Ferry to returN

Crowdfunding has raised £12,000 to help pay for the return of the muchmissed Hayling Island ferry. As All at Sea reported last month Sir richard Branson and the virgin Kitesurfing Armada team responded to a last ditch attempt to bring back the only direct link between the island and Portsmouth with a £5,000 donation. more funding is hoped for towards the £40,000 target but the trust has now confirmed that the ferry will return to service in early August. Councillor Clare Satchwell who led the launch of the trust said: “there is so much passion for the ferry, we just need the opportunity for a reliable sustainable service that we can all support.”

iT took no time at all to sink as King Henry Viii watched the pride of his naval fleet disappear beneath the waves of the Solent in 1545. it has taken more than 400 years and a £39 million, 34-year restoration project to bring the Mary Rose back to life as a unique historical record of Tudor life. The flagship had been refitted and regunned. She was a formidable fighting platform and when the French threatened invasion, she sailed out of Portsmouth to engage the enemy in what would be known as the battle of the Solent. Disaster struck less than a mile offshore. With the breeze freshening the ship heeled alarmingly to starboard. As the monarch looked on from the battlements at Southsea castle, his flagship capsized and went down taking 500 sailors and soldiers to their deaths with just 35 survivors. Over the next four centuries there were repeated attempts to salvage parts of the wreck, buried deep in the Spithead mud. Divers confirmed it in the 1970s and in 1982 half of the hull was slowly inched to the surface watched by a worldwide TV audience. Only then could 34 years of intensive restoration start and historians had new insights into history. it is described by experts as a time capsule equivalent to Pompeii or Tutankhamun’s tomb. Historians and visitors have been able to view the wreckage as it was carefully preserved by a mist of chilled water and soluble wax in controlled conditions. Only now, thanks to Lottery funding,

is that work complete. On the 19 July, 471 years to the day after she sank, in an equally dramatic stage managed event, the wreck, a treasure of maritime archaeology, was revealed. A huge curtain, bearing Henry’s Royal standard, dropped away to reveal the hull of the Mary Rose in all her glory. Gone are the chemical sprays, the scaffolding and glass screen that had previously only part exposed the hull. in the upper gallery of the new Mary Rose Exhibition Museum, visitors can look out over the carefully positioned timbers, getting clear and unhindered views of the ship. This bird’s eye view, as if in the rigging, provides a real sense of the layout of the ship, with the immediate thought on how crammed in the sailors and fighting crew must have been. Getting close up in lower viewing galleries, uninterrupted views show just how the massive timbers of South Coast oak had been fashioned into a state-of-the-art fighting ship. Clever virtual reality interactive video displays augment the experience. Away from the hull the Mary Rose centre is full of stunning displays of artefacts also recovered from the Solent silt that preserved them for so long. Sited close by that other naval showpiece, HMS Victory, the newly revealed hull and exhibition will be a great draw for visitors to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. All at Sea will be taking a far closer and more detailed look at the design and construction of the ship in a future edition. www.maryrose.org

TRibuTES have been paid to the Fareham diver who helped discover the wreck of the Mary Rose. Edward John Towse died in hospital from pneumonia aged 82 in the same week as the reopening of the Mary Rose Museum. With Alexander McKee who died in 1992, John found the wreck during a dive in May 1965 after a search based on an 1841 Admiralty Chart they found in London’s Hydrograhic Office.

LMAX Exchange won the final ocean crossing. Image: Martin Mckeown

By Jane Hyde WE are at the height of summer and there are fantastic boating events happening both here and abroad. If you love sport you will be in for a very busy month with the highlights being the Olympic Games and Cowes Week. It is great to be a fan of a sport in which we excel at the Olympics. Team GB is definitely one of the sailing teams to beat at Rio. We were third in the sailing medal table in 2012, and the team will be hoping to be top this time around. We have a really strong group of sailors (read all about them on page 17) heading to Rio with some very real medal prospects including Giles Scott, Bryony Shaw and Nick Thompson. I will be particularly supporting Saskia Clark, in the 470, who is a Colchester girl like me. The sailing action kicks off on 8 August. Good luck to everyone in Team GB. Closer to home is the hugely popular Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, which will see thousands of competitors enjoying some magnificent racing – and great shoreside facilities. If you are taking part or cheering on friends and family have a wonderful time and send us some photos. You can read our preview guide on page 26. As a lover of history I was fascinated by all the Mary Rose coverage about the re-opening of the Mary Rose Museum after a £5.4m revamp. Visitors can now enjoy a full, uninterrupted view of the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s flagship.

17

It is amazing to think it is 34 years since the war ship was raised from the Solent and yet, with such an amazing history, she still fascinates us. I will definitely be visiting the museum the next time I am in Portsmouth. Talking of Portsmouth were you there for the America’s Cup? Bathed in glorious sunshine, in contrast to last year, the atmosphere was incredible. Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR staked their intent from the start, winning two of Friday’s practice day races. The team went on to win three out of the six official races. In a nail-biting final race, it was a close call between the home team and Oracle Team USA to take the title. Sir Ben’s boys came through, with help from the superb crowd, to be victorious. Read the report on page 20. Although they loved the racing and Race Village, the highlight of the America’s Cup weekend for my children was a high-five from Sir Ben himself (I would have been pretty happy with that too). If you completed the All at Sea Brexit boating survey you can read the results on this page. Keep sending in your comments and thoughts as this is one story that is going to run and run as the impact of Brexit – good and bad – becomes more apparent. Have a wonderful summer and see you in September for the Southampton Boat Show. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

CLIPPER REACHES ITS CLIMAX IT was a close battle in the final Clipper Race ocean crossing. Following an incredibly closely fought bout across the North Atlantic, LMAX Exchange beat Derry~Londonderry~Doire into its Northern Irish host port by just 33 minutes to complete the 3,624nm LegenDerry Finale from New York, the final ocean crossing of the Clipper 2015-16 Race. The two teams duelled constantly for the lead throughout the 16 day race, which was a particularly fast crossing partly aided by the Gulf Stream in the

early stages, and it was the home team which led for most of it. The fleet stayed in Northern Ireland before departing for Race 13 of the 14 stage series, to Den Helder in the Netherlands. The podium after the Den Helder Northern Seas Challenge saw some new faces with Visit Seattle’s first win of the series, and second podium of the series, and PSP Logistics’ first podium finish. Visit Seattle’s skipper Huw Fernie said: “It was a great race. As we approached

YOUR VIEWS ON BREXIT MOST All at Sea readers who joined our post referendum survey said they voted to stay in the EU but they were evenly split over the long-term effects of Brexit. While not claiming to be representative of the boating community, our poll gave an interesting insight into the thoughts of some of the boating community. It was not a close vote. The result showed a 16 per cent margin choosing to stay in the EU. Interestingly, most of those who voted to leave do not believe Brexit will lead to boating becoming

more expensive and do not believe their boating lifestyle will be affected in the long-term. Unsurprisingly, those who wished to remain in the EU generally had the opposite view. The biggest split was over the cost of boating with 62 per cent believing boating will become more expensive and that Brexit will affect future buying decisions. Overall, though, the votes were evenly split about how successfully the marine industry will deal with the changes.

SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS “The changes to come will only make boating more expensive and less accessible in the UK. When all the most expensive equipment on a boat are imported, I do not know how you can take advantage of that.”

Significantly increased cost of living in UK impacting on affordability of boating.”

“Increased cost and difficulty in travelling to other countries. Possibly tourist taxes for non EU boats.”

“The used boat market will be UK only.”

“Difficulties with regulatory requirements with sailing in the EU.

“Putting up prices and using the vote as an excuse. I hope it is properly policed.”

Not everyone believes it will be bad for boating: “No concerns, as long as common sense prevails.”

the Pentland Firth I really did not think we would make it back to the front runners.” The fleet then departed from Den Helder on 28 July before arriving back in London two days later. After the epic 40,000 miles of ocean racing, the 12 teams competing in the world’s longest ocean race returned to St Katharine Docks to a spectacular welcome. Read next month’s All at Sea for a round-up of the final Clipper Race action. www.clipperroundtheworld.com

HOVERCRAFT PLAN TO LINK TWO CITIES HOVERTRAVEL has revealed it is in the early stages of discussions involving plans for a hovercraft commuter service linking Portsmouth and Southampton. However, we would ask people to use a little common sense and not to take risks while looking for Pokemon.”

be a huge boost for businesses who use the motorway as they would be able to get goods and services moved across the Solent far easier.” Although Donna believes the idea could benefit both cities, there are questions about the reliability of a hovercraft in all weather conditions and whether there would be an impact on recreational boaters in the Solent. Hovercraft managing director Neil Chapman said: “Hovertravel can confirm it is in discussions with various parties, regarding both the feasibility and the longevity of a route between Portsmouth and Southampton. These discussions are in the very early stages and Hovertravel looks forward to working with the local councils during these initial stages.” What do you think? Would you welcome this service? Sir Ben Ainslie said, “The Hovercraft was a revolution in sea travel and has become a real iconic British invention. It is great to see these two new innovative

vessels continue to show off the strength of the British marine industry right now. Whilst out training on our development boats, we often ‘fly by’ each other during their trips from the mainland to the Isle of Wight. In addition, since moving to the island recently, it is also an extremely fast and reliable way to travel.”

The trade show Seawork is worth around £100m a year to Southampton. But it is under threat from community groups unhappy that Mayflower Park is closed for several weeks in June – and it is also taken over by the Southampton Boat Show in September. The city council is hoping discussions will prevent a legal challenge about the event. If the campaigners win it could see Seawork – the largest event of its kind in Europe – end for good. Andrew Webster, chief executive of event organiser Mercator Media, said: “I am not sure there is an alternative venue.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED THE Maritime Volunteer Service is looking for members to help expand a new unit based in Southampton. If you have experience on the water (or even if you do not) the MVS would like to hear from you. Aiming to promote maritime education and skills, the MVS is a nationwide charity with units around

the UK coast that provide support to community events, harbour authorities and other maritime organisations. Training is provided and members will obtain RYA certification at substantially discounted rates. If you would like to help and be a part of the new Southampton unit contact mvssouthampton@gmail.com.

THIS year there will be a Newcomers Trophy at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. It follows the partnership between TNG Swiss Watches and Cowes Week Ltd and will be awarded to the boat with the best overall result during the event. While boats are welcome to enter for the whole week, or as many days as they choose, the last Saturday of Cowes Week has always been a popular sailing day for boat owners who have not raced before, or who worry about entering the cut and

thrust of the full Cowes Week series for the first time. As some of the IRC classes finish their series on the Friday, the last Saturday sees a slightly smaller number of entries, which makes it an ideal day for boat owners and crew to experience Cowes Week for the first time. With reduced fleet sizes and a more relaxed feel, new names are able to rise to the front of their respective fleets. To encourage first timers there is also a reduced entry fee of £40 for the day’s

racing, irrespective of boat size. Cowes Week has always welcomed first-timers and the team are on hand throughout the week to provide any additional support that crews racing for the first time might need. There is also a First Timers Guide on the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week website. This year’s event takes place from 6 13 August. www.aamcowesweek.co.uk Turn to page 26 to read All at Sea’s Cowes Week preview guide.

Next year’s Volvo Ocean Race is set to be the toughest yet. tough, intense, and featuring almost three times as much Southern Ocean sailing as the previous edition, the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 will be contested over the longest distance in race history at around 45,000nm, crossing four oceans and taking in 11 major cities on five continents. But while the teams will sail more nautical miles than ever before, the race itself is scheduled to be one month shorter than in most of the last 12 editions. the 43-year-old race around the world – the ultimate

ocean marathon, pitting the sport’s best sailors against each other across the world’s toughest oceans – will start from Alicante in late 2017 with a 700nm sprint to Lisbon, Portugal that will provide the first test of the form guide. the event will include a stop at Cardiff, taking the race back to the UK for the first time since 2005-06. the UK is the birthplace of the Whitbread Round the World Race, which had its first start from Portsmouth in 1973 and became the Volvo Ocean Race in 1998. www.volvooceanrace.com

the ellen MacArthur Cancer trust has announced the purchase of their first yacht based in Scotland, thanks to the People’s Postcode Lottery. In January the trust received £200,000 from players of People’s Postcode Lottery to invest into a yacht to improve their operations at their newest base in Largs, Scotland, which opened in early 2013. this will allow the trust to better support young people from the North of england and Scotland with mobility issues resulting from their cancer treatment. the successful Largs base is now in its third summer of operations, however, so far the trips have been run using chartered vessels which has limited the trust’s flexibility and has an ongoing cost. Clara Govier, head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “Players have now raised an amazing £750,000 for ellen MacArthur Cancer trust since 2013 to help this fantastic charity deliver their work.” After careful consideration and advice and support from Ancasta, a Beneteau Oceanis 45 was selected as the most suitable yacht for the trust’s needs. this was due to specific design features of this yacht such as a stern which lowers to pontoon level and its steady cruising capabilities, ideal for young people whose mobility has suffered as a result of their cancer. the newly purchased Beneteau has now made its way to hamble, on the south coast, where hamble Yachts Services Refit & Repair will further adapt the boat to suit the young people’s disabilities. After key modifications such as the fitting of extra handrails and altering the cabin space to make a more accessible social area the yacht will be ready to join the trust trips starting in spring 2017. www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org

FIREFLY PRO

WHAT KNOT

If you are reviewing your safety equipment here is a piece of kit worth consideration. Available in two versions for manual or water-activated operation, the SOLAS-approved Firefly PRO strobe lights use wide light emission LEDs to produce a 360 degree beam of light that is more than 41 candelas bright, allowing for visibility of over 3.5 miles. The Firefly fits easily inside an inflatable lifejacket or pocket and also has two lashing loops and a Velcro strap for attachment to a jacket, belt or pack for easy accessibility. It has a durable casing to withstand the harshest environments and is waterproof tested to 10m. PRO SOLAS: £42.95 WaterBug: £49.95 www.acrartex.com

Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year, many of them victims of the thousands of plastic objects that get washed up at sea. What Knot, which can tie and unfasten almost any rope with a thickness between 3mm to 15mm, can help reduce this number. Rope is often made of cheap, disposable plastic. When used on a boat, it gets wet and difficult to untie and sometimes users will simply cut it and let it go. What Knot can be used at any point along the length of good quality rope, connecting and disconnecting in just six seconds. It is completely waterproof, so will never rust or rot. Turn to page 40 to read this month’s Green Blue report. £7.99 www.whatknot.co.uk / Screwfix.com

Four years after hosting the world’s greatest sporting event, this month Team GB will be heading to Rio de Janeiro for the Summer Olympics. The sailing team is hoping to continue the enormous successes they have achieved at previous Games.

ailing was supposed to make its Olympic debut at Athens 1896, but due to bad weather it was postponed until Paris 1900. Now one of the most celebrated Olympic sports, in Rio there will be five men’s, four women’s and one mixed event. the Sailing Competition in Rio will feature 380 athletes competing across the 10 events and will take place on Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay. to prepare for the sailing the marina has undergone a structural refit that includes a new roof, event areas and a temporary pier for spectators. While the first group of GB sailors heading to Rio was announced almost a year ago in September 2015, the

final four sailors who will take to the water for team GB were announced this spring. they completed the 15-strong sailing line-up that will head to Brazil. Stephen Park, team GB Sailing team leader and RYA Olympic Manager, said: “Finalising the Games team is always an exciting moment and allows us to now really focus on the final run-in and what it takes to win medals in the extremely challenging environment that Rio presents.” Racing is set to start on 8 August with the Men’s and Women’s RS:X sailing on the Pão de Açucar race track. the laser and laser Radial fleets will also commence their competition on escola Naval course on the same day. For the Olympic classes a regatta consists of a 10 race series (15 for the 49er class), where all boats take to the same startline. Unlike other sports, sailors can start anywhere on the line, which means sailors continually jostle for the best position determined by the course, the wind direction and the fleet. this leads to very intense moments during the timed countdown to the start. Course length and shape varies according to the type of boat racing and the wind speed. Sailors discard their worst race result and after the initial 10 (15) races, the top 10 boats in each class move on to a final required and non-discardable Medal Race. the first of these will take place on 14 August with two per day scheduled until 18 August when the 49er and 49erFX will bring the regatta to a close.

CLASSES

Since the 2012 Games the following class changes have taken place: n Women’s (elliott 6m) and men’s (Star) keelboat events have been removed. n Multi-hulls return, represented by the Nacra 17. n Women’s skiff has been added, represented by the 49erFX. these new classes, along with the others already featuring, have already been confirmed for tokyo 2020. Paralympic sailing classes will not feature in the 2020 Olympic Games. With the two changes to sailing classes there will be a total of 10 events at Rio 2016.

The hull is fiberglass with integral buoyancy tanks. The 470 is equipped with spinnaker and trapeze, making teamwork necessary to sail it well. It has a large sail-area-to-weight ratio and is designed to plane easily. It has been an Olympic class since first featuring at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. In 1988 the first Olympic women’s sailing event was sailed in the 470.

49er: The 49er is a two-handed skiff-type highperformance sailing dinghy. The two crew work on different roles with the helm making many tactical decisions, as well as steering, and the crew doing most of the sail control. Both of the crew are equipped with their own trapeze and sailing is handled while ‘flying’. The boat was selected by the International Sailing Federation after a series of trials for a high performance two person skiff and has been in every Olympics since its debut in the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

I know Sophie and I will be doing all we can to play our part in that.” Read All At Sea’s interviews with Sophie in December 2015 and Charlotte in April 2016: http:// bit.ly/AASSophieAinsworth and http://bit.ly/ AASCharlotteDobson 49erFX: Mackay Boats developed the new FX rig for the 49er. Starting with the 49er hull, wings and foils, the goal was all about designing a rig that would go straight into the existing 49er boats and provide the correct amount of power for the lighter crew target weight specified by ISAF. The FX is a true high performance skiff and demands athleticism, balance and skill.

Finn: A one-person, single sail dinghy that has been part of the Olympic Games since 1952. The Finn is an intensely tactical boat in which the top 10 places are often seconds apart after several hours racing and the fact that the boat is powerful means that it requires a true athlete to get the most out of it. In strong winds the boat rewards those who are fit and able to discipline themselves to perform the exhausting task of driving the boat full out while managing the tactical and psychological aspects of the race.

Every item in the rig must conform to rigorous one design specifications leaving no room for technical gains. This places every emphasis on the fitness and tactical awareness of the helm. the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow will travel round the country during Medal Race week to venues that have a special connection with our medal contenders. Members of the public are welcome to join each event, with free sailing sessions and off-the-water activities for those inspired by the sailors’ endeavours. Duncan truswell, RYA Sport Development Manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to partner with these venues to support our athletes as they go for gold in Rio. “each of these events will be a fantastic opportunity, not only to get afloat, but also to spectate and hopefully celebrate with the team’s friends, family, sailing club members and volunteers who have supported the sailors through the years. I am sure that it will be a fantastic summer of sailing and hopefully the team, and the opportunities we provide, will inspire people to find out why sailing is so much fun.” www.rya.org.uk/roadshow

Overall ranking positions in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series determine the starting points score of the teams in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers in 2017. The event culminates in the 35th America’s Cup Match in 2017 in Bermuda, where the top challenger will face the defending champions, Oracle Team USA.

Huge crowds gathered in Portsmouth to watch Land Rover BAR’s big win in the challenge to bring the America’s Cup home to Britain. The second victory in Portsmouth followed on from the home team’s success on home waters in 2015, and their second event win in Oman in February.

T

he America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth began with Friday’s practice day. the crowds were out in force to watch the six elite sailing teams taking part in the practice races just metres away from them on the Solent. As an indicator of what was to come, land Rover BAR was triumphant in the first two races delivering on Sir Ben’s earlier promise to “put on a good show” for the home crowds. Paul ‘CJ’ Campbell-James, Wing trimmer for the team, said: “We had a great day. Ben is absolutely on fire, The Duchess of Cambride with the Duke by her side cheered on the teams. Image: Lloyd Images

he has obviously got ‘Dad Power’ and we are keeping up.” this was a timely reference to Sir Ben Ainslie and his wife Georgie welcoming their baby daughter, Bellatrix, just days before the Portsmouth event. land Rover BAR also had a visit from HRH the Duke of edinburgh. Prince Phillip toured their base and met personnel from land Rover BAR along with Sir Keith Mills, Chairman of teAMORIGIN, organisers of the louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth. the Duke then headed out on to the water to meet Sir Ben and the team.

GREAT START FOR BEN the first official day of racing at the louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth saw huge crowds watching the action on the water as Sir Ben Ainslie’s team land Rover BAR won two out of the three races in the fabulous summer sunshine. Speaking before the three official races began, Sir Ben said: “Other than actually winning the America’s Cup, this is by far and away the biggest deal for us. Winning last year in front of these guys was incredible for all of us. that is why we compete; we want to do it in front of our home crowd. It looks like great racing and we are going for it!” In light winds ranging from 6 - 8 knots, getting off the starting line clear was critical. land Rover BAR, however, did not get the start they had hoped for in the first race with a photo finish seeing them placed in fifth position by mere inches. Sir Ben said: “It was very tight racing in quite light and difficult winds. We got caught out in the first race. We

were in a strong position and then got stuck with Japan and both of us sailed ourselves to the back of the fleet from second and third which was really frustrating.” It was as if the disappointing start gave the team an extra push as they went on to win both races two and three to huge cheers from the home crowds with a sea of Union Jack flags on ‘Ben’s beach’ in Southsea. the second race saw five of the six boats early on the line as everyone again struggled with their timing. the fleet reshuffled to lose the penalties, and land Rover BAR sailed a superb second leg to take a lead that they built on all the way to the finish. It was a brilliant tactical move on leg three that put them into the lead in the third race, and once in front they delivered all the way to the line. land Rover BAR’s Paul ‘CJ’ CampbellJames said: “It is absolutely amazing looking towards the shore and seeing that many Union Jacks and hearing the cheers! It really pumps us up and we end pulling the ropes a bit harder and turning the drums a bit faster.”

SUPER SUNDAY

the last day of racing, Super Sunday, meant double points for all three races and so although land Rover BAR started the day at the top of the table on joint points with Groupama team France, there was still everything to sail for. the teams were met with a rapturous reception when they arrived on the Main Stage ahead of the racing, and the home team looked confident knowing the conditions for racing were fantastic. However their competitors were in no mood to make it easy for Ainslie’s men. After a brilliant start, the first race of the day was an easy victory for Sir Ben and his team. Oracle team USA, though, were not going to let land Rover BAR get away so well in the next race and quickly got themselves into an unbeatable lead with Sir Ben’s team

“The ultimate goal is to bring the America’s Cup back here. It is going to be a great event in Bermuda next year and we will be giving it everything.” having a fight on their hands to get from fifth to second place, cheered on by the crowds. After the dominant performances by the home team and Oracle team USA, the third and final race was always going to be a tense and closely fought affair. there was some initial confusion during the race as to where land Rover BAR needed to finish in order to win the Series. Commentators informed the crowd that land Rover BAR just had to finish ahead of Oracle team USA. As the Americans took a decisive lead all seemed lost, but then a huge roar from the crowd followed the announcement that the sums were wrong and the home team could finish in second and win the event. It certainly added to the drama of the race, but land Rover BAR still had to

battle to retain second which, of course, they did. Nick Hutton, trimmer, said: “today was great, it was awesome to win at home, it is obviously the key event of our year. It is so nice to be here with all these people on our home pitch “It is great to get it done and put on a good show after last year. In the big picture we have taken the lead in the World Series, for us as a new team it is fantastic to go up against the established teams and win, great moving forward into the future.”

ROYAL CELEBRATIONS

the crowds loved the action on the water and with the home team being victorious again land Rover BAR certainly proved they ruled the waves. On Sunday afternoon, after the racing, the teams took to the Main Stage. this

time the teams were greeted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who presented the Victory trophies. On stage, in front of the cheering crowds, Sir Ben said: “It is a great result in front of the home crowd. It is amazing for Portsmouth to have these events [in 2015 and 2016]. “the ultimate goal is to bring the America’s Cup back here. It is going to be a great event in Bermuda next year and we will be giving it everything.” throughout the weekend action continued off the water with the public enjoying the many activities in the Race Village. Highlights included the chance to see the AC45F catamaran used by the teams on display in the tech Zone, the Royal Navy climbing wall and BMW Blokart land yachts. Up in the sky, over the three days, spectators watched the Red Arrows,

Blades aerobatic team and the Red Bull Matadors. All three wowed the crowds with their spectacular and daring manoeuvres high up in the sky. the America’s Cup World Series action now moves on to toulon, France from 10 - 11 September. this will be followed by an event in Fukuoka, Japan in November before the final of the America’s Cup in Bermuda next year. the All at Sea website and Facebook page has more event photos and videos. www.allatsea.co.uk facebook.com/allatseanewspaper LandRoverBAR.com www.americascup.com @BenAinslieRacin @AmericasCup #BringTheCupHome

CHURCHILL’S NAVY

SPLICING MODERN ROPES A Practical Handbook By Jan-Willem Polman £20 Hardback / eBook £19.99 For any seafarer splicing rope is an essential skill. While a knot can reduce the strength of a rope by as much as 50 per cent, a well-spliced rope loses only five to ten per cent. However the traditional three-strand rope is fast disappearing. So how do you splice braided rope? This is the definitive guide to this crucial skill. See why splices are better – and stronger – than knots or shackles for joining or shortening rope, and follow the step-by-step photographs and clear instructions to find out how to splice efficiently.

The Ships, Men and Organisation, 1939-1945 By Brian Lavery Paperback £25 and eBook, £21.99

In this book, now reissued in paperback, Brian Lavery examines every aspect of the Royal Navy, both ashore and at sea, during the Second World War. Brian casts his eye over the strengths and weaknesses of an organisation that was put under acute strain during the period, yet rose to the challenge with initiative and determination. Divided into 12 sections, the book delves into the structure of naval power from the Board of Admiralty and shore commands to officers and crews, their recruitment and training, daily life and discipline. The text is complemented by over 300 illustrations and the personal accounts of those who served.

Boykoff, a former member of the US Olympic soccer team, takes readers from the nineteenth-century origins of the modern Games, through its flirtations with Fascism and into the contemporary era of corporate control. ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2016

EXPERTS’ FORUM

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

BUYING A BOAT AT THE SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW? STUART AUSTIN, MD OF PROMARINE FINANCE, LOOKS AT FINANCE OPTIONS.

THE dream of boat ownership or upgrading your existing boat need not be that far away. This could be a motorboat with a cuddy or an extra berth, changing from a day boat to a coastal vessel or even upgrading the outboard and trailer. Maybe you just want to scale up the size of your current boat. PERSONAL LOANS Taking out a personal loan is one option, but it is important to do your research and ask the right questions. Find out precisely who you are dealing with and whether they are a broker or a lender. Check what fees are payable and when and if their quote is realistic or there is a sliding scale according to the credit rating. Can you speak to a decision maker and do they understand what you want?

FINANCE Since several bank owned marine finance subsidiaries closed their doors for new business prior to 2010 there are three main lenders remaining in the market. Each has similar criteria and want to lend on larger boats. Ideally, minimum borrowing starts at £50k. They will lend at low rates and over 10 year periods. The downsides are longwinded application processes and strict lending criteria for yourself and also your boat. There may be little flexibility.

The boat will need to be surveyed unless new, will need to be Part 1 Registered with the MCA and have ‘bills of sale’ history for at least five years. NEW MARINE LENDERS Over the past 12 months a couple of new marine lenders have appeared in the market place. Be cautious and clarify what they are offering as recommended for the personal loan option. Speak to the underwriter and understand what they want to see from you

so you can make a decision as to whether to invest time with that lender or move on. Ascertain what they do if you miss a payment for whatever reason. You will probably need a survey and ‘bills of sale’ history. As managing director I have to declare an interest but, as a lender in the market since 2010 Promarine Finance looks for a ‘decent’ credit payment history, affordability and needs to understand why you want the boat you are considering. The type, size and condition of the boat also need to be acceptable. SETTING A BUDGET A good rule to follow is borrow the least amount of money you need over the shortest period. Decide on what boating you want to do and why. Try to be clear on this because it will save you changing the boat if you get it wrong. Some lenders will allow you to settle and change the boat and help you but others may not and could charge penalties to do this. Think about how much can you justify

REMORTGAGING YOUR HOUSE Remember your house is at risk with this option. You will probably need a survey and incur other lender fees. It can be a slow process and may impact on your life more than you wish. It is an option worthy of consideration for more expensive boats if you have lots of equity in your home and are comfortable with the idea of your house being at risk.

spending on your boat each month and remember you will probably need to pay mooring fees, insurance, repairs and upgrades too. Once you have established the monthly figure, find out how much this will allow you to borrow. The Promarine Finance website has an online calculator: http://www.marine-finance.org/calculateapply.php. For example if you decide £393pm is your affordable budget, you can work out that you can borrow £20k over 10 years or £10,500 over three years. Taking this on a step, if you have £10k cash or a £10k part-exchange boat, this means you can consider a £30k boat over 10 years or a £20k boat over three years. Do your homework. Choose a company that best suits your needs and whom you feel comfortable with as you will be in a relationship with the lender and it is important you get on. Do not just rely on email and web applications. Pick the phone up and talk to a real person and start to build that allimportant relationship. www.marine-finance.org

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A with Wendy Stowe, 42, one of Britain’s first female harbour masters. WHAT IS YOUR BOATING BACKGROUND?

I have been yacht racing for the last 20 years and have been lucky enough to own my own boat for 15 of those. Professionally, I started as a seasonal coxswain patrol officer during the summers while I was still at university, studying Maritime Leisure Management at Southampton. I then took a full-time role as the Assistant Harbour Master on the River Hamble, where I worked my way up to Deputy Harbour Master. I recently completed the UK Harbour Masters’ Association’s Harbour Master Certificate.

TELL US ABOUT BEAULIEU RIVER AND HOW IT IS DIFFERENT TO YOUR PREVIOUS ROLE AS DEPUTY HARBOUR MASTER?

What makes the Beaulieu River unique is that it is one of the few privately owned estuaries in the world, whereas the River Hamble is governed by the council. So the two are very different. It is the Beaulieu River’s custodianship over four centuries by the forebears of Lord Montagu that has kept it unspoilt, rich in wildlife and controlled the riverside development and the number of moorings at Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour.

25

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST AT BEAULIEU? Working in this beautiful and unique environment and becoming part of the community on the Beaulieu River. I feel privileged to live and work in such a stunning location and to manage such a special river.

TELL US ABOUT THE ROLE’S BIGGEST CHALLENGES.

My first challenge has been to bring the Buckler’s Hard Boatyard under Beaulieu River management. My team will be running lift out and storage services at the boatyard in the future. We will also offer a choice of recommended high-quality suppliers who are known for their high standard of service to provide a full range of maintenance and repair services. My next challenge is to put the Beaulieu River on the map as an unmissable boating destination at the gateway to the New Forest National Park. The coast is the hidden gem of the New Forest, yet easily accessible by boat or car.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BOATING?

I love the freedom of being out on the water and the escape from the day-to-day pressures of life. From a racing point of view, I also enjoy the competitiveness – I do like to win – as well as working as part of a great team.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU?

I really admire the great achievements of sailors of the past. For example, Sir Francis Chichester who sailed from the Beaulieu River on his roundthe-world voyage 50 years ago this month. We are planning a celebration to mark that event at Buckler’s Hard with a visit from his boat the Gipsy Moth IV and his son Giles Chichester. I think what they achieved without today’s modern technology was amazing. Though today’s sailors, such as local lad Ben Ainslie and Ellen MacArthur, have equally incredible stories to inspire others.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW JOB AT BEAULIEU RIVER. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ONE OF BRITAIN’S FIRST FEMALE HARBOUR MASTERS? I feel proud of myself. It has been hard work getting here. I have also noticed that it is helping to inspire teenage girls to consider this as a career. Some have got in touch to ask for advice and to say that they would like to consider it for their future. The industry has changed a lot in the last 10 years and I feel that I have been accepted in what used to be a maledominated industry.

CoWES WEEK

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is one of the UK’s longest running and most successful sporting events and is a highlight of the sporting summer.

C

owes Week, which is looking to secure a new title sponsor for 2017 and beyond, has evolved enormously since it began in 1826 and now has between 800 and 1,000 boats competing in up to 40 different classes. A regular fixture on the boating calendar, it has been held in early August every year since 1826, apart from during the two world wars. An incredible 8,000 competitors will be arriving in Cowes to participate, some of them professional yachtsmen and others weekend sailors, and that is not counting the 100,000 visitors for what is, without doubt, one of the highlights of the British social and

sporting calendar. Over the years the event has attracted British and foreign royalty, not to mention many famous faces. As the event fast approaches its 200th anniversary, it is interesting to reflect on its humble beginnings. the first race was for a Gold Cup worth, a not insignificant for the time, £100. Rather than the hundreds of boats we see today there were just seven yachts under the flag of the Royal Yacht Club (which became the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1833). In 1827 King George IV showed his approval of the event by presenting a cup to mark the occasion, and the event became known as Cowes Regatta. the King’s Cup was used until 1939.

Now in its tenth year, ladies Day at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week will take place on 9 August. there will be a series of celebrations culminating in the presentation of the ladies Day trophy at an evening reception. ladies Day champions the role of women in sailing and celebrates both female achievement and participation in the sport. last year libby Greenhalgh, navigator with Volvo Ocean Race team SCA and meteorologist for the British Sailing team, was the winner of the trophy in recognition of her incredible achievements. Of the 8,000 competitors taking part in the regatta around a third are female. Sailing is one of the few mainstream sporting events where men and women can compete on equal terms, and the strength of female competitors has grown with a 150 per cent increase in female skippers over the last decade.

Perhaps surprisingly, it is only in Sea View Mermaids, Solent Sunbeams, recent times that Cowes Week has Swallows, Victories and X-onebecome the event in a format we designs. Cowes Week uses two rating systems: IRC and ISCRS. Both systems provide good, competitive racing for boat designs that are not sufficiently common to have their own onedesign class.

“it is wonderful to see that several classes that raced more than 50 years ago are still competing.” every year some boats get penalised unnecessarily because they go through restricted areas. therefore it is just as important for race regulars as newcomers to read the Sailing Instructions thoroughly as changes are made each year. Within minutes of crossing the finish line, competitors can see where they have finished in relation to other boats in their class and, in the handicapped fleets, whether anyone still racing can beat them on corrected time. this information is available on the event website, on eventtV screens, from the Regatta Centre and on Cowes Radio.

COWEs RaDiO 87.7FM Cowes Radio provide commentary, quasi-official information on courses, updates on racing, plus interviews and so on. Competitors generally find this a great source of information. Cowes Radio is also broadcast on the public announcement system along the Green and Cowes Parade.

the race spectators can watch a great deal of the racing from the shore, and there are opportunities to get afloat too. the Green and the Parade are popular spots to view the action, and for those wanting to watch from the water there are a number of spectator boat options offering trips to watch the racing action up close. During the event spectator boats will take people on hour-long trips from trinity landing on Cowes Parade. each trip costs £12.50 for an adult and £8 for a child.

There are many places to view the action shoreside. Image: Rick Tomlinson

In addition, RIB rides will give those after an exhilarating ride a 60 minute blast across the Solent. each trip costs £35 for an adult and £25 for a child.

ON sHORE

For both competitors and visitors Cowes has great shoreside facilities with plenty of pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes to choose from. In fact the atmosphere is carnival-like with openair activities and street entertainment. there is even a firework display on the Friday evening - watched by tens of thousands of people from the shore and from hundreds of boats off the Parade Spectators can watch the action from the Royal Yacht Squadron during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes. and sea front. Before the display the RAF typhoon will perform at speeds of up to 690mph. Cowes Parade, Cowes Yacht Haven, east Cowes Marina and Shepards Wharf Marina also provide entertainment, food and bars as well as berthing. Other Cowes Week dates for your diary include Family Day on 7 August followed by ladies Day on 9 August. the Artemis Challenge 50 mile sprint around the Isle of Wight sets off at 10:00 from the Royal Yacht Squadron on 11 August with the Red Arrows display team performing that evening. throughout the Week UKSA will be running sailing taster sessions between for a nominal donation, and an outdoor cinema will be screening

fter 2012 a lot of people said to me “It does not get any better than this, does it?” A home Games and a gold medal – and they are absolutely right. But what drives me and inspires me to carry on and compete in Rio is the chance of winning another gold medal and defending my title, which at the moment is something no Paralympic sailor in the 2.4mR class has managed to do. For London we felt it all came together just at the right time, but there was still a lot more that we could do. We felt that we were not finished yet and there was more to come. Rio was another realistic gold medal opportunity. And now here we are, about to embark upon the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. I think we have to accept that Rio is going to be very different and there will not necessarily be that huge support system that we felt with London. Obviously everyone will be watching back home,

FOLLOWING The BRITIsh TeaM ON The ROad TO RIO

ahead of the Paralympic Games, 2012 Paralympic gold medallist helena Lucas is attempting to write another place in the record books. but when we are there and competing it will not be the same. We are prepared for that and can accept that, and we are ready for the tricky conditions that Rio can bring. We have a great and experienced team competing at the Paralympics and each one of the three boats has a great shot at the podium spots. hIGh sTaNdaRds The standard of my class, the 2.4mR class, has always been high, but I think it has got even higher. It is now quite easy to make a couple of mistakes and find yourself back in eighth or ninth whereas in the past you could get away with making a couple of mistakes and still be fourth or fifth. From the results at the 2016 Worlds I think you could tell people were experiencing that. I am really pleased with my kit right now and I think in most conditions I have got some really good speed, which is very useful and gets me out of

trouble a few times. I also think I have the determination and attitude of never giving up. Every single point counts, and every boat you can pass counts. I think that was certainly my attitude for London 2012 and is what enabled me to win gold. Focusing on taking one place at a time and working my way up through the fleet will be important in Rio as well. MY RIVaLs In terms of my rivals, Heiko Kroeger and Damien Seguin have been on the scene for longer than I have and have always been up there competing for the medals. Matt Bugg, the Australian, is certainly somebody we need to keep an eye out for. He has put in a really good performance over the last year or so, and Bjornar Erikstad from Norway is also someone to keep an eye on. He is a fantastic sailor. Damien and Heiko are the usual two suspects that you always see at the top

of the leaderboard, but Matt and Bjornar are more than capable of getting into the mix. LasT ChaNCe When I won my gold medal in London and was standing on the podium I think the first emotion was one of relief. Years and years of hard work go into it and finally you have achieved it. It took ages for it to sink in and it sort of felt like somebody else had won it. Hopefully if I have the opportunity to stand on the top step again in Rio, having won it once before, it will feel quite

different. It would be a very emotional moment for sure, especially as this is the last chance for Paralympic sailing to win medals until at least 2024. It is certainly my last chance of winning a medal so I will be doing all I can. They may not be racing offshore as much these days, but the yachts racing in the Half Ton Classic Cup this month will still enjoy some intense racing.

HALF CUP, FULLY CLASSiC Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.

Despite the half ton yachts being very different to each other, the racing is amazingly close. Image: Fiona Brown Communications

W

ith the exception of the high-pressure series for elite classes such as the TP52 and Fast 40+, much of the yacht racing takes places today in ‘cruiser racers’, where boats can just as easily cruise across the channel as race around the buoys in the Solent. Designs have stabilised and with the excellence of modern build techniques, owners can be confident that their investment in a new yacht will stand them in good stead for a satisfyingly extended period. However, back in the so-called ‘golden era’ from the late 1960s through the 1980s, the situation was far more fluid. These were the years when the Offshore Racing Council ruled yacht racing, with yachts being designed to the International Offshore Rule.

OFFSHORE YACHTS The intention of the ORC was that their rating rules would help promote the development of seaworthy offshore yachts. This focus on the offshore capabilities was reflected in the demands that any racing for the top events would consist of a mix of inshore round the cans racing and offshore events. The yachts themselves would be categorised by their rated length into classes, which could then race on an effective ‘level rating’, with the winner being the first boat across the finishing line. The demands for success in this increasingly popular form of racing would see designers examining the fine print of the IOR, as they sought to get more and more of an advantage by exploiting loopholes in the Rule.

Yachts became shorter but beamier, with pinched in sterns and ‘bumps’ – hull deformations at the measurement points. With huge masthead genoas and small mainsails the boats were quick upwind, but getting downwind was another matter. In anything of a breeze the combination of the distorted hull form with an unbalanced rig, plus a large masthead spinnaker, often flown alongside a ‘blooper’ (a secondary spinnaker that could be flown at the same time as the main spinnaker) meant that it did not have to be windy for the offwind legs to be ‘white knuckle’ affairs that were characterised by wild broaches. HALF TON YACHTS One of the most popular of the IOR classes was the ‘Half Ton’ division, which accommodated yachts around 30ft overall. From the first running of the Half Ton Cup at La Rochelle in 1967 until the final competition for the class at Bayona in 1993, the racing would see many of the top names from yachting taking part in the intense racing the boats offered. However, the writing was on the wall for the International Offshore

Rule as a global recession saw a marked reduction in the number of owners prepared to take a speculative risk on a yacht design. Eventually the IOR would be replaced by newer rating systems that have helped develop yachts that are far more pleasant and rewarding to sail. Uncompetitive and often unloved, that should have been the end of the story for the Half Ton yachts had it not been for a meeting at Cork Week in 2000, where the idea of getting some of the old classic Half Ton yachts together for some racing was first mooted. With the yachts having been very popular in France, Ireland and the UK, it made sense for the racing to take place at one of these venues. A measure of just how popular this revivalist style of racing would be was seen when 24 boats came to the start line of the first ‘classic’ Half Ton Cup at Nieuwpoort in Belgium during 2003. By the time the Half Ton Cup came to Cowes in 2011 the fleet had grown to 38. FALMOUTH HOSTS THE CUP Certainly a bumper fleet is expected in Falmouth in August for the 2016 Half Ton Classic Cup, which has Henri Lloyd as headline sponsor. Although a number

of these yachts will be more than 30 years old, many of them will have undergone not just major refits but upgrades of hull, rig and deck systems. Unlike the ‘old’ days of the Half Ton Cup, the yachts are not expected to race offshore, though if the weather permits one of the round the cans races may be substituted with a coastal race that will give the fleet something of a change in the scenery. Falmouth is already home to a healthy fleet of Half Ton yachts comprising both the one off race yachts and production versions and they are confidently expecting a large contingent of international visitors to the event. With the waters of Falmouth offering one of the best and most scenic areas for yacht racing anywhere, the eye catching Half Ton fleet will make for a real spectacle. All at Sea wish the organisers and competitors well for this fantastic week and will report again on the events that take place. 15 - 19 August Henri Lloyd Half Ton Classic Cup Falmouth www.halftonclass.co.uk Blasting downwind is now a pleasure in the re-rigged half ton yachts. From the principle of naval warfare that a fight begun on the open seas can be carried into neutral waters if the enemy tries to escape; it was known then as hot chase. The most quoted example in naval history occurred in 1759 when Admiral Boscowen’s fleet destroyed three French ships in Lagos Bay. The Portuguese, whose territory this was, accepted the principle and the intrusion as they were unfriendly towards the French.

Since Brexit PlainSailing.com have reported that the number of people searching to book or hire a yacht in the UK has increased three-fold, and bookings have tripled. Conversely, interest in chartering yachts abroad has plummeted as people adopt a ‘wait and see’ strategy. Searches for Croatian and Greek yachts fell by 33 per cent and bookings are down by 40 per cent (Greek island bookings were already down somewhat on the previous year). Adi Togs, Manager of PlainSailing.com, said: “The uncertainty in the market means that our customers are sacrificing the sunshine this year, and turning their attention to sailing closer to home. The views and sailing are just as good – if not better – in the UK, but you do miss the sunshine.” www.PlainSailing.com

Over the four weeks the cruise goes even further off-piste visiting the likes of Amorgos, Astipalaia, Nisyros, Ikaria and Tinos, along with popular favourites Rhodes, Mykonos and Santorini before returning to Athens. In total over the 28 nights the cruise calls at 26 different islands. The yacht, the Sun Odyssey 52 with professional skipper and hostess, has four en-suite guest cabins. HOW TO SAIL FAST MARK ASQUITH, BRITISH SAILING TEAM PODIUM 49ERFX COACH

ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2016

THE Masterclass

If this month’s Olympic Games inspire you to improve your racing or take it up here are five essentials to follow. COURSE MADE GOOD

FOR any dinghy racer the question of how to sail fast has to repeat endlessly in your head. Picking the right area to focus on at various points around the course becomes key. Here is a go at simplifying it enough without removing the impact some basic approaches can make to your speed. For anyone who has done an RYA Learn to Sail course these famous five essentials will have been part of it. ■ Sail Setting ■ Balance ■ Trim ■ Centreboard ■ Course Made Good The order of priority for these changes depending where you are in the race, the wind and, importantly, the type of boat you sail.

Course Made Good is an interesting essential. Is it the product of getting the other four essentials correct? Thus you have made your course good. Or do you require your course to be good and know where you are going first to ensure you can set the other four essentials up correctly? Whichever way you choose to view it, ultimately you have to know where you are trying to get to before you can start pointing your boat in any direction and getting the best from it.

SAIL SETTING

It is just as important to look up frequently as it is to look around. Whatever type of boat you sail, it requires your sails to be set to the best angle to the breeze with the correct amount of controls (outhaul, downhaul and kicker) to make them most efficient. Sail setting is a huge area always open to discussion and endless variables. To keep it simple use your tell-tales on your jib, with your biggest focus on the lower to middle third ones. On the mainsail you can use both the luff and the leech tell-tales to help guide you. My preference is to use the leech tell-tales one-third down from the head of the mast, try to keep it streaming at least two-thirds of the

time. If it is not then play with controls to allow this to happen.

BALANCE

Flatter the better. Get it right and your boat should feel like it just wants to accelerate and go, accelerating in every gust. In the bigger scheme of boat balance you should be looking for a steady heel angle somewhere around dead upright. The biggest losses are when you rock from side to side during every gust and lull. With a steady, smooth boat you can then choose to sail with a degree or two of either windward or leeward heel depending on what the boat is telling you to do to give a neutral helm.

TRIM

In most conditions kissing the bow knuckle without a rooster tail and you have got it right. This is all about your fore and aft weight, to stop you digging the bow or dragging the stern. The lighter the wind the more you will want to dig the bow to help with waterline length and grip in the water. Avoid anything but smooth water coming out of your transom. In stronger winds you will want to move aft to stop a bow plough, or even a pitchpole. For skiffs we work on the knuckle of the bow just kissing the waves once we are up and trapezing at full speed.

Nick Thompson will be putting the five essentials to good use in Rio this month. Image: Jesús Renedo / Sailing Energy

CENTREBOARD

Keep it clean and smooth. Without this you are going to struggle on most points of sail. The closer to the wind you want to go the more you need. Close hauled you will need full board until you start getting over powered. Once you have depowered as much as possible on the rig and sails then you can start to lift the centreboard to help you more. Down the runs you can reduce the centreboard to a quarter

down. It helps to reduce the drag, which gives you the extra speed. In boats that should plane downwind then you can leave the board down to help create lift and speed. Skiffs, for example, would not change raise the board going down wind. Continuously cycling through these five rules really is enough to keep your boat going fast. Then your only challenge is putting it in the right place on the race course…

ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2016 Bart’s Bash - Weymouth and Portland Combined Clubs . Image: Martin Allen

BART’S BASH IS BACK In September sailors worldwide will take to the water to be part of the world’s largest sailing event, Bart’s Bash. By: Susie Nation-Grainger will be even more opportunities to get involved. It will also coincide with the end of the Rio 2016 Paralympics sailing event. Tim Anderton, Event Organiser, explained: “Since we launched Bart’s Bash in 2014 we have received lots of feedback from sailing clubs and organisations across the world saying they wish to take part, however they currently sail on Saturdays. We really hope that by making this a two day event we will allow even more people to take part, get inspired and help inspire many others.”

I

t is unbelievably now more than three years since Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson died in an America’s Cup training incident in San Francisco, but since then an astonishing amount of timehas gone into ensuring that not only does his memory not fade, but that his legacy shines bright. Now in its third year, Bart’s Bash sees hundreds of sailing venues across the globe, from sailing clubs to windsurfing groups, hosting a mass participation club race and raising funds for charity. Put simply, it is the day the world goes sailing. Organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, so far the event has seen more than 50,000 people taking part in 62 countries, and this year it has been extended across two days so there

BOOSTING DISABLED PARTICIPATION

Also, for the first time, the RYA and the ASSF will be working together with an aim to use this year’s Bart’s Bash to increase participation in the sport and raise funding and support for disabled sailing across the globe. RYA Sailability Manager Debbie Blachford said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to team up with Bart’s Bash and to be able to make a difference. This year we hope to encourage even more of our clubs, centres and Sailability sites to take part in the event and raise the awareness and profile of disabled sailing across the globe.” The RYA will work with the ASSF to award grants in four areas covering inclusive sailing, volunteer training, accessible equipment and performance sailing.

Debbie continued: “The money raised through Bart’s Bash will not only make it possible for more people who have a disability to get out on the water, but for people to continue to enjoy sailing on a regular basis.”

GRAFHAM WATER

Along with raising money, Bart’s Bash is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy racing together, regardless of their sailing experience, age or ability. Grafham Water Sailing Club in Cambridgeshire have been taking part in the event since the beginning in 2014 and last year they hosted a fun boat relay with nine teams going head to head.

“IT IS THE DAY THE WORLD GOES SAILING”

This year’s Bart’s Bash is working to support disabled sailing

Peter Saxton, Commodore of the sailing club, said: “For us it would be odd not to take part in such a fun and worldwide event. It gives us a good opportunity to help others whilst enjoying our own sport and to work with those who share our water including Graham Water Centre with

their younger RYA OnBoard sailors and Grafham Sailability. “It is important for us to be able to encourage everyone to take part so we add a special start for the less experienced racers. Last year for many youngsters it was their very first experience in a racing environment. “The atmosphere has been buzzing and we raised over £500, so this September we are hoping to have another successful event - there are lots of potential disabled sailors without the means or connections to get out on the water and we want to help them as well.”

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED Clubs across the UK are throwing their weight behind this year’s Bart’s Bash and there are now more than 400 clubs from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Austria ready to celebrate Bart’s life. If your sailing club is yet to sign up, there is no minimum number requirement and no paperwork. You just need to hold your normal club race, measure a course and submit your results. If you are a sailor who would like to join an existing event then you can find all participating clubs and more information about how to take part at www.bartsbash.com. Image: Nicola Evans

STIckING TO THE RULES You may have a experienced a powerboater pass too close at speed or come across a boater whose ignorance has led to a potentially dangerous situation. Incidents like these reinforce the fact that it is not only important to understand the rules of the road, but to follow them at all times on the water. Richard Falk, RYA Director of Training and Qualifications Yachtsmen sometimes complain that power craft pass them at speed and too close

form of dysfunction simply choosing to ignore them. At best this causes annoyance to others on the water, at worst it risks serious injury or worse through their selfish actions. Getting to know the rules of the road is not difficult. There are many good books written with useful diagrams and examples of situations in which you are likely to find yourself as a boater, regardless of the type of craft you may choose to use. Another important aspect of the rules of the road is the need to ensure you know the right rules. There are many urban myths around the rules of the road that seem to get passed from one boating generation to the next. A classic example of this is the widely (and incorrectly) held belief that a vessel that is racing has ‘rights’ over other water users who are not racing. This is not the case and has been the cause of many an irate interaction by sailors in crossing situations the world over.

FOLLOW THE RULES

Those who know the rules of the road but choose to either ignore them or push the boundaries to their limits do themselves and their fellow boaters no favours. A great example of this would be a sailing vessel tacking up a waterway outside of a shipping channel as a large commercial vessel constrained by draft makes its way up the channel. In reality as long as the sailing vessel remains clear of the channel it is completely within its rights to be there and there is no harm done. However, if that vessel is sailing right to the very edge of the channel and tacking at the last moment possible, whilst on an intercepting course with a 40,000 gt ship, the master of the ship has no way of knowing whether the sailing vessel has actually seen them, and so

is likely to give the sailors five blasts on the ships horn to ensure they know he is there and that he is unsure of the intentions of the yacht. In short, very few people on the water are blessed with the gift of being able to read minds. Therefore, there are times when taking early and clear actions may well make your life and those of others on the water more peaceful, rather than pressing home your ‘rights’ when it simply is not necessary.

PREVENTING MORE REGULATION

We are fortunate in this country to still be relatively unburdened in terms of regulation and legislation surrounding leisure boating. A great way of ensuring that situation is maintained is to try and act in a courteous fashion when afloat. Keeping clear of other craft, operating at speeds that do not create wash for other craft and generally just being sensible when interacting with other vessels (regardless of what type they may be) goes a long way towards helping everyone enjoy their time on the water a little more. Blood pressures are reduced, tempers controlled and, very importantly, safety is improved. It is much easier to argue against increased regulation when the boating public acts in a responsible and courteous fashion, rather than as a bunch of selfish hoons with no regard for others. So next time you are on the water try and think about what you are doing not just in terms of your own safety and enjoyment, but also in terms of how it impacts the other boaters around you. You might just find that you receive a grateful wave as you pass at low speed rather than an angry stream of abuse as you roar past at 25 knots upsetting lunch and throwing people around the cockpit of a boat at anchor. Speed notices are there for a reason

I

t seems that no matter who you talk to on the water, be they a sailor, an angler, a motor cruiser, a personal watercraft operator or even a kayaker, everyone has a gripe of one sort or another about another water user. Fishermen complain that yachtsmen use them as rounding marks whilst they are anchored and fishing. Motorcruisers complain about personal water craft users coming in too close and creating too much noise and wake in quiet anchorages. Yachtsmen complain that powerboaters pass them at speed and too close, creating unnecessary wash. Of

course everyone complains that no-one else knows “the rules”. And so it goes on.

ON THE ROAD

Generally speaking the road system works quite well in that motorists keep a safe and courteous distance and the majority of the time road users respect one another. The same tends to go for motorbike riders and cyclists. Of course the situation on the roads is somewhat different. Even though the roads are far more congested and operating at higher speeds, there is clear signage and, even more importantly, lines marked on the road provide drivers with some clear guidance as to where

they should or should not be going. In theory, those on the water should have a much simpler time of it given the lower speeds the majority of craft are operating at and the significantly smaller volumes of traffic. For some reason, however, it seems that many of us excel at winding up our fellow boaters on a regular basis.

RULES OF THE ROAD

For many this comes down to not knowing the “rules of the road” or International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea, whilst for others it is a case of knowing the rules but through arrogance or some other

We are fortunate to still be relatively unburdened in terms of regulation

GREEN FOCUS

STOP THE SPILL Are you an RYA instructor or training centre interested in adding value to your courses? The Green Blue now offers visits to train instructors in a new selection of fun, interactive and informative environmental and boating activities with intriguing names like Alien Tag and Stop the Spill.

Practising enviro games on the water with dinghy and Windsurfers in Scotland

Kate Fortnam, The Green Blue’s Environmental Outreach Officer

T

he Green Blue has been calling in at sailing clubs and centres across the UK providing free interactive training to RYA instructors in how to deliver a variety of on water and onshore activities in a fun and engaging way. The demand for training in these exciting new activity resources led to the start of my ventures around Wales and Scotland. My first port of call was South East Wales with a visit to the newly built Llandegfedd Sailing Club.

PLAYING ALIEN TAG

Greeted by eight instructors, the day’s training began with everyone getting into dinghies and kayaks to experience, first hand, The Green Blue’s five to 10 minute ‘on water’ games. These included Alien Tag, with a focus on stopping the spread of invasive species, Wildlife Escape to practise keeping a distance from wildlife and Stop the Spill, all about handling oil and fuel. Back on shore the instructors tried out some Plan B sessions (for when the weather

excited to see how the activities would add educational value and fun to their sessions, but would also get participants practising their boating knowledge and skills.

PLAN B NEEDED

Children in Wales looking at crabs and playing enviro games

does not allow time on the water) and warm-up games. Activities included Marine CSI, which gets participants to become detectives and solve four environmental boating incidents by undertaking water quality testing, fingerprint analysis and unscrambling puzzles. Other activities included Grab an Alien, Rig It Right and the Plunge. With typical instructor energy they fully immersed themselves in the training and were

From Llandegfedd my journey cross-country took me through the Welsh valleys to North West Wales to train instructors at Plas Menai Outdoor Activity Centre and Colwyn Bay Watersports. During my visit to Plas Menai a great opportunity arose. On arrival at the centre I discovered that a school group was scheduled to sail on the centre’s J80 yachts, but unfortunately, as many of us have experienced, there was no wind and a Plan B activity was needed at short notice. Alison Yates, Operations and Programme Manager, asked if I could set up and deliver Marine CSI and I jumped at the chance to demonstrate it. The students were instantly engaged and the teachers provided positive feedback saying the environmental topics covered by Marine CSI coincided perfectly with what they teach the

pupils at school – adding even more educational value to their residential sailing trip.

PASSING ON KNOWLEDGE

Following the success of the Welsh training sessions, I then made my way up to the South West of Scotland to Castle Semple Outdoor Activity Centre, Galloway Activity Centre and to the island of Cumbrae to train instructors at Scotland’s National Activity Centre. It was a real pleasure to meet so many enthusiastic RYA instructors keen to pass on environmental knowledge and best practice to students on their courses. Instructors are great role models for future sailors and I am looking forward to continuing training and exchanging ideas with even more instructors in the future. Lisa and Chris Rowe as they reflect on the best decision they ever made – buying their first 21ft motorboat seven years ago.

WAS IT A DIffICUlT CHOOSING BETWEEN A MOTORBOAT OR A yACHT? My dad had always been a sailor so I was brought up around everything ‘sailing’ but rag and stick boating was not for me. Motorboating always held much more appeal, so we ‘dipped our toes in the water’ with a small boat to see if we liked it. We did and have not looked back since. HOW DO yOU PREPARE fOR A CRUISE BEfOREHAND? We first and foremost make sure the boat is in perfect working order. We will usually have her lifted, scrubbed and serviced several weeks beforehand. We then get the charts out, plot the route and make sure we have a backup plan should the weather turn nasty.

WHAT ARE yOUR THOUGHTS ON PREMIER’S NEW MARINA? I am excited about Premier acquiring Noss Marina in Dartmouth because at the moment Falmouth is the only Premier owned marina westward. I hope there will be designated visitor berths so we can book in advance and take advantage of the freedom berthing scheme.

WHAT STEPS DOES THIS INClUDE? We draw up a checklist of things to have on-board. We make sure we have emergency procedures written down and close to hand. It is also important to monitor the weather; two days beforehand we make a final decision based on the latest forecast. Safety is everything and if the weather dictates we should delay departure or even cancel, then so be it. That is boating!

WHICH fIvE THINGS CAN yOU NOT DO WITHOUT ON BOARD? It would be more accurate to ask what five things I cannot do without as my husband needs no home comforts at all. However listed in priority these are our must haves: Wi-Fi connectivity, fridge (warm beer is a no-no), tea and coffee, earplugs (boy can my husband snore!) and a Dobby (do not ask).

A speedy cruiser-racer, ideal for a first step up into ‘big’ boats for family coastal cruising and the Channel or club racing. Six berths. Built in 1986, one owner since 1992. Lightly used but well maintained in recent years, raced only in Round the Island.

Lisa and Chris Rowe love taking longer trips in their 36ft Sealine SC35 motorboat

WHAT IS yOUR CRUISING SCHEDUlE fOR THIS yEAR? Now we have the Sealine we are able to go on much longer passages. We usually go on one long cruise a year and this summer we may venture cross channel for a change. However there is so much right on our doorstep and we never seem to tire of it. Swanwick is quite simply is a lovely marina to have as a base. The facilities are great and there are plenty of good dog friendly pubs and restaurants to visit. www.premiermarinas.com

MARINA FOCUS

ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2016

Chichester Marina Birdham, Chichester West Sussex PO20 7EJ 01243 512 731 www.premiermarinas.com chichester@premiermarinas.com @premiermarinasuk

CHICHESTER MARINA Set in the beauty of a natural harbour and picturesque countryside, Chichester is a wonderful marina with a modern boatyard and tranquil backdrop.

CHICHESTER Marina was one of the first marinas to be constructed in Britain, opening in the mid-1960s. It is one of the UK’s largest marinas offering 17 miles of amazing channels to explore by boat. However because the marina is immersed in stunning countryside and its buildings are architecturally low key, it has a marked air of peace and tranquillity. Family friendly and ideal for boaters of all abilities, the marina combines state-ofthe-art facilities with serene surroundings, making it a worthy recipient of the Yacht Harbour Association’s Five Gold Anchors Award. This award is the highest level attainable and is indicative of the high level of customer service and quality and range of facilities provided at Chichester Marina, which include luxury toilets and showers and a state-of-the-art boatyard.

A safe and secure locked marina, with 1,100 berths, two boat hoists, a slipway and spacious boatshed for storing boats up to 50ft, the marina is a peaceful haven with easy access to Chichester Harbour, East Head and the popular cruising grounds of the Solent. Arguably the prettiest marina in the south, eating out on the marina is good too with a Boat House Cafe that offers an excellent seasonal bistro menu served with amazing views out across the harbour and a thriving yacht club that opens its doors to visiting yachtsmen and berth holders alike. It is also a perfect cruising destination. The area offers wildlife and bird watching and lots of countryside walks. Alternatively simply soak up the ambiance whilst relaxing aboard a boat or in one of Chichester Marina’s new holiday apartments.

BERTHING & STORAGE

Chichester is the perfect location for both yachts and powerboats offering easy access to the Solent and beyond. The marina offers in-water berthing for 1,100 boats up to 22m (max beam 7m, 2.3 draft) and also Versadock and trailer sailer options for smaller craft including RIBs, small powerboats and motorboats up to 8m. The marina has competitively priced annual berthing contracts that can be paid on an annual or a monthly basis. Chichester’s experienced boatyard team provide year-round lift, high-pressure wash and block-off and re-launch services that include the use of two hoists - a 65 tonne hoist located on the south side of the marina, next to the boatyard complex and a 35 tonne hoist on the north side, a short distance from the marina’s slipway.

ACCESS

Approach by sea via west pole beacon – cross over Chichester Bar, which is located at the entrance to the harbour. Once inside the harbour you need to head north-east past East Head and towards Itchenor to arrive at the marina. Chichester Bar is located at the entrance to the harbour and is dredged to approximately 1.5m below

chart datum giving a depth of 2m at Mean Low Water Springs, however the bottom can vary up to 0.75m. With an ebb tide and strong southerly winds, it is advisable to exercise caution and cross the Bar between three hours before and one hour after high water springs. Vessels entering the marina should keep to the starboard side of the channel at a maximum speed of six knots. Unless requested to do so by the lock keeper, vessels must not overtake in the approach channel. Larger vessels may be given priority in exceptional circumstances. Alternatively you can call the marina ahead of your arrival on 01243 512731 or VHF channel 80. To Chichester by road, from the Chichester bypass (A27), take the A286 following signs for the Witterings. At the Stockbridge Roundabout take the second exit – A286 signposted Bracklesham, Witterings. After two miles turn right into Chichester Marina. Buses operate every 20 minutes between Chichester Bus station (South Street) and the Witterings. Also, fast trains run between London Victoria and Chichester. Gatwick airport is one hour 15 minutes from Chichester Marina by road. Private aircraft may land at Goodwood Aerodrome. This airfield is just five miles from the marina.

FACILITIES

to marine electronics, cosmetic work, valeting and engineering. There are also new and used boat sales and a wellstocked Marine Super Store chandlery. Chichester Marina also benefits from extensive storage ashore, coupled with Chichester onsite marine services - which make Chichester’s boatyard offering among the best on the South Coast for major boat repairs and routine maintenance. Chichester’s award winning facilities also include luxury toilets and showers, a Coastal and Outdoor Living clothing store and two on-site restaurants. The Boat House Cafe offers breakfast, lunch and a range of themed dining evenings and the thriving Chichester Yacht Club offers membership to Premier berth holders and welcomes visiting yachtsmen. It has an excellent bar and restaurant dining and an extensive cruising programme and plenty of yearround social events.

In April 2016 the nine luxury one and two-bedroom apartments, available yearround for weekend/mid-week breaks and long-term lets, were completed. The Salterns apartments (pictured right) are spacious and have been finished to a high standard with luxury contemporary interior design in New England style, with private patios and decked area balconies that overlook the marina, plus a communal decking area. They are ideal for families, groups of friends and couples who want to enjoy a couple of days ashore after a period of cruising. Guests can take advantage of private berthing just outside the door and enjoy the relaxed pet-friendly setting with the whole family. Premier’s boatyard, Chichester Marina offers a fantastic mix of onsite marine tenants. These companies offer everything from rigging services

LOCAL EATERIES

Visitors and berth holders do not have to go far for great food and a lively atmosphere. The Boat House Cafe is a relaxed eatery with plenty of seating inside and outside on a balcony overlooking the harbour. Serving an everchanging, seasonal menu, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The onsite Yacht Club has over 1,300 members, both sailing and motorboat enthusiasts, and sits in a prime location overlooking the harbour and within walking distance of the marina. The large modern clubhouse has a relaxing, spacious bar and a comfortable restaurant serving snacks and full meals. The club also runs regular social events

THINGS TO DO

Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, Chichester is surrounded by beautiful countryside, sandy beaches, fishing villages and historical and family attractions including Goodwood House and Racecourse. The marina is located at the eastern end of Chichester Harbour, just four miles from the historic city of Chichester. Frequent trains and buses make the city a good base from which to explore the local area and attractions. It is a city perfectly placed for all the arts; for lovers of culture The Pallant House Gallery is a must see and Chichester Festival Theatre is one of the finest regional theatres in the country. Chichester Cathedral, which has stood at its heart for 900 years, is famous for its art, both ancient and modern. The cathedral is also an iconic landmark and continues to attract thousands of visitors for its stunning architecture.

A short drive will take you to the village of Fishbourne, where the remains of Fishbourne Roman Palace and gardens lie. This is one of the outstanding Roman sites in the UK. Further round the harbour lies Bosham, a quintessentially English village with thatched-roofed cottages around a village green and on the coast itself, pastel-painted fishermen’s homes overlooking the water. Some of the greatest beaches are close by too including the sandy beaches of East Head and The Witterings. The region enjoys the beauty of the extensive, natural sheltered area of Chichester Harbour, together with long, sandy, unspoilt coastline stretching from West Wittering Beach to Bracklesham Bay. West Witterings is tucked away at the entrance to Chichester Harbour and is routinely voted one of the best beaches in Britain. There are no shops or cafes, just miles of wide sandy beach to explore,

to suit members of all ages and tastes, including informal suppers, dances, themed evenings, bridge, ramblers and golf days. The club is also running an upto-three-months free trial membership offer. If you want to go further afield, the traditional Crown & Anchor pub, located in Dell Quay, is a popular destination for walkers and can be easily accessed by the shore. Chichester Marina boasts its own chandlery, Marine Super Store. It offers everything from waterproofs, flares, rope, anchors to specialist items such as fittings and charts. Plus there is a small convenience store, selling a range of fresh foods and everyday essentials. perfect for dog walkers, and resembles a secret paradise.

CRUISING

For day cruises the Solent is a sailing playground on the South Coast and Chichester Marina is set in a prime location for sailors to pop over to the Isle of Wight for the day, take a more leisurely cruise to visit Premier’s other Solent marinas or discover the calm waters of Beaulieu River and tranquillity of Lymington Harbour. Chichester is an excellent base for cross channel cruises or local day trips to Premier’s Brighton and Eastbourne marinas, where berth holders can take advantage of their 42 free visitor passes. A little further afield the Channel Islands, Cherbourg and the Brittany coastline can all be easily explored or for those who want to stay close to UK shores a couple of days can be spent discovering the islands around Poole Harbour.

RECOMMENDATIONS

We have been sailing for 45 years and two months ago we bought a powerboat – a Prestige 42 Flybridge. We consider Chichester to be our second home; it is so peaceful, tranquil, safe and secure. We have been berth holders for 11 years at Chichester and have been visiting for 20 years. The showers and facilities are excellent. We use the lift out and onshore storage facilities and the boatyard team are friendly, careful and considerate. The Marina Reception staff are also very friendly and helpful. We come down every month of the year; there are lovely cycle and footpaths. The Boat House Cafe is also very nice and we like to visit with friends and sit outside and take in the view. Terry Eves, Retired, Andrea Jayne I first came to Chichester Marina, over 40 years ago as my friend had a small Fletcher speedboat. 25 years later that same boat came to me! I had to restore it and find an engine and then find somewhere to launch and Chichester Marina and Itchenor were the options. I then bought a Maxum 17 and during the winter months took on a Winter Berthing option in Chichester. On 31 March the following year, I went into the marina office to say goodbye to the delightful staff there and left shortly afterwards a fully paid up berth holder. Since then I have upgraded three more times and on each occasion the staff have been very helpful in re-berthing me. So, I have been a berth holder at Chichester for about 10 years and this will be my fourth boat here, a Sealine S38. I do not think I shall upgrade again although it would be good to have a flybridge. I like the location and the facilities at Chichester Marina but most importantly the staff here are helpful and friendly. Over the last couple of years I have visited all marinas in the Premier group and enjoyed a great welcome and the same level of service at each. I am a member of Chichester Yacht Club and like to eat there, as well as at the Boat House Cafe. For visitors, I think the new apartments are a terrific idea and also for those berth holders who live far away and like to be around the marina when their boats are out of the water undergoing maintenance. NEW FLOWER SCHEME AT WEYMOUTH MARINA DEAN & Reddyhoff’s resident landscape gardener has completed an attractive, yet sturdy planting scheme along the marina wall that is delighting local passers by and berth holders at Weymouth Marina. The mix of Cistus, French Lavender, Verbena Bonarensis, Grass Festuca and Heliochrysum has softened the walkway that many pass each day on their way into town or from the waterfront and marina. Neil Bedwell, who is Assistant Marina Manager at Weymouth, says he has been taken aback by the appreciative comments they have received in the office. ‘Dave Hill has been our gardener for over 10 years, and he knows his onions! Planting near the sea is not easy, and on top of that we have the traffic emissions along this busy road. He’s done a cracking job and we’re so pleased that everyone else in the town gets to enjoy the garden too. As the plants grow it will look even better and will put a smile on people’s faces as they arrive at the marina.’

TORQUAY MARINA GOES OVERBOARD WITH BERTH HOLDER TREATS MDL’s Torquay Marina has introduced a new range of marina services designed to take any possible hassle out of boating. Customers can select from a number of offers. The additional services will be provided by local suppliers and include a wide range of services; wine delivery straight to the berth holder’s boat, vouchers for trusted, local babysitters, a laundry and dry cleaning collection service, as well as a number of other added-value services including physiotherapy, massages and hairdressing. VIP DAY AT MDL’S TORQUAY MARINA MDL’s Torquay Marina, situated in the northeast corner of Torbay, played host to a very special VIP Aston Martin day recently. Five Aston Martins and a Bentley dropped by the marina, where their owners were indulged with a five-star lunch, cooked by renowned local chef, Simon Hulstone, on board luxury motoryacht, Triple 777. The VIP guests were treated to the fine dining experience, courtesy of local restaurant, The Elephant. An award–winning chef, with a talent for using local seasonal produce to create memorable flavours, Simon and his team at The Elephant were the first restaurant in Torquay to secure a coveted Michelin Star. Today, it also holds three AA rosettes.

The diners were welcomed on board with drinks and canapés, before a feast of Wye Valley asparagus, soft boiled Bantam eggs, wild garlic and capers, served with a crisp white 2014 Bacchus from Lyme Bay in Devon. This was followed by a main of fillet of Brixham hake, celeriac dice, samphire, chorizo, chicken jus and for dessert, vanilla pannacotta, jus fraise, Tellicherry black pepper and meringue. Lunch was served on board the 80ft Italian yacht from makers Azimut, Triple 777, which is berthed at Torquay Marina. From here, the Triple 777 Experience offers first-class hospitality for day charter, corporate and special events along the south coast. Mike Smith, Manager at Torquay Marina, commented:

“We were delighted to host our VIP guests recently at the marina. The beautiful Aston Martins and Bentley certainly drew admiring glances from our berth holders and visitors. Simon put on a superb lunch for the guests on board Triple 777. We certainly showcased Torquay Marina and its local amenities and we hope to welcome our special guests again in the near future.” www.torquaymarina.co.uk

ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2016

t s e b s Milford Marina e t i b Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

Penny pays a visit to Pembrokeshire’s Milford Marina and the wonderful Milford Fish Festival, part of Pembrokeshire Fish Week.

I was told later that I should have gone to Martha’s Vineyard, where I had stopped mid chowder trail to cleanse my palette, as they do a proper afternoon tea on lovely tiered plates with traditional china. As I was going to try out Foam’s tapas menu that evening it was time to retire to the Lord Nelson for a quick siesta before heading back to this ever popular bar/restaurant at the end of the marina.

T

he Milford Fish Festival is held at Milford Marina, which is run by the Port of Milford Haven. The marina is 25-years-old this year and they are celebrating throughout the summer. The 320-berth marina enjoys a wide range of shoreside facilities including cafes, bars and restaurants, gift shops, hairdressers/beauty salons and physio, along with the usual boat yard services, plus a wet fish outlet and a new smokery. Milford Fish Docks is Wales’ largest fishing port with landings of around 3,500 tonnes of fish (including shellfish) each year. The port is also home to Spanish and Belgian fleets. Milford is locked with an efficient system that was fitted last year, and you can be out in the Milford Haven Waterway just 10 minutes after entering the lock. This beautiful and commercially productive estuary on Pembrokeshire’s stunning coast provides habitats for wildlife and seabirds and plays an important role in conservation and is central to the UK’s fishing industry. With Milford Haven as your base, the world is your oyster with Cardiff Bay 96nm east, Aberystwyth 88nm north and Ilfracombe just over the water some 50nm south. Skomer, the island favoured by the puffins, is just 12nm away and RIB trips run around Ramsey Island most evenings, leaving from St David’s RNLI station. I can recommend Falcon Boats, where Ffion and Hannah run a very good, informative trip, getting you close to the seals, porpoises, razorbills and then follow the nippy, fighter pilot Shearwaters home for the evening.

FISH FESTIVAL

With wharf buildings surrounding the docks Milford Marina is the ideal site to host the Milford Fish Festival. This year it was extended to two days, kicking off the week long Pembrokeshire Fish Week that extends over the whole county and is recognised as an important national food festival. With numerous live bands and masses for the kids to do, from graffiti street art lessons to diving, via a bit of pavement chalking and trampolining, the whole family can spend the day here. I was keen to catch Chetna Makan, she of Bake Off fame (semi finalist in 2014), cooking up a storm of spiced prawns and a cardamom, white chocolate and pistachio cake, that was as light as it was fragrant.

In between the conservation stands and magnificent spider crabs sat a van that the graffiti artists may well have designed called X Ray Café. Their menu included ray cheeks and hake in tempura. Plump, firm cheeks, lightly battered, along with strips of hake on a bed of mashed avocado and slaw. They were very busy, as was the Pembrokeshire new potato stand, offering samples of buttery, chived baby spuds. The sea bass gleamed on ice in the fish marquee and the art and craft area was full of budding young makers. The beer tent looked over to the main stage (there was live music over both days), and there were also some fine wandering musicians – particularly the Pugwash duo, with a fiddle and accordion, and a large stomp style drum band, who were having a ball. But the highlight of the day was the fiercely contested Milford Chowder Trail. We queued up, collected spoon, bowl and voting card along with a map of the four restaurants taking part, and we were off. I started with the most beautifully presented chowder from the Harbour Master. It was creamy, well seasoned and with a razor clam as edible adornment. Next stop The Scoop Ice Cream Parlour where Pembrokeshire Yacht Club was based for the event. Then over to Gordon Bennett’s, the new fish and chip sit-down restaurant on the quayside, with lots of succulent prawns and fresh crab meat on top, if you wished.

TASTY TREATS ■ Breakfast: French toast with peanut butter and bananas at Foam ■ Best bakers: Welsh Bakery of course, with shops in MH and Haverfordwest ■ Lunch: Street food X Ray Café ■ Afternoon tea: Either at the Crow’s Nest, where they have an enormous choice of cakes, or Martha’s Vineyard where you get a proper afternoon tea, with all the trimmings The Chowder Trail was great fun – and tasty

Milford Haven Marina

■ The hike: Circular walk to Blackbridge www.pembrokshire.gov.uk ■ The drive: The half hour trip over the bridge and down to Saundersfoot is delightful with lunch at Coast, looking out over the sands at Coppet Hall beach. Young chef Will Holland, who gained his first Michelin star at La Becasse in Ludlow, is now cooking at Coast, a magnificent wood clad environmentally sound building hugging the bay. The fish is fresh out of the bay, crab from Carmarthen and much of the veg from sister hotel The Grove, who have a proper garden. Read the full Coast review here: http://bit.ly/ bestbitesmilford

G&T BREAK

Feeling slightly over chowdered I stop for a sharp G&T on Martha’s Vineyard’s terrace, in the blazing sun, before heading to my last soup kitchen at the Pheonix Bowl, passing happy pavement artists and the busy fish stalls. This is the first chowder to have sweetcorn in it, and the chunks of baby corn really cut through the richness of the soup. Now to cogitate and mark my results sheet. I head back to the marina for a quiet cup of tea and slice of cake. There is quite a choice so I ask the friendly hairdressers where they go. The Crow’s Nest was the prompt reply, so I had a cream tea there but could have chosen at least 10 different cakes. The layered Sparkle Cake in pinks caught my eye.

■ Dinner: Tapas at Foam again. We shared calamari, pulled pork, chicken Katsu and spicy king prawns. Eton Mess for pudding. A good choice of gins and great coffee.

Bake Off’s Chetna Makan’s cookery demo

It is Milford Fish Festival, of course

■ Other things to do: The good local Torch Theatre, the Waterfront Gallery and Milford Museum.

ALL AT SEA CREW

IN THE DRINK COWES WEEK DEBUTANT

With Paul Antrobus

BRITAIN’S MOST READ WATERFRONT NEWSPAPER

BY PAUL ANTROBUS

The Isle of Wight Distillery’s new Wight Mermaid Gin is making its first Cowes Week appearance this month.

Editorial Director Bob Satchwell bob@allatsea.co.uk

am surprised that the commercially astute Isle of Wight only just has its first distillery. The Isle of Wight Distillery is based at the established Rosemary Vineyard near Ryde and the two founders, Xavier Baker and Conrad Gauntlett, have been able to transfer years of experience in wine making and brewing to distilling gin and vodka. Wight Mermaid Gin is very much in the ‘boutique’ small-batch distilling range at 42 per cent and £36.50 a 70cl bottle. Like other boutique gin producers, they work hard on their flavour differential with an interesting range of botanicals added to the essential juniper berries: hand-picked rock samphire from a secret IoW location, Boadicea hops grown at the Ventnor Botanic Garden, English coriander seeds, fresh lemon zest, elderflower and angelica, liquorish and orris roots.

Eco-warriors indeed, and not the first time consumers have been asked to pay the eco premium. SaltWater is too small to export its beer or to fund worldwide development of the edible rings. To go ‘global’ they unselfishly want a big brewer with R&D funds to take it up and if others join the bandwagon the cost would come down. It would be nice to think a UK brewery with sailing connections could be enthused by our own sailing and boating fraternity to bring the product over here. T

he SaltWater Craft Brewery in Delray, Florida has invented an edible 100 per cent biodegradable material to replace the plastic six-pack rings used to hold beer or any other cans together for multi-buy retail. Horrific underwater photographs have shown how life threatening plastic rings are to turtles and other marine life. Sailors worldwide led by clubs and sailing rules and national bodies like our RYA have got the message

and compliance is widespread: no plastic can rings, aluminium cans lined by plastic or empty plastic water bottles thrown overboard. But the brewery tells me it is nonsailing folk who are still the biggest polluters in their own Florida backyard. The rings are created from barley and wheat ‘spent’ residuals from the beer brewing process and are 100 per cent biodegradable and edible by fish. The main drawback is that the rings cost more than plastic. The brewery hopes customers will pay a few cents more to help the environment.

ECO-WARRIORS

The exact recipe is, of course, a secret. The botanicals are steeped together for 24 hours, distilled for a whole day and then rested for seven days to allow the flavours and aromas to mellow. Tasting notes: classic freshness, hints of citrus and tropical fruit, raisins and vanilla. As with most boutique gins, Fever-Tree is the recommended tonic. This is the gin’s first Cowes Week but not the distillery’s first sailing involvement, having sponsored the Sail the Wight event last month with gin and tonics for the prize-giving party and bottles for the winners. Try it during Cowes Week at Coast bar, Ale House, the Anchor, the Grill, the Island Sailing Club, the RORC, formerly Royal Corinthian YC and at the Wine Therapy shop (opposite the Fountain Hotel) where several other speciality wines and spirits can be found.
