SB&RIB I WELCOME

SUMMER LOVIN’

What do you enjoy about boating? What is it that compels us to devoutly ignore family members and instead lavish our boats with a level of attention Paris Hilton would shy away from? We could take the romanticised view that we are harkened to the water by the feisty mistress that is the sea, a force both beautiful and terrifying, calling out to be tamed… and so on. But that really just means we like playing the skipper and driving our boats. Putting the throttle down and feeling the boat respond to your touch is an immensely enjoyable moment – and that satisfying sensation is what the good chaps at MRL have taken it upon themselves to enhance. Have a look at the review of their newest craft, the Stingher 800 GT (page 54). This is a RIB so enjoyable to helm that we had to make use of a crowbar and an entire barrel of roast chestnuts to prise chief tester, Alex Smith, away from the steering wheel after the test. If however you are watching your money fly down the fuel pipe at a rate of knots then you might want to look at the EVO 750 on page 46. This is a boat that can cruise at twenty knots using just seven litres of fuel per hour and has an all in towing weight of one tonne, allowing it to be transported by a range of small cars. Don’t believe me? You’ll be able to try the boat for yourself at Southampton Boat Show (first look, page 32), with fuel prices continuing to rise, it’s certainly food for thought.

Finally, as some of you may know, we have recently moved offices down to Swanwick and naturally there are a few new faces in the team. One chap (not pictured for certain reasons) revealed to us he had never once stepped on a wakeboard, had never dared to water ski and thought barefooting was a form of square dancing. So naturally we decided he should try to learn all three - in a single day - and told him his job depended on it. How did he get on? Is his future with Sports Boat and RIB safe? Read on to page 96 to find out.

This selectively bearded ex-yottie has a fondness for wakeboarding, a love for speed and a healthy disdain for corduroy trousers.

Sadly, our sales beacon of loveliness has decided to move on to pastures new. Good luck Michaela, you will be missed!

He has a name that sounds like a seedy chat line, but Guy’s passion for production sees him working around the clock with no extra pay.

Managing Director, Designer and chief nanny to the CSL team, Rich is a wearer of many hats. Which is lucky, because he’s got no hair.

skua’s new ribquest Skua RIBs is still a relatively new name in the market, having only been around for two and a half years. But in that short time, the company has come on leaps and bounds, culminating in the recent announcement of their successful acquisition of big name competitor, Ribquest. David Brown, Managing Director of Skua said: “The acquisition of Ribquest has allowed us to rapidly increase our market share. The strong brand and rigorous quality standards which Ribquest use to build their RIBs, will go hand in hand with the production processes we already use at Skua. We have employed the old 10 I SB&RIB

team from Ribquest and are looking to increase their numbers shortly.” So what does this mean for Ribquest? When David Brown was asked if any plans were in place, he replied “well, we are looking to update the Ribquest range. A new console is to be added and we are looking at a moulded sun deck for the larger models. We are also in the process of building our first 9m cabin RIB too.” Both Skua and Ribquest will be at the PSP Southampton International Boat show, but look out for a test of Skua’s RB6 RIB in the next issue. www.skuaribs.com

HAIL THE NEW PRINCESS For the first time in over ten years, British builder Princess Yachts will be releasing a sub-forty foot sports cruiser – the V39. A boat that Princess claim will ‘redefine the standard for her size category.’ Fitting into their V-Class range of sports yachts, Princess has said their new

vessel will be ‘fast, agile and spacious’. Details are a little scarce at this point but the new boat will be powered by Volvo D6330 engines (standard fitting) and sport a ‘unique hull design’ that should ensure the V39 has a quick transition to the plane. We have no details whatsoever about what makes the hull unique at this point, but Princess claim it will make the ride economical with a highly efficient cruising speed. More details as we get them. www.princess.co.uk

RYA FOR IPAD The RYA has announced that from 17 September, you’ll be able to download a selection of RYA publications to a host of Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch) with the new free ‘RYA Books’ app, available from the App Store. The application needed to download the books is both free and available now. Those who download it now will be given access to taster versions of books but will have to wait until the 17 September to be able to download full publications. Steen Ingerslev, RYA Publications Manager explains more “this is something we’ve been looking into ever since the news broke of the very first iPad and it gives us the opportunity to take our publications to the next exciting level. We will start with embedding animation and video content but with the rate that technology advances, who knows where we’ll be in a year.” www.rya.org.uk/go/ebooks

There’s now another way to keep up with all the latest news from the world of Sports Boats and RIB. Having finally signed up to Twitter, you can now get 140 character instalments from your favourite magazine on the latest goings on, just look for SBandRIB and hit follow.

Fresh from being crowned UIM 2011 World GT15 Champion last month, the extraordinarily talented eleven year old has added ‘GT15 European Champion’ to his growing list of impressive achievements. Ben commented: “I’m really happy to have won the European title, I knew I was in with a chance after winning the World championship, but there’s some strong competitors in Europe so I knew it wouldn’t be easy.”

NEWS IN BRIEF THE BILLION DOLLAR HOAX In the last month, reports emerged of an unnamed Malaysian businessman splashing out on a cool £3 billion super yacht, which used over 100 tons of gold in its construction. Oddly enough, the story proved to be a hoax - but we can still dream…

USED RIB SHOW

A new boat show is set to debut in 2012. The ‘National Used RIB Show’ will be based at MDL’s Sparkes Marina on Hayling Island and will open its doors on the 30th March. Over seventy RIBs will be on display, a large percentage of them being second hand. RIBs will be displayed both on the water and ashore, giving the public the opportunity to test some of the boats. Entrance and parking to the 2012 show is free. More details: www.usedribshow.co.uk

sad end for regional boat shows After 10 shows held over a number of years, both the North and South Wales boat shows have been cancelled and put up for the sale by the current organiser. The news comes just days after the latest event, the North Wales boat show, held in Bangor at the Vaynol estate took place. Talking to Sports Boat and RIB about the shows, organiser Ben Sutcliffe remarked that he had received “virtually no proper support from local councils or government, and this year several companies who promised to be at our shows but didn’t attend either, I’m afraid the few spoil it for the many who have done well. Sunseeker London wanted to come back in 2012 and launch their new 38 footer. “I owe a debt of thanks to several companies who have been there right from the start, at every show, come sun or, mostly, rain!” The shows, websites and data are all for sale. A full review of the show is on page 84. www.bensutcliffemarine.co.uk

CHANNEL QUAKE

On the 14 July, it was confirmed by the British Geological Survey that an earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was recorded, its epicentre approximately 85km southeast of Portsmouth. Various reports came in from those in the area who felt the slight tremble of the earthquake, the force of which left loose items rattling slightly – as if a large vehicle had just driven by. Dr David Kerridge, BGS Director of Geoscience Research, published on the Survey’s website that “this is the largest earthquake in this area, within 25 km, since a magnitude 4.5 event happened in 1734.” More details: www.sportsboat.co.uk

PICCOLA BUNCH A new online shopping service with a different has just started trading. Aiming to be an asset to boaters and others in pastimes where storage is limited, Piccola specialise in providing ‘individual, miniature, and handy smallsized packs of practically everything’. Set up by Mhorag Macpherson, the site currently boasts stocks of over 530 products of food and drink items, household products, baby products, toiletries, fragrance and pharmaceutical products. Mhorag said “the goods we sell are perfect for anyone who has problems with storage, refrigeration and waste, so it’s ideal for sailors, campers, holiday makers and for the home. How often have you had to throw away a jar of jam or pickle because you couldn’t finish it before it got too old? All our preserves come in small sizes so you can enjoy a new taste every time with no wastage”. Customers can buy individual items at a time (from 2p onwards) but the standard delivery charge of £3.95 per delivery (by courier that takes 3-5 working days) means it would be more economical to buy in bulk. www.piccolaonline.co.uk

Tetra Boats has announced a new partnership with US electric engine maker, Minkota. Producing a range of inflatable tenders, Tetra Boats will now be available to all customers with the option of electric outboards and propulsion systems. Managing Director, David Williams said “we can now supply an environmentally friendly engine to accompany all of our inflatable tenders from our smallest and most economical E230 Eco tender

Commenting on the company’s continued involvement with the show, Gareth Lumsdaine, Suzuki ATV and Marine Sales and Marketing Director commented: “The Boat & Caravan Show gives us an ideal platform to show customers our range of 2.5hp - 300hp four stroke outboard motors and drive sales through our dealer and boat builder network. The Suzuki Power Pool worked well for us this year as it enabled us to display the products on the water, even though the show is indoors.” www.suzuki-marine.co.uk www.boatandcaravan.co.uk

‘Double Up Big Air’ contests, which will feature at both boat stops. Remaining dates on the calendar are as follows: Sep 17 - West Midlands Waterski Centre, Tamworth (boat) Sep 24 - JBSki, Chertsey, Surrey (cable) Sep 30 to October 1: Quayside Wake & Ski, Mytchett, Surrey (boat)

scorpion’s new serket Scorpion has announced they will be showcasing their new RIB, the Serket 87, at the Southampton International Boat Show. Coming in to replace the Serket 85, the new craft will be 8.7 metres long and will have an optional a T-Top bimini as well as a sun pad, integrated rear deck, picnic table, generous storage and a payload capacity of 2800kg. There is a choice of standard fitted engines - either a pair of Mercury Verado 200hp, or Suzuki 175hp. Both options deliver similar performance and are reportedly well balanced with the RIB. Other options are available by request. Prices start at £66,500 excluding engines and VAT. If you want to see the boat in person then head over to stand C038 at the Southampton show. A first look at the Southampton show can be found on page 32, with details of new boats coming next issue. www.scorpionribs.com
