Clergy Letter for September:So long, and thanks for all the fish… Fans of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ by Douglas Adams will remember the phrase ‘so long, and thanks for all the fish’ – the departing words of the dolphins leaving earth just before it was to be destroyed (by the Vogons as they made way for an intergalactic bypass). I am very pleased indeed to say that I am not leaving the Benefice in such dire circumstances! I know that, as I write, the vacancy continues, but I believe we should be proud (in an appropriately Christian manner) of what we have achieved in recent years. Our churches are in a good position with great potential for growth. In the 3 years I have been here, I have seen: the churches grow in their outreach, particularly bringing our faith into the conversations and events more and more continued strength and variety in our work with children, young people and families, both within and beyond our local schools more and more people actively involved in discipleship activities (such as small group or prayer meetings) beyond Sundays many people step out in faith to take on roles such as the leading of intercessions and even whole lay-led services, helping to enhance the variety of worship on offer an increasing emphasis on prayer, trusting that it is God who gives growth and it is him that we are serving And I am pleased to have known many committed people, who have laboured tirelessly to further God’s work in these communities. For each of you who have gone that bit further, risked something scary, stepped out of your comfort zone in these three years, I offer my particular thanks. I trust you have grown in the process and that God will complete the work he has started in you.

Whilst I may not be saying it in the same kind of circumstances, I do want to join the dolphins in saying thank you for the fish – or at least the metaphorical ones! I was so blessed to have Father Peter as my training incumbent. I learnt so much from him and he was always happy to debate with me the many and varied aspects of church practice that were new to me. As well as lots and lots of practical ‘stuff’, Peter showed me what it meant to be a priest. With Peter and Trish as clergy colleagues, I was able to explore and to work out who I am as a priest – and believe me it takes some exploring! Many, many lay people have helped me on this journey too and I couldn’t possibly name everyone. I hope you know who you are. Serving here has often meant being pushed beyond my own spiritual comfort zone and I recommend it! It is amazing what spiritual growth comes from experiencing new forms of worship and prayer. Yes, the familiar is reassuring, but sometimes the unfamiliar brings us to new insights and greater intimacy with God. So, I have been fed practically and spiritually, but I couldn’t end without saying thank you for the physical food I have received here. Thank you to the bakers of the Benefice and to those who have wrestled with my dietary needs to provide me with nourishment over these 3 years (though I am not so grateful for the extra flab around my middle). Those of you who attend my final service will hear these words, but they are worthy of repeating. I end with a prayer from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, which I offer for you all: I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. (Ephesians 3:16-17 )

August 2018 Update There is no Parish Council Meeting in August

War Memorial Thank you to Paul Marshall and Cllr David Hopps for considerable help on the day of the War Memorial cleaning. We hope you all think it a great improvement! Bramham 10k & BBQ Both of these pavilion fund raising events were firm successes, not only raising funds but providing great days out in Bramham. A heartfelt thank you to the pavilion committee, the many volunteers at the 10k, our very generous local 10k sponsors (APC Clothing, The Passion Group, 2H Storage Solutions, and Sainsburys Tadcaster) and to the Village Hall bar team for providing the bar at the BBQ. Without all of these super folk these events wouldn’t happen. Pavilion Funds/Costs Thanks to the efforts with events such as those above, Saturday Kitchen income, Mums and Tots and Children’s summer sports days, plus regular hire by Bramham Football Club, Collingham Juniors, 5 Star sports, and children’s parties, the pavilion has more than covered its running costs every year since it opened in January 2015. The excess is ‘ring fenced’ as reserve funds for the pavilion for future years. Thank you again to the Pavilion Committee for all of the hard work in organising all of these things. As well as this meaning that the pavilion is not a drain on the precept, it also of course means that we are seeing the pavilion and field well used by residents and the local community. Senior Citizens Centre (SCC) Last month’s update advised that ward councilors have secured funds towards updating of the SCC. We would like to explain that this is in lieu of funds that were not forthcoming at the time from S106 monies on the Woodyard development. We also have funds promised from the Community Fund for the refurbishment. We will keep you updated.

Parish Council Notes continued:Bramham House The revised plans for the redevelopment of Bramham House still do not address parish council concerns and don’t command the full support of residents, so the parish council have sought further assurances in their response to LCC Planning officers. Thank you to Cllr Pete Dunn for persisting with his efforts on this issue.

Next Meeting: Wednesday 5 September, 7.30 pm, In the Pavilion. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. WETHERBY AND DISTRICT FOODBANK The reasons why people come to the foodbank for help is varied. It is often stated that Wetherby and District is a very wealthy area, but like most towns it is not as wealthy as people make out and we do have people, the older generation who are on small pensions, brought up during and just after the war who are used to living a good healthy life on smaller amounts of plainer food than many people think is normal for today. Many of these people would possibly appreciate a little extra if we could only persuade them to get vouchers and come to the centre. This generation is very reluctant to ask for help. At the other end of the scale, there are the children who are on free school meals during term time, but during holidays don’t necessarily get a decent lunch. These children need our help. We are, therefore, always looking at ways to reach more people, which is why we have decided to open a new Distribution Centre in Boston Spa at Deepdale Community Centre. This will be led by The King’s Church and will operate every Monday morning from 10am – 12pm. As a Foodbank we are blessed by generous gifts of food and time through volunteering, we do, however, require more support financially. The financial cost of running a foodbank is small and therefore would only require 240 people to commit to donating £5 a month, that’s only £1.15 a week. If you would like to help in this way, then please visit our website wetherbyanddistrict.foodbank.org.uk and click the red donate button. For more information contact the Project Manager Claire Fleetwood 07840455725 clairefoodbank@gmail.com.

Many thanks to all those who turned up to clean the Church cobwebs from on high have been swept away and dust from ages past banished for at least another year!

DRIVER REQUIRED for the The Monday Club Many of our patrons are finding it difficult to get to the Village Hall for our monthly meetings. We urgently need a Driver of Two who can collect them at about 1.15 pm and transport to the Village Hall and to be on hand just after 3.00 to take them home. Your reward will be a cup of tea! It is a great shame that some of our loyal supporters can no longer join in with the Monday Club. For further information please ring Mavis 842321.

Do you know that it is less than 4 months until Christmas Day? Following the small but very successful 2017 Christmas Day lunch at the Village Hall, we are already organising a similar event for 2018. Last year we had a mum and daughter, a father and son, a married couple, two friends, and several single people, some of whom knew each other; some who didn’t. What they all had in common was that they would have been on their own on Christmas Day. Several of them were spending other days with family and friends but not Christmas Day. This is not about charity, or who can or can’t pay. This is about you and your partner or carer or parent or child or sibling or friend not being on your own on Christmas Day. Don’t be shy, get in touch and book you Christmas Day lunch with those in similar circumstances to you. And you won’t have to do the washing up either!! You can contact Santa’s little elves by phone (07398 244634 or 01937 849455) or by email at bramhamvh@outlook.com.

HAVE YOU ANY OLD PENS? Recycle your old plastic pens here!! Bramham School has this week been accepted on the Terracycle Writing Instrument Recycling Programme as a Community Collection Point. This is GOOD NEWS as lots of benefits: 1

2 3 4

You can recycle old/dead/unwanted pens, felt tips, highlighters, markers—ANY BRAND OR TYPE—so plastic waste not going in bin to landfill, rather made into new things like plant pots and benches. Each item collected raises money for our village school. Shows our children to be responsible with plastic and it being recycled. So PLEASE GET COLLECTING— rummage through drawers, cupboards at home and bring your old, unwanted pens, felt tips, highlighters, pen lids (not pencils) to the collection box in school. Please ask people at your work to collect too—ideally create a collection box for colleagues. Spread the word locally for people to bring their old pens, etc to the school—it really is a community collection point. Any Q;s please do ask me. Thank you Georgina Mills

CHURCHYARD

One flower pot per grave

We are extremely fortunate to have a small band of people who cut the grass on a regular basis. However it is very inconvenient to have extra plant pots and ornaments on the grave plot. Another hazard is glass, this is very dangerous for the people cutting the grass, also one or two people are putting gravel near the Ashes Garth, this is dangerous for anyone using a strimmer. Please do not leave glass or gravel in the churchyard. The contents of the large sacks in the grave yard are sent for compost and other items should not be placed in these sacks. Therefore Dog excrement, glass and plastic is a major nuisance. Please take this home and place in your own dustbins.

ORGAN FUND APPEAL You will have noticed how the fund raising is gradually creeping up to the target figure, our grateful thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund. If you can help us with the shortfall please do get in touch. Or send a cheque for All Saints Church VCC to the Treasurer Jo Wilkinson at 41 Firbeck Road. 34
