Clergy Letter from Revd Trish Anslow What’s in a name?’ I grew up answering to a collection of names; ‘Blossom’ from my Mum, ‘Floss’ from my Father and brothers and ‘Pat’ (ugh!) at school. I apologise to all Pats - but I am definitely not a Pat. Mind you, I was always ‘Patricia’ for some reason, when mum was talking to someone on the phone! My last change of name was when I took on ‘Rev Trish’ for all the children in our schools. I always say that I will answer to anything that is not rude or abusive! The ultimate terms of endearment in families are ‘Mum and Dad’ or their equivalent. We have to be thankful for our family names. I am sure many of you have had familiar names or terms of endearment amongst your family and friends. It makes us feel comfortable amongst those special people in our lives. Imagine the group of apostles walking around with Jesus for those two years or so. Jesus had already named Simon as Peterthe rock. How many others had alternative names that suited their personality? Of course we will never know, but we can surmise that the group would have had plenty of banter in between the serious job of learning, teaching and preaching the Way. These followers of the Way increased in number after the death of Jesus and by the year 49 they were being called Christians; a name that has stood the test of time.
My familiar names will fade with the demise of my family but the name Christian will live forever. For the last 2000 years people have recognised this name to be something special. It is our role to carry it forward with the same sense of familiarity and pride that has sustained it over all these years. As we look towards Christmas and the celebration of the birth of a special child for Mary and Joseph we think of the selection of names that goes with any expectant parents. Joseph was told the name of their child in a dream from God. He would be called Jesus which meant that he would save the people from their sins. New parents have a hard time working out names that will stand the test of a lifetime and yet give individuality to that new child. How many of you, like me, have a ‘family’ name as your second Christian name; one that is handed down the generations, to link one to another? Most of you who have been baptised are used to calling your first names Christian names. In this secular world we should carry that with pride. Not many of us are named ‘Christian’, but we have Christian names and those are given to us to use in our life of Christian witness. So there is a great deal in a name. We carry our parents’ choice for us, we carry our names as Christian witness and we use them as an introduction to all the other people we meet every day. Rev Trish

STEPPING STONES The children made some beautiful poppies for the Stepping Stones wreath this month, as well as cards for Haymanot for her 18th birthday (in January), and practicing putting the crosses in the ‘Remembrance Garden’ ahead of the service on Sunday. We learned lots of interesting facts about why poppies are used for Remembrance, and we were so busy that we nearly forgot the juice and biscuits! The children did really well at the service on Sunday and the prayers were read beautifully. The children who attend Stepping Stones are mainly from Bramham, Boston Spa and Thorp Arch schools, as well as some little ones still at nursery. Any child is welcome to attend whether or not they come to Church…. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. Our Christmas Stepping Stones is on Friday 11th December at All Saints Church 5.30pm. We will be having a Christmas story with hot chocolate, and mince pies and some mulled wine for the adults. It’s a really lovely evening we do hope you can attend. We will be practicing our Nativity during December too, ready for the Crib Service on Christmas Eve. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor …. jen@saynor.me.uk. All Saints Church Bramham, serving Bramham’s Community for over 860 years.
AN INVITATION TO CHURCH AT CHRISTMAS Christmas is a great time for families and children when we celebrate the Birth at Bethlehem. All Saints Church joins in the celebrations and we hold three services on Christmas Eve and Day. You are warmly invited to any or all of them. Christmas Eve: 3pm CRIB SERVICE and 11pm MIDNIGHT MASS Christmas Day: 10am to 10.45 FAMILY SERVICE I look forward to seeing you. Stanley

NOVEMBER 2015 UPDATE ....communica ng with residents To All Bramham Residents: Update from the November meeting A toilet at the Senior Citizens’ Centre? In last month’s magazine we asked for views on installation of a toilet and running water at the Centre, at a cost of £25,000 to £30,000, plus ongoing increased running costs. A few people have asked if the builders working on the Woodyard site could do it more cheaply, but the cost we mentioned is actually based on their quote, and another received. Please do give us your views – is it worth spending this much? National Grid: Thank you to National Grid who funded the recent completion of groundworks round the pavilion as one of their community projects. The building now looks nicely finished off, and the sloping grassed area is much more attractive and safe for children. Headley Hall: Thank you to residents who have made their comments on Leeds City Council’s proposed housing sites, which still includes Headley. Although the University has withdrawn the land it is likely that there will be pressure on them to change their minds. Dog Fouling: We are in the process of arranging new signage on the playing field, and another bin. There will also be an increase in patrols by the dog warden who can impose fines. Hopefully this will reduce the amount of dog fouling. As always, we recognize that most dog owners behave responsibly and that the problem is caused by the few who do not. Events on the playing field: The Council has agreed to allow a maximum of 2 ‘large’ private events per year, for up to 200 people, on the playing field, eg a wedding using a large tent/marquee, on a trial basis. We recognize that parking would need to be controlled and managed, using the field, not Freely Lane. If you are interested please contact the Pavilion Committee on 07731 822562 for details. This is in addition to community events such as the Gala. December meeting: As in recent years we will provide teas & coffee and mince pies at our December meeting. To allow room for residents we will hold the meeting at the pavilion in the Phyll B meeting room. Everyone is welcome to attend. Wednesday 2nd December, 7.30 pm, in the Pavilion. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. A HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A PEACEFUL NEW YEAR FROM ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have supported the work of All Saints’ Church in the community and who have worked hard towards the upkeep of the Church Building and the Churchyard. Once again Jeremy Kendall has been tireless in his efforts to keep the Churchyard looking splendid throughout the year. We are also grateful to Alan Blanchard for repairing the wall in the South East corner of the churchyard and to Mike Corrigan for a beautiful new notice board. The children from Stepping Stones have enjoyed a varied programme of activities under the guidance of Jennie Saynor this year. It has been pleasing to see how they have grown in confidence in their participation in the family services. We were fortunate to have good weather for both the Beating of the Bounds Walk and the Hog Roast this year, and both were well attended. The Hog Roast raised much needed funds for the restoration of the Church Tower. A new approach to an old tradition proved to be very successful when many members of the community took part in a weekend of Harvest Celebrations. Several village organizations came together on the Saturday in the Village Hall to display and sell a wide variety of home grown and homemade produce, and on the Sunday there was a very well attended service featuring Bramham School Choir followed by a soup lunch. Thanks are due to Rev Stanley Menzies, Anne Palmer, Lin Tritschler, Lynne Marshall, Mavis Wilson and Molly Browning for their hard work which made the event a resounding success. In another departure from tradition, the annual Christmas Bazaar has been replaced by a Christmas Tree Festival this year. The trees will be displayed in Church on the 5th and 6th of December so please come and see the trees, sample some seasonal refreshments and enjoy the occasion! All Saints’ Church is open every day for all to enjoy as a place of peace and reflection. Jillian Lawson, Churchwarden

WETHERBY RUFC Wetherby’s winning run continues, at the time of writing it extends to 43 games. Highlight of last month was a 36-11 win at Goole who were second. This opened up a six point lead at the top of the table. November 14 the club hosted three teams from Harrogate Pythons, the first time three senior games had taken place at Grange Park for many years which highlights the continuing success at all levels, The firsts won 36-7, The Crusaders 21-0 and the Vets 12-10. The Junior Colts (under 17’s) continue their winning ways and the Under 15’s are in the quarter finals of the Yorkshire Cup. The Club also has a good social side and recently held a very successful Sportsman’s Dinner with former International Jeff Probyn as guest speaker. Only two games so far scheduled at Grange Park for December, the Firsts host Baildon on the 12th together with the Crusaders who host Morley. The Crusaders play York on the 19th. Admission is free. Thursday 10th December 2015 at 7.30pm (Sponsored by Wetherby Catenians) Just room for a smile - Help From God A woman named Edna, finds herself in great trouble. Her business has gone bust and she’s in serious financial trouble. She’s so desperate that she decides to ask God for help. She begins to pray “God, please help me, I’ve lost my business and if I don’t get some money I’m going to lose my house as well, so please let me win the lotto” Lotto night comes and somebody else wins it. Edna prays again “God please let me win the lotto” Lotto night comes and Edna still has no luck. Once again she prays “My God why have you forsaken me, I don't often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you PLEASE just let me win the lotto so I can get my life back in order”. Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the Heavens opened and Edna is confronted by the voice of God himself: “Edna, meet me halfway on this. Buy a ticket”

BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents’ tickets at the Leeds Festival together with any other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the Fund has allocated grants to a value of over £265,000. The last allocation of grants, based on the 2014 Festival took place in March 2015. It is planned that the allocations from the 2015 Festival will be considered in March and that this will become the normal month for allocations. The Fund is therefore now accepting applications. The closing date is 14 February To keep it simple, there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank, Bramham, LS23 6RS or send an email to colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox will then meet to consider the applications. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to new projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. Colin Pool
YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMENS ASSOCIATION Our speaker in October was Mr Bob Hirst on the art of candle making. He described how to fill moulds of various sizes and shapes with melted wax; then gave a practical demonstration, having melted a pan full of wax on our adjacent kitchen stove. While the wax in the moulds hardened, Mr Hirst answered questions from his audience and continued doing so while we enjoyed our supper, as his talk was so interesting. On the 16th December we shall be holding our Christmas meeting at 7.15pm in the Village Hall, when the speaker will be Dr. A Neuff on a “Trip to Antarctica”. In the festive mood, we shall have mince pies and a secret Santa. We would like to wish all our members and friends a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Jean Dale

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Remembrance Sunday was again a real village occasion with a packed church and a good crowd at the War Memorial Service. Groups from the local Brownies, Scouts, Beavers and Cubs attended the Services with their respective Standards, ensuring that all age groups within the village were represented. It was lovely to see so many generations present for this significant national occasion. The lesson was read by Councillor Valerie Whitbread, Chairman of the Parish Council and the children of Stepping Stones beautifully read the prayers. The children also laid a cross for each name of the fallen as it was read by Andy Beaumont and Molly Browning. Revd Stanley Menzies conducted the short service at the war memorial when the two minutes silence was observed. The Reveille was played by Simon Noble. Wreaths were laid by: Councillor Whitbread for the Parish Council, Dolly Mullen for Bramham YCA, Chips Browning for All Saints’ Church, Lynne Marshall for Bramham in Bloom, Yvonne Gibson for Bramham Drama Group, Emma Hunter for the Community Action Group, Aimee Sibley for Bramham Brownies, A Brownie with wreath made by the Brownies, A member of Clifford Scouts, Stepping Stones with wreath made by the children.
On the exact Armistice Day 11th day of the 11th month at 11 am, the Primary School attended a short service at the War Memorial, when a wreath was laid from the School and the names on the memorial were read.

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - Thursday 29th October 2015 24 Members attended plus 4 Committee Members. Ernest Nichols opened the proceedings by welcoming everyone to the meeting. Well done for achieving our second Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award. Last year’s Minutes and the Financial Report were presented and accepted. Election of Officers Ernest and Meryl Nichols (Chair and Treasurer respectively) and Gill Young (Secretary) were not putting their names forward for re-election as they felt that after ten years it was time for a new committee to take over. A new committee was nominated and appointed: Lynne Marshall as Chair, Kate Pirie, Rochelle Page, Pam Corrigan and Alison French all new official members to Bramham in Bloom. However the retiring members would be available in the coming year for advice and guidance. REVIEW OF YEAR TO SEPT 2015. Yorkshire in Bloom: Another superb Gold Award for the village, gardeners, sponsors and residents. The Church, the Primary School and many residential gardens received a special mention. High praise was given for all the floral displays, environmental responsibility and community participation. These three sections contribute towards the Award. Everyone shows great pride in the appearance of the environment in which they live. Developments: Our main aim is to enhance the village. Gala: Showcases and promotes Bramham in Bloom. Wildlife Conservation Area: Access is through the Senior Citizens Centre garden but we emphasise that children should be supervised by an adult as it could be a potentially dangerous area for children on their own. A new sign will be erected near the entrance. . Continued on page 32

The Future: A very successful Extraordinary Meeting brought forward many suggestions in ways people could volunteer. There are many activities other than planting and maintaining a flower bed. The meeting was declared closed and everyone was invited to partake in a glass wine. Special Presentations to Three Retiring Members of the Committee Before bottles were opened Lynne Marshall, Chair, and the new committee felt it was very necessary to acknowledge the huge contribution that Gill Young Ernest and Meryl Nichols had made to Bramham in Bloom over the last ten years 2005-2015. On behalf of Yorkshire in Bloom and Leeds in Bloom, engraved rose bowls were presented to Gill, Ernest and Meryl. A letter of appreciation for their unique achievement from Richard Gill of Red Hall LCC Nursery was received and read out in his absence. In addition Val Whitbread, Chair of the Parish Council, also spoke very highly of the retiring committee and wished them well in the future. A Commemorative Tree and plaque will be situated at Bowcliffe Corner to remind us all of their huge commitment and dedication to the village. For once Ernest remarked that this not only came as a wonderful surprise but that it left him speechless! They were overwhelmed by this kind acknowledgement. However he did manage, on behalf of his fellow retirees, to thank everyone concerned for their beautiful gifts He welcomed the new committee and he was sure that their enthusiasm and energy would take Bramham in Bloom to new heights At last the bottles could be opened, congratulations and celebrations were able to commence. A fitting way to end a pleasant and successful evening. If you feel that you could offer support or would like any further information about Bramham in Bloom please contact :

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL The November issue of the magazine highlighted this new initiative for Bramham as we seek to bring some Christmas cheer to those who are overlooked and who should be remembered. There are 3 groups we suggest in this appeal. 1.
St George’s Crypt. They provide 56000 meals each year for the homeless and practical support in many other ways. They would welcome the gift of warm clothing, socks, underwear, gloves, hats, scarves and jumpers.
2.
Children who are in need and miss out on the joy of Christmas morning. Bramham NSPCC suggest the following for children’s boxes: Threading Beads, Hats, Bubble Bath, Stickers, Soft Toy, Books, Gloves,
3.
Pens and Pencils, Stationery, Scarves, Novelty Tooth Brush, Badges, Wrapped Sweets, Comics/Magazine,
Play Mobile, Magnifying glass, Match Box Cars, Card Games, Socks, Lego,
The elderly, lonely and housebound in Bramham. They would appreciate toiletries, warm gloves, warm socks, scarves, small gifts chosen with imagination, calendars and books and magazines.
There are two suggestions for the Shoebox: • Find a shoebox Find a shoebox (any size will do) and place your items in it. Clearly label it for whom it is for. The boxes should be taken to Church in December. • There will be 3 collection boxes in Church labelled for the different categories in which you can place your items. The Church is open daily from 10am to 4pm. I know that you will give with imagination and with generosity. May we send our greetings in a practical way. Rev’d Stanley Menzies
