Boat Show SailS to SaleS SucceSS With more than 109,000 visitors and impressive sales reports this year’s Southampton Boat Show was described a resounding success. the event opened with the British Sailing team, including Olympic medallists Giles Scott, Saskia Clark, hannah Mills and Nick Dempsey alongside actress Michelle Keegan. UK and international marine companies including Bavaria, Princess Yachts, Sunseeker international and Raymarine chose this year’s show as a platform
for more than 30 global boat and product launches. Eight others made their European debuts, with 82 UK debuts and 40 new boats and products being welcomed over the duration of the show. Murray Ellis, British Marine Boat Shows managing director, said: “Some serious business has been achieved across most product sectors. BRexit pRioRitieS FoR MaRiNe iNDuStRY MiNiStER for transport, John hayes MP, stressed the continued need to pursue an ambitious agenda for growth across the marine industry during a visit to the Southampton Boat Show. During the visit, Maritime UK members, including British Marine, outlined key priorities for the UK marine and maritime sectors in light of the decision to leave the EU. Speaking at the show the Minister said: “Britain has world-class marine industries which play an important role in our economy. “Shows like this are a key to supporting and increasing export growth and showcase the leading UK companies which are pushing the boundaries in innovation and emerging technologies.
“With Government and industry working together we can continue our proud history as a powerhouse of marine industries.” Maritime UK, in consultation with member organisations, has identified three key priorities in the Brexit discussions. they are: ensuring an attractive business environment, taking a global approach to global issues and championing British skills, services and goods. David Dingle CBE, Chairman of Maritime UK, said: “the maritime industry is the engine of British trade, supporting more than 500,000 jobs, contributing £22.2bn to UK GDP and driving exports and inward investment throughout the UK.
“in light of the decision to leave the EU, the UK must now, more than ever, capitalise on our global reputation as a world class maritime nation, embrace trade opportunities and deliver prosperity across the country.

UK BOAT BUILDERS FACE A SKILLS GAP
The Southampton Boat Show. Image: Bob Satchwell
WERE you one of the thousands who attend the Southampton Boat Show? With 109,000 visitors – a similar figure to last year - and great feedback from exhibitors and visitors, this year’s show was another great success. The new layout was welcomed and the tens of millions of pounds of business were certainly good for the marine industry in the wake of Brexit uncertainty. The show opened with the British Sailing Team, including Olympic medallists, Giles Scott, Saskia Clark, Hannah Mills and Nick Dempsey. Of course the Paralympians were over in Rio doing their best to match the success of the sailing team in the Olympic Games. The British Paralympian team performed incredibly well coming second in the medal table with 147 medals, 27 more than their London 2012 total. In sailing we had athletes in all three classes and came away with bronze medals for Helena Lucas and the SKUD duo Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell. It was perhaps a disappointing result for Helena as she had been leading for much of the week. You can read about their regatta on page 12. Taking place during the Southampton Boat Show and Paralympics was Bart’s Bash, which was focused on raising awareness of and funds for disabled sailing

following the removal of sailing from the next Paralympics. This event, despite being just a few years old, already has an incredible international impact bringing together sailors of all abilities from 58 countries. It helps to have the support of one of the world’s best-known sailors, Sir Ben Ainslie, who brought in a number of fellow America’s Cup sailors to this year’s event. Although there is a lot of boat show and Paralympic news to report this month, we have still been hunting out unusual stories for you. A couple of our favourites are the Solent fort being auctioned this month and the visit by Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards to Portsmouth Naval Base. If you come across any interesting boating stories send them in. Lastly we want to wish Jeanne Socrates the very best of luck as she sets off on her latest record attempt this month. She is already the oldest woman to sail solo non-stop unassisted around the world, but her latest challenge will see Jeanne, 74, attempt to become the oldest person to circumnavigate the globe. Jeanne will be at sea for seven to eight months, so will not be back until the spring. We caught up with her in the midst of her preparations, and you can read what she had to say on page 27. THE marine industry’s 4,500 businesses now employ 31,600 people but a significant skills gap has been highlighted. The industry says 30 per cent of companies have identified critical skills gaps with technical skills being the biggest obstacle to recruitment. For an industry where one in two jobs are in boat building and repairs and equipment manufacturing, the need to plug the skills gap is becoming more important for future growth. Although recruitment across the industry increased by 2.7 per cent in 2014/15 and is expected to increase a further two per cent in 2015/16, statistics released at the Southampton Boat Show demonstrate that an inability to recruit skilled workers is holding back growth. Other factors affecting growth include a lack of soft skills and competition from other industries. Howard Pridding, Chief Executive of British Marine, said: “The marine industry is dynamic and growing. We offer variety, good pay and opportunities to work at some world leading companies. “Businesses want to take on more staff but a lack of relevant skills is a barrier and while many of our members are taking on the challenge themselves, more can be done by government to back the industry. “We welcome the renewed emphasis on an industrial strategy but it is crucial that the marine sector forms a central part of any plan and is given the support it needs.” The UK marine industry is a haven for start-ups with over 50 new businesses registered in the last year. If these companies are to grow further, they need access to a suitably skilled workforce. Across the industry, businesses are taking on the skills gap by themselves, turning to apprenticeships or training up people in-house, rather than relying on talent from other markets or their competitors. Apprenticeships are important within the marine industry. This was demonstrated during the Southampton Boat Show when apprentices from eight British Marine companies were honoured. Sarah Dhanda, Director of Membership & Services at British Marine, said: “They are the workforce of the future
and it is wonderful to be able to recognise their hard work and dedication. “British Marine has been working with companies to support marine apprentices for a number of years to ensure that the industry, bringing £3.6 billion worth of turnover to the UK economy, addresses the skills gaps and continues to thrive.”
HIGH DEMAND FOR UK EXPERTISE ONE area that is performing particularly well is the UK superyacht industry, which is buoyant and growing, despite the uncertainty and financial volatility surrounding the EU referendum. British products, services and expertise continue to be in high demand from international markets, cementing the UK as a hub for the superyacht industry. The sector has recorded its highest levels of business confidence, with 75 per cent of companies positive about the next 12 months. With the majority of members reporting high levels of confidence post-referendum, this is in stark contrast to the sharp falls in business optimism recorded in August among British SMEs in non-marine industries. Peter Brown, of international superyacht services provider Burgess, and Chairman of Superyacht UK said: “With market dynamics strong, the superyacht sector is expected to continue to post positive revenue growth over the next 12 months. The decision to leave the EU is likely to dampen this growth, but the sector is showing confidence going into the end of the year. This is because we have less exposure to domestic economic risk and a depreciation in sterling has strengthened the purchasing power of our overseas buyers.”
SUNSEEKER BACK IN PROFIT SUNSEEKER International has revealed that it moved back in to profit in the second quarter of 2016 and has forecasted an overall profit for the full year. The business also announced a £50 million investment across new products, improved shipyard facilities and continued recruitment over five years. The investment in new model development is already reaping rewards with five new launches in 2016 including the 131 Yacht, 95 Yacht, Manhattan 52, 116 Yacht and Predator 68 MK II, securing over £220 million of orders at retail value. The multiple model launches are set to continue as part of a long term product plan that will see new model introductions over the next five years.

FROM PAGE ONE: More than 7,500 people, 362 clubs in 58 countries took part in this year’s Bart’s Bash. The mass participation and fundraising sailing event held in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation was a huge success, especially in terms of expanding the interest in disabled sailing and extending the unique event’s reach around the world. So far £75,000 has been raised with money still coming in. The decision to focus the 2016 event on raising awareness and funds for disabled sailing was taken following the removal of sailing from the Paralympics. Sailing is one of the few sports where those with disabilities can compete equally with their able-bodied peers. Richard Percy, CEO of the ASSF, said: “In the space of two days, we have witnessed international support from thousands of people. We have had Olympic sailors and America’s Cup
sailors competing against youngsters who have just learnt to sail and those who race on a regular basis at club level. “The event captures the imagination of people from inside and outside of the sailing world. “It raises awareness and funds for disabled sailing which we have seen being displayed at the highest levels at the Paralympics. “It is just a shame that it is being dropped. Hopefully this can be reconsidered for the next cycle, and in the meantime we can continue to keep opportunities available for those with disabilities.” Bart’s Bash was given an enormous boost with ‘show your support’ messages from high profile sailors showing support for their friend Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. Andrew tragically lost his life in a sailing accident whilst training in San Francisco Bay in 2013. More than 7,500 people took part this year, and they included members of the British Sailing Team, some just back from Rio and sporting Olympic medals. Giles Scott, Saskia Clark and Hannah Mills and Nick Dempsey were joined by Luke Patience and Dylan Fletcher, among others who were racing at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy where the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre is based. ASSF founding trustees include the America’s Cup sailors Sir Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy OBE who in turn brought on

board three America’s Cup teams in Bermuda - Artemis Racing, Oracle Team USA and SoftBank Team Japan - to join in the fun and the fundraising. Iain said: “Bart was extremely passionate about the power that sailing has and that it should be accessible for all. It is a travesty that the Paralympics is dropping sailing after Rio 2016 so we have placed Bart’s Bash on the last two days of the Paralympic Games. “It really is a call for the worldwide sailing community to get together and help “raise funds for disabled and Paralympic sailing in the future.” Funding and Development Manager for the ASSF and Bart’s Bash Event Organiser Tim Anderton said: “We want to support these clubs by providing
training and equipment, and by subsidising the costs of coaching for schools who attend sailing sessions at venues who have the right kit and volunteers. We want to work with sailing providers to start to overcome some of the barriers that exist and to increase the availability of sailing for those with disabilities. “We also want to work with national organisations to ensure there is a good training programme in place to allow people to progress into racing and hopefully into future Paralympic Games when sailing is reintroduced.” Next year’s Bart’s Bash will take place on 16 and 17 September. Turn to page 12 for our review of the Paralympic regatta.
sealine’s ‘Flylounge’ THE latest flybridge yacht by Sealine, the F530, is the largest yet by the luxury boat-builder. “We wanted to go bigger and better, so we created this sleek ‘flylounge’ yacht,” said Andrea Zambonini, product manager at HanseGroup, which owns Sealine. “We wanted to create a home away from home that would appeal to families and people who want to be able to use it at any time. “The flybridge is like a large terrace
and in the main deck we have lots of glass and optional doors which make the boat enjoyable all year round.” Sealine’s F530 is available with Volvo Penta’s 8-litre diesel engine and three propulsion system options. It has a top speed of 31 knots and is also equipped with Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control, along with a 16-inch Glass Cockpit System screen that enables the operator to customise navigation and control layouts.

Great comeback for ben’s boys LAnd Rover BAR came back from a poor start at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup world series event in Toulon to finish third. The team did not get the start they had hoped for in Toulon. After last place finishes in the first two races the final race win on the saturday pivoted on a bold tactical split at the end of leg two, when the team broke from the leading pair and took the right-hand side of the race course. The anticipated wind shift quickly changed the field of play to BAR’s advantage, and they took a lead that they held to the finish – despite some hard pressing from the French. Going into super sunday Land Rover BAR were in fifth place, but with the points close there was still all to sail for on the final day of racing. The Land Rover BAR crew proved themselves rock steady under immense pressure. sir Ben Ainslie and his team scored a brilliant wire-to-wire win in the second

race. However they were forced to make remarkable recoveries – to finish third and fourth – after pre-start penalties in the other two races of the day. More significantly, both of the teams chasing them in the series, oRACLe TeAM UsA and emirates Team new Zealand, were lower in the weekend’s rankings. sir Ben Ainslie said: “All credit to the team, it was a big improvement on yesterday and it needed to be for those double points on the sunday. It was a good day for racing, a better breeze than yesterday. we would have liked to have got closer to winning – I think Artemis sailed really well – but to increase our lead in the world series going into the final event in Japan in november is a big deal for our team.” Lane Rover BAR lead the series by 14 points going into the final event of 2016 at Fukuoka from 18 – 20 november. Cowes Harbour Commission has finalised the design for phases two and three of the outer Harbour Project, the eastern Channel dredge and shrape breakwater extension. The decisions follow consultation with the project partners, Harbour Advisory Committee and harbour users. The eastern Channel will be increased to 42m minimum width and moved eastwards the breakwater. It will be straightened and extended southwards, parallel to the new HCA marina and Inner Fairway to provide a secondary small boat channel. Following consultation with Natural england, CHC is now applying to vary the existing dredge consents for the next phases of harbour works. Detailed negotiations are continuing with project partners the Homes and Communities Agency and the HCA’s development partners Camper & Nicholson and westcourt Real estate, with a view to commencing the dredging works and construction of the shrape extension in January 2017. DAME ELLEN MAKES ‘SENSE’ AT SHOW
THE new Beneteau Sense 57, which made its UK debut at the Southampton Boat Show, was christened by Dame Ellen MacArthur, on the opening day of the show. Ellen is best known for having held the record as the fastest solo circumnavigator of the globe and founding the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which takes young people in recovery from cancer sailing to rebuild their confidence. The new Sense 57 is the latest in Beneteau’s Sense range. The unique deck plan has the cabins
located to the bow so that the cockpit can be set lower. This means that the Sense 57 sits lower on the water, giving it sleek lines. On the water price £459,454. Also during the show the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust received the keys to a specially adapted Oceanis 45. It will enable the Trust to better support young people from the North of England and Scotland, particularly those with mobility issues resulting from their cancer treatment. With advice from Beneteau, Ancasta and Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair the boat was carefully selected, purchased and modified to support the requirements of the Trust’s young people. Dame Ellen said: “It has been a big day for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, it is a step that would not have been possible without the massive support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the Ancasta Group and Beneteau, so a huge thank you.” www.ancasta.com/boats-for-sale/newboats/ beneteau-sail/sense/57

BRITANNIA’S RECORD ATTEMPT DELAYED AFTER missing the Southampton Boat Show Team Britannia’s record attempt has been delayed until next year. It is a British project to design and build an 80ft eco-powerboat to break the current 23,000 mile round the world powerboat record. The team had hoped to launch at the Southampton Boat Show with the record attempt beginning this month, but problems in the construction process mean this is no longer possible. There was a technical problem with its two stern hull plates, which need to be recut. Alistair Thompson, Managing Director, said: We always knew this was possible, after all we are building a revolutionary boat, the first in its class.” The challenge is being led by ocean adventurer Alan Priddy who said of the setback: “This is a hard day for the project and everyone involved with it - more than 100 men and women. I have been living and breathing this project for five years and we were flying. The boat was taking shape and everything was on track for the start later this month. “All the kit and equipment we needed is on site waiting to be installed, including the engines, Castoldi jets and high tech communications and navigation equipment from Raymarine. “We will be able to fly the flag in more places, visiting the London Boat Show and other major industry events around Europe.” The final crew, which includes a number of
wounded and injured veterans, has been selected. In September they started a training programme and completed their RYA Powerboat Level 2 before doing sea survival. Alistair remains confident the team can beat the record of 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes held by Kiwi Pete Bethune, “I am supremely confident we will be bringing back the record to the UK.” While no firm date has been set, Alan Priddy and his team are talking to meteorologist Steph Ball. A preliminary analysis of the weather data indicates that the next window for the record attempt will be early next year, starting from Europa Point in Gibraltar.

Unique assets such as this appeal to buyers with creative vision and we are expecting worldwide interest.” Horse Sands Fort is one of the largest of four forts in the Solent, completed in 1880 as a military base to protect Portsmouth against the French. They were never needed for their intended use and thus became known as ‘Palmerston’s Follies’ after the prime minister who authorised their construction. Horse Sands Fort was armed during
the first and second world wars, then declared surplus to requirements by the Ministry of Defence in the 1960s. Two of the other forts, No Man’s Fort and Spitbank, are now luxury hotels while St Helens is privately owned. Horse Sands Fort lies south east of Portsmouth in the middle of the Solent, approximately 15 minutes by boat from Gunwharf Quays. Robustly built from
concrete and granite, the fort comprises two floors and a basement and has a circular road along the inner perimeter, affectionately known as ‘the Street’. LOVERS of boats and the past can become a part of the Mayflower’s history. The public will be able to see their names etched into history when plans to build a multi-millionpound robot boat to mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower out of Plymouth take another step forward this month. The team behind the Mayflower Autonomous Ship are planning a crowdfunding launch which will offer, among other rewards, the chance to put individual names on the side of the ship. For £20 you can put your name on the boat, for £50 you can put your family’s name on it and for £35 you can put two names and a significant date.

The F2.5B - The smartest portable outboard
The boat will be the 21st century version of the Mayflower and be able to sail without crew from Plymouth to Plymouth, USA in 2020 on the 400th anniversary of the first sailing. The MAS will be the first vessel of its kind to sail without captain or crew across the Atlantic and be able to conduct scientific research around the world. It will be solar powered, with cutting edge battery and renewable energy capture, travelling to inhospitable parts of the world to conduct scientific research and collect data. Onboard there will be unmanned aerial vehicles plus life rafts so that it can respond to a distress call from other mariners, and be first on the scene and render assistance. With driverless cars already on the horizon and the air industry using computers to fly planes, MAS could lead the way to changing the way the shipping industry works. But in order to get the design from blueprint to boatyard, organisers need to raise £300,000 for the next design and development stage, which will include robust wave tank scale-model testing. www.mayflowerautoship.com

Honda RYA Youth RIB Champions 2016 have been crowned. Following a summer of competitive area finals and a national final that proved to be a real nail biter, it was victory for Jamie Paterson, 12, from Findhorn Marina, Scotland and Kamila Czartolomna, 15, from South Staffs Sailing Club, Midlands who powered through to win. Both winners skillfully manoeuvred a tricky and testing course including a slalom, stopping and reversing around a mark and a blast to the finish line at the Southampton Boat Show. Kamila said: “Amazing, I cannot believe I have won for a second time. Conditions were windy and with big waves which made it quite tricky out on the water. I am looking forward to coming back for the Champion of Champions next year.”
Presenting the prizes at this year’s event was Top Gear’s Rory Reid who was joined by Steve Morris from Honda UK and Steve Harrison from Highfield. Jamie wins a Honwave T40 RIB with a BF20 engine for his club, while Kamila wins a Highfield 460 RIB with a Honda BF50 engine. After the prize-giving it was back on the water for Kamila as she took on 13-year-old George Baxter representing Girton Sailing Club for the perpetual Champion of Clubs trophy. PARALYMPIANS BOW OUT ON A HIGH IN RIO
Six British sailors across the three Paralympic sailing classes were bidding to achieve ParalympicsGB’s best ever sailing medal return. Rio lived up to its reputation as one of the hardest places in the world to sail during August’s Olympic Games. With the breeze affected by the mountains and cityscape around Rio combined with a tricky tide and current, the Paralympic sailors also needed to prove their adaptability in all conditions. Rio was sailing’s last Paralympic showing for at least eight years, as it is not currently in the Paralympic
programme for Tokyo 2020. However moves are underway to get sailing re-instated for the 2024 Paralympics. British Sailing Team manager Stephen Park said: “Sailing is a sport for all. I am very much hoping that World Sailing will be able to put together a very strong case to the International Paralympic Committee to see sailing included in the Paralympic programme for 2024. If those discussions go well over the next couple of years then maybe the IPC will look to bring sailing back into Tokyo 2020 as a demonstration sport.”
Image: Richard Langdon / British Sailing Team
After Britain topped the sailing medal table at the Olympics the Paralympic sailors were hoping to achieve a similar success when the final Paralympic sailing regatta got underway in Rio. BRONZE FOR HELENA
Helena Lucas won bronze in the 2.4mR. Image: Richard Langdon/British Sailing Team
After topping the one-person 2.4mR class podium four years ago, Helena Lucas became the first British Paralympic gold medallist since sailing became a full programme sport at Sydney 2000. As the only female in the 2012 2.4mR fleet, she also became the class’ first female Paralympic medallist and champion. Helena was the first British athlete, Olympic or Paralympic, to be selected for Rio 2016 and went into her third Paralympics having added three more World Championship medals since her London triumph. Helena, who was born with no thumbs and limited extension in her arms, described winning gold at her home Games as “the ultimate pinnacle” of her career but had another gold firmly in her sights in Rio. Ahead of the Games Helena said: “What drives me and inspires me is the chance of winning another gold medal and defending my title, which at the moment is something no Paralympic sailor has managed to do.” Helena got her title defence off to the best possible start as a first and second
from the opening two races of the event handed her the early overall lead. After day three Helena was still holding on to the top spot despite a tough day that she compared to being in a “washing machine” on the Sugarloaf course. However it remained tight at the top and Helena could not hide her disappointment at not being able to defend her title having gone into the final race of the event leading overall, only to end the race in 15th place. Damien Seguin (FRA) sailed to gold while Matt Bugg (AUS) took silver. After crossing the line, Helena discovered that her boat speed had been hindered by a plastic bag, which had got caught on her rudder. Helena said: “It was an absolute fight in the mix, I could not break out or break free no matter what I did. I kept thinking I was doing the right thing and getting the shifts right but I did not have the speed I have had all week because I was towing a bag.”
SKUD BRONZE

Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell were attending their third Games and were looking to better their London 2012 bronze medal.
Sonar’s John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Stephen Thomas. Image: Richard Langdon/British Sailing Team
Their regatta got off to a good start picking up a fourth and third, following a successful race two protest against the Polish World Champion pair Monika Gibes and Piotr Cichocki, to lay in fourth. What looked like it was going to be a brilliant third day for the SKUD duo ended up tinged with disappointment as, having picked up second and first place finishes from their opening two races, they were forced to sit race three out altogether after a problem with their jib sheet. They remained in silver medal position, though, and after some tough races during the week the Brits entered the final day still in with a shout for silver. They were trailing the Canadian duo John McRoberts and Jackie Gay by a single point while Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch (AUS) had wrapped up gold with two races to spare.
In a battle around the racetrack in the last race of their regatta, where the positions were changing throughout, McRoberts and Gay ultimately sailed over the line third, four seconds ahead of the Brits in fourth. The Canadians took the silver medal while Alexandra and Niki took home the bronze medal. Alexandra said: “It was close to being silver but John and Jackie sailed a fabulous regatta and they really deserved that medal. We are just elated. It is great to be able to come away with another medal.”
SONAR TRIO
The Sonar crew of John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas were taking part in their fourth Games. They were looking to bounce back from a tricky first day as 11th and ninth place finishes saw them end the day in
11th position. By day three, as the Brits put the disappointment of a tough start to their event firmly to bed, they led from start to finish in each of their three races. Most importantly their dominance lifted them to within two points of the medal positions, after being 12th going into the day’s racing. However this was followed by a disqualification from Thursday’s opening race which dented their hopes and dropped them down the leaderboard to eighth. The trio went into the final day of racing knowing a medal was beyond their reach and finished the event ninth. John admitted that, although disappointed not have secured the Paralympic silverware that has eluded them at their fourth Games, they did have some standout moments to be proud of. John said: “It was good to finish on a high note, it just shows what we can do. The Wednesday when we got the three bullets was pretty awesome.”
TARGET ACHIEVED
Alexandra and Niki’s medal, along with Helena Lucas’ bronze, means that although they did not better their London 2012 result the British Sailing Team achieved its pre-Rio target of two medals. Stephen Park said: “We have won four medals at the past two Games and a number of world titles over the past 10 years too and they really have done Paralympic sailing in Britain proud. They really should be very proud of their achievements.” www.rya.org.uk/Rio2016

The new idle-charge feature provides up to 48 per cent more battery charging at idle speed to support the greater power demands of today’s sophisticated marine electronics and accessories. This means boaters can safely stay out on the water longer. As a member of the powerful Pro XS family, the new engine delivers benefits including ease of maintenance and protection against corrosion with Mercury’s ultra-low copper content alloys that help create an outboard built to withstand the elements. Barrus also showcased Active Trim at the Southampton Boat Show. This is an automatic engine trimming system designed to make boating easier for both novice and experienced boaters. Manual trim operation becomes obsolete as Active Trim senses changes in speed and rPM to improve performance, fuel economy and ease of operation. This is a gradual transition which levels out at
full speed and can offer a fuel saving of up to 40 per cent. Active Trim’s intuitive, hands free system allows further concentration on the water to increase boating safety and offers a smoother ride with less propulsion. www.barrus.co.uk
Yamaha’s baby portable is now even more stylish and userfriendly with a new look and engineering advances. The makers say that by fine-tuning the designs of the piston, cylinder, cylinder head and intake manifold, the engine’s combustion efficiency and fuel economy have been improved, giving better all-round performance and lower exhaust emissions, along with lower noise and vibration levels. on the F2.5 the driver has a large twist-controlled throttle to get a comfortable grip on – as seen on Yamaha’s larger portables – while the new easy-grip starter handle, precisefeeling gearshift lever and choke control are all within easy reach. The built-in fuel tank – which saves space in the boat and makes transport and rigging easy – is now see-through, making it simple to keep an eye on the fuel level. oil too, is easily checked using the observation window and the new combined filler cap and dipstick. The latest design also has the oil Leak Free Storage System, allowing the motor to be stored in three positions, on either side or on the front, without risk of oil spillage. www.yamaha-motor.eu
SUzUKI has added two highspecification, high-performance four-stroke outboards, the dF175AP and dF150AP, to its range. They use the company’s total engine control technologies to provide both power and performance and fuel efficiency. They have utilised a Counter Balancer System and Thrust Mount System to achieve smooth engine operation, an air intake resonator to ensure exceptionally quiet operation and Suzuki’s pioneering offset drive shaft to move the outboard’s centre of gravity forward, improve balance and reduce vibration on the transom whilst contributing to the outboard’s overall compactness. The Keyless Start System uses a coded key-fob to transmit an access code to the engine’s starting system. The system makes for an excellent theft deterrent, as the outboard will not start without the proper access code. In addition to this, the key-fob floats so it can be retrieved should it ever go overboard. Both outboards feature new 3d decals and are available in Pearl nebular Black - Suzuki’s new premium black finish - or the modern Cool White. www.suzuki-marine.co.uk

Sail away on an adventure of a lifetime in this inspirational, charming and funny BBC Four TV series. When actor Timothy Spall was facing a lifethreatening illness, he promised himself that if he survived, he would take up sailing. The result is a collection of three travelogues, four episodes apiece, of his adventures. Somewhere at Sea follows Timothy and his wife Shane as they navigate around the coast of Britain in a specially built sea-going barge, The Princess Matilda. From Fowey in Cornwall, to Lands End and then onto South Wales, the couple meet local characters and experience the day-today adventures of life at sea along the way. Timothy and Shane continued their miniodyssey circumnavigating the British Isles in their floating home in Back at Sea which sees the couple setting off from Cardiff, heading around the coast to Liverpool, across the Irish Sea to Belfast via the Isle of Man, and through the Caledonian Canal to the east coast of Scotland. The final part of the trilogy, All at Sea, is released on DVD on 7 November. This sees the couple sail around Rattray Head in Scotland, all the way down the North Sea coast, to their final journey up the Thames into London. We have two sets of Timothy’s DVDs to giveaway. GREEN FOCUS
WATER MATTERS
There has been a lot of media attention on microbeads and the effect that these have on our marine environment. Dan Reading, Green Blue Sustainability Officer
F
irstly, some of you might be asking what microbeads are and why you have not seen any. Essentially they are small (less than 1mm) pieces of plastic that are used for a wide variety of things from medical treatments, which is what they were originally used for, to cosmetics. This subject is worth thinking about as a number of boaters use showers on their boats and the majority of craft are not fitted with grey water holding tanks or with anything to treat the water before it is pumped into the environment. Of course it is possible to fit your boat with a filter for your grey water. Wavestream, a company who make inline bilge filters, have also developed a grey water filter system called Wavebright. If you have one of these fitted you can be assured the water going out into the environment is not causing any harm.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
Microbeads, being plastic, do not biodegrade and therefore can build up in the food chain and the chemicals that are in the plastics and absorbed by them can end up in our food chain. Other pollutants in grey water can be nitrates that cause eutrophication and algal blooms.
Microbeads do not biodegrade and so can build up in the food chain. Image: MPCA
Most of us who bathe at home will be connected to the mains foul sewerage network and therefore various cosmetic products and cleaners can be used with the knowledge that your waste water will be treated - most of the time. The treatment at a waste water plant normally consists of removal of large objects that may block or damage equipment through filtration. The next stage is to separate matter using settlement tanks. Some treatment works also treat the water with aeration tanks where the water is aerated and certain ‘good’ bacteria is mixed in.
Finally the wastewater is passed through a last settlement tank, and then in some works it is slowly filtered through a bed of sand, which acts as a final filter and catches any remaining particles. The treated wastewater is then directed into a river or the ocean. Of course when you put items in the toilet to be disposed of sometimes they do not make it to the treatment works. This is because some water companies operate something called combined sewage overflows. Essentially these are used where sewage and storm drains share the same pipes and during heavy rainfall the CSOs discharge to the river/sea to prevent sewage backing up into our homes and streets when the system is full. Take a walk along the beach in Hamble and it is immediately obvious how many plastic items there are that look very out of place. I say out of place but these days finding cotton bud sticks and plastic sanitary items is fairly common. It is important that things like cotton buds with plastic shafts never be disposed of in the toilet.
microbeads and it is estimated that around 10 per cent remain suspended and still end up entering the marine environment. This problem is all around us. By trawling the water using a very fine mesh net, researchers have found that even in the Solent there are microbeads. For those of us that have showers on our boats or have a sink that drains to the waterway it is worth thinking about what is being pumped out. Using chemicals such as bleach and other cleaning products when you do not have a holding tank can be harmful to aquatic life but also to other people who use the water such as dinghy sailors. Always think about what products you use on your boat. Remember that your sink and shower waste water will probably not be treated as it would if you were using it on shore. If you want to know if your body washes contain microbeads look for nylon, polypropylene terephthalate, polyethylene or polymethylmethacrylate or download an app to your phone called ‘beat the microbead’ which tells you if a product has microbeads in it by scanning a barcode. To find out more about the work of The Green Blue visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk

FIRST AID COmPANION
Sandra Roberts, author of First Aid Companion, looks at why all sailors need to ‘be prepared’ when they are on the water and what steps they can take to be able to deal with medical situations should they arise. Contents of commercial kits may vary, but all will contain basic dressings. Most will have a manufacturer’s expiry date and will be sterile up to that point as long as packaging is not damaged. However first aid is not about using a sterile dressing or applying it in a certain way. Everyday items can be used to achieve the fundamentals of care. Wet wipes are useful for wound cleaning. Sanitary towels or even babies nappies can be used to supplement wound dressings if extra padding or absorbency is needed.
TRAINING COURSES
W
hen sailing everyone expects to enjoy the trip without mishaps. Unfortunately accidents and illness do happen and everyone on board should know how to deal with these. Whether it is a leisurely sail in sunny weather on a summer weekend, or a more challenging adventure farther afield, the golden rule is ‘be prepared’. First aid is defined as helping behaviours and initial care provided for an acute illness or injury. It can be initiated by anyone in any situation including self-care, with the objectives being to preserve life, prevent further harm and promote recovery. Knowing how to manage a casualty while getting
Knowing exactly what basic first aid kit is on board and how to use it will be included in any training course, but training will also enable you to manage an incident and not just an injured individual. help and awaiting its arrival should be a vital part of training for any sailor. Undertaking a first aid course should be a part of every yachtsman’s basic preparation for sailing, as well as survival, fire and radio training. All of these are readily available from a number of organisations. It is also highly recommended to keep a first aid book on board for reference to complement this practical instruction (but should not be used as a replacement for this vital training).
KITTED OUT
First aid kits are essential on board your boat. Many types are available to buy as complete packages or they may be put together using individual items, which allows the kit to be tailored to specific needs. Any kit needs to be easy to identify, waterproof and readily accessible. Next month All at Sea will be looking at casualty assessment
“If you are prepared, then you are able to feel confident” Robert J. Ringer Dealing with the immediate injury is only part of caring for the casualty. Continuing that care on board, or preparing the casualty for evacuation, whether by helicopter or transfer to rescue launch, is also integral to first aid management. Training also includes the management of acute illnesses such as seizure, chest pain or asthma attack, as well as conditions which arise from environmental effects such as sunburn and hypothermia.
mEDICATION
On short trips it is sensible to carry some basic over the counter medicines which, like first aid kits, should be in a waterproof container and importantly, just as in the home, not accessible by children, in order to prevent any accidental ingestion.
First aid kits are available as complete packages or they may be put together using individual items
On longer trips other medicines such as antibiotics and strong painkillers may be required in an emergency. Many companies that offer a supply service to yachts will be able to advise on what medicines are appropriate for the trip. This advice will take into consideration the size of the vessel, the location and duration of the trip itself and the number of people on board, as well as any medical conditions they may have. If anyone on board is taking regular medication it is important to make sure they have enough to last the trip. A good habit to get into when travelling is to take a few days extra supply of any regular prescription in case you get delayed.
KNOWN CONDITIONS
If someone on board has a known medical condition, everyone else should be trained to recognise and manage the situation if they become ill. For example, know how to identify that a diabetic has low blood sugar and how to give them sugar before their condition worsens and they become unconscious. Recognising a problem early enough makes it easier to treat. If someone has a known allergy and needs to carry an auto injector such as an Epipen™ make sure everyone knows how to use it if the casualty becomes incapable of administering it themselves. More advanced medical training is available, as is bespoke training to suit the needs of those on board.
BE PREPARED
Commercially available first aid training prepares individuals to manage major problems such as a casualty who has stopped breathing or is unconscious. In reality most first aid required on board will be of a minor nature, but one should always be prepared to deal with something more serious. Sadly serious illness and injury do happen at sea unexpectedly which is why it is wise to keep skills updated. Undertaking a first aid course should not be a one-off event. Most certificates issued on completion of these courses will have an expiry date with the expectation that the training will be repeated. It is well documented that skill fade is rapid if tasks are not undertaken on a regular basis and in first aid this would, for example, be carrying out resuscitation. Next month we will be looking at casualty assessment. Sandra Roberts is a senior lecturer at Warsash Maritime and Superyacht Academy, Southampton Solent University, teaching medical and first aid subjects to seafarers. She is a registered nurse with over 40 years’ experience gained in a wide variety of settings including 18 within the maritime and yachting world.
First Aid Companion is a concise and handy reference guide covering all the key topics surrounding first aid afloat. Subjects range from casualty assessment, choking and bleeding to fractures, spinal injury and seizures. Splash-proof and ring bound, the 24-page practical companion is the perfect addition to your cockpit; great for topping up your first aid knowledge, it also serves as a brilliant aide-memoire at the point of an emergency, should you ever find yourself in one. Starting next month All At Sea will be featuring chapters from First Aid Companion to give you an insight into the world of first aid afloat. The book contains all the topics to be featured, plus more, and although it should not be seen as a replacement for completing a first aid course, it could really help to make the difference if you find yourself in a potentially harmful or life-threatening situation at sea.

HOLdING BACk THE TIdE The continuing success of Bosham Sailing Club’s Classic Boat Revival illustrates sailors’ enduring love of classic small boat sailing. The cornerstone of the Classic Boat Revival has to be the growing fleet of classic National 18s
Solent based dinghy sailor david Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.
Bosham Sailing Club is a family based club and RYA Training Centre at Bosham Quay in Chichester Harbour, West Sussex
A
ccording to the best of the history books, as near as can be established, 1,000 years ago King Canute might well have stood on the shoreline at Bosham in West Sussex, facing the incoming tide. What the history books cannot agree on is what Canute was trying to prove. Was he demonstrating the limits of power for a mere earthly King, or was he trying to exercise some kind of willpower over the elements. Either way, in modern parlance, he got a ‘bootie’ – his shoes full of water. Certainly Canute might well have been visiting Bosham, for by 1086, when the Domesday Book was completed, Bosham was recorded as one of the wealthiest manors in the whole of the country. In later years the charming Saxon Church is believed to be not only the
burial location of one of Canute’s daughters, who had drowned in the famous Bosham mill-stream, but also of King Harold, who had been killed at the Battle of Hastings. FIRST SAILING CLUBS Fast-forward across the centuries to the start of the 20th century and leisure sailing in small boats was just becoming established as a popular pastime in the UK. With the 3,700 hectares of sheltered waters of Chichester Harbour on the doorstep the area was a magnet for small boat enthusiasts, with the first of the many sailing and yacht clubs that would soon ring the area being established on Bosham Quay in 1907. From the outset, Bosham Sailing Club would enjoy the benefits of its charmed location. With the clubhouse located in the old mill building,
with an outdoor terrace that enjoys commanding views over the quay and waters of the Bosham Channel, there can be few sailing clubs with such a picturesque location. Bosham Sailing Club are happy to share the view with the National Trust owned green and with the backdrop of the church and period houses, a vista that brings as many people to the quay to take in the view as to go sailing. Yet for all this history, Bosham Sailing Club have shown that far from trying to hold back the tides of change that are sweeping through sailing, they will be embracing it avidly to the benefit of the club members and the sport in general. Having won Lottery funding, the club set about modernising and improving their changing room facilities. At the same time, having recognised that sailing is hungry work, the club have upgraded their culinary capabilities resulting in food that is now as good as the sailing. CLASSIC BOAT REVIVAL You might expect that such a forwardlooking club will be riding the wave of the so-called ‘new’ dinghies and, indeed, these are very much in evidence. But,
at the same time, Bosham Sailing Club are continuing to cement their claim to be running their Classic Boat Revival weekend as the best event for classic dinghies and dayboats to be enjoyed anywhere around our shores. The cornerstone of this event has to be the growing fleet of classic National 18s, with Bosham proving to be almost the spiritual home for these large, graceful dinghies. For the crews wanting the classic good looks of the National 18 but a size smaller, Bosham is also host to a very active fleet of Yachting World Dayboats that consistently deliver highly competitive racing. With the club holding such an enlightened view towards supporting classic small boat sailing, it is hardly a surprise that a number of other superb classic dinghies can be found belying their age by racing hard out in the harbour. The recent running of the Classic Boat Revival brought all of the above aspects to the fore. On the Saturday, when the rain poured and strong winds lashed the South Coast, the elderly dinghies were still out and racing hard. On the Sunday, when the breezes were gentle and the sun shone, the combination of
classic boats in a classic setting could hardly have been bettered. After a day afloat that can best be described as ‘full on’ it was back to the quay for what was yet another classic, this time in terms of an afternoon tea, complete with a whole range of locally made cakes. BUCkING THE TRENd At a time when both sailing clubs and classes are facing a stiff challenge to prevent a loss of numbers, the continued growth in success for Bosham Sailing Club and their Classic Boat Revival is a timely reminder that there is far more to small boat sailing than just the high speed ‘crash and burn’ style. Most of all, the Bosham Revival has shown that far from holding back the tides of development, that they are reversing that most worrying of trends by encouraging the ‘fun factor when afloat’ to return. With plans already being discussed for the 2017 Classic Boat Revival, this is another phenomena that cannot be held back and is to be celebrated as such. Go for it Bosham, All at Sea will be back with you in 2017.
Sailors still love classic small boat sailing

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
LONG DISTANCE SAILING pREpARATION ANDY WILLETT Of STELLA mARIS YACHTING ExpLAINS HOW TO pROpERLY pREpARE fOR A LONG DISTANCE SAILING TRIp.
THe current interest in long distance sailing shows no sign of slowing down as many owners, crews, couples and families give up their jobs to buy a comfortable boat, usually 40ft plus, and make plans to head off across the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal and round the rest of the world. The significant numbers of yachts setting off from the UK is demonstrated by rallies like the ARC, which heads to St Lucia for Christmas, and even more ambitious round the world rallies such as Oyster’s World Rally, which leaves Antigua in January 2017. YACHT OVERHAULS Fully refitted yachts tend to suffer less breakdowns over the next couple of years. Stella Maris Yachting, the yacht refit, restoration and ‘whole-life’ support company, has given many yachts complete overhauls before they embark on long distance voyages. It is important for owners to be closely involved with the work, while subsequent sailing trials with owners and their families provide a thorough operational checkthrough of all the functions on the boat.
Andy Willett of Stella Maris Yachting explained the typical scenario: “Many of the owners who are planning extensive sailing trips have only just bought their yachts. “The acquisition is often the result of a lifetime dream, and the yachts are often second hand, although often only a few years old. Despite this there can be faults, some obvious and some not so obvious, so it is advisable to get the whole yacht stripped back and inspected.”
“Here is the important bit. In a boatyard like ours the owner gets to work alongside the shipwrights and is encouraged to help service and fix each part of the boat. That way, when the boat comes out of the shed and goes back into the water, the owner has already had ‘training’ in each of the areas of the boat. These can range from engine and generator maintenance, rig diagnosis and repairs, plumbing and water supply, electrics, electronics and so on.
The Oyster World Rally is a 27,000 mile circumnavigation beginning in January
Many yachts receive a complete overhaul before embarking on long trips
SETBACKS AT SEA “Suffering breakdowns and equipment failures mid-ocean or in a far-flung Pacific archipelago where there are no services can be extremely inconvenient and put the sailing schedule back by weeks. “It is extremely expensive to get spare parts, or even engineers and other experts to come to remote places, so if you can fix things yourself, and your gear is all in good and recently serviced condition, it is going to save a whole lot of time and money.”
It is not just ocean globetrotters that can benefit by being present in the yard while their yachts are being refitted and restored. It is a great experience for owners of yachts of all sizes to learn more about their yacht providing, of course, they have time to get away from the office. BoAtING people JEANNE SOCRATES, 74, THE OLDEST WOMAN TO SAIL SOLO NON-STOP AROUND THE WORLD.
When did you first start sailing?
I started dinghy sailing and windsurfing in 1990, at 48-years-old. I did a competent crew course in 1994, which got me into yachting, although I kept on with some dinghy sailing and windsurfing in particular.
What made you decide to sail around the world on your own?
My boat, Nereida, was in Bonaire in the Caribbean when my husband died of cancer in 2003. I decided to ship the boat from Florida to Vancouver, Canada for a rally in 2004 with other boat friends. So I sailed from Bonaire to Florida via Colombia, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. Then after cruising up and down between Alaska and Mexico for a few years, it seemed the natural thing to do to continue cruising around the world, as my friends were already doing.
All AT SeA AUGUST 2012
So I decided to leave from Mexico, starting in March 2008 and returning in June 2009, sailing westabout through the tropics and Panama Canal. However I lost my boat halfway through the final leg 60 miles short of completion. So in June this year, in Mexico, I sailed down to Acapulco to complete the final leg of that circumnavigation to Zihuatanejo.
Your latest challenge, starting this month, is to become the oldest person to circumnavigate the globe. What do you expect the biggest challenges to be?
In 2012-13 you became the first woman to sail solo non-stop around the world from North America and the oldest woman to sail solo non-stop around the world. How did you feel when you successfully arrived back on land?
You will be at sea for seven to eight months. What will you miss most?
Fixing things that will almost certainly break while on passage so I can keep the boat going and complete it non-stop.
Fresh salads and fresh bread. I will be in email contact and on the radio almost every day talking to people, so I will not miss out on contact and I will play music often.
27
You are part of a short list of women to have circumnavigated singlehandedly. What advice would you give today’s younger female sailors?
Just go for it and enjoy the sailing and the feeling of achievement and confidence it gives you. Be prepared to have to fix things – it is often not so difficult with the right tools and manuals.
Which sailors inspired you?
Isabelle Autissier, Ellen MacArthur and the Vendee Globe sailors got me thinking about trying for a nonstop round the world trip.
Is there anything else you would like to share with All at Sea’s readers?
Age is irrelevant, as is your sex. Do not let either get in your way. Health is far more relevant, along with a willingness to learn and not give up trying too easily.
*In the 1968-69 Golden Globe Bernard Moitessier give up the chance to win the first non-stop singlehanded round the world race and kept on sailing halfway around the world again to Tahiti to “save his soul”.
On a high! Although I had not really wanted to stop – I felt like ‘doing a Moitessier*’. It was good to realise I had finally managed the non-stop round the world challenge.
What does it feel like to be in the Guinness Book of Records for your achievement?
It is fun to be able to show the grandkids my entry, but otherwise it feels a bit irrelevant since it was a personal challenge. However it was good to be able to raise money for a good cause, Marie Curie Cancer Care.
What is your favourite memory from the thousands of miles you have sailed?
Magnificent, wandering albatrosses skimming the enormous swell of the southern ocean, thousands of miles from anywhere, often with a spectacular sunset.

youth riB ChaMPionS
The 2015 eight to 12 years age group winners
As Britain’s leading programme for introducing kids to powerboats and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is celebrating its 15th anniversary. Emma Slater, RYA PR & Press Officer
Max Mawer was crowned 2015 national Honda RYA Youth RIB champion in the 13 - 16 years age group
F
irst created in 2000 by RYA Powerboat Projects Manager and Event Director Andrew Norton to offer children a fun, safe and enjoyable way of honing essential skills the championship, sponsored by Honda and Highfield, has gone on to be a huge success. “We created the programme to encourage clubs to train young people at an early age with the aim that they could go on to help with essential club roles from laying courses to helping with safety boat cover. We had no idea it would develop to be the programme it is today.
“The idea of a competition was to introduce the thrill of racing and provide youngsters with a reason to improve and practice their RIB driving skills. If you start training them from eight-years-old, children are more receptive and develop key skills earlier. We came up with a really simple course containing elements of the RYA Powerboat Level 1, but being against the clock made it fun and exciting.” With around 400 children participating in its first year, by 2016 the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship had more than 5,000 drivers competing in club heats and regional finals, with 29 youngsters across both age categories in the national final.
Where are they noW?
But it is not just about the winning. Andrew believes that the long term value of the championship can be seen in the success of many Honda RYA Youth RIB graduates: “Many of the kids who compete in the championship go on to contribute hugely to their clubs as volunteers and in many other ways, which is fantastic to see. Some have gone on to become instructors, work on superyachts and even become lifeboat crew. A number of previous competitors have achieved significant success in powerboat racing, including former champions Jordan Muckles and Steve
Curtis. Having claimed the Honda Youth RIB National title in 2007, Jordan has gone on to become one of the foremost young powerboat racers in the UK. In recent years Jordan has racked up a succession of national and world titles in various disciplines, including the 2013 GT30 British Championship. He now races in Formula 4 whilst training as an electrical apprentice, and hopes to be able to pursue racing full-time in the future. “I am lucky to be where I am now. If it was not for my experiences with events such as the Honda RYA Youth RIB competition, I would not be competing in international events. “Racing powerboats has taught me responsibility and maturity, and everything I have done has come from it. I would never have seen myself where I am now, but being involved in powerboating has given me a great platform in every respect. “ Fellow former champion Steve Curtis now dedicates his time to helping the stars of the future perfect their powerboating skills. Having started powerboating aged just six at Paxton Lakes, Steve has since dedicated much time and effort to coaching youngsters in the Eastern region. “I started at Paxton Lakes when I was about six. We went for a drive and it felt really good and natural. From there I just kept practicing and doing courses. If I had never done it, I would not have met so many friends or visited so many places – it has done wonders for me.
“Last year one of our kids made the national final, which shows how far we have come. The Eastern regional final was held at Grafham this year, which is something I am really proud of making happen.”
Looking to the Future
So has the championship changed in the past 15 years? Andrew Norton explained: “The competition and ethos of Honda Youth RIB has not changed but we have made some developments over the years.” In 2013 a brand new trophy was introduced to keep the competition fresh and give even more youngsters the chance of winning one of the fantastic prizes: a Honwave T40 RIB with a Honda BF20 and a Highfield 460 RIB with a Honda BF50. Andrew said: “The Champion of Clubs trophy is contested after the national final with the newly crowned winner taking on the previous champion in a head-to-head showdown. “There has also been a huge increase in the amount of girls we see taking part and winning which is fantastic. Looking to the future we hope to continue to see even more clubs and young people taking part and benefiting from the skills that Honda Youth RIB can provide.” Special thanks to sponsors Honda and Highfield. MARINA CHAT
Mark and Susan are loving the sailing life
MEETING BOATERS AROUND THE UK’S MARINAS
Quay to success Retired GP and berth holder at Falmouth Marina Mark Gripper has only been sailing for four years but he is adopting a fast-track approach to finding his feet. Spurred on by a good friend and sailing mentor, Mark now sails his 2005 Hunter Legend 33 single-handed. We discovered what drives him as a sailor and why he believes Falmouth is ‘one of the best places’ to keep and sail a boat in the UK. IN THE BEGINNING My biggest challenge as a sailor has been learning to sail from scratch. In
2012 I did a Day Skipper theory course and had a day out with a training skipper before taking delivery of my new boat Pisces 2. I also went out a few times with friends who were relatively experienced sailors. They were a little alarmed at my going so large for a first boat, but I pointed out that at my age, I did not really have time to work up to it. After about six outings I was reasonably proficient in getting in and out of the marina and then learned to sail by trial and error in local waters. My wife, Susan, and I have a berth outside the tidal sill at the marina which means we are unrestricted by time and tide – a great luxury.
become a good friend and sailing mentor and we often sail our boats together across Falmouth Bay and east to the Dodman. Our boats sit side-by-side in adjacent berths, like two peas in a pod.
NEw fRIENDSHIpS I did wonder whether fellow sailors would be toffs in blazers and cravats, but most of the marina berth holders are down-to-earth folk. I was very fortunate in making the acquaintance of a neighbour in the marina who had an identical boat and years of sailing experience as an oyster fisherman. A youthful 81-year-old Aubrey has

SAIlING HIGHlIGHTS I live about five miles from Falmouth Marina, and being retired I have frequent opportunities to take advantage of any fair sailing days. Falmouth must be one of the best sailing locations in the UK. Sailing down to Helford River for a picnic lunch is an endlessly repeatable experience and Fowey and Salcombe are also attractive cruising destinations. I consider myself exceptionally lucky to be able to sail here and hope I will enjoy good health long enough to have many more years of enjoyable sailing. This week, for the first time, I sailed with a pod of dolphins. They were in a shoal of mackerel about three miles out to sea. It was a warm day and they were very playful, swimming beside the boat and diving underneath for about 10 minutes. I have never had this experience before despite having sailed about 3,000 miles over the last four years. www.premiermarinas.com

The Sunday Times Golden Globe Race was a non-stop, single-handed, roundthe-world yacht race, held in 1968–1969, and was the first round-the-world yacht race. 31 October 1968 was the last day on which racers could start. The last two competitors, Donald Crowhurst and Alex Carozzo, set off on this day. However Robin Knox-Johnston was the only finisher out of nine entrants and was awarded both the Golden Globe trophy and the £5,000 prize for fastest time.

S
wansea is Wales’ Waterfront City. It sits on the sandy fivemile stretch of Swansea Bay beach and is a great base for exploring the best of SouthWest Wales. The area is well known for its connections to Dylan Thomas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who owns a house at Mumbles. However there is much more to Swansea, which has the largest covered daily market in Wales and is home to Ospreys Rugby Club.
DOCK DEVELOPMENT
The dock area is seeing major development with the SA1 Waterfront zone developing a mix of commercial and residential units. Swansea Marina is located behind the Swansea barrage at the mouth of the River Tawe. The marina is council run, locked and central to town. There are further moorings at the Yacht Club, a friendly place with a good bar and restaurant looking over the river to the new development of SA1. There is a small barrage here as this waterway, the Bristol Channel, sees the second highest rise and fall in the world, I am reliably told by Uain in the marina office. There are fantastic plans to build a tidal lagoon, creating energy from the tides. According to Project Tidal Lagoon: “The Severn Estuary holds the second highest tidal range in the world and within this Swansea Bay benefits from an average tidal range during spring tides of 8.5m. The construction of a tidal lagoon to harness this natural resource would help the UK transition a low carbon future with greater energy security and lower electricity costs, while providing regenerative economic and recreational benefits to the local community. Our vision is to pioneer a largescale source of indigenous, low carbon electricity that is both affordable and sustainable long-term.”
■ SA1 - Quay Three: Deli/ bar. Try the potato and kale cake with poached egg ■ In the market - Thai Taste ■ Mumbles - The Woodman at Blackpill ■ Mumbles - Verdi’s: For cyclists and hikers. Sit on the Knuckle by the slip and enjoy one of Joe’s ice creams ■ Redroses - Sporting Chance: Try the mixed grill ... 36ozs of meat ■ Bike routes - National cycle routes 4 and 43 run through Swansea, as does Sustrans Celtic Trial: www.sustrans.org. uk/wales/route/celtic-trail
Swansea, on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales, is a great family friendly holiday destination. There is so much to do in the area - from exploring the fishing village of Mumbles, to visiting museums such as the National Waterfront Museum and the Dylan Thomas Centre.
IN SEARCH OF FOOD
Swansea’s main drag of restaurants is on Wind Street, with popular franchised pubs and value eateries. There are some independents tucked away round the edges and Coffee Bar Cinema looks well worth a visit, but reliable favourites, such as Five Guys, will keep the teens happy. The stylish Sail Bridge draws you over the water to the iconic buildings at SA1, passing the Dylan Thomas museum, aiming for the brick chimney and the crowds spilling out of popular bars. There is also the Thai Elephant restaurant, convivial TwoCann and La Parilla, in the attractive old J Shed, sister to La Braseria, on Wind Street. I head back to Mama Mia, though, as I cannot resist a good, family run Italian, and they have lemon polpetto with parmesan on the menu. The whole area of Wind Street has a dusty Ramblas feel to it, with quiet groups wandering around, but it is not over busy. The indoor market is busy. Fresh fish flap, cockles chatter and I have to try laverbread, an important traditional food. I am not sure why they use the word bread to describe this green gloop. A national delicacy made from seaweed, it is washed and then cooked to a soft greenish black paste. It is rich in minerals and vitamins, full of protein and low in calories. I also grab a bag of sugar dusted Welsh cakes hot off the slow griddle – and this is more like it. They are wonderful, a great price and many of the stalls sell them, all looking fresh and fragrant. I reckon there is still time for a proper breakfast before I head off to Saundersfoot, so I cross that floaty bridge again to see what SA1 is like in the morning and follow a group into Garbo’s. There is no one playing a piano, or singing, but there is a reliable, good value full Welsh coming out of the kitchen, so why not join them?
The market has some tasty treats

Owned and operated by Premier Marinas, the steel, one man operated dredger, named Doris, will allow Premier to undertake extra dredging works to complement Brighton’s annual dredging programme.
Premier Marinas Maintenance Manager, Russell Asser said: “Deploying our own dredger enables us to carry out dredging more frequently and in a way that is less disruptive to the day to day operations at the marina. The new dredger features a unique extendable arm that can dredge below and between bridgeheads, pontoons and fingers, reducing the need to remove pontoon fingers and reinstate berths after a dredging campaign.”

HISTORICAL WHITEHAVEN In the 1650s Whitehaven was the third largest port in England. Not many sea port’s around the UK have such a story of high and lows. The port mainly exported coal and salt to Ireland. By the eighteenth century Whitehaven was importing tobacco from Virginia and imported sugar, spirits and spices from the West Indies. This trade made the town of Whitehaven wealthy as the sea captains of these early traders built grand houses with their wages and commissions. The port of Whitehaven declined when its chief
designer and engineer moved away to then the little known harbour of Liverpool on the River Mersey where he set out to design the port that remains today. Gerard Richardson MBE, famed for his contribution to the Whitehaven Festival, and historian Ivor Nicholas have given a talk to the Whitehaven bertholders on the history of this seafaring town. If you would like information on the history of the Port of Whitehaven get in touch with Whitehaven Marina. www.whitehavenmarina.co.uk

CARE FOR YOUR RIB
Ensuring that your boat and engine are well cared for and regularly maintained could save you frustrating periods off the water or a lot of unforeseen expense. The RYA chatted with the experts at Honda Marine for their top tips.
THE rclass Maste
Flush the motor with fresh water after every use or as frequently as possible
recommendations. Good practice is to regularly grease any moving components and ensure the power head is regularly sprayed with either WD40 or Duck Oil.
TRAILER
It is important to regularly check the hull for cracks or damage
HULL
Wash tubes (sponsons) and hull inside and out after every use with fresh water. This will inhibit the build up of salt deposits and avoid corrosive damage. Also be careful with sun creams on PVC and Hypalon tubes as they will damage the material. Carry a pack of wet wipes onboard to clean hands after applying sun cream so as not to mark the tubes with your hands. Antifoul the hull if it will spend extensive time on a mooring. Proper antifouling will extend the life of the
hull and improve fuel efficiency. Care and attention must be paid when antifouling an aluminum hull so check manufacturers’ recommendations and use the correct primer and antifoul. Do not use a copper based antifoul on an aluminum hull. Regularly check the hull for cracks or damage. A GRP hull will, over time, suffer damage to the gel coat and this should be patched up with a correct colour match gel in order to maintain the UV protective element of the gel coat.
Gel coat is not waterproof but actually a permeable membrane which water crosses freely. GRP is waterproof but suffers badly when exposed to the harmful effects of UV exposure.
ENGINE
Flush the motor with fresh water after every use or as frequently as possible. Saltwater deposits can build up quickly within a motor’s cooling system and will restrict the waterways and engine running if allowed to accumulate. Follow the engine manufacturers’ maintenance
Be sure to wash the trailer with fresh water after launching in saltwater environments. This is even more important for braked trailers. If you have had a long journey to the launch site try and allow some time for a trailer’s hubs to cool before launching. This will reduce the risk of damage to the hubs from sudden immersion in cold water.
EQUIPMENT
Too often essential equipment and maintenance can be overlooked, so ensure the correct amount of lifejackets are onboard and that each one has been inspected or serviced by a competent person. Cylinders should be in date and firmly screwed in place and when possible a lifejacket should by orally inflated and have all its seams inspected. It is good
practice to do this at regular intervals so you better understand your equipment. When storing your RIB a purpose made cover is a good investment. A tarpaulin will not fit correctly and gradually wear the tubes or scratch a Perspex windscreen as it is blown around in windy weather. A purpose made cover will protect the tubes and the glued seams from the harmful UV rays and keep dirt and leaves out of the boat. Always store a boat with the bung out and the bow slightly higher than the stern. Even with a cover on condensation will collect inside the vessel and must be allowed to drain out. Also store with any seat boxes open, bow locker open and if the console has a hatch leave it open. As much airflow around these areas as possible is essential and particularly in a marine environment to stop mould spores taking hold inside these areas. CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT Last year Lizzy Foreman took part in the Mini Transat and hopes to race in the Vendee Globe one day. In this series the experienced racer takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the challenge these men and women face. This month Lizzy discusses campaign management.
such as time, funding and deliverables as well as people, to ensure that the campaign objectives are met. Typically there are five methodologies that can be used to manage a project, depending on the outcome. These are termed waterfall, scrum, critical chain/ path, prism and prince 2.
‘‘A goal without a plan is just a wish’’ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
EVERY sailing campaign has an objective – whether to win a national championship, cross the Atlantic or to simply improve the skill set of the crew. However, as ‘a goal without a plan is just a wish’, it is best to ensure that you have a sound management plan in place
to ensure success. Depending on the type of campaign, it may be the coach, skipper, boat captain or someone outside of the sailing crew who will act as the project manager. Possessing certain qualities the project manager will be able to deal with numerous constraints,
A successful campaign requires a sound management plan
I adapted the prince 2 method to manage my two-year Mini Transat campaign. This method involves five stages: initiation, planning, production/ execution, monitoring/controlling and closing. The table shows how I adapted each stage to my campaign. Following this method, I was able to remain focused on the ‘big picture’ while not forgetting all the smaller details along the way. This method also ensured that both my sponsors and I were aware of our
objectives from the very beginning, with a plan in place to achieve them As always in the sport of sailing, ‘communication is key to success’. Lizzyracing.com

I
t has been a good summer season for the popularity of rosé wines, noticeably so for regatta parties and al fresco dining. The choice and quality are much improved since a decade ago and at its best rosé is an elegant and fruity wine that has both responded to and fuelled the growth in demand. But it does not have to stop just because the nights are drawing in. I bring news of a new rosé port from the Offley winery in the Douro region in north Portugal, a great way to extend the rosé genre into the winter and the Christmas period as a gift or with the Christmas pud. Offley suggests it is also an excellent apéritif served on the rocks or as a cocktail with tonic, ice and lemon in a long drink glass. Offley was founded in 1737 in London by William Offley soon after a trading agreement between England and Portugal, resulting in several Port Lodges being created by English entrepreneurs. Significant expansion for Offley began after Joseph Forrester joined the company in 1830,
WELSH WINNER
The UK produces Scotch whisky, English whisky and Bushmills Whiskey from Northern Ireland but less well known is that Wales also has its own whisky. Penderyn Distillery, the first Welsh distillery for 100 years, launched Penderyn single malt Welsh Whisky on St David’s Day 2004 in the presence of Prince Charles. The distillery is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons due north of Cardiff and produces several whiskies. The one we tasted with an impromptu group of Scotch experts was the Madeira, distilled in copper pot still, matured in bourbon barrels, then finished in rich Madeira wine casks. Bottled at premium strength 46 per cent, this

single malt whisky is smooth, light in character and softly sweet with a golden green colour. It is distinctly not Scotch but as a drink of identity it works pretty well. renamed as Offley Forrester. Although there had been a Portuguese Royal Charter in 1756 defining the Douro as the official Denominação de Origem Contralada for all port wine, Forrester was the first to chart the Douro river and valley, a feat that earned him recognition and access to the influential geographical societies of the day. Today, Offley is a major producer with a comprehensive range of traditional ports, ruby, tawny with some 10 or 20-year-old versions, and even a white port. The Offley Porto Rosé is a recent addition to the range and aimed at combining the freshness and delicacy of rosé wine and the distinctive robustness we expect of a quality port. The start of the process of making rosé wine involves cold fermentation. Then fermentation is stopped by the addition of distilled wine alcohol or brandy to create a fortified wine, bottled at 19.5 per cent abv. The result is light pink, soft on the palette with a fine bouquet of tropical fruits and exotic wood. Anyone who has been involved with building or restoring a wooden boat will recognise that. I found it at Waitrose for £11.99 for 75cl.
