Clergy Letter from Rec’d Stanley Menzies Easter is described by the Church as the Queen of festivals yet it receives far less attention than Christmas today. We exchange the odd card, buy Easter eggs for the children and enjoy the holiday break but its religious importance has lessened. The Christmas story is more easily accepted and adapted to our lifestyles whereas Easter begins with the death and the graveyard and three women finding an empty tomb and being afraid. Paul Tillich illustrates this when he writes;” Our Christian symbols have lost a great deal of their power because they are too frequently repeated and too superficially used. It has been forgotten that the manger of Christmas was the expression of utter poverty and distress before it became the place where angels appeared and to which the star pointed. And it has been forgotten that the tomb of Jesus was the end of His life and work before it became the place of His final triumph.” Easter is the climax of the greatest story ever told and the fulfilment of God’s purpose. It is the event that assures us of hope, life and the faithfulness of God. Easter morning begins with the faithful women coming to the tomb, finding it empty and being told shattering news by a stranger that he is not here; he is risen and gone ahead of you to Galilee. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. There are all sorts of reasons for their fear; graveyards have that effect; their beloved leader had been killed and they could not trust anybody. But the real reason for their fear was the resurrection. He is risen and that blew their minds as it was unbelievable even if they recalled how often he said he would overcome death. Now on that first Easter Day the pattern of life and death was broken for ever and

these women knew that and were frightened. Who would not be before such an event? It’s no surprise they said nothing to anyone and went back inside the house. Tom Wright captures this moment when he writes;” Easter is meant to be a surprise. It is certainly not a happy ending it’s a shocking new beginning.” The story is not over, in truth a new chapter is beginning for the bonds of death have been broken and a new way of living and of being human is disclosed to the world. It took the women and the disciples some time to come to terms with this new beginning and then they understood their vocation to the world and its people. If we are to come to terms with the Easter event it will take us some time and reflection before we understand our vocation to our families, our neighbours, the world and its people. The faith, hope and love of Easter have inspired people to go out to do good and build communities where individuals are cherished and loving kindness is practised. Today this vocation has never been more essential. As we journey to the future the challenges facing humanity are daunting: economic fragility, climate change, extinction of species and the power and savagery of terrorism alongside carelessness and irresponsibility. We need to take time to reflect, to listen and be silent. Then we may accept our vocation to live creatively, to love and care for our fragile planet and commit all our being to the future of our children and their children. Easter is the queen of festivals but it is so much more and calls us to a new beginning and a new way of living. May we live as Easter people. Stanley

Saturday April 18th 2015 Bramham is delighted to be beating the bounds of its parish shortly and all villagers, their friends and families are invited to join us on this lovely walk. Beating the Bounds is an ancient custom where a group of old and young members of the community walk the boundaries of the parish. Please note – we start from the Village Hall. The following describes the stages of the walk and should be read in conjunction with the attached map showing the route around the local area. It is intended that participants start off as a single group and try to maintain the group over the 6 stages. This is to simplify the logistics involved in marshalling the walkers and providing the transport to and from the stage start/end points. It is also felt that walkers being involved with a single group will benefit from the camaraderie engendered when walking together. So you may walk all 6 stages or simply select one or more as suits your abilities and join the stage you want at the appropriate start time shown below. A description of each stage is given below. These are intended to give an idea of the environment and walking conditions for each stage, they are not a detailed description of the routes which may vary with weather conditions on the day.

STAGE ONE: Bramham Village Hall to Newton Kyme – 8.30 am start (prompt) – 2.8 miles (walk to or park at the Village Hall ) STARTING FROM THE VILLAGE HALL we walk to Bramham School where we cross the road and walk through the woods following Carr Beck until we reach Windmill Road which we follow until turning right along the edge of the fields. We then take a left over stiles to reach Bar Lane when we turn left on the road for a short distance then following a footpath on the right which takes us along the side of Carr Beck again until we reach the A659 Boston Spa road. We take the footpath towards Boston Spa for a short distance then cross the road and follow a track down to the River Wharfe. We walk along the side of the river until reaching the old Wharfe Bridge where we turn right and follow a footpath which takes us into Newton Kyme and the car park in front of the old paper mill. This stage is picturesque, some walking on paths and involves climbing over 6 stiles. STAGE TWO: Newton Kyme to Toulston Lane – 10.15 am start – 1.66 miles – transport leaves village square 10.00 am - ( park at the old paper mill ) We recommence the walk from Newton Kyme heading back along the footpath towards Clifford, crossing the A659 onto Bar Lane again when we then take a footpath on the left which heads south in a direct line to meet Toulston Lane. There is 1 stile to climb and the views on the walk are looking towards Bramham and Clifford over open countryside. The walking should be easy with a slight incline to tackle towards the end. 7 STAGE THREE: Toulston Lane to Spen Lane End 1.74 miles. 11.00 am start. Transport leaves village square 10.45 am - (park on Warren Lane). Probably the easiest stage, involving walking along the surfaced roads of Warren Lane and Spen Common Lane passing Headley Cottages and Headley Hall. STAGE FOUR: Spen Lane End to Terry Lug through Bramham Park . 4miles. 11.45 am start.Transport leaves village square 11.30am - ( park at Spen Lane end) We now have the opportunity, thanks to the kindness of Nick Lane Fox, to enjoy some of the scenery of Bramham Park not normally seen by walkers following the prescribed routes through Bramham Park. We take the ‘flyover’ from Spen Lane into the park and head into Black Fen woods. From there we take in the views of the house and gardens and follow the tracks around the gardens and head into the woods of the Lendrick Hills and then down to the stage end at Terry Lug. Here we are invited to have lunch on the lawn of Terry Lugg House. The longest stage at 4 miles, but no climbing of stiles and good walking conditions. STAGE FIVE: Terry Lug to Junction of Dalton Lane and Compton Lane – 1.30 pm start – 2 miles – transport leaves village square 1.15 pm ( park at Terry Lug ) Now on the return leg we leave Terry Lug, cross Thorner road and walk down hill on the track to pass the lake on our left. We turn right onto a little used path and head north through well grassed fields to reach Wothersome medieval village and then uphill to Thorner Lane. Crossing over we then find the Roman Road of Dalton Lane which takes us on easy walking to the junction with Compton lane. Maybe 2 stiles to climb but otherwise good walking in interesting woodland. Dalton Lane could be muddy ! STAGE SIX: Compton Lane to The Village Hall –2.30 pm start – 2 miles – transport leaves village square 2.15 pm (Dalton Lane is a farm access track so be careful where you park – walkers doing the last stage only could be dropped off at Wattlesyke) Turning right off Dalton Lane we see a good downhill path heading to the A1 and the new link road which we cross and then follow the new cycle track towards Bramham taking a left turn to head towards the school, and then to The Village Hall and our walks end. Very easy walking. TRANSPORT: Will be available to take participants to the stage starting and ending points. The vehicles will depart from the VILLAGE SQUARE at the times shown above. To return to the village square after your walk simply take the transport waiting at the stage end. You can of course make your own arrangements to be dropped off and picked up at the stage start/end points which are all on routes out of Bramham. Please note that stage times are estimates and may vary on the day. CLOTHING: Please ensure that you are correctly dressed, have good strong footwear and that you have food and drink with you to last the duration of the walk. Continued on page 9

Stepping Stones The children who attended Stepping Stones in April spent their time making beautiful flowers for Mothers Day out of egg boxes…. the adults cut the cup parts out of the egg boxes and the children added pipe cleaners to the ends and painted them. They also made some really colourful tissue paper pompom flowers – it was a real hive of creativity in the church!

After refreshments, Kate Kennedy the Youth Coordinator for the Parish talked to the children about the 10 Commandments, she also taught the children a game which helped to remember them – and it worked because they were able to show the congregation what they had learnt on Sunday at the Family Service.

Any child is welcome to attend Stepping Stones regardless whether they attend any Church or not. It is just a nice way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Thursday 2nd April, 5.30pm at All Saints Church – it will be our Easter special and there will be an Easter egg hunt and various craft activities. 13 BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund was created in 2003 to distribute the monies available to Bramham as a result of the Leeds Festival. It was set up by the owners of Bramham Park and the promoter (originally Mean Fiddler, now Festival Republic). About two thirds of the money has come from donations made by residents obtaining heavily discounted tickets for the event and the other third is a donation from the promoter. Every year, a committee under the chairmanship of Nick and Rachel Lane Fox and on which the Parish Council is represented, meets to consider applications for grants from community organisations. Since the Fund was set up, it has made grants of over £250,000. The objective of the Fund is generally to support community projects and these must benefit the residents of Bramham. The Fund does not support commercial activities or private individuals. At a meeting on 10th March, the committee agreed to make grants towards the following projects: Bramham Parish Council Bramham Parish Council Bramham Parish Council Bramham Drama Group Bramham Football Club Community Action Group Bramham In Bloom Village Archive project Bramham Senior Citizens

Final building work on pavilion Children’s playground refurbishment Outdoor gym equipment Replacement dimmer Benches outside pavilion Christmas lighting motifs Stone trough for The Square Large document scanning Support for Monday Club

£25000 £11800 £10000 £4000 £2000 £1400 £1200 £200 £200

The Fund also supports the shuttle bus between the village and the festival and the ticket administration costs. It is expected that the committee will meet next March to consider grants from the 2015 Leeds Festival. An announcement will be made in the magazine and any community organisation wishing to apply for a grant will be required to submit an application no later than 14 February 2016. Pavilion Official Opening – with Melvin Benn of Festival Republic! The official opening of the pavilion will be Saturday 25th April, 12.00 noon. Please see separate ad in this magazine for details of the event. For pavilion bookings please call 07731 822562

Annual Parish Meeting: The Annual Parish meeting will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th April, in the Village Hall. This is different from a Parish Council meeting in that it is a meeting of the parish, but chaired by the Council Chairman. Residents can speak at the meeting and vote on any resolutions proposed at the meeting. The agenda normally includes the Chairman’s report, financial summary, and reports from the police, the church, and village groups. Anyone wishing to ask for specific agenda items should contact the clerk by 6 April. The Chairman makes the final decision on agenda items. Please come along everyone is welcome.

Playground: We know that so many of you are very excited about our fantastic new playground that has been built on the playing fields on Freely Lane. The cold and wet weather has meant that the re-seeded grassed area hasn’t grown sufficiently as yet and we therefore decided to delay the opening until Thursday 2nd April for both health and safety of our children. We are sorry for the delay but it will be worth the wait, and the opening will be in time for the Easter holidays! The contractor will continue to re-seed the grass after the opening until it is right. Leeds Festival: The time has come round again to start planning for Leeds Festival arriving in Bramham in August. Ticket applications have commenced and the deadline for submitting your forms is Thursday 16th April. Application forms are available from the Village shop and on the website (see below). Criteria is as in previous years, and again there are a limited number of nominated tickets for non-residents. The price is £42 including the bus. Full details are provided with the application forms. Continued on page 27

Parish Council Elections: The current council has been in place for almost 4 years and this year the whole Parish Council is up for election (this is known as an ‘ordinary election’). The closing date for nominations (to Leeds Electoral Office) is 9th April and we do hope that any resident who is interested in joining the council will consider putting in a nomination. If there are more candidates than places an election will be held on 7th May. For more information you can contact the Electoral Office, or our clerk. Current councillors would also be happy to talk to you informally about what is involved.

Playing field and dog fouling: The playing field is now in regular use by adult football teams and children’s football training. Dog fouling presents a health threat to everyone using the field. We know that the majority of dog owners act responsibly and bin the waste but unfortunately we have a minority that don’t and we ask you to please consider other field users. In the words of a young field user – ‘There is no poo fairy’! Please bin the poo or take it home, don’t expect other people to clear up after you.

Next Meeting: Next meeting is Wednesday 1st April, 7.30 pm, in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. 33 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Beer Festival 2015 – 3 October – make a note of the date This year’s beer festival will take place on 3rd October 2015 to coincide with the Rugby World cup. The plan is to show live matches during the festival, via a TV link, notably England v Australia at 8pm, but also S Africa V Scotland at 16.45. Many of our regulars would agree that watching a match whilst sinking a pint of real Yorkshire Ale is the ideal combination! However, there will also be live music for those with no interest in rugby. If anyone (or any business) wishes to sponsor the whole event, the glasses, the beer mats, or any of the barrels please contact any committee member for details (see some contacts below). External lighting and improved access from car park Several users have commented that the external lighting especially near the car park is poor. We have installed new lights outside the side entrance to the hall that are switched on by a push button mechanism. We have also installed high level lights to illuminate the car park. Access to the side door has been recognised as a problem and we have worked with various companies to identify alternatives including ramps or better steps. After due consideration the proposal is to remove the steps completely and to widen the path to provide improved access. Work will commence after Easter. Car parking at the hall The Village Hall car park is for users of the Village Hall and NOT for local residents to park their cars on a permanent basis (with the exception of two spaces at the far end of the car park that are for Cosy Cottage and No 1 Low Way). The committee has received reports from hall users who have been asked to remove their cars from certain spaces so that local residents can park their cars. The committee does not wish to implement parking restrictions, so asks that residents to please refrain from using the Hall car park. Bookings at the Hall We are already taking bookings for parties and events into 2016. If you know that you are likely to want to use the hall for your event, especially at weekend for children’s parties or evening events – birthdays, weddings etc, please contact committee via the bookings email (bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com) or telephone number (07432 330972) where a committee member can assist in making the booking. If you haven’t been in the hall for years, we can arrange for you to visit the hall to consider the amenities it offers – including the fabulous toilets!!! We can also provide a bar for your event (subject to availability) or you can provide your own – the hall is licenced for entertainment and for alcohol sales. Village Hall AGM The AGM for the Village hall will be held on Monday 11th May, 8pm in the Hall. All welcome. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT.

We have gone over 100!! We are proud to say that Bramham School has now crossed the threshold of 100 pupils and now stands at 101, with our three new admissions! A warm welcome to our new families! September is also promising to bring another full cohort of new children with all putting us as 1st choice!

We are smart swappers! Many people have no idea how much fat, salt and sugar there is in some of the things we eat throughout the day. So we are taking part in the Smart Swapathon to try and cut some from our diet. A smart swap may be to choose to drink a glass of milk rather than juice, eat a piece of fruit rather than a biscuit, or go for a ride on your scooter rather than sitting and watching TV. Can you make a Smart Swap each week? Each day? If you do don’t forget to put a counter in your class totalizer!! Daisy and Kayla add up class counters each Thursday and announce in celebration assembly how many swaps in total the school has made!!

Over Easter our parents will be joining Reverend Menzies and the children for a special school service at All Saints Church. We will also be having a fun Easter Egg competition and Raffle!

Our children joined Shadwell for the Marrick Priory Residential recently where they encountered all kinds of new challenges and adventures! The trip was a huge success and our Year 5’s can’t wait to get going on the next residential to Robinwood!

Watch out for Bramham children performing at the new Pavilion Event doing their “wake-up, shake-up” routine in April and also at the Bramham Gala in June! Visit our website www.bramhamprimary.co.uk

BRAMHAM BROWNIES NEEDS YOUR HELP…. Sam has been involved with and led Bramham Brownies for 7 years and Jenny is about to reach her 5 year anniversary of assisting with Bramham Brownies. Due to Sam’s working commitments and the fact that Jenny’s youngest daughter is about to leave Bramham Brownies means that they will both be leaving at the end of the school year (July 2015). They have both had a fantastic time with many fond memories and so it is with heavy hearts that they are stepping down. All of the events and activities at Bramham Brownies would not have been possible without the help and support of the wonderful parents throughout the years. There is currently a fantastic team of parent helpers and it is therefore hoped that someone will to step into the gap. All the current parents have been contacted and the reason for this notice is to see if there is anyone else in the village that would also like to step into the gap. Both Sam and Jenny have committed to be available for help and advice and there is a whole Girl Guiding network locally, regionally and nationally that is available too. If you are interested and want to know more, please contact Sam on 07984672624. The sooner a new team comes forward the smoother the transition will be for the Brownies after July 2015. 37 Effective exercises for older people in conjunction with Home Instead Senior Care… Everyone knows that it’s good to exercise to stay fit and healthy, but with adults aged 65 and over spending an average of 10 hours a day sitting down, maintaining an exercise regime is vital. Whilst you should check with your doctor before engaging in any kind of exercise, the following are simple, low-intensity NHS-recommended exercises which can still make a difference to your health and wellbeing: •

To develop and maintain upper back flexibility, sit on a chair and cross your arms with your hands on your shoulders. Using just your upper body, twist to the left and hold for five seconds before twisting to the right.

To stretch your calves, place both hands against a wall and, keeping both feet flat, bend one leg whilst stepping the other behind you, keeping it straight. You will feel the stretch in the straightened leg. Repeat with the opposite leg and alternate three times.

To strengthen leg muscles place your hands on the back of a chair and stand with your feet hip-width apart. Slowly bend your knees as far as you can, keeping your back straight. Slowly raise yourself up and repeat five times.

To improve and maintain balance, face a wall and stretch your arms out so that your fingertips touch the wall. Lift one leg, keeping the other one slightly bent, and hold for five to ten seconds. Repeat three times for each leg. For further help and advice please contact Margaret Brennan, owner of local Wetherby-based at home care company Home Instead Senior Care. Email margaret.brennan@homeinstead.co.uk or call 01937 220510.

38 HARVEST CELEBRATION WEEKEND This year we would like our celebration of harvest to be a truly Village occasion with as many groups and organisations as possible taking part. The celebrations will be held in the Church and Village Hall on the

10th and 11th October and ideas, contributions and support are welcomed. We have formed a small group to plan the weekend and they would be grateful for active involvement in the event. BRAMHAM FOOTBALL CLUB The Saturday team are continuing to keep up their push for a top 6 finish but inconsistency is keeping them from challenging for the top 4. The Sunday 1st team are continuing their unbeaten march towards the Division 2 title and are in a cup final on the 29th of March. They are also in a final on Sunday April 12th at Wetherby Athletic , 11ko. The reserves are ending their season well, and are also in a cup final on Sunday 22nd of March. It has been good to see the support the three Bramham sides are attracting from the people in the village, and the bonus if you can attend on a Sunday is bacon sandwiches, tea coffee and other light refreshments are available. Yours in sport, Dave

39 THE CRIME PREVENTION PANEL OUTER NORTH EAST LEEDS Do you like helping your community? Do you have a few hours to spare? The Crime Prevention Panel is a friendly group of volunteers from the areas listed above who, in conjunction with serving Officers from West Yorkshire Police, provide advice regarding personal and home safety. There are bi-monthly Panel meetings at Wetherby and the group regularly go out and about giving talks on Crime Prevention, including some simple, inexpensive, measures that you can take to make your home more secure. Working on a rota basis, the volunteers attend many Community Events, handing out leaflets full of good advice and selling small security items. Due to its own success, the Panel is looking for more volunteers. If you are interested in joining the Crime Prevention panel, or would like more information, then please contact Maureen Brewer (Panel Chairman) on 01937 582441. THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION Our February speaker, Miss Veronica Bird, is a retired Prison Governor, mainly responsible for Women's prisons. She had many stories to tell and though some were sad or tragic, she enlivened her talk with touches of humour, captivating her audience so much so that she was still chatting with us as we enjoyed our post-talk tea and biscuits. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 15th April at 7.15 pm in the Village Hall, when the speaker will be Mrs C Neuff on “Spinning a Yarn” One of our more traditional events is our Annual Craft Competition for YCA members which includes classes for photography, poetry, card making, cross stitch, knitting, patchwork, floristry, painting, cookery. There are 103 branches in the Association and we were proud to receive seven awards. Lillian Barton received Best in Show for her craft interpretation of “There was an old women who lived in a shoe” We congratulate Lillian on this achievement. We welcome visitors to our meetings, so please do come and join us. Jean Dale

40 YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM JUDGING DAY THURSDAY 16th APRIL 2015 As you can see our Judging Day has been set for THURSDAY 16th APRIL. Please Note that the timing for the Judges to visit Bramham has been changed this year to the afternoon, and we should be in the Square approximately 3.00 - 3.30 pm. As usual the Judges would like to see gardeners and residents who can be available and we look forward to seeing you there. For those on the judging route, posters will be supplied as usual a week before, so please display them in your window. It is important that our village is looking its best! To that end could we all take time to tidy our flower beds, verges, baskets and containers in readiness for the BIG DAY ? The hard working Bramham in Bloom volunteers who plant and maintain our lovely flower beds around the village need your help to assist with a “ litter-pick” in preparation for the Yorkshire in Bloom Judging Day. For some years now the judges have made a special mention of the absence of litter. So PLEASE can you spare a couple of hours? - less if we have many hands - on

SATURDAY 11th APRIL from 10.30 am meeting in The Square. Waste sacks and litter “grabbers” will be provided and the waste can be disposed of by individual pickers. Most helpers might like to collect litter in pairs so bring family members with you, good way of earning pocket money! The judges take the overall appearance of the village into account. As we have said many times, it is Bramham that is being judged not just Bramham in Bloom. A huge Thank You to Mike Corrigan and Paul Marshall for assisting with the construction and siting of the new Bramham in Bloom planter outside Folly Allotments on Aberford Road. Michael Rhodes supplied the split larch logs and the Folly Allotment Association have been kind enough to sponsor the planter. A Bramham in Bloom plaque will be featured on the front of the planter in due course. Let us begin another successful year with Bramham in Bloom and perhaps be able to maintain our Gold Award of 2014!! Please send me your email address and/or telephone number if you think you are able to help on SATURDAY 11th APRIL with the LITTER PICK. 10.30 am in The Square. 41 PASTA PARTY IN AID OF THE BRATHAY TRUST RAISES OVER £2000!! Thank you to everyone for your support Thank you to Fiona Henderson & NSPCC ladies kind donation of event equipment we were able to transform the village hall into a stunning charity ball. Just over 100 guests attended the event & their generosity far outweighed all expectations. The cancan girls returned as The Fusilli Follies, & opened the show with another fun & frivolous performance & got the evening off to a great start. The after dinner speaker was Chris Heaton who wowed the audience with his tales of derring do, including 30 marathons in 30 days & a marathon across frozen Lake Baikal in Siberia. 26 young people from Brathay also attended to help on the evening & perform a wide variety of songs, played the guitar & performed a Michael Jackson inspired dance routine. There was a pasta supper cooked by four local “master chefs”, followed by a sumptuous selection of deserts, all lovingly prepared by Simon & Sue Jones. A big thank you to everyone who supported the event in whatever way. The team of people & their kindness & enthusiasm who came together to make this event possible was incredible. What a difference £2000 will make to those fabulous young people we had the pleasure to meet at the event. A very humbling experience for me as organiser . Alison Mackie and Kate McIntyre

Thought for the month The more you say, the less people remember Francois Fenelon

YOUR MONTHLY SMILE As Mary left a meeting, she desperately gave herself a personal search. She was looking for her keys. They were not in her pockets. A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing. Suddenly she realized she must have left them in the car. Frantically, she headed for the car park. Her husband had scolded her many times for leaving the keys in the ignition. Her theory was the ignition is the best place not to lose them. His theory is that the car will be stolen. As she scanned the car park she came to a terrifying conclusion! His theory was right. The car park was empty. Mary immediately called the police. She gave them her location, confessed that she had left her keys in the car and that it had been stolen. Then she made the most difficult call of all to her husband "Hello my love", she stammered; she always call him "My Love" in times like these. "I left my keys in the car, and it has been stolen." There was a period of silence. She thought the call had disconnected, but then she heard his voice. He barked, "I dropped you off!" Now it was her time to be silent. Embarrassed, she said, "Well, come and get me." He retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this policeman I have not stolen your car." This is what they call, " the Golden Years!"
