The Clergy Letter for June It’s more than my job’s worth’! I am sure you have heard that from someone, somewhere in your lives. Those people who can’t see themselves able to step outside the remit of their particular role will think this way, even if they don’t actually say the words. On the other hand, we were often told, by parents usually, ‘if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.’ I wonder which sort of person you are; one to be restricted by the remit of the job in hand and only working to the letter of the job description, or one who finds their job expanding as you get going? Of course, there are many grades in between the two ends of the scale, but you must know people who fit into each of those descriptions if it not you personally. As Christians what jobs are we given? ‘Love one another as I have loved you’, said Jesus, and ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ – two all encompassing commandments that should define our day to day living. So how are you going to carry out those directives; just to the letter of the law or with flair and imagination? How many people do you know who will tell you all the jobs they see that need doing- by others? They are certainly good at telling us how the world around them needs putting right by A.N. Other, but somehow it is never their job to be the one to do that particular job. On the other hand, there are those who you don’t see, doing the helpful things for those around them, caring for their neighbours, their environment or their families. They are the people who are far too busy getting on with their prime directives from Jesus to be out there complaining to others about the state of the world. As our Benefice rumbles into the second year of vacancy we must open our eyes to how well (or not) we are coping with our people and our churches on our own. How many people around your neighbourhood do you visit or help in role as a Christian. When you see old people becoming more housebound, do you risk being rebuffed by knocking on the door to suggest doing shopping for them? When you see young mothers looking harassed, do you tell them about the Ark groups in All Saints church, .

Clergy Letter continued…….... Bramham or in St. Mary’s church Boston Spa that give company and spiritual support to parents and carers? Do you support the worship and social events that other people organise in your church? Sometimes our job is just to put ourselves out for the sake of those near us Please be sure you are not just a ‘jobsworth’ person. Our community is a Christian community and it needs people to see those commandments from Jesus in action -our action! Don’t wait for someone else to complain about the lack of compassion or absence of action; step up to the mark and join in with the work of Christ in our benefice. All of us are the advertisement for Christ in these neighbourhoods so let it be a large page colour spread!

Rev Trish New Youth Group for Boston Spa and the surrounding villages / area Due to low numbers, our Holy Mackerel group has not been running since Christmas. I have been working with Phil Baraniak, youth pastor for the Kings Church to look at alternative options. We have decided to form a joint group affiliated to Young Life to offer youth activities in our area. Young Life is a national network of Christian youth groups for teens and twenties. They have two other groups based in Harrogate and York which we could meet up with from time to time. Our aim is to provide a place for young people to grow spiritually; to make friends that could last for life; and to provide opportunities to lead and serve in their local churches. We aim to start our programme on the 4th of May and run fortnightly on Friday evenings. The programme will be resourced by leaders from St Mary's and The King's Church and be offered for young people in yr 9+. It will run fortnightly, from 7:30-9pm, in the homes of our leaders. All Safeguarding will be carried out by Young Life, and leaders will have to submit their DBS details to Young Life and more information is available on their website: https://www.younglife.org Kate Kennedy

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk

May 2018 Update CHAIR and VICE CHAIR: At the annual meeting a Chair and Vice Chair are elected for the coming year. Val Whitbread did not put herself forward for the Chairman role this year, feeling that it was time for a change for both herself and the Parish Council. Linda Richards was elected as Chairman, and Pete Dunn as Vice Chairman. Val is remaining on the Parish Council. All council members expressed their gratitude for the hard work which Val has given to the Council and the residents of Bramham Parish PLANNING ISSUES: Church Hill: Leeds City Council (LCC) Building Control have visited the site and advised that the works do not currently represent a danger. However they will monitor the situation. The Parish Council has not received notice of any planning application regarding the site. Farfield House: Our understanding is that planning permission has been refused but we are seeking written confirmation. HIGHWAYS ISSUES: We are very concerned at the lack of progress within LCC with highways issues previously reported and are seeking a meeting with LCC’s Chief Highways Officer. PLAYGROUND: We apologise for the delay in effecting repairs to the playground. We have been chasing the repair company for several weeks and have been disappointed with their slow response, but by the time you read this report repairs should have been done. Thank you to the group of residents who make regular checks on the playground and keep us aware of problems, and to Cllr James Pirie for keeping on top of the issues and the repair company! Next Meeting: Wednesday 6 June, 7.30 pm, in the Pavilion. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. We are reminded to be extra careful during summer months about protecting our property. For example:Don’t leave the keys on view just by the door! Lock up the garden shed and make sure the mowers and expensive tools are locked away after use. Be on the lookout for vehicles (white transit type and pick up type) coming round taking things out of gardens. There have been reports of this in the area. Make sure ladders are put away,. DON’T MAKE IT EASY FOR THE THIEF. Going away? Make sure the property is secured every time you leave, even for a short time. Set your alarm, if you have one. Use timer switches for lights. Don’t leave the curtains drawn during the day. Ask a neighbour to pop in and draw the curtains in the evening. A couple of sensible tips:- Don’t display your home address on luggage labels. Take photographs of valuable items in your home. If you see anything suspicious please report it immediately and take a note of car registration numbers etc., The list goes on—for further information contact Neighbourhood Watch in the village - Police contact numbers on the back page of the Magazine —————————————— Barbecues and bonfires Never leave them unattended and supervise children and pets. Don’t use petrol or paraffin with either barbecue or bonfire. Store cylinders out of the sunshine.

Garden Hints This is the time of the year when young, soft, plant growth is about. It is in condition to change its mode to form other plant organs, in this case from shoots to roots helped by us! This soft condition forms the basis of softwood cuttings of all those attractive plants that you see in your garden (or someone else’s) and which you can turn into new plants to swop with your neighbours or sell at the local church social. You don’t need fancy equipment with bottom heat but it does help. As well as sowing seed of sunflowers, night scented stock and sweet peas my Dad always encouraged me to try a few cuttings on the window sill or to put some lengths of willow or poplar into a bottle of water which formed roots. Plants grown from softwood cuttings range from shrubs, herbaceous plants, alpines and pot plants. Shrubs obtained in this way are Buddleias, Weigelas, Spiraeas, Forsythias, Elderberries, Brachyglottis (Senicio), Euonymus, Potentillas, Ceanothus and many conifers, Gentians, Leycesteria, Lithospermums and many more. Prepare compost with half grit sand and half compost, peat, pearlite OR vermiculite. Moisture retention with free drainage is important to get air to the base of the cutting. Use healthy non- flowering terminal shoots 2-4 inches long and cut just below a node with the sharpest knife or razor blade (the point where the leaves arise). Dip the end of the cutting into a rooting hormone powder or liquid (I like powder). Immediately dibber a hole in the compost, half the depth of the cutting and make sure the base of the cutting sits in contact with the bottom of the hole. Gently backfill – do not firm. Remember the need for oxygen. Cuttings can be placed around the edge of a 5” pot where they get maximum aeration, or in seed trays or plug trays. It depends on the number you are taking. Do not overcrowd. Carefully water in. This settles the cuttings. If you can give some bottom heat all well and good. Remember ‘cold heads, warm feet’. Cover with polythene or a plastic lid. This is where the under-heated propagator comes into its own and you can place it out of the direct sunlight where it might get too hot and the cuttings wilt. Keeping cool heads conserves energy!

If you think you would like to join us please give me a ring on 845348 Glennis

Boston Spa Trefoil Guild

GARDEN HINTS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19‌...

The cut base of the cutting will form a callus (plant cells which can differentiate or change their function) from which the new roots will appear. When the cutting starts to grow after 3 /4 weeks you will have a good idea when roots have formed or the roots appear at the base of the pot. Lift and carefully pot on in good compost, in a pot of the size suitable to take the rooting system. Give some protection in a frame or a quiet shaded part of the greenhouse to establish and then harden off. Good luck to our green fingered brigade! dave@daviddmitchell.co.uk T: 01977689858 M:07967730010

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL news June 2018

Ongoing work at the Village Hall Many users have asked about hanging space for coats. For those who remember the hall before the new toilets were installed, there were rows of coat hangers in a cloakroom near the old toilets. We now have some new coat hooks that will be installed in the area close to the toilets. We have also created some additional kitchen storage which will be kept locked so that items don’t get “borrowed” and not returned. Equipment is available for users of the hall by prior arrangement as part of the booking process. There is a new storage cupboard in the main hall which will be used to store surplus glasses from the bar instead of using up the valuable space behind the bar, and cleaning equipment. The outside light switches that were damaged over the winter should be replaced soon, now that we have the spare parts. If anyone is aware of repair work that need to be done at the hall please let committee members know so we can add it to the list of jobs!! Village Hall Bookings for your party or event. We are already taking children’s party bookings for September to December. If your child has a birthday and you would like to use the hall, please make your booking soon, to avoid disappointment. Likewise if you are planning an event and might want to use the Village Hall (including the bar), please contact us as soon as you have a date in mind. bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com Village Hall 100 club. If anyone wishes to join the 100 club draw, or needs to pay their 2018 subscription, the cost is just £10 for one number per year. Half of the contributions is used for the ongoing upkeep of the hall, the other half goes into prize money that is distributed at the year end. Application Forms were included in last month’s magazine Memorial Plaques at the hall. Several people have asked about the small board of memorial plaques on the wall at the side of the bar at the hall. These have been created at the request of donors, whose family or loved ones have an attachment to the hall or the village. If anyone wishes to have a plaque dedicated to a loved one or their family/group they are available for a donation of at least £10. The plaques can accommodate 40 letters. Details of the wording required (up to 40 letters/characters) should be provided in writing, with cash or cheque (minimum donation of £10) payable to Bramham Village Hall. Please post these through the village hall letter box or c/o 21 Firbeck Road. ……….CONTINUED PAGE 30 - TOP

Organ Restoration Appeal

As I am sure you are all aware that the organ in All Saints is in need of extensive renovation and the cost of this will be in the region of £75,000. As a start to this figure the Community fund has donated £35,000 and we have applied to different organisations for funds. We are intent on raising money from the local businesses and more importantly you the parishioners who live in Bramham and benefit from the continuing well-being of the Church. It would seem silly to risk the collected money on social events which may or may not appeal to the Village and we think it more sensible to hold a celebratory event when the organ is restored to its full strength. To this end we would expect to be able to invite all those who have supported us in this endeavour and perhaps only organise a Raffle for the purpose of setting up a maintenance fund to care for the organ over its expected 80 – 90 year trouble free span. If you have any questions or suggestions I would be very happy to answer them at a session after the Band concert Chips Browning churchwarden For details of payment please ring 842850 ALL SAINTS’ VCC
