Clergy Letter from Rev’d Peter Bristow WONDER AND CARE We recently learnt of the first man-made object leaving the solar system and heading out into the vast interstellar space; it will take this man made object hundreds of years to reach the nearest star. From the wonders of distant galaxies to the wonder of our own bodies, scientists are making remarkable discoveries. Most recently about the intricate nature of our genes and how these might be repaired or altered to tackle disease. Our weather patterns are complex yet the storm at the end of October was predicted before it came into being. We are learning an enormous amount about the many and delicate eco systems of the natural world, their inter-dependence and our connectedness to them. During the summer I had a long and fascinating discussion with a bee keeper who delighted in the amazing role of the bee as a principal pollinator but who explained the very serious damage being caused to the bee population by climate change and the careless use of certain types of pesticides. Our world is a truly amazing place, but are we filled with a sense of awe and respect ? We live in a world which is focussed on humans and our culture is essentially utilitarian; nature is valued because of its usefulness to us. The Book of Genesis clearly believed that we are in charge and implies that we can do what we want with the earth’s natural resources. But if we want a future that is sustainable we need to change these attitudes and recognise that all life is of intrinsic value. In place of a utilitarian outlook we need to develop a sense of wonder and care, which is both reverential and respectful of nature. I was recently reprimanded by my youngest daughter for sweeping a spider off the dining table; it made me think. There will be no real change in our world’s political and corporate power houses unless we, as individuals, change. A few weeks ago yet another major UN sponsored study strongly re-asserted that our climate is without any doubt changing for the worse, but the political will required to develop new policies will only be forthcoming when large numbers of us, practice what we believe in and are prepared to shout it from the house tops. The current economic talk is all about necessity of growth. Growth produces jobs, jobs bestow dignity and enable governments to collect tax. But little is said about growth which is genuinely ‘sustainable’. Alongside our pursuit of growth we also need to focus seriously on the quality of life. Does our growth contribute to the common good in the longer term, or is it of the ‘get rich quick’ variety ? Our local neighbourhood plans are thankfully moving in this direction. We have heard it said we “need to live more simply, so that others may simply live”. But what are we actually doing ourselves to bring this about ? Mahatma Gandhi said: “There is enough in the world for everybody’s need, but not enough for anybody’s greed.” Continued on page 5

The human population has doubled in fifty years, yet we in the West consume fifty times more than a person in the Third World. This means that ‘Western’ population is multiplied by fifty times. As well as trying to decrease our personal footprints in the use of natural resources we need to examine our life styles with regards to waste. In the last decade local authorities have made huge strides in re-cycling, but do our own individual life styles take waste issues seriously? Enormous amounts of food are thrown away every day by the food industry, while millions are on the bread line. What can we do about the food waste we generate? Since the 1950s our Western life style has brought immense material blessings and is inevitably a huge magnet for economic migration. But we have also lost a lot of other perspectives in the process. Too many people’s lives are blighted by busyness and stress. There is too little time in which to relax. People are working incredibly long hours and with the pressure of work comes the pernicious pressure to succeed. As good as our schools are they are obsessed with government led league tables and targets in order to be seen as ‘successful’. It has been noted that church schools generally speaking are among the best in the land. But what many people fail to realise is they are among the best because their values reflect the education of the ‘whole’ person, not just the three Rs. We face pressures of instant but excessive communication. We live in a world where immediate answers are expected. The huge increase in mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse indicate we all need to take more time out each day ‘to stand and stare’, to revitalise our awe and sense of wonder. Christmas is a special time in which to do this. Our work life balance needs urgent attention in order to develop our spiritual lives, to reflect on the purpose and meaning of life and for the building of proper relationships with the natural world, each other, and with the God-in-Christ whose immense love lies behind it all. Even large companies such as Google and Apple are recognising the importance of ‘time out’ for increasing creativity and productivity. The loss of stillness and silence is one of the most serious of our losses in the modern world. It results in a lack of inner calmness; people are less confident, trust others less and are more anxious about what life brings. Take just fifteen minutes a day to reflect in stillness on the purpose of your life and God’s blessing and love for you. We live in an amazing world. Live ‘wondrously’ and with a profound sense of care. For the “new heaven and new earth” still lies before us. I wish you a very happy and joy filled Christmas. The Rev. Peter E. Bristow

CALLING ALL CHILDREN! Come and decorate the Christmas tree at St. Peters Church, Walton on Friday 13th December at 4pm and there will be casting for parts in the Parish Family Nativity Service

on Sunday 15th December at 10.30am BRAMHAM PARK STROLL AND HOG ROAST The date for the next Hog Roast is 19th July 2014. Following the successful event this year we are going to repeat the exercise and look forward to seeing you all in 2014 at Terry Lug Farmhouse. Following the event the money raised has been invested in work on the Tower at All Saints Bramham. The leaking tower door has been cured by installing a new door frame and resurfacing the door itself with new oak planking. This has been carried out by Russell Bean and he will be restoring the broken louvres in the fullness of time. Following the rain in late October and early November the tower was dry for the first time for many years. Because the tower is now waterproof the rotting wheel to the fourth bell has been refurbished and the rotten bell pull has been spliced allowing the bell to be rung again in November. Many thanks to Paul Topping and his hard working team of ringers. We have plans to make access possible to the tower parapet and Russell is drawing these up in the hope that this will be approved by the authorities and allow us to fly the flag once again. Thank you all for your continued support without which it would be impossible to have aspirations to maintain the fabric of the Saxon All Saints and keep it safe for future generations of Bramham villagers. The Churchwardens and members of the Village Church Council wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Healthy 2014

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk ....communica ng with residents To all Bramham residents - Here is the update from our November Parish Council meeting and latest developments: Option Agreement Monies – open event and grant application process: Last month we reported that we have received £278,000 from Leeds City Council for the sale of the strip of land along the playing field. The Parish Council has now agreed a process for village groups to make applications for projects and to put forward ideas. On the evening of Friday 7 February and on Saturday 8 February we will be holding an open ‘drop-in style’ event where you can both put forward ideas and give your views on ideas put forward by others. There will also be further information about what sort of projects the money can be spent on, and other funding sources. Application forms will then be made available for formal applications, with a closing date of end of March 2014. Not all of the money will necessarily be spent as a result, this depends on the outcome of the event and the applications received. Also, as previously reported the Council has ring-fenced £58k for completion of the pavilion and £50k for return to the Community Fund as previously agreed with the BSLA. Please start thinking now! If you are a village group considering a project, be ready to tell the village about it at the event. The parish council has been advised that there are some restrictions on how the money can be spent. It must be on capital spend, providing a long term asset for the village or an improvement to the village. Grants can be awarded to voluntary groups but not individuals. As this event is all about the future of our village we will also use the event for Neighbourhood Plan engagement – getting your views on what matters to you – what you like about Bramham and what you think we need for the future. This is a very exciting time for Bramham village and we very much look forward to hearing from community groups about their ideas about how we can use these funds wisely to develop our village and use our funds for the benefits of all. Playground replacement: The Parish Council is considering replacement of the playground as a project to be funded in part from the option agreement monies. We will be consulting with both adults and children’s groups on what ideas you have for the playground, and what sort of equipment you would like to see, and applying for matched funding (ie funding from another source of grants to match the amount we as a council would spend). Pavilion and Playing Field: The Parish Council continues to make every effort to resolve the legal situation with the BSLA to allow completion of the pavilion. The matter is with the respective parties legal advisers and it is hoped will be resolved as soon as possible. Bowcliffe Road surface: We have continued to press Leeds City Council to resurface Bowcliffe Road. It is on their plans but not until the 2014/2015 programme. They advise that in the meantime they will continue to fill in pot holes as necessary. We will continue to report problems but residents can also do so online at www.leeds.gov.uk and follow the link ‘report a pothole’ Next Meeting: As in the last 2 years we are holding our December meeting in the Village Hall supper room so that more residents can join us for a cup of tea or coffee and maybe even a mince pie! Wednesday 11 December, 7.30 pm in the Supper Room of the Village Hall.

Bramham Parish Council wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We hope you find this update useful. 17 Want better Broadband in Bramham? Fed up of slow internet speeds? Can’t watch BBC i-player or YouTube without buffering?

You need to register NOW! Last month every household received a leaflet about improving the broadband speeds in Bramham.

HAVE YOU REGISTERED YET? BT have been given the contract for fibre optic broadband in this area and will begin the upgrade based on demand, so the areas which have the most number of requests for better broadband on the Superfast West Yorkshire website will be upgraded first. At the moment Bramham is at the end of the queue, and we may not even get upgraded by 2015 unless we as a community do something about it. To register for better broadband go to http://www.superfastwestyorkshire.co.uk/public/register-resident-demand The more people who register – the quicker we will get fibre optic broadband – if they think we are not bothered, we will not get it.

REGISTER NOW! MONDAY CLUB The next Monday Club is on TUESDAY

10th December (please note the change of date, due to the Pantomime) This will be the Christmas Party, so try and only have a light lunch before you come as we will be supplying an extra special afternoon tea. We would like everyone to be seated by 1.30 pm. If you would like a lift, please contact Mavis on 842321

Please note there will be no meeting in January, just in case we experience snowy weather. Mavis would like to wish all Members and helpers a Very Happy Christmas and a Healthy 2013 and to thank everyone who has helped in any way during the year.

OPEN DAY 7th and 8th February 2014 Bramham Village Hall Bramham Parish Council have £278,000 from the sale of the strip of land on Freely Lane and we want you as residents to help us decide how to spend it. So what happens next? There will be an open day for the village on the 7th/8th February when full details of the grant process will be available & community groups will be given the opportunity to display to the village their ideas for future projects. Residents can pop in and let us know what matters to you, what you like about Bramham, what you think we need for the future and how you would like to see the funds distributed in the village. Put your thinking caps on… •

Do you have a project / idea that you think would benefit from some grant funding? Start to give some thought to what you would like to do, why, who would benefit, how much it might cost and what obstacles you may need to overcome.

We suggest you contact the clerk or any councilor for a chat about any project ideas you may have so we can help advise what is the best way forward.

It may also be worth starting to explore possible “matched funds” that may be available to double the money, this would help support the application.

We want to hear from all groups and individuals about ideas for the village, if it isn’t eligible for funding under this scheme there is a possibility that funding could be available elsewhere.

The parish council are working together with the neighbourhood plan group to ensure we develop one long term vision for our village. We look forward to keeping you informed about grant applications and resident feedback and if you have any ideas or suggestions then please do get in touch. THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION Our speaker in October was Mrs Maggie Poppa on her life in retirement. After a long and varied career she found herself first a roving reporter on the streets of York for Radio York, then as a writer for a Dalesman Magazine, interviewing famous personalities, such as Dickie Bird and Pam Ayres. A most entertaining talk, much enjoyed. At our December meeting on Wednesday 18th December at 7.15 pm in the Village Hall, the speaker will be Mrs P Osbourne, on the secret life of Charles Dickens. As this is our Christmas meeting there will be festive drinks with nibbles and mince pies and a “Secret Santa”. Can we wish all our members and friends a most Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year and we look forward to seeing you in 2014! A group of YCA members starting off the Xmas festivities!

STEPPING STONES The Stepping Stones session in November was all about Remembrance. The children made poppies which were put together in a wreath which was laid at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday. Reverend Andy talked to the children about remembrance and war. He did a really good game of Simon Says and had them marching around the church like soldiers! The children also helped to write some prayers for the next Family Service - thinking about preparations that will be made on the run up to Christmas. Sophia Engley

The Family Service in December will be on

8th December at 10am.

We will return on Friday December

13th at 5.30pm for our Christmas Stepping Stones come in your PJ's and dressing gowns (adults too!), and we will be having a candle lit Christmas bedtime story, with hot chocolate and cookies as well as some Christmas crafts - it will be a magical evening with lots of fun, we really hope you can join us. Stepping Stones is open to all, regardless of whether you attend church. For more information contact: Jennie Saynor on jen@saynor.me.uk, Emma Hunter on emmaandpaul8@hotmail.com or Lisa Revolta on lisa@lisarevolta.com

35 BRAMHAM IN BLOOM AGM 2013 The AGM was held on the 22nd October. 17 people attended plus the committee. Last years minutes were accepted as read. The accounts were also accepted without comment. There were no nominations for Officers and the current committee was re elected. The meeting was almost split in two, the first part a general review and the second The Future which is the most important. Review of the year to the 30th Sept 2013 First to acknowledge the sad loss of Ruth Watson who died recently. Ruth audited our accounts and gave advice without payment. A real friend of Bramham in Bloom. Yorkshire in Bloom The result again significantly above average. The whole village plays a part as was pointed out at the presentation - Its not just about flowers. We also think that entering makes a difference to how residents respond to keeping the Village tidy. Litter is mainly on the access road but you will never get rid of the “throw it out of the window” brigade. Sponsors We have lost some and gained some but are due to lose two so please could you try to obtain some more sponsors. The collection at the Village Stores comes to around £3 per week which finances the Beck Bed The Gala As in the past we are very grateful to LCC for providing plants free of charge, and this resulted in a profit of £130. As Belts tighten we may not get free plants next year. Developments We never intended to change the character of the Village only to enhance it so there will be few changes just leaving us to maintain and hopefully improve our current displays. It was suggested that we may like to consider a small wildflower meadow Wildlife Area Since losing access from what was the White Horse car park the only alternative was to enter from the Senior Citizens Centre. The Council therefore took over the problem and we now have entry via the SCS. Martin Batt is leaving for a while on business and Frank Wood the current gardener at the SCS has agreed to take over. Many thanks to Frank and his team. Like to put on record our thanks to Martin for creating the area which will be an asset for many years to come Bulb Planting We have had to curtail this through lack of resources but would be delighted if someone would like to take it over Casual help already given We already have help from The Red Lion, Jean Dale, Alex Skinner, Simon Kelly, The Garage, Val Hall and Iris Smith. We now, however, have to look to the future and what help is needed.

THE FUTURE Ernest & Meryl have felt for some time that they could no longer absorb all the work they had taken on. They were reluctant to ask the gardeners to do more as they already contribute significantly to B

36 Continued from page 35

We are very proud of the B in B team and what has been achieved by hard work and the support of our sponsors and would hate to see it disappear. After the article in the Parish Magazine we did get 6 volunteers and 4 gardeners who agreed to do more. Volunteers Margaret Johnson, Crystal Macleod, Pauline Jacobson, Dave Hugh, Julie Smith and one other. Current gardeners who agreed to do more. Keith Howland, Lynne and Paul Marshall, Helena Buck and Paul Smith. This has been a big help and means that Ernest & Meryl can carry on a bit longer but naturally after 9 years this is short term although we would still like to be involved to some extent. We still need Volunteers to help out on a casual basis ie:• Helping out with watering from time to time • Say once a week helping on a specific bed etc etc there are many small casual jobs that would probably amount to no more than an hour per week. So please let us hear from you. There was no other business.

CAROLS ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Friday 20th December at 7.00 pm in the Senior Citizens Centre Mince pies and mulled wine Bring a torch or lantern Collection for Yorkshire Air Ambulance

37 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Remembrance Sunday was a real village occasion with a packed church. Groups from the local Guides, Brownies, Scouts and Cubs attended the Services, with their respective Standards, ensuring that all age groups within the village were represented. It was lovely to see so many generations present for this significant national occasion. The lesson was read by Councillor Valerie Whitbread, Chairman of the Parish Council. After the service in the full church when Stephen Spencer read the names of all who had died in the two world wars, Revd. Stanley Menzies conducted a short service at the war memorial, when the two minute silence was observed. The attendance at the War Memorial was the largest for many years. Wreaths were laid by Councillor Valerie Whitbread for the Parish Council, Anne Topping for Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association, Peggy Kitchen for All Saints’ Church, Mavis Wilson for The Monday Club and Pauline Jakeman for Bramham in Bloom. The Reveille was played by Simon Noble.

Stepping Stones laid a wreath at the Church Altar with poppies the children had made themselves.

On the 11th day of the 11th month at 11.00 am, Bramham Primary School attended a short service at the War Memorial. A poem was read, a wreath laid from the school and the names on the memorial were read. They were joined by members of the community who always observe the Armistice on the 11th.

38 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Lighting in the hall Apologies to those who use the subdued dimmer lights in the main hall. The switches for these lights were replaced during the bar refit but the new “light touch” switches have been problematic. Firstly becoming very hot and then cracking. The dimmer lights have been disconnected and one set of switches sent to the manufacturer for diagnosis. We hope to replace these soon. In December (weeks beginning the 9th and 16th) the Drama Group have arranged for a new lighting system to be installed both on the stage and in the main hall. A new lighting bar will be fitted in the main hall, which will require a scaffold tower to be built in the hall. The company carrying out the installation have been advised about the times all users are in the hall and have agreed to work around the users. This new lighting system will have a simple controller to allow users to control the lights in the hall and on the stage, without having to borrow the full lighting deck owned by the Drama Group. Want to take up a new activity for the New Year? The Village Hall hosts many varied groups and classes throughout the week, There is room for more, should anyone wish to start a new group. Every week there is:• Badminton on Monday evening • Art Class on Tuesday morning • Bodyrox exercise class on Tuesday evening • Pilates classes Tuesday and Weds evenings • Fitness league class on Thursday morning • Karate on Thursday evening • Little Kickers junior indoor football on Saturday morning. In addition Drama Group meets weekly on Weds and Sunday during the lead in to performances. Monthly users are:• Monday Club for senior citizens • Weds meeting of the Yorkshire Country Women (3rd Weds each month). For more information on any of these classes or groups please use the contacts below who will pass your details to the organisers. Funding Finally, the village Hall Committee will be bidding for funds from the Parish Council. If anyone has any suggestions/ideas of what needs improving, changing, adding or removing in the hall, please contact the Committee, so that your idea can be considered. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. New Advertiser this month - Page 30 - FOSTERS DOG GROOMING New Advertiser this month - Page 8 - ADVENTURE TOYS A SMILE FOR DECEMBER Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-panel energy efficient kind and they are wonderfully efficient. A few weeks ago, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them. Hellloooo,...........just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking salesman had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! “Helllooooo? It's been a year!” I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He has never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot!
