FROM PAGE ONE: residents and visitors to the Solent, one of the best known and best loved sailing waters around the UK, awoke on January 4 to find a 51,000-tonne car transporter hard aground on the Bramble Bank at the entrance to Southampton Water. reports suggested they might have to get used to the sight of the Hoegh Osaka for days or even weeks before the 590ft ship, which was only one-third full, could be refloated. Locals were surprised to learn the transporter had been deliberately run aground to prevent a bigger catastrophe after developing unexplained problems. The deep-water channel around the Bramble Bank is the maritime equivalent to the M25 and so had the crew not taken action the situation clearly could have led to even greater disruption and chaos in one of the busiest waters for shipping. Ingar Skiaker, chief executive of Hoegh Autoliners, explained:“Our vessel developed a severe list shortly after she left port and the pilot and the master took the decision to save the vessel and its crew by grounding her on the bank. We have serious work ahead of us in order to free the vessel from the Bramble Bank without disrupting the flow of traffic in and out of the Port of Southampton.” A 200m exclusion zone was created around the transporter to prevent small boats interfering with

the tugs and other shipping as salvagers tried to get aboard. Svitzer were appointed as salvers to assess the condition of the cargo and the potential impact on refloating the Hoegh Osaka. As well as 1,400 cars on board there were around 70 pieces of construction equipment. The ship had been en route to Germany after leaving the Port of Southampton when the incident occurred. The major rescue operation involved four rNLI lifeboats together with the Solent Coastguard helicopter. Thanks to them all 25 crew were safely brought ashore with two being treated at hospital for minor injuries. Steve Carson, National Maritime Operations Centre Commander, said: “All of the crew have been accounted for and other then a couple of non life-threatening injuries, everyone is safe and well.” According to the rNLI’s Tom Pederson most crew members were on the high side of the ship waiting to be rescued while one was rescued from the water. Describing the incident, Pederson said: “Fortunately, the rescue helicopter managed to winch most of the crew to safety in quite challenging conditions, while two people were rescued by the Calshot rNLI lifeboats. “One of them leaped around eight metres from the ship into the water and was picked up immediately
by our inshore D-Class lifeboat Willet. The other was rescued from the bow of the ship.” There were no immediate reports of oil and other contaminants leaking into the surrounding water but the situation was being closely monitored. Perhaps unsurprisingly the Hoegh Osaka became an attraction for local people wanting to see the vessel for themselves. Hampshire police posted advice to
motorists on social media warning them the local area had become “extremely busy”. Many questions remain about how the incident could happen. However, this is not the first occurance of this kind. In November 2008, the Cunard liner Queen elizabeth 2 ran aground on Bramble Bank with 1,700 passengers. On that occasion the ship was freed on the rising tide as four tugs pulled it clear.
New Year, new show for Poole
Over the weekend of 9 – 10th May, Poole is to host its own boat show, which willl be organised and operated by Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC). This free public event will take place on Poole Quay and at PHC’s award-wining marina Poole Quay Boat Haven, and will include a variety of marine-related businesses and family entertainment. The event will have the backing of the British Marine Federation along with other wellknown organisations, like the rNLI, who will play a key role across the weekend. Jim Stewart, Poole Harbour Commissioner’s chief executive says, “From local chandlers to rig makers and other marine-focused suppliers, we hope the Poole Harbour Boat Show will become a staple date on the regional maritime calendar. As we head towards 2017 and Poole’s hosting of european Maritime Day, the new boat show enables us to highlight the many varied businesses within the marine sector here. We aim for it to grow year on year and to maintain its full inclusivity to all.”

The dust has settled, heads have cleared and 2015 is well and truly here. however, sadly it hasn’t been the best start to the year with the dramatic events unfolding in the Solent just three days into January. While it is still early days into the investigation about what happened to the hoegh osaka, it is clear she was run aground by her crew on bramble bank. Clearly this incident could have been far worse with the loss of lives and major disruption to shipping. Nonetheless it raises new questions about safety in this area and how it could have been prevented. boating incidents have been making the news a lot recently, and not for the right reasons. A cement carrier sank with the loss of its crew off Scotland. More than 400 passengers were rescued from a burning ferry in the Mediterranean just days after Christmas, and this was followed by 1,000 migrants being saved from an abandoned cargo ship that had been found adrift in Greek waters. of course, all these incidents are very different and raise differing questions, which hopefully will be answered in time. let’s hope the rest of 2015 is a little less dramatic. In the sailing world we’re lucky to always have something to look forward to in the new year with the
london boat Show being one of the first events on the calendar. What better way to start the new year than catch up with fellow boaters, check out the latest boats and kit and start filling up the diary with boat shows, races and festivals. We’ve put together a handy guide to the show (see page 24) including kit to look out for and the boats that will be making their debut. With so much to see be sure to organise your day and, where necessary, make appointments to chat to exhibitors. They’ll be more than happy to spend time with you. That’s the london boat Show, but if, like me, you like to plan ahead then I suggest you turn to page 23 and check out our new events guide. With so much going on around the world we only have space for the next month or so but we have a far more extensive listing on the All At Sea website – www.allatsea.co.uk . If you know of a local boating event or are involved in one please send over the details and we’ll add them. It isn’t only events that are fun to put on the calendar. how many of you have already got this year’s holidays booked? Take a look at this edition’s sailing holiday features for pages of inspirational ideas. And don’t forget to send us a postcard! editor@allatsea.co.uk
NEW RECORD FOR ALEX
BRITISH sailor Alex Thomson set sail for a new record in the 2014 – 2015 Barcelona world Race. Alex Thomson and his co-Skipper Pepe Ribes are sailing HuGo BoSS, an IMoCA 60 racing yacht, the 26,000 nautical miles, non-stop, unassisted around the globe. Alex and Pepe had an incredible start to the race on December 31 after crossing the pin end of the start line first, placing them
in the lead for the first mark rounding. The duo soon entered the Gibraltar Straights, a critical area of the race, in record time - 2 days 7 hours and 35 minutes. Thompson has history with this race having finished second with co-skipper Andrew Cape in 2007 – 2008. However, since then Thomson has successfully completed the gruelling Vendee Globe - a solo, unassisted round-the-world race -

Dongfeng pipped again Bouwe Bekking (NeD) and Team Brunel found a very timely change of gear to sweep past Dongfeng Race Team and edge to a 16-minute victory in an incident-packed Leg 2 of the Volvo ocean Race on 13th December. The wily Dutch campaigner, competing in a record-equalling seventh race, looked likely to have lost out in a thrilling sprint to the finish in the 5,200 nautical mile second stage with some five hours to go. However, Team Brunel found an extra surge of wind pressure to sweep past Charles Caudrelier’s (FRA) men, even though the boats were only a couple of hundred metres apart, and before long they were a mile clear. Bouwe and his equally experienced navigator, Andrew Cape
(AuS), have too much know-how to let an advantage like that slip and for the second leg running, the Chinese boat was forced to settle for the runners-up spot. The leg may always be remembered for the grounding of the Team Vestas wind (Chris Nicholson/AuS) boat on a reef in the middle of the Indian ocean on November 29th, ten days after the departure from Cape Town, which forced their abandonment from the stage, but this grandstand finish will also stay long in the memory. Dongfeng’s second runners-up spot leaves them equal on points at the top of the standings with Team Brunel and Abu Dhabi ocean Racing. There’s all to play for with seven legs to go before the race finale in Gothenburg on June 27th.
Did you know? The Volvo Ocean Race started in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race.
breaking a British record along the way. The Barcelona world Race, expected to take around 90 days, is the only doublehanded, non-stop, round the world regatta. Starting and finishing in Barcelona, the course will take HuGo BoSS via the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn. The race is part of the prestigious ocean Masters world Championships. www.alexthomsonracing.com THe RYA is turning the spotlight on 2014’s most promising young sailors, windsurfers and powerboaters by opening nominations for the RYA Regional Youth Champion Awards. These regional awards, launched last year, are a fantastic opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievement and performance of young people across the range of activities the RYA represents. RYA Sport Development Manager Duncan Truswell explains, “To achieve in our sports takes commitment, application, responsibility and lots of determination. These awards are not only an ideal way to celebrate this hard work but to remind volunteers and parents about the great things that our sports offer young people and why their continued effort and support is so worthwhile.” From the nominations received each of the RYA’s 13 regional committees will select a regional winner, and all winners and their families will be invited to the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show for the official awards ceremony. Nominations will close on 12th January. Nominees must be under 19 years of age at 31st December 2014. For more information and to make your nomination visit www.rya.org.uk/go/youthchampion

A new international qualification aimed at raising the professional standards and supporting the professional development of tall ship sailors has been launched. The International Sail endorsement Scheme is the result of two years work by experts from Sail Training International and The Nautical Institute. Steven Gosling, Training and Quality Manager at the Institute, says, “The scheme marks the creation of the
first international proficiency standard against which square rig and fore-and-aft sailors can be independently assessed and endorsed.” The scheme also provides owners, operators and Flag States the opportunity to raise professional standards in this specialist sector by aligning national schemes with those prescribed by the industry. www.nautinst.org/ises

New route for 2015 solo THE Solitaire is still as ruthless and dynamic as ever, putting the world’s finest offshore talent through their paces over a gruelling month of solo competition. To mark the race’s 46-year milestone, competitors will sail a 2015nm course between three old and two new ports in 2015. Returning to Bordeaux, the Solitaire du Figaro 2015 will start on the 31st May from the village of Paulliac. From Bordeaux a fleet of up to 45 33ft Bénéteau Figaro IIs will
race 461nm to the Sanxenxo, the Spanish town making its Solitaire du Figaro debut in 2015. From here to the Concarneau, the skippers will finish Leg 2 of the race in the familiar French waters of south Brittany. The penultimate 602nm race leg from Concarneau to Torbay will see the fleet once again round the notorious Fastnet Rock off the Irish coast, Lands End, The Lizard and Berry Head before receiving a warm welcome in Torbay as they conclude Leg 3.
FREE!
Echoing the fourth and final leg of the 2013 race, the fleet will make their final charge to the 2015 finish line in Dieppe along the south coast of the UK, but first looping west from Torbay around the Island of Lundy – a 400ft granite outcrop in the Bristol Channel. This year’s British Solitaire du Figaro Rookie’s Robin Elsey, Rob Bunce and Andrew Baker can’t wait to deliver on their potential in the race and hopefully boasting a result the home crowds can be proud of.
THE Finn contest at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne, Australia between Britain’s Ed Wright (pictured), and his friend and former countryman now sailing for Australia, Oli Tweddell, captivated the crowds. Tweddell, the hometown hero, was not surprisingly unhappy about finishing runner-up at his local regatta while Wright, on form in a borrowed boat, had no qualms relegating Tweddell to the silver medal position for the fourth consecutive year. On the conditions Wright said, “The first upwind was really lovely with breeze up to 20 knots, then it dropped out. I was quite upset because when we were out there practising before the start the downwind conditions were epic. In the race I managed to hold onto the lead and cover Oli quite tightly on the second beat, then pulled away in some nice waves. I chartered a boat and the old girl went well

this week…. I think I might take her home with me,” he joked. Meanwhile, the final Olympic class Medal Race for the 10 Laser Radial sailors from the qualifying series went head-tohead in a fast race. Britain’s Alison Young came to the start line with an unassailable point score lead, but there was a good chance of the minor podium places shuffling as the talented fleet took off in fresh conditions. “It was quite a tricky Medal Race we had there,” Young said. “It was pretty light beforehand and then the breeze pumped in and there were pretty big gains on the right hand side. It was quite tense on the first beat,” Young said. On securing a place in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final she added, “It’s a nice way to end the year, or start the season, depending on how you want to look at it. I am pleased about how the week has gone. I will take the lessons from here forward.”

A 1970s fashion faux pas they may be, but to a team of adventurous rowers from Dorset, speedos are standard equipment for a unique charity challenge. On 2nd May 2015, the group will depart from Boscombe Pier, Dorset, in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the oldest Australian Surf Boat to be rowed around Britain. During the course of their three-and-a-half month circumnavigation, a core crew of four will be joined by three auxiliary rowers, assisted on land by several volunteer minibus drivers. Rowing approximately 25-30 miles a day, the guys will camp on land overnight, or take up offers of accommodation from coastal communities. The expedition aim is to raise £100,000, to be split equally

between two charities: The Royal Marines Charitable Trust and Wessex Cancer Trust. Expedition leader, Ellis Hagger, explained how the idea evolved, “We initially investigated an Atlantic row, but the costs were prohibitive. However, thanks to extensive restoration work on our 26-year-old surf boat by local craftsmen, John Clarke and Matt Williams, we realised that we already had a seaworthy vessel.” With Sir Ranulph Fiennes as their patron, the challenge is already attracting lots of celebrity interest. So far, Pete Goss, Helen Glover and Sir Steve Redgrave have all voiced their support. Anyone interested in supporting this unique challenge can visit the challenge website at www.ukcharityrow2015.com
GOSPORT Marine Festival 2015 will be taking place on Saturday 13th June at Gosport’s Waterfront Millennium Promenade, Timespace and Haslar Marina. It is a free community event, showcasing the wealth of on-water opportunities available on the Gosport peninsula and allowing people of all ages to have a go at a whole host of these activities. The Festival will also focus on the young people of Gosport, highlighting the learning and career opportunities within the marine industry on the peninsula. Ben Ainslie Racing and Team Origin, who are bidding to bring back the America’s Cup to the Solent, along with renowned British solo sailor, Gosport’s Alex Thomson will all be taking part. The Festival will also see the inaugural running of the Gosport Peninsula Charity Pursuit – a fun chase around the Solent for yachts of 26 feet or more to raise money for local charities. It won’t necessarily be the fastest crew on the water who will lift the trophy: points will be awarded in a number of categories, including the amount of funds the team raises for their chosen good cause. www.gosportmarinefestival.org.uk

GIPSy Moth IV, the historic British yacht in which Sir Francis Chichester singlehandedly circumnavigated the globe in 1967, will be available between April and October 2015 for charters in the Solent, longer voyages to France and the Channel Islands and event-based charters in Cowes, including Round the Island Race, Panerai Classic and Cowes Week. Gipsy Moth IV set a series of records during Sir Francis Chichester’s voyage, including the fastest round-the-world voyage by a small vessel, the longest nonstop passage by a small vessel, and the then longest single-handed passage. The aim of her 2015 programme is to make the iconic vessel available to the public, raise funds for her upkeep through the private charters and to introduce a new generation of young people to maritime challenges. www.gipsymoth.org
Image: Clipper Round the World
The Clipper Round the World yacht Race will include Australian offshore classic the Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht Race in its 2015-16 global series after a successful debut last year. The RSHyR will form part of the biennial Clipper Race series for a second time. The round-the-world fleet created much interest in 2013 as amateur sailors from over 40 different nationalities competed as part of their 40,000 mile circumnavigation. Clipper Race Chairman and Founder Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who was the first person to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world in 1968-69 says, “We are very excited to include the Sydney Hobart as part of our Australian leg in the 2015-16 Clipper Race series and look forward to submitting our entries when the Notice of Race for the 71st edition is released next year.” In further Clipper news, The Clipper Round the World yacht Race has joined forces once again with Hyde Sails to power the fleet for the historic 2015-16 edition. Production of the Clipper 2015-16 Race wardrobe is well underway at Hyde Sails’ specialist loft, located in
the Philippines, and sail testing is scheduled within the next few weeks in the UK. Each of the twelve Clipper 70 yachts carries a sail wardrobe of eleven different sails including a Mainsail, Staysail, Windseeker, yankee 1, 2, and 3, plus a heavy, medium and lightweight spinnaker. In total, the combined sail area across the entire fleet is 197,616 square feet. To lay all the sails out flat you would need an area the size of almost three Premiership Football pitches. The tenth edition of the Clipper Race starts next summer and will take almost a year to complete. At 40,000 nautical miles in length, it is the world’s longest ocean race, also known as one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet. Uniquely for amateur sailors, over 670 people from more than 40 different nationalities took part in the last race, visiting sixteen ports on six continents on the global race circuit. www.clipperroundtheworld.com

THE NEW WAVE BKA sailors in action on Farr 45 Kolga Credit: Paul Wyeth/RYA
THE British Keelboat Academy (BKA) has confirmed the next wave of Britain’s aspiring young keelboat sailors for the 2014 - 2015 season. Split into three individual programmes - One Design, Inshore and Offshore - next year’s academy boasts some of the most promising new keelboat talent in the country encompassing a range of new and existing squad members. There were over 80 applications for the joint keelboat racing initiative between the RYA and
UKSA, with 50 sailors accepted for the forthcoming season. This is almost double the uptake of sailors from last year’s programme. The BKA is an RYA programme helping 18 to 24-year-old British keelboat sailors learn the necessary skills and make industry contacts that will enable them to develop their sailing within the area they would like to pursue. www.britishkeelboatacademy.org / @tweetbka
NEW BOATS FOR ASPIRING YOUNG SAILORS
TWO aspiring West Wales sailors have been awarded their very own boats, donated by the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST), the official charity partner of the RYA OnBoard programme. Amelia Grant-Jones from Fishguard and Joshua Price (pictured) from Haverfordwest were among thirteen youngsters who were selected from over 70 applications after competing in the RYA Zone and Home Country Championships. Twelve-year-old Joshua, who sails at Solva Sailing Club, was delighted when he found out he was being gifted the use of his own Topper boat. Joshua explained more, “I love being on the water, on my own seeing how far I can go before I capsize. I also enjoy the responsibility of looking after the equipment and making sure I have the boat set up to the best of my ability.”

A team of international scientists have discovered that the smallest member of the Mary Rose crew – the ship’s dog – was a he, and not a she as previously believed. Recent developments in DNA analysis have found that Hatch was a young male dog, most closely related to modern Jack Russell Terriers, with a brown coat.

The two lifeboats launch for the last time from the lifeboathouse
IFDS EVENT DATE SET FOR 2015
ALL AT SEA JANUARY 2015 SCARBOROUGH RNLI reached the end of an era in December as the 74-yearold lifeboathouse was officially closed. Watched by hundreds of people, the landmark was commemorated with a service led by lifeboat chaplain Pam Jennings and attended by RNLI personnel, supporters and mayor Pat Marsburg. Bagpiper Barry Conkerton played a lament, Amazing Grace, as one of the longest serving crew members, Peter Billingsley, lowered the RNLI flag. The two lifeboats were launched for the last time from the lifeboathouse, which will be demolished to make way for a new one to house a new lifeboat. The station closure coincided with the 60th anniversary of the ECJR disaster. The onlookers included Sally Bullamore, youngest daughter of coxswain Jack Sheader, one of three crew who died on duty in a ferocious storm exactly 60 years previously. RNLI standard bearer Ross Tyson and Rachel Jenkinson, who witnessed
the tragedy, were present. The weather couldn’t have been more different. On 8 December 1954, enormous waves, a howling gale and driving rain conspired to create fatal conditions. However, on 8 December 2014, the sea was calm and the sun was shining, so the scene was far lighter as lifeboat crew solemnly laid wreaths on the sea, in the same place and at the same time – close to the harbour mouth at 4.15pm – that the ECJR capsized. Dozens of people, including many lifeboat crew who weren’t on the lifeboats, watched in silence from the piers. Flags on the lighthouse, the allweather lifeboat and a few other boats flew at half-mast in memory of the ECJR trio and all other lifeboat crew who have died in service. The lifeboats then berthed in the harbour, where they will be based until the lifeboathouse is built. Two portacabins will be installed in the east corner of the harbour as a temporary base for the crews.

SAILING is one of Great Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic success stories, with a World Class Programme that consistently delivers podium results at World and European Championship level, and at the pinnacle Olympic and Paralympic Games. The British Sailing Team’s preparations towards sustaining this success at Rio 2016 are already well underway, with 2014 seeing the first official Olympic Test Event held on Rio’s Olympic waters, and the
team qualifying its maximum number of country quota spots for the Olympic and Paralympic Games at the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander (ESP) and the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships in Halifax (CAN). The RYA has appointed Corbis as its commercial agency to work on securing a title partner for the British Sailing Team in the Olympic and Paralympic Classes. The team is seeking commercial partners to
provide investment towards its ambitious medal-winning plans, according to RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park OBE.

END OF YEAR ISAF WIN FOR BRYONY 13
BRYONY Shaw capped off a dominant week and secured a winning end to her 2014 season with gold at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi. Shaw admitted it had been a difficult year, with a number of near misses in the medal stakes but she was delighted to have ended the year as she had begun it – with a gold medal to add to her victory at the Miami World Cup regatta. The Beijing bronze medallist led the women’s RS:X windsurfing event from the outset of the four day Final showcase – the first of its kind under the revamped ISAF World Cup series – with her gold topping the British Sailing Team’s tally of four medals, with victory also going to British kiteboard racer Ollie Bridge in the invitational event held alongside the Olympic Classes. Shaw went into Sunday’s final 10-board double points medal race with a comfortable 16 point margin over the second-placed World Champion Charline Picon. Knowing that she could finish no worse than silver, the Weymouth-based sailor controlled her French rival to finish the medal race in second place and take the overall event victory. After a testing three months for Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre, Abu Dhabi provided a silver lining. The pair made the most of their competitive return to win the medal race by 21 seconds and elevate themselves into the medal spots after starting the day in fifth. In the men’s RS:X windsurfing event, Nick Dempsey consolidated his third place heading into the final day, finishing fifth in an incredibly tight finale to secure bronze and his
second international podium finish of the year. There was also a tense finish in the 49er medal race with an on-water protest seeing the French boat disqualified. John Pink and Stuart Bithell managed to boost themselves from fifth into the podium spots with a third place in the medal race to leave the Emirati capital with bronze. Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign won the 49er medal race to end their regatta in fifth overall, with Dave Evans and Ed Powys in eighth. Elsewhere in final day action, Lucy Macgregor and Andrew Walsh narrowly missed out on the podium spots in the Nacra 17 class, finishing fourth overall behind a clean sweep of French boats on the podium. Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves were second in the multihull medal race to end their first international event in seventh place. A fifth place for Alison Young in the Laser Radial medal race saw her finish in fourth overall, while Nick Thompson and Ed Wright ended their respective Laser and Finn events in seventh place. SHELLEY JORY-LEIGH
To find out more about the F4-s Class and Ben visit www.powerboatgp.co.uk
Ben Morse might only just be out of his teenage years, but he has already amassed more records and championships than many powerboat racers coming to the end of their careers. IN a Powerboat Racing Career spanning eleven years one 20-year-old has notched up numerous achievements including 2 World Bronze Medals, 2 European Bronze Medals, no less than 12 British Championship Titles along with 2 World Speed Records and 9 British Speed Records with his latest probably being the highlight of his career so far in a fantastic finish to a great season. I caught up with Ben Morse from Lancashire so he could tell me more. Ben got involved with Powerboat Racing following in his grandfather, father and uncle’s footsteps and has grown up around powerboats from an early age. His mum and dad met at Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club in St Helens; his mum, Ruth, was a ski club member whilst dad, Adrian, was a young powerboat racer when they met. Just weeks after his 9th birthday Ben began testing for the Junior Powerboat Racing class as it was then known J250. By 2005 he had claimed his first double British Championship title winning the J250 British RYA Championship and J250 British Sprint championship.
Searching for a Golden Star The following four seasons saw Ben claim a further 3 British J250 Titles and 4 British Sprint Titles also seeing him claim European Bronze Medals in 2007 and 2009 and UIM World Bronze Medal in 2008. MOVING UP At the age of 16 Ben moved up to the newly introduced GT30 Class securing the British Championship in his first year of adult racing and setting the World and British Speed record at 56.73mph; not bad for a 30hp engine. By 2012 Ben had turned 18 and had made the transition to catamarans and was competing in the newly introduced F4-s
Class. It made its first outing at Records Week securing a British Record of 67.98mph. Ben was Powerboat GP British F4-s and F4-s Sprint Champion in 2013 and a new World and British Speed Record of 73.21mph followed in November 2013. Ben also took another hull to Coniston and managed to secure a record of 99.07mph in the O850 class less than a mile per hour off the coveted 100mph mark. IN SEARCH OF A STAR 2014 saw Ben once more secure the Powerboat GP F4-s Sprint Championship in a faultless performance and remained unbeaten in the Powerboat GP F4-s RYA
Championship to clinch the double championship. Ben and the rest of the BRM Racing team then headed to Coniston for the 44th Coniston Records Week in search of the elusive Golden K7 Star and the 100mph record. So on a misty Tuesday morning in November Ben took his place in the pile of competitors waiting to make Powerboat Racing History. The rules of Water Speed Records are that the speed of the craft is the average speed measured over 1km on two consecutive runs (one in each direction) within 20 minutes of each other.
Ben’s first pair of runs gave him an average of 99.49mph. With a return run speed of 101.63mph news came over the radio that one more run could see Ben as the youngest ever member to be inducted into the exclusive K7 Club. In impeccable transition against the ticking clock Ben’s boat was taken out of the water and returned to the course start boat ready to claim his record. Ben didn’t disappoint. With his third run he’d done it; he set a new National O.850 Record, taking the middle pair of runs average speed to 100.05mph, Ben obtained a Gold K7 Star and became the youngest member ever to be admitted into the K7 Club with the perfect end to an awesome season. BIG PLANS AHEAD Ben would like to thank all his team who help him achieve his goals in Powerboat Racing and knows without the assistance from all the team he wouldn’t have been able to accomplish his successes every year, especially the support and tireless effort from his dad and mum, Adrian and Ruth. Ben is already gearing up for the 2015 Powerboat GP Championship where he will be aiming to defend his British titles to make it three in a row. But Ben will be even more eager to get back on the water during the winter for practice as the team’s attention looks once more to international competition as they aim to compete in the World F4 series, which has rounds in France, Italy, Germany and the UK plus the European Championships in Poland.

SAILING HOLIDAY SPECIAL
The perfect setting for a sailing holiday. Credit: Josh Pitt
My Big Wet Greek Holiday By Georgie Corlett
Like many who enjoy messing about on the water, we’re fans of finding more than one way to get afloat. A beach club holiday with Ocean Elements at its specialist windsurfing centre in Vassiliki, Greece was the perfect way to indulge that passion. NOt only does the centre boast over 120 new-this-season boards, it also has a fleet of dinghies, including a number of performance craft. Use of all of this fantastic kit (along with a fleet of kayaks and Stand-Up Paddle Boards, as well as mountain bikes) together with RYA windsurf and dinghy sailing instruction is included as standard in all Ocean elements’ beach club holidays. topping all this is the enviable location of this particular resort; the sweeping indent of Vassiliki Bay unvaryingly lies calm until after lunch, then is pommelled in the afternoons by ‘eric’, a localised wind
that hurtles daily down the hillside to produce a cross-shore breeze that’s reliably force 4+. Situated directly on the beach front, Ocean element’s relaxed, traditionalstyle Surf Hotel offers value-formoney accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis, with all rooms enjoying an inspiring vista over the pool and gardens and across the bay. For those travelling as a family, Ocean elements offers a warm and affordable welcome at all its centres, with Kid’s Clubs included in the price of the holiday, and sailing and windsurfing junior coaching also available.
Dinghy indulgence
with a team of energetic watersports instructors on hand ready to launch, on request, the dinghy of your choosing, we spent plenty of time powering across the bay in lasers, or pushing the RS100 to its limits with kite run after kite run. As competent dinghy sailors, we certainly got our fix, indulging in a blast across the bay most days before lunch. Meanwhile, novice and improver dinghy sailors were being put through their paces each morning with RYA tuition in a variety of dinghies, including the Pico, RS Feva, topper 16 cat, RS500 and laser Bahia. with three hours of tuition over five days available for every guest, it was great to see the dinghy sailing and beginner windsurf students gaining confidence over the week, and venturing further afield as the holiday went on.
full of enthusiasm, our group’s instructors, laura and Doug, tailored our programme daily according to the wind and to the group’s requests. After a short time at the beginning of each session spent on shore, with our coaches imparting their advice and demonstrating expertly on the simulator, it was time to hit the water and for us to put theory into practice... Or at least, that’s what we were attempting. light wind days saw us refining first fast-tacks, then heli-tacks, then duck-gybes and the ultimate achievement – a follow the leader behind Doug, imitating all of these moves in sequence – with hilarious consequences. Once the wind filled in, the focus switched to promoting planning – as one by one, we struck our ‘super seven’ poses to maximise mast foot pressure and whizzed off down wind. After hitching a lift back up wind with one of Ocean elements’ safety boats more times that we could count, it was time to gather the group together in the shallows for another briefing, this time – thankfully - on how to control your board at speed. with some tentative foot strap work and plenty of positive encouragement from the instructors, improvements began to show.
Chilling out
each exhilarating afternoon was topped off by celebrating achievements over a well-earned beer at the hotel’s small beach bar, as we sat and watched the pros make the last of the sunshine. As for eric, he quite often had a few hours left in him! For us, however, needing to re-charge the batteries, a 20 minute saunter took us most evenings into the nearby
village of Vassiliki. Here, a number of restaurants ring the quaint little fishing harbour, offering a choice of seafood and traditional greek fare, or substantial pasta and pizza dishes. the restaurant that won our custom on more than one occasion was Penguins, with the excellent fish platter and local wine. Ocean elements sets aside two or three nights each week when guests can opt to have dinner at the hotel. themes for each vary from week to week, and can include charity casino nights, meze meals and pool Olympics – a great way of getting guests and staff together for a fun and easy evening. the final night of our trip saw a delicious BBQ served, followed by lighthearted presentations from each of the groups and their instructors. After a few drinks to mark the end of a highly enjoyable holiday, a little dutch courage went a long way. laughter rang late into the night as everyone swapped their tales and highlights of what had been a great week.
Winning formula
with a two-week Stay and Sail holiday enjoy a beach club holiday in week one, followed by a yacht charter in week two – starting at Vassiliki in May 2015, we think Ocean elements may have hit on the absolute winning formula for those who want to enjoy more than just one way of getting afloat on holiday. A Stay and Sail package will also be available at the company’s Nautica Bay Beach Resort in Porto Heli, greece for 2015; whilst the popular and picturesque Pelion resort of Club leda has been designated as the company’s ‘dinghy specialist centre’ for next season. www.oceanelements.com

As well as windsurfing there are dinghies, kayaks and paddle boards. Credit: Josh Pitt
After lunch it was our turn to take up our lessons. Afternoon sessions for improvers and advanced windsurfers were run in four groups, divided up by ability and to an extent, ambition! with no more than twelve students in each group and two instructors to each, the groups spanned intermediate to advanced, and covered everything from beach starts and basic harness work, to carve gybing and popping. What better place to learn to sail than under the glorious Mediterranean sun or even further afield. there are many sailing holidays that combine with a RYA course such as Competent Crew, while others choose to learn to sail on a flotilla holiday with the instructor on board. However, this option isn’t just for beginners. RYA Day Skipper is another popular course to take abroad too. it’s a great way to get the whole family or group of friends learning together and having fun at the same time.
Here’s a taster of where you could be headed in 2015:
CLASSIC BOATS
For something a little different, we love the idea of a sailing holiday on a tall Ship or wooden boat. there are worldwide destinations available ranging from Cornwall to Patagonia, plus incredible wildlife expeditions.
AROUND THE UK
In Europe: greece, Croatia, italy, turkey, France, Spain, Sweden In the Caribbean: Cuba, Bahamas, Florida Keys, St lucia, Antigua, Martinique, grenada, Belize, British Virgin islands In the Far East: thailand, Seychelles, tahiti, Malaysia In North America: Canada
So far we’ve mentioned sailing holidays abroad, but there are countless holiday spots around the UK, both inland and around the coast, where you can sail your own boat, charter a boat or perhaps it’s time to take the plunge and invest in your own boat and sail the beautiful waters around the UK before heading overseas in the years to come.

A holiday that combines sailing and exploring the local area is a popular choice. Many sailing holiday companies will happily arrange both aspects of the trip to include the land and sea activities and accommodation.
Here’s a taster of where you could be headed in 2015:
Perhaps you would simply like a wonderfully relaxing holiday without the sailing or learning? Choose a crewed yacht and step aboard to meet your professional skipper and crew who will take you and your family on the trip of lifetime.
CREWED YACHT
SHORE TO SAIL
For experienced sailors chartering a fully equipped yacht, catamaran or cruiser is often the best option as there is an unbeatable sense of privacy combined with the freedom to explore the area at a pace to suit all those on board. Your Day Skipper is needed and, depending on the location, an internationally recognised certificate of competence for the skipper such as RYA international Certificate of Competence or RYA Day Skipper Practical.
if the idea of a bare boat yacht charter sounds fun, but you like the social side of meeting new people or travelling with friends, then a flotilla could be just the ticket. You are the skipper of your boat, but sailing with a group of other yachts headed by a flotilla skipper. Spend the days and nights with the others or doing your own things; whatever takes your fancy that day. this is the best of both worlds in many ways, and is especially popular for families. Sometimes you can also have a professional skipper on board for a few days or the whole week.
In Europe: turkey, Sardinia, Corfu, greece, Croatia The Caribbean: St Martin, Antigua, St lucia & grenadines In the Far East: thailand
SAiling holidays are fantastic because they offer so many choices, not only in destinations, but boats, experience levels and activities too. Put together, this means you can create the perfect holiday for you and your family. Here we take a look at sailing options for 2015 and a selection of the destinations you might find yourself enjoying.

GETTING STARTED
The sailing holidays base at Sivota
FAMILY FLOTILLA Hilary Satchwell Robinson decided that her adventurous and energetic boys, aged ten and seven, had reached an age when they should spend a week on a Sailing Holidays’ yacht together as a family. She had not been on a flotilla holiday since her teens and her husband Richard never had – so would they enjoy it? THE first decision was to take grandad with us. My dad is a long time sailor and his skills and agility at the ripe old age of 71 always come in useful. My husband and I are Day Skippers and our ten-year-old is super-keen with dinghy
qualifications, but we don’t sail as regularly as we would like. The plan was that three generations on holiday together would make for a more relaxing and fun trip. The second decision about where to go was easy. The southern Ionian is one of my favourite
There was plenty of time for everyone to enjoy the water
places. We booked the first week of the school summer holidays. We were keen to make sure the slightly less keen on sailing seven-year-old Henry didn’t find it all too much. The Ionian is ideal. A flotilla would mean he could spend time with other children.
“The Sailing Holidays team managed that all-important balance between being helpful but leaving you to unwind very well” ARRIVING AT LEFKAS
The Sailing Holidays team made sure everything ran smoothly
We started the week on Lefkas, or Lefkada as the Greeks call it, at the Sailing Holidays base in the protected harbour of Sivota at the south of the island. It has a little beach, restaurants and small shops for essential provisions. The Sailing Holidays team managed that all-important balance between being helpful but leaving you to unwind very well. It’s always disorientating arriving on a new boat, in a new place, with a lot of new people, but it all went well. The mainsail on our yacht needed changing but it happened almost without us noticing.
sailingholidays.com
®
The plan for the week was reasonably fluid. The laid-back but secretly well organised lead crew - host, skipper and engineer - planned where best to spend each night depending on weather, plans of other flotillas and for our flotilla to meet for drinks or the evening meal. We were well briefed each morning on the sailing area and harbour for the night, giving us an excuse to have breakfast ashore to avoid washing up. There was no forced activity, some people socialised more than others, some sailed more than others, and some needed more or less support. We visited a variety of harbours and anchorages from the tiny Kioni, to the cosmopolitan Fiscardo and the more developed Ag Epheumia. Some of us have enjoyed sailing holidays in the Southern Ionian for more than 20 years yet we still went to places that we had never been to before. We had great weather, enough wind to sail every day except one and enjoyed Greek hospitality and food.
THE GENERATION GAME
The three generations together worked really well. Having another adult on hand with energetic children is always a good. Grandads and grandchildren behave better when they are together. There was enough space on our 39foot yacht, the sailing was good fun and we swam in amazing crystal clear bays. As a bonus ten-year-old Arthur became even more keen on sailing hooray! We all liked the balance of having other people on the flotilla to socialise with. The kids liked meeting others of their own age to play and share Minecraft chat. One of the things I enjoyed most was not having to decide where to go for the next night. That was decided by the lead crew and we happily went where we were told. Having someone to tell you where to berth and catch your lines just adds to the appeal of this kind of family holiday.

Relaxed flotilla sailing holidays in the sunny Greek Islands
Top tips for three generations on a flotilla
Flotillas are a great opportunity for children to learn about sailing and have lots of fun
● Choose a boat with more than one ‘heads’ and enough cabins so no one needs to sleep in the saloon. ● Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to sail every available hour of the day. While our boat was at one end of the range and was first into harbour nearly every day, it’s important to find out what will keep everyone happy. ● Children were happy as long as they got plenty of time to swim off the boat and to push grandad into the sea, and we all enjoyed the sailing. ● Make sure that you visit the amazing bays around the Ionian for a lunchtime break and swim. Don’t leave it too late if you are away during the school holidays as many others will have the same idea! FURTHER INFORMATION The family chose to travel with Sailing Holidays. Prices start from £495 per person in October half term, £695 per person in May half term and £715 per person in school summer holidays. That includes flights, transfers, the yacht for the week, diesel, mooring fees, linen and towels and the unobtrusive assistance and guidance of a friendly flotilla lead crew. www.sailingholidays.com info@sailingholidays.com 020 8459 8787

sunny times ahead EvEryonE’s sailing experience and crew is different, but with a wide selection of sailing destinations around the world it’s easy to find the perfect sailing holiday. It only takes a few questions to help guide you to your next sailing adventure!
Complete noviCe and starting out?
start off with an ryA course in Gibraltar, Turkey or Greece and gain official recognised certificates. Alternatively take an instructor on your yacht and learn to sail on flotilla with the whole family.
getting baCk in to sailing?
Looking to book your next sailing holiday but don’t know where to start? Jonathan Shears, General Manager at Nautilus Yachting, gives an expert insight into booking the right holiday for you.
With the help and advice of a lead crew you need less experience for a flotilla holiday compared to a bareboat charter. If you are introducing the family to sailing holidays then the beautiful Greek Islands or Turkish bays are a great way to get them hooked.
experienCed and want to explore?
If you have a Practical Day skipper or ICC certificate then the world is your oyster and you can charter a yacht independently (bareboat). For example, Greece, Turkey and Croatia offer a great choice of destinations and different sailing environments.
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
SAILING HOLIDAY SPECIAL
something different?
Have you tried the Eastern Mediterranean, Caribbean or Tropics? I have done a few ‘off piste’ charters to some extraordinary places. I frequently get reminded by my crew of sailing around the active volcanoes off sicily or the numerous Caribbean bays with trips ashore to lively beach bars.
Just the two of you?
A bareboat holiday does provide privacy and the chance to get away from everything. However, if you want to feel part of a group then a flotilla sailing holiday gives you the social aspect in the evening but the privacy of your own yacht during the day, a popular compromise.
sailing with friends?
It’s never hard to persuade friends to come on a sailing holiday, especially when you mention the chance to explore off the beaten track and enjoy dinner in a waterside taverna under the stars. As nautilus yachting offer a wide selection of destinations, you can get away from it all or hit the local bars and nightlife. I would suggest the Ionian or Fethiye for the former and Athens or split for the latter.
sailing holidays your way
sailing with the kids?
With younger children a flotilla holiday tends to give shorter passages and lots of swimming! During the school holidays there are usually other kids in the flotilla. If you have been sailing for a while, charter a yacht ‘bareboat’ and discover your own favourite bay. Alternatively you can still join a flotilla and meet up with other families in the evening.
want to sail in winter?
During the winter months the Caribbean enjoys constant warm tradewinds at 10 - 20 knots, which provide excellent sailing and temperatures at a balmy 30C. If you haven’t sailed in the Caribbean then I would recommend the British virgin Islands with its perfect sailing conditions, sheltered passages, white sandy beaches and amazing snorkelling in warm, crystal
clear seas. If you have done the BvI then what about Antigua or the Grenadines?
looking for thrills?
My top recommendations for exciting sailing would be the Cyclades or Dodecanese in Greece, which provide longer passages between the islands and stronger winds offering more challenging sailing conditions. Alternatively there’s the Italian islands of sardinia, sicily or Elba.
been everywhere?
For somewhere different I would recommend the Far East. Thailand is a brilliant sailing destination for confident travellers. Phang nga Bay is a protected, very dramatic cruising area. www.nautilusyachting.com 01732 867 445

SAILING HOLIDAY SPECIAL
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO SAILING?
Apart from Vassiliki, of course. The south coast of Britain takes some beating, particularly when there’s a decent South Westerly and a build up of some long waves. Before I moved to Greece I particularly enjoyed racing off Beachy Head, as well as the entire area between Studland and the IOW.
Q&A WITH SIMON MORGAN
Wildwind has been offering sailing holidays in Greece since 1988. We chatted to founder and MD Simon Morgan about his highlights and inspirations.
WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU TO SET UP WILDWIND?
I’ve been sailing all my life – my Dad, Tony, won a silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics sailing a Flying Dutchman with Keith Musto, and we spent our holidays following him around the European race circuit back in the day. I first started racing Cadets, and then after a few years off the water I bought a Hobie 16 and found myself working in London but spending every spare ‘windy’ minute rushing off to the South coast (Highcliffe SC) to go sailing. After a few
years of this and competing in ridiculous races such as the Hog’s Breath 1000 (727 miles non-stop day and night in a Hobie 16) I took a sabbatical from work, drove across Europe in a VW campervan with a cat to this place called Vassiliki that I had been reliably informed was windy every afternoon. It was. I spent a month ‘hanging out’ on the beach before deciding to jack it all in and start a sailing holiday company for people who really enjoyed the fun and exhilaration of sailing in a pretty windy spot.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHT AS MD OF WILDWIND?
It has to be hosting the Hobie 16 European Championships at Wildwind
WHAT’S COMING UP IN 2015 FOR WILDWIND?
ABOVE: The conditions at Vassiliki are fantastic for sailing
in Vassiliki in 2001. There were 118 Hobie cats racing in our beautiful bay and with five Gold fleet races held in winds from 25-40 kts it was an amazing spectacle. Though, come to think of it, having a 75 year old retiree who’d sailed Enterprises all his life come sailing with me on a 16, crew brilliantly, and then turn around as we were reaching the beach and say “Simon, I’ll remember this as the best day of my life” takes some beating too.
TELL US WHAT MAKES A WILDWIND HOLIDAY SO AMAZING.

on holiday?) and the staff are not only supremely professional but a lot of fun and dedicated to making sure our clients have a brilliant time both on and off the water. We even offer our unique ‘Healthy Options’ package for anyone not quite so keen on watersports but who might enjoy our yoga, Pilates and other fitness classes, as well as cycling and exploring the beautiful island of Lefkas. One other thing also stands out – conditions in Vassiliki and our staff competence mean that we can really fast track beginners and give them a taste of what it’s like to be sailing at a high level from Day One.
We’ve just launched our winter sailing paradise location on the beautiful Indian island location of Mauritius. I’m also hoping that I might get some more personal time to go racing again - I’ve young kids of four and five and they do take a fair amount of my time. It would be nice to run the odd race from time to time, even if I’m now in the GrandMasters class.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
Sir Ben Ainslie, obviously, and anyone else who has put in the time and commitment to race in the Olympic arena. Also Paul Elvstrom, who raced with his daughter in a Tornado in the Olympics (still theoretically possible for me!), and a special shout out to the outstanding sailors from nations not as well funded as the UK who go on to win medals. Sofia Bekatorou from Greece is a good example. www.wildwind.co.uk

SAILING THEN AND NOW
SAILING HOLIDAY SPECIAL
Follow the sun For families choosing their next sailing holiday or international racing teams heading to the next event, the huge leaps in international transportation have put even the most far reaching sailing destinations within our grasp.
AFTER the schooner America carried the ‘Auld Mug’ back to the United States, a whole new aspect of yachting was about to start. The Deed of Gift that managed the racing for the America’s Cup stipulated that any challenger had to make it to the event ‘on its own keel’. This placed a huge overhead on the challengers as they struggled to make the Atlantic crossing, and then had to change into race mode for the racing. In time, this requirement was eased, but by then yacht racing was rapidly developing into a truly international sport. Now the destinations for the top teams were not just the eastern seaboard of the USA but the Mediterranean and then even further afield to Australia and New Zealand. To get the yachts to these distant locations was a major undertaking that involved the boats being shipped as deck cargo. At the same time, dinghy sailing was racing to catch up as competition for the International 14 quickly spread to the US, Canada, the Caribbean and again, Australia. However, just like their bigger brethren, the dinghies would have to take their chances travelling as deck cargo on a freighter. A SHRINKNG WORLD Since the end of WW2, the world has been rapidly shrinking and what had been previously considered as exotic and unreachable destinations were suddenly in reach. Moreover, with the advent of containerization and the wider globalisation of business, distant locations became not just reachable, but affordable.
Getting a boat firmly tied down on deck
Transporting boats 1950s style
Loading a boat ready for transporting overseas
This would in turn bring about a fundamental change in the nature of the sport. For the top Grand Prix teams, sailing boats such as the TP 52, the demands of a busy, high profile international circuit see boats packed up and shipped with the ease normally expected of an F1 team. For the dinghies the demands are even greater, as events such as the upcoming Olympics in Rio, require a whole range of boats, plus all of the supporting equipment required by the teams, to be shipped out, then returned, before being shipped again for the next event. At shippers Peters and May (P&M), from their Southampton Headquarters,
the trends in the international transporting of boats of all sizes are showing a year on year increase. When the summer circuit in the Mediterranean comes to a close, in the past the yachts would have been laid up, but now they are packed up and moved eastwards to enjoy the fabulous sun, sailing (and not a drop of rum) in events such as the ‘must do’ Antigua week. Of course, some yachts still do make the passage to the event with either the owner or a delivery crew aboard, but increasingly this option is being seen as less than cost effective, both in terms of overall cost, not to mention the wear and tear that a long passage can make on a boat.
Some of Team GBR’s boats on their way to help the team win more medals
SHIPPING FAMILY BOATS With companies such as P&M offering a ‘turnkey’ solution for owners that can see boats shipped to the Caribbean (St Thomas, BVI) in just 12-14 days, another trend is seen with family boats being taken to these great locations for what is a fantastic sailing holiday. Family and friends then fly out, are reunited with their boat where they can enjoy an unrivalled sailing experience. Likewise for the dinghies, it is no longer just our top stars and Olympians who are able to revel in the pleasures of sailing at locations that in the past were just colour pictures in the sailing magazines. With the benefits of shipping boats in containers, careful packing can fit a number of boats into a single ‘box’ and thus bring the cost down to an ‘easy to do’ point (for the World Championships in Brisbane, some clever loading saw twelve International Contenders, each one 16ft long, stacked in one 40ft container; it was as cheap for the boats to make the trip as it was for their helms to fly!). With the Fireballs having recently been to locations as far apart as Barbados and Thailand, the 505s about to set off for South Africa, the Moths heading for Australia and the Contender fleet already
saving up for a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip to California in the spring of 2016, the question is no longer one of ‘can you go’ but ‘when will you start packing?’. Peters and May, who, with over 30 years of experience in the field, are the market leaders in the shipping of boats (not to mention being the proud sponsor and shipper of boats and gear worldwide for our Olympic Team) see one of the key drivers to ‘following the sun’ as being the growing appetite people have for adventure. At the same time, there is an ever present need for them to be helped to achieve this and now, with over 4,000 boats shipped each year, to race locations right across the globe, it looks as if more and more of us will be packing up, shipping out – and swapping this cold, grey, wet and windy weather for champagne sailing in the sunshine. Seems a good idea to me! If you are interested in shipping your boat abroad, Peters&May can be contacted at www.petersandmay.com

ATTRACTIONS FOR 2015
We have come to expect great things from the London Boat Show, and the 2015 event is impressing us yet again with three new attractions. Control the Rain gives visitors the opportunity to use their body to actually control the weather. Super sensitive sensors will detect body movement and the rain will cease or start to fall from the sky. The 4D Experience is also incredibly popular with visitors who will feel all manner of nautical conditions from the icy chills of the arctic to the heat of the tropics. In 4D this is a truly unique and memorable experience. The final new attraction is The Lab, which features Solent University’s new and innovative Whisper Catamaran. Designed and built using state-of-the-art yacht design and engineering facilities at Solent’s Warsash Maritime Academy and city-centre campus, the catamaran’s technology has already attracted attention from world-class sailors during sea trials this summer.
Old favourites are also returning. This show is all about getting involved and there’s no better place to do this than the Watersports Pool, which is packed with various activities such as canoeing and kayaking. There are free taster sessions, all under the watchful guidance of the experienced team at Rockley Watersports. The popular RYA Active Marina is back offering free workshops ranging
The official charity partner for CWM FX London Boat Show 2015 is the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. from VHF radio operation to diesel engine basics. These provide a fantastic opportunity to learn and get handy tips from expert instructors. It is, however, recommended that sessions are pre-booked due to high demand. Email Bookings@which-marina.com or call 01784 223 816 to book a space. As a bonus, City Sailing are giving away an Emergency First Aid Kit at every presentation.

Sir Ben Ainslie
Sir Ben Ainslie and his Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) team are one of the star attractions at the CWM FX London Boat Show. Jo Grindley, Head of Commercial, Marketing, Communications and Events for Ben Ainslie Racing, explains further, “BAR has plenty of activities going on during the event; an interactive stand, which offers a real taste on what will be on offer at the Visitor Centre at our new HQ when it opens in Portsmouth in June 2015, the launch of our new team merchandise range and chase boat plus specialised talks from some of the sailors and designers. It’s a great opportunity to meet some of the team and find out more about our British Challenge.”

THE Bite team head east, overland, to the delightful halls of ExCel this January, looking at food options for the weary exhibitor and enthusiastic visitor to the 61st CWM FX London Boat Show. We need to shrug off memories of Borsch n’Tears, School Dinners and all things Earls Court, and find new entertainment in the City’s dynamic Docklands via the DLR! Not much of a hike this time, and not perhaps the weather to jump on a Boris bike, but we have the clean and bright DLR line that drops us right outside ExCel and the inspiring Emirates Telecabin to fly us to the moon. After a long day at the show it’s good to get outside and breath in some frosty air whilst deciding which way lies supper. On-site there is the reliable Italian Zero Sette and the newly opened Neighbourhood, Unit R4 at the Western Gateway, that looks very promising. Top dishes being their burger or filet mignon, it’s a nice open space with pale wood fittings and worth a punt I’d say. We will split the area into four short hops: Canary Wharf (10 mins), the O2 (10 mins), Greenwich (25 mins) and Limehouse (40 mins direct).
CANARY WHARF
Amazingly there are restaurants down the line at Canary Wharf that will send a complimentary taxi for your party, and many other outlets will give you a free glass of fizz when you book using the secret code London ExCel – got it? There’s much more info here, and a jolly useful map, but always check the deal when booking: www.excel-london.co.uk/ media/153274/After%20Hours%20Leaflet%20May%202014.pdf A couple of stops west on the DLR stands Canary Wharf, with a wealth of eating and drinking options as you fight your way out of the double doored tube. Sadly the skating rink will have melted by the time the boat show comes to town. Our favourites:
1
best bites There was really only one place to go this month; with all eyes in the boating world focused on London for the boat show that’s exactly where we headed.
02 - The Emirates Air Line is a short walk from ExCel. It’s
clearly signed, and it flies you over the Thames with stunning views, touching down behind the O2. It’s worth checking if there are any shows on whilst you’re visiting, but I can’t pass a Byron Burger without trying their latest special, this time it’s the Cheesemas of course. It’s the best burger chain in the UK, in my opinion, but 7Bonedive, in Southampton are the best in Hampshire. If you miss the O2 but go to Greenwich the Byron is on Greenwich Parade, near the pier.
GREENWICH - (25 mins. DLR to Poplar, change for
Lewisham, get off at Cutty Sark) We love some of the old pubs near the Cutty Sark, and our favourites are the Mitre, 291 Greenwich High Road, or the Gypsy Moth at 60 Greenwich Church Street, only a few doors from my best bakers Peyton & Byrne, 20 -22 Greenwich Church Street. It’s a good breakfast stop if you park in Greenwich and head over to ExCel. My other top breakfast stop would be Borough Market, but expect to get to the show a little later than planned.
LIMEHOUSE - Finally to Limehouse, as
2
those canny Ocean Cruising members may well be staying here for the Show, if they booked their cabin early. An easy, direct run along the DLR with a fine eating pub at the end of the line, yes, Gordon Ramsey’s the Narrow (pictured below) is popular with boat show bods, with great views over the Thames and a fine crunchy beer battered fish n chips to boot. Those wanting something a little spicier may chance their arm with the Raj Boy, close to the tube in Commercial Street and popular with the crazy long distance RIB boys, take that which ever way you will…
3
Iberica ( 1) – top tapas & good wine. Gaucho – this carnivore paradise is also at the O2. We love the steaks and bullfighter ambience, oh le! They will both send a taxi to ExCel and collect you. When booking quote ExCel London and confirm numbers, but note there’s a two hour limit on sittings at Iberica. Roka (2) – if you’re feeling Japanese plus there’s a complimentary glass of champagne or cocktail. The Gun (3) - is a short step from Canary Wharf. Head towards the Thames and it’s at 27 Coldharbour; better still ask them to send a cab for you. This is a very well known London pub with great views and food. If you are booking a group you may well negotiate a glass of Champagne on arrival too. Use your special code…

NOT TO BE MISSED... FIND YOUR SEALEGS
■ Stand B436 Salterns Brokerage, the UK’s sole importer and distributer of Sealegs Amphibious Ribs, are exhibiting these craft for the first time at London. The Sealegs system consists of motorised, retractable and steerable wheels that are fitted to specially designed aluminium boats to provide a fully integrated package. They are powered by an on-board 24hp Honda driven hydraulic power-pack providing a variable speed of 0-10km/h both forward and reverse. A Sealegs boat can be driven from a storage location and into the water - all with the occupants staying in the boat and remaining dry. The boat is then used as normal. When approaching the shore the Sealegs powered wheels are lowered to the seabed and the boat is driven onto dry land.
CLIPPER GO LARGE
■ Stand A400 Clipper Marine have a large presence at London with a dedicated combined sail and powerboat stand for the first time. Three powerboats are being launched including the Bavaria Sport 360 and Sport 400 HT. Also on the stand will be three sail boats form the Bavaria range. Richard Hewett, Director at Clipper Marine said, “We were delighted with the success we enjoyed at the recent PSP Southampton Boat Show. We secured more sales at the Show than we have for the past seven years with sales across all model sizes in both ranges. With the improvement in the market and the changes planned for London, it was an easy decision to exhibit and take a larger presence.”
Sarissa Ribs arrives
■ Stand C464 Premier Ribs are opening the order books for a new range of luxury Ribs under the name Sarissa Ribs. Two models will be available initially: The Sea King 939 Bora which features a stepped hull and The Speedmaster 737 Sarissa, which is a more agile craft given its shorter hull. All Sarissa Ribs can be fully personalised to customer requirements including colour, layout, equipment levels and power output. Renowned Powerboat racer Arran Scott, owner of Premier Ribs, has the distribution rights for Sarissa Ribs for the UK and France and says, “The craft has been a long time coming but it is streaks ahead of the competition in terms of performance, equipment levels, comfort and build quality and I am confident it will be a success.” The first Sarissa Rib to arrive in the UK is on show at London and show visitors will be able to view the Speedmaster model, book a demo ride and take advantage of special show deals.
Pedal Boat
■ Stand E037 David Williams (‘Dad’) built his first Pedal Boat in the 1950s. Dad’s Boats is a family run business manufacturing and selling his design, a unique Pedal Boat that allows two people to face each other and pedal forwards in comfort. The pedal boat is almost entirely hand made in Norfolk.
Sportjet 520 Launch
■ Stand B410 Williams Performance Tenders is launching the second model in the Sportjet range at London. The Sportjet 520, designed to thrill any keen water skier or wakeboarder, combines the safety and fun of a jet drive with the high performance of the BRP Rotax® 4-TEC 150 engine.
Light enough to be trailed behind a car or easily stored on the platform of a yacht, the Sportjet 520 has huge appeal to both standalone boaters, as well as owners looking for a tender.
With very little effort you can travel through the water at a good walking pace, so it’s good exercise, good for the environment, quiet and sociable. Dad’s Boats are exhibiting their Pedal Boat at London for the first time and to celebrate they are offering their first three boat sales at a special price of £4,995. The price after the show will be £7,495.

Before the days of canned foodstuffs and refrigeration the ship’s meat was supplied soaked in brine and stored in casks or barrels. The fat, which became hard, stuck to the edge of the barrel but in a hungry ship this was never allowed to waste and the cook would have to scrape the barrel, hence to use the very last, and sometimes the inferior.

NEW KIT
FOR YOU AND YOUR BOAT
Just Beet It… If it’s good enough for the England Rugby Team and many sailing pros the BEET IT SPORT Shot must be worth a try, and so the All At Sea team couldn’t resist a taste. After all a natural boost to strength and endurance is always welcomed, whether on the water or in the office. Made with 98% beetroot juice and 2% lemon, to reduce the sweetness we’re told, it tastes pretty good. With one 70ml shot recommended daily it’s a quick and easy drink to keep in your sailing jacket or on board. We also tucked in to a BEET IT SPORT beetroot and oat flapjack, which has a natural dietary nitrate content of 0.4g, the same as a BEET IT SPORT shot. We like the 50% oat content as this is a great source of slow release energy; ideal for sailors. We preferred the flapjacks to the drink, but it’ll come down to personal preference. www.beet-it.com

Ranger to Rainbow
Garmin has launched its new GHP Reactor Autopilot Series – its most responsive autopilot on the water. This new kit provides unprecedented performance by integrating a new, solid-state 9axis attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) that yields less heading error and course deviation, reduced rudder movement and lower power consumption, thus providing a smoother ride and overall better experience. The GHP Reactor Autopilot Series will replace all current autopilot models2. Prices start from £1374.99. www.garmin.com
Ranger to Rainbow The J Class yachts is a detailed account of the development of the J Class yachts, primarily from 1996 when author, David Pitman, first became involved with the rebuild of Velsheda. He was Secretary of the class for more than twelve years and primarily responsible for the rebirth of the Class, from the launch of a new Ranger in 2002, then Hanuman, Lionheart and finally Rainbow in 2012. It is packed with many technical and sailing images of these iconic yachts. £27 (+P&P) www.strawberrymarketing.com

RYA FOCUS
The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
BY EMMA SLATER
THE RYA REVEALED Next July the British public will pay attention to sailing in a way it doubtless hasn’t done for a while; well at least since London 2012!
AS Sir Ben Ainslie’s vision to ‘Bring The Cup Home’ gathers momentum with the announcement of the first America’s Cup World Series event in Portsmouth, the one man who has the profile, success and respect to get even the most hardened nonsailor interested in some racing boats is
helming sailing into the mainstream. Now rewind 30 years and that man was just an eight-year-old lad in an Optimist, about to start taking his first competitive steps through the RYA Youth and Olympic programmes, on a then unknown journey to becoming a global sporting icon. Ben’s
story is understandably the most well told, but even when the marks are not so obvious, the RYA’s fingerprints in lobbying, training, advising and campaigning across all areas of boating, often under the radar, mean you only have to dust the surface lightly before the RYA’s role is revealed.
FROM LITTLE ACORNS…. WEAVING A BOATING WEB Think about how many different types of craft you might see on a day on the water. Dinghies, yachts, small powerboats, large motor cruisers, RIBs, personal watercraft, and if you’re inland, add canalboats into the equation too. The RYA in its many varied and differing ways looks after all of this, and arguably most importantly, the people who drive or sail them. As the national governing body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating, it’s the RYA’s job to ensure the interests of all boaters are represented and fought for at national, European and international level and in
partnership with multiple authorities and agencies. But what does that actually mean in real terms? In essence, every person who goes on to the water,
whether for the first time on an entry level training course to a Yachtmaster with many years of experience, knows the RYA has got your back. So how?
FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT!
Today, our coastal waters and inland waterways face increasing pressure from competing commercial, environmental and leisure interests. In addition, national security, public safety and progressive European and International regulatory initiatives, together with economic pressures, are more significant in today’s political agenda. It is therefore vital that recreational boating interests are represented effectively to ensure that Government, in all its forms, takes full account of our activities when balancing competing interests. The RYA provides a robust, articulate and intelligent voice to represent recreational boating. It might be something as local as a club’s lease dispute with a landowner to offshore wind farms and marine licensing, but the RYA lobbies to make sure that everyone involved in the decision making process - legislators, regulators and other authorities - understand and take account of recreational boating.
SAFE HANDS
You can’t have missed the ‘Think - Wear Your Kill Cord’ campaign around marinas, training centres and clubs, not just in the UK but abroad too over the past twelve months. This is just one example of the RYA taking the lead on and influencing improving safety standards within the marine sector. Another such instance is the RYA Safety Advisory Notice. Launched by the
Did you know more than 240,000 people in Britain and internationally complete RYA Training courses, both practical and theory, through a network of more than 2,500 RYA Recognised Training Centres in over 47 countries every year? That’s a lot of people gaining valuable knowledge and skills to take afloat with them. There are over 100 RYA training courses meeting all recreational and professional boating needs, from kids learning the ropes for the first time through grassroots programmes like RYA OnBoard to the highest international standards for commercial boating, recreational safety and navigation, coaching and instruction. RYA training schemes are internationally recognised for setting the standards for safe, enjoyable boating, while at the same time providing access to, and pathways for, the huge variety of careers within the
marine sector. Although practical training remains at the heart of improvement and excellence, getting people engaged in training, and giving them opportunities to learn new or refresh existing knowledge at home and online, is becoming increasingly popular. In fact, the RYA’s Short Range Certificate online course recently clinched two international E-Learning Awards - Best Use of Mobile Learning and Best E-learning Project in the UK Private Sector.
CHOCOLATE BOX
Sir Ben Ainslie has been the poster boy for the RYA’s Racing pathway, inspiring youngsters through the Junior and Youth squads to his former British Sailing Team teammates alike, for over 20 years. The RYA’s Youth and Junior Racing Programmes are the bedrock of Britain’s Olympic success. Yet this is just the tip of the racing iceberg. Match racing, keelboats and team racing are all nurtured as activities to give sailors alternatives to enjoy the other fiercely competitive aspects of the sport, while this World Class drive for excellence resonates through all areas of Race Management, Race Officials and coach education and professional development too.
Shipping Minister with the full backing of the Department of Transport (DfT) and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), it brings together key safety issues, including those arising from incidents in the past year, into one practical digest. There is rightly an enduring tradition of self-reliance and individual responsibility within UK recreational boating. The best bit of safety you will always have is your brain, not a gadget!

MINI MASTER CLASS PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
THE PERFECT ANCHORAGE
While it’s very difficult to find the completely perfect place to anchor, there are many factors to take into consideration when choosing a good anchorage.
AN ANCHORAGE SHOULD PROVIDE: SHELTER FROM ALL DIRECTIONS A typical ‘perfect anchorage’ might be a horseshoe-shaped bay encircled by cliffs or hills, ensuring good shelter from all wind directions, unless it is blowing straight through the entrance, which would drive in swell and make the bay extremely uncomfortable. Be aware that wind often swings through 180 degrees during the night, when a strong

to move on as soon as possible to seek an alternative anchorage. This may be caused by the wind swinging onshore. However, swell is unpredictable and can roll in during the night if you are unlucky. The best solution is departure at dawn.
GOOD HOLDING
Things to consider when choosing a good anchorage: ■ Shelter from the wind ■ The weather forecast in case the wind direction changes ■ The nature of the seabed shown on the chart. Mud and sand are better than rock or shingle ■ Space behind the boat ■ Whether there is enough room to swing when the tide turns ■ Check on the chart for a recommended anchorage ■ Look in the pilot book for advice or warnings ■ The boat must be outside any channel used by other boats, including if it swings ■ The depth of water. It may be necessary to work out the minimum depth of water in which to anchor to be sure that the boat will not ground at low water ■ Once secure, monitor your yacht’s position in comparison to the other vessels and hazards including the depth for the duration of you stay

sea breeze changes to a light land breeze. Anchoring in the lee of high hills or mountains may appear to provide the best possible shelter, but not when a katabatic wind (from the Greek word katabatikos meaning ‘going downhill’) accelerates down the hillside at violent speed!
FLAT WATER
Ideally, your anchorage should be as flat as a mill-pond. Any swell will make it extremely uncomfortable. If the boat starts rolling, things seldom get better. Best advice is
33
Anchors are incredibly effective at holding a boat, but need a good holding. The best surfaces are sand or mud, which allow the anchor to dig in deeply. Rock and weed or shingle will provide a less secure holding. Never drop an anchor on coral.
tide changes. An anchorage with the bows facing into the wind and tide should provide flat water and good shelter for the crew in the cockpit, but the boat may start to rock and the cockpit may get draughty when the wind blows against the tide. “Some of my most enjoyable nights on the water have been at anchor with friends. This article is called a ‘perfect anchorage’, yet we all know it is unlikely to be absolutely perfect, however if you spend some time considering the points covered here before arriving at your anchorage and use a check list to select your spot it is likely to be an enjoyable stay with no unexpected surprises,” comments Vaughan Marsh, RYA Chief Instructor, Sail Cruising.
Your boat should have room to swing through a 360 degree arc, without hitting anything under or on top of the water, including nearby boats. All boats will swing as the wind or tide changes, though yachts and powercraft tend to swing at a different speed. If there is insufficient space to swing through a wide arc or full circle, the solution may be to attach a stern line to the shore, which will hold the boat in a fixed direction. This is useful when there is limited space in an anchorage and is common practice in Baltic countries like Sweden and Finland. Remember, though, if you are secured differently to the other vessels around you, your swing will be different to theirs.
TIDAL EFFECTS
If you anchor in a tidal area, you need to be sure there will be enough water under the keel at low tide. The exception is if you wish to ‘dry out’ with a bilge keel yacht, lifting keel yacht or shallow draught catamaran. Tidal flow may also affect where you can anchor in a river or estuary. Every six hours, your boat will swing through 180 degrees as the

FACILITIES
THE marina was built in 1993, followed in 2001 by the building of nineteen business units in the marina car park area, accommodating marine businesses and a bar and restaurant. In 2008 E pontoon was extended to create a 94 metre superyacht hammerhead, with depths over 6 metres below chart datum. The maximum boat length is 45 metres with a total capacity of 650 berths. The berths are all modern, purpose built with electricity and fresh water available. There is a boatyard (run by Seaway Marine) for motorboats in the car park and Sealift2 on F hammerhead provide a trouble free and competitively priced lift out option. Customers at Haslar Marina benefit from 24 hour manning, free WiFi, excellent washrooms, close proximity to chandleries, supermarkets and an NESTLED inside the sheltered Haslar Creek, just a stone’s throw from the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, proudly sits Haslar Marina, with its 650 berths and 20 on-site marine related business units; two of which are restaurants: Hardy’s at Haslar and Trinity’s at The Lightship. Haslar was the first of Dean & Reddyhoff’s Marinas (D&R). The opportunity for the site arose in 1992, shortly after John Dean and Richard Reddyhoff had parted company with MDL, who had bought Dean & Dyball’s marinas. Both John and Richard realised the great potential for the Haslar Marina site, in terms of its sheltered position, proximity to London and prime position in the eastern end of the Solent. Work began constructing Haslar Marina in 1993; dredging the large mud flat where the berths now sit and reclaiming land to the west of the marina to locate the onsite
services, car parking, boatyard and public slipway. By the end of 1993 the marina just had A – D pontoons in position, which filled immediately as word spread about this new marina in a prime position in Gosport. Demand was such that they carried on and built the marina around to M pontoon (its current footprint), including a large 170m wave screen and brought in The Lightship, which has created a feature that is well known throughout the south coast. Haslar has thrived since, with a constant stream of visitors from home and abroad, but it mostly remains a very popular permanent base for many customers wishing to keep their pride and joy in a secure, 24 hour, well positioned marina. It is testament to the service provided that over 75% of Haslar’s Berth Holders have been there for four years or more and over 100 boats are still with them after 20 years.
abundance of marine trades and, most of all, a crew of very friendly and professional staff. Visitors are made most welcome and are provided with free electricity, WiFi and water. Most find themselves gravitating to Hardy’s at Haslar or Trinity’s at The Lightship. Both of these on-site restaurants are owner managed and visitors and berth holders alike are guaranteed that their heart and soul goes into everything they do. Liveaboards are welcomed at Haslar Marina. They are viewed as part of a village community and can be very helpful to the marina as another pair of eyes through the quieter winter months. Haslar also has its very own Yacht Club, melding power and sail with style and enthusiasm. For more information visit their website for great social events and friendly rallies.

PORTSMOUTH Harbour is historically the most heavily defended harbour in the world. Many of the fortifications are still there to be seen in the Solent and the harbour itself. Fortunately they no longer have a chain pull across the harbour entrance. All has not been peaceful in the harbour over the years, however, with the Civil War seeing Cromwell’s Roundheads in Gosport exchanging canon fire with the Royalists in Portsmouth in the 17th Century. For pubs and restaurants you need look no further than Hardy’s at Haslar and Trinity’s at The Lightship. Hardy’s offers sumptuous seasonal menus and is always a popular haunt with the local yachtsman. Trinity’s also boast excellent menus, but its main draw is its stunning location where customers can sit on the top deck watching the traffic in one of the country’s
ACCESS
HASLAR is easy to reach by road; just follow the A32 from junction 11 off the M27. By rail it is simply a case of taking a four minute ferry ride from Portsmouth Harbour station, arriving at the Gosport Ferry terminal, which is just adjacent to the north entrance of Haslar Marina. Arriving by sea is straight forward, given that Portsmouth Harbour has a dedicated small ships channel on the
CRUISING
IN terms of day cruise destinations from the marina, depending upon tide and whether you are power or sail, your choices are excellent; head east to Chichester or Langstone Harbour, nip over to Cowes for lunch or head into Southampton Water towards Hamble or Southampton itself. There are great lunch stops and picnic potential at all those options. When it comes to weekend cruise destinations from the marina Bembridge has rather more to offer these days, with the much talked about Beach Hut making it a good weekend destination; beach, walks and a sheltered berth for the night. Or head to the Western Solent and choose Newtown Creek for its wildlife, Beaulieu River for its beauty or Yarmouth and Lymington for their many charms.
PRIME LOCATION
PEOPLE choose Haslar for it’s prime Solent position, fast links to London, proximity to Gunwharf and the vast array of restaurants, Royal Naval museums, cinemas, clubs and shopping that provide ample entertainment for those wet days. Its position is also what makes this marina unique, along with the green Lightship that D&R refurbished to incorporate a bar and restaurant, nine shower rooms and a laundrette. Most of all, at around 650 tonnes, she offers a great deal of wave protection to the vessels inside and sits as a shining beacon (actually the shiny bit was been decommissioned at the end of ‘80s) when directing visiting yachtsmen into the marina.
ABOVE: The Lightship is well known throughout the south coast
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS “I’ve been berthing my boat at Haslar Marina for the last eighteen years and have seen the marina develop into the superb facility that it is today. The staff have always been really friendly and will always do everything they can to help. Not only that but it must be the closest marina to the Solent, plus it has great views across to the Naval Dockyard; there’s always something interesting to see. Finally, as a founder member of Haslar Yacht Club, I have been delighted with the continued support we have had from Dean & Reddyhoff in the development and running of the club.” Brian Dunton, Princess 50
busiest harbour entrances, whilst supping sundowner cocktails. Haslar is lucky enough to have Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons and soon to be Aldi in walking distance. There are two large and well-stocked chandleries (You Boat and Arthurs) within a five minutes walk. Visitors are spoilt for choice around Haslar Marina, whether they are shopaholics (who will find their way over to Portsmouth’s Gunwharf Quays) or have keen interest in seafaring history. The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is just opposite Haslar Marina, whilst the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is just a short ferry ride away. Both sides of the harbour have red brick pathways leading you around the foreshores, whilst if pedal power is preferred, you will be served by a number of cycle ways linking Gosport to the beaches of Stokes Bay and Lee-on-the-
west side of the harbour entrance. This will put vessels on the Gosport side when entering the harbour. Boaters should be aware of the drying Hamilton Bank on the west of the approach channel into the harbour. When approaching the marina visiting yachts can call the marina 24 hours a day on VHF Channel 80 or telephone 023 9260 1201.
For longer distance cruise destinations power may well progress further than sail and would make the Channel Islands and France in a week. Sail boats may head for a relaxed trip down to Poole Harbour, and westwards to Portland, Weymouth or even across stunning Lyme Bay to Torquay, Brixham and Dartmouth. Time and weather permitting you may manage that trip over the Channel to France. There are a few points to be aware of when cruising in these areas. Bembridge Ledge is well marked and it’s always worth watching the tide through Hurst Point. Bramble Bank in the middle of the Solent should be avoided as well as the submarine barrier between Southsea and Horseand Fort. It is also advisable to monitor Channel 11 on your VHF to keep up-to-date with ferries and larger traffic entering and leaving Portsmouth and Southampton.

“I have had dealings with Haslar Marina and Dean & Reddyhoff since the marina was built and have a berth there. I have nothing but praise for the good management, polite and knowledgeable staff and high standard of maintenance throughout that time, which is the hallmark of the organisation. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone seeking a berth for their boat. Capt Tim Norman- Walker, Moody 33

IN THE DRINK
One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.
BY PAUL ANTROBUS
Après-ski
LOCALISED WINES
The small volume of grapes is grown on the lower, very sunny slopes in distinct pockets of vineyards separated by towns, mountains and lakes. This leads to a variety of localised wines, usually identified on the label by a white cross on a red background logo or shield, the flag of both Savoie and Switzerland. 75 per cent of the grapes grown are white, the favoured being Jacquère grapes. For reds it’s Mondeuse grapes. Both white and red wines are characterised by their floral aroma and fresh apple and citrus flavours. Grocery shops in the ski villages will have plenty to choose from. Buy it locally to enjoy there and bring some home as it will not be found in our supermarkets.
Add the extra edge to your Alpine skiing holiday with Savoie wines.
SPECIALISTS
I have found one specialist wine trader (others may exist), Yapp Bros, based at Mere in Wiltshire, just off the A303 north of Shaftesbury and en-route for West Country sailing. Their shop stocks a small range of four Savoyards. They recommend the white Savoie Cuvee l’Orangerie 2013 from Jacquère grapes as a delightful apéritif wine ‘clean and fresh as a snowflake’, 11 per cent at £10.95 a bottle. Two other whites currently in stock are Dom de l’Idylle Vieilles Vignes 2012, also from Jacquère grapes, £11.95 a bottle, and Dom de l’Idylle Roussette Cuvée delivering a ‘russet apple and conference pear bouquet and elegant dry finish’. The red is Domaine de l’Idylle Mondeuse 2012, delivering bright berry scents and savoury red fruits flavour, 12 per cent at £12.25 bottle. All Savoie wines will go well with cheese raclettes and charcuterie platters. And, despite being a feature of winter skiing, they go well as a summer wine, too, especially for cold buffets.

MANY yachtsmen love a ski holiday in winter, possibly because skiing has similar characteristics to sailing: in the fresh air, powered by natural elements and hurtling along on the edge of control with a wipe-out broach always likely. And, just as when sailing in Greece or the Caribbean, skiing can offer interesting local drinks not easily found in mainstream distribution back home. If you’re on the Alpine slopes from say Chambéry to Chamonix, the local white and red Savoyard wines will add that little je ne sais quoi to your holiday. The Savoie wine region is a mountainous area south of Lake Geneva and the France/ Switzerland border. It’s about half the size of Wales, but the vineyards cover only about 1,800 hectares. The location and geography define the Savoie wine character: fresh and crisp white wines and translucent reds with sharp berry fruits taste notes.

SAVOIE SPECIALITIES
Savoie was an independent Duchy until 1860 when politicians in France and the newly formed Italy agreed it should become part of France. The Savoyards value their historical independence and are proud of their wines, cheeses - such as Reblochon and Beaufort - and Jambon de Savoie cured hams. The supermarkets are full of local delicacies. Look for those carrying the white cross on red shield crest of Savoie.
