Open Churches – Sacred Space About this time of year, I am often in France – a place that I have visited most years throughout my life, because of family connections. This year, however, I went a little earlier than usual and enjoyed the snow rather than the sun. Of course, now I am yearning for some time in those lovely French villages, enjoying the odd glass of wine and genuine French bread. I am reminded, however, of last year when, cycling in rural France, we noticed an important – and to our mind, saddening – cultural change. I have always loved visiting the ubiquitous church at the centre of every French village. The attraction began long before I was ordained and perhaps even before I really came to faith. It has never been about the history or architecture of the building for me, rather the sense of peace and sacred space. Last year I was surprised to find a church locked, then dismayed as we tried the doors of churches in several other villages on the route – very few were open. The symbolism of having the church at the heart of every village had now been replaced by a very different symbolism…. I guess it is as much about changing patterns of life as it is about the church itself, but it does seem as though an essential function of the church is being lost – providing a space for people to come close to God. It matters not if it is only one person a week who finds solace in a church – for that person, the church has met a basic need. We try to keep our churches open and I am pleased to say that St Mary’s, Boston Spa and All Saints’ Bramham are open during the day (see below for approximate timings). It is not unusual to meet people in church, who have just come in searching for something, often in moments of personal difficulty. You are always very welcome – if there is a service going on, and you just want somewhere to sit and pray, you can still do so and leave when you wish.

Clergy Letter continued from page 3. There are times in our national or community life when the church suddenly becomes a focus for collective grief and emotion. Recently we have seen this with the Grenfell fire and the Manchester bombing. Events which are so high profile bring to the fore a collective desire to consider life beyond the mundane and everyday, to search for the sacred, the hope that may be found through our faith. Nevertheless, for most of us our need for this is experienced on a personal, individual or family, level and we may find ourselves drawn – often inexplicably from our perspective – to enter a church and to find comfort there. For me as I visit a new village, I love to escape into the peace of a church, to see the place where so many generations have come together to worship God. It gives me a boost, in a way that I cannot adequately describe in words. Quite a while ago now, I met a little girl, with her father in one of our churches. Imagine my surprise when he told me she loved to visit churches. He didn’t know why, just that she seemed to love the buildings. Perhaps, like me, that little one just experienced something beyond herself, in that space. Why not drop in to one of our churches? All Saint’s Bramham is open 10am-4pm each day St Mary’s Boston Spa is open 9am-5pm each day

Rev Jane Brown PLEASE KEEP THE DATE FREE SUNDAY 2ND September is the date of the final Service in Bramham Church for Revd Jane Brown who is leaving us to become Rector of Garforth. 10.30 am at All Saints’ Church Bramham followed by lunch in the Village Hall. The service will be a BENEFICE Holy Communion Service and will be suitable for all ages.

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL news July 2018

Christmas Day Lunch 2018? Do you know that it is less than 26 weeks until Christmas day? Following the small but very successful 2017 Christmas Day lunch at the Village Hall, we have decided to organise a similar event for 2018. If you are not spending Christmas Day with family or friends and would like to join us for lunch and have some company on Christmas day, then please get in touch by phone (07398 244634 or 01937 849455) or by email at bramhamvh@outlook.com . This is not about charity, or who can or can’t pay. This is about you and your partner or carer or parent or child or sibling or friend not being on your own on Christmas Day. Those who joined us last year said it was one of the best events they had been to. Don’t be shy, get in touch and book you Christmas Day lunch with those in similar circumstances to you. Memorial Plaques at the hall. Several people have asked about the small board of memorial plaques on the wall at the side of the bar at the hall. These have been created at the request of donors, whose family or loved ones have an attachment to the hall or the village. If anyone wishes to have a plaque dedicated to a loved one or their family/group they are available for a donation of at least £10. The plaques can accommodate 40 letters. Details of the wording required (up to 40 letters/characters) should be provided in writing, with cash or cheque (minimum donation of £10) payable to Bramham Village Hall. Please post these through the village hall letter box or c/o 21 Firbeck Road. Village Hall Bookings for your party or event. We are already taking children’s party bookings for September to December. If your child has a birthday and you would like to use the hall, please make your booking soon, to avoid disappointment. Likewise if you are planning a weekend evening event and might want to use the Village Hall (maybe with a bar), please contact us as soon as you have a date in mind. Finally we have recently updated the webpage on thisisbramham.co.uk to provide lots more info on the hall and the regular classes/events. Please check it out!! The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07398 244634 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com. Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby/Dalton on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Church Hill, Bramham LS23 6QF. Ladies of the Benefice, Wydale Retreat 2018 Well, would you believe it! Two years on the trot, we have had good weather for the annual retreat. If you can picture it; some of the ladies of the benefice sitting together on the benches overlooking the valley and the sheep, just chatting away whilst others were walking up to the walled garden. This is what happens when you take a group of ten ladies off on their own to the outer regions of the county. We did have some sessions when we listened and discussed the life of St Paul and times when we worshipped together. The sense of fellowship was very evident amongst the whole group and those who had not met before got to know each other. Of course Wydale Hall offered its best for us:- comfy rooms, meals and snacks all day long, and a setting to stir our hearts and thank God for his wonderful creation. If you are setting out your diaries for next year we have booked for our sixth retreat 3rd – 5th June 2019

BRAMHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN The Regulation 16 (Publicising a Plan Proposal) Consultation period for the Bramham Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) started on Monday 28th May and will close at 5pm on Monday 9th July 2018. Leeds City Council (LCC) takes responsibility for this stage of the process and has sent copies of all the related documents to an independent inspector to review and report as appropriate. The plan and supporting documents can be inspected at various locations, including LCC City Centre Hub at 2 Great George Street, Wetherby Library, Bramham Post Office, Bramham Medical Centre, the LCC website at www.leeds.gov/your-council/planning/neighbourhood-planning, under the sub-heading ‘Current consultations’, and also the Bramham website www.bramham.org.uk.

The independent inspector takes note of all representations on the Neighbourhood Plan made to LCC whether by Statutory Consultees, by Stakeholders or by Residents. The Plan was drawn up taking into account all the views we received from Bramham residents and will help shape the future of Bramham. It sets out a vision for the future of Bramham and includes planning policies that will help LCC to determine planning applications in the area. You can help to support the Plan by giving your views to LCC. It is so important that the village residents get behind our plan and protect the future of our village. LCC have provided a Response Form at the LCC website detailed above on which any representations should be made. When completed these should be returned by email to npsupport@leeds.gov.uk. So please do give your views to Leeds City Council before 9th July! The next and hopefully final stage will be a referendum amongst residents, again organised by LCC, where if more than 50% of those who vote are in favour, the plan is formally adopted and has legal status. Paul Marshall Chair, Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group

CHURCHYARD

One flower pot per grave

We are extremely fortunate to have a small band of people who cut the grass on a regular basis. However it is very inconvenient to have extra plant pots and ornaments on the grave plot. Another hazard is glass, this is very dangerous for the people cutting the grass, also one or two people are putting gravel near the Ashes Garth, this is dangerous for anyone using a strimmer. Please do not leave glass or gravel in the churchyard. The contents of the large sacks in the grave yard are sent for compost and other items should not be placed in these sacks. Therefore Dog excrement, glass and plastic is a major nuisance. Please take this home and place in your own dustbins.

Bramham's New 'Welcome' Rock and Plaque Bramham Historic Asset Conservation Group (BHACG) has recently installed a rock , sourced from a local quarry, on the verge approaching Bowcliffe traffic lights from the South. A new 'Bramham' plaque was fitted to the rock. This plaque was obtained by the Parish Council as a replacement for the one stolen from the rock at Paradise Way/Spen Common Lane junction. The 'Bramham' plaque that was stolen, 'magcially' re-appeared several months later but in a distressed condition, it was fitted back onto the rock. The 'Battle of Bramham Moor' plaque that was stolen at the same time has not come to light. May we thank all particpants in the project - especially local farmer Jamie Ingham for his sterling efforts in lifting/ transporting the large lump ! Neil Ferres
