The Spice Girls might be back on stage this summer, but it was some of UK sailing’s best-known female names who took centerstage when an all-female line-up of winners was announced at the YJA Yachtsman of the Year and Young Sailor of the Year Awards. At the London ceremony the YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award was presented to joint winners, Tracy Edwards of Maiden fame and Nikki Henderson, who skippered Visit Seattle to second in the Clipper Round the World Race, while YJA Young Sailor of the Year went to 15-year-old Emily Mueller, only the third girl to win the national title. In the same month that we celebrated International Women’s Day this is a fantastic reflection of the strength of women’s sailing today. SEE PAGE 5

WINNING WOMEN FROM PAGE 1... For the first time in more than 60 years the YJA Yachtsman of the Year and the Young Sailor Awards, voted by the Yachting Journalists’ Association members, was a tie with Tracy Edwards and 25-year-old Nikki Henderson announced as joint winners. Clipper 2017-18 race skipper Nikki was awarded the prestigious award after making history when, at 24, she became the youngest ever skipper to compete in the biggest round the world yacht race. The award was also presented to Tracy Edwards MBE, for a second time, for her work with Maiden. Also, for the first time, all the winners of the prestigious awards were female, with the Young Sailor of the Year trophy going to 15-year-old Emily Mueller for her win in the Volvo Gill Optimist British National Championship. Cliff Webb, YJA chairman, said: “The YJA is delighted to recognise Nikki’s achievement in becoming the youngest
skipper ever in the Clipper Race, and to have guided her crew to a second placed finish overall, missing outright victory by the narrowest of margins, is really remarkable. “She showed extraordinary skill, seamanship and race tactics through 11 tough months of competition, where she shouldered the responsibility of keeping her crew safe, while teaching people more than twice her age.” Speaking at the award ceremony in London, Nikki said: “It is all well and good being ambitious and brave as a young person, but it also takes people to have faith in you and give you the breaks. To everyone in my life who has given me those opportunities; thank you, and I hope I have done you proud!” On her second win Tracy said: “To win it again is extraordinary, because amazing women like Nikki and other fantastic female sailors are out there, but I think Maiden did play a part in that, so we have

MARITIME CAREER
Tracy Edwards MBE with a rescued Maiden returned to Hamble in 2017
BREXIT IMPACT NEW figures released from British Marine highlight a 1.7 per cent growth in industry revenue, marking seven years of consecutive progress. The new figures also show that direct revenue from the marine industry trade has contributed more than £1.1bn of Gross Value Added to the UK economy, supporting over 33,000 direct employees in marine businesses across the UK. The UK’s strong export performance continues to drive this industry growth. In 2018 leisure marine exports surpassed £1bn for the first time since 2013, representing an increase of 16 per cent compared to the previous year. This has been attributed to the strong global economic growth during 2018 and a weakened sterling as a consequence of Brexit. The Eurozone and wider EU remains an important market for
the sector, accounting for half of all industry exports. Across the pond, the USA is fast becoming an increasingly important trading partner for British companies, now accounting for a quarter of British exports. The UK domestic market remains flat, with Brexit related uncertainty making consumers nervous and reluctant to splash their cash on leisure items. However, this has also resulted in British citizens holidaying at home.
Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, said: “These latest figures illustrate that the British boating sector has continued to prosper, despite challenging conditions and the ongoing uncertainty about Brexit. A weakened pound has provided much-needed support to industry exports and with British holiday makers staying in the UK, nearly a third of tourism businesses are remaining positive about the future. “However, with the proposed EU exit
deadline looming, the future health of the industry is not guaranteed. Business confidence within the industry relies on consumer confidence and if this uncertainty continues the industry will pay the price. After all, leisure activities are almost always the first thing consumers drop during tougher times.” Lesley Robinson continued: “Leaving the EU could have many consequences for the British marine sector, putting a strain on the supply chain, increasing critical skills shortages and impacting business cash flow because of VAT payment uncertainty. The sector is robust, but a bad Brexit puts our success at risk.” www.britishmarine.co.uk
YOUR THOUGHTS: Brexit continues to dominate the headlines and has already had a mixed impact on the UK boating industry. The Brexit story is far from over though, and so we would love to hear your thoughts on how you feel it will impact – good and bad - on the industry going forward. As always, send your thoughts to editor@allatsea.co.uk or post your comments at the All at Sea Facebook page: www.facebook.com/allatseanewspaper.
More young women will be encouraged to embark on a career at sea thanks to new funding announced by Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani on International Women’s Day in March. Educational charity, the 1851 Trust, has been given £100,000 by the Department for Transport to support the promotion of maritime careers. The money will go towards 10 roadshows around the UK where girls, aged 11 to 14, can speak to women already working in the sector about the careers available before they make their GCSE choices.

come full circle. I think that what Nikki, Wendy (Tuck) and Dee (Caffari), and other girls like Emily here, are doing – it is the future, and it is really important so that means a lot to me.” The YJA award ceremony also celebrated the achievements of Clipper Race co-founder and chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who is celebrating his 80th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his Sunday Times Golden Globe Race achievement. Speaking about Nikki during the last edition of the race, Robin said: “It takes a special kind of person to be a Clipper Race skipper – part teacher, counsellor and sports coach and so to lead her team to second place (and it was a nail-biting finish) is an amazing achievement.” The twelfth edition of the race will begin this summer. www.clipperroundtheworld.com Watch out for a Boating People with Nikki in a future issue of All at Sea!

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde I would like to be able to say what a lovely start to spring it has been, but after the record-breaking temperatures we experienced in February, March has brought us back to reality with a heavy (literally!) dose of rain and cold. While I am sure my garden is loving all the wet weather, I am definitely ready for some sunshine. No doubt the wet March got many of you thinking about an Easter getaway to find some warmth. If you are heading to warmer climes I hope you have a wonderful trip, but if you are waiting for the summer or have not yet decided where to go how about sailing a pilgrimage route? Turn to page 28 to find out more about Sail the Way. Talking of trips, it need not be a week in a hot climate. Why not have a weekend break that ties in with a boating event right here in the UK? Turn to page 44 for the first part of our events guide with regattas, festivals, shows and more taking place from April through to June (next month we will bring you the rest of the summer). One of the big events this spring is the London Yacht Show in May (read more on page 30). Taking place at St Katharine Docks the five day event will bring together many of the world’s finest yacht brands, luxury products and super cars. We feel a long weekend in London calling… Down on the south coast is the popular British Motor Yacht Show, a fantastic opportunity for buyers to see the latest motor yachts. Head over to
Swanwick Marina from 17 - 19 May. Also taking place in May, near Southampton, is the popular Solent Boat Jumble, now the largest UK jumble following the end of the Beaulieu event. Much more than just buying and selling there is lots to keep all the family entertained, so if you have not been before give it a try. You might have noticed that your local boat jumble has stopped and that there are fewer taking place around the country. Interested to find out why, we asked Chris Chaddock, a partner in Chaddock & Fox Promotions the largest organiser of boat jumbles in the UK, for his thoughts on the reasons behind the changing fortunes of boat jumbles. It is an interesting read – take a look for yourself on page 49. Lastly, we must mention Robert Braithwaite who sadly died last month at the age of 75. A pioneer in the boating industry for decades he was not only instrumental in the birth and success of Sunseeker, but was heavily involved in the Southampton and London boat shows over the years and also had a personal charity foundation called The Autumn Trust. Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, summed it up perfectly: “This is a sad day for the industry. Robert Braithwaite was not only pivotal in the success of one of Britain’s marine powerhouses but in shaping the wider UK industry and in particular its boat shows.” Jane Hyde, Editor editor@allatsea.co.uk

The hull has been optimised to take advantage of the latest outboard engine technology giving not only performance benefits but also low-cost maintenance. For even more performance, other outboard engines are available to special order. Whilst the design, features and equipment deliver ultimate day-boat appeal, its performance will ensure it is always first to the best anchorage or beach restaurant. With a choice of paint finishes and upholstery, it will also make the ultimate superyacht chase boat; no two boats are ever likely to be the same. Commenting on the Hawk 38, Sunseeker CEO, ChristianImage: Marti British said: Marine “The heritage of the Sunseeker brand is unparalleled; built on a legacy of developing small performance racing boats, we are the technical experts in this field, and it lies within the brand’s DNA. Having worked previously with FB Design on the XS2000 and XS Sport as far back as 18 years ago, Sunseeker has always dominated this area and will continue to do so with this technologically advanced cutting-edge new model.” www.sunseeker.com

THE plans for the 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada are progressing, with clearer guidelines now set for the future. Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of the Prada Group and Chairman of the Challenger of Record, met with the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, in Auckland and an agreement was reached to resolve a number of pending issues, some of which were already before the Arbitration Panel. Together they have agreed all current outstanding issues including a mutually agreed settlement to the America’s Cup Arbitration case filed on the 12 February 2019 regarding the dispute on the validity of late entries. Under the settlement agreement an amendment to the Protocol allowing the deferred payment of the late entry fee has been agreed and the validity of the three late entry challenges accepted.
The settlement therefore clears the way for the Defender and Challenger of Record to continue to work progressively on planning the 36th America’s Cup as well as all associated events between now and the end of the event in March 2021. Emirates Team New Zealand CEO, Grant Dalton said: “It is no secret there have been some outstanding issues that needed to be resolved, but the fact that Mr. Bertelli took the time to personally come down to Auckland is testament of the mutual respect between us, which bodes well for the event in general. The path is therefore now clear for the late entries to continue building their respective campaigns to try to participate and the Defender and Challenger of Record will give whatever support they can.” Patrizio and Grant also met with the Hon
David Parker and Mayor of Auckland, Phil Goff to discuss the plans for the event and presented Patrizio’s vision for the America’s Cup village which were well received (details of which will be released in due course). www.americascup.com Ahead of the 36th America’s Cup challenger selection series in January 2021, the America’s Cup World Series schedule remains uncertain. At one point there was to be two events in 2019 and three in 2020, but now this year will have none and 2020 will tentatively have an April event in Italy and an October or November event in New Zealand. The full scheduled for 2020 must be announced on or before 30 November, 2019.

HAINES Boatyard, nestled on the foreshore at Itchenor, is well known for its wooden keelboat and GRP dinghy repair and boatyard services. Recently the company has been undertaking some more unusual work in renovating and maintaining wooden and GRP rowing boats. The full range of skills and experience of the in-house shipwrights have been engaged in the renovation of a Solent Galley. Bembridge arrived at Itchenor Sailing Club in late 2016 from Langstone Cutters Rowing Club where she had participated in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012 and a number of Great River Races. Originally built for racing in Portsmouth Harbour and its environs, the Solent Galley is a 30ft clinkerbuilt, fixed seat rowing boat with four oars and a cox. These craft are light, slim and fast and have some notable achievements to their names including holding the record for the circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight. Southsea resident, the late Pat Sherwin was passionate in his wish to preserve the few remaining examples of these boats and established the Pat Sherwin Rowing Trust, which owns and operates a
number of galleys, some of which are lent to local organisations to encourage recreational rowing. The growth in recreational, as opposed to racing, rowing has been considerable and this was recognised when Pat was awarded an MBE for his efforts in ‘encouraging recreational rowing’. Iccanore, a new GRP Celtic long boat arrived at Itchenor in June 2018 to substitute for Bembridge while she went through a major refurbishment. The Celtic Longboat was chosen as its rowing characteristics are very close to those of a Solent Galley and allowed the popular Chichester Harbour outings to continue. With a steady growth in the popularity of rowing and frequent outings from Itchenor Sailing Club, both craft require regular maintenance, upkeep and repairs. The shipwrights at Haines Boatyard have been advising and assisting the volunteer rowers in the skills of wood preparation, steam bent timbers, varnishing and GRP repairs to keep both craft in tiptop condition. Such is the popularity of rowing that there is talk of a new generation of Solent Galleys being built in wood. www.hainesboatyard.com
NEW SEASON SETS SAIL ITCHENOR Sailing Club in Chichester looks set to enjoy yet another busy season, which includes the introduction of a new class for beginners and the launch of an experimental pay-as-you-sail initiative for non-members as well as playing host to an exciting European Championship. New Sailing Manager Ryan Breach is at the helm of this year’s sailing programme which includes the Itchenor Sailing Club Regatta on 8 June. Itchenor is also hosting this year’s Sharpie European Championships from 18 – 23 August. An exciting event with fierce competition, entries will be descending on Chichester Harbour from Germany, The Netherlands and Portugal as well as across the UK. Sailing Manager, Ryan Breach, said: “It looks set to be an exciting year, I am particularly looking forward to seeing Schools Week and Junior Fortnight in action. The highlight of the season will have to be the Sharpie Europeans; it will be an amazing spectacle with a week of competitive racing.”
To help encourage fresh talent to the club, Itchenor’s Merlin Rocket Class has introduced a new pay-as-you-sail scheme allowing non-members to book for a weekend of sailing and experience the best that Itchenor has to offer. The club is also welcoming those new to sailing with its Optimist single-handed dinghy class and accompanying training that can take children and absolute beginners of all ages all the way up to RYA stage 2. The Optimists will also be used when reaching out to local schools to offer pupils the chance to experience the rewards of being out on the water. Itchenor Sailing Club has put together a season with something for everyone, from the most experienced sailor to the absolute beginner. www.itchenorsc.co.uk Find out more about Ryan Breach in this month’s Boating People on page 34.

WHEELYBOAT ON BBC ONE’S COUNTRYFILE BBC One’s Countryfile featured the Coulam Wheelyboat V20 on a trial run at North Wales Sailability on Anglesey. Presenter, Steve Brown, had great fun helming the V20, his first time at the wheel of a powerboat. The programme showed how a Wheelyboat would enhance the activities of the Sailability group, broaden members’ experiences on the water and make it so much easier and speedier to board and disembark via the bow door. If you missed the show catch the programme on BBC iPlayer. In further news, The Wheelyboat Trust and Angling Trust have partnered together to part-fund seven new Coulam 16 Wheelyboats that will enable clubs and fisheries across the UK to provide
disabled anglers, and wheelchair users in particular, with access to their waters and the fishing. The Wheelyboat Trust has raised £35,000 in grants from the Peter Harrison Foundation (£30,000) and Lord Barnby’s Foundation (£5,000) to support this initiative. Thanks to them the seven Coulam Wheelyboats will each be discounted by £5,000 bringing the cost of each boat down to the same price as the standard, nonaccessible, version of the Coulam 16. The application process is now open at grants.anglingtrust. net. The closing date for applications is 30 April. www.wheelyboats.org

A Sussex disability charity is looking for volunteers who can sail, so that they can support its members as they take to the water. Sussex Sailability needs to recruit up to 12 volunteers who can help disabled sailors to learn and enjoy the sport in a safe and controlled environment, on the charity’s specially adapted boats. Kevin Headon of Sussex Sailability said: “There is nothing like feeling the freedom of the water, it is a lifechanging experience for our sailors – some of whom have had very little experience of sailing when they join us. At the moment we cannot provide enough sessions for all our sailors, because we just do not have enough volunteers. So, if you can sail and have a little spare time then we would really welcome your help. “Volunteering is incredibly rewarding, especially when you see the positive difference that you are making to someone’s life. We provide all the training that is needed and free or highly subsidised nationally recognised RYA qualifications. All we ask is that you commit to at least one day each month supporting us over the summer.” Chris Hodge is the chairman of Sussex Sailability and has been sailing since he was paralysed in a sporting accident 16 years ago. He said: “I love that sailing has given me the opportunities for adventure and competition that I enjoyed before my accident. Sussex Sailability’s fleet of boats, which are adapted for use by disabled people, allow me to get out on the water and take part in races alongside ablebodied people.” Sussex Sailability is based at Shoreham’s Sussex Yacht Club, which is soon to begin work on building a new clubhouse and facilities that have been specifically designed to be easily accessible to sailors with disabilities. THIRD FOR UKU POOLE Harbour Commissioners has chosen Ocean Youth Trust South as their charity partner of the year for the 2019 Poole Harbour Boat Show. The fifth annual Poole Harbour Boat Show, in association with Sunseeker International, runs from 7 – 9 June. With over 32,000 people in attendance in 2018 the show continues to be the biggest-ever, free boat show on the south coast. As part of the partnership they are offering 12 local young people the opportunity to participate in a free five-night voyage on the sail training vessel Prolific from 21 -26 August. The organisers are encouraging the local community to get involved and get nominating young people in Dorset aged 12 – 18 years. Poole Harbour Boat Show marketing director Tracy Payne said: “This will provide an amazing and potentially life changing opportunity for a young person in Dorset. We want you to tell us the reason why they should be chosen for this incredible experience.” Ocean Youth Trust South provides residential voyages called Adventure Under Sail as a personal development opportunity for young people, aged 12 – 25. The voyages on board its 32m sail training vessel Prolific are used to work with around 450 young people each year. They sail as active crew members, responsible for sail handling, steering, watch-keeping, helping with navigation and voyage planning, cooking, cleaning and more. The aim is to develop skills and qualities that will be of lasting value to those young people, as well as their schools, employers, families and communities. “Poole Harbour Commissioner’s marina manager Kerrie Gray benefitted from a similar opportunity during her school days and it had a massive impact on her. She sailed on John Laing, an Ocean Youth
Trust ship and went on to volunteer for the Tall Ships Youth Trust. Kerrie was subsequently inspired to join the Royal Navy and eventually joined the team at Poole Harbour Commissioners. Rockley Watersports is also a partner of the show and will be providing ‘on the water’ taster sessions including kayaks, paddle boards and dinghies. Rockley Watersports managing director Pip Woods said: “We are very keen that as many individuals – children and adults - have the opportunity to experience water activities, develop new skills, challenge themselves and potentially develop a passion for a new sport – always under the supervision of our fully qualified RYA Instructors. Whilst being a great day out for families, the show also perfectly showcases all that Rockley can offer to youngsters and adults.” Visit www.pooleharbourboatshow.co.uk/ getonthewater and fill in the online form to nominate for the OYTS voyage. JustGiving fundraising page for OYT South: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/pooleboatshow www.pooleharbourboatshow.co.uk www.oytsouth.org/charity.asp Ocean Youth Trust South is also offering six young people from the Isle of Wight the opportunity to participate in a four night voyage on board the sail training vessel Prolific between 18 and 22 October. This voyage would normally cost £375 per person but due to the generosity of OYT South’s Island Support Group, places are available for free for selected candidates. The voyage will start and finish from Ocean Village, Southampton.
UKU Randmaa crossed the Les Sables d’Olonne finish line to secure third place in the Golden Globe Race. Thousands lined the river entrance to catch a glimpse of the 56-year-old Estonian solo circumnavigator and his boat. Waiting for him at the dock was his wife Maibi and young twins Thor and Orm, who were born shortly before his departure, together with the family of fellow circumnavigators who had kept each other going through good times and bad over the radio. Winner, Jean-Luc Van Den Heede was one of the first to shake his hand followed by Dutchman Mark Slats, and two who were rescued in midocean, Loïc Lepage and Susie Goodall. After almost 252 days at sea, all Uku had left in his larder was three packets of powdered soup, and he grabbed the pizza offered to him with both hands. Talking about his diet he said: “I think I must have lost at least 20kg. By Hobart, I knew I was going to run short of food so I divided up what I had left by two…and then I divided it by two more. I had
Haslar Marina Gosport
two meals a day; a freeze dried dish and a cup of soup, but it has been very good for my health. If I did physical work, I got tired early, but it was not a major problem. “The hardest part of the voyage was lack of wind. I was stuck in the St Helena high pressure system for more than a week. My biggest worry was keeping the boat in one piece. I was worried that if something broke I might not be able to finish the race.” Another reflection on the voyage was the amount of rubbish in the oceans. “The biggest pollution – mainly plastic – was after rounding the Cape of Good Hope. There were streams of it in the ocean. At one time I came across a door and on another occasion, a complete tree. If I had hit that, I think my steering would have broken.” Uku was followed by fourth placed American/ Hungarian Istvan Kopar who arrived at the finish on 21 March leaving just Tapio Lehtinen at sea with more than 4,000nm still to sail and a mid-May return date. www.goldengloberace.com

with 300 D-Day veterans on board for their trip to Normandy. The ship, specially chartered by the Royal British Legion, will be escorted by a Royal Navy vessel to represent the famous crossings that took place 75 years ago. The commemorative events continue on 6 June with a Remembrance Service held at the D-Day Stone in Southsea opposite South Parade Pier. RED DIESEL DUTY IN BELGIUM THE Cruising Association Regulations and Technical Services Group understands that Belgian authorities will continue with the agreement for UK pleasure vessels visiting Belgium that they still have to use our red diesel in the engine fuel tanks for propulsion, certainly for this year. The conditions are the same as before, in that all diesel purchased prior to departure from the UK to Belgium, or other EU maritime states’ marinas and ports, must pay the full 100 per cent duty (and not any lower duty rate) on all the fuel and that it is recorded on the signed invoice for the purchase. This invoice must be on board the vessel (such as with the boat’s log) in the unlikely event any
inspecting customs official should wish to see it as proof of the duty payment. The agreement was successfully used last year and, should there be any change to it by the Belgian authorities, they have promised the Regulations and Technical Services Group a guarantee that they will be informed in good time so that the Cruising Association can share the details with CA members and the wider sailing community. For peace of mind, and if owners have any concerns about making a trip, they can ring the staff of the first marina they are calling at to confirm they will have no problem with their visit. www.theca.org.uk/join
STEAMING AHEAD SOUTHAMPTON’S heritage steamship, Steamship Shieldhall, has always been well-known for its ‘access all areas’ approach. Now the ship’s volunteers are offering the opportunity to get even more involved, by offering Steam Experience Days. Shieldhall’s Chief Engineers Graham Mackenzie and Graham Martin are looking forward to welcoming participants, and they promise an entertaining and educative time on board: “We will cover safety practices aboard Shieldhall; the production and utilisation of steam through Shieldhall’s boilers and engines, together with preparation of all auxillaries with the raising of steam. “There will be time spent at sea with opportunities to operate all engine and
boilers under supervision, and a spell at the wheel on the bridge. Membership of the Solent Steam Packet – the charity that operates Shieldhall – is also included for one year.” Steamship Shieldhall is listed on the National Historic Ships register and was constructed in 1955 for the Glasgow Corporation. A one day Silver ticket (£299) and two day Golden ticket (£499) are available on selected dates during the 2019 sailing season, with numbers capped at four per course so that the hands-on nature of the experience can be maximised. Carolyn said: “There really is no limit to the food you can have even if you do not have refrigeration or have the typical too-small boat refrigerator. Meats, eggs, cheese, milk, butter, fruits and veggies are all not just possible, but some actually last better outside the refrigerator.” This second edition is over 60 per cent longer and gives more in-depth information needed to create your favourite meals. £9.84 www.amazon.co.uk

CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE WINNER REVEALED THE 2019 Concours d’Elegance at the RYA Dinghy Show was awarded to Pete Jary’s foiling A Class Catamaran. The boat combined stunning looks, high-tech features, great graphics and no small measure of humour. The runner-up was Ben Archer’s Merlin Rocket ‘One Love’. Sarah Treseder, Chief Executive of the RYA, said: “There has been a great buzz at the show, and a sense of humour that has been brought into some of the designs
on show, tiny details which have made us smile, decorations, little notices to the crew, but overall that sense that sailing is fun, and let us bring that to life.” The combination of new paint and vinyl wraps brought an extra dimension to many boats, with sailors really utilising the technology to good effect. ORGAN DONATION AWARENESS LAST month we told you about the World Kidney Day Sail, and Jacquie Dowding, an experienced professional sailor and kidney recipient herself (twice), has been back in touch to say it was a huge: “It was an incredibly successful day, as we had myself and two other transplant crew, plus one newly transplanted, who was originally a dialysis crew but had ‘the call’ two weeks ago for the ‘gift of life’. iLOVESAILING CALENDAR THE ilovesailing calendar competition is now in its 7th year and has proved extremely popular with thousands of amateur and professional photographers sharing their favourite sailing photos in the hope of claiming a spot on the calendar. Each month two entrants will be chosen for the calendar. As well as claiming their spot each winner will win two tickets to the Southampton Boat Show for the official prize giving, a canvas print of their winning entry, a copy of the final calendar, RYA goodies and an ilovesailing rubber duck. “Our gorgeous ilovesailing duck is always a huge hit with the ilovesailing fans trying to bag the new colour duck for their collections. I think this year’s bright yellow duck is particularly fetching and will prove to be very popular,” said Emma Slater, ilovesailing co-ordinator.
“There is no real theme for this year’s competition, however to go nicely with our bright yellow duck it would be great to see plenty of colour in this year’s entries,” Emma told us. The 2020 calendars will go on sale at the Southampton Boat Show in September, where the first 50 people to purchase a copy will also receive one of the popular 2019 yellow ilovesailing rubber ducks for free. Alternatively the calendars will be available to purchase via the RYA web shop, www.rya.org.uk/shop, from 13 September. All you have to do to take part is post your favourite sailing photo(s) on to the ilovesailing Facebook page www.facebook.com/ryailovesailing or email your entry to emma.slater@rya.org.uk. YOUR OWN SLICE OF MOODY? HERE is a rather interesting project that surfaced for sale in southern France; a 37’ motor yacht built by AH Moody in 1959. The boat was designed by Fred Parker as a seagoing gentleman’s launch, although for the last 14 years it has been used as a liveaboard on the canal systems of southern France. Built predominantly of Lagos Mahogany plank on oak with teak decking, the vessel represents the last of an era, in both craftmanship and materials. Designed and built for Sir Guy Ropner (then Chairman of Lloyds Register, London) and exhibited by AH Moody’s at the London Boat Show in 1960, it has provenance in abundance. Powered by two Perkins S6M engines, and fitted out to accommodate up to five, this yacht represents a glorious piece of British boat building heritage, in a relatively
pocket size package. The boat is UK registered and is generally solid and watertight, but the décor is tired and requires a thorough freshen. The teak deck also needs recaulking and the original fixtures and fittings are with the boat or stored. The wiring and plumbing have been modified or added to, and need a complete overhaul, as do the soft furnishings and galley. Off the boat is a store of original fittings in good serviceable condition including a gimbal stove, cabin lights, Francis search light, mahogany doors, engine spares and mast. The yacht needs a new custodian; someone with the means, knowledge and enthusiasm to cherish this rare piece of British maritime heritage. Contact Robert Cooper (07599 717185) for more information.

OCEAN RACE GLOBAL LAUNCH THE Ocean Race revealed its new brand identity and confirmed two team entries during an online launch event in Alicante, Spain. Formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race (1973 to 1997) and the Volvo Ocean Race (2001 to 2018), The Ocean Race is now under new ownership, but retains Volvo as a premier race partner. “This is a big moment for The Ocean Race,” said Managing Director Johan Salén. “We are excited to be moving forward with a new identity that reflects the best of our heritage – human ambition, technology, competition and teamwork – while adding in new elements, like our core focus on sustainability.” The next edition of The Ocean Race will start in 2021 from Alicante, Spain,
with two classes of boats racing: the high-tech, foiling IMOCA 60s and the one-design VO65 fleet that provided the closest race in the history of the event in the last edition. Paulo Mirpuri, the chairman of the Mirpuri Foundation, who was a founding partner of Turn the Tide on Plastic in the last race, announced he would have at least one team competing in The Ocean Race. Bianca Cook, who raced on board Turn the Tide on Plastic in the 2017-18 event, announced she would be spearheading a New Zealand flagged team. Tony Rae (Trae), a veteran of six editions of the race, twice as a winner, as well as seven America’s Cup teams, is on board to manage the campaign. www.theoceanrace.com www.marine16.co.uk

YOUR LETTERS OLD GAFFERS Dear All at Sea I hope you can help me with the following - I cannot find anything about the Old Gaffers this year. I have heard the Yarmouth festival itself is not on this year, but does that mean the boats will not be coming over? I also cannot find any listings for sailing regattas this year; do you have a specific website you use? Many thanks for your help in advance. Natalie Dear Natalie Thank you for your letter and interest in the Old Gaffers. The website for the Association for Gaff Rig Sailing, which was formed in 1963 to promote the use of the Gaff rig (a sailing rig in which the sail is four-cornered, fore-and-aft rigged, controlled at its peak and, usually, its entire head by a spar (pole) called the gaff), can be found at www.oga.org.uk. This year’s Yarmouth Gaffers Regatta takes place on the Isle of Wight from 30 May to 2 June and is the biggest annual gathering of gaff-rigged boats in the UK with up to 100 boats attending. It is open to gaff, sprit and lug rigged boats, whether or not skippers are members of the OGA. Find out more about the regatta at www.oga.org.uk/solent/ events/yarmouth-gaffers-regatta-2019. As for sailing regattas in general, the best place to find a comprehensive list is All at Sea’s online events guide (allatsea.co.uk/boatingevents), and over on page 44 we have the first of a two-part summer events guide featuring everything from shows and regattas to races and boat jumbles. TAKE TO THE WATER
Dear All at Sea I must endorse the All at Sea headline ‘Take to the Water’ on the January issue. I am now 96 and have lived here at Haslar Marina for the past 18 years on board Old Possum, a Nauticat 33. I take no medication, joints are ok and although I now have the cleaning and antifouling applied by the local Sealift, I am still fairly active otherwise. Sea air (fresh air) is a very good medicine. I have enclosed a cutting from NCI Gosport featuring my profile. Maurice Owens

POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTH’S ENGINE NEWS.
JOYSTICK CONTROL
Electronics are taking over, how long before Artificial Intelligence works its way into boating lives? It is already partly here if you include the automatic position maintenance technology and joystick engine and steering controls that are available. Mercury has had joystick control available on their top end models - those above 250hp - for five years now. In a collaborative effort with SeaStar the option has been made available for the new, smaller horsepower V6 engines too, the 200hp and 225hp. The fly-by-wire Digital Throttle and Shift control makes it all possible, coupling to the SeaStar Optimus system of Joystick, Cantrack display, hydraulic steering, Smart Cylinder and Sport Tilt Helm. The system enables fingertip control for berthing or holding position and heading. The actual joystick control is compact to fit neatly on to any sportsboat helm. Talking joysticks, Evinrude can also offer a system, called iDock. It is a simpler system that does not
TROUBLE FREE START…
Still staying on the component side of things, starter motors are a notorious source of trouble, especially on inboard mounted engines where bilge water can be thrown on to the starter and, as everyone knows, saltwater and electricity do not make good bedfellows! To try and combat this perennial problem Sierra Marine has addressed the water sealing of their replacement starters by re-engineering the most popular starter motors with an uprated connection between the solenoid and commutator brushes, better planetry seal, a
require any extra external pumps because it utilises the existing steering system built into the engines. This makes it much easier to install, cheaper to supply and takes up far less room in the boat. It is priced at £5,999 on the price of the engines and is available from the 150hp engine upwards. The iDock system is available from Powertech Marine with immediate availability.
more robust clutch gear spring and strategically located water seals to reduce the opportunity of water ingress. Should moisture find a way in, then the oneway moisture valve and relief cuts provide an exit for the water, hopefully before corrosion can begin its dastardly work. It is worth checking the starter motor on your sterndrive or inboard engine before the season begins, so you are prepared for a trouble free start to your boating summer (trouble free start, did you see what I did there)... oh, never mind. On that note we wish you bon voyage until next month!
YANMAR’S DIESEL INVESTMENT Diesel is dead! Oh yes, try telling that to Yanmar who are investing heavily in furthering the advancement of diesel engines, because the power produced for the calorific value of the fuel is more efficient than anything else and they can be produced to run clean. The new 4LV series of engines that we brought to you in this column last year can now be mated to the ZT370 sterndrive leg, offering the benefit of dual, contra-rotating propellers. The hydraulic, multiplate clutch, very similar to that used in my motorcycle,
of the ZT370 provides fluid gear changes and has been built to absorb the punishment meted out in the form of massive torque from the 370hp 8LV engine, so can easily take the output from the lighter, less powerful range covering 150hp – 250hp and with a choice of gear ratios to suit a wide variety of applications. The ZT370 sterndrive benefits from a new anticorrosion coating; the XTO hard anodised surface gives it a pleasing aesthetic appearance and higher corrosion resistance for greater longevity.

The 505 class were right at the forefront of the carbon fibre revolution, using a web of fibres to stiffen up the hull Image: Oliver Barat/505 France
THE STUFF OF STARS
The last America’s Cup boats and other high speed craft like HUGO BOSS owe much to the use of carbon fibre, but how did this material come to have such an influence in today’s boating? Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating. The completed wave screen at Haslar
L
ast summer this column carried the feature ‘A Heart of Glass’ on the development of GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) and how this new wonder material of the 1950s had changed the very nature of small boats and boatbuilding. The ability to produce complex mouldings that enjoyed a great degree of conformality did not just accelerate the move towards one-design sailing, but it also signalled the end of the cottage industry of highly skilled craftsmen. However, that move away from the loving construction of the individual boat into the industrial process would only be a step along the way to an even more amazing, high-tech material that is now truly ‘the stuff of stars’. VICTORIAN EXPERIMENTS The idea of producing a thread of carbon actually dates back to the middle of the Victorian era when experiments were taking place to bake cotton thread at high temperature to create a filament for an early light bulb. The resulting threads had a low carbon content and high levels of impurities that rendered them useless for practical applications and even 100 years later, it was still only possible to produce a carbon based product that contained 50 per cent of the desired material. It would not be until 1960 that an American researcher found that by using rayon as the original material, that a 99 per cent carbon thread could be produced. The trick was to get the carbon to form crystals that aligned in parallel to the length of the fibre. The
extra step to maximise the structural properties. Once the moulding had been completed, with the carbon fibres laid up into a ‘composite’ with an epoxy resin, the item would need baking at high temperate for a number of hours. The end result, though, was a truly amazing material that was light, incredibly strong and was not only well able to resist temperature but did not expand or contract when used under extreme conditions.
By now the first generation forms of carbon fibre were being rapidly overtaken by new developments based on an oil based compound, with carbon fibre being increasingly specialised as ‘high modulus’ materials were released on to the market. After some spectacular (not to mention expensive) failures, the mast making industry was able to achieve the nirvana of spars that were lighter, stiff and of smaller cross section to the point that today, in the
performance market at least, it is rare to find a mast still made from aluminium. This success has come at a cost, as there is still a considerable premium in the cost of a carbon mast when compared to that of a metal one. By now boatbuilders had also solved the practical issues of building hulls in carbon fibre and it would soon be a badge of prestige that everything from a high-performance skiff to a superyacht had spent time inside a huge oven that was more like a cathedral in size. STRONGER CONSTRUCTION There was, though, one unexpected consequence of the development of carbon fibre that would arise in more ways than one. As has been said, construction in carbon offers a stronger, lighter hull and it was this combination that allowed the International Moth to spread its wings and fly on foils, closely followed by everything from long distance offshore racers to the super-cats that contested the last America’s Cup. When they were going flat out, at speeds approaching 50kts, the whole weight of boat, rig and crew were being supported on a foil tip that was no bigger than a tea-towel folded in half. It is inconceivable that this would be possible without the extensive use of carbon fibre that was in everything, from the steering wheel down to the foil tips, then up through all the fittings, to the tip of the incredible wing masts. Those America’s Cup boats and those that will follow may well be the boats of the stars, but ultimately their success is all down to their construction being in the ‘stuff of stars’.
Carbon fibre construction is now a highly specialised subject, with a huge variety of cloth weights and weaves, with each having a specific task. The task facing designers and boatbuilders is knowing which cloth to use and where! Image: David Henshall
“It would soon be a badge of prestige that everything from a high-performance skiff to a superyacht had spent time inside a huge oven that was more like a cathedral in size.” resulting thread was incredibly slender, being many times finer than a human hair. Once these threads of carbon had been bundled or woven together, they could be embedded into a resin to produce a material that was both light and incredibly strong. The moves to take this ‘carbon fibre’ on to the next step would be made at Farnborough, when researchers at the Royal Aircraft Establishment perfected the process of creating a cost effective and practical product that would soon start appearing as the latest ‘space age’ product. UNLIMITED BUDGETS Soon carbon fibre would find a wealth of opportunities in the aerospace industries, which was apt giving that the early production of the material resulted in some pretty astronomical costs. The other place where opportunity co-existed happily with almost unlimited budgets was in motorsport and in particular, F1. The production of body panels highlighted some of the construction issues, for unlike when working in GRP, the carbon fibre process required an
BOAT BUILDING By the late 1960s, the possibilities of using carbon fibre in boatbuilding and other marine applications was being discussed, but was still seen as something that might happen one day away in the future. The boatbuilding industry was still coming to terms with the migration from wood to GRP; being able to work with carbon fibre and epoxy resins would make boatyards even more like laboratories. However, the lure of increased hull stiffness, whilst saving weight was too strong to ignore, and in 1968 the English firm of Courtaulds supported the Boston based boatbuilders Parker Brothers to produce the world’s first carbon fibre reinforced hull for a 5o5 dinghy. Some 3lb/1.3kg of carbon fibre, in the form of an open mesh, were bonded into the hull late on in the build process. From this small beginning developments would soon be taking place with carbon reinforced metal masts, then all carbon spars. The hope was that as more and more applications started to use carbon fibre, that the cost per kilo would drop to allow its wide-scale use.
It would be a mistake to think that carbon fibre does not have its own problems, for there is little ‘give’ in the material. Rather than bending, as an aluminium mast would do, carbon spars simply self destruct in spectacular fashion. Image: John Murrell/MROA

PASSING OF A TRUE PIONEER Sunseeker’s inspirational co-founder Robert Braithwaite, who dreamt of building a new kind of boat when he was young, sadly passed away in March aged 75.
The following year saw the company exhibit at the Southampton Boat Show. It was there that Formula One driver Henry Taylor asked for a boat with a full width sunbed, which Robert and his team agreed to design. Using revolutionary materials and technology, his early designs were tailored to a handful of customers, keen to embrace new found freedoms.
GROWING MARKET
Robert Braithwaite, 1943 - 2019
B
orn in Yorkshire, Robert left school at 15 and went on to transform Sunseeker from a local boat distributor into a globally recognised brand and one of the largest superyacht builders in the world. Robert was there every step of the way as the company grew to become the iconic brand it is today and was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2007 for services to business and charity in Poole, 15 years after being awarded an MBE for Sunseeker’s export efforts. Robert spent his entire career in the marine industry starting out servicing outboards and, during the 1960s, he worked at Friar’s Cliff Marine – which became Poole Powerboats in 1969 when the company moved to Poole. One of the ranges they sold was Owens Cruisers, a name that went on to have a significant impact on Robert’s future. When Owen Cruisers decide to stop European distribution Robert negotiated with them to acquire the boat moulds. There was just one problem for Poole Powerboats - the company had never built any kind of seagoing craft. However, 1971 saw the first yacht launched, the Sovereign 17, followed by the Sovereign 20.
With the growth in the sports cruiser market more boats followed, the Sports 23 and Daycab 23, and by the late 1970s the boats were not only popular in Britain but northern Europe too. However, Robert, along with his brother John who had joined the business, wanted to get into the Mediterranean market. Superyacht designer Don Shead came on board and, following a leap of courage and imagination, the resulting Offshore 28 went on to sell further afield in Europe and Sunseeker International was launched. The company continued to grow its global distributor network and expand its shipyards in Poole. A true visionary of the luxury marine sector, Robert’s entrepreneurial strength drove the sales and marketing success globally, embracing a very public facing role. Looking at things differently was always a Sunseeker obsession. By the mid-eighties, it was an unrelenting passion. In the Portofino 31, the focus shifted from overnight accommodation to cockpits that could host large groups of people, yielding a wide and comfortable two-cabin boat. By the nineties style had become an even bigger factor and Sunseeker began to observe the softer shapes employed within automotive design. This, combined with an awakened desire amongst owners for larger boats, led to the Renegade 60, their first production boat with twin jet drives. The turn of the century saw Sunseeker set the pace with the launch of their thenlargest ever motoryacht, the 105 Yacht.
Together the brothers were the inspiration and the vision behind the pioneering nature of the business that has seen the brand produce a remarkable number of industry ‘firsts’, revolutionising the industry as a whole. In 2012 Robert decided to step down from executive and board responsibility, taking on the role of group president. The following year a 91.8 per cent stake in Sunseeker was sold to Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group for £320m.
BOAT SHOW CHAMPION
In addition to the creation of the successful global Sunseeker brand, Robert was a boat show champion. As one of the longest serving chairmen of National Boat Shows (now dissolved within British Marine), he spearheaded the Association’s two leading boat shows, London Boat Show and Southampton Boat Show, for three terms between the ‘90s and early ‘00s*. Most notably, he was instrumental in the move of the London Boat Show to ExCeL London in 2004 but by many, visitors and fellow exhibitors alike, he will be more personally remembered as a much loved friend and recognised face around the shows. Talking about Robert’s death Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, said: “This is a sad day for the industry. Robert Braithwaite was not only pivotal in the success of one of Britain’s marine powerhouses but in shaping the wider UK industry and in particular its boat shows. “Robert was a true industry icon and great personal friend to many. He will be sincerely missed by all those who worked with him here at British Marine during his years as chairman, exhibitor and member, as well as in the wider industry by those who either knew him personally or who simply recognised his huge contribution and achievements within the sector. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time.”
HIGHLY RESPECTED
There were many awards, both personal and as part of Sunseeker, over the years. Robert was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Metstrade / IBI Boat Builder Awards in 2016 and just last November the pioneering Braithwaite brothers were awarded the coveted Outstanding Achievement award at
the 2018 Luxury Briefing Awards. Commenting on the award, Sunseeker Sales Director, Sean Robertson said: “This is a phenomenal award and one that both Robert and John richly deserve. They have contributed so much to the marine industry and what they have achieved is truly remarkable. Words alone frankly cannot describe their influence yet they are always the first to credit our employees and wider ‘family’. “Sunseeker would not be the global brand it is today if it was not for their never-ending passion and vision. This is core to the company’s DNA today, reflected in the global success of the brand, the incredible product range and our unwavering customer loyalty.” Robert’s work even led to a film role; after Sunseeker appeared in four consecutive James Bond films, he was asked to appear in a cameo role in the film Quantum of Solace. The scene features Robert and James Bond in a Sovereign 17, one of the company’s first open cockpit speedboats. Away from the water, Robert’s personal charity foundation The Autumn Trust was set up for the advancement of health and saving lives, helping people with disabilities and their children. In 2015, after being treated for bowel cancer at Poole Hospital, he also donated a £3.5m robot for advanced keyhole surgery for cancer patients. Announcing his death Christian Marti, Sunseeker CEO, said: “Robert was an inspiration to everyone at Sunseeker and to the wider marine industry, recognised as a boating pioneer, a true visionary and someone who changed the face of boating forever. “Robert was not only the company’s founder but the father of the ‘Sunseeker family’ here in Dorset, and worldwide through our dealers and clients. He will always live on as the driving force behind our success. Having fought prostate cancer and bowel cancer successfully, Alzheimer’s was the battle he lost, having bravely tackled this dreadful disease the past few years.” www.sunseeker.com Today Sunseeker International employs a team of over 2,500 highly skilled designers, engineers and master craftsmen supported by a worldwide network of more than 120 retail and service locations, exporting around 150 yachts a year to more than 74 countries. *Robert Braithwaite CBE, DL served as Chairman of National Boat Shows in 1991-92, 1997-98 and 2003-04.

The Photo of the Month winner will receive a bottle of Spytail Ginger Rum! Every month the Photo of the Month winner will receive a bottle of Spytail Ginger Rum, based on a 19th Century French recipe of infusing fresh ginger and spices in Cognac barrels. Spytail Ginger Rum is available across the UK in an eye-catching bottle, celebrating the intrigue and mystery of French underwater exploration. Spytail is a blend of aged Caribbean rums, blended and bottled at a small distillery by La Compagnie Bathysphere in the Cognac Region of France – an area famous for spirits craftsmanship. The name ‘Spytail’ was discovered by the distillers stamped on an early engineering drawing for a submarine in the local maritime archive. They also discovered that, while submarines sailed along the bottom of the Charente River, ships laden with rum and ginger followed the same route from the Caribbean. Serving suggestion: On the Rocks, with ginger beer, cola or ginger and in a wide variety of cocktails. www.spytailrum.com Send in your photos now! THE CAMINO TALES A pilgrimage to visit the shrine of the apostle St James is becoming more and more popular - walking the Camino de Santiago - but did you know that you can sail a pilgrimage route too?
Fabienne said of their Costantini 30. “But when there was wind, we were the first over the line ready for the activities after sailing – such as food and tours and demonstrations – it is a fantastic way of discovering the Spanish coast.”
EMOTIONAL TRIP
The fleet on pontoons in Cedeira (Galicia)
I
t is perhaps quite fitting that you can sail a pilgrimage most of the way to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, as that is the same way St James’ martyred body would have been transported. There is some historical discussion about the whereabouts of his remains – whether his remains actually made it to shore – however what is agreed upon is that a pilgrimage to the shrine of the apostle is becoming more and more popular. While you can do the route yourself using a Pilgrim’s Passport (enabling the holder to receive La Compostela – the official certificate of achievement) and staying at marinas, such as those in MDL’s extended network, Sail the Way is looking to depart from La Rochelle on 5 July. However you can, if you prefer, choose your departure port, from La Rochelle to Santiago de Compostela, giving a maximum of 16 stages, over 22 days of sailing. In this flotilla-based pilgrimage there is one day of walking involved in keeping with the spirit of the way the last 10km to get to the cathedral needs to be done on foot.
CHALLENGE OPEN TO ALL
As Fabienne St Pierre, a participant in 2018, explains, the pilgrimage is undertaken by all sorts of people. “Some people were very religious, some were spirituals and others liked the adventure but were not religious at all. When you meet people who are doing it, their reasons are all totally different. But they all enjoyed the challenge of sailing and, for some of them, it was a real challenge.” The cruising in company route is fairly straightforward from stunning marina to marina, and according to Fabienne’s husband Philippe Costantini, who has been sailing since ‘before he was born’, and whose great, great, grandfather taught Italian royalty to sail, it is not overly challenging as long as you have the right level of experience. “It is not for a skipper who has no experience. And, it all depends where you start. The Bay of Biscay has a bad reputation and if you need to cross it, it might be more challenging than just sailing along the Spanish coast. Even that coast, with the swell from the Atlantic, the cliffs and the drafts coming down the mountains can create a choppy sea. “Also, 80 miles in a day can be quite a long trip, and because sailing boats do not sail at the same speed, you might end up alone and need to get into a new harbour on your own at the end. We were the last ones into the marinas if there was no wind, because we have a small engine,”
Fabienne and her family had a deeply personal reason for taking part. “My sister died in April 2018, of a brain tumour,” Fabienne explained. “Claudette had an incredible soul full of adventure; we were going to trek in Nepal. But first we planned to walk the Camino de Santiago. We heard you would meet lovely people, and we both loved walking. Unfortunately, she passed away. My husband saw an advert for Sail the Way and asked me if I would like to do the Camino by sea. I decided to bring her ashes with me, and spread them along the way. “At the end of the sailing, you have to walk the last 10km. I took her ashes with me, looking for somewhere on the way to the Cathedral. Claudette grew flowers for a living, and I saw some roses and put some of her ashes there, but not all of them because it was not right. “Early one morning, in the Bay of Biscay, during my watch on the way back, I saw a kind of little tornado. Then I saw another one and another one for a radius of a mile-and-a-half. It was not tornadoes; there were about 20 whales. And I said to Claudette: “There you go, this is what you deserve”. I woke my husband and the children. We scattered Claudette’s ashes among the whales. It was fantastic.”
Fabienne and her family had a very personal reason for taking part
FAMILY AFFAIR
Very much a family affair, Fabienne and Philippe’s children (aged 12 and 14) crewed for the pilgrimage. “The children had no choice, but once the trip was over they said they would do it again,” said Philippe. “They complained a little bit as they need the Internet to talk to their friends – of course we do not really have it on board, so they were annoyed by that and had no choice but to read or to play games.” That said, many of the marinas en route have WiFi. The flotilla stops in a marina every night and after three days cruising through what is (almost) guaranteed to be warm and calm weather, the pilgrims enjoys a day of relaxing in port. Activities are organised and include visits to historical places, fish markets, concerts and a wide variety of gastronomic delights such as cooking shows and tasters. Hondarribia is a firm favourite on the route. The marina was dredged into a wide-reaching beach and now it helps to maintain the existing beach by decreasing the movement of sand. There is a promenade walk to the local town, and it is only 20 minutes from San Sebastian – said to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Basque country and also the capital of Spanish cuisine. Other stunning marinas along the route include Gijon and Coruña. The cost of taking part in the flotilla is 500 Euros per boat plus 100 Euros per crew member. This includes berthing, activities and merchandising, which Fabienne says is a brilliant price. “We spend two months every summer on our boat. Normally we would anchor in a creek, but this is a great way to stay in lovely marinas and explore Spain.” sailtheway.es

LONDON YACHT SHOW Landing at St Katharine Dock in May, London Yacht Show will bring together many of the world’s finest yacht brands, lu ury products and super cars BRINGING THE LUXURY
T
he London On Water Boat Show has been renamed, rebranded and relaunched as London Yacht Show and will take place at St Katharine Dock from 8 – 12 May. It is going to be a show unlike any other where visitors will be enticed by superyachts, on-water shopping villages, fine dining and remarkable show experiences. Running over four days on the water at St. Katharine Dock the event will offer a path of discovery for those looking to buy a yacht, charter a boat or are interested in finding out more about the yacht ownership lifestyle. Paul Tetlow, marina general manager at St. Katharine Docks, said: “We are delighted to host the show. It allows us the opportunity to showcase what St. Katharine Docks offers to a very relevant and international boating market including boat owners, suppliers and marine industry professionals.”
The relaunched show replaces London On Water Boat Show and will be organised by Informa Markets with partners, British Marine and St. Katharine Docks. The yacht show market is not new to the Informa business, which has a portfolio of well known maritime events including the Monaco Yacht Show as well as the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and Miami Yacht Show. Announcing the newly branded event, with a focus on luxury lifestyle, Andrew Williams, President, Maritime, Informa Global Exhibitions, said: “Since we acquired this event at the end of 2018, we have worked to understand the needs of the event’s exhibitors and have consequently taken the decision that we needed to relaunch this event with a brand new focus on luxury lifestyle yachting and boating, complemented by luxury brands. “In addition, we are delighted that our new partnership with British Marine, the UK’s trade association for the leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry and organisers of Southampton Boat Show, is firmly cemented and they support this new event.” Following the event’s relaunch as London Yacht Show huge names from the world of yachts were added to the already impressive exhibitor list. Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline joined the likes of Bayliner, Bavaria Power & Sail, Discovery Yachts, Sunsail Yacht Ownership and Sealine.
Andrew added: “The decision to completely relaunch this event was not taken lightly so to get the immediate support of such significant brands is a true reflection of the confidence the industry has that London Yacht Show will be an important platform in the international boat show calendar.” Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine, added: “Our alliance with Informa hopes to deepen the show’s ties to the marine industry and enable key partners, from yacht builders and brokers to luxury goods manufacturers, to participate in shaping the development and growth of London Yacht Show in the future.”
EXHIBITORS SAY…
Miles Moorhouse, Fairline Yachts head of marketing: “When we first met the Informa team, we made it clear that our requirements were for the show to attract new visitors and offer them a luxurious environment in which to interact with a broad range of high end brands. We are delighted that we were listened to and are sure that this is going to be a winner!” Colin Capewell, managing director of Princess Motor Yacht Sales: “To be able to showcase our boats in this iconic setting, on-water, is a great platform for us to reach our customer base. We look forward to supporting this event and seeing the new audience that is delivered.” Chris Head, group sales director, Sunseeker London: “I can announce that we will be bringing three Sunseekers to the event… and will have more to announce!”
For those looking for a touch of luxury the London Yacht Show will be the place to be this May

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH RYAN BREACH, ITCHENOR SAILING CLUB’S NEW SAILING MANAGER. juniors, is something my role involves a lot of. I also carefully plan and execute all Club Open Meetings and work closely with the class captains to ensure the club best meets the needs and wishes of each class.
TELL US ABOUT THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
The club has such a diverse range of events on offer, so one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing people happy, having fun and learning something new at the events and courses that the team and I work hard to organise and deliver.
WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE CLUB? Image: David Priscott
WHEN DID YOU START SAILING?
I first started sailing when I was around eight or nine-years-old at Felpham Sailing Club, which was round the corner from where my parents lived.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST BOAT?
My first boat was a Topper. After a few years I moved on to double-handers before reverting back to a single-hander after I finished university.
WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE AS SAILING MANAGER AT ITCHENOR SC INVOLVE? I see my role as primarily supporting the wonderful race programme we have here at Itchenor. An important part of the job is ensuring all race days go smoothly. Part of that is organising adequate training, as powerboat handling is vital for providing support boat cover to the race management teams. Training, specifically for
My plan is to further increase not only the amount of training that is offered to both adults and juniors at a grassroots level, but also the amount of higher level class coaching that is offered to all adopted classes.
WHAT DOES THE CLUB DO TO ENCOURAGE YOUNGER SAILORS?
Itchenor offers great training and events for young sailors. Training runs from April until late October with two weeks in the middle of summer dedicated to the club’s popular Junior Fortnight event. Junior Fortnight is the sailing and social event of the year for eight to 18-year-olds of all abilities and features some great competitive racing in a number of different classes accompanied by a fantastic social programme. The club also hosts The Schools Championships, which started at Itchenor in 1953. Schools Week mixes a high standard of top end sailing for young people with opportunities for sailors of all levels to compete further down the fleet. Students from across the country race in RS Fevas, Fireflys and 420s in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
My biggest inspiration is Roger Belton. He got me interested in teaching sailing and encouraged me, giving me the confidence to teach elsewhere.
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR SAILING BACKGROUND.
Whilst at university I was Bournemouth University Sailing Teams Men’s Captain and First Team Coach.
Image: New Forest Studio
Ryan is the sailing manager at the popular Itchenor Sailing Club. Image: New Forest Studio
WHAT MAKES ITCHENOR A GREAT SAILING CLUB?
Not only is Itchenor a beautiful place to be, but the club’s position in Chichester Harbour means that races and training courses can be run at any state of the tide. Add to that a world class racing programme and varied social calendar and you have the recipe for the perfect club!
CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS WHAT ELSE IS COMING UP IN 2019? This year Itchenor Sailing Club is hosting the Mirror Southern Championships in May and the Sharpie Europeans in August, along with other class opens throughout the year.

EXPERTS’ FORUM
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. are used more frequently should be easily accessible with less frequently used features grouped separately. The bottom line is always have a play; some of the software now is really very intuitive, easy to customise and simple to update.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SOFTWARE FOR ELECTRONICS recommendation would always be that you try before you buy if you can – most marine manufacturers attend boat shows, so if there is one close to you always try and go along. Publications like All at Sea run exhibitor lists for major shows, so you will know who will be attending.
ALAN WATSON, AN EX MERCHANT NAVY RADIO OFFICER AND A CONSULTANT IN MARINE ELECTRONICS AND RADAR, DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF SOFTWARE. I am often asked for advice from people who are looking to upgrade an existing system, or choose a new system, on what the most important consideration should be. These days, hardware features are fairly similar, but the big differentiator is the operating software. My best
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS Key things I would consider are to make sure that you feel the software is intuitive and that the features you most frequently use are easy to find and operate. Software for many is still a bit of an unknown, so knowing what level of customer support and training you can expect is just as important. Another, very important, consideration is the frequency of software upgrades. Regular software updates are vital, not only do they help to keep your system running smoothly, protecting it from inevitable bugs, but also give you access to the latest features, which will invariably be to your benefit. At the end of the day, though, whatever software you choose I would always recommend to keep your software running on the latest version.

HAPPY TO HELP Marine electronic systems contain complex stuff and from time to time we all need a bit of help. Knowing there is an after-sales telephone support staff who will talk you through step-by-step to solve a query can be a real advantage when considering your purchase. Also, a manufacturer-provided training course is probably about as good a way for getting to know your system as you can get. Fundamentally in an age where so much is online it is refreshing just to be able to chat to and meet people who will help and answer your questions. www.raymarine.co.uk In recognition of a lifetime in the maritime world, Alan was made a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights and a Freeman of the City of London – an honour bestowed on few...

IN SEARCH OF POWER As far as the unit running the software is concerned, look for hardware with a strong processing power – multi function displays are really not hugely different to computers where the term quad core processors is not uncommon – in simple terms the more powerful the processing function the quicker the unit can respond, interpret new data as well as add new
applications and have the capacity to cope with future developments. Take the latest developments in ‘augmented reality’ that merge visual and AIS/chart data to highlight vessels and navigation marks that may not always be visible to the naked eye – giving their distance from you and direction they are travelling in to enable a quick assessment of the situation. A unit that can give the skipper a clue of where to look for an elusive buoy or distant ship can only be an added benefit.

GIVE SAILING A TRY F
or children and young people, sailing and windsurfing can provide a real antidote to the stresses of school, screens and social media, while for grownups it is a great way to get outdoors, switch off from the demands of work and daily life, as well as improving fitness. For the competitive, there is racing. The RYA’s Try Sailing in May campaign will be inviting people to Push the Boat Out for little or no cost, with open days offering taster sessions throughout the month at hundreds of sailing clubs and watersports centres across the country, at inland lakes and reservoirs, as well as on the coast. The campaign is all about making it as simple as possible for people to get on the water. A variety of accessible and fun options are then available for those who are inspired as a result to take up sailing or windsurfing, or return to the sport following a break.
A NEW CHAPTER
Karen Corley discovered a love of sailing and a new passion for life after trying the sport for the first time during a Push the Boat Out open day at her local club in 2016. Having lost her husband the year before and given up her job in London, Karen decided to go along to the Marconi Sailing Club event after looking out over its stunning Blackwater estuary location in Essex on a cycle ride around her home village. “I was completely lost and lacking in confidence at the time,” she recalls, “but everyone at the club was really friendly and made me feel very welcome. I went out in a Pico dinghy with someone and it was a fairly brisk wind that day, so we got a bit wet, but I really enjoyed it and had a fabulous time.” It would be the start of a whole new chapter for Karen, who turns 60 this year. She joined the club and learnt how to sail, progressing to dinghy racing and crewing on yachts, and is now signed up for the Australia-China leg of the next Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. As a semi-retired freelance consultant, Karen says she is very much sailing on a shoestring but has nevertheless found the sport extremely accessible: “When I first joined Marconi I borrowed one of the club Toppers available for members’ use - a small singlehanded dinghy - and a generous friend lent me hers, and I did that for about a year before I had the chance to buy a second-hand one. With dinghy sailing especially, you do not have to spend lots of money to do it, and if you want to go yacht sailing, lots of people want crew all the time.” Karen enjoys the independence and decision-making of sailing her oneperson Topper dinghy and by contrast, the teamwork of sailing bigger boats as a crew for the club’s cruiser-racing fleet of yachts. She refers to the club as her second home but says her three grown up children would argue it is her first home! Explaining what captured her imagination about sailing, she adds: “I love being out in the elements and it is a beautiful spot on the Blackwater. I like to challenge myself and go out in quite lively winds, that is part of the fun, and I enjoy learning new things. “Once you are out in a boat on the water, you have to focus on what you are doing, so you are just transported somewhere else – it is another world.”

A WARM WELCOME FOR ALL
Family-friendly Marconi Sailing Club will again be one of the venues opening its doors to all comers for Push the Boat Out this May. Among the club’s ambassadors will be new members who have joined in the last two years, who will be taking visitors on the water and sharing their experiences of what it is like to learn a watersport. Liz Kirby from the club says: “People are always a little bit nervous when they come to look around but it is a great opportunity for them to have a go at sailing or windsurfing and have a chat with members, including those who have only just started themselves, and see that actually anyone can give this a go and it can be really good!” Like many sailing and yacht clubs, Marconi has a ‘learn to sail’ pathway of RYA-recognised courses and ongoing supported sessions catering for all ages from eight to 80, enabling new members to gradually learn and practice new skills with experienced instructors and sailors. “Push the Boat Out is always a fabulous day for visitors to see what we offer and to have a go at something they may never have done before,” says Liz. “It is a really safe environment, giving people the confidence to get out on the water, and it is fun!”
SAILING WHEREVER YOU LIVE
Many people are inspired to join a club on the day, while others take away the details with an invitation to return at any time during the year if they want to find out more. There were more than 375 Push the Boat Out (#PTBO) events nationwide in 2018 and this year’s campaign is again on course to offer anyone who has ever wondered if sailing or windsurfing might be for them, a chance to find out. As PTBO Programmed Manager Michelle Gent explains: “Wherever you live in the country there will be a Try Sailing in May event near you! “Come along if you have never tried sailing or windsurfing before but want to see if getting on the water might be for you. Likewise we would love to welcome you aboard if you have kids and are looking for an outdoor adventure, or if you are a single person looking for a community, or a lapsed sailor or windsurfer looking for a way to get back on board. “Find out what is going on in your local area and get involved.” In 2018 more than 39,000 people attended an event, with over 3,500 new sailors and windsurfers joining their local club as a result. FOILING MASTERCLASS
A foiling masterclass with the British Sailing Team’s John Gimson and Anna Burnet. FOILING has really become a mainstream form of sailing in the last 15 years. Despite being a concept for a long time, its showcasing in the 34th America’s Cup and the increasing popularity of the International Moth class has raised the profile and increased accessibility to sailors. The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo will feature a foiling event for the first time in the form of the Nacra 17, which was modified to a fully foiling catamaran after the 2016 Olympics.
WHAT IS FOILING?
Foiling is when a boat sails above the water on its hydrofoils. In layman’s terms the hydrofoils work like an aeroplane wing under the water. When the boat reaches its take-off speed, enough lift is
created from the foils to lift the hull clean out of the water. This massively reduces the drag as the hulls are lifted out of the water into the air, which is 1,000 times less dense. This big reduction in drag allows for a large increase in speed. There are two common types of foiling boats. Boats like the Waszp and the Moth use a ‘wand’ controlling a flap on the trailing edge of the horizontal foil. This works very much like an aeroplane wing – when the boat gets close to the water, the wand makes the flap go down to create more lift. The other common type of foiling is what is used on the Nacra 17 and is a more crude approach. The boat also self-regulates ride height, but this self-

TOP TIPS

THE Mastercla ss
Foiling is an incredible way to sail and if you are going to be having a go, here are two top tips! Tip 1: The take-off n Keep the rig powered up until you are flying – you need power for the take off! n Do not overdo the foil rake until you reach take-off speed n A small and quick ease in mainsheet will reduce mast foot pressure and help the take-off, but be ready to sheet back on as the apparent wind goes forwards! Tip 2: Stable flight n Reaction time is key for stable flight. In the Nacra 17 sailors are always pre-empting the changes in pitch and moving their body weight very quickly as it happens. The relationship between steering, sail trim and body weight is key. Every time you steer you will need to compensate for the adjustment through moving. An ease of sheets or a head-up will require body weight forwards and vice versa.
regulation relies on the shape of the foil and how much of it is under water. When the boat goes faster it lifts higher out of the water and the lifting area of the foils below waterline is reduced. Sailors control the flight of the boat by changing the angle of attack on the foils. This is done through pitch control (moving their body weight fore and aft) or by pulling a rope to put more or less rake on the dagger boards. The better the control system, the more aggressive the shape of the foils can be. For example, the foils used in the latest
America’s Cup yachts were very ‘L’ shaped, whereas the foils on a Nacra 17 or A-class are more ‘Z’ shaped. An ‘L’ shaped board is very unforgiving as the whole lifting surface comes out of the water at once. A ‘Z’ shaped board is more forgiving because the lifting surface progressively comes out of the water as the boat gets higher. A forgiving design of foil requires less accurate control but also will not be as fast because it is not such an efficient way to create lift.

S
ave the date: 13 - 17 May is Invasive Species Week. It is your chance to get involved and protect your club waters from invasive aquatic species by taking advantage of free signs and materials. Unwanted non-native plants and animals are invading our waterways and pose a serious threat to our lakes, rivers, streams and coastline. Once in a waterway these invasive species can disperse rapidly, adversely affecting recreational facilities, reducing fish populations and restricting navigation. Invasive non-native species can block up waterways, make navigation difficult and cause irreparable damage to the environment – and as a water user you may unknowingly be spreading
them from one water body to another. Animals, eggs, larvae and tiny plant fragments can easily be carried on equipment, shoes and clothing, and some can survive out of water in damp conditions for more than two weeks. Since the launch of the Check, Clean, Dry campaign in 2011, The Green Blue and the RYA has provided a wealth of information and guidance to inland and coastal clubs about the steps they can take to minimise the spread of invasive nonnative species.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
If you are inspired by the great work going on to prevent invasive non-native species from spreading and reduce the impact of those that already have, why not get involved?
FACTS AND FIGURES
Around 2,000 non-native plants and animals from all over the world have been introduced to the UK by people There has been a dramatic increase in the number of species arriving in recent years and there is no indication of this trend slowing Most non-native species are harmless but

Invasive non-native invertebrates such as the killer shrimp, zebra mussels and signal crayfish can have a harmful effect on our freshwater environment. These organisms can reproduce rapidly, compete with or eat our native species and spread diseases and parasites. The RYA and British Marine’s joint environmental campaign, The Green Blue, has developed a series of guidance videos for boaters on how to Check, Clean, Dry their craft including specific windsurf, dinghy, powerboat and personal watercraft best practice. Campaign Manager for The Green Blue, Kate Fortnam, explains: “It is in everyone’s interest to protect the natural environment that supports our recreational boating; that is why it is so important to check, clean and dry all your equipment after use so as to minimise the spread of alien species or diseases.”

FACING THE GALERNAS Skipper Nick Ellis and his wife share their experiences of the galernas while sailing on oard their yacht naway in the as e o ntry.
It was wonderful to arrive at the Bidassoa River. Image: Nick Ellis

W
e had crossed Biscay by the coastal route with the intention of visiting the Basque Country in the south east corner of the Bay. Arriving in the Bidassoa River was a real delight as the mountains slowly began to emerge ahead of us in the early morning light, a real contrast to the flat, sandy beaches that stretch for well over a 100nm from the Gironde Estuary. The river forms the border between France and Spain. To port is Hendaye in France and to starboard, Hondarribia in Spain. Both are Basque but they could not be more different in their national identities. This really is a lovely spot and worthy as a destination in its own right. Having settled down for a few days in Hendaye, the weather in May was gloriously sunny, and from the French side you can look across to the wonderful green mountains of northern Spain. The beach is lovely and stretches for 3km back down the coast towards St Jean de Luz, and so we decided to have a swim. After a pleasant dip we relaxed, sheltering from the sun under our small parasol. Within 20 minutes, strong gusts of wind started blowing across the water from Spain, the sand started moving and then the parasol took off down the beach at a rate of knots. Once I had retrieved the parasol we retreated back to the boat. Within a few minutes of arriving I decided to sort the lines out on the boat as the wind increased. Just then the large black RIB of the Gendarmerie (French Customs) arrived and four heavily armed officers dressed in black and looking very sinister pulled up alongside our pontoon. The first jumped ashore and, armed with a machine gun, strode towards me. At a relatively uncomfortable distance he stopped: “Do you have any guns or drugs on board,” he shouted, looking me straight in the eye. I am sure he could tell by my look of complete bewilderment that we certainly did not. Satisfied, he moved off
to view the boat. The other officers then boarded and a more senior one took over asking some really standard questions. He soon concluded that we were genuine visitors coming from northern parts. By now the wind was howling and the boat was straining on her lines, at times heeling over. “Do not worry,” he reassured us, “it is just a local wind we get here. It will not last long.” They left, bidding us a “bon apres midi”. Half an hour later the strong wind had disappeared. This was our first experience of the strong catabatic winds in this part of northern Spain we had read about.
HEADING TO SPAIN
After a week in Hendaye we decided to move over to the Spanish side at Hondarribia. Totally different and very Spanish, we enjoyed the evening entertainment and Pinchos, as tapas are known in this part of Spain. As in many Spanish towns, Hondarribia has old and new towns. Here the old town is especially nice as there are many narrow, cobbled streets leading uphill to the centrepiece, a delightful square with cafes and a Parador, which takes in the view across the river entrance and France. It was here we had our second experience of these strong catabatic winds. The temperature was very hot and humid, with little or no wind throughout the morning. We decided to have lunch in the square and had just arrived, finding a safe place for the bikes behind the Parador, in the shade. I wanted to take a picture of the view and moved to a better vantage point. To my amazement the clouds that had been building high in the mountains all morning suddenly started ‘sliding’ down the grassy banks of the mountain side in front of me, rather like a river. As they reached beach level, great clouds of sand dust started and it became clear that this down flow had been the wind coming down from the mountain. Eventually it engulfed the river entrance and spread across to Hendaye beach with the same effect. It must have been blowing 35 to 40 knots and several boats entering the river were very hard pressed
Galernas blowing across the beach and entrance to the Bidassoa River. Image: Nick Ellis
indeed. Astonishingly a couple of miles or so out to sea there were yachts sailing with full sail not remotely impacted by this very localised phenomena. Within a few minutes the wind started to increase in our square and the neatly ordered sun awnings, tables and chairs of the cafes at the far end, some 50m away, promptly collapsed leaving a solitary coffee drinker sitting alone and very nearly blown away. The cafe owners rushed out to recover the scene and I noticed two old Spanish ladies sat in a doorway nearby. In all this commotion they looked at one another and I heard them mutter “Galernas”! They then promptly stood up, moved quickly inside and closed their door behind them. Clearly this was not an unusual occurrence. After about two hours it was as if a switch was thrown and we returned to sunny and still weather with no wind at all. There was, however, a distinct change in temperature and a bit of a chill in the air. We had now been fully introduced to the Galernas.
THE SCIENCE
I am not a meteorologist but have read that these Galernas coincide with high pressure and the passage of a cold front across the area ahead of a change in the weather pattern. A review of the weather map at the time, on both occasions, indicated high pressure in-situ and a cold front passing through the area which seems to support this view. At a practical level, on both of these occasions, it seemed to me that these strong catabatic winds occurred at a time when the temperature was hot and humid, and immediately after the event the humid air was replaced by
“To my amazement the clouds that had been building high in the mountains all morning suddenly started ‘sliding’ down the grassy banks of the mountain side in front of me, rather like a river.” much cooler temperatures. The other significant feature, of course, was the high mountains where there must be a significant temperature difference between mountain top and beach level. I guess eventually the heavier, colder air just ‘slips’ down the mountain. From here on during this cruise, if close to high ground and whenever we had hot, humid temperatures, I kept a closer eye on the weather map, watching out for the forecast of an approaching cold front.
THIRD GALERNA
We were to experience the Galernas on one final occasion before we left the Basque Country, in Bilbao, its capital. The anchorage in Bilbao harbour is completely enclosed, miles from the open sea and one would think an ideal spot, being close to all the facilities and easy access to the metro and the city. The weather had again been hot and humid and we were berthed in Getxo Marina. Early in the morning the wind suddenly increased from zero to F6 and I thought, “Here we go again”! I had seen a yacht anchor that evening, an Oyster 39 as I recall, so I headed down the pontoon to see how
they were getting on - by now it was up to F7 gusting F8. The marineros were on hand and watching from the nearby harbour wall, one already in the marina RIB should things become problematic. As cool as anything the skipper came up on deck, checked his tackle and returned below, confident all would be well. A prudent skipper who had set his anchor the night before to deal with exactly this occurrence. An hour or so later the worst was over and the wind disappeared as on previous occasions. We had three Galernas during our three week stay in the Basque Country, but the temperatures were hot due to the high pressure systems dominating our weather at that time. Whether this is typical or not, I do not know but I certainly would not let it stop me visiting the Basque Country, both French and Spanish, again; it is a wonderful location full of interest and variety. Note: The comments made here on meteorology are the author’s own interpretation and should be considered as such. This article first appeared in Cruising Magazine.

ROPES & BLOCKS Bill takes a look at the running rigging and deck hardware to make sure it’s clean and ready for the season ahead he nds this sim le’ o isn’t ite as easy as he tho ght. Sliding bearing For hi-load, lo-movement applications
Ball bearing For medium load, hi-movement applications
I
must confess that for the past few weeks I’ve been strutting the pontoon gleefully looking at all the boats yet to be lifted and cleaned; knowing I have the boat with probably the smoothest and cleanest bum (below water area) in the marina. We have already had a few very pleasant sojourns out of the marina as the odd warm day has snuck out from a relatively mild winter – and oh my what a difference a smooth, clean bottom makes. With time on my hands before I can seriously begin cleaning the topsides and redoing the varnish (again!!!) in readiness for the start to the season, I have been looking for a mini project to keep me occupied and below the radar of ‘The Admiral’ (alias Mrs Selsey). Since replacing all the running rigging (halyards, sheets and mooring lines) almost five years ago, my maintenance regime has been non-existent apart from ensuring they were meticulously coiled when not in use. All my best intentions of removing the sheets from the furling headsail and boom when putting the boat to bed have sadly gone by the wayside. The ropes are once again looking very sad as they have been left
“This was all music to the ears of The Admiral as I had been hell bent on getting the instructions out for the washing machine” coiled over the cockpit winches and on the side-deck gathering grime and dirt, turning a rather nasty shade of green. Mini project identified – wash all running rigging. Yet again – easily said! Once you get started, it’s not really a mini project but another minefield of do’s and don’ts to get my poor old head around. All too aware I could become a ‘rope bore’ I won’t subject you to my reams of research notes, so here is a brief summary. A few facts: never wash a new rope, they are treated at manufacture with coatings and protectants – washing, even with mild detergents destroys these, thus shortening the life of the rope. Due to its rather soft and lose construction, the inner core of new double-braid dock line washed in a machine can herniate through the outer shell – ouch, sounds rather painful!
Quite unbelievably and bearing in mind the abuse they get whilst being used, but in a machine wash rope splices can come loose unless whipped and stitched. Most ropes in one form or another are vulnerable to overly vigorous washing. It will always be preferential to give them a good light scrubbing with a brush if you must and leave it at that. This was all music to the ears of The Admiral as I had been hell bent on getting the instructions out for the washing machine (we’ve only had it 10 years)! What I gleaned from most of what I read is that if you must wash a rope in a machine, think twice; are you willing to ruin the rope and heaven forbid the machine as well? If so, then take sensible and proven precautions: whip and stitch all the splices or they’ll come loose, whip or thoroughly melt and fuse all rope ends, cover shackles with old
Needle bearing For hi-load, hi-movement applications
For your nearest stockist – just ask Bainbridge
socks to protect the machine (damage certainly wouldn’t go down well) and the shackle, always coil tightly or daisy chain the rope, and package the rope in a pillowcase. Skip the pillowcase and expect both rope and machine damage. And certainly, use the gentle cycle. If the gentle cycle doesn’t do, soak first and then scrub a bit by hand. As for soaps, cleaners and chemicals, ordinary laundry detergents at ordinary doses are fine for older ropes (remember—you shouldn’t be washing new ropes) and an extended soak in a mild detergent really helps soften stains without risking damage. Bleach didn’t do much that the sun won’t do and poses much greater risk. Acid is deadly to ropes; don’t even consider it. Follow these simple rules, and I’m sure you’ll be as pleased with the condition and cleanliness of your ropes as I am with mine. Isn’t it amazing how quickly things snowball when you start one ‘small project’ on a boat? With the sheets and halyards all pristine and ready to be rereeved, my attention was drawn to the state of the hardware (blocks). I never realised how over the years I’ve managed to accrue at least one block or ‘widgety thing’ from virtually every manufacturer. With cap (and roses) in hand it was back to The Admiral to debate the benefits of a(nother) small investment in our my pride and joy! With a limited budget and renewed spring in my step my attention was soon absorbed in the numerous websites of manufacturers and suppliers of blocks and hardware. It was during a well-earned tea break and scanning the March issue of All at Sea that I stumbled across an advert on page 14 for Sprenger, a range of German manufactured blocks. With over 145 years manufacturing experience; almost 70 years more than most of their competitors; I figure they know best what they’re doing. Never has such a technical topic like the bearings used in blocks been explained and laid out so well. Within a few minutes of reading the advert, I knew exactly what type of blocks I should be using for the various applications. As Sprenger is new to the UK, not all chandlery outlets have them in stock yet – but thankfully I managed to source what I need and spent many very satisfying hours setting up the various systems to refit to the boat. When I started this mini project, never in my wildest dreams did I envisage coming across or using daisy chains and pillow cases in my rope maintenance. What next?

ALL AT SEA APRIL 2019
BOAT JUMBLES - THE FUTURE! Chris Chaddock, a partner in Chaddock & Fox Promotions the largest organiser of boat jumbles in the loo s ac at years of oat m le sales and reflects on the changing landsca e for this market place and draws parallels with the current woes of high street retailers.
Turn to page 44 coming for a guide to up ound boating events ar ding the country inclu a number of boat jumbles.
W
hile small charitable boat jumbles run by yacht clubs or RNLI supporters have been around for ever, the larger commercial boat jumbles began 40 years ago with the advent of the Beaulieu Boat Jumble at The National Motor Museum in The New Forest way back in 1978. This show started an industry of commercially organised boat jumbles which grew in their heyday to 44 events per annum of which Beaulieu remained the largest and the unrivalled flagship. It was with great sadness, therefore, to boat jumble aficionados that Beaulieu Enterprises announced in November 2018 that they were dropping the famous boat jumble from their calendar of 2019 events. This mighty event regularly attracted 20,000 visitors and 500 plus exhibitors in the 1980s and 1990s, when throngs of like-minded boating people from around the globe all searching for nautical treasure amongst the acres and acres of sellers turned up in droves. Some sellers only ever attended this one boat jumble eschewing all others; out of a sense of loyalty many had been to all 40 since 1978. Other highlights included a Coastguard helicopter fly past and the Grand RNLI auction at the close of the day. Happy Days! 2018 apparently saw the sellers at Beaulieu down to a few hundred and guests down to around 8,000 or so. The events team at Beaulieu had tried various combinations of stall pricing and entry fee combinations in recent years to entice more attendees but to no avail and the trend was inextricably downward, leading to its demise. So why has this show and other major marine related events declined in popularity?
will be just 19 - a reduction of over 50 per cent. Like the shops, if footfall at an event falls below a commercially viable level its days are numbered and if it cannot lower its costs then it ceases to trade. Beaulieu Enterprises state in their press release that part of the reasoning for their decision was “a decline in support due to changing times in the marine industry”, but what do they mean by this?
FALLING FOOTFALL
As an organiser of boat jumbles for more than 35 years I have seen the downturn in footfall at these marine events first hand and believe the answer is not dissimilar to the downturn in the high street retail sector. While we have recently lost Beaulieu Boat Jumble, London and Beale Park boat shows, over on the high street they have lost BHS, Toys R US, Maplin’s and Poundland to name a few. The Office for National Statistics stated that over 1,270 retail stores closed on the high street in the first half of 2018, and analysts revealed that almost every town centre in England and Wales had declined since 2013, with some losing more than a fifth of their stores.
Retailers have been facing the perfect storm with the inflation rate above wage increases and the uncertainty over Brexit, consumers have reined in their spending. Inflation is not the only pressure retailers face; the National Minimum Wage and the new National Living Wage for over 25s go up each year pushing up payroll costs while higher rents and business rates are pushing some businesses into administration. High street retailers also face massive competition from the online sector, complaining that they do not compete on the same terms. Online giants such as Amazon have had a huge influence on the high street as more consumers see buying online as less expensive and more convenient, leading to a downturn in footfall in shops. Drawing a parallel between high street retailers and boat jumbles is not difficult; in 1995 the Boat Jumble Association calendar had 44 events and in 2019 there
SOLENT BOAT JUMBLE
Our company, Chaddock & Fox Promotions, has reduced its events tally per year from a peak of 14 shows to a more modest seven shows in 2019. As we weed out the uneconomical shows the hope is that, like the high street shop chains that need to downsize to survive, our remaining boat jumbles will be stronger. The ONS says that consumers are looking for more of an experience while shopping such as destination based retail with high quality restaurants. Chaddock & Fox’s biggest event is the Solent Boat Jumble and meets those criteria. We have run this event twice annually (May and October) for nearly 25 years at Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley, near Southampton. Following Beaulieu’s demise it will now assume the mantle of being “The Largest Boat Jumble in the UK”, and while this is some responsibility to
uphold on behalf of our boat jumbling community we are confident we will carry it off with aplomb because the venue is magnificent and the event offers more than just retail therapy. Royal Victoria Country Park is set in 200 acres on the banks of Southampton Water, offering views of ocean going cruise liners, giant container ships and fast jet ferries dashing past. On land there is a model railway, a children’s adventure playground with adjacent café, woodland walks and the jewel in the crown is the fascinating Crimean War era Chapel, all that remains of what was once the world’s largest military hospital. Having recently enjoyed a £3 million lottery funded restoration, it features a museum and a lift up to the top of the chapel for fantastic views across to the New Forest and a ground floor café with an outdoor terrace. In the grounds of the park the latest attraction is a fairy garden that has been carved from the huge stump of a 140-year-old cedar tree featuring medieval castles, dragons and, of course, fairies and an adjacent picnic area. So after browsing the hundreds of stalls for your chandlery bargains there is plenty for the whole family to see and do; a great day out for all.
USE US OR LOSE US
I believe boat jumbles, particularly ones like Solent, will survive albeit in lower numbers and they will continue to hold a special place in our boating community’s hearts. So resist the temptation to buy your boating bits online; bring the family and come and have an exciting experience and a fun day out with thousands of likeminded boating people at the Solent Boat Jumble at Royal Victoria Country Park on 12 May from 10am. We look forward to seeing you and remember “Use us or lose us”! boat-jumbles.co.uk

MARINA FOCUS EASTBOURNE MARINA
astbourne arina ce orth ock ide acific rive Eastbourne eastbourne premiermarinas com 01323 470099
Perfect for yachting and motor boat cruising alike, this family friendly award winning marina o ers a range of facilities and a choice of waterfront cafes, restaurants and bars.
PREMIER’S Sovereign Harbour marina offers an ideal location from which to explore the coast, with Eastbourne just an hour-long stroll along the promenade and the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park a couple of miles further on. Set on the Sussex coastline, just east of Eastbourne, Sovereign Harbour comprises four harbours that together provide more than 800 berths and make up the UK’s largest composite marina. Ideal for boaters of all abilities, the marina’s spacious waterfront has cafes, bars and restaurants creating a central hub of activity. A world away from the hustle and bustle of modern urban living and a laidback haven from which to escape life’s pressures, Eastbourne is a family friendly marina that offers fantastic facilities and a great start point from which to experience the delights of France and the Channel Isles or cruise the South Coast.
With a well-stocked chandlery, 24 hour secure car parking with dedicated berth holder bays and a fully equipped boatyard, Eastbourne’s sheltered waters, secured behind two high-speed locks, also make the marina a great place to permanently berth your boat. Not just a good place to berth, Eastbourne offers a lively and vibrant waterside experience, with eclectic restaurants, bars and cafés, hair and beauty salons, a specialist dental and cosmedical centre and shops including a supermarket close by. The marina also has an active berth holders’ association, formed in 1999 and RYA affiliated, organising a range of activities from winter talks to anchoring workshops, boat jumbles and cruise in company outings. Premier Marinas acquired The Waterfront in spring 2018 and is planning an exciting programme that is designed to re-energise and re-present The Waterfront with a number of events and attractions that will be of interest to berth holders and visitors alike. As part of this regeneration Premier has rebranded The Waterfront with new signage and plans a new website. Alongside entertainment such as live music, events being organised include a pop-up food market in May, an outdoor cinema experience, ‘Film by the Water’, in July, plus family inspired attractions – an urban beach in June and an outdoor climbing wall in October.
FACILITIES
Eastbourne’s facilities have earned the marina The Yacht Harbour Association’s Five Gold Anchor Award and include three luxury toilets, shower and launderette blocks, a chandlery and a self-store facility for local residents and boat owners to stow away boat accessories and equipment – with flexible rental periods, starting from just £10 per week. Along with eatery options at The Waterfront, the thriving on site yacht club located adjacent to The Waterfront’s free car park, offers light bites, lunch and delicious roasts on a Sunday and is where the thriving Dinghy Training Centre is located. The club offers membership to Premier berth holders and welcomes
visiting yachtsman; hosting an extensive racing and cruising programme and plenty of year round social events. Eastbourne’s boatyard team provide year-round lift, high-pressure wash and block-off and re-launch services that include the use of an Italian Ascombe 50 tonne travel lift (soon to be upgraded to a Wise 60t machine) and a 1.5 tonne jib crane for mast work. Alongside the travel lift, the marina also benefits from a new towing tractor; a 20 tonne boat mover and a specialist forklift truck. Eastbourne is also home to nine businesses, which include a mix of marine tenants. These companies offer everything from rigging services to marine electronics, cosmetic work, valeting and engineering. In
addition there is a brokerage and an independent chandlery. Tim Nicholls Yacht Services stocks all essential items for working on your boat including rope, fenders, lifejackets, paint and antifoul, boat cleaning products, fittings and shackles, GRP supplies, electrical essentials and much more. It also offers a cutting and printing service whereby the staff cut and apply boat names and decals and print crew shirts and clothing. Customers can also pop in to purchase hot and cold drinks and confectionery.

CRUISING
The famed white cliffs are a beautiful sight and Seven Sisters, leading to Beachy Head, are a particular highlight. Always a popular backdrop to anchor up and have a spot of lunch, this area lends itself well to bass fishing because of its deep waters. Eastbourne Marina is an excellent base for local day trips to Premier’s Brighton Marina and Chichester Marina, where Premier berth holders
can take advantage of their 42 free visitor nights. The marina is also a great base for South Coast cruising and cross Channel hops over to northern France; Dieppe and Fécamp being the favoured destinations. For those who want to stay close to UK shores; a couple of days can be spent marina hopping and enjoying marina life in the sheltered waters of the Solent one of the busiest and most famous sailing areas in the world.
BERTHING & STORAGE
Opened in 1993 by Princess Diana, the marina has 800 permanent berths, with some 5,000 yachts visiting each year. The marina offers competitively priced annual berthing contracts that can be paid on an annual or monthly basis. Eastbourne benefits from extensive storage ashore which, when coupled with the marina’s dedicated onsite marine services, makes Eastbourne’s boatyard offering among the best on the South Coast for boat repairs and maintenance. Premier berth holders are entitled to a minimum of eight weeks free storage ashore and discounts on self-storage units within Premier Self Store.
ACCESS
THINGS TO DO
LOCAL EATERIES
Eastbourne’s facilities include a wide range of eateries to choose from including a thriving yacht club, where the clubhouse provides fantastic views over the North Harbour and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the marina. The Waterfront is the destination for both visitors and locals. With its variety of restaurants, bars and cafes to tempt you – Italian food, Indian and Thai cuisine as well as a family friendly diner, a Harvester and two wine and music bars. Just moments away from the marina is an ASDA, located in the Crumbles, close to The Waterfront.
Royal Sovereign lighthouse, located 6.8 miles offshore from Eastbourne, marks the Royal Sovereign shoal. Its distinctive shape is easily recognised as it comprises a large platform supported by a single pillar rising out of the water. Fishing enthusiasts like to anchor up there and wait out for a catch – the deep waters attract a lot of bass. Eastbourne itself is bursting with so many things to see and do; boasting three theatres for those after a cultural experience. Home to a £85 million shopping centre, The Beacon is the spot to indulge in some retail therapy and for the ultimate beachside experience, head down to the 300m pier for a brisk walk, wind in your hair affair and finish up at The Victorian Tea Rooms for an indulgent afternoon tea for two – or some traditional fish and chips whilst soaking up the atmosphere at the Jazz Lounge/ Blues Kitchen. Now celebrating 27 years of airshow excellence, every summer Eastbourne plays host to the award-winning International Airbourne Show (15 - 19 August) which features a two mile flying display line along Eastbourne’s shoreline.
The perfect location for both yachts and powerboats, Eastbourne Marina consists of four separate harbours. The Outer Harbour forms the entrance to the marina and is tidal, whilst the Inner, South, North and West Harbours are entered through two high capacity locks, both manned 24 hours, 365 days a year and offering in-water berthing for 800 boats up to 32m in length. On approach from the East or SouthEast, remain alert for the tide rips over the Royal Sovereign Shoal, the Horse of Willingdon and the inshore Coxheath Shoal. Be aware of the Barnhill Wreck situated just north and east of the dredged channel. The wreck does show on the charts, and is shielded by both outer starboard buoys, and a special mark position on the trailing edge of the wreck footprint seaward of its position. The dredged channel starts at the safe water mark, and is dredged to 2.4mtrs below CD. Approach is relatively simple, by following the leading light through to the breakwaters. Buoyage is illuminated throughout, as are both breakwaters and the Xeon white light situated high on the Martello Tower. Eastbourne is a locked marina and on arrival at the calling point, visitors must call ‘Sovereign Harbour’ on VHF Channel 17 to request a lock in. Following a light sequence; always act on the lock traffic signals and obey instructions from the lock keeper. By road, the marina is situated 2.5 miles east of Eastbourne on the A259 Pevensey Bay Road going to Bexhill-OnSea and Hastings. Eastbourne is just 44 miles south of the M25 and less than an hour from London Gatwick Airport.

COASTAL AWARDS FOR BUCKLER’S AND TORQUAY
Buckler’s Hard Harbour Master Wendy Stowe celebrates their win
BUCKLER’S Hard Yacht Harbour is celebrating being named as winner of the Coastal Marina of the Year in The Yacht Harbour Association (THYA) awards. Recognising the best of over 160 Gold Anchor accredited marinas around the globe, boaters vote for their favourite marina looking at the quality of the marina facilities and the customer service received from the marina staff. The Beaulieu River and Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is one of the few privately owned estuaries in the world. Its picturesque setting and wildlife has been preserved by four centuries of custodianship by the forebears of Lord Montagu. A recent £400,000 investment in new 5-star facilities has provided an upgraded showers and facilities building. Torquay Marina is Coastal Marina of
the Year runner up for a marina over 250 berths. Mike Smith, Torquay Marina manager said: “We are delighted to receive this award and it is testament to the hard work of the team here at Torquay Marina. Knowing that this accolade is voted for by our customers on the strength of the customer service they receive makes it all the more valuable to us. “The whole process has allowed us to find out more about our customers, visitors and annual berth holders, and what is important to them. We can now take what we have learnt and further put this at the heart of what we do, therefore, continuing to improve so that we offer the best marina experience possible.” www.mdlmarinas.co.uk www.beaulieuriver.co.uk
PORTLAND MARINA’S DRY STACK IS READY AS the days get longer and boat owners look forward to getting out and spending more time on the water, the new dry stack at Portland Marina offers a convenient and accessible berthing spot. Perfect for RIBs, sportsboats, ski boats and day angling boats up to 9 metres, dry berthing is a safe and secure alternative to trailer launch or marina berths. 19 metres high, 84 metres long and with 132 berths undercover, unlike many other dry stacks in the UK, the Portland Marina Dry Stack is clad on the back, sides and roof to give protection from the elements. In addition, the marina will now have two hoists to launch boats into and out of the water to help improve efficiency . With a two hour launch service on demand, the dry stack has been built to provide storage for boat owners wanting to keep their boat within striking distance of Dorset’s stunning boating destination – perfect for cruising, diving, fishing and making the most of the Jurassic Coastline. Paul Swain, berthing manager at Portland Marina, says: “We cannot wait
to welcome new and current berth holders to Portland Marina and help them to spend as much time as possible out on the water enjoying themselves. We are also looking forward to work beginning this month on the piling for new pontoons, and by June we will be able to offer an extra 40 berths afloat perfect timing for summer adventures.” Dean & Reddyhoff are continuing to invest in Portland Marina with the build of the new dry stack, cladding and sprinkler system costing more than £900,000. Berths are available on an annual or seasonal basis and include the service of valet fuelling of petrol or diesel at cost price to all berth holders. www.deanreddyhoff.co.uk
THUMBS UP FOR CYPRUS MARINA KARPAZ Gate Marina has been named among the world’s most popular Gold Anchor-accredited marinas with recognition in the prestigious The Yacht Harbour Association’s Marina of the Year Awards 2018/19. Decided by the votes of berth holders and boat owners, the fullservice 300-berth marina on the island’s stunning Karpaz peninsula was selected as runner-up in the International Marina of the Year category. Liza Singer, Karpaz Gate Marina managing director, said: “To receive recognition again in the Marina of the Year Awards is a huge accolade for Karpaz Gate Marina because it proves we are maintaining the highest standards for our customers. “The pleasure and satisfaction of our clients are the most rewarding aspects of running the marina, so we are honoured and thankful that our berth holders have provided such positive feedback. “The award is the result of the hard work and dedication of the marina team who every day go above and beyond their duty to make sure the ROYAL CLARENCE MARINA The Bridgehead, Weevil Lane, Gosport, Hampshire. needs of all our customers are met and exceeded. Since our previous award win in 2017, we have continued to work on strengthening the services we offer, making sure all our facilities are first class, with particular emphasis on enhancements to our Technical Centre. “We are especially pleased to gain this support now as we embark on the next stage of expansion with the development of the Karpaz Gate Marina luxury boutique hotel and spa, to open by spring 2020. Over the past eight years, our aim has always been to deliver outstanding leisure and technical facilities and services, while
introducing this piece of heaven on earth to more sailors and boaters. “We hope that this new award will encourage more sailors and tourists from all over the world to come and experience Karpaz Gate Marina and North Cyprus for themselves.” Winner of the International Marina of the Year for 2017, Karpaz Gate Marina has held 5 Gold Anchors, one of the highest accolades for service and operational standards available in the industry, since 2013. THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS I
Marinas really do listen to their customers and this month we head over to Lymington Yacht a en to nd o t a o t the changes they ha e introd ced to im ro e the marina e erience for customers – new and old.
n a stunning location on the western Solent, Lymington Yacht Haven is the first marina that comes into sight as you make your way up the Lymington River. With easy access to the Georgian market town and the delights of some of the most stunning spots in the Solent, Lymington has one of the most enviable locations in the UK. This family-owned marina, part of the award-winning Yacht Havens Group, is a hive of activity all-year round, with a fullservice boatyard and the popular Haven Bar & Restaurant. However, it is the extensive range of services that make this marina one of the most desirable destinations for boat owners to reside and visit…
ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU
There is nothing worse than arriving at a marina late at night after staff have gone home. Fortunately, the Yacht Haven is staffed 24 hours a day meaning you can collect your access codes, Wi-Fi login and even top up with fuel whatever the time. This is even more useful if you are arriving at Lymington after a long passage, or you need to leave at an unsociable hour in order to catch the tides on your next journey. You can rest easy that there will be a member of staff on-hand to help. From interior and exterior cleaning to engine checks, refuelling and project management, the Yacht Haven is now offering these services for annual berth holders in their new ‘On Board’ concierge scheme. The service, which is tailored
to boat owners’ requirements, can also include emptying dehumidifiers, laundry, pump out and even unpacking food shopping into your fridge. If you need that extra bit of space on board, or you are a keen racer who needs to remove cruising gear ahead of racing, a nearby storage locker is a must. The Boat Owner’s Lockers at the Yacht Haven are ideally placed on the pontoon ensuring owners do not need to walk far with their belongings. 650 pontoon berths Full tide access Space ashore for 230 boats serviced with power and water Dry berthing for RIBs and motor boats 50 ton travel hoist and mobile crane Luxury washroom and laundrette Free Wi-Fi 24 hour on-water fuel station The Haven Bar & Restaurant
JOIN THE CLUB
Located in the centre of Lymington, Haven Quay is a busy dry stack marina and boatyard for boats up to 10m LOA (five tonnes in weight). Offering lifts and launches seven days a week with yearround access, the site offers dry berthing for 55 boats plus storage ashore for more than 150. One of the basic requirements for all boat owners is stepping off your boat on to a large, stable pontoon. Lymington Yacht Haven continue to invest heavily in their facilities with 20 new finger pontoons installed this winter, with a further 40 new fingers installed over the previous three years. This includes
able to choose from a Merry Fisher 695, Gemini RIB 650 and an Axopar 28. As part of the annual membership, the Yacht Haven will provide RYA Level 2 Powerboating training, 1-2-1 inductions on the boats and all the safety equipment you will need. Visit www. lymingtonboatclub.com to find out more.
FURTHER BUSINESSES
the opening of their new ‘W’ pontoon providing additional on-water berths for boats up to 8m LOA. New for 2019, the Yacht Haven has launched a new in-house service for berth holders with the Yacht Haven managing all the day-to-day jobs that come with boat ownership. For those currently not in boat ownership, or if they are unsure if owning a boat is right for them, Lymington Boat Club offers something new. Members can enjoy unlimited access to a fleet of brand new and professionally maintained boats for a fixed annual fee. Boats will be ready to go on your arrival with members being
From top quality boat builders, to charter companies and yacht brokers, you will find a range of companies using Lymington Yacht Haven for their operations. They include: Ancasta International Boat Sales Aquasafe Powerboat School Greenham Regis Marine Electronics James Brooke Academy Jeremy Rogers Ltd Lymington Yacht Charters Malö Yachts Nick Cox Chandlery Ocean Rigging Offshore Powerboats Ropewalk Marine Solent RIB Charters
New for 2019, Discovery Yachts Group is relocating their head office to Lymington Yacht Haven. Their new facility will be their home for new and used boat sales across their four brands: Discovery Yachts, Southerly Yachts, Bluewater Yachts and Britannia Yachts. Their new premises will officially open with a Spring Open Weekend on 6 - 7 April.
OUT & ABOUT
For days when boating is not on the agenda, the Lymington and Keyhaven Nature Reserve is a beautiful place to walk or cycle. The Reserve, which is accessible directly from the Yacht Haven, is wonderful place to bird watch with a range of unique species enjoying the marshes. The coastal footpath runs all the way to Hurst Spit (12km round trip) and it is completely flat making it perfect for cycling with the family. Bikes and electric bikes can be hired from the marina office, all equipped with helmets, lights and a map if you wish to venture further into the New Forest.

Everything’s coming up pink for spring, from pink house plaques for historic females to gins, vodkas and wines. Pink wine, i.e. rosé, is tipped for a bumper year. Supermarkets have prominent blocks of shelf space dedicated to the pink genre, mixing all types together, grape types and countries of origin and there are lots of them. The pale pink wines dominate the show and look like the way to go for spring and Easter weekend parties. Gins made pink with fruit additions to the recipe are also displayed on the same shelves. Here are a few ideas to benchmark your choices and then it is up to you.

The number of fruit flavoured gins on the shelves is growing, a predictable consequence of the flood of new craft gins that have come to market in recent years. Some are from the older established brands fighting back for a younger audience and several are labelled ‘pink’. Beefeater Pink is the regular gin flavoured and coloured by introducing strawberries. Light and fresh it is still best with tonic. At Morrisons, £18 for a 70cl bottle at the UK standard 37.5 per cent abv, a small premium over, say, a regular bottle of gin. The Chase family is famous for inventing Tyrrell’s crisps, then selling out to distil a fine vodka from their potatoes instead. They make a very good gin, too, Chase GB, and have created Chase Pink Gin made with grapefruit and pomelo as a tangy variation. It is 40 per cent abv and £38 for a 70cl bottle at Morrisons. The Chase family has now branched into wines, buying its own vineyard at Lourmarin in the Luboron region of France between Provence and the southern Rhone valley. One product is a fine rosé from Grenache grapes, Maison Williams Chase Luberon, 13 per cent abv. It comes in a fine squareshouldered 1.5 litre bottle. Not in the supermarkets, but you can buy online from Tanners Wine Merchants at £16.50. A classic rosé,5 leaving raspberries and fruits on the palate. Great for an Easter party.
