Clergy Letter from Rev’d Peter Bristow DEPLOYMENT OF CLERGY Since I arrived in 2000 I have treated each of the parishes and churches with equanimity concerning the use of clergy resources. This has meant that each parish, congregation and village community has got to know all the clergy and readers. Following consultations with the Churchwardens and Councils it has been decided that we should take advantage of our present staff resources and use the clergy in a more focussed way to facilitate a period of continuity in each of the parishes and churches. This means that until The Rev. Andy Grant moves at the end of his curacy to be a vicar in his own right (probably later this year) he will look after All Saints, Bramham. Andy will be helped by The Rev. Stanley Menzies who, though now retired, continues to give us unstinting support and assistance. The Rev. Trish Anslow will look after St. Peter’s, Walton and All Saints, Thorp Arch and I will focus on Boston Spa at St. Mary’s. We are hoping that three out of four Sundays we will be celebrating in the churches where we are focussed. I will still hold all the legal responsibilities as vicar, but leave the administration of church services and pastoral management to my colleagues in their respective churches. We will still continue to develop common strategies and policies across the two parishes of the benefice.

THIRD SUNDAY SERVICE About three years ago the former Parochial Church Council of St. Mary’s launched a worship survey of the congregation to try and ascertain what people were thinking about the way we present worship. The survey was generally positive and there were some good suggestions. The staff prepared a formal response and with the agreement of the new Parochial Church Council, decided to translate this into a service formula that would be shared by all the churches in the new parish of Lower Wharfe. Since the end of 2012 this joint service has been held on the third Sunday of each month and has moved around the three parish churches of Bramham, Boston Spa and Walton. It started with a simple breakfast and it was agreed from the outset that it would be family orientated but always be a service of Holy Communion lasting about one hour. We feel it has worked very well, but in recent months the numbers attending from across the churches has declined. This is partly due to two churches already having their own family and all age services. The Village Church Councils and Parochial Church Council have agreed that it should cease after the next joint service which is at Walton on 16th March. The clergy are disappointed to see this service go and we need to remind everyone that in a united parish we must find ways of coming together for worship and fellowship. Continued on page 5

All this may seem irrelevant to Thorp Arch but we are now thinking about organizing a similar Benefice wide service to held when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. A LOCAL FOODBANK ? A few weeks ago a meeting was held at the Methodist Church in Boston Spa to consider whether or not it is appropriate to establish a food bank in this area. Several organisations were present at the meeting which felt that a food bank should be established. Recently Anglican and Roman Catholic Archbishops have criticised the Government’s welfare reforms which appear to be leaving some people with very little. This is a difficult and complex issue. Many people have empathy with the Government’s intentions; all those who can work, should and the benefits system should only support those who genuinely cannot work. The problem is that such a major reform of the system is always going to throw up hard cases, particularly for those already in work but who are paid low wages. It is estimated that there may be up to 250/300 families and single people in the Wetherby area who are struggling to put food on the table. For some time we have been asking every family to put one item from their major food shopping into the boxes in our churches. This currently goes to assist families in York. At our final Third Sunday Service at Walton on 16th March at 10.00am Norma Harrington who is part of the local Food bank Project Team will be speaking about the proposal to establish a local food bank.

CHILD PROTECTION According to government regulations anyone who works with children has to be formally checked. Dr. Jenny Alexander was been our child protection officer for the last three years and I would like to say a very big thank you to her for undertaking this important role. Mrs. Judith Dahlgreen is soon to replace Jenny and Judith’s contact details will be in the next magazine. MANOR CHURCH OF ENGLAND ACADEMY, YORK It has long been a source of contention that children in our local schools have not been able to access a faith based secondary school since St. Aidan’s, Harrogate, restricted its entry qualifications to people in the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds. Some years ago the Manor Church of England Academy moved into new premises in the New Ainsty Deanery at Poppleton, just over the York ring road. Mr. Brian Crosby, Head Teacher of Manor, has recently addressed some of our parents and at our last third Sunday service he gave a most inspiring address on the Christian perspective of education. Manor Academy has a very good reputation and those children who are regular worshippers are now able to apply for a foundation place. PILGRIM COURSE This is a new teaching course whose material has largely been prepared by a number of Church of England bishops. It is excellent as it starts from our own experience and helps us to relate this to the Scriptures. This course runs for a whole year but each of it’s eight sections has just six sessions in a ‘stand alone’ format. Continued on page 7

The second section on the Lord’s Prayer started in the middle of March. The sessions are held in St. Mary’s Parish Room, 7.15 for 7.30pm, finishing at 9.00pm. The third section ‘The Commandments’ will start towards the end of May and dates will be in the weekly newsletter. Please advise the Parish Office if you wish to join one of the future course sections as we need to order the £6 course books for each section. HOLY WEEK AND EASTER We are well into Lent and soon we will once again be celebrating the momentous events of Holy Week.

Belief in resurrection is the central tenet of our faith. The seed of Christ’s resurrection is now planted in us. There will be a new Heaven and a new earth. Whatever our present troubles, sorrows and disappointments we must remember that the whole of creation – including ourselves – is in the process of ‘being set free from its bondage to decay and we will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God’ (Romans 8:21) I wish you a very Happy Easter. Rev. Peter E. Bristow, Vicar

AN INVITATION TO A CONVERSATION I have been convinced for a long time that the vast majority of our neighbours do not engage with the church and perhaps more tellingly the church does not engage with them. Yet increasing numbers of people are searching for spiritual integrity and truth even if they would not express it this way. They are asking questions rather than providing answers and that is the nature of the conversation that you are invited to take part in. We live in a time of rapid change and in a society that seems harsh and destructive of it and of the individual. Community is under threat from mobile lifestyles and increased opportunity not to know your neighbour. Alongside this is the delight in the natural world and the desire to live lightly upon our planet and reverence creation. We live in a time when the importance of community sorely needs to be revalued, when the experience of sharing is about enjoyment in common with others. Community should be a necessity and a joy. And perhaps it is about relationships at home, work, and play and across the generations. The invitation is open to all, seeking to explore, to listen and to share. It does not have to take place in church or on Sundays but at times and places that suit. I have discussed the idea of the conversation with a few but would welcome a response from everybody so please get in touch. I commenced this in March and would like to continue this in April, so I look forward to hearing from you soon. Stanley Menzies Tel: 01937 541047

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk March 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents

To all Bramham residents: Here is the update from our March Parish Council meeting and latest developments: GALA IN DANGER!! Cllr Keith Innocent needs help! He cannot run the gala single handed and without volunteers this year’s gala could be the last one. Help is needed this year too (28th June). Please don’t assume that someone else will come forward, any help, just a couple of hours to run a stall maybe, will be much appreciated. Please contact Keith by email keith@thomlinsons.co.uk

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING The Annual Parish meeting will take place at an earlier start time of 7pm on Wed 9th April, Village Hall. This is different from a Parish Council meeting in that it is a meeting of the parish, but chaired by the Council Chairman. Residents can speak at the meeting and vote on any resolutions proposed at the meeting. The agenda normally includes the Chairman’s report, financial summary, and reports from the police, the church, and village groups. Anyone wishing to ask for specific agenda items should contact the clerk by 28th March. The Chairman makes the final decision on agenda items. Please do come along!

Councillor resignation: As many of you know Councillor Martin Batt recently went to work on Alderney for 2 years. He had very much hoped to spend enough time at home in Bramham to be able to continue to attend Council meetings and work as a councillor. This however, has proved difficult and as the Council already has other vacancies he felt that the best thing was for him to resign now, rather than at a later point in time. The Council is grateful to Martin for his consideration, and also of course for the very valuable contribution he has made to the Council. We wish him well in Alderney. Continued on page 11

Council Vacancies: Twelve residents have requested that vacancies be filled by election rather than the Parish Council co-opting, so an election will take place if there are more candidates than places. At the time of writing the timing of an election is expected to be 22 May. This coincides with local and European elections and therefore reduces costs from around £6,000 to £2,000. We await confirmation of the timetable from Leeds City Council Electoral Office. Full details and notice of election will be published on the website when they are available. Please contact the clerk for more information.

Headley Lane Closure: The National Grid has advised that due to the overhead line engineering works on Headley Lane a section of the lane will unfortunately be closed from 7 April ’14 to 4 October ‘15. Restricted access will be allowable to all farmers, tenants and landowners requiring access to land leading off Headley Lane and all are aware of the scheme. The closure points are to be at the junction of Aberford Road Bramham to a point heading East where Headley Lane becomes more of a path than Lane. A short section of public footpath Bramham 11 will also be closed with a diversion route available. The Parish Council has asked to meet with National Grid to see if the closure period could be reduced. Bowcliffe Road: We remind residents that we are pressing for Bowcliffe Road to be resurfaced but Leeds City Council will not do so this year. They will however fill in potholes if they are reported. We therefore urge residents to keep on doing so, at www.leeds.gov.uk then click the ‘report potholes’ box, or at www.fixmystreet.com. Superfast Broadband: We have heard that some residents are worried that that the scheme to register for better broadband is a scam! This is not the case. We really do need as many people as possible to register if we are to get improvements as a village. Register at www.superfastwestyorkshire.co.uk Residents’ letters regarding the Pavilion and Playing Field, and option monies: In response to the letters from residents in last month’s magazine with regards to our playing field and pavilion we would like to clarify a few points that appear to have been misinterpreted: •

The BSLA is not a village club, it is a private company with three directors.

The Parish Council has tried its best to agree a lease with the BSLA, substantially in the same form as the invalid one agreed in 2008 and a new lease was offered in April 2013. The BSLA’s response to this new lease, after 8 months, was to demand a 99 year lease with no limitation whatsoever as to how they could use the playing field, and no break points. This would be tantamount to giving our playing field away, and also contravenes legislation which states that we must get best value. As such, the demand was rejected, and notice has been served to the BSLA. Continued on page

The Parish Council is in no way ‘goading’ the BSLA to go to court. Court action would only commence if the BSLA chooses to instigate it to stake a claim to the lease it wants. If it does so the situation will only be dragged out further and this is not what the Parish Council wants to happen. We wish to be able to take over the pavilion to prevent further deterioration, to complete any outstanding works, open the doors asap, and involve residents in its future. If the BSLA decides not to take the matter to court we can do this either when the notice period ends at the end of May, or sooner if the BSLA gives up its claim.

If any residents have views or concerns about this situation we urge you to contact our Clerk or Chairman to discuss matters to avoid any confusion or misinterpretation of the Parish Council’s position. Option Monies: Regarding a resident’s points about the option monies. We have previously advised that an application process has been set up for grants from the option monies, this is in accordance with advice received from the Yorkshire Local Council Association. Also we held the open day in February for residents to put forward ideas. A working group will look at all applications and make recommendations to the full Parish Council. Next Meeting: Wednesday 9 April, 9.00 pm in the Village Hall, after the APM. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. LEEDS FESTIVAL – RESIDENTS’ TICKETS £43 The cost of residents’ tickets has had to be increased to £43. This is because the Community Fund has now advised us that it is not prepared to pay the full cost of the bus. The price of £43 will include the bus. There will also be a limited number of nominated tickets for non-residents at £43, but these will be allocated after residents' tickets. Full price tickets will also be available (price to be confirmed on the application form). This year we are using a PO Box. Applications for tickets will start Monday 7 April and close Sunday 27 April. Application forms and PO Box details will be available in the village shop and on the website (www.thisisbramham.co.uk) a few days before the opening date. Bramham Parish Council

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS 100 Club Yes, it’s that time of year again. Time for the renewal of the 100 club membership. Many thanks to the 80 members who renewed in 2013, mostly by standing order. This means that £400 was repaid as prize money (to be distributed in late March 2014). The prizes were one of £100 (no 81), two of £50 (no 4 & 24), five of £20 (no 7, 14, 20, 25, 40) and ten of £10 (13, 16, 22, 35, 37 44, 46, 58, 99, 113) – all these are the new numbers and found on the membership card. If you wish to join the 100 club please see the details on the Village web site or contact Christine Suddaby (details below) for a membership form. Payment can be made by cash, cheque or a standing order that you set up with your bank. Thank you and Good luck. Fundraising At the funding open days several people asked why the Village Hall was constantly fund raising and why it could not manage on letting income. The reason is that lettings income does NOT cover the regular monthly outgoings in some months. We have increased the income by a few new classes, but decided to maintain the hire charge at the same for previous years. However the charges for gas, electric, water, insurance and rates continue to rise. In addition there are always small repair jobs to fund. The ongoing restoration of the Village Hall cottage is also a significant item of expenditure and to date we have not been able to secure external funding. Our main fundraising event is the annual beer festival, which will be held on Saturday 20th September . Please put this date in your diary. We also generate funds by operating a bar at events and parties (see below). Having a family celebration in 2014? Why not use the Village Hall? Children’s party packages are available at weekends and most early midweek evenings for just £30 for two hours. Friday and Saturday night hire is just £120 for the whole hall. We can often provide a paying bar at sensible prices (not silly hotel prices!) at no additional cost to you. The hall can also be booked for weddings – price on application. For more information about any hall booking please see the contact details below. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. 17 FOOD BANKS NEED OUR SUPPORT Thousands of people regularly go hungry because they have not enough money to make ends meet. They face impossible choices between eating and heating, feeding their children or paying the rent or the mortgage. Food banks provide responsive emergency relief with a pack of 3 days balanced food. The food banks are run by volunteers who work in collaboration with medical staff, social workers and other caring services. As times get tougher the number of food banks is increasing. Our nearest food bank is at Acomb in York and we have containers in Bramham Church for you to provide items of food. They will then be taken weekly to the food bank. Saturday April 26th 2014 Bramham is delighted to be beating the bounds of its parish shortly and all villagers, their friends and families are invited to join us on this lovely walk. Beating the Bounds is an ancient custom where a group of old and young members of the community walk the boundaries of the parish. Please note – this year we start from the Village Hall ! The following describes the stages of the walk and should be read in conjunction with the attached map showing the route around the local area. It is intended that participants start off as a single group and try to maintain the group over the 6 stages. This is to simplify the logistics involved in marshaling the walkers and providing the transport to and from the stage start/end points. It is also felt that walkers being involved with a single group will benefit from the camaraderie engendered when walking together. So you may walk all 6 stages or simply select one or more as suits your abilities and join the stage you want at the appropriate start time shown below. A description of each stage is given below. These are intended to give an idea of the environment and walking conditions for each stage, they are not a detailed description of the routes which may vary with weather conditions on the day.

STAGE ONE: Bramham Village Hall to Newton Kyme – 8.30 am start (prompt) – 2.8 miles (walk to or park at the Village Hall ) Starting from the Village Hall we walk to Bramham School where we cross the road and walk through the woods following Carr Beck until we reach Windmill Road which we follow until turning right along the edge of the fields. We then take a left over styles to reach Bar Lane when we turn left on the road for a short distance then following a footpath on the right which takes us along the side of Carr Beck again until we reach the A659 Boston Spa road. We take the footpath towards Boston Spa for a short distance then cross the road and follow a track down to the River Wharfe. We walk along the side of the river until reaching the old Wharfe Bridge where we turn right and follow a footpath which takes us into Newton Kyme and the car park in front of the old paper mill. This stage is picturesque, some walking on paths and involves climbing over 6 stiles.

STAGE TWO: Newton Kyme to Toulston Lane – 10.15 am start – 1.66 miles – transport leaves village square 10.00 am - ( park at the old paper mill ) We recommence the walk from Newton Kyme heading back along the footpath towards Clifford, crossing the A659 onto Bar Lane again when we then take a footpath on the left which heads south in a direct line to meet Toulston Lane. There is 1 stile to climb and the views on the walk are looking towards Bramham and Clifford over open countryside. The walking should be easy with a slight incline to tackle towards the end. Continued on page 20

20 STAGE THREE: Toulston Lane to Spen Lane End 1.74 miles. 11.00 am start.

Transport leaves village square 10.45 am - (park on Warren Lane). Probably the easiest stage, involving walking along the surfaced roads of Warren Lane and Spen Common Lane passing Headley Cottages and Headley Hall.

STAGE FOUR: Spen Lane End to Terry Lug through Bramham Park . 4miles. 11.45 am start.Transport leaves village square 11.30am - (park Spen Lane end) We now have the opportunity, thanks to the kindness of Nick Lane Fox, to enjoy some of the scenery of Bramham Park not normally seen by walkers following the prescribed routes through Bramham Park. We take the ‘flyover’ from Spen Lane into the park and head into Black Fen woods. From there we take in the views of the house and gardens and follow the tracks around the gardens and head into the woods of the Lendrick Hills and then down to the stage end at Terry Lug. Here we are invited to have lunch on the lawn of Terry Lugg House. The longest stage at 4 miles, but no climbing of stiles and good walking conditions. STAGE FIVE: Terry Lug to Junction of Dalton Lane and Compton Lane – 1.30 pm start – 2 miles – transport leaves village square 1.15 pm ( park at Terry Lug ) Now on the return leg we leave Terry Lug, cross Thorner road and walk down hill on the track to pass the lake on our left. We turn right onto a little used path and head north through well grassed fields to reach Wothersome medieval village and then uphill to Thorner Lane. Crossing over we then find the Roman Road of Dalton Lane which takes us on easy walking to the junction with Compton lane. Maybe 2 stiles to climb but otherwise good walking in interesting woodland. Dalton Lane could be muddy ! STAGE SIX: Compton Lane to The Village Hall –2.30 pm start – 2 miles – transport leaves village square 2.15 pm (Dalton Lane is a farm access track so be careful where you park – walkers doing the last stage only could be dropped off at Wattlesyke) Turning right off Dalton Lane we see a good downhill path heading to the A1 and the new link road which we cross and then follow the new cycle track towards Bramham taking a left turn to head towards the school, and then to The Village Hall and our walks end. Very easy walking.

TRANSPORT: Will be available to take participants to the stage starting and ending points. The vehicles will depart from the VILLAGE SQUARE at the times shown above. To return to the village square after your walk simply take the transport waiting at the stage end. You can of course make your own arrangements to be dropped off and picked up at the stage start/end points which are all on routes out of Bramham. Please note that stage times are estimates and may vary on the day. CLOTHING: Please ensure that you are correctly dressed, have good strong footwear and that you have food and drink with you to last the duration of the walk. Continued on page 21

22 BRAMHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Hello to all our friends in Bramham and surrounding Villages ! School is really developing now into the place to be ! We are expecting a full cohort of new starters this September and are really excited to see how quickly our school has grown. We have lots of plans for Bramham, including a potential on-site nursery and a development of our wonderful outdoor areas. Our Parent Room is now taking shape, offering families a place to obtain support and guidance from both school and the children’s centre. A HUGE thank you to Marcus Mills at Clifford Round Table for helping us with the funding for this amazing resource. Leeds City Council will be replacing the beige concrete cladding over the summer so our buildings will be looking all smart and ready for September. So we will finally be saying goodbye to the scaffolding! Our new P.E. Grant is a wonderful legacy left from the Olympics in 2012. We have received some money from the Government which is specifically ring-fenced for sporting activity. The children will be benefitting from special basketball and tag rugby lessons in addition to their existing cricket, football and gymnastics provision. We recently did Chinese Lishi Dance ! We are really excited about our new basketball posts which will be arriving shortly. Mrs Moseley is putting in a bid to Sports for All for new playground surfacing and markings for our children to use - so keep your fingers crossed! Thank you to everyone who came to see us at the Village Hall Open Days. It was really good to see you all and hear so many positive thoughts about our school. If you would like to come and visit please call Mrs Kitchen in the office.

STOP PRESS! LITTER PICK UPDATE The Bramham in Bloom spring judging will take place on Friday 11th April and as many volunteers as possible are required to help with picking up litter around the route the judges will take. Please meet in the square for 10.00 am on Sun 6th April if you can help. If you could let me know in advance that would be great.

Gerry Taylor - Tel: 845828 or email: taylorgerry@btinternet.com or text: 07817 849556

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM Yorkshire in Bloom

Judgment day 11th April We now have the date, so please prepare your gardens and tidy any areas on the judging route. For those on the judging route posters will be supplied as usual so please display them in your window. Gerry Taylor has kindly agreed to organise a litter pick so please support her. The time involved is not great and the whole Village benefits for months to come. As usual the judges would like to see residents and we should be in the square between 11.00 and 11.30. We are aware that there were problems with timing last year and this should not be repeated , so give us your support. As we have said many times it is Bramham that is being judged not Bramham in Bloom

LADIES OF THE BENEFICE! I have told many of you of the joy of going to Wydale Hall. It is our diocesan house, at Brompton-by-Sawdon, near to Scarborough. The house is a calm and restful place to be, with a marvellous welcome, fantastic food and comfortable bedrooms. The rooms all have en-suite shower rooms and really comfortable beds. There is a stair lift to the first floor and dietary needs can be catered for if known in advance. It is my intention to lead a retreat for ladies in the benefice. I have booked 25 places, Monday 26th May to Wednesday 28th May. The cost will be £146.00 for the two nights. The retreat will give us time to talk together, reflect and rest. There is a chapel to use together or for personal reflection. We will have Holy Communion together on the Wednesday morning. The booking will be by contacting me by phone (844789), or in person, and a £25 deposit. If we use all the places on offer then we will have the Hall to ourselves for those two days. The programme will be announced later, but it is necessary to book the places by Saturday 12th April to give the staff time to make arrangements. Come and join us and make it a wonderful occasion. BRAMHAM CALENDAR FOR 2015 DON’T FORGET TO KEEP TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS THROUGH THE SPRING AND SUMMER FOR NEXT YEAR’S CALENDAR. We will be having the selection process at the beginning of September. All photographs to be considered should be images of Bramham and surrounding areas. These can be left at the Village Shop or given to Gill Young or Rev. Stanley Menzies. The Calendar is now one of the Church’s main fund raiser, so we do hope to have some great photographs for 2015. We are most grateful to Alison Mackie and her Calendar Girls for producing the calendar for 2014, and our thanks are also due to Lyn at the Village Shop for selling them for us. And to everyone who bought one for their husbands! But the 2015 calendar will be back to normal!!

MONDAY CLUB The next meeting is on Monday 7th April 1.30 pm in the Village Hall We look forward to seeing all Senior Citizens, and would especially love to see some new faces.

If you need a lift ring Mavis on 842321 Last month we held a experimental Luncheon Club for the over 60s. Mavis would like to thank all the people who made the delicious soups and the helpers who turned up in full force. Thank you also to all the people who came. We are still considering if we should make this a regular event instead of the usual Monday Club, but to make it worthwhile we must have an increase in attendance.

CHURCHES TOGETHER LENT TALKS You are invited to hear the last of Church Leaders speaking about their denominations: Revd. Graham Carter - Methodist 1st April To be held at 7.30pm In the Parish Room,

41 ST LUKE PARISH CHURCH, CLIFFORD As you may know St Luke’s was broken into recently and two paintings were stolen. Fr Ken has written the following:The Parish saddened by the desecration of their holy place. Made even more poignant during the season of Lent. One of the Oil Paintings removed was by Correggio and portrayed Christ being taken down from the Cross The Thirteenth of our Fourteen Stations of the Cross. During the Lenten season we accompany Jesus as He fasted and prayed in the wilderness for 40 days. We enter into his suffering We try and perceive the depth of his love for the world that he should suffer so for humankind. Over the Font hung the reproduced painting of The Virgin and Child by Sir Anthony Van Dyke. A wonderful painting for families to look at especially at Baptisms. Jesus suffered at the hands of those who arrested him. None the less Jesus was able to say, Father Forgive them, they do not know what they are doing. May God give us grace to forgive those who hurt us. They do not know the hurt and the harm that they do. During Lent we are drawn closer to God as we pray, fast, meditate and contemplate the mercy of God.

FrK ... BRAMHAM IN BLOOM A big thank you to all our regular gardeners who tend the beautiful beds, borders and baskets, all of which are looking particularly beautiful at the moment. We would greatly appreciate offers of help from new ‘occasional’ volunteers to help our ‘regulars’ in specific areas of the village during times of holidays, illness and the like which prevent certain regular jobs to be carried out at the appropriate time, e.g. planting, watering and weeding. We would stress that such requirements are very ‘occasional' and we currently have a list of such garden helpers willing to assist at such times, but we would warmly welcome more volunteers. If you would like to help the village in this way, please contact Ernest Nichols (Chair of Bramham in Bloom) on 01937 841195. Bramham in Bloom Committee

Thought for the Month There will come a moment in your life when you discover you want someone in your life more than the things in your life. At this moment you will have discovered love.

A smile for April Bill was enjoying an afternoon in his garden when suddenly a car crashed through his fence. An elderly lady struggled out quite unhurt, unlike the car and Bill’s fence. Bill was a more than annoyed and he quite sharply said to the lady “How old are you and should you still have a driving licence?” “I am 92 and I don’t need a licence” she said. “How come” replied Bill. “Well, I went to the Doctor’s recently and after she had examined me, she asked me for my driving licence. I gave it to her and she tore it up and disposed of it in the waste paper bin, and told me I didn’t need it anymore” she said. Bill was at a loss for words!!

Easter Blessings from STEPPING STONES The children at Stepping Stones learned about temptation this month. They spent the first part of the session beautifully decorating ginger bread men and women, then they gathered around and listened to Revd Andy tell them the story of Jesus having to resist temptation for 40 days and 40 nights.

They experienced a small part of this by having to wait 40 minutes before they could eat their delicious ginger bread people! They finished off the evening by decorating Mother’s Day cards, which all looked fantastic! The next Stepping Stones session will be on Friday 11th April, when we will be making some Easter crafts and an Easter egg hunt! All are welcome, it doesn't matter if you attend church or not, it is just a nice way to get the local children and parents together for some fun and learning. Jen Saynor Special thanks to a reader of the magazine for contributing to the cost of colour on the cover of this edition
