ROUND THE ISLAND RACE CANCELLED AFTER first announcing the postponement of the 2020 Round the Island Race from May to September, the Island Sailing Club has announced the cancellation of the race. The club has been exploring every avenue with all relevant authorities to keep the 2020 race alive. However, running the event and guaranteeing Covid-19 compliance to protect the safety of staff and volunteers, as well as the many thousand competitors, proved impossible. Race director Dave Atkinson said: “With fears of a second wave, the growing number of restrictions on overseas travel as well as the rise in local lockdowns; our hopes of staging this year’s race have been dashed. As sailing restrictions have eased, it appeared that safety on the water was becoming less of an issue, but sadly, with Round the Island being one of the UK’s largest sporting events, meeting shoreside Covid-19 compliance, within current government guidelines, is simply not achievable.” Ian Walker, RYA racing director, said: “I am

sad to hear that the Round the Island Race, a highlight of the British sailing calendar, has been cancelled for 2020. I am sure many people, like myself, were looking forward to competing in the re-arranged race, but I am not surprised that the Island Sailing Club came to this tough decision. “Whilst the RYA have pushed hard for the return to boating that we have enjoyed since May, we have also encouraged the boating community to be considerate and conservative. I believe that this decision recognises the potential risks of such a large-scale event, respects our RYA principles, and most importantly respects the emergency services and the many local communities that might have been affected. I very much hope that 2021 will prove to be bigger and better than ever.” The hundreds of entries for this year’s race will be rolled over to 2021 when they will be joined by hundreds more to no doubt make the 2021 Round the Island Race an unforgettable celebration of sailing. VOLUNTEERS from Llandudno RNLI lifeboat station were called out following reports of a submerged vehicle. The crew of the inshore lifeboat Dr Barbara Saunderson were required to urgently investigate an abandoned vehicle, which had

been found by the North Wales Police and was being submerged by the incoming tide. It was reported that the Land Rover was stuck in mud and, despite being advised by the coastguard to have it moved, it was left overnight. It was then submerged by the tide.

BRITISH MOTOR YACHT SHOW LAST month the 2020 British Motor Yacht Show made its mark as one of the UK’s first boat shows to successfully go ahead post lockdown, with social distancing measures in place and a customer booking system to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all who attended. Backed by top British luxury motor yacht brands Fairline, Sunseeker, Princess and Premier Marinas, the show took place at Swanwick Marina. This year’s event also welcomed a number of high profile UK and overseas brands including Azimut, Bavaria, Bayliner, Beneteau, BRIGG, Chris Craft, Jeanneau, Prestige, Sealine and Williams Jet Tenders. Fairline had an incredibly successful show, with customers being offered the opportunity to board the highly-anticipated F//Line 33. Richard Bates, managing director, was impressed with the outcome: “This year’s show has been the best we have ever experienced in the seven years the British Motor Yacht Show has been running. REGULAR readers will be familiar with the story of Greig City Academy and the boat Scaramouche. It has been a number of years since they first hit boating headlines with their inspiring story, and so we decided to find out what they have been up to and more about their unique viewpoint on diversity within sailing. Their journey, written by two of the Academy’s students, is on page 28. Just when we thought holidays were back, we found popular destinations having 14day quarantines introduced upon returning to England. I hope you were not one of the thousands of travellers impacted by the sudden introduction of a quarantine. It does not have to mean, though, that we cannot travel abroad. It is simply a matter of doing your research and, especially in the shorter term, being aware that quarantines can be brought in (and taken away). So, with inevitable confusion for travellers we asked the experts at Sunsail and The Moorings for their advice when it comes to booking a charter in the current climate (page 26). When I came back from holiday last month, I had the inevitable inbox full of emails to sift through. My mood was instantly lifted as I opened message after message containing photos of your adorable dogs spending time afloat. They genuinely put a smile on my face as the grey skies of England welcomed me home. I can tell a great many All at Sea readers are back on – and enjoying – the water, as I also discovered lots of great photographs sent in for Photo of the Month. We might still be restricted as to what we can do – and how – but it is reassuring to know our appreciation of the water and the beauty it holds continues. There are some stunning scenes in this month’s round-up of reader pics over on page 31. Do you agree with our choice for the Photo of the Month? Perhaps it will be a photo taken at this month’s BOATS2020 in Southampton. A highlight in the annual boating calendar, it was disappointing, but understandable, that the Southampton Boat Show was cancelled. To find out, therefore, that there is to be a boating event in Southampton, albeit on a smaller scale, was very welcome news for both the marine industry and boating enthusiasts. Find out more about BOATS2020, and some of the boats on show, on page 10. BOATS2020 was just one of the subjects we discussed with British Marine’s CEO, Lesley Robinson, in this month’s Boating People. We also found out Lesley’s thoughts about careers in the marine industry and what is being done to address the gender balance in boating and watersports and, of course, the potential longterm impact of Covid-19. BOATS2020 is not the first show to take place in this new Covid world however. Already showing it is possible to put on an event that both exhibitors and visitors will approve of is the British Motor Yacht Show. It took place in August at Premier’s Swanwick Marina and was hailed a resounding success with Fairline even reporting it was: “The best we have ever experienced in the seven years the British Motor Yacht Show has been running.” High praise indeed. Although there are success stories like this, we are also still hearing about event cancellations. The most high profile of these in recent weeks is the much-loved Round the Island Race. Already moved to September from its original May date, the organisers felt meeting “shoreside Covid-19 compliance within current government guidelines, is simply not achievable.” Lastly, we have another great competition for you. MDL MARINAS CONFIRMS LINE-UP FOR OCEAN VILLAGE BOAT SHOW

THE Ocean Village Boat Show, taking place from 11 - 20 September, has confirmed its line-up, with more than 80 boats on

display from global power and sail names. MDL reported that it has even had to turn exhibitors away. The numbers of visitors are restricted on a daily basis; only those who have booked an appointment in advance can visit the show. Appointments can be made via a booking portal on MDL’s website, which also lists all the models available to view. MDL has put a raft of measures into place, and has been working with Southampton City Council to make sure the show’s exhibitors, visitors and wider

team are confident in the measures taken. The pontoons have been carefully adapted with connecting ‘bridges’ to make a one-way system. Everyone on site will be asked to wear a mask at all times, and be asked to make use of hand sanitisers placed around the site. Each boat will be thoroughly cleaned after each appointment by the dealership teams. “We have been overwhelmed with companies wanting to exhibit,” said Tim Mayer, MDL’s sales and marketing director. “There is a real appetite to get boats in

SAILGP’S HOLLYWOOD DEBUT SAILGP is making its Hollywood debut when two F50s – the world’s fastest and most technologically advanced sail race boats – take a starring role in the summer’s blockbuster Tenet, a new sci-fi spy thriller, in cinemas now, by director Christopher Nolan. The blockbuster, starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh, was filmed across the world – including Southampton – and when the script required an epic sailing scene, SailGP answered the call. Following the Cowes SailGP in August 2019, two F50s – the Japan and U.S. boats – were rebranded for the Hollywood movie and SailGP’s athletes took part in the filming, although it will be a struggle to spot them thanks to the magic of cinematography. U.S SailGP helm Rome Kirby and SailGP Season 1 champion Tom Slingsby of the Australia team were two of the athletes involved and they spent a week at the helm of the F50s – one white and one blue – setting up dramatic, boat-on-boat scenes

in the Solent, under the watchful eye of Christopher Nolan from a helicopter. “When news reached us that SailGP would be featured in a Hollywood movie, everyone wanted to be involved,” said Tom. “It was one of those things you hear and think that it would be cool but would never happen. It was amazing to get a little insight into Hollywood, and it was a fun project to be part of. I cannot wait to see the movie.” While SailGP is a logistical feat involving national teams from around the world, multiple global events and the world’s top athletes – the Hollywood production was another level. Based out of Southampton docks, the filming involved multiple helicopters, chase boats, hi-tech camera boats, IMAX cameras, production staff and a team of hair and make-up, which Rome Kirby got to experience first-hand. “In the script, the white boat was helmed by the character played by Elizabeth Debicki,” explained Kirby. “In the real world, very few people are equipped to handle an F50 and while Elizabeth already had a stunt

double – who had more than a passing resemblance to the Australian actress – even in a blonde wig, I did not really cut it as a Hollywood leading lady. “It was amazing to be a part of. We shot scene after scene, scenario after scenario trying to get as close to each other as possible. We did not know how the pieces would fit together or where they would feature in the movie, but I think it will be a pretty prominent scene.” SailGP Season 2 will restart in San Francisco and New York in April and June of next year. sailgp.com

SAILGP sees exciting inshore stadium racing take place on F50 catamarans, which hold the title of World Sailing Boat of the Year after setting a speed record last year. Olympic gold medalists and defending America’s Cup champions, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, will be joining SailGP’s second season as part of the newly formed New

Zealand SailGP Team. Peter and Blair have been paired on the water since 2008, and have collected two Olympic medals and six world titles together in the 49er class. They were jointly named World Sailor of the Year in 2015, while Peter added the honour again in 2017 after helming Emirates Team New Zealand to America’s Cup victory at just 26-years-old.

The SailGP championship returns in April 2021, with the first grand prix set for San Francisco. Before that, though, the duo will be seeking their second America’s Cup title in March on home waters in Auckland. They will also be aiming for a return to the top of the podium at the postponed Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer. www.SailGP.com

ALL AT SEA SEPTEMBER 2020 British Marine have been working with key stakeholders to develop a detailed set of enhanced measures to provide the highest levels of hygiene and safety. These measures will focus on four cornerstones: Social Distancing, Cleaning and Hygiene, Protect and Detect and Clear Communications. British Marine will be monitoring and responding to any last-minute changes in the ever-evolving health situation, and will be asking all visitors, exhibitors and event staff to comply with the latest public health advice. The carefully designed show layout and ticketing platform will help create a safe environment for all visitors and will allow them to focus on spending quality time with exhibitors. Tickets will be limited and are expected to be booked up quickly. Councillor Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Homes and Culture, Southampton City Council, concluded: “Southampton is known for its packed calendar of events, but we have had to rethink how we can present popular features like the boat show safely for exhibitors and visitors. The Marine Equipment Trade Show (METSTRADE), planned for November in Amsterdam, has been cancelled due to the pandemic. It is the world’s largest trade exhibition for equipment, materials and systems for the international leisure marine industry. METSTRADE 2021 will take place on 16 - 18 November 2021.

GREEK SHOW

Greece’s lockdown ended in early May, and its borders opened on 15 June with yacht charters for foreigners allowed the same day. Now, the first ever Olympic Yacht Show is set for 1 – 4 October at Olympic Marine, a short drive from Athens. The weather is usually mild and sunny at this time of year, and the show is set to attract a number of interesting yachts including several world debuts. FOLLOWING the news that there would be no Southampton Boat Show this year, it came as a pleasant surprise to many when British Marine announced that Southampton International Boat Show Ltd will present BOATS2020 at Mayflower Park, Southampton from 11 – 20 September. It will be an outdoor and on-the-water event with the health, safety and security of exhibitors, visitors and colleagues its number one priority. The show itself will be a not-for-profit showcase of boats and equipment aimed at the serious boat buyer and enthusiast, keen to see and buy the latest models and equipment. British Marine has worked tirelessly with Southampton City Council, exhibitors and key event stakeholders to find a way to deliver this event on behalf of the industry and to support its members. With Covid-19 measures a priority, The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has confirmed that the event plans fall within current government guidance. Exhibitors and visitors can therefore be reassured that mitigating the risk of Covid-19 and safety is at the top of the agenda. Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, said: “British Marine has remained absolutely committed to supporting the industry through the provision of an event this year. The staging of BOATS2020 presented by Southampton International Boat Show Ltd would not have been possible without the support of Southampton City Council, and I am delighted that we have been able to make this happen, at a time when so many other events have been cancelled. “This not-for-profit event will offer boat buyers and the leisure marine industry a chance to come together with the reassurance that the event is within government guidelines. Visitors will see a super range of sailing and power boats, and the event format - with opportunities to book appointments on boats - will create a day of quality viewing for visitors.” To date 78 boats from 30 brands, including Princess Yachts, will be located in the purpose-built marina, alongside more than 40 land-based exhibitors of related marine equipment. Fischer Panda UK will provide visitors at BOATS2020 with an interactive experience of its complete system capability. There will be live demonstrations of its marine generators, electric propulsion, air-conditioning, watermaker and power monitoring units affording visitors the chance to see, hear and operate the products for themselves. Fischer Panda experts will also be available to offer advice on product selection and installation, and to answer any specific questions from boaters.

Princess Yachts will have eight boats at Mayflower Park, including the Princess Y85. Offering an alternative to marina berthing, Pure Latitude will also be at the show with their boat share club memberships tailored to fit busy lifestyles and providing access to both power and sailing yachts in a range of locations. In addition, Sutton Harbour Marina is displaying a joint exhibit with its sister marina, King Point Marina, promoting berthing opportunities in Plymouth. NEW DUO LOOKING TO PARIS 2024 RECORD-breaking round-the-world yachtswoman Dee Caffari and young gun James Harayda will fly the flag for Great Britain at the EUROSAF Mixed Offshore European Championship. The duo will go up against teams made up of Europe’s most talented offshore sailors in the next major step towards the Paris 2024 Olympics, where the mixed offshore keelboat event will debut. Dee was the first woman to sail solo and non-stop around the world in both directions, and is the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world three times. With one Vendee Globe and two Volvo Ocean Races also under her belt, she has now set her sights on the Olympics. “As soon as I heard that double-handed keelboat sailing would be in the Olympics, I knew I had to be involved,” said Dee. “It is an exciting development for this class of sailing, and it plays to my strengths. “James and I got together quite last minute, but he has really impressed me and we have formed a really strong team. We are delighted to have been selected for the Europeans, and it is a good step towards Paris 2024.” James, 22, is a graduate of the RYA’s British Keelboat

HELLY Hansen has reported a record-breaking summer of watersports sales, as an increasing number of the British public head out on the water. To ensure that people are staying safe, Helly Hansen collaborated with the RNLI to curate and share safety and technical messages with this new group of watersport enthusiasts, advising how to buy and maintain Personal Flotation Devices. The company has also seen direct evidence of the increase in watersports throughout the UK, with its PFD sales volume increasing three-fold over May and June. The increase in popularity of water-based activities, such as paddleboarding, has also been reflected in the

number of call outs for RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews. RNLI Lifeboats have already launched more times for incidents involving paddleboards than for the whole of 2019, saving three times as many lives. RNLI Regional Water Safety Lead, Nick Ayers, said: “Our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have been busy this summer with a number of emergency calls to incidents involving paddleboards. British Army bomb disposal experts have cleared as many as 1,000 unexploded devices from an area of the Yorkshire coastline. The RAF and US Air Force used a 600-acre zone on the beach as a training bombing range until 1998. Range targets were placed on the cliffs above Mappleton Beach, which forms part of the UK’s fastest eroding coastline. The rapid erosion has exposed “significant amounts” of ordnance on the beach itself.

NORFOLK DEATH

A woman sadly died after becoming trapped under a boat following a collision between two craft in Great Yarmouth. Norfolk Constabulary Police said: “Officers attended the scene, along with Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, the Coastguard and the East of England Ambulance Service, however, the woman, aged in her 30s and from the London area, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident and how the woman came to be in the water.”

MAYFLOWER 400

THE four-nation Mayflower commemoration programme, involving the UK, USA, Netherlands and Wampanoag, will commemorate and explore the 400 year anniversary of the journey and impact of one of history’s most famous ships, The Mayflower. Following lockdown, the main national programme, supported by Arts Council England, started in Southampton on 15 August with Wampum: Stories from the Shells of Native America. It is a national touring exhibition curated by The Box, Plymouth about the continuing search for a lost treasure of indigenous America. This will be followed with an online documentary presented by TV historian Dan Snow on 16 September, marking 400 years to the day since the Mayflower ship set sail. The Mayflower 400 programme will run through to 2021 culminating with a Four Nations Commemoration Ceremony in July. The main ceremony, on 11 July, will involve a major public event on

Plymouth Hoe including a 1,000 voice choir, the full orchestra of the Band of HM Royal Marines Plymouth, a depiction of the Mayflower story and representation from the four nations – UK, USA, Netherlands and, for the first time, the Wampanoag nation. Deputy leader of Plymouth City Council, Pete Smith, said: “It has been an extraordinarily challenging year, but we are delighted to be able to carry so much of the Mayflower 400 commemorative programme into 2021. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency is investing over £170 million in a new radio network that will enable Her Majesty’s Coastguard to continue to save lives for many years. The programme will replace copper telephone wiring with modern fibre-based technology to each of the HM Coastguard’s 155 remote radio sites, as well as adding new connection points to increase resilience and diversity, which will in turn improve reliability.

DOG RESCUED

It was reported in the Daily Mail that a collie dog called Jonah was found in a cave 24 hours after going missing from a yacht. Jonah’s owner, Wayne Booth, had been sailing off St Mawes, Cornwall when the incident occurred. Jonah usually wears a lifejacket, but Wayne said the dog had been below deck and must have sneaked past him. She was found by two kayakers who came across her in a cave near St Anthony’s lighthouse.

TIMOTHY Long is attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo round Britain, at the age of 15. At the time of writing Timothy has completed almost 1,000nm of his journey and hopes to return to Hamble in midSeptember, depending on the weather. Timothy, who set sail from Hamble Point on 16 July on board Alchemy, his Hunter Impala 28, is sailing anti-clockwise to raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. The teenager said: “I wanted an adventure and a challenge that would test me and make me a better sailor, whilst being able to explore new places.” Timothy had his first experience of sailing at the age of nine, when he completed his RYA levels 1 & 2. Timothy explained: “I was tipped into the freezing water of a reservoir during capsize training in the middle of a thunderstorm with hail hitting the water. It was far from

what I expected, but it did not put me off… instead I caught the bug!” During his voyage, Timothy is fundraising for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which supports young people age 8 - 24 to rebuild their confidence after cancer through sailing and adventure trips. “Dame Ellen MacArthur has been a huge inspiration to me, ever since I first read her books,” said Tim. “Fundraising for the Trust is an opportunity to combine my passion for sailing with a cause which is close to my heart, since the charity supports people of a similar age to me who have been through the worst of times.” To support his fundraising campaign, visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ roundbritain2020. ROUND BRITAIN CHALLENGE YOUNG people who sailed around Britain in recovery from cancer are amongst those getting involved in an epic new virtual challenge event launched by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust to transform young lives after treatment. Round Britain Your Way is running throughout September to coincide with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The challenge invites anyone to run, swim, walk, cycle or create their own challenge to collectively travel the 2,400 miles around the British coastline. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that empowers young people to embrace their future after cancer. When treatment ends, the Trust’s work begins as for many young people, picking up where they left off

before their diagnosis is not possible. Many young people will need the Trust more than ever in the wake of Covid-19. Isolation, loneliness, anxiety, anger and fear are all experienced by young people and their families during and after cancer treatment. Covid has intensified these to unimaginable levels. APPLICATIONS are open for the RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Awards supported by Gallagher, which celebrate the outstanding achievements and promote the hard work of sailing clubs in the UK. All RYA affiliated clubs across the UK are eligible to apply and the Awards Panel will select a finalist for each of the 10 RYA Regions, as well as two ‘wild card’ entries. During the shortlisting stage, the panel will also provide five clubs with recognition for particular achievements in the following five areas: Heart of the community; Modern, innovative and forward thinking; Sustainability; Inclusive and open to all and Boosting membership. INNER city children’s sailing charity, Horizons Plymouth, which supports disadvantaged and disabled children from the inner city communities of Plymouth to experience sailing first hand, reopened its doors to local sailing cadets in July. Andrew Eccleston, chair of trustees at Horizons Plymouth, said: “Many of the children who participate at the club hugely benefit from regular contact with the team and from the life skills and confidence they build through sailing.” Simon Mace, Horizons’ operations manager, said: “We will be debriefing with our team after each session and the situation will be monitored continuously with any necessary alterations implemented as appropriate. Safety is at the forefront of our minds as we get back out on the water.” Horizons Plymouth is a year round club, and even when sailing is not practical, the

team provide land based excursions and team building adventures for their cadets. During the socially distant time the charity’s team of volunteers have been doing virtual catch ups with the children instead. The charity, based at Mayflower Marina, Plymouth, relies on both charitable donations and the dedication of their 60-strong team of volunteers to maintain the 3,000 sailing sessions that take place annually. British Sailing Team rider Ellie Aldridge took a silver medal from a ‘crazy and hectic’ final day at the 2020 Formula Kite European Championships in Puck, Poland - as Connor Bainbridge scooped bronze. The two medal haul marked a successful return to international competition for the British Sailing Team following a six month gap due to the pandemic. In what was a new format for the newest Olympic class, set to make its debut at Paris 2024, riders had to navigate a tough semifinal process to join the top two from qualifying to fight for medals.

BRITISH Youth Sailing has opened entries for the 2020 Regional Junior Championships – a series of regattas that form a festival of sailing for youngsters. Five regattas will take place over 26 - 27 September catering for youngsters who sail in the RS Tera Sport, Optimist, Topper and RS Feva classes. Each event will feature a championship fleet for seasoned racers and an OnBoard Fun fleet for first timers. A series of five events solely for windsurfers will also be held at different locations. In light of the pandemic, a number of precautions will be implemented to ensure the regattas remain safe and enjoyable. Numbers will be limited at each regatta and entry will be on a first come, first served basis. Events are also scheduled for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but because of the differing restrictions across the UK, details have not yet been finalised.

Results from the Regional Junior Championships will be considered by British Youth Sailing in issuing invites to the new BYS Regional Training Groups – a series of class-specific junior training groups aimed at reinvigorating regional and club racing in England. However, due to the limitations of the regattas, other factors such as results from secondary indicator events and demonstration of BYS values and behaviours will also be considered. Chris Atherton, RYA national performance manager, said: “The Regional Junior Championships will also mark the start of the new era for British Youth Sailing focusing on establishing Regional Training Groups to boost regional racing across England. If you want to be considered for a Regional Training Group, please make sure you apply online.”

RYA LAUNCHES SCHENGEN AREA SURVEY THE RYA has launched an online survey to gauge the impact of the Schengen agreement on the UK's recreational boaters. The survey, The UK has left the EU: The impact of Schengen rules on UK boaters, comes as government continues to negotiate the terms of the UK’s future relationship with the EU. Currently, the RYA understands that travel to the Schengen area will be visa free for UK citizens after the transition period ends on the 31 December 2020, however, it appears that improving access beyond that permitted under the EU wide Schengen 90/180-day rule is not part of the UK’s negotiations with the EU. If this is the case, then this will have a significant impact on UK citizens’ rights to travel in Europe after the end of transition, particularly those who wish to spend the summer, and possibly longer, in the EU27 on their boats, as many do now. Under current arrangements, EU citizens will be able to visit the UK on a standard visitor visa for six months at a time. The survey aims to gather reliable and

representative statistics to clarify the breadth of the issues involved. Participants of the survey will be asked to complete questions regarding topics such as the frequency of their boating trips abroad, the type of boat that they use and about their future travel plans for boating trips to the Schengen Area. RYA director of external affairs, Howard Pridding, said: “The RYA continues to engage with government about the need for further discussions surrounding access to the Schengen Area. We are aware that there is a considerable number of boaters who keep their vessels in an EU27 country and many more who spend extended periods cruising European waters. With this survey we hope to gain a better understanding of the actual size of the potential issue and how many recreational boaters could be adversely affected.” Access to the survey will be found via the RYA website www.rya.org.uk. JORDAN Wylie is attempting a world record by completing a full circumnavigation of Great Britain on a Standup Paddleboard in aid of Frontline Children. If successful, Jordan will be the first person to complete this challenge. Jordan, who is also one of the stars of Channel 4’s Hunted and Celebrity Hunted, is on a mission to inspire young people who have been displaced by the conflicts in Yemen and Somalia by building a school for refugees on the Horn of Africa. This year Jordan was scheduled to run marathons in the 10 coldest places on earth but, having completed

Siberia, Yukon, Alaska and Iceland, his plans came to a stop whilst on his way to the North Pole, when the world went into lockdown. Jordan will return to his polar running challenge in December by heading to Antarctica. In the meantime, in his role as the UK’s national ambassador for Army Cadets, Jordan came up with The Great British Paddle in his quest to inspire the young using the spirit of adventure. NEWS SNAPS COWES SUSPENSION Cowes Harbour Commission launched a public consultation this summer to ascertain stakeholders’ views about a potential combining of CHC with Cowes Town Waterfront Trust and a possible application to the Charity Commission, among other proposals. After careful consideration of all comments received, the Commissioners agreed to suspend further public consultation, allowing time for detailed consideration of the views received. They will review the position in 2021, with a possibility of restarting the consultation.

Wicklow Sailing Club’s 704nm SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race will now take place in June 2022. The original start date in June was postponed to 22 August, but the decision was taken to cancel this year’s race in response to concerns around the sharp rise in global Covid-19 cases.

THE RYA has published its guidance for a return to boating for crew from different households. The RYA strongly believes that the highest risk will often be before and after going afloat, which is why the security of venues remains a priority. The new guidance outlines the ways in which skippers and participants should review risks and how they might mitigate against them in a team environment. The guidance highlights the increased risk of certain on board activities such as rigging, hiking out or two person winch operation. It also recognises that while social distancing of 1m+ may not always be possible on board, it should always be possible to maintain a minimum separation of 0.5m. Mitigation of the risk of being separated by less than 1m can

be provided by reducing the time spent in close proximity, avoiding face-to-face contact and not shouting. One activity highlighted by the review that remains high risk, and for which there does not currently appear to be suitable mitigation is that of crews sleeping in communal areas down below on race yachts and the practice of ‘hot bunking’. Clearly it is not currently advisable for people from different households to share confined spaces for long periods of time. Clubs should be aware that the pace at which regulations are being eased varies considerably between the four nations and they should heed country specific guidance available on the RYA website. www.rya.org.uk/programmes/Pages/ return-to-boating.aspx

INTERNATIONAL conservation charity ZSL (Zoological Society of London), along with partners Blue Marine Foundation and British Marine, are celebrating after they received an award of £1,180,000 to boost British native oyster populations – the biggest project of its kind in the UK. The funding has been raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and awarded as part of the Dream Fund, which gives charities the opportunity to bring a dream project to life. It will help the Wild Oysters project to recover the native oyster populations, which in turn will see cleaner water, healthier fisheries and plentiful marine biodiversity in Britain. Across the UK wild native oysters (Ostrea edulis) have declined by more than 95 per cent, with the dramatic decrease due to a combination of overharvesting, habitat loss, pollution and disease. Healthy oyster beds,

however, are hugely productive and help a rich biodiversity of associated species to thrive. They provide important fish nursery ground habitat, supporting commercially important species such as seabass, bream and edible crabs. Bringing conservation and industry together, the partnership between ZSL, BLUE and British Marine will allow oyster nurseries, suspended under marina pontoons, to release the next generation of baby oysters to the seabed. The young oysters, known as spat, will settle across the three oyster reefs created across British Estuaries including the River Conwy (Wales), Firth of Clyde (Scotland) and Tyne and Wear coastal water body (England). The project will work together with local partners to commence the restoration of the 20,000km2 of oyster reefs that have been lost from around the coastline of Britain. www.zsl.org

WINNING DESIGN A young Cornish sailor, who was inspired by Ellen MacArthur’s autobiography whilst undergoing cancer treatment, has gone full circle after winning a Musto competition to design the official 2020 t-shirt for her heroine’s cancer charity. Romy Rundle, 16, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in her left leg in September 2018 and endured eight months of intensive treatment and surgery, including having an internal prosthesis fitted. Last summer, Romy, who had started learning to sail shortly before her diagnosis, went sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which supports young people in rebuilding their confidence after cancer. Musto invites the young people on each Trust sailing trip to create a design to sum up the difference the Trust has made to them. It was Romy’s symbolic sketch of a porthole surrounded by an inspirational line about how the Trust sparks new adventures for young

people during their cancer recovery that was this year’s official Musto Trust winner. Romy said: “I definitely kept sailing in my mind when I was going through treatment. It is what kept me going. I had Ellen’s Race Against Time book and I took that to every stay at the hospital.” Although not able to support young people in person this year, the Trust is running its first Virtual Summer, a programme of activities giving everyone the chance to still be part of the Trust community in 2020. This includes each young person, like Romy, who was due to return for a Trust trip this year receiving their Musto tee in the post. Romy had another dream come true this summer when she virtually met her heroine, Dame Ellen, on a special recording of the Trust’s podcast, Sound Waves, to celebrate the charity’s 17th birthday. www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org

Chichester Harbour Conservancy has installed a new pump out facility to its Itchenor jetty. The pump allows waste water to be quickly and easily drained from vessels directly into the sewage network, where it can then be managed and treated. The new pump out is available for use by all sailors and boaters in Chichester Harbour, and is free to use all year round.

NEW SPIRIT YACHT

Spirit Yachts has unveiled its largest motor yacht to date, the Spirit P70, following delivering to her owner. The 21.7m P70 was designed and built for an experienced motor yacht customer who requested an owner-driven yacht capable of cruising 1,000nm at an average of 18 knots across the North Sea, without having to refuel. As with all Spirit yachts, the P70 has been completely customised to suit the owner’s criteria. NEWS SNAPS RNLI BACK ON TV

Lifesavers from the RNLI will return to TV screens in the fifth series of the successful documentary Saving Lives at Sea. Now in its fifth series, the 10-part documentary showcases the lifesaving work of the RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards from around the UK and Ireland. Real life rescue footage captured on their helmet cameras gives a frontline view of the charity’s work. This will be accompanied by interviews from the lifeboat crews and lifeguards, alongside the people they rescue and their families. The series will air on BBC Two on Thursdays from 17 September at 8pm, as well as being available on BBC iPlayer following broadcast.

DESIGN A BURGEE

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour on the banks of the Beaulieu River. As part of the celebrations, a limited edition burgee will be given to all resident mooring holders to display on their boats, and the Yacht Harbour is asking for designs for the flag. It could incorporate the Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour logo, give a nod to its golden anniversary or reflect the colours, history or wildlife of the Beaulieu River. YOUNG sailors aged between 18 - 24 can apply to be part of the next cohort of British Keelboat Academy sailors. The RYA has been running a programme for young dinghy racers wanting to make the transition to yacht and keelboat racing for nearly 20 years. It has been such a success that graduates have gone on to hold top positions in some of the world’s biggest sailing events, such as the America’s Cup, The Ocean Race, the TP52 Super Series and Class 40. The programme is essentially in two parts: the first is a winter training programme where sailors are encouraged to try as many different roles as possible on various boats. In the second part, the sailors have the chance to work with

head coach, Niall Myant-Best, to ensure that their CV is up-to-date. It highlights the areas that will get them the most opportunities to develop the skills they have been practising over the winter. With places in the BKA oversubscribed last year by 2:1 there is a selection weekend (7 - 8 November), which up to 60 sailors will be invited to. It will consist of a day on shore working with experts to learn about areas such as high-tech ropes, deck hardware and handling sails. The second day will be on the water working with coaches and mentors and getting a chance to try out various roles. Applications close on 27 September. www.britishkeelboatacademy.co.uk

CHAMPIONSHIPS 'COMING HOME' THE iconic Eric Twiname Junior Championships will be a ‘homecoming’ in 2021, with the event hosted by Bassenthwaite Sailing Club, home club of the late Eric Twiname. The annual event will take place over the Early May Bank Holiday on Bassenthwaite Lake, near Cockermouth, Cumbria, for the first time since 1991. Seen as a rite of passage for young racing sailors, the regatta brings together hundreds of talented youngsters from all over the country to vie for the title of top region as well as podium places in the British Youth Sailing Recognised Classes. Sailing stars Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy were among the early winners of the regatta before going on to Olympic success. The Eric Twiname Junior Championships was named in honour of sailor, author and journalist Eric Twiname. He made his name in sailing,

winning numerous national titles in a range of dinghy classes, as well as in team racing where he captained the British Universities Sailing Association. He was also greatly influential in shaping the Racing Rules that govern racing in the UK, sitting on the RYA’s Racing Rules Committee and working as the Racing Rules Advisor to the British Olympic Association. Bruce Aitken, secretary for The Eric Twiname Trust, said: “I speak for everyone at the Eric Twiname Trust when I say congratulations to Bassenthwaite Sailing Club. Eric enjoyed many years at Bassenthwaite and for his championships to return is something he would be so proud of.” The ET Championships has been held at Rutland Sailing Club from 2003 and, after a brief hiatus for the 2021 event, will return as hosts for the 2022 and 2023 editions.

POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTH’S ENGINE NEWS.

1ST MATE

There is an old adage that states ‘power is worthless without control’. This sentiment is being applied to safety too, with innovations coming through to make running a motorboat or powerboat safer with every passing year. First of all we had the simple dead man kill switches incorporated into all kinds of motors, including small horsepower outboards. These were then backed up by several types of electronic kill cord linked to proximity key fobs and various variations on the theme. Each of these really only protected the person at the helm as the safety system was initiated by their movement. Things have been taken a stage further with the launch by Mercury of their 1st Mate system. This new app based system uses the proximity security fob that still acts as an anti-theft system, with enhanced security built in, but more of that later. The main, or Captain’s, fob is worn by the helm, and linked to this are up to seven other fobs

worn by other personnel on the boat. The fobs are linked through a designated mobile device, currently on the IOS system, but Android is under rapid development. Should a passenger or passengers go overboard the system sounds an alarm, sends alerts and, additionally, provides a GPS location for each casualty to facilitate location and faster recovery. Should the skipper go overboard for any reason the system immediately stops the engines, sounds the alarm and sends alerts to chosen outlets. In addition, through the 1st Mate app, instructions are sent to the remaining passengers as to the operation of the craft, including how to restart the engines and safely steer the boat back to the overboard skipper. The system can also send a distress message after a countdown timer expires or a designated request is made. The anti-theft aspect is designed to prevent unauthorised use by locking the engines until the captain fob is within proximity. If the engines are removed from the boat the system requires a handshake link between the engines and the 1st Mate to reactivate the ability to fire the engines up.

FOR THE ADRENALINE JUNKIES YAMAHA have released two new speed machines for the motorcyclists of the water, utilising completely new engines. I can remember the first stand-up jet skis being introduced to the UK; from those days in the mid 1980s things have progressed massively. The new Super Jet from Yamaha utilises a brand new four-stroke triple of 1049cc, designated the TR-1 marine (to me a TR-1 is a 1000cc Vee twin motorcycle). The hull is a new design of lightweight composite that provides agility and straight line stability that perfectly complements the smooth power delivery from the powerful three cylinder engine that provides a maximum speed of 56mph. The entire package weighs just 170kgs, which means it can be transported easily in a small van, SUV or on the deck of a boat. In the past this

type of standup craft has been used primarily in competitions and by skilful, fit people, but this SuperJet comes with a beamier hull making it easier to use. For newcomers, there is a switchable L mode that limits the performance to about 35 knots, making it easier to gain confidence and learn the basics of showing off. A 19 litre fuel tank provides plenty of range, and a low fuel warning will give ample time to arrange refuelling with standard 95RON unleaded. If you do not like doing it standing up, then maybe one from the four ranges of the new model Waverunner will allow you to sit down on the job and satisfy your thrill threshold. At the sensible end of the spectrum lies the EX range, utilising the same TR-1 three cylinder engine

as used in the SuperJet - with a 50 litre fuel tank it can provide hours of fun per tankful. As you go up the range you get more features, and with the EXR 10 per cent more power. The VX range offers more features, more fuel and more fun from the high output TR-1 engine in a mid-range package. The FX range is for those more experienced in the handling of these high performance PWCs, featuring a 4-cylinder 1800cc engine in various states of tune according to the model. Trim, electronics and upholstery differ across each range. The top spec FX SVHO Limited is a fire breathing dragon with an ultimate luxury package wrapped around the 1800cc supercharged engine married to an uprated jet unit for truly breathtaking performance over 60mph. For the ultimate in performance the GP range is a two-seater for those who accept no compromise. Let the fun commence.

SAILING DIVERSITY Here is the incredibly inspiring story of how an inner city London school’s students have followed their dream of succeeding in a sport perceived as challenging to break into. every race. But to access the sport can still be expensive, and so David Franks provided them with a fully funded Etchells, year in, year out.

h sir, you forgot to mention Pamela in your talk, she was very good to me….” This is a typical comment/complaint from our young crew following one of our many talks at the Greig City Academy. “I cannot believe we forgot to mention Spinlock. They have done so much for us - all that lifesaving safety gear for the Fastnet…” “You must make sure you get in about David Bedford as we are very lucky to have a coach of that standard.” The global issue of racism, institutional or overt, is right at the top of the agenda for most sporting governing bodies. Discussions range from immediate incidents to the nature of structures within institutions and the opportunities provided. Sailing has a unique challenge in many regards. Historically it is seen as a white, wealthy sport, which is difficult to break into and very expensive to progress in. So, what are the barriers to getting into the sport? Every sport will claim it is the most demanding, but in sailing we have the unique danger of nature. We are in a sport where the bar has to be set at a certain level, and to reduce this would be to introduce danger. These issues and the way we conquer them is not the purpose of this article. We have our programme for overcoming this, but the issues of opportunity for BAME aspiring sailors are more complicated. Let us look at the reality for our teammates, younger and older, in the Scaramouche sailing project. Our team is 90 per cent black and 100 per cent BAME. We also have a big number of young sailors, so we are well placed to share our experience.

INTEGRATION IS KEY

When we decided, after the Fastnet, that we would try to crack on in dinghy sailing in 420s and a 29er we needed the right advice. What do the likes of David Bedford, Matt Reid, Martin Evans all have in common? They are all hugely

experienced, decorated and established in the sport. But in all cases, they refused to discriminate for us by attempting to lower the bar. To do that would have been to produce a group of sailors who would inevitably be the weakest link. David Franks cracked the problem. The word integration not separation was used. If the lads were spread out between other boats, rather than have them altogether in one, that would make them the weakest link by virtue of

experience on the boats. David’s answer was to put them together and then put in a good coach. That he then sourced a world class coach was testament to his desire to make it work. It was a major turning point. The enthusiasm of students Montel (now a coach with the Scaramouche Sailing Trust) and Camillo was matched by the experience of coach Matt Reid. Suddenly it was a sport. The boys were highly competitive and learning from

My fellow sailor, Kai, and I refer to the 420 and 29er as ‘our curriculum’, but for enjoying another side of the sport we have our Intro 22 Riot. This is a boat which is 45-years-old and worth, well nothing! With our experience, winning in dinghies could be years away, but with the right strategy, advice and intellect, winning a race on IRC handicap is possible. We started a tidal wave of focus on getting this old boat as fast as possible, while keeping the rating low. There was lots of learning, of course, but the cloud of expense was always going to catch up with us, until North Sails stepped in. Having already provided sails for Scaramouche years earlier, they agreed to make a complete set of sails for our boat. This donation opened our eyes. Suddenly we were getting a tour of the company’s factory, which has branches all over the world. It was inspiring stuff to see jobs which we could realistically do and enjoy, rather than the usual London companies giving talks in schools about jobs which do not excite a lot of kids. But with our new sails came a renewed justification for working on ‘our boat’. The sight of us all scraping,

filling and fairing over 10 days to make the hull as smooth as possible is the thankless task ‘proper’ sailors know and talk about. We feel we have joined the sailing community - shown by having tried so many combinations of crew, sails and so on. We have finally realised what every sailor knows - a boat will never be ‘finished’!

COMMUNITY & BELONGING

Institutionally there are, of course, barriers. It feels like our opportunity to progress in some elements of the sport has passed us by. It is true that to progress in dinghies to national standards there is a need for transport, a boat and so on from a young age, which does need to be overcome. But these BAME sailors have seen what they can do in dinghies and followed other routes with bigger boats to achieve life enhancing outcomes. One aspect of increasing diversity within sailing has as much to do with the social side. Feeling ‘at home’ before and after sailing, at the social events is important. We have witnessed the efforts of Lymington Town Sailing Club to breakdown all of these barriers. With an active dinghy racing scene, they provide mass participation as well as high standards. By enabling a rolling membership for our team, they have overcome barriers to feeling a sense of belonging. To reinforce this, the full

What we could not have imagined would be Spinlock supplying deck vests, buoyancy aids and deck gear several times, and then servicing them.

SUPPORT OF SAILING

Whether any of the donations of time, equipment or finance were intended to specifically help young sailors of BAME backgrounds or whether they were intended to help enthusiastic young sailors does not really matter. It has achieved that outcome, so they are examples of major internationally recognised sailing organisations who have helped level the playing field in an overt and also institutional way. Me and my teammates have been able to access the sport and have a route through provided by ‘the industry’. When people consider discrimination against the BAME population, maybe they assume sailing has a problem. My teammates range in age from 11 to now 20. None of us has ever felt discriminated against - actually it is the opposite. We have found the sailing community (of which we are now part) to be positively helping young sailors like us, even if they do not intend to as their main objective. The challenge is to get other black youngsters to try the sport, and we know that if they do they will be provided with life changing opportunities. On more specific levels, though, you hear stories like that of our teammate Jessye. He has his Topper, dug out of a field in Muswell Hill and restored by himself. He wanted a challenge, so one freezing, drizzly Saturday morning at 6am (to be with the tide) he set off in his Topper and sailed by himself to Lymington. Not a national standard bit of sailing, but a personal challenge for him, completed out of sight of everyone. Until of course he entered the Lymington Town Sailing Club clubhouse to rapturous applause. Sometimes it is the small gestures that can build self-esteem.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS

You cannot analyse participation in sailing without reference to money. Sailing is expensive and getting into it and accessing it needs things like transport and accommodation. Sometimes making change needs what Darren Doherty described as ‘heavy lifting’. He has a keen interest in sailing and works in Lloyds of London’s Dual Group. He is someone who ‘gets it’ and has been outspoken about the need to increase the diversity of the City of London. As a member of the Lloyds Sailing Club he hired the yacht Lutine for Cowes Week, providing a key breakthrough for Greig’s Montel Fagan-Jordan, who went on to become the Young Sailor of the Year; the first black Afro-Caribbean sailor to achieve this prestigious award. Darren saw a process that achieved through sailing what he believes would benefit business. As a thoroughly practical ‘doer’ he recognised that for our BAME sailing team, money was also safety. More funding meant more surveys than were needed, but then with this comes a safety net. He provided that twice, keeping the project afloat. Safety is the biggest barrier for any parent who does not have an in-depth knowledge of the sport. Safety is our biggest concern being a school. Having completed a rough Fastnet it is at the top of our minds.

THE SCARAMOUCHE SAILING TRUST The programme was kick started in 2014 when Jon Holt, Greig City Academy’s Head of Outdoor Education, was driving students down from North London to Poole for sailing weekends. They loved getting out on the water and some of them wanted to take it further. They bought an old 22ft yacht on eBay and spent the summer getting her seaworthy. By June 2015, the students had the ambition to be the first state school to complete the Fastnet. The next step was to purchase Scaramouche, a 45ft Admirals Cup yacht built in 1981. They rolled up their sleeves to get to work again and they spent just as much time training up Scaramouche’s crew of GCA school students. In 20 they finished th in class in the ound the Island ace the youngest crew ever to complete the ace and the following year placed well in the C ualifying races around the Channel. Then on August 20 their dream came true as they steered Scaramouche over the Fastnet start line. ive days later they became the first comprehensive state school crew to finish it placed out of 3 2 starters. ince then they have gone from strength to strength. One of their sailors, Montel Fagan-Jordan, won the YJA Young Sailor of the Year Award and they completed back-to-back Fastnets in 2019. They have students sailing at all levels, from dinghies in the local reservoir to national level 20s uibs ragons training yachts as well as offshore. ome have even gone on to careers in the marine industry. BOATING PEOPLE Q&A with British Marine’s CEO, Lesley Robinson.

What can we expect this September at BOATS2020 presented by Southampton International Boat Show Ltd?

BOATS2020 is the boat show event taking place this year, following the postponement of Southampton International Boat Show. Visitors can expect a safe and quality day of viewing and browsing the latest new boats and marine products, knowing that the event is fully endorsed by Southampton City Council and that it meets Public Health England Covid-19 safety requirements. We have put in place all the Covid secure measures that are required and visitors would expect, to reassure everyone planning to attend. There are an outstanding number of brands on show on the water and in a safe environment in Mayflower Park, between 11 - 20 September. Tickets are available to book online at www.boats2020.co.uk. This year, due to the restrictions, they are limited and strictly available only in advance. We expect them to be snapped up quickly, so I would advise anyone interested to jump online as soon as they can. More than 90 boats are joining the show line-up as well as over 60 onshore exhibitors with all the latest marine kit and equipment. The diverse range of brands makes the show a must-go event for boat buyers and watersports enthusiasts keen to see the latest boats and equipment. We look forward to seeing you there.

What is your boating background?

I fell in love with sailing in my 20s when a then boyfriend introduced me to it. I spent a lot of time sailing in and around the Solent, with a bit of racing thrown in, but I am more a fair-weather cruiser than racer! I was lucky enough to bareboat in the Med and Caribbean a number of times and loved it. Since 2015 my husband and I have been living on the south coast, and I am hoping to spend more time boating. I recently took up paddleboarding and love this too.

What does the average day as CEO of British Marine involve?

It sounds clichéd but really no day is ever the same and I love that. During the last few months, I have spent much of my time on Zoom and Teams calls with our members, the various British Marine associations and, of course, with the British Marine team. I liaise regularly with the British Marine Board and Council and also meet all sorts of stakeholders such as MPs, other leisure marine CEOs and local authorities. I also talk about our industry and events that we are promoting in the media.

undertaken further market research to gain a greater understanding of the general public’s attitudes, barriers and motivations for participation in boating and watersports to assist with targeting recruitment, retention and marketing strategies. It highlighted that social challenges and finding the time to do boating and watersports impacted females more than males. The research also shows possible solutions to these barriers. One example is that participating in short, on-the-water taster sessions appeal 11 per cent more to females than males. British Marine shares this kind of information with its members and the industry to ensure that businesses are aware of these trends. They can use the information to their advantage to provide the right products and services, send the right messages to their customers and meet their needs, and thus attract more females. More research and initiatives like this will need to continue to help address the male/female balance in boating and watersports.

You have been CEO of British Marine for a couple of years now. What changes have you made or still would like to introduce?

I am extremely proud that in early 2020 British Marine introduced our National Agenda which outlines, for the first time, the mission of British Marine to play a significant and measurable role in supporting our members and the wider marine industry, and deliver our vision of a thriving industry delivering amazing on water experiences for everyone. The National Agenda

You have a love of travelling. Obviously, this year that has not been , would be your dream destination?

I am keen to get to Borneo – it was planned for this year for my husband’s big birthday present, but of course has been postponed. We are hoping to go in 2021 now. Wherever I travel I always end up on the water somehow – for this trip it will be into the rainforest by dugout canoe.

What would you suggest to anyone thinking of starting a career in the marine industry?

I would say go for it! So many diverse career opportunities are available in the leisure, small commercial and superyacht industry. More than 4,600 companies with a combined worth of over £3 billion have a variety of career opportunities that could suit nearly anyone. The industry is also at the forefront of innovation, pioneering new technology, world renowned craftsmanship and a world leader in design. There are also fantastic opportunities for people preparing to leave school or looking to change careers, as the marine industry offers a range of apprenticeship opportunities. Apprentices spend time in the classroom as well as out in the field, getting first-hand experience in a range of work activity areas.

What do you think the long-term impact of Covid-19 on the marine industry will be?

Boating has traditionally been seen as male dominated. Clearly this has changed, but what further changes do you believe are needed? British Marine is part of a cross industry group that carries out the National Watersports Survey each year. The Survey seeks to benchmark participation rates and monitor trends, including gender splits, for the benefit of the industry, user groups and individual interest. The last Survey showed that the number of women participating increased significantly. This is good news, but there is more to be done. British Marine has also

sets out our deliverables, both for the year ahead and looking into the future areas where our members want us to focus, and we are due to report on our firstyear progress (2019/20) this autumn. Participation is one of the key themes in the National Agenda now and for the future. Boaters want to see their hobby thrive, their clubs full and marine products and services tailored to their wants and needs, maximising ease and enjoyment. This is where the work of British Marine comes into play through guiding our member businesses into delivering all of this, in a synergistic and cohesive way. British Marine shares industry trends, stimulates innovation, puts on events and brings together members – sharing knowledge and experiences. Beyond this we have also changed the way British Marine works – we really want to put our members first and at the heart of all that we do. To begin this work, we have evolved our member packages to make them more cost effective and relevant, and we are improving our digital communications. As a team we want to spend more time on member matters so have been improving our back-office systems to help generate efficiencies, and we have just moved to a much smaller office on to the south coast, making us closer to our national boat show site for the Southampton International Boat Show. Going forward there is much more to do. For example, I want to build on the ‘boost’ that boating participation has received this summer and through our #SummerOnTheWater campaign (SummeOnTheWater.com) and encourage those who have tried the water for the first time to stay with us.

It is going to take time to gain a full picture of the impact of Covid on the UK leisure marine industry – indeed the situation is still unfolding at present. Over the summer, once the short-term impact of the virus passed and boating was able to open up again, many of our members reported a strong demand for boats, equipment and boating holidays. It seems that although certain overseas destinations are now permissible, many Brits opted to play it safe and staycation for this and possibly next year. I also understand from members that marinas have been very busy and demand for entry-level boats and watersports equipment has been surging. However, the prosperity of the marine industry is dependent on a sustainable customer base. We want the industry to sustain and grow boating activity, and there is lots to do in this area and even more so since Covid. To begin addressing this, British Marine launched the #SummerOnTheWater campaign that is all about kick starting our industry again and reaching out to a new audience of potential watersports participants. With the ease of lockdown and increased demand for staycations and entry-level boating equipment, along with the well-known advantages of being on the water and wellbeing, the campaign raises awareness of watersports in the UK. www.britishmarine.co.uk

“God Bless the Air Sea Rescue, No finer folk than we, We always bring our catch in, For breakfast, dinner, tea…”

o starts an increasingly bawdy wartime song that poked fun at the perceived glamour and easy life of the Air-Sea Rescue Service. The reality, however, was very different, with the task of rescuing downed airmen from the waters around our coasts being one of long hours spent searching, often in very bad weather, with the ever present fear of being attacked by enemy forces. During the years of WW1, little thought was given to a co-ordinated service tasked with rescuing fliers who had ‘ditched’ into the sea, for the simple reason that the majority of the air actions took place over land, despite these first generation war planes being just as likely to be downed by mechanical failure as by enemy action. It was not that the newly formed RAF lacked access to boats, as they had their own Marine Craft Section, but these were mainly harbour launches, which were slow, without any on board communications and with few having the capability to operate out of sight of land.

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

Yet the growing importance of aircraft to the military meant that something needed to be done, but it would be none other than Aircraftsman Shaw, the new name and identity for none other than Lawrence of Arabia, who would bring so many loose ends together. Disconsolate at the post-war treatment of the Middle East, Lawrence had struggled to find a suitable role in peacetime, but he would soon make a huge impact when he joined the RAF. Whilst on station at RAF Calshot, located at the confluence of the Solent and Southampton Water, he witnessed one

of the tragedies that all too often beset the aircraft of the day, when a machine crashed landed into the water. A launch was dispatched, yet despite the wreckage being within sight of land, by the time the rescuers reached the crew they had already drowned. Lawrence/Shaw believed if a high speed launch, equipped to effect rescue, had been available and on standby, that the time saved would have seen the aircraft crew safely recovered. Luckily for the RAF, Lawrence/Shaw already enjoyed a friendship with Hubert Scott-Paine who, having been the owner of the iconic Supermarine aircraft company during WW1, had now sold it and moved just a few miles from Woolston across Southampton Water to Hythe.

HIGH SPEED LAUNCHES

It was here that Scott-Paine built the factory that became the British Power Boat Company (which will be the subject of an upcoming Dougal on Tour), the birthplace of so many race winning and record breaking powerboats. The result of the Lawrence/Shaw collaboration with Scott-Paine would be the Type 200 high speed launch. These 37ft long powerboats were constructed of diagonally laid up mahogany planks, with an extra layer to the skin on the underwater sections of the chined planing hull form. The Type 200s were equipped with twin 100hp Meadows engines, which allowed the boats to cruise at 24kt, giving them a range of 140 miles. Further tests, however, on Southampton Water showed that the boats could reach speeds of 36kt, an incredible speed for a work launch in the early 1930s.

Then, as now, there would be issues with the supply of goods to the military, with repeated specification changes post contract. However, the demand for an effective seaborne rescue platform would prevail, with orders coming in firstly for the Type 200 launches, then for the much larger and more powerful Type 100s. At 64ft long and with a 14ft beam, the Type 100s were powered by a triple powerhouse consisting of three Napier Sea

Lion engines, with each of these developing 500hp, and together they could push the well equipped boats along at close to 40kt, with a 500 mile range.

RESCUE CAPABILITIES

The downside was that although the Type 100s had super sea-keeping capabilities at speed, they were less than helpful when stopped to rescue airmen out of the water. John Parsons, who had served as a coxswain

on wartime ASR launches, recalls that: “Whilst good at speed, none better, when you were actually involved in a rescue they would roll and pitch. The deck was too high out of the water, making it difficult to haul someone aboard.” With the UK now at war with Germany, a further issue with the Type 100s became apparent. To get the extended range the boats had tankage for more than 4,000 gallons of high-octane fuel, and with only minimal armour cladding, for the crews of the these boats the sensation was akin to ‘sitting on a bomb’. Then, in the summer of 1940, came the Battle of Britain, with much of the conflict taking place over the waters of the North Sea and Channel, and though the boats were busy, the realisation dawned that the high-performance Napier engines needed constant maintenance, which heavily reduced the ‘service availability’ of boats. In the four months of the Battle of Britain, more than 200 pilots were lost at sea, a factor which was behind the formation of the highly organised Air-Sea Rescue Service, with their wonderful motto of ‘The sea shall not have them’. One of the stalwarts of the ASR would be the Type Two high speed launch, which was nicknamed ‘The Whaleback’ due to its highly distinctive sheerline. With a crew of nine, Whalebacks and other ASR launches would serve around UK coasts, the Mediterranean, Far East and wherever there could be a need for downed flight crew to be rescued.

It was only when Phil Clabburn started out on the restoration of this boat that the fully history started to emerge. Documentary evidence shows that Aircraftsman Shaw (aka Lawrence of Arabia) has a long and close association with this boat. The cessation of hostilities would coincide with a far greater reliability of modern aircraft and the rapid development of the helicopter, all of which would reduce the need for a dedicated fleet of high-speed launches. By the 1970s superb helicopters, such as the Westland Sea King, had taken on the search and rescue function, with the aging Air Sea Rescue launches being used for non-front line activities, such as target towing. In 1986, the RAF’s Marine Branch was finally disbanded, with any remaining launches being retired. But they have not been forgotten, for in recent years a number of these iconic boats have been saved from either use as houseboats or the breakers yard, instead falling into the hands of top powerboat restorer Phil Clabburn, who has an enviable reputation as the man who saved the boats that saved the airmen. he marine industry provides a huge and diverse range of employment opportunities, both in the UK and overseas. From high-speed experience rides, eco-tourism and windfarm boats, to racing charters on the Solent and skippering superyachts around the globe, there really is a career for every taste. In 2018, Trinity House and the RYA teamed up to launch the Trinity House RYA Yachtmaster™ Scholarship, an initiative for those working or aspiring to work on the water. Three years on, the career boosting scholarship has seen 12 grants awarded, aiding career progression through opportunities for further training. As the closing date for the next round of applications approaches, we spoke to some of the previous grant recipients to find out just how far they have come…

“As a young child I spent much of my time on the water with Hamble Sea Scouts, where I took part in many different types of watersports, but I have always been passionate about sailing,” explained 20-year-old yacht maintenance technician, Will Holland. As he grew up, Will became a leader for the Sea Scouts and qualified as an RYA Powerboat and Dinghy Instructor, running RYA courses and sailing sessions for other young people. “I enjoy the experience of teaching and watching the students progress into independent sailors,” he added. Since being awarded the scholarship grant last December, Will has completed his RYA Yachtmaster™ shorebased course, passed his RYA Yachtmaster™ Coastal Certificate of Competence and is now working towards taking his RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore exam. In his current role, Will is responsible for commissioning new yachts, carrying out maintenance on a number of others and also occasionally crews on yacht deliveries. “At the moment my work is really varied, which has been great for furthering my knowledge, particularly of race yachts,” Will explained. In building his sea miles in preparation for the RYA Yachtmaster™ exams, Will has found a real passion for racing, competing in both the Round the Island Race and Cowes Week last year. “I am still trying to gain as much experience of yacht systems as possible and developing my experience as a skipper. I would ideally like to work on race yachts, and hope to end up being in charge of my own yacht or race yacht not too long from now. “The scholarship is a fantastic opportunity for someone at the start of their career in the small commercial vessel sector like me. I do not believe I would have made such progress without it, and would definitely recommend applying to anyone who is looking to work in the marine industry.”

Manager for the Scottish Association for Marine Science. Her career has seen her work all over the world, conducting scientific research in both the Arctic and Antarctic. Before joining SAMS, Sarah was based at the Rothera Research Station with the British Antarctic Survey. During her time there, she skippered and crewed the RIBs for various professional scientific dives and surveys as the team conducted oceanography and sea ice dives. A lover of the outdoors, Sarah enjoys spending time out in the mountains or building her sailing hours on the Sadler 25 yacht, which was her home when she first moved to Oban. Keen to progress her career in the marine industry, she applied for the grant and was awarded funds in May 2019. Sarah said: “I love living and working on the West Coast of Scotland; for some reason I seem to be drawn to cold places! I would love to go back and work in the Polar Regions where I can really test my skillset and build on the knowledge that I have been working on over the last few years.” With the scholarship funding, Sarah has completed the RYA Radar and RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities courses. She has also gained her RYA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence and is hoping to do a prep week for the RYA Yachtmaster™ Coastal once coronavirus restrictions are further eased. “Everything has been a bit put back by Covid, but I am still moving forward,” said Sarah. “Hopefully over the winter I will be

able to complete my RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore and will then be able to skipper the SAMS vessels. “It is good to remember that within the world of working on the water, there are lots of different paths you can take – it is not just the military or superyachts!” explained Sarah. “There is everything from commercial skippering on wildlife survey boats, to working on fish farms, dive boats and many more. The industry is growing in so many different sectors, and if you love working outside, within dynamic teams and testing your skills in all sorts of weather conditions, then this is definitely a great career-building scholarship.”

Skilled boaters who can prove their dedication to the marine industry could be eligible for a share of the annual £30,000 scholarship fund provided by maritime charity, Trinity House. The next round of applications closes on 11 September. Applications should be supported by an endorsement from the principal of one of the RYA’s network of RYA recognised training centres, where candidates will have shown exceptional boating, navigation and/or leadership skills. There are several marine businesses on-site or close-by ready to assist berth holders and visiting boats alike. Whether you need a spare shackle from the boat store, engineering expertise from Marine Power or a taste of adrenaline with Adventure4All, the marina has got you covered. to boat cleaning products. You will find everything you need to get your maintenance and repairs done in no time, so you can get back out where you want to be – on the water. There is also Apollo Marine chandlery just across the road from the marina entrance, plus there are riggers, sailmakers and electricians available in the local area. To keep your boat well-vitalled, there is a Lidl five minutes’ walk from the marina, just past the National Sailing Academy or, for a pint of milk and Sunday paper, there is the Premier corner shop in Castletown a 15 minute stroll away.

BERTHING & STORAGE

Space and depth is not an issue at Portland, which makes it popular with multihulls. There are 300 berths in the residential area ranging from 6 to 25m, and the marina can

accommodate larger vessels up to 40m on hammerhead pontoons. With a dedicated visitors’ area of alongside berths there is also space for larger visiting vessels. More berths are planned on the south side of the marina, which will be going in over the next few years. Ashore, the marina has a drystack facility that can house 130 motorboats up to 9m, with unlimited launch and recovery and a wash down after each lift before your boat is returned to the stack. If you want to tinker, it also has several working racks so you can access your boat on dry land. They do allow a limited number of liveaboards at Portland, who have created a great community, always looking out for each other – particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst the marina does welcome liveaboards, each case is assessed individually.

ACCESS

If you are accessing Portland Marina by sea, follow the recommended channel from the north entrance of the harbour breakwater marked with red buoys and a safe water mark. You can also use the east entrance, but it is recommended to contact Portland Port on VHF Ch74 before entering or leaving via this entrance, to ensure you do not come nose-to-nose with something big coming the other way. The south entrance is blocked by a sunken ship and a wire running across the entrance, so is only accessible to small motor vessels. The port has several exclusion zones in the harbor, and there is a six knot speed limit as you approach the marina, marked by yellow buoys. Give the team a call on VHF Ch80 or

01305 866 190 when you are adjacent to the swinging moorings by the marina entrance on the north side of the breakwater. If you are coming by land, Weymouth has good train links with London and the marina is a short taxi ride away from the station. By car, follow the A35 to Dorchester, then the A354 to Weymouth and onward across the causeway to Portland. The marina is just off the first roundabout, past Lidl and the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

CRUISING

The Channel ports are your oyster when cruising from Portland. The West Country and Brittany are fantastic areas with various creeks, crannies and unspoilt harbours to explore.

Closer to home there are several bays to the east, perfect for lunchtime BBQs and peaceful overnight stops with stunning views along this UNESCO World Heritage protected coastline. Ringstead, Warbarrow and Mupe Bays are all worth a visit when the weather is calm, along with the famous Lulworth Cove. The Solent and Poole are both within easy reach or head round the Bill (get your tides right and it is a doddle) or straight out across to the Channel Islands with Lyme Regis and the English Riviera of Torquay and Brixham to the west or Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Herm and Sark all only a day’s sail away. For some, Portland Bill via the inside passage sends shivers of dread down their spine; in reality, provided the

wind and tidal conditions are right, there is nothing to fear. Stay close in and aim to round at slack water, whichever direction you are heading. In strong winds, particularly south or south-westerlys, it is best to avoid the inshore passage if you are unsure. The bays along the coast between Portland and St Aldhelm’s Head are exposed to any winds from a southerly directions and are best visited in calm and stable weather. The prevailing wind and swell direction is from the south west here and can kick up a good sized swell, which can make for an uncomfortable night at anchor, even in Lulworth Cove, which looks to be more protected. That same wind and swell direction can make for an uncomfortable crossing of Lyme Bay with the only real shelter found once you reach Torbay.

For seafood lovers and hungry sailors there are several eateries within easy walking distance. On-site at the marina there is The Boat That Rocks bar and restaurant, where you can watch the comings and goings of local boats with a glass of something chilled in hand, and Taylor’s Mess Deck café, perfect for brunch, lunch or coffee and cake. Five to 10 minutes of walking will bring you to Quiddles Beach Bar and Café and The Cove House Inn, offering fantastic views over Chesil Beach and Lyme Bay, the perfect spot for sundowners. Or head along the causeway to Billy Winters Diner and watch the local wind and kitesurf experts show off their moves. For a special meal, the Crabhouse Café offers fine dining with views across

THINGS TO DO

Portland Harbour has been an important naval base since the days of Henry VIII, who built Portland and Sandsfoot Castles to protect it from Spanish invasion. It was the largest man-made harbour in the world when the breakwater was completed in 1872, and was an important naval base until

the military withdrew operations here in the mid-90s. In particular, Portland Harbour played a major role in the D-Day preparations and was a point of embarkation for many American troops headed for the Normandy beaches. The D-Day museum in nearby Castletown preserves the role the local area played, including two Phoenix caissons that made up the Mulberry Harbour anchored adjacent to Portland Castle, which also act as a windbreak for ships berthing in Portland Port. There is plenty of history at Portland Marina, it is in the stones! Most of London was rebuilt with Portland stone after the great fire, and it is still quarried today. Disused quarries are now nature reserves or sculpture parks and worth a wander round if you have the time.

For walking enthusiasts, the coastal path around the island is a must-do; follow the sun and start on the east side up the disused railway of the Merchant’s Incline and along the undulating path to Church Ope Cove and on to the Bill. The Lobster Pot is the perfect stop for a cream tea to fuel up for the walk back to the marina along the west side of the island. If you have time and energy, there is an easy 5k walk into Weymouth along the Rodwell Trail, which pops you out across the road from Portland’s sister marina in Weymouth, and the train station. For a slice of history, take the ferry from the marina to Weymouth’s Brewer’s Quay; My Girl was used as a troop supply boat during WWII.

For those looking for adventure, there is climbing, coasteering, windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddle sports. Adventure4All are based at the marina and can show you the ropes if you are keen to have a go. If you prefer your thrills wind-powered, the OTC at the National Sailing Academy can help. There is also diving and deep sea fishing charters available from the marina. Buses run on a regular service between Portland and Weymouth every 20 minutes with stops at Victoria Square and outside the National Sailing Academy. The seasonal 501 service runs to Portland Bill during school holidays and weekends in the summer with an additional stop at Portland Castle. Local taxi companies are Weyline or Nicky’s Taxi.

PREMIER Marinas is offering boat owners’ savings on secure winter berthing at eight of the group’s nine South Coast marinas - including a choice of two special winter berthing offers and seasonal boatyard discounts. Berthing prices start from £189 per month for boats up to 8m with 10m berths on offer from £221 per month (based on the six month package). The company’s discounted six month winter berthing package is available for boats between 6.5 and 18m* and runs from 1 October 2020 to 31 March 2021. The package, which includes 28 days complimentary storage ashore (to be taken within the six-month berthing period) represents Premier’s most cost effective winter berthing. Fees are paid in full ahead of arrival at the marina and there are no refunds for late arrivals or early departures. For boat owners who prefer a bit more flexibility, Premier is offering monthly winter berthing for boats up to 18m* from 1 November 2020 to 31 March 2021, with a minimum stay of one month. After the first month’s berthing, customers can opt to extend

their stay on a monthly basis to a maximum of five months. Contracts can start on any day and customers who pay in advance for three months or more can choose to store their boat ashore for 28 days with no additional charge – as part of the booked period*. These offers are bound to be popular, especially amongst boat owners who habitually summer in harbours on pile and swinging moorings and then look for a snug winter berth with electricity and water on hand. All the winter berthing locations have welcoming cafes after a cold day at work in the yard. They also have experienced yard teams, modern lifting equipment, high pressure wash hull cleaning equipment, well maintained steel cradles and a host of marine tenants on hand for winter layup jobs and routine maintenance. One of the most beautiful destinations on the south coast, Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is halfway through a £2m redevelopment plan to increase capacity and improve services on the Beaulieu River.

ince opening in 1971, Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour had remained largely unaltered. With the changing nature of modern boating, they are now undertaking a major new development to increase their berths by 66 to a total of 264. The work, which began in October 2019, is being undertaken in two offseason phases to minimise disruption. The newly extended marina features a dedicated visitor area, upgraded electrical services and deeper berths to allow larger vessels to take advantage of the new walk-ashore pontoons. Other enhancements include clearly separated tender areas and upgraded WiFi services. Beaulieu Enterprises managing director Russell Bowman said: “We are pleased to mark this milestone in the redevelopment, allowing us to offer our customers greater choice and accessibility while keeping a similar look and feel to the existing yacht harbour.”

ADAPTING TO CIRCUMSTANCES

For vessels in need of some TLC, the Yacht Harbour offers a competitive range of services from the open policy boatyard. As well as lift and storage services, a new on-site engineer carries out engine service and repair, while boat owners are welcome to bring in their own contractors for a small charge. A new wash down area will be installed this autumn, enabling pressure washing to be undertaken in an environmentally sensitive manner. Elsewhere in the marina, vessels can refuel from the fuel jetty, along with a free black water pump-out facility located nearby.

Phase one of the works was due to be finished by April 2020, but work was forced to a standstill by the coronavirus outbreak. Refusing to be downcast, the development resumed as soon as it was safe to do so, and the first phase was completed following the easing of lockdown, allowing mariners who had been kept away by restrictions to return to the water once more. Harbour Master Wendy Stowe and her team have been delighted to welcome back mooring holders over the summer to let them enjoy the new facilities in a secure and friendly environment. Wendy said: “The Beaulieu River is a natural haven and a perfect place to ‘get away from it all’. We have introduced a range of measures to ensure the safety of both our permanent boat owners and visitors, and our team continue to extend a warm welcome while keeping a safe distance.”

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS

The redevelopment is part of a continuing program of improvements at the Yacht Harbour, which saw them awarded the status of TYHA’s Coastal Marina of the Year in 2018/19. Previous projects include a £400k investment in washroom facilities, which were opened by Round the World race winner Mike Golding OBE. Each individual washroom features underfloor heating, heavy oak doors and luxury fittings, alongside a contemporary interior that was designed with a careful eye to the harbour’s natural setting in the New Forest National Park. The Yacht Harbour’s commitment to customer service has also been enhanced by a new electronic harbour management system. The chandlery has been refreshed with a cosy seating area and now features a new range of products alongside their traditional marine supplies, including popular doggy lifejackets and a new line of freshly baked goods, which arrive fresh for the weekends.

The river and its surroundings form part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which offers habitats for some 200 species of birdlife as well as mammals such as seals. The charm of the location is important to the Beaulieu River team, and they are committed to undertaking the redevelopment in a sensitive and sustainable way. As much of the old infrastructure as possible is being refurbished and reused, which helps maintain the unique character of the area, and Beaulieu Enterprises Ltd is collaborating with agencies including Natural England and the Environment Agency to ensure the protection of the river’s unique habitats and species.

The second phase of the redevelopment will begin this autumn, with the final unveiling to take place in the spring of the marina’s golden anniversary year of 2021. The new-look marina will feature an extra 66 berths and additional large moorings, and reservations are already being taken for April 2021. In Portugal white port is popular as an apéritif sharpener, neat, over an ice cube or as a long refreshing drink with tonic and a slice of lemon or orange (really very nice, a bit like a Pimm’s). I was reminded of this by an invitation, out of the blue, from the Co-op to join in a series of members’ exclusive wine tastings at home using Zoom. It seemed too good a lockdown opportunity to miss. The Co-op has been blazing a trail for ethical trading ever since it was founded in the 1840s, and today is the leading UK supermarket for sales of Fairtrade wines. From the outset it paid a ‘divi’ to registered customers. Nowadays shoppers can become Co-op members for £1 and accumulate a dividend on the membership card, which can be used when shopping there.
