THE America’s Cup continues to make headlines. Earlier in the year most of the teams competing in this year’s regatta signed a framework agreement that would cover the next two editions, the 36th and 37th America’s Cup, planned for 2019 and 2021 respectively. As well as a two-yearly cycle, foiling catamarans would continue to be used. At the time Jimmy Spithill, the skipper of two-time winner Oracle Team USA, said: “This announcement will go down as one of the defining moments in America’s Cup history. It is great for fans, athletes and commercially – a win win for everyone.” As is required, the framework agreement upheld all aspects of the Deed of Gift, the document that lies at the heart of the America’s Cup. There was one problem. The framework did not have the backing of Emirates Team New Zealand who said: “Emirates Team NZ believe the future America’s Cup format is to be decided by the Defender and Challenger of Record as it has historically been.” As we now know, this was the team that went on to win the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda this summer. It soon became clear many of the decisions made in the framework agreement were not going to be carried forward to the 36th America’s Cup. Since then the boating world has been waiting with, until now, bits and pieces of information coming through. Last month it was confirmed there would be a return to monohulls and tighter nationality rules. Then the Protocol of the 36th America’s Cup was released at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in New Zealand after negotiations between the Defender and the Challenger of Record Circolo della Vela Sicilia, whose team will be Luna Rossa. After the announcement Patrizio Bertelli, the boss of Italian syndicate Luna Rossa, said: “The original values of the Cup have been restored.” Luna Rossa pulled out of the last America’s Cup after additonal rules changes were introduced.

When the protocol was released Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton said: “From the moment we won we have felt a responsibility to release this document as soon as possible to provide the required details that potential teams can now base a challenge on.” “The plans are coming together nicely – we shall have a very exciting boat that will be fast and powerful. We are pushing the boundaries of what is possible technically and this will test the designers, boat builders and the sailors to the limit. Just what the America’s Cup is all about.” The America’s Cup Match will be raced in March 2021, preceded by The Prada Cup in January and February 2021. Boats are set to arrive from 2019 with pre regattas held that year and in 2020, culminating with a Christmas regatta in December 2020. The dates and venue of both the America’s Cup Match and The PRADA Cup will be announced by 31 August 2018. Grant Dalton also confirmed that Team

New Zealand will not take part in the America’s Cup Challenger series, the Prada Cup. The intended venue is Auckland, New Zealand but if it cannot be held there it will go to Italy. Dalton reiterated that the event will feature 75 foot monohulls. The last time monohulls were raced was the 32nd edition in 2007. Currently there is a team of designers, led by Emirates Team New Zealand Design Coordinator Dan Bernasconi, working on various monohull concepts. There is a desire to have a spectacular monohull yacht that will be exciting to match race, but also one that the public and sailors can relate to as a sail boat that really challenges a full crew of professional yachtsman around the race track. Each competitor is permitted to build two boats, the hulls of which must be laminated in the country of the competitor. The first boat is not permitted to be launched prior to 31 March 2019, the second

Autumn beach visitors have been warned to look out for a bizarre stinging creature, the Portuguese man o’ war, by the Marine Conservation Society. This is the second consecutive year they have turned up in numbers. People are advised not to touch the creatures as the tentacle-like polyps can give an agonising and potentially lethal sting. LIVELY RESTORATION Lively Lady has been moved to Hayling Island, where work to restore the iconic yacht will begin ahead of next year’s 50th anniversary celebrations marking Sir Alec Rose’s roundthe-world voyage. After being gifted to Portsmouth City Council by Sir Alec the boat is now leased to the charity Around and Around, which was founded by offshore sailor Alan Priddy.

The final rule for the new boat will not be published until 31 March next year, but Land Rover BAR say there are strong hints that the boat will foil like the multihulls used in the last Cup. “We are comfortable with the transition, the key people in our sailing, design, engineering and support teams all have a great deal of relevant experience.” said Team Principal, Ben Ainslie. “With the rule not coming out until March, we hope that it will be a collaborative approach to its development with all stakeholders included.” Lastly, there will be nationality rules where 20 percent of sailors must be from one country. The rest of each sailing team must meet strict criteria of residents of 380 days in the country from 1 Sep 2018 to 1 Sep 2020. In response to this rule Sir Ben Ainslie said: “Land Rover BAR has always had a British identity and this rule will not affect us. It is good to see that the World Series will continue in 2019, and we look forward to returning to America’s Cup racing in the new class. “The Cup has gained a lot of new fans and it was encouraging to hear both the Defender and Challenger of Record’s commitment to delivering the same high standard of global, televisual racing to cement the interest in our sport.” Sir Ben concluded:“The America’s Cup is the hardest trophy to win in world sport, and it is likely that we will be traveling half-way around the world to compete on the home waters of the world’s most successful modern America’s Cup team. THE America’s Cup continues to make headlines. Although earlier in the year almost all the teams competing in this year’s regatta signed a framework agreement that would cover the next two editions, the framework did not have the backing of the eventual winners, Emirates Team New Zealand. It soon became clear many of the decisions made in the framework agreement were not going to be carried forward to the 36th America’s Cup. Since then the world has been waiting with, until now, bits and pieces of information coming through. At the end of September Team New Zealand officially announced the new America’s Cup protocol. With the return to monohulls, it was announced that the AC75 Class of boat would be a 75ft high performance monohull governed by the AC75 Class Rule. An increased, and welcomed by many, emphasis has also been placed on the rules around the nationality of the sailing crews when racing. While the America’s Cup might be a step too far for most of us it really is never too late to take up sailing, as you will discover on page 20. Whether you want to sail in your local area or cross oceans, with the correct training and experience there is a whole world on the water waiting for you. In this month’s special feature we found out how one determined couple got into sailing and fell totally in love with it. A great way to gain experience, and something our couple did, is to take a sailing holiday. There are so many options available when it comes

to assistance or training on your boat that it is easy to find the right destination and level of help to suit your skill level. As well as great get-away ideas, this month’s holiday page includes an up-date following the devastating hurricanes that hit the Caribbean in September. If you already have a holiday booked it is recommended you get in touch with your provider if you have not already done so. Many of these islands rely heavily on tourism and so they will be welcoming visitors back with open arms as soon as possible. In fact not all Caribbean islands were badly affected and many will continue operating as normal so do not ignore this beautiful part of the world when planning future trips. It pays to always be safe when on the water as one reader discovered. The largest piece is 3/4 inch plywood about four feet long and two feet wide. There are only five pieces shown here, but I could have filled the boat up with the other pieces flowing out of the river. FOUR young British sailors crossed the virtual finish line off John O’Groats to establish a new Length of Britain record of two days, 14 hours and six minutes. It marks the second record held by the British Vendee2020Vision team who, in 2014, took the World Record for Monohulls 60 feet and less for Round Britain and Ireland. Launched in 2016, Vendee2020Vision is an initiative to nurture Britains’ Offshore sailing talent along the path to success in yacht racing’s most challenging event - the Vendée Globe, the quadrennial singlehanded non-stop round the world race. Daniel Steel, Chief Executive of Sail Scotland, who developed and organised the challenge, said: “We are delighted to crown the Vendee2020Vision team as the new Length of Britain Record Holders. They have shown incredible skill and endurance, taking on the weather and tidal conditions to not only reach the north coast of Scotland in a world record time, but to smash it by over 21 hours.”

The crew, Mikey Ferguson, Lizzy Foreman, Andrew Baker and Jack Trigger, witnessed every kind of condition you could expect, from over 40 knots and a confused sea state to battling against the clock with no wind at the finish. Speaking straight after crossing the finish line, skipper Mikey Ferguson said: “We are really excited to establish this new record time. wind instruments. I have sailed around the UK three times but this passage has been the hardest to date. The team faced a technical issue on day two after the mainsail car bungy broke and the vertical wand which supplies the instruments with wind data was damaged. The crew pulled into open water in Belfast Lock so they could continue sailing and complete repairs without having to stop the record attempt. The wind instruments proved hard to repair at sea and the crew had to continue with limited and at times no wind data as they made the final approach to the north west tip of Scotland. The team slashed 21 hours and 14 minutes off the existing record held by British sailor Phil Sharp. Crew member and All at Sea columnist Lizzy Foreman said: “It is absolutely fantastic to cross the finish line, this was tricky tactical sailing, but really great fun and great to finish. It is a fantastic boost in our skill levels and to improve our tactical and navigation skills. “This has been a huge benefit to me, to pick up new things from the other crew members, and this is a real stepping stone from the smaller boats I have been racing to step up to a boat this size.” www.vendee2020vision.com

THERE is good news for the marine industry after a British Marine report released at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show showed production levels are up and revenue is growing*. Growth is being led by small and medium sized boat builders, with the lion’s share of production absorbed by the mid-sized powerboat market (12m to 24m), sailing dinghies and RIBs. Commenting on the state of the

UK’s boat manufacturing sector, British Marine CEO, Howard Pridding, said: “Boatbuilding in the UK has changed dramatically since the last decade, with demographic and social change re-shaping manufacturers’ customer base and their access and approach to spending and boat ownership. “As a result, the market for boat builders in traditional boat segments has narrowed for boat builders across the world.

“UK boatbuilders have adapted. Our members continue to find opportunities and commercial niches to exploit in the Eurozone, and increasingly in established and emerging markets outside of Europe.” *The UK’s boatbuilding sector grew in 2016, with unit production climbing by +1.5 per cent to 9,907 units. Revenue increased by +1.6 per cent, generating £859 million in turnover in 2016, meaning that boat production accounts for over a third of the marine industry’s £3.01billion revenue.

NEWS SNAPS FOOTBALL WINNERS A marine industry charity 5-a-side tournament raised £1,000 for Southampton hospital charities. For the second year running, tournament stalwarts, PSP Logistics, took home the silverware, winning the main cup competition with a 3-1 victory over a team from Southampton FC’s corporate division. The Plate competition was won by newcomers, Moody Decking, who beat MatchTech 4-3.

RESTORATION

For the first time ever an original Landing Craft Tank will be on display at the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth. This has been made possible thanks to an investment of nearly £5m from The National Lottery and has been planned to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the landings in two years’ time. Over 800 LCTs with the capacity to carry 10 tanks or equivalent armoured vehicles were involved in Operation Neptune, the naval element of Overlord. LCT 7074 is believed to be one of only 10 survivors from this fleet.

FUNDS FOR CARIBBEAN THE Andrew Simpson Foundation and Bart’s Bash have united to provide aid for rebuilding grassroots sailing programmes and communities affected by Hurricane Irma. A number of sailing and yacht clubs in the Caribbean that have been affected by Hurricane Irma have taken part in Bart’s Bash in previous years and had planned to hold events over the Bart’s Bash weekend in September. Hurricane Maria added to the extensive damage after the region was pummelled by a second major storm in two weeks. Tragically a British man was amongst the dead after a boat capsized off Puerto Rico. According to the US coastguard a British Royal Navy helicopter hoisted a woman and two children from the overturned vessel. The Andrew Simpson Foundation has

pledged to use the funds raised from this year’s Bart’s Bash to help those affected eventually rebuild their community sailing projects, allowing them to continue to deliver grassroots sailing programmes to young people. Founding Trustee and, most recently, Artemis Racing’s Team Manager for the America’s Cup Iain Percy, said: “The news and images from the Caribbean are simply horrific and the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma has been something none of us has ever witnessed on this scale. Our thoughts go out to everyone affected. HRH The Princess Royal is to attend the annual awards ceremony for National Historic Ships UK. The awards take place on 1 November in London. A key part of the occasion will be the presentation of a series of awards recognising excellence and outstanding achievements in the conservation of historic vessels. For the past seven years NHS UK has also staged a photography competition to capture the spirit of the UK’s maritime heritage. Past winners have gone on to become leading photographers in the marine industry.

UNITE FOR BART’S BASH

A working group from within the marine industry has been formed to co-ordinate Sail Aid UK, a fundraising initiative to support victims of the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma across the Caribbean. A Hurricane Irma Relief Fundraising Dinner will take place on 11 November on the Flight Deck at Land Rover BAR, the home of the British America’s Cup Team, in Old Portsmouth. Many high profile sailing names have already pledged their support for the cause including Sir Ben and Lady Georgie Ainslie, Ian Walker, Shirley Robertson, Sam Davies, Andy Beadsworth and Helena Lucas. The funds raised will be channelled towards helping support the relief effort for the regeneration and reconstruction of communities in those British territories in the Caribbean that have been most severely hit by the hurricane. These include, but are not limited to, the islands of the BVI, Antigua and Barbuda and Anguilla. The funds will be allocated to specific projects based on various criteria set out by the trustees, with a key focus being on supporting the communities that are dependant on the sea and watersports for their livelihood and social wellbeing.

The November fundraising event is the main launch initiative that kick-starts a longer-term plan to help the islanders rebuild their lives, their businesses and their economies. Speaking on behalf of the Sail Aid UK team international yachtsman Philippe Falle said: “The UK sailing community pledges to support the Caribbean victims of the 2017 hurricanes which have completely destroyed entire islands. It will take years to rebuild a part of the world that so many of us enjoy both professionally and for our leisure activities.” He continued, “Sail Aid UK strives to support that process and this exciting fundraising dinner with many sailing celebrities and stars already committed to supporting it gives everyone focus. CEO of The Andrew Simpson Foundation, who are headquartered at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Pete Allam, said, “We knew it was going to be a tough call getting 125 boats off the start line at the appointed time of 1300 when we knew that the wind was due to die and change direction by 180 degrees. However, after a couple of rainstorms we got everyone off the start line and enjoyed a great race.” Novices, world champions and gold medallists joined together on the course with sailors from across the generations competing in Oppies, Lasers, RS Fevers, Toppers, Foiling Nacra 17s, Venture Keelboats, 29ers and even a couple of Foiling Moths, although conditions were not ideal for foiling. Of particular poignance was Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation Trustee and founder, Iain Percy, sailing in the Star boat that he and Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson sailed their last race together in at the London 2012 Olympics. They won silver, to add to their Olympic gold medal achieved in the same class previously at the 2008 Beijing Games. Two young sailors, Ben Thomas and Billy Hope, volunteers at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre, were selected to race their Bart’s Bash with Iain in the

Star. The boys have, between them, given around 2,000 hours of their time to help young people learn to sail. Both of them are keen racers and have competed at national level. THIS year’s TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show 2017 finished with news of strong attendance, record numbers of visitors on the water and positive sales reports. Many of the nearly 500 exhibitors recorded year on year increased sales and enquiry leads. For visitors there were 35 world launches, 12 European, 70 UK and 39 show debuts. More than 106,000 visitors attended the show with close to 15,000 getting out on the water, an increase of 50 per cent on previous years. Many of those were experiencing boating for the first time. Visitors were treated to a jam-packed schedule throughout the show offering something for everyone from families, kids and beginners through to the more expert boater. The show also welcomed a host of celebrities during the course of the 10 days including Millie Mackintosh, Kym Marsh, Colin Jackson CBE, Suzi Perry, Mike Golding OBE, Hannah Mills MBE, Helena Lucas MBE and Alex Thompson.

The Mercy will be released in cinemas on 9 February, 2018. The film follows the true story of Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth), an amateur sailor who competed in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in the hope of becoming the first person to singlehandedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping. Co-starring David Thewlis and Ken Stott, the story of Crowhurst’s dangerous solo voyage and the struggles he confronted on the epic journey is one of the most enduring mysteries of recent times.

However, as the latest edition was preparing to depart there was uncertainty surrounding the next edition of the race. Following discussions with key stakeholders it was decided that additional planning time is required to implement the changes to the race schedule. As a result, the proposed 2019-20 race in new boats will not take place as planned. A revised schedule for future Volvo Ocean

Races will be announced in time. The design work on the new Super 60 concept, at the forefront of foiling offshore monohull technology, continues. As a consequence of this review to the race schedule the current CEO for the race, Mark Turner, has stepped down. However he will remain in the role until a successor is appointed. WITH the 45,000nm Volvo Ocean Race set to start later this month final preparations are being made by the seven teams. In September the crews relinquished their Volvo Ocean 65 boats to Volvo Ocean Race organisers for a mandatory pre-race review of all systems in Lisbon, Portugal. One of the unique elements of the One Design era is that all major maintenance is done by a central boatyard facility, run by Volvo Ocean Race staff, instead of by the teams. It will be nearly 9,000nm until the next big service in Cape Town, and so the boats will receive a thorough going over. Neil Cox, head of the boatyard, said: “We are confident they are in great shape and by the time we are done with them the boats will be fit to go the distance, all the way to Cape Town.” As well as checking over the boats after an estimated 12,000 miles of pre-race testing, the boatyard will be confirming that the boats are perfectly identical and will issue the measurement certificates that allow them to race as a one design fleet. The time away from the boats gave Volvo Ocean Race invaluable time on shore for a rigorous sea survival course in Newcastle. Then, when the teams got their boats back, they returned to Alicante, Spain for the first InPort Race on 14 October and then Leg 1 which starts on 22 October. This will take the fleet approximately 700nm from Alicante to Lisbon. The teams are: Team AkzoNobel, Dongfeng Race Team, MAPFRE, Vestas 11th Hour Racing, Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag, Turn The Tide on Plastic and Team Brunel. The professional teams include well known names in sailing including first time Volvo Ocean Race sailors Peter Burling (Team Brunel) and Martine Grael (Team AkzoNobel) who have been nominated as World Sailors of the Year.

A cargo ship was forced to turn around when Greenpeace protesters used kayaks and boats to reach the 23,000-tonne car carrier in the Thames Estuary. They climbed on board claiming they would remain until Volkswagen “takes its toxic cars back to Germany”. ANDY Woodruff, 41, from Poole has been appointed as the interim skipper for the Greenings team in the Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race. Joining the team in Punta del Este, Uruguay, at the end of September, Andy will provide relief cover for Skipper David Hartshorn who was subject to a helicopter medevac during the opening leg of the race following a serious hand injury. Clipper Race Director Mark Light said: “The incident occurred around 450nm off the Portuguese coast whilst David was leading a spinnaker drop in breezy conditions. Unfortunately, his left thumb became caught in one of the lines which resulted in some serious damage.” “He required four hours of surgery on his fractured, partially detached left thumb, and will need another operation upon returning to the UK but is expected to regain full use, albeit with some potential stiffness, following recovery time.” On his new role Andy Woodruff, who already has over 60,000nm in his logbook, said: “It is a great honour to be joining such a prestigious global event as the Clipper Race. My aim is to continue the fantastic work that David Hartshorn has started on board Greenings.” Andy is well-known on the international sailing scene having trained with the GBR Challenge for the America’s Cup in 2001/02 with skipper, Ian Walker. For the past 11 months he has been running training and event courses at the Clipper Race’s Gosport, Hampshire, HQ. On Andy’s appointment, Clipper Race Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said: “Stepping in as an interim skipper once a team has already been performing together is perhaps an added challenge, but Andy has

fully embraced this opportunity to lead the Greenings team until David Hartshorn is well enough to return. “We all wish David a speedy recovery. In the meantime, I am confident that Andy will do an excellent job, and myself and my team will fully support him in his role.” After leaving Liverpool at the end of August, Sanya Serenity Coast claimed line honours in Punta del Este, Uruguay, in the longest ever individual race of the Clipper Race’s eleven edition history. On her team’s achievement, Skipper Wendy Tuck, 52, from Sydney, Australia, said: “During the last big wind hole, which changed the leader board so much, I was pouring over the weather files for hours. “I was pretty happy with my tactics but when you get to the wind hole and the wind completely drops, even though you know it is coming, you always have nightmares about other boats moving ahead, but you have to stick with your convictions.” The 6,400nm route, which is the equivalent distance of 10 Fastnet races, was eventful, including three medevacs, and a varied mix of fickle winds in the Doldrums, challenging seas state, and champagne sailing conditions in the Trade Winds, which contributed to frequent changes on the leader board, and a closely fought battle amongst the fleet. In the standings after Leg 1, behind Sanya Serenity Coast, in second position is PSP Logistics followed by Great Britain. The race route is split into eight separate legs. THE Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017 Voyage were welcomed back to Largs 126 days after setting sail. Friends, family and supporters were there to greet them as the crew completed their circumnavigation of the British Isles. Since the voyage began on 20 May, over 125 young people in recovery from cancer from across the UK have been involved in the project, covering 2,206nm in 17 legs. CEO of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, Frank Fletcher, said: “The achievements and future potential of every single one of those young people continues to inspire me. To watch this voyage touch so many people around the UK and to see the combined achievements of this Trust crew has been amazing.” Ryan Campbell, 22 from Gourock, was on board for the final leg and had the honour of helming Moonspray as they sailed back across the finish line. He summed up what the experience meant to him: “I feel absolutely honoured to be involved in the last leg of Round Britain. It is such an amazing cause and there is nothing else like it out there. It is not focused on being ill, it is

about surpassing what you think you cannot do and everyone rises to the occasion.” Amongst the guests welcoming the crew back was Olympic Silver Medallist, Luke Patience. Luke spent time with some of the young people earlier on in the Scottish legs of the voyage and said: “It has been amazing for me to be part of this and to meet some of the young people, hear what they have been going through and how the Trust has helped. “Half way through this journey I came on board with the Trust as an ambassador and it has been an extremely humbling experience for me. It has been something that more recently has come close to my heart, so I have been absolutely honoured to be part of this and share some stories.” Dame Ellen MacArthur, Founding Patron of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, said: “It is an amazing journey to sail around Britain and I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has made it happen. HYTHE SUBSIDY

Hythe Ferry is to receive a £75,000 subsidy. The move comes six months after Hythe Ferry was saved when Blue Funnel Cruises bought out White Horse Ferries. The report outlining the new funding stated: “Given the pressures of the current financial climate, the county council will regularly need to review all its revenue expenditure, and so no long-term guarantees can be given for future revenue funding.” Campaigners have raised concerns about a lack of funding guarantees beyond April 2019.

Spirit Yachts unveiled the designs for its 34m sailing yacht, the Spirit 111’, for the first time at the Southampton Boat Show. Captain Moorhouse is a former Commanding Officer of HMS Ocean and HMS Lancaster, known as the ‘Queen’s Frigate’ because Her Majesty is the ship’s sponsor. Captain Moorhouse said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as the first seagoing Captain of HMS Prince of Wales, a hugely exciting job to be in at such an important time for the Royal Navy. “Seeing our sister ship HMS Queen Elizabeth make her debut in Portsmouth was an amazing sight, and I look forward to one day bringing HMS Prince of Wales home to the same warm welcome.” The announcement was made two days before the warship was officially named during a ceremony in Rosyth, Scotland.

HOVERCRAFT LINK

Discussions have taken place between councillors and Hovertravel to develop a hovercraft service linking Southampton and Portsmouth. In the next six months it is expected that a funding proposal will be submitted to the Solent LEP.

MARY’S MILLIONS

The Mary Rose Museum, which is home to Henry VIII’s war ship, has celebrated 10 million visitors. The 10 millionth visitor, Mike Perkins and his wife Sandra, were invited to a behind-the-scenes tour. The Mary Rose was raised from the sea in 1982 and housed in the old museum in 1983. Then, 30 years later, the new attraction opened next to HMS Victory and in 2016 re-opened after a refurbishment.

WORLD SAILOR OF THE YEAR AFTER several successful years in which Sarah Ayton and the duo Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark won Rolex World Sailor of the Year, this year’s nominees do not include any British sailors. However, it will be hard to pick a winner with America’s Cup winning helmsman Peter Burling, Singlehanded Round the World Record holder Thomas Coville and Vendée Globe winner Armel Le Cleac’h nominated alongside America’s Cup winning Skipper Glenn Ashby.

The women vying for the prestigious title are: Marit Bouwmeester, 2017 Laser Radial World Champion, Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze, 49erFX World Cup Series Champions, Sarah-Quita Offringa, Pro Windsurfers Association World Tour Freestyle and Slalom World Champion and Tara Pacheco (helmed by Fernando Echavarri), Nacra 17 World Cup Series Champions. The winners will be announced on 7 November, at the World Sailing Awards Ceremony in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon, said: “HMS Prince of Wales is a prestigious name for what I am sure will be a most prestigious ship. It is yet another landmark in an incredibly busy year for the Royal Navy and shipbuilding. “HMS Queen Elizabeth has undergone her sea trials and arrived into Portsmouth, I have cut the steel on the new Type 26 frigates and we announced our ambitious new National Shipbuilding Strategy. “Together these magnificent carriers will act as our statement to the world. By having two we will ensure the UK will be one of the few nations able to maintain a continuous carrier strike presence on the high seas to project our power across the world.” The ship will be the eighth in the Royal Navy to bear the name HMS Prince of Wales, honouring Britain’s history as a seafaring nation from the Sixth Rate gun ship in 1693 to the King George V Class Battleship that fought in World War II. With a crew of 679 HMS Prince of Wales is expected to carry out sea trials in 2019 before entering Royal Navy service.

SUZUKI LIGHTEST IN CLASS FOLLOWING the launch of its flagship outboard, the DF350A, Suzuki has announced the new DF100B. At just 157kg, the DF100B outboard is 25kg lighter than the existing DF100A and 6kg lighter than the closest competitor. Suzuki has based the new DF100B on a proven design by using the same 1502cc engine unit as the DF70A/80A/90A models. However, it has up-rated the ECM as well as adding a water detection fuel filter. This filter is designed to help protect the engine by alerting the driver when water is present in the fuel. The outboard will be available in Pearl Nebular Black with a large 3D silver ‘S’

PARALYMPIC Gold Medallist Helena Lucas MBE highlighted a local success story at the Southampton Boat Show when she presented the new Seaward 39 motor cruiser. The layout accommodates four in the owner’s suite and mid-section guest cabin. The boat also has a large well-equipped galley amidships and spacious wheelhouse that doubles as a day saloon and dining room with panoramic views. The aft cockpit, which is easily accessed from the wheelhouse and side decks, has a large table for al-fresco dining, together with a stern platform, which is moulded into the hull to provide a safe and stable boarding

point from a dinghy and for swimming from. Their Seaward boats range from 19 to 46ft, and commercial versions are used by harbour authorities and pilots across the world. The Boat Development Co Ltd, builders of the Seaward range, has been in Cowes for almost five years. This new Seaward 39 is the first in its class of private motor cruisers. Mike Burnham, Director, said: “This Seaward 39 is the latest product in a massive development programme to heighten quality, comfort and ride right across the range. “We have made considerable improvements to the interior furnishings by bringing these craftsmanship skills in-house. SHADOW BOOT

Marine footwear is extremely important in order to stay safe while sailing. We decided to try out the Henri Lloyd Shadow Boot, which is ideal for offshore and coastal sailors. This is a fully waterproof and breathable leather boot constructed from high grade leathers with Cordura panels. We found they are really warm and comfortable, even when worn all day. The boot features a Dri-Lex lining which transports perspiration away from the foot which definitely helps to keep you comfortable for longer.

Interestingly, they feature a technology called Outlast which was originally developed by NASA to protect astronauts against temperature fluctuations in space. This technology stores the heat from the foot as it warms and gives it back to when it cools. A great feature for sailors. Importantly they also have good grip on wet decks. MEN’S ELITE THERM MID LAYER JACKET

This mid layer jacket from Henri Lloyd is part of the Offshore Elite range. It is an incredibly versatile piece of kit and can be used on its own or as part of the three-layer system when worn with the H-Therm Base Layers and a fully waterproof outer shell. For those wearing it as a layer, it is lightweight and compact, making it ideal. As we discovered on a wet afternoon the jacket is waterproof, although for extreme conditions you would want the outer layer too. The fabric is coated with a durable water repellent finish that helps shed surface water, which gives a faster dry time; always a welcome feature. The fleece collar lining is a nice addition, and while the Primaloft lining gave warmth, the jacket was comfortable to wear on warmer days too. We also liked the adjustable wrist cuffs. As it will probably see a great deal of action on board it is reassuring to know there is reinforcement fabric at areas of high abrasion. Another welcome feature is the grip around the waist that stops the jacket rising up when working on the boat. There are also a couple of pockets, plus a zipped interior pocket, useful for storing important items. This jacket is warm, comfy, lightweight and compact, although perhaps a flash of colour somewhere would be welcome on what is a completely black jacket. What do you love most about your job?

Every day I get to do the thing I love most – sail! We started Team Concise to provide an opportunity for young, offshore sailors to compete in some of the biggest sailing races in the world. I get immense satisfaction from knowing that I am actively helping others to fulfil their dreams, and in the process I get to sail with some of the most passionate and talented young sailors in the world.

As much as I love what I do, it can be mentally and physically stressful at times.

When I am at sea, I love the open expanses and broad horizons. It feels as if I am a million miles away from civilisation, and that makes me feel very free. With the wind in my hair and nothing in sight except miles and miles of sea, it truly helps to put life into perspective and clear my head. I also do a lot of road cycling to keep myself fit when I am not on the boat.

Your job is very extreme. o you orry about safety?

Yes, we worry about safety all the time. We are sailing our boats to their absolute limits and there is a very real danger that something could go wrong. With that in mind we constantly work on procedures to ensure we are ready.

If you could give your younger self one piece of ad ice hat ould it be?

What is your biggest achievement to date and hy?

My biggest personal achievement is creating and leading Team Concise with CEO Tony Lawson. It is a competitive offshore racing team that can hold its own, and beat the best sailors in the world on one of the most extreme boats in the world. My career highlight has to be our MOD70 (70ft multihull yacht) campaign. To successfully make the leap to racing such a powerful boat against the best sailors in the world, and to be competitive within a year feels like a real achievement. Winning the Round Barbados race by 12 seconds, and breaking the record by just under two hours, was an incredible moment of realisation, and a pretty great alive moment for me!

Sailing can be perceived as an expensive hobby/sport. How can people get involved who have never sailed before?

I think all hobbies can become expensive. However, it is a misconception that sailing is an inaccessible, or elitist sport. There are as many as 650 sailing clubs in the UK alone, and most of these will offer introductory courses. The majority of sailing clubs welcome new members and will be incredibly supportive of anyone who is new to sailing. As a highly accredited sailor in his own right, Ned has led Team Concise to many notable victories. He is now renowned as one of the top class 40 skippers and multihull sailors in the world, with his young team being described by the Royal Ocean Racing Club as the future of British sailing. www.teamconcise.com

What was the biggest challenge you faced hen pursuing your drea ?

In order to pursue a dream, you have to be committed and fully devote yourself to it. This means making many sacrifices along the way. As a professional sailor I spend large amounts of time away from home, and of course I miss my family and friends. Even when I am in the UK, I still need to follow a strict training regime, which means I cannot always join in with the things other people my age (29) are doing.

Who or what was your biggest inspiration and hy?

My inspiration lies with a great friend, Rob Gauntlett. He was the youngest Briton to ever summit Mount Everest, at just 19. A year later, he completed the 180° expedition from the North Pole to South Pole, travelling by ski, bike and boat. Sadly, in 2009 Rob died in a climbing accident, but his memory lives on and he still inspires me today, because of his drive, passion and incredible determination.

What is your ulti ate drea

goal?

My ultimate goal is to bring together and create a team that wins the Volvo Ocean Race. It has to be the toughest sailing race in the world, where you really experience life at the extreme. The race covers more than 45,000nm of the world’s most treacherous seas, over a period of nine months away from home. Sailors are exposed to all types of extreme weather conditions, and temperatures as low as -5 Celsius, so it truly tests athletes and their kit. Sailors have to be at the top of their game in order to endure this race – from a physical and mental perspective – and only compete when they are the best of the best, so that is the big dream for me.

Sail as many different boats as possible and do not be afraid to ask everyone questions. Being versatile is a valuable skill in whichever discipline you choose, and there is no substitute for time on the water. If you get the opportunity to sail with some of the biggest names and most successful guys, make the most of it – they are always keen to pass on their advice and skills.

It then did many trips across the channel from Dunkirk to return thousands of soldiers back from the war before ending up as a floating nightclub at Island Harbour Marina until it was destroyed by a fire.

The club runs sailing sessions for novices and improvers on Tuesday evenings, a pirates group for children under 12 at weekends and dinghy racing on Friday nights, together with fun events including match racing from the club’s beach, treasure hunts and sailing picnics around the harbour. Breaking into an offshore crew can prove a challenge for many young sailors. For those aged 18 - 24 the British Keelboat Academy can offer the opportunity to do just that, either through progressing via the inshore programme or directly into the offshore programme for those with some experience. The BKA is designed to support young people to develop the skills needed to take their keelboat yacht racing to the next level, whether as a professional or an amateur. Competing in a range of events during the season, the Academy sailors

will receive top class coaching from a variety of professional sailors. In addition to this, sailors will receive training ashore spanning subjects including winching, meteorology, navigation, racing rules, rig tuning and sail trim, with input from marine leaders and industry professionals. This season, the offshore squad competed in numerous events across the Channel, culminating in the prestigious Rolex Fastnet Race. Having the correct kit is essential for offshore racing

RACING in yachts or keelboats involves technology, technique, timing, individual skills, observation, concentration, a wholebody workout, application of rules, tactics and teamwork. Long-distance offshore racing brings a different set of issues to inshore racing. For example, boats will need to exceed a minimum stability rating. Crew will need to be fed and watered even when nobody wants to go below and cook. They will need to carry warm clothing and have good-quality waterproofs to keep warm and dry. If the race duration is more than 12 hours you should think about some sort of ‘watch-keeping system’ so that the crew, and you, remain fresh and able to function.

THE RIGHT KIT

You may need extra equipment such as a liferaft, additional anchor, searchlights, an EPIRB, batteries and re-arming kits for lifejackets. You will need to carry enough fuel to potentially motor home. You will also need to analyse the weather forecast for the whole of the race duration plus the passage home.

CHANGING HABITS

Then there are the little changes in disciplines. Halyard tails that are simply thrown down the companionway during a race around the cans will need to be tidied away properly, not just to keep them ready for use but also to keep the accommodation area safe and dry.

Spinnakers that would be left in the forepeak, ready for a ‘hatch hoist’ in a smooth-water race, will need to be repacked and put away, again in the interest of maintaining a dry and safe environment. Navigationally, anticipated changes in wind direction will have an influence over your planned course, which may no longer be the shortest route to your destination. You will need to carry passage charts plus details of any harbours that might prove to be a ‘port of refuge’ if conditions deteriorate unexpectedly. STATUS UPDATE - HOLIDAYING IN THE CARIBBEAN? If you have a holiday booked in the Caribbean you are best to get in touch with your tour operator who will be able to advise you about the latest situation following the devastation left by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. With tropical storm force winds spanning a massive 70,000 square miles, Hurricane Irma was larger than the surface area of England (50,301 square miles). The maximum sustained speed of Irma’s winds was recorded at 185mph, making it the joint second most powerful Atlantic hurricane on record behind Hurricane Allen’s 190mph winds in 1980. There are over 5,000 islands in the area and, while we know the areas worst affected by Hurrucane Irma, it will take time to fully assess the damage. Speaking about the impact on the British Virgin Islands Sharon Flax-Brutus, the director of tourism, said: “The destruction caused by Hurricane Irma in the British Virgin Islands has been devastating. The destination has lost entire structures and many homes are without roofs, or have been diminished to merely foundations.” Of St Maarten/St Martin the Caribbean Tourism Organisation said: “It has been reported that much of the dual-island nation has suffered significant damage, with hotels, government offices, homes and smaller buildings badly damaged on both the Dutch and French sides of the island.” A statement from the Caribbean Tourism Organisation added: “Antigua was spared Irma’s brunt, but it passed over the island of Barbuda.” It also stated that Antigua’s infrastructure was “largely unscathed” while Barbuda suffered “extensive damage”. Dream Yacht Charter founder, Loic Bonnet, said: “Our fleet and business remains strong after the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria across the Caribbean, which hit St. Martin, the British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico particularly hard. “Our Caribbean fleet capacity will be restored by the end of this year. Dream Yacht Charter had 70 boats in St. Martin and the BVI when Irma hit and we anticipate 60 per cent will be declared a total loss, although we have yet to have a final report from the loss adjustors. While the impact on our fleet and 2017 revenue is significant, it is more than manageable and we have rolled out our business continuity plans. “The pre-Irma fleet in the St. Martin and the BVI represented just 25 per cent of our Caribbean fleet across Puerto Rico, BVI, St. Martin, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Vincent & Grenada before Irma. We had been careful not to grow any one base too big in the Caribbean because of the risks, so we are well spread globally.” “Since the hurricanes, we have worked to mitigate the impact on our customers by: n Purchasing 20 new replacement boats for the St. Martin and BVI fleets to be delivered by the end of 2017. They will include Lagoon 52s, Bali 4.5 catamarans, Dufour 520 and Sun Odyssey 519 monohulls

n Purchasing the Regis Guillemot fleet in Martinique, adding about 30 catamarans to our fleet in this popular destination n Planning to fully re-open our St. Martin and BVI bases mid November n Relocating customers with St. Martin and BVI charters in September and October to other Caribbean bases or destinations, such as Grenada, Antigua, Martinique, the Mediterranean, Seychelles, Asia, Pacific, Bahamas and Mexico n Finding replacement boats or relocating customers with St. Martin and BVI charters in November n Planning to fully re-open Puerto Rico by mid-October “Our bases in Antigua, Martinique, St. Vincent and Grenada are fully operational. We intend to come back stronger than ever.” BVI Yacht Charters told us: “We are still working to complete full assessments of all of our boats. As you can imagine many of our boats were damaged, but thankfully most can be repaired. At this point we can confirm that we will not be offering charters in October or November. The whole team is working very hard to ensure that we repair, replace and rebuild in time for Christmas. We will be back in December, stronger than ever! We would like to encourage all of our guests with charters booked in October and November to consider rescheduling their trip. The best way you can help us, and the rest of the BVI, is to come and charter with us soon. We have no doubt that the bars and restaurants will be back up and running in no time, the beaches will be cleared and the water is the same beautiful colour it has always been.” Minister of tourism for The Bahamas, Dionisio D’Aguilar said: “We have weathered many storms, we are resilient and we will navigate the road to recovery together. We have activated our Hurricane Relief Fund to help our people and countries rebuild after the storm. Visitors will find fewer tourists, more settled weather patterns and tropical fruit and flowers are in season. Yachts can visit anchorages and islands that are otherwise difficult to get to in stormy, windy conditions. Christmas is also a popular time, with bookings often made a year in advance. So if you would like to take a Caribbean sailing holiday, as with those who have already booked, get in touch with your chosen holiday company for the latest advice. Many of the islands rely heavily on tourism and so the sooner visitors return the better, once the islands are ready.

DUST, DEBRIS AND DRIPS As the nights draw in, thoughts will be turning to annual winter maintenance tasks and the chore of scrubbing down hulls and applying a new coat of antifoul for next season. Emma Barton, RYA Planning & Environmental Manager

ntifouling paints are hazardous mixtures that prevent the build-up of marine organisms on vessel hulls. They work largely by releasing biocides into the water, preventing organisms from attaching themselves to the bottom of boats. Whilst this is good for keeping the hull clean, improving efficiency through the water and preventing the spread

of invasive non-native species, it does mean that some of the toxic ingredients leach into the water. Increased concentrations of copper can sometimes be found in the sediment around lift out points in estuaries and rivers and can find their way into the food chain causing a wide range of environmental problems and can also increase dredging costs.

paint particles. They can be swept up and put in the hazardous waste bin. If you use scrubbing piles, only scrub off the fouling and not the residue paint â&#x20AC;&#x201C; be careful not to let debris enter the water. When sanding, use a dustless vacuum sander to reduce toxic dust from the paint and antifouling coatings. Most marinas, clubs and boatyards would prefer not to have their sites covered with blue patches and do not want loose material entering the water or nearby surface water drains. Tarpaulins are an easy and inexpensive solution when sanding or scrubbing and to catch drips and spills when painting.

Boat owners can play a vital role in preventing concentrated scrapings from entering the water by following best practice advice from The Green Blue. A growing number of marinas, clubs and boatyards have installed washdown facilities which collect residues from your boat instead of letting it run back into the water. Some also recycle the wastewater for re-use, preventing pollution and saving water costs. If you wash your hull off on a slipway, place a length of rope across the slope to catch larger

It is also important to note that antifouling tins, as well as topside paints, varnishes and solvents, must be disposed of as hazardous waste in the hazardous waste bins, as do used brushes, rollers and trays. Take advice from your chandlery on the correct type of antifoul for your location and use, preferably with the lowest levels of biocides and copper suitable for your needs. Take a look at different technologies, copper free antifouling or alternative hull paints such as vinyl, silicone or Teflon or even consider an ultrasonic system. And do not forget, always follow the paint manufacturer recommendations and wear the recommended Personal Protective Equipment to minimise skin contact and avoid breathing dust. At the start of 2017, the RYA, the British Coatings Federation and British Marine teamed up to launch the DIY Safe Antifouling Initiative 2017. The DIY Safe Antifouling Initiative includes a range of freely available resources for reference and display, including a poster, video, trifold leaflet and guidance document. 9. No attempt should be made to try and make a collar from rolled up materials. This will not immobilise the neck and harm may be caused in the attempt. Always wait for instruction from medical help.

1. Ensure it is safe to approach the casualty. Assess if the casualty has a clear airway and is breathing. It is vital to tell the casualty not to move. 2. Support the head in a neutral position and keep the casualty from making any movement. This may be done by placing the hands on either side of their head. (see pic 1)

3. Ask if the casualty has any difficulty breathing, any pain, or tingling or strange sensation in any part of the body. See if they can wiggle toes and fingers. (see pic 2)

Spinal injury is caused by an abnormal force or violent twisting or bending. The most vulnerable areas are the neck and lower back. Injury may involve bones, discs, muscles, ligaments, spinal cord and nerves (the most serious). The most important indicator of spinal injury is the mechanism of the injury i.e. how it occurred. Where there has been a blow to the head or a fall from a height, neck (cervical spine) injury should always be suspected. A fall from a height, jumping from a height and landing on the feet, or a blow to the

BUCKET LIST BOSHAM How many sailing events are still on your bucket list? We might have another one to tempt you…

lthough it might sound a little mawkish, these days we tend to love not just our top ten lists but our so called bucket lists – a wish list of sailing events to do before we curl our toes en route for the calmer oceans in the sky. For the big boat sailor, it is easy to compile such a list… Antigua Week, the Fastnet, Sydney to Hobart, even the Round the Island Race for those who have yet to do this iconic race. For the small boat sailor, however, this task is quite a bit harder. There is Salcombe Week for the Merlin Rockets (featured recently in All at Sea) and the iconic Prince of Wales Trophy for the International 14s, the Finn Gold has to be right up then and then there is... as you can see, it gets a lot trickier. CLASSIC EVENT Luckily there is now an event that has gained sufficient stature and profile to force its way onto any self-respecting bucket list of sailing events that just have to be done and, more importantly, it is one that is open to all. All at Sea have featured the Classic Boat Revival at Bosham before and make no apologies for doing so again, for in a season that has been notable for the decline in the numbers of boats attending championships and open meetings, Bosham have hit upon a winning formula that has seen their numbers increase again.

Yet the package is one of real simplicity. You start with a beautiful, picturesque setting, ensure that the club is attractive and welcoming, then tightly organise an event for the best of our ‘classic’ small boats. It helps that success breeds success, as the strength of the Classic Boat Revival brand has seen ongoing support from a healthy number of blue chip sponsors. Strides, the Sussex based Auction House enjoy a long-standing relationship with the event, as do the harbour based Haines boatyard, where a number of superbly eye-catching boats have undergone their restorations. Then there is the involvement of Pusser’s Rum, a classic that needs nothing in the way of restoration, just drinking. MOTHER NATURE The only thing that the organisers at Bosham cannot control is the weather, though in recent years one gets the impression that they are working on this too. As in previous years, the weekend would be an inclusive mix of hot sunny weather and pleasant breezes, then a day of wind and rain that tests the real race credentials of these older (and some are bus pass elderly) boats. As the visiting boats rigged on the green in front of the church on the Saturday morning, there must have been some who were thinking that there was little chance of any

racing, for despite the warm sunshine, the waters were glassy smooth. PRO Nick Fox knew better, however, and promised that with just an hour’s delay, the sea breeze would be fully in play allowing a full programme of racing. In this prediction he was spot on, with all three fleets of fast, medium and slow boats all enjoying a truly classic day of close racing. Considering the age of some of the entries (the boats, not the crews!) it was clear that there would be nothing in the way of any allowance for age. It was a race course and the boats had to compete, closely, for every position. At the end of the day, with a full programme of racing completed, there was the helpful push of the tide back up to the slipway at Bosham, just in time for a thirst quenching drink, then hot food at the club, all to the sounds of a cool jazz band.

BATTLING ON Sadly, this idyll would not last, with Sunday morning greeting competitors with low, scudding clouds, persistent rain and enough weight in the wind for some of the more fragile entries to start derigging. By the time racing got under way, conditions had deteriorated further, with strong gusts coming through with the squall fronts; some of these blasts were quite unpleasant, with one strong enough to snap a mast like a matchstick. It says much about the quality of the restorations of some of these older boats that they battled on to complete their schedule, before the much-anticipated return to the Bosham Clubhouse for a complimentary high tea. The prize giving saw the results just as they should be, for the boats to have been on the podium, they had to have performed well across both the days. At the same time, for a boat to be in consideration for the sought after Concours Prize, it had to race for the whole weekend. In this competition, as in the main racing, there was nothing between any of the leading competitors. Little wonder then that Bosham is becoming such a ‘must do’ event but be warned; the standards of sailing and of quality of entry goes up with each passing year. As a bucket list event that anyone can attend, Bosham ticks so many boxes. Winning there is another matter, but for many that will not matter, for this really is a case where just to be there, to compete, is reward enough.

he All At Sea team met with several marina operators at last month’s Southampton Boat Show and was repeatedly impressed by the many changes being made not only to improve facilities for berth holders but also to make their marinas attractive to the many would-be boat owners and their families. Long gone are the days of dirty old boatyards full of oil drum and chains. Many of today’s marinas resemble upmarket holiday resorts offering restaurants, smart coffee and wine bars, shops, playgrounds, onshore accommodation and in some cases spas and even cinemas. Each month we will be featuring a different marina to find out about their recent changes and their plans and vision for the future.

OCEAN VILLAGE MARINA

We kick off the new series with a visit to MDL’s Ocean Village Marina to see firsthand the £3.5million transformation of the marina, with the opening of the five-star, luxury Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa. Team AAS were the very first guests to be shown inside the new Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa, which is perched beautifully amongst the other hi-rise blocks that surround the pontoons. We were taken one evening by boat from the Southampton Boat Show to the pontoon alongside the new hotel. After being fitted with hi-vis jackets (as work was still going in inside, in preparation for

the opening this month) we were taken by lift to the spectacular rooftop bar and Jetty restaurant, which have panoramic views across the Solent. We enjoyed canapés from the hotel’s mouth-watering menu, with the Head Chef providing us with a ‘Taste of the Jetty’. The marina has been undergoing an extensive redesign and refurbishment since 2015, as part of a five-year investment strategy, which will complete in 2020. The marina redevelopment includes the opening of new restaurants and bars, as well as a renovation of its berthing facilities. Bringing together leisure, sailing and a stunning location to live, Ocean Village offers a lifestyle which encapsulates Southampton’s maritime heritage and thriving millennial scene. The Harbour Hotels Group 85-bedroom luxury hotel has been cleverly designed to reflect a super yacht and is positioned on the edge of the promontory projecting into the marina. It could be a refresher on manoeuvring or berthing, crew training, anchoring or a specialist workshop,” explained Guy Malpas who runs the RYA Active Marina. “If your marina is signed up to the programme, you and your crew could have the opportunity take part in practical training sessions with your local training centre. Just ask your marina and they should be able to point you to a suitable local venue.” Guy continued. This could typically include topics such as basic diesel engine checks, how to better understand your radar, weather forecasting, VHF/DSC refresher, basic boat electrics, local navigation and pilotage and basic rig checks and others.

FANCY SOME COMPANY?

Cruising in company is a fantastic way to tackle those visits to local harbours or rivers that may currently seem a little daunting, or even for a first time channel crossing. Guy explained: “Even experienced skippers can benefit from the experience and knowledge of others. It is also a great way to meet and spend time with families and crews, and in some marinas these kind of events have led to the development of an informal and ‘virtual club’ feel, which is a bonus.” You have got the boat, you are a regular down at the marina and you have enjoyed stretching your sea legs around the British coast. But for some, even relatively experienced sailors, taking the next step over the Channel, and beyond, for example, can prove a little daunting. A fear of the unknown could be stifling the possibilities for exploration and adventure being a boat owner can bring. Once again, this year RYA Active Marina teamed up with the World Cruising Club for the second edition of ARC Channel Islands, a week long cruise exploring Cherbourg, Guernsey and Alderney leaving from Gosport. The aim of the rally was to encourage boat owners to sail beyond their normal cruising areas and to gain confidence taking their boats to unfamiliar destinations or longer passages. With a senior instructor and team from World Cruising Club sailing on board the lead boat, those sailing were offered guidance and help with planning the

passages. They also enjoyed social events and sightseeing in each of the ports. “I have done a few rallies and the big difference with the ARC Channel Islands cruise was that everyone had the same common goal: to get experience as a skipper managing the boat on an extended cruise in challenging waters,” said Pete from Legato, summing up his time with the rally. “These were some of the nicest people I have ever met on a rally. We all got on so well. We have made new friends and all come away better sailors. What more can you ask for?”

LADIES DAYS

In addition to the typical refresher sessions and social events, Active Marinas often run Ladies Days too. These comprise of morning or afternoon workshops which aim to increase skills and confidence in boat handing, manoeuvring and berthing techniques for women. It is also an ideal opportunity to socialise with other female boaters with many sessions finishing with a catch up over lunch. Speaking after a Ladies Day at Queen Anne Battery, participant Claire Woodend said: “It is very good because often when you are with your partner you tend to have fixed ideas and roles, but if you can go out with other people you can learn other things.”

THE marina has 140 berths which include seven jet ski docks, and it can accommodate motor/yachts from 5m up to 20m. The majority of the berths are finger berths with one section of alongside type berthing. They all have electricity and water. While there are no lift out facilities, they have an arrangement with Drivers Wharf Boatyard who offer a discount to berth holders. There are liveaboards at the marina who are charged a residential surcharge to cover the extra use of the facilities.

The nearest chandlery is Force 4 at Shamrock Quay, which is a 10 minute bike ride. There is a Co-op supermarket five minutes away and stocks all the usual produce needed for the weekend. PREMIER Marinas will be investing over £11m in its marinas over the coming 12 months. Alongside continuing to invest in its marina infrastructures and boatyards, Premier has earmarked £7.5m in 2018 for the start of a £75m project involving the redevelopment of its Noss on Dart Marina. Noss was acquired in 2016, and Premier is in the midst of applying for planning permission to redevelop the 37 acre site. Premier is aiming to begin the project with the redevelopment and expansion of the marina to include 232 berths, a new boatyard, a hardstanding for up to 100 boats and a new dry stack.

Also within the plan is provision for new marina facilities, a marina reception, 21 offices and workshops for marine services and a new home for South Devon College’s marine trades courses. The planning application also provides for a 50 room hotel, two restaurants, a spa and 39 residential units. BEDS on Board and MDL Marinas have announced the world’s first partnership between the sharing economy and a marina group. This announcement, made at the Southampton Boat Show, will allow MDL members to rent out their boats to overnight guests. HUNDREDS of people went along to Birdham Pool Marinas’ Classic Boat Festival. Visitors were able to view classic boats, cars and motorbikes, while entertainment included a local choir, bands and a solo saxophonist. Celebrating its 80th anniversary, Birdham Pool Marina has undergone many improvements over the last two years. The new decked boardwalk, recently erected alongside the marina, allowed visitors a great view over the marina and classic boats.

EXTENSION AT WINDERMERE QUAYS

WORK has been completed on the key phase of a major refurbishment and extension programme at Windermere Quays Marina in the Lake District National Park. The project involved the reconfiguration of the existing marina into a new layout together with the addition of new pontoons

to provide additional berthing space. The existing Walcon System 21 finger pontoons and piers were refurbished before being redeployed. Wave-attenuating pontoons were also added at either end of the marina to provide protection to the boats within. Other aspects of the project included the extraction

of the existing piles and the driving of new ones to conform with the new layout. The swinging moorings were also relocated and the electrical and water provision on the pontoons refurbished. “The increasing size of boats on Windermere as well as greater overall demand required us to update our marina,” said Grahame Armer, managing director of Windermere Aquatics, the parent company of Windermere Quays Marina. “Working with Walcon and Marina Projects we have increased the number of berths from 184 to 260, with an emphasis on having more capacity for 30 - 50ft boats. The footprint including the moorings has doubled, to allow more space for the larger boats to manoeuvre.” www.walconmarine.com

NEVER TOO LATE From complete boating novices to sailing the Atlantic - what is next for the Ronnies?

ith more and more people living longer, active lives and many choosing to work less or stop working earlier, it is a great opportunity to take up a new activity in later life. Many people have the dream of buying a boat and sailing away over the horizon for the adventure of a lifetime. There is no reason why that should not be possible. Starting any new activity as a couple can seem a little daunting, especially if you feel surrounded by people who have been doing it all their lives. If one partner has done some sailing previously, this can also lead to an imbalance in relations and tensions afloat. This is where getting some good quality training to master the basics can help fast track you both through the learning curve, and develop the skill sets of each individual. Learning the same principles and processes helps you work together as a team too, and can also help highlight each other’s strengths. Some people are natural navigators whilst others are natural helmsmen, and have better feel or concentration.

Whether your goal is to ultimately set off across the oceans or sail closer to home you can save yourself time and money by investing in good coaching, and then build your experience from there. There is a well-recognised, structured training pathway offered through RYA courses, starting with RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper and leading up to the more advanced RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster qualifications. These courses are offered by Recognised RYA Sailing Schools, which have been accredited and regularly re-assessed by the RYA. The initial courses cover all the important ‘building blocks’, including handling the boat, safety procedures, essential navigation and rules of the road. Just like learning to drive, though, once you have done the course it is important to get out afloat and put your learning into practice, and gain experience from doing it yourself.

With any new activity, there is no substitute for time spent doing it, having some fun and learning from mistakes and from the people around you. This can be gained in various ways, such as signing up for some mile-building courses with a professional skipper on hand to help or taking berths on a chartered yacht. Joining a club and getting to sail with other members on their boats is another route. You may wish to start with your own boat. Many couples prefer this route since being afloat is as much about quality time together at beautiful destinations as it is the sailing to get there. There are schemes where you can charter or time-share a boat, or you may wish to buy your own. Particularly if you are new to sailing, buying from a dealer who can give you on going support, be it maintenance, training or helping charter your boat to cover costs, might be a good route to consider.

Julian and Lyn Ronnie came to sailing about 10 years ago. They took a sailing holiday in Majorca, where Julian gained his RYA Competent Crew. Subsequently, they chartered a boat a couple of times with a professional skipper on board, which they found helped to develop their experience. Expert help was at hand whenever they needed input and advice. On another holiday in Lanzarote with Sunsail Julian gained his RYA Day Skipper. This meant he could skipper a boat on a flotilla sailing holiday, and their next step was a holiday in Croatia and the BVIs. After trying sailing holidays, the couple bought a Beneteau 31, to see if they liked the idea of sailing on their own and the freedom of owning their own boat. They did. Within six months they hatched a plan to sail across the Atlantic, cruise around the Caribbean and the East Coast of America. They bought Domini, a Sun Odyssey 439 and signed up for the ARC Rally, some 18 months away. The couple had already done some initial own boat training at Universal Yachting in Hamble and returned again with Domini. This meant they could focus in on the exact areas where they both

felt in need personal skill development, such as berthing, sailing trimming and safety procedures. At the same time Julian also gained his RYA Coastal Skipper qualification.

JULIAN’S STORY

Julian takes up the story: “Universal Yachting were fundamental to what we did as they helped find the boat, kit it out for us, do our training and more. Chris Warwick, principal at Universal Yachting, kept us on the road whilst we were out there cruising. He was always there for us by phone or email when we needed help. “We did a number of RYA courses with them, including Day Skipper for Lyn and Coastal Skipper for me. The great thing was that we were able to do it on our own boat with just the two of us on board, plus our instructor. “Doing it this way meant that nothing we learnt was simply theoretical or suitable for a different boat or with more crew. Everything we were taught applied directly to us. And, of course, with such direct one-to-one supervision we could cover much more detail outside of the RYA syllabus. “Clive Vaughan, our instructor, was able to show us MOB procedures for doublehanded sailors (of course you are singlehanded if one of you is over the side). Fortunately, we have not needed that one! “We also covered picking up mooring buoys and berthing short-handed, and even putting up the cruising chute. When you are learning to sail, nothing of course beats sheer experience and hours at sea, but doing these courses certainly speeded up the process.” Having never sailed as youngsters, the Ronnie’s set sail in September 2014. They sailed from the UK to the Canaries via Morocco, then completed the ARC Rally to St Lucia. They mooched around the Caribbean for a season and then sailed up the East Coast of the United States taking in New York and Boston before sailing back to the Caribbean. Domini came home on a ship and Julian and Lyn came back in style on the Queen Mary. The Ronnies are hoping to undertake a circumnavigation as their next adventure. Waitrose says its regional gin sales are up 50 per cent in their stores and they are looking for more new local brands to stock. Regional means being stocked in a limited number of stores close to where the spirit is made, so not every gin in every shop. With so many gins now in production we can expect more of this pre-selection in supermarkets, but perhaps less so in specialist wine retailers. So keep your eyes on them too.

OCTOBER is the month for Trafalgar Day events; 21 October was the actual day of the 1805 victory. At the annual Great British Beer Festival at Olympia, London, back in August, I kept an eye out for something appropriate for Trafalgar events and found Nelson’s Eye from the Heavy Industry Brewery Denbighshire, North Wales. A new brewery to me, I gave Nelson’s Eye an extended tasting appraisal, especially as over the last three years it has won various beer competitions. At 4.5 per cent abv, it is a distinctive golden ale dry hopped with imported Nelson Sauvin hops, which are unique to New Zealand and give a hint of grape and citrus. At first impression it tastes a bit sour, but this is intentional to make it a predinner ‘sharpener’ and the flavour grows on you as the palate begins to noticeably tingle! (www.heavyindustrybrewing.com) Not at the festival but well established in the heart of the Historic Dockyard at Chatham, Kent is the Nelson Brewery. Their appropriate brew and flagship brand is Admiral IPA. At four per cent, it is a traditional IPA brewed with Kentish Cascade hops, giving a dry and citrus flavour. Gin among the beers

Such is the impact of the continuing new ‘craft’ or ‘artisanal’ gins phenomenon on the drinks trade at large that, among over 900 beers at the Beer Festival, for the first time there was a stand promoting a gin - Fishers London Dry. A bit of a hybrid, this one, it is distilled by Adnams, Southwold along with their beers and other spirits. The botanicals recipe focuses on capturing the wild and forgotten flavours of England’s East Anglian coastline. These include samphire, seaweed, bog myrtle 2 5 (once used in ale to make it bitter before the introduction of hops back in 1500AD and when distilled on its own as 8 3 an insect repellent) and spignal (a highly aromatic herb 1 in the parsley family), plus the required juniper to qualify 7
