1 Clergy Letter from Rev ‘d Andy Grant I usually associate February with being the grimmest part of the year. The seasons of Christmas and the Epiphany are well behind us, and instead we find ourselves heading towards the season of Lent, which seems to get a bad press as we face the challenge of having to give things up (if we so wish). In addition, the weather is not usually very pleasant, the clocks haven’t gone forward yet so the evenings are still dark, and with spring still some weeks away, the landscape is still bare and lacking colour. So here is my attempt to bring some hope and joy into this gloomy time of the year and perhaps a more positive outlook regarding Lent will help! The Latin term from which we get the word is ‘Quadragesima’ that means ‘fortieth’ and links to the all important number ‘forty’ that relates to the time spent by Jesus in the wilderness being tempted by the devil. The season of Lent is an observance in the Church’s liturgical year of a period of approximately six weeks leading up to Easter. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer - through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. For those who don’t go for devotion of that magnitude, a spell giving up chocolate, alcohol, or some other luxury is the alternative! The whole idea of penance and repentance etc often gets a bad press because it is associated with austerity, loss of joy,

drudgery, and severity - such is the misunderstanding of what Lent is all about. Lent observance can also be seen as the preserve of the ‘seriously religious’ who are the only ones qualified to partake in such holy activity. Not so! If Lent is seen as nothing more than dutiful religiosity, then dull and dry it will be and if the myth that Lent is for the religious only, then many might be missing out on what it has to offer, missing out on a potential encounter with God. I like to think of Lent as a ‘spiritual detox’, a chance to strip away much of the frivolity and distractions of life, to put aside even if only temporarily (and as far as possible), the noise and activity of daily life that so easily seems to fill our time. Whatever our interest in religion or the church, however minimal, we are spiritual creatures who can really benefit from a bit of spiritual exploring. This year, I invite you to observe Lent as a time for reflection and contemplation, a chance to turn away from the hustle and bustle, the distractions, the confusion and anxieties of life, and get closer to God, and closer to ourselves. Instead of giving up chocolate or wine, perhaps we can give up some of our unnecessary “busyness” and make space for an encounter with the living God, who brings hope and joy out of darkness and despair. Forty days of daily conversation with God might make all the difference! Rev Andy Grant

5 BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund was created in 2003 to distribute the monies available to Bramham as a result of the Leeds Festival. It was set up by the owners of Bramham Park and the promoter (originally Mean Fiddler, now Festival Republic). About half of the money has come from donations made by residents obtaining heavily discounted tickets for the event and the other half is a donation from the promoter. Every year, a committee under the chairmanship of Nick and Rachel Lane Fox and on which the Parish Council is represented, meets to consider applications for grants from community organisations. Since the Fund was set up, it has made grants of over £230,000. The objective of the Fund is generally to support community projects and these must benefit the residents of Bramham. The Fund does not support commercial activities or private individuals. At a meeting on 10 January, the committee considered applications totalling over double the amount of funds available. It agreed to make grants towards the following projects: Bramham Village Hall

Heat and sound insulation of the ceiling, refit of bar area, replacement front doors

£14000

Bramham Drama Group

Lighting in the village hall

£2900

Bramham Sports & Leisure Association

Security system

£2300

Community Action Group Contribution to 2013 Village Gala

£2000

All Saints’ Church

£1500

Restoration programme

Bramham Archive project Additional hardware and software

£800

Bramham Scouts

Cookers and tents for Explorer Unit

£500

Bramham Brownies

Cooking and art materials

£200

Senior Citizens Club

Support for senior citizens

£100

The Fund also supported the shuttle bus between the village and the festival. Assuming that the Leeds Festival continues, it is expected that the committee will meet next year to consider further grants. Any community organisation wishing to apply for a grant should contact me no later than 1 December. Colin Pool Secretary to the Fund January 2013

Discoverers @ Bramham The January discoverers was held at a new time, and was all about Christingle. The children made 'Christingles' which consisted of an orange representing the world, a red ribbon representing the blood of Jesus, four cocktail sticks decorated with sweets and raisins, which represents the four seasons, and God’s good gifts, and to finish it off there’s a candle in the centre representing the light of the world. The children loved making their Christingles and a few of the sweets were 'accidentally' broken and so had to be eaten what a shame! After Discoverers we walked over to church and showed off our Christingles to the congregation, lighting the candles and telling everyone about the meaning of them. The next Discoverers will be on Sunday 10th February at 9.15am. There will be a theme of love and St Valentines! We really hope you can join us. If you would like more details about Discoverers please contact:Lisa Revolta - lisa@lisarevolta.com or Emma Hunter - emmaandpaul8@hotmail.com or Jennie Saynor - Jen@saynor.me.uk These events are open to all regardless of whether you attend any Church or not. It is simply a way to meet other families in the community with young children. ALL ARE WELCOME. We politely ask for a voluntary donation of £1 per child.

January Update ….communicating with residents To all Bramham residents Update from the January meeting: Snow Champions : We have four volunteers but need to double that and have a volunteer Snow Champion to get this scheme off the ground. The team would keep a key to grit bins and co-ordinate snow clearing – it won’t be too onerous - PLEASE VOLUNTEER TO HELP TO KEEP OUR VILLAGE SAFE! Playing Field: The Parish Council is arranging for a bin that can take dog waste to be put on the playing field. Hazardous waste from the bin that was set on fire has been removed. Playing Field Lease / Pavilion: We want to clarify the decision to allocate some funds to pay for legal advice concerning leasing the playing field to the BSLA. Whilst there has been no expenditure so far it is likely that we will incur some legal costs in order to resolve some important issues that have come to light with regards to the lease of the playing field. These issues must be resolved and legal advice is essential in order to put a valid legal agreement in place that protects all parties concerned, the parish council, the BSLA and Bramham residents. We want to assure residents that this expenditure will be kept to a minimum. We do recognise and share the frustration regarding the completion of the pavilion and the lack of news on the Option Agreement with Leeds City Council. Please be assured that we are continuing to liaise with the BSLA and Leeds City Council to progress both these matters to a conclusion. Once we have received responses to the legal queries raised we will send a full communication, that will be delivered via a door drop to all residents, and will also be posted on our website. The Bus Parked on Bowcliffe Road: The police have advised that as the bus parked in the layby opposite the Woodyard is not causing an obstruction or is illegally parked they cannot enforce removal. Traffic Speed Limits: The Heavy Goods Vehicle industry is lobbying the government to increase the speed limit for HGVs on our roads. Cllr Martin Batt has researched the issue in some depth and will respond to the proposals on behalf of the Parish Council with a strong view that we are against this on the grounds of safety and environmental issues. We also have not given up on the fight to reduce the speed limit by the school and are going to be working with Clifford Parish Council on a joint effort. Old Peoples Shelter: Some residents amongst those who use the shelter, have told us that they find the name of the shelter a little offensive. The Council agreed they are happy to consider renaming it and will be asking for suggestions via the website, contacting the Clerk, and a suggestions box will be placed in the Village shop.

17 AUCTION OF PROMISES CLIFFORD VILLAGE HALL 7.30pm on 8TH MARCH 2013

We are looking for Promises for our Auction of Promises which is going to be held at Clifford Village Hall on Friday 8th March in aid of the Lower Wharfe Youth Fund. If you can, bake, iron, garden, baby sit, or can offer a service that you think someone else would be willing to bid for, please consider offering a promise for the auction. St Mary’s previously held an Auction of Promises when they were fund raising for the Organ, it was a great success and people offered all sorts of things from trips to the airport, a delivery of free range eggs every week, a dinner party and other “money can’t buy” experiences. So please put your thinking cap on and see what you can offer, its great fun and you’ll be surprised what someone will pay for your promise! Please put the date in your diary and come along on the evening, there will be a supper included with the ticket and it will all help to raise valuable funds for our Youth Work. There will be more details nearer the time. Please contact Kate Lofthouse (thelofthousefamily@btconnect.com), Paul or Philippa Martin (broadyards@btinternet.com), or Kate Kennedy (ckennedy@legatomarketing.co.uk) with your Promise offers. BRAMHAM IN BLOOM

23

When Bramham in Bloom was first formed I was asked to talk to the children at the Primary School. There’s nothing quite as intimidating as a group of bright young children staring at you with a look of anticipation on their faces. I didn’t really know where to start although I had handed out a few photos and therefore asked what they thought Bramham in Bloom was about, not actually expecting an answer. Half a dozen hands shot up and a young girl said that what we were doing was to try and make the Village look nicer. Sometimes as adults we complicate things and miss the obvious. So what Bramham in Bloom is about, in the words of the young lady, is trying to make the Village look nicer and we hope that we have achieved this to some extent. None of it would have been possible without a number of dedicated people All the gardeners and helpers who work throughout the year, this year being particularly difficult with both drought and floods. There are really too many to mention individually but no doubt you have seen them out and about in the Village. At the end of the day everything that we do is down to financing and the Village owes a big thank you to all our sponsors listed below. A number have businesses in the Village so please support them :The Church The Monday Club Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Asscn. TAMARA TWO STEPPERS WHAT IS THIS “ROUND DANCING”? DID YOU MAKE A RESOLUTION TO TAKE MORE EXERCISE? Don’t fancy going to the gym? Weather not good for walking? We have the answer!!

We, Tamara Two Steppers, are looking for about 4 or 5 couples to join us to have a good time, learn to dance and do things together. We dance every other Wednesday evening in The Methodist Schoolroom, Church View Mews, Clifford. I realise that a lot a people will not have ever heard of “Round dancing” so I set out below a few details for your information. Round Dancing is a form of social ballroom dancing in which the steps are choreographed precisely to the music and those steps are announced by a “cuer” as we dance. This means that we are all doing the same steps at the same time and this makes the dancing look different from normal ballroom dancing. The steps are taught to us at our regular club nights in a very friendly way by our cuer, helped by our other club members. There is no pressure - we work at a very comfortable speed to suit everybody. The rhythms we dance are the usual ballroom rhythms, rumba, cha-cha, waltz, foxtrot, tango, jive and two step (very easy steps). The moves within each rhythm are the same as in ballroom dancing and are very simple and easy to learn. We hold our partners in the normal way and because our cuer tells us which steps to use, the man does not have to think it up as he goes!! Round Dancing is something to do together... This might be the one thing outside the home that we share. He has his job and she hers, or he plays golf and she plays bridge, but on every other Wednesday evenings we dance together. We hold each other in our arms; romantic music is playing. There is no place for criticism, impatience, anger, shouting tantrums etc....We all work together to help each other to have an enjoyable evening.... So why not come and join us? If you wish to join us then ring

Ann & Tony Metcalfe on 0113 2100896 or come along with your partner on February 9th or 23rd

27 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Village Hall Management and fundraising Several people have asked the committee if the Village Hall is registered for VAT or TAX. It isn’t. Bramham Village Hall (or Parish Rooms and Institute) is a registered charity, and a not for profit Organisation; it is not a commercial venture as it seeks only to provide a social space and to cover costs. The income of the hall is below the VAT threshold, so the charity doesn’t pay VAT, nor can it reclaim VAT paid by it. All the income from regular and occasional users is used to pay bills such as gas, electric, water, insurance, licences for music, entertainment and alcohol sales, for cleaning and repairs. Fundraising by the committee such as the recent Ceilidh, the autumn beer festival, and running bars supplements the regular income. Any surplus goes towards major repairs and the ongoing restoration, much of the work being carried out by the committee to reduce costs (though specialist work is contracted out). The 100 club is also used for restoration. The plans for the next few years prioritise the refurbishment of the adjacent Cottage (that can’t be sold), the bar area and insulation in the main hall. So the hall needs your support. Please support the fundraising events. Please consider the hall for your party, meeting etc and the committee may be able to run a bar for you, its profits being used for the restoration fund. Children’s parties in the hall at weekends are very popular. Thank you to all who do support the hall on a regular basis. 100 club We are now into our second year of the relaunched 100 club and members can join at any time. Those who paid by cash or cheque last year are invited to renew their membership with a further £10 per number. When the final draw for 2012 is made next month £500 will have been returned to members in prize money. New members can complete the application form found in this magazine on page 29 and post it to the Village Hall or hand it to a committee member. Plaques for family and friends A permanent plaque for family and friends can also be purchased for a minimum donation of £10 (you can choose your own wording in 45 letters). And Finally – bookings for 2013 are now being taken. Book the hall for your party, celebration, meeting etc. Prices of hire are available by contacting the bookings phone or email (details below), and on the “this is bramham” web site. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455 or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT.

Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is a registered charity organisation funded by Leeds City Council and the Primary Care Trust. Our aim is to improve quality of life for the over 60’s by providing community based activities, information, help and support. Our latest new venture, The WiSE Owl Café for the Community, officially opened in Boston Spa Village Hall on Tuesday 8th January. We have already had the pleasure of meeting and serving many local residents, and are delighted with the number of customers who have told us how much they like our exciting new venture. Several people are already regular visitors and we look forward to welcoming many more. If you haven’t yet been to see us, we offer a lovely selection of fresh, nutritious sandwiches, delicious homemade cakes, plus a variety of teas, coffees and juices all sourced using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers wherever possible. Our Café is a little haven at the bottom of the High Street where you can meet friends and family as well as make some new friends. Our opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – 10am to 4pm To view a sample menu showing a selection of our sandwiches, cakes and drinks, please visit our website www.w-ise.org.uk Our loyalty card offer: As a thank you for visiting us, we will award you with a WiSE Owl stamp every time you purchase a drink. Collect 8 stamps, and your 9th drink will be FREE. Café volunteers: We have now received several offers of help from local volunteer bakers, for which we are really grateful. Additional help would be very much appreciated, so if you love to bake cakes and biscuits and would like to supply our WiSE Owl Café with home-baking, we would love to hear from you. If baking isn’t for you, we are also looking for people to help serve our lovely customers and do some washing up. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, use hidden talents and gain valuable work experience. You will also make a real difference to the lives of local people. If you’d like to find out more and think you can help us, please call

Neil Bellamy on 01937 588994 or email Neil at info@w-ise.org.uk

32 Snow Shovelling can be fun! And it’s a great way to burn off some calories and keep fit. So do you fancy joining the Bramham Team of Snow Shovelers? The Parish Council are looking to join in a new Leeds City Council initiative to help keep our village safe and accessible during snow fall and we need a group of volunteers from the village. The idea of the scheme is to encourage local people to assist the Highways Services in clearing priority locations at times of heavy snowfall, helping maintain accessibility in areas we may otherwise be unable to get to. The scheme would see volunteers working under the guidance of a ‘Snow Champion’ to clear snow from footways and pedestrian areas to allow people better access to bus stops, shops and other local services and amenities.

What will be provided: A supply of bagged rock salt Snow shovels Fluorescent vests Information & advice leaflets on snow clearing Advance weather information when we receive a forecast of snow A Highways Services contact at one of our 3 operational depots What we are looking for to make this happen: A nominated ‘Snow Champion’ and a team of volunteers. The “Champion” will be the first point of contact and co-ordinate the team of volunteers. They will provide daily information on what has been done where and when and post-winter feedback on how things went. If you are interested in taking part please contact our clerk and we will be in touch. 33 BRAMHAM DRAMA GROUP 2013 promises to be a very exciting year for the group with proposed Spring , Summer and Winter productions. Spring will feature another Murder Mystery evening following upon the success of last year’s event. This year the Group will not only perform the play in Bramham but also two other villages in the area. In Summer we hope to be one of only a few non professional groups to perform a current popular comedy which has only just been released on general licence and only for a limited period – we will leave our readers to speculate on this production …. but , gentlemen …..t his will be something to look forward to ! And, of course, the year will end with our ever popular festive pantomime! For all these events - look out for more details in next month’s magazine. Meantime if you can’t wait until then and want to get involved on stage or behind the scenes ……. …….we look forward to seeing you at our……

Wednesday 13th February at 8.00 pm in Bramham Village Hall DOG FOULING IN BRAMHAM I thought that over the last couple of years that this problem had been improving but unfortunately a recent event has brought this into sharp focus again. A lady visiting the village for the first time was commenting on how beautiful the village was but then went onto say that unfortunately the overall impression was spoilt by the amount of Dog Fouling on Low Way. This is particularly disturbing because a number of senior citizens use this route to attend the Monday Club. I cannot think why this area should cause a problem but perhaps residents could keep their eyes open and report any fouling that they see, in the first instance to the Parish Council, who will then pass the information on to the correct department. The penalties are quite severe. Mavis Wilson

CAROLS ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE 2012

With the recent weather I doubt if many people were looking forward to this evening but the weather was very kind and there was a good turn out. There were a lot of children which was very nice to see and I think that they enjoyed themselves, especially the biscuits and pop !! Music as usual was provided by Simon Noble and Kevin Wilson who never seem to notice the cold, many thanks. After the singing which was quite spectacular and I believe it could be heard as far away as Clifford !! mince pies, biscuits, pop and mulled wine were provided, followed by a collection for Yorkshire Air Ambulance which this year raised £310 (see letter below). These events which bring us all together, don’t just happen, they require a lot of preparation and hard work. Many thanks to Mavis Wilson and all her helpers for organising such an enjoyable evening. Long may it continue.

35 BRAMHAM FOOTBALL CLUB Bramham FC Saturday side have made it to the semi final of the divisional cup and we expect it to be sometime in February. League wise we are currently in fifth position & will keep plugging away until it is possible to reach our goal of promotion to Division One. The Sunday side are still in 3 cup competitions having reached 1 semi final & 2 quarter finals and weather permitting, they will be in February or early March. League wise we are currently in fourth position with promotion to the top Division looking unlikely. Myself, Ted & Mark would like to thank the players for their efforts thus far, particularly with the never ending saga with the changing rooms, which we keep asking will they ever be ready. Many thanks also to Boston Spa Parish Council, Clifford Parish Council, Shaun Kavagnah of Boston Spartans FC & Sid & Alison of Clifford AFC, who without their help the football club at Bramham would have probably ceased to exist. Yours in Sport, Dave

Thought for the Month

THE SMILE FOR FEBRUARY A man came home from work and found his 5 children outside, still in their pyjamas playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers strewn around garden. The door of his wife's car was open, as was the front door to the house and no sign of the dog. Walking in the door he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, the TV was on loudly playing the cartoon channel, the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter, the fridge door was open wide, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table. He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried she might be ill, or that something serious had happened. He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door. As he peered inside he found wet towels, scummy soap and more toys strewn over the floor. Miles of toilet paper lay in a heap and toothpaste had been smeared over the mirror and walls. As he rushed to the bedroom, he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pajamas reading a novel. She looked up at him, smiled and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, 'What happened here today?'She again smiled and answered, 'You know every day when you come home from work and you ask me what in the world do I do all day?.. ''Yes," was his incredulous reply.. She answered, 'Well, today I didn't do it.
