Clergy Letter from Rev. Trish
As I sit to compose this letter to you I am surrounded by lists! My shopping list for Wetherby this afternoon and my ‘to do list’ for today, (This list has the leftovers from yesterday included at the top). Once I have composed the lists, my brain will settle and get on with the day. I often don’t look at them again. I wonder how many of you have started the lists for Christmas. The shops and the television have been on the case for the last two months that I am aware of and you are being prompted about food, furniture and gifts on a daily basis. Perhaps a great season such as Advent needs more than mundane lists about our intentions towards our family gifts and food for the family gathering. Now that December is here I would like to ask you to start one more list: - an Advent list. This will not have numbers one to twenty-four on little doors and chocolate behind but it might have the same sense of anticipation attached to it. Of course Advent is the season of anticipation, there are three meanings of 'coming' that Christians describe in Advent. The first and most thought of, is all about the preparation for the Incarnation; for the birth of a child destined to be the Saviour of the world, which happened about 2000 years ago. The second happens in the present as we prepare to welcome Jesus into our lives now. And the third will happen in the future when Jesus comes back to the world as our King and Judge. What needs to go on this Advent list? Peace at some time in each day –how can we think of Christ’s birth if we are spending all our time fretting over arrangements?

4
Time to read the Bible- when was the last time you read the narrative of Christ’s birth and reflected on the momentous changes in the life of a devout young girl? Listening time – if we are inviting Jesus into our lives today we need to listen for him. In light of the opportunities to over-indulge during the Christmas period it might be an excellent idea to fast at least once a week through Advent. Fasting might mean totally abstaining from food for one day/meal or reducing your meals to very basic ingredients. All these ideas on the Advent list are purely optional, but the idea of using the season as a preparation for greeting Christ is a serious one. You may find another way to remind yourself through the busy time leading up to Christmas of the true and purposeful meaning of Advent, if so, share it with others. At the end of this season we have the glorious celebration of Christmas. I hope your own preparation time will make it a deep and meaningful time. Jane and I wish you all a joyful Christmas and a happy new year.
Rev Trish
Two boys were walking home from church after hearing a strong preaching on the devil. One said to the other, "What do you think about all this Satan stuff?" The other boy replied, "Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out. It's probably just your dad"

November 2017 Update ....communicating with residents PLAYING FIELD: We are investigating the idea of placing grass reinforcement on a small area of the playing field, next to the car park, to allow approximately 10 cars to park there when the car park is full, as it often is on Saturday mornings. Grass reinforcement is a plastic mesh that is placed on top of the grass. It can be removed. The grass grows through it and can be cut as normal. The amount of green space is therefore not reduced. We would welcome any views on this. Please email, or write to, the clerk (details below). BRAMHAM HOUSE: The Parish Council intends to invite the developers who have an interest in developing the Bramham House site to a meeting. We will keep you informed. VANDALISM: Battle of Bramham sign and Stone Very sad to report deliberate damage to the Battle signage and stone. The council have organized for its cleaning. This supports the need for plans to remove the signs and stone to a safer place nearer the village. IMPROVED LIGHTING: Better outside lighting at the Pavilion should ensure improved access and safety. POLICE ALERT There have been a number of reports of burglars using flat-roofed single-storey extensions or conservatories to gain direct access upstairs in order to avoid triggering burglar alarms. Police advice is to fit key-operated window locks to all easily accessible upstairs windows, remember to remove keys from locked windows and to keep them out of sight, and to install exterior, IRS, security lights. The Parish Council wishes you all a Happy Christmas and New Year!

Memorial Safety in Bramham Churchyard There are rules and regulations set by York Diocese for the introduction of a memorial into the Churchyard. No memorial should be placed on a grave without permission first being sought from the priest in charge. Memorial safety within the churchyard is very important and over the next few months a safety inspection will be carried out to ensure that all memorials are safe and will not be a safety issue. Memorials will be tested by qualified assessors. The memorials will be categorised Into risk areas – High, Medium and Low. Those in high risk areas will either be laid flat immediately on the grave or staked and banded. If there is a safety issue with your family memorial, the Memorial Mason who supplied your memorial will be able to rectify the safety problem and bring the memorial to the correct modern fixing standards and comply with the National Association of Memorial Masons (NAMM) Code of working practice and British Standard 8415. Please contact the Churchwardens for further information.

A SPECIAL TIME A SPECIAL PLACE …REMEMBERING A SPECIAL LADY On Friday 20th October 2017 residents from the village gathered together at the new rockery on Lyndon Road to remember Gillian Young who died very suddenly in April 2016 A suggestion was made by Gill in 2015 when she was still on the committee for Bramham in Bloom to create a garden on Lyndon Road. Gill’s family bequeathed money from her funeral to Bramham in Bloom, as a result of which we decided to carry out Gill’s wish for a garden to be situated in an area where she would have been able to see it on her way home each day. Wetherby Lions also gave a generous donation in her memory. Gill, Meryl and Ernest Nichols began Bramham in Bloom in 2005 and served the village in that capacity for ten years. She was a huge supporter of the village she cared for very deeply. As editor of the Parish Magazine she was always keen to promote the village in every way she could……’it belongs to you’ she would say. Sarah her daughter, with her husband Peter and other members of Gill’s family, friends, volunteers, gardeners and representatives from many village groups all listened intently as Rev Stanley Menzies spoke very movingly about Gill and thanked her for being such a gracious lady. A plaque in the garden encapsulates Gill’s raison d’etre…….. “For her delight in creation and her eagerness to share it” Lynne Marshall and everyone involved with Bramham in Bloom.
We are now looking for a new sponsor for Gill’s Rockery—Please contact Lynne 844767

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL
Christmas is just around the corner and preparations are underway. Once again we are having a Shoebox Appeal in Bramham to bring some cheer to some of the neediest and to those we should remember in the festive season. Our appeal will be on behalf of the homeless, children in need and the elderly in our parish. St George’s Crypt in Leeds provides 70,000 meals each year for the homeless and offer support in many other ways. They would welcome the gift of warm clothing, socks, underwear, gloves, scarves, jumpers, toothpaste and brushes and toiletries. Many children and their families receive little or nothing at Christmas and toys, pencils, notepads and items of clothing would be most acceptable. The elderly, the lonely and the housebound in our midst appreciate small acts of kindness and small gifts chosen with thought are most welcome. There are two suggestions for the Shoebox: 1. Find a shoebox or a container and place your items in it. Clearly label whom it is for. The boxes should be taken to the Church in December. 2. There will be collection boxes in Church labelled for the different categories in which you can place your items. The Church is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Last year your gifts were received with joy. We know that you will give with imagination and generosity.

The Bramham Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) is almost complete and ready to submit to Leeds City Council (LCC) and stakeholders such as Bramham Park, Leeds University, Yorkshire Water, as part of the statutory Regulation 14 Consultation. We hope this will take place starting in mid-December and, as the consultation period will include the Christmas holidays, it will last a full 8 weeks. At the same time as the submission is made to LCC, summaries of the NDP will be delivered to every parish resident with a paper survey and cover letter detailing a link to the online full NDP and also an online survey. We hope that everyone in the parish will read the summary and/or the full version of the NDP and also take part in the survey, ideally via the online version but returned paper copies will also be welcome. In addition to the online full NDP, residents will be able to view a hard copy at either the Senior Citizen’s Centre, Medical Centre, All Saints’ Church, the Village Hall, The Swan public house, Bramham Primary School and the Post Office & Shop. Copies will also be available to view by contacting Val Whitbread (Chair of the Parish Council) on 01937 541075, or Paul Marshall (Chair of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group) on 01937 844767. Once the consultation period is complete, analyses will be carried out of any representations from LCC or stakeholders and of any public comments received in the survey. Modifications to the submission draft NDP will be made where necessary before the final draft NDP is submitted to LCC. LCC then take responsibility for the statutory Regulation 16 Consultation, examination by an independent examiner and organising the final referendum with every parish resident. A minimum 50% of responses in favour of the NDP is required in order for the it to be accepted by LCC and become a legal document to be referred to by planners in respect of every application made for future development within the parish area. Please do remember that our NPD sets out our vision for future development in Bramham and will have legal status. It is our opportunity to influence any future development. It is therefore very important that it reflects your views. Please do respond.
Paul Marshall
Chair, Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group

The paradoxes of life explored at the Linton Antique Society Brought up in a world of wealth and about to marry the man she loved, Shirley Leach’s life appeared predestined. Then one day, while writing to her fiancé, she experienced a compulsion so strong, so compelling it could not be doubted or ignored: she must forsake everything to become a nun. But not any ordinary nun, as her bestselling biography relates. On 14 December at 8.00pm at Linton Memorial Hall, Sister Agatha (as she became known) reflects on the paradoxes of her extraordinary life spent at the Bar Convent in York. Entrance £7 for non-members. However, you can join the Society for an annual membership of £25 (individual) or £45 (joint), giving entrance to all the talks this season. Contact Mrs Barbara Hepburn on 01937 582243 or download the form on the Society’s website www.lintonantiquesociety.org.uk Next talk: 11 January 2018, 8.00 pm Thomas Chippendale – Master Craftsman and Entrepreneur with J ames Lomax

And the same anticipation and enthusiasm for the much-loved tradition of enjoying Handel’s ‘Messiah’ can be shared with Wetherby Choral Society in their December concert. Musical Director, John Dunford, has conducted in the region of fifty performances of ‘Messiah’, and is guaranteed to bring the same freshness and meticulous attention to detail to each and every occasion as if it were the first performance!
