Here I am again - fighting fit and full of fettle, as my Mum used to say! You may have seen me striding round the villages with a smile on my face as I walk to places I have not walked to for 15 years. Yes, that’s right, 15years! As I set to, writing this letter and realising it will be the last half of Lent and Easter day when you read this I thought I would give you some of my thoughts from the last six weeks of recovery; comparing the journey through my knee operation with the journey through Lent to Easter. I hope you don’t find it too contrived! Arthritis of the knee joint will not get better on its own, and that leads to the certain knowledge that an operation, however painful, must be faced. We, as Christians, know that we have to go through Lent, however painful, and we must face the journey and reflections if we wish to mature in our faith. Before the operation day there are arrangements to be made; milk to be cancelled, help to be sought, bag to be packed and sticks to be taken with you. As Lent approaches there are pancakes to be made, thought to be given to how much we will give to/ up and a book to take with us through the weeks. The operation day is a source of anxiousness, but a sense that a change has arrived. Ash Wednesday has a sense of great change as well. If you manage to get to a service with the imposition of ashes you can see the great change that is marked out at the beginning of the season.
The next six weeks are busy for the recovering patient and the active Christian. The patient has exercises to be done regularly, stitches to be removed, appointments to be kept, walking to be practised and more exercises! The Christian has exercises to do regularly:- giving to and/or giving up to be done daily, bad habits to be removed, appointments with spiritual reading, lectures, services and talks, prayer and reflection to be practised and more exercising of self-restraint, reading and reflection. At the end of six weeks there will be an appointment with the surgeon and a realisation for the patient that even if there is still some pain it is nothing like the arthritic pain suffered before; a feeling of moving into a new outlook on life.

As Lent draws to a close the Christians meet with the events of Holy Week. Modern day Christians know that however much pain they feel through those days there is a feeling of moving towards a new outlook on life. My personal recovery period takes a great step forward now as I acknowledge the gift of skill and patience from my surgeon and his team as I return to work. The joy of feeling like a human being again and not a shuffling hedgehog, old before my time!
Easter brings its own great step forward with an acknowledgement of our Lord’s great gift to us; the glorious resurrection. The joy of knowing his love for us through the crucifixion and rising of Jesus is beyond measure. Of course as a recovering patient I know it takes twelve months to be fully fit again. There will be more exercises to complete and a belief in the end result. I must look at the world with a smile on my face and a freedom in my step. What will this freedom from pain allow me to do? I will walk down the village on Palm Sunday in the parade of witness for the first time in many, many years. I will be able to walk down the churchyard at St. Mary’s on Easter morning at 5.30am and greet the dawn of Easter Day. The next twelve months of Christian life will still take exercise and belief. I will need to look at the world with a smile on my face and a freedom in my step. Lent will have helped me to greet the joy of Easter with a belief that this faith of ours is worth sharing with others. I hope I meet you on this task. Have a joyous Easter and blessings to you all.

Your responses will inform our decision regarding enhancements. SPEED LIMITS AND PARKING BY THE SCHOOL: The Parish Council, along with Ward Cllrs Gerald Wilkinson and Alan Lamb, are continuing to put pressure on Leeds City Council Highways to make a full assessment and introduce speed limits. We are as frustrated as residents that nothing happens quickly! Please be assured we’re not giving up. POOPER SCOOPER POSTERS!: A huge thank you to Georgina Mills from Friends of Bramham School, and the Cubs, Beavers and Brownies for their competition to design new anti- dog fouling posters. All of the entries were excellent. The 3 winners are: 1st prize - Eddie McCormick - 1st Clifford Beavers - age 6 2nd prize - Lucy Alice Skipper - 1st Bramham Brownies - age 10 3rd prize - Nell Meadley - 1st Clifford Cubs - age 8. Well done! The Parish Council has awarded vouchers as prizes and has commissioned new signs using the designs. See the website for some photos. PARISH COUNCIL REPORT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13. From some comments received it seems that some residents are under the impression that the Parish Council has the power to approve or prevent development. This is not the case, although the PC gives a view to Leeds City Council planners it is not always taken on board. For example we did object to the Woodyard site stating that we preferred smaller, affordable housing, but nevertheless it went ahead. However, an adopted Neighbourhood Plan, which includes the wish for affordable housing, will have more influence.
Next Meeting: Wednesday 5 April, 7.30 pm, in the Pavilion. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. MEMORIES OF BRAMHAM SCHOOL
Bramham Primary School celebrates its 50th anniversary this school year. If you (or your children) attended Bramham Primary, the children and Friends of Bramham School would like to hear your school time memories, so we can collate information to share with the current pupils. We would love to see any old school photos, reports, school work - any memorabilia you may have. We would like to make a display celebrating '50 years of Bramham Primary' at the school's Golden Summer Fair on Saturday 24 June. Everyone in the village or who used to attend school is invited to attend and join in the 50th Anniversary celebrations. If you are happy to share your memories, please contact Friends of Bramham School on 07934 350891 or friendsofbramhamschool@gmail.com. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you! Friends of Bramham School
APPEAL TO DOG OWNERS Our village currently has a lot of dog excrement along footpaths and verges. Please can you keep your dogs on the lead and in sight when walking along paths and past houses? There are many bins available so please pick up the DOG POO and put it in a bin! Other residents are getting fed up of cleaning up after dogs they do not own.
It is also very unhygienic and there are lots of small children living here. The ginnels seem to be one of the most affected areas due to poor lighting and people letting their dogs wander ahead of them. Please can you be extra vigilant when walking through the ginnel to the playing fields and the Cropstones / Town Hill ginnel? Many thanks in advance A resident of Cropstones, Bramham See page 34 winners of the Children’s Poster competition.

BEATING THE BOUNDS Saturday 22nd April 2017 Bramham is delighted to be beating the bounds of its parish shortly and all villagers, their friends and families are invited to join us on this lovely walk. Beating the Bounds is an ancient custom where a group of old and young members of the community walk the boundaries of the parish. Please note – we start from Bramham School. The following lists the stages of the walk. It is intended that participants start off as a single group and try to maintain the group over the 6 stages. This is to simplify the logistics involved in marshalling the walkers and providing the transport to and from the stage start/end points. It is also felt that walkers being involved with a single group will benefit from the camaraderie engendered when walking together. So you may walk all 6 stages or simply select one or more as suits your abilities and join the stage you want at the appropriate start time shown below. A short description of each stage is described. These are intended to give an idea of the environment of the routes which may vary with weather conditions.
Wanted a second volunteer Car Driver to be at Stage 2, 3 and 4
STAGE ONE: Bramham School to Newton Kyme – 8.30 am start (prompt) – 2.8 miles . This stage involves climbing over 6 stiles. STAGE TWO: Newton Kyme to Toulston Lane – 10.00 am start – 1.66 miles – transport leaves village square .9,45 am - ( park at the old paper mill )

The longest stage at 4 miles, but no climbing of stiles and good walking conditions
At the end of this stage we are invited to have our picnic lunches in the garden of Terry Lug Farmhouse. STAGE FIVE: Terry Lug to Junction of Dalton Lane and Compton Lane – 1.30 pm start – 2 miles – transport leaves village square 1.15 pm STAGE SIX: Compton Lane to The Village Hall –2.30 pm start – 2 miles – transport leaves village square 2.15 pm (Dalton Lane is a farm access track so be careful where you park – walkers doing the last stage only could be dropped off at Wattlesyke) TRANSPORT: Will be available to take participants to the stage starting and ending points.
