Huge support for unique Tall Ships flotilla FROM PAGE 1: the Falmouth Royal greenwich tall Ships Regatta 2014 has made maritime history as the first time ever that the internationally renowned tall Ships race has taken place solely in British waters. the start of this historic event in Falmouth, organised by Sail training international, saw Falmouth Bay packed with a send-off flotilla of thousands of local craft. Crowds of people lined the shore and key vantage points to admire the rare spectacle. over 100,000 people took to the water on boats and made the most of vantage points around the town for the magnificent Parade of Sail. more than 70,000 people visited the tall Ships Regatta site at Falmouth Docks during three days; early estimates put the economic impact of the event to the local area at £15m. John Hick, Chairman of Falmouth tall Ships Association, said: “this event has been like no other the town has ever seen – being even more spectacular than its 2008 predecessor. “Ships and the sea are such a huge and significant part

CONTENTS

of Falmouth’s, and indeed Cornwall’s, heritage and this year’s stunning event is a real honorary celebration of our proud history.” on leaving Falmouth, the fleet raced to St Catherine’s Point off the isle of Wight. the race was started by the Royal navy offshore patrol vessel, HmS Severn, whose commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Steven Banfield, is a veteran of tall ships racing. mike Bowles, Race Director, Sail training international, said: “the whole race start was fantastic for all taking part; there was just enough wind to see them on their way.” And, in the meantime, final preparations were being made to welcome the flotilla to its final stop on the thames - London’s first tall Ships event in 25 years. greenwich, Canary Wharf and Royal Woolwich Arsenal will all play host to the fleet over five days of celebrations and activities, both on and off the water, before a Parade of Sail concludes the unique event on 9 September. Some of the ships will be welcoming visitors to step aboard for free. more on page 21.

Ainslie approval for Portsmouth’s progress WoRK on Ben Ainslie Racing’s new headquarters at the Camber in Portsmouth is moving faster than one of the team’s foiling multi-hulls, as Sir Ben discovered when he went to visit. “it was fantastic to visit the Camber site and see the new base works progressing at great pace. the support of the community has been incredible and we are really excited to see our new home being built in Portsmouth,” said Sir Ben after his visit. the site has been levelled, site offices have been put in place, hoardings erected and the process of drilling piles is under way. it is hoped to begin the steel superstructure in early october. A team of steel fixers are on site building cages and cement lorries turnaround daily throughout the week. Work was briefly interrupted when a Second World War bomb was discovered. the unexploded ordinance team was close at hand and an officer is now on site full-time in case anything else is unearthed. in the meantime, the Royal yacht Squadron Racing has had its challenge for the 35th America’s Cup officially accepted by the defender, the golden gate yacht Club, San Francisco. RySR is the affiliate club of the Royal yacht Squadron and the challenging club

for Ben Ainslie Racing. the ggyC currently holds the America’s Cup and will be hosting the event in three years’ time. the location is yet to be confirmed, being either San Diego or Bermuda. Story from www.benainslieracing.com

Lymington town Sailing Club hosted its annual Bath Race at the Lymington Sea Water Baths. the sun was shining and 14 teams along with their transformed baths, took part in round robins which took them round one buoy and back again, to race for the title of Bath Race Champions 2014. the transformed baths even included one with a selfbailer on you’ve been tangoed! Spectators lined the poolside to cheer on their teams. it was the sleek design and paddle power of Alice and Henry Wood, the twigs, who eventually took the overall win and

were crowned Bath Race Champions 2014. it wasn’t all fair play, as the lifeguards tried very hard to capsize the RnLi on more than one occasion! “thank you to everyone who came along to make the Bath Race such a success. it was lovely to see so many people getting involved on the water and cheering on the shore. We have raised a substantial amount for the RnLi which is great,” commented John Bell, organiser of the Bath Race 2014. in second place was team Bottom Feeder, followed by Just a Bath and Forca 14.

Bumper season

From the adrenaline rush of racing at Aberdeen Asset management Cowes Week, to the staggering spectacle of the tall Ships regatta from beginning to end, last month was a whirlwind of all things boating, and we’re delighted to bring you a bumper issue. We’re also taking a look ahead this month to the on-water extravaganza that is the PSP Southampton Boat Show, with a special four-page guide. It certainly seems like there’s plenty of excitement in store this year, as organisers are pulling all the stops out to make the show more appealing to visitors and throw off any sceptics. Feature boats, live music and – best of all – more opportunity than ever before to get out on the water and try out new boats and new skills all sounds hugely promising… let’s just hope the sun reappears! this issue we also report on some inspirational people; from 17-

year old Natasha ‘miss Isle’ lambert conquering her Sea and Summit challenge, to Keith Burhans, a Paralympian who won the chance to sail on the Volvo 65, Abu Dhabi ocean racing. Despite losing both his legs in a boating accident, Keith still pursues the sport he loves. Geoff Holt reports on page 24. And it’s not just those overcoming adversity that can inspire, but those determined to try something new. Check out our In at the Deep end feature on page 36, where columnist Georgia Pitt goes back to basics to see how newcomers can get started in sailing. A special thanks to our readers for their letters this month. Whether you are a newcomer to sailing, or an old hand, we would love to hear about your boating experiences. I was interested to read about the celebrations in honour of David thomas, in your excellent publication. there is a small fleet of Impalas in Brixham, where we enjoy the racing. Some years ago, after the royal torbay YC annual race to Guernsey, we continued to north Brittany. one of our crew spent some of the time ‘sharing the pilotberth’ with his now-wife. many of your readers will know of this confined space, which also makes an excellent sea-berth with lee-cloths raised. And it has the great advantage of being just beneath the gunwhale, and so when occupant is almost as well placed as if hiking, but remains warm and dry. I have it on good authority that (in line with the good humoured speculation about the number of babies made on board a David thomas yacht) a conception resulted in this happy union. Your readers may be interested to learn that whilst Cowes was hosting two very different regattas – the Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup and the Charles Stanley Classics Week one of the largest yachts seen at Cowes for some time moored on the outer wall of Cowes Yacht Haven. At 46m, ‘Christopher’ was built by Pendennis Shipyard in 2011 and with naval architecture and exteriors by ron Holland, the vessel easily accommodates up to 12 guests in luxury and style. After a visit to Southampton ‘Christopher’ sailed into Cowes where she stayed for a day or two making a splendid backdrop to the other yachts taking part in the regattas. Suzanne Whitewood

cRowds numbering 90,000 gathered to watch Act 5 of the extreme sailing series as it came to the UK over the bank holiday weekend, as part of the cardiff Harbour Festival. cardiff Bay saved the best for last for the 11-boat extreme 40 fleet, where Alinghi, the wave, Muscat and J.P. Morgan BAR battled it out until the bitter end for the top positions, in one of the closest – and most exciting – three-horse fights seen in the series, which resulted in a three way collision and three consecutive penalties too boot in the final race. the wave, Muscat took advantage of the tussle to sail away with the win at Act 5 presented by Land Rover, homing in on Alinghi on the overall 2014 series leaderboard. that left Ben Ainslie and Morgan Larson in a straight shoot out for second, but the British skipper could not break the domination of switzerland’s Alinghi, with Larson snatching it from the grasps of J.P. Morgan BAR. despite just missing out on second place, Ainslie was satisfied with the final position. “it’s a big step forwards. sailing with Paul campbell-James was fantastic,

he has taught us a lot about these boats and Bleddyn (Mon) was a great addition. we are looking forward to sailing with Paul Goodison in istanbul.” two teams were recognised for their sportsmanship during the cardiff event. series Main Partner to the extreme sailing series™, Land Rover, awarded the ‘Above and Beyond’ Award to sir Ben Ainslie’s J.P. Morgan BAR team and oman sail’s shore crew. day two of racing saw sAP extreme sailing team career into the back of emirates team New Zealand, led by America’s cup skipper, dean Barker. oman sail’s chase boat immediately went alongside in his RiB to steer etNZ away from the rocks, whilst the shore crew on board the J.P. Morgan BAR RiB immediately went ashore to get their spare rudder, assembled it and helped to fit it on board the emirates team New Zealand extreme 40. they responded with a speed that meant the Kiwi team missed just two races and were able to get back on the racecourse. Act 6 istanbul takes place from the 11-14 september, and with news of a local team entry, it will be a packed startline of 12 teams.

MAritiMe celebrAtion for ipswich AssociAted British Ports helped celebrate as ipswich Haven Marina welcomed over 140 visiting yachts for the culmination of the town’s highly successful Maritime Festival. Visitors included a 40-strong fleet of old Gaffers – traditional sailing vessels with a particular style of ‘gaff rigging’, some of which date back to the 19th century. other highlights of the weekend included historic vessels on orwell Quay, a V39 wartime steamboat, as well as classic barges and the oldest RNLi lifeboat, the James stevens No.14. on saturday evening visitors were treated to a laser lightshow along the marina walls and on sunday night the weekend was rounded off with a spectacular firework display. Marina Manager Linda Pipe said: “the weekend was fantastic and we were delighted to be able to offer our support and help showcase not only what a wonderful tourist destination ipswich has become but how thriving the waterfront really is.”

Visitors to the Maritime Festival enjoy the best dressed vessels at ABP’s Ipswich Haven Marina.

A King Charles spaniel, which has become an internet phenomenon, has now achieved what must be the ultimate photographic opportunity: a chance to pose with crew members aboard Cowes RNLI’s inshore lifeboat. Owner of four year old Bertie, Steve Powell, explained that while he and his wife ‘Beans’ were sailing their 62ft yacht in the Mediterranean he began taking pictures of Bertie and putting them on the internet. “At first it was just meant for friends and family,” he recalled. “All of a sudden BuzzFeed and Instagram took it up and there were a lot of comments on Twitter.

“Then Bertie made the Good Morning America television programme, and the story has been gathering pace ever since, helped with more and more photos. When these are taken on our boat he is always wearing his yellow life jacket. he even has his own fan club, now over 2,000 strong.” ‘Beans’ said: “It’s all a bit of fun really, and Bertie has become quite a poser in front of the camera.” Steve’s links with Cowes lifeboat started through his involvement in the RS elite National Championships at the port two years ago, which raised £2,251 for the station. “If through Bertie we can further help the RNLI it is all to the good,” he added.

RBIR records smashed The 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race has defied hurricane Bertha to become a record breaking race. FThe 1800nm race around the United Kingdom saw five world records broken and a fantastic win in IRC Overall by Jens Kellinghusen’s Ker 51, Varuna. First to cross the finish line – and the only multihull competing – was Sidney Gavignet and the crew of Musandam-Oman Sail, a MOD70 Trimaran. They recorded an elapsed time of 3 days, 03 hours, 32 minutes, 36 seconds, breaking the time set in 2011 by the 140ft Banque Populaire 5 by over 16 minutes. The new Monohull Around Britain and Ireland World Record was established by Volvo Ocean 65 Azzam-Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, skippered by Ian Walker. Averaging a speed of 16.24 knots, they set

the new record at 4 days 13 hours 10 minutes and 28 seconds. Volvo Ocean 65 SCA, skippered by Sam Davies, smashed the previous world record for Women’s Monohull set by Aviva, an Open 60, in 2009, by 1 day, 14 hours, 30 minutes. Two further records were broken by Class 40 Swish (monohulls 40ft and less), and byArtemisTeam endeavour, skippered by Brian Thompson (monohulls 60ft and less). Three teams from Ireland, Britain and Germany completed the course double-handed this year, the first time that this has been achieved in this event. Race sponsors Sevenstar Yacht Transport awarded Jens Kellinghusen with a $20,000 voucher to ship Varuna to their selected destination worldwide. Full results at roundbritainandireland. rorc.org

BRITISh sailors came away with two silver medals and the maximum three qualifying berths for the 2016 Paralympic Games at the conclusion of the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships in halifax, Canada. Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell missed out on a sixth consecutive world title by the narrowest of margins in the two-person SKUD class, while helena Lucas claimed silver in the 2.4mR class, just one point from overall winner heiko Kroeger of Germany. Their podium finishes, plus a fourth place by the British Sonar trio of John Robertson, hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas, ensured that Great Britain earned qualification across the three Paralympic classes for the Rio 2016 Games at the first time of asking. Defending SKUD World Champions Rickham and Birrell finished their regatta tied on points with the Australian Paralympic Champions Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch, but lost on countback after the 11-race series. Although Rickham admits that she and Birrell were disappointed to have not extended their World Championship winning streak, the epsom sailor says that they have learned some vital lessons in their quest to upgrade their Paralympic bronze medal to a gold one in two years’ time: “We already have five world titles – the only one that we really care about now is Rio, and this is all part of the learning towards that.” www. ifdsworlds2014.ca

BOSSES ALOFT IN COWES WEEK FUNDRAISING FRENZY Images Rick Tomlinson

The World’s FirsT

2014 was the first year for Cowes-based youth charity, UKSA, as the official charity of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. UKSA set a fundraising target of £35,000 – enough to give every Year 6 child on the Isle of Wight a sailing session – and came up with some unique fundraising activities. UKSA sent 15 ‘bosses’ up the mast, hoisting them 100ft up on their 65ft Farr yacht in a fundraising spectacle. ‘Bosses’ included Nick Gill of Gill Marine, and Burr Taylor, of Sturge Taylor, leaders in luxury yacht insurance. Several celebrity skippers helped the charity reach the national press. The charity’s Royal Patron HRH The Princess Royal raced her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence on UKSA’s identical Farr 65s. Pippa Middleton joined UKSA’s young ambassadors for some sailing, accompanied by double Olympic goldmedallist Shirley Robertson.

Also making appearances were UKSA’s ambassador, Paralympic gold-medal sailor Helena Lucas, as well as Olympic silver medal pentathlete Heather Fell, Olympic bronze medallist hockey player Alex Danson, and Bestival curator and wellknown DJ, Rob Da Bank. In addition, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh met UKSA’s young ambassadors during his visit to the regatta. The charity took around 450 people out on keelboats during the week to ‘Try Sailing’ and ran huge gutters full of water for regatta visitors to try miniature ‘gutterboat’ racing. Title sponsor, Aberdeen Asset Management, provided support by facilitating the design of an official charity T-shirt by fashion icon Amanda Wakeley (funded by the event’s family of sponsors) as well as by donating £2 each time a boat passed the Aberdeen Alpha mark. BOOT VS BOAT

THIS two part-event includes a race between sailors and a race between the sailors and a group of walkers/runners. A London to Brighton race like no other, the first team to reach the finish line in Brighton was declared the winner. This year, it was the walkers/runners who took victory; the first runners arriving in Brighton some 2½ hours before the boats. The sailors covered between 120 and 180 miles by sea and the walkers/ runners travelled around 60 miles overland. The BOOT vs BOAT event is now in its second year and for 2014, Sail 4 Cancer introduced an extra

part to the event. Two Sunsail First 40s with 14 crew members aboard first raced from Dover to London to position the boats ready for the second leg of the race. Racing through the night, a mix of experienced and novice sailors, including staff from Sunsail’s parent company TUI, were on board the boats, arriving to a warm welcome at St Katharine’s Dock after crossing the finish line at Tower Bridge. After a short stopover at the iconic marina, the two boats departed for the second and final leg of BOOT vs BOAT. Starting from Tower Bridge, the sailors and a team of walkers/runners then competed against each other to finish the race course first.

As the clock ticks down until the Guinness World Record attempt for the Largest sailing Race on 21 september, Bart’s Bash organisers have urged would-be participants to finalise their entry details. More than 620 clubs from 50 countries have already registered on line, with up to 20,000 participants expected worldwide. Although sailors will be able to sign up on the day at registered Bart’s Bash clubs that have capacity, to help those clubs in their last minute preparations, organisers are encouraging individual participants to ensure they register via the website before entry closes on 19 september. Advice is also being made available to clubs on how to measure their course if GPs is not available, how to fill out the Guinness World Record statements, and how to submit their race results to the live leader-board on the day. Clubs that fall short of the 25-boat entry required for the Guinness World Record attempt are still encouraged to take part and submit their results online. since its launch, sailing stars and Olympic champions across the world have endorsed the

event, which organisers hope will inspire new young sailors and encourage participation in the sport. Most recently, UK Minister for sport, Helen Grant, added her support by endorsing the event. Organisers are also offering advice for making the most of the event as a fund raising opportunity to support Andrew ‘Bart’ simpson’s legacy through the work of the Andrew simpson sailing Foundation; sailors can either set up their own JustGiving page, or donate directly to AssF. At a local and national level, the funds will be used to offer subsidised sailing and coach training opportunities initially at the Andrew simpson sailing Centre, and later nationwide - and to fund the Ambassador programme, designed to inspire school children through the visit of Olympic ambassadors. The Foundation is also working internationally. “We invite everybody, sailors and non-sailors, to join us on 21 september in this unique chance to become world record holders.” said Foundation Trustee Iain Percy OBE. Garmin Gears up for winter Action from Garmin Hamble Winter Series. Image: Paul Wyeth/www.pwpictures.com

OLyMPIC sailing manager stephen Park has hailed his team’s ‘substantial progress’ since the 2012 Games, as British sailors rounded off the first Rio Olympic Test Event with eight medals across seven Olympic classes. “It’s been a fantastic end to the first Rio Test Event,” Park explained. “Winning eight medals in seven events of the ten that we compete in has been very pleasing. It’s certainly a work in progress and of course we’d like to win more gold medals than we’ve won this week. But we were in there competing for gold medals certainly in four of the events and to be racing out for the podium in every single one of the ten events is a fantastic place to be.” Giles scott (Finn) headed up the team’s tally winning the only gold medal. silver medals went to Alison young – back from a 10-month break due to injury in the Laser Radial, and to the 470 pairings of Luke Patience-Elliot Willis and Hannah Mills-saskia Clark. Meanwhile, Ed Wright (Finn) walked away with bronze, as did Pippa Wilson-John Gimson (nacra 17), Dylan Fletcher-Alain sign (49er) and nick Thompson (Laser). nick Thompson’s hopes of Laser gold were dashed when he was injured following a collision with another boat, leaving him unable to compete in the final medal race. The European bronze medallist took great confidence from his performance prior to his injury, and sees the race series that he put together at this venue as a huge confidence boost on the road to 2016. “The biggest thing for me was that I was able to sail so well here,” said Thompson. There was drama following the 470 men’s medal race, in which Luke Patience and Elliot Willis did enough to secure the silver medal. But they were later protested for allegedly receiving outside assistance from their coach prior to the race start – a claim which was subsequently thrown out. “It’s a great feeling,” said Patience of their podium performance at the 2016 venue. “We’re here two years out, we’re on the podium having teamed up five months ago – that’s a nice place to be. “We were the only boat going into the medal race that was able to take the win from the Aussies mathematically, so that’s also a good thing.”

across two weekends and the Hamble Big Boat Championships, a 12-race grand prix event across two weekends for Farr 45s and J/111s racing one design and IRC boats above 1.040 TCF. For the first time in 2014, the mid series break weekend of 1-2 november has been designated as a spare weekend. Trevor Pountain, Commodore, HRsC, explains: “Last year, some appalling weather conditions meant we couldn’t race over one of the Hamble One Design Championship weekends. This was the first time we had lost two consecutive days racing, so by having a ‘spare weekend’ in the 2014 series, we give ourselves the option of re-scheduling racing if the weather conspires against us.” Early entry discount for the Hamble Winter series closes on 19 september. www.hamblewinterseries.com

COWEs lifeboat was called out to a unique incident after a yacht ran aground on a new man-made shingle bank at the entrance to Cowes Harbour. The shingle, which had only been disgorged from a large ship over the weekend, was part of the preliminary work for a new protective breakwater. The small yacht, Lullaby, with one man aboard, had come to grief on it around 9pm when it was on its way from the solent to a mooring up the River Medina. After the lifeboat crew deployed a steadying anchor for the yacht the man was taken ashore to await the next high tide. He apparently managed to return to the yacht in a dinghy in the early hours of the morning and continue up the river. Meanwhile, people on The Parade at Cowes were treated to the unusual sight of a man walking on the bank at the next low tide later in the morning. someone also planted a flag.

No wind and no rain as the sun rose over Egypt Point on the Isle of Wight on the day before the storm depleted the fireworks finale to Cowes Week and ex hurricane Bertha shook the country. Motoring slowly East from Yarmouth it was a matter of following the yellow brick road reflecting the early morning rays on the still water in calm dawn air.

Miss Isle: Mission accomplished DisABLED sailing teen natasha ‘Miss isle’ Lambert successfully scaled the 2,907ft Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons to complete her phenomenal sea and summit Challenge, then modestly summed up her achievement as “not bad”! Almost exactly one month after leaving her hometown of Cowes, isle of Wight, the 17-year-old, who has severe cerebral palsy, achieved her aim of sailing 440 miles around England’s south West coast to Wales before swapping her boat for a special Hart Walker walking aid to climb Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain. Just like her heroine, Dame Ellen MacArthur, after her epic round the world sail, the 17-year-old, who controls her boat only by breathing through a straw in a specially-engineered bicycle helmet designed by her dad Gary, was reluctant to leave her 21ft yacht, ‘Miss isle too’, as she arrived into her final destination of swansea Marina with a huge smile on her face. During the sailing part of her challenge natasha faced conditions that would have tested even the most experienced sailors, including a rounding of Land’s End. Exmouth, Dartmouth salcombe, Plymouth, Fowey, Falmouth, newlyn and Padstow all played host to the Miss isle support team. the last stop was in Bideford from where she set off on the final stage of the 12-leg sailing challenge across the Bristol Channel to swansea. Wherever the team travelled around the West Country, they were welcomed ashore by rnLi volunteers, sailors from numerous sailability groups not to mention the hundreds of well-wishers who had simply heard about natasha’s quest and wanted to offer their support and encouragement.

Global logistics specialist, offered to safely transport Miss isle and her 8m support riB from the marina in swansea back to southampton free of charge. sailing has been natasha’s big love since she went on holiday with the Calvert trust aged nine. she then started sailing at home and spent two years sailing with the Even Keel Project and her local rYA sailability. through the sea and summit challenge natasha is raising money for the rnLi, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer trust and the rYA Foundation, as well as the profile of sailing for people with disabilities. she has a target of £15,000. EntriEs are now open for the unique Governor’s Cup Yacht race from False Bay Yacht Club near the historic simon’s town, south Africa to Jamestown, st Helena island – one of the world’s best kept secrets. this exhilarating 1,700 nautical mile downwind race to one of the most extraordinary places on earth starts on 27 December and is the last time it will take place in its current format, making it a ‘once in a lifetime’ race. Every two years since 1996, intrepid sailors looking for a one-of-a-kind racing experience, have taken part in the Governor’s Cup Yacht race, which after an 8 to 14-day handicap chase across the south Atlantic, culminates in an activity-filled stay on st Helena – an island currently only accessible by private yacht or on one of the last operating royal Mail ships, the rMs st Helena. Following their stay on st Helena, supporters, family and crews enjoy a relaxing cruise back to Cape town on board the rMs st Helena offering an abundance of fun-filled activities and post race parties. 2014 sees the last time the race will take place in this format with the opening of a new airport on st Helena due in February 2016 and the subsequent decommission of the rMs st Helena. st Helena is a volcanic island in the south Atlantic, 1,800 miles from south America and 1,200 miles from south Africa. the island has over 500 years of rich history, with its most famous inhabitant being napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled to the island in 1815 and remained there until his death in 1821. the 10m-long island is also famed for its beauty as a sub-tropical island with a unique bio-diversity, which includes the world’s oldest land animal, Jonathan, a rare seychelles Giant tortoise estimated to be over 175 years old. the closing date for entries to the race is 31 October: www.governorscup2014.com

Valour, loss and sacrifice A thought-provoking exhibition is receiving thousands of visitors every week. Valour, Loss & sacrifice: Chatham, the royal navy and the War at sea commemorates the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and reveals the remarkable role played by Chatham Dockyard, its workers and the Chatham Division of the royal navy. Alex Patterson, Collections and Galleries Manager at the Historic Dockyard Chatham said: “As we draw

nearer the centenary of one of the largest losses of life at the beginning of the First World War, we should turn our thoughts to naval Warfare. “three royal navy Cruisers - HMs Aboukir, HMs Hogue and HMs Cressy were sunk by enemy submarine action on 22 september 1914 with a total loss of life of 1,459 men – these ships were manned with reservists. the exhibition shows brilliantly how technologies were quickly developed to fight against a

new type of warfare challenging a navy that had not been seriously threatened in home waters since the end of the napoleonic Wars.” Four long years of valour, loss and sacrifice are depicted using first-hand accounts, personal effects and poignant items including paintings, pictures and poetry. Valour, Loss & sacrifice: Chatham, the royal navy and the War at sea is showing in no. 1 smithery: the Gallery at the Historic Dockyard Chatham until 30 november and is included in the normal dockyard annual admission ticket.

NEWS IN BRIEF PLYMOUTH SINKING

Both RNLI Plymouth lifeboats launched to reports of an 11m sailing yacht with three persons on board sinking. While attempting to enter the Sound in the dark, it struck the eastern end of the breakwater. Once the volunteer crew brought the ingress of water under control it was decided to immediately tow the vessel to shore.

LIFERAFTS ON TARGET

The UK’s largest independent safety supplier, Ocean Safety, has reached its second milestone in the delivery schedule for replacing every liferaft in the RNLI’s all weather fleet, with the completion of the 200th liferaft in a consignment which eventually will total 300.

HUGO BOSS SET TO FLY

LASER sailor Chris Russell was forced to abandon a world record attempt for ‘the longest single handed, non-stop distance sailed, unassisted in a dinghy’. Chris set out to break the overall existing World Record, held by female sailor Tania Callas at 282nm, by sailing 300nm from Colwyn Bay to Dublin and back, but extreme wind and waves resulted in an initial change of course. Eventually it was deemed too dangerous for Chris to stay on the water any longer. Having spent more than 16 hours on the water and sailed over 100nm, Chris has still set a new world record for ‘the longest single handed, non-stop distance sailed by a male, unassisted in a dinghy’, which is now awaiting verification from Guinness.

Advances in design technology and the IMOCA 60 open design rule, the boat is likely to feature foils not dissimilar to those featured on the latest America’s Cup boats. The €3million build has been made possible thanks to support from sponsors and financial backers. The team has chosen Guillaume Verdier and the VPLP Team to design the new Hugo Boss, and is currently in negotiations with Hythe based Green Marine to complete the build. The boat will be launched in summer 2015, with the objective to be race ready to compete in the Transat Jacques Vabre in late October 2015. In the meantime, Alex Thomson is preparing to take on the Barcelona World Race, the double-handed, non-stop, round the world race, on 31 December together with co-skipper Pepe Ribes.

HRH COMMEMORATES This was Chris’ first ever World Record attempt; he aims to try for the overall record again within the next six months. His attempt began in conditions described as ‘near-perfect’. He was closely monitored by a land-based crew, and followed by a support team and an independent adjudicator on board a RIB. Sponsors, Helly Hansen, North Wales Honda and GU nutrition, were also on hand in support. On return to shore, Chris said: “I’m exhausted, but extremely satisfied with the performance myself and everyone else in the team put in over the last 30 hours.” The 32-year old sailor competes for Ireland in the Laser class and is currently working towards qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

ParalymPian and television presenter ade adepitan boarded a tall ship to break the news to crew members that they had been named the UK’s Best Sport project in this year’s national lottery awards. The Jubilee Sailing Trust brings together men and women of all physical abilities, through the adventure and challenge of sailing aboard two tall ships, lord nelson and Tenacious. Since the charity was established in 1978 over 38,000 people have sailed with them. Out of these, 19,000 people were disabled and 5,000 were wheelchair users. The charity received 5,790 votes – almost double the number of their closest rivals – to win Best Sport Project in this year’s national lottery awards, which is the annual search to find the nation’s favourite lotteryfunded projects. ade adepitan joined the crew of Tenacious returning from racing in the Tall Ships race in Europe: “This project is a blueprint for how we should run the country. it’s about equality, no one feels left out, there’s a job for everyone, all working together. “it was an amazing reaction when i presented the crew with the trophy, winning this award means such a lot to everyone involved. it will give them extra recognition, open more doors and get more people knowing about their wonderful work.” Darren naggs from the Jubilee Sailing Trust said: “it is a fantastic reward for everyone involved with the Jubilee Sailing Trust to win this prestigious award.” The achievements of The Jubilee Sailing Trust will be celebrated at a special star-studded ceremony broadcast on BBC One on 19 September. The charity will also receive a £2,000 cash prize to spend on its project as well as a coveted national lottery awards trophy.

a couple who were diagnosed with cancer have completed an epic 2,000 mile journey around the British mainland to raise £4000 for The Urology Foundation. alan Sinfield and his wife Geraldine sailed their 34ft Bavaria, Tante Helena, in a threemonth long challenge, made all the more heroic as alan was diagnosed with prostate cancer and testicular cancer just last year. Earlier this year, Geraldine was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Their diagnoses were all the more upsetting as both had also lost their spouses to the disease. The couple, from Polebrook, set sail from Shotley marina, near ipswich, on 3 June. They

stopped at more than 40 destinations for supplies in a feat of endurance they had never experienced before. alan, 71, said: “it has been a tremendous experience – exhilarating, difficult, challenging and exciting. “This trip tested my navigation skills to their limit. it has been amazing really, but sad too as Geraldine has not been well and was unable to accompany me for as much of the journey as we had hoped.’’ Highlights included a 100 mile overnight trip to the Humber where the boat was greeted by hundreds of curious seals, and a stopover in inverness where the yacht attracted the attention of twelve dolphins.

TWEED CHALLENGE

OFFSHORE sailing brand, Musto, invited its ambassador, England rugby player, James Haskell aboard the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team’s boat at Cowes Week to take part in a sailing kit test with a twist – a specially formulated ‘Country Takeover’. Challenging the pre-conception that tweeds should be strictly bound to field and country pursuits, James and the ADOR team were kitted out in MUSTO’s high-performance shooting apparel to see if the brand’s country clothing could stand up to the test of a two hour sail.

James Haskell said: “As an avid shooter, I have been wearing MUSTO tweeds for a number of years but wasn’t sure if they would be able to make it through the conditions on deck. “It was a bit of a challenge to convince the sailors that tweed would be cut out for a testing ride on a Volvo Ocean 65, but we were kept warm and dry – plus it was great to get off the land and get my sea legs tested for the day. It was a great challenge and fantastic to see the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team in action ahead of the Volvo Ocean Race.” All at Sea_SEPT.indd 1

SAILING THEN AND NOW

Sailing weeks: The ‘family formula’

As class championship numbers show a downward trend, is it time for something different?

ALTHOUGH we have become hardened to what normally passes for a ‘British Summer’, there is little doubt that the expectation is for long, hot sunny days and super sailing breezes (clearly early August this year is proving again that we can have rain and a gale of wind anytime!). Little wonder then that with the children off school, the core summer months of July and August see the bulk of the dinghy class championship sailing taking place around our shores. Yet over the last 25 years or so, there has been a worrying decline in attendance at these events. Everyone has their own explanation for this reduction in support - from the fragmentation in the sport caused by the increased number of new classes, to the cost of doing a main class championship week - but one common theme seems to be that the enjoyment factor can perhaps be lacking. THEN AND NOW Back in the 1970s, one of the most popular venues for a championship event was the stretch of golden sands that fringe the southern side of the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. At the sailing clubs at Pwllheli and Abersoch, fleets of more than 100 boats were a commonplace occurrence and whilst fleets of 200 and more may have been newsworthy, they were far from exceptional. Today, for most classes and clubs, these glory days are a mere reminder

This idea of a family-centric sailing week is far from new, with the Federation Week event in Chichester Harbour celebrating its 51st year in 2014… of ‘healthier’ days gone-by, as sailors vote with their feet (or more specifically, wetsuit boots!) and desert the high profile class championship events. Yet even as class championship numbers decline, the sport is seeing an ever increasing interest in a new format of summer sailing, the ‘sailing week’.

In our time-strapped lives, it makes a lot of sense to marry together the family holiday with some enjoyable sailing. During the difficult years of recession, there was a considerable rise in the ‘stay-cation’, where instead of the family heading off abroad, they took their holiday in the UK. Now, for the

If the ingredients are right, both sides can have an enjoyable break away. This idea of a family-centric sailing week is far from new, with the Federation Week event in Chichester Harbour celebrating its 51st year in 2014 with a bumper entry of over 300 boats. This shows that combining the relative ease of a holiday ‘at home’ with a week of competitive sailing can result in a win-win situation for all. Family Fun There are of course a few extra conditions than clearly have to apply for this to work, such as the location having easy access to a child-friendly, sandy beach, and plentiful things to do for the non-sailing members of the family. Sailing week organisers who have worked to ensure a happy balance between good quality competition and the all too often missing ingredient of enjoying ‘fun afloat’ are now seeing a healthy increase in demand for this sort of regatta. Another key factor in the success of the family week is to limit the time spent afloat. Unlike the class championship event, when

Locations as diverse as the Scottish lochs, Gurnard on the Isle of Wight, Pyfleet up on the East Coast and the ‘insurance4dinghies’ regatta at Bassenthwaite in the Lake District, also enjoy popular weeks... competitors are often out racing all day, the ‘sailing weeks’ limit this to a half day, allowing plenty of quality time to be spent with the family. Little wonder then that the sailing week has become such a notable growth area. Recent core-class sailing events during the early summer may have had disappointingly low turn outs, but in contrast, this year’s Crewsaver Abersoch Week, like Chichester, attracted a record entry. The sailing weeks offer so much, not least the opportunity for a sailor to have fun sailing with their partner or family in an atmosphere of a relaxed and enjoyable regatta. Abersoch and Chichester are not alone in seeing year on year growth for their family weeks. Rock, down on the Camel Estuary in Cornwall is another big favourite, whilst other locations, as

diverse as the Scottish lochs, Gurnard on the Isle of Wight, Pyfleet up on the East Coast and the ‘insurance4dinghies’ regatta at Bassenthwaite in the Lake District, also enjoy popular weeks. Sun, Sailing - and Fun! There is little doubt now that the sailing week is a trend that will only continue to grow, both in the choices of venue and in the number of boats that will forsake the traditional events in favour of doing ‘something different’. Falmouth, for so many years another of the premier Championship venues, has pro-actively responded to the decline in conventional events by promoting what it calls the ‘south west’s newest sailing event’, with a Gul-sponsored family week hosted by Restonguet Sailing Club. With so many people already holidaying in Cornwall, what could be better than to provide them with the bonus of a week of wonderful sailing? Andy Teague, Event Organiser at Abersoch, sums up perfectly why this change is taking place. “Sun, sea, sailing and a whole host of family fun” is how he describes the offering from the South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club. If the latest rumblings from the Met Office, that our summer is all but over are true, now is the time to be thinking of planning that all inclusive holiday for 2015! Sun, sand and sailing (not to mention the fun), all set in a stunning location - what is there not to like about the idea?

What makes a Tall Ship?

Tall Ships spectacle FINE weather encouraged an estimated crowd of 100,000 to watch a flotilla of a thousand vessels accompany more than 50 entrants in the Tall Ships Regatta as they set off from Falmouth in Cornwall. Clive Reffell of Greenwich Yacht Club made the long journey west for the start of the event… The largest ship in the fleet, the 120m Polish ‘Dar Mlodziezy’ led a Parade of Sail out of Falmouth Harbour and headed west to the delight of thousands of spectators on the Pendennis headland and past the nearby beaches down to Swanpool. Then they sailed to their race start lines four miles offshore. This was the start of the only Tall Ships event to both start and finish in British waters. An international fleet of 44 ships and yachts entered in four classes to race to the Isle of Wight, and then ‘sail in company’ to Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London. At least 50 per cent of the crew on each ship are ‘trainees’ aged 15-25. Some already sail, many don’t. For all of them – numbering some 830 young people in total - it is likely to be a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. Before setting sail, many of the tall ships moored at Falmouth to allow three days of public viewing. 150 local volunteers and 90 liaison officers appointed to each ship ensured help was on hand for visitors to get maximum enjoyment. In Falmouth town centre, street closures helped create a carnival atmosphere. Ships and yachts were decorated with flags and bunting. Music came from outdoor stages and through pub windows. There were quayside bars and food stalls and a fun fair. Shanty singers mingled with the crowds and all manner of traditional Cornish produce was on sale.

The local Royal Cornwall Yacht Club held its own three races on Saturday afternoon in Falmouth Harbour with a gala dinner at their clubhouse in the evening. Rear Commodore of Greenwich Yacht Club, Steve Wilson, was sailing on Tecla, originally a Dutch herring boat built in 1915. He said: “Everyone aboard was really impressed with the Saturday night fireworks that encouraged the crowds to stay late in town.” The fleet is due to arrive in London 4-5 September, mooring up at points along the Thames for further public viewing. Greenwich and Woolwich will have their own long-weekend Tall Ships Regatta festivals on September 5-7. We’ll see if Londoners support the event as much as or more than the Cornish!

London set for biggest Thames festival

After leaving Falmouth, the fleet raced to the Isle of Wight. Tomidi (Belgium) was the first to cross the finish line off the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, making the best of the downwind conditions to finish in 15 hours, 53 minutes. From the race finish, the magnificent vessels are due to make their way, cruising in company, along the coast and up the Thames to Royal Greenwich for a spectacular five-day festival The fleet will moor in Royal Greenwich between 5-9 September – and it will be London’s biggest such festival on the Thames for a quarter of a century. Up to one million visitors are expected to attend the five-day festival, sponsored by Barratt

Tall Ships are traditionally large sailing ships with at least two high masts - although for the purposes of the Tall Ships Regatta, any monohull vessel of more than 9.14m waterline length can take part. This means that many modern yachts take part, as well as larger ships traditionally rigged with square sails. Tall Ship rigs include brigantines, barques and topsail schooners. Image: Visit Cornwall

Pacific Quay was filled with boats of all shapes and sizes.

BACK at the end of July, RYA Scotland hosted the ‘Commonwealth Flotilla’ which saw a 250 strong fleet of boats of all shapes and sizes make the 19 nautical mile journey from Greenock to Glasgow up the River Clyde. It was estimated that thousands of people from across Glasgow and west Scotland turned out to welcome the Flotilla filling the official spectator sites at the Beacon Arts Centre and Riverside Museum. As well as the official spectator sites, tens of thousands of people lined the route looking to catch a glimpse of the fleet, some cheering from bridges, with others lined up on every available space on the banks of the River Clyde. The organising team from RYA Scotland also confirmed that over 1,900 sailors took part in the Commonwealth Flotilla, the largest assembly of boats in the history of the Clyde.

HRH Prince Edward chats to flotilla participants during his pontoon walk.

BEYOND EXPECTATION

Heading up the flotilla was the CalMac ferry, ‘Lochinvar’, a diesel electric hybrid which led out the first batch of 50 boats, with other boats taking part ranging from small family cruising yachts to more traditional working boats including the VIC32 ‘Clyde puffer’. James Stuart, CEO of RYA Scotland said: “We are amazed and absolutely thrilled at the success of the Commonwealth Flotilla. We wanted to inject some colour into the Clyde for one weekend in what is probably the most important fortnight in Glasgow’s recent history. Over the last couple of days we had a feeling that this was going to be a big event but the response that we got from spectators throughout the day has been incredible, and totally beyond our expectations. “Speaking to people just after we arrived at Pacific Quay in Glasgow, we really got a sense of the interest and

GEOFF HOLT

YJA YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2010

Double amputee hitches Vo65 riDe A double leg amputee was drafted into Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, Abu Dhabi’s Volvo Ocean Race team for this year’s Artemis Challenge at Cowes Week. Keith Burhans, a 58-year-old paralympian from the USA, had both his legs amputated in 1995 after he was run over by a boat, but the determined sailor received prosthetic limbs just two months after the tragic accident, got back on the water, and even went on to represent the USA at the Sydney 2000 Games. Thanks to an ADOR Facebook competition, the native New Yorker was named the ‘One4Azzam’, winning him a place on the deck of ADOR’s sleek ‘Azzam’ 65ft yacht for the key August test – the first competitive outing for the new Volvo Ocean 65 Azzam and her revamped ADOR crew. Speaking before the race, Burhans said: “I am extremely excited to have been chosen as the ‘One4Azzam’, and I’m eager to have the opportunity to demonstrate what a Paralympian sailor can do with a pro-team, I’ll be doing this for all my Paralympian brothers out there. “I’m excited for the invitation, especially as a disabled person. There are almost no

opportunities for a disabled person to join a team like this so this opportunity may be a chip in that glass ceiling.”

Two heroes

Burhans, who managed to save the lives of his two daughters, Kristen and Allison, in the same accident that cost him his legs, also coached the Greeks in the Athens 2004 Games and is currently Past Commodore of Rochester Yacht Club in New York. He took his very special set of sea legs aboard Azzam alongside skipper Ian Walker and the rest of the ADOR crew for the day as they took on the Artemis Challenge – one of the highlights of the world-famous Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes regatta and a crucial part of the team’s development and training for the Volvo

Ocean Race, which starts in October. “I went to Newport a few weeks ago and met Ian Walker and some others from the Azzam team on the dock. Getting the chance to sail with them is a dream come true - a real bucketlist kind of opportunity,” enthused Burhans. “I’ve followed Ian’s successes over the years while it was fabulous to meet young Adil Khalid, the Emirati sailor who looks like he’s got a huge future ahead of him.” Keith, who heads a specialty advertising company, won the competition by registering 1,925 votes on ADOR’s Facebook site when he presented his case of why he should be the ‘One4Azzam’– 161 votes ahead of his nearest rival. “It was amazing to see such interest from sailing enthusiasts around the globe and we are truly honoured that they decided to share their stories with us. There were many worthy candidates and in Keith we have a winner whose determination reflects the entire Azzam spirit,” said Faisal Al Sheikh, Director, Events Bureau, Abu Dhabi

Tourism & Culture Authority, which is behind ADOR’s Volvo Ocean Race campaign. Ian Walker says the whole ADOR team is in awe of Keith’s courage and fortitude and was pleased to give him the warmest of Arabian welcomes in Cowes. “Azzam is the Arabic for determination so Keith felt at home on board this yacht,” he said. “He’s was very much part of our team.” www.volvooceanraceabudhabi.com

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH WIGHTLINK CAPTAIN TOM VINCENT

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DRIVE A WIGHTLINK FERRY?

Our ferries are designed to be very manoeuvrable, to minimise time taken to carry out berthing and departures. They are capable of being stopped very quickly for their size. It’s actually quite fun to manoeuvre one of my ships!

WHAT DOES A DAY AT WORK TYPICALLY INVOLVE FOR YOU?

Typically we do three or four round trips per shift. As Master my primary role is the safe and efficient operation of the ship, the majority of the shift being spent actually driving the ship. I also make sure other ships activities - cargo operations, paperwork, maintenance, cleaning, repairs, etc - are also undertaken as required and to a high standard.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A MASTER?

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST?

The hands-on ship handling and navigation, and manoeuvring my ship in a confined space every half an hour.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

When the wind is very strong, you have to really know how to handle the ship in order to maintain a safe operation – knowing the limit of your own ability and that of the ship and its equipment is a vital part of being a good Master, things go wrong if risks are taken and boundaries are pushed.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES?

Navigating the ship safely with regards to geographical positioning and collision avoidance are the only things I am concerned about. Commercial pressures do not enter my decision-making process.

I went to sea at 16 as a Deck Officer Cadet with P&O Ferries, then on qualifying as an Officer of the watch I worked on P&O cross channel ferries as Second Officer. I started at Wightlink in March 2005. This is my second year as Master.

HOW BIG IS YOUR TEAM?

I usually have a crew of nine. This includes a Chief Officer, Second Mate, Chief Engineer and Engineer Officer, as well as three deck crew, and two stewards to look after the passengers.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE LEISURE BOATERS USING THE SOLENT?

We have a different view of the water around us, and what might seem ‘plenty of room’ from a leisure craft can seem too close for us. You may sometimes see that our ferries don’t alter course for you, preferring to slow down and allow you to pass ahead. This is because altering course to avoid a close-quarters situation with yourself may result in a close-quarters situation with a different leisure craft. The most critical part of our crossing is around the harbour entrance and Swashway; space is limited, traffic density can be high and tidal currents can be strong. My advice to leisure water users is to maintain a lookout to the highest standard - that’s all round, all the time. Commercial craft may seem far

away but will very quickly be on top of you leaving you less time to react. Never assume that you have been seen; never assume anything!

FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR ON THE SOLENT?

I like working in the Solent all year round as there are different challenges brought by each season; winter with its bad weather and summer with its massive increase in leisure activity. Both add to the interest of the job.

ANY OTHER BOATING ACTIVITY FAVOURITES?

I recently undertook a sponsored paddle of a Wightlink rescue boat (4m RIB) from Portsmouth to Ryde in aid of Ryde Inshore Rescue, which suffered a terrible vandal attack on both its craft, rendering them unusable. We raised over £5,000.

HigHligHtS ashore included a packed schedule of family activities in support of family day on Sunday 3 August, which included an appearance from Andy day of CBeebies on Cowes parade, an outdoor screening of the goonies at northwood House and circus and theatre workshops courtesy of wight Stars at Cowes Yacht Haven. women’s participation in sailing was celebrated on ladies day, which saw the presentation of the ladies day trophy to the inspirational dee Caffari in recognition of her immense contribution to the sport of sailing. the regatta’s new official charity, uKSA had a fantastic response from the public to their stand in Cowes Yacht Haven. fundraising activities included ‘try-Sailing’ taster sessions, gutterboat racing, sending people up a mast and branded bracelets. funds were also raised through an innovative ‘pass the mark’ initiative whereby Aberdeen Asset management donated £1 for every time Aberdeen Alpha was passed. in addition, sales of the official charity t-shirt, designed by leading fashion designer Amanda wakeley (funded by Aberdeen Asset management and other key event partners) raised monies for the charity too. A very special evening of entertainments took place on friday 8 August with a display from the aweinspiring rAf typhoon, the iconic red Arrows, and the traditional fireworks display which, despite the downpour, the crowds still turned out in their droves to enjoy.

in the Black group, overall glory was consistent with the final result in 2013 with island-based Adam gosling in irC 2 winning with his Corby 36, Yes! After finding out he was overall winner of irC 2 and of Black group, Adam said: “we’ve had great rivalry this week against very good sailors. this is the second time in a row that we’ve won Black group, which is rather unexpected. “we set out to win our class, but we knew it would be hard because we were the smallest boat in the class. the key to our win was good starts, which meant we could stay ahead of the larger boats for longer, before eventually getting buried by them, and control the races that way.”

Good breeze and sun provided some fantastic conditions, with the added spectacle of Black Group starting on the Royal Yacht squadron line…

Tense for Tonners

tHingS got tense in the Quarter tonners as Sunday’s race saw only 62 seconds between places two to six. Similarly, the winner on tuesday, tony Hayward’s Blackfun, was decided by just one second from peter ‘morty’ morton’s Bullit, who ended up overall victor on countback.

sunsail three-way tie

tHe Sunsail match f40 class was won convincingly by first Sailing, which sailed a very consistent series in the 42-strong fleet to score only first and second places. However, there was a three-way battle for second place, resolved in favour of Aberdeen Sunsail 1, a point ahead of Simply, which in turn was one point ahead of Chaotic.

Celebrating the old… and the young In celebration of the 50th anniversary of co-ordinated race management by Cowes Combined Clubs, the CCC Anniversary trophy was introduced at this year’s regatta. the trophy was won by Itchenor Sailing Club with its representative team of the XOD, lass, the Solent Sunbeam, Danny, and the Swallow, Gwaihir who fought off stiff competition from 14 other entries across eight different clubs.

Victory dance

MOnDAY saw the Victory class start first off the Squadron line in honour of its 80th anniversary celebrations, on-going throughout the week. After light airs saw the postponement flag raised, the breeze filled in nicely and by the finish it was Janet Dee and Shaun hopkins’ Variety that led the fleet, 94 seconds ahead of Jim Downing’s Ziva, while Zinnia followed just eight seconds behind in third.

the Aberdeen Asset Management under 25 trophy was even more competitive this year with crews from across 20 different boats racing for the award with their entry fee covered by title sponsor, Aberdeen Asset Management. the crew of Jugador in the J/70 class fought off competition from Shoreham Youth team in the Sonar class to take the trophy home, with Jugador skipper, Jack Davies, also taking the Young Skipper’s trophy. Girls for Sail 2 sailed well to take third place in the u25 category.

Cruiser showdown

CRuISeR Division A saw a tight fight all week between Mark Devereux’s Swan 42 Brevity and Julian James’ J/100 thunder Squall. James won the first two races, with Devereux second, but then the order reversed for the final three races, leaving Devereux victorious by just one point. In Cruiser Division B, Piers Dibben’s elan 31 Kalliste won the first two races; however on day three she retired following a protest, picking up 26 points that could not be discarded as the fleet only sailed five races. this left the way open for Ian Miller’s Jeanneau Sun Fast 32 Dabra to win the class overall.

Celebrity dash

the Artemis Challenge, a 50-mile charity celebrity dash around the Isle of Wight in IMOCA 60s, Volvo Ocean 65s and giant mulithulls, this year attracted big names including Zara Phillips and Mike tindall, and Yasmin and Simon le Bon. Competitors were treated to a pre-start fly-by from a classic 1940s Boeing Stearman biplane Spirit of Artemis. the Challenge got underway on schedule at 1000. An hour later the fleet was slowly passing Yarmouth in the dying throes of the overnight north north-westerly breeze, before hooking into the early sea breeze at hurst Castle. the course was eventually shortened at Bembridge, as lionel lemonchois’ trimaran Prince de Bretagne took first place ahead of the MOD70 trimaran Oman Sail – Musandam. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s Volvo Ocean 65 Azzam was the first monohull across the line.

AAS gets double perspective Royal vs Admiral

On tuesday the big yachts in IRC Class 0 were racing for one of the regatta’s most prestigious trophies, the Britannia Cup, presented by King George Vl in 1951. his granddaughter, hRh the Princess Royal was competing for the Cup, racing against her husband Vice Admiral Sir tim laurence on the two identical Farr 65 yachts entered by uKSA, the official event charity. Albatross ll, with the Princess Royal on board, was well up in the pack at the start, with her husband on Whirlwind ll a few

lengths astern and a little to windward. In the match race that naturally developed, Albatross ll extended her lead around the 24-mile course, with hRh the Princess Royal on the helm as she crossed the finish line. In the meantime, Irvine laidlaw’s Reichel Pugh 52 Cape Fling ll had been first across the finish line, almost 15 minutes ahead of Michael Bartholomew’s GP42 tokoloshe ll. however, laidlaw was unable to save his time against the smaller boat and tokoloshe ll won the coveted trophy by 12 seconds on corrected time.

Big boat battle

the opening Saturday saw an energetic race for the big yachts in IRC Class 0, with some 15 legs over a 35 mile course. An incident between two of the most competitive boats in the class – Piet Vroon’s Ker 46 tonnere de Breskens and Michael Bartholomew’s GP42 tokoloshe ll – saw both retire, leaving Irvine laidlaw’s Reichel Pugh 52 Cape Fling ll to take line honours by more than 45 minutes. It was a big enough lead for laidlaw to retain the lead on corrected time by 13 minutes over Richard Rankin’s venerable 12-Metre Italia.

FOR the first part of this year’s regatta, I joined Wing Commander Simon ling and his team on board one of my favourite classes, the J/70, sailing for the RAF Benevolent Fund, writes Georgie Corlett. everything that’s brilliant about this class came to the fore during Wednesday’s race, unanimously voted ‘race of the week’ by all those in the fleet. After jostling for prime position on a downwind start in a freshening breeze, we hit the outer end of the Squadron line as our kite filled and powered us away from our competitors and sent us flying across the Solent towards the mainland shore. But we knew that taking an early lead in a fleet as competitive as this is no guarantee of victory. Proof of that came as, over the next three hours of racing, the top three boats continually vied with each other to take the lead, reeling one another in then leap frogging in front before the next boat stole back the advantage. Centimetres separated the boats as they surfed downing, cruising at 16 knots. then came the upwind chess-game, and the balance between when to tack and when to stand on in the shifty band of breeze blowing off the island shore became ever more complicated as we dodged etchells and SB20s. As the top three boats converged on the finish line, the final scramble saw just 10 seconds separating first to third places, with every hard-fought boat length throughout that race counting right there and then.

later in the week, I swapped inshore sportsboat fleet for a race in IRC Class 2, sailing a Beneteau Figaro with Artemis Offshore Academy professionals, Robin elsey and Will harris. As we bobbed about, the smallest of the 30-plus boats on a very busy startline, Will and Robin gave a fine demonstration of their double-handed training with the Academy, as they set up the boat and charged across the line with barely a hand from myself or the other three guest crew on board. But we weren’t staying as passengers for long! Once we had cleared the start, I was given the helm and - with just a bit of coaching from Robin - we slowly but surely started to gain places as we beat westwards up the Solent. With brilliant sunshine and 20 knots of breeze, I was realising a real champagne moment. With its twin rudders, the Figaro was superbly responsive and fun to sail upwind, and surprisingly steady - and of course fast - downwind. But drama struck later in the race as first the kicker exploded during a mark rounding, and then our foredeck’s lifejacket snagged and activated itself! Both incidents were dealt with calmly and with good humour by our pro sailors, and we knew we were truly in good hands when they cracked out the baguettes and drinks on the final run back towards Cowes (an inconceivable luxury on the J/70!). And all whilst skewing down the now-quite-sizeable waves as our speed nudged into double figures. looking to the Green and seeing the crowds gaze towards us as we pelted across the line, it was a fantastic finale to another great Cowes Week.

Bistro 8 boasts a leafy terrace, space for the kids, kennels for the dogs - very cool. It is a tad unexpected to see a suited, professional greet you at the door, but the staff are all very pleasant, and if the drinks weren’t arriving quite as quickly as the heat of the day asked, they were just getting to grips with a brand new menu.

Head up the cobbled high street for the best coffee in town. Bonne Bouche Deli has been here for many years, but just a few weeks ago Georgie took over, and extended the place, so you can eat, drink coffee and read the papers inside as well as out. She serves Monmouth coffee for those who care about such things and the cheerful team will prepare fresh sandwiches to eat in or take on a picnic. Tel: 023 8045 5771

Victory pie

The path along the river bank on the eastern shore of the Hamble is less built up than the western side and as you make your way up towards Bursledon the views of busy river and wildlife are joyful. As you near Universal Marina, an interesting silver boathouse amid the trees beckons intrigue.

The menu is simple, the wine list good, packed with all your favourites. Quite a few people were just drinking coffee, reading the papers, meeting friends. The gas-fired pizza oven has been

built for speed but I’m told the pizzas taste great, and top dish of the day was the clams, chorizo, samphire, herbs and wine, cooked in the clay oven. The lightly dusted squid with homemade tartare was light as popcorn and perfect for lunch, if you wanted to try out the chargrilled peaches with amaretto sweet lime marscapone – perfect! I had a glass of the Rimauresq Cote de Provence as it was 28 degrees and rosé weather and the three items set me back £21, so you won’t be coming here every day for lunch, but what a perfect oasis of calm amongst the heat and bustle of the Hamble on a busy work day. A great place for an early evening cocktail – I spied both my best rum and favourite gin behind the bar – will have to come back for a tasting! PS Do visit the loos.

Opposite Bonne Bouche is The Victory. Hamble has it’s fair share of pubs per square footage but there are sailors I know who always go to The Victory, simply for its home-made pie. It’s always on the menu, but on Wednesdays you get a choice of pie, mash, peas and gravy for just £7.50; I think the steak and ale is probably my favourite.

Pink perspective Catch the ferry over to Warsash for a different perspective on the river. The pink ferry runs every day of the year except Christmas Day. It costs £1 each way for adults, £1.75 if you take your bike and 75p for kids. To find the ferry, walk past the Royal Southern YC and follow the signs. The crossing - just a quarter of a mile - saves you a five mile round river walk. It’s cool and shady on the other side!

WHAT TO WEAR?

See if you can match the right bit of kit to the right activity. Remember some items of kit can be used for more than one activity!

TOP TIPS It’s often much cooler on the water than on shore, so here are some top tips to keep you warm:

Buoyancy Aid

■ If you can, take spare layers in case you get wet or need to add more clothes

Deck Shoes

■ Fleeces and thermals will keep you toastie warm and are lightweight – you don’t want to wear anything too heavy or bulky

Fleece Top Gloves Goggles

■ The key to staying warm is staying dry so make sure you wear the right kit

Helmet Leg Protectors Race Overalls Rash Vest

If you’re going out and about on the water then it’s important that you keep warm and dry so that you can enjoy yourself and avoid getting cold and fed up. So wearing the right kit for the boating you do is essential.

Sun Cream Wetsuit Wetsuit Boots

But remember, whatever boating you do make sure you wear your life jacket or buoyancy aid!

Bob the Buoy’s windy fact

The windiest place on earth is said to be Commonwealth Bay located along the coast of Antarctica. Here, the icy winds blow all year round and are said to move at speeds of up to 200 miles an hour. Brrrr! Learn lots more sailing terms and great tips in the RYA’s Go Sailing book

ALL AT SEA SEPTEMBER 2014

Don’t forget you can also enter our fantastic competition online. Log onto www.allatsea.co.uk for your chance to win.

Competition

Worth over £700 - enter now! We’ve teamed up with our friends at McMurdo Group to give one lucky reader the chance to win a Smartfind S10 or S20 AIS MOB device and the New SmartFind M10 AIS Class B.

Did you know that AIS can save your life? NOTIFY – LOCATE – TRACK – RESCUE Localised rescue, when every second counts….

Finding a MOB in the water and navigating your vessel to their location can be difficult, particularly at night or in strong tides. A survivor recovery system which uses AIS, to automatically signal the crew member’s vessel, greatly increases the chances of identifying the MOB’s location and subsequently recovering them from the water. Smartfind AIS MOB devices, provide near immediate notification to the parent or neighbouring vessels of a Man Overboard (MOB) incident and provide a means of location to determine the position of the MOB. When combined with a SmartFind M10 AIS Class B Transponder and AIS Viewer software running on your Windows laptop (or existing compatible plotter), an activated AIS MOB device will transmit the position of the MOB, which will be displayed as a GPS located target icon. A range and bearing to the exact location is provided and updated in real time, to aid recovery of the drifting MOB. Smartfind AIS MOB devices have a built-in, high precision GPS receiver - which updates every 60 seconds - assuring accuracy of the data transmitted. They will transmit continuously for up to 24 hours.

DEEP END

Learn to saiL - dinghies

Back to basics

There is no graceful way to board a Pico from the shore, or none that I discovered on a weekend spent refreshing my dinghy sailing skills. As I nose dived for the fourth time I began to wonder if I was alone in this. The quick answer is yes; Carl, my eversupportive boyfriend of 6’3” hopped over the side of his boat with sheer elegance. Waiting for the wind to hit my sails, with my feet dangling in the water I wondered why hadn’t I done this earlier. In truth I had - I was nine years old learning on a purpose-built lake in London; it didn’t end well as I crashed into a wall, freaked out when capsizing and got hit by the boom more times than I want to admit. Since then, I had spent the majority of my boating career letting someone else take the helm. Now, I had decided, it was time to change that. So on a blistering hot day in Cornwall we rocked up to the Siblyback Lake, on Bodmin Moor, where we were met by our instructor James. he explained that in total we would have to master two moves, three sail settings and how to judge the wind. Sounds easy, right? Re-leaRning the Ropes Jumping into a Wayfarer sat on the shoreline I desperately tried to remember which foot was to go where and what hand was meant to hold what. I spotted Carl’s grinning face. It was his turn next, swinging himself into position he leant to make the move, and executed it perfectly. Although this wasn’t a competition, I couldn’t help but kick myself. Taking what we had learned on the shore to the water though was a different matter, speeding along to the first bright orange buoy it was Carl’s turn to tack first. As he approached he shouted, “tacking” and I expertly released the jib, and switched sides, while he did the hard job. Pushing the tiller hard away, he had changed his hands but the effort of pushing the tiller away made him sit straight back down.

aLL at sea SEPTEMBER 2014

a dinghy sailing course proves to be a great way to brush up on old skills and learn some news moves, as georgia Pitt discovered when she went back to basics with an rYa course. Carl gets to grips with the Pico, which proved more challenging than the Wayfarer!

the lake he let the sails out and brought them back in tight to make sure we were going as fast as possible. Next, we were tasked with gybing. I was up first and as we careened across to the new buoy I prepared to pull the tiller in, it all happened so quickly, as we had been told it would and we flipped sides! I had done it. But now we were going fast - and I mean fast; this was the first time we had been sailing across the wind and boy you could tell the difference. I didn’t feel in control any more, and I was so thankful when we were called in and sent home for the evening. The next morning, James pointed to our boats for the day, two Picos. Carl’s face dropped as he was over twice the size of the boat! Jumping not-so-elegantly into the boat we set off individually. All we had to do was manage our sails, work out how to sail into the wind, a bit of gybing and tacking and hey presto – we will have passed. After the first bungled attempt he started to get it, and at this point the safety boat came to our side, and James introduced sail settings. As this was a particularly windless day in June, we would have to be clever to work out where the wind was coming from and how we could make the most of it. staying in contRol Watching Carl adjust to this new challenge was perfect; he could make all the mistakes and then I could clean up when it was my turn. As we darted across Siblyback Lake sits on the edge of Bodmin Moor offering a perfect lake location to enjoy sailing, windsurfing, and other outdoor activities. Beginners courses, improvers’ clinics and junior sessions are all available. www.swlakestrust.org.uk

Now we were going fast - and I mean fast; this was the first time we had been sailing across the wind and boy you could tell the difference. I didn’t feel in control any more... confidence boost Lap after lap I was getting it; I worked out how to manage my sails with a severe lack of wind, I was shown how to get out of irons and was actually confident going at speed – it was brilliant! The icing on the cake came when I shot past Carl, who was struggling with the smaller boat and looking a lot less pro than day one. I watched as he gybed too quickly, almost launching himself over the side of the boat. But then, as he approached the first buoy, he tacked upwind towards the raft island in the middle of the lake, gybing gently around it and finally he let his sails out downwind for the home straight – this is what the whole weekend had been leading to. We had both done it. Pulling in my sails to congratulate him I zoomed around the lake, filled with confidence – unfortunately he took this to mean I wanted to race him! On our journey home we recounted the course. Before it started I feared it would be patronising, but the knowledge, experience and delivery from our instructor James was incredible - leaving us with happy memories, a certificate and a hugely renewed confidence.

staRt sailing What’s the best way to get started in dinghy sailing? keep your family safe afloat! You can buy lifejackets and buoyancy aids for all situations. In order to make an informed decision, you first need to differentiate between the functions of a lifejacket and a buoyancy aid. Both products keep you afloat yet are designed for specific usage.

Buoyancy aid Benefits

Keith Hughes, Managing Director of Baltic Safety Products for the UK, advises on finding the right floatation device for all the family…

But is a lifejacket or buoyancy aid more suitable for your activity? The rule of thumb is that lifejackets should be worn when sailing offshore, and for all non-swimmers when taking to the water. There are two types of lifejackets: firstly foam jackets, such as those for children or those you find on ferries and secondly inflatable lifejackets. Buoyancy aids are the popular and obvious choice worn for sports such as water-skiing, dinghy sailing and kayaking where self-rescue is feasible and a lifejacket can impede re-boarding. A buoyancy aid rated to 50 Newton class will support a person over 25 kg with a good freeboard. However as it will not turn them over into the safe back position it requires the wearer to orientate their position in the water. This

category contains all–purpose, specialist buoyancy aids and floatation clothing. These are popular products because they have a perfect balance between function, freedom of movement and security. There are no overriding rules which apply, and your local chandlery should be able to advise you according to your needs.

How does your lifejacket rate? Lifejackets and buoyancy aids are rated throughout Europe with a Newton classification guide. There are four ratings classes. Starting at 50 Newton class (EN 393/EN ISo 12402-5), buoyancy aids and floatation clothing will hold a person afloat with a good margin of safety but will not turn you over into the safe back position or support your head. Buoyancy aids must only be used by swimmers and can only be manufactured for persons of 25kg and over.

All At SEA September 2014

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. For young children, a 100 Newton class (EN 395/EN ISo 12402-4) lifejacket is recommended. This class is generally foam lifejackets with the inherent buoyancy concentrated to the front to help a person turn over onto the safe back position. The collar helps support the head keeping the airways clear of the water. Suitable for swimmers and nonswimmers in inshore or sheltered waters. Above that, a 150 Newton class (EN 396/EN ISo 12402-3) lifejacket has a good turning capacity when inflated (either manually or automatically), and is recommended for use by swimmers 40 kg and over in all sea conditions. A 275 Newton Class has the same characteristics, but is primarily for industrial or offshore use.

find your fit

When it comes to fit, the main consideration is that it should be comfortable for the wearer and allow good movement, rather than the weight category indicated on the label. Children’s lifejackets in particular should not be bought ‘to grow into’ as a lifejacket that is too big could hinder their movement and slip off more easily. For adults, most buoyancy aids and lifejackets are sold to fit certain weight ranges. The fit should be comfortable and some manufacturers produce gender specific designs. www.baltic.se

PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA

BLASÉ ABOUT BUOYAGE?

Knowing your buoyage is like knowing your traffic signs on the road. But after a while, do you become blasé about what you’re seeing on the water? There’s a big difference between seeing, understanding and interpreting for a safe passage explains Rachel Andrews, RYA Chief Instructor, Motor Cruising and Power. Here is a brief reminder of some buoys to look for… 1. Port and starboard marks

These are the most common marks. They flash red or green to any rhythm (apart from group flashing 2+1. This sequence is reserved for preferred channel marks. These may be seen where a channel divides) - the light sequence will be marked on the chart for a specific buoy - to mark the outer edge of a channel. Lateral marks are laid in the direction of the flood tide. In International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) region A, which incorporates the UK and much of Europe, red cans mark the port side of the channel, and green cones mark the starboard side.

Did you know, this is the opposite if you are in North or South America, Canada or certain parts of South East Asia? These areas are part of IALA region B. thedoubt belt tension Tip: LEFT: If youChecking are in any aboutis correctly the direction buoyage, then adjustedofhelps prevent future problems. check on the chart for this arrow…

2. Cardinal marks

These are used to indicate the direction of the safest navigable water from a mark. For example, if you see a South Cardinal ahead, you should stay to the south. The light sequences can be either quick (Q) or very quick (VQ), which allows for two similar nearby marks to be uniquely identified by their lights.

3. Safe water mark

Sometimes called a ‘fairway buoy’ or ‘sea buoy’, they are striped vertically red and white, have a single ball on top and flash a single long white flash every 10 seconds. These buoys are usually set in safe, deep water at the seaward end of fairways, or harbour approach channels. They have unobstructed water on all sides. Traditionally, they are the point of departure or, when arriving, the waypoints to aim for, and mark the transition from open water navigation to pilotage.

4. Isolated danger mark

These marks are used to mark a relatively small hazard in the middle of an area of open water. They can be passed on either side, although you should exercise caution when approaching.

5. Special marks

These marks have no navigational significance but mark special areas or features such as racecourse areas, to define swimming or water-skiing zones, anchoring, fish farming, firing ranges and jetties, for example. They are not used to mark a hazard to navigation. Special marks can be all sorts of shapes, but are always yellow and often have a cross as a top mark. If they are lit, it will be with a yellow light.

They can be buoys, beacons, or even concrete pillars but they are always painted with red and black horizontal stripes with two black balls on top. If they are lit it will be with a white light flashing in groups of two.

Teen inspiration

FROM record heatwave temperatures to hurricanes – nothing was going to stop this very determined teenager from completing her unique Sea and Summit challenge. My good friend Natasha ‘Miss Isle’ Lambert declared she “didn’t want to leave her boat” after completing the final sailing leg of her extraordinary Sea and Summit challenge on 19 August. Then as she successfully scaled the 2,907ft Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons to complete the ‘Summit’ element on 22 August, she had just one word to say: “Wow!”

Image: Shelley Jory-Leigh

SUPPORTING ROLE I joined Natasha’s team eight months ago to lead her powerboat support crew with wonderful support and help from Redstone and Honda UK, who lent Natasha and I their R8 Cougar RIB,

complete with a new Honda 250 engine, which has not missed a beat throughout the challenge. We started the adventure in late July in record heatwave temperatures and low winds and keeping Natasha cool for long hours at sea in her crash helmet was the first hurdle. Then hurricane Bertha decided to turn up halfway through the challenge – putting the whole team ashore on standby, but nothing was going to stop Natasha and her team. I have been overwhelmed by the determination and sometimes downright-stubborn attitude from her and her family not to give in. Our team of powerboat skippers and motorhome drivers sum up the spirit of the challenge, calling it “a truly inspirational adventure”. Another said: “It has been a very humbling experience to help Natasha out on this great adventure” whilst another described mum Amanda, and dad Gary as “the most selfless parents I have ever met”. Perhaps the most motivating: “Natasha has completely changed my outlook on charity”.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS For personally, the most amazing moment of our month-long adventure was when Natasha had just walked back down Pen y Fan (something which was not planned but our rescue vehicle broke quarter of way down!). I was helping Natasha and she got onto the flat bit of car park and ran in her walker to her motorhome. She then burst into tears of sheer relief, joy and exhaustion! I still get emotional now just thinking about it. Another memorable moment was being welcomed into Dartmouth by the Dart RNLI inshore lifeboat, and cheers from the 40 youngsters sailing from Royal Dart YC. Then when she came ashore, Natasha was presented with a cheque for £400 by Peter Goldstraw from The Rotary Club of Dartmouth, raised amongst its members, in a show of goodwill from well-wishers and supporters. And of course, Natasha reaching the pinnacle of the challenge, accompanied by

We started the ascent at 6.45am on a rather chilly, misty morning. Three and half hours later – we all stood triumphantly atop the summit – proud and emotional. Natasha’s mum Amanda, said: “We were told years ago that Natasha’s life would be different but we didn’t expect anything like this! It’s spectacular. We feel elated, chuffed and so proud of Natasha.”

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON MARINAS AND HARBOURS

SOUTHSEA MARINA Southsea Marina Fort Cumberland Road, Portsmouth Hampshire, PO4 9RJ Tel: 02392 822 719 Email: southsea@premiermarinas.com VHF 80

NESTLING on the Eastney Peninsula, in the quieter reaches of Langstone Harbour, Southsea Marina is perfectly located for exploring the delights of the Solent. A friendly, working marina, ideal for sailing and motor cruisers alike, Southsea offers outstanding value, first-class facilities and a personal service that includes a 24-hour manned reception. The marina’s popularity owes much to its locations, just minutes from the Solent, and to its value for money berthing. Pretty, quiet and friendly, it has a sailing club feel and an excellent reputation for customer service and a ‘can-do’ attitude.

The marina is also popular with fishermen, and has a thriving angling club. Visitors should note that access to the marina is unique in being via an automatic tidal gate that opens and closes with the tide. There is however a waiting pontoon and berth holders can leave their boats on the pontoon for the marina staff to bring in when the gate is open. Most berth holders use the time to fuel up. The marina prides itself on its friendly outlook, and holds regular open days for prospective berth holders. Berth holder parties and ‘cruise in company’ events add to the social atmosphere for berth holders and their guests.

EXPLORING ASHORE

FOR stocking up on supplies, Chris Hornsey Chandlery located on Eastney Road five minutes from the marina by car - is well stocked. There is also a Co-Operative supermarket on Eastney Road. If you are dinning out, the Marina Bar Café and popular Indian restaurant, Bombay Bay, are both located at the marina. There’s a unique range of restaurants, shops and boutiques to visit in Southsea, and plenty to do there too - with an aquarium and the Pyramids Leisure Pool on the seafront. The Southsea model village contains 40 miniature houses, forts and castles. Or, relax and watch the world go by on Southsea Common, adjacent to the seafront with many interesting walkways and features.

EXPLORING AFLOAT

DEVELOPMENT AND FACILITIES THE marina was originally built during the 1980s. Its owner, Premier, is in the process of renewing the facilities in the marina, with the finish date planned for the end of December 2014. The new facilities will be ‘five star luxury’ style as already seen at Port Solent, Chichester and Swanwick Marinas. Premier has also just installed an entirely new WiFi infrastructure that will provide

Southsea berth holders with quality free WiFi service. Southsea Marina can accommodate vessels up to 16m in length and 2.3m draft. It has 307 berths in total. All berths have access at all states of tide, plus electricity and water supplies. Onshore, there is a fully serviced boatyard with 25 tonne hoist, 15 tonne boat mover and a 10 tonne crane.

SITUATED as it is at the heart of the south coast sailing scene, and being just a few minutes from the Solent, Southsea Marina makes a great starting point for exploring afloat. Chichester Harbour, the Solent and the Isle of Wight all make easy weekend cruising destinations, and have plenty in store, whether you are cruising under sail or power. Bembridge and Ryde are particularly popular destinations on the island shore, whilst staying on the mainland side, East Head makes a lovely spot to drop anchor on a summers day and spend some time with family and friends. Premier has sister marinas to Southsea located at Chichester and Gosport, both within easy reach and with plenty of attractions of their own. For longer durations of a week or more, set course for Eastbourne and Brighton, where you can also find a warm welcome at Premier marinas, or even venture cross-Channel for a taste of continental cruising.

The entire Portsmouth area is steeped in history with a distinct maritime twist. Take a trip to Portsmouth Dockyard and experience 800 years of naval history, or discover the stories behind the historic landings at the D-Day Museum. Explore the Royal Marines Museum in its striking Victorian setting, or go even further back to Tudor times at Southsea Castle. Further away, Gunwharf Quays with its outlet shopping, restaurants, cafés, bars, casino, multiplex cinema and the famous Spinnaker Tower are also well worth a visit. For an escape to a rather more rural setting, the Hayling Ferry is within easy walking distance, giving you access to miles of beautiful sandy beaches on the traditional seaside venue of Hayling Island.

ACCESS BY LAND

SouthSEA Marina lies at the heart of the south coast and is very well connected by road. From the east, take the A27, following signs to Portsmouth. After havant, branch left (signposted Southsea). From the west, take the M27, following signs to Portsmouth and then onto the A27. From London and the A3, follow signs for Portsmouth and merge onto the A27. Follow signs for Southsea; once on the A2030 travel for almost four miles, turn left onto Milton Road (A288), signposted Eastney. turn left into Bransbury Road, continue forward into henderson Road, turn left into Ferry Road, signposted hayling Ferry. After 0.2 miles turn left into Southsea Marina.

By rail, Fratton is the nearest station, lying on the Portsmouth and Southsea main line with regular trains to Chichester, London (1h 28m) and Southampton.

ACCESS BY SEA

the approach to Langstone harbour is easy in most weather conditions, but best from high Water –3 to +1 hour. the entrance channel lies between the East and West Winner drying banks, which offer some protection. once close to the Fairway Beacon, approximately one mile to the South of the harbour entrance, in line with a conspicuous chimney, steer 344º to just clear East Winner. the entrance itself deepens and favours the West side. the harbour speed limit is 10

knots and 5 knots in the marina approach channel. the entrance to the Southsea Marina channel is located just past the hayling Ferry pontoon. Seven starboard hand and nine port hand markers mark the approach channel, the first of which are lit piles. of the remaining eight port hand markers, the 4th, 6th and 9th are all lit. None of the starboard hand markers – made up of two buoys and a further three piles – are lit. the western waiting pontoon is marked with a starboard hand light. the marina channel is dredged to 0.5m below chart datum, although this can vary and vessels with a draft of 1.5m or more should exercise caution when approaching at LW –2 to +2 hours.

“May I take the opportunity to comment generally on the quality of service at Southsea Marina. The staff around the marina always seem to be very helpful and cheerful and so contribute to an amicable atmosphere” - ted, a berth holder at Southsea Marina

ENtERING thE MARINA

Access to Southsea Marina is via a tidal cill gate and is suitable for vessels up to 18m, 7 metre beam, 2.5 draft. Vessels enter the marina via an automatic cill gate that rises and falls according to the action of the tides. this gives approximately 6 hours of access per tidal cycle. Visitors need to be aware that the red and green lights at the marina entrance show if the cill gate is up or down. they are not used to control traffic! Red light – cill gate up. No access. Green light – cill gate down. Access allowed - but check the gauge outside the marina to ensure that there is enough water depth to give you clearance. And bear in mind that the published draft of your vessel is based on its unladen displacement! When entering the marina, the vessel travelling with the tide takes priority over a vessel travelling in the

opposite direction. Be aware that cill gate times are always approximate and can be affected by weather conditions and air pressure. there is an outer waiting pontoon adjacent to the marina entrance for vessels waiting to enter the marina if the cill gate is up, or there is insufficient water. Marina staff are happy to move boats permanently berthed in the marina to or from the waiting pontoon free of charge, Monday to Friday (with 24 hours’ notice). harbour dues are payable in Langstone harbour. For more information please call 02392 463 419. Before entering the marina channel, use VhF Channel 80, call sign ‘Southsea Marina’, for berthing instructions, or call 02392 822 719. After berthing, visit the Marina Reception to collect a key fob to access the pontoon walkways and shower/ toilet blocks and to discuss electricity requirements. the P&o Fast Ferry Service is twice daily to troon from Larne.

DID You kNoW?

SouthSEA Marina’s cill gate uses the laws of buoyancy. When the water outside the marina is level with the top of the cill gate, the weights connected to the gate and the cill gate itself are balanced. When the sea level rises, the weights become (relatively) lighter allowing the cill gate to lower. this continues until it eventually lies flat. At this point there is 1.6m depth of water over the cill gate and a green light will be displayed at the marina entrance. Vessels with a draft over 1.6m should wait on the outer waiting pontoon until the tide has risen further before entering the marina. As the tide goes out the gate rises because the weights attached to it become (relatively) heavier and therefore pull up the cill gate. the automatic cill gate ensures water depth in the marina stays at 2.4 metres for the deeper berths, dropping to 1.3 metres around the edge of the marina for vessels with a shallower draft. the marina entrance is 7 metres wide.

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.

Cowes Week treats

Premium brand gin and tonic steal the limelight

AN ELEGANT PARTNERSHIP

In a reverse compliment, Fever-Tree chose Williams Chase Elegant Gin for their gift box and for their Ultimate Gin & Tonic bar set up in the Cowes Week Marina Village. William Chase is a Herefordshire potato farmer who diversified to create Tyrrells Crisps in 2002, then Chase Potato Vodka and then Williams Chase Gin. His farm grows King Edward and Lady Claire potatoes for the distillery and cider apples for their gin and apple vodka. The gin recipe includes the essential juniper, the usual coriander and angelica and the unusual liquorice, hops, elderflower and Bramley apples, plus natural water from the farm’s own aquifer. Bottled at an unusual 48 per cent abv, the gin is full bodied, sharp yet fruity and the first and only gin to be distilled from home-grown cider apples. Find Fever-Tree at supermarkets at around £3.00 for four 200 ml bottles. Other premium tonics such as Fentimans are also available. Find Williams Chase Gin at Waitrose at £38 for a 70cl bottle or on line from www.williamschase.co.uk.

Just as juniper is the required added ingredient to turn a simple vodka-type spirit into gin, so the key ingredient that turns fizzy water into tonic is quinine. In its natural form it comes from the cinchona tree. The tree’s native name is ‘quina’ but its reputed medicinal benefit earned it the local nickname of ‘the fever tree’. For centuries quinine was the only known antidote for malaria. The medicinal dose was bitter and unpalatable. Mixing with water and a little cane sugar helped the medicine go down. When quinine supplies were interrupted by WWII, synthetic quinine was invented and tonic makers already established never returned to the real thing. Fever-Tree’s focus is on all natural ingredients. The natural quinine comes from the Congo. Other botanicals include cane sugar and bitter orange oils. Carbonation is done at high pressure, creating small, champagne-like bubbles. Quinine reacts to sunlight, taking on an arctic ice flow pale blue hue which is what makes a G&T sundowner look so invitingly refreshing. All this is worth the price premium when combining with a premium priced gin!

SOME lucky crews at last month’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week had a nice surprise when they were met after racing by a rubber dubber handing out free Fever-Tree goodie bags. They had all the essential ingredients for a special gin and tonic for the crew once they had completed their return to shore and featured Williams Chase boutique gin, Fever-Tree tonics and glasses ready primed with a lime slice. Unsurprisingly, it was the past decade’s expansion of boutique gins, such as Chase and many others, that led Tim Warrilow and Charles Rolls to create premium quality Fever-Tree tonic water in 2005.

Boat show brew On now to the PSP Southampton Boat Show. For a new range of real ales, drop into the Platform Tavern Pub opposite the entry to the Red Jet ferry terminal. The pub is home to the Dancing Man Brewery, born in 2012 by owners Stewart and Aidan, assisted by brewer Freddie. They are aiming, they say, “to create craft beers with extreme hopping schedules, experimental malt bills, exotic beer styles and new-fangled ingredients, all spliced together in our tiny but mighty one barrel brew house”. A good place to check the carrier bag of brochures after the show. www.platformtavern.com
