columnist Geoff Holt, the first quadriplegic sailor to sail solo across the Atlantic, unveiled the university’s latest exciting technological development – an innovation which promises to change the face of small boat inshore racing. The PSP Southampton Boat Show gave the industry its first real look at ‘Solent Whisper’ - a 5.9m sailing catamaran with a cutting-edge hydrofoil system. Designed and built using the state-of the-art yacht design and engineering facilities at Solent’s Warsash Maritime Academy and city centre campus, the
catamaran’s technology has already attracted attention from world class sailors during sea trials this summer. The revolutionary new hydrofoil system provides stability, ease and safety, which along with an affordable projected purchase price, has the potential to offer America’s Cup style sailing to the masses. The craft’s stable sailing style also means it could prove popular and accessible for disabled sailors. Primarily designed with ease and safety in mind, Solent Whisper has also exceeded expectations on the speed front. It comfortably achieves over 25 knots and it can ‘fly’ on its foils in as little as five knots of wind.
The new hydrofoil technology is the brainchild of Ron Price, a Solent yacht and powercraft design graduate who is now Senior Lecturer in Naval Architecture at the University’s Warsash Maritime Academy. The prototype is the result of months of hard work. It is hoped that a retail production version will be available for the London Boat Show in January. “I was very fortunate to have access to the incredible skill and knowledge of the engineering technicians, the support of staff, and use of the superb facilities at the University,” says Ron.
Zhik, specialist technical clothing brand, has appointed new UK retailers, including Fox’s Marine and Country, in Ipswich, Marine Superstore in Port Solent and Chichester and Yachting Solutions in Burnham on Crouch. Apollo Marine in Portland and Dinghykit. com in Ireland will also stock the 2015 product range. www.zhik.com

Sunbeams shine at Mylor A select group of fine old ladies of the sea have been celebrating their 90th birthdays throughout 2014. As the classic Falmouth Sunbeams emerge from their racing season, one of the oldest sisters of the fleet is showing off a new facelift completed by the expert hands of Mylor Yacht Harbour’s master shipwrights. Mylor Yacht Harbour is Cornwall’s busiest boatyard and marina, and the only yard in recent years to build new, wooden Sunbeams on the same lines as their elder sisters. Sunbeams have only ever been found as a racing class around the Isle of Wight – where most of them were originally built – and Falmouth. But while the Solent fleet has allowed new fibreglass versions into their

Roger Graffy has seen three new Sunbeams built at the Falmouth boat yard. He says: “We have the skills here at Mylor and we’ve wanted to put them to good use and show people what Cornwall can create. The Sunbeam’s are one of the most respected classes in the Fal - it’s very serious racing and they are things of beauty.” The Falmouth Working Boat fleet also has its home at Mylor and annual events that welcome classic-enthusiasts include Falmouth Classics and Falmouth Regatta Week.
Aero association THe RS Aero was unveiled in March and has rapidly gained popularity since that first moment. Several hundred boats have already been ordered, all over the world, with the majority of owners aiming to race their boats. In response to that, a Class Association is being formed to organise events, communications, training and other activities. A Class Association Manager has also been appointed to work alongside a committee of owners and a network of
club fleet captains to get things underway. The RS Aero Class Association Manager will be Peter Barton, a talented, winning sailor across many classes and a respected coach. Since testing the boat, Peter has declared himself a fan, and is delighted that a fleet is being established at his home club, Lymington. Charlie Mill, Director of Ocean Safety presents the cheque to Clare Ross of the Ellen MacArthur Trust.
OCeAn Safety has presented a cheque for £500 to the ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Clare Ross, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Trust, said: “£500 will enable us to take one more young person in recovery from cancer on a four-day sailing trip next year. “That young person will spend those four days enjoying lots of sailing, crabbing competitions, a beach BBQ, a thrilling RIB ride, a tour around a lifeboat, afternoon tea at a yacht club and much much more - thank you for helping make such a difference to a young person’s life!” Ocean Safety has been servicing safety equipment left by yachtsmen at the company’s collection point which it established at the ellen MacArthur Cancer
Trust in east Cowes six months ago. For each item serviced the company has been making a donation from the fee to the Trust. Ocean Safety provides equipment to the Trust’s yachts and the relationship was taken a step further when both sides realised the benefits of the Trust’s base in east Cowes Marina as a collection point for the many visiting yachtsmen. The ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which helps to rebuild the lives of young cancer sufferers through sailing experiences, is conveniently located at east Cowes Marina. The safety equipment is collected and taken to the company’s service station in Southampton for maintenance before being returned to east Cowes for collection.

GIleS Scott’s overriding emotion at winning his second world title was one of ‘relief’ as he closed off a dominant performance at the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander. His was the only gold for the British Sailing Team, with bronze medals also going to Scott’s Finn class stablemate ed Wright in a nail-biting final day medal race, as well as 470 Women’s pairing Hannah Mills-Saskia Clark and nick Thompson in the laser to hit the British medal target of four in Santander. The British team also secured country qualification in each of the ten events for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at this first opportunity. Scott went into the Finn finale with a near unassailable margin of 20 points, and just needed to sail a clean race to add 2014 Worlds gold to his crown from Perth 2011, extending his winning run to nine regattas since his return to the Olympic campaign trail in September last year. Scott finished fourth in the 10-boat medal race to cap off his victory, celebrating with a swim in the Santander harbour in front of the packed spectator stands. “I’m very happy with the way this week has gone and this season has gone. I feel as if I am on track and just really relieved and happy to have come away with a victory here,” Scott explained. “I don’t really see myself as being unstoppable,” said the modest 27-year-old when questioned about his unbeaten streak. “I think there are still a lot of areas I can work on which is kind of what I try and focus on. I have had a great season and I have managed to win a lot of regattas this year so I hope it continues… It is important to being able to go into the Games as a favourite. ultimately, that is the goal going forward.”

The event attracted sailors and supporters from sailing clubs across Great Britain and gave youngsters the chance to experience big regatta racing without having to travel far from their home sailing clubs. The championships traditionally mark the end of the Junior racing season and are a key event for any young sailor wishing to be selected for the RyA Zone and Home Country squads, which are the first step on the pathway to Olympic Classes sailing. Head RyA High Performance Manager Chris Atherton said: “I have been particularly impressed to see large numbers of young sailors competing in the event for the first time.” Racing took place at Weymouth and Portland national Sailing Academy, Paignton Sailing Club, Bewl Valley Sailing Club, Dabchicks Sailing Club & West Mersea yacht Club, Blithfield Sailing Club, Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, Pembrokeshire yacht Club in Wales, largs Sailing Club in Scotland and Ballyholme yacht Club in northern Ireland www.ryaracingevents.org.uk

BOATING PEOPLE
Q&A with Peter AllAm, Chief exeCutive, wPNSA How did you get into tHis job? Before starting at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy I worked for London 2012 as Deputy Competition Manager for the Olympic Sailing events. In applying for this role I saw it as a tremendous opportunity to build on everything that was achieved at the Games so I was delighted to have been offered the position.
wHat is your sailing background?
Since first sailing a Cadet dinghy I have raced boats of all sizes. Notable successes have included a Bronze medal in the Flying Dutchman Class at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, competing in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and as a mainsheet trimmer in successful GBR Admirals Cup and Southern Cross teams. Over the years I have been fortunate to compete in numerous National, European and World championships in a wide variety of dinghies and keelboats.
wHat key events Have Happened at tHe wpnsa tHis year?
It has been another busy year. Significant events have included the largest ever RYA Youth Nationals, the RS Feva, 100 and 500 combined Nationals, Sail for Gold, GP14 Nationals, Wayfarer Europeans, 457 Optimists for their Nationals, the Cadet
National and World Championships and the Etchells National and European Championships. Most recently we hosted Bart’s Bash on behalf of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. That was a very special day! We still have the RYA South Zone Champs, national Rankers for the Olympic Classes and of course Speed Week to go.
wHat do you enjoy most about your job?
The sheer variety of what we do here coupled with a fantastic location. It is always a great pleasure getting to meet so many different and interesting people for the first time and also catching up with sailors from around the world who I have got to know over the last 30-odd years through my own sailing. Image: Cailah Leask
Andrew Simpson’s son Freddie took part in Bart’s Bash at WPNSA, with Iain Percy at the helm. Image – Christopher Ison/Bart’s Bash. Inset: Image - Geoff Moore Image: Cailah Leask
wHat is tHe biggest cHallenge?
We have a considerable range of activities taking place at the WPNSA and the challenge is to make sure we make full use of the facility without compromising any single activity. At the same time we need to balance the books and ensure a sustainable future.
wHat is your proudest moment?
Getting it right! By that I mean when those visiting the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, for whatever reason, go away having enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to coming back.
wHat makes tHe wpnsa itself so special?
The WPNSA is one of the few venues
in the UK that can host large sailing events involving hundreds of boats and competitors. We are fortunate to have access to the open waters of Weymouth Bay and the more sheltered area of Portland Harbour. This means we can sail pretty well all year round. We can back up what happens on the water with some excellent shore side facilities. We are open to all members of the public and our facilities are regularly used by local community and corporate groups in a variety of ways. We are also very proud of the fact we are recognised for the access we can provide for disabled sailors.
favourite time of year at wpnsa?
It is tempting to say the winter when we can come up for air, but it has to be the summer months when there is so much going on.

Competition
Worth over £700 - enter now! We’ve teamed up with our friends at McMurdo Group to give one lucky reader the chance to win a Smartfind S10 or S20 AIS MOB device and the New SmartFind M10 AIS Class B.
Did you know that AIS can save your life? NOTIFY – LOCATE – TRACK – RESCUE Localised rescue, when every second counts….
Finding a MOB in the water and navigating your vessel to their location can be difficult, particularly at night or in strong tides. A survivor recovery system which uses AIS, to automatically signal the crew member’s vessel, greatly increases the chances of identifying the MOB’s location and subsequently recovering them from the water. Smartfind AIS MOB devices, provide near immediate notification to the parent or neighbouring vessels of a Man Overboard (MOB) incident and provide a means of location to determine the position of the MOB. When combined with a SmartFind M10 AIS Class B Transponder and AIS Viewer software running on your Windows laptop (or existing compatible plotter), an activated AIS MOB device will transmit the position of the MOB, which will be displayed as a GPS located target icon. A range and bearing to the exact location is provided and updated in real time, to aid recovery of the drifting MOB. Smartfind AIS MOB devices have a built-in, high precision GPS receiver - which updates every 60 seconds - assuring accuracy of the data transmitted. They will transmit continuously for up to 24 hours.

EVENt PREVIEW VolVo oceAn RAce 2014-15 Image: Rick Tomlinson/ Team SCA
On 11 October, seven teams will cross the start line for the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, which has grown from its origins at the Whitbread Race in 1973 to become known as the ‘everest of sailing’. starting from alicante, spain, the teams will compete in the brand new Volvo 65 class, racing 38,739 nm around the globe. 11 stopover venues will host in-port races, bringing the ocean action up close and personal to crowds at each race village, with the results contributing to the overall score of the race.
Image: Teams Campos VOR65/Fansisco Vignale
FoR the next two editions of the race, teams will sail a brand new onedesign class - the Volvo ocean 65. the introduction of the Volvo ocean 65 has not only lowered the cost of a competitive campaign by around 50 per cent but has also opened the door to new competitors. the shift to a one-design solution is a radical departure for the race, and one that will increase emphasis on the racing, with slightly less of a demand on physical strength. the race will be won on crew performance and tactics rather than on technical development. However, crew sizes have reduced –
dropping from 10 on board the Volvo 70 used in the last edition - reduced to just 8 (11 for the all-female entry), bringing in a whole new dynamic. the Volvo ocean 65 is designed by Farr Yacht Design in the United States, with a consortium of four boatyards taking care of the build process: Persico (Italy) – the hull, daggerboards and some internal structure; Multiplast (France) deck and some components; Decision (Switzerland) internal structure; Green Marine (UK) additional components and final assembly.

36,000 man hours have gone into the build of each boat, over a period of some seven months, and in the UK alone, some 67 companies have contributed to the build. Media stations and broadcast facilities have been an integral part of the build and fit out. on each boat, there are five fixed camera positions and two uplink points, which can be remotely controlled to give coverage from all angles. In an emergency, the cameras can be set to record automatically and a distress signal sent to race control, all at the touch of a button.

n 2014-15 will be the third time Alicante has hosted the start of the Volvo Ocean Race, and the second since the race set up its permanent HQ in the city. n the 2014-15 edition of the race is only 531nm shorter than the longest course in the event’s history in 2011-12. n All boats have had to qualify by sailing 2,000nm non-stop (3,700km). However, there were restrictions on which events boats were allowed to take part in prior to the VOR, to ensure fair preparations. n Due to the sheer size of the race, 38,739 nautical miles across five continents and 11 ports, two identical race villages are required and will leapfrog each other across the globe. n Official logistics provider, GAC Pindar, has already travelled over 30,000 miles to recce each host port. By the end of the race, GAC Pindar employees, including 11 permanent staff, will have worked over 21,000 man hours. n the 2011-12 edition was the closest race in the event’s history. On more than 15 occasions, the boats arrived within 10 minutes of each other and on more than 10 occasions, the boats crossed the finish line within five minutes.
introducing the teams
n each team must race with two crew members born after 1 October 1984, the ‘Under 30s’. n the maximum speed through water of 42 knots was reached by Abu Dhabi on the second to last leg in 2011-12. n the maximum wind speed recorded in the previous edition was 70 knots in the Southern Ocean. n the 11 previous races add up to a combined route distance of almost 350,000 nautical miles divided into a total of 74 legs. n 48 different nationalities have sailed the race since 1973. the UK has the highest number of participants, exactly 464 sailors. n the last time an all-female team competed in the race was in 2001-02, when lisa Charles (now lisa McDonald) skippered Amer Sports too.

Half the team, (which is predominenetly American and Kiwi in nationality), will be competing in the race for the first time. the first seeds for this joint U.S./ turkish campaign were sewn some seven years before the start of the 2014-15 race, when skipper Charlie enright and watch leader Mark towill met on the set of Disney sailing movie, Morning light. Several Volvo Ocean Race veterans including Jerry Kirby coached the thenteenagers. the youngsters were inspired. thanks to the support of Alvimedica and their sailing-fan CeO Cem Bozkurt the pair’s dream of launching their own challenge came true in early 2014 when their team was officially launched in Istanbul. Team bRunel Bouwe Bekking has six Volvo Ocean Race campaigns behind him but, despite several near-misses, has yet to top the podium. Team Sca team SCA enters the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 with two big firsts already under its belt – the first all-women’s team to enter the event since 2001-02 and the first to announce its campaign for the 12th edition. Since the launch back in September 2012, the team tested dozens of candidates before finalising their race squad. Despite their lack of recent Volvo Ocean Race experience, the crew are by no means novices in offshore sailing with several, including Brits Sam Davies and Dee Caffari, having circumnavigated the globe singlehanded. the team also includes three who were members of the last women’s crew in the Volvo Ocean Race, Amer Sports too, in 2001-02 – Abby ehler (GBR), liz Wardley (AUS) and Carolijn Brouwer (NeD). Other British members of the squad include Olympian Annie lush, and meteorologist libby Greenhalgh. Also on board are Switzerland’s Justine and elodie-Jane Mettraux, who will become the first sisters to have taken part in the 41-year history of the race. Team eSpaña Iker Martínez returns to skipper Spain’s eighth challenge in the Volvo Ocean Race alongside the man who helped him win gold in the Athens Olympics in the 49ers class, Xabi Fernández. the pair - both threetimes veterans of the race -will once again lead a talented international crew after spearheading telefónica’s bid in the 2011-12 race, which foundered after winning the first three legs. Martínez and Fernández were late to launch their challenge in June 2014 so needed to call on the vastly experienced Frenchman Michel Desjoyeaux to help prepare their crew for the challenge ahead. Team veSTaS WinD Denmark’s team Vestas Wind was the seventh and last team to announce their participation in the Volvo Ocean Race less than two months before October’s start in Alicante. the entry was the perfect marriage of a sport that relies on wind and a company which is one of the world’s only energy companies to base its strategy totally on wind. With so little time to organise their challenge, Vestas opted to go for solid Volvo Ocean Race experience to lead their team in the form of four-time competitor Chris Nicholson. the Australian was at the helm of the CAMPeR and emirates team New Zealand crew that finished second in the 2011-12 edition.

Shore Style GeorGiA Pitt
Contemporary classic
For a fresh burst of colour to brighten things up as the nights draw in, Gill’s Classic Crew Jacket has been given a re-vamp with some great new contemporary colour options, like this lovely bright blue. Snug fleece on the inside and a waterproof, breathable outer will see you shake off the elements this winter. There’s space for corporate branding too, so why not kit your whole team out? RRP: £100 www.gill-uk.com
With an eye for detail and a passion for all things nautical, fashion journalist Georgia Pitt ensures you step from boat to shore in seamless style with a round-up of the latest trends.
A bit of heart
A chunky silver necklace adds a casual twist to a formal outfit, or if you are just relaxing on the boat for the afternoon it offers a sense of luxe in the everyday. This number from The White Company is a chunky take on a classic; the gentle curve and soft edges give off a casual chic vibe that will suit any occasion. Want to tone it down? Opt for a classic silver chain. RRP: £55 www.thewhitecompany.co.uk
Colour complete
Just because it is colder doesn’t mean that colour can’t be at the fore of every outfit! Take these sneakers, the chunky white sole and beet coloured upper are the perfect blend of the autumnal palette in a transseasonal shoe. The details are the hidden gems, with soft stitching around the joins and rope-style laces offering a hint of nautical boat shoe. RRP: £35 www.whitestuff.com

Show your support
It’s all yellow
Yellow is a colour I have fallen for over the summer, and it is brilliant to see it still bursting through the seams of autumn winter in the form of cable knits. Layered over a white shirt, it will be the bold finishing touch that is needed for a winter look. The super soft yarn will keep you warm while the traditional cable pattern will have you bang on trend. RRP: £90 www.henrilloyd.co.uk
Salt washed warmer Winter is rapidly approaching, and it’s time to add in a few great layering options - such as this Henley. Twisted yarns give off a gritty salt washed look to keep the sailor in you happy. The muted plum colour, simple cut and chunky wool make it an ideal winter layer. RRP: £59.95 www.whitestuff.com
Put a sock in it
As the weather gets colder, you begin to value your socks so why not invest in a really good pair, that not only keep you warm but also burst with colour and personality. We like this pair from Peper Harow, quintessentially British, offering a little spark to a formal outfit, yet the cotton is a sensible blend to keep your feet fresh and warm. RRP: £16 www.peperharowlondon.com
Bart’s Bash was a phenomenal worldwide success – but the fundraising continues! Show your ongoing support for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation - and step ashore in style - with Henri Lloyd’s ASSF-logo’d limited range, which includes the Cyclone Jacket, Fast-Dri Cap, and Fast Dri Silver polo. Poole Quay to th Parkstone Bay (3 miles) e hike Set off east along the waterfront following a clearly marked path, shared with cyclists, around Parkstone Bay, (Sustrans Route 25). Cross the large play area at Whitecliff; the small marina ahead is Parkstone Bay. Your destination is on the right, the low-slung shed that is Deep South Café. On the return walk, go via Poole Park and admire the fun on the lake; from dinghy sailing to model swan pedalos, it’s a wonderfully traditional boating park.

Party at the Quay
The Stable
Everyone’s favourite pizza/pie and cider joint! This may be a chain, but it’s a very fine one and right on the Quay! Starting in Bridport some eight years ago and concentrating on using the best local produce, they are growing in a very healthy way, with new opening on Fistral Beach and in Falmouth.
the re view
Great choice of ever-changing West Country ciders and live music every Sunday afternoon. My favourites were the ‘Durdle Door’ pizza - herb roasted potato, Dorset Blue Vinney, roast Spanish onions, spinach - and a pint of Dorset Nectar Wildcat. Gluten free and vegan friendly options are available.
Moor up on Quay wall if you dare, (approx £19 for a 25 footer), or go further along the quay into the more secure Poole Quay Boat Haven (£28, 01202 649488). Less than ten minutes walk away on Market Street, a quiet road behind the Quay, is the Guildhall Tavern. This remarkable institution, run by chef owners Frederick and Severine, serves fantastic French food; from grilled sardine fillets to proper snails and beef Bourguignon. Great for a special occasion; go for lunch if you can, when two courses from the table d’hôte will cost £15, excellent value for food of this consistent standard. I can recommend the homemade crispy tartlet with scallops and crab in a dill cream sauce, followed by chicken oysters, with shallots, carrots and courgettes in a cheddar and cream reduction - then a nap! They also do seafood platters to go.

Wiggle your way to The Pig
Deep South Café
This popular meeting place - for locals and boaters alike - has been pretty full whenever I’ve visited and the team are friendly and efficient. Owner Stéphane Rondos has brought some of his Belgian favourites to the table.
If you have bikes on board (or rent!) you can nip onto Route 25, which takes you north on smooth tarmac paths out of Poole and then wiggles out to the west, avoiding the main road into Wimborne Minster. Here you will find The Ticked Pig – a very popular restaurant with a loyal following that has a great outside catering van that I have seen at several food shows. I particularly like their hanghi lamb - worth travelling to try! The cycle is 8 miles via Route 25.
But it’s the small shed opposite that beckons me, with aromas of fresh bread and baked plums wafting through the chain curtain - they have their own micro bakery on site - heaven! Alena Dostalova learnt to throw dough around when she helped her grandfather bake in the Czech Republic, but extended her skills in the UK as patisserie chef. She now bakes all the cakes, pastries, breads and deserts for the cafe, fresh from the oven. Now, to lunch - I had been told that moules was the most popular dish, so I choose this as a starter, at £4.50, great value. (I’m told it’s also our best-farmed protein with the smallest carbon footprint!) They were good, and served with Alena’s breads of course. Followed by sea bass on ratatouille and my pal had the Belgian meatballs, with a sweet onion gravy. The sea bass was fine, with a good crispy skin, but the meatballs a tad disappointing in taste, though the skin-on chips were very good. There were a lot of happy faces around us and I liked the mix, families, sports boat pre-doughnut riders and quieter couples. It was busy but the food came quickly and there is plenty of room for people to spill out beyond the decks.

GEOFF HOLT
YJA YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2010
A ‘WHEELY’ GOOD SHOW This year saw the largest gathering of accessible vessels yet at the PSP Southampton Boat Show, with a total of five customised boats - two of which were making their debut at the Show.
WHEELYBOAT EVOLUTION
THE Wheelyboat Trust exhibited its new Coulam V20, Rivertime II on the Suzuki stand. The trust, which boasts 160 wheelchair accessible, flat-bottomed boats, located on rivers, reservoirs and lochs around the country, has created this, its first GRP version of its aluminium hull. Rivertime II is a coded vessel to 3 miles offshore and is accessed by a drop-down, landingcraft style ramp at the bow allowing wheelchair users flat access onto the
boat and also behind the steering console. Andy Beadsley, Chairman of the Trust comments: “This is the logical evolution of the Wheelyboat. It is a tried and tested model but we wanted something a bit bigger that could, weather permitting, allow users to venture further afield which will be of particular interest to our many disabled
anglers. She is powered by a Suzuki outboard and will comfortably reach speeds of 25 knots.” www.wheelyboats.org
ISLAND CHARITY CELEBRATES
At the other end of the spectrum, an Isle of Man charity which enables disabled people to sail took delivery of its brand new Beneteau Oceanis 48 at the start of the show and decided to exhibit the boat before she makes her maiden voyage to her home port of Douglas. Pride of Man III is a production yacht with some special design features that will enable a wide range of disabled people to enjoy big yacht sailing, and some, depending on ability, to get below decks to access cabins and heads on longer passages and cruises. For most wheelchair users, a transom mounted ramp enables access to the large cockpit, with a chairlift to get below from the cockpit to the saloon. Pride of Man III will operate throughout the year providing a variety of cruise options; from day sails to week-long cruises to Ireland and Scotland, with disabled members paying a modest £10 membership each year. All of the £250,000 to buy the boat was raised locally on the island by the charity’s volunteers.
The Stingray have been buidling handcrafted boats for over 35 years. The range starts from 18ft up to 25ft and includes bow riders, sports cuddies and cruiser models. Prices start from £19,055 inc VAT
Roger Clague, member of SFTD and delivery skipper of POM III explained: “Our charity is 30 years old this year so it was fitting we should celebrate with a new boat which will enable us to take even more disabled people on the island out to sea and for them to experience the freedom and enjoyment of sailing.” www.sftd-iom.com
MISS ISLE POPS BY
Completing the line-up of accessible boats was Dougal II, a flat-bottomed day boat used regularly by Cowes Sailability. Natasha Lambert, fresh from her Sea and Summit challenge attended with her adapted Miss Isle yacht and Wetwheels, my 9 metre Cheetah catamaran was on hand to take disabled guests to the show out for a spin around the buoys – over the 10 days of the show, Wetwheels took 280 people on the water, of whom nearly half were in wheelchairs. Well done to National Boat Shows for having such a truly diverse and inclusive collection of boats!

Sunken history
How shipwrecks are sparking our appetite for exploring the past…
In its first full year, the new Mary Rose Museum has already had over half a million visitors. Courtesy Mary Rose Museum
There has been an explosion of interest in what is lying on the seabed, often in the shallow and accessible waters just off our coasts. This new appetite for information has been fed by the story of henry VIII’s flagship. The Mary rose sank in 1545 with the loss of some 350 of her fighting compliment. Although the location of the Mary rose had been known since the mid-1800s, it was not until after WWII - when the basic concept of ‘frogmen’ rapidly developed into the populist sport of ‘sub-aqua’ - that wrecks such as the Mary rose could be easily and economically investigated. With Prince Charles taking a close interest, raising the remains of the Mary rose took on a new importance and, in October 1982, a steel frame was lowered into the water and then raised, bringing with it remains that had lain underwater for the previous 437 years. Work started immediately to preserve as much of the timberwork as possible and, in 2013, a purpose built £35 million museum opened, showing not just the remains of the hull, but many of its 25,000+ artefacts. In its first full year of opening, the Mary rose has already been seen by some 500,000 people, able to see at close quarters the lives led by her crew.

Diving to explore the wreck of the HMS London. Even when the Thames Estuary shows its sunny side, the tides are still strong and visibility on the seabed poor. Courtesy English Heritage
Locating the London But the remains of the Mary rose may be far from a unique find. Few of the many boats that today transit in and out of the Poole Swash Channel know that they are sailing over a hugely important wreck, believed to be from the early to mid1600s, of a 130ft long, 600 ton armed cargo vessel. Already the excitement over this find is being eclipsed by the news that in the Thames estuary, just off Southend Pier, local divers are busy exploring the remains of hMS London. Like the Mary rose, the London boasts a very strong royal connection, for in 1660, following the death of Oliver Cromwell, the ship had been sent to the Netherlands to bring Charles II back to england to regain the monarchy. Sadly, like the Mary rose, royal approval was not enough to save the London from an ignominious end, as in May 1665, after leaving Chatham Docks, the ship was blasted apart by an explosion in the gunpowder magazine. The location of the wreck of the London is rather problematic, with very poor visibility below the surface and strong currents. Yet there’s evidence that this site too could yield a rich haul of historical artefacts,
including those of female bones! (Despite the pleasures of Keira Knightley in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ladies on board were considered bad luck and they certainly did the London no favours!) Nor is our new interest in the history lying on the seabed merely confined to ships, proven by work on the Goodwin Sands to recover the almost-intact remains of a WWII Dornier Bomber. And other wrecks, including a seaplane that sunk near Pembroke Dock, are also attracting attention. Find out more For Free! With the profile of our marine history being raised in this way, it is little wonder that the University of Southampton, in conjunction with the Open University, has created a course titled Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds; Maritime Archaeology. The free course, which runs online, starts 6 October for four weeks, with four hours of study per week. AAS will be amongst the students! n www.maryrose.org n www.thelondonwreckproject.co.uk n www.futurelearn.com

are you wearing tHe rigHt underwear? The concept of ‘layering’ clothing - wearing a ‘base layer’ of thermal underwear to transfer moisture away from the skin, a thicker mid-layer for insulation and an outer waterproof to keep water out - is widespread. however, choosing a good performance base layer can confusing. Latest developments in fabric technology and garment design are moving forwards rapidly, to the benefit of sailors worldwide. A base layer is more than just thermal underwear for winter sailing. A modern base layer provides a comfortable environment next to the skin, regulates body temperature through moisture management and provides UV protection from the sun when worn on its own.
How tHermals work
Winter’s coming, time to wrap up! Tom Hussey, Research & Development Manager at Zhik, gives an expert insight into the very latest from the world of thermal base layers…
Synthetic fabrics tend to be hydrophobic (water-hating). The fibres cannot absorb moisture and are quick drying. Through the addition of a hydrophilic (water-loving) fibres and coatings, sweat is ‘wicked’ away from the skin to the fabric surface where it evaporates off, leaving you drier and more comfortable. Natural fibres, such as cotton, absorb moisture and are slow drying so provide a poor base layer.
A new generation of base layers – known as Super Thermals – offer superior moisture management, keeping you drier and warmer for longer.
Base layer cHoices
Traditionally, polypropylene garments were the main choice. These kept you warm whilst you worked, relying on body heat to mobilise moisture away from the skin. The downside of traditional polypropylene layers was the lingering odour, caused by natural bacteria trapped in the fibres. Polyester thermal fabrics introduced the concept of wicking in the late 1980s. Using hydrophilic treatments they enabled a certain amount of moisture transfer to wick to the fabric surface. Recently, Merino wool has gained popularity, as a warm, comfortable, natural fibre that does not smell with regular wear. however, being wool, if the weave is not a fine micron density, Merino can feel itchy and scratchy on the skin. This is why good quality Merino base layers come at a price. Merino ‘tanks’ moisture from the skin. effectively the wool fibres absorb moisture, known as tanking, keeping you feeling drier. While Merino has excellent moisture management abilities, during very extreme activity the fibres can become saturated, reducing its moisture management properties. Once wet, it is slower to dry than a synthetic. Merino’s key strength is its comfort over extended periods of wear, lending itself to long offshores or trips where physical activity is not so extreme.
introducing super tHermals
Super Thermals are the new breed of synthetic base layers, which are beginning to convert Merino lovers due to their superior moisture management ability. Super Thermals are a composite base layer combining hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers, creating a light, warm and very high moisture wicking material. When the Zhik R&D team set out to produce a top performing base layer, the Super Thermal concept was adopted. engineered with hydrophilic polyester and hydrophobic polypropylene, the fibres are constructed in 3D grid to promote higher levels of wicking. Designed for extreme variations, between heat generated through physical activity and cold environments, the fabric enables body temperature regulation, providing exceptional levels of moisture transfer and excellent insulation across a range of temperatures. www.zhik.com

MOB FOR MOTORBOATS
Masterclass

Are you prepared for a man overboard recovery? They say practice makes perfect, so here are a few RYA tips to try out, obviously using a fender and bucket arrangement instead of a real person!
Keeping the bow into the wind, take care not to run over the MOB.
Position the boat across the wind, upwind of the MOB. ■ Keep the boat lying directly across the wind and allow it to drift downwind towards the MOB. ■ Pick the MOB up on leeward side ■ The engine should be either in neutral or stopped.
Man overboard is covered in all RYA practical training courses. For more information, go to www.rya.org.uk Also, check out Keith Colwell’s RYA Sea Survival Handbook www.rya.org.uk/shop
MOB recovery methods
Lifting a person out of the water requires planning and practice. It is a difficult task, especially for short-handed crews.
seas this will be a dangerous place to attempt to recover a MOB, as the casualty is likely to be drawn under the stern of the boat and injured.
It’s essential to get the person out of the water as quickly as possible. In very calm conditions it may be possible to retrieve them using the bathing platform or the ladder at the transom. However, in rougher
How you go about the task will depend on how your boat is set up and how long the person has been in the water. Hypothermic casualties should be recovered in a horizontal position and handled with care.

Approach – Drift down method
Hopefully this is a scenario that you will never be faced with, but if the worst comes to the worst, it is absolutely vital that you feel calm and prepared and the only way you can achieve that is through practice.
AAS1205 Bucklers
■ Pick the MOB up on the helm’s side, so they can have a good view of the casualty for almost the whole approach. ■ Ensure your engine is either in neutral or stopped. ■ Use a throw line if unable to get close to a conscious MOB and pull them to the boat.
Keep clam and practice

The Williamson Turn
This manoeuvre is designed to turn the motorboat onto a reciprocal track. ■ Note the compass heading and add 60 degrees. ■ Turn to starboard on to the new course; note the amount of helm used. ■ When you reach the heading, turn the helm in the opposite direction at the same rate as before. ■ As you reach the reciprocal heading or you see your original track in the water, straighten the wheel. ■ Slow down and look for the MOB.

The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms.
Mini race, max impact Planning for a sustainable Mini Transat 2015
IT’S increasingly common these days for major events to include sustainability in their vision, operations and legacy, London 2012 having led the way. It’s also becomingly increasingly common for teams and competitors to consider where sustainability might fit within their campaigns, Team Origin’s ‘Race for Change’ being a great example of recent times. Becky Scott, Artemis Offshore Academy graduate, is doing just that as part of her two year campaign to qualify for the 2015 Mini Transat, and with a Masters in Environmental Management is well qualified to take on the challenge.
TOUGH CHALLENGE
The Mini Transat is one of the toughest solo yacht races in the world thanks to the combination of the small size of the boats (6.5m or 21ft), the distance (4,020 miles across the Atlantic) and the restrictions on the technology permitted on board. The race typically attracts over 80 boats to the start line and it has a real spirit of adventure, demanding both strength and endurance from competitors.
Left: Becky Scott, Artemis Offshore Graduate, is putting sustainability at the centre of her 2015 Mini Transat campaign.
For some time now, Becky has been exploring how possible it would be to take a more sustainable approach to racing without compromising either competitiveness or performance. In fact, she’s going a step further, also exploring how sustainability might even provide some marginal gains in terms of efficiency to be the lightest and fastest with the least waste, be that in time or resource. Becky is focusing her campaign on a number of key sustainability objectives; the campaign’s carbon footprint and in particular the dichotomy of sustainability versus time pressures to move the boat – by sea or by road – to get it where it needs to be to maximise training opportunities as well as preparation and maintenance. Other objectives include exploring new technologies and ideas; behavioural changes to reduce resource consumption and waste; data collection on marine wildlife to help support research and protection of marine species as well as observing the volumes and likely origination of marine litter during the crossing; and taking steps to minimise any pollution to the marine environment during the race, but particularly from
work done on the boat when out of the water. Small steps such as making lee cloths recycled from old sails, deploying refuelling devices to prevent spills when filling the outboard (although a switch to an electric outboard is definitely on the wish list), and using environmentally friendly cleaning products will all make a difference, but changes to the boat (within the class rules) will be important such as installing photovoltaic solar panels to generate the power required as it crosses the Atlantic. As well as focusing on the immediate impacts of the campaign, Becky hopes to inspire an interest
and commitment from other sailors to act more sustainably where possible. This also includes looking more widely to all those who will be involved in the campaign, especially working with sponsors, suppliers and partners to ensure they are playing their part by being committed to sustainable best practice in their own operations - and this is just one of the areas where The Green Blue will step in to lend a helping hand. www.beckyscottracing.com www.thegreenblue.org.uk

Watch out – thieves about!
Essential advice for protecting your outboard and other equipment
HOW TO KEEP THIEVES AT BAY We caught up with Mike Nightingale, Manager, Bishop Skinner Marine, to get his top tips on keeping the thieves at bay: Get the most adequate and appropriate lock for your motor - ensure the most secure and suitable anti-theft device boat is installed and fit more than one as the more obviously secure the engine is, it is less likely a thief will try to take it. New motors will generally come with a lock fitted to it but get a second one too. See if your local police force offers branded engine covers – some forces offer constabulary branded covers, fitted instead of the standard factory supplied cowling, that thieves would need to replace if they were going to sell it on the open market, drawing attention to themselves and arousing suspicion.
Spread the word if your motor is stolen - of course it will be impossible to stop all outboard motor theft and if you do find yourself the unfortunate victim of such a crime help others not fall foul of the same fate by making it as publically known as possible that thieves are operating locally and to increase vigilance.
How secure is your yard or compound – with daylight hours at a premium over the autumn and winter months, check your perimeter lighting is working, and why not consider locking gates a little bit earlier than you normally would? Does your recorded CCTV cover the areas most likely to be targeted by thieves?
Use common sense – you know will know better than most when something suspicious or out of the ordinary has occurred at your boatyard or sailing club. Don’t ignore your instincts - be observant, alert and report anything suspicious immediately to the police.
Security technology isn’t as expensive as you might think - motion-activated surveillance cameras (MASC) are very discrete and inexpensive to buy and install. These automatically photograph and/or record any movement. Wireless cameras have made surveillance possible in remote areas where it was not in the past. DID you know in January this year, on average one outboard motor was stolen a day? That’s according to joint insurance and police theft register www.stolenboats. org.uk With the days getting shorter and boats spending more time off the water, we are fast approaching the time of year when owners need to be especially vigilant.
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Encouragingly, boat insurance specialists, Bishop Skinner Marine, report that there has been a reduction in organised motor theft over the past 12 months. However, in 2013 outboard motor theft was amongst the top 10 marine insurance claims of the year and this still remains the case.
Make your engine unique – mark it with a few things that make sure it stands out, like a postcode or a club mark etc, and take photographs of the engine with the marks visible for police/ insurance company to use as reference should the engine get stolen. The more difficult you make it for a thief to sell your engine on, the better chance you have of them not going to the effort of stealing it.
Bishop Skinner Marine is the only insurance broker working in partnership with the RYA providing boat and travel insurance solutions for members. RYA members can enjoy a 10 per cent discount on boating insurance. www.rya.org.uk
With motor values ranging between £8- £15,000, no one can afford to rest on their laurels. Opportunist thieves continue to present a significant threat, and although the police are working hard to combat organised motor crime, there is no guarantee new gangs won’t emerge stealing motors to order, often to smuggle out of the UK. There is no one area in Britain where thefts are more common than another; this is a nationwide issue and the key is vigilance and protection for your outboard motors. Recovery rates of stolen motors are poor so prevention is definitely better than cure. Intent thieves will think nothing of breaking into secure buildings or compounds to remove outboard motors,
nor cutting the back of a boat away to remove its engine.
MAKING A CLAIM
There has been a reduction in organised motor theft over the past 12 months. However, in 2013 outboard motor theft was amongst the top 10 marine insurance claims...
What happens if you have taken preventative measures and the thieves still win? Recovery registers reveal only a very small number of engines are ever successfully found and returned to their owners. In probably the majority of cases a theft results in an insurance claim, and on this front, Mike Nightingale of Bishop Skinner Marine, has some advice. “A key exclusion on an insurance policy would be lack of security on an outboard motor,” he explains. “Most policies will require a secondary form of security to be fitted to the outboard motor. “Also another clause will be that the boat owner has a note of the serial
number of the outboard motor and has, in fact, passed it on to their insurer. The police will also require this information in the event of a motor theft. “The final point to bear in mind is that you might not get a new for old settlement on the claim following the theft of your outboard. A deduction will generally be made for wear and tear so check your policy wording.”
PROTECTING OTHER TARGETS
The website www.stolenboats.org.uk currently has almost 3,000 outboard motors registered as stolen. Outboard motors are targeted because they are designed to be detachable, making them relatively simple to remove. They are also high value items, which are expensive to acquire legitimately but that hold a high sell-on value, making them
extremely attractive to thieves. They might be bulky and heavy to move but the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to thieves being deterred from stealing them. But outboard motors are not the only the only maritime goodies thieves are after. According to www.stolenboats.org.uk speedboats, personal watercraft (PWCs) and RIBS are the next most popular things for thieves to target, with motorboats, sailing dinghies and tenders amongst the next group of most vulnerable items. Trailers, yachts and even narrowboats have been recorded as stolen too. The message? Never think it won’t happen to you. Follow this advice and try to make yourself as immune as possible. Conquering crime has to be a collaborative effort, so do your bit for yourself and others.

Typically the lake is flat and that suits me and Charlie. It’s a great feeling to win both championships.” Neil Holmes director of the Powerboat Training Academy who trained the boys said: “It’s a hard enough achievement to win a championship in one country, but to win it in two countries in the same season is phenomenal.” James and Charlie are now taking a well earned rest from racing but they plan to be back racing in the Powerboat P1 Superstock series in the UK and the USA again next year to defend their titles.

and clinched the UK title in Gosport earlier last month with a clean sweep of victories on a very flat, calm Solent in their GD Environmental Services race boat. The UK championship was not easy to win by any means with the top three teams – IFX Racing, Pertemps Network and GD - going into the finals in Gosport with only six points between them. They then flew across the pond and went into the final round of the USA series with a slender three point lead,
again at the top of the standings, and once again consistent performances in the four races over the weekend saw them extend that to six points to become double champions. STATESIDE VICTORY The battle for the USA national title was fought out on East Lake Toho in Florida and James knew that it would be a tense, exhilarating and possibly dramatic event: “This is one of my

EXPLORING BY SEA
SUTTON Harbour is an independent 5 Gold Anchor Marina located in Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City. Sutton Harbour offers sheltered berthing for up to 462 boats and first rate facilities for berth holders and visitors. Plymouth is an excellent sailing destination, with access to some of the finest sailing waters in the south west and miles of south west coast to explore. Sutton Harbour itself has a central sheltered location at the heart of Plymouth’s waterfront, which is easily reached both by sea and by land, with ample parking and excellent public transport links. Sutton Harbour is steeped in maritime history and has been the starting point for some of Britain’s greatest seafaring adventures. Visitors can see the Mayflower Steps, where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America and visit the Mayflower Museum to discover more about the military, naval and fishing past of the harbour, including Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the world on the Golden Hind. Combining historic charm with modern, contemporary design, the harbour is home to a wealth of restaurants, cafés, family attractions and shops. Sutton Harbour Marina operates a discount scheme with the Sutton Harbour Experience Card, which can be used at many of the eateries and outlets in and around the harbour. Berth holders are automatically issued with an Experience Card and visitors can sign up
for a card at the marina office to access exclusive discounts. In 2014 Sutton Harbour was host to the 45th edition of the prestigious international sailing event La Solitaire du Figaro, bringing some of the world’s best sailors to the city. The annual Sutton Harbour Classic Boat Rally takes place in July, and there are many more sailing events throughout the year. People choose Sutton Harbour Marina for its location, the quality of its facilities and the quality of service offered by marina staff. Feedback from both berth holders and visitors is consistently positive, and the marina has been recognised for the high standards of its facilities with the awarding of 5 Gold Anchor status from the Yacht Harbour Association. Sutton Harbour is part of the RYA Active Marina scheme, and runs practical and social events for berth holders throughout the year. Berth holders particularly enjoy the complimentary coffee and croissants on a Saturday morning, seasonal treats like mulled wine and hot cross buns, a great local event diary and the annual berth holders’ summer party. For visitors, Sutton Harbour offers a loyalty scheme where boaters staying six nights get the seventh night free; the nights need not be consecutive. The marina has a high rate of repeat visitors, who are always made to feel welcome by staff and local boat owners alike.
IN the local area there are a number of locations within easy reach for a day trip, with the Rivers Yealm and Tamar, Lyner and Cawsands all popular. There are many attractive weekend sailing destinations, including Brixham, Salcombe, Dartmouth and Torquay to the east in Devon, or heading west to Fowey and Falmouth in Cornwall. All of these towns and fishing villages have ample visitor moorings and plenty of shops, eateries and bars to explore while ashore. For a longer trip away, the Isles of Scilly are just 94nm distance. After arriving at the Harbour at St Mary’s, the largest of the islands, you can explore the smaller off-islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Martin’s and St Agnes before returning back to Plymouth. The Channel Islands and the French coast are also both within striking distance. Guernsey and Cherbourg in France are both 110nm away, and Brest 130nm.
GETTING ABOUT
SUTTON Harbour is within easy walking distance of all the local attractions as well as the shopping streets of Plymouth City Centre. For travel further afield, Plymouth has an extensive bus network with regular buses running to and from the Harbour. Cycle hire is also available from Rockets and Rascals located on the parade, and there are taxi pick up and drop off points around the Harbour.

thE marina in its current form was built when the 10,000 ton concrete lock chamber was sunk into place in April 1993. this created a depth of water to accommodate fishing boat movements and a large marina with the potential for a harbour that did not dry out at low tide. Since then, Sutton harbour holdings Plc has invested significantly to the tune of over £1m. In 2005/6 new toilet, shower and laundry facilities were installed, and the services and facilities are continually being expanded; for example, with new wet rooms. In 2006 the marina was

Plymouth and Sutton harbour have a fascinating naval history. on 22 August 1966 Sir Francis Chichester set sail from Sutton harbour on his boat the Gipsy moth IV to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe, returning to Plymouth on 28 may 1967. the Gipsy moth IV often returns to Plymouth to take part in the annual Sutton harbour Classic Boat Rally, held in July. one of the most popular attractions at Sutton harbour (and free to visit) is the mayflower Steps – the spot where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for North America in 1620. If you want to learn more, you can visit the mayflower museum which uses interactive graphic panels to explore tales of merchant families, the fishing industry, the military harbour and voyages to discover the New World. to see what the modern day fishing industry in Plymouth is like, tours can be arranged of the fish market, which is the second largest in England. CommENtS BoARD
“We’ve been berthing at Sutton Harbour for five years, and have never berthed anywhere else. The marina is very secure, particularly in respect of sea conditions. With the lock gate being so good, we never experience drastic bad weather conditions which is a great appeal of Sutton Harbour. The facilities at Sutton Harbour are second to none and the staff are so friendly which make staying on our boat an enjoyable time” mark and Jane Chapman, lady Rochelle
“Plymouth as a city is really great. Sutton Harbour is in a great location and position to explore, and there is plenty to do on and off the boat which is why we love being there. The National Marine Aquarium is a great day out, we would recommend someone who hasn’t been to Plymouth before to go there. The restaurants we like to go to are Quay 33 and Meze Grill. We also love to get an Indian takeaway from Jaipur Palace”
malcolm and Sebra Perry, little Blu, Newbridge Navigator
“We used to berth in Chichester but spent so much time in the south west it made more sense to berth our boat down here, so we moved to Sutton Harbour in July. The facilities are really great and there is so much to do off the boat, we are constantly entertained. The staff at the Harbour are all so friendly and helpful, it ticks all the boxes and we love coming down. For eating out we love Shirley Valentines Taverna restaurant and the Tudor Rose tea room. But nothing beats the amazing fish and chips to take back and eat on the boat!”

IN THE DRINK
One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.
BY PAUL ANTROBUS
Micro brew monopoly A look at some new breweries opening - but pubs continue to close
ACCORDING to CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale now in its 43rd year, new independent ‘micro’ breweries are opening apace while pubs continue to close down at 31 per week. CAMRA organises the annual Great British Beer Festival at Olympia, West London. This year’s show in featured 350 brewers and over 900 beers, lagers and ciders from across the globe. Ten or so were UK mainstream breweries with nationwide distribution, the rest small independent micro breweries serving a localised clientele. CAMRA says there are around 1,200 breweries and over 6,000 real ales in the UK alone. Two subjects dominated the festival bar chatter: excitement at the number of new breweries opening and concern about the pub closures. “At this rate,” said one, “there will be more breweries than pubs!” London now leads the breweries charge with 52 real ale brewers calling the capital their home, up from 44 last year, with Fuller’s of Chiswick the only mainstream brewer still in town. Good as London brews are, I picked out a couple of Hampshire breweries close to south coast sailing venues where we might find them…
HAVANT THE FOGGIEST
The Havant Brewery, founded in 2009, has grown from a one-barrel capacity plant into a 3.5 barrel plant (about 1,000 pints per brew) with distribution in pubs, clubs and shops around Havant, Hayling Island and Emsworth. Havant must be a strong contender for the ‘jokiest names for real ales’ prize. At Olympia I sampled ‘Havant the Foggiest’, a speciality beer made from wheat instead of barley and cloudy like a Belgian Witbier. Sharp and distinctive, a bit of an acquired taste.
Havant’s regular beers brewed the English way are ‘Havant Decided’, a 3.8 per cent traditional pale ale, ‘Havant Started’, copper brown and malty at four per cent, and ‘Havant Finished’, five per cent and rich mahogany brown and tasty.
BOAT SHOW ‘PUNTER’
The Upham brewery was also founded in 2009 at Stakes Farm, Upham (near Bishops Waltham, Hants) with a 3.5 barrel capacity, its own water bore hole and one pub, The Winning Post near Ascot. Now it has a 30-barrel plant (about 8,640 pints per brew), 250 local stockists and 11 countrystyle pubs from Ascot to The Navigator at Lower Swanwick, with plans to expand to 20. Their names follow a horse racing theme. There’s ‘Punter’, four per cent and brewed with only English hops as featured at The Parade drinks marquee during Cowes Week and at Upham’s own Punter Bar at last month’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. My sailing crew tasting panel had already
declared it a winner, distinctly hoppy and refreshing. “Pretty close to Fuller’s London Pride,” I suggested to Faye Pain, Upham’s trade marketing manager. “That’s fair and a compliment,” she told me, “exactly where we aim to be, right in the centre of the taste spectrum where most ale customers are.” ‘Tipster’, 3.6 per cent, is a golden summer ale and ‘Stakes’ is a premium 4.8 per cent ale - sounds horse racy but coincidentally is the name of their farmstead location. Save our pubs SO brewing is doing well. Now we need to ‘Save Our Pubs’. CAMRA is working on this. Go to www. camra.org.uk or www.pubsmatter.org.uk to find out what it’s doing and what we ‘punters’ can do to help by lobbying our MPs and, under the 2011 Localism Act, nominating pubs to be listed by your local council as an Asset of Community Value, giving a voice to local residents to explore options for saving it.
