SAilORS FiRSt tO bE nAMEd in Gb tEAM FROM PAGE 1: Announcing the selections for Rio, Mark England, Team GB’s Chef de Mission for Rio 2016, said: “The eight athletes include Olympic medallists and World Champions, all of whom have earned their place in the six boat classes. As one of our most successful medal winning sports it is fitting that sailing kicked-off our Rio 2016 team announcements.” Giles Scott’s is the first name to appear on the Rio team sheet. The 28-year-old, unbeaten in almost two years, is set to make his Olympic debut in the Finn class. Giles said: “I have been trying to get to the Games for a long time and I suppose it is something that always seemed miles out of reach, a bit of a dream. To be in the position to be selected for Team GB is a huge honour and to be going is a lifelong ambition. But clearly I want more from it than just to say I went. I now have 11 months to focus in on the one regatta and hopefully that will enable me to eradicate any noise that other peak regattas would bring in, hopefully it will enable me to be in a better and stronger position for 11 months’ time.”

Our focus is on great preparation, great support and great performance and, if we get that right, we will have delivered an environment that will allow the athletes to perform to the best of their ability.” Team GB is calling on the nation to Bring on the Great in the run-up to Rio 2016 - and at the Games themselves - as our athletes get ready to compete at the world’s greatest sports event. Fans can show their support by sending in their good luck messages to teamGb.com and joining the new Team GB Club. These messages will be displayed on flags which will be given to the athletes travelling to Rio as well as featuring on Bahia Bands, a traditional Brazilian good luck bracelet, which fans will be able to buy later this year.

Mini tRAnSAt

ThE President of the racecourse fired the starter’s pistol and by the end of the first part of the race in the Douarnenez Bay., the favourites were already pointing their bows towards the open ocean. The Mini Transat îles de Guadeloupe racers hardly had time to admire the landscape. Instead they had to watch their rivals, avoid collisions and consider their tactics for the best approach to the race in Douarnenez Bay. Just under a week later Davy Beaudart (Flexirub) was triumphant in the first stage in the Prototype Class taking 6 days 19 hours 04 minutes and 46 seconds to sail from Douarnenez to Lanzarote. Davy took the lead of the race early on and held on to it right to the finish. While Davy won the Prototypes Class, it was Ian Lipinski who took the Series Class just under 24 hours later. With most of the Prototypes arriving first, the rest of the fleet filled the pontoons of Lanzarote marina over the next few days including All at Sea columnist Lizzy Foreman who came in 35th in the Series Class. The Atlantic stage will start on 31 October. The sailors are expected to finish three weeks later in Pointe-à-Pitre to a warm Caribbean welcome. The 2,700 nautical mile race from France to the Caribbean is the longest solo race for the smallest of boats.

ALL AT SEA OCTOBER 2015

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde

LMAX Exchange first in Rio

Find out what Titan had to say to Jane on the All at Sea Facebook page Did you pick up a copy of All at Sea at the Southampton Boat Show?

Pip Hare talked about her racing career at the Southampton Boat Show

IT is hard to believe that London’s hugely successful Olympic Games were three years ago. However 2012 is a distant memory with all eyes now focussed on Rio next year. In All at Sea we have followed with interest the highs and lows of British sailors as they work to achieve their place in the GB team. It gives a great sense of pride for all the sailing community that the first members of 2016’s team are sailors. Sailing is, after all, one of Britain’s most successful Olympic sports. I loved the atmosphere at the events I went to at London 2012 and it is such as shame that due to distance British support will be far lower in Brazil. You can be sure, though, that the fans who do make the trip will be incredibly vocal in their support of the British athletes. One event that is always easily accessible is the Southampton Boat Show. Hopefully you picked up a copy of All at Sea during your visit. I had a very interesting day chatting to exhibitors and exploring some very impressive boats. The feedback I received was all very positive and although visitor numbers were down it was only by a couple of thousand. This is only a small amount, especially when you consider over 100,000 people passed through the show during the ten days. I had two highlights at the show. One was a first for me; I was chatted up by the lovely Titan, who is, of course, a very friendly robot and a guest on Landau UK’s stand. You can see the video of this romantic moment on the All at Sea Facebook page! My other show highlight was hearing Pip Hare talk about her

upcoming racing adventures. She is competing in the Transat Jacques Vabre with co-skipper Phillippa Hutton-Squire racing 5,400 miles from Le Havre, France to Itajai, Brazil. We will be running a Boating People interview with Pip after the race to find out more about her life as a solo and double-handed sailor. Pip Hare is just one of many inspirational women involved in watersports in all its forms. All at Sea’s own columnist Lizzy Foreman is currently taking part in the Mini Transat and former columnist Shelley Jory Leigh is a powerboat champion and great role model for the sport. With more women than ever taking up boating, for leisure and professionally, in this issue we are celebrating women in boating. From Lily Devine (see page 18), lead physiotherapist for the British Sailing Team, to Diane Reid (see page 19), skipper in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, we want to show that women are excelling in all areas of the sport. The industry is embracing the role of women in boating, both power and sail, and this is reflected in the growth of female only training courses and even boating holidays. Boating clubs, too, are see increasing numbers of women and long may it continue. If you know an inspirational woman in boating we would love to hear from you and share their story. Contact me at the usual address, on the All at Sea Facebook page or use the Twitter hashtag #inspirationalboatingwomen. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

LMAX Exchange, skippered by Frenchman Olivier Cardin, claimed victory in the opening stage of the tenth edition Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race after it crossed the finish line first in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro. As well as claiming the maximum 12 points for the win, LMAX Exchange also won three bonus points for crossing the Scoring Gate first, getting its race campaign started with a healthy 15 points. The team finished strongly, approximately 100 miles ahead of its nearest competitor. Despite some early errors, during the first week LMAX Exchange fought a close battle which saw little separation between it and GREAT Britain, and at times also Derry~Londonderry~Doire.

Olivier and his team then made a tactical decision to separate from their rivals to take the most coastal route, east of the Canary Islands, where it found the better trade winds. LMAX Exchange had to wait 36 hours to greet second placed Qingdao, followed by GREAT Britain in third, Derry~Londonderry~Doire in fourth and Garmin in fifth place. After 5,600nm of racing, the four teams made it to the Marina da Gloria within 14 hours of each other. Race 2: The Sormhoek Race to Cape of Storms Cape Town, South Africa, began on 7 October. Following the death of Andy Ashman, who died while sailing on IchorCoal, a lasting tribute to his memory has been

announced. A short section of the racetrack off the Brazilian coast, where extra points are awarded for the fastest team between two points, will be named in Andy’s honour. The winning team will receive a special trophy, the ‘Andy Ashman Memorial Plate’, in Rio and it will continue to be awarded in future editions. After time to reflect, the team of IchorCoal came to the unanimous decision to continue racing. Andrew’s brother Keith Ashman flew out to reinforce the family’s support for the team’s decision and waved them off as they headed out to resume racing. You can track the progress of the entire fleet via the Clipper Race Viewer at www. clipperroundtheworld.com/raceviewer LMAX Exchange claimed victory in the opening stage

YOUR LETTERS Dear All at Sea I picked up a copy of All at Sea and there, once again, is Boleh! I was sorry to learn that Roger Angel has Crossed the Bar as I did my RYA evening classes with him at Hastings Tech around 1971-72. I shared many a brew with him and Wendy when he was repairing Boleh in Rye after she was deliberately set on fire, and helped turn her round at Strand Quay one bitter New Year’s day. The next time we met, about 1985, I had piloted a Heavenly Twins cat from Chi to Vilamoura and, as we motored up to our berth, there was Wendy on the foredeck. I made some deliberately casual greeting, to which she replied, “Oh, hello Tone, I’ll put the kettle

on”. My fellow crew members were speechless! Then, a few weeks ago, I spotted those unique twin ‘ladders’ in Chi yacht basin and the memories came flooding back. I saw a copy of the original book and I think, from memory, that she was built in 1932 in Singapore dockyard for a retiring Naval officer. A second book is surely overdue! Thank you for a very interesting paper. Kind regards Tony Sutcliffe (RNVRYC) All at Sea: Thank you for your letter Tony. It is wonderful that Boleh is bringing back happy memories for so many readers.

NEWS IN BRIEF

GHOST BOAT DESTROYED An abandoned yacht has been sunk despite its owner trying to retrieve it. The story began around a year ago when Thomas Mallanut, from Germany, had to leave Troll when his wife became seriously ill while they were sailing off the coast of Bermuda. Although he did not expect to see it again, he was contacted by an Irish Maritime Patrol Aircraft and even went to Cornwall to try and retrieve the 25ft boat. However as the boat drifted past the Irish coast, the Irish Navy were ordered to board the vessel and sink it because it was a hazard to shipping.

MARINA BOUGHT

Cardiff Marine Group Ltd has announced the purchase of Aberystwyth Marina. Under the new ownership Aberystwyth Marina will benefit from a number of phased investments to upgrade the marina. Planned works include dredging of the marina, new pontoon configurations to improve the layout and increase capacity and upgrading of the infrastructure to improve the presentation and security of the marina.

APP OF THE MONTH

RYA SafeTrx provides recreational boat users who do not have or use AIS with a cheap, easy and reliable means that can inform the Coastguard of their voyage plans and dynamic location in the event of distress. The application is a fully automated, cost effective and ‘easy to use’ tool using smart phone technology to supplement traditional communications equipment and alerting methods to increase safety. Cruising Manager Stuart Carruthers explains: “A major focus in SafeTrx 2015 is to assist boater trip planning. With this in mind and in addition to the alerting and tracking function, RYA SafeTrx now has the ability to display live weather data. The addition of Personalised Checklists promotes further safety awareness by encouraging the boater to create and review a list of checklist items prior to departure. “The new Emergency Call feature also allows boaters to quickly activate a distress call from within the application, this also automatically sends their location to the SafeTrx monitoring console for use in search and rescue.” Download the new version of the App, free of charge, from the Apple App Store http://bit.ly/ RYAsafeTrx

JEANNE Socrates aboard Nereida, successfully completed a non stop, singlehanded, unassisted sail around the world on 8 July 2013, when she passed Ogden Point at the entrance to Victoria Harbour, 259 days after leaving Victoria in October 2012. This was her third attempt to circumnavigate solo, east about via Cape Horn and the Southern Ocean. All attempts were made without the help of a shore-based support team. “My team is simply ‘Nereida’ and me!,” said Socrates. Jeanne was welcomed to the Southampton Boat Show by Commodore Yachting and Boatshed.com. They brought a wheelbarrow full of their own brand Champagne to toast her success and raise a glass to Jeanne as she enters the Guinness Book of World Records, becoming the oldest woman to sail non stop, round the world. www.svnereida.com

ORIGINAL TRANSAT RETURNS

THE first ever single-handed ocean yacht race, originally staged in 1960, is set to return in 2016 when some of the world’s best solo sailors and most spectacular yachts will take on the classic 2,800 mile course of The Transat, from Britain to the United States. Fittingly the 2016 edition is returning to its original course with the start from Plymouth on 2 May and the finish line off Manhattan, New York, for the first time since the inaugural race 55 years ago. One of the classics of world sailing, The Transat has made the names of some of the greatest yachtsmen and women of the modern era, among them Sir Francis Chichester, Eric Tabarly, Dame Ellen MacArthur and Michel Desjoyeaux. It offers a tough and unrelenting challenge to windward across the wastes of the north Atlantic where hazards include ferocious storms, icebergs, freezing fog, whales and debris in the water. Over the years, The Transat has proved a

testbed for the latest innovations in yacht design and winning times have cascaded down from 40 days in 1960. The current monohull (IMOCA 60) record is 12 days, 11 hours and 45 minutes set by Loïck Peyron on board Gitana in 2008. The multihull (60ft) record is an astonishing 8 days, 8 hours, 29 minutes set by Michel Desjoyeaux on board Géant in 2004. Classes invited to take part in 2016 edition include Class 40 monohulls (40ft) and Multi 50 multihulls (50ft). Alongside them will be the IMOCA 60 Class (60ft), the world’s leading solo class, many of which will go on to contest the 2016 Vendée Globe non-stop solo round world race. In addition there will be what are likely to be the fastest entries, the Ultime multihulls, measuring anything from 60ft. Already several skippers have declared their intent to compete, among them Britain’s experienced short-handed racer Miranda Merron in the brand new Class 40, Campagne de France.

Laser’s new sail design THE International Laser Class Association has announced the release of a completely new class-legal design for the Laser standard rig sail. The release marks the first time in over 40 years that the Laser sail design has been substantially updated. Known as the Standard Mark II Sail, the new patented design is the result of thousands of hours of design work and on-the-water testing involving the Laser builders, the Association, two major sailmakers and some of the world’s top sailors. The Mark II features bi-radial panels, a heavier 4.5 ounce cloth and optimised reinforcement patches, all intended to maximize the sail’s competitive life. The sail also features tapered battens with Velcro batten pocket closures, a larger window for improved visibility and a patented re-designed luff tube to eliminate wrinkles at the mast joint. As with all changes to the Laser, the new sail has been carefully designed to be backwards compatible with the existing equipment, meaning it was not designed to provide improved performance. Instead, the Mark II promises improved durability and ease of use. The initial run of class-legal Mark II sails will be available from 1

November, with worldwide availability by early 2016. Because of the timing of the release, by agreement with International Sailing Federation, the Mark II will not be used in the 2016 Olympic Games or any Olympic country qualifying events for 2015 or 2016. The use of the sail will be controlled by the Notice of Race for each event until after the 2016 games. After that time, the Mark II will be allowed in all ILCA sanctioned regattas along with the original standard rig sail.

CALENDAR PRIZE BUNDLE After six months of competition, over 200 entries and the crowning of 12 winners the ilovesailing calendar 2016 was officially unveiled at the Southampton Boat Show. Winner Jane Green, who spotted the competition in All at Sea, along with her husband Clive, joined the RYA at the show to help celebrate the launch and collect her prizes. Along with her spot on the 2016 calendar; prizes included tickets to the Southampton Boat Show, a copy of the final printed calendar, a canvas print of her winning entry, a host of RYA goodies and of course the much loved ilovesailing rubber duck.

TALL SHIP SINKS

Zebu, one of Liverpool’s historic tall ships, has sunk in the famous Albert Dock. The boat, which had sailed 69,000 miles, featured on BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are programme in 2008. The ship has been based in Liverpool since 1988 and it is hoped that it will be raised once safety inspections have taken place.

AFTER six years of hard work, Alex Alley has launched his campaign to break the solo, non-stop, around the world record for boats less than 40ft. A professional sailor since the age of 19, he has represented his country and covered over 100,000 ocean racing miles. After racing in the Mini fleet for several years, he became involved in the world of Class 40s—high performance 40ft monohulls. Since that moment he has been looking at how he can race one around the world. “Trying to find a single major sponsor was proving to be difficult, so I then decided to spread the cost and look for ten sponsors, sharing the cost of the campaign. Then I just kept breaking the model down and thought—why not have thousands of sponsors, individuals, each putting a small amount in the kitty? The PixelBoat concept was born.”

The idea is to cover the hull of the Class 40 with literally thousands of 5cm x 5cm squares (over 6,000 in fact) and sell them off. People can upload an image or logo that will be printed on the hull of the boat and also go on the team’s website with a link to their own website. “This gives people something real they can actually see out on the water and feel really involved in the campaign. It took us two days to draw all the squares on to the hull of our Akilaria RC2 and start applying the pixels of those already sold. It is organic—we do not know what it will look like once it is covered, I love it.” The goal of the campaign now is firmly set on breaking the Round the World record for this type of boat. The current record, set in 2013, stands at 137d 20h 1m 57s. www.alexalley.com. Find out more in November’s All at Sea

At the Southampton Boat Show the RYA held a reception to celebrate the continued support of those members who have held membership for 50 years or more. In the first event of its kind, of the 177 members, 45 went to the reception. Joined by friends and family, guests enjoyed an afternoon tea and mingled with members of RYA staff including RYA CEO Sarah Treseder. Each of the members was presented with a specially designed 50 year membership pin and certificate. Watch the video on the All at Sea Facebook page.

NEWS IN BRIEF THUNDERING WIN

the 2015 thunderCat team Championship has gone to James tapp and ed Redman driving Microlink / Ahmad tea. A typically understated tapp commented on his 4th thunderCat Racing title, ”team 33 pushed us hard in the second half of the season, it made it really interesting, ed and I have to thank Vee Ganjavian and Microlink for their fantastic support.” ten teams from Britain will be now making the trip to Malta for an ‘out and out’ onslaught for World Championship honours in mid October.

MYLOR’S BIG LIFT

Bigger boats than ever before can be lifted from the water at Mylor Yacht Harbour this autumn with the arrival of a state-of-the-art Roodberg HBC38 boat transporter. the cutting edge technology of the Roodberg means it can be submerged to pick vessels of up to 38 tonnes out of the Mylor waters and safely manoeuvre them to anywhere on site – without the need for a travel lift.

SPEEDING UP COWES

Visiting seafarers at Cowes Yacht Haven are enjoying faster internet speeds now that the marina and WightFibre have installed a free high-speed Wi-Fi service across the whole site. this will allow users to browse web pages and update social media. A premium paid-for service is also available for those looking to stream films or television (£3 per day, £5 for three days, £10 per week or £25 per month).

THE SHOW IS OVER

As the Southampton Boat Show drew to a close, figures showed more than 110,000 people enjoyed a taste of Britain’s biggest boating festival. Although attendance was slightly down on last year strong sales were reported throughout the duration of the Show, with many companies reporting an increase on last year’s figures including multi-million pound deals.

CLASSIC MOVE

the Royal london Yacht Club, organisers of Charles Stanley Cowes Classics Week, with title sponsor Charles Stanley, have decided to move the event in 2016 two weeks earlier than previously scheduled, to be held from 11 - 15 July. Peter taylor, Commodore of the Royal london Yacht Club and Principal Race Officer for the regatta, explained it was to avoid clashing with any other major regatta hosted in Cowes, and to extend the gap between Classics Week and Cowes Week.

Happy birthday Green blue THe green Blue is celebrating ten years of successfully helping boat users, boating businesses, sailing clubs and training centres reduce their impact on coastal and inland waters. The green Blue Project Manager Jane Swan said: “Of course, awareness of environmental issues has increased over the past decade, so to some extent we have been able to capitalise on new generations of boaters who have grown up with a more willing understanding and acceptance of how important simple changes are like turning off taps. But if you take a look around most sailing clubs and marinas today, it is clear that the boating sector has really taken to environmental change.” There is still more work to be done to protect the future sustainability of our marine ecosystem. By working towards an environmentally selfregulating boating community, The green Blue aims to make efficiency savings, avoid red tape,

help boaters and boating businesses minimise their impact on the environment, and safeguard the waters and habitats we enjoy and rely on for the future. www.thegreenblue.org.uk

FOUR riders on horseback, who appeared to be crossing the Thames, have been creating quite a stir in London. They were actually sculptures commissioned to highlight the role the river has played in shaping London’s history. It is all about timing, though, as the four 3m tall working horses were concealed and revealed by the tide each day. Part of the Totally Thames arts festival ‘The Rising Tide’ was designed by internationallyrenowned underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. Many sailing clubs from Weymouth and Portland took part in Bart’s Bash, the global sailing event in memory of Sailor, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. The event held in Bart’s name saw 116 boats and 190 people taking to the water in Portland harbour. Thousands of sailors from across 62 countries took part in the event in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, which uses sailing to transform the lives of young people, both locally and across the world.

New outBoard oN show

honda (UK) unveiled the upgraded honda BF2.3 outboard engine at the Southampton Boat Show. The BF2.3’s new features include a 10 per cent larger fuel tank, for extended run time, and a larger fuel cap design, making it even easier to remove and secure when re-fuelling. It also has a redesigned engine cover that compliments the rest of the honda outboard range. Other modifications include a new oil drain bolt, ePA standard fuel pipe and a clutch housing that incorporates a breather.

Many of the world’s greatest sailing names signed up to participate on the Olympic waters including British Olympic Gold Medallists and Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation Trustees, Sir Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy OBe and members from the British Sailing Team past and present, who all took part in a variety of boats with their friends and family. Sir Ben and Iain, both in the middle of America’s Cup campaigns, took some time out from sailing high speed catamarans

to enjoy some time with their friends. Iain sailed in a dinghy with friend Anthony ‘Nocka’ Nossiter and Freddie Simpson and Ben took part with close friend Matt Cornwell aka Catflap in a 49er FX. Organisers report that in excess of 25 million metres have been sailed around the world already with many results yet to be added. highlight’s footage is available to watch on the event’s website www.bartsbash.com.

turkey stays beautifully warm right up to end of October so extend your summer with an end of season sailing trip along the turquoise Coast.

MeMBeRS of the harbour Advisory Committee paid a site visit to the new Cowes Breakwater to get a close-up view of the 350m long structure and learn about the construction process from contractor Boskalis Westminster. Boskalis Westminster has made good progress with the installation of the rock armour protection to the breakwater in spite of bad weather causing some delays to rock barge operations. Practical completion of the breakwater is due in the third week of October. The homes and Communities Agency has indicated that the planned east Cowes development is progressing well and developers

are planning to start work on the construction of the proposed Victoria Marina in the winter of 2016 and towards spring of 2017. The dredging of the new marina will most likely be carried out at the same time as the dredging of the harbour’s new eastern Channel. A seasonal restriction of carrying out dredging works in the winter months only, due to the summer growing season of the protected eelgrass beds on the Shrape, means that the next phases of the harbour infrastructure works (eastern Channel dredge and Shrape extension) are also likely to begin in the autumn/winter of 2016 to 2017.

YOUR STORIES

A Close Shave with the America’s Cup WE leave Gosport in my Legend 33 Beachcomber on a cruise to Weymouth. Our plan is to go down the Solent on the ebb tide and spend the night at Studland. It is the Monday before the America’s Cup Regatta in the Solent. We meet a fresh south-westerly wind in the Solent. It means we cannot sail due west; we have to tack. The best heading we can make on our first tack is Seaview. A mile out, I notice the unmistakable profile of five America’s Cup boats a long way to windward. They appear to be out practicing before the racing at the end of the week. They look to be milling about at a start line. This is confirmed when they shoot off together, on their foils, toward the Isle of Wight. Soon they round a distant mark, leaving it to port, still a long way off. “I don’t like this,” says my crewmate Robin. They round another mark. Now well downwind of us and sailing in the direction of Southsea, they seem to be sailing a box or diamond shape, a box with us in the middle. Then two boats turn to windward and pass well inshore of us. But the third turns and heads straight for us. “Let’s get out of here,” says Robin. “We are getting out of here,” I say.

“What can we do? says Robin. “We can maintain our course and speed. We are on starboard tack; we have right of way,” I tell him. He doesn’t look reassured. “I don’t like it,” Robin repeats himself. I stare at this charging super boat, hulls in the air, heading straight at us. I try to maintain calm by saying, “These are the best sailors in the world, they will not ram us. Anyway, it would damage their boat and ruin their reputation.” Hurtling closer, at who knows how many knots, this flying machine has our full attention. It is still too far away for me to shout “starboard”, for all the good that will do. A 100m away the helmsman bears away by a few degrees. Seconds later the boat flies past, no more than 20 metres behind our transom. All I can see is three or four men wearing helmets and shades, crouched down on the windward hull. Robin says one of them gives us the thumbs up. “Which boat was that?” I ask. “That was the British one,” he replied. “You mean Sir Ben?” We continue up the Solent hoping for quieter waters. POWER NEWS

ALL AT SEA OCTOBER 2015

VECTOR DEFENDS CLASSIC TROPHY VECTOR Martini Racing successfully defended last year’s trophy by finishing first in both races, and overall, at the prestigious annual Cowes Classic Offshore Powerboat Race. The race, also known as CowesTorquay-Cowes, is regarded as one of the toughest powerboat races in the world. The Team, consisting of experienced pilot Peter Dredge, Malcom Crease and Simon Powell, was joined by model David Gandy, who competed for the first time in an official race. The race started from Egypt Point on the Isle of Wight and the powerboats crossed over 90 nautical miles to Torquay, before returning to finish right outside the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes. According to the race organiser, this year’s event saw one of the best turnouts of boats, as well as spectators, who watched from hundreds of boats as well as a variety of locations along the south coast.

YOUNG POWERBOATERS CLAIM VICTORY AT SHOW MAX Mawer and Ollie Pirt were triumphant at the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship National Final, held at the Southampton Boat Show. Everyone can enjoy the view from the flybridge that includes a twin helm seat, a large L-shaped sofa that converts into a sunpad and a seating area aft with a folding table. A refrigerated icebox is fitted as standard and a wetbar with BBQ is available as an option. A sociable layout can also be found in the deck saloon with panoramic windows and features an aft-galley that can be fitted with a full-height fridge/freezer. This leads onto the cockpit with U-shaped seating and a folding teak table to further enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. www.princessyachts.com

The greatest honour Image: Andre Bittencourt/British Sailing Team

In this month’s British Sailing Team column, double 470 World Champion Elliot Willis celebrates his first ever Olympic Games call-up, having been officially named on the team sheet for Rio.

OLYMPIC campaigning has been a long road for me, so it is fantastic to know that I now finally have the chance to race for gold at an Olympic Games. Luke Patience and I were among the first eight athletes – all sailors – to be selected for Team GB for Rio. Even though we have not had a clear competitor in our 470 class trials this time around, I have been trying for a long time to make it to the Games, so to have that finally confirmed is an exciting moment. It is the greatest honour that you can get as a young kid. You grow up looking to the Olympic figureheads within your sport and suddenly you are part of it. I started sailing in the Optimist at Chipstead Sailing Club, going off the end of the pontoon with a big push from my dad. From that point on we started to do Wednesday evening races and it all went from there. FAMILY SUPPORT There has been an incredible amount of support throughout my career from the local area, but especially from my parents. I would not have achieved what I have today without them For example, taking me all around Europe with the Optimist on the car roof. The selection milestone was as much an

important moment for them as it was for me. They celebrated with my fiancée and me on the night I got the good news from our team manager Stephen Park. Selection day itself was exciting with lots of media activity and many firsts – including wearing make-up for an early morning TV interview. But for both Luke and myself, being selected is really just a small but important step towards what we ultimately want to achieve next year in Rio. We want to be there on the start line in 2016 with a real shot at winning gold, so we will be working towards optimising our racing, our equipment and everything towards the challenges we expect from Rio as a venue. THIRD TIME LUCKY This is my third Olympic campaign, with Beijing being my closest chance of selection before now when I was sailing with Nic Asher. That China cycle was particularly tough, missing out on the 2008 Games due to an injury, having been crowned World Champion in 2006 and again in 2008. It really felt like a bitter blow. I think having campaigned before allows also you to take things away and apply them to improve in a new campaign. Luke and I are in a great place because of that, having sailed before with different people in different ways,

Elliot was among the first eight athletes – all sailors – to be selected for Team GB. Image: RYA

and at different points of our lives. We are getting on a bit now – I am 32 and he is 29 - and you get a little bit older and a little bit wiser in this sport. I certainly think we can apply that in Rio. We are looking to sail as much as we can out in Rio between now and the Games. It is a very tricky venue tidally and requires a very diverse sailor. Every day seems like a new regatta and it can be quite hard to find a rhythm. The best sailor will win, like at every regatta, but it will be a war of attrition throughout the Olympic Games and a mentally tough, all-round sailor will perform well there. I think Luke and I have all those attributes

and I hope we will go on to achieve what we know we are capable of next summer. Sailing is a fantastic sport and has brought so much to my life. It is great that there is an infrastructure now within sailing clubs and through the RYA that allows people to go and try sailing and experience it for themselves for little cost. For any young sailor with an Olympic dream I would say specialise in what you are good at, pick a class that you are sized correctly for and pursue it with all you have got. Maybe one day you will get your chance too. The 470 World Championships run from 10 - 17 October in Haifa, Israel.

Ready for repairs

When making minor repairs Sikaflex® -291i can be applied to provide seals both inside and to the exterior of a boat. It can be used for various jobs such as sealing screw holes and bonding fittings. It bonds well to a wide variety of substrates including wood, metals, metal primers and paint coatings, ceramic and GRP. Sikaflex® -291i, available in black or white, is now available in a compact 70ml tube for minor repairs on board. £9.50 www.sikamarine.co.uk

Some boat cleaners can damage flexible and rigid plastic surfaces due to alcohols or ammonias causing plastics to dry out and scratch, blush and yellow. However VuPlex is non-toxic with no solvents that harm plastics; simply spray on and wipe off with a soft cloth to completely clean, polish and protect the plastic. Surfaces are left clear and polished, static free, with an invisible micro-layer of protection that repels dust, dirt and fingerprints and resists grime from ingressing into the surface causing damage over time. www.swobbit.eu Let us know your boat cleaning tips!

The SOS ladder allows boaters who go for a swim or accidentally fall overboard to get back onto the boat with ease. It is difficult or near impossible to lift a person in wet clothes from the water level to the deck of a boat. The SOS Ladder is rescue ready as it can be used in conjunction with lifting halyards attached to the outer end of the ladder to assist hoisting a person on board. The ladder is incorporated and packed into a high visibility neon yellow mesh bag weighting around 3.3 kilos and folded is only 500mm x 300mm. www.sosmarine.com

The Zhik Zfleece® jacket is soft and cosy and is made with hollow fibres, which trap more air and provide excellent insulation with very little weight. ZFleece is available in a fitted women’s cut, with a race cut collar and elastic trimmed cuffs and hem, which mean you can easily layer up underneath foul weather gear without adding bulk. The jacket is available in women’s size XS-XL in black. £99 https://www.zhik.com

Easy to store and great to wear, the Women’s Pack It Wellies (pictured above right) can be packed away into their own bag making them a great option for boaters. As well as the more traditional olive colour they are available in the more glamorous purple too. £50 www.cotswoldoutdoor.com Alternatively there is the Women’s Bogs Plimsoll Herringbone Tall, which has a modern take on the tried-andtested Bogs® Classics. EXPERTS’ FORUM

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

LILY DEVINE, PHYSIOTHERAPIST

A TYPICAL DAY FOR LILY It depends whether I am working from our Performance Unit in Portland or travelling away. As I am currently away at a regatta this is my day:

DEVINE INSPIRATION

I qualified as a physio in 2002 and like most physios I worked for four years in the NHS, getting my basic training and development done. Alongside this I did lots of volunteer and evening work with small sporting teams to build up my experience. In 2005/06 I got a bit of a break and got a job with Saracens RFC where I

looked after the academy. After the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics I knew I wanted to be involved in Olympic and Paralympic sport and was lucky enough to get a job working for the English Institute of Sport, where I worked with Great Britain Rowing, and then UK Athletics before moving to the British Sailing Team. It is my role to ensure that the sailors are in as best physical condition as possible, so that they can sail the last race of a regatta the same as the first race. It is about trying to prevent any injuries from occurring, and where this isn’t possible, getting the injuries fixed as quickly as possible, to minimise the amount of time off the water. I love working with the best sailors in the world, and an incredibly dedicated support team who are always trying to improve the service that we offer. For me the biggest test has to be the travel. We are away a lot and that can be difficult for lots of reasons, but primarily it is a challenge trying to provide the same level of support that we do at home when we are away on the road. Plus I miss home when I am away.

■ Early morning and a bit of exercise ■ Walk to the boat park and touch base with all the athletes and coaches and check they are alright ■ Pre-sailing warm up exercises with the sailors ■ Some individual treatment or pre-sailing taping for those ■ Lunch ■ Touch base with other support staff and sailors not at this competition ■ Bit of admin – emails, medical notes, project work, reading (you can always learn something) ■ When people come off the water: Post sailing treatment Post sailing recovery options including massage, stretching

TOP TIPS – PHYSIOTHERAPY CAREER ■ You need a degree in physiotherapy and preferably some post graduate education or development in sport physiotherapy. ■ Do your physio degree and learn as much as you can. ■ Try and get as much experience/ exposure ■ Sports physiotherapy as you can – volunteering, shadowing and so on ■ Work hard.

BOATING PEOPLE

However, I do not see life as a Clipper Race skipper as being “one of the two female skippers”. I am one of the twelve Clipper Race skippers. All twelve of us are here because we have worked very hard to be the best at what we do. There is no doubt that sailing is a male dominated sport, but sailing is one of the few sports that men and women can compete against each other equally. It is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical sport and as such means that it is a fairly level playing field. At the end of the day it is about being skilled in the art of sailing, the mental ability to cope when life at sea and the physical strength of racing to manage the power of these fantastic Clipper 70s.

Q&A WITH DIANE REID, CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD YACHT RACE SKIPPER

1. HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO SAILING?

My family took me sailing from the moment I was born. I was not even old enough to sit up and I was sailing on our 26ft cruiser. Later on I got involved in Sea Cadets and started sailing in the summers.

5. DO YOU THINK YOU WILL BE INSPIRING OTHER WOMEN SAILORS TO TAKE ON CHALLENGES LIKE THIS?

2. WHAT OTHER SAILING EVENTS HAVE YOU TAKEN PART IN?

Recently I campaigned and raced in the 2013 Mini Transat race. Prior to that my husband and I did some international campaigns in our 26ft Thunderbird, which is a local one design class day racer.

I would love to inspire not only women sailors, but individuals who are cautious to take on challenges. Life is amazing when you live it and experience it to its fullest. To triumph over our battles regardless of their scale is absolute adrenaline and the pride one feels in these accomplishments puts a spark in our step. To be able to say “I did that” is a pretty amazing thing in life. I would love to inspire people to say “I did that”.

3. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START RACING COMPETITIVELY?

It has always been in my blood. Probably because I was a dinghy sailor from such a young age and it is a strong part of the dinghy training culture. Nevertheless, I have always naturally gravitated toward challenges and wanting to win.

6. TELL US WHAT IT WILL BE LIKE TAKING PART IN THE CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD YACHT RACE.

4. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ONE OF TWO FEMALE SKIPPERS IN THE CLIPPER RACE?

I think it will be one of the toughest and most amazing experiences of my life. It is a chance for me to bring my two passions together. I love teaching sailing and sharing that passion with others. I also

Incredibly exciting and proud to be part of such an elite and talented group.

love racing and the adrenaline rush that comes with it. It is addictive!

7. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

Go for it! Make a plan for how you are going to get there and give it everything you have got. Whatever your dream is, hold on to it and make it happen. Then… live your next dream!

8. WHAT IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

I have two. They are both equal. The first is campaigning for four years to get to the start line of the Mini Transat race. The second is achieving the position of Clipper Race Skipper and all that it holds.

11. WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

My ultimate hero is Sam Davies. She is the epitome of class and skill. I will never forget watching her do cartwheels through the cockpit of her Imoca 60 Roxy, while being positively pummeled with wind in the southern ocean. That is how to face life. I am also inspired by Alex Bennet who speaks so passionately about the work ethic of engaging with business partners in the world of yacht racing. This too is something that I hold near and dear to my heart. Without our business partners, professional sailors would not exist. Ensuring that they get more than their return on investment is my job and I love doing it. To stay up-to-date with the Clipper Race standings see clipperroundtheworld.com/ race/standings

WOMEN IN BOATING CELEBRATING THE SUCCESSES OF FEMALE SAILORS

WOMEN ON WATER

We are seeing increasing numbers of women turning to boating not only for leisure and competition but as a career choice. Every year more gender barriers are being broken down and women’s successes in all areas are being celebrated.

Transporting boats 1950s style

BRITISH Marine’s survey findings showed that a rising number of women and people over 55 are getting into boating. This should come as no surprise as we simply need to look around boating clubs, shows and events to confirm these results. In fact the number of women taking part in boating activities has been rising steadily over the past few years and is now at 6.2 per cent of the population, which is the joint-highest level since BM began gathering this type of data 13 years ago. Yes, the numbers of women in boating are still lower than men but as Howard Pridding, chief executive of British Marine, said: “The figures for the number of people participating in boating and watersports are encouraging but there’s also plenty of room for growth.” More than ever before women are being encouraged to take up boating and any other sport come to that. You have only to look at the all female Team SCA in the recent Volvo Ocean Race and the female skippers in the Clipper Round The World Race to see what is achievable.

Fashions might have changed by women but the passion to win remains

“For many women training and learning with fellow females can make the process less daunting and more enjoyable.”

CAN DO ATTITUDE This positive attitude towards women in sport is a natural development but is also the result of campaigns like Sport England’s This Girl Can. This is a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets. Activities range from archery to zumba with plenty of watersports in between. Every year we hear about new achievements made by women, new records, historic barriers removed. A great example of gender inequality that ended this year was the Cambridge and Oxford Boat Race. 2015 marked the first time in the 70th staging of the women’s event that the Women’s Boat Race was held on the same course and same day as the men’s.

WHILE there is an inherent risk in all marine-based industries, advancements in safety and navigation equipment have helped

to mitigate some of that risk. In my experience women tend to be more safety conscious and detail oriented, which makes us an excellent asset to any crew working in a dangerous occupation. There will always be men in society who are patronising towards women. The camaraderie found in the majority of the commercial fishing industry far outweighs the petty few who do not recognize the capabilities of women employed in marine occupations. If you do your job, put in your time and take care of your vessel you will earn the respect of your fellow fishermen, gender notwithstanding. In the past decade I have seen a tremendous increase in the number of women working in the commercial

fishing industry, not only as captains and crew, but also in marine science, wholesale distribution and fisheries management. I would like to see more programs and opportunities that encourage women to consider marinebased occupations. I would advise any woman considering a career in a maledominated industry to connect with women already working in that field. I have found great inspiration and support from other women in the commercial fishing industry. Commercial fishing is one of the few male-dominated occupations that guarantees equal pay, the catch is worth the same price on the dock regardless of the gender of the captain.

Former Cambridge rower Annie Vernon said, “It is remarkable how far we have come. The first race, in 1927, was staged after much discussion of whether they could wear shorts, or their more demure gym tunics. One of the Cambridge rowers had to sit on a stool in front of university staff, simulating the action of rowing, to ascertain which clothes best preserved her modesty.” Although women are increasingly taking part in competition against men – one of the few sports where this is possible – victories remain elusive. The Round the Island Race’s Gold Roman Bowl has only been won twice by women: Mrs Tobin on Barbar in 1954 and Julia Dane on Glass Onion in 1982. Team SCA, though, in the Volvo Ocean Race showed the men how to do it when they became the first all female

crew to win a leg of the race in 25 years. Skippered by Briton Sam Davies, they won the eighth and penultimate 647mile stage, from Lisbon to Lorient, by more than 48 minutes. They were also the first all-female crew to enter the race in over a decade. TRAINING For many women training and learning with fellow females can make the process less daunting and more enjoyable. It is no surprise, then, that there are more and more women only RYA training courses taking place at clubs up and down the country. Girls for Sail is the UK’s only sailing school for ladies. They offer RYA sailing courses, holidays and world class racing events for women. Starting with RYA Competent Crew courses, you can work

INSPIRATIONAL SAILORS

There are so many inspirational female sailors it is impossible to mention them all. We would love to hear who has inspired you. Dame Ellen MacArthur – in 2001 she came second in the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world sailing race and in 2005 she broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe. Dee Caffari MBE - in 2006 she became the first woman to sail single-handedly and non-stop around the world ‘the wrong way’. In 2009, Dee completed the Vendée Globe race and set a new record to become the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world in both directions. Sam Davies - she has competed in two Vendée Globe races, finishing in fourth place in 2008. She skippered Team SCA in the latest Volvo Ocean Race. Tracey Edwards MBE - in 1989 she skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, becoming the first woman to receive the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy. Shirley Robertson OBE – she was the first British woman to win two Olympic gold medals at consecutive games, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. Shirley was named female World sailor of the Year by the International Sailing Federation in 2000. Helena Lucas MBE – in 2012 she became the first British sailor ever to win a Paralympic gold medal. She was the only woman in the fleet of 16 sailors in the 2.4 mR - 1 person keelboat event. Jeanne Socrates – in 2013 she became the oldest woman to sail solo round the world non-stop. This was the 70-year-old’s third attempt to complete the 25,000-mil circumnavigation on her 38ft yacht Nereida. Sarah Ayton OBE - she won a gold medal in the Yngling sailing class in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, together with Shirley Robertson and Sarah Webb, and another gold medal in the Yngling sailing class in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, with Pippa Wilson and Sarah Webb. Pip Hare - Pip is the only British sailor to ever finish the international mini transat race twice as well as winning the 2010 Two Handed Round Britain and Ireland Race overall with coskipper Phil Stubbs. Natasha Lambert Natasha has cerebral palsy and using the ‘sip and puff’ technique has sailed from Cowes around the south coast of England and across to Wales before climbing Pen y Fan, the

HOW DID YOU GET INTO BOATING? WE first featured Natalie Draper and her family’s boat Caronia in May 2015. Here Natalie explains how she got into boating. Share your stories too by emailing editor@allatsea.co.uk Growing up on the South Coast I have spent a large amount of my life either on or by the water. Before I could even walk up a gang-plank or climb a boarding ladder, our family photo album shows me barely a year old, wrapped up in a cosy wheelhouse, watching my father Peter Draper and his friends fishing or preparing to dive from their Seafarer 21 known as Griffin. When I was 11 our father bought Caronia, a 1927 Cornish fishing trawler who also assisted in Operation Dynamo in 1940, forever classifying her as a Dunkirk Little Ship. At over 40ft in length and with room for over six people to live aboard, Caronia created new and bigger adventures for us all. The addition of Lilly, a Jack Holt built Vagabond gunter- rig sloop was the perfect companion to Caronia, as we learnt to row and sail in the idyllic Chichester Harbour where Caronia was moored. Spending our

weekends and school holidays aboard, our historical and practical knowledge of boating grew, as our father commenced the lengthy process of restoring Caronia back to her original glory. Looking back I remember not only the opportunities boating has offered me, such as the chance to sail in the Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012, but also the significant family memories spent afloat, such as

celebrating Christmas and birthdays in Caronia’s homely saloon and how her wheelhouse and chart table also offered me the perfect environment in which to study for my GCSEs and A Levels. Now, having recently graduated with my Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the coastal University of Portsmouth, it is clear that growing up on and around boats has played a major role in my life, and will continue to.

HOLIDAYS However it is not just the courses as there are many ladies only boating holidays. One example is Sunsail’s Ladies Only Weeks which are designed to bring out the inner Ellen MacArthur. These weeks are an opportunity for women to sail in the company of other women, either meeting new people or sharing a boat with a group of existing friends. Over the course of the week, students can gain their Competent Crew or Day Skipper qualifications. GET TO WORK In an industry that brings £2.93 billion worth of turnover to the UK economy and employs 31,500 people, it has female stars shining through its historically male dominated workforce. Now more than ever before women are starting off their careers at marine companies like Sunseeker International, Princess Yachts and Pendennis Shipyard. They all have female engineer apprentices in their employment. These apprenticeships are vital for shaping the future infrastructure of the industry’s workforce and getting more women at the heart of Britain’s most prestigious marine companies.

ALL AT SEA OCTOBER 2015

Lizzy, 24, has been sailing since she was three and hopes to one day compete in the Vendée Globe. This autumn she is taking part in the solo transatlantic yacht race, the Mini Transat.

TAKING ON THE MINI TRANSAT

preparing for the Mini transat Lizzy is one of only four women competing amongst 74 solo sailors in the 2015 Mini Transat ÎLES DE GUADELOUPE. All at Sea caught up with Lizzy as she finalised her preparations before setting off from Douarnenez, France.

What did you do in the build-up to the Mini transat? With a solid background in shorthanded sailing, experience of campaign management and having taken a preparateur role at the 2013 Mini Transat, I had a really busy spring and summer in 2014 competing in a number of races including the Azores race (over 2,300 nm) to qualify for the 2015 Mini Transat in my Mini 6.50 Hudson Wight (#633), logging over 4,000nm miles in the Mini 6.50. hoW did you prepare for a race like the Mini transat? Throughout the year I do regular physical training - running, swimming and core work - with the fitness coaches at Lorient Grand Large (Offshore training centre) and the local triathalon club. Mental preparation - having the ability to withstand tough situations

I am creating a ‘road book’ which gives me reminders on the best route to take in different wind conditions and wind strengths. My strategy will vary depending on the size and stability of the Azores high and the movement of the low pressure systems across the Atlantic.

and to push yourself to the limit has been gained through offshore races and deliveries and by taking part in really tough physical races such as the Haute Route (a seven day cycling race in the mountains). I have also prepared the boat from top to bottom for the transatlantic crossing - a new mast, electronics, rigging, ropes, rudder brackets, hardware and fresh antifoul.

Everything at risk of breaking has been replaced (the boat is over 10 years old now and has done two Transats). race tactics - anything you are able to share? The most strategic parts of the race are: 1. The crossing the Golfe de Gascogne 2. Rounding Cape Finisterre 3. Utilising the trade winds to Guadeloupe

What excites you Most about finally setting off? Simply the joy of being back on the water for days at a time - it has taken so much time, financial and physical commitment to get to the start line that I absolutely must get to the other side - not just for myself but for all those who have believed in me and supported me along the way!” What scares you Most about finally setting off? I am most worried about making a mistake with the weather forecast and consequently sailing in the ‘wrong’

direction. Our only source of weather information is by SSB, at 0700 each day. The signal can be quite poor so it is not easy to decipher the information. The rounding of Cape Finisterre is likely to be difficult as well - the coast line is scary, with huge high cliffs and often strong winds - I remember in the Azores race last year taking 35-40 knots! Lizzy arrived in Lanzarote after the first stage in 35th place in the Series Class. www.minitransatilesdeguadeloupe.fr/?lang=en

GREEN FOCUS

The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms.

JANE SWAN

Promoting Change Of late and in no small part thanks to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, sustainability has become a regular feature of major events and sailing is no exception. SPORTING events are no strangers to being used as political platforms; take the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics or the human rights protests surrounding the 2008 Beijing Games as just two examples. Ben Ainslie and Susie Thompson with the ISO20121 certificate

Some might argue that the Olympics were never designed as a political or human rights platform, but it is not surprising that in this modern era with large audiences, corporate support and media interest, not to mention a heightened expectation around corporate social responsibility, any major event – sporting or otherwise – is going to present a valuable opportunity to promote social change. It may seem hypocritical for major events to promote environmental sustainability when their very existence encourages mass consumption, but not only can they seek to minimise the impact with good event management but also persuade their audiences to change behaviours. CERTIFIED IN SAILING The sailing world is leading the way with the Barcelona World Race becoming certified to ISO 20121 (an international standard for sustainable event management) and even the world governing body ISAF requiring its World Cup

events to use the ISO 20121 framework. The recent ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland was hosted at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, which The Green Blue helped become the world’s first organisation certified to ISO 20121. In February this year, Ben Ainslie Racing was awarded the Olympic-inspired international standard too. Land Rover BAR is the only sports team in the UK to achieve the certification across all its activities and sustainability in its widest form (encompassing environmental, social and financial benefits). It has been integrated into every aspect of the team’s running - from its BREEAM Excellent standard new headquarters in Old Portsmouth to its role in the World Series America’s Cup in Portsmouth in July. With the America’s Cup attracting so much media and public attention, it is a huge opportunity to use the spotlight to inspire, engage and lead change. WORLDWIDE EVENTS In July, The Green Blue’s US equivalent, Sailors for the Sea, and their Portuguese counterpart teamed up with the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover Lisbon and helped the event achieve silver level in their Clean Regatta programme. Practical initiatives on the ground were aimed at resource management with 97 waste and recycling bins around the race village for its 200,000 visitors, paper-free race results and 85 per cent of single-use tableware eliminated amongst other objectives. GREEN BLUE DAY In August, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week once again designated the first Saturday of the regatta as ‘Green Blue Day’ to raise awareness of sustainable boating amongst the 1,000 boats, 8,500 competitors and 100,000 spectators.

MINI MASTER CLASS PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

The ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland was hosted at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, which was the first organisation certified to ISO 20121

Kickstarted in 2013 by Sunsail, Cowes’ Official Sailing Charter Partner (and also a current holder of the ISO 20121 standard), ‘Green Blue Day’ is fast becoming a regular feature in the regatta calendar. Created on the back of Sunsail’s partnership with The Green Blue, the day has been embraced by Cowes Week to promote its commitment to sustainable sailing and act as the perfect platform to raise awareness of marine stewardship to everyone involved. With environmentally friendly products being given to skippers to use on board – from bilge socks to phosphate free detergent; promoting reusable water bottles at the water filling stations in Shepards Wharf and Cowes Yacht Haven; sharing top tips such as responsible blackwater disposal to keep bathing waters clean to ensuring a ‘nothing overboard’ policy – it is great to see sailing events of this profile, calibre and tradition taking the lead and doing their bit for the environment. THE Masterclass

MASTERING THE FERRY GLIDE It is one of the most satisfying manoeuvres a helm can execute yet its power is not always fully realised. Rachel Andrews, RYA Chief Instructor, Motor Cruising and Power, unlocks the secrets of ferry gliding. “FERRY gliding is a true combination of many practical skills and demonstrates a really good understanding of the prevailing conditions.” Put simply, ferry gliding is the action of moving a boat sideways, and can be put to great effect to come alongside pontoons, piers or other boats in a slow, controlled manner. When space in marinas or on pontoons is at a premium, there are huge advantages to being able to manoeuvre your boat into a tight berth you may never have considered possible, just through applying your knowledge in a different way.

HOW DO YOU FERRY GLIDE? Ferry gliding uses steering, the power of the engine, tide and the wind in combination to make the boat slide sideways. It involves angling the craft so that the wind/stream creates a sideways force on the vessel.

For this explanation of the principles of ferry gliding, assume the boat is pointing forwards into the tide with the current pushing down the river and no wind. If you put the boat into neutral it will go backwards. 1 Directly to your starboard is a pontoon, about 50m away - put your boat directly parallel to that pontoon. 2 At the moment you are pointing straight up the river or estuary, and carefully balancing the amount of throttle to tide, turn the wheel very slightly to starboard so that the tide is pushing on the bow. 3 As soon as the tide is pushing on the bow, adjust the wheel slightly back to port to prevent the boat going beam onto the tide and being pushed to the bank. 4 The combination of the tide pushing starboard and steering wheel turned to port produces the net result of the boat ‘crabbing’ precisely sideways.

Ferry gliding can be done in reverse too, running with the tide, with stern to stream. Experienced powerboaters can instinctively visualise what is happening with the prop under the water, so once you have acquired the skills and understanding to ferry glide bow to tide, you can reverse all the principles for the opposite effect. The key to a good ferry glide is the slower you can go, the more control you will have. You can allow the boat to go a bit faster by letting the bow come across further – the bigger the angle across the tide, the more influence the tide will have on the boat and the more power will be required to counteract the force of the tide. The danger of trying to go too fast, however, is the nearer you get to the pontoon the effect of tide may become slower, so there is less effect on the bow. This could result in the boat being propelled forward faster than you would want and a possible bump.

When a very good practitioner executes a ferry glide there will be no obvious change in direction, no jerky movements or deviations, just a gentle glide sideways.

READY TO FERRY GLIDE?

The skills and knowledge required for ferry gliding may be taught as early as RYA Powerboat Level 2 as a means of coming alongside, in a tidal stream or current. As Rachel concludes: “Once you have this knowledge then it just becomes about applying your understanding of tide, wind and trim of the boat to balance the boat and maintain position. “I don’t think people always realise the power of ferry gliding, but I hope more skippers start to appreciate it is not just an advanced technique used by large commercial operators but something that can be employed on a day-to-day basis and really adds another string to your powerboating bow.” www.rya.org.uk/training

FOCUS

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

ladies who launch BY EMMA SLATER

There are increasing numbers of women only courses available

There is no doubt that sailing and motor boating are amongst the most gender inclusive sports around. But how do we help even more females seize the opportunities that are increasingly available and increase the representation of women in the sport?

JANUARY’S Arkenford National Watersports Participation Survey showed female participation in ‘any boating activity’ has increased steadily since 2010 and is now at its joint highest level (6.2 per cent, 2007) since the study began in 2002. However, there are still more males involved in nearly all sailing and motor boating activities, the only exceptions being motor boating/cruising and canal boating where more females participate. The most recent RYA Club Membership Survey backed up these trends in sailing, finding average sailing club membership in England in 2014 was 58 per cent male and 42 per cent female, but with the number of women increasing by 11 per cent from 2013. HURDLING THE BARRIERS “Not all women need a helping hand to find their way in the sport but creating environments where women feel safe and reassured, and that deliver the sport in a way that ensures their goals, whatever they may be, are met, can make a real difference,” said Susie Moore. Susie is the RYA’s Regional Development Officer for the South and Thames Valley and works with clubs and RYA Training Centres in those regions to get more people boating. A lifelong water baby, who grew up sailing with her family on the Isle of Wight, Susie believes a renewed focus on getting more women active, driven by initiatives like Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, is being reflected in sailing. Importantly the research these kind of campaigns provide gives staff and volunteers of clubs and centres better information to help them put on the right kind of activities or deliver them in more innovative ways in order to get and keep more women involved. According to Sport England, there are currently two million fewer women than men regularly playing sport in England, yet 75 per cent of 14 - 40 year old women say they want to exercise more. Susie continued: “Women-only sessions and groups have been around for a number of years but because of the extra focus on female participation, more clubs and centres are offering or thinking about this style of session. The research in these areas is also helping them be more targeted about what sessions they could put on, for which groups, when, and how

Felpham SC in Sussex is one club already seeing success from their new women-only group

Rutland SC are celebrating five years of their Ladies Who Launch group

to reach out to these people. “If they have space between 10.30am and midday on Mondays, for example, could they target retirees, mums who have dropped the kids off at school or part-time professional females? “Many women put barriers up for themselves; they fear being judged and do not see themselves as strong enough, or fit enough, worry about making a ‘fool’ of themselves or are self-conscious about appearance and so on. These women need more reassurance and confidence building, to move them from not participating to trying the sport and then towards becoming lifelong participants. More clubs are providing this through women-only groups with the social side being key.” LADIES WHO LAUNCH This is certainly what Rutland SC have found as they celebrate five years of their Ladies Who Launch group. This twiceweekly group now attracts around 40

regulars, with a mailing list of 125 women wanting to know what is going on. Fiona MacDonald, group spokeswoman, explains: “The social side is a huge part of LWL’s success, including after-session buffets, walks, organised pub lunches and even weekends yachting in the Solent. “After each session one of the sailors writes a blog, which is sent by email to our mailing list and posted on our Facebook page. This keeps everyone upto-date so they feel they can just drop into a session when they can, regardless of experience. All the ladies learn in a very encouraging, non-competitive, nonjudgmental environment which, while becoming very competent sailors, boosts their confidence and self-esteem.” Meanwhile, Earlswood Lakes SC near Birmingham and Felpham SC in Sussex are amongst clubs already seeing success from their new women-only groups this year. More than 20 females have been taking advantage of Felpham’s Women on Water (WOW) sessions since they started in June. Session leader Catherine Hemsley, says: “We want to show women who watch their children and partners sail that they can do it themselves, and women who have never had a go at the sport how easy and affordable it is to actually become a sailor. The early success of WOW is down to the fact sessions are very relaxed, social, run by females and includes a shared meal prepared by one of the club members after sailing.” LIFETIME JOURNEY Opportunities for more women to get into boating are increasing, but so are the opportunities to do more in the sport once they have been bitten by the bug.

Susie Moore has made boating her career

Opportunities for more women to get into boating are increasing, but so are the opportunities to do more in the sport once they have been bitten by the bug.

Susie Moore is just one example of a woman who has made the sport she loves her career, there are countless others in high-profile and very diverse roles. Amanda Van Santen and Rachel Andrews - the RYA’s Chief Instructor, Dinghy and Windsurfing and Chief Instructor, Motor Cruising and Power respectively - both hold senior positions with boating’s national governing body, the Royal Yachting Association, while women like the Team SCA’s yachtswomen who competed in, and won a leg of, the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race and powerboat racing champion, Shelley Jory-Leigh, keep pushing the boundaries, as do the women sailors, coaches and support staff of the British Sailing Team. Windsurfing coach and trainer Ali Yates, is another whose name has become synonymous with her sport. Having spent money saved for Bros concert tickets on an old windsurfer from a car boot sale, and teaching herself to windsurf using a book borrowed from her school library, Ali thinks the horizons are stretching all the time. “I do think females come at things with a different perspective, and often have more natural empathy, which, from my experience, many people find refreshing. I ended up in this career almost by accident, but that happens less now. People definitely see career pathways in watersports, girls just as much as boys.

ALL AT SEA OCTOBER 2015

Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

The Canteen is a popular spot

Historic Plymouth is always a favourite amongst boaters and offers a terrific choice of places to have a meal or just stop off for a snack and a drink.

BEST TWEETERS:

PLYMOUTH sits on the border between Devon and Cornwall and has played a key role in Britain’s Naval history; Devonport is the largest operational naval base in Western Europe. It is home to the Royal Navy’s amphibious ships HMS Ocean, Albion and Bulwark, 11 frigates and seven nuclear subs, and HQ to Brittany Ferries, the Royal Marines and Princess Yachts. The area around Millbay is undergoing long term development with additional berthing options now at the Royal William Yard, out towards Devil’s Point and the newer King Point Marina, second marina of Sutton Harbour, within the inner basin of Millbay itself. From a foodie point of view things are definitely looking up with Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall choosing the perfectly converted Royal Navy victualling yard at Stonehouse (Royal William Yard) for one of his rare Canteens and we always keep a watch on the Stable’s latest openings, which have been at Plymouth and Winchester this summer. It is a mixed city, as all the interesting ones are, with a decent Uni (7th largest in UK) that still offers a surf locker to interested students and is home to Plymouth Gin, one of my favourites.

A JOLLY BREAKFAST

We get in early so tie up at Mayflower Marina, tucked in on your left as you enter the Tamar and looking over towards Cremyll Village in Cornwall and the afore mentioned Royal William Yard. We know we will get a good breakfast at Jolly Jacks and I am intrigued to find out more about this friendly marina which has won TYHA’s UK Coastal Marina Award two years in a row. It is actually owned by its 400 or so berth holders, which seems to work very well. Fortified by the full English and double poached eggs, with proper crisp bacon, we look at the hike and bike options from here and they are good. Bike: Our old friend National Cycle Route 2 is sign posted outside the Mayflower’s entrance, and a choice of ferries take you over to Cornwall, via the Cremyll Ferry, or from RWY to the

Barbican where you can either walk back along the Hoe, looking out for Spanish Armadas to your left... Hike: …or take the short ferry hop from the Barbican to Mount Batten Peninsular where you have some splendid coastal walks and we can recommend the Clovelly Bay Inn as a good cosy stop off for sustenance. Yacht Havens’ Marina is over here and offers a sheltered berth from south westerlies. We scoot over the narrow passage dividing the Mayflower from the Royal William, noting Princess Yachts’ impressive set up with a steady flow of boats chugging in and out. The other interesting hanger is just downstream from the Mayflower, and looms blackly on the otherwise bright green river bank. This fascinating listed building is home to Will Sterling, one of the UK’s finest traditional boat builders - note to self to visit next time I am down, the build quality is meant to be exceptional.

WATERFRONT LIVING

The delightful deli at Canteen is great for topping up your picnic basket

Our Bakery group are making great bread in an atmospheric setting The view from the Canteen

The conversion from victualling yard to atmospheric waterfront living has been done very well. Designed by architect Sir John Rennie in 1825, this is the largest collection of Grade 1 listed military buildings in Europe and are now a mix of spacious apartments, restaurants, shops and galleries. Many of the flats have superb views over the water and the developers have left as much integrity in the old buildings as to make them darned interesting, and hold their price. But we do not want to talk property when we can be talking dough. Yes, the RW bakery genuinely uses the old space that would have turned out the ship’s biscuits for the Navy back in the day, but now the impressive Our Bakery group are here, doing what they do so well over in Lyme Regis and Poundbury, making great bread in an atmospheric setting and sharing it out. Big wooden tables, piles of croissants and pain au chocolate straight from the ovens, bakers throwing dough about – near heaven for me, as the coffee is supplied by Clifton too – they are on it! Everything is good here.

@MarinaPlymouth @KingPointPlym @visitplymouth @rivercottage THE CANTEEN

The sun is fully out now as we push open the huge heavy door of the bakery and waddle past the RW Water Ferry that runs daily to the Barbican (£3 single) and head to the very end of the quay. Here the Canteen has tables and chairs spilling out on the cobbles, enjoying a most fabulous view, which we enjoy with a cool local beer in hand and a platter of meat and cheese on the table. Hugh FW knows his punter and provides an excellent grazing table throughout the day and an exciting deli bar that is great for topping up your picnic basket if you have only half filled it from the bakery. The Dock at King Point also comes highly recommended and is another top spot for breakfast, with the modern glazed building having a cracking view over the marina. If you want to wander a little further I would give Rock Salt Café a try, just up the road at 31 Stonehouse Street. It offers good attention to detail and fresh local produce.

MARINA CHAT

WHAT’S HAPPENING ArouNd THE MArINAS

A SEA OdySSEy

Jeff’s Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 is called Sea Essay

Dr. Jeff Llewellyn shares the highlights of his boating year around the Solent and beyond.

I am part of The Channel Sailing Division of the Civil Service Sailing association, based at mDL’s mercury Yacht Harbour marina on the River Hamble. This year we have a beautiful new boat, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 called Sea Essay, which has accommodation for eight crew. We were all very excited to take her out on the water for the first time. The highlight of the CSSa calendar is a 14-week cruise from mercury Yacht Harbour to La Rochelle and back, which runs from may until September this year. members can join the boat and sail legs of the journey. We generally have a crew of about five or six people per week. The cruise follows the French coastline,

stopping off at lots of cities including Cherbourg, Saint-malo and Roscoff. I joined the cruise in La Trinité at the beginning of July and took the boat down to Pornichet, near the Loire estuary, which was wonderful. It is always a really relaxed event giving members the opportunity to enjoy one another’s company and to get out on the water together. Each year we make use of mDL’s Passeport Escales scheme, which allows Freedom Berthing members to enjoy complimentary stays at up to 90 mDL-approved marinas in the UK, France, Spain and Italy. This makes finding marinas en-route hassle-free and it is also easy to make reservations at any of the marinas in the network via mDL’s online booking system. SAILING THE SOLENT mercury Yacht Harbour is ideally located for our members thanks to the easy access it offers to the Solent. at the CSSa we enjoy a really busy summer season that continues all the way to the middle of November, with someone sailing virtually every day.

Our position on the Hamble means we can enjoy leisurely day sails to Cowes, Yarmouth, Portsmouth and Gosport, or longer cruises along the south coast down to Falmouth, when we travel around 25-30 miles per day. We run a number of training courses with the RYa that run through the autumn, from Competent Crew courses to RYa Yachtmaster training.

There is a real buzz around mercury Yacht Harbour and everyone is always friendly. There are excellent shoreside facilities at mercury Yacht Harbour, including a wellstocked chandlery and The Waters Edge Bar and Restaurant, which is perfect for meeting friends after a day on the water. We make extensive use of services like the free WiFi, and marina staff are always on hand to help .

We can rest assured that our boat is safe and secure with mDL, which is very important to any boat owner. mDL also offers the opportunity to swap berths with other berth holders in other mDL marinas, as well as benefitting from fuel at cost – which is fantastic – and generously discounted boatyard services. www.mdlmarinas.co.uk

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS

Brighton Marina is often described as vibrant. In truth, it is a marina of two halves. The west of the marina closer to the restaurants and bars retains the vibrant cosmopolitan buzz. The east concourse however is quieter and is home to the small fishing fleet giving a picture postcard background.

Brighton Marina, West Jetty, Brighton, East Sussex BN2 5UP. Vessels approaching Brighton Marina should call the marina ahead on 01273 819919 or VHF channel 80.

BRIGHTON MARINA

PREMIER Brighton Marina is set against a backdrop of white cliffs at Black Rock on the East Sussex coastline, just half a mile east of the historic city of Brighton. One of the largest artificial yacht marinas in the world, two giant man-made breakwaters wrap the marina to provide secure shelter for 1,200 berths and a small fishing fleet. Brighton Marina was opened to the public in July 1978, and formally opened by the Queen in May 1979. The marina has seen numerous phases of development since 1979 including the cinema, residential properties and recently the West Quay residential development. Over this past year, Premier has invested over £1.5 million in Brighton Marina including the purchase of a dedicated dedicated dredger, which will be owned

and operated by Premier and commissioned by the end of the year. Brighton Marina continues to advance its programme of pontoon renewal and refurbishment with a £250,000 investment that has seen the installation of new finger pontoons. Premier has also upgraded shore power supplies to smart metering and will shortly upgrade the fuel pontoon to self-service. Moreover, this summer saw the relocation and regeneration of Brighton Marina Yacht Club. One of the UK’s largest floating buildings at 3,500 sq ft., the new premises, located between pontoons six and seven off the western concourse, will open this month and will offer a range of quality food and drink and an attractive ‘social membership’ for those who wish to take the opportunity to mix with likeminded enthusiasts.

FACILITIES

FAMILY friendly and ideal for boaters of all abilities, Brighton Marina combines the benefits of a fully equipped boatyard, first class facilities and marine services with a vibrant array of authentic restaurants, bars and cafes, making it a worthy recipient of the Yacht Harbour Association’s Five Gold Anchors Award. Brighton’s award winning facilities include 24 different eateries to choose from and the new Brighton Yacht Club which offers membership to Premier berth holders and welcomes visiting yachtsmen. It provides a clean and modern dining experience for those that visit, along with a thriving racing programme and plenty of year-round social events. Covering an area of about 127 acres, and bursting with things to do, the marina also boasts a number of attractions including an eight screen multiplex cinema, a supermarket and a pub, as well as a number

of RYA approved sea schools, Lagoon Watersports and Waterfront Sailing and not to mention a committed and thriving berth holders’ association. Besides a first-class boatyard, Premier’s Brighton Marina offers a host of onsite marine tenants that offer everything from engineering and fabrication, to rigging, electronics, shipwright services and GRP repairs. For new and used boat sales there are three brokerages onsite: Ancasta International Boat Sales, Brighton Boat Sales and Blackrock Yachting. Brighton Marina has its own onsite chandlery, Nickys Chandlery, located on East Lockside. The chandlery serves motor and sailing boat owners alike. It offers everything from rope, charts, paints, pumps to lifejackets, general fittings and more. They also run an established sail clinic as well as free sail inspections and dry storage for customers’ sails in the winter.

CRUISING

DAY sails along the Seven Sisters and anchoring off the very picturesque Birling Gap makes for a pleasant day trip or cruising around Dover; looking out over the English Channel at the fishing vessels and huge ferries as they sail by. Brighton is an excellent base for cross channel cruises or local day trips to Premier’s Eastbourne Marina and Chichester Marina, where berth holders

BERTHING & STORAGE

A safe and secure location for yachts and motorboats alike, Brighton Marina is the perfect gateway to the English Channel and trips to Europe. Brighton Marina offers in-water berthing for over 1,200 boats up to 26m with a draft of 2m and prestige berthing for boats over 14 metres. This includes bigger purpose-built berths, quality dock fenders and ‘mooring mates’ for easier and safer berthing. The marina also offers Versa dock berthing for jet skis up to 3.5 metres LOA, with a capacity of 20. Brighton’s experienced boatyard team provides year-round lift, highpressure wash and block-off and re-launch services that include the use of a 60 tonne boat hoist and a 15 tonne Roodberg boat mover. This year the boatyard has seen considerable investment including the introduction of a new boatyard building, a new mast rack and additional water points throughout the yard, along with aesthetic improvements.

ACCESS

Travel to Brighton is easy. London to Brighton is approximately 50 miles, with a journey time of about 90 minutes. The direct route takes you along the A23/M23 South until you reach Brighton. When approaching the marina from the A27 take the B2123. Turn right at the first set of traffic lights, signposted Brighton Town Centre, Racecourse and Marina Village. Turn left at second set of traffic lights, past the Racecourse and follow the signs

for the Marina Village. There is long term parking available in various locations. Short term parking is available in the multi storey car park at the west of the marina. Brighton is within easy reach of both Heathrow and Gatwick International airports. Shoreham airport is available for light aircraft. Vessels approaching Brighton Marina should call the marina ahead on 01273 819919 or VHF channel 80. The entrance to Brighton Marina lies between the marina’s east and west breakwater arms and is dredged annually to – 2.0m C.D. However, storms tend to drive sand in to form a bank to the south and east of the end of the eastern breakwater and shoaling may occur in the entrance channel, particularly on the east side, between annual dredges.

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS “As a berth holder, Premier Brighton Marina offers a stunning location, with easy access to the sea, and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Also, good marine facilities, including a boat park with car park, local restaurants and shops – which all make for a happy sailor!” Clare Parnacott – Hiatus, 9.8m “My wife and I always enjoy our visits to Brighton Marina. The staff are always friendly, helpful and professional, with facilities that rank amongst the best in the channel. On a recent visit, when the chips were really down, we arrived pumping out water, the team reacted immediately. Our boat was pumped out and towed onto the hoist until we could find and fix the problem. A very big thank you to all concerned.” David and Elaine Hector Free Spirit, 11.1m “I came to Brighton a few years ago, together with my ketch-rigged motor-

sailer. The plan was to have a berth I felt would be comfortable. That is to say the facilities were close by, my fellow ‘boat owners’ welcomed me and the office staff always helpful. It has worked out well with the ability to ‘go into town’ – the buses run to and fro regularly. Fellow boat owners – whether weekends or weekdays – give a friendly greeting to each other as it means we all enjoy the ‘life afloat’. The office staff are always willing to help should you need it.” Roger Taylor, Cariad Cymru, 10.7m “Every Friday I can’t wait to leave everything behind me in London and come dawn to Brighton for the weekend. The marina is a magical place where I meet my friends and have fun. Basically it is a holiday every weekend. I feel the staff at Brighton Marina are a big family, very qualified, very professional and very passionate and they do not hesitate to help and they are full of positive energy. It does make all the difference, welcoming you to your second home” Alex, Serenade of Southampton, 11.1m

Natural England on reinstating Portland Sea Lavender that only grows at Portland, and is a shorter, broad leaved version of the more common form. Dave has spent many years gathering seed at the end of the flowering season, propagating and then planting out the new plants, so that this rare plant now thrives on the rocky bank that borders the public walkway and cycle path along the waterfront, providing a gentle lavender haze across the rocks whilst aiding soil erosion – top job

Access all areas

MILFORD Marina is now the most accessible tidal marina in the UK thanks to the installation of a pair of state of the art lock gates. The gates’ completion ensures much faster and more frequent lock times. The Dock Lock project was part of Visit Wales’ Coastal Tourism project, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, to encourage tourism along the Welsh coastline. This heralds a major redevelopment of the whole area being overseen by the Port of Milford Haven that will see new shops, restaurants, retail, leisure and homes being built there. THEN AND NOW

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.

BOATING ARCHIVE

Beautiful finishes at Bosham Events like the Bosham Classic Boat Revival Weekend are a fantastic chance for boats and classes that have all but disappeared from the sailing scene to come together and be enjoyed by boaters and spectators alike.

The boats may be elderly but the racing was close and competitive

Launched in 1962, Fireball 6 is close to original and is a great example of sympathetic restoration.

Beautiful varnish on a 12m Sharpie at Bosham Quay

Just a few months back, this Archive page in All At Sea featured how developments in the world of varnishing and top coats was helping fuel the Concours finishes being seen on the growing number of classic boats. the big boat classic scene is well served with established events such as the Panerai Classic and Cowes Classic Weeks. the dinghies, though, were slower off the mark, but have been catching up fast as was clearly seen in the fifth running of the Bosham Classic Boat Revival Weekend. some sailing events are clearly enhanced by their location (think of Cowes and ‘the week’) and in this case, Bosham (West sussex) and their Classic Revival are clearly made for each other. the location of the Quay is rich in history and the Bosham Clubhouse is a haven of classic homeliness, which is matched by the welcoming air that is given to the 60 or so boats that regularly turn up to compete in the Revival weekend.

CARING FOR CLASSICS

there is one other pre-requisite for classic events, for many of the boats being sailed are now very elderly ladies indeed. Many even have wooden masts, so few owners would really wish to subject their boats to the rigours of a windy race in rough seas. In this respect the picturesque waters of Chichester Harbour are sheltered enough to allow most boats to sail, whilst the weather did the rest with a wonderful weekend of sunshine and warm breezes. With so many boats bearing the hallmark of a beautiful classic, with that deep glossy lustrous varnish finish, the sunshine glittering on the hulls out on the blue water made for a truly superb sight. However, far from just being museum quality boats out for a weekend jolly, the racing was just as

fierce as would be found in any mainstream sailing event. With so many boats wanting to compete at Bosham, the club wisely set up three fleets of slow, medium and fast handicap, spread across two courses. this resulted in an easing of congestion at the mark roundings but with many of the boats being iconic one offs, there were still a few heart stopping moments. the stress levels must have been even higher on Jim Gibbon’s National 18 Moonraker, which had just been launched the weekend of the event following a keelband to mast head top quality restoration. Despite Moonraker looking like a brand new boat, she was soon in the thick of the action. With lightish airs and flat water, plenty of sail area and waterline length were at a premium so it was no surprise that the classic National 18s (Bosham has the largest active fleet of these boats in the uK) would be making all the front running. these stately boats were far from having it all their own way, though, as one of the many Merlin Rockets that were competing was also showing that ‘class’ – in the design, restoration and fit out of the boat will always come to the fore.

YOUNG & OLD

What is more, the 1950’s Merlin Rocket Flinkidink was also busy showing that the classic scene is far from being just for the older sailor as the boat was crewed by Milly Wilder, the 9-year-old daughter of helm Rob. Milly was far from alone in showing that younger sailors can enjoy the classics, as another of the front running boats was being crewed by Freya Lillywhite, who was just a little older than Milly. the most notable performance by a younger sailor had to be that of 14-year-old tilly Mattich

from Aldeburgh, up on the East Coast. the estuary at Aldeburgh is home to a fleet of Aldeburgh Lapwings, a pretty little 12ft 6in clinker dinghy, designed by Morgan Giles. It is every bit the epitome of the varnished ‘classic’ dinghy. Milly had learnt to sail in her mother’s boat, but was keen to have her own Lapwing. short of the funds needed to put a boat afloat, tilly busked with her violin outside the fish and chip shop in the village until she had enough to not only get her boat, but to ensure that it looked as good as all the others. With her boat restored, tilly showed that she had all the skills as she was then able to sail it into third place overall. Events like the Bosham Classic Revival weekend are also a great opportunity for boats and classes that have all but disappeared from the sailing scene. It is hard to think of any other event where rarities such as the Christchurch Coot and torbay Minnow get their chance to compete. these boats would rub shoulders with other boats from yesteryear such as the long and lean 12M sharpies, a boat that like the Fairey Firefly would enjoy a season in the sun as an Olympic class.

FIREFLY WINNER

It is part of the appeal of Bosham that the Concours is almost as important as the racing, and was every bit as competitive. In the end it all came down to two boats; the beautifully restored National 12 and an equally superbly presented Fairey Firefly. In the end it would be the Firefly, owned and sailed by Mandy Henderson that would take the coveted award. this was the fifth running of the Bosham Revival event and was yet again another great success. We look forward to the 2016 event, which will see All at Sea in attendance, enjoying the beautiful finishes at Bosham.

IN THE DRINK

ALL AT SEA CREW

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.

Still they come… American-style ales brewed in Britain, as seen in AAS July, an innovation led by small ‘craft ale’ operations but now big enough to interest some larger breweries.

GREENE King of Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, which brews beers such as IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Abbott Ale, is now producing East Coast IPA - East Coast America, that is, not our East Anglian coast. The essential ingredient is American hops that deliver a citrus aroma and tangy, refreshing beer, 4 per cent abv. I found it in an eight bottle multipack in Tesco for £15 with singles on the shelf at £1.99 per 500ml bottle.

COLCHESTER BREWERY

Firmly based near the English east coast at the pretty village of Wakes Colne in Essex, Colchester Brewery is brewing English ‘real’ ales. It was set up four years ago in a small business park beautifully landscaped into the surrounding green fields. This is Constable country, with a stunning railway viaduct striding across the skyline and the East Anglian Railway Museum at nearby Chappel station. Co-founder Roger Clark presides over the brewery as if it were a model train set, every brewing process in miniature, with one key extra they call the ‘double drop’ method. Roger claims there is only one other brewery in the UK doing this. The ale is brewed in a normal but miniature mash tun, cleaned after each brew by a man climbing in through a door little bigger than a porthole. The mash is then transferred to the first fermentation copper for 16 hours during which the majority of the impurities filter out. It is then literally ‘dropped’ down into a 10-barrel second fermentation vessel for six to seven days, with a white moulded cover to control the natural fermentation froth. The result is cask ales Colchester No 1, 4.1 per cent, classic copper-coloured English ale and AK Pale ale 3.7 per cent session ale. Bottled specialities include Metropolis golden, 3.9 per cent and hoppy and spicy, a red bitter called Red Diesel 4.2 per cent - “not just for farmers”

Bottega Gold Prosecco in individual 20cl gold-coated bottles offered with a bendy straw was offered by Swallow Yachts at their pontoon berth press conference. A good tip for a yacht launching party as there are no labels to wash off in the ice tub and you have no glasses to deal with. Refreshingly dry at 11 per cent, it is available from various suppliers including www. drinksdirect.co.uk where the multi-buy price (24 bottles) works out at £3.79 a throw. PSP Logistics went for Galanti Prosecco when announcing its expansion in Poole Harbour. Made from Glera grapes and 11 per cent, it is vibrant and authentic. It is listed at www.easywineshop.co.uk at a reasonable £8.48 per 75cl bottle. Sunsail chose Chilgrove gin for Mediterranean-inspired gin and tonic cocktails featuring Fever Tree tonic and stripped orange peel, which worked very well. And Goslings, featured in last month’s All At Sea, offered its own Bermuda Black Seal rum and Goslings ginger beer for sampling and purchase.
