The award reflects Britain’s continuing strength on the water. half of the 2015 ISaF nominations were British. FroM PAGe one: Vector Martini racing had plenty to celebrate at Coniston after claiming three National Speed records and three of the prestigious K7 Gold Stars during the 45th Coniston Powerboat record Week. The British National Immersed Propeller record has stood since 2011 at a speed of 107.94mph and was broken first by Mal Crease, CEO Vector Martini racing, at a speed of 113mph, and then by former All at Sea columnist and powerboat racer Shelley Jory-Leigh at a speed of 114.5mph. Both earnt a prestigious K7 Gold Star for breaking a record at over 100mph and as this year’s fastest lady Shelley was winner of The Shepherds Trophy, VMr’s Simon Powell also broke the aPBa Marathon ‘a’ class record at 120.46mph. all were co-piloted by cofounder and world record holder Peter Dredge (K7 No.43). The youngest entry of the week was Thomas Mantripp. aged 14 he was attempting the GT15 World record with the support of mum, dad and Team
Pepstar. It was a case of so near and yet so far when Thomas fell just 0.17mph short of a new record. The English Lakes hotels Trophy is awarded to the Youngest record breaker. It was 18-year-old Connor Blackman who won becoming a World and National record holder in the P750 Stock class at 54.62mph. Coniston record Week’s 2015 event also marked the 60th anniversary of Donald Campbell establishing a new World Water Speed record when breaking the 200mph barrier on water. Both records were achieved on Ullswater on 23 July 1955, in Bluebird K7, reaching a speed of 202.32mph. VMr’s Peter Dredge said: “I have broken many records in my 25 years of racing, but this is a special moment for the team to be breaking records on Lake Coniston. It is the lake where Donald Campbell CBE, an inspiration to all powerboat racing enthusiasts, made his final record attempts nearly 50 years ago.” Next year’s dates: 31 October - 4 November

ALL AT SEA DECEMBER 2015
ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde
IT was only two months ago that All at Sea featured a women in boating special highlighting not only the achievements of women sailors but also the range of opportunities they have at all levels of the sport. Now we are delighted to report that one of the sailors we spotlighted, Sarah Ayton, has won ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. Not only is Sarah competing at the highest level but she is doing so in a male dominated environment – she is the only female crew member on board The Wave, Muscat in the Extreme Sailing Series. Huge congratulations to Sarah on her win and good luck in the final act of the 2015 Extreme Sailing Series in Australia. We have an interview with Sarah coming up soon. It is hard to believe that it was a year ago that I stepped into the editor’s shoes here at All at Sea. It is a wonderful paper to work on but even better are the incredible readers we have. I have to thank you for all the emails you have sent in and especially all the photos we have received for Photo of the Month. They have been so good, in fact, that next month we will be choosing the best of 2015. Send yours in and you could be in All at Sea next year. Before 2016 arrives we do, of course,
have the festive season to enjoy. To help you with those last minute shopping decisions we have put together a Christmas gift guide with everything from the classic soap on a rope to boating event vouchers. December is a time to reflect on the year that has gone by but also to look ahead to what 2016 will bring and without a doubt it is going to be an important year for sports fan. The America’s Cup World Series continues, the Clipper Round the World challenge reaches it conclusion in the summer and, of course, our best sailors will be heading to Rio for the Olympic Games. Turn to page 18 for a look ahead at Rio 2016. Back to this year. What have been your 2015 highlights? Cowes Week? Boat shows? Round the Island Race? Holidays? Go to the All at Sea Facebook page and post your favourite memories. The RYA’s review of 2015 on page 16 might help to jog your memory. As always the RYA has had an incredibly busy year and, like us, is looking forward to more of the same next year. Have a wonderful Christmas and we will see you in 2016! Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk
WOMEN ON WATER Dear All at Sea I enjoyed the above article immensely. I’ve recently started water sports on the Thames and I am having a fantastic time. The article was hugely inspiring and I thank you for referring to us females as ‘women’ and not ‘girls’. I feel that adult women in sport are often not taken as seriously as we could be due to the fact that sports commentators and media representation insists on referring to us with this diminutive noun. Jordana
Thank you for your email Jordana. It is wonderful how many inspirational women there are out there, like Sarah Ayton who won the 2015 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. Be sure to let us know how you get on with your water sports! We are always keen to hear from women on water, professional or amateur, sail or power, young or old. Send in your stories, experiences or just a photo of you and your boat.
Battle of Jutland centenary
German cruiser sinking during the Battle of Jutland. Image: Everett Historical
ON 31 May and 1 June 1916, 150 British and 100 German warships fought for supremacy in the North Sea in the Battle of Jutland. When the battle was over, 25 warships were on the seabed and more than 8,500 sailors were dead – more than two-thirds of them British. Now the largest collection of artefacts, photographs and personal testimonies ever assembled will commemorate the centenary of the Royal Navy’s biggest 20th-Century battle.
Shrapnel, shell-hole-speared pieces of bulkhead and the Victoria Cross won by a Royal Marine whose last action saved battle-cruiser HMS Lion – and 1,000 souls aboard – are among more than 100 items to go on display in Portsmouth. The 100th anniversary of the battle will be the Royal Navy’s milestone event as part of WW1 centenary commemorations with events in the Orkneys – the fleet’s principal base in both world wars – over the wrecks in the North Sea, in Belfast where Jutland veteran cruiser HMS
Caroline will be opened as a museum and at the naval memorials in Plymouth, Chatham and Portsmouth. At the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth the wooden boathouse which housed the Mary Rose Museum before it moved to the Victory arena will be transformed to house the exhibition ‘36 hours: Jutland 1916, The Battle That Won The War’. Commemorative events for Jutland 2016 start in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with the formal opening on 24 May.

AFTER one of the toughest legs of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the first teams to arrive in Albany, Western Australia from Cape Town were LMAX Exchange followed by Derry~Londonderry~Doire in second and Qingdao third. The race was a typical Southern Ocean leg, with the fleet enduring a storm as it left Table Bay and taking a battering. The choices made in those first 36 hours shaped the race for a lot of the teams, with the top three yachts enduring it well and keeping up a lot of sail during the storm. All the boats reported boat-breaking conditions with gusts of 70 - 80 knots on several occasions, extremely confused seas and waves of 8-10m during the race. Race 4, The Elliot Brown Timekeeper Cup from Albany to Sydney, began on 01 December.

FROM BOATING WITH LOVE
TO celebrate the release of Spectre, The Moorings has revealed the top eight boats from the James Bond film franchise in The Moorings Presents: License to Sail. The collection of marine vehicles have been chosen for their appearance in iconic Bond scenes, how recognisable they are to audiences and how intriguing they are. They include the Q-Boat from The World is Not enough and the Lotus esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me. Filled with vintage-style animations, viewers can discover behind the scenes facts and lesser known information about some of the more unique modes of transport we have seen on our
MIDDLETON SETS SAIL
Royal Navy minehunter HMS Middleton has sailed from her home in Portsmouth for a threeyear deployment to the Gulf where she will protect vital sea lanes and provide wider maritime security to the region.
The winner of Bart’s Bash 2015 has been revealed as duo Alex Schon and Marc hiles, sailing at Lake Deneys Yacht Club, South Africa. Alex and Marc beat thousands of participants from 62 countries, who took part in the global sailing event on 20 September. essex’s Clacton Sailing Club took the rest of the podium places with Pete Boxer and eilish Dempsey claiming second place and Matthew Burrell and Jack Wayland taking third. After hearing of the news Alex, who sailed with Marc in a Nacra F20, said: “This year we had winds of 35 knots and with a short, sharp chop this made for a wild ride, with our Nacra 20 at times launching itself right out of the water. We had a fantastic ride and took a somewhat conservative approach. With only Marc out on the wire, we managed to keep our beast upright. “I think that the tough conditions prevented more people from attending, but I really believe that this event needs to grow and that the great work that is being done needs to spread throughout the world, in particular throughout Africa.” Bart’s Bash has so far seen in excess of 50,000 people taking part in the event and has also been a catalyst for encouraging more people, young and old, into the sport. All the funds raised from Bart’s Bash are used to help the Andrew Simpson Sailing
coastguard after a rogue wave caught the yacht while it was in a hove to position. The boat, which sustained damage to its rig in addition to taking on water while inverted, was successfully taken to Spain. Alex said: “I have never experienced anything like it. I was asleep and woke up to a boat upside down rapidly filling with water. Guillermo and I responded
together as a team to the difficult situation and now that my boat’s back safely we can focus on our Vendee Globe campaign as a team. We have overcome problems before and I am as determined as ever to succeed.” www.AlexThomsonracing.com Don’t miss Boating People with Alex next month!

SIR BEN’S NEW ROLE The most successful Olympic sailor of all time and Team Principal and Skipper of Britain’s America’s Cup Challenger, Sir Ben Ainslie, is now also an Ambassador for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Sir Ben kicked off his role by inviting a group of youngsters from Laureus-supported Big World Impact project to the new home of Land Rover BAR in Portsmouth. The youngsters, many of whom had never been out on the water before, were given an exclusive sailing lesson from Sir Ben, followed by a tour of his team’s hi-tech base. Alongside his team-mates, Sir Ben offered one-to-one advice to the youngsters on setting and achieving goals, and learning life lessons through sport. The Laureus Foundation uses the power of sports like sailing as a tool for social change. Its work focuses on helping young people overcome problems such as juvenile crime, violence, drug abuse, discrimination, AIDS and health issues such as obesity. Since its inception it has raised €85 million which has helped to improve the lives of millions of young people.

NEWS IN BRIEF MOUNTS BAY LEAVES
Model joins Clipper Race MarinE unit
unDEr thrEat
Falmouthians bid farewell to ‘their’ ship after more than 18 months in the picturesque port. RFA Mounts Bay has been alongside at the town’s Duchy Wharf, initially in extended readiness, then undergoing the most comprehensive overhaul in her ten-year career, courtesy of A&P. Still to come is Operational Sea training, the rigorous assessment of the ship’s company and equipment, to ensure they are ready for the demands of deployment, followed by sailing on front-line duties early next year.
NEW GOLD ANCHORS
the new Gold Anchor Global Marina Accreditation was launched at MetS. the initiative brings together the Yacht Harbour Association and the Marina Industries Association’s Gold Anchor schemes. the Accreditation will be phased in as current Gold Anchor marinas from across 26 countries are re-audited as part of a three year rolling accreditation cycle. New entrants to the scheme will automatically be audited under the new scheme, which comes into effect on 1 April 2016. www.goldanchors.com

WHERE TO SAIL IN DECEMBER - ANTIGUA
treat yourself to a pre-Christmas break in the Caribbean. With direct flights and perfect weather, Antigua is a great choice for a week’s sailing holiday.
MISS Universe UK winner and former I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here contestant Amy Willerton will take on one of her toughest endurance challenges yet when she sails 3,350nm across the Atlantic Ocean in the final leg of the world’s longest ocean race and endurance challenge, the Clipper 2015-16 round the World Yacht race. Like 40 per cent of Clipper race crew, Amy had no previous sailing experience before completing an intensive four week sail training course. In complete contrast to her glamorous LA lifestyle, Amy will sleep in a small bunk and share a confined 70ft living space with up to 23 other crew mates. Amy will be in a watch system which works in four hour shift patterns to allow the
boat to keep racing 24/7, and she will join the rest of the crew in taking turns to cook and clean for the entire team, all while the boat can be heeling over at a 45 degree angle. Amy, no stranger to endurance challenges, having completed the London Marathon and various triathlons, will join the Garmin team in June 2016 when the Clipper race sets sail from New York for its homecoming leg which will take approximately two months to complete. Including stopovers in Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland and Den Helder, the Netherlands, Amy and the rest of the Clipper race crew’s adventure will conclude in London on 30 July 2016 with a spectacular Thames river parade. www.clipperroundtheworld.com
IT is feared that lives will be put at risk with the government’s announcement that all funding for police patrolling Portsmouth’s coast could be cut. This would see the Hampshire police marine unit losing £450,000 of Home Office funding in 2017. That is almost half of its annual budget forcing the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Hayes to decide if they can afford to maintain the unit from their own dwindling budget. The Marine Unit, launched in 2012, has an important role that includes patrolling important commercial and naval sites and maintaining close links with the marine community as well as partner agencies such as MCA. They can also often be found at sailing clubs and marinas to raise public awareness on issues surrounding crime and national security.Chairman of the Hampshire Police and Crime Panel, Councillor David Stewart, has highlighted his concern in a letter to the UK’s top anti-terror officer, Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark rowley. He said the plans had created ‘substantial concern’ among members of the county’s crime panel and could have a major impact on the security of, for example, large events in the Solent. This year the work of the marine unit has ranged from policing the America’s Cup World Series to the Hoegh Osaka car transporter incident.

Class of 2015 at Brighton
The first new members to join Brighton Marina Yacht Club following its move to brand new premises at the marina have completed a five-week introduction to the basics of racing and are now ready to join the regular Sunday racing crews. volunteer BMYC boat owners and their crew have been introducing newcomers to sailing for over 25 years, with over 1,500 people participating so far. “Too many people think that yacht racing is expensive or exclusive, and that is just not true,” said BMYC commodore Phil Thomas. “We have helped people to put a toe in the water and decide if the sport is for them. When they join us as new members, they are invited to take part in our next introductory Club Class series for free.” Membership also provides access to the new waterside bar and restaurant at the new BMYC clubhouse. www.bmyc.org.uk

The book we read, Mischief in Patagonia, was first published in 1937. However this edition features a fascinating foreword by one of Britain’s best known sailors Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Harold Tilman had many adventures on board the converted Bristol Channel pilot cutter Mischief, and in this book you can follow the first of these in which he and his crew travelled

SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
SAFETY remains at the forefront for powerboating’s world governing body, the Union Internationale Motonautique, and its technical commissioners. Methods aimed at improving head and neck protection were tested in Abu Dhabi during the final round of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. Several dunk tests were carried out using specially designed equipment that replicates an enclosed two-seater enclosed cockpit. By the end of September 2016, after completion of further tests, a final decision will be taken for mandatory implementation in 2017.
TORQEEDO UNVEILS DEVELOPMENTS
ABU DHABI SEALS CHAMPIONSHIP
AMERICANS Gary Ballough and John Tomlinson, Team Abu Dhabi, overcame a heart-stopping moment on lap 3 when they were forced to shut down an engine, before restarting and going on to finish second in the final race of the season at the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi to win the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir bin Hendi ended the season with their first win of the year to secure the championship runner’s-up slot.
TORQEEDO debuted a new line of innovative electric motors at this year’s Marine Equipment Trade Show. The first is the new Deep Blue Saildrive. Offering 25kW power output, the Deep Blue Saildrive offers displacements hulls weighing up to 50 tonnes the opportunity to reach maximum speeds of 18+ km/h, propulsive power of 16.2kW and is comparable with a 40hp petrol motor. Most suited for use in rugged environments and more extreme conditions, the Cruise family also has a new addition – the Cruise 10.0, in RS, RL and RXL models. Suitable for planing and displacement hulls, its 10kW power ensures planing boats can achieve
speeds of 35km/h and 15km/h for displacement hulls weighing between three and ten tonnes. Its comparable petrol engine is 20hp. Finally, one of Torqeedo’s most popular models, the Cruise 2.0, returns to the collection with new POD drives in 2.0 FP, 4.0 FP and 10.0 FP models. The new Cruise models have a folding propeller and offer a propulsion power of 1.12kW, 2.24kW and 6.6kW respectively. You will be able to view all three new Torqeedo engines at the London Boat Show in January. www.torqeedo.com

SPECIAL FEATURE GARMIN HAMBLE WINTER SERIES
All images: Paul Wyeth
Winter winners
As the UK’s most popular winter sailing series draws to a close and the final races are hotly contested, Pippa Treavett goes behind the scenes to find out more.
From october to December each year the crews of around 125 boats from IrC and one Design classes spend their weekends competing in the Garmin Hamble Winter Series. Priding itself on the quality of racing on offer, the Garmin Hamble Winter Series, organised by the Hamble river Sailing Club, relies on a team of experienced race officers and sailing enthusiasts who are keen to give back to their sport and make sure competitors consistently enjoy great racing and a warm welcome ashore. A diverse range of keelboats and sports boats compete in the series and its associated events. These include IrC 0-4, J/111, J/109, J/88, Sigma 38, J/80, J/70, SB20 and Impala 28 classes. robbie and Lis robinson (Hot rats, IrC2) have been enthusiastic competitors in the Series for many years. Lis said: “I do not know any other club that can muster such a range of national and international race officials which result in good courses. The race quality attracts some serious opposition and Hot rats consider getting a podium result a great achievement given the quality of the competition.” Lis is also a keen race officer and has been honing her experience at sub-events that took place on Saturdays in october. She says she has been fortunate enough to
learn from some outstanding race officials, adding: “Hopefully, being poacher turned gamekeeper also results in some improved tactics!” BIGGER & BETTER The series was established more than 30 years ago when current Hamble river Sailing Club commodore Trevor Pountain dreamed of Sunday sailing that was closer to home than Lymington. Now a key member of the Winter Series organising team, Trevor said: “From those early conversations with Jamie Wilkinson and malcolm Donald 34 years ago, the Hamble Winter Series has continued from strength to strength. It is no longer small, but remains a friendly team effort, run primarily by volunteer club members. Hamble, with its close proximity to the Solent, is a great sailing base.” No longer racing, Trevor now manages another vital element of any sailing event – sponsors. “Garmin has been our main sponsor for 11 years. Not only a great supporter, they provide marine products for us to provide feedback on. The one Design and Big Boat sub events have their own sponsor and each race day prize-giving is sponsored by local and marine businesses. Also essential are event photographer Paul Wyeth and clothing partner Helly Hansen,” said Trevor.
ON THE WATER While wanting to spend maximum time on the water, the race team has to strike the balance between offering good value for money racing and getting everyone back on dry land before dark. To achieve this, the GHWS offers two races on the Sundays before the clocks change, and then one, longer race each Sunday as the nights draw in. During the week, race officers check weather forecasts, tides, wind speeds and direction to gather thoughts on possible courses. on race day, the race officers use median yacht performance charts to make sure the courses are a decent length, contain a mix of fair beats and runs, and force some tactical thinking by the competitors. Pace boats are tracked around the course and laid race marks can be moved to lengthen or shorten courses to hit target times. Winter Series marklayers are very experienced, and also offer opportunities to those wishing to gain expertise through a ‘buddy’ system. Excellent communication with competitors is essential and a mix of VHF, sound signals and flags are used to keep the competitors updated on the racing and any adjustments. Ben meakins, co-owner of Impala 28 Polly and a competitor in the IrC Class
4, said, “The Solent is a highly tactical place to sail and the course setters consistently set us challenges to keep us on our toes. Knowing the race area well is key to success in the Winter Series – as is having the right boat and a good fleet to race against. “Polly was the first Impala to launch back in 1979, and Hamble river now has an eight boat and growing Impala 28 fleet, which shows the enduring nature of these David Thomas designed classics. We race in IrC-4, and also have extracted results for the closely matched Impala fleet.” HARD AT WORK United by their love of sailing, every member of the all volunteer race team has an important role to play. Paperwork and tape recordings build a picture of what happened and when, which ensures clean starts, fair races and accurate results. Paperwork and protests need to be processed from the weekend before, rIBs are refuelled, committee boats checked, marks inflated and food ordered for the following weekend. With a race management team of more than 40 people on the water some weekends, food is always a major consideration. The Series also needs a large number of assets - up to 17 inflatable marks and ground tackle, four rIBs and five committee boats on the busiest weekends. racers who join race teams are surprised by how non-stop the roles are. Contrary to popular opinion, the race management team on the committee boat are not dreaming of a Sunday roast once the races have started. Instead, they have eyes outside the boat observing fleet progress against expected race times, monitoring the radio for protests and retirements and letting the finish boat know start times and number of boats
on the start line before setting up for the next race. Nick meadow, a keen sailor and Technical Sales Executive at Garmin, competed this year on Simon Henning’s mumm 36 Alice, IrC1 winner at the Hamble Big Boat Championships. Nick said, “The race committee did a great job in getting 12 races in over the two weekends of the Big Boat series in what were often shifty conditions. The turnaround time between races was great, with square lines and the length of the races very well managed. my personal preference is for a quicker race and it shows how consistent the courses were when on one of the days racing our corrected time was in 44th min in three out of the four races.” The pace of the races is fantastic. Everyone appreciates that the races are held so quickly back to back as well as the commitment to making sure the races are fair and the lines are square.” ROLL ON 216 As one Series finishes, planning starts for the next. Next year, Iro Stuart Childerley takes over as Pro of the Hamble Winter Series, working with a highly experienced team of race officers who will manage individual days or events across the Series. In January, the organising team will begin working closely with class captains and associations so that competitors and sponsors continue to get the most from the Series. As planning for the 35th birthday celebrations of one of the UK’s most popular sailing events gets underway, I am feeling inspired by the commitment of the team – so maybe next year is the year I persuade my brother to let me join his crew and take part in the Series. RYA FOCUS
The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
BY EMMA SLATER
This year... Yet again it has been a busy year for the RYA, from events and boats shows to crowning champions, getting people on the water and protecting the rights and interests of our 106,000 plus members. JANUARY Kicking off the year, outstanding youngster George Gillingham, from Poole in Dorset, was presented with the RYA Yachtmaster™ of the Year award at the London Boat Show. The second edition of the RYA Safety Advisory Notice was launched in January and The Green Blue launched four new digital green guides. FEBRUARY More than 50 awards were given to powerboat racing’s crème de la crème at the annual RYA Powerboat Racing Awards Ceremony in February. To coincide with Lifeskills National Careers Week we showcased some of the great jobs that are available within the marine sector. Meanwhile Invasive Species Week gave us an opportunity to raise awareness of exactly how people can prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species, which can have a devastating impact on British plants, animals and ecosystems.
MAY May, and it was time once more for the annual RYA Push The Boat Out event. In total 347 venues held 511 events, which resulted in over 6,500 new participants joining clubs, signing up for a follow on session or booking a training course. Datchet Water Sailing Club successfully hosted The Green Blue’s interactive Marine CSI Challenge making them the first sailing club in the UK to run the new environmental education resource. And it was blast off as the 2015 Powerboat GP British Championship got underway at Carr Mill Dam. 30 teams from all the over UK headed to Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club for the start of the British championship to battle it out in the five Powerboat GP classes.
The RYA had a fully interactive stand at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup in Portsmouth
George Gillingham won RYA Yachtmaster™ of the Year
MARCH It was yet another very successful RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show with some 9,500 visitors heading to Alexandra Palace for the only show in the world dedicated to all things dinghy sailing. At the show RYA OnBoard celebrated 10 years of getting youngsters on the water. Since the programme was created, more than half a million children have experienced sailing and windsurfing with more than 50,000 enjoying the sport so much they have continued to sail on a regular basis. Next year’s show dates are 5 - 6 March.
The 2015 Powerboat GP British Championship got underway in Lancashire
JUNE The British Sailing Team clinched 11 medals at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth & Portland, securing a hat-trick of golds on a nail-biting final day of World Cup racing with Giles Scott, Nick Dempsey and the 470 duo of Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark all closing out event victories. Silver medals also went to Tom Squires and Bryony Shaw in the men’s and women’s RS:X windsurfing events and bronze to the 49er duo of John Pink and Stuart Bithell as Great Britain topped the Olympic classes medal standings at this fourth leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup series.
Around 9,500 people attended the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show
APRIL London 2012 gold medallist Helena Lucas was the first athlete selected to represent ParalympicsGB at Rio 2016 - a selection which saw her become the first official member of either ParalympicsGB or Team GB for Rio. In the spring the RYA responded to Defra’s consultation on the sites proposed for designation in the second tranche of Marine Conservation Zones. We considered the Government’s proposals in detail to ensure that they are based on objective and robust evidence, and that any potential impacts on recreational boating interests are minimised.
JULY At the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup in Portsmouth the RYA hosted a fully interactive stand offering visitors the chance to try a range of sailing simulators and different activities. We launched our 2015 Kill Cord and Kill Switch Survey to examine causes of kill cord failure other than human error, so that we are able to shape future advice, training and work with manufacturers. Through collaboration with SAR organisations, we also saw some key improvements to the technical and operational aspects of the RYA’s SafeTrx App. Recognition of the value of the SafeTrx application hit the mainstream in 2015, seeing it pick up a number of international awards.
There were 10 new champions crowned on the final day of the RYA Youth Nationals and 28 sailors were selected to represent Great Britain at the EUROSAF Youth European Championships in Brest, France, in August.
The British Sailing Team won 11 medals at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth & Portland
Giles Scott brought home gold from the Rio Test Event
AUGUST It was gold for Giles Scott as he clinched a final day Finn class victory at the Olympic Test Event in Rio, seeing him continue his two-year winning streak. While 470 duo Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark had to settle for silver after a medal race mistake saw their regatta lead slip away. We carried out a survey seeking our members’ opinion on RYA membership and the likelihood of recommending RYA membership to others. We were delighted to receive a score of 83 per cent and will be striving to improve on this next time. SEPTEMBER September and we were off to the Southampton Boat Show. With our stand in a new location directly in front of the RYA members’ lounge the RYA was truly at the heart of the show, with some 8,000 members and guests visiting the lounge during the show. While at Southampton we celebrated the winners of the ilovesailing calendar competition and The Green Blue celebrated 10 years. Eight sailors were named as the first athletes on the British teamsheet for the Rio 2016 Olympics and in the Team15 Champions Cup, West Kirby Warriors and Oxford Zoomers were crowned joint Champions. OCTOBER In October the RYA successfully argued that private pleasure craft of 13.7m up to 24m in length should not be compelled to carry rocket parachute flares.
The Green Blue launched its first ever University Sailing Sustainability Challenge, with university sailing clubs around the UK competing to undertake a series of sustainable actions throughout the academic year (turn to page 26 to find out more). NOVEMBER Kicking off the month, five British sailors were named in the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year shortlist, including the British Sailing Teams’ Giles Scott. We also unveiled the winners of the RYA Volunteer Awards, celebrating the commitment of the countless volunteers across the country who do fantastic work to support boating in all its forms. Tickets to the 2016 RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show went on sale and the RYA Press Team were shortlisted in the Maritime Media Awards… fingers crossed! DECEMBER As for December, the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships take place in Langkawi and the team are busy prepping for the London Boat Show to kick off the New Year… but at the time of writing we are still waiting to see what else December will bring! So that’s just a taster of what the RYA has been up to this year as we head towards another busy year in 2016 which will include the likes of the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show in March, Push the Boat Out and a whole host of other events and activities and, of course, Rio 2016. www.rya.org.uk

BRITISH SAILING TEAM FOLLOWING THE BRITISH TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO
The future is bright
49er FX sailor Sophie Ainsworth celebrates a strong result at the recent World Championships after a tough 2015.
THIS year certainly has not been plain sailing for Charlotte (Dobson) and myself, but we are proud to have recently finished fifth at the 49erFX World Championships in Buenos Aires and are really excited and positive about what the future holds as we approach the final year of the Olympic cycle. We have suffered a few tough setbacks in 2015, but in hindsight we can say without a doubt that what does not break you makes you stronger. At the end of May I bulged two discs in my neck, which resulted in me having to get an epidural in my neck. It was a long road to recovery and consequently we missed the Weymouth and Portland World Cup and European Championships. It definitely was not the build up to the Olympic Test Event or World Championships that we wanted.
NEW COACH We also spent six months without a consistent coach and although we still had world class input into our programme and Derek Clark was a rock for us, the consistency we desperately wanted was not there. We are delighted that Mark Asquith is now the British 49erFX Podium coach. He has instantly added more energy to our campaign and we are eager to see how the unit we build with him can help our performances. In Buenos Aires we achieved our best Worlds result to date and we were only four points off a medal. Not only this, but going into the Medal Race the gold medal was very much ours for the taking. Ultimately, the race did not go our way and we finished fifth overall, but after the last six months there were a lot of positives we could take from the week.
Charlotte Dobson and Sophie Ainsworth are aiming for Rio 2016. Image: British Sailing Team
For us the Worlds very much reflect where we are. When we set our expectations before the regatta Mark was very realistic with us about our expectations at the end of a tough year when the 49erFX fleet has improved so much. We told him that we knew we had the ability to finish in the top five. We definitely had not had the ideal build up but we had the belief. MEDAL RACE We did exactly what we set out to do, and although it is hard not to be disappointed in the final result, as we were so close to that Worlds medal, there
is so much we can take from it. It was another event where we built on our series throughout the regatta, moving up the leaderboard as the event progressed. Now that we are building a solid unit with our coach, things are only going to move forward and we feel like our ‘A’ game is just getting going. Luckily for us our next World Championships is in less than three months in Clearwater, Florida. Our campaign has one goal, to win gold at Rio 2016, but there are a few hurdles we need to jump first. First we must beat the other British 49erFX teams to win the spot to represent Great Britain at the Games. As with any elite sport it is a real
rollercoaster of a journey but we will be trying to enjoy every moment of it. ALL AT SEA DECEMBER 2015
SPECIAL FEATURE
Rio here we come! LOOKING AHEAD TO RIO 2016
2016 is almost here and with it comes the greatest sporting event of them all – the Olympic Games. And it just so happens that Team GB has a history of doing rather well at sailing...
Team GB also has another winning record to preserve having won more Olympic sailing gold medals than any other nation. Since the sport was first introduced into the Olympics at the 1900 Paris games Team GB have brought home 25 golds – four of them belonging to Sir Ben Ainslie - and 54 medals in total. Fittingly it was the London 1908 Olympic Games that saw sailing begin its unbroken run as an Olympic sport. There have been plenty of changes in the 100 or so years that have passed, and since the 2012 Games alone the following class changes have taken place: n Women’s (elliott 6m) and men’s (Star) keelboat events have been eliminated. n Multi-hulls return, represented by the Nacra 17. n Women’s skiff has been added, represented by the 49erFX.
These new classes, along with the others already featuring, have already been confirmed for Tokyo 2020. Sadly, though, Paralympic sailing classes are already out of the 2020 Olympic Games. With the two changes to sailing classes there will be a total of 10 events at Rio. Laser sailing star Nick Thompson will be at Rio 2016. Image: British Sailing Team
HISTORICAL FACT Although sailing has been used for transport since ancient times it was around 400 years ago in Holland that it grew in popularity as a leisure pursuit. Shortly after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, King Charles II introduced sailing as a sport here. RIO 2016 5 - 21 August 2016 Sailing is scheduled to be held from 5–21 August at Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay n www.teamgb.com @TeamGB n www.britishsailingteam.com @BritishSailing n paralympics.org.uk @ParalympicsGB n www.rya.org.uk n www.rio2016.com/en @Rio2016_en n www.rio2016.com/en/the-games/ paralympic/event Turn to page 18 to read this month’s British Sailing Team report.

470 Men and women’s double-handed dinghy. The 470, first recognised as an Olympic class in 1976, was also the first women’s class, accepted into the Olympic Games in 1988 in Seoul. 2012: Silver for Luke Patience/ Stuart Bithell 2012: Silver for Hannah Mills/ Saskia Clark 49er High performance skiff - open. Designed by Australian architect Julian Bethwaite in 1995, the class made its debut at the 2000 Sydney Games. 49erFX NEW! Women’s two-person skiff. The boat will be making its Olympic debut as the Women’s Skiff event at the 2016 Olympic Games. Nacra 17 NEW! Mixed Multihull. The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will see the return of the mixed multihull to the Olympic program in the form of the Nacra 17.
We are about to tick over into another Olympic year and with it comes the excitement, anticipation and inevitable highs and lows of competition. While we were spoilt by having the home Games in 2012, the distance from London to Rio is a whopping 5,767 miles, or 5011nm. Despite this there will be huge support for Team GB, both in the UK and over in Rio. The sailing regatta will be one of the most anticipated events for British spectators with expectations of a good medal haul. Having been top of the medal sailing table at the last four Olympic Games both the team and fans will want to make it five in a row. This might be a pressure for the team, but also provides an incentive to perform to the best of their ability.
RS:X Men and women’s windsurfer. Replacing the Mistral, the NeilPryde RS:X was the new windsurfing equipment used at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Paralympic classes 2.4mR One-person keelboat. 2012: Gold for Helen Lucas SKUD18 Double-handed keelboat – open. It made its first appearance at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. 2012: Bronze for Alexandra Rickham/ Niki Birrell Sonar Three-person keelboat – open. The Sonar has been sailed in the Paralympics since sailing was included as a Paralympic sport in 2000.

BRITISH SAILING TEAM The team is managed by the Royal Yachting Association and is made up of approximately 80 sailors. The team in the Olympic and Paralympic classes consists of two squads of sailors – the Podium Squad and Podium Potential Squad. They take part in regattas around the world, including World and European Championships and the ISAF Sailing World Cup series. Each win brings them closer to being selected for Team GB or ParalympicsGB. The first members of Team GB for 2016 were announced in September and, fittingly, they were sailors. The eight athletes have already won four Olympic medals and seven World Championship titles between them, and so the sailing prospects in Rio are looking good. n n n n n n

moment on our journey to next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. As one of our most successful medalwinning sports it is fitting that sailing kick-off our Rio 2016 team announcements.” However, another athlete was announced even earlier. Back in April Paralympic sailing champion Helena Lucas became the first GB athlete selected for Rio. Helena was the first British sailor to win a Paralympic medal since the sport became a full-time part of the Paralympic programme in 2000 when she won gold in the 2.4mR class in 2012. British Sailing Team Manager Stephen Park believes his charges are wellplaced to meet the challenges of Rio 2016. Stephen said: “We’ve got plenty of talent within the team – sailors who really have put in some good performances over recent weeks, months and years, and in addition we have a good mix of some younger sailors coming through, some new first time Olympians and indeed some older hands. I am sure that this mix of age, experience, youth and enthusiasm is going to help create a great team atmosphere and be good for our 2016 performance.”

ExpErts’ forum GETTING THE BEST FROM YOUR SAILS
New year sails As we head into 2016 Matt Atkins, Director at Kemp Sails, explains why making your sails last is important - but so too is using them efficiently. Here he lists a few of the basics you need to know.
GeNoas n Make sure the sheet leads are in the right position on the track. As a rule of thumb, the sheet’s angle should bisect the clew. With the lead too far aft, the leech will be slack when the foot’s tight. Too far forward, and the leech will be hard against the spreaders while the foot is still some way off the bottom of the shrouds. n Use the telltales. They will indicate whether the lead is correct. If the top windward telltale breaks first, the lead is too far aft. If the bottom one goes first, move the lead forward. Ideally, the windward telltales all the way down the luff should break (stop streaming) simultaneously when you luff gently into the wind with the sheet in tight. n Move the sheet lead forward when you reef the sail. As you reef a roller Genoa, the clew moves up and forward - so you will need to move the lead forward to
maintain the correct sheeting angle. If you have rolled the telltales up in the sail, you can add extra sets at known reef positions. Otherwise, watch the sail - the lead needs to be moved forward if you lose drive at the top of the luff before the bottom. n Do not forget forestay tension. If your backstay is too slack (or the cap shrouds on a fractional rig) your Genoa will be too full - the main symptoms are excessive heel and loss of pointing ability. Try tightening the rigging. Watch the halyard tension too, in light winds you should not have any vertical creases, but as the wind builds you will need a tighter luff. When you have established the right tension for average conditions, mark across the headfoil and luff tape a few feet above the tack. That way, when the marks come into line, you are at the right point to start adjusting for more or less wind if necessary.
ALL AT SEA DECEMBER 2015
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. ProloNGiNG sail life - GeNeral TiPs n With tapered battens, make sure you insert the thin end into the pocket first. n Do not let sails flog - Use your Leech and Foot Lines. Letting your sails flap in the wind is one of the quickest ways of ruining their condition and shape. n Wash the salt out of sails. Salt is abrasive and will wear away at both the fabric and stitching. It also attracts moisture, which can quickly lead to the growth of mould and mildew. n Do not put sails away wet for long periods of time. n Do not scrunch sails up - Flake (fold) them along the foot without the battens in and store straight and flat. MaiNsails n Keep the top telltale streaming. If it is not, your leech is too tight - ease the mainsheet and/or kicking strap. n When sailing to windward, keep the boom central until weather helm builds up. The mainsail’s leech is primarily responsible for making the boat point upwind - so keep it working. As a general rule, this means keeping the boom fairly central until the boat starts protesting through the helm, heeling too much or losing speed. Then you will need to start easing the traveller or, if you do not have a traveller, ease the sheet but make sure the kicking strap is reasonably tight. n Do not over-sheet. This applies to both genoas and mainsails. If the Genoa’s too tight, it will back-wind the main and you will pull the main in to compensate, resulting in too much weather helm, heel and loss of speed.
n Keep them clean. n Protect them from the sun (make sure your cover fits, is secure and covers the sail completely). Do not leave roller Genoas on the headfoil if you are not using the boat for a while - take them down and stow them below. n Roll the headsail up tightly, so the wind cannot catch it (ideally over wind the sheets around the sail twice and secure both sheets and furling Line). n Protect sails from chafe -beware split pins and tape them up. n Do not leave your sails under maximum tensions. Slacken halyards on roller reefing genoas when leaving the boat and ease the mainsail’s clew outhaul. n Use the Cunningham. It will help flatten the sail, move the draft forward and open the leech in stronger winds. n For easier mainsail reefing, mark the halyard at the point where you can hook the reef ring over the tack horn. This saves extra trips along the deck. Ensuring the Tack is properly secured avoids Luff damage when winding in the Leech Reef. If you are experiencing problems with sail trim, call or email Kemp Sails - ideally with a picture of the issue. n www.kempsails.com n info@kempsails.com n Wareham Sail Loft: 01929 554308 n Gosport Sales & Service: 02392 808717

GAc pindar is the official logistics provider for the extreme Sailing Series, Volvo Ocean Race and a familiar name on the international race circuit.
Q&A WITH ANDREW PINDAR, TEAM PRINCIPAL AT LOGISTICS PROVIDER GAC PINDAR
WHAT IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
WHAT SAILING EVENTS DOES GAC PINDAR PROVIDE THE LOGISTICS FOR?
We have been the official logistics provider to Extreme Sailing Series since 2011 and hope to be so for many years to come. Each year we move 20 or so containers loaded with boats, RIBs, spares, racecourse markers and event paraphernalia to the eight or more event locations around the world. We were the official logistics provider for the last Volvo Ocean Race. Getting a 30m mast replacement mast flown half way round the world so that Dongfeng could re-enter the race was

one of the more interesting challenges! Besides that we have worked for many others including the World Match Racing Tour, the Transat Jacques Vabre, some ISAF events and hundreds of individual moves.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO SAILING?
I was lucky to have been born in the pretty seaside town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and so had water on the doorstep, but in reality it was more that my life long friend Robin Gray came from a mad keen boating family and so I got dragged along on water ski boats through to Shearwater catamarans. Then, as a teenager, my parents bought a Mirror dinghy for us all to learn to sail in. We kept 26299 down at Filey Sailing Club where both Robin and I had lessons on a Wayfarer.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE.
GAC Pindar is formed from a collaboration between GAC, an international shipping and logistics business, and my company Pindar Sailing Partners. I am responsible for maintaining and building our presence in the sector worldwide and for securing business, be that the Volvo Ocean Race or getting a 470 dinghy from Japan to Abu Dhabi. Part of my role is to promote what we do through the ongoing sponsorships of World Champion Match Racer Ian Williams and record breaking quadriplegic sailor Hilary Lister.
DO YOU STILL HAVE ANY AMBITIONS? I have promised myself a Transatlantic crossing, though must admit I would like to do so on a yacht with a good crew, a decent galley and comfortable bunks, the privations of Volvo Ocean Race sailors and the likes are no longer for me….
It has to be sponsoring and following Emma Richards’ circumnavigation of the world in the 2002/2003 Around Alone Race and being there with my pal Robin Gray, who managed the project, to welcome her over the finish line in Newport, Rhode Island. The race was a life changer for all of us and will remain with me forever.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?
This is a sport, which is accessible to any age, any ability and any pocket. It is a sport for recreation, for pleasure and if you want, for competition. But it is also a place to work and from which lifetime opportunities can arise. If you have not done so yet, call up or drop by the fantastic BAR building in Portsmouth. The guys and girls, from Sir Ben Ainslie to Jo Grindley and all the others there, are doing something very special for the whole business of sailing in Britain. Or call in at the RYA in Hamble where one of Sarah Treseder’s team will tell you how to get involved or even step into the ISAF offices at the end of Town Quay and see what Peter Sowrey and others are doing for sailing the world over. THEN AND NOW
All AT SEA DECEMBER 2015
Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.
Christmas sails... BOATING ARCHIVE
The latest in sailcloth technology can now produce a sail that is completely transparent. Image: David Henshall
Tempted by the end of year discounts? Many sailors will be starting the 2016 season with new sails, but what is the history behind this kit?
As the festival of Christmas becomes ever more commercialized, the lead in to 25 December and the fortnight or so that follows are all about getting either a bargain or using the post Xmas sales to get the things you might otherwise not be able to afford. sailors are no different to any other discerning shoppers apart from the fact that the Christmas sales could equally be the Christmas sails! All of the major sail lofts are aiming to persuade us to upgrade our rigs by offering very generous end of year discounts. But what exactly Is the deal on sails, how many of us really understand the nature of the incredible technology that we now look at up the mast and promptly take for granted. The 1946 Merlin ‘Gently’ using a traditional suit of cotton sails. Image: Ranelagh Sailing Club
SAILING INTO HISTORY
The addition of a sail to a boat is almost as old as civilisation itself, with archaeological excavations in what was Mesopotamia turning up evidence of sails as far back as 5,000 years BC. By the time of the Egyptians, the Phoenicians and Greeks the use of sailing vessels to drive the expansion of trade routes was well established. The earliest sails had used whatever materials could be collected locally, but as the sophistication of boats grew, so did the need to make the sail work more efficiently. Key to this was the use of the silky fibres from the stem of the flax plant, which could be woven into linen.
Compare this Merlin mainsail with the one shown on Gently. The latest in hi-tec sails has used computer technology to lay carbon fibre tapes along the lines of stress in the sail. Image: David Henshall
so successful was linen as a material for sail making that it would become the power source that drove ships on the exploration of the world. However, flax based linen was not the only material in use as cotton was being increasingly woven on an industrial basis. However, the new material highlighted the growing technology and understanding of cloth dynamics in the world of sail making. Cotton from the colonies might be heavily traded but it was not the answer that ships needed. The preference there was for Egyptian cotton, which by virtue of being a slower growing plant provided longer fibres and thus a more stable cloth. Apart from a few classic boats, cotton is no longer used in sail making, but even today ‘Egyptian Cotton’ is seen almost as a benchmark of quality when the material is used for soft furnishings.
ARRIVAL OF NYLON
sail had already long given way to steam when the next big revolution in cloth technology would take place. In the mid-1930s thread manufacture moved from the fields of agriculture into the laboratories of the UsA with the development of the new wonder material ‘nylon’. Just a few years on there was a huge demand for a whole range of cloths to feed the needs of the WW II war machine and synthetic cloth would experience a sudden leap forward in development. As an example, the expansion of air forces resulted in the demands for silk to make parachutes vastly exceeding supply. It would be a further development of nylon that would end up being a real lifesaver for many airmen. Of course, the term ‘nylon’ also came to represent the wonder material for ladies hosiery, with the term ‘nylons’ being the sought after item of war time clothing. With its lightness and low stretch properties, come the post war period and the boom in leisure sailing synthetic clothes would soon find their way into sail making. Nylon worked well as a cloth
for spinnakers, but it was another of the new materials, this time one developed in the UK, that would make its mark in the making of ‘white sails’.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Terylene was the answer to the sailors’ – and the sailmakers’ - prayers for as a fibre it retained its characteristics even when wet. It did not absorb water, dried quickly and could be manufactured to very close tolerances, allowing far greater accuracy in the construction of a sail. Developments of woven cloth continued apace and soon the woven cloth was being covered in resin before being passed through a set of rollers. The result is that wonderfully smooth finish to sailcloth that has that distinctive ‘crackle’ of a new sail. Even as the new materials, known as Dacron, continued their development, work was also underway to produce sails from film materials, rather than a woven cloth. A sail can be subjected to a great deal of harsh treatment once hoisted up the mast and it was soon found that a lightweight scrim cloth, backed on either side by a wafer thin layer of Mylar could produce sails of extraordinary strength for their lightness. Development continues apace with Kevlar and carbon fibre scrims now being used, along with sails where the scrim is replaced by lines of carbon fibre along the load lines of the sail. In the meantime, however, woven cloth continues to evolve, with new developments offering the sailor even better sails than before. For those sailors hoping that santa will bring them that extra special Xmas gift that comes in a sail bag, suppliers Bainbridge are launching their new woven cloth, HsXv, that will offer higher performance from even lower stretch, whilst at the same time, offering increased longevity. They may not fit under the Christmas tree but these really are Christmas sails in the Christmas sales. Festive greetings to you all from the All at sea Archive page.

GREEN FOCUS JAne SwAn
The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms. Southampton University are taking on the Challenge
Challenging times University sailing clubs from across the UK are taking part in the first ever University Sailing Sustainability Challenge, set up by The Green Blue.
ThE idea was sparked at the British Association for Sustainable Sport conference held at the Millennium Stadium Cardiff in 2014, where The Green Blue (a joint environment programme created by the RYA and British Marine) came across the Global Athletes programme. Global Athletes, run from the University of Gloucestershire, uses sport as a vehicle for positive change and encourages students to embrace sustainability challenges in their everyday lives at university. The Green Blue saw this as a great model to extend to university sailing clubs by challenging students to improve environmental sustainability within their sailing teams and clubs. Students love a challenge so The Green Blue created a three tier competition with a prize draw
incentive and invited university clubs to sign up. From the 46 university sailing clubs in the UK, ten have now stepped forward including Plymouth, Bournemouth, Southampton, Oxford, Manchester, York, Newcastle, Leeds, Glasgow and Strathclyde. The challenge will see the university sailing clubs competing to undertake a series of sustainable actions throughout the academic year in order to win prizes and demonstrate to the rest of the boating community how achievable sustainable boating can be.
SUSTAINABLE ACTIONS Sustainable actions include: ensuring their sailing venues have a spill kit available to clean up any accidental spills when boaters are handling oil and fuel, ensuring members use re-usable water bottles (rather than single use plastic bottles) during training sessions and events to reduce waste and making sure their boats, trailers and equipment are checked, cleaned and dried to minimise the spread of invasive non-native species around UK waters. Southampton University Sailing Club’s Commodore, Tom harrison said: “As soon as we heard about The Green Blue’s new challenge we were very keen to get involved. “This is a great opportunity for our sailing club members to learn how to be more sustainable and show other boaters how it can be done. I strongly believe that our sport can do even more to be sustainable and ensure our sailing environment is clean and safe for generations to come.”

The response has been brilliant and The Green Blue is very excited to have such an enthusiastic and competitive group of sailing students on board helping to promote sustainable boating. AWARD LEVELS Participating clubs have to complete three different award levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold - by 27 March
2016. Each award level has a number of sustainable actions that need to be completed and evidenced in order to be entered into three prize draws to win £100, £250 and £500 respectively. All three prize draw winners will be invited to attend the BUCS Team Racing Championships in April 2016 to be awarded their prizes and certificates for their effort and achievements. James is not exactly new to the sport of sailing and has been on the water in various different boats for the last 19 years, moving to the International Moth during 2013. He now works at Grafham Water Centre as one of their Chief Instructors, heading up a team of almost 30 instructing staff.

A HOME BUILD All this was done in my small spare room, which is just big enough to have the hull in. When more space was needed the living room was utilised too. Another useful tool in the house was the oven to post cure lots of the smaller carbon parts. Many hours were spent aligning the wing socket and kingpost. If you get those wrong the boat will end up looking wonky. The whole build generally went very well. However, there was a point early on in the process when the vacuum bag was struggling to seal properly and this took some time to correct. But with many long days and late nights she was built and ready. Come the day of the launch - a couple of weeks later than the unrealistic deadline that I set myself - we hit the water not knowing how well she would work. I jumped on, sheeted in and to my surprise within 200 yards of the beach we were up and fully foiling and cruising at 16 knots pushing to 23 on the first trip out.
Grafham Water Centre’s Chief Instructor, James Sainsbury, is extremely passionate about sailing the International Moth, so much so that he decided to build his own Moth. James finally completed his boat build after ten long months.

WHAT’S HAPPENING ArouNd THE uK’S MArINAS
sOuTH cOAsT cruIsING
You may have spotted Dennis James cruising around the Solent. Since his retirement Dennis has been making the most of owning his motorboat and loves the community feel that comes with ownership. We enjoy the shops and restaurants at the marina. Then when we want to go into Southampton there is a handy ferry service that runs from hythe right into the centre.
Dennis James on board Jenelda II
I have always loved boats and since I retired I have really had the time to enjoy life out on the water. I am a berth holder at MDL’s hythe Marina village in Southampton and love the lifestyle that owning a boat brings.
JENELDA II I have loved boating for many years. I bought my first boat, Jenelda, at the age of 31 and I currently have a 38ft Doral elegante motorboat, Jenelda II. They are manufactured in Canada to a very high specification and are relatively rare here in the UK. It is a truly beautiful boat. She is so well crafted and easy to handle that it is a joy and a pleasure to take her out. Jenelda II can go over 30 knots but we tend to cruise at around 20 knots.
WEEkEND cruIsEs My wife, Brenda, and I regularly take trips around the Solent and along the South Coast, and berthing at hythe Marina village is ideal for this. having a berth with MDL means we can hop from one marina to the next and most weekends we will take a gentle cruise down to Port hamble, stopping for lunch at Banana Wharf and then cruising back to hythe. The Solent is such a beautiful place to go boating and we enjoy relaxing and taking it all in. It is a fantastic way to spend a few days. In the past we have taken trips to Cherbourg and the Channel Islands in convoy with other boats. We found it much more fun to go on a trip as part of a group
rather than on our own and really enjoyed our little adventures. It only took us about three-and-a-half hours to France, which was just the right length for us to enjoy.
Solent and it is the perfect place to enjoy a nice glass of scotch at the end of a long day. www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/mdl-hythemarina-village
BAck AT THE mArINA When I am not on the water in the Solent, you will find me at the marina. I spend an hour or so every day giving the boat a good polish and making sure she is in tip top condition for the weekend. I do not have to worry about the safety and security of Jenelda II. There are other benefits from marina berthing here like fuel at cost and discounted services. everyone is so lovely at the marina and we have an absolute whale of a time – there is a real community feel to the place. I am sure we have the best pontoon in the
Dennis enjoys regular take trips around the Solent and along the South Coast.

Ocean Village Marina – a remarkable transformation into one of the most desirable home ports in the world.
OCEAN Village Marina boasts a fantastic location situated in the heart of Southampton water with easy access to the cruising waters of the Solent and the Channel. Owned by MDL Marinas, Ocean Village is one of the world’s most prestigious and renowned marinas. Initially the site of Southampton’s first working docks, the outer dock opened in 1842 and the area was redeveloped and officially opened in 1986. The basin, formerly used for commercial ships, is deep enough to offer mooring facilities for tall ships and super yachts up to 90m. It also offers easy links to Southampton train station and airport –
making it a welcome home and visiting port for thousands of boaters each year. Ocean Village Marina is famous for hosting the start and finish of a number of global yacht races and benefits from being overlooked by the prestigious Royal Southampton Yacht Club. Set to become one of the main leisure destinations in Southampton, Ocean Village is transforming into one of the most desired marina locations for annual berth holders and visitors. In 2017, the finished waterfront location will also boast a £50m luxury spa hotel complex, the tallest residential building in the city and new restaurants and retail openings.
FACILITIES
THERE are plentiful facilities for berth holders and visitors including shower/washing. Nearby Shamrock Quay offers dry stack storage and annual berth holders can enjoy discounted boat yard services at Shamrock Quay and Saxon Wharf. During the course of the year the marina team also organises many social events at the marina. These have included a ‘Touch of Wimbledon’ event with champagne and strawberries and a Sun and Sangria event – all great fun and well attended by berth holders. Ocean Village Marina offers the perfect place to unwind before you head out to see the sights of Southampton.

LUXURY DEVELOPMENT
OVER the past 10 years Ocean Village has seen numerous phases of redevelopment. Most recent is the addition of residential complexes including the Admirals Quay development – the tallest and one of the most impressive apartment and commercial developments. Other landmark buildings include an award-winning multi storey car park designed to serve the redeveloped Ocean Village Estate, and the Ocean Village Innovation Centre, which has provided quality office space for a number of businesses. There are some really exciting developments taking shape at Ocean Village Marina as the multimillion pound redevelopment in Southampton moves into its final phase. Central to the development is a luxury superyacht inspired five-star hotel, which is set to open in 2017. The hotel will extend out into the marina and will benefit not only seafaring guests but visitors to the waterfront destination too. This new development will feature a spa, champagne bar and rooftop restaurant with stunning views, whilst also bringing a number of new brands

THINGS TO DO to the city with retail openings and award-winning new restaurants. Dean Smith, Operations and Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, said: “We are delighted that construction work has begun on what promises to be an incredible new hotel. This exciting new luxury development is the city’s only luxury five-star hotel and will generate considerable benefits for the area upon its completion. “Alongside our world-class marina and the new Admirals
Quay development, the hotel will represent another major step towards establishing Ocean Village as Southampton’s premier waterfront destination.” Once completed Ocean Village will be Southampton’s most vibrant waterfront destination, with the development creating a world class, modern setting where the city’s residents, visitors and the marina customers can come to enjoy shopping and dining in a fantastic marina setting.
SOUTHAMPTON is a beautiful city to explore. A sociable marina, with a variety of entertainment on your doorstep, it is not only one of the premier venues for sailing and watersports, but it is also a perfect location for exploring the city lights, the New Forest National Park and the Isle of Wight. Just some of the highlights of things to do and see in Southampton include: ■ Close to home - One of the new openings at Ocean Village is the Maritimo Lounge, which has enjoyed a £550,000 investment. It is the perfect location to unwind and socialise. It has an eclectic and vibrant interior with amazing views of the marina. For evening entertainment you have the choice of Cineworld or Harbour Lights, showing new releases or a selection of old time favourites. ■ Fabulous food and entertainment – there is an endless choice of restaurants in Southampton and visitors will be spoilt for choice whether dining al fresco by the water at Banana Wharf
BERTHING & STORAGE
As Europe’s leading marina operator, MDL Marinas is proud to offer the most comprehensive berthing package in the marketplace. The Freedom Berthing package gives owners far more than a superb berth and marina facilities, it is a passport to extra rewards, benefits and savings, such as complimentary stays at over 100 other marinas both in the UK and Europe, discounts on boatyard services and fuel at cost.
ACCESS
PROCEED up Southampton Water keeping clear of all commercial shipping. At Weston Shelf green buoy, near the junction of the Rivers Itchen and Test, keep to starboard up the Itchen. Ocean Village is about one mile further north to port, opposite the old Vosper Thorneycroft yard and just short of the Itchen Bridge. Call on VHF Ch 80 or by mobile for a vacant berth.
CRUISING
FOR Ocean Village’s seafaring guests, the marina offers a great location for all adventurers. The Isle of Wight is just south of the marina and the famous yacht haven of Cowes a few miles away. Other popular day cruising locations include the Beaulieu River
or Lymington – both perfect settings for day trips. For those who fancy taking advantage of MDL’s network of nearby marinas you can travel south towards Hamble Point Marina or up the picturesque river towards Mercury Yacht Harbour and Port Hamble. There is also Hythe Marina, a picturesque marina across the water from Ocean Village or just around the corner there is Shamrock Quay and Saxon Wharf – you will be spoilt for choice. Slightly further afield, the south of England offers many fantastic places to visit for the weekend, with a number of MDL marinas including Northney Marina and Sparkes Marina in Chichester and Cobb’s Quay Marina in Poole Harbour, the world’s second largest natural harbour. Cruising to Cherbourg, the Channel
Islands and the Brittany coastline are within easy distance from Ocean Village Marina and annual berth holders can enjoy Freedom Berthing – giving access to complimentary stays at over 90 marinas across the UK and Europe. Many of MDL’s berth holders toured northwest France last summer with no additional berthing costs. Berth holders can also take part in MDL Marinas’ ‘Cruise in Company’ events, which give boat owners the fantastic opportunity to take part in organised cruises with other berth holders. MDL Marinas organises a number of cruises each year including trips up the River Medina from Cowes to the Folly pub ‘A Jolly to the Folly’, a lovely pub come restaurant set on the water’s edge where you can moor up and take the Folly water taxi to shore.

Sushi. ■ The Old Town and Cultural Quarter – areas of significant cultural attractions including the Mayflower Theatre and the SeaCity Museum. The city is also home to the second largest still standing medieval walls in England. ■ Southampton Boat Show – held annually in September since 1968 with over 600 exhibitors. The event runs for 10 days at Mayflower Park on the city’s waterfront. ■ Classics on the Quay – Shamrock Quay Marina hosts a monthly ‘Classics on the Quay’ event and regularly attracts over 50 classic cars to the marina.
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS “I have been a berth holder at MDL’s Ocean Village Marina in Southampton for three years. There always seems to be something going on at the marina, which I love. There is a real buzz around and everyone is always very friendly; we really enjoy chatting to other berth holders along the pontoon. “The Ocean Village team often stop by with a trolley of Pimms or a tray of bacon baps for all the berth holders to enjoy – it is little touches like this that make the marina really special. “We often take advantage of MDL’s Freedom Berthing package, which allows berth holders to enjoy complimentary stays at any of MDL’s marinas in the UK or abroad. Last year we berthed our boat on the River Hamble for two months, firstly at Port Hamble and then at Hamble Point so we could enjoy the Round the Island Race and Cowes Week.” Gary Pearson - Bizzy Bee, 8.5m

MDL TEAM COMPLETES 100-MILE FUNDRAISING CYCLE FOR CHILDREN IN NEED The team at MDL Marinas’ head office pulled out all the stops last Friday 13th November as they embarked on an epic static cycling challenge, as part of the team’s efforts to raise money for Children in Need. Throughout the day, a 15-strong staff relay team cycled in a non-stop bikeathon, riding the 100 mile round trip from MDL’s Hamble Point Marina all the way to Cobb’s Quay Marina in Poole and back on a static exercise bike. In exchange for donations to the charity, MDL staff were also able to nominate members of the cycling team to wear comedy wigs and glasses – or to really work up a sweat by cycling extra hard. The day was a great success with team members from all departments of MDL getting involved including MDL’s Operations and Marketing Director, Dean Smith, who took part in the bikeathon in his wetsuit thanks to nominations and donations from his team members. Although it wasn’t all
plain sailing, the team worked so hard that they pedalled their static bike out of service with only 20 miles to go before the finish line. Maxine Lane, Senior Marketing Manager at MDL, explains: “Our bike gave up before us! After 80 miles our bike said ‘NO MORE!’ We had come that far and we were determined to finish. So we got on Gumtree and bought a new one, got it back to our office and managed to complete the challenge!” The MDL team also showcased their baking talents in support of Children in Need, as they entered their best creations in the MDL Bake Off. MDL’s Hamble Point Marina also hosted a cake sale at its on-site waterfront bar and restaurant, The Ketch Rigger. All 18 MDL marinas took part in fundraising activities for Children in Need, staff dressed up for the day and donated a 50p ‘fine’ if they didn’t include something spotty in their outfits. At Brixham Marina, two team
members dressed up as their favourite superheroes for the day to help raise funds. Maxine said: “We all had such a fantastic day, it was great to see everyone getting involved and doing their bit. We managed to raise over £400 before the end of the day and we’re hoping that we can reach the £500 target this week. Children in Need is such a worthy cause and we’re fully behind their aim to ensure every child in the UK has a safe, happy and secure childhood. For the past 30 years, we’ve also worked with Ocean Youth Trust South to give disadvantaged children amazing sailing adventures that will help them build valuable skills. It’s really important to us that we get involved in initiatives like these.” You can help support the MDL Bikeathon and Children in Need by donating online at https://www. justgiving.com/MDL-MarinasCIN/

Important maintenance work at Whitehaven Harbour Up until 1998 Whitehaven Harbour was a tidally restricted port. As a result, vessels had to plan their arrival time to coincide with high water. With no physical barrier to the Irish Sea, Whitehaven was also vulnerable to frequent flooding of surrounding roads and property. The construction of the Sea Lock served two purposes. The heavy gates provided a substantial physical barrier to the often wild Irish Sea and also allowed the water level in the harbour to be controlled so vessels could remain afloat at all states of the tide. In addition the town was no longer at risk from flooding. Regular maintenance of these gates is vital and so each year the lock structure undergoes a period of
inspection and maintenance. Access through the lock is halted while both sets of gates are closed and the water pumped out. This allows our staff to access the bearings and hydraulic rams. Not surprisingly this and any repairs required are expensive but in the knowledge that the structure keeps the town and harbour safe, it’s a worthwhile investment and operation.

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Every diligent skipper should be doing routine maintenance. But are you doing it right? The RYA spoke to Toby Gran, Fleet Manager at RYA member partners, Sunsail Events, for his top tips on keeping things ticking over and staying safe.
Safety is paramount and so ensure all areas of your boat are checked over
So when you are giving your boat the regular once-over, what should you be taking into consideration to keep her sailing smoothly and safely? It is the old cliché but prevention is better than cure; be proactive in your preventative maintenance as opposed to being reactive when something fails.
While your boat is out of the water take the opportunity to carry out essential maintenance
Safety should always be at the forefront of our minds and our agenda. From an engineering point of view there are a number of simple things you should be doing as a matter of course. Make sure you do regular oil and coolant and filter changes and ensure service intervals are met. In addition confirm that the cooling system is functioning correctly including checking impeller and sea strainers are working effectively and are clear. Inspect and service your steering mechanisms to stay responsive, reliable and safe.
to be able to see when something does not look as it should do. Carry out regular visual checks for signs of problems like leaks, rusting and corrosion. They can often suggest a bigger underlying problem that could compromise the safety of your boat, so do not dismiss the symptoms as ‘one of those things’ until you know the cause. A bit of rust may be common, but it is something that is only going to get worse. Inspect gas supply and safety features including, if you have them, carbon monoxide and/or fire alarms. Also on the safety front inspect and service all sea cocks, bilge pumps, firefighting equipment, lifejackets, life rafts and the flares.
VISUAL CHECKS
You know your boat better than anyone else, so you do not have to be an expert
SAILING ELECTRONICS FOR CRUISING AND RACING
On the bosun side check the sails, halyards, sheets and running rigging and ensure all hatches and openings can be closed firmly and securely. Ensure that all furling gear, winches and windlasses function and are maintained correctly, and that all navigation gear and lights are working and doing their job. Also always try to rinse boat down as far as possible with freshwater when back in the marina to reduce equipment corrosion and the effects of salt. Most of this is common sense, but taking the time to do effective and regular checks can make a huge difference in decreasing the risk of something breaking at sea, putting your boat and crew at risk, but also in size of the hole in your wallet come winter maintenance time. www.rya.org.uk

PEOPLE often think about ‘sorting their boat out’ in the winter time and it is only natural that with many boats coming out of the water at this time of year it is when a lot of the ‘big’ jobs get done. However, you can have a significant impact on how much big, and potentially expensive, repair work you need to undertake with your boat out of the water by staying on top of the little jobs throughout the season. Sailing, by its very nature, sees boats exposed to some pretty harsh treatment; salt is no-one’s friend, rigging and countless other parts are pushed to their load limits and water has a nasty habit of getting into, and hiding in, places where it causes issues.

For a party kick-starter try the Campari cocktail
FIRST – the fizz. While price is generally an indicator of quality wine making and a consequence of the years of ageing, it may not, it seems, be a definitive indicator of tastiness. So says the Good Housekeeping Institute in its Christmas Food 2015 report. This blind-test exercise by 20 experts covered Christmas food and drink staples including, of interest to us, Champagne and Prosecco. Based purely on taste remember, the Champagne winner was Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Brut by Philizot, also revealed as a ‘price surprise’ bargain at £9.97 for a 75cl bottle. The tasting notes list apple, a slight golden hue, small bubbles and a crisp light flavour. Also in the top echelon were Faubert Brut from Ocado (£19.99) and Waitrose Blanc de Noirs Brut (£21.99). The GHI Prosecco winner was San Leo Brut, £10.49 at Waitrose and already tested by my tasting team and declared nicely dry and authentic. Of note, though, in third place was Aldi’s Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante (meaning fully sparkling) DOCG (the official Italian wine Prosecco classification) at only £7.49. At this price it can be the mainstay of a sailing club party, as a straight apéritif or mixed for cocktails. Try it with peach juice for a pretty and docile Bellini cocktail. For a party kick-starter try a Negroni-style cocktail - mix in the glass ice, a single measure of Campari (25 per cent abv) and twice as much Prosecco (11 per cent abv, so a fortifier not a reducer). It has a vibrant red colour and spicy taste and is a bit stronger than the average gin and tonic. Of course, a different tasting panel of sailors might come up with a different selection, blind or otherwise, but the message from the GHI selection is that setting aside our prejudices and having a

good look at what is on offer in the so-called priceled supermarkets can make a significant difference to the seasonal festivities bill.
RED OR WHITE WITH TURKEY?
Roast turkey has a relatively mild taste with much of the flavour on the plate coming from the accompaniments, which the wine choice should take into account. Chipolata sausages can be spicy while stuffings mix savoury with a range of flavours and cranberry sauce is rich and fruity. A full-bodied, well-aged red wine is not the best partner for this delicious mélange. Better

to choose a young and fruity wine low in tannins. A 2014 Beaujolais Villages (see AAS November 2015) or Pinot Noir – Aldi has a Vignobles Roussellet at just £4.39 for 75cl (12.5 per cent abv). For a white wine option, several work well depending on your palette, especially chardonnays and sauvignon blancs or, for a special treat, a Viognier. I found a Macon-Villages Chardonnay at Waitrose at £8.99 and a Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc for just £4.99 at Aldi. Whatever you choose, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
