I sit at my computer this evening bemoaning the fact that the nights are drawing in and the light has gone from the evenings. The tail end of the year is showing itself in all sorts of ways that we don’t always find fun. But, slow down a moment Trish! It is the Autumn months and look at what we can see, smell and hear! I heard an explanation for something I have not noticed in other years- the small birds in the tall trees near my house have been doing something I can only describe as ‘twittering’, (that’s not tweeting, for you social media buffs!) On the radio I heard a chance remark about the fact that these birds were all gathering and twittering in anticipation of their long migratory journey to warmer climes. The squirrels in the churchyard have had a bumper crop of conkers all in one fell swoop, since the gales in September and October sent the conkers hurtling down in one go rather than the usual seasonal steady fall. I am sure that many of you have delighted in the blackberries and apples that have seemed to be wonderfully plentiful this year. I hope you have stacked your freezers full, so the tastes will last through the winter. So, as I put away my sandals and put on shoes, search out my warmer cardigans and my darker coloured clothes I can muse on the changing of the seasons. We have an awesome world, that sits in the solar system in just the correct place to sustain life and provides us, in the temperate zones, with the four distinct seasons. As it says in Ecclesiastes chapter 3, verse 1, ‘for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.’ Whatever else we do at this cusp between the end of summer, the autumn fruitfulness, and the beginning of the dark winter, we need to take time out to marvel at the seasons. To look, listen and smell the times around us and the to thank God for this earth and its cycles. Our Creator has given us a world that cannot be equalled. It has sustained growth and life for millions of years and still presents the seasons with beauty and delight. I hear on the news today that there is a severe warning of the outcome of the actions of most of earth’s population; a warming of the oceans leading to catastrophic rise in waters around the coastal regions of many countries;

CLERGY LETTER CONTINUED………….. a heightened chance of drought in the summers and more extreme weather nearly everywhere. If we want to thank God for the beauty of this part of our world, to be able to see the turn of the seasons with joy, then we are going to have to turn our hearts and minds to being better stewards of this planet. We did nothing towards this world’s creation, it was given to us as a gift for life and we must take it on ourselves to rectify our mistakes, to change our own way of life and pray that others will do the same. We will all be handing this world to following generations and I hope and pray that we do enough to give our antecedents God’s world in good shape. May there be time for every matter under heaven to be looked at and cared for. Revd Trish

October 2018 Update The CRIME REPORT: Unfortunately, 3 Burglaries were reported this month, so once again, the police are recommending that residents are vigilant with regard to keys in houses. They also ask that residents report anything suspicious quickly so that action can be taken. PLANNING ISSUES: Church Hill: Ongoing monitoring continues. Building regulation officers are aware of resident and Council concerns, but as yet say that nothing is being done inappropriately. Farfield House: Residents and the Chair attended the Panel Meeting at the Civic Hall where an Inspector heard the arguments from LCC and the Developers regarding the site and its potential development. A site visit was made, and a decision will be given shortly. Residents and the Chair were able to put forward the concerns of the village regarding this development. Bramham House: No decision has yet been issued. HIGHWAYS ISSUES: Ward Councillor Norma Harrington continues to press the Highways Office, who have promised that works will be done on the winter schedule. PAVILION: The grass car parking extension work will be done shortly to alleviate some of the pressure from the additional use of the Pavilion. The Saturday and Sunday mornings continue to be well used with many children ( and adults) engaged in football activities. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: now in last phase of process. PC has endorsed the plan. It should now progress towards a referendum when all residents will get the opportunity to vote on it. A positive outcome would impact considerably on future planning proposals and compensation from builders Residents are strongly urged to vote ‌‌

Bramham in Bloom Gold Again! The council would like to congratulate all the members of the Bramham in Bloom group and the many people in the village who support them. Bramham Village Hall News October 2018 Christmas Day Lunch 2018? There is a separate item in the magazine inviting residents to join us for lunch. Not everyone is confident making a phone call or might not be able to understand the invitation. If you have a relative, friend or neighbour who might wish to join us, please get in touch on their behalf You can contact Santa’s little elves by phone (07398 244634 or 01937 849455) or by email at bramhamvh@outlook.com. Can I come to help and join the lunch? We have been asked if residents who are on their own can come along to help with the preparation and share the meal, rather than just turn up to eat. Yes of course. This is a lunch for neighbours to share; the preparation, the eating and the clearing up. So, if you want some company on Christmas Day, but would prefer to help, then get in touch. Sharing soup with the Bramham Monday Club Members of Bramham Primary School’s Gardening Club were delighted to join the village’s Monday Club on 1st October to share with them leek and potato soup made from their first harvest of leeks – all grown in the school’s newly created allotment. Having harvested their crop the week before, the children were thrilled to be sharing their soup as part of the ‘Big Soup Share’, the Royal Horticultural Society’s School Gardening community initiative. The Monday Club is a monthly social group for senior residents, and its members said they were honoured to be treated to such delicious soup from the children’s first harvest. Everyone enjoyed hearing from the children about their school’s new outdoor garden and learning area, and what they have been growing, particularly their cabbage and pumpkin which won awards in the recent Clifford Village Show. There were smiles all around as children and Monday Club members enjoyed one another’s company. The children are now thinking ahead to their next community food share, perhaps crumble made from apples grown at school? The Monday Club meets on the first Monday of every month from 1:30pm at Bramham Village Hall and welcomes new members. The group of senior residents socialise over refreshments with a programme of entertainment provided. Transport can be arranged to help residents attend. To find out more please contact Mavis Wilson on 01937 842321.

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM Hello Everyone…….here we are into Autumn the time of ‘mellow fruitfulness’ A busy time ahead. We have been emptying flower beds ready for replanting of winter polyanthus and tulip bulbs. Daffodils and tete a tetes will also be planted around areas in the village. One or two changes may take place so watch this space. Allotments are being cleared and the soil turned oready for sowing some broad beans, garlic and green manure. Usually at this time of year Bramham in Bloom are able to supply St George’s Crypt with surplus vegetables and fruit but the challenging weather has affected the amount produced. Bramham Primary School have organised Open Days for new parents to visit the school. In Bloom have worked in the garden to make the entrance pathway look attractive and welcoming. Good luck to the school with this venture.
NEW GARDENING GROUPS The committee are sharing out the planting areas in the village into groups to try and encourage new residents to join a group of their choice. There may be people who might like to work with volunteers to help with various activities.
Please contact Lynne Marshall 844767 if you would like more information. VOLUNTEER GROUPS The Village Square…….Lyndon Road… The Milnthorpes and Wetherby Road……… Bowcliffe Area……Clifford Road………..Senior Citizen Garden……..Wildlife Area. Lynne Marshall

Do you remember the Knitted Bible?
There were numerous stories from the Bible brought to life by the knitted figures arranged in various tableaux. Well‌‌ I am hoping to set up a Knit and Natter group in the new year and thought we could start to make our own set of stories. The group would meet in an afternoon and talk about those subjects that we find relevant as Christians; families, the news, politics(!?). Any one would be welcome, bring your friends and neighbours -male or female. All of you could help in this project by providing us with those odd small balls of wool that you have left over in your knitting bags. We will be able to use nearly all colours for the multitude of people and animals we will be tackling. I will put a box at the back of each church for your donations. There will be details of the times and dates for the group as soon as they are finalised, so keep a look out in the newsletters. Revd Trish

Bramham Community Fund The Bramham Community Fund exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents’ tickets at the Leeds Festival together with other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the Fund has allocated grants to a value of over £350,000. The last allocation of grants, based on the 2017 Festival took place in March 2018. It is planned that the allocations from the 2018 Festival will be considered in March 2019. The Fund is therefore now accepting applications. The closing date is 14 February 2019. To keep it simple, there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank, Bramham, LS23 6RS or send an email to: colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox will then meet to consider the applications. Proposed projects should normally be completed within one year of the grant being awarded. If a project is expected to exceed that timescale, the application should indicate as such. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to new projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. Colin Pool Walton Group of Artists Annual Exhibition November 2018 Inspiring Our Community in Art This year will be on the weekend of 17 to 18 November. WETHERBY AND DISTRICT FOODBANK The reasons why people come to the foodbank for help is varied. It is often stated that Wetherby and District is a very wealthy area, but like most towns it is not as wealthy as people make out and we do have people, the older generation who are on small pensions, brought up during and just after the war who are used to living a good healthy life on smaller amounts of plainer food than many people think is normal for today. Many of these people would possibly appreciate a little extra if we could only persuade them to get vouchers and come to the centre. This generation is very reluctant to ask for help. At the other end of the scale, there are the children who are on free school meals during term time, but during holidays don’t necessarily get a decent lunch. These children need our help. We are, therefore, always looking at ways to reach more people, which is why we have decided to open a new Distribution Centre in Boston Spa at Deepdale Community Centre. This will be led by The King’s Church and will operate every Monday morning from 10am – 12pm. As a Foodbank we are blessed by generous gifts of food and time through volunteering, we do, however, require more support financially. The financial cost of running a foodbank is small and therefore would only require 240 people to commit to donating £5 a month, that’s only £1.15 a week. If you would like to help in this way, then please visit our website wetherbyanddistrict.foodbank.org.uk and click the red donate button. For more information contact the Project Manager Claire Fleetwood 07840455725 clairefoodbank@gmail.com.

CHURCHYARD One flower pot per grave We are extremely fortunate to have a small band of people who cut the grass on a regular basis. However it is very inconvenient to have extra plant pots and ornaments on the grave plot. Another hazard is glass, this is very dangerous for the people cutting the grass, also one or two people are putting gravel near the Ashes Garth, this is dangerous for anyone using a strimmer. Please do not leave glass or gravel in the churchyard. The contents of the large sacks in the grave yard are sent for compost and other items should not be placed in these sacks. Therefore Dog excrement, glass and plastic is a major nuisance. Please take this home and place in your own dustbins.
RULES FOR THE CHURCHYARD are on the bookshelf at the back of Church.
