Sadly, daydreaming is in crisis. We’ve lost the ability to do nothing at all. / Hélas, l’art de rêvasser est en crise. La capacité de ne rien faire du tout est en péril.

Creativity experts like to talk about the three Bs—the bath, bed and bus—as places where great ideas are born. Their theory: When we’re daydreaming or distracted—staring out a window or lathering our hair—our prefrontal cortex relaxes, allowing our brains to generate ideas that they wouldn’t otherwise.

Sadly, daydreaming is in crisis. Smart phones, though liberating in many ways, have an unfortunate side effect: We’ve lost the ability to do nothing at all. Now, riding a bus, even lying in bed, has become prime time for skimming headlines or reading emails. It’s a boon to productivity, but at what cost?

According to the participants in this month’s Conversation (page 40), filling every idle moment with Tweets and pings may be setting us up for burnout—or, at least, underachievement. No company understands the value of downtime better than Google, whose “20 percent policy” encourages employees to spend a day a week on self-directed projects. We explore the company’s culture with a tour of its Kitchener headquarters (page 22; behind-thescenes shots above)—a heritage building owned by our publishing partner, Allied Properties REIT. And finally, to affirm that Block is not run by a cabal of anti-smart phone Luddites, we present Derek Shapton’s Portfolio (page 32), shot entirely with an iPhone.

If, as you read this winter issue of Block, you find your mind wandering, we encourage you to follow it. There’s no telling where it might take you.

Les experts en créativité aiment parler de trois endroits où naissent les grandes idées — le bain, le lit et l’autobus. Leur théorie? En rêvassant — soit en regardant par la fenêtre ou en se lavant les cheveux — le cortex préfrontal se détend et permet à nos cerveaux de générer des idées qui, autrement, ne verraient pas le jour.

Hélas, l’art de rêvasser est en crise. Certes libérateurs, les téléphones intelligents ont un effet secondaire malheureux : la capacité de ne rien faire du tout est en péril. De nos jours, s’étendre ou prendre l’autobus est devenu le moment idéal pour lire les manchettes ou nos courriels. Bénédiction pour la productivité, mais à quel prix?

Selon les participants de la Conversation (p. 40), remplir chaque moment de détente par un Tweet ou un message pourrait nous mener à l’épuisement ou à une contre-performance. Aucune autre entreprise ne comprend aussi bien la valeur de la détente que Google, avec sa « politique des 20 pour cent » qui encourage les employés à passer une journée par semaine sur des projets autonomes. Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Mélanie Ferraro is responsible for managing the dayto-day operations of a bustling 20-person workshop. Here, she is engrossed in preparation for The Nutcracker, a 300-costume, 175-dancer explosion of tulle that’s been a GBC staple for years.

“In between processing invoices and resolving wardrobe issues, I’ll come here and dye something,” says Ferraro, a 10-year veteran of the company.

Canadiens de Montréal, Mélanie Ferraro est responsable de la gestion d’un atelier très animé et composé de 20 employés au quotidien. Elle est actuellement en pleine préparation pour CasseNoisette, l’explosion de tulle composée de 175 danseurs et de 300 costumes, la pièce phare des GBC depuis plusieurs années. « Entre les traitements de factures et la résolution de problèmes liés aux costumes, je viens ici pour teindre un morceau », dit Ferraro, une vétérante de la compagnie depuis 10 ans. This morning’s job: transform white to blue, courtesy of Dylon fabric dye Kingfisher #33. The material in question is hook-andeye tape, which will fasten the Snowflake costumes’ corsets.

Ferraro’s collaborator on The Nutcracker is award-winning designer François Barbeau, who reimagined the show’s costumes in 1987. Each year, Ferraro and Barbeau renew the costumes, improving them for ease of movement and visual impact.

“Working on the same project every year can seem redundant.

But seeing children’s reactions reminds me how magical it is,” says Ferraro. “Besides, we evolve. The creative process never stops.” / Ce « ici » réfère à un endroit étroit situé au fond d’un espace de rangement rempli de fournitures et de chaussons de pointe. Pour Casse-Noisette, Ferraro collabore avec le designer François Barbeau qui a revisité les costumes du spectacle en 1987. Tous les ans, Ferraro et Barbeau révisent les costumes existants pour améliorer l’aisance des mouvements et l’impact visuel. « Le fait de travailler sur le même projet tous les ans peut paraitre redondant, mais les réactions des enfants me rappellent toujours sa magie, » dit Ferraro. « De plus, nous évoluons. Le processus créatif n’est jamais terminé. »

Many of the costumes are nearly 30 years old and are cleaned only once a year, for longevity’s sake. What is used to fight odours during the show’s run? WHY FUSE WHEN YOU CAN FLOAT? This question is guiding the vertical expansion of 134 Peter Street in downtown Toronto, where an 11-storey addition will soon hover above a four-storey heritage building. Rather than simply build the tower directly atop the 99-year-old property, the building’s owner, Allied Properties REIT, assembled a team of best-in-class collaborators— including Sweeny Sterling Finlayson &Co Architects, Stephenson Engineering and castings supplier Cast ConneX—to design and install a set of stilt-like, cast-steel frames to serve as columns upon which the new structure will rest. Between the old building and the addition, the team has created a striking 20-metre-high atrium. The building is on track to be completed by July 2015.

“The columns have become the signature piece of the space between the three building components where new and old unite, and yet respect and leverage each other,” says architect Dermot Sweeny. “We are embracing the past, and asking it to participate in our future.” / POURQUOI PAS FLOTTER, PLUTÔT QUE FUSIONNER?

You got the basement and cat right, but there’s a window. WHEN ARE YOU MOST PRODUCTIVE? My favourite way to work is to get up, drink coffee, inhale some food and write until I’m hungry again . DO YOU PROCRASTINATE? I do the dishes— because the dishes always need doing, and I always feel righteous for doing them. YOU’RE STUDYING TV WRITING. HOW’S THAT? Any non-mundane experience sparks creativity. Working with my TV cohort is about as non-mundane as it gets. DO SHORT STORIES OFFER MORE FREEDOM THAN NOVELS? WE WERE BOTH PURSUING degrees [Irwin in biomedical engineering;

Jarlath in systems neurobiology] and we happened to be working in this lab space together. We became friends and soon realized there was an opportunity to bring the research technologies we were working with into the world of food.

At I and J Ideations, we do a lot of different projects that let us experiment. One is the room-size edible cloud—this big white box we’re building. In this case, it’s literally a full-body food experience.

We asked: How can you experience food and drinks in a format you’ve never experienced before? So the form we pursued is the cloud.

We developed a mechanism where we could actually form clouds.

You can drink them and interact with them.

We’ve explored solid beverages by infusing flowers with flavours and flash-freezing them. So you end up with a drink which is, at first, a crunchy flower, but as you eat it and it melts, it releases the infusion as well as the flower. Ultimately all of this revolves around play and delight.

Many people view scientists and engineers as non-creative people.

We have a space where we can really revive the concept of the creative scientist. / NOUS ÉTIONS TOUS DEUX aux études [Irwin en ingénierie biomédicale; Jarlath en neurobiologie des systèmes] lorsque nous nous sommes retrouvés dans le même laboratoire. Chez I and J Ideations, nous expérimentons avec plusieurs types de projets. Un de ceux-ci est le nuage comestible — une grande boîte blanche créée de toutes pièces. Cette expérience permet littéralement au corps en entier de goûter à la nourriture. Nous nous sommes questionnés : comment faire pour rendre totalement inédite l’expérience de la nourriture et des boissons? La forme que nous avons choisie est celle du nuage.

Nous avons conçu un mécanisme où nous pouvons réellement créer des nuages. Vous pouvez les boire et interagir avec eux.

Nous avons exploré les boissons solides en infusant des saveurs à des fleurs puis en les congelant rapidement. Le résultat est une boisson sous forme de fleur croquante qui fond et qui libère ensuite l’infusion.

Ultimement, tout cela s’articule autour du plaisir. Plusieurs voient la science et l’ingénierie comme étant de nature non créative. Nous avons créé un espace où le concept du scientifique créatif est ravivé.

when a company that’s busy shaping the future moves into a building that’s more than 150 years old? In Kitchener, Ontario, Google has set up shop in a reclaimed tannery in the heart of downtown—a long way from the suburban campuses of the tech giant’s home base in Northern California.

This historic, brick-and-beam building, once home to endless rows of drying leathers, now houses engineering teams working on products like Gmail and Chrome. The space is a blend of old and new: weather-beaten corrugated ceilings overlook fully equipped meeting rooms, while boardrooms fitted in outrageous, art deco-themed woodwork host state-of-the-art video conferencing screens.

True to its reputation as a nurturer of quirky workspaces, Google has built a whimsical steampunk village within the very real mid19th century heritage zone that surrounds it: the Tannery District, a former industrial complex that has been reclaimed as a high-tech cluster. Even as Google embraces the future—real and imagined—it has stayed true to the building’s roots. / QUE SE PASSE-T-IL quand

Fidèle à sa réputation d’adepte des lieux de travail excentriques, Google a construit un village rétrofuturiste ou steampunk au sein d’une zone patrimoniale du milieu du 19e siècle : le District des tanneries, un ancien complexe industriel qui a été ravivé par la communauté des hautes technologies. “We always try to work with local architects, because they have a feel for the local materials,” says Andrea Janus, Google Canada’s Facilities Manager, who oversees all of the company’s Canadian locations and was deeply involved in the design of the office’s most recent expansion. Janus worked with Kitchener-based architecture and engineering firm WalterFedy on the office design.

The steampunk motif, which pervades the office, was selected

by Google’s engineers, and it turned out to be a fitting choice. A science fiction sub-genre, steampunk imagines worlds where modern technology meets the Victorian era: heavy on steam power, rusted metal, gears, bolts and art deco style. And, as it happens, it’s an aesthetic that fits perfectly with the bones of an old building— many of which Google left visible.

On the building’s first floor, metal elements were deliberately rusted before being installed as slanted roofs of meeting rooms, giving the atrium floor the look of a village lost to time when seen from above. Elsewhere, exposed piping for the sprinkler system is twisted into grotesque but functional forms. Coat and shoe racks, made from vintage brass piping—valves and all—are artfully bent into arcane shapes. An antique fire pole offers an alternate route to the floor below.

Au premier étage, les métaux ont été rouillés avant d’être installés en toits inclinés au-dessus de salles de réunions, et conférant à l’atrium, vu de haut, une allure de village figé dans le temps. La tuyauterie exposée du système d’arrosage a été tordue dans des formes grotesques et fonctionnelles. Les portemanteaux et portechaussures ont été façonnés à partir de tuyaux de cuivre vintage. Une ancienne barre de pompier permet de se rendre à l’étage du dessous.

Still, there’s no shortage of Silicon Valley-style creature comforts: There’s the requisite foosball room; a “Guitar Hero” set-up; a collection of real guitars, plus a drum kit and an electric piano; a pair of nap rooms; and a compact basketball court, which was, pre-Google, a paintball range. (“We had some fun scraping the walls and floors of paint,” says Janus.)

Built in the 1850s, the building itself served as a leather tannery until production ended in the 1950s, when it was repurposed to house workshops and storage spaces. But when downtown Kitchener sprang back to life in the mid-2000s and a succession of hulking industrial spaces were transformed into university buildings and lofts, Toronto developers renovated the building, which has since joined the Allied Properties REIT portfolio.

The office is still a work-in-progress. Google culture is gradually spreading across the space, in the form of steampunkbrown murals, photo exhibitions by employees and a wall covered with caricatures of every employee on site. (When the employee has been there for three years, the caricature gets coloured in.)

“We asked the architect not to fill out every inch of space,” says Janus, pointing out a still-blank wall. Always thinking about the future: That’s the Google way.

ALIENS FROM AN EIGHT-BIT arcade game emerge from a crater in the side of a Miami skyscraper and are pursued by a Hyundai Velostar. Vibrant and colourful images from ’80s pop artist Keith Haring come to life on the façade of the Maritime Hotel in New York’s Chelsea neighbourhood. Scantily clad models dance playfully on the six-storey wall of Tommy Hilfiger’s newly opened flagship store in West Hollywood.

These dazzling public displays are the handiwork of Vancouver-based visual media company Go2 Productions, leaders in the 3D projection mapping technology used for these events. “The big return on investment for a brand is not just the event, but the sharing that goes on through cellphones and social networking,” says Adrian Scott, the company’s 42-yearold president and creative director, from Go2’s office in the Sun Tower building on West Pender Street. Go2’s singular combination of technical expertise and creativity has made it one of North America’s most sought-after companies of its kind.

For Scott, painting images on city towers is a task that marries different aspects of his unusual work experience. Raised in the U.K., Scott trained to be an architect and worked as a civil and structural draftsman before a downturn in the British building industry pointed him in another professional direction.

“As an architect, I was taught how to think in 3D,” he says. “It was a natural progression to get into 3D animation.”

Scott launched Go2 Productions in 2005, five years after he and his wife, Gemma, first visited Vancouver and decided to make it their home. (Gemma recently joined the company as operations manager, when the Scotts’ children, ages five and seven, entered school full-time.) For Go2’s first big client, the poultry company Lilydale, the team produced a cheeky commercial featuring two computer-generated outdoor grills speaking to each other across the fence from identical row houses. Since then, clients have included the Vancouver Opera, Sun Peaks Resorts, Disney and Sports Illustrated.

Last year, the studio’s growth prompted it to move to the 16th floor of the Sun Tower building. In the airy, exposed-brick space, Scott and Go2’s nine full-time staffers’ work stations are drenched in sunlight from the shoulder-high, double-hung windows. At his workspace, 3D animation head Joe Thienbunlertrat, a veteran director, producer and designer of CG and visual effects, is working on a projection map for Simon Fraser University. A couple of desks over, art director Eli Treviño juggles animation work for a New York pregnancy-tracking website, iConceive.com, with a motiongraphic piece for the Fraser Institute. Born in Mexico, where she attended film school, Treviño first came to Canada when she won a scholarship to the Vancouver Film School. The robustness of the local industry has kept her happily in BC. “There are a lot of studios in Vancouver,” she says. “I like healthy competition.

When I see other artists doing great work, I want to be like them.”

According to Scott, the wealth of talent from around the world makes Vancouver an ideal location for a visual media company. Being on the West Coast helps, too. “The head offices are in Toronto, but in Vancouver we’re in the same time zone as California, where we do a lot of business,” he says. Still, this is the 21st century, and geography has limited relevance for a trailblazing company with its sights set on global success. Canada may be home, but the world is Go2’s canvas.

KM I think leaders need to know that for their companies to grow, they need to do less. A leader’s incessant desire to do more—which I think has an evolutionary basis—just gets in the way. So that’s kind of what I like to push against. I love to find people who actually do as little as they possibly can, and what they talk about are team members who are fulfilled, team members who are growing, team members who are setting themselves up for promotions. It’s just a much better environment, one in

which the leaders can actually do what they’re supposed to do, which is think and plan and determine strategies, and come up with great ideas. / Je crois que les dirigeants d’entreprises doivent savoir que pour croître, ils doivent en faire moins.

A lot of the way the mind works is via these sorts of feedback loops. You have the mind that’s constantly agitated, like a red-hot turbine that’s getting spun faster and faster, and it creates these feedback loops where you need more stimulation. It’s like this turbine firing free radicals and stress hormones down into the body and the whole system basically can’t handle it, and it overheats. People have nervous breakdowns or they just get overwhelmed.

So it’s really unhealthy to not ever turn off. That’s why we sleep, by the way. Sleep is one of the ways in which the biology regulates the mind, the brain.

You look at the brain activity during sleep, it’s these big, long delta swells—it’s a huge, soothing cleaning-out. You need the reset button. If you don’t ever get it, you end up in a lot of trouble. / La manière qu’a l’esprit de travailler est souvent par le biais de boucles rétroactives. So if you believe the old notion that we only use 10 percent of our brains, what’s going on with the other 90 percent? All of the data that’s out there suggests that it really is working, and it’s sorting through complex problems. If we take it easy and don’t push ourselves too much, we can make better decisions.

In terms of creativity, it’s really pretty obvious that when you push people and put time pressure on them they fixate on a limited number of solutions— they can’t experience and incorporate a wide array.

trying to move through the next email or the next piece of information that’s flying at us, doesn’t lend itself to very deep speculation or creative potential. Speaking as an artist, with any sort of creative process, all of the heavy lifting is done in the background.

Things have to marinate there before moving forward. YOU COULD CALL PAJAR the ultimate family business. The Montreal

footwear manufacturer, world-renowned for its winter boots, not only employs multiple generations of family members in key positions (including company president Jacques Golbert, son of founder Paul), but also takes its unique moniker from a mash up of the names of Paul, Jacques and Paul’s wife, Rachel.

The Golbert family’s roots are in France, where Paul Golbert grew up as the son and grandson of shoemakers. But Pajar’s boots are a product of its unique location: Montreal, a city as freezing as it is fashionable, at least in the winter months. “Living here, with the weather conditions we have and the lifestyle we all have, we produce what we call ‘performance fashion footwear,’” Jacques says. That means the boots not only look good—they also keep your feet toasty and, thanks to special anti-slip rubber soles, firmly planted on the icy ground.

Everything at Pajar is done in-house, from the pattern-making to the hand-finishing. The waterproofing process includes fusing an internal membrane to each leather piece and taping the nylon stitching to maximize insulation. The Brickell style (shown here), is lighter than most Alpine lace-ups, with an extra-wide tongue to keep snow out—and a touch of flannel to keep it Canadian.

Pajar’s roots in Montreal stretch back to 1963, which means that last year, the brand marked an important milestone: its 50th anniversary. And, unusual among outerwear manufacturers these days, it retains a strong production presence in North America, with a factory located in the heart of Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood, where its Heritage line of premium footwear is produced. (“We’re making a fur coat for your feet,” Jacques says of the upmarket line of sheepskin-lined boots.)

“We try to make as much as we can in Canada because we’re a Canadian brand,” he says. Still, in recent times, Pajar has become an increasingly global company: Over the past five years, it has expanded to more than 40 countries.

The secret to lasting a half-century-plus? “You have to have the passion,” Jacques says. “All my kids and myself, we went to special shoe schools in Milan and France. We learned pattern-making and designing. It’s in your personality.”

EDWARD AND CHARLES GURNEY were iron moulders by trade but entrepreneurs in spirit, and by the mid-19th century, their stove-making business was booming. With a 100-person factory in Hamilton humming along, the brothers expanded to Toronto, opening a retail shop on Yonge Street. In 1872, they went bigger, building a red-and-yellow brick foundry on a then-unpopulated strip of King Street West. The Gurney Stove Factory, designed by Harper and Son Architects, occupied most of a city block, with an adjoining three-storey building completed in 1887.

Today, the factory building is a jewel in the portfolio of its owner, Allied Properties REIT. Its sooty past has been swept away, but the building’s stunning original features—pine ceiling beams, oak floors and a Victorian brick façade—have been meticulously restored. The building hosts a range of tenants, including tech giant eBay, which recently moved its Canadian headquarters into a 30,000 square-foot space on the second floor—200 people in all.

Execs at the company liked the heritage site not only for its size, |but also for its location, amidst what they called a “complete hub of innovation,” between the financial district and the agency world.

And so, the Gurneys’ entrepreneurial spirit lives on.

EDWARD ET CHARLES GURNEY étaient mouleurs d’acier de formation, mais entrepreneurs dans l’âme et vers le milieu du 19e siècle, leur entreprise de fabrication de fours était en plein essor. IF YOU READ architecture and design blogs, you’re greeted by a constant, unrelenting torrent of stories on new skyscrapers from around the world: towers seemingly sliced in half; towers that look like stacks of Jenga blocks or slabs of melting butter. It seems architecture is in a period of fiery innovation.

But what are these big buildings made of ? Under their complex surfaces lies a structure of concrete or steel— materials that were high-tech 100 years ago. Back then, steel opened up the skies to building, and modernist architects were inspired by what Mies van der Rohe called “the bold constructive thoughts” of skinny, strong, steel skeletons.

Now those skeletons are designed on computers instead of drawing boards. But they are still built by people in hard hats lifting I-beams with cranes.

There is, however, a new choice: wood. According to the Vancouver architect Michael Green, the rise of wood as an alternative frame-building material is inevitable. He has imagined 30-storey towers with bones made of timber, and his drawings are uncanny: elegantly designed skyscrapers that evoke van der Rohe, except that trunks of wood have replaced beams of steel.

That wouldn’t be ordinary lumber, but a European invention called cross-

laminated timber—beams and panels made from many smaller pieces of wood, sandwiched together. They can be sculpted into complex forms. And they can, according to many architects and engineers, be made large and strong enough to hold up towers; they’ve been used for nine-storey buildings in Britain and Sweden already.

Because they can be made from softwood, they have a much lighter environmental impact.

Consider this: Steel and concrete create enormous amounts of greenhouse gases.

The production of those two materials alone generates eight per cent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.

Green, as well as engineers and architects in several other countries, are suggesting that timber is the future. Right now Green’s firm is leading the charge with the construction of a seven-storey wood building in B.C. and pushing for much bigger sequels. There are challenges—like any new technology, this one has to be tested, in this case for fire resistance. But the evidence suggests it will be workable.

And then the skies should open up to a new way of building, which will encourage creativity as well as sustainability. Under all those shiny computer-designed façades might be something truly novel.

Puisqu’ils peuvent être construits à partir de bois tendre, l’impact environnemental est beaucoup moins grand.

L’acier et le béton émettent une énorme quantité de gaz à effet de serre. La production de ces deux matériaux génère huit pour cent des émissions de dioxyde de carbone dans le monde.

Green, ainsi que des ingénieurs et architectes de plusieurs autres pays, y voit l’avenir. En ce moment, le cabinet de Green est en train de construire un immeuble de sept étages en bois en C.-B. et espère que ce qui suivra sera encore plus grand. Des défis existent — comme pour toute nouvelle technologie, celle-ci devra être testée, plus spécifiquement contre le feu.

Mais les données suggèrent que cela sera réalisable.

Après, une nouvelle manière de construire s’élèvera vers le ciel, une qui encouragera autant la créativité que la durabilité.
