While there were celebrations for the British team at the Para World Sailing Championships with a gold medal for Will Street and Jonathan Currell in the RS Venture, there was a huge setback for Para World Sailing with the news that sailing will not be included at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. However, although Para Sailing will not feature at the Paris Games, it is clear the sport still has a bright future. FULL STORY PAGE 4

GGR SAILORS RESCUED AFTER SEVERE STORM Abhilash Tomy. Image: Abhilash Tomy/PPL/GGR

SERIOUSLY injured Indian Golden Globe Race solo sailor Abhilash Tomy had to be rescued from his dismasted yacht Thuriya approximately 1,900 miles SW of Perth, Western Australia. Abhilash, a Commander in the Indian Navy, had been confined to his bunk, unable to move, after his yacht was rolled through 360° and dismasted in a vicious Southern Ocean storm. Three days later the French fisheries patrol vessel Osiris, which carries medical support, reached Abhilash’s yacht and her crew successfully transferred him to the ship. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Canberra, which co-ordinated the rescue, reported: “Tomy is conscious, talking and on board the Orisis.” Abhilash was moved ashore at Amsterdam Island for a full medical check where X-ray scans showed he had suffered some damage to his back but the results were “not too bad”. Capt. Dilip Donde, Abhilash Tomy’s manager, reported that Thuriya’s skipper could stand and was eating and drinking, but required complete rest. At the time of writing he was waiting to be transferred to the Indian Navy Frigate INS Satpura before returning to India.

Commander Abhilash Tomy, reported by Indian NavyTweet, said: “The sea was unbelievably rough. Me and my boat Thuriya were pitched against nature’s might. I survived because of my sailing skills, the soldier bit in me and my Naval training cut-in for that fight - very thankful to Indian Navy and all who rescued me.” A multinational search operation had been under way to rescue the injured sailor following an initial message stating simply: ROLLED. DISMASTED. SEVERE BACK INJURY. CANNOT GET UP. Don McIntyre, the Race Chairman based in Les Sables d’Olonne where the Golden Globe solo non-stop round the world race began on 1 July, said: “We are very grateful to all these international organisations for mobilising their resources so quickly and for the lead role taken by MRCC in Canberra.” The position of Tomy’s yacht Thuriya, a replica of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s yacht Suhail, winner of the first GGR 50 years ago, was 1,900 miles south west of Perth at the extreme limit of immediate rescue range. An Indian P8 Orion military plane out of Mauritius overflew Thuriya to assess the yacht’s condition. Photographs taken by the crew showed the yacht dismasted with her rig still attached to the hull acting as a sea anchor, and slowing her drift westwards. Abhilash, who reported severe back injuries, was unable to move from his bunk, but heard the plane fly overhead and acknowledged this by turning his emergency beacon off and on. The 39-year-old Indian yachtsman had been lying in third place in the Golden Globe Race when he and fellow competitor, Irishman Gregor McGuckin were overtaken by a 70 knot storm and 15m seas. Following the storm the 32-yearold Irishman managed to build a jury rig

GREAT CIRCLE CORNISH Bard, Nick Hart is to stage a new production, Great Circle, at the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth on 24 November. Celebrating 50 years since the original Golden Globe Race, Great Circle is a production inspired by three legendary participants: Sir Robin KnoxJohnston, Donald Crowhurst

and Bernard Moitessier. It represents the psychology, triumph and tragedy of solo circumnavigation in this inaugural attempt to achieve the world record of sailing single-handed, non-stop around the Globe. A choral representation of the psychological turmoil of contestants and their families

September was a big month for Maiden. Not only did she set sail on a historic three year global tour from the Southampton Boat Show, but a documentary about Maiden premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Maiden is a feature length documentary recounting the story of Tracy Edwards and the first ever all-female crew taking part in the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.

McGuckin did not declare an emergency for his own situation despite being rolled over and losing his mast. However, given the extremely remote location and the condition of his yacht, it was deemed the appropriate course of action to abandon his yacht under a controlled evacuation scenario when the opportunity arose. Gregor McGuckin was therefore rescued later the same day. The storm also twice knocked down the yacht of second placed Dutchman Mark Slats. Mark was excused from turning back to assist in the rescue. He was still

will be performed by the Canoryon Lowen choir, with guest performances from the Cornish duo Katie Kirk and Rick Williams, with their own interpretation of the songs of separation written by Nick Hart. Nick Hart, himself an accomplished sailor, said: “The 1968 Golden Globe Race goes down in history for the toll it had on competitors, for the loneliness and reflection of being at sea for ten months,

facing 40-knot winds and 15m seas and was washed overboard during one of several knockdowns, but was saved by his safety tether. He reported that he had never seen conditions as bad. One wave crashed down on his boat Ophen Maverick, smashed through the companionway washboards and flooded the yacht’s electrics causing a small fire, which was quickly extinguished. The Golden Globe Race continues with the top three spots taken by Jean-Luc van den Heede, Mark Slats and Uku Randmaa respectively. Britain’s Susie Goodall is just behind in fourth. With eight competitors remaining, the race is due to finish at Les Sable d’Olonne in late February/early March 2019. goldengloberace.com

SPOTTED!

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was spotted with his boat Suhaili at the Southampton Boat Show

DID you go along to last month’s Southampton Boat Show? We would love to hear your thoughts on the show, which saw many boat debuts and new kit launched. The stunning boats on show included the gorgeous Fairline Targa 43 Open, Princess R35 and Grand Soleil 34. On board Tall Ship Kaskelot it was Sir Robin Knox Johnston and Miranda Krestovnikoff who performed the official opening of the 50th anniversary of the Southampton Boat Show. Sir Robin could also be seen on board his famous yacht Suhaili in the marina (see the photo above). Another famous name who put in an appearance at the show, this time from the world of music, was Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran. The singer arrived at the show aboard a Sunseeker motor yacht in his role as an ambassador for the Blue Marine Foundation, which is working to rid the oceans of plastic. Plastic being a huge topic at the moment, the show’s title sponsors TheYachtMarket.com also launched their Ocean Saviour marine conservation project. This self-powering catamaran is a clean-up vessel that will retrieve and recycle plastic from the ocean with an aim to remove plastic from the ocean before it breaks down into microplastics. There were also plenty of engines – both large and small – on display at Southampton. Turn to page 17 to read Simon Everett’s comprehensive round-up.

Engines, the electric ones, are still getting you all talking, as you will see when you read this month’s reader letters on page 16. This month we also have a handy tip to combat diesel bug from one reader, and we would love to hear more of your projects and advice. Keep the letters coming on these, and any other, marine topics. Your suggestions might relate to boating holidays too. One of the best ways to find the perfect holiday is often to chat to other boaters and discover where they have been and, more importantly, where they would and would not return to. Sometimes it can be something as simple as finding out which questions to ask the holiday company when booking. Either way, now is a great time to book for 2019 and make the most of early booking deals; give yourself something to look forward to as the dark nights draw in. I must mention the incredibly brave Golden Globe Race sailor Abhilash Tomy who suffered a back injury during a severe storm in in the South Indian Ocean. The main mast of his boat was ripped off in the storm, and it was three days before he was rescued. This is a stark reminder of the dangers these sailors face when taking on challenges such as the GGR. Of the 18 racers who began the 30,000 mile race, just eight now remain. We wish them all the very best of luck for the remainder of the race. Jane Hyde, Editor

SAILING MISSES OUT ON PARIS 2024

SAILING has not been included by the International Paralympic Committee for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. World Sailing was informed by the IPC that sailing is not in compliance with one or more of the core criteria for Games inclusion as stipulated in the IPC Handbook. The IPC Handbook states: “For Paralympic Games only individual sports and disciplines widely and regularly practiced in a minimum of 32 countries and three IPC regions may be considered for inclusion in the Paralympic Games.” “We worked tirelessly to ensure sailing met the IPC criteria and our application was of a high standard and everyone at World Sailing is deeply saddened by the news from the IPC,” said Andy Hunt, World Sailing CEO. “Sailing is one of the most inclusive sports and caters for all athletes. Regardless of their classification, sailing’s athletes compete on a level playing field and we have reiterated this message to the IPC. “So much has been achieved over the past few years in developing Para World Sailing and we will continue to provide a program of events for the sailors that compete regularly at a national and international level.” The announcement came as a surprise to the RYA, which has worked tirelessly to

support World Sailing’s bid for re-inclusion. Sarah Treseder, Chief Executive of the RYA, said: “We are deeply disappointed that the IPC has made this decision despite all the progress and the unique platform sailing provides for true equality and inclusion. “The decision is a real blow for so many aspiring and talented sailors for whom competing in Paris has been their dream, not to mention all those who would have been inspired to get on the water by sailing’s inclusion. It is a really sad day for the sport. The RYA has worked closely with World Sailing in support of their bid for re-inclusion and we will now take time to reflect on the IPC’s decision.” Regardless of the announcement the RYA remains committed to supporting all disabled sailors through its groundbreaking Sailability community programme. Great Britain is among the most successful nations in Paralympic sailing. Helena Lucas won the nation’s first gold medal in sailing at London 2012 in the 2.4mR class, and followed it up with a bronze at Rio 2016. Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell got bronze medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016 in the SKUD class. Sailing was removed from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Sports Programme in January 2015 for failing to meet worldwide

reach criteria. Following this news, World Sailing released a strategic plan for 2017-2020, outlining strategic goals and strategies that were adopted by World Sailing to gain re-inclusion into the Paralympic Games sports program. At the 2017 and 2018 World Championships, World Sailing demonstrated that it met and exceeded the worldwide reach criteria and worked in close partnership with Member National Authorities, Class Associations, Event Organisers and sailors to ensure the best possible application to the IPC. At the 2018 Para World Sailing Championships, a record 101 sailors from 42 nations registered to race across four events in September in Wisconsin. In addition, at the next Sailing World Championships, to be held in The Hague, The Netherlands in 2022, the Para World Sailing Championships will be integrated for the first time. Despite this setback for the discipline, World Sailing will continue to support the sailors as well as grow and promote Para World Sailing globally. Golf, karate, Para dance sport and powerchair football were also struck from the list of potential sports at Paris 2024, while bobsleigh was dropped from the 2022 Winter Paralympics despite being provisionally approved.

BRINGING HOME THE MEDALS

BRITISH Finn sailors Giles Scott and Ed Wright scooped silver and bronze medals on the Olympic waters of Enoshima while Elliot Hanson was crowned Laser champion. Rio 2016 gold medallist Giles and European champion Ed started the final day of the World Cup Series Enoshima in second and third, but a lack of wind in Enoshima, the venue for the Tokyo 2020 sailing competition, meant the medal race could not go ahead – and the Brits were denied the shot at glory. However, it was a solid return to the Olympic circuit for Giles, who has not raced his Finn since April. The scores took Britain’s medal haul to two golds – courtesy of Elliot and 49er pair James Peters and Fynn Sterritt – plus Giles’s silver and Ed’s bronze. For Elliot, in the Laser fleet, officials did manage to get a race in – but with an enormous 43-point overnight lead the result was immaterial to the Brit Elliot finished sixth on the water but it did not make any difference to the standings. The victory is his fourth medal since returning from injury in May. Elliot said: “That is a great confidence boost going into the next two years. As a British squad we are so strong and it is going to be tough just to qualify for the Games. “This result certainly is not the be all and end all but it is a great boost.” Read more about the team on page 20. www.rya.org.uk

AUSTRALIAN, British and Brazilian competitors clinched gold at the Para World Sailing Championships as the regatta drew to a close in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. After five days of competition in variable breeze, Matt Bugg (AUS) snapped up gold after the first ever 2.4 Norlin OD Medal Race, Will Street and Jonathan Currell (GBR) won a close RS Venture Connect final and Christopher Symonds (AUS) and Ana Paula Marques (BRA) grabbed gold in the Men’s and Women’s Hansa 303. Following a strong performance in the qualification races, British Paralympians Hannah Stodel and Alexandra Rickham led the group into the winner-takes-all final. They

were joined by Spain’s Enrique Vives and Gabriel Barroso de Maria, John McRoberts and Scott Lutes (CAN), as well as Will Street and Jonathan Currell (GBR) on the start line for the final. However it was Will and Jonathan who sailed to victory, while Hannah and Alexandra took fourth. For the other sailors in Team GBR, 16 year-old Rory McKinna came 14th overall in the Men’s Hansa 303, with Carole Dugdale finishing 17th in the 2.4 Norlin OD. The next Para World Sailing Championships will be held in Puerto Sherry, Spain in June 2019. 98 sailors from 39 nations came together in Sheboygan, a celebration of the best-of-the-best and a showcase of Para-Sailing. Following the recent news that sailing will not be reinstated for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, it is more important than ever to get behind our sailors. The RYA continues to ensure that disabled sailing is supported from grassroots to toplevel racing. To find out how you can get involved in disabled sailing visit rya.org.uk/go/sailability.

NATASHA Lambert BEM has announced the start of her next expedition, to cross the Atlantic as part of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) 2019. In order to complete this challenge Natasha has taken command of her new boat, a Nautitech Open 46 from Key Yachting, which was launched at the Southampton Boat Show. Natasha will be controlling the sheets and steering by simply sipping and puffing through a single straw.

Natasha has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy which means that she has no voluntary control over her limbs and difficulty in articulating speech. Her father, Gary, has developed the Sip Puff technology that allows Natasha to control the boat using her breath to either turn the rudders or trim the sails. This has enabled Natasha to take on some incredible challenges over the years including crossing the English Channel. This next big challenge, in November, will be the biggest

undertaken and will create a few noteworthy firsts for Natasha including being the first quadriplegic female skipper to cross the Atlantic using breath control. It will also be the longest crossing made using breath control and is the largest vessel adapted to use breath control. Natasha will be taking on a steadily increasing training regime to ensure that she is fit for the challenge and that the boat modifications are fully working. www.missisle.com

THE FIGHT AGAINST PLASTIC CONTINUES

THE government has announced plans to extend the single-use plastic bag charge to all retailers and increase the minimum charge to at least 10p, subject to consultation. It is estimated more than 3.4 billion single-use plastic bags are supplied annually by SMEs. Trade bodies representing 40,000 small retailers have already launched a voluntarily approach to a 5p charge, but this accounts for less than one-fifth of England’s estimated 220,000 SMEs. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said: “We are committed to being a global leader in tackling plastic pollution. It blights our seas and land and chokes our wildlife. Thanks to the public’s support, our plastic bag charge has been hugely successful. It has taken 13 billion plastic bags out of circulation in the last two years alone.” The move follows the success of the 5p charge introduced in 2015, which has seen plastic bag sales in major supermarkets drop by 86 per cent. This is equivalent to just 19 bags in 2016/17 per person in England, compared with 140 bags each before the government introduced the charge. Government scientists believe plastic in the sea is set to treble in a decade unless marine litter is curbed - with one million birds and more than 100,000 sea mammals dying every year from eating and getting tangled in plastic waste. The government has announced a range

of measures to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste including a world-leading ban on microbeads and plans to explore plastic free aisles in supermarkets. Earlier this year the government announced its intention to ban the sale of plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds, as well as plans for a deposit return scheme to increase recycling rates of drinks bottles and cans subject to consultation.

SCOUTS TAKE ON PLASTIC

Young people across the country will join together to tackle plastic pollution through a new partnership between the UK Scouts and government. Harnessing the enthusiasm of the UK’s girl and boy Scouts, the government will create and distribute a new Plastics and Marine Environment Activity Pack to help them in efforts to slash the amount of single-use plastics in our oceans. Recognising the need for global action, this toolkit will be supported by a new international exchange programme, allowing Scouts from the UK and Kenya to visit one another and learn how important the issue of plastics is in different parts of the world.

OCEAN SAVIOUR OCEAN Saviour is a world-first, selfpowering 70m tri-deck clean-up vessel, purposefully engineered to locate, retrieve and recycle plastic from the ocean. Ocean Saviour is the brainchild of Richard Roberts and Simon White, founders of TheYachtMarket.com who were, like many of us, left devastated by the BBC Blue Planet series. Richard and Simon began throwing around some ideas with some of the world’s top naval architects and yacht designers in an attempt to look at new ways to bring together existing technologies to tackle the problem.

DID YOU KNOW?

QUOTE OF THE MONTH NEWS SNAPS

Just a few months later, the Ocean Saviour project has begun to take shape and is working in conjunction with several organisations and figures from across the global marine industry including Dee Caffari MBE and Mike Golding OBE. Dr. Andrew Baglin of Multiphase Design, said: “We produce approximately 300 million tonnes of plastic each year, five times what we produced 50 years ago, and an estimated eight million tonnes of this ends up in our oceans every year. “A single Ocean Saviour vessel aims to clear five tonnes of plastic per day, that is nearly two kilotonnes per year. This would mean that one Ocean Saviour vessel would take 40 years to clean up the Pacific gyre using plasma technology, which can therefore be scaled if there was more than one vessel in operation.”

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between California and Hawaii, contains an estimated 80,000 tonnes of plastic, equating to over five trillion pieces of plastic currently litter the ocean

“It is about time that the people who get the most out of the sea and use the sea the most, actually do something about the issues it faces.” Simon Le Bon, Duran Duran

The Southern Daily Echo reported that Sam Allpass made a boat out of 350 plastic milk cartons before taking his maiden voyage from Ventnor Haven across Ventnor Bay. The boat will be used to raise awareness of plastic pollution.

LEAD singer of Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon, officially opened the Sunseeker stand and BLUE exhibition space at the Southampton Boat Show. Simon is a long-serving ambassador of The Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE), and during the show Sunseeker showcased its commitment to marine conservation with an immersive exhibition experience that demonstrated the importance of protecting the marine environment for future generations. Since 2017, Sunseeker has partnered with BLUE and has recently launched its first campaign Project Menorca, a marine conservation programme that

will focus on improving and protecting the island’s marine environment. Simon said: “The sea is a beautiful thing. We all grew up thinking it was perfect, pristine and it would always stay that way. However, now we are starting to see the reality of humanity’s impact on the world’s waters. It is a disaster unfolding before our eyes. “If we want to preserve the living seas, we have a lot of work to do and it heartens me to see brands like Sunseeker working really hard to raise awareness and implement projects that will help us in our endeavour.” www.sunseeker.com/blue

Emirates Team New Zealand revealed the prototype test jig for the AC75 foil cant system. Within the 36th America’s Cup Protocol both the foil arm and the foil cant system are one design ‘supplied parts’ that all teams will use. ETNZ has taken on the design and supply of the hydraulic side of the cant system and Luna Rossa are in charge of the design and supply of the composite foil arm. The foil cant system is the foundation for the AC75 which relies on the use of twin canting T-foils, ballasted to provide righting-moment when sailing and roll stability at low speed.

NEW DATE FOR FASTNET

SCARAMOUCHE, the yacht which sailed to fame with Greig City Academy during the Rolex Fastnet Race 2017, was on display at the Southampton Boat Show. The crew’s achievements have been recognised by RORC, the RYA, royalty and event organisers. Earlier this year, the crew were guests of Antigua Race Week, competing in the event alongside the Y2K Programme in a Cork 1720. Now, Montel Fagan-Jordan is gaining work experience with Alex Thomson Racing, while Camilo Orobio has been competing on Redshift Reloaded with mentoring from David Carr. The Scaramouche Sailing Project has three goals: to introduce sailing to the pupils of Greig City Academy, to provide a pathway to enable sailing as

a lifelong interest and to make known the diversity of sailing opportunities available to schools. “These three goals are pivotal in what we do going forward,” explained Jon Holt, founder of the project and head of geography at Greig City Academy. “We have a growing fleet of boats, and it is important that we support the project at all levels, from grassroots, up to the elite sailors on professional campaigns.” Being involved in the project has changed the lives of those at the school - all Year 13 students involved in the Scaramouche project won places at their first-choice universities. Jon is keen to show that if an inner-city academy from London can achieve this, anyone can. www.gofundme.com/scaramouche

THE 2019 edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race will start on 3 August 2019, which is two weeks earlier than the original published date. Unusually, the race will now run the week before Lendy Cowes Week, whose dates remain unchanged, starting on 10 August. This break with tradition, in consultation with Cowes Week, has been made for a number of reasons, including weather concerns over late August. “We have been wrestling with this decision over the summer and particularly the relative timing with other events in Cowes and the Solent,” said RORC Commodore Steven Anderson. “A late August start has weather implications for our big fleet and we

anticipated running into the summer bank holiday would cause difficulty for many participants. Bringing the race forward by two weeks addresses these issues and allows us to encourage the fleet into Cowes in the pre-race days before the start.” Commenting on the change of date, RORC Racing Manager Chris Stone said: “Bringing the race forward to 3 August will give more time for those competitors who wish to race in Lendy Cowes Week. The prize giving in Plymouth will now be held on 8 August and this will allow competitors to make the journey back to the Solent in time to join the racing.” www.rolexfastnetrace.com Image: Facanv/Shutterstock

CELEBRATING MAYFLOWER Mayflower at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Image: Spiroview Inc/Shutterstock

THE government has announced an additional £250,000 grant in support of the Mayflower 400 commemorations, which will mark the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing on 16 September 2020. The Mayflower left Plymouth on 16 September 1620 (according to the Gregorian calendar), arriving 56 days later on 11 November in Cape Cod on the East Coast of the United States. Approximately 35 million Americans today trace their ancestry to a Mayflower passenger. The funding will be used to promote and encourage American visitors to join the anniversary in England and to develop a ‘digital Mayflower trail’ which will bring to life individual stories, heritage and culture of each location involved in the commemorations. This is expected to be launched in November 2019. The sailing of the Mayflower is celebrated by many in the United States

as the beginning of a national legacy, and in the UK as the beginning of an enduring alliance. Plymouth is leading a national partnership of 11 destinations within England which are currently developing a year-long programme of cultural events and activities as part of the anniversary. Plymouth itself is undergoing a major transformation that will bring commercial and cultural opportunities to the city on a scale not seen since its rebuilding after the end of the Second World War. The Mayflower 400 commemorations will form the main part of a wider, year-long national and international cultural programme connecting England, the United States, the native American Nation and the Netherlands in the fournation commemoration. www.mayflower400uk.org

According to Portsmouth’s The News, after the withdrawal of vital lottery funding, plans for a multi-million pound Royal Marines Museum are up in the air. Although £433,500 was offered in 2016, the Heritage Lottery Fund will now not pay the £12.9m for the National Museum of the Royal Navy’s SeaMore project. Although the museum had been expected to reopen in 2020, this has been pushed back to 2022 at the earliest. Professor Dominic Tweddle, NMRN director general, said: “The message is simple; we have £5m and need £5m more to open the new museum.”

BARRUS CORRECTION Last month All at Sea ran a story stating that Sailforce was to represent Talamex and Besto Lifesavers as part of Barrus’ new Chandlery Distribution Division. Regrettably this information was incorrect. SailForce will represent Talamex products only. Barrus has the distribution rights for Talamex and Besto Lifesavers and these brands join Barrus’ existing portfolio of marine brands which includes Mercury and Yanmar engines, Mariner outboard motors and Quicksilver boats. Barrus would like to apologise for any confusion and embarrassment caused by this error.

Emirates Team New Zealand CEO, Grant Dalton has officially named Auckland as the venue for the 36th America’s Cup Match Presented by Prada. He also announced that racing will take place between 6 - 21 March 2021. The Defender, ETNZ, will race against the winner of the Prada Cup, the Challenger Selection Series, in a best of 13 in the America’s Cup Match. This will be preceded by an America’s Cup World Series in in 2019 and 2020 and also a Christmas Race 2020 in Auckland. TROPHY DELAY

In further Cup news, despite recently celebrating the one-year anniversary of Emirate Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup victory, for the past year there has been no reference to the Kiwi’s 2017 win on the cup because there was no room. The Auld Mug finally returned to Garrad & Co for a tier replacement that has at last enabled the trophy to be updated.

CLIPPER GOLD

The Clipper Race has announced Musto as its new Technical Clothing Partner for the next two event editions. The partnership marks a transformation for the event as it will be swapping its familiar red kit for a new gold look. With more than 400 crew already signed up for next year’s challenge, extensive training is already underway. The Clipper 201920 Race will start in the summer.

ERITH CELEBRATES IN January, Lee Spencer, The Rowing Marine, was preparing for his solo and unsupported row from continental Europe to continental America for a new Guinness World Record, challenging the perceptions around disabilities. His voyage did not set off due to family circumstances, but the row is back on. Lee will become the world’s first physically disabled person to row the Atlantic, leaving from Gibraltar on 12 December. Lee will also attempt to beat the current able bodied record of 96 days, 12 hours and 45 minutes, gaining a second Guinness World Record. Born in Dagenham, Lee now lives in Devon and after 24 years as a Royal

Marine and three operational tours of Afghanistan, Lee lost his right leg when he stopped to help a motorist on the M3 in 2014. Lee was hit by flying debris and his right leg was severed in the impact. The double Guinness World Record attempt will raise awareness and money for the Royal Marines Charity and the Endeavour Fund, which supports wounded, injured and sick Service Personnel and Veterans using sport and adventurous challenges as part of their recovery and rehabilitation. RYA YOUTH RIB CHAMPIONSHIP THE National Final of the 2018 Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship took place at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show. In the 8 - 12 age group it was Oban Duncan, from I Powerboat, representing Scotland who blasted her way to the top of the leaderboard and podium. Luke Le Pelley representing the Channel Islands took second place, with George Colquitt, from the North West, taking third. In the 13-16 age group it was Jamie Paterson (pictured) from Findhorn Marina, also representing Scotland, who claimed the winner’s crown. Joe Coutanche from the Channel Islands claimed second just over two seconds behind Jamie, with the South’s Alice Wood took third. Oban received a Honwave T40 RIB with a Honda BF20 engine for her club, as well as a Honda goody bag and £100

worth of Jack Wills vouchers. While in the 13-16 age group Jamie received, again for his club, a Highfield OM460 RIB with a Honda BF50 engine and a Honda goody bag and £100 of Jack Wills vouchers. It was then time to get back out on the water for the Champion of Clubs head-to-head. Tom Rogers, 2017 Honda RYA Youth RIB Champion in the 13-16 age group, representing the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, took on the newly crowned 2018 champion Jamie. Jamie shaved over four seconds off his championship winning time, but it was 2017 Champion Tom who claimed the crown. He also set the fastest ever time in the history of the championship. Now in its 17th year, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is a National Championship that takes place between May and September each year. www.rya.org.uk/go/hondayouthrib

PRINCESS X CLASS

Andy Lawrence, Head of Design, Princess Yachts, added: “X95 takes spatial architecture on a yacht to a new level. With a large cockpit, rear flybridge, forward flybridge and foredeck areas, owners will have four large and unique outdoor environments on an X95. Combined with the spacious and flexible main deck space and the unique Sky Lounge, the X95 has a range of living spaces, indoor and outdoor, that dwarfs those of any other boat of its size.”

DESIGNED with what Princess Yachts calls an ‘open concept’ in mind, the X95 is the first model in Princess Yachts’ new X Class. Challenged with setting a new standard of layout excellence, which is defined by large, adaptable spaces that can be used and formatted in numerous ways, it offers the owner and guests a uniquely flexible boating lifestyle. X95’s interior design allows the owner to define each journey around their guests’ preferences - comfortable and relaxing, high levels of privacy or entertaining and hosting, for example. Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman, Princess Yachts, said: “X95 is another bold new concept for Princess Yachts. Borne from our aggressive investment strategy into new technology and world-class design, the X Class creates an entirely new segment, representing another significant step in our

new product programme. We continue to push the boundaries of yacht design and build a brand leadership position in the luxury yacht market.”

Part of The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, the event was run by volunteers from the three clubs on the river: Dittisham Sailing Club, Dartmouth Yacht Club and the Royal Dart Yacht Club Peter Boote, Joint Regatta Sailing Committee Chairman, said: “Despite the trying conditions with very light winds, the race officers managed to hold races every day. Racing was close and Start Bay had over 100 boats spread across three courses which made a great spectacle.” A highlight was the attendance of Ben Fogle who joined the Dartmouth Sailing Week team at the Royal Dart Yacht Club to give a talk on his recent adventures. www.dartmouthsailingweek.co.uk

THE WAITING GAME

AN ocean racer that had grounded on a sandbank at the entrance to Southampton Water, in strong winds and choppy seas, led to Cowes lifeboat playing an uncomfortable waiting game for two hours, before being joined by Yarmouth lifeboat. The 40ft yacht, with two people aboard, had gone hard aground on to Bramble Bank. Although the RNLI’s Atlantic 85 RIB Sheena Louise lost little time in crossing the Solent it soon became apparent that the crew would have to wait a long time for the tide to rise sufficiently for the

yacht to float free. During the wait it was decided that it would be prudent for Yarmouth’s all-weather more powerful lifeboat to provide on-thescene backup. When a crew member from the yacht radioed to say they had regained full buoyancy the long-awaited tow was carried out. Initially the yacht was towed off the bank by Cowes lifeboat, then the task was taken over by the Yarmouth lifeboat, which delivered the yacht to Cowes Yacht Haven where its hull was inspected for possible damage. www.rnli.org

RECORD NUMBERS THE Cruising Association had a very busy Southampton Boat Show with record numbers visiting their bigger stand and 171 new members signing up. CA General Manager Lucy Gray said: “We are really pleased to have welcomed a record

THE SOLAR CAT

THE ocean going solar-electric catamaran SILENT 55 made her world debut at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The yacht uses silent electric propulsion for unlimited range with no noise or fumes and minimal vibration. She is self-sufficient and virtually maintenance-free. The catamaran is available in several power configurations to suit a variety of cruising applications. Michael Köhler, SILENT-YACHTS CEO,

said: “What this represents to the yachtsman, among other features, is the ability to cruise for many hours at normal speed and throughout the entire day and evening at reduced speed. SILENT-YACHTS sets the standard for an entirely new dynamic in yachting: No fuel. No maintenance. Pure solarpowered luxury.” The catamaran is available in five different layouts ranging from three to six staterooms with three or four heads. www.silent-yachts.com

YOUR LETTERS THE GOBI DRY TANK All at Sea reader Mike Austin shares his solution to the nightmare problem of diesel bug in your fuel tank. Having once been the victim of the dreaded diesel bug, I have taken steps to prevent a recurrence. Water is the single biggest contaminant for fuel. Most water in fuel tanks is as a result of condensation when the tanks heat up during the day and cool at night. The presence of water in your fuel tank can create the ideal conditions for bacteria and fungi to grow. The combination of water, food (fuel) and the typical UK temperatures can mean a ‘diesel bug’ can rapidly spread.

Note the Y valve Mike added below the Dry Tank to allow him to bypass the unit when re-fuelling

Dear AAS With reference to the article by Simon Everett on Going Electric, I consider this article to be the absolute truth and should be understood by every boat owner. Nothing is ever mentioned about the cost of charging these devices. I am unable to add to his observations, as he has covered the subject so well. The same views would also apply to road transport. Reg Stiles Dear Reg, Thank you for your comments. Simon’s article in the August issue (and reader letter last month) has certainly got many of you thinking about the pros and cons of going electric. Keep sending in your comments on this important topic. EXTRACT FROM SIMON’S REPLY LAST MONTH: “Too many people are simply jumping on the bandwagon and falling for the marketing hype that is being perpetrated in an attempt to appear ecologically orientated. Their sentiment is sound, but the practise is far from it.”

WATER SOURCES How can water enter the fuel tank? The three common sources are the fuel you purchase, particularly biodiesel, a leaky filler cap or in the air replacing the fuel used via the tank vent. I replaced my filler cap and, on the advice of my engineer, smear Vaseline over the seal. If you motor on a very humid day, or in fog, the air entering the tank will have a high moisture content and, when the tank cools, the moisture can condense and contaminate the diesel. Mike’s boat, Up To Speed

STAR LETTER

GOING ELECTRIC

There is an additional problem if, depending on the location of your fuel tank, the tank and fuel warm up while motoring and the longer you motor the hotter it gets. There is always moisture in the air even on a sunny day but temperature drops will condensate water. SOLUTION I have discovered and fitted a device, Gobi Dry Tank, to prevent the moisture entering the tank. It works by absorbing moisture in the vent of the tank which otherwise becomes condensate water in the fuel tank. The device contains coloured crystals that absorb water from the air passing through and will eventually change colour as more water is absorbed. Once the crystals are saturated, they can be reactivated by drying the crystals in an oven. The manufacturer estimates this to be an annual maintenance event. The device is fitted into the vent pipe as high as possible to prevent diesel entering the crystals during refuelling. For several years I have made use of a Barton Fuel Whistle, obtainable from most chandlers. As I am refuelling, a loud whistling sound is heard changing to a gurgling sound when diesel enters the whistle, at which point I cease fuelling and prevent an overflow. I have fitted a Y valve with taps so that the Dry Brick can be bypassed during refuelling. This is because the outgoing air had to pass through the crystals thus reducing the rate at which I could refuel and preventing the Barton Whistle from being effective. The base of the device is above the top of the black fuel filler pipe while the white Barton Whistle is well below the neck of the filler. To ease the load on the vent pipe I made a cradle from cable ties.

HOW ABOUT… I have also fitted a Gobi Dry Brick (right), a cordless mini dehumidifier, in each of my cabins. The dehumidifier will absorb moisture until the indicator shows a blackish/green colour. When full, move the device from the space in which it used and connect the included cable to a 230V power outlet. A small radiator (20W) will remove the water overnight. After about 12 - 15 hours the indicator should be gold/orange and the dehumidifier is ready to be used again. I purchased my Gobi Dry Tank for £143.40 and the Dry Bricks for £41.94 each from the UK importer, Danvolt. www.danvolt.co.uk/store www.gobidry.com Next month we will be bringing you an experts column looking in more depth at dehumidifiers. Send your stories, hints, tips, opinions and letters to editor@allatsea.co.uk. You too could be in with a chance of winning!

PLANET B Hi AAS You kindly helped me with my anti sea plastic petition which unfortunately did not get the necessary 100,000 signatures. However it did get me interested in issues, so I have launched a campaigning t-shirt website. Each design has an important story behind it with a call to action. Planet B and Fish are the current environmental ones (ixaha.com/portfolio/planet-b/ and ixaha.com/portfolio/the-fish-story/)

The one I am really keen on is ‘There Is No Planet B’. For me the phrase is powerful, succinct, urgent. It says it all, answering the what, why, when and how. There is also a deadline, a Convention on Climate Change, Poland on 3 - 14 December 2018. You can find out more at http://cop24.gov.pl/. Regards Patrick Dear Patrick A great idea and we wish you the best of luck. It is an issue that we all need to be aware of and it is important that people like yourself take a stand and help to spread the message.

POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTH’S ENGINE NEWS. The world of engines has much news, with new introductions at both ends of the spectrum. The eternal oneup-manship race continues with manufacturers vying for top spot in the outboard horsepower stakes. However, the lighter end of the market is also receiving plenty of research and development budget as this is the end where the most sales are achieved. With no London show diluting the marketing budgets, the engine makers went all out for a big splash on the south coast. I was hoping to bring you news of Yamaha’s unbelievable 425XTO, but it is being launched at Genoa. You will have to wait until next month to get the lowdown on this industry leading leviathan. So, here is the major engine news to come out of the Southampton Boat Show.

HONDA

The outboard engine gauntlet has been picked up by Honda, who have lacked any real development for some years. They had an all new stand, in a new location too, with their four latest engines in pride of place. Yes, really, the big H has released a quadrant of new outboards from 175hp through to 250hp on the same 3.6 litre, V6 platform as the previous BF250, but with several enhancements. The induction system has been refined to provide better airflow, with air filters to prevent dust or moisture entering the intakes. All four models have a versatile range of rigging options, with both mechanical and

BARRUS

Meanwhile, Barrus were displaying the all new Verado range from Mercury to much acclaim. When Bombardier launched their G2 engine to an unsuspecting public in 2014 it completely revolutionised outboard styling; the angular lines and matching colourways of the cowlings were a designer’s dream. The new Verados follow similar angular lines, which are a complete and refreshing departure from the old rounded design, and they also feature neat detailing design touches. Mercury have also employed the V6 format for their line-up of three engines in the Verado family. The lower end of the new Verado spectrum covers 175hp, 200hp and 225hp and are 3.6 litre V6 motors. The two upper end models are V8 models of 4.6 litres and produce 250hp and 300hp respectively. These exciting new outboards are completely new engines, featuring slimmer profiles and narrower gearcases for reduced drag at high speed. Although still carrying the Verado badge they have lost their supercharged nature and are naturally aspirated, but being lighter than their predecessors have gained

SELVA

in power-to-weight. Like the Honda, maintenance jobs have been addressed and a first for any outboard is the maintenance hatch that is incorporated into the cowling to make easy oil checks a matter of simply lifting the small cover without having to remove the entire cowling. The new mid sections have made mounting points wider to reduce vibration and reverberation. Those of a certain age may remember the ‘Captain’s Call’ on sterndrive engines; a similar type of exhaust note control has been incorporated, called Exclusive Advanced Sound Control that keeps noise to a minimum in the marina but allows petrolheads to switch to open throat exhaust note at the flick of a switch.

electrical control available. Maintenance considerations have been addressed, with better location of various filters and the diameter of the oil tube has reduced the servicing time from an hour to just minutes. Attention to longevity has been applied with additional anodes and better coatings, which is why Honda can back their products with a six year leisure use and two year commercial warranty. As if that was not enough, Honda also provide an RYA Powerboat level 2 course with every new outboard from the BF40 upwards. The latest outboards will be available from Honda dealers later this year.

Selva are making small waves with their all new 2.5hp auxiliary or tender engine. This single cylinder motor will be manna from heaven for day sailors and those seeking a properly portable outboard. It has 50 per cent larger capacity than its predecessor, and at 87cc it is the biggest capacity in this class for greater torque and less stress under load. With nearly a litre for the built-in fuel tank the Selva Sea Guppy is still very light and compact, in fact at just

13.5kgs all up weight, including an aluminium propeller, it is the lightest 2.5hp available. When comparing, it is worth checking just what weight is being displayed as many quote the weight without the propeller. Like all Selva outboards it comes with a five year warranty to give you peace of mind. For the upsurge in small inflatable sales, it is perfectly timed to match to a 2.5m sib, for instance and light enough to mount on a guard rail or small enough for on board stowage.

SUZUKI

Suzuki have already announced, but not displayed, their sleek new DF350. The mighty mammoth was conceived on a blank sheet of paper. It is also of the V6 configuration, with a volume of 4390ccs but retains the same compact dimensions as the already proven DF300, which has been around for a decade now. The extra power, up from the DF300’s 75hp / litre to 80hp / litre, comes from those 10 years of development to provide even more refined gas flow and increasing the compression ratio to 12.0 : 1, a first in outboard motors. Other small details all contribute to the increased power without adversely affecting the fuel consumption. The dual, counter rotating propeller system helps to reduce wasted energy and provides more propulsion for the fuel burned. It also makes the boat easier to handle by combating the torque reaction from the prop. As Sir Isaac Newton defined in his laws of motion, his third law states that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, so as the motor is turning the propeller there is a return force trying to spin the boat around the prop. As the power being put through increases, so the effect of the propeller trying to turn the boat over increases and at these tremendous power outputs it becomes very noticeable, especially as the boat leaves the water. The counter rotating props neutralise this effect and allow the boat to track straight.

Suzuki’s flagship model is still slim, making it a possible direct replacement for the DF300, even on multiple rigs. The high horsepower outboard is making big inroads into what was clearcut sterndrive territory. The styling of the Geki is as impressive as the torque and power and while it makes the same power as the Yamaha F350, it does so from a lighter, more compact package.

TOKYO HERE WE COME All the action from the British Sailing Team at Aarhus as they book their places for Tokyo 2020.

J

ob done. That was the assessment from British Sailing Team boss Mark Robinson as Great Britain became the first and only nation to win spots in all 10 Olympic sailing classes for Tokyo 2020 following strong performances at the 2018 Sailing World Championships. The regatta, in Aarhus, Denmark, was the first opportunity for nations to book their places at the next Olympic Games taking place in Japan, which begin in just under two years. In total 40 percent of the quota of places for Tokyo 2020 were up for grabs at the World Championships and the British Sailing Team athletes met the qualification criteria in every class, guaranteeing Britain the opportunity to defend its position at the top of the Olympic sailing medal table. No other nation qualified to compete in every event and they will have to earn their places at other qualification events over the coming year, while the British Sailing Team can concentrate fully on the showpiece event. “In terms of guaranteeing that British sailors will be on the start line of every sailing event at Tokyo 2020, it is job done,” said Mark. “The 2018 Sailing World Championships has been a great success for the British Sailing Team with our sailors making sure the nation is qualified in all 10 classes – something no other country managed. “Britain is the most successful Olympic sailing nation of all time and has topped the sailing medal table in four of the last five Games. “With two years to go until Tokyo 2020, we can now turn our attention to perfecting our skills and processes so that we peak just at the right time.”

LOOKING TO WIN

The Sailing World Championships finished with teenage windsurfing sensation Emma Wilson narrowly missing out on her first senior world championships medal in the women’s RS:X, but British medal success had been confirmed in the few days before. Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre won the first British medal of the championships taking a bronze in the Women’s 470 to take their 2018 medal tally to four. The pair held on to third in a nail-biting finale that saw them battling French duo Camille Lecointre and Aloise Retornaz for a place on the podium.

Elliot Hanson went into the Laser Standard medal race looking to defend or improve on his third-place standing but his bid for a first senior world championship medal suffered a blow when he was penalised early on. The on-water judges ruled that Hanson had illegally rocked his boat on the second leg to gain more speed, and the imposed penalty turn relegated him to the back of the fleet. Despite a valiant attempt at a fight-back Hanson crossed the line in tenth, finishing fifth overall. Team mate and Rio 2016 Olympian Nick Thompson finished eighth overall, while Michael Beckett claimed tenth.

Image: Robert Deaves

OFF THE PODIUM

They fought their way through the 10-boat fleet to finish fourth in the medal race, but their bronze was only confirmed when Lecointre and Retornaz crossed the line in seventh. Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth claimed Great Britain’s second medal, also winning bronze, in the 49er FX class. The medal came less than a month after the duo brought home the same medal from the European championships in Gydnia, Poland. The pair, who only officially teamed up in April this year, went into the final race in second, and halfway round the course looked set to defend their position from the front of the fleet. However, a huge squall hit the 10-boat fleet, sending the wind from a handful of knots to more than 18 in a matter of seconds, and capsizing the race leaders, Austria’s Tanja Frank and Lorena Abicht, in the process. With the breeze swinging by more than 60 degrees and just two legs remaining of the five-leg course, Weguelin and Ainsworth suddenly found themselves scrapping it out in the middle of the pack. With Frank and Abicht relegated to the back of the fleet, the Netherlands’ Annamiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz shot into second, which was enough to give them the overall victory. The Austrian pair took silver, with Weguelin and Ainsworth finishing just three points behind them in third.

STRONG RESULTS

Emma Wilson missed out on her first senior world championships medal. Image: Pedro Martinez/ Sailing Energy/Aarhus 2018

In the 49er James Peters and Fynn Sterritt confirmed their return to the Olympic circuit after a four-month absence taking fifth overall. The duo, last year’s world championship runners up, were side-lined in April when Sterritt picked up a knee injury that required surgery. Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell, the 2017 world champions, finished just two points behind their British Sailing Team compatriots. Alison Young bowed out of the 2018 Sailing World Championships with a Laser Radial medal race victory – her first race win of the regatta in Aarhus in strong breeze - and ended the regatta in seventh overall.

Reigning Finn class European champion Ed Wright had to settle for eighth despite coming home third in the medal race. Ed had led by seven points going into the penultimate day of competition, but a pair of mid-fleet results saw him plummet down the standings. Going into the medal race in tenth Ed still had a chance of a podium finish, but it was dependent on his rivals at the top of the table having a bad race. Unfortunately for him, a valiant third was not enough to send him up the leaderboard. In the men’s RS:X competition, Kieran Holmes-Martin also rounded off his world championship bid with victory in the medal race. Doing all he could, Kieran finally finished the regatta in fourth as his rivals did just enough to keep him off the podium. The final medal race of the regatta was set to feature the mixed multihull Nacra 17 class, but it was called off after the wind disappeared. Because of abandoned race, John Gimson and Anna Burnet finished eighth, with Ben Saxton and Nikki Boniface in tenth.

READY FOR TOKYO

The British Sailing Team finished in the top ten in every class at the regatta, which featured more than 1,400 competitors from more than 90 nations, and with it completed the job of qualifying Great Britain in every class for Tokyo 2020. britishsailingteam.rya.org.uk

It is a London Dry Gin featuring handpicked botanicals such as spicy cubeb berries from Indonesia, cardamom and black pepper from India and coriander from Morocco. Opihr is perfect as the key ingredient for a classic G&T with a twist of orange and a mixer. If you are wanting something a little more adventurous, try Opihr Gin with Ginger Ale, or if a Bloody Mary is more your thing, try the gin version - a Red Snapper - replacing your favourite vodka with Opihr Gin to give it an exotic twist. Opihr was inspired by the legendary region of the same name which prospered during the reign of King Solomon, and was famed for its wealth and riches. King Solomon regularly received cargoes of gold, silver and spices from Opihr and, whilst the exact location remains a mystery, it is thought to have been in the Orient, along the Ancient Spice Route. IAN PROCTOR CENTENARY RALLY Celebrating the centenary of the birth of renowned dinghy designer Ian Proctor at the Classic Boat Revival.

uring the course of the 2018 summer, here at All at Sea we have been proud to be associated with the celebrations surrounding the centenary of the birth of Ian Proctor; not just the UK’s but probably the world’s most success small boat designer. Since the start of the year we have carried articles on Ian himself, then the National 18, plus another on boatbuilder Jack Chippendale, who collaborated so closely with Ian. It has also been a superb season of summer weather, so it was a fitting tribute that everything came together for the gala on-water regatta that would represent the high water mark of the celebrations. And where else to hold the event other than Bosham SC which, as one of the oldest clubs on Chichester Harbour, is itself something of a modern classic. Showing no signs of being dismasted the day before, the Axe sails its way to Concours success for helm Nigel Daniels

BOSHAM’S CELEBRATIONS Over recent years Bosham’s Classic Boat Revival has established itself as the premier classic small boat event, with a growing entry list of exciting yet diverse dinghies. But as the platform for the Proctor celebratory event, Bosham could not have been a better choice, as their location, superb planning and event management would ensure that the proceedings would run like clockwork. As the sun shone and near perfect sea breezes blew up Bosham creek towards the picturesque quay, it almost seemed that the club had control of the elements too! Given the expected bumper entry, the club had negotiated with the National Trust, who own the large green field in front of the iconic Bosham Church. On the Friday, this area quickly filled up with an amazing collection of boats, ahead of a gala dinner that would welcome Ian Proctor’s family as the guests of honour.

ALL AT SEA OCTOBER 2018 In an enlightening and humorous address, Proctor’s son Roger thanked Bosham Sailing Club and all those who had worked so hard to create the season long retrospective of his father’s work.

Snugged up against Bosham Quay, the Air-Sea Rescue launch was a big draw for the many spectators

CLASSICS AFLOAT The weekend itself dawned to even better weather, which would allow the huge fleet of classic boats to be seen at their best in their natural habitat, out afloat. It says much of the draw of the Bosham event that the weekend also attracted a rewarding number of spectators, both ashore and out around the harbour. Amongst those watching the boats were members of Jack Chippendale’s workforce, who in the 1950s and 60s had worked producing boats that were as race winning as they were beautiful. To the usual collection of boats seen at classic events were some boats that were uniquely rare, with examples not having been seen out afloat for many a decade. Nor was it just the Proctor boats that would be displaying their lines out on the waters of the harbour, as other visitors ranged from the stately 12m Sharpie, that used to be such a regular part of racing in the area, to the smaller but equally graceful examples of the Axe One-Design (which had been towed around by water from their new base at Beaulieu). FIERCE COMPETITION It is now part of the Bosham Classic Boat Revival story that no matter how old the boats, the competition afloat will be just as fierce and hot as any modern fleet, and so this event turned out to be. Every place was contested as the experienced Race Team sent the fleets out around the harbour on courses that took in many of the more picturesque spots, which was a great plus point for the spectators and media afloat! Halfway through the afternoon, two new spectator craft joined in the fun, with the first of these being the beautiful 1890s Linton Hope designed Thames Rater sailed by Ossie Stewart. But even more impressive would be the growling presence of the WW2 high speed Air-Sea Rescue Launch that threaded its way up the harbour, with all the Proctor family aboard as spectators. Proctor has spent his wartime service in Air-Sea Rescue craft, so this was yet another fitting tribute to his amazing

After pausing to observe the racing on both courses, HS102 made her way right up to the quay where she went alongside to allow spectators aboard for a visit. After another night of fine food and excellent beer served up by the efficient serving teams in the club, Sunday was not just more of the same; somehow the September weather conspired to be even better. Again, the fleets sailed out to their respective courses for two more races.

WELCOME

Very rare (not to mention very colourful) - an Ian Proctor designed Adventuress dinghy takes to the water once more

WORKING TOGETHER It was great to see the second of the Axe One-Designs back afloat, as during the previous afternoon’s racing, an old wooden joint in the mast had failed, leaving the boat with a broken spar. It is a lovely compliment to the friendly ethos in the classic fleet, plus the genuine warmth of the Bosham welcome, that various helpers worked on into the evening in order to effect a repair. Their efforts were rewarded when the same boat won the overall Concours D’Elegance prize, the first time this coveted award has gone to a boat from the slow handicap fleet. With the end of the racing, the fleets sailed back to the club for the traditional Sunday afternoon pursuit of tea and cake, after which the well-attended prize giving saw the Proctor family again to the fore, giving out the awards. Thanks to the generosity of the high-profile sponsors Hartley Boats, Verisonalaw, Topper, ArbDB Chambers, Haines Boatyard, MPI Brokers and the ever-present delights of Pusser’s Rum, not only were the winners well rewarded but all the entrants, along with Bosham SC, felt that their weekend had been the right, fitting tribute to such an inventive, innovative and creative man of sail.

BOATING HOLIDAYS EVERY MONTH WE BRING YOU HOLIDAY NEWS AND A SELECTION OF OFFERS

SAIL BY THE CABIN

Thinking about a holiday in the Med? It remains a popular choice for sailors with plenty of destinations to choose from. Lucy Black, Head of Marketing for Sunsail, said: “The demand for sailing in the Mediterranean continues to be strong in Greece and Croatia, and our latest Mediterranean base in Palma Mallorca continues to grow with bookings up 27 per cent year on year. I am pleased to announce additional catamarans going into the Mediterranean and two new Sunsail 44, four-cabin monohulls going into Raiatea in 2019. Sailing holiday companies are continually looking for new holidays and new destinations, and from Sunsail comes Sail By The Cabin on flotilla. Lucy explained: “Available in Greece, Croatia and the British Virgin Islands next year, this is such a great way to experience not only a sailing holiday, but a flotilla too. Customers can enjoy their private cabin, along with other customers in the remaining three cabins, and no sailing experience is necessary - as there is a skipper on board to lead the way!” Due to popular demand for Sail By The Cabin, more dates and destinations have been launched for January to May 2019 in Greece, Croatia and the British Virgin Islands. www.sunsail.co.uk

CROATIA CALLING

With over 1,000 islands and 4,000km of coastline, Croatia is one of the world’s leading sailing destinations, catering for both budding Captain Cooks looking for an adventure and those who prefer the idea of relaxing in the harbour, with a cold glass of Pošip. Here are our four suggestions for sailing in Croatia. Kvarner Gulf - This large expanse of sea encompasses the islands of Krk, Cres, Pag, Rab and Mali Losinj. The region’s mild climate and the constant presence of the Maestral wind - a light breeze that will power your yacht to a steady pace – makes it ideal for year-round sailing. Tela ica Nature Park – Set in Tela ica Bay in the south east of Dugi Otok Island, one of the largest and best protected natural harbours in the eastern Adriatic allows visitors

to explore 25 coves and capes and five islands in peace. The Kornati Islands - The archipelago is made up of 140 islands and islets, which are perfect for nautical exploration. Although the islands are not permanently inhabited, you can sample delicious regional dishes such as black risotto with cuttlefish or a Brudet fish casserole at the old fishermen’s houses scattered around several bays on the islands of Kornat, Sit and Zut. Hvar and the Pakleni Islands Condé Nast Traveller voted Hvar among the world’s 10 most beautiful islands for its stunning coastline dotted with picturesque coastal villages such as Sveta Nedilja, Su uraj and Jelsa. On the neighbouring Pakleni Islands, you can enjoy crystalclear waters and hidden beaches. http://croatia.hr

CRUISING AHEAD

The cruise industry is big business with the number of new entrants and competition growing each year. The latest predictions show that the sector will attract 40 million passengers by 2027 and generate gross revenues of around US$60 billion. The order book is also at an all-time high with 106 new cruise ships expected to be built in the next 10 years.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO SAIL WITH SIR BEN AINSLIE?

Ben is a very intense personality on the water, he really drives for perfection.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE NEW AMERICA’S CUP BOAT?

It is certainly a challenge! Nothing has ever been built that even resembles this boat, so it is new ground for everybody which also makes it really exciting.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SAILING?

The competitive element of racing is what I most love about the sport, having the opportunity to sail on the fastest boats in the world is not too bad either!

DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER SAILING AMBITIONS?

The number one at the moment is winning the America’s Cup for Britain for the first time.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD TO SAIL?

I would have to say Sydney Harbour in the summertime is pretty hard to beat, although the annual Round the Island race here in Cowes is also very spectacular.

UNIQUE BOAT FOR SALE Campbell’s boat ‘Bluebird’ on Coniston Water. Two Healey boats were in the support team acting as rescue craft. Healey eventually pulled out of boat building as more companies started building them, and because the company could not put the resources needed into the market.

NEW HEALEY DISCOVERY

A recent discovery in 2018 has uncovered a Healey Sports Boat built in 1958 in remarkable condition. The boat was owned by a private owner for 59 years and only used in fresh water on the owners private lake in Staffordshire.

The 1958 Healey Sports Boat for sale through Stingrays Boats in Poole

THE first Healey Ski-Master was built at Bridport in Devon before moving production of the Healey Sports Boat to the company’s Cape Works in Warwick. It was first shown at the fourth National Boat Show, which had just moved to Earls Court from Olympia in 1957. The next model was called the Healey Sprite and a new subsidiary company Healey Marine was set up to concentrate on larger boats with an inboard engine. Inevitably, because of Donald’s competitive nature, Healey boats were entering races and he and his son Bic often drove them in events.

DONALD CAMPBELL

A chance meeting with world speed record driver Donald Campbell led to Bic being invited to a trial run for

The boat is fitted with its original engine the Austin-Healey 75 horse power engine. The boat is 14 foot 9 inches in length with a beam of 5 feet 6 inches. It was designed to be transported on a trailer, also built by Healey Marine that cost £75 new. The list price in 1958 was £575 for the Utility model and £650 for the Deluxe model. This mint condition model is available for sale with price on application and is a unique opportunity to own one of only a handful left in working condition. is for sale through Stingray Boats at Cobbs Quay Marine in Poole. Owner of Stingray Boats Mark Rowley can be contacted on 01202 023117 or 07836 695994.

A test in the third edition of Motor Boat and Yachting magazine tells us that the boat was designed by Bahamas Marine Ltd, a subsidiary of Healey Marine, who also built a prototype.

BELOW: Refilling reusable water bottles is an easy way to help the environment

he Green Blue, the joint environment initiative created by the RYA and British Marine to encourage a more sustainable recreational boating sector, is encouraging anyone organising a boating event to think about how it can be made as environmentally sustainable as possible. Sailing is dependent on the environment and there has undoubtedly been an increased interest among the UK boating community in the best practice we can follow to ensure we are doing all we can to minimise any impact on the habitats, wildlife and waters we share our boating activities with.

ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2012

Kate Fortnam, Campaign Manager for The Green Blue, explains: “From recycling at sea to the use of bikes and electric vehicles, there are many steps that event organisers can take to help protect the environment. Performing an environmental audit of their sailing venue to identify and improve areas that can be made more sustainable is a good first step. “Clubs should be seeking to ensure all their members use reusable water bottles as opposed to single-use plastic bottles. Installing an oil/fuel spill kit at their sailing venue to clean up accidental spills when refueling and implementing ‘check, clean and dry’ measures to minimise the spread of alien species around UK waters are also examples of best practice. “Boating events can vary in size from a small club regatta with less than 20 boats to a larger boating event such as Lendy Cowes Week with up to 1,000 boats and 8,000 competitors involved in racing each day. Sustainability matters irrespective of event size and where it is taking place.

“It is also a key factor in ensuring that sailing is relevant to younger generations, as they take it for granted that event organisers – and participants for that matter – will take care of the environment. “That is why The Green Blue team is working closely with a number of RYA departments to develop a Sustainable Boating Event Toolkit to support sailing clubs and training centres and help them make their boating events more environmentally sustainable.”

EVENT TOOLKIT

When it is launched, the new toolkit will provide an introduction to environmental sustainability, the first steps to making an event more sustainable, as well as an award system to credit events for their achievements in making them more sustainable. Event organisers can gain further recognition through working towards and gaining the ISO20121 sustainable event accreditation. ISO 20121 is a comprehensive framework that not all clubs or training centres are able to implement, but many of its principles can still be adopted on a smaller scale. The Green Blue offers a wide range of guides, posters and activity sheets, including an Environmental SelfAssessment for Clubs, and all resources are available free of charge at www.thegreenblue.org.uk. Follow @thegreenblue on Twitter. To find out more about the work of The Green Blue visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk.

BIG EVENTS, BIG CHANGES

We have seen Lendy Cowes Week and the Volvo Ocean Race stopover events both focusing on minimising the use of single-use plastics, as well as providing facilities for participants and spectators to recycle waste and refill their reusable water bottles. Being environmentally sustainable does not just include waste management though, although this is a good starting point. It can also include water and energy use, the types of products being sold at an event, how a race course is designed to avoid areas with more sensitive wildlife and habitats and ensuring eco-friendly cleaning products are used on and off the water.

LOOKING SHIP-SHAPE How to keep your boat looking fantastic at the end of the season.

E

ven for experienced sailors, DIY boat maintenance can be daunting. For first-time buyers, the temptation to hand everything over to the professionals is even greater – despite the fact that many maintenance jobs are much simpler than you would think. It is common knowledge that a bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office, so when your boat needs some TLC, the faster it is done the better. While some jobs can be time-consuming, there are a few ways to bring the shine back to your sailing without too much stress.

PREVENTING AND REMOVING STAINS

It goes without saying that the better you are at preventing stains from happening, the less time you will have to spend removing stains. Staining on fibreglass boats can be caused by anything from the chlorophyll in passing seaweed to coffee that has been spilt on deck, while staining on wooden boats may also be a result of mould. A simple sanding and re-varnishing will usually deal with stains on wood, though in some instances you may need to use oxalic acid to really lift darker marks. On fibreglass boats, maintaining overlying gelcoat is crucial when it comes to keeping your vessel looking sparkling clean. Cleaning off obvious stains after every sailing can be awkward while a boat is still in the water, but it is well worth it to stop them settling in. Avoid heavy duty cleaners where you can, as there are strict rules around polluting waterways with chemicals and the tough stuff can do more harm than good. Buffing stains with a wet cloth or sponge and water should be enough, but gentle, eco-friendly boat soaps are available and can be used cautiously on more stubborn stains. Once the stain is gone, it is time to rewax the gelcoat. To a new or inexperienced boat owner this might sound like a strenuous task, but when there are only small areas in need of a touch up it is as easy as following the instructions that come with your product. On gelcoat that is in good shape a traditional carnauba wax should be enough to bring back the shine, but a polymer sealant or hybrid is worthwhile if you think you need something heavier duty. Lastly, be sure to wash your fibreglass down after sailing in saltwater. Even if nothing looks dirty, when saltwater dries it leaves crystals behind that can magnify UV and speed up the breakdown of your wax.

INTERIOR CLEANING AND VINYL PROTECTANT

Full reupholstering is definitely a job for those who are properly trained, but maintaining your upholstery and other interior detailing need not be an added expense. The upholstery in your boat is designed to withstand lingering moisture and direct sunlight, but without a helping hand it can still wear out sooner than expected. While obvious tasks like vacuuming and polishing are unlikely to get missed, keep your interiors looking good by using vinyl protectants and

hydrogen peroxide washes on your new purchase too. Mixing one part hydrogen peroxide to one part water gives you an instant cleaning spray ideal for scrubbing seats and seams, invaluable in protecting against mould or mildew as well as removing any you find. Whatever you do, avoid the temptation to use standard household cleaning products that may not be suited to the purpose. Bleach and ammonia will damage fabrics and vinyl, and are best left well away. As with proper cleaning, vinyl protectant will slow and prevent damage from damp and excessive sunshine. Check for rips, cracks and tears when you are applying it, as these can let salt and water in and lead to more serious mould and rot. If you are storing your boat for the winter, remove any fabric or leather covers and store them elsewhere, as these are particularly prone to mildew.

Cover your boat during the winter if possible, but get those maintenance jobs done first

REMOVING BARNACLES AND COVERING

Each time your boat comes out of the water completely, be sure to give it a thorough hosing down – and keep an eye out for barnacles while you are at it. Cleaning and covering may be crucial when winterising a vessel, but it is also important to remember these tasks throughout the year to extend the life of your purchase. Barnacles can do serious damage, and cleaning them off is nobody’s favourite task. To get these stubborn hitchhikers off you will need to use a paint scraper, or in some cases a pressure washer. As you can imagine, scraping barnacles off is not great for your boat’s exterior. Dull the edges of any scraper before you start to minimise the risk of scratches, and use steel mesh to remove the finer parts left behind once most of the barnacles have been knocked off. You will also need to wash the affected area down with a lime wash once you are done, and re-apply antifouling paint and any protective waxes you have removed. Antifouling paint can prevent barnacles from attaching themselves to your hull in future, something anyone will be glad of after their first session of barnacle removal. Once your boat is clean and barnaclefree, keep it covered if you can. Wooden boats are particularly susceptible to damp rot and other weather damage, but fibreglass will also suffer when left exposed to the elements. As a general rule, wood suffers the most in cold weather, and fibreglass suffers in the sun. Whatever your boat of choice, a protective cover is a simple way to stop damage from occurring and takes no time at all to put on yourself.

LEAVE IT TO THE EXPERTS

Just as there are tasks that are avoided even though they are easy to do, there are tasks that people attempt to do themselves that can end up doing serious damage. Fibreglass repairs often seem like a small job, but you will need to invest in some serious kit to do them properly, from professional-standard buffers to die grinders and rotary tools. Rather than patch dents and scratches in fibreglass yourself and risk a bigger problem later, this is a task where it is best to get help. Likewise, cleaning sails can seem a straightforward job, but do it wrong and you are looking at an expensive mistake. Sail materials do not like being creased or left out in the wind, so scrunching them up in a bathtub or hosing and hanging out to dry in the air are a no-go. Badly cleaned sails are also liable to losing their protective coating, leaving you wide open to mould that rots the fabric and lands you in need of a whole new set of sails. If a job bigger than simple rinsing needs doing, professional cleaning and surface coat reapplication are a worthwhile investment and leave you plenty of time for all the jobs that you can safely do yourself. Written by Tabby Farrar on behalf of Broom Boats.

There are plenty of interior maintenance jobs you can do yourself

STAY ON THE WATER THS AUTUMN The scorching temperatures this summer mean that many of us have spent more time than ever before enjoying being out on the water, but that does not have to end with the arrival of autumn.

As autumn is drawing in, we are starting to feel the familiar return of some chiller weather as well as starting to lose some daylight. However, this does not mean you need to pack up the boat or windsurfing kit until spring. With autumn comes stunning colours, clear skies, crisp mornings plus plenty of breeze. Here are some more reasons to stay on the water…

THE Mastercla ss

EXCELLENT CONDITIONS

The UK tends to get some good low pressure systems moving through during the autumn and winter months providing some excellent sailing conditions - a mixture of light winds though to medium and exhilarating blustery winds. “I always feel autumn and winter provide some really exciting sailing, with strong South-Westerly winds and sometimes more challenging conditions. If the weather is a bit colder it also gives you that nice tingle when you come off the water and warm up after a great sail,” said RYA Regional Development Officer in the South Susie Moore. If you are windsurfing, weather conditions can bring anything from flat water blasting to choppier, challenging waters and some great swells being produced for waves.

WATER TEMPERATURE

You may be surprised to know that for most in the UK, on average, the water temperature in October is still as warm as it is in June. Sea temperatures should be at their maximum into autumn, while inland water temperatures (although

EXPERTS’ FORUM

inevitably varying considerably depending on location) may typically be colder than the sea in the autumn as sea takes longer to cool. What better time to practice those tricky manoeuvres without worrying about going for a swim.

CARRY ON RACING

If competition is your thing there are still plenty of opportunities to stay on the race course in all seasons. Frostbite Series, which traditionally start early November, are hugely popular both coastal and inland, with a number of clubs running local inter-club Frostbite Series giving you the motivation to keep coming back whatever the weather. Susie added: “To stop you getting cold many clubs simply shortened their races or start them earlier towards the end of the year, giving you more time to warm up afterwards. Lots of clubs have filling

comfort food and hot chocolate on offer after sailing. Perfect!”

KEEP FIT

Sailing provides heaps of health and fitness benefits including the fresh air, so why not make the most of them all year round? Both sailing and windsurfing can provide a full body workout, especially during a strong windy winter sail. You can also build core strength and balance as well as working out arms, abs, lower back and legs. What better way to earn your Sunday roast. Finally, if you keep practicing your sailing skills through autumn and winter you will find yourself ahead of the game when the ‘official’ sailing season begins again. If you want to get out on the water this autumn visit www.rya.org.uk/ startboating.

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM FOR YOUR BOAT environment, it will not last a season. That is why it is so important to brush up on the tech that is available and choose an audio system that offers you both sound quality and durability. Consider materials that will stand up to the elements and make sure that all the electronics on your boat are protected against salt, sun and water. Marine stereos are rated either sprayresistant or waterproof.

KEVIN LOTT, EMEA OEM SALES DIRECTOR AT FUSION ENTERTAINMENT, OFFERS HIS TOP TIPS FOR BUYING THE IDEAL ON BOARD ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM. If you are looking to invest in a new audio entertainment system for your boat, there can seem to be an endless amount of options to choose from. But a word of warning - if your gear is not designed to withstand the harsh marine

WHAT TO LOOK FOR Look for CD slots that are sealed with rubber gaskets. Faceplates can withstand either spray or complete immersion, depending on the receiver. In reality, marine stereos often are not rated by clear, objective waterproofing standards, but are ‘marinised’ for surviving in saltwater environments. Some receivers, especially those from Fusion, come with a submersible IP waterproof rating. Since you will be listening to your music out in the open ocean, you will want plenty of power for clean, clear sound. Better specs mean better sound quality, on land or at sea. For receivers, look for multiple sources available such as USB, MP3 and FLAC playback, Bluetooth streaming and AM/FM radio, waterproof or water-resistant display, flat or flush mounting installation options,

built-in amplifiers for louder and clearer audio and, if you have a larger system in mind, look for a marine receiver with multiple sets of preamp outputs. LOVE IT LOUD? Most aftermarket marine receivers come with built-in amplifiers, but if you love it loud or want to drown out the nautical background noise, you might want to consider adding an external amp to your system. Adding amplifiers to the system allows you to play your music at a higher volume

without straining the equipment, so it sounds better and lasts longer. Subwoofers are the missing element in many boats, but once installed they will give you the low-end bass that makes your music come alive. For those who want the biggest, most extensive audio system on the market, but are limited due to power and space constraints, opt for an all-in-one plug and play solution – like Fusion’s Panel Stereo –

that has all the performance of a powerful and durable audio entertainment system, packed into a compact form for easy installation. So you have picked out your system and you have got it installed – the only question left is, what song are you going to blast first? www.fusionentertainment.com

Falmouth Marina North Parade, Falmouth, Cornwall TR11 2TD falmouth@premiermarinas.com 01326 316 620

Falmouth Harbour is one of the largest natural deep-water harbours in the world and just up the Penryn river beyond the harbour sits Falmouth Marina, nestled in a wonderfully sheltered part of the river. FALMOUTH Marina offers a safe and sheltered haven, enjoying 24 hour easy access to the popular cruising grounds of The Fal Estuary, Cornish Coastline and further afield. Set in a designated area of natural beauty, the estuary offers up 12 miles of glorious boating water that stretches as far as the cathedral city of Truro with numerous creeks, wooded shorelines, quays and churches to explorer along the way. Once onshore, Falmouth Marina offers berth holders first-class facilities, including a delightful restaurant,

UpperDeck, renowned for offering a dining experience ‘with spectacular views’. The marina is conveniently placed for road access and exploring the local area. It is within walking distance of Falmouth town, which hosts a weekly market and a plethora of festivals. Here you will also find an eclectic mix of boutiques and independent shops, restaurants and plenty to see and do. Ideal for boaters of all abilities and with secure wet and dry stack berthing options, this marina makes a worthy recipient of the Yacht Harbour Association’s Five Gold Anchors Award.

FACILITIES

The construction of Falmouth Marina began in the 1970s. Since then the marina has expanded and improved its facilities. In 2011 a major dredging project on the western side of the marina enabled the creation of 30 new larger berths in the 12 – 16m size range. Over the last few years Falmouth Marina has improved parking, installed a dry stack facility for boats up to eight metres and overseen the refurbishment of the onsite bar and restaurant. In July 2017 Falmouth Marina’s facilities were upgraded to include 10 luxury individual cubicles – a private bathroom; one being a large family room and another large cubicle fitted with facilities for the disabled. Last November the marina was awarded the prestigious TYHA 5 Gold Anchor award for the first time, an uplift from the 4 Gold Anchors Falmouth Marina had previously been accredited with.

Falmouth Marina has its own onsite chandlery, Fal Chandlers, open seven days a week (10am – 6pm). It is a traditional chandlery providing most daily boat maintenance products from fittings, fastenings, ropes, paints and tools to more specialist items. Drop in for a great service backed by years of experience, and if you cannot see what you are looking for, the owner will happily order it in for you. Falmouth Marina is home to 13 businesses, which include a fantastic mix of marine tenants. These companies offer everything from rigging services to marine electronics, RYA training and yacht chartering. There is also an onsite brokerage for new and used boat sales, a sailing charity and a naval architect. Falmouth’s award-winning facilities also include a hairdressers, chiropractor and a team of financial advisors.

CRUISING

The Fal Estuary provides wonderful, protected cruising for boaters. On a spring tide or with a bilge-keeler, the river is navigable as far up as Malpas near the old port of Truro. South west of Falmouth is the Helford River, considered one of Britain’s most beautiful cruising grounds with plenty of anchorages and visitor moorings and just a day’s sail away from the marina are Fowey, Plymouth, Salcombe and Dartmouth.

BERTHING & STORAGE

The perfect location for both yachts and powerboats, Falmouth Marina offers in-water berthing for 320 boats up to 18 metres in length. Berthing for boats up to 18m (2m draft) is outside the cill, while berthing for boats up to 15m (1.5 draft) is inside the cill. The marina offers competitively priced annual berthing contracts and gives berth holders the option to pay as a lump sum or spread the cost of berthing fees by paying on a monthly basis. Falmouth’s experienced boatyard team provide year-round lift, high-pressure wash and block-off and re-launch services that includes the use of a 40 tonne Wise travel lift and a 1.5 tonne jib crane positioned on top of the Wise for mast work. Falmouth also benefits from extensive storage ashore, coupled with the marina’s dedicated onsite marine services. As a Premier annual berth holder you are entitled to a minimum of eight weeks free storage ashore with no restriction between 1 April and 30 September.

If you are looking for a great weekend out on the water with spectacular scenery then take a cruise to the beautiful, rugged landscape and peaceful waters of the Helford River and visit Helford Village; one of the unspoilt corners of Cornwall, history rich with tales of smuggling and fishing. Or if you fancy going further afield, continue to Mevagissey, with its winding streets, pretty harbour and numerous shops and galleries or to the historical harbour town of Fowey.

ACCESS

The approach to the marina is straightforward, but you should take extra care at low water spring tides. Travel upstream, leaving Greenbank Quay to port – you will see the marina as you pass Boyers Cellar, a deep water commercial jetty. Steer close to the marina’s outer pontoons, keeping between them and the East cardinal beacon. Moor at the visitors’ hammerhead on pontoon J. If approaching the marina at low tide, disregard the green and red channel buoys on the north side of the cardinal mark. These indicate the high water channel to Penryn, when the tide is in. Ensure you leave the east cardinal on your starboard side. On arrival call the marina using VHF Ch.80, or by using the telephone on the pontoon. The team at the marina will then allocate a berth for you. When travelling there by road, take the A30 to Truro and from Truro, take the A39 to Falmouth. If travelling by rail, Intercity trains run directly into Falmouth Town from

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The South West coastline is the perfect place to cruise England’s panoramic peninsula and visit a wealth of cultural and heritage destinations, including Premier’s newly acquired marina Noss on Dart. For the adventurous sailor, Falmouth Marina makes a great starting point for The Channel Islands, 100 miles east, Brittany 140 miles south-east and, if you are heading around Land’s End for Ireland or Wales, Falmouth Marina also makes a great stopover point.

Ian and Heather Barnes Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 41 DS I am an Engineering Officer and Heather is a Marine Geologist running the laboratories on board the JOIDES Resolution. We both work on the Scientific Research Vessel the JOIDES Resolution. Premier Falmouth is ideal for us due to its convenient location close to our home and within easy walking distance of the town of Falmouth. We leave our boat for long spells due to work commitments and are confident that it will be cared for. The crew at Premier Falmouth are a great team where nothing is too much trouble. The bar and restaurant above the office is very convenient... sometimes too convenient, we love it! Brand new shower and toilet facilities, easy access to its refuelling station, sheltered location, beautiful stroll to Falmouth’s or Penryn’s bars and restaurants and dependable team make it one of the top marinas we have used. We are very happy and are not moving anytime now or in the near future.

at the Greenbank Hotel and the Boathouse Pub perched up on the hill side, overlooking the Falmouth Estuary. Situated on Falmouth’s main beach, the award-winning Gyllyngvase Cafe offers an exciting lunchtime and evening menu. A five to 10 minute walk will bring you to a Sainsbury’s and Lidl. Birmingham, Bristol, the North and Scotland. Great Western trains run from London, Reading, Swindon and Bath. The nearest train stations are Falmouth, Truro and Plymouth.

LOCAL EATERIES

The onsite restaurant, UpperDeck, which is dog friendly, specialises in steaks, seafood and pizza. They pride themselves on cooking high-quality, fresh food, sourced from only the very best local suppliers, including West Country butchers, Baker Tom’s and Matthew Stevens. For wholesome pub classics, local gems include the Working Boat Pub

THINGS TO DO

A short walk along the river bank passing the Victorian Harbour brings you to Falmouth town centre. Here you will find an excellent mix of unique boutiques and high street shops. If you are looking for something different, Trebah Garden is a sub-tropical paradise with more than four miles of footpaths to explore with the family and four-legged friends; it is open every day of the year from 10am. Or enjoy the valley garden at the National Trust’s Glendurgan, leading down to a sheltered cove and beach, and Trelissick Gardens – a grand country house and garden in an estate with stunning maritime views and lovely woodland walks. Feel like walking? Take a gentle stroll along the South West Coast Path National Trail; a remarkable footpath that follows largely unspoilt coast for 630 miles (from Somerset’s Minehead around to the shores of Poole Harbour in Dorset). It is one of the best ways to explore Falmouth’s four golden beaches (scattered along the coast from Pendennis point along to Maenporth) and take in the breath-taking views. Or for a healthy dose of maritime heritage, make your way to the town, where you will find the multi award winning National Maritime Museum, overlooking Falmouth harbour. Further afield, the famous Eden Project is within 40 minutes’ drive and Henry III’s finest coastal fortress, Pendennis Castle is also well worth seeing. But if you still need a reason to visit the marina, why not coincide your trip with the start of the Falmouth Regatta, the Falmouth Classics or the Oyster Festival.

Anne Hales Seaward 29 I have been associated with Falmouth Marina in one way or another for 30 years. For some time I owned the Ancasta brokerage franchise at the marina and then since my retirement have kept my boat there. I have seen many changes over the years, which have steadily improved the facilities and services. Since Premier has owned the marina significant improvements have been made. I am particularly pleased at the acquisition of the adjoining boatyard and the extra land for car parking, both of which enhance the functioning of the marina. The standard of the facilities, shops and businesses and the overall maintenance is now of a high standard to be enjoyed by us all. Due to age my sailing days are now over, so we have a motorboat - a Seaward 29 - which suits us well and is great for the numerous grandchildren. David Pascoe and John Warren Joint owners of Waterwitch, Jeanneau Merryfisher We had always considered marinas to be prohibitively expensive - then we bought a new boat which was berthed at Falmouth Marina. We chatted to the friendly staff, had a good look around and were hooked! Amazing facilities ashore and afloat, good security, safe mooring even in the depths of winter and we use the boat so very much more than either of us ever have in our combined 100 years of boating!

FLARES DISPOSAL DAY AT BRIGHTON MARINA ON 24 November from 10am until 3pm Brighton Marina’s onsite chandlery, Nickys Canvasworks, is holding a Flares Disposal Day. Disposal experts, Ramora UK, will be at the ready for boat owners to bring along out-of-date flares, have them checked and disposed of safely. Premier berth holders and visitors will be charged £2.50 per flare disposal. Premier Brighton Marina Manager, Mike Hatch said: “This event is a good reminder for boat owners to check expiry dates on safety equipment regularly and replace them before they expire - so that they can be sure to be properly equipped in an emergency.” The chandlery, which has recently benefited from a refurbishment, will pay £1 towards the flare disposal fee when

berth holders* buy a new flare from the chandlery. Berth holders and visitors can park right outside the chandlery free for one hour. All profits will be donated to the RNLI. For those who intend to dispose of a large number of flares call 01273 690 696 or email sales@nickyscanvasworks.com *Berth holders eligible for the saving on production of their boat name and key fob.

INSURANCE DEAL FOR MDL BERTH HOLDERS

MDL Marinas has appointed Towergate Insurance as its new insurance partner for members’ boat insurance, offering comprehensive cover that stretches across the full network of 124 marinas. The partnership was launched at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show with a compelling offer.

Highlights of the new insurance include no excess fees when a claim is made for an incident within an MDL Marina, and up to £1,500 for repatriation / loss of use. Also covered in the Towergate Platinum Cover is cover for a single tender, loss of keys, misfuelling and legal expenses plus many more factors.

Additionally, MDL’s Beds on Board scheme (which enables members to reap economic benefits from their berthed boats through a bed rental scheme) can be covered. “MDL members deserve peace of mind, whether that is while berthed or out enjoying their boat,” said Dean Smith, MDL’s commercial director. “That

ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARD FOR PREMIER MARINAS

is what we are giving them with Towergate, an enhanced product over anything we have offered before. For example, Freedom Berthing is the most innovative marina berthing product available to boaters allowing them to explore our impressive network at no extra cost, and we wanted to complement our members’ spirit of discovery with an equally innovative insurance product and service. Whether customers are renting out their boat via our Beds on Board scheme, or enjoying a few weeks exploring the Med in our marinas, we want them to rest assured that they are being covered by the best.”

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF HASLAR MARINA

JOHN Dean and Richard Reddyhoff had a huge task in building Haslar Marina: reclaiming land, dredging the creek, building the wave break and refitting the Mary Mouse Lightship. Then, in 1993, Haslar Marina welcomed the first berth holder, Dick Pinhey with Corsair of Barbary. Ben Lippiett, Haslar Marina Manager, said: “We are looking forward to celebrating Haslar Marina’s history and swapping stories and memories. A quarter of a century later, it is fantastic that 22 of the original berth holders are part of the Haslar Marina family. We look forward to celebrating the next 25 years with existing and new berth holders.” As well as the new dry stack facility and Portland, investment plans for Haslar Marina and upgrading of facilities taking place, there is a diverse and growing business community at Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas with a range of business units from shops and offices to boatsheds and workshops that are let to local companies. Portland Marina recently welcomed several new tenants including innovative marine

PREMIER Marinas has announced it has received ISO 14001:2015 certification; an internationally recognised standard for running effective environmental management systems. The first marina group to achieve this in the UK, this award is an affirmation of Premier Marinas’ hard work and dedication to managing its environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner to enhance its environmental performance. Alongside implementing a programme of routines that promote and practise environmental sustainability, Premier Marinas continues to invest in initiatives that can impact the environment in a positive way. Premier has installed solar panels at six of its marinas and is on track this year to generate 417 mwh of electricity

and avoid 226 tons of CO2 emissions. Moreover, the group recycles all waste across every site, ensuring nothing goes to landfill and has replaced all of its building light bulbs with energy saving ones that include PIR motion sensors. Premier is also conscious of the environment in its day-to-day practices, from reducing business mileage by having shared pool cars, to minimising noise pollution by installing white noise alarms on plant machinery and looking after marine wildlife by positioning Seabins in its marinas to collect rubbish and debris from the sea. To gain ISO 14001:2015 accreditation a comprehensive review was carried out over a six month period which involved audits of Premier’s Environmental Management System and audits at selected marinas to ensure uniformity of working practices.

THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS The team at ean eddyho lo e boats. aking sure that berth holders and isitors to their fi e stunning south coast marinas en oy themsel es out on the water and on dry land is what keeps the team happy. hat is also really important to them is encouraging sustainable boating. e spoke to Ben ippiett, arina anager at aslar arina to find out more.

F

rom litter picks of the marina bund and shoreline to electric vehicle charging points, the Dean & Reddyhoff environmental philosophy is much more than just the legal requirements. They try to minimise waste, be efficient in all their operations and make sure that where they can they reuse, repurpose and recycle. All their marina teams – Weymouth, Portland, Haslar, Deacons and East Cowes - are part of a recycling league which keeps them focused on increasing the percentage of recycling waste. They are reducing their carbon emissions including having PIR lighting fitted in the washrooms to avoid wasting electricity at night or creating additional light pollution. Halogen lighting is being switched to LED and a new electric online smart system has been introduced so customers can check in real time the amount of energy they are using. They have seen a shift in electricity usage as customers can have reduced costs as they have better visibility on real time consumption. There is also the ability to turn shore power on and off online which also saves them money, for example, charging batteries a few days ahead of arrival to their boats.

LOW IMPACT

Water conservation and management is key with push button and infrared taps and reduced flushing loos. The team work with contractors and suppliers to make sure that they are sourcing products that have as little impact on the environment as possible. There is more to it than recycling and being really careful about what they use.

Dean & Reddyhoff’s amazing gardener, Dave, carefully selects plants that are plant and pollinator friendly and that thrive in a sometimes harsh, windy and salt splashed coastal environment with little soil. If you pop along to their stand (E043) at TheYachtMarket.Com Southampton Boat Show you can see one of Dave’s fabulous gardening creations – and rest assured post show all the plants and materials get lovingly replanted and reused at their marinas. Dean & Reddyhoff also work closely with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and are looking forward to the results of the second Seals of the Solent survey. For the second year running the Haslar Marina berth holders’ party raised more than a thousand pounds towards funding this vital marine biology work.

TOP TIPS

The berth holders and marina visitors are brilliant at getting involved and fully understand the importance of how they can help make boating sustainable now and for the future. It is amazing how much rubbish – crisp bags, soft drink cans, sandwich wrappers and orange peel – can be produced even on a short trip out on the water; a crossChannel sail with six people on board quickly produces lots of rubbish. Boats on transatlantic cruises plan their rubbish management carefully, and while most local sailors have the luxury of marina facilities at the end of each day, it does not hurt to think like a blue water cruiser.

Here are some of Dean & Reddyhoff’s favourite rubbish reducing and recycling tips. n Sort your shopping before you head down to the boat. Remove excess packaging and put it in your home recycling and rubbish bins. This will cut down what you need to store on board. n If possible, put loose foods (cheese, salad, meat etc) into separate re-usable plastic containers. These ‘Tupperware’ type boxes are easier to stack in boat lockers and fridges, which can make life on board a lot less frustrating, especially on a sailing boat in windy weather. A close-fitting lid also reduces the risk of cross-contamination between raw and cooked foods. n Quality resealable and washable freezer bags are really useful. Big plastic clips for sealing crisp and cereal packets help keep things fresh and reduce spillages and waste. n If necessary, rinse waste packaging over the side before putting it in the bin – this will reduce smells.

n Crush food tins and drink cans so they take up less space. n Separate the rubbish from the start – food waste in one bag, dry mixed recycling (cans, paper, recyclable plastics) in another and glass in a third. n Few boats have adequate dedicated rubbish bins for a weekend, but most boats have large external lockers. The anchor locker or lazarette can sometimes be used as bin storage on a long trip. This keeps rubbish away from your living areas, keeping things smelling sweet. n Never throw rubbish over the side – even items like apple cores take ages to break-down in the water, let alone plastics. n Never ever put flares/pyrotechnics into rubbish or recycling bins. n All good marinas will have recycling facilities, including special facilities for hazardous waste like engine oil and fuel filters. If in doubt, ask.

TIME FOR DRINKS BY PAUL ANTROBUS

Paul Antrobus explains why PX stands for the best sherry and whisky liqueur.

PX, or the full name Pedro Ximénez, prominently displayed on a bottle of sherry looks like a brand name but it is not. It is actually the name of the grape-type used in the production process that is Denominación de Origen controlled in the adjacent Montilla-Moriles and Jerez de la Frontera areas of Andalusia, southwest Spain. So it is a generic term like Beaujolais or Côtes du Rhône on a red wine bottle. Montilla-Moriles creates the vast majority of PX wines within their own denomination but some are transferred back to bodegas in the Jerez-XérèsSherry region for maturation which allows them to be labelled as sherry.

WHO WAS PEDRO?

One very interesting variation has been created by the English Whisky Company and their St George’s Distillery of Roudham, Norfolk, with their recently re-launched The Norfolk PX Liqueur. Most of us know that whisky (Scotch or English) is matured in oak barrels, mostly preused bourbon, port or sherry casks which provide a vast range of difference in the bottled whisky, depending on cask type and ageing. Some of the sherry casks imported by The English Whisky Co arrive full of rich dark sherry, which normally have to be emptied before the whisky can be put in. But the English Whisky St George’s Distillery has taken a novel reverse route and added some of its own single malt whisky to the sherry in the casks and left it to continue maturing. The proportion of whisky to sherry is not disclosed. The result is an interesting liqueur fortified wine at about 20 per cent abv, very good as a sweet pudding wine, especially recommended by St George’s with ice cream. It would be a nice extra for a Christmas dinner (sorry, but it is not that far away!). It can be sourced direct from the distillery www.englishwhisky.co.uk listed at £19.90 for a 50cl bottle or head over to the website: 7 9 www.thewhiskyexchange.com.

Records of the PX grape go back to the 17th century, but the name itself is a mystery as there are no records of a wine maker called Pedro Ximénez, even though it looks like there should be. Only three grape types are permitted in the Sherry DOC from the Montilla-Moriles/Jerez region: Palomino, the most widely grown, Moscatel, used for most of the Spanish sweet wines and Pedro Ximénez, generally acclaimed as the ‘king’ of sherry grapes. PX grapes are harvested in September then left laid out to be dried by the sun for a couple of weeks, reducing the water content and increasing the sugar concentration. They are then fermented and matured by the Solero system in which the liquid is passed through a succession of six or seven oak barrels, a half barrel at a time, being taken from the last barrel for bottling or more maturing, which is refilled from the barrel before it and so on up the chain, making room for the new wine to be added to the first barrel in the sequence. 4 1 2 8 1 2 4 The generic status of the PX wine 9
