Clergy Letter from The Rev. Trish Anslow I must make an apology to all our readers! I offered you all a very comfortable set of blinkers in my last letter. I was totally swept away with the beauty of our corner of the world and asked you to spend time listening and looking at God’s glorious creation and making time to give thanks for it. We have Villages and Towns in Bloom, Yorkshire Bike rides, Galas by the dozen, even Beer Festivals if that is your thing. To cap it all, as I write this in the first weekend in July, some of us were witness to the awesome and magnificent service of Ordination to the Diaconate in York Minster. Twenty-one people from our diocese were ordained by the Archbishop of York to become Deacons in our churches and communities. It was a service filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. Of course we are still in this beautiful place and God has provided us with wonders and delights to see, but he also expects us to open our eyes to reality. The world is a much bigger place than Yorkshire! We are able to see and feel all the superlatives here and in many places around the world; the best, the highest, widest, deepest and most magnificent; but our radios, televisions and newspapers will give us some of the worst superlatives that we can imagine. We are still reeling from the worst of acts in Tunisia that caused devastation to so many families; we share some of the acute pain from the politics that inflict austerity to the ordinary people in Greece and our hearts go out to those who
are caught up in the most severe wars that blight our world. Christians in many places are persecuted and even put to death for the bravest of acts –admitting their faith to their enemies. Nature seems to be doing its best to bring us the highest temperatures for a long time, the fiercest electrical storms, the most severe gales, the worst measurable earthquakes and the near extinction of many species of animal. Apart from feeling it might be the signal for the end times what can we feel about all these extremes? If you listen to the communicators on the media you will still hear the scientists warning of the dire consequences of global warming. They wish to remind us all that we are the cause of this phenomenon. At this point it is my intention to remind us all that we are the temporary stewards of this world. We can learn, and teach others, to look after this planet with greater care and hopefully be able to pass it on to future generations in a cleaner state than we inherited it. All of this is no use at all if wars and terrorism and persecution are simply going to continue in this cleaner world. I don’t want you to feel it is hopeless to face such a massive block to this cleaner world. We have been taught that all big journeys start from a first step. Please join me on the journey. I will be at the starting line each day, ready to put my best foot forward. My steps are small but very purposeful. See you there.
Rev Trish

DIACONAL ORDINATIONS Our congratulations and best wishes go to Glenda Webb and Jane Brown who were ordained to the Diaconate by Archbishop Sentamu on Sunday, 5th July at 10.00am in York Minster. In the Minster I sat next to a young priest who was attending the ordination of his own mother ! It was lovely to see Steve Aston, the musical director and organist of St. Mary’s, for whom the Minster is his parish, acting as a steward. Just before the ordination the Archbishop addressed the congregation: “Brothers and sisters, you have heard how great is the charge that these Ordinands are ready to undertake, and you have heard their declarations. Is it now your will that they should be ordained?” With a huge roar the congregation replied “It is” and the ordination started. The 2015 Ordination of Deacons was a magnificent occasion, though a very long ceremony lasting two hours and twenty minutes due to there being twenty one of them. The preacher was The Rev. Peter Beck, the former Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, New Zealand (the cathedral which was destroyed by an earthquake) who had led the Deacons in their retreat at Wydale Hall, the Diocesan Retreat and Conference Centre. He gave a moving address on the theme of “Life is stronger than death and love is stronger than hate” beginning and ending with Maori greetings. The worship, choir, music, and organ were amazing. The Church of England excels at producing liturgy for these great occasions and it was truly a feast of sound and colour. Glenda has lived and worked here for twenty seven years and has made a huge contribution to the parishes of Bramham Rev.Andy Grant, Richard Battersby, Canon Bristow, Glenda Webb, Benefice, especially at Peter Watson, Tricia Anslow, Sheila Morton and Ken Gabbadon. St. Mary’s where she served in several different capacities and as our former Benefice Administrator. She is serving her title at Brayton with The Rev. Pete Watson and it was lovely to meet his delightful Family again. Glenda is the seventh person from our parishes to have offered herself for priestly service since I arrived here. We wish Glenda great joy as she moves to a new ministerial scene, but she will continue to have her home base here. Continued on page 7

Jane, with her husband Paul, moved into Thorp Arch vicarage in the middle of June. Jane comes with a strong background of leadership and management in public health services. Jane and Paul’s daughter is Beth who lives away. Jane will be the sixth and last curate to be trained during my time here. A very big and very warm welcome to Jane and Paul at this time of great change for both of them.. Trish Anslow and I travelled together to the Minster along with Sheila Harper from St. Mary’s and Gerald Payling from Boston Spa Methodist Church. At the end of the ceremony we joined the huge congregation milling outside the West Door as it acclaimed the new Deacons. Jane and her husband Peter
Immediately afterwards we attended Jane’s reception in her home parish church at Clifton. Jane shared her reception with another newly ordained deacon and it was great to be part of her welcome there. When we returned to Boston Spa, to our surprise Glenda and her immediate family had not yet arrived back. Glenda was supported by Family members from Suffolk and Scotland, friends from across the diocese and by several clergy including, three former curates, Sheila and Alan Morton, Peter Watson and his Family, Andy Grant and by Glenda’s new curate colleague in Brayton, Richard Battersby. Over sixty parishioners and friends attended the reception, which included lots of support from Bramham, Thorp arch and Walton. A big thank you to Doreen Lister, Sue Waring, Gay Childe, Audrey Fothergill, Fiona Robinson, Jennifer Wormald and all the others who helped with the preparations from St. Peter’s Congregation, Walton. They put on a superb spread, so much so that one visitor remarked it was the best church feast she had attended for twenty years ! As the reception drew to a close parishioners were arriving for the All Age Worship Service at 4.00pm, some of whom had not seen Glenda for a long time due to her being away at college most weekends and expressed their delight at seeing her for the first time in a clerical collar ! Following years of dedicated preparation this is a very special time for Jane and Glenda as they settle into their new ministries and I ask all of you to give thanks for their calling and to continue to pray for them and their families. Canon Peter

Stepping Stones The last Stepping Stones of the term was spent outside, playing in the beautiful sunshine, with the children relaxing and enjoying a picnic under the trees. They also decorated some buns with icing and springles and did a marvellous job, but it was rather short lived as they were eaten quickly after! Because of the lovely weather the children were able to enjoy some games outside, and had a great game of hide and seek around the trees. It was a really nice end to a great term of Stepping Stones. Thank you to everyone who helps at the sessions, and also to all the children who attend; its lovely to see the children working together and getting along so nicely, and they always produce such lovely things at each session! At the Family Service on the following Sunday, we met our new Curate Jane Brown, who will assist Canon Peter and will be with us for the next few years. She will be coming along to meet the children at one of our sessions in the Autumn Term. There won’t be any Stepping Stones sessions over the holidays, and the Family Service at All Saints in August will be a ‘Group Benefice Service’ on the 9th August at 10am. The next Stepping Stones Session is on Friday 11th September at 5.30pm , in All Saints Church, with the Family Service on 13th September at 10am. The Stepping Stones children attend Bramham, Boston Spa (St Mary’s and Primrose Lane) and Thorp Arch schools. More children are attending, and these sessions are becoming increasingly popular. The theme for Stepping Stones is always linked to the Family Service the following Sunday – these services are very relaxed and child friendly. Any child is welcome to attend regardless of whether they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment.

BRAMHAM CALENDAR FOR 2016 We are sure you have some great photographs of our lovely village and parish and we welcome as many entries as possible for next year’s Calendar. We shall be having the selection process on the 12th September when the 13 photographs will be chosen. There will be prizes for the first three. To fit the calendar lay out, the photographs must be in landscape mode, and ideally the subjects should be in or around Bramham village. Your photographs can be left at the Village Shop or given to Anne Palmer, Gill Young or the Rev. Stanley Menzies. We had a great response for this year’s calendar with superb photography and the Calendar goes to families and friends beyond Bramham. This is an important fund raiser for the Church and reminds us of our lovely habitation. We look forward to your entries.
Stanley

For an elderly person to admit they need help would mean they can't take care of themselves anymore, and no one wants to lose their independence. Usually, the burden falls on family members to recognise the signs that an ageing parent might need some extra help with daily living tasks, but this doesn't necessarily mean that your loved one has to move into a care home. They may just need some extra help in their home. Here are some questions to ask to determine if your elderly parents may need some extra care? Are your parents able to take care of themselves? Pay attention to your parents' appearance. Failure to keep up with daily routines such as bathing, tooth brushing, and good hygiene is a sign that they may be experiencing feelings of depression or have a physical ailment. Are your parents able to take care of their home? Are the lights working or is the laundry piling up? Is the yard overgrown? Any changes in the way your parents do things around the house could provide clues to their health. Are your parents safe on the road? Driving can be challenging for older adults. If your parents become confused while driving or you're concerned about their ability to drive safely, it might be time to stop driving. Have your parents lost weight? Losing weight without trying could be a sign that something's wrong. Weight loss could be related to many factors, including difficulty cooking, loss of taste or smell or perhaps it is the signal of an underlying condition such as malnutrition, dementia, or depression. Are your parents still social? It’s important to talk to your parents about their activities. Are they connecting with friends? Have they maintained interest in hobbies and other daily activities? Are they involved in organisations or clubs? If a parent gives up on being with others, it could be a sign of a problem. Even if you don’t live near-by to your parents but are concerned about their health and wellbeing, there are many things you can do to ensure your parents are getting the support they need. Share your concerns with them and address any issues that you feel may become bigger if they aren’t dealt with early on. Encourage regular medical check-ups, consider home care services, and seek help from local agencies. For further help and advice please contact Margaret Brennan, owner of local Wetherby-based at home care company Home Instead Senior Care. Email: margaret.brennan@homeinstead.co.uk or call 01937 220510.

STROLL IN THE PARK AND HOG ROAST The Stroll in the Park and Hog Roast was held on the 4th July. The early morning rain was a little dispiriting, but the weather improved by late morning and encouraged a good attendance. It seemed that more people took advantage of the sun and walked round the park and the house gardens and visited the setting of the latest series of the Syndicate! We hope that those who attended enjoyed themselves and would like to thank them for supporting All Saints’ We would like to take this opportunity to thank Nick and Rachel Lane Fox for allowing us to hold the event and for donating the raffle prize of tickets for The Bramham Three Day Event which was won by Ed Moss. Also our thanks go to the small band of stalwarts who helped run the event, without them it would be impossible to cope with the organisation and staffing on the day. It was great to be entertained by the Tadcaster Grammar Big Band who were making their debut at the event and the return of George Syrett and his partner Sue on the accordions. We are pleased to report that we have put over £1,000 into the church funds. Chips and Mollie Browning

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk
July 2015 Update
....communica ng with residents To All Bramham Residents – an update from the June meeting. New Parish Councillors: The Parish Council is very pleased to welcome 3 new councillors co-opted onto the Council. These are Deborah Atkinson, Naomi Elvin, and Chris Lewis. All are keen to contribute to our community in Bramham and to play a full role on the Parish Council. Gala: Thank you to Keith Innocent, the Community Action Group, and all groups who contributed for another fantastic gala despite the showers! Sawmills development: The developer of the Sawmills housing on the wood yard has applied to Leeds City Council (LCC) to amend the planning approval so as to permit them to delay final completion of the scheme (road works, landscaping and drainage to the later dwellings in the scheme) until the houses affected have been sold. The Parish Council is concerned that this could leave the village with an ongoing, incomplete building site and will be making representations to LCC. Solar Farm proposal: A planning application has now been lodged for a Solar Farm on Headley Land. The Parish Council will be commenting. Any residents wishing to comment can do so on the Leeds City Council website. The planning application reference is 15/02188/FU. Playing field gym equipment: A tender has been issued to 4 companies. Next Meeting: The next meeting will be on Wednesday 2 September, 7.30pm in the Senior Citizen’s Centre. Residents are welcome to attend. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. A SUMMER OF EVENTS WITH BRAMHAM COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP This summer has already sizzled with events organised by the Community Action Group. On the 17th May we had the Open Gardens event throughout the village which started off at the Plant Sale held at the pavilion. This year we joined forces with the Scarecrow Trail and the theme of “Gardens & Gardeners” meant that a wonderful assortment of “Bill & Bens” Charlie Dimmocks and Mr McGregors were to found across the village. A huge thanks to all those gardeners who opened up their gardens to the public and all the people who made the fantastic scarecrows. We had two film shows. The first film day saw a showing of Frozen which proved such a massive hit with the kids that it was standing room only. We even had a guest performance from Olaf the snowman. In the evening we all danced and sang along to Grease. The performances of The Lego Movie and Mamma Mia weren’t so popular but the few that were there enjoyed the shows. The biggest event so far has been the Gala. Held on Saturday 20th June the day went very well. The weather wasn’t brilliant but the sun shone and it was warm enough to bring the crowds out. The main attraction in the arena were the Xtreme Stunt Team, a duo of performers on a bike and motorbike who performed some pretty amazing stunts.
The majorettes and the Danceology groups performed in the arena to huge applause. The wide range of stands and stalls ringed the arena with an array of tombolas, raffles as well as traditional games such as hook a duck, the coconut shy and candy floss. The food was provided by the NSPCC with their barbecue along with the Village Chippy who came to serve up fish and chips. The bar served cold drinks all day and in the beer tent live music from Nyk Hall who performed his last ever gig of his farewell tour. His guitar has now been put away! Continued on page 35

Thanks to everyone who came. As we provide the Gala for free we rely on grants and donations to fund the day. So a special thanks to Bramham Parish Council, Wetherby Ward Councillors and the Outer North East Committee and Bramham Park for their financial help. Also thanks to the advertisers who supported us by having adverts in our fantastic programme.
Bramham in Bloom Plants
A final thanks to the Gala Team for all their hard work in putting this great event together. Looking forward to 2016. If you would like to help out the Gala you can become a “Friend of Bramham Gala” by donating £10. You can pay by cheque payable to Bramham Community Action Group and send it to me at 21 Lyndon Road, Bramham LS23 6RH. Help us to put on these events and support the village. Watch out for more details of upcoming events which we will put in this magazine.

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM JUDGING DAY Once again the sun shone brightly on the judges for the Summer Judging Day on Friday 10th July. Many residents arrived in the Square to meet and greet the judges, Ernest Nichols the Chair of Bramham in Bloom and fellow committee members. Particular points of interest to the judges during the tour as well as the many floral displays were the Churchyard, Senior Citizens Centre and garden, Wildlife Conservation Area, Bowcliffe Hall Business Centre & Event Venue, Jubilee Gardens, Folly Allotments and Bramham Primary School which is a great supporter of Bramham in Bloom.
Meeting the Judges
At the school a group of children guided the judges around their vegetable and wildflower gardens and demonstrated their keen knowledge and maturity when discussing the development of their new pond area.
Judges at the school
Judge at work!
A member of staff encourages the children of the Gardening Club to plant, tend and grow many different fruits and vegetables, which they are then able to harvest and eat at lunchtime ……… the strawberries are a particular favourite! Their display board in school showed a varied interest in the activities that take place.
The tour concluded in Bramham Square where the Red Lion public house always provides an amazing display of window/wall boxes and hanging baskets. Containers, hanging baskets, planted troughs and hayracks around the Square showed the great variety of displays within the village. Here, enthusiastic gardeners and friends of Bramham were waiting to talk very eagerly about their pride in the village community. Huge thanks are due to them and also the large number of sponsors who enable the flowerbeds and gardens to flourish and become sustainable throughout the seasons. All manage to plant up twice each year, weed, dead-head and water whenever necessary. Thank you to everyone involved………fingers crossed
for another Gold Award in 2015!
