Clergy Letter from Rev’d Peter Bristow Walking and Talking. Meeting and Greeting. It has long been recognised that the best form of pastoral contact is meeting individuals personally and through the very act of meeting, sharing something of the love of God for them. Much of Jesus’ own ministry was done outdoors, in the streets, market places and in the homes of people. He addressed crowds but he frequently focussed his words and actions on individuals, especially through his healing ministry. It was essentially a person to person ministry. Churches Together is launching a joint pastoral visiting initiative in all our local villages. In twos, preferably from two different churches, we will visit on one evening each month. This is something we can easily do together and it takes Christ’s love and the fellowship of the churches directly to people’s homes. We will knock on doors and simply say ‘hello’ from Churches Together and ask those we meet if there is anything they would like us to pray about. We will give them a simple prayer card which will also include basic contact information about the local churches. We are not ‘selling’ or ‘promoting’ anything, other than making contact and giving individuals the prayer card and contact information. The evening session will be strictly time limited and last no more than two hours, including getting to and from the place we start and finish at. The
evening will begin with us all meeting together to pray. We will then go out, in twos, for about one hours visiting. Whether we visit one or two houses or two dozen matters not. What does matter is that Christian people from the local churches make friendly contact with the people of our villages. The evening will conclude with the ‘visitors’ saying Night Prayer together. We must see this visiting ministry as a long term project and it is recognised it will take several years to knock on all our villages’ doors and this will only be done in particular months on the lighter evenings of summer, probably from May to September. Please think seriously about joining in. You do not have to be a member of one of our existing congregations, but just have a heart for meeting and greeting on behalf of all the Christian churches who are part of Churches Together. No particular skills are required other than a willingness to share the love of Christ gently and courteously. As we walk together from different churches and traditions we will hopefully also share something of our own lives and faith with each other. After the Resurrection Jesus came alongside two dispirited disciples as they walked to Emmaus after His crucifixion (Luke Ch.24 vv.13-35). He opened the Scriptures to them and later when he broke bread with them they recognised Him. This meeting healed and transformed them. Continued on page 5

Today, Jesus acts through our eyes, ears, hands and feet. No one stands outside His love or His call. In a small but very effective way we can gently bring the light of Christ to people who have perhaps forgotten He has come for them. If you are interested in joining the Churches Together Emmaus walkers please
contact one of the clergy or your local Churches Together representative who are: Gerald Payling (Chair), Tony Chalk (Treasurer), Jane Clayton, Katie Collins, Mike Suggate, Jillian Lawson and Doreen Lister. 40TH ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY A very big thank you to all those of you who were able to join with me to give thanks for 40 years of ordained ministry. It was very pleasing to see people from all our churches coming together for this great occasion. Thank you also for your many cards and letters. It was lovely to celebrate on the actual date and at the very hour I was ordained priest 40 years ago at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King in Liverpool. Thank you too for the wonderful welcome you gave to my family and friends from Lancashire, Cheshire, Oxford, London and Scotland. Particular thanks go to several people who did a lot of work in preparation for the day. Joy Bowers co-ordinated the food preparation and what a feast it was ! On the day Joy was kindly assisted by Pat Canning, Jill Coates, Emily Gaussen and especially Jennifer Wormald. A big thank you to all who kindly provided the wonderful food items. Mike Bowers looked after aspects of the practical arrangements assisted on the day by David Coates, Jim Canning and Terry Gaussen. Glenda Webb produced the service sheets and the lovely prayer book marks. Catherine Webb renovated and up-dated the Incumbents Board in St. Mary’s using her own hand cut lettering. Thank you to Rev. Andy Grant for leading the short children’s section and reminding us about the importance of team work which has been a particular feature of my own ministry and to Canon Brian Gant who spoke about the ‘Kumasi’ connection. A very big thank you to Steve Aston and St. Mary’s Choir who were supported on the day with additional choristers from York. I thought the music and choir was stunning. From a time perspective I was a little apprehensive about having the great Christian hymn of Thanksgiving, the Te Deum, sung by the Choir just before the blessing. I need not have worried, it was a memorable tour de force of the famous setting by Stanford. Steve was also supported by the playing Max Elliott and John Townend. The service also included a presentation and goodbye to Cathy and Bob Dibben whose final Sunday it was in the Benefice. Most of you will be aware that I did not wish to receive any personal gifts and I decided that each parish and church would raise funds for a local project in my honour and for Bishop Cyril’s Water Well, in the Diocese of Kumasi, Ghana. This fund raising is ongoing. So for those of you who would still like to make a contribution there are special envelopes in each of the churches for the projects are as follows: All Saints, Bramham; altar linen and oil filled candles. St Mary’s, Boston Boston; audio visual equipment. St. Peter’s, Walton, the installation of a hearing aid loop. All Saints, Thorp Arch; the refurbishment of the wooden chairs. Each of these projects will receive two thirds of the funds raised with the remaining third going towards Bishop Cyril’s water well. It was the first time a large gathering used the newly renovated St. Mary’s room and our current problem of an echo disappeared with all the presence of so many people ! Finally, a big than you to Debbie and to all my children and grandchildren for their love and support over the years, all of whom were stars on the day with their help and welcome. The Diocese has granted me sabbatical leave from the last week of July to the beginning of October during which I am doing a couple of courses, going on retreat, having a holiday and doing some project work on the deanery marriage preparation programme and our Benefice Baptism preparation material. During this period it will be business as usual and my colleagues, clergy and church wardens, will be looking after the parishes and churches With renewed thanks for your kindness. Please pray for me. Enjoy your holidays.
Fr. Peter
Discoverers @ Bramham July’s Discoverers was all about The Good Samaritan. The children drew the characters from the story onto paper plates and then acted out the tale to each other – they had lots of fun, especially making the baddies look really scary! Please note, Discoverers will not run during the school holidays, we will meet again in September - an email with date, time etc will be emailed to those on the mailing list, if you do not receive it then please feel free to email one of the organisers below. We hope you have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing everyone in September. Please contact Lisa Revolta - lisa@lisarevolta.com Emma Hunter – emmaandpaul8@hotmail.com or Jennie Saynor – Jen@saynor.me.uk if you would like more details about Discoverers. These events are open to all regardless of whether you attend any Church or not, they are held on the 2nd Sunday of the Month. It is simply a way to meet other families in the community with young children, all are welcome. We politely ask for a voluntary donation of £1 per child. Jennie Saynor

July 2013 Update ....communica ng with residents To all Bramham residents Here is the update from our July Parish Council meeting: Bramham Gala: Thank you to Cllr Keith Innocent and the Community Action Group for another fantastic gala. Keith and the group put in an enormous amount of work, all on a voluntary basis. The Parish Council really does appreciate this, and is sure that residents do too. Playground: Repairs to the playground have been made and we are pleased that the closure to enable this was short. Thank you for your patience. We are now in the process of obtaining estimates for re-vamping the playground and investigating funding sources. Leeds Festival: Ticket allocations are complete. If any residents are not going to be using their tickets please email Cllr Henderson fhendersonbpc@gmail.com so that they can be allocated to someone else. Tickets will be delivered during the week before the festival. The bus will run between mid-day and 3 a.m. Please note that Festival Republic have advised that there will be the same restrictions on taking alcohol into the residents area as last year. Home Fire Safety Checks: Wetherby Fire Station crew offer free home safety checks for residents. This takes about 30 Minutes, and the crew will discuss your home safety with, and provide free smoke alarms if needed. Please contact Blue Watch Commander Derek Milne on 01937 582222 or 07432126243, or email derek.milne@westyorkshirefire.gov.uk Path in Bramham Park: Please check the Parish Council website for up to date information regarding the opening of the new circular path. Recycling area: We are conscious of the problem of people leaving empty bags and boxes by the recycling bins and are asking Leeds City Council to ensure that the area is cleaned. However, we do appeal to residents not to leave the rubbish in the first place – please take your bags and boxes home with you. Website: Remember the Parish Council website is updated frequently with new information. The address is below – do visit the website for latest news on both Parish Council business and village events. Next Meeting: The next Council meeting will be held on Wednesday 4 September, 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. Residents are welcome to join us. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on our website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. Contact:

Pavilion & Playing Field Update ....communicaƟng with residents As you know the Parish Council has received legal advice that the previous purported lease to the BSLA of October 2008 is not valid and therefore there is no valid lease in place. The Parish Council agreed to offer the BSLA a new lease and a draft lease was submitted to the BSLA Directors (Nick Lane Fox, John Procter and Andrew Ellis) by the Parish Council’s solicitor for their approval on 17 April 2013. No response has been received. The Parish Council’s solicitor has also asked Leeds City Council as to whether it intends to exercise the option it holds over the strip of land adjacent to Freely Lane. Despite chasing letters no response has been received. In addition, the BSLA have not yet provided the Parish Council with the outstanding financial information which would conclude ‘due diligence’. The Parish Council recognises and shares residents’ frustration and concerns at the Pavilion standing unopened and has decided that it cannot allow this situation to continue indefinitely. We have taken further legal advice, and to bring matters to a conclusion the Parish Council has therefore given three months notice to the BSLA indicating that if within that period: •
The option has not been exercised by Leeds City Council within the option period (which expires on 10 September 2013), the purchase completed and sale proceeds received; and
•
The Parish Council’s due diligence requirements regarding the part of the sale proceeds (if received) to be paid to BSLA have not been satisfied; and
•
The lease offered has not been settled and completed
then the Parish Council will itself take over completion of the pavilion and its future operation. The Parish Council would invite residents to be part of a management committee. In addition the BSLA have been asked to let the Parish Council know immediately if they do not wish to continue with completion of the Pavilion or if they will be unable to meet any of the above conditions. Should that be the case then the Parish Council will assume control of the pavilion immediately. In the meantime residents should note that the Parish Council are advised that the BSLA have no estate or legal interest in the playing field and the Parish Council should be contacted regarding the use of or about any matter regarding the playing field. 17 THE RSCM NORTH OF ENGLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL 28TH SEPTEMBER 2013 - LEEDS TOWN HALL The Royal School of Church Music is organising a major regional festival at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 28th September this year. The service which will take place at 3 o’clock is entitled “The Whole Company of Heaven” and will be directed by Dr. Simon Lindley. This service will celebrate the northern heritage of choral music and include works by Jackson, Bullock, Bairstow, Dyson and Mawby as well as great hymns for the Feast of St Michael and All Angels. The Preacher at this event will be The Rt. Revd. Glyn Webster, Bishop of Beverley who during his time as a Canon at York was a great supporter of the RSCM and music generally. Parish singers from across the whole of the North of England will be joined by the Choirs of Wakefield, Bradford and Sheffield Cathedrals and the Minster Choirs of West and South Yorkshire. MAKE A NOTE IN YOUR DIARY
THE BRAMHAM RUNNING CLUB The running club is continuing to see a fantastic turn-out at the running club sessions. It’s great to see new runners really starting to see the benefits of running regularly with others… being in a group makes the time pass much faster and it’s a great way to socialise with new people. As I write we are approaching 22,000 miles for our team target just as we approach our 4 year birthday!
Local events to aim for… There are lots of running events going on in our local area, see below for a few that may take your fancy… Sunday 8th September: Wetherby 10km Sunday 22nd September: Yorkshire 10km run, Newby Hall Ripon Sunday 29th September: The Major Series North, Bramham Park Sunday 6th October: The Bramham Park Fun Run (5K or 10K) Sunday 3rd November: Guy Fawkes 10 Mile, Ripley Castle If you’d like to take up or get back into running, join us in the Square on… Tuesdays: 5.30pm – 2/3 miles powerwalking/running; 6.00pm – 4/5/6 mile routes Fridays: 5.30pm – a gentle circuit to ease you into the weekend Sundays: 10.00am – normally an off-road circuit, routes to suit all

19 MONDAY CLUB
Last month the Club was invited for afternoon tea and entertainment by teachers and students of Tadcaster Grammar School. The cakes were made by one of the teachers and were absolutely delicious! It was a lovely afternoon and enjoyed by all. There was a free raffle with some lovely prizes and lots of the group went home with beautiful vases of flowers. We would like to extend our thanks to the Headmaster, the Teachers involved and the Students who put on such a lovely afternoon for us.
There will be no meeting in the hall in August, but on
Monday 5th August a summer lunch has been arranged for all members at The Coffee Pot, Thorpe Arch for 1.30 pm. Lifts have been arranged
We are always looking for new people to swell our numbers, so if you are a senior citizen and would like to spend a social afternoon with entertainment, tea and cakes, please come along to our next meeting on Monday 2nd September, We are sure you will enjoy it.

25 BRAMHAM IN BLOOM Yorkshire in Bloom Judging Summer 2013 This year for once we had glorious weather and all the displays looked at their best. Many thanks to all the dedicated gardeners and helpers. If the judges enthusiasm for our displays was anything to go by we should have done OK. They did notice and comment on the fact that a number of private gardens had made a real effort to prepare for the judging, and also that from what they could see as they walked around there was no litter in the Village. Congratulations everybody !!! As usual they were particularly enthusiastic about ,The Church, The School, The Senior Citizens Garden and the general concentration of displays from the Garage back to the Square. The display put on by Karen and Neil at the Red Lion really does support Bramham in Bloom. They were also very pleased to see that the Mileage stone outside the Senior Citizens Centre had been renovated, it really is a piece of the history of the Village. Some specific comments :The School They were very impressed by the size of the grounds and the amenities available. Our young guides were tremendous being both knowledgeable and able to talk about their projects in an adult manner. Well done !!! The Church Who couldn’t be impressed by the Churchyard and the Church itself. It was hard to drag them away such was there enthusiasm for the creating of the wild life habitat and the splendour of the inside of the Church itself. Senior Citizens Centre and Garden There have been tremendous changes and the whole area is a real pleasure to look at and sit in. Very few Villages will have anything like this in the centre of the Village. Thanks to Frank Wood and his team. We now await the result usually towards the beginning of September Bramham in Bloom Committee

27 CHURCHYARD GRASS CUTTING Every year we have to cut the Churchyard Grass, we wait until August to take on this mammoth task. Can you help? We need people to cut the grass, rake it up and carry it away to the Tip? We had the help of eight people last year and they did the most fantastic job working all hours, but particularly on Saturday mornings during August. Some people came along in their own time and continued the cutting in specific areas. Please come along and help. Saturday mornings 10.00 am. If you have your own strimmer or rake bring that along with you. The more the merrier and the sooner we complete the task. Bramham Churchyard has been commended for its care and maintenance and its concern for wildlife and wildflowers in the only natural space in the village. We have the backing of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Please help us to keep this beautiful churchyard in good order. Anne Palmer
YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION At our open meeting in June, members and guests watched as our visiting artist, Mr Roy Johanson, painted a lovely picture of a woodland scene and then raffled it in aid of his favourite charity, the Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, raising £50. The Raffle was won by Eileen Vicary. We then all enjoyed one of our popular buffet suppers, thanks to the generosity of our members. Thanks are due again to the members, as their contributions to our cake stall at Bramham Gala made possible a record result of £163. We would also like to thank the Gala Committee for giving us the opportunity to achieve this and for their assistance on the day. We would also like to pass on our congratulations to Keith Innocent and his team for producing another super gala. It really was a lovey day. There will not be a meeting in August. Jean Dale

Six months on and we are delighted to report that the Café is proving a big hit with customers. Many have commented on the friendly welcome they have received, the relaxed atmosphere, and the quality and variety of food and drink being served. On the menu are a lovely selection of teas, coffees and fruit juices, freshly prepared sandwiches, bacon butties and a delicious soup of the week, all sourced with seasonal ingredients from local suppliers wherever possible. For those with a sweet tooth, our homemade cakes are sure to please you and our recently introduced afternoon teas, at a very reasonable £10 for two people, are already really popular. 31 IF BRAMHAM IN BLOOM IS TO CONTINUE WE MUST HAVE MORE HELP This will be Bramham’s NINTH year of being involved in Bramham in Bloom, formed at the request of the Village under the Parish Plan. Over the years more and more work has had to be absorbed by the committee, as despite many requests to the Village via the magazine, we were unable to obtain necessary help. As far as Meryl and Ernest are concerned, from a health point of view, they cannot continue with the physical demands Bramham in Bloom is presently making on them. These are the areas where help is required, and if it is not forthcoming the future of Bramham in Bloom is uncertain. 1) Sorting the plants into beds after delivery 2) Additional mowing round the beds and strimming the edges 3) The War Memorial 4) The Hay Racks on what was the White Horse wall 5) The Beck Bed 6) The Lions Shrub Bed 7) The Bed inside the Medical Centre 8) The Broken Wall Bed at the top of Wetherby Road Put together, this is a lot of work, but individually does not take up too much time. Needless to say, Ernest & Meryl are very disappointed to admit that they are unable to carry on as they have done in the past, but I am sure we all agree that the large amount of work they do at present could not continue indefinitely. This work is far beyond the call of duty and the last two years have been very hard for them. The Committee is hopeful, that when the village knows the present situation, help will be forthcoming, because we are certain that the Residents are proud of what the village looks like now and would not want it to revert back to before the Parish Plan, for the sake of a few hours’ work from a few extra people. If help is forthcoming (which we are sure it will) Bramham in Bloom could continue as follows:1) Ernest is willing to continue as Chairman and deal with the day to day administration, and deal with weed spraying and power strimming as required. 2 ) Meryl is willing to continue as Treasurer & prepare the Annual Accounts. She & Gill will still plan the beds. Meryl will order the plants for the beds & the Hay Racks on the Bridge over the Beck. 3) Gill is willing to continue as Secretary with her computer skills for the required Yorkshire in Bloom Brochures & posters. She will also still be willing for her garden drive to be used for storing the plants until they are planted. Gill & Meryl will also still be willing to entertain the Yorkshire in Bloom Judges twice a year. If the village wants Bramham in Bloom to continue, people have to come forward to help with looking after the beds, as listed above. We look forward to receiving some support from the village. If you would like further information please ring Ernest on 841196 Any member of the Committee:- Martin Batt 842220 or Gill Young 843129

33 WETHERBY RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB Wetherby RUFC have recently moved into a brand new club house after £700,000 was raised to provide this vastly improved facility which includes 8 heated changing rooms all with their own showers and toilets as well as meeting rooms with all the latest IT, a state of the art kitchen and bar. Bramham played an important part for the Club whilst the building took place and the Committee would like to thank in particular Richard Smailes for organising an Auction of Promises and Keith Robinson for a Band Night both held in the Village Hall which raised substantial sums towards the project. In addition the Committee would like to thank Sam at the Swan for hosting our Committee Meetings. Wetherby Rugby Club have ambitious plans for the future and would welcome senior players of any ability to join us. Training is taking place on Tuesday and Thursday Nights from 7pm. We also have one of the largest and most successful Junior Sections in the County, the Under 11’s winning the County Cup Final this year. Tag rugby starts at under 7 with full contact rugby at an older age and there are teams at every age group to under 17’s. BRAMHAM BROWNIES Bramham Brownies have had another full packed term. We have not long been back from our weekend away at Thornthwaite Activity Centre where all the girls took part in lots of activities. They all had a go at the Climbing Wall and everyone enjoyed the whole weekend. Brownies have been to the camp fire at Thorpe Arch where they took part in singing with other Brownie and Guide packs. We have also joined in Sports Day where all the girls worked really hard. We came second this year so we had to hand the trophy back, but we'll try again next year. Bramham Brownies have also said a sad farewell to one of our very experienced leaders Denise Barton, but I'm sure it won't be the last we see of Denise. If anyone is interested in helping out at Brownies we would welcome the help, call on
07984672624 or drop in on a Tuesday evening at Bramham School at 6pm and see what we get up to, this also goes for anyone wishing to join Brownies. Any parents who already have their daughters name down, could also get in contact to check availability, as some numbers may have changed and this will also enable us to make our records more up to date. Remember Brownies is now finished until September, so if any information is needed please give me a call. Sam (Brown Owl)

35 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS October 26th – Bramham Beer Festival – The Beer festival is the biggest fundraiser for the Village Hall and relies on sponsorship from local business and individuals. Thank you to those who have already come forward to offer sponsorship for all sorts of things - the barrels, the glasses, the food, the entertainment, the printing or the whole event. There are different types of sponsorship available, at differing costs and benefits. Anyone interested should contact Becky on 07932 957806. And please come along to support the Beer Festival – doors will open at 12 noon. There will be entertainments throughout the day. Soft drinks and wine will also be available for the non beer drinkers, and there will be food. Renovation of Cosy Cottage The former caretaker’s cottage adjacent to the hall is undergoing renovation so that it can be let. The cottage has been completely gutted and when renovation is complete there will be a new kitchen and bathroom, a lounge and three bedrooms. Work has been progressing slowly, mainly because the committee members carrying out the renovation have full time jobs elsewhere and we do not have the funds to engage a building firm. Contractors will carry out a complete roof repair in August to make the cottage water tight. Room for more? The committee is always ready to welcome new committee members to share the responsibilities, or just to help out occasionally at functions. We especially welcome anyone with fresh ideas and enthusiasm and a willingness to “get stuck in”. Please contact Christine Suddaby or Stewart Gibson on the numbers shown below. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT.

What a great professional show! I enjoyed it more than the show I saw at the Leeds Grand. The photographs on the screen certainly stole the show. What a great idea, so cleverly depicting the time of year. Thank you Martin for the superb pictures. What a great story line, and so well portrayed. John really did look at death’s door, the make-up was just perfect, I felt quite upset to see him! All in all it was the best drama group show I have seen at Bramham. Even the programme and tickets were professional. So congratulations to Alison and her great team. GEY
BRAMHAM IN BLOOM MY APOLOGIES for the late arrival of the Yorkshire in Bloom Judges at the Square on the 8th. As the Spring judging was cancelled we had to look at the School and the Church on the same day instead of splitting them. This had slipped my mind when calculating the arrival in the Square, I am getting on a bit you know !!! Many thanks to all who turned up particularly to those who stayed to meet the judges, they do appreciate it. Once again my apologies. Ernest
NEWS FROM THE GUIDES The two Guide units (1st Boston Spa & 1st Clifford) had a rounder's match on the 11th July, and the 1st Clifford Guides won. The Guides have now broken up for the summer and will be back in September, when I will let you have more news of what the Guides are doing. Sarah Clayton
37 NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH After many years service PC David Muscroft retired from West Yorkshire Police force at the end of December 2012. Since then residents will not have received the regular usual weekly NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH message. Due to the re-organisation within West Yorkshire Police this post will not be refilled. West Yorkshire Police, North East Division are now taking the opportunity to revamp the old system and to bring it into line with the much changed NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Organisation. Unfortunately this is taking a lot longer than anticipated. We hope to have a new system in place within a few months. Part of the updating entails extra work for our already very busy PC’s and PCSO’s as they are finding time to contact everyone on the lists to ensure that our records are correct. Many residents have moved and often the new occupiers do not wish to be involved. Some now have new telephone numbers and some are requesting messages to be sent via email. All these changes do take up a lot of time. Should you require up to date crime information the West Yorkshire Police Web Page is always available www.westyorkshirepolice.uk click on ‘My Area’ and then type in a local Post Code for the up to date information or alternatively you may sign on to www.ourwatch.org.uk and again type in your local Post Code for local information. Should any residents, groups or Parish /Town Councils wish me to give a talk about the changes within NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH please contact me on the details below.

WETHERBY & DISTRICT CRIME PREVENTION PANEL Summer Season has arrived. So many residents are carelessly leaving windows and doors open without security locks on them. Lots of garden furniture left out without being secured or post coded. Numerous garden toys left around and garage doors and side gates left insecure. All these opportunities are most welcome by the unscrupulous opportunistic thief. Why give them the opportunity to make a profit at your expense. Unfortunately we no longer live in a crime free world. We now have many more possessions than ever before. Please look around and consider your home security. Do not place everything at risk due to lack of taking a few simply security measures. NEVER leave keys in a vehicle when it is unattended, especially when you return home from shopping and you are unloading.

38 BRAMHAM GALA The seventh Bramham Gala was held on Saturday 29th June and the sun shone, the crowds turned out and the beer flowed. The day started off with an official opening by local MP Alec Shelbrooke and was followed by the first of two performances by the Supreme Starlet Majorettes with a full repertoire of displays from a wide range of all age groups of boys and girls. The highlight of the show were the Savage Skills Cycle stunt team who did three performances each one drawing sharp intakes of breath from the crowd. The team of bmx and mountain bike riders showed their skills by balancing on one wheel, leaping up poles and onto the roof of their van, followed by somersaults and trick jumps from ramps. There were a wide range of stalls, stands and food stalls to satisfy everyone. The Guides did a superb barbeque with a creperie, fish and chips and ice cream. The beer tent did a roaring trade with real ale, pimms and lager selling well. Stalls from Bramham in Bloom, Bramham Church, Yorkshire Countrywomans Association and the Friends of Bramham School sold plants, teas, coffees and cakes between them. Other local groups raised money in a variety of ways for their causes and did very well indeed. The Gala Gig took place on July 6th at the Village Hall. The band Roundel performed a superb set of classic covers and rocked the Hall. They were supported by Bramham’s own Nyk Hall. Keith Innocent, Chair of Bramham Gala would like to thank all the Gala Team, helpers and supporters who helped make the Gala the success it is today. We are always looking for more people to join our team or if you don’t want to be part of the organising team them please let us know if you are willing to volunteer to help on the day or help set up. Also we have been listening to comments made to us by villagers and we are taking some ideas on board to improve the Gala but we do need help to turn these ideas into action. Look out for details of next years Gala.

Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.
Thought for the Month
THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper and groceries are heavier? Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long our street had become! You know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, mouthing the same silent message. What do they think I am, a lip reader. I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn't even recognize me. I got to thinking about the poor dear this morning, while combing my hair, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection. Well REALLY NOW even mirrors are not made the way they used to be! Another thing, everyone drives so fast these days! You're risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the motorway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror. Clothing manufacturers are less civilized these days. Why else would they suddenly start labelling a size 10 or 12 dress as 18 or 20? Do they think no one notices? The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank. Do they think I actually 'believe' the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they're fooling? I'd like to call up someone in authority to report what's going on, but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too, they've printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in it. All I can do is pass along this warning, PLEASE see that everyone you know reads it so we can get this conspiracy stopped!
