CHAMPIONS BRITS CROWNED IN BERMUDA BRITAIN’S MOST READ WATERFRONT NEWSPAPER

After the disappointment of seeing Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team exit the America’s Cup in the semi-finals, there were huge celebrations when Britain’s youth America’s Cup sailors from the Land Rover BAR Academy were crowned 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Champions in Bermuda after a dramatic final that saw them beat defending champions NZL Sailing Team by just two points. YOUNG BRITS WIN IN DRAMATIC STYLE Land Rover BAR Academy dominated the first day of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Finals. All images: Harry KH / Land Rover BAR

FROM PAGE 1 Despite seeing Land Rover BAR beaten in the America’s Cup semi-finals, Land Rover BAR Academy displayed the strength and determination of champions to not only go on to win the 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, but to do it in style. After winning the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Britain’s Land Rover BAR was one of the favourites heading into the America’s Cup in Bermuda. However, things did not go according to plan for Sir Ben Ainslie’s team and, after coming third in the Qualifiers, they ultimately went out to the eventual victors, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the Challenger Playoffs Semi-Final. ORACLE TEAM USA won the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers with Emirates Team New Zealand finishing second, one point behind the Americans. However, with ORACLE TEAM USA’s place in the America’s Cup Match already assured as the defenders of the ‘Auld Mug’, the New Zealand team was given the opportunity to select their opposition in the Challenger Playoffs semi-finals, a firstto-five-points contest. They chose to take on Land Rover BAR, but things did not go well for the Brits

ice. On days like today it is the ultimate team sport.” Having gone on to get the scorecard to 4-2, and given themselves a glimmer of hope of progressing, ETNZ sealed the British team’s fate by reaching the magic five wins to progress to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs Finals. Land Rover BAR was heading back to Britain without the America’s Cup they were so determined to take home. “I could not be prouder of the team. It has been an amazing journey for us,” said Sir Ben Ainslie. Turning his attention to the future, Sir Ben revealed that Land Rover BAR will be back for the next instalment of the America’s Cup after agreeing deals with their major partners. “To have that commitment already in place is a massive bonus for everyone and to be able to start our preparations for the next campaign already means we will come back that much stronger. “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us back home in the United Kingdom and here in Bermuda. We are a very proud British team and we will be back in the America’s Cup.”

In the final press conference of the 35th America’s Cup, Grant Dalton, CEO of ETNZ, announced that the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has accepted the challenge of Circolo della Vela Sicilia, who will be the Challenger of Record for the 36th America’s Cup and will be represented by Luna Rossa. Peter Burling said: “We are just blown away. We came here to win the America’s Cup and right now we are taking the America’s Cup back home to New Zealand.” With Land Rover BAR out, attention turned to the Land Rover BAR Academy competing in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, racing the foiling, wingsail AC45F used throughout the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series 2015 and 2016. The Land Rover BAR Academy looked strong in practice, and this was repeated in the Qualifiers where the team achieved two wins and two second places in six races to progress to the finals along with seven other teams including TeamBDA, the relatively inexperienced local favourites. Day one of the Finals belonged to Land Rover BAR Academy who sat on top of the leaderboard heading into the final day after two second places and a first place in the three races. Land Rover BAR Academy Skipper Rob Bunce summed up the team’s performance, saying: “It is the perfect start we were looking for and we are all delighted with our level of consistency.” However the following day NZL Sailing Team looked to have successfully retained their crown after claiming a perfect set of race results with three consecutive victories while Land Rover BAR Academy endured a difficult afternoon.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us back home in the United Kingdom and here in Bermuda. We are a very proud British team and we will be back in the America’s Cup.”

right from the first race. A promising start on the first two legs of race one saw Land Rover BAR matching ETNZ to gate two, but as they rounded the leeward gate they suffered a failure in the wing forcing the team to retire. The team returned to their base to try and swop out the wing before the next race, but it was impossible and Land Rover BAR were forced to concede a second point for the day. In the next race ETNZ only just made the start after damage sustained to their

Then, with the New Zealanders set to celebrate on board their boat, incredible late drama conspired against the reigning champions. Land Rover BAR Academy clawed their way up to second on the final leg to win the trophy. Amongst the winning team were strategist Annabel Vose, the only female sailor in the fleet, and Neil Hunter, the only sailor to compete in both the America’s Cup and the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Land Rover BAR Team Principal and Skipper, Ben Ainslie said:“We could not be prouder of the Land Rover BAR Academy winning the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. All their hard work, commitment and dedication over the past 18 months has really come together on the water here in Bermuda.” With little time to celebrate, though, the young Land Rover BAR Academy headed to Maderia to compete in the Extreme Sailing Series Act 3. www.landroverbar.com/academy www.landroverbar.com

wing after docking out. Despite the British team winning the start in the first race and leading they got low on oil which enabled ETNZ to take the win. This was followed by the New Zealand team suffering a dramatic capsize, with the race subsequently being awarded to Land Rover BAR. Sir Ben Ainslie said: “It was an amazing day of sailing. Certainly the most exciting and exhilarating racing I have ever been involved in, in my life. I liken it to skiing on

Peter Burling’s ETNZ squad went on to earn a rematch against ORACLE TEAM USA for the 35th America’s Cup with a convincing victory (5-2) over Artemis Racing in the Challenger Playoffs. In 2013, in San Francisco, ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill led his team to one of the greatest comebacks in sport, racing back from a 1-8 deficit to win 9-8 over ETNZ. But Peter Burling was not on that losing team and the only holdover on the Kiwi starting crew was wing trimmer and skipper Glenn Ashby. New Zealand were certainly not thinking about that 2013 defeat this time, taking wins in all five initial races, although ORACLE TEAM USA already had one point from their victory in the Qualifiers. The Americans did take race six, but the New Zealanders only had victory on their minds and won the next three races to win the America’s Cup and put the memories of 2013 well and truly behind them.

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde Over the years Britain has produced a number of iconic boat builders and one of the best known is Fairline Yachts – formerly Fairline Boats. This builder is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and with new models coming and a waiting list for others it seems incredible to believe the company was in administration less than two years ago. I went along to Fairline’s Oundle base to see for myself how these yachts are built and to find out more about the future of the company and the celebrations it has planned for 2017. Turn to page 26 to read Fairline’s fascinating story. It has been a busy month in more ways than one with the America’s Cup making news around the world and big changes coming for the Volvo Ocean Race. Followed, of course, on the first weekend of July by the Round the Island Race in association with Cloudy Bay. After winning the America’s Cup World Series Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team went into Bermuda as one of the favourites. Unfortunately, things did not go to plan for Ben and his boys and they ultimately went out to Emirates Team New Zealand who went on to face defenders ORACLE TEAM USA in a rematch of the last America’s Cup Match. It was in 2013, in San Francisco, that ORACLE TEAM USA’s skipper Jimmy Spithill led his team to one of the greatest sporting comebacks, racing back from a 1-8 deficit to win 9-8 over Emirates Team New Zealand. This time around, though, it was the New Zealand team that were victorious after dominating the America’s Cup Match. However it was not to be a double celebration for the Kiwis. While it was incredibly disappointing to see Land Rover BAR go out, there was great cause for celebration when the youth team, Land Rover BAR Academy, beat the defending champions from New Zealand after a dramatic final race.

With younger sailors like this in this country the future of British sailing is looking very strong. Sir Ben Ainslie has already announced his intention to compete in the next America’s Cup, so it will not be long before we are again cheering on the Land Rover BAR team to #BringTheCupHome. We will have to wait and see how many Academy sailors make it into the America’s Cup team next time. With both the America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race announcing major changes that will mean more regular on the water action it is the fans who will benefit, along with the continuity for all the sailors and businesses involved in these huge events. Turn to page 10 for the latest updates about the Volvo Ocean Race, including the move from a three year to a two-year cycle. It was extremely exciting to learn that Dee Caffari will lead Turn the Tide on Plastic in the upcoming edition of the race. The team will be youth focused with a strong sustainability message. Dee also took part in the last race as part of Team SCA, an all-female crew. Another inspirational lady, Hannah Stodel, is the subject of this month’s Boating People. On page 25 you can read all about how the Paralympic sailor and 2016 Cowes Week Ladies Day winner got into sailing and her exciting plans for the future now that sailing is no longer included in the Paralympics. This year’s Lendy Cowes Week begins on 29 July, and there is still time to enter and join the thousands of other sailors taking part, or simply join the more than 100,000 visitors to Cowes during the week. If you have not been before, it is definitely one to tick off the bucket list. We have put together a preview guide on page 22. Whatever your plans for July enjoy the sunshine and time afloat. SAILING WEEK SET TO RETURN AFTER organisers of Southampton’s first ever official Sailing Week heralded the debut event a huge success, the team behind the event is already looking into running the week again in 2018. Organiser Chris Rees said: “The reception to this year’s Southampton Sailing Week has been great, so we are very keen to make it a permanent fixture in the sailing calendar. Southampton really is at the epicentre of sailing so it is only right that the city should have a regular celebration of the sport.” At least 1,000 people got out on the water during the week, many of whom had never tried sailing before. A further 5,000 people are estimated to have taken part in the week’s festivities, which included everything from sailing club open days and coffee mornings to dinghy sailing and an outdoor cinema night. The highlight of Southampton Sailing Week took the form of a spectacular parade of sail, with more than 100 boats heading en masse down Southampton Water. Leading the way was Sir Robin Knox Johnston in his boat Suhaili, along with a giant Svitzer tug, shooting plumes of water into the sky. www.southamptonsailingweek.co.uk

DUCHESS VISITS ROADSHOW HRH Duchess of Cambridge was met by Sir Keith Mills at the final Land Rover BAR Roadshow at Docklands Water Sports and Sailing Centre, East London. The roadshows have been showcasing the challenge the Land Rover BAR team faced at the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda. Schools were invited to a free ‘behind the scenes’ multiactivity day at each of the five destinations of the Land Rover BAR Roadshow. Pupils had the opportunity to learn more about Land Rover BAR, the STEM challenges they faced in the America’s Cup, as well as the chance to get on the water. During her visit the Duchess of Cambridge joined a group workshop on Ocean Health learning about the impact of single-use plastics. The Duchess also took part in a treasure hunt for QR codes where students answered questions on renewable energy sources and why aluminium honeycomb is used to build the raceboat.

AS part of June’s Seafarers Awareness Week, Seafarers UK highlighted that the UK’s ‘island nation’ dependence on shipping and seafarers is set to grow in the wake of Brexit. As the UK embarks on Brexit negotiations, attention is turning to the vital role our ports, harbours and seafarers will have to play in the future. According to Seafarers UK, increased world trade will likely raise the 95 per cent of imports and exports that currently pass through our sea ports. Merchant ships continue to grow in size, the largest now 400m long and capable of carrying 20,000 containers. Half our

food comes from overseas and the UK is dependent on imported oil, gas and biofuel for our power stations and vehicles. Passenger numbers on cruise ships and ferries look set to continue to grow as well, albeit with industry concerns voiced about the need to retain agreeable border control relationships with our European neighbours. Commodore Barry Bryant, Director General of Seafarers UK, said: “As so often in our history when facing political and international pressures, our relationship with the sea provides the strong and enduring stage from which our island and its people can make their mark, whether in trade, defence or diplomacy. “Our unique situation and the quality of our maritime offerings in seafaring people, port and supply chain operations and financial services remains second to none and give us a strong negotiating hand. But they are reliant on the understanding and support of the whole country. Seafarers Awareness Week will strive to carry that message to every corner of our nation.” www.seafarersweek.uk

NEWS SNAPS MENDI BELL

BBC reporter Steve Humphrey was anonymously given a relic from one of Britain’s worst shipping disasters. The bell from the SS Mendi, which sank off the Isle of Wight in 1917 claiming the lives of more than 600 black South African labourers, is thought to have been stripped from the wreck in the 1980s. Maritime archaeologist John Gribble, who has surveyed the ship, said the bell was probably genuine. The bell will be on display at the SeaCity Museum while a decision about permanent housing is made.

DEATH IN THE ICE

HMS Erebus in the Ice, 1846. Image: National Maritime Museum, London

FROM 14 July, the National Maritime Museum will host a major exhibition exploring the fate of Sir John Franklin and his 128-man crew on their final expedition – a mystery that remains unsolved today. Setting sail from the Thames on 19 May 1845, Sir John Franklin and his crew, aboard HMS Erebus and Terror, were the British nation’s biggest hope of finally traversing the whole of the North-West Passage - the much desired passage from Europe to Asia thought to enable an easier trade route. Developed by the Canadian Museum of History in partnership with the NMM and Parks Canada, and in collaboration with the Government of Nunavut and the Inuit Heritage Trust, Death in the Ice: The Shocking Story of Franklin’s Final Expedition will feature more than 200 objects from the collections of the NMM and the CMH. There will also be finds from HMS Erebus, whose resting place was only discovered in 2014, on show for the very first time in Europe. The exhibition promises to advance our understanding of the expedition, to reveal the Victorian fascination with the Arctic and to begin to answer questions about what may have happened to the men on their fateful journey to the Arctic all those years ago. 14 July 2017 – 7 January 2018 www.rmg.co.uk/franklin

CARDBOARD BOATS BEN Fogle will be joining the SUNUS Ocean Racing team as expedition navigator in the Spectre powerboat C237. This summer the team will attempt to break the world record for the fastest circumnavigation of the British Isles. The race boat is powered by the latest supercharged Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines and is capable of just less

QUEEN ELIZABETH

After an eight year build HMS Queen Elizabeth, the largest warship ever built in the UK, has left Rosyth dockyard in Scotland to begin two years of sea trials. Leaving the harbour was the aircraft carrier’s first challenge. Although widened, there were still only 14 inches to spare on each side. The dry weather also meant just 50cm beneath the keel and riverbed. The summer will be spent in the North Sea and Moray Firth before the warship and more than 700 crew sail into Portsmouth in the autumn.

BIG CAT SPOTTED A professional captain who survived the night time capsize of catamaran Leopard last November has been reunited with the yacht after she was found off the North Carolina coast. Charles Nethersole, from Sussex, and his two crew were rescued after he activated his EPIRB when the Atlantic 57 sailing catamaran was flipped over by a likely tornadic waterspout 400nm north of the Dominican Republic. It had been on route from Chesapeake Bay to St. Maarten at the time of the incident. Over five months after she capsized, the Leopard was spotted about 25 miles off Cape Lookout. Sea Tow Crystal Coast was able to successfully salvage the catamaran

and tow it back to Morehead City. The clean-up and sale of the yacht is ongoing and she is reported to be in a good, stable condition. Charles joined ACR Electronics SurvivorClub following the successful rescue in which the Leopard crew was picked up by a nearby freighter. The program provides a free replacement beacon for all its members and promotes the use of 406 MHz beacons. www.acrartex.com

IN SEARCH SUBMARINE GOES HOLLYWOOOD OF FLARES ANDARK are on the search for the person who purchased a Coastal Flare Pack at Andark’s stand at last year’s Southampton Boat Show, as they believe they may have taken a pack with two dummy flares. The company has spent months trying to track the buyer down but have so far been unsuccessful. They are offering the person who helps them to locate the pack £1,000 worth of safety equipment for their club or nominated charity of their choice. Andark’s coastal flare pack should contain six flares and weighs 1.85kgs whereas the dummy flare pack is very lightweight as it only has two dummy units enclosed. Andark did sell other flare packs at the boat show, but these would have been sent direct to customers after the show and there are no safety issues with these. Call 01489 581755 if you have any information.

COLD War submarine HMS Alliance got a dusting of Hollywood magic when it was used as a location for Paramount Picture’s Transformers V: The Last Knight, which is at cinemas now. The National Museum of the Royal Navy’s Gosport-based submarine welcomed A-list stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Mark Wahlberg to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum last year to film director Michael Bay’s sequel of the highly successful film franchise. Supercars Bumblebee and Hotrod, ‘Autobots’ which transform into earth-saving robots, made a special appearance as they sped up to the submarine in a race against time. Further scenes were filmed on board the boat over three days. The filming caused quite a stir in the town as fans congregated at the gate to catch glimpses of the stars and cars. A fisherman in Australian got more than he bargained for when a nine foot shark leapt into his boat. 73-yearold Terry Selwood was left with an injured arm. Terry was rescued, and the coastguard later towed Terry’s boat to shore, but it is thought the shark had died by this time.

MORE RACING SET FOR VOLVO OCEAN RACE THE Volvo Ocean Race will switch from a three-year to a two-year cycle after the upcoming 2017-18 edition, a change that will provide more continuity and more commercial value for professional sailing teams, sponsors and host cities. The Volvo Ocean Race was originally run every four years from its first edition in 1973-74, when it was known as the Whitbread. Since 2005-06 it has been on a three-year cycle. Confirmation of the change will mean at least some race activity in every calendar year, meaning more action for fans, more continuous employment for the professional sailors involved and an even greater return on investment for the stakeholders backing the teams. The 2017-18 edition starts in October from Alicante and will finish at the end of June next year in The Hague, Netherlands. The three races after that will run 2019 - 20, 2021 - 22 and 2023 - 24 and the tender process for host cities is now open for all three editions. Over the last 20 years, the Volvo Ocean Race has expanded massively from the early routes that made as few as three stops around the world. The race now visits many more markets that are important to both stakeholders and fans and in 2017-18 the route takes in 12 host cities. By reducing the cycle, it will not be necessary to go to all commercially important markets in every edition, meaning organisers will be able to choose routes that provide the right balance

Image: Oskar Kihlborg/ Volvo Ocean Race

ALL AT SEA JULY 2017 between the sporting integrity of the race and commercial value. Race CEO Mark Turner said: “The shorter cycle means we could shorten each edition by a few months from the current eight to nine month format, but nonetheless go to more markets in total over each period of four years and two races.” “At the same time we will strengthen the core DNA and heritage of the race – always being around the world, and always having the Southern Oceans around Antarctica at its heart.” Mark said: “One expected result of these changes will be teams and their sponsors committing for two races at a time, over three to four years – something that has rarely happened in the past with a previous timespan of two races in six years being too long a commitment for most companies. “That means more continuity for everyone, more sponsor activation and general ‘noise’ between races since the teams will not close down, and more effective long-term sailing team set-ups in both sporting and commercial terms. “There will still be plenty of breathing space for this iconic event, though – between one finish and the start of the following race, there is still going to be 16 or so months, so we are not over-exposing it either.” The race has already announced that the 14th edition in 2019-20 will be contested in brand new foil-assisted monohull boats. Also, the addition of ‘flying’ multihulls for use inshore means the race will provide the toughest all-round test in sailing. The switch in cycle could also help complete the alignment of sailing’s big race calendar. For the first time in history, the Volvo Ocean Race, America’s Cup, Olympics and Vendée Globe’s two and four-year cycles should be in sync with no direct overlap of the actual events. www.volvooceanrace.com

Team SCA/Volvo Ocean Race

JOINT VENTURE

DEE CAFFARI TO TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC IN the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 Dee Caffari will lead Turn the Tide on Plastic, a mixed, youth focused team with a strong sustainability message. Her campaign, already backed by the Mirpuri Foundation and Ocean Family Foundation, is dedicated to the issue of ocean health. The sixth confirmed team out of a possible eight for the upcoming

edition will amplify United Nations Environment’s Clean Seas: Turn the Tide on Plastic campaign throughout the eight months of the race, which covers 45,000nm of racing around the world, taking in 12 host cities on six continents. Dee is an experienced round-theworld sailor who will return for a second consecutive edition, having competed on Team SCA in 2014-15.

She is also notable for setting a landmark record in 2006, becoming the first woman to sail single-handed and non-stop the ‘wrong way’ around the world. Then in 2009, she completed the Vendée Globe race and set a new record to become the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world in both directions. Dee’s ambition is to build a multi-

national, 50-50 male/female squad, with the majority under 30 years of age. As part of the sustainability focus, the messages around diversity in age and gender will be strong themes of the campaign. “I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to sail for a cause I am so passionate about,” said Dee. “The Volvo Ocean Race is the ultimate test of a team in sport, and with the ambition to race with a youth-orientated international mixed crew, we are looking to make an impact on and off the water.” “Seeing the amount of plastic in the ocean is heartbreaking. We will be sailing with a youth-orientated team because the reality is, it is going to be the next generations who inherit the mess that we are making now. This is a major issue and we need to encourage this generation, and future generations, to step up.” The Volvo Ocean Race starts from Alicante on 22 October and will stop at Lisbon, Cape Town, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Auckland, Itajaí, Newport, Cardiff and Gothenburg before a big finish in The Hague at the end of June 2018. www.volvooceanrace.com

Hunton Yachts Ltd and Rib-X Ltd have announced a joint venture to produce the Hunton range of RIBs. The joint venture constitutes a profit share agreement, combining the manufacturing skills of Rib-X with the design and technology of Hunton. Under the three-year agreement, Rib-X will manufacture the Hunton RIBs and both companies will jointly market and sell the product. www.hunton.co.uk

The 9-inch chartplotter delivers innovative sailing functionality controlled through a bright intuitive multi-touch screen and menu structure that makes setting courses, reading wind speed and direction, depth, bearings and a number of other sailing functions, simple and intuitive to access and understand. The Vulcan 9 features built in Wi-Fi allowing connections to the internet, via a marina or smartphone hotspot. £1,378 www.bandg.com

Elvstrøm Sails’ Blue Water Runner performs the role of three sails in one. Designed as effectively two Yankee sails on a single luff cable, it works as a light up-wind genoa, a reaching ‘Yankee’ when the two-ply sails are together. When running dead-downwind it can be peeled open into ‘goose-winging’ mode, doubling the sail area to increase boat speed. It can be trimmed and poled out like a spinnaker, or used without a pole. The Blue Water Runner is the creation of Jeremy White, Elvstrøm Sails UK Loft Manager, in response to customers asking for a downwind sail that gave the thrill of surfing downwind offshore, and is

easy to control and stow quickly when wind conditions changed. His vision was a sail for blue water cruising and family sailors who want to sail downwind, for days on end if needed, giving speed, stability and safety. BOATING READS THE CAPE HORNERS’ CLUB

THE CATAMARAN BOOK

By: Adrian Flanagan £17.09 (Hardback)

Back in 1979 Fernhurst Books was launched with The Laser Book, the first of its Start to Finish series. The series has been relaunched with a new layout and a fresh set of contributors. The fourth edition of The Catamaran Book is the first in the new-look series, with Tom Phipps, whose father Brian Phipps wrote the first edition, becoming the lead author. Tom has won countless National, European and World Catamaran Championships, and with his crew, Nikki Boniface, is the leading GBR Nacra 17 team campaigning for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The book covers the techniques and skills needed

Tales of Triumph and Disaster at the World’s Most Feared Cape This book recounts the history of the Cape through the stories of the people who have taken it on and made it round – the Cape Horners’ Club. From the first recorded single-hander in 1934 (Al Hansen, who was lost shortly afterwards and his body never found), the book follows these very different protagonists as they pursue the ultimate goal while battling almost overwhelming odds. Woven through their stories is a history of the Cape, from its discovery to its use as a trading corridor until the opening of the Panama Canal, to its more recent role as a pure challenge for the best yachtsmen and yachtswomen in the world. Changes in weather prediction and navigation have had a huge impact, but the pressure for ever-faster times has never been greater.

This book is a photographic record of how England’s relationship with the sea has shaped our landscape over the past hundred years. Taken from English Heritage’s extensive Aerofilms collection, many of these photographs have never been published before. This book chronicles the changing face of England’s coastlines and riverways and showcases how iconic and lesser known ports, docks, ships, shipyards, naval bases, lighthouses, shipwrecks and maritime architecture have shaped towns, villages and communities across England. The latest photographs in the book also capture the rise of England’s maritime leisure industry and the huge increase in popularity of marinas, sailing and seaside resorts such as Blackpool and Brighton. It is a celebration of England’s ever-changing maritime identity.

SEASONS IN THE SUN

IT has to be one of the most pleasurable experiences when out afloat. The flickering of the sun as it reflects from the wave tops, making the surface of the water look as if it is crusted in diamonds. Yet that double dose of the sun, combined with the breeze, often results in sailors coming ashore at the end of the day with brick red faces. It does not help that when our normal days are spent indoors in an office, with little in the way of protection, a full day afloat, out in the open, can leave its mark on exposed skin. Peeling noses and chapped lips might well be the badge of a great day afloat, but at the same time there are perils in getting sun and wind burnt and they do take their toll. Worse is the apparent lack of a causal connection between exposure and the development of problems. Long forgotten periods of damage in the carefree years of your youth can suddenly surface with an aggressive vengeance decades later. One Solent sailor who discovered the dangers of this cocktail of sun and wind was Peter Massey who had been a keen

windsurfer and fisherman in his younger years. But it would be nearly 30 years later when skin cancer would strike and keep striking, with each outbreak causing more damage. Peter fought bravely and the doctors did all they could but in the end, this terrible illness would take him from his family. His fight, though, goes on, for his son and stepson have set themselves a challenge to not only raise awareness of the ever-present dangers of unprotected exposure to the sun, but at the same time raise £100,000 pounds to be donated to research into skin cancers. It was obvious from the outset that whatever task they undertook would be centred on activities afloat, with the toughest of these being the ‘big one’ – a transatlantic crossing, powered solely by their own endeavours. It is one of the great surprises to find that there are more people who have been into space than have rowed the Atlantic. Rowing across the Atlantic might sound a fantastic notion but it has been made possible by the fact that Peter’s

children are uniquely qualified to undertake such a challenge. Lymington based Jude Massey is a sailing instructor, whilst Greg Bailey, when not working as an A&E Doctor, is keen on all watersports. Even so, crossing the Atlantic purely on oar power (the pair have eschewed some of the more radical designs of boat that have a structure that also acts as a sail) will require many months of gym time, building up strength and stamina. The pair are making an unsupported crossing, meaning that there will be nothing in the way of a safe chase boat nearby. Once they set out from the Canaries, in January 2018, it will be muscle power all the way, one rowing whilst the other rests. They will work 24 hours a day for anything between four and eight weeks as they head towards the Caribbean. What power there is on the boat is only there to maintain their vital communications and navigation equipment, plus the water maker that is essential for the re-hydrating of their freeze-dried meals. Everyone at All at Sea wishes Jude and Greg well with their preparations and their equally tough job of raising the donations for this cause. We will be following their progress and in the coming months will be reporting from not too far from land (hopefully no further than the western Solent) as we go afloat with them to find out what it will be like rowing for an hour at a time. You can watch a video about Jude and Greg at the All at Sea website. Head to the feature pages. www.oceanbrothers.co.uk

KEY TO SAFETY As part of this year’s Boat Fire Safety Week, the RYA launched the 2017 Safety Advisory Notice – featuring six key topics to help boaters think in practical terms about their safety afloat.

The RYA Safety Advisory Notice is reviewed annually and is available for free

THE rclass Maste

When clipping on lines you need to be able to move around the boat but not be able to fall overboard

COMPILED for the leisure boater and first launched in 2014, the RYA Safety Advisory Notice offers a simple digest of critical safety issues including those that have arisen from incidents and tragic accidents in the past year. These learning points supplement the RYA’s key safety messages: look after yourself, have a plan, keep in touch and know your limits. Together they underpin the national governing body’s ethos of self-reliance and responsibility for safety on board. Reviewing the Notice annually enables the RYA Safety Advisory Group to examine safety concerns that have emerged throughout the year and consolidate any lessons learnt. The RYA hopes that highlighting the causes of incidents and how they might have been prevented will encourage us all to think about our own actions in a different light and above all help to make better decisions both before setting off and when out on the water. A helmet may not be required, so ensure you actually need it and that it is fit for purpose

“Wearing a sailing helmet may well be beneficial in reducing the risk of blunt trauma head injury in a high performance environment, but for the less experienced, it could lead to a greater chance of injury if the hazards are not understood.”

The fourth edition focuses on six key topics for boaters to think about: ■ How to combat carbon monoxide ■ The shocking truth of cold water ■ The importance of clipping on intelligently ■ The impact of knots, hitches and splices in HMPE rope ■ The appropriate use of safety helmets in boating ■ Boat maintenance and keeping in touch The guide starts with an important reminder about the importance of understanding the dangers of carbon monoxide and recognising the symptoms of CO poisoning. It recommends fitting an alarm that complies with BS EN502912:2010 and if it sounds, boaters are urged to get out of the boat and into the fresh air immediately. The message is quite clear: get wise, get alarmed and get out.

SAFETY HELMETS

Boaters are reminded about the dangers of carbon monoxide and the need to have an alarm fitted

COLD WATER SHOCK

The latest Safety Advisory Notice also outlines how Cold Water Shock causes involuntary body reactions that can be as swift as they are deadly. The ability to swim well has no impact on these responses. It is far deadlier than hypothermia, yet far less understood by boaters in general. The key to surviving cold shock is being alert to the symptoms and acting quickly to protect your airway and conserve your strength. The RYA’s advice urges boaters not only to be aware of the dangers of CWS, but also the risk of secondary drowning if they recover someone from the water, whereby any water that has entered the lungs can cause a potentially life-threatening condition called pulmonary oedema.

CLIPPING ON

A reminder of the importance of clipping on intelligently advises boaters that movement must be sensibly balanced with the risk of falling overboard; safety lines need to be long enough to let you move around the boat or to carry out the task at hand, but not so long that it will allow you to fall overboard. The impact of knots, hitches and splices in High Modulus Polyethylene rope also features in this year’s Safety Advisory Notice. The RYA’s advice is to carefully consider the type of rope used for specific tasks. Boaters should be aware that knots, hitches and splices in HMPE rope will reduce its strength, possibly by up to 80 per cent of the maximum breaking strain.

With the global interest in the America’s Cup last month, it is timely to think about the appropriate use of safety helmets within the sport. Wearing a sailing helmet may well be beneficial in reducing the risk of blunt trauma head injury in a high performance environment, but for the less experienced, it could lead to a greater chance of injury if the hazards are not understood. The RYA acknowledges that more research is required on this rapidly evolving issue within the sport. However, as with any aspect of boating it is important that if participants feel a helmet may be appropriate for the boating they are doing, they should first assess what it is that they are trying to achieve, whether the intended helmet is fit for purpose and what other measures may be appropriate, either instead of or as well as a helmet.

MAINTENANCE SKILLS

Finally, it is worth considering how upto-date your boat maintenance skills are. Mechanical failure is the single biggest cause of rescue call-outs to sailing and motor cruisers and accounts for nearly 20 per cent of all lifeboat launches. If you know how to fix common problems and how to carry out basic maintenance and engine care, you can avoid becoming part of this statistic.

RYA SAFETRX APP

The RYA remains concerned that many boaters do not tell anyone where they are going, what time they plan to get there or who is on board. In the majority of cases, things work out as intended but occasionally they do go wrong. Hence raising awareness in the Safety Advisory Notice of the RYA SafeTrx app, which is free to download and there is no charge to use it. RYA SafeTrx records

your details, ETA and tracks your trip. The app will automatically alert a nominated contact if the trip goes overdue and your sail plan will be available to HM Coastguard if search and rescue has to be activated. The app also contains a considerable number of useful functions and port, marina and weather information.

WORKING TOGETHER

The RYA continues to work closely with other UK agencies responsible for safety on the water and with the marine trade to progress its policy of information and education, which the RYA believes is a powerful tool in fostering safe attitudes and behaviour on the water. The launch of the 2017 Safety Advisory Notice coincided with Boat Fire Safety Week, which ran from 29 May to 4 June. As part of the national Fire Kills and Boat Safety Scheme initiative, a number of Fire and Rescue Services across the country visited inland and coastal boaters to offer free safety advice and to offer free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to those who live or work on the water. RYA Chief Executive, Sarah Treseder, said: “Safety is a state of mind – it is not simply down to the boat or equipment you have. It is about what we do to prepare and safeguard ourselves. By learning lessons when things do go wrong, we are able to reflect on the contributing factors and help ensure that British boating continues its longstanding tradition of self-reliance and individual responsibility.” Visit the RYA online safety hub at www.rya.org.uk/go/safety for your free copy of the Safety Advisory Notice 2017, along with a wealth of practical advice and tips covering a vast array of boating activities.

THE BOAT FOR ALL FOLK

There may not be a huge number of truly iconic keelboats, but there is one that is celebrating its 75th anniversary and is still much loved by many.

finish, everyone will be watching the clock and looking eastwards for the inevitable (and probably successful) arrival of the Folkboats! It is a measure of the enduring success of the original design that it has been the basis for a number of other hugely successful yachts ranging from the Stella to the Contessa 26, with all of these boats sharing that same ruggedness and charm.

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all The completed wave screen at Haslar aspects of leisure boating.

T

he dinghy world is rich in instantly identifiable iconic dinghies, such as the Finn, Fireball and 505, but the keelboat world is sadly less well endowed. There was, of course, the Fairey Atlanta, with its moulded tumblehome, but these are a boat of yesteryear and are rarely seen today. The exception to this rule has to be one of the very greatest of small cruisers that is as happy heading off on blue water cruises as it is racing around the Solent buoys in Cowes Week. Historically, there are a number of versions of how the Folkboat originally came into being but what is beyond dispute is that the first Folkboat was built and launched during 1942 close to Gothenburg, Sweden. BOAT DESIGN The design of the yacht was an interesting mix of styles, with a sweet overhang at the bow, whilst the after sections appeared almost cut short, with the transom radically raked at 45 degrees. In the same way the design incorporated a long deep keel, yet a strict limit was put on the weight of iron that could be used. With all of the war time limitations that were in place, the hull construction used a local material, Swedish pine, which was laid up with clinker planks. The modest rig was fairly high aspect, but was deliberately kept simple.

The mast was supported by single shrouds with a fractional fore triangle, plus a spinnaker. Down below these early boats were pretty basic, even for a weekender, though this would soon change as with the return to peacetime, the Folkboat would quickly spread far beyond the Nordic shores of its origin. CHANGES INTRODUCED From the outset, the Folkboat had been reasonably focused on racing with the class being operated as a strict one design. Changes did, though, start to creep in, with some boats being given a larger and higher coach roof, giving more headroom down below. Elsewhere, carvel construction was introduced resulting in a smooth skinned hull, before GRP hulls (albeit of the clinker hull shape) started to appear in the mid-1970s. However there was far more than just a pocket rocket racer to the Folkboat, as the excellent sea keeping qualities saw examples of the boat make a number of long distance passages, including at least one solo round the world voyage. The Folkboat would, though, really hit the headlines when, in 1960, two were entered for the first ever OSTAR, the single-handed race across the Atlantic. One of them, Blondie Hassler’s junk rigged Jester, would go on to capture the imagination of the

general public, gaining fame that went far beyond the sailing media. With the wide range of variation in the boats, a distinction had to be made between the stricter one design Nordic Folkboat, easily identifiable by the single F on the mainsail, and the looser rules of the British Folkboat, identified by the FB sail insignia.

STRONG CONTENDERS Despite the age of the design, the Folkboat of today remains a doughty competitor, especially in the waters of the Solent where the class is very strong. They have a great reputation in the Round the Island Race and if the winds are light on the day, no matter how soon the top pro-teams reach the

CELEBRATORY YEAR Meanwhile, the original Folkboat can rightly claim the distinction of being the world’s most popular cruising yacht and has now reached the incredible milestone of its 75th anniversary, with the main celebrations taking place during early August at Kerteminde Sejlklub on the North Easter coast of Denmark. For those not wishing to travel up to the Baltic, in addition to the Round the Island Race, Cowes and Cowes Classic Weeks, the Folkboats will be enjoying their own Week which will be run by the Royal Solent Yacht Club. Of course, in true Folkboat traditions, in addition to the racing there will be a full programme of cruises and passage based events to be enjoyed. That there is still so much attention today in a small yacht that lacks the obvious ‘whizz’ factor of the more modern boats, speaks volumes for just how good the thinking behind that original Swedish boat must have been. Happy birthday to the Folkboat, a boat that was truly made for the people, and here is to the next 25 years leading towards the centenary in 2042. folkboats.co.uk www.folkboats.com

ALL AT SEA JULY 2017

ARE YOU ONBOARD? In the past 12 years OnBoard has introduced more than half a million youngsters to sailing and windsurfing, and in une it was o cially relaunched.

TV presenters Angellica Bell and Michael Underwood joined Paralympic gold medallist Helena Lucas at Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre for the official OnBoard relaunch where a group of local school pupils were having their very first OnBoard sailing session. Angellica said: “It has been fantastic to be involved in relaunching in RYA OnBoard. The best thing about sailing and windsurfing is that they are fun, affordable and fantastic outdoor activities.” The TV couple had their very first sailing session just a few weeks ago. “We had a great time out on the water, the instructor was fantastic despite the fact that we had never done it before. Thankfully we did not get too wet, which is a bonus and the children had loads of fun!” Angellica concluded.

DEVELOPING CHARACTER

As part of the OB relaunch, the team have been working closely with leading educational expert Professor Bill Lucas, Director at the Centre for Real-World Learning at The University of Winchester, to identify how sailing can nurture these traits and crossover into all areas of a young person’s life. RYA Sport Development Manager Alistair Dickson explained: “In sailing, we know the life skills and positive attributes that sailing can bring a child or young person. The new-look OnBoard really focuses on harnessing and communicating these benefits to successfully engage with teachers, youth leaders and parents to help them see beyond sailing as a sport purely for fun but rather as an activity that embeds traits that can shape a child’s life, while having a great time in the process”. The new-look OB programme focuses on developing seven specific character attributes: creative, confident, team player, communicator, performer, determined and independent.

confidence, which is reflected in the classroom, even, for example, not being afraid to ask for help or put their hand up and answer a question. “Sailing changes so fast and it teaches them how to read a situation and deal with problems from an early age. That can be in pairs and communicating to patiently solve problems together or as an individual listening to instructions and carrying them out. These are skills that constantly feed into academic learning and later life.

“ONBOARD IS CRUCIAL IN PROVIDING THE FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR SPORT.”

WHY THE CHANGE?

The government’s ‘Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation’ launched in 2015 looked at activity not just in terms of physical fitness but, amongst other factors, mental wellbeing and social and community development too. With mental health and wellbeing high on the national education agenda, and an OnBoard survey showing a significant number of clubs running OnBoard because of its positive impact in the local community, OnBoard had to reflect on what people now want from a sport and be repositioned to be able to achieve these outcomes. Grasmere Primary, in the Lake District, is one school that has seen sailing have such an impact on its pupils that they have made it one of their extracurricular activities. Headteacher Jo Goode said: “We have children who it has absolutely transformed. They feel a sense of achievement from doing something on their own and it gives them greater

“Many children say being on the water is the first time in their lives they have felt freedom like it. There are no mums and dads telling them what to do, it is all on them. The adrenaline and independence they get from being in control and making their own decisions is amazing.”

FUTURE OF OUR SPORT

Alistair concludes: “OnBoard is crucial in providing the foundation for the future of our sport. This new approach enables us to share the real value of sailing. It is a change in mindset, but it is an exciting opportunity for people to see sailing for the sport we know it to be and for clubs and centres to benefit too.” The OnBoard website has all the information you need to get involved with OnBoard whether you are a teacher, parent or a sailing venue. www.rya.org.uk/onboard

SUPPORTING ONBOARD

Bill Lucas explains: “For several years now the Department for Education has recognised the importance of developing character in schools and has committed to helping them ensure more children develop character traits, attributes and behaviours that underpin success in education and work. “It is a tricky, fast-paced and increasingly competitive world young people are growing up in. To be successful they need to evolve in line with this everchanging world in which they are living. Through having developed a number of core character attributes an individual can be flexible and adaptable to embrace these challenges.”

t is RYA OnBoard but not as you know it. Imagine sparking a passion for sailing in a child, watching that child’s confidence and independence grow week-by-week and inspiring that youngster so much that they always want to fit sailing into their life. This is the ethos that sits at the heart of the newlook RYA OnBoard programme.

LENDY COWES WEEK First taking place in 1826, Cowes Week is the longest-running annual sailing regatta in the world.

N

ot only has it been running for nearly 200 years, Cowes Week is also one of the world’s best-known sailing regattas, taking place over eight days in the Solent. Each day of the regatta sees racing taking place in a range of craft from classics to modern, high-tech boats divided into 40 classes. Over the course of the week spectators can expect to see between 800 and 1,000 boats taking to the water. With that many boats sailing some 30 different courses in one of the busiest commercial stretches of water in the world,

the racing at Lendy Cowes Week is always exciting. The sheltered waters and unusual tidal conditions of the Solent make for some interesting and challenging racing. While some competitors will be Olympic and World Champions, Lendy Cowes Week welcomes sailors of all abilities and ages. Incredibly up to 8,000 people will take to the water each day, plus more than 100,000 visitors will be in Cowes watching the action and enjoying the unique atmosphere this event creates. Over the years the regatta has been visited by royalty and other world-famous personalities as well as naval warships, superyachts and square-riggers.

SEVENSTAR TRIPLE CROWN

One of the big stories of 2017 is the introduction of a new big boat race series, the Sevenstar Triple Crown at Lendy Cowes Week. This will be a regatta within a regatta that is open to large IRC rated racing boats of at least 20m LOA with a minimum TCC of 1.500 and up to 36m LOA. There will be a series of three races taking place on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Lendy Cowes Week, with the Wednesday race being an Around the Island Race, giving participating boats the opportunity to mount recordbreaking circumnavigation attempts. With a potentially wide range of boats expected to enter, from out-and-out racing boats to cruiser-racers, three classes will compete for the Triple Crown: Maxi-Racer Class, Cruiser-Racer Class and an OceanRacer Class. Three of the sailing world’s most historic and prestigious trophies will be awarded to the three classes: ■ The Queen’s Cup, presented to the Royal Southampton Yacht Club by Queen Victoria in 1897 ■ The King George V International Cup from the Royal Thames Yacht Club, a huge flagon that was awarded for the 23m class in 1911 ■ The Royal Yacht Squadron’s King’s Cup 1920 which was presented by King George V in 1920 for a race for yachts exceeding 100 tons.

The overall winner of the three races will be presented with the Triple Crown trophy. Loaned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, the trophy will be named the Duke of Edinburgh Triple Crown Trophy. Kate Johnson, Commercial & Marketing Director for Cowes Week Limited, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that The Duke of Edinburgh has kindly agreed to lend this stunning and historic trophy for the overall winner of the Sevenstar Triple Crown. This will surely make the racing even more competitive as competitors vie for such a notable prize. The Duke of Edinburgh has been a regular competitor at Cowes Week since the late 1940s and we are absolutely delighted that he has chosen to mark his support for the regatta in this way.”

ON THE DAY

Although starts generally take place off Cowes, either on the Royal Yacht Squadron line or on the Bramble line, it is important to read the Sailing Instructions carefully as some starts will be from a committee boat line. Classes sail varied ‘round-the-cans’ courses designed to suit the style of boat and prevailing wind and tide conditions on each day. When racing competitors must be aware of restricted areas as every year boats are penalised for going through them.

CHARITY FUNDRAISERS

This year the official regatta charity is the Andrew Simpson Foundation, founded in memory of the Olympic Gold medallist, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson MBE, who died in a training accident in 2013. Through its charitable activities, including the practical delivery of projects as well as grant funding, the Foundation uses sailing to promote health and wellbeing and to help develop personal skills that can improve a young person’s ability to succeed in life and work. Richard Percy, CEO of the Foundation, said: “It is a privilege to be supported by such an iconic British sailing event. The funds raised will be directed towards inspiring sailing initiatives that improve the lives of young people.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Lendy Is the new Title Sponsor of Cowes Week for the next three years giving the regatta the official title Lendy Cowes Week. Paul Riddell, Head of Marketing and Communications for Lendy Ltd, said: “Lendy Cowes Week is set to be a tremendous success and we are very much looking forward to enhancing the experience of both the crews and spectators who will descend upon the Isle of Wight this summer.”

The finishing line used by each group is also allocated each day. The two fixed lines are either at the Royal Yacht Squadron (between the flagstaff and mark Alpha), just to the east of Cowes Harbour (between a committee boat and mark Gamma) or at the Bramble line. When you finish do not forget to complete your declaration before the deadline after each day of racing. The declaration needs to have your finish time and, ideally, should also include details of the sail number of the

ENTERING

Standard entry fees apply until the week prior to the start of the event when there will be a late entry fee. Although the online entry process for Lendy Cowes Week is simple, it is recommended that you read the instructions given on the Taking Part pages of the regatta’s website. Before you start, you should also read the Advance Notice of Regatta 2017. With up to 1,000 boats racing across about 40 classes, the Sailing Instructions for Lendy Cowes Week are generally more complex than other regattas.

boat ahead and the boat astern of you at the finish regardless of class. Results come quickly. Within minutes of crossing the finish line, you can find out where you finished in relation to other boats in your class and, in the handicapped fleets, whether anyone still racing can beat you on corrected time. This information is available from a number of sources including the regatta’s website, on EventTV screens around the town, from the Regatta Centre and on Cowes Radio.

So the first and most important piece of advice is to read the Sailing Instructions thoroughly, read them again, and then get someone else on the boat to read them too. The SI’s are usually available for download from the website at least two weeks before the start of the regatta. In addition, a waterproof copy will be issued as part of the registration process. A briefing is held on the Friday evening before the start of the regatta at the Event Centre, Cowes Yacht Haven. There are separate briefings for competitors in each of the

FOR THE SPECTATORS

A great spot to watch the action is the area between the Castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons, where you will be able to catch the starts. You will be able to get very close to the boats and even hear the countdowns from the race officers. In the afternoon, head along the Green towards Egypt Point to watch the fleet as they finish. Not only are The Green and The Parade popular locations to watch the racing but for those wanting to watch from the water, there are a number of spectator boat options. The hour-long trips cost £12.50 for adults and £8 for children. There are also hour long RIB rides available for the higher price of £35 for adults and £25 for children. As well as racing, further events will take place during the week including, on the Sunday, Family Day when there will be plenty of things for all the family to do. Look to the skies on Friday night and you will be able to watch the incredible Red Arrows display team performing their world famous aerial display. Ladies Day, this year sponsored by ELEMIS, will return on Tuesday celebrating the achievements of women in sailing. All ladies are encouraged to wear their seafaring navy-and-white stripes and teams will be out and about rewarding those with the most eye-catching outfits. In addition, expect to find special offers for ladies in the shoreside venues during the day including discounts at bars and pop-up shops. The main focus of the celebrations, however, is an exclusive evening reception at which the ‘Ladies Day Trophy’ is awarded. You can read our Q&A with last year’s winner, British Paralympic sailor Hannah Stodel, on page 25. Hannah joined an impressive list of winners including Libby Greenhalgh, Dee Caffari and Helena Lucas.

White (smaller open day boats) and Black Groups (larger boats mainly with cabins) with the White Group briefing starting at 18:30 and the one for Black Group starting an hour later at 19:30. These briefings are not mandatory but attendance is strongly encouraged, particularly for newcomers. One or at the most two people from each boat should attend. Whether you are taking part or just soaking up the atmosphere have a wonderful week at Cowes. ■ 29 July – 5 August ■ lendycowesweek.co.uk

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A with Hannah Stodel Paralympic sailor and 2016 Cowes Week Ladies Day winner.

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU HEARD PARALYMPIC SAILING HAD BEEN DROPPED FOR TOKYO 2020?

I was utterly heartbroken waking up to the news in Miami at the World Cup. What annoyed me the most was that I felt the former International Association for Disabled Sailing committee made themselves very scarce and did not come forward to support the sailors; they only tried to cover their own backs. Along with Geoff Holt and a few others, I am campaigning very hard to get sailing reinstated, but sadly the chances are very slim now.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST SAILING CHALLENGE?

My biggest challenge always has and probably always will be overcoming people’s first impressions. Just the other day, I met someone who did not know my sailing background, and straight out he said I could not possibly sail on a big boat in anything over 20 knots as I would not be able to hold on. People are so quick to judge disability without really understanding the human with the disability.

WE UNDERSTAND YOU ARE PLANNING A MOVE INTO OFFSHORE SAILING. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PLANS?

I have not really made any official announcements as it is very early days, but I plan to put everything I have into my dream of racing in the Vendee Globe, and in doing so being the first disabled person to compete.

Hannah Stodel was the Ladies Day Winner at Cowes Week last year. Image: Paul Wyeth

WHEN DID YOU GET INTO SAILING AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BOAT?

I started sailing at three, but it was more a “get in the boat and sit down, here are some marmite sandwiches” approach from my mum, who is hugely competitive having been an Olympic level 470 sailor. We raced the Mirror together at our home club in Brightlingsea, Essex. (Hannah’s mum, Sue, campaigned for selection for Seoul 1988).

HOW DID YOU MOVE FROM CLUB SAILING TO BEING A PARALYMPIAN (HANNAH WAS BORN WITHOUT A LOWER RIGHT ARM)?

I took a weird path, I guess, to get to the Paralympics. I headed off down the RYA Youth Squad system, all the time believing that disabled sailing

Hannah racing at Cowes Week in 2016. Image: Paul Wyeth

WHAT ELSE IS ON YOUR SAILING ‘TO DO’ LIST? was the weaker option. A phone call from Andy Cassel (Atlanta gold medallist) inviting me to train with him soon opened my eyes.

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THE SONAR THAT ATTRACTED YOU?

I love the slow tactical racing that the Sonar provides. It is also a very physical boat, sailed mainly by men, and I love to be strong enough to push hard, throw the boat around the course and compete on a level playing field.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

I have been so lucky with my career as it has allowed me to travel the world, meet amazing people with incredible stories, as well as being able to represent my country at the Olympics four times.

I want to make sure I “jump” on all of the key racing stepping stones to the Vendee, and for me that would be TJV, Route de Rhum and Barcelona World Race. I would also, on a personal level, like to race with my family at some point.

YOU WERE THE LADIES DAY WINNER AT LAST YEAR’S COWES WEEK. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WIN? It was a bit surreal to be honest. I totally did not expect to win, so much so that I was in the protest room sorting out a Sonar class dispute and I had already sent my apologies! A phone call, a very quick car change and I was standing next to Libby (Greenhalgh) holding the trophy. It was an incredible boost to my confidence, and still looking at the trophy and the amazing names that are on it, I cannot fully believe it.

Hannah with her fellow Olympic crew, John Robertson and Steve Thomas. Image: Richard Langdon/British Sailing Team

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

My biggest driving force has been my uncle’s words “Never give up”. Now I know it is a little cheesy, but it is something I fully believe. People will judge, have opinions and may not understand your dreams or ambitions, but you should go after them anyway. Determination is an asset that you should not be afraid of.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU?

So many! Ellen MacArthur for sure has been one of my biggest influences. She was the one that first put the idea into my head about the Vendee, and I was lucky enough to sail with her on board the Trimaran Foncia Kingfisher; an opportunity for me to appreciate the sailing, the freedom, the happiness it can bring. The Magenta project ladies are all amazing, forceful, super talented people and what they are doing to kick down the doors for women in sailing is nothing short of amazing. Conrad Coleman’s story from the recent Vendee Globe has really inspired me. He did not win, but finishing the race under jury rig, on no food is nothing short of incredible; plus his story telling along the way kept us all feeling like we were really there along for the ride. Of course a great many Vendee sailors: Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Sam Davies, Dee Caffari, Brian Thompson, Mike Golding, Rich Wilson, Alex Thompson… the list is endless. Right now, I am also a little addicted to following Mary Rook and her adventures on the Figaro circuit - now there is one hell of a determined lady! She rocks…

ALL AT SEA JULY 2017

The summer of 2017 marks 50 years since Jack Newington transformed disused gravel pits in Peterborough to create one of Britain’s most-loved boat builders, Fairline.

FAIRLINE’S GOLDEN CELEBRATION for his yacht, but also the perfect marina for boat building with a slipway, workshop and chandlers added in 1964. Upon acquiring a set of fibreglass moulds with the description ‘fair line’ written on them in chalk, JT’s creativity ignited once again – he launched a new boat called the Fairline 19. That very first boat was the sign of things to come. Over 700 Fairline 19s were built between 1967 and 1975. The Fairline 19 was soon joined by the Fury 25, shortly followed by a 22ft sports cruiser, the Holiday, but it was not until the Phantom 32 launched in 1974 that Fairline started to be recognised as a serious player in the fledgling GRP boat building market.

FATHER AND SON Building handcrafted boats is an important part of the ethos of Fairline Yachts

A

s Fairline celebrates its 50th anniversary, it is fair to say that the UK boat builder has had its fair share of highs and lows. Today, Fairline is enjoying a renaissance under new ownership, a new name and a new commitment to all the characteristics that has helped make Fairline such an integral part of the boat-building industry for 50 years.

IN THE BEGINNING

It started in the early 1960s when Fairline’s founder, Jack T Newington (known as JT), set himself the challenge of solving the puzzle: how do I moor my beloved family cruiser, the Shirala, when there is no marina? He ventured into the unknown by digging through from the World War Two gravel pits near to where he sailed, connecting them to the River Nene. His intrepid attitude paid off. He not only created private moorings

The Fairline story is inextricably linked to one man: Sam Newington. The son of founder Jack Newington, Sam took over the reins from his father in 1970, when the business was just starting to take off and had 14 employees. Sam remained at the helm for more than 25 years. He was not the most likely candidate to run the company; indeed he resisted for the first three years after Fairline was launched (he was an RAF pilot and a management consultant to name just some of his occupations pre-Fairline). However,

as it turned out, Sam brought to Fairline a combination of highly-respected people-skills and business acumen that took the company to new heights. His ethos and legacy still resonate with the company today. In the early days new Fairline models were sent to France for family to use – and user test – and fixes were reported back to the UK. Sam expanded the company with dealerships in the newly popular boating destination of the Mediterranean and by the end of the ‘70s had a team of nearly 150 and led Fairline to being the first UK boat builder to be quoted on the Stock Exchange. Under Sam’s steady leadership, throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s Fairline Boats released classic designs like the hugely popular Fairline 40 and the very first Targa, which has inspired many lasting models including the Targa 48 and the Targa 53 GT. In the mid 1980s the boating market exploded and as people started going further afield so too the size of boats grew. In the early 1990s Fairline made its move into the larger yacht market with the creation of the first boat in the Squadron series, the Squadron 62. By the late ‘90s, the Targa and Squadron lines were well established and Fairline had amassed a global dealer network. Growth continued apace throughout the early noughties with the yard’s 10,000th boat being delivered to its owner (it was a

Squadron 65) and Fairline completing two of its most ambitious programmes to date: the construction of a major new production facility, Nene Valley II, and the launch of its flagship yacht, the Squadron 74. Sam retired in the mid 1990s, and this was followed by a management buy-out. Then the 2008 financial crisis happened. The luxury leisure boat industry was hit very badly. From not being able to build boats fast enough it soon became a buyers’ market. In the years that followed, Fairline was bought and sold and suffered highs and lows, much like other businesses during the tough recessionary years. At the end of 2015 the company went into administration and kept around 70 staff to work on the handful of boats still in construction. However, the tide turned for Fairline in January 2016 when it was bought out of administration by two Russian investors who had been in talks with various boatyards in 2015 before deciding to invest in Fairline. Under the leadership of a highly experienced marine industry management team led by Managing Director, Russell Currie, the new company, Fairline Yachts, has secured the boat yard’s future.

DESIGN MATTERS

When looking for a new designer to take Fairline forward the original brief to 12 design studios was to come up with a 60ft sports boat and 80ft flybridge that must visually still be a Fairline but also be modern and cutting edge. After a tough process that saw the original 12 reduced to four and then two, it was Italian superyacht designer Alberto Mancini’s vision that excited the company bosses and top dealerships. With an exciting new partnership and collaboration with Alberto Mancini and renowned Dutch naval engineers Vripack, the next generation of Fairline has been heralded. Last year saw the first results of this partnership, with the concept launch of the new Targa 63 GTO, which will be premiered at Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2017. Incredibly they sold nine of this craft at Cannes last year without even having the physical boat to show, and it is already sold into mid 2018.

Of the 54 dealers around the world, all 54 have stayed with the new Fairline Yachts, an indication of the confidence they have in the brand and team.

GOLDEN MOMENTS

To honour the 50th anniversary, the luxury motor yacht manufacturer has a year packed full of ‘Golden Moments’ planned – the first of which came just six days into the New Year, at London Boat Show 2017. Representative of the progress the company has made over the years, Fairline incorporated some of the latest technology into its stand, with the introduction of a Virtual Reality experience.

definitely a Golden Moment for Fairline. Back in the UK, this month will see a special open day for families of those who work at Oundle. Then, in September, the launch of the Targa 63 GTO at Cannes Yachting Festival will be an exciting first step in Fairline’s future design journey. Towards the close of the year, Fairline will release a second volume of its 50th anniversary book, which will contain all the Golden Moments from 2017. Fairline owners, fans and staff will come together to create a truly memorable piece of history – a compilation of Golden Moments for the brand throughout its golden year.

TARGA 48 OPEN STARTING FROM £573,300

In its open form, with the canvas roof retracted, there is a true sense of freedom that continues out onto the cockpit with its large sunpad. The cabin layout features a mid master with an optional sofa that converts into an additional bed, there is a forward double cabin that can convert to a V-berth and the option of a third cabin in lieu of a dinette.

“At the height of the market Fairline was building around 260 boats a year and in this, their 50th year, the number will be 50.” It allowed visitors to experience the first fully Mancini-designed Fairline yacht, the Targa 63 GTO, months before production had even began. The London Boat Show also saw the launch of a beautiful commemorative hardback coffee table book, which tells the story of Fairline’s first 50 years. The VR experience and anniversary book went on to tour the globe at boat shows in Dusseldorf, Miami and Mallorca to name just a few. June saw another significant Golden Moment, with a Fairline owners’ party in Mallorca like no other. Port de Soller welcomed around 50 Fairline owners, along with their family and friends, to the largest gathering of Fairline boats ever seen. With live bands, fresh local food, fine wine and around 250 guests, this night was

AT FIRST SITE

In this celebratory year All at Sea was invited to visit Fairline Yacht’s Oundle site for a look at the actual build process of these yachts and to find out more about the people behind the headlines. There are three enormous sheds in which they build yachts for orders around the world. Staff here now number 280, including apprentices, and comprise those from the Fairline Boats days and others post administration. Fairline is proud to have second and third generation boat builders still working in the factory today. Laid out in three separate working areas, the boats gradually make their way to the front of the shed ready for delivery. At the far end is the moulding process before a crane pops it out and moves the shell of the boat to the next stage which includes cabling and pipework. Finally you see the finished boat coming together with all the final parts and accessories that make these boats a Fairline. Wardrobes are put in place, beds positioned and then, very thorough, final checks are made by one man, Joe Cuthbert, who has been working at Fairline for many years. We witnessed him at work and it is safe to say not much gets past him. The total build time depends on the model and is around eight to ten weeks for a 48ft model, while for a 65ft it can be nine months. However, with a waiting list the time before the finished boat is delivered can be much longer. A degree of customisation is available and designs allow for the swapping of certain areas of the boat and, of course, interiors like fabrics are easy to customise. Less common is the paintwork, but one owner chose to have his Targa 48 painted grey, silver and black with woodwork in matt grey to match his car. Some customers are very interested by the build process and follow it closely, sitting down with the specification crew to create the ultimate boat of their dreams. Others prefer to wait for the fully finished craft to arrive. These boats are truly hand-built, something Fairline is very proud of. Even jobs that were once done by machines have been given back to employees to achieve that hand finished look and feel. One of these jobs is applying lacquer by hand where a machine once did the job. The plan, and so far it looks like it is working, is to produce a good quality product – not in high volumes – that customers are happy to pay that bit more for. This ethos goes back to when Sam Newington was at the helm.

TARGA 48 GT STARTING FROM £608,580

The electric hardtop on this sports cruiser offers an open-to-the-skies experience. A spacious, sociable upper deck offers plentiful seating. The cockpit features a J-shaped seating area with a table, and can offer the option of a sunbed conversion. The lower deck has three cabins as standard and there is an optional lower saloon/dinette in lieu of the third cabin layout. TARGA 53 OPEN STARTING FROM £813,600

Available since September 2016, the Targa 53 OPEN features uninterrupted entertaining above decks with a single level teak floor from cockpit to companionway. Customers are also able to choose between a two cabin or three cabin configuration. The cockpit has a spacious three-person sun bed above the tender garage, large ‘U’ shaped cockpit seating with a wet bar opposite and spacious companion seating across from the helm. TARGA 53 GT STARTING FROM £826,800

Built to order and built around you, the new Fairline Targa 53 GT lets you personalise your space. The mid-ships master cabin is complemented by a double guest cabin forward and a versatile twin cabin to port. The cockpit and saloon accommodation has also been well thought out offering an aft sunbed and wraparound cockpit seating. TARGA 63 GTO STARTING FROM £1,401,600

Teamed with their own designers, Mancini’s Italian flair and Vripack’s ingenuity has led to a yacht that is innovative, versatile, light and stylish. Fairline consider the Targa 63 GTO as the flagbearer of Fairline’s design future, and as testament to the best of British boatbuilding. (ALL PRICES INC VAT)

SQUADRON LINE-UP SQUADRON 43 STARTING FROM £510,000

New to the Fairline line-up of yachts, customers can expect this smaller Squadron to be released in late 2018/early 2019. SQUADRON 48 STARTING FROM £636,300

The expansive flybridge creates a number of sociable spaces; there is a large seating area around a dining table that can be lowered to convert into a sunpad, as well as forwardfacing seating alongside the upper helm. Below there are three cabins with the flexibility of a dinette option in place of the third cabin. SQUADRON 53 STARTING FROM £911,400

Launched at Boot Düsseldorf in January, this Squadron is based on Fairline’s existing 53ft hull but features a new design from the deck upwards courtesy of Italian yacht designer Alberto Mancini. The layout configurations provide owners with complete flexibility, including three or four cabins and multiple arrangements including the main deck, forward or aft locations or below deck, as well as the new addition of foredeck seating. SQUADRON 65 STARTING FROM £1,830,000

With an increase in size comes an increase in the ability to really impress. It has three distinct social areas: a forward cruising chaise longue and sun pad, aft facing sunbeds and a seating/dining area. The free-flowing saloon area allows guests to interact more freely and with the galley positioned at the heart of the yacht there is every opportunity to socialise with all those around you.

IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS SQUADRON 78 CUSTOM The award-winning Squadron 78 Custom draws on a 40-year heritage. From the well-proven hull to the furnishings and cabinetry, more than 12,000 Fairlines stand behind the creation of this luxury motor yacht. As its name implies, a high level of customisation is available and clients can rely on specialist advice throughout the order and commissioning process. SEE FAIRLINE FOR YOURSELF! At the height of the market Fairline was building around 260 boats a year and in this, their 50th year, the number will be 50. To symbolise this special achievement all boats built in 2017 will have the shield logo in gold. The company does plan to gradually increase numbers year by year, but only up to 100 by 2019. It does not seem unrealistic that they will achieve this with a waiting list well into 2018 on some models. There are likely to be a number of reasons for this impressive sales record, aside from the quality of the boats. Brexit and the resulting impact on sterling has benefitted many business but also an important factor for Fairline is customer loyalty. Many of the current buyers are no doubt loyal Fairline customers going back many years.

Although Fairline is a British boat builder very few boats actually stay in the UK; it is around one in a hundred. Many head to Europe but a large proportion – 30 per cent – go over the Atlantic to the boat loving Americans via cargo ships from Harwich or Southampton. There are size restrictions due to the company’s inland lcoation in Oundle with 82 - 84ft boats being the largest that can transported to the coast from the factory. If you are wondering how the boats make it to ports from Oundle then you would have to be on the roads late at night as this is when large boats are moved – with a police escort of course. It can take two days to transport a boat from Oundle to Ipswich, a journey of 95 miles, where they have a testing facility.

Longer term the company is looking for an additional waterfront manufacturing facility and is already looking at possible sites. They are also planning to move into bigger boats; a mid 80ft boat is on the drawing board for launch in 2019. A 43ft is also in development for launch next spring. It is not a quick process, though, and from design to building can take up to a couple of years. To think that 19 months ago Fairline Boats was in administration and now Fairline Yachts has a waiting list and new models on the drawing board, the anniversary celebrations could not have come at a better time. The future is surely looking golden for this iconic boat builder. www.fairline.com www.facebook.com/FairlineYachts

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

We over wintered our motor yacht Christiana in this lovely marina on the quiet and peaceful Karpaz peninsular. We found it to be very pretty and well-appointed, with great facilities, Beach Club and restaurants and a large travel lift. The prices are very good and there are some beautiful beaches nearby to visit. Chris Tarmey, UK owner of 12m motor yacht Christiana

FREE FIBRE BROADBAND FOR YACHT HAVENS’ CUSTOMERS MARINA group Yacht Havens Ltd have undertaken a major overhaul of their Wi-Fi infrastructure to bring fast fibre broadband to their marinas, increasing the speed and reliability of the free Wi-Fi service provided to marina berth holders and visitors. The Wi-Fi enhancements have been rolled out at Yacht Havens’ locations in Lymington, Plymouth, Neyland, Largs and Troon delivering speeds of up to 100Mbps to each site allowing for a significant improvement of internet speeds around the pontoons. Yacht Havens’ IT Director Ben Fox explained how the upgrades were essential

in order to meet the needs of modern day sailors: “Inevitably, we are seeing ever-increasing broadband requirements of today’s boat owners, both in download speed and reliability. “Whilst our marinas and dry stacks benefit from being in some of the most stunning locations, they are not all connected to the national fibre network. “We have therefore invested in our own advanced Wi-Fi infrastructure to deliver fibre broadband to our sites in order to improve the customer experience across our complimentary berth holder and visitor Wi-Fi networks.”

MDL MARINAS ROW FOR OYT WHITEHAVEN OPEN DAY MDL Marinas has launched an exciting charitable initiative which will see its team and members raise money for Ocean Youth Trust South by rowing a combined total of 910 miles to help raise funds. The company initiative has been created after being inspired by the Land Rover BAR team who, in preparation for the recent races, rowed a total of 910 miles in seven weeks. To conquer the challenge MDL will install rowing machines across 19 of its marinas starting in Northney, Queen Anne’s Battery, Penton Hook and Hythe Marina Village, where team members and customers will be challenged to row as far as they can to raise funds for such a worthy cause. The rowing challenge will culminate at TheYachtMarket. com Southampton Boat Show, which starts on 15 September, with a final ‘row in’. Ocean Youth Trust South is a Hampshire-based charity which specialises in using an ‘Adventure Under Sail’ concept to help young people develop confidence and the essential problem solving skills needed to succeed in life. MDL Marinas and Ocean Youth Trust South first came together in 1987 to create the Sail Training Awards, which recognise the outstanding efforts of young people who have faced exceptional challenges, or have gone above and beyond to support others. Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas, said: “The 35th America’s Cup may have come to an end for Land Rover BAR but what an incredible journey and one that MDL is honoured to be part of. The training begins

now for the 36th America’s Cup which we fully support. We are all very excited about the rowing challenge and are looking forward to seeing all of our team, as well as many of our willing members, row up a storm in one of our 19 UK marina locations.” www.mdlmarinas.co.uk

TALL SHIPS FROM PLYMOUTH MARINA

BERTH holders at Sutton Harbour Marina in Plymouth are being supported to build confidence when sailing on open water with the launch of a series of Cruise in Company voyages led by a locally-based tall ship. Sutton Harbour Marina has organised the Cruise in Company excursions in partnership with The Mórvargh Sailing Project to help its berth holders enjoy sailing out to ports on the Devon and Cornwall coast. Vessels berthed at the award-winning 5 Gold Anchor Marina in the heart of Plymouth will be able to join a flotilla of fellow berth holders as they sail their own boat to a prime South West destination. The boats will stay overnight at the destination, with berth holders enjoying an evening get-together, and return to Sutton Harbour Marina the following day. The Mórvargh Sailing Project is a wellestablished community interest company

offering potentially life-changing sail training experiences for young people on board its tall ship, Helen Mary R, which is based in Sutton Harbour. The Mórvargh team has just returned from circumnavigating the country with a crew of eight youngsters aged 14 to 19 on the ASPIRE360 challenge, which Sutton Harbour Marina helped to support. Cruise in Company destinations for summer 2017 include: Plymouth to Salcombe – Saturday 1 to Sunday 2 July Plymouth to Fowey – Saturday 19 to Sunday 20 August Plymouth to Falmouth – Friday 22 to Saturday 23 September Berth holders interested in taking part should contact the marina team on 01752 204702 or email marina@sutton-harbour.co.uk www.suttonharbourmarina.com 01752 204702

It is Whitehaven’s Marina Open Day on 15 and 16 July in partnership with Maiden Marine and WSBA. There is a cake and coffee

morning, BBQ, sail taster sessions, Sealock guided tours, boat jumble and much more. whitehavenmarina.co.uk

PLYMOUTH CREATES CATAMARAN BERTHS NEW berthing spaces have been launched to host catamaran boats at the marina at Sutton Harbour, based in the historic heart of Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City. The 5 Gold Anchor marina has widened some of its existing berths in Sutton Quay to accommodate the multi-hulled watercrafts. The extended berths offer dedicated spaces to accommodate catamaran or multi-hulled vessels, with new custom-designed berthing rates available. Mark Brimacombe, Manager of The Marina at Sutton Harbour, said: “We are really excited to be welcoming catamarans to our marina for the first time; there has been a huge amount of interest and we have already had some catamaran boats visit us to berth in the newly

created spaces this spring. We were seeing an increasing demand to host the vessels, so we decided to extend some of our existing berths to accommodate them.” www.suttonharbourmarina.com

£75M INVESTMENT FOR DARTMOUTH PREMIER Marinas is to submit its plans for the redevelopment of Noss on Dart marina. The £75m proposed investment in the site will be one of the largest infrastructure investments in the Dartmouth area for decades. The Noss site comprises 37 acres of foreshore and woodland, but Premier’s interest remains steadfastly on the marina. CEO Pete Bradshaw said: “We bought Noss simply because it is breathtakingly beautiful and that, along with the local cruising grounds, is what drives our customer’s choice of where to berth their boat. We recognise that Noss is a challenging site, 37 acres in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and we are sensitive to the constraints that creates. But we have successfully completed these projects before at our other marinas.

“Our guiding principle for the success of our business - and Noss on Dart - is to make sure that our berth holders enjoy their time in our marinas and key to that is customer service; we focus on every aspect of our facilities, from parking to quality shower facilities and site security, all with the aim of enhancing our customers’ boating experience.” Premier’s plans were drawn up after extensive consultation with the local community and their detailed application covers the marina, boatyard, commercial and administrative units, parking and a waterfront hotel. However, at this point, they are only asking for outline planning for most of the residential development because Premier is conscious that getting that part of the development right is crucial and it wants time to finesse its plans.

The detailed plans show a new marina layout for around 232 berths plus a dry stack berthing option for 100 or so smaller motor craft. Ashore there is provision for 70 summer boat storage spaces, extending to 100 in the winter. 21 commercial units will be built plus a new home for South Devon College. There will also be a new 75 tonne boat hoist and a new dock facility for lifting/ launching boats. Mindful of the heritage of the site, there will be a reinterpretation of the iconic Phillips building and, above a bistro café, a Heritage Centre will retell the site’s history. Similarly, Premier has consulted with the relatives of those who died during the bombing of the shipyard in WWII to find out how best to incorporate the memorial into the site design. The work is expected to take three years with residential following.

To prevent the inevitable twists and kinks which occur in ropes at the most inauspicious time, and provide greater embarrassment when handled at speed, it was found expedient to keep certain lines, such as log and sounding line, on reels. From here the lines could be ‘reeled off’ without delay or hazard. The term was later applied to anyone who spoke fluently or was especially adept at quoting facts and figures.

This Month 13 Years Ago… 28 July 2004

RNLI College is the home of RNLI training and was opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 28 July 2004, when it was known as the Lifeboat College. This distinctive building, with its wave-like roof and porthole windows, was first conceived as a training centre for lifeboat crews. Thousands of volunteer crew have since passed through its doors and into its classrooms, lifeboats, live engine workshops, bridge simulator and sea survival pool. The building has evolved and grown into a central home for the RNLI community.

A lot of American IPA beers are flooding into the UK market, some established brands like Sierra Nevada, others are interesting novelties brewed over here, like Punk IPA from Aberdeen’s Brewdog. They declare themselves as American Style IPA, so you could be fooled into thinking IPA was created in the USA. It is really a very British invention created in the 1780s (the USA was founded on 4 July, 1776) as the answer to the problem of providing beer for the British Empire in the east. It was too hot to brew in India, so what was needed was a beer that could survive the gruelling six-month journey by ship from Britain. Simplistically this is more hops, slower fermentation and higher ABV strength. Most UK breweries, mainstream and craft, already have a traditional IPA in their range. Greene King’s IPA (Bury St Edmonds) at 3.6 per cent is their flagship brand created more than 150 years ago, which they claim is the UK’s fastest selling IPA, on draft and in bottle. “Crisp and refreshing” it says on the label, and it is.

A good benchmark for the whole category. But the growth of so-called American-style IPAs has been enough to stimulate other UK brewers to defend market share with their own versions, many adorned with quirky graphics and names straight out of US westerns. Some are by English brewers for specific supermarkets with thinly disguised ‘own label’ offerings. Aldi, for example, has invented The Great British Brewing Co, which is actually just a collective labelling umbrella for a range of beers brewed for them by various established independent brewers, somewhat coyly referred to on the label as guest brewers. It is a pity they feel the need to make it seem there is a single brewery. Here are a few among many to illustrate the genre.

CRAFT GIN CLUB

After the disappointment of seeing Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team exit the America’s Cup in the semi-finals, there were huge celebrations when Britain’s youth America’s Cup sailors from the Land Rover BAR Academy were crowned 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Champions in Bermuda after a dramatic final that saw them beat defending champions NZL Sailing Team by just two points. Marston’s (Burton upon Trent) Old Empire IPA 5.7 per cent. This strength allows the beer to have great depth of flavour, malty and closer to the original brews sent to India versus the new American IPAs. Sharply refreshing on the tongue and an English ale golden-bronze colour. I bet the folk in India would have welcomed this arrival on the ship. Wild Bill’s American IPA ranch-style label, five per cent, is brewed for Aldi by Marston’s but labelled under the invented Harper’s Brewing Co banner. This is a good beer, shiny chestnut brown, malty and subtle bitter hops. Compare this with Land of Liberty IPA, also five per cent, which wins my vote for the best Americana graphics. Brewed for Aldi by Sadler’s Craft Ale (Stourbridge, near Birmingham) under the Great British Brewing Co banner, it is much lighter than Wild Bill’s, and is pale ginger like a lager, fresh and citrusy and slightly sweet. You can explore Sadler’s a bit more at their Brewhouse and Barbecue venue at 74 London Road, Southampton, featuring their IPA and eight other Sadler’s beers and offering an ‘authentic American BBQ’.
