FINAL SHOWDOWN FOR SPRING SERIES 16 SHORE STYLE
FROM PAGE 1: The closing races in the Brooks Macdonald Warsash Spring Series and Spring Championship took place over 26-27 April. Saturday proved to be an exhausting but exhilarating day, especially for the sportsboats in White Group, which experienced gusts to 33 knots and lulls at 18 knots, leading to a number of broaches. The spinnaker on Gary Baker’s SB20 Trio ended up under the boat and Turbulence Too lived up to her name with a demonstration of horizontal sailing. Boats.com (Ian Atkins – J/70) shredded her spinnaker during Race 2 but fortunately had a spare and still managed to win their race.

By Sunday morning the breeze had dropped to 16-20 knots; the rain later cleared and crews finished the day wearing sunglasses. Black Group got underway with a six mile course for IRC1 and IRC2 classes. In IRC3 having taken the first race Induljence (Nick and Adam Munday) was disappointed with a poor start which dropped them to sixth and lost them the Series. Tokoloshe II (Michael Bartholomew) cleaned up in IRC1 with two wins, as did Tarka (IRC2). Illegal Immigrant and Whooper each chalked up another top place in IRC4. Several leading J/109s had difficulty getting spinnakers down at one mark and had to sail on,
letting the last two through to head the pack. At the line Just So (David McGough) and Jagerbomb (Paul Griffiths) took the flag. The White Group committee boat had a busy time when one boat dragged a laid mark. A replacement mark was deployed but that too was caught and removed by another boat; the two giving the impression of an unexpected ‘gate’ on the course! In the confusion, the race was abandoned and restarted. CRO White Group Peter Knight commented that this was the first time in his memory of the event that the Black Flag has stayed firmly below decks for the whole Series; he attributed this to sailors increasingly investing in new electronics to mark the start line. Over the eight race days, the 100plus team from Warsash Sailing Club ran over 170 separate races and each week title sponsors Brooks Macdonald welcomed competitors back to the club with champagne prizes for the lucky class winners. HOBIE HONOURED HUNDREDS of paddle boarders and surfers took part in a floating tribute to the late Hobart ‘Hobie’ Alter, who was credited with popularising surfing and catamaran sailing with his innovative and much-loved designs. The traditional Hawaiian tribute was staged off the Doheny State Beach, California, in accordance with Alter’s wishes, expressed before he lost his battle with cancer at his family home, aged 80. Alter will be remembered by many throughout the sailing and surfing world for his development of the foam surfboard, and later his Hobie catamaran designs, which can be found on beaches and in boat yards around the globe, having played a huge part in bringing cat sailing to the masses. Always an innovator, Alter began his design business from the garage of his family’s Californian summer home in the 1950s, later developing his business with friend Gordon ‘Grubby’ Clark in response to the phenomenal demand for his designs.

APRIL 28 marked the beginning of National Watersports Month, and was marked by Olympic silver medallist Stuart Bithell and Team GBR sailor Sophie Weguelin taking to the water to try out a new sport, swapping sails for paddles. Over 400 free taster events and open days are due to take place nationwide throughout May, spearheaded by the country’s leading watersports and boating organisations, British Marine Federation, British Rowing, British Water Ski and Wakeboard, Go Canoeing and Royal Yachting Association. Following the warmest summer recorded for six years, a consortium of marine organisations has seen a significant rise in the number of Brits trying out activities such power boating, sailing, canal boating and rowing, with an increase of 23 per cent (700,000 adults) in 2013 compared to 2012. It’s expected that the summer of 2014 will see a record number of people participating in water activities. Olympic sailing silver medallist, Stuart Bithell said: “The month long campaign will be giving people across
the country the chance to try something new, or simply breathe life back into an old hobby. Howard Pridding, CEO of the British Marine Federation, commented: “Finding ways of keeping the children entertained during the long summer holidays can be tricky; by introducing families to new water activities now we hope it will encourage more people to take to the British waterways and seas during the school break. See All at Sea’s special feature on page 26 for more details and ways to get involved with National Watersports Month.

Never too old for new tricks
ALL at Sea has long had its roots in sailing, but that’s not to say we don’t like to try something new – especially when water is involved! This month AAS is celebrating National Watersports Month, a fantastic new initiative that’s aiming to get people out on the water in all sorts of ways, throughout the month of May, thanks to hundreds of free events taking place all across the country. May, of course, is perfectly timed to whet the nation’s appetite for some waterborne action in advance of the summer season, as light nights and hotter temperatures see clubs and centres, beaches and slipways come to life. With the British Marine Federation already reporting a rise in watersports participation numbers - from 2.8 million adults having a go in 2012 to 3.5 million in 2013 – a further boost across the board is a welcome one. Having more people enjoying time on the water brings many benefits increased income for the industry, a buoyant secondhand market, and greater competition for the racers amongst us – to name but a few. The only conceivable downside is the possibility of a queue at the bar afterwards – but that’s something we’re willing to overlook.
Warmer summers and the Olympic legacy have no doubt contributed to the uplift in numbers. But having an initiative that unites the efforts of several governing bodies and makes having a go easy and accessible, and that in doing so breaks down preconceptions of our sport, is very welcome. As our special feature on page 26 reveals, if you’re a newcomer to watersports, this is a great opportunity to try your hand at one - or several – sports. For those of you who are already hooked on some form of boating, this is an absolutely brilliant excuse to find a fresh way of getting afloat and experiment with new skills; perhaps paddle-boarding, windsurfing, powerboating or even wakeboarding takes your fancy. It’s also a brilliant way to bring family and friends together, and there’s no charge for taking part. Chances are, you already love being on the water, so what’s holding you back? AAS will of course be taking full advantage of the opportunities available, and we look forward to bringing you reports on the successes of National Watersports Month in next issue. See you on the water!
Squadron’s 200th anniversary THE Royal Yacht Squadron has confirmed that Rolex will be supporting the Club’s Bicentenary Regatta, the spectacular international sailing event that will celebrate 200 years of the historic club’s existence in July 2015. The multi-format regatta which takes place from 25-31 July 2015 in the Solent will attract yachts both large and small, classic and modern, from J-Class to J80 by offering a choice of racing fleets for competitors to take part in. The announcement of Rolex’s participation coincides with the release of the confirmed Notice of Race and entry forms. Entries
are already coming in from amongst the 25 clubs invited from 19 countries around the world, specially selected by the Royal Yacht Squadron in recognition of friendships that have evolved through mutual and reciprocal sailing activities over many years. Invitations have also been extended to the Cowes Combined Clubs. The whole event will consist of four days of inshore racing from either the Squadron line or a committee vessel with also a clockwise Race Around the Island. Competing club teams can charter a pair of J80s from a local fleet of twelve for the

Bicentenary Team Racing event or charter one of a fleet of 25 Beneteau First 40s. The bulk of the inshore racing fleet, however, will be IRC class, ranging from 40ft to supermaxi racers whose numbers will be limited to 200 yachts, either owned by members of the selected clubs or chartered. The Race Around the Island is set to be the most breathtaking spectacle of the UK 2015 sailing calendar when the inshore fleets will be joined by an additional number of larger maxi yachts, sailing superyachts, and multihulls, many of which will have just arrived in the
UK after taking part in the Transatlantic Race from Newport, Rhode Island a few weeks previously. Rear Commodore Yachting David Aisher commented: “The Bicentenary Regatta next year will be a fitting tribute to the Royal Yacht Squadron’s close involvement in yachting since its inception. He added: “It will be a celebration of yachting at its best.” A packed schedule of social events includes an aerial display by the Red Arrows and a parachute display by the Red Devils. A Regatta Ball is to be held at Osborne House.

THUMBS UP FOR FISH & SHIPS PORTLAND Marina held its first ‘Fish & Ships’ food and boat show recently, bringing together all the new marine related businesses at Osprey Quay with the best of Dorset’s food and drink producers, celebrating all things in, on and below the sea. With live music on the Friday and Saturday evenings and good weather the marina saw around a thousand visitors on Saturday and slightly fewer on the Sunday. On the ‘Ships’ side of things the largest exhibitor was Sunseeker (who build their hulls at Osprey Quay before floating them to Poole to be fitted out) showing visitors their Portofino range and assisting in a local schools boat building programme. Taster sessions and advice for newcomers came from local businesses, and key exhibits included the Portland Gig Rowing Association, National Coast Watch, British Boatbuilding Academy, and Henri Lloyd. The RNLI Roadshow was on hand with its lifejacket clinic, servicing over 140 lifejackets and highlighting nearly
40 that would not have been operative in an emergency situation. The food and cider stalls ran along the waterfront, with Portland Marina providing, probably, the best washroom facilities enjoyed at an outdoor festival! A huge range of local fare was enjoyed by visitors, including popular culinary demonstrations from Nigel Bloxham of the Crab House Cafe.

CHICHESTER’S £3.5 MILLION BOATYARD PREMIER Marinas officially opened its £3.5 million redevelopment of the Chichester Marina boatyard at a grand opening on 26 April. To mark the occasion, an official opening ceremony took place, during which a specially-made plaque was unveiled on the boatyard building by Chichester Harbour Conservancy Director Siún Cranny, alongside Premier Marinas’ Directors and members of the local council. Marine businesses based in the boatyard opened their doors to visitors and put on special events in their premises, while local RYA training centre Chichester Sea School ran a free pilotage and passage planning workshop at onsite Chichester Yacht Club.
Marine equipment manufacturers Garmin, Navico, Raymarine and Waeco were also at the event showcasing their complete range of products. A BBQ, bar, plus family attractions, proved popular with visitors, as did the live band. The event also included a raffle in aid of Premier’s chosen charity The Rainbow Centre, with prizes generously donated by businesses based in the boatyard.
CALLING COWES EARLY BIRDS Image Getty Images
Works on iPhone or iPad THE 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week takes place between 2-9 August, and competitors are being urged to take advantage of the Early Bird discounted entry fee, which ends at midnight on 26 May. There are plenty of entry options available. Entries are accepted for individual days of racing, and those opting to race in the regatta for four or more days will pay the same entry fee regardless of the number of extra days raced effectively providing the option to race for half of the eight day regatta for free. Following the popular introduction of a different style of competition on the final Saturday of the regatta last year, racing on 9 August will again cost just £30 and will take place over a relatively short course of around 2-3 hours. A simple race format is planned - along
the lines of Nab Tower and back - with the actual course being chosen on the day to suit the weather conditions. The day is designed to allow everyone to enjoy an introductory taste of racing at the world’s best-known regatta, with plenty of silverware to be played for. There are also many options to charter a wide range of different boats, either for individual days or for the whole week. Many one-design boats are available to charter on a private basis, and enquiries may be made through the Regatta Centre. In addition, Sunsail, Britannia Corporate Events and Solent Events each offers a comprehensive range of charter options. For individuals, the crewsearch forum on the event website is an invaluable tool that matches available crew with those boats searching for extra crew for the Week.

An official countdown to the Tall Ships Regatta was hosted by Royal Greenwich recently, as the the Dutch sailing schooner Tolkien carried guests from Woolwich Pier to Greenwich Pier and back. The Tall Ships Regatta will start from Falmouth in Cornwall on 31 August. Around 40-50 sailing ships will race to a finishing line off the Isle of Wight. From there the ships will sail on to the Thames Estuary, and complete their voyages on 4-5 September at Woolwich in south east London. The ships will moor at four locations between Woolwich and Greenwich town centres, with the smaller ships in Canary Wharf’s West India Dock. Members of the public are invited onboard to experience some of the finest sailing ships in the world. The largest ships are up to 110 metres in length. The Tolkien’s hull measures 36m, only about one-third of the biggest ones. There will be a range of entertainment and celebrations over the weekend of 5-6 September along the Thames down river from Canary Wharf, including a
Crew Parade through Greenwich Town with marching bands, strolling entertainers, pop-up performance areas and firework displays in Greenwich and Woolwich. www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/tallships.

HISTORIC CLUBS SET TO MERGE
ThE Royal Ocean Racing Club and Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Cowes have revealed plans to merge their operations and create one club with clubhouses both in London (RORC) and Cowes (RCYC). The idea developed following a strategic decision by RORC to establish an administrative base outside London, principally to cater for its growing race management team, which it requires to administer the increased number of races run by RORC. At the same time, RCYC, Cowes has been considering its own long-term future. The obvious benefits, besides complementary spheres of activity (RCYC, Cowes runs inshore keelboat and dayboat racing and the RORC offshore), are sound operational efficiencies, prime locations in London and Cowes for the enjoyment of its combined membership and a home in Cowes for the large number of sailors who race with the RORC, plus a real opportunity to create a centre of excellence for yachting in Cowes. Exact details of the merger have yet to be revealed, but the combined club will operate under the name of RORC, although the intention is to retain the Royal Corinthian name for use in connection with Cowes and Solent-based inshore racing activities, to differentiate between the two racing programmes. Members of both clubs have been advised of the proposal and that general meetings will be convened in time for the merger to become effective in the autumn, after the main summer season.
NeW HOMe FOR BARt FOUNDAtION
ThE Weymouth and Portland national Sailing Academy has announced a prestigious new collaboration with the ‘Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation’. The ASSF - founded by the Academy’s Director, Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy OBE and Andrew’s wife Leah to honour his life and legacy - will be opening the ‘Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre’ at the same venue where Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson competed during the Olympic Games. The WPnSA will act as a hub for all of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation’s activities, helping the Foundation fulfill its charitable objectives. The RYA Accredited Centre will open in May 2014 offering a range of sailing courses for club sailors, young people and community organisations. Peter Allam, Chief Executive at the WPnSA, said: “The ASSF has agreed to work closely with the Academy and the Chesil Trust to deliver the ‘Rod Shipley Sail for a Fiver’ scheme which has to date assisted 12,000 local children to experience sailing on the waters of Portland harbour. The scheme has run successfully for 10 years and currently introduces 1,500 children to water sports annually. The Academy is committed long term to inspiring the next generation through sailing. Working in hand with the ASSF, this relationship will make a significant contribution to the ongoing development of the Olympic and Paralympic sailing legacy here at the WPnSA.” Amanda Simpson, Andrew’s sister and a Trustee of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation as well as being an accomplished sailor in her own right commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity for ASSF to engage with grassroots sailing in a place where Andrew spent much of his youth and adult sailing life. We look forward to working with local and national communities to make this venture at the WPnSA a huge success.”

He had none of the modern technological aids sailors regard as standard today and even his radio failed for the majority of the ten month (312 days) 30,000 mile groundbreaking journey. Reflecting on his historic feat, Sir Robin said: “It is hard to believe 45 years have passed since the day I completed that first historic circumnavigation. I’m still incredibly proud of the achievement, which was the start of many, memorable moments that I am proud of throughout my years at sea. “Ocean racing has always been a fundamental part of my life, and as I
prepare for my latest solo challenge at what feels like the ripe age of 75, I am delighted to say that my thirst for the thrills and adventures has not ceased.” Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is one of Britain’s most celebrated mariners and this autumn he will compete again in a solo transatlantic race, the classic Route du Rhum. Following his first circumnavigation, he skippered Condor to line honours in two legs of the 1977/8 Whitbread Race; co-skippered Enza new Zealand with the late Peter Blake to take the Jules Verne Trophy in 1994 for the fastest circumnavigation of the world; and completed the Velux5Oceans solo round the world race in fourthth position in 2006/7, at the age of 68. Robin was knighted in 1995, and has uniquely been the UK’s Yachtsman of the Year three times. He was ISaF sailor of the Year with Peter Blake in 1994 and in 2007 was one of the first six inductees into the ISaF Hall of Fame. In 1996 he created the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race to offer people from all walks of life and ages the
experience of ocean racing together with the opportunity of completing a circumnavigation. Over 4,000 people have since been introduced to sailing through the unique event which is now the longest in the world at 40,000 miles and is currently three quarters of the way through its ninth edition. Sir Robin will welcome the Clipper 2013-14 Race fleet back to London on 12 July. after competing with the Clipper Race fleet in the australian classic Sydney-Hobart last December, Sir Robin recognised his competitive sailing days were far from over. Last month he announced his entry in the Route de Rhum solo transatlantic challenge in his Open 60 yacht Grey Power. “Solo sailing is where I feel most at home,” Sir Robin confessed. “no one else can benefit you or let you down; it is all in my hands. The Route de Rhum is one of the classics.” The tenth anniversary edition of the 3,500 mile Route de Rhum from St Malo in France to the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe starts on 2 november 2014.
GOLden ‘thank YOu’ fOr rnLi cOupLe anna Morgan-Crocket and husband Peter became a golden couple in an unexpected way at the annual meeting of Cowes RnLI Lifeboat Guild. Thanks to the generosity of a local resident, anna’s retirement as chairman for the past three years could be marked with a gift of a limited edition RnLI gold charm bracelet, and Peter’s RnLI work with a distinctive gold pocket watch. The items were donated on a visit to the station by astrid West, of Godshill, with the request they go to people ‘who had done something very special for the station’. Lifeboat operations manager, Mark Southwell, immediately thought of anna and Peter. The presentations to the delighted pair were made by the chairman of the Isle of Wight Lifeboat Board, Lady Sally Pigot. astrid West, who was present at the meeting, said: “My husband and I are sailors and members of the RnLI and the two items were just stuck in a drawer.” anna also received a bouquet of flowers from the guild committee and a dinner voucher for Murray’s restaurant. Mark paid tribute to anna’s hard work, enthusiasm and professionalism during her chairmanship, and to Peter’s support. This included the ‘extraordinary effort’ put into the new station’s £1-million appeal, and anna’s involvement in the visit to the station of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

DETERMINED British sailor, Andrew Taylor, has rejoined his crew in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race despite being rescued from the freezing waters of the north Pacific last month. After spending a life-threatening 90 minutes lost at sea after falling overboard in a storm, Andrew was clean bill of health from medics and race officials in San Francisco. He rejoined the team onboard Derry~Londonderry~Doire, having recovered from shock, hypothermia and a badly bruised leg which, although still sore, has not deterred him from continuing with the race. It was Derry~Londonderry~Doire that led the 12-strong fleet of identical matched 70-foot Clipper yachts across the line at the start of Race
11 for the PSP Logistics Panama 100 Cup. San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge provided the perfect backdrop as the fleet headed towards the Pacific Ocean for the 3350 miles to Panama. This is the 11th race in a series of 16 in the Clipper Race series. The fleet arrived in San Francisco after a gruelling 5,600 miles nonstop leg across the northern Pacific from China. This next leg is a coast-to-coast challenge to New York consisting of three races via Panama and Jamaica. Race 11 for the PSP Logistics Panama 100 Cup is a very tactical stage from California to Panama and will take approximately three weeks to complete.
BOOST FOR RYA PARALYMPIC PATHWAY THE RYA has received a boost to its Paralympic Pathway with a brand new fleet of 16 2.4mR oneperson keelboats, with the aim of delivering future Paralympic medals for Great Britain. Established as two of the first Paralympic training sites through the RYA’s High Performance Club scheme, Rutland Sailing Club and Queen Mary Sailing Club are the first two venues to see delivery of a number of the new boats, which will provide promising disabled sailors of all ages access to the sport of sailing, and bridge the gap between the RYA’s Sailability programme and the British Sailing Team’s performance remit at Paralympic level. This investment in the new 2.4mR fleet follows a successful bid to Sport England for additional resource into the RYA High Performance Club programme, which aims to establish local venues for elite Youth activity as well as a small number of hubs for entry-level Paralympic training. The RYA made an additional application to Sport England for capital funding to underpin the Paralympic development pathway and basic gym equipment to be sited at some of the High Performance Clubs. Sport England granted this additional award, allowing the RYA to purchase 15 2.4mR keelboats for England and one for the Welsh Yachting Association, funded by Sport Wales.
in the 2.4mR class, admits to the arrival of these boats being a real step forward for her chosen sport: “The new fleet of 2.4mRs which the RYA has secured is just fantastic for the sport of sailing, and in particular Paralympic sailing. To be able to promote the sport and to encourage more disabled people to get into and progress with their sailing and racing is just amazing.” John Derbyshire, RYA Racing Manager and Performance Director, added: “The RYA has always aspired to replicate all the structure, good practice and support we have historically been able to offer to able-bodied sailors, and offer similar levels of support and opportunity for our potential Paralympic sailors.”

Earlier this year Billy approached the HISC Youth Committee to ask if he could organise a fundraising event for his sailing hero, Andrew Simpson’s Sailing Foundation. Bart Simpson’s sister, Amanda Simpson and mother will both be visiting HISC during the event to hand out the prizes and publicize the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation which aims to inspire the next generation into sailing.

Old Gaffers shOwdOwn It had been billed as a friendly contest between local tollesbury winklebrigs and the visiting Old Gaffers Association but in the end no fewer than eight east coast smack’s boats from the OGA formed the core of the fleet to venture into the Leavings at tollesbury, Essex, on Easter Saturday for a race round Great Cob Island. 13 boats set out to race in rather breezy conditions. the initial challenge was to get all the racers off the Hard and out of Woodrolfe Creek against a head wind. Various approaches were attempted using sail and oar and sculling sweep but in the end motorised towing proved the best way to get everyone out in time for the 2.30pm start. Four retired but nine completed the course (including seven of the smack boats) in no more than two hours, and once safely ashore celebrations were held first in the tollesbury Sailing Club and later at a prize-giving and supper at the King’s Head pub.

tHE medals were decided across the five Youth racing classes on 18 April as a light, fickle breeze brought the rYA Youth national Championships to a close at the Weymouth and Portland national Sailing Academy. the rS:X boys’ class was the one to watch. Entering the final day of the regatta Daniel Wilson trailed overnight leader robert York by two points, however was unable to overcome the deficit as York clinched a second in the only race of the day to take event victory. “It feels pretty awesome, I have put in a lot of hard work over the week so it’s nice for it to pay off,” expressed the 18-year-old from Skegness. Imogen Sills completed her quest in emulating older brother Sam and twin sister Saskia by winning her first rYA Youth nationals title in the female rS:X windsurfing event. Sills sealed championships honours with a fourth
place finish overall, ending her regatta an impressive 20 points ahead of second placed Emma Wilson. the 420 boys class was won by 2013 Youth national champion tim riley and his new crew James taylor. Sarah norbury and Mari Davies took the girls 420 title holding their place as top female crew throughout the regatta. For the 29er title, Owen Bowerman and Morgan Peach tussled all week with 2013 Youth national champion and 2013 29er World Championship silver medallist Marcus Somerville and his crew Isaac Mchardie for the top spot but fell short by a single point, giving the Kiwi sailors their second consecutive Youth national title. Scotland’s Jamie Calder claimed his first rYA Youth nationals title in radial fleet which saw competition become extremely tight once the qualifying series determined the Gold fleet. Ellie Cumpsty claimed victory
in the radial female fleet by an impressive 38 points. the Spitfire class was a tight affair with Weymouth duo Sam Barker and ross McFarline and Olivier Greber and Jess Eales swapping first and second place all week. two race wins on the penultimate day of racing was enough to give Barker and McFarline the Youth national title. James tilley, rYA Youth nationals Event Manager, said: “It has been a fantastic week of racing at WPnSA, on the behalf of the rYA I would like to thank the huge team of volunteers, the venue and all of the sailors for making it an excellent event.” Double Olympic gold medallist Sarah Gosling OBE, who formed part of the rYA’s Selection Panel at WPnSA this week, added: “I have been really impressed with the standard of racing this week.”

West Wind inspires The winners of a national limerick competition to find the best poems in celebration of life at sea have been announced by one of the UK’s oldest maritime charities, the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society. The charity, which this year celebrates its 175th anniversary, launched the competition to raise awareness of its work providing financial support to ex-seafarers and encouraging those in need to come forward for help. The competition, now in its third year, received entries from across the UK and was judged by poet, broadcaster and comedian, Ian McMillan and supported by The National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations. The competition saw participants penning five line poems about the sea and the men and women who dedicate their lives to the ocean as well the challenges they face. The winning limerick came from Peter hamill from Accrington who wrote:
Silver lining at World Cup A broken finger proved no problem for eilidh McIntyre and as she and Sophie Weguelin closed off an impressive week of World Cup racing in hyeres, France, with a silver medal in the 470 Women’s event on 26 April. The european bronze medallists Weguelin and McIntyre confirmed their participation at this final World Cup event of the season at the very last minute, after McIntyre broke her finger in a training accident back in February, missing the Palma edition of the series three weeks previously. In the 18 and under category, the winner was 18 year old Jade Cuttle from Selby, North Yorkshire, whose limerick was inspired by her Grandfather’s stories of his service in the Royal Navy. Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, Chief executive, Commodore Malcolm Williams said: “We were delighted with the entries to this year’s limerick competition. “The past 12 months have again shown the importance of our work. We received 650 new applications for assistance and in total paid out over £1.4 million in 2,200 cases of need showing our work is as important today as it was 175 years ago.” Ian McMillan commented: “I wanted to support this competition because my dad was in the Navy for 30 years... The limericks were extremely creative and really captured the feel of seafaring.” The winners will receive a recording of their poems being read by Ian McMillan, as well as an engraved Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society barometer. www.shipwreckedmariners.org.uk

WINdSUrferS BAttLe AroUNd HAyLINg A wonderful sunny Good Friday greeted the 80 plus competitors for the annual Round Hayling Island Windsurf and Paddle Board Race organized by Hayling Island Sailing Club Competitors face a number of challenges in this historic race, including navigating under the road bridge that links the island to the mainland, sailing through the remnants of the old railway bridge as well as battling through the narrow entrance to Langstone Harbour before the long grueling slog across the
seafront to complete the race at Hayling Island Sailing Club. This year’s event saw over 40 windsurfers complete the race and the overall winner was Robert Kent of Calshot Activity Centre, with his wife Annette taking honours in the women’s section. Race organiser John Rees commented: “This year’s event was a tough race, the easterly wind conditions meant that the sailors had to work really hard, but we had a great day and hopefully next year we will see even more finish.”

Squeaky clean
It is fast approaching holiday season and while you are planning your beach, yacht and evening outfits spare a thought for your battered wash bag, time for an upgrade? It is something that is never considered but a decent wash bag will see you through thick and thin. This handmade wash bag from Quba made from durable, recycled sailcloth not only hints at your passion but also promises to last. Big enough for all your essentials (and some) it is also easy to keep clean and pliable to fit into that final nook you have left in your suitcase. RRP: £35 Quba.com
Homeward bound
Gearing up for one of the biggest races in the sailing calendar, the Volvo Ocean Race, Musto have created an entire range of clothing around the event. This jacket, dubbed Alicante, commemorates the beginning of the race that is due to kick off from its namesake in Spain on the 4 October. A race that will be a test of skill and resilience, aspects that have been woven into each Musto product; this jacket incorporates the technology from those worn by the teams but is redesigned for us in a lightweight fabric and summer bright pink. Meaning you will stay cool, dry and on trend. RRP: £130 Musto.com
2014Short and sweet
Broderie anglaise has become a seasonal musthave. Seen on shirts, dresses and skirts the delicate needlework is a spring essential. Each and every high-street designer is turning their hand to this trend and coming up with new twists and fun inspirations. This month we are looking at White Stuff’s take. A smart pair of cotton shorts is given an effortlessly feminine makeover. Wear with some colourful wedges, matching accessories and a lightweight top for an understated formal look. RRP: £39.99 Whitestuff.com

Modern classic
Orange is a hard colour to pull off and a difficult one to get right, but Henri Lloyd has hit the nail on the head with this one. Injecting the bright colour into bold striped polo creates a modern classic. Wear with a pair of jeans or shorts and your summer look is complete; smarten up with a brown leather belt and shoes. RRP: £60 Henrilloyd.com
Looking sharp
Each year pastels and candy colours burst into our wardrobe, injecting bright bursts into our stale winter style and forcing us out of our berry coloured cocoons. This year take it a step further by shrugging off the formalities of suiting with this casually slim blazer. Wear with a pair of chinos, or opt for the double denim look this summer, a tee will do but if you want to step it up a gear opt for a light cotton shirt. RRP: £145 Crewclothing.co.uk

GEOFF HOLT
YJA YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2010
The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.
St George’s Day Breakfast MIKE Golding swapped his oilskins for a business suit then he addressed a sell-out breakfast meeting in aid of a Hampshire charity, the Rose Road Association. Organised to coincide with St George’s Day, more than 60 delegates attended the event at the Hilton Hotel,
Southampton to hear Mike share some of his record-breaking yachting experiences spanning two decades. The event was organised by the Rose Road Association to help raise awareness of the work they do with profoundly disabled young people in Hampshire. Based at the Bradbury Centre in
Abseil The Tower THE Wetwheels Foundation charity has secured a number of places to abseil the Tower on Sunday 31 August. Wetwheels is moored directly below the Spinnaker Tower so you can look down and think of all the good you are doing if, at any point, you need inspiration during your descent. We will be serving celebratory drinks on board Wetwheels to successful abseilors on the day. To request an Expression of Interest form, please email office@wetwheels.co.uk
BAE to the rescue BAE Systems Maritime Services in Portsmouth stepped in at short notice to ensure Wetwheels got her spring clean just in time of a busy season ahead. Based within Portsmouth Dockyard, the Maritime Services team took time out to give Wetwheels a complimentary lift and scrub saving the charity a several hundred pounds, money which can now be used to take more disabled, disadvantaged and elderly people on the water. Les Gregory, Product and services Training Director at BAE said: “Wetwheels is a fantastic organisation and we are delighted to have this opportunity to
help them out so they can continue to give people an experience of the Solent they might otherwise never have.” Wetwheels is a nine metre catamaran based at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth which has been designed especially to take disabled people powerboating. She is powered by twin Suzuki 300 HP outboard engines. Keith Plumridge, skipper of Wetwheels said; “We are obviously delighted by the generosity of BAE. A weedy bottom can increase fuel consumption by up to 25 per cent so this is a great help to us.” www.wetwheels.co.uk
Vancouver Island GOOD luck to Spike Kane who will be attempting to circumnavigate Vancouver Island off the coast of Canada this summer in his 1993 Corsair F27 trimaran. The 800-mile passage will see Canadian disabled sailor become the first disabled yachtsman to make the journey single-handed. Spike said: “I have sailed these waters as an able bodied sailor many times
but this will be my first multi day venture as a disabled sailor. I will be anchoring of an evening and sailing during the daylight hours. No land crew or chase boat. I am a T1 paraplegic with limited use of my left arm but pretty good dexterity in both hands.” Spike has made the crossing from Seattle to the San Juan Islands where he intends to start his journey this summer.
Southampton, Rose Road operate a special needs school alongside their daycare services. They also provide outreach services and much needed respite care so they can help relieve the burden of care on parents with profoundly disabled children.

thread your own rope through it. Mooring buoys can by very heavy so this is a job for two people.
mooring buoyS
n Finally, secure the rope by hooking it over a cleat. Make sure the rope goes through the bow roller or a fairlead.
Remember… n If you can’t reach the buoy don’t over stretch yourself or you could risk ending up in the water or dropping your boat hook! If you miss, the skipper will have another go.
Sometimes when you are out on the water you might want to stop for a spot of lunch, perhaps sit and soak up the sunshine and chill out or maybe you want to find somewhere nice to stay overnight. One way to keep yourself secure in your chosen location is by picking up a mooring buoy. Your helm will have selected a mooring in a sheltered position and you can help by looking to see what mooring buoys are available to pick up. As well as helping to spot your mooring you might be asked to go to the foredeck and pick up the buoy, so here’s what to do . . .
and call out how far away you are (make sure when you head to the foredeck you take the boathook and a mooring line with you).
n Your helmsman will approach the buoy in the same direction as the other moored boats – into tide and wind – which will help him slow down and stop.
n You will need to lean down, stay low and keep yourself secure, then using the boat hook scoop up the rope attached to the pick up buoy and shout to the helm when you’ve got it safe on board. If there isn’t a pick up buoy there could just be a looped rope that you have to pick up.
n Your skipper is unlikely to be able to see the mooring buoy as you approach so you have to be his eyes and point out the buoy
n If there is no pickup buoy and no rope on the mooring, you will need to hook the mooring buoy with your boat hook and

Solent based dinghy sailor david henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating.
Sailing then and now
Youth leads way to Olympic success In the almost seven decades since the end of the Second World War, the sport of dinghy sailing has undergone a number of huge revolutions.
A
Cadet dinghies being raced hard in one of the first ever Cadet Weeks, held at Burnham on Crouch. Credit : Courtesy F. Armes
They have seen it change from an elitist activity to a highly popular sport that is accessible to all. But the one way in which dinghy sailing has changed the most is in the way that it has become a leading sport for young people. In the years before the war, then immediately after, there was little place for younger people in a dinghy. even the first of the post-war dinghy designs, Jack holt’s Merlin (later the Merlin Rocket) had the novelty of being intended as a boat crewed by women! At this time, the concept of the ‘teenager’ and the explosion of music driven youth culture was still a full decade away. It was in this environment that, in 1947, an American sailor, Clark Mills drew up the lines for a simple small boxy pram dinghy that would become the Optimist. Taking the view that you “don’t learn to ride a bike on a tandem” Clark felt that children would relish being able to get afloat, sailing and being responsible for their own boats and in this respect he was right! Some 200,000 Optimists have been built since then, with the boat becoming a full International Class that is very much the entry portal into the world of competitive sailing. A measure of the success of the boat can be seen in the statistics: At the 2012 Olympic Regatta alone, almost 50 per cent of the competitors had started their sailing careers in Optimists. even as Clark was designing the Optimist, ‘Teddy’ haylock, the editor of yachting World, was also working on a project to create a boat for the youth of this country. haylock could easily be described as a visionary. he thought that young sailors shouldn’t just have a simple boat to get them afloat, but a modern, demanding dinghy, complete with spinnaker, that would stretch and enhance their skills. A strong believer in teamwork, haylock wanted a two person boat, so that the baby boomers’ siblings and friends could all sail together. As he was already working with Jack holt on the Merlin, it made sense for haylock to go to Jack with his ideas with the result being the Cadet dinghy.
holt, with the help of Bell Woodworking, came up with a plan that meant that the Cadet could be easily built at home and the class was launched. There were many who questioned the need for a youth boat, for this was still the era when children should be seen but not heard but these old values were fast being swept away in the new age of post war Britain. Like the Optimist, the Cadet was an immediate success, with Cadet Week, which used to be held at the Royal Corinthian yC at Burnham on Crouch, attracting huge fleets that would bring to the fore a new breed of exciting international sailors. The Mirror dinghy would later join the Cadet whilst Optimist sailors would have Ian Proctor’s innovative, polypropylene Topper to advance into. It is no exaggeration to say that the rapid growth in the UK as a powerhouse of success at Olympic and International level is down to these boats. To these entry level boats would be added more advanced dinghies such as the Laser and the 420, which with its trapeze and spinnaker, was a springboard into the top level of performance dinghy sailing. In recent times, with the growing influences of skiff sailing, these boats have been joined by the 29er, the smaller version of the 49er/49erFX Olympic skiffs whilst both windsurfing and multi-hull sailing are now also included as youth sailing disciplines In the early 1970s, youth Sailing went international, with the first ever youth Sailing Championships, an event that has been held every year since and now attracts a huge entry. Just how important the youth sailing scene has become can be seen in the growth of the UK youth Nationals, a week long event held during the easter holidays. This year’s Nationals, held at the Olympic venue at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Centre, saw a record breaking entry of nearly 400 competitors in 300 boats. It is not just the numbers that are eye catching, as there was an incredible display of talent on show, with the winners going on to represent the UK at the 2014 youth World Championships in Portugal.

When they get there, the UK Team will have been well prepared, schooled in the RyA Squad system and well able to master the pressures of competition both afloat and ashore. The rise of youth sailing now reflects the importance of youth
to the furtherance of modern society. The UK can be proud of the young sailors it produces, for they will not only bring success in the immediate future, but as they move up into the adult classes, they will bring the country future successes.

Yacht hulls that are in generally good condition - the majority of cases - can be happily over-coated provided following some simple prep.
PreParation
rub down flaky areas and/or patch prime any areas where the original substrate is perhaps starting to show through. if the hull appears smooth and in generally good condition then a light rubbing with wet and dry paper will provide a physical key and help subsequent coats adhere that much better.
if possible, apply antifouling during late morning or early afternoon on a calm, dry day. try to avoid surface moisture and the on-set of overnight dew, as this may spoil freshly applied anti-foul. Use a high quality ‘outdoor’ masking tape around the waterline and either remove completely, or mask off anodes, shafts and fittings with silver foil. Lay down some old plastic sheeting or lightly soak the ground with water to prevent dust rising.
Michael Hop, Seajet General Manager, shares practical tips and advice on the best way to apply a ‘traditional’ self-polishing antifoul. First rule of thumb is to try not to scrimp on the cost of your antifoul or indeed the amount you need to apply. Having paid for a lift-out it would be a shame to waste the opportunity of doing as good a job as possible while your yacht is out of the water.
aPPlication
Certainly in the case of ‘traditional’ self-polishing (eroding) antifouls, the thickness of film coating applied at the outset will have a bearing on performance and longevity. We advise using a medium-ply mohair roller (min 6 inch width) to achieve the correct film thicknesses required; keep a brush close by for those hard to reach areas. Avoid using the plastic foam type rollers because these tend not to allow enough film coating to be applied, and can ‘slip’ across the hull when applying at difficult angles. Warm antifouling is easier to apply and gives a smoother finish, so keep antifoul at no lower than room temperature prior to use. immediately before applying, try warming the paint by standing the closed tin in a bucket part filled with hot water. stir thoroughly before applying; heavy pigments can settle so regular stirring is important for even and consistent coats. Use vertical and horizontal brush strokes and try to avoid spreading paint out from the centre in a star pattern, as this action means the coatings may not be going on thick enough. Apply extra coats on the leading edge of the keel and rudder where water friction is strongest, and at the waterline where sunlight increases the potential for weed and shell growth. if your yacht has been standing for up to 6 months prior to re-immersion, then re-application of at least one coat prior to immersion is always a good idea. www.seajetpaint.com
Remember
n Always read the health and safety advice on labels n Wear protective clothing and glasses or goggles to prevent eye contact and also wear a hat, rubber gloves and a face mask to further protect any exposed areas of skin and protect against dust inhalation. n Always work in ventilated areas and allow plenty of airflow. Wear a suitable respirator if in doubt. n Always wet-sand antifoul as the dust is toxic. n Do not eat or smoke when handling paint and antifoul. n Keep cans sealed at all times and dispose of waste paint and brushes at a re-cycling centre.

MINI MASTER CLASS PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
IS YOUR RIGGING FEELING THE STRAIN? THE class Master FOR any sailor, the integrity of your rig is absolutely fundamental to your peace of mind. If you are at all worried, then every single creak and groan as you put the boat under pressure becomes a cause for concern. That’s why it’s so important to take the time to thoroughly go over your rig. Vaughan Marsh, RYA Chief Instructor Sail Cruising says: “There are a number of
tell-tale signs of wear and tear you can look for straight away and you can also carry out a number of maintenance jobs which will help prolong the life of your rig; however if your rig has serious faults then you will need to get an expert in to have a look at it.” LEFT: HereChecking are just athe few belt pointers tension on is correctly what to look adjusted for in terms basic wear tear on helpsofprevent futureand problems. your rig...
Basic checklist You can find out a lot by getting up the mainmast in a bosun’s chair and having a close look. Take a digital camera with you to record any marks or damage to assist with asking for advice or for future reference. Starting at the top of the mast, here are a few classic things to look for:

ALL AT SEA MAY 2014 1. Check the nav light attachment and any other light fittings, make sure they are still firmly secured. Also check the quality of the light fitting. Crazing on the plastic will significantly affect the quality of the light. 2. Check the top of the furling gear. If you have had a halyard wrap, look out for the ‘pigtail effect’ whereby the wire halyard has started to unwind and breakdown, or excessive chafe on a rope halyard. In extreme cases the forestay can also be damaged. Check all sheaves are running freely and in good working order. If there is too much sideways or vertical play in a sheave, then it’s time to look at replacing it. If sheaves are not running freely, they may simply require some silicon spray. 3. Check all ropes for signs of fraying. There is no harm in swapping ropes ‘end for end’ leading the worn top end back to the cockpit and using the less worn end at the top of the mast. 4. Check the mainsail track looking for excessive wear, loose fasteners and loose joints in the track. Many masts have damaged track where the headboard car sits whilst sailing. Inspect the whole of the mast including the sheave boxes for signs of cracking. 5. Check all shackles and pins to ensure they are tight and in good condition, make sure they are wired or cable tied to prevent them coming loose. 6. Check all wire terminal backing plates for splits. Depending on your level of knowledge, you might need to check with an expert if you are unsure. 7. Check for missing or loose rivets. If there is any play in them, they need to be drilled out and replaced. 8. Check your radar mounting if you have one. This is vulnerable to breaking as it is heavy and prone to getting swiped by the jib. 9. Also to be checked is the security of the spreaders, both the inboard ends that are
attached to the mast and the outboard ends that the rigging passes through or is attached to. If you have spreader end protectors on the tips, take them off and inspect for corrosion underneath. If you don’t have protectors, it’s well worth fitting them to protect the sail. 10. Check the sail entry gate. If the mainsail slides have been falling out over the course of the season then the pin or stop is missing, which is simple to replace. 11. Run your hands carefully along wire rigging, any bumps or broken strands mean the rigging is damaged and will need to be replaced. 12. If your mast is keel stepped, check the drain holes in the mast are clear. Salt water sitting in the bottom of your mast is a breeding ground for corrosion. Boom checklist There are three clear points of weakness on a boom: the gooseneck, vang and mainsheet. These are going to be put under a lot of strain while out sailing, so it’s essential that they are firmly attached. 1. Check for any signs of stress cracks or excessive wearing. 2. Make sure that the gooseneck toggle has a washer above and below where it fits into the bracket and perhaps the boom. 3. Ensure the sheaves are running freely. These are just a few basic checks, but they are well worth carrying out if you want to have some peace of mind out at sea. If you aren’t confident in your rig, it’s very difficult to enjoy a good sail. Remember, if it doesn’t look right it probably isn’t! BY EMMA SLATER
PLANNING
Careful preparation is the key. If you are not confident with reversing a trailer, then perhaps consider practising in your driveway or somewhere secluded before heading to the slipway. Ensure your tow vehicle will cope. Check the local tide tables in advance to ensure you have enough water for launching and recovery, also look at the conditions on the water, will they make launching more tricky?
PREPARATION
Top tips for trouble free towing, launch and recovery GET HITCHED WITHOUT A HITCH
When you buy a sports boat or a RIB, your main concern is whether you can actually drive the thing without crashing into pontoons and other boats, navigate without getting lost and deal with any mechanical issues said boat may throw at you. What many of us overlook is that, unless you are fortunate enough to own a waterside property or pay for a regular mooring, you are probably going to have to know a bit about towing too. Not only do you have to tow your boat safely to a destination but you also then have to back the thing down a slipway, generally with an audience eagerly awaiting catastrophe. But fear not, we have has a few handy pointers to help ensure that you tow safely, securely and confidently.
LEGALITIES
Before you do anything, you will need to know whether you are legally allowed to tow in the first place. Requirements differ depending on when you passed your driving
test. If you passed prior to January 1997 you will be entitled to drive any vehicle/trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes. After 1997 you are allowed to tow a trailer up to 750kg on a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes. In addition to this, you can tow a trailer over 750Kg provided the weight of the trailer and load does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. Whenever you passed your test, you are going to need at least third party insurance cover for your trailer while towing.
SIZE MATTERS
BEFORE LEAVING
Bear in mind that trailers often sit idle for ages and are then immersed in salt water before sitting idle again. It’s a recipe for rust and wheel bearings are always vulnerable. Keep a track of when the trailer was last serviced and leave nothing to chance. Check the ball hitch mechanism is working correctly and once you’ve hooked up the light board, make sure that it’s working correctly. Remember to attach the safety lanyard and also raise the jockey wheel. Make sure everything is lashed down safely and, if there is an outboard on the back, make sure you have tilted it up and the propeller is covered. Once on the road, remember that the speed limit is 60mph if you are towing.
PREPARING TO LAUNCH
If you are towing an oversize or overweight trailer, you are breaking the law. A trailer drawn by an ordinary car must not exceed seven metres in length excluding the hitching device. The combined length of vehicle and tow must not exceed 18 metres on vehicles built before June 1 1998 and 18.75 metres on vehicles built after that date. In addition to this, a trailer must not exceed 2.3m in width. In terms of the boat itself, you will need to fit special markers if it projects more than 305mm from one or both sides of the towing vehicle. There are also restrictions on weight: If you tow a small trailer without brakes, the weight of the trailer is limited to 50 per cent of the kerb weight of the car or 750kg, whichever is less. When towing larger trailers that have brakes fitted, the weight of the vehicle should not exceed 85 per cent of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle as a rule of thumb.
On arrival check out the slipway to ensure that your car will be able to handle the slope. Bear in mind that rear wheel drive cars can struggle on slippery ramps while front wheel drives suffer from wheel spin if the weight of the trailer is excessive. If you have been on a long trip, it’s worth bearing in mind that immersing hot wheel bearings may create a vacuum as the bearings rapidly cool, this draws in water and washes out the grease. If this is the case, allow time for them to cool. Before you launch the boat, ensure that you have removed the light board, loaded your boat up with the relevant supplies and, most importantly, inserted the bungs, you would be amazed how often people forget! At this point, you are ready to go.
You have managed to get your boat to water but how much thought have you given to getting it in and out? Unless you keep your boat on the water permanently, it is a pretty fundamental aspect of using your boat. Much like towing, it’s fair to say, that it can also be pretty stressful if you don’t know what you are doing. Many of us will have witnessed some fairly unorthodox methods of launching - the classic being unhitching of boat from car followed by said boat rolling uncontrollably down the slipway. This kind of thing really should be avoided at all costs so here are few useful tips to ensure that launch and recovery are hitch free.
5-4-3-2-1 . . . LAUNCH
The rear of the boat needs to float so that it can be reversed or pushed off the trailer. Car wheels are best kept well away from seawater. Reverse down the slipway then push the boat off the trailer or hop into the boat and reverse it away. If the gradient of the slipway is shallow which prevents you launching with the trailer attached to the car, use a rope or metal extension bar to enable the trailer to be reversed further into the water. This can be achieved by the following method: ■ At the top of the slipway, lower the jockey wheel and put the handbrake on. ■ Chock the trailer wheels ■ Connect a long line between the trailer and the tow hook using bowlines. ■ Disconnect the trailer ■ Drive the car forwards to take up the slack in the line. Remove the handbrake and the chocks and slowly reverse down the slipway while an assistant keeps the trailer in line ■ To avoid the boat sliding off the trailer when backing down the slipway ensure the winch strap remains attached to the boat along with an additional safety chain or line between the boat and trailer
RECOVERY
There are a number of different options here but it always helps to have two people. In some cases, it may be best to stop the boat at the slip and back the trailer into the water and manoeuvre it on by hand. Otherwise you may have to drive the boat on to the trailer. This is particularly useful when you are dealing with a steep slipway.
DRIVING ON TO A TRAILER
This calls for a bit of finesse and precision. You will need to ensure that the trailer is submerged so that there is enough depth to get your boat on to it and then trim your engine up to the point where the prop will not ground. Drive on to the trailer ensuring you have just enough speed for steerage. When the boat is on the trailer, either attach the winch strap to the forward D-ring or lash a line from the boat to the trailer. From here you can generally get it properly lined up on the trailer with a bit of fiddling about and usually you can use the trailer winch to get the boat fully pulled up and you are on your way. So there you have it. Stress free towing, launch and recovery. With a little care and thought, you can ensure that the main excitement when you go boating is out on the water!

P1 takes racing to the heart of London
IN March Powerboat P1 staged an impressive two-day exhibition in London’s Royal Victoria Dock. The site of some of the capital’s most historic water, the venue played host to the season launch of the UK P1 SuperStock and P1 AquaX Championships. Eight P1 Panther race boats entertained fans on the water with closely fought match racing down the length of the dock with London-based IFX Racing taking first place in the final heat. The team of Nick Williams and Martin Robinson took the overall win, followed by P1’s brand new partner boat Lycamobile in second, Pertemps in third and Typhoo in fourth place. Winning pilot Nick Williams said: “We have spent a lot of time on the water, since buying the new boat a few months ago, so we were well prepared for today, and we didn’t expect any other result.
“We’re looking good for the start of the season, and we are going for the win. But there are still a couple of months to go and time for the other teams to catch up!” With more than 30 racers taking part in fast and furious AquaX racing, it was Richard Cable who clocked up enough points in the 300 class to secure the inaugural Royal Victoria Cup. In the 250 class Steve Hockney took his first overall win while Mat Shipley took line honours in the 200 class. NEW SEASON, NEW SPONSOR The new Lycamobile Group sponsorship deal for P1 is one of the most significant commercial deals in the sport for some time and demonstrates that powerboat racing is capable of attracting the major brands again. Lycamobile is the official mobile partner to Powerboat P1 and the deal features
the flagship brand and associated travel management business LycaFly. Their support forms part of a broader business partnership between the two companies. A Lycamobile-branded boat will race in both the UK and USA SuperStock Championships. P1 also announced a record race season for this year, with some 70 races scheduled at 12 leading venues on both sides of the Atlantic. A five-venue UK season and expansion of P1’s race programme in the USA has attracted more than 20 SuperStock teams and some 100 AquaX riders. P1’s double bill of AquaX and SuperStock racing will feature a number of new, marquee locations, including Cardiff and Bournemouth in the UK and Tampa and Jacksonville in the USA. Bournemouth, named Best UK Coastal Resort at the British Travel Awards, will
host the first UK race weekend at the end of May, with Cardiff as the flagship event in late July. All the race action will be broadcast in 24 half-hour weekly TV programmes from May to October domestically in the USA on MAVTV and Fox Sports Florida, reaching more than 40-million homes, and in the UK on the region’s premier sports channel, Sky Sports.

Navigating the course as one flotilla, the Challenge teams will take on all that the elements can throw at them as they seek to complete anything between 120 and 175 miles a day.

The Sportbridge is accessed using open steps, offering an uninterrupted view aft from the deck saloon. In the cockpit, a 3.9m tender garage is able to take a jet RIB plus a whole range of toys. Cockpit-surround seating and a full wet bar give plenty of space to relax.
Overnight stops in selected ports en-route will give teams the opportunity to get a close look at England’s beautiful coastline. This open-styled offshore endurance challenge is attracting adventurers from all over the UK; including private boat owners, lifeboatmen and maritime professionals.
FATHER-SON TEAM SET FOR SEASON Father and son powerboat racing team, Jelf Racing (Colin and Ben Jelf) are busy preparing for the start of the 2014 British RYA Powerboat Racing campaign as they get set to battle in this year’s Powerboat GP Championship. MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON MARINAS AND HARBOURS
LOWESTOFT HAVEN MARINA School Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR33 9NB Tel: 01502 580300 lowestofthaven@abports.co.uk
The Suffolk seaside resort of Lowestoft - officially the most easterly town in Britain – is home to Lowestoft Haven Marina, which is a proud recipient of the Yacht Harbour Association’s five gold anchor award. BACKED by Oulton Broad and offering the best of both worlds with both coastal and Broads access, the venue is popular with berth holders and visitors alike. In total 186 berths are available at this marina, part of the ABP Marina’s operation at Lowestoft. Berthing is spread
across two sites, the main School Road site and the newer development at Hamilton Dock. Both are ideal locations offering easy access for leisure boat users to the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, as well as the shores of Holland, Belgium, and France.
DEVELOPMENT AND FACILITIES FIRST opened in 2003, Lowestoft Haven Marina has the benefits of two distinct and separate sites. The School Road site is situated on Lake Loathing, which lies less than two nautical miles from the bridge at the Port of Lowestoft and five minutes from Mutford Lock. The Hamilton Dock site is situated within the outer harbour and is ideal for direct access to and from the sea. The School Road site offers 140 fullyserviced pontoon berths, and gives 24 hour access to berths at all states of tide. All berths are located within a few metres of a portable fresh-water supply. Each has a 16 amp electricity supply, charged on a metered basis for berth holders and included in the daily rate for visitors; 32 amp supply is also possible, subject to availability. Ample manoeuvring space between each berth and pier makes berthing simple and straightforward. The floating pontoons are state of the art design System 2000 supplied by Walcon Marine, and are strong and stable. The new 46 berth marina in Hamilton Dock – also of Walcon Marine construction - allow for easy sea access, and boast CCTV and security locking. Lowestoft Haven Marina was designed to ensure that each berth had easy access
and generous manoeuvring space between berths and piers. Situated on the main site, the marina owns and operates a 70-tonne boat hoist, capable of hauling, launching, loading and unload vessels of up to 27.5m (90ft) in length and with a beam of up to 6.1m (20ft). Operations take place Monday to Friday during normal working hours. However, in an emergency they are able to haul or launch outside these hours. Boat storage is available ashore or afloat, including inside storage, which is subject to availability. The marina is well-serviced, with diesel fuel and bottled-gas supplies available, as are refuse, waste oil and battery-disposal facilities. A workshop offers repair and engineering services, and can also be found on-site. Luxury toilets, showers and laundry facilities are available onshore for use of berth holders and visitors. The marina offers accessible facilities for disabled, as well as family facilities for those with youngsters. A joint venture between Lowestoft Boat Sales and Norfolk Boat Sales provides competitive brokerage rates and flexible storage packages, and the experienced teams can advise on both power and sail boats.
EXPLORING ASHORE
AT the centre of Lowestoft, visitors can discover the once flourishing fishing port, two yacht marinas, fish market, docks and traditional smokehouses together with a Heritage Vessel Mooring, which has a changing programme of visiting craft throughout the year. Lowestoft is renowned for the quality and cleanliness of its beaches and it currently holds two ENCAMS Blue Flag Awards for the beaches north and south of Claremont Pier. These beaches are considered to be some of the very best in Northern Europe. An exciting development to the seafront at Lowestoft is the Royal Plain Fountains. The fountains consist of 74 individual interactive water jets with variable lighting, which form a striking centrepiece to the recently enhanced Royal Plain area, as well as interactive play for children of all ages and
forms an illuminated spectacle during the evening hours. Heading north of the town you will find the idyllic Historic High Street and Triangle Market Place, which offer a wide range of traditional, independent and unusual retail outlets. The Triangle Market Place with its unique architectural market canopies ‘The Eastern Sails’ holds regular specialist and weekly markets and various events throughout the year. For dining out, the on-site Third Crossing has an excellent bar as well as a steak and seafood restaurant, tempting sailors and non-sailors alike. A newly installed saltwater tank has allowed the chefs to offer a wide variety of lobster dishes. Meals are served from brunch to dinner, with traditional Sunday lunchtime roasts a particular favourite.

the town of Lowestoft in suffolk can trace its roots back to Viking times, and was recorded in the Doomsday Book as a farming village of some 20 families. It grew notoriety as a fishing port in the Middle ages, rivaling the neighbouring town of Great Yarmouth for its trade in herring, and also fishing cod and plaice. By the early 19th century, up to 1000 boats were moored at Lowestoft. the
arrival of the railway in the town saw a huge boom in its fishing industry, alongside a significant growth in its importance as a trading port. the port played an important part during the two world wars, as a base for naval operations, including commandeered trawlers which were armed specially for the war effort. thanks to its wide sandy beaches, the town has also held appeal through the ages as a traditional British seaside
resort, with the first tourists making the trip to bathe there as far back as 1760. sometimes referred to as the ‘sunrise coast’, today the town boasts blue flag beaches, piers and plenty of bucket and spade action – attracting in the region of one million visitors every year. as a long-time hub for the north sea oil and gas industries, Lowestoft is now finding additional significance as the renewables industry takes hold, much of which is focused on the region.

BY road, Lowestoft is well-served by a-roads linking the town directly to the south, north and west. nearby, the city of norwich is a 45 minute drive. For public transport, Lowestoft haven Marina’s hamilton Dock site is within walking distance of railway stations at Lowestoft: with direct connections to norwich, Ipswich, and London. the school Road site is within easy reach of oulton Broad north, (to norwich) and oulton Broad south, (to Ipswich and London). anglian buses run the X2 service from Lowestoft to norwich, whilst the circular gives access between the two sites.
By sea, Lowestoft haven Marina is approached via a narrow channel, and small craft should be aware of the restrictions this places on larger craft operating in the area. there are a large number of commercial vessels in the vicinity, this being a major cargo port. on approach, boaters are required to contact Lowestoft harbour control on VhF channel 14. a traffic light system operates within the Yacht Basin, although boaters should wait further instruction from the harbour controller. the marina offers a waiting pontoon in the outer trawl Dock.

cRuIseRs heading out from Lowestoft haven Marina are spoilt for choice, with the unique delights of the norfolk Broads and the challenges of the north sea both on hand. Mutford Lock marks the beginning of the Broads; a meandering network of navigable waterways that stretch for some 125 miles in total. Located at the western end of Lake Lothing, there are three bridges to be negotiated before reaching the lock — Lowestoft harbour bridge and the rail and road bridges at oulton Broad — all either lift or swing,
which require advance notice should you wish to navigate through them. as the largest broad in the Broads national park, the tranquil expanses of oulton Broad are well known for boating activities – from powerboat racing to canoeing to motor cruising. the Broad has much to offer, its banks lined with quaint boat houses and waterfront residences. the pretty nicholas everitt park makes for a pleasant stroll and gives a great vantage point. For respite from the hustle and bustle around the Lock, stop off for a spot of fishing in the quiet north Bay.
the open waters of the north sea promise plenty for the more adventurous. From Lowestoft, head north to Great Yarmouth and from there turn inland to explore the River Yare; be sure to co-ordinate your arrival with the bridge opening. or why not take in other well-known boating haunts of the region, such as the orwell, Blackwater or Medway. For a longer range cruise, set course for the thames and the lively capital, or even cross to the continent; the netherlands, France and Belgium are all accessible.

this as having a classier appeal than the Real Ale moniker. Individually small but collectively adding up to a significant consumer base, the new ‘craft beers’ term is in a twist of fate now providing the opening for the big brewers to enter into this market segment with their own ‘real ales’ despite being big. Some have done this with in-brewery small units, others via collaborations with established independent boutique breweries. A good in-house example is Old Crafty Hen from Moorlands Brewery, founded in 1711 but since 2000 owned by the larger Greene King in Bury St Edmonds, Moorlands has brewed Old Speckled Hen 4.5 per cent abv beer since 1979, created as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the MG car company, then in nearby Cowley. The cunningly worded Old Crafty Hen is billed as ‘Vintage Ale’, hinting at a revival recipe. Oak-aged before blending, it is a

ONCE upon a time, before motor transport and telephones, there were individual public houses in England’s towns and villages brewing their own beer on the premises for consumption by their own customers. Then brewing companies were established to supply all the pubs in the village - and beyond. Then there were mergers and the UK was down to six or so major brewers. These were much criticised by CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale for producing poor-tasting ‘industrial’ products. This provided the opportunity for small-scale brewers to make a comeback, often in a plant no bigger than a double garage, sometimes in the back of a pub, producing nearly hand-made ‘real ales’. Seemingly, in recent years, they have been opening all around the country faster than pubs are closing. Characterised as small batch production and striving to produce distinct flavours using different hops and grains, many have managed to subtly redefine themselves as ‘craft’ beers, seeing
meaty 6.5 per cent, rich mahogany in colour and impressively full of flavour - all the characteristics to make it a ‘real ale’ and a ‘craft’ beer. My tasting panel at the sailing club gave it a big thumbs up. It costs about £2.75 for 500ml at larger supermarkets. On the other hand, Adnams, the Southwold brewer, has established a collaboration with the boutique Camden Town Brewery in north London to produce South Town Red Ale at 4.9 per cent - a crafty name combining Southwold with Camden Town. Brewed using malted rye and Australian hops and with an aroma of tropical fruits and freshly baked bread, it was launched in March 2014. Find it in Adnams pubs mainly in East Anglia or from their Cellar and Kitchen Stores in London in Richmond and Store Street, Bloomsbury, WC1E or on line at www.adnams.co.uk. In Brittany, the local craft beer equivalent word is ‘Artisanal’. It means small batch brewing, often in a local farm barn and usually strong at six per cent or so. Flavoursome and distinctive, these French real ales are not exported so a must-try experience when cruising anywhere around Brittany. Look out for the Ar-Men or Rosko range of dark to golden beers. They are all ‘crafty’ and all worth a try.
