In a statement released on 24 May, a spokesperson for Stormforce Coaching, owners of the yacht, said: “This is a terrible moment for the families and friends of the crew of the yacht Cheeki Rafiki, Andrew, James, Paul and Steve. We all share in their sorrow after this tragedy. We would like to thank all those who have participated in the search efforts.” RYA CEO Sarah Treseder commented: “All at the RYA offer their most sincere condolences to the families and the friends
of the missing crew in this most difficult of times. “Our thanks go to the US Coast Guard, the UK authorities and government agencies with whom we have been in regular contact, as well as the merchant vessels involved in the search and the yachting community. “Many yachts changed course to sail through the search area and those that were able joined in the search effort. It has been a powerful reflection of the spirit that binds the boating community.”
Best racing ever as National Champs decided Nick Wood from Royal Burnham YC in his Farrier 27. In IRC 1, local harbour pilot, Jim Macgregor in Premier Flair (Elan 410) finished six points clear of Jackie and Rob Dobson in Jeronimo J133. In IRC 2, the results were turned on their head by Stephen Tiernan who scored two firsts to win the Class, (sailing Ruthless loaned to him by the Chairman of the Organising Committee); in second place was the Haven Insurance sponsored Enigma, sailed by Ian Braham. In IRC 3 Richard Freemantle won in his Dehler 29. Megan Pascoe won all six races she competed in but that was not enough to take the Tidal National Trophy from Simon Hill (Frensham Pond SC) who beat her by one point!

A second search by the US Coast Guard for the Beneteau 40.7, Cheeki Rafiki, was officially ended after US Navy personnel discovered the inverted hull of the yacht and found the life raft in situ, 1000 miles from the coast of Massachusetts, USA. The US Coastguard had been joined in its search by HM Coastguard, scores of private yachts and merchant vessels, after 200,000 people signed an online petition for the initial search to be resumed. However, on finding the windows shattered and the cabin entirely flooded, and using underwater imagery to ascertain that life raft was still in its storage space, the US Coast Guard suspended operations on the basis that there was nothing to suggest the crew were still alive. An RAF Hercules, which had been due to join the search, was stood down. A spokesperson for the US Coast Guard told All at Sea that it has no plans to salvage the vessel, and that there would be no further investigation undertaken. Skipper of the yacht, Andrew Bridge (21), and crew Steve Warren (52), Paul Goslin (56) and James Male (23) – all experienced offshore sailors - were returning the vessel after taking part in Antigua Week. Contact was lost with the yacht after it reported water ingress to the hull, and changed course towards the Azores in 15 May.
FROM PAGE 1: Bank holiday Sunday set the standard, and with 15-20 knots of breeze, bright sunshine and a great swell in Poole Bay, the conditions couldn’t get any better. On coming ashore the Flying Fifteens were heard to say that it was the best racing they had ever had. Light winds on the final day eventually developed into 6-9 knots breeze, which gave everyone a chance to attack or consolidate in their respective class. Ian Atkins in Boats.com did not need to sail the last race having already done enough to win the regatta overall and become J70 National Champion. In the J80 class, Patrick Liardet in Aqua J took first place from Phil Taylor in J.A.T. after taking into consideration countback, both were one point ahead of local, Dave Evans in Last Chance. Poole local, Duncan McCarthy won the J24 Nationals in Madeline with a convincing 13 point victory ahead of Weymouth sailor, Bob Turner in Serco. The MultiHull National Champion was Phil Cotton who sailed his Seacart 30 Buzz into first place, chased hard by

Martin Pearson, Chairman of the regatta’s organising committee commented: “It’s been an exciting and successful regatta with a record number of 181 entries this year. We’d like to thank the sponsor, International Paint who has confirmed support as sponsor for the 2016 Poole Regatta in conjunction with Haven Insurance. We’d also like to extend our thanks to all those involved in helping out with organisation and management of the event from Parkstone Yacht Club, Poole Yacht Club and the Royal Motor Yacht Club. We’re very much looking forward to the next regatta!” Full results: www.pooleregatta. co.uk/2014_results/

the madness of May
the past month has seen, sadly, the tragic loss of the four crew of Cheeki Rafiki dominating headlines in sailing and non-sailing media. Our thoughts and sympathies are with their families and friends, who refused until the last to give up hope of their survival. the spirit of the international boating community also translated into an incredible surge of support, both through online petitioning to re-start the search, and in a practical guise by those boats that were actually able to make their way towards the area and join the search. Although it was heartbreaking to hear that the hull had finally been found with the liferaft still on board, at least the ongoing efforts of the search teams enabled the certainty of that to be delivered to the families, however nightmarish the conclusion. the exact cause of the hull’s failing remains speculative, but this sad (thankfully, rare) unfolding of events reminds us all to check our equipment and think carefully about what safety measures we have whenever we set afloat.
Looking ahead
It’s a timely message, as, closer to our shores, May has brought plenty of people out onto the water, with the boating action hotting up,
Race 13 of the clipper Round the World Yacht Race, from Jamaica to New York, USa got underway on 24 May. PSP Logistics, Old Pulteney, and Derry~Londonderry~Doire crossed the line first, in that order, in a beautifully sunny, closely fought race start after heavy monsoon conditions and thunder eventually cleared up. Mark Light, clipper Race Deputy Race Director explained: “a typically caribbean easterly breeze of about 12 to 15 knots allowed for a stunning, tropical start to Race 13: The Grange Hotels Trophy, to New York. after a short delay to get the committee start boat on station, the start line was set and the fleet were busy jostling for position during pre-start. “at 1330 the gunshot sounded from coastguard cutter HMJS cornwall and an
even if the temperatures haven’t necessarily been doing the same. National Watersports Month has seen clubs up and down the country throwing open their doors to visitors, and it seems this initiative has really taken off. May also seems to have established itself as the month of the regional boat shows, and AAS has received lots of reports to indicate that these local boating showcases are rapidly growing in popularity, tempting enthusiasts and newcomers alike, and gradually enticing ever more exhibitors. AAS was particularly impressed with the vinyl-wrapped Sunseeker Portofino 40, (pictured above), on show at the recent British Motor Yacht Show; for more on this, see page 29. looking ahead, and, for seasoned racers, sailing newbies and shoreside spectators alike, June heralds the landmark event of the season, the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. Incredibly, this is the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK. It was fascinating this month to get a peek behind the scenes with the organisers, who have allowed us a glimpse at just what it takes to make the annual race happen. impressive start ensued and in my opinion, one of the most hotly contested in the clipper Race so far. PSP Logistics timed its start superbly, followed very closely by Old Pulteney and Derry~Londonderry~Doire and the rest of the fleet, looking magnificent as it heading away up wind.” after leaving the Jamaican coastline, the twelve teams competing in the world’s longest ocean race are now heading into lighter winds near the Windward Passage, which marks the exit from the caribbean Sea into the atlantic Ocean. The 1,420 mile race will see crews experience wind from every point of the compass as the yachts head away from the steady caribbean trade winds into the variable winds associated with the depressions coming from the North american land mass.
Five volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 boats have already covered around 30,000 nautical miles in their pre-event preparations, giving both teams and event organisers the opportunity to test equipment and crews on land and sea. The training runs have visited seven ports in the United States, china, Portugal, Spain (Lanzarote) and the UK ahead of the race that will start in autumn this year. “We’re delighted with how our new one-design boat, the volvo Ocean 65, is shaping up so far with all the crews reporting back to us positively on their progress so far,” said the event’s Race Director Jack Lloyd. The 12th edition of the volvo Ocean Race will begin in
alicante, Spain on 4 October, with an in-port race. With the first leg, alicante to cape Town, starting on 11 October, the teams will cover 38,739 nautical miles before the finish and a final in-port race in Gothenburg, Sweden on 27 June, 2015. The trips have also put the volvo Ocean Race’s Official logistics partner, Gac Pindar to the test, assisting all teams with their global transport challenges. One team taking full advantage of Gac Pindar’s services is the chinese entry, the Dongfeng Race Team. Their boat is now currently being shipped to Newark, USa, ahead of the team’s transatlantic crossing, which will be in full race mode.

Mystery wreck
ONe of england’s most important 17th century shipwrecks, the London, which is rapidly deteriorating on the seabed off Southend-on Sea in essex, is being excavated by english Heritage and cotswold archaeology to discover and retrieve many of the ship’s artefacts before they are lost forever. The London sank in the Thames estuary nearly 350 years ago in 1665 after mysteriously blowing up en route from chatham to The Hope, near Gravesend in Kent. The London was one of only three completed wooden Second Rate ‘Large Ships’ that were built between 1642 and 1660, and is the only one that survives. Now lying in two parts off Southend-on-Sea, the London played a significant role in British history as it formed part of an english Squadron sent in 1658 to collect charles ii and restore him to his throne in an effort to end the anarchy which followed the death of Oliver cromwell. english Heritage’s marine archaeologist Mark Dunkley said: “We are hoping to recover some rare and wellpreserved items which will provide a great insight into the english Navy during an unsettled time when Britain was emerging as a global power. “While the hull of the ship will remain on the seabed for the foreseeable future, the recovery and display of vulnerable artefacts will aid our understanding of life on board ship in the late 17th century and enable us to remove the wreck from our Heritage at Risk Register.” Over the next two years, english Heritage has commissioned cotswold archaeology to carry out an underwater excavation in order to find out just how much archaeological material survives. Finds recovered from the site will be curated by Southend Museums Service.

Bart’s centre opens THE Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre was officially launched at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, with a poignant introduction by Andrew Simpson’s close friends and Olympic sailing partners, Sir Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy OBE. Peter Allam, Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, sees the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre (ASSC) as a perfect fit alongside the other on site partners at WPNSA, delivering grass roots tuition right through to advanced race coaching for all age groups. The ASSC will also work with The Chesil Trust to deliver the ‘Rod Shipley Sail for a Fiver’ scheme that has introduced over 12,000 young people to sailing and through the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation will provide additional support to help young people who are passionate about sailing to reach their potential. “The RYA accredited centre will provide a focal point to remember Andrew Simpson’s outstanding achievements. Andrew was passionate about inspiring people of all ages to take up sailing and the ASSC represents a tremendous opportunity to help provide a pathway from beginner through
to whatever level individuals may aspire to, from recreational sailor to Olympic hopeful.” Honouring a member of the Olympic sailing team is particularly significant for Peter, himself an Olympic bronze medalist in 1984, as well as deputy competition manager during the 2012 Olympic Games, when Andrew won a second Olympic medal on home waters. Sir Ben Ainslie commented: “Today is a very poignant day, but also a really exciting one to be opening the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre. I would like to say a huge thanks to the Trustees of the Foundation, for all the efforts they have put in over the last 12 months, especially Leah (Andrew’s wife) and Iain (Percy) for their vision and leadership to get us to this point; and all the volunteers that have helped us. “We are starting our activity, including subsidising sailing sessions for children, on a local level, but want to partner with clubs from around the country with similar objectives; and ultimately do that on a global scale. It’s fantastic to see what has been achieved in such a short space of time; and I’m sure the great man would be very proud.”

Jack, a graduate of the Artemis Offshore Academy, the UK’s only training centre for solo and short-handed offshore racing, will join over 40 solo sailors on the start line of the prestigious Solitaire du Figaro, in Deauville, France on 8 June. In the 2013 edition of the 2000 mile solo, offshore race, Jack became the first ever British skipper to win the Rookie division. Now racing towards his second Solitaire du Figaro attempt in 2014, Jack’s solo Figaro campaign is supported by title sponsor GAC Pindar, the Artemis Offshore Academy and technical partners Overboard, Musto and Marlow ropes. The 45th edition of the Solitaire du Figaro will see skippers depart from Deauville, France, in their one design Figaro Bénéteau boats, before visiting Plymouth, Roscoff, a stopover in Les Sables d’Olonnes, and returning to the Channel with a finish in Cherbourg-Octeville. Pindar is already an established name in the world of offshore sailing, having supported Figaro campaigns as far back as April 2000. A more recent focus has been inshore racing, with teams competing on both the Extreme Sailing Series and the World Match Racing Tour.

PRIZES FOR SCHOOLS
Garmin is supporting the National Schools Sailing Association National Youth Regatta, taking place at Downs Sailing Club, Kent from 21-25 July. Hosted by the Kent Schools Sailing Association, the event attracts over 400 youth competitors sailing over 320 boats, making it one of the largest UK youth participation events.
Credit: Michael Austen THE modest genius of David Thomas, arguably Britain’s most prolific and influential yacht designer, was celebrated in style at a Royal Southern Yacht Club dinner packed with family, friends and many of those who have taken to the water in one of his boats. Variously described as the ‘proxy uncle’ to the ‘great, bold and loonies’ who go to sea, and the ‘Pied Piper of yacht designers’, David was lauded by numerous speakers for the immeasurable pleasure his many and various designs have provided over a career spanning half a century. The evening also marked David’s 25th year as a member of the Royal Southern. The main speaker Peter Poland, a long-standing friend of David, built many of his designs as co-owner of Hunter Boats. “People from all divisions of sailing have sailed out on a David Thomas design. They will go on forever,” he said. “He is also responsible for the largest one-design fleet in Round the Island Race history, 105 Sigma 33s, a record that will never be beaten.” Peter highlighted a number of David’s innovative design features, including hull chines which have since become commonplace, and the sheer range of his yachts, from Sonata and Impala to the Sigma 33 and 38, and from the 707 to 67-foot round-the-world Challenge yachts. He also raised the biggest laugh of the evening speculating on the ‘number of babies made in the forepeak of a David Thomas yacht’. Earlier on the Saturday, Chief Race Officer Tony Lovell had made the regrettable but necessary decision to cancel the day’s planned racing due to the gale force winds. Sunday’s parade of sail also fell foul of the conditions.
GBR TAKES ON YOUTH OLYMPICS
GREAT Britain is set to be represented for the first time in the Youth Olympic Games dinghy events, with the British Youth Sailing Team’s Hanna Brant securing a qualifying berth in the Byte CII class for the Games to be held in Nanjing, China, 16-28 August. At the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010, Britain was represented in just the windsurfing events, with Kieran Martin, the current ISAF Youth World Champion in the RS:X class, securing bronze for Team GB in the Techno 293. This second edition of the Youth Olympic Games will encompass all 28 sports on the programme for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Over 3,600 young athletes aged between 15 and 16 are expected to compete at the event, which includes the Byte CII one person dinghy for boys and girls, and the Techno 293 windsurfer for boys and girls. The Byte CII qualifier event, the Byte CII 2014 World Championship, took place in Riva del Garda and saw Laser
Dafty in a rafty AFTER competing in the 2014 J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race in his Quarter Tonner, Panic, owner Geoff Gritton is proposing to jump straight in to a life raft in a bid to raise funds for Sail4Cancer. Geoff plans to remain in the life raft until noon the following day, a period of some 20 hours. The life raft will be located in Cowes Yacht Haven. It is hoped that the Cowes Yacht Haven webcam can be pointed at the raft and then snap shots during the time can be taken. Geoff has so far set about raising awareness of his planned feat via his facebook page and on twitter, using the hashtag #daftyinarafty. To date, over £500 has been raised, and Geoff has gained additional support from a number of marine suppliers, including Spinlock, Slam, A-Glaze and English Braids. For the weight conscious racers taking part in the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, Sail4Cancer collection buckets will be placed at the entrances to the pontoon walkways so crews can lighten their pockets of loose change ahead of the race.

The inaugural Classic Boat Auction, run in partnership with Special Auction Services and henley Sales & Charter, is to be held at Beale Park near Reading on 7 June. It is thought to be the largest classic boat auction held in europe for the past 15 years. The auction includes traditional river craft, rowing and river memorabilia and model and toy boats, and promises a unique opportunity to buy at a specialist auction run by experts in both auctioneering and traditional boat brokering. One fine example is Lot 154, a magnificent MB278 Naval
Pinnance built in1914 by W White and Sons of Cowes. This little ship is a survivor, having recovered from three battleship sinking’s and a serious dockyard accident. Today she is fully restored and returned to Dunkirk in 2010 looking splendid. however the scars of her Dunkirk service still show in the bow, where machine gun bullets passed through on both port and starboard sides. The auction estimate is £50,000 to £70,000, and whoever buys her will celebrate her 100th birthday alongside the WWI centenary. There are 197 lots altogether with estimates ranging from £30 to £300,000.
Sandbanks show stoppers VISITORS were not disappointed when visiting the Sandbanks Boat Show, despite the unseasonable gales. A stunning line up of over 70 new boats were on display for Dorset’s largest boat show. Amongst the mix were the ‘Best of British’ manufactured boats including the highend motor yachts from Broom, Cockwells, Fairline, Princess and, from Poole’s home turf, Sunseeker. The largest boat to ever grace Salterns Marina was a Sunseeker 82 yacht (you’d need little more than a million to afford this little beauty) to the smallest vessel, a sea-going canoe with the latest electric engine. The film crew for the new series of Ben Fogle’s ITV programme,
harbour Lives, were on site filming the weekend’s activity and action and using the opportunity to meet boat owners, buyers and people in the trade, capturing how important boating is to the area’s economy. This show is firmly an established event on the boating calendar bringing an extensive and unprecedented mix of sports cruisers, high performance craft, fishing boats, RIBs and jet skis. In particular, this year, the Sealegs amphibious RIB grabbed much attention. This incredible all-terrain vehicle with its motorised, retractable and steerable wheels changes into a high-speed, ocean going craft – all at the push of a button.

DOUBLE BENEFIT FOR LIFEBOAT
The World’s FirsT
Mick Norman, who organises the fire-fighters championship, presents a £1,500 cheque to Cowes lifeboat crew member Andrea Vaughan. Credit: RNLI
COWES lifeboat station has benefitted from two very different recent fund-raising efforts, one involving staff of the Southampton based Ordnance Survey offices and another concerning the annual National Sailing Championships for firefighters. Ordnance Survey employees chose the RNLI as the beneficiary of its corporate charity events held over the past 12 months, ranging from running races to a Christmas fayre and a cake sale. Of the £7,734 raised it was envisaged that the RNLI’s Cowes, Calshot and Lymington stations should each receive £1,500, to pay for two crew members undergoing five days of training at the charity’s Poole headquarters. Ordnance Survey operations manager, Richard
O’Callaghan, lives on the Island and is one of the Cowes station’s volunteer helms. The Firemen’s Championships, meanwhile, involved eight-strong crews aboard yachts chartered from Port Solent, Portsmouth. This year over 20 yachts competed in the races, staged in central and eastern Solent. Cowes lifeboat was one of several good causes to receive £1,500 cheques at the closing gala dinner, held at Cowes Yacht Haven. The evening also included a raffle. Over the last ten years over £56,000 has been raised for a range of good causes by the Sailing Championships. As well as firemen, the event also attracts entrants from the police, ambulance and mountain rescue bodies across the country.

ANY frustration amongst competitors with the enforced delays at the start of the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s Harken May Regatta, the first in its popular Summer Series, was blown away by the sparkling racing served up on Sunday. Saturday’s sunny but light and fickle conditions saw a three hour postponement and, even later in the day, race officers were obliged to shorten course on a number of occasions. Day two, however, provided more sunshine and a steady racing breeze of around 15 knots that, for once, deserved the description of ‘champagne sailing’. There was hot competition among several classes, none more so than in the burgeoning J70 fleet which is looking ahead to July’s J-Cup, which the Royal Southern is hosting. Victory went to Just4Play, helmed by J70 fleet captain Simon Cavey. “We are just chuffed to bits,” he said. “The whole of the racing was fantastic - to have seven or eight J70s in the fleet is really, really good.” The tightest finish in the regatta came in IRC3 where Adam and Nick Munday’s Indulgence held off Annie Kelly’s Blackjack II, a single point separating the two J97s. Nigel Goodhew’s Sigma 38 OODPersephone took the final podium place. There was a similar situation in the XODs, with Hamish Calder’s Leading Wind just shading Peter Nicholson’s Sunshine, with Diana Wilson’s Mischief two points further back.
It was also a close run affair among the J109 fleet, with Mike Wallis’ Jahmali quick out of the blocks with three consecutive bullets followed by two second places. In IRC1 the striking looking GP42 Tokoloshe II looked to have a fight on its hands against its old adversary Anthony O’Leary, this weekend at the helm of the Kerr 40 Catapult which will form part of the Irish Commodore’s Cup team this year. Catapult won the first race by just 23 seconds on corrected time before Tokoloshe bounced back with two bullets in Sunday’s bigger breeze. The next instalment in the Royal Southern’s Summer Series is the ever-popular Mount Gay Rum June Regatta held over the weekend of 7-8 June.

South east triumphs RYA South east Zone reigned triumphant at Rutland Water as they were crowned 2014 RYA eric Twiname Champions. having endured testing conditions with strong squalls on Saturday, the concluding day of the Championships bought with it similar conditions for the 241 competitors at the event, with spells of sunshine, short showers but more manageable gusts of 20-25 knots. As a result the three dinghy classes completed three races while the four windsurfing classes managed two allowing the young sailors to get some scores on the board after a lack of racing on day one. In addition to the 2014 RYA eric Twiname title, the RYA South east Zone also won the eric Twiname
Dinghy Trophy, awarded to Zone with top overall dinghy, while the RYA South Zone got their hands on the eric Twiname Windsurfer Trophy, awarded to the Zone with top overall windsurfing score. Mark Nicholls, RYA Youth Racing Manager, commented: “I have been really impressed with the young sailors this weekend, their attitudes have been fantastic and the standard of racing across the seven junior classes has been excellent in some very tricky conditions. “A huge thanks must go to Rutland Sailing Club who have done an immense job over the two days of racing and of course to the eric Twiname Memorial Trust for supporting the regatta for the consecutive 28th year.” Full results at www.sailingresults.co.uk.

PODIUM DOUBLE FOR GBR FINNS straight Europeans podium finish for the Bournemouth sailor, who claimed silver at the same event last year. It was so nearly silver again for Wright, who needed just one more boat between him and the 2013 European Champion Vasilij Zbogar in Saturday’s ten-boat finale to make the higher step of the podium. But amid wet, windy and choppy conditions of 18-20 knots, Wright had to settle for sixth place in the medal race to Zbogar’s ninth to finish just one point behind the Slovenian on the leaderboard. The 36-year-old Wright said afterwards: “A medal is always good, so that’s why I’m happy, but now I have to get down to some real training and onto the Olympic test event.”

ED Wright made it a double podium celebration for Great Britain at the close of the Finn European Championship, claiming bronze on a breezy final day in La Rochelle. Wright’s medal came in addition to Giles Scott’s convincing event victory a day ahead of time on the penultimate day. Scott’s victory came on the first anniversary of British Olympian Andrew Simpson’s passing, and he admitted that his friend was in his thoughts, saying: “The Finn sailors and officials all gathered at 9am this morning and [jury chairman] John Doerr said some very nice, emotional words and we had a minute’s silence.” The bronze medal for Wright ensured a second

All At SeA JUNE 2014 HAYLInG Island celebrated of the work of Combined Operations Pilotage Parties on 21 May with a special event in which many hundreds attended, marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and the WWII COPP Unit’s contribution to the success of the normandy landings on 6 June 1944. There were speeches led by the Association president, Lord Richards of Herstmonceux, the former Chief of Defence Staff, wreath laying and the unveiling of a dedicated COPP seat by the Hon Timothy Knatchbull, the grandson of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Head of Combined Operations in WWll. The celebration was presented by Sally Taylor of BBC South Today, with TV historian Dan Snow delivering the keynote address. Dan commented on how honoured he felt, to be asked to give the background to the day’s events and the bravery of Hayling’s COPP Heroes. The events at Hayling Island come ahead of wider D-Day commemorations, being held in Portsmouth from 3-8 June, for which Southsea seafront will be the focus of activities. On 5 June, a parade on Southsea Common will be followed by an amphibious landing on Southsea beach by the Royal navy, and a Sunset Concert for Heroes. A remembrance service led by the Royal British Legion will be held the following day, whilst military vehicles and re-enactors will bring the wartime period to life on the seafront on 7-8 June.
D -Day celebrations West coast winners COLIn Jex from Arnside, Lancashire and James Rainsford from Dartmouth, Devon have been crowned the latest winners in the RYA ilovesailing Calendar competition, securing themselves a spot on the 2015 calendar. James’s entry was taken off Dartmouth, Devon, during a classic yacht race back in July 2009. James commented: “I was aboard the Royal Dart Yacht Club’s launch, assisting with marshalling of the event and captured this shot. The image also shows a row of coastguard cottages ashore.” Colin’s photo was taken last June and is of the occasional anchorage at ‘Eilach an naoimh’ in the Garvellochs, West Coast Scotland. Colin explained: “The Island is the site of a ruined monastery
founded in AD542 by St. Brendan, and later used by St. Columba for its peace and seclusion. There are also beehive cells and a ruined chapel on the island. It is a good temporary anchorage in settled weather as a waiting point for a transit of the Corryvreckan. The island on the horizon is Jura, with the famous Paps at the south end with their attendant cloud formation.” Once again the choice and standard of entries was fantastic and choosing just two from amongst the 33 submitted for April was tricky work for the judges. The ilovesailing calendar competition runs from March through to August 2013, with two photo winners being picked each month to appear on the 2015 calendar. www.facebook.com/ryailovesailing

stay safe afloat Which type to choose?
Crewsaver’s Design Manager, Nigel Parkes, highlights the key elements to consider when choosing the right lifejacket, ensuring you stay safe afloat. There are two main types of Personal Flotation Device, or PFDs, to consider; lifejackets and buoyancy aids. here we focus on lifejackets.
n 100N - Provides additional buoyancy to that of a buoyancy aid and will have a tendency to turn an unconscious person face up. Most commonly constructed using foam, making them inherently buoyant.
n 190N - Approved to 150N standards, these lifejackets provide more support than the standard 150N models, whilst maintaining minimal bulk. Suitable for inshore, coastal and offshore use.
290N lifejackets provide more buoyancy, again giving you that extra turning speed and MFB should you fall in. Suitable for inshore, coastal, offshore and ocean use.
n 275N - Offshore or extreme heavy weather lifejackets come with minimum of 275N of buoyancy; they will help ensure you turn over even if wearing multiple layers of clothing that trap air. Suitable for extreme weather inshore, coastal or offshore. n 290N - Approved to 275N standards and specifically designed with offshore and more extreme ocean use in mind.
Additional personal safety products can include position indicating lights, Personal Locator Beacons (AIS or personal ePIrBS). Spray hoods and crotch straps can also be fitted to improve safety and increase chance of rescue.
Buoyancy distriBution
Fundamental to a good lifejacket is buoyancy distribution; the buoyancy should be positioned to provide as much MFB as possible and be distributed sufficiently such that the product turns effectively and supports you at the right flotation angles.
When choosing a lifejacket, check that a good proportion of the buoyancy is positioned in the centre of the chest - ideally raised to increase the turning moment. The anchored-to points of the lifejacket should be as low on the rib cage as possible. Sufficient extra buoyancy should also be placed close to the body to ensure a nicely raised freeboard, including behind the head. Any buoyancy around the neck should not overly restrict movement or comfort – even if wearing many layers of clothing underneath. Ask your retailer for this information.
useless unless Worn
Ultimately products are ‘useless unless worn’ (www.rnli.org). As a manufacturer, by ensuring that PFDs are comfortable to wear we can hopefully ensure that the crew will wear them, which is the only way to ensure crew safety. www.crewsaver.com

Lifejackets provide support and performance regardless of the conditions. They come in three types - inherently buoyant (foam), inflatable, or a combination of the two. These three then come in different performance levels; examples are 100N, 150N, 190N, 275N and 290N. Choosing the right type of lifejacket and then the appropriate performance jacket within that type can be difficult. With the advent today of high performance clothing and layering systems it is important to understand the key attributes of your lifejacket. This includes what level they perform at, taking into account the type of activity you are doing, what you are wearing and how much mouth free board (MFB) they offer - the higher the mouth is from the surface of the water the longer the likely length of time for survival is.
n 150N - A standard performance level widely available. The majority of 150N lifejackets are inflatable and can be inflated automatically or manually. 150N lifejackets provide turning capabilities and increased MFB. There are also some 150N inherently buoyant products for children. Suitable for inshore, coastal and offshore use.

MINI MASTER CLASS PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
SAIL TRIM FOR CRUISERS WHEN we are out on the water enjoying our sailing we strive to sail the yacht efficiently. Many of us look at the yacht beside us and ‘tweak’ to try to keep up or even overtake, which will normally involve looking at the tell tales to determine that the sail is sheeted correctly. Once the principals of tell tales and over or under sheeting are understood there are other areas to look at that should make the yacht sail more efficiently, and help arrive at your next destination earlier. TOO MUCH TWIST Here, Vaughan Marsh, RYA Chief Instructor, Sail Cruising shares a few ideas for moving on to the next level of sail trim… Understanding the bigger picture by considering ‘twist’ and ‘camber’ will help you think in terms of the sail shape that you want - rather than simply learning a list of controls and actions. Twist Twist refers to the changing angle of the sail in relation to the wind as you move higher up the sail. The more the top of the sail is ‘sheeted out’ compared to the bottom of the sail, the more twist you have. To see this in action place the yacht on a reach, then adjust the kicker, as seen in the diagrams.
1
THE To understand this, sail upwind and monitor the effect on boat speed and pointing ability as you adjust the mainsheet and traveller to change the sail shape.
17
Masterclass To understand the position more effectively and see it moving forward, try tensioning the luff using the halyard or cunningham. As the diagram indicates, the optimum position is about 40 per cent along the sail.
2
GOOD NOMINAL SET
1. Light winds: traveller up, sheet and kicker eased for more twist 2. Stronger breeze: traveller down, sheet and kicker trimmed on to reduce twist
KICKER TOO TIGHT Because in most cruising boats the kicker will have limited effect on twist in stronger LEFT: Checking winds or thewhen belt tension going upwind, is correctly the next stephelps is toprevent move swiftly on to the adjusted future problems. effect of mainsheet and traveller position on twist.
Camber Camber can seem a little more complicated, particularly if an aerodynamicist tries to explain it, but we’ll simply say it is the curve of the sail. We are interested in two parameters: the draft, or fullness of the sail (how curved is it) where the maximum curve is (i.e. the maximum draft position) If we talk about reducing camber we mean less curve, or flattening the sail. If we talk about moving it forward, we are moving the maximum draft position closer to the luff of the sail. Easing the clew outhaul is the easiest way to see increasing the draft but the effect of this adjustment on the position of maximum draft is less obvious.
ABOVE: Clew outhaul tightened – draft decreased, sail flattened
ABOVE: Nominal halyard/cunningham tension – draft at 40% BELOW: Increased halyard/cunningham tension – draft moves forward
BELOW: Clew outhaul eased – draft will increase and move forward towards mast Think about sail shape whenever you are sailing, take the opportunity whenever possible to experiment. Monitor the effects of various controls on the boat’s performance, then you will begin to develop an idea of what shape you are looking for in certain wind strengths or sea states.

GREEN FOCUS JANE SWAN
A joint BMF and RYA initiative
The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms.
Images courtesy of MDL Marinas.
‘It’s the law’ EVERY time The Green Blue is asked what it does, we always reply with something along the lines of ‘sustainable boating’ and ‘self-regulation’. Fortunately most of the time the common sense argument of wanting to keep our sailing waters clean and healthy stands up to scrutiny but when an occasional dissenting voice speaks out, we sometimes have to resort to answering ‘because it’s the law!’ A key piece of environmental legislation which has taken prominence of late is the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Amended. The Act is the primary legislation in the UK that seeks to protect animals, plants and certain habitats, and this includes the wide range of species and habitats that boaters might encounter whether on a weekend cruise or a day’s racing. The upshot is that whether intentional or not, boaters can be prosecuted for disturbing protected wildlife and ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
POLICING POLLUTION
Most boaters will also be familiar with MARPOL, which stands for Marine Pollution. MARPOL is the International Maritime Organisation’s convention for the Prevention of Pollution of Ships 1973 and in the UK MARPOL is implemented by the MCA through the Merchant Shipping Regulations. The term ‘ship’ is defined as a vessel of any type whatsoever operating in the marine environment so UK flagged recreational boats can be affected.
MARPOL: what do leisure boats need to know? ANNEX 1 Prevention of pollution by oil prohibits the discharge of oil or oily mixture into the sea. ANNEX 4 Prevention of Pollution by Sewage deals with disposal of sewage, prohibited by vessels over 400gt or certified to carry more than 15 persons. Smaller recreational vessels can discharge sewage though best practice encourages boaters to use pump out facilities or only empty tanks when three miles offshore. ANNEX 5 Prevention of Pollution by Garbage deals with different types of rubbish and specifies the distances from land and the manner in which it may be disposed of; the most important feature of the Annex is the complete ban imposed on the dumping into the sea of all forms of plastic.
UNTANGLING THE FACTS
For marinas operators and boatyards, the legal landscape is more mind-boggling and Government cuts have meant that one stop environmental websites such as NetRegs in England no longer exist. The fact remains, however, that all companies are required to comply with current legislation and ignorance of the law is no excuse. Fortunately The Green Blue is at hand to make it all a little easier, with the launch of a new, free resource - ‘The Environmental Legal Register for Marinas’ developed with assistance from BMF

The register lists all the environmental legislation that might be relevant to a marina and allows the marina to check whether its site is compliant. Furthermore the resource will allow a marina to satisfy the requirements of an environmental management system such as ISO 14001, as well as industry specific schemes such as The Yacht Harbour Association Gold Anchor Scheme which requires the marina to demonstrate its legal compliance. If you berth with a marina that has a gold anchor rating, you will know that these areas have been assessed.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2013 – the year to beat?

Entertainment Schedule Friday n 1000 - 0000 n 1500 - 0030
the annual J.p. Morgan Asset Management round the island race, organised by the island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the isle of Wight. the race regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK. Competitors come from all over great Britain, from other parts of europe and from as far away as Australia and the USA to race the 50 nautical mile course around the isle of Wight. Starting on the famous royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, the fleet races westabout, to the needles, round St Catherine’s point and Bembridge ledge buoy, and back into the Solent to the finish line at Cowes.
the race provides a unique opportunity to watch worldrenowned sailors racing against families and first timers. For those not competing, the island and the south coast have many great vantage points to watch the race unfold, such as the Spinnaker tower in portsmouth, hurst Castle, and the needles. this year, the organisers are delighted to welcome the distinguished BBC broadcaster and presenter david dimbleby to fire the first gun at 0630 and then compete with his son on board a Volvochartered Farr 45. equally exciting is that Sir Ben Ainslie, who is already committed to compete on 21 June, has accepted an invitation to present the prizes at the iSC›s race prizegiving event at 12 noon on 22 June.

last year’s race will almost certainly be regarded as one of the best ever held since it was first run with 25 entries in 1931. on 1 June 2013, the weather was fabulous, the wind was just windy enough to produce exhilarating and competitive racing, there was a brilliant buzz throughout Cowes and in the regatta Village in Cowes Yacht haven. the memorable moments were numerous and more people than ever followed the ‘as live’ race progress on the website, through the live tracking and the Blog. the excitement was palpable right from the early morning gun, as the two race records - fastest rounding in a multihull (the course record) and fastest rounding Image: Patrick Eden

in a monohull, were being fought for as the rest of the UK was just waking up. the current monohull race record set by Mike Slade on the 100ft iCAp leopard on 1 June 2013 stands at 3.43.50. this is 9 minutes and 45 seconds inside iCAp leopard’s own race record set back in 2008. the multihull race record set on 1 June 2013 by Sir Ben Ainslie on Jp Morgan BAr, his AC45, stands at 2.52.15 beating by an impressive 16 minutes the previous multihull race record set by Francis Joyon in 2001 aboard dexia eure et loire of 3.08.29. Can anyone beat these superb record-setting achievements in 2014?

Behind the scenes
Peta talks to ISC Secretary, Lea Bennett, who heads up the team that helps behind the scenes Why does the Race always go to the West towards the Needles and has there ever been an exception to this? lB: the Race goes West as with so many vessels involved, we need to close the eastern Solent for the start sequence and when they all come back around Bembridge ledge they are not all in a bunch as they are for the starts. If we sent them east then there would be too many vessels bunched up in the eastern Solent where the main shipping channel is. Currently, the eastern Solent is closed to large ships during our start sequence. Who actually runs the Race? lB: the PRO (Principal Race Officer) is in charge of the race through its duration but there are many people involved in the planning and execution of each race.
Why is a there a time limit for completing the race? Surely it takes a crew as long as it takes. lB: It is normal in racing to set a time limit and with Round the Island Race that time limit is set with safety and visibility in mind. Obviously the finish line crew needs to be able to read the sail numbers of finishing vessels and so we close the line at a time when we feel visibility will be difficult thereafter. Does fundraising play a big part in the race? lB: A far cry from a race for the wealthy, the exhibition of world class sailors, mixed with the rare racers and family charters, the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race has become one of the biggest events on the yachting calendar and uses its status to continue its work with charities. the 2014 Race strapline is ‘A Race for All’, and simply by tweeting using the hashtag #raceforall, J.P. Morgan will donate £1 to the Official Race Charity, the ellen MacArthur Cancer trust, to a total of £4,000. the ellen MacArthur Cancer trust (www. ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org) has been the Official Race Charity since 2011 and so far the trust has raised over £130,000 with the help of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, enabling 260 young people to take part in life changing yacht trips. In 2011 a total of £90,600 was raised for charities,
with £82,000 being raised the year after that. During its sponsorship term, J.P. Morgan Asset Management has a target to raise £1,000,000 for charitable causes; with the current figure standing at £539,858. Is it simple to track a boat during the day? lB: In order for a vessel to be tracked someone on board needs to have downloaded the software and made sure that their battery is full on the day and their phone is on. Once that has been achieved the vessel can be tracked through the tracking viewer on the race website. the vessel’s track can also be replayed against other vessels after the race. Could you run the race without sponsorship? lB: the race could run without sponsorship but having a sponsor means that there can be entertainment in the CYH, there can be free water taxis, the Club can continue to introduce new innovations such as tracking that all add to the enjoyment of the crews and their families. How many people does it take to organise and run the race? lB: there are some 160+ people involved in running the race on the day. Spotters on the water, spotters around the Island, mobile radio teams on the south of the island, race teams on committee vessels and on the starts, race progress team, people to answer phones and those involved in the media.
Image: Paul Wyeth
Why do so many people enter the race? lB: It is a tremendous experience to race around the island with so many other sailors and an amazing adrenalin boost to complete the race. Speaking to people after the race they can be totally worn out but they are so full of the experience. Can I really race against famous sailors? lB: there are a number of different rating systems involved in the race but all those in the same rating system as Ben will be able to see how they have raced against him and all the others will feel an immense sense of pride to be on the same race course! Has the race ever been abandoned? lB: the race has not been abandoned but it was shortened many years ago. Can the organisers stop the race on the grounds of safety? lB: the organisers could stop the race on safety grounds. they can decide not to start the race should the weather conditions dictate. the official Race website is full of useful information and is your best resource for all the latest news and practical hints and tips, whether you’re competing or you are simply an armchair follower of one of the great sporting events of the summer. www.roundtheisland.org.uk Standard entry fees apply until midnight on 7 June: http://rtir.me/entries

Navigating danger
How charts have revolutionised sailing through the centuries
Modern chartplotters may be high tech, but they still rely on high quality charts for their accuracy. Courtesy of Raymarine.
In a recent edition of All at Sea, this column explored the creation of the Meteorological Office and how its work had done so much to reduce the death toll at sea during the great storms that sweep our coasts in winter. Working almost parallel to this was the creation by King George III in 1795 of a centralised office looking at the ‘difficulties and dangers to his Majesty’s fleet in the navigation of ships’. For over 200 years, charts had been a developmental concept, but had no established rules for scales, notation or correction. Coastal charts for our own shores often left much to be desired, as some hazards were noted but often misplaced, whilst others were assumed to be ‘local knowledge’ and ignored completely. However, shipping was rapidly becoming a global enterprise and as the need to trade and service the growing ‘colonies’ increased, so did the

requirement for quality charts for all locations around the world. George III had been well advised to act on this matter as, just 20 years earlier, Britain had been engaged in what was one of the first ‘world wars’. The American War of Independence pitted the UK against the French, Spanish, Dutch and the 13 American colonies that fought together as the United States. It was a measure of how, even in these
early days, war was becoming globalised in that various actions in the greater conflict at sea took place in locations spread as far apart as the Caribbean to the Bay of Bengal. As the influence and reach of the Royal navy grew, the flow of navigational information was two-way; more locations were being explored, and there was an ever greater need for charts of distant location.

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating.
CHARTING NEW WATERS For once, the oft-maligned George III got his choice spot on; for in choosing Alexander Dalrymple for the post of Admiralty Hydrographer, the task of rationalising and cataloguing the existing charts that were already held, was in safe hands. In just five years, the first Admiralty Chart appeared and though Dalyrmple would die in 1808, successive Admiralty Hydrographers went on to instigate bi-lateral agreements with foreign navies and then make the charts available for sale to commercial marine operations. However, the real growth in the Hydrographical Office came in 1829, when Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (he of the wind scale – though it is believed that much of the original thinking on this came from Dalrymple) was appointed Hydrographer. Many of Beaufort’s innovations are everyday items for the sailors of today; in
1833 he started the publication of Tidal Prediction Tables. Under Beaufort’s stewardship, the number of Admiralty Charts increased dramatically, yet Beaufort knew all too well that wrecks, rocks and moving sandbars required that charts be constantly updated. So, 180 years ago, in 1834, Beaufort set up the regular publication of ‘Notice to Mariners’, another aspect of sailing today that remains ever-present.

SONAR STEPS UP Even as Beaufort was retiring from his post in 1855, work was already being planned to lay the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cables. This highlighted the lack of detail in the current charts with regards to depth of water when offshore. The traditional method of measuring depth - dropping a weighted lead line over the side - was neither accurate nor practical, though coastal measurements were still being taken in this manner. Just as one war had seen the creation of the Hydrography Office, now another war would add the next major leap forward. In order to counter the threat of submarines, methods of bouncing a sound wave into the water then checking for an echo were developed. When angled downwards, this same technique could paint an accurate
Today’s standard charts have evolved from over 200 years of development.
picture of the seabed and when sidescan sonars were invented, full 3D models of the amazing topography of the seabed could at last be seen. Technology was now racing ahead, with new mapping techniques being developed from aerial photography. THE LATEST STEP - GPS Yet another military development was waiting with the advent of yet further conflict, this time the Cold War. Needing a degree of precision in navigational terms that was not yet achievable, the United States started deploying the Navstar (Navigation System using Timing And Ranging) which relied on a network of satellites. Originally intended purely for military
purposes, US President Ronald Reagan decreed that for the common good of all, that the GPS - Global Positioning System - should be freely available to all. At the same time, advances in miniaturisation and the growth in computing power saw the first digital chart plotters appearing. Now, thanks to developments that have shrunk the size and power consumption of devices using electronic charts, small devices are now available for not much more than a few hundred pounds that link GPS and depth sounder to a display that can be small enough to be hand held. Yet the base data that these devices rely on still comes from the UK Hydrographic Office, just as the paper charts have done for more than 200 years.

Fun on the water - how to get kids into sailing
ASK many youngsters about their favourite sailing activities, and aside from enjoying racing their friends and taking part in events, you will find that capsizing, water fights, pirate treasure hunts and sailing picnics feature high on their wish list! Children don’t tend to approach sports like grown-ups – they like to win or do well but their mission in life is also to be with their friends and have a laugh. When it comes to children and sailing, a vital point to remember is that they are not mini-adults. They don’t think or learn in the same way as grown-ups.
Alan Williams, author of the RYA Optimist Handbook, says: “It’s got to be fun, it’s got to be safe, and it’s got to be about them learning new things. “A secret to success is ensuring it is in ‘easily digestible chunks’. It’s about making step by step progress and improving confidence. What’s important is that they have realistic goals to achieve.” He adds that it’s essential not to make things too hard for children or they will lose interest. “The aim is to keep children motivated, confident, and of course, having fun.”
Inspiration for games and play - have fun while developing confidence and skills ing Whistles Game: Start off sail head to stle whi One d. win the across to stle up to close hauled, one whi y onto a tack, one whistle to bear awa whistle one e, gyb to stle run, one whi led. hau e clos to up d to hea And so on…. Do As I Say Game: Boats start off sailing across the wind. Coach shouts what to do next similar to whistles game but also includes: standing up; sitting down; finger on nose; do a pirouette; stand on one leg; and so on …
Blindfold Sailing: Use a windward leeward course in light winds. One sailor is blindfolded and the other sailor guides the blindfold sailor around the course. A great game to develop communication, trust and feel while sailing.
360-720 Game: Set up a simple course, such as windw ard/leeward, triangle or a diamond, and lead the sailors round the leewa rd mark to start the game. The first boat to the first mark has to do a 720 and scores 2 points and the second boat does a 360 and scores 1 point. The game keeps going until one boa t scores 7 points and is the winner . Then restart the game.

EVENT REVIEW
after their win, with William Taylor and Ben Hutton-Penman second. The Gold fleet race saw plenty of place changing; by the finish Piers and Freddie took the gun from Will and Matt Taylor. For the final day, the wind struggled to materialise, forcing the first two races to be abandoned. Eventually Arran Holman and Angus Kenp took the Gold fleet win from Piers and Freddie, whilst in Silver fleet, Drew Wright and Matt Beck took line honours. The wind built for the penultimate race when Harvey and Bobby won again, taking the title with a race to spare. With rain clouds gathering the wind swung, but a final race was sailed in 12 knots; Piers and Freddie took the gun whilst a second for JJ and Ben gave them second overall, tied on points with Will and Matt. SEKONDA RS FEVA CHAMPIONSHIP
TOP TIPS FOR KIDS, SAILING AND SMILES
■ Number one - it has to be fun! Concentration spans can be limited with small people – keep things short and varied ■ Have a pocket full of sweets for prizes and bribery as and when required! ■ Children run out of energy quickly and need fairly short sessions afloat, with regular chances to fuel up on drinks and food ■ Wear the right kit - nothing kills off the enthusiasm of a child quicker than being cold ■ Don’t be too complicated, and use pictures and diagrams - saves a thousand words! ■ Children like to do well – set achievable goals ■ Cruising? Have an aim, whether it’s a picnic, a stop at an ice cream shop, or a spot of fishing
Fickle winds for Feva Nationals
THE first day of the SEKONDA RS Feva National Championship, hosted by WPNSA, saw champagne sailing and top class racing. In a strong start, Harvey Martin and Bobby Hewitt led the fleet, scoring three firsts, in front of Steve Tylecote and son Ben, with JJ Hamett and Ben Todd third. The fleet then split into Gold and Silver for day two, but racing was postponed for two hours whilst the wind made up its mind. With the wind still flicking 20-30 degrees, the Silver fleet got away in a fickle five knots.
Gold fleet pushed the start and had a general recall, followed a postponement while the start line was tweaked. Finally they started just as Silver were finishing. Unfortunately another big windshift resulted in the Silver fleet back markers struggling to finish; as the mark layers for Gold fleet were kept busy. At the bottom of the first run the Race Officer abandoned the race and reset a new course, ready for the wind to settle. By the end of a long day, Ben Webb and Zoe James headed the Silver fleet

I had the great pleasure of naming a new boat this month, in the company of the Mayor of Havant and 40 other guests and supporters. The new pontoon boat is called ‘Rebecca Anne’ in memory of a lady with a learning disability who passed away last year. It was good to speak with her sister and father and to learn first-hand the joy that being on the water had given to their beloved Rebecca. Sailing Therapy C.I.C., which runs the Rebecca Anne, was created to provide facilities for people with learning disabilities to access the water for recreational and therapeutic sensory experiences. She is a 20ft Pontoon boat designed to give the maximum space for wheelchair users and powered by two 8hp outboard engines to give a designed top speed of 10 knots. Based at Northney Marina in Langstone Harbour, she is licensed by Portsmouth council to take clients in the natural harbours of Chichester, Langstone and

From visiting different Sailability groups he says that at least 50 per cent of the membership have learning disabilities and believes that this group of people derives the most benefit from being able to go afloat. The boat was named after a former client of David’s, Rebecca Stephens, who regrettably passed away just before the boat was launched. Her father, Mark Stephens, is a constant supporter of sailing therapy and director of the company. Mark Dombey is the other Director that has supported the building of Rebecca Anne. High-tech schooner A new European initiative to provide tall ship sailing opportunities for blind people has been launched in Poland. The Imago Maris Project has been formed with the main objective being to exchange experiences and integrate blind sailors from all over Europe. The first voyage takes place in October this year aboard the sailing ship Kapitan Borchardt, a 34m three-masted schooner. The voyage will be from Alicante to Barcelona via the Balearic Islands and cost €500 per person. Imago Maris says its voyages are designed to appeal to blind and partially sighted people who want to live a great adventure, sail around Europe, try their hand at the helm, take part in setting the sails or meet other adventurers who love the sea and are looking for experience. People with a visual impairment represent half the crew of the sailing ship. Sighted people who want to take part in a unique project and at the same time to explore the world of the blind are also welcome to apply.
Blind sailor Pawel Urbanski said: “I lost my sight within 24 hours when I was 13 years old… The Imago Maris project is like a port for a ship, it builds a sports-based
attitude. It allows you to sail away and to get back on dry land after a week of hard work and real adventure.” Imago Maris say what distinguishes them from other projects is that blind people are full members of the crew. So every person, regardless of whether the person is seeing, or blind, performs all tasks related to the operation of the ship.
The vessel is equipped to enable all crew members to perform their duties. The latest technologies on board will include a ‘talking GPS’ and ‘talking rudder deflection angle indicator’, which will allow the visually impaired to steer the ship. Braille sea charts will help them plot the ship’s position and get their bearings. www.imagomaris.eu Bringing like-minded people together.

Business woman and British Power Boat Champion Shelley Jory-Leigh, from Hampshire, is one of the UK’s leading powerboat racers and the top female in the world. In her spare time she runs a bridal business.

Highs and lows Ted Jelf with his sons before he sadly passed away.
THE 2014 Powerboat GP RYA Championship kicked off the season with the opening round held at Oulton Broad. It was an emotional start to the year for three times UIM F2 World Champion Colin Jelf who, after climbing to the top step of podium dedicated his weekend’s F2 victory to his late father Ted Jelf, a legend in the UK circuit racing scene, who sadly passed away recently. Colin was a class apart all weekend but he was the first to admit that getting to grips with running the new Optimax engine on the back of his 2004 Molgaard hull had taken him a lot
longer than he’d originally thought. “I had lost confidence at the end of last year when we first tried it out,” said Jelf. “The extra weight gave us a different challenge but I have enough talented people in my team to overcome such problems - after all, winning races these days is now more a team effort than it used to be.” RED FLAG DISPUTE Ben Jelf also had a difficult weekend when the officials had perhaps been a little too heavy handed in disqualifying Ben from heat one of the GT15 class. As the GT15 race got underway both Jelf and his closest rival
CHARLOTTE’S MAIDEN VOYAGE On a more positive note, the event saw Charlotte Newton take her maiden victory in national racing, competing in the GT30 class. She admitted that her win came as a shock as she thought the opposition would be too strong for her. “I didn’t know what to expect to be honest as we didn’t think we had the pace. I thought Jelf and Stoneman would have been quicker because we
Thomas Mantripp got past the pole sitter Jonathan Brewer before the first turn. As the pair approached the Wherry turn Jelf was adjudged to have dislodged one of the turn buoys. With the buoy floating away the race officials decided to bring out the red flag. As a consequence Jelf was deemed responsible for causing a red flag incident and was not allowed to re-start the heat. The Jelf Racing Team thought that both Ben and Thomas went between the buoys. “With just one buoy remaining in place all of the other competitors continued around that mark and it was only then that the officials brought out the red flag. If both buoys had been taken out and the race course effectively destroyed then following the rule Ben would be at fault,” said the team. “We spoke to the race officials involved and decided not to protest the decision; our results have always come from the water not the Jury room.”
watched them in practise and they seemed to have the speed. “We are now going to carry out some resting before Carr Mill [Lancashire Grand Prix] but you can test all you like, until you line up on the start line you really don’t know how you are going to perform.” Well done Charlotte – keep up the good work! www.powerboatgp.co.uk

The second British Motor Yacht Show took place under blue skies, as the very best of British motor yachts combined at Premier’s Swanwick Marina.
The new P1 race season in the UK is due to open , with Bournemouth being the first stop for the powerboat racers and jet ski riders. A fleet of 10 P1 Panther powerboats and more than 30 personal watercraft racers will take to the water close to its famous pier in the UK SuperStock and AquaX championships in the Bournemouth Grand Prix of the Sea.
RIB CHAMPIONS
A stunning collection of yachts from Fairline Southampton, Princess Motor Yacht Sales and Sunseeker Southampton basked in sunshine. In particular, a Sunseeker Portofino 40 in a Union Jack vinyl wrap standing at the entrance to the marina caught the attention of visitors. The 2014 show built on the success of the inaugural show, with luxury brands including Aston Martin, McLaren, Porsche and Range Rover complementing the yachts on display. Friday and Saturday evenings featured complimentary drinks and live music on the water’s edge.
Two teenagers have clinched their places in the very first Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship event of the season, held in Bangor Harbour, Northern Ireland. Matthew Crichton, (12) and Mark McDonough (16), will go head to head against the 13 other regional age-group champions at the national grand final at the Southampton Boat Show.

RYA HANGS UP VENTURE CUP HAT The RYA has informed the organisers of the Venture Offshore Cup Ltd and the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) that, as the appointed National Authority for this event, it is no longer in a position to approve or host this event and formally return the ‘World Cup’ title to the UIM.
In a statement, the RYA expressed disappointment and said that, as the National Authority responsible for this event, all of the required permissions, UIM/RYA Rules must be fully approved before the event can move forward; unfortunately, it has not been possible on this occasion.

MARINA FOCUS

SPOTLIGHT ON MARINAS AND HARBOURS
LYMINGTON YACHT HAVEN Lymington Yacht Haven Kings Saltern Road Lymington, Hampshire, SO41 3QD 01590 677071 www.yachthavens.com lymington@yachthavens.com
IN a stunning location, Lymington Yacht Haven has the enviable position of being the first marina that comes into sight as you make your way up the Lymington River from the Solent. But it’s not just the incredibly easy access and beautiful market town that tempts visitors and berth holders alike. THIS Five Gold Anchor marina, which is family owned and managed by Yacht Havens Group, has a distinctive culture – unmistakable from the moment you arrive. With marinas all over the UK, and Holland, you’d expect the 500 berth flagship site to tick all the boxes when it comes to facilities, and it certainly does, and then some. But what is surprising, is the exceptional personal service, personality and warm welcome offered to visitors and berth holders - qualities sometimes overlooked elsewhere.
It’s clear that Lymington Yacht Haven is in tune with the needs of boat users and has every aspect of your stay taken care of – from service and security to electricity and free WiFi. And of course, the much-loved Haven Bar, which has recently undergone a significant refurbishment. The Yacht Haven aims to set new standards in the marina industry with its £1.2m investment in all shoreside facilities, including the redevelopment and extension of the main marina building which completes this month.
DEVELOPMENT AND FACILITIES LYMINGTON was one of the first yacht marinas to be built in the UK, officially established in 1972, and since then, it has seen many developments and expansions. Far more than just a safe place to berth your boat, Lymington Yacht Haven has 500 fully serviced berths for yachts up to 25m (80ft) LOA. As if existing facilities weren’t impressive enough, the new luxury features promise to surpass all expectations. All new washrooms and laundry amenities are spread across the ground floor extension. The facilities have been designed with thoughtful touches such as beauty stations with hair dryers and straighteners, backlit mirrors and extra-large shower cubicles with under floor heating, heated towel rails and separate sinks in each shower room. Regulars will be pleased to discover that The Haven Bar may have received a stunning
makeover, but has retained its muchloved character, charm and comfortable atmosphere. The panorama from the extended balcony offers unrivalled views across the marina and out over the Solent. Enjoy a fantastic meal and drink with friends nestled next to the feature fireplace in the snug, or take advantage of the sun terrace with spectacular views across to the Isle of Wight; perfect for watching the sun set over the Solent. As part of an ongoing improvement programme, Lymington Yacht Haven plans to continue with bike and electric car hire, ideal for exploring the attractive New Forest surroundings. A huge variety of services are provided by on-site tenants, including marine engineers, marine electronics, yacht maintenance and repairs, rigging specialists, yacht charter companies, yacht brokerage and new boat sales.
EXPLORING ASHORE
JUST 10 minutes from the marina, Lymington is a picturesque Georgian market town offering a number of interesting independent shops, designer boutiques and galleries – as well as the lively Saturday morning market. There is also a tantalising choice of pubs and restaurants. You can explore the unique history of Lymington and the New Forest Coast with a regular programme of exhibitions at St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery. Or take a trip to the Beaulieu Motor Museum and the historic shipbuilding village at Bucklers Hard. A popular place to visit, especially on a hot summer day, is the outdoor Historic Roman Seawater Baths - built in
1833. It’s open daily to swimmers from May to September and just a short walk round the sea wall from the marina. The marina has direct access to the Coastal Footpath offering beautiful walks along the foreshore to Keyhaven and Hurst Point. And the surrounding area is a wonderful place to explore and enjoy the great outdoors with beautiful New Forest walks, cycling, horse riding and beaches that stretch from Milford on Sea to Sandbanks. Visitors to Lymington can also make the short trip to The Isle Of Wight and enjoy the many shops and restaurants, pubs and beaches. Other attractions on the island include Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle.

At Lymington, the marina directions are indicated on brown tourist signs, initially as ‘Marinas and Riverside’, and then as ‘Yacht Haven’. By exiting the M27 at junction 2, you can reach Lymington via Beaulieu, avoiding the potential bottleneck at Lyndhurst during the busy season. By train, there is a regular half hourly service from the main line station of Brockenhurst through to Lymington town. the marina is then a 15 minute walk from the station. SIR BEN’S AC45 SET TO STAR Star of the 60th London Boat Show will be America’s Cup winner, Sir Ben Ainslie, who will be bringing his J.P. Morgan BAR AC45 to the Show, which will be on display for visitors to see this iconic catamaran up close.
JUNE is the first month of the summer quarteryear and the month when the JP Morgan Round the Isle of Wight race kicks off the summer regatta scene afloat and ashore. Time then to consider summer wines... What makes a wine a summer wine? A practical benchmark is what goes with barbecues, cold crustaceans, salads and al fresco dining on the yacht club terrace. A descriptive benchmark is wines delivering summer soft fruit taste tones of strawberries, raspberries and plums, refreshing lighter wines suitable for serving and consuming chilled. Whites and rosés may spring to mind but there is a growing trend for selected red wines kept in the fridge and served from the table-top ice-bucket - quite commonplace in French sailing meccas, so why not here, too?

If you want to stay in the white sector, Muscadet is steadily coming back into favour. A year ago I struggled to find more than one Muscadet in the mainstream supermarkets but now there
is more choice and prices have fallen back to a reasonable £5 to £6 a bottle. Sainsbury’s now has its own ‘house’ Muscadet, a sure sign that sales are growing of this particular wine. Muscadet sur Lie is the version recommended to go with fish and Aldi has it at £5.99. Aldi also has Gavi Italian white. It’s full of fruit flavours plus lemon which gives it a sharp tang and makes it a good summer white, at 12 per cent and £5.29 a bottle.
SUMMER ROSÉS
Rosé may still be the popular classic summer choice. There are plenty in the stores and choosing can be a bit tricky. Avoid those that are just blends of red and white wine, often too sweet and low on flavour, and seek out those that are made to be rosé from the outset. Generally the paler it is the better the taste experience. Still at Aldi, I found a lovely pale and translucent pink classic Côtes de Provence Rosé at 12.5 per cent and £5.99 for a 75cl bottle. Enjoy the sunshine and summer drinks responsibly - and give the reds a chance!

the drinker for the juicy berry fruits taste tones of the wine. It is made from 100 per cent Gamay grapes and chilling really does benefit the flavour. A respectable 12.5 per cent abv, a 75 cl bottle costs £5.49. Frappato (M&S £7.99) is a Sicilian red. The back label exhorts us to ‘Do as the Sicilians do, serve chilled with grilled fish and summer salads or just on its own as a fruity apéritif’. The Chilean Cono Sur Bicicleta is a very reliable range of various whites and reds which have managed to gain distribution through several mainstream supermarkets. The Pinot Noir, bottled 2013, is light and fresh, more pink than ‘noir’ and with a rich taste of cherries, blackberries and plums. A great summer red which responds well to chilling.
