3 Clergy Letter from Rev’d Peter Bristow A FEAST FOR ALL TIME The rush and bustle of the Christmas celebrations are upon us. The Christmas cycle only began to develop in the 5th century AD. Easter was THE Feast of the church, a reminder that any man can be born, but to conquer death belongs only to the man who is also God. It is Easter which makes the Christmas Feast so significant. For without Easter our Christmas celebration merely echoes the ancient mid-winter festival, the ‘knees up’ to keep out the cold and ‘banging of drums’ to make the sun rise again. As the days began to lengthen the early Christians saw the link that can be made between Christ’s arrival and the idea of him as the ‘new sun’, the light who shines in the midst of the darkness of this world. The darkness of our own times, the serious consequences of climate change, the Ebola virus in West Africa, the violence and wars across the Middle East and north Africa and this year our recalling the horrors of the First World War, can depress and blunt our understanding and joy in the Gospel – the Good News. Our world is rarely without darkness but the Christmas story reminds us that whatever the darkness in the lives of others and in our own lives, the victory over this darkness is already present, like the seed growing secretly. A few weeks ago I listened in awe to the story of a brave Afghan mother and her daughter who are refugees living in Leeds.
Our lives are so blessed in comparison with theirs. They fled an appalling situation created by the violence of the Taliban and came here in fear of their lives in the back of a closed lorry all the way from Afghanistan. We hear so much negative comment about the economic costs of refugees and immigrants, but little of their noble spirits and enriching worth as human beings. Let us not close our ears or our wallets to their often tragic stories and let us not forget that the Christmas story clearly tells us that the infant Jesus himself was a refugee who fled the wrath of a psychotic king. We often wish to put aside the awful news of our times, particularly at Christmas. A quick fix of ‘Yuletide’ cheer, a day’s eating and merrymaking, yet the following day is the feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr. The cold and dark realities of the world’s sore points still remain. But, for those with the eyes of faith, the image of mother and child tells us that the arrival on the scene of a new born babe, is no ordinary son of Adam. This is the creator God, coming as Redeemer, Saviour (Christ), into a wounded world to keep us company in the worst of human failings that can befall us. This child later becomes our crucified companion who bears our soreness and the world’s pain. I wish you and your loved ones a thoughtful, peaceful and joy filled celebration. The Rev. Peter E. Bristow, Vicar.

Stepping Stones The children who attended Stepping Stones in November mainly spent their time scrunching up tissue paper into little balls and gluing them to paper cut outs..... "whatever for" I hear you ask?! Well, the children all made beautiful giant Remembrance poppies, which looked amazing! After some refreshments (and some slight confusion where one of the children was asked to take orders from the adults for tea - and came back saying 9 people wanted to come for dinner!) Reverend Andy introduced the children to 'Kim's' game; they all had great fun remembering a number of Church and Christian objects (such as a wooden cross, tiny bible, candle, communion wafer, a poppy) which were on a tray for the children to memorise. When they turned their backs an object was taken from the tray, they then had to try to guess what had been removed. This was repeated a number of times and was a fun way to help them with our theme of remembrance, and the importance of remembering. The children showed their handy work off at the Remembrance Service the following Sunday, by parading around the church with their poppies. Two of the children who attend Stepping Stones; Alyssa and Charles read (together with Lyndsey Appleton granddaughter of Ronald Appleton who is on Bramham’s War Memorial) out the names of those lost in the both World Wars, it was very moving and we are very proud of them for helping with this important task. Any child is welcome to attend Stepping Stones regardless of wether they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 12th December at All Saints Church, 5.30pm – come in your PJ's and onsies ready for a candle lit Christmas bedtime story read by Reverend Andy, together with the children’s Christmas Party. Please advise Jennie Saynor (prior to Decembers Stepping Stones) if your child would like to attend (with a responsible adult) so we can ensure there are plenty of things to eat for the children (and Mums and Dads). In closing, this is Reverend Andy’s last Stepping Stones before he leaves for his new Parish. We at Stepping Stones would like to congratulate him on his appointment, and thank him for all his help and enthusiasm, we’ll all really miss you Andy; A BIG THANK YOU from all at Stepping Stones. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday (14th December) at 10am. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk.

7 THE REV’D ANDY GRANT “It is a great pleasure to announce that The Rev. Andy Grant has been appointed Vicar of the Benefice of Marton-in-Cleveland. Andy’s new parish is in the Cleveland Archdeaconry, close to Middlesborough. His last service with the Parish of All Saints, Thorp Arch will be on 30th November and with the Parish of Lower Wharfe on 14th December at All Saints, Bramham. Andy will be collated at St. Cuthbert’s on Saturday 17th January 2015. Our congratulations to Andy and we wish him, Alison and the Family every blessing as they prepare for this move. “ Fr. Peter.
THE REV’D ANDY GRANT The Rev. Andy Grant officially leaves the Benefice in the middle of this month. Fr. Andy has made a great contribution to our churches, particularly with his leadership of our youth scene, especially Holy Mackerels and the annual Holiday Club. When he first arrived Andy said that he did not think young people were his particular forte, but I explained that given his youthfulness (relatively speaking, of course !) this work had to be part of his responsibilities. He has risen to the task magnificently and has perhaps discovered strengths and gifts he didn’t know he had. He has led baptisms, weddings and funerals with confidence and pastoral sensitivity and in the last few months has enjoyed looking after All Saints, Bramham. St. Cuthbert’s in Cleveland-in-Marton are about to receive a well rounded priest who brings a real passion for preaching and teaching the Gospel of Christ. We give thanks for what we have received through Fr.Andy and pray for God’s blessing on him and Alison, Heather and Holly as they prepare to move. Fr. Andy’s last official services are at All Saints, Thorp Arch, on 30th November at 9.30am and in the Parish of Lower Wharfe (St. Peter’s, Walton; St. Mary’s Boston Spa and All Saints, Bramham) on 14th December at All Saints, Bramham, at 10.00am. This latter service is usually Walton’s Nativity Service with donkey and I would like to thank St. Peter’s for allowing me to transfer their service to a larger venue. But I do particularly want to seriously ask and encourage Walton families to attend and the service will continue to be organised by Walton. In return All Saints, Bramham will lead the Christingle at Walton on 1st February 2015 at 4.00pm and likewise I ask Bramham families to make an effort to attend the Christingle at Walton. While we have our familiar and favourite place of worship, parishioners of Lower Wharfe need to feel welcome and make themselves at home in all three churches of the parish. The Rev. Peter E. Bristow, Vicar

9 BRAMHAM IN BLOOM AGM 2014 The AGM was held on the 21st October. Last years minutes were accepted as read. The accounts were also accepted without comment. There were no nominations for Officers and the current committee was re elected.
REVIEW OF THE YEAR TO THE 30TH SEPT 2014 Yorkshire in Bloom - Gold Rose Award A superb result for all the residents of Bramham. The judges made special mention of the Primary School, the Church grounds and flower troughs, new summer hanging baskets on Front Street, the Senior Citizens Centre, the Red Lion flower displays, the Jubilee Gardens and Bowcliffe Corner. All the areas of horticultural excellence contributed to the Gold Award. Thank you to all the gardeners for a very successful result. In addition thanks go to Gerry Taylor and team, as litter is now a thing of the past. Sponsors Many sponsors continue to support Bramham in Bloom, but we are always looking for more, Nick Hall, APC Clothing has provided Hi-Viz jackets for the gardeners and for children at the school as an extra sponsorship commitment, Many thanks to all. The Village Stores B in B box collects around ÂŁ2.50 each week, which finances the Beck Flower Bed. The new baskets on Front Street have been sponsored by the residents. The Gala Leeds City Council provided plants free of charge for our stall and this resulted in a profit of ÂŁ200. Gardening equipment and furniture were donated which added to our funds .. Please keep in mind for next year. Developments The judges made favorable comments regarding the character of the village which has always been the ethos of the Bramham in Bloom Committee. We have always been keen to embrace this commitment. However, we also need to move forward to improve and enhance, not only our village floral displays, but add extra features. A new bench is being situated at the top of Wetherby Road and we have however replaced a small trough at the church with a bigger one. We have established a valuable relationship with the local press and our coverage has been excellent. This will hopefully continue into 2015 Wildlife Area Martin Batt is leaving for a while on business and Frank Wood the current gardener at the SSC has agreed to take over. Many thanks to Frank and his team. Unfortunately we have not yet been authorised to use the bridge for access, but it is under review by the Parish Council. Additional Help This year we have had offers of extra help and have welcomed a new committee member, namely Lynne Marshall which has been a great help to Meryl and Ernest. Many thanks. Two new volunteers, Julie Smith and Dave Hugh have joined our casual team. Continued on page 11

Bulb Planting Lynne and Paul Marshall have taken an interest in this. Crystal Macleod has planted daffodil bulbs in areas around the top of Wetherby Road. A bed by the broken wall has been replaced with bulbs rather than plants. The Future This report contains the focus points for last year. Everything will continue to improve in the future and we will always welcome casual volunteers to help spread the load. A new proposal has been put forward for a new bed on Lyndon Road. (Since the AGM a gardener and sponsor have been found). Please contact Lynne Marshall 844767 if you would like to become involved in the continued care of our village. All different offers of help can be incorporated into our scheme of work. The Committee, Gardeners and Sponsors will continue to support the village and look forward to a prosperous and ‘blooming good’ New Year.

BRAMHAM BROWNIES Bramham Brownies needs your help…. Sam has been involved with and led Bramham Brownies for 7 years and Jenny is about to reach her 5 year anniversary of assisting with Bramham Brownies. Due to Sam’s working commitments and the fact that Jenny’s youngest daughter is about to leave Bramham Brownies means that they will both be leaving at the end of the school year (July 2015). They have both had a fantastic time with many fond memories and so it is with heavy hearts that they are stepping down. All of the events and activities at Bramham Brownies would not have been possible without the help and support of the wonderful parents throughout the years. There is currently a fantastic team of parent helpers and it is therefore hoped that someone will step into the gap. All the current parents have been contacted and the reason for this notice is to see if there is anyone else in the village who would also like to step into the gap. Both Sam and Jenny have committed to be available for help and advice and there is a whole Girl Guiding network locally, regionally and nationally that is available too. If you are interested and want to know more, please contact Sam on 07984672624. The sooner a new team comes forward the smoother the transition will be for the Brownies after July 2015. Many thanks Jenny Haigh Snowy Owl 1st Bramham Brownies

November 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents
To all Bramham residents: Update from November Meeting Pavilion Completion: The final works to complete our village pavilion are going well and providing the weather continues to be kind to us we expect completion before Christmas. The external works really do set the building off and it is great to see the end in sight. We will be thinking about opening celebrations and fund raising events. Any ideas are very welcome. Playground: We will soon be meeting with the providers to finalise arrangements for the new playground. A resident advised us at the November meeting of a completely untrue rumour in the village. The rumour is apparently that we are moving the playground to another location so that it is no longer near our clerk’s house. This is absolutely NOT the case. The new playground will be on the same site as the current one, and the suggestion that it would be moved because it is near the clerk’s house is an unpleasant and unwarranted one. On the contrary our clerk has put many hours, over and above those she is paid for, into facilitating the new playground and has never attempted in any way to influence the Council to move it. We do ask that you don’t listen to rumours – if you want to know what is happening please read these updates, check the website and our minutes, or ask any member of the council. We are happy to talk to you and explain about any aspect of council business. Superfast Broadband: We are pleased to advise that Leeds City Council has advised that this work is underway and we are awaiting a completion date. Thank you to everyone who registered to move us up the priority list. Battle of Bramham Moor commemoration: The framed information on Spen Common Lane has sadly been stolen. The police have been advised and we are looking into replacing it. Christmas! Thank you to Cllr Keith Innocent for organising our Christmas Tree and new lights (another village project that we were delighted to fund from the option agreement monies), a lovely Christmas addition to the village that will be enjoyed by all. As in recent years, we will hold the December meeting in the supper room so that there is room for residents to come along and enjoy a mince pie and tea or coffee. It will be on Wednesday 10th December. Continued on page 15

One of Britain’s greatest painters, William Hogarth was a sharp social satirist, a lobbyist for the rights of artists and founder of a new British School of art. Altogether a fascinating figure and every bit as worthy of a film as J MW Turner! Talks are free to Society members but non-members are also welcome: entrance is £5.00 on the door. 19 BRAMHAM CHURCH BUILT BEFORE BECKETT’S MURDER IN CANTERBURY On Sunday 2nd November a record of the church furnishings was presented to All Saints’ Church, Bramham. This is a large volume containing complete details of the entire contents of the church with the history, dates, maker and donor and very likely a photograph. This was done over two years by a group of volunteers from the Leeds branch of the Decorative and Fine Arts Society, which funded the project. In the whole country 2000 churches have been recorded and copies are kept at the Borthwick Institute at York University, and sent to the V&A, English Heritage and the Church Buildings Council in Westminster. The records are held in the National Archives for future use by historians, researchers, insurers and the police, who use the records to identify any stolen goods. Endorsement of the valuable work of recorders was read from Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, the V&A and English Heritage. Bramham church has a long history and this was emphasised by Jane Hedley, group leader, in her address to the congregation, including the fact that parts of the church were built in 1150 which was 20 years before the murder of Thomas Beckett. Among other historical notes she added that Cromwell trained his Ironsides on Bramham Moor before the battle of Marston Moor. The record was presented to the churchwarden Mr Chips Browning. Photograph shows the Recorders with the Church warden. Anne Palmer

25 CRIME PREVENTION PANEL NEWSLETTER The darker nights are with us again. Have you checked that your security lights are working correctly and that when they switch on they are pointing in the correct direction? They do not need to light up your neighbour’s area also. This may be deemed to be a nuisance so check them carefully. When putting your garden items into storage for the winter did you Post Code them all? Have you secured your ladders to the floor or wall with a good padlock? Do you carry out the school run? Before leaving your home you should always make sure ALL your doors and windows are secure? That includes shed / garage doors and be sure your side gates are bolted so that no one can enter whilst you are out. Lamps with timer switches used in both upstairs and down stairs rooms should also be used. Especially, if you leave home early in the morning, and return, after dark. Vehicles are safer stored in a garage rather than a drive but in all cases always remove loose items and when in the home place the keys away out of sight. Never leave keys in door locks. Again, remove them and place them out of sight It literally only takes seconds for the ‘Opportunist Burglar’ to enter your property. If you have uPVC doors do you have the latest lock barrels installed? They should be to TS 007 3* Standard. Recognisable with the orange and black key tab. Wooden doors should use minimum 5 lever mortice standard. 27 NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH IN BRAMHAM OLD COACH HOUSE, VICARAGE LANE, BRAMHAM, WETHERBY LS23 6QG TEL: 01937 842850 E MAIL anne@palmeryorkshire.com We were invited to the Neighbourhood Watch Meeting on 17th September and only a few residents turned up. The purpose of the meeting was to inaugurate a NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Scheme in the village. I agreed to be a co-ordinator for the area of Vicarage Lane (including the part of Vicarage Lane which is the extension to Back Lane), and Prospect Bank and Windmill Road. However this is not ideal as I cannot clearly see Prospect Bank from my home and it would be better to find a resident living on Prospect Bank to volunteer to Watch this particular area. What is involved: We are asked to be watchful of any illegal or anti-social behaviour in the area, and report them to the Co-ordinator and to the Police. In an emergency ring 999 or 101 for non emergency reporting. If you prefer not to make contact directly with the Police then ask your Co-ordinator to do this for you. To form a Group - We are asked to contact residents and get their email addresses as this is the quickest, cheapest and most efficient method of communication, and matters of importance can be passed on to the Police or other Residents swiftly. This is a two way contact and as co-ordinators we will report concerns to the Police on a regular basis and in turn the Police can inform us of illegal activities in our area at the first opportunity. If you do not have email please can you make sure we have your telephone number so that we can contact you in the event of an urgent message. There is unlikely to be too much information coming your way, as fortunately we are living in a relatively crime free area. YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER WILL NOT BE PASSED ON TO THE POLICE OR ANY OTHER PERSON without your agreement. The “bcc” feature will be used for sending a group email. Window stickers are available - I am informed that they do deter criminals, also we can have stickers on the lamp posts in the lane. If you would like a sticker please let me know. Once the scheme is set up it might be useful to contact your Insurance Company and let them know there is a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in operation on your road and some companies will offer a reduction in their rates. If you have any questions do get in touch with me. If you wish to be part of the Group in the area of Vicarage Lane, Prospect Bank or Windmill Road, please get in touch with me. A volunteer from Prospect Bank would be very useful. If you can reply to me as soon as possible this will be helpful. An email or a message on my answering machine as I may be out . Many thanks Anne Palmer

29 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Remembrance Sunday was a real village occasion with a packed church. Groups from the local Brownies, Scouts, Beavers and Cubs attended the Services, with their respective Standards, ensuring that all age groups within the village were represented. It was lovely to see so many generations present for this significant national occasion. The lesson was read by Councillor Valerie Whitbread, Chairman of the Parish Council. Revd. Andy Grant and Revd Stanley Menzies conducted a short service at the war memorial, when the two minute silence was observed. The Reveille was played by Simon Noble. Wreaths were laid by: Councillor Valerie Whitbread for the Parish Council, Julia Hammond for Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association, Chips Browning for All Saints’ Church, Lyn Tritschler for The Monday Club, Iris Smith for Bramham in Bloom , Sam Fenwick Scott for Bramham Brownies. Stepping Stones laid a wreath at the Church Altar with poppies the children had made themselves. On Armistice Day, the 11th day of the 11th month at 11.00 am, Bramham Primary School attended a short service at the War Memorial. A wreath was laid from the school and the names on the memorial were read. They were joined by a large group of residents.

33 WE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO
WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR and to say that All Saints Church is there for you all to enjoy as a place of peace and reflection. We have enjoyed another busy year under the guidance of the Reverend Andy Grant as our own Curate in charge and will be very sorry to see him go in December when he moves on to his own Parish. We wish him, Alison, Heather and Holly all the best “up North”. He has, most particularly, been an amazing leader of the children and the flourishing Stepping Stones. We are so fortunate to have Jenny Saynor as the prime mover together with Stephen Spencer and know that Andy has every confidence it will go forward in their capable hands. There are growing congregations at the Family Services thanks to all of their efforts. The start of the year saw the TRIO project which was intended to make the village aware of the need to engage in church affairs and finance and ensure that the church in every aspect prospers and is present for them when they need it at all stages of their life. It is a little worrying that the numbers on the Electoral roll have dropped as this is the only way that parishioners can have a say in the running of the Church. Our Churchyard is looking wonderful. We are greatly indebted to Mick Rhodes and his team for their help in the clearance of trees. The star turn is Jeremy Kendall who has taken it on as if his own and has been seen many a day, throughout the summer, toiling away – Thank you. But also thank you to all those who care for the graves on a regular basis. In early June we started to have the Church open daily and are indebted to those who have taken on this duty a day a week each. On the first Monday in the month there is someone sitting in from 10 until 12 in case anyone wishes to have an experienced listener – not a Counsellor. The Hog Roast landed on a day of biblical rains! Despite this a small profit was made and thanks go to all the helpers both on the day and in the weeks before. The last event of huge importance was the presentation of the NADFAS Church recording book. Jane Hedley spoke about the work that went into its preparation and it is available for people to read on request. It is a beautiful record with lovely photographs of the Church and its features and has fascinating details. Our thanks to all who gave so freely of their time over the two year preparation. The Christmas Fayre has been organised by Rev Stanley Menzies and Mavis Wilson. Thank you so much. Chips Browning

Bramham Primary School
Bramham and Shadwell Federation “Broadening Horizons” WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT BRAMHAM SCHOOL HAS BEEN GIVEN A MAJOR FUNDING BOOST TO IMPROVE SPORTS FACILITIES Bramham is set for a major enhancement of its sporting and play provision after a successful bid to Sport England, gaining £29,800 to develop new outdoor sports facilities on our site. The funding is part of Sport England’s £18m National Lottery Primary School Facilities Fund which is helping more schools to provide outdoor multi-activity play areas across the country. The investment is designed to support those schools which are in the greatest need of improvement and will benefit both pupils at the school and the local community who will have access outside school hours. At Bramham the new investment will go towards two large areas of Safety Activity Surfacing which will include a multi-skills area and a multi use pitch, two sections of bouldering wall and further thermoplastic markings. Sue Pyatt (Executive Headteacher) said; This will provide a really flexible space that will make playtimes and PE lessons both challenging and fun for all age groups. We are really grateful to Sport England for this boost to our facilities and the children and teachers can’t wait to start using the space. Nick Bitel, Sport Active Chair, said; “Having the right space to play sports and be physically active as a child is vitally important. We are delighted to be investing this funding in Bramham to improve the spaces that will give children the space to start enjoying PE and sport. Sebastian Coe, CH KBE, the Prime Minister’s Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Ambassador, added: “A positive first experience of PE and sport at primary school is crucial to encouraging young people to be active throughout their lives, but for those schools with little or no outside space this can be extremely challenging to deliver.“ This funding will provide better outdoor multi-activity play areas at Bramham Primary School that can be used both within the curriculum and outside school hours. I am convinced this will boost the opportunities for young people to be physically active. Continued on page 35

Bramham and Shadwell Federation “Broadening Horizons” It has been an exciting few weeks in our first term here at Bramham Primary. Our WW1 theme “Remember” is very popular indeed and we have been doing lots of associated activities in curriculum across the school. We have welcomed a wonderful class of 20 children and Miss Simpson our new Class R teacher is really enjoying working with them. We have been celebrating Diwali at School and looking at some beautiful artefacts. Class R have been making intricate Rangoli patterns to help us celebrate! Key Stage 2 have been to Shadwell to see the Young Shakespeare Company Perform “A Midsummer-Night’s Dream” and lots of work has been going on in the outdoors. We have got some fantastic ideas for the wildlife section of our grounds and hope to be developing our long awaited wildlife trail in this academic year. Mrs Mosley has recently had a gamekeeper to come and help us look at our school field to see if we can try and keep our furry rabbit friends out so that we may use the field for even more activities! As you know we have been working on plans for a pre-school at Bramham, and we also hope to progress with this project before the next academic year. We would like to say a huge “THANKYOU” to Bramham Community Action fund which has agreed to make an unprecedented contribution of £9000 towards the build. This is an incredible gesture and we really cannot thank everyone in the community enough for your generous support in our bid to make the nursery a reality. Watch this space!

37 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS New Years Eve at the Village Hall By popular demand there will be a New Years Eve celebration at the village hall – see the separate item in the magazine. Due to the amount of food wasted each year there will not be a sharing buffet, but please bring whatever food you want for yourselves and bring your own drink. Entertainment will be provided by local band The Gonzos. Tickets are £10 each and will be on sale in the Village shop during December. 2015 events and bookings at the Hall We are already taking bookings for parties and events in 2015. If you know that you are likely to want to use the hall for your event, especially weekend children’s parties or evening events, please contact committee via the bookings email bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com) or telephone number (07432 330972) where a committee member can assist in making the booking. If you haven’t been in the hall for years, we can arrange for you to visit the hall to consider the amenities it offers – including the fabulous toilets!!! Car Parking at the Village Hall More and more events are being held at the Village Hall, both regular weekly classes and occasional parties or events. However, the Committee has received complaints from users that they have been unable to park their cars on the car park as spaces have already been taken and cars have parked over two spaces. The Committee does not want to restrict the car park by means of gates and barriers. Please can residents, especially those close to the hall, respect that the car park is for users of the hall. Update on Cosy Cottage We hope that the renovation works will be completed in December and that that cottage will finally be available to let in the New Year, which will be arranged through a letting agent. The Committee thanks local residents, especially on Low Way, for their patience during the building and renovation works at the cottage.

WiSE Transport Scheme update Bridget and Greg our newly appointed WiSE Transport Coordinators recently launched our pilot scheme on 1st November, a chance for us to test a small pool of volunteer drivers and users, prior to the scheme going live on 15th January 2015. We would like to take the opportunity of thanking the volunteers who have already donated their time and also ask that anyone else who may be interested in helping please contacts us. For those that don’t know, the scheme will provide a cost effective way for the over 60’s to get to medical appointments and social activities, benefiting those who would otherwise struggle without transport. Please note there is a small charge for this service, details can be obtained upon request. If you’re aware of elderly or socially isolated people in our community, who would like our help to get out and about, please let us know or ask them to call Bridget or Greg in the WiSE office on 01937 588994.
Become a WiSE Volunteer Due to the continued success of our WiSE Owl Café in Boston Spa, we are also currently in need of additional people to help serve our lovely customers and to bake cakes for us. We would also welcome volunteers for our befriending scheme. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, use hidden talents and gain valuable work experience. You will also make a real difference to the lives of local people. If you think you can help us and would like to find out more, please call 01937 588994 and ask to speak to Neil Bellamy or alternatively email info@w-ise.org.uk

Your Christmas Smile Paddy bought a donkey from a farmer for £100 and paid him in cash. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. In the morning he drove up in a fair old state and said “Sorry Paddy, but I have some bad news. The donkey has died.” Paddy replied “Well just give me my money back then” The farmer said “Can’t do that. I’ve already spent it”. Paddy said “OK then, just bring me the dead donkey.” The farmer asked, “What are you going to do with it?” Paddy said, “ I’m going to raffle him off” “You can’t raffle a dead donkey!” said the farmer. Paddy said “Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead”. A month later, the farmer met up with Paddy and asked “What happened with that dead donkey?” Paddy said “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at £2 each and made a profit of £998” “Didn’t anyone complain?” asked the farmer. Paddy answered “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his £2 back” Paddy now works for the Commonwealth Bank as a financial adviser!

41 CRIME PREVENTION PANEL I am writing to advise you that a decision was taken at the Wetherby & District Crime Prevention Panel Annual General Meeting held on Thursday, 13th November 2014 to have a name change. Over the last year or so West Yorkshire Police have gone through many changes, some of which have meant old former boundaries have changed. Some boundaries have extended and some have been removed. West Yorkshire Police are working more closely with many more Community Partnerships which does include the Wetherby Crime Panel. In view of these changes it was felt it was also time for our name to change to bring us more into line with the many other partnerships. Hence we are now being called The Crime Prevention Panel. Outer North East Leeds. This new name reflects the same area that our local Police work in. Our service to the Community will continue. We look forward to receiving information about any events you may be holding through 2015 along with any contact details for groups or clubs you feel that the Crime Panel may attend to give talks about Crime Prevention. Groups may be small or large. We are available morning, afternoons or evenings. Our contact details are below. Whilst writing to you, I would like to mention that we are also looking for more Volunteers to assist us with our Crime Prevention work. Volunteers may be Parish Councillors, or members of the public who may like to represent their Parish Council or a resident who is interested in our work. All applicants are required to complete an application form, available from the contact details below.
