Clergy Letter from Rev’d Andy Grant As I write this letter, we are preparing to say farewell to 2013, and welcome in 2014. By the time you read this letter, we will be well and truly into 2014 and in the grip of a dark and gloomy February. Whilst my choice of topic is itself gloomy, that of death and passing, I do hope to introduce some light and hope into a dark subject for this dark time of year. One of the traditions that carries over from the old year into the new is the act of looking back and reflecting upon the year that has passed. TV programmes and newspapers remind us of the key news events, both happy and tragic. We are also reminded of famous people who have died. It is quite disconcerting to be reminded of the famous names from the world of politics and entertainment ‘whom we grew up with’ on our TV screens, who are no longer with us. Baroness Thatcher (former PM), Sir David Frost (journalist and presenter), Michael Winner (film director), Richard Briers (actor), Alan Whicker (journalist and reporter), Frank Thornton (actor), Lou Reed (rock star) all passed away last year, and of course, the end of the year saw the death of Nelson Mandela after a long illness. Famous names with us no more; a stark reminder that death comes to all, the rich and famous, the poor and lowly, and everyone in between.
At this time of year, dark and gloomy though it is, we celebrate Candlemas, more commonly called ‘The Presentation of Christ in the Temple’. The highlight of this feast is that Jesus as a baby is presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel, and is recognised by Simeon and Anna as the ‘light to lighten the Gentiles’ (basically, the light for all peoples for all time, not just the Jews of his day). It had been revealed to Simeon by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. A stay of execution in one sense but before his own passing, he saw and recognised the light and salvation of the world in his midst. Recognition of God’s light throughout life is not always clear, and darkness and anxiety disturb us all at different times, none more so than when faced with loss. Candlemas reminds us of that light, the light which enters the fullness of the human experience with its tragedy and pain, yet a light that has overcome the darkness of human division and sin, and ultimately death itself. A light present with us through everything we will ever go through including our own death. Not an impersonal light, but God himself, who became one of us, who has a nature, personality, feelings and emotions, who understands what it is to be one of us, understands what it is to fear and face death, yet knows what lies beyond death for all those who allow his light to lighten their darkness.
Revd Andy Grant

THE RESPONSIBILITY IS OURS The first meeting of TRIO was held in the Village Hall on Saturday 11th January. The purpose of the presentation was to make the Parish aware of the fact that the Church has weekly financial commitments which it has to meet and at present it faces a weekly deficit of ÂŁ162. As with any responsible family the books must be balanced and so the Village Church Council with help from the Diocese of York arranged the meeting. It was attended by 35 people and we thank them for their offers of help and suggestions. We drew up an invitation list based largely on the Parochial Electoral Roll and realised that several people who would like to help keep the 12th Century building in good repair would be missed off, but hoped that this would just be a starting point and that with raised awareness of the problems people would come forward. We plan to hold another meeting in May this year and would be delighted to send invitations to everybody who wishes to be involved in this project. We would also wish to invite any suggestions as to how the building can be used to be more relevant to the 21st Century. We feel that it would be dreadful if this fabulous building and facility were to fall into disrepair on our watch. This would leave a huge physical and spiritual hole in the middle of our Community. We would like to take this opportunity to remind all the people in Bramham that entry on the Parochial Electoral Register is a renewable event and that any of you who have not registered in the past year need to do so. Appropriate forms are available in All Saints or please contact the Churchwardens and we will make sure a form is delivered to you. Chips Browning, Churchwarden
Do you enjoy driving and have a car and some free time? If so, we’d love to talk to you about becoming a volunteer driver for WiSE. We will soon be launching a new transport scheme, offering a service to people over 60, living in Wetherby and the surrounding villages, who are isolated, lonely and sometimes vulnerable, and unable to get to medical appointments and social activities without transport. If you think you can help us and would like to find out more, please contact Neil Bellamy, Project Manager at WiSE. Tel: 01937 588994 or email info@w-ise.org.uk

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk January 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents
To all Bramham residents – Happy New Year! Here is the update from our January Parish Council meeting and latest developments:
Resident ‘Drop In’ Event in the Village Hall • Friday - 7th February: • Saturday - 8th February:
4pm to 7pm (with tea / coffee / bar) 11.30am to 13.30pm (with tea / coffee)
Come and give us your views on potential projects that might be funded, subject to legal restrictions, from the proceeds of the sale of the Freely Lane strip of land. Community Groups applying for funds have been invited to display information. The Neighbourhood Plan Group will be there to give an update on progress and seek your views on the future of Bramham on such issues as housing, employment, transport, sports and leisure, heritage, and the environment. See full page advert in this magazine for more information. A New Playground: The Parish Council proposes to spend some of the option agreement monies on a new playground. We will also be applying for ‘matched funding’ from another source. For more information, and to give us your views, please come to the open event (see above). As part of planning for a new playground the Parish Council has consulted with playground users and local children’s groups regarding use and new equipment. We also consulted the children at Bramham School. Their school council talked to the whole school about it, and then passed on the information to the Parish Council chair at a meeting. This was an excellent contribution to our consultation and the children at the school were a pleasure to talk with. Thank you to our residents and the school. Playground inspections: For safety and insurance reasons we must carry out weekly inspections of the playground. It would be extremely helpful if a resident or two would be willing to be part of a rota, to do an inspection once every few weeks. It takes less than half an hour and you could do this whilst your children play. If you would be willing to volunteer please contact the clerk. Continued on page 11

Community Fund: We are aware that there is some confusion regarding the administration of The Community Fund (money from the sale of Leeds Festival residents’ tickets, and a donation from the organisers). We would therefore like to clarify the position. The Parish Council administers the allocation of festival tickets but has no control of the allocation of money from the fund. The allocation of the funds is decided by a group of people set up by Chairman Mr Nick Lane Fox and the secretary, Mr Colin Pool. The chair of the Parish Council is normally invited to attend the meeting, but as an individual, not as a Parish Council representative. The meeting normally takes place in December and funds distributed in January. The Community Fund Chair and Secretary made a decision this year to defer awarding funds because the Parish Council are in receipt of the option monies. The Parish Council was not aware of this decision until recently. We have asked the Community Fund if they would consider working with the Parish Council so that there is a consolidated approach to the allocation of all fund monies for the benefit of all the village groups. Leeds Festival Residents’ tickets: The council is pleased to confirm that residents’ tickets will be available again this year. Price of the tickets will be confirmed in March. The application process will remain basically unchanged and full details will be published in the March magazine. Applications will open on Monday 7th April and close on Sunday 27th April. No applications will be accepted either before or after these dates. Forms will be available on line and from the village shop on the day applications open. We will have 25 nominated tickets available this year and will also have full price tickets available. All criteria will be on the application form and will be strictly adhered to. Faster Broadband: Although we are on the programme for upgraded broadband for 2014, subject to survey, we still need as many residents as possible to register, numbers at the moment are disappointingly low. The Parish Council alone cannot make this happen. Please register on www.superfastwestyorkshire.co.uk. We are also finding out more information about other possible causes of slow speeds in parts of the village and will keep you informed. Next Meeting: Wednesday 5 February, 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. OPEN DAY 7th and 8th February 2014 Bramham Village Hall Times will be announced in next months magazine or on the Parish Council website www.thisisbramham.co.uk Bramham Parish Council have £278,000 from the sale of the strip of land on Freely Lane and we want you as residents to help us decide how to spend it. So what happens next? There will be an open day for the village on the 7th/8th February when full details of the grant process will be available & community groups will be given the opportunity to display to the village their ideas for future projects. Residents can pop in and let us know what matters to you, what you like about Bramham, what you think we need for the future and how you would like to see the funds distributed in the village. Put your thinking caps on... • Do you have a project / idea that you think would benefit from some grant funding? Start to give some thought to what you would like to do, why, who would benefit, how much it might cost and what obstacles you may need to overcome. •
We suggest you contact the clerk or any councilor for a chat about any project ideas you may have so we can help advise what is the best way forward.
•
It may also be worth starting to explore possible “matched funds” that may be available to double the money, this would help support the application.
•
We want to hear from all groups and individuals about ideas for the village, if it isn’t eligible for funding under this scheme there is a possibility that funding could be available elsewhere.
The parish council are working together with the neighbourhood plan group to ensure we develop one long term vision for our village. We look forward to keeping you informed about grant applications and resident feedback and if you have any ideas or suggestions then please do get in touch. Murder Mystery – To be performed in Bramham mid May 2014. Possibly performances in Thorner and Collingham, depending on dates and availability in each location. Audition likely to be held on 5th March in the hall (to be confirmed) French evening as part of an NSPCC fundraiser 21st June 2014. Drama Group have been asked if they would be prepared to perform a sketch based on Allo, Allo. It was also suggested that we might perform a Cancan type dance routine for interested dancers. Pantomime 2014 – we’ve had an offer from a recently retired member to direct the pantomime, The meeting agreed to accept the offer. DVD of panto 2013 is now available at £5 per copy. There will be a DVD showing for those involved in February (date to be confirmed). Income/expenditure accounts – Draft accounts prepared. Each production made a profit in 2013. Murder Mystery approx. £1000; Calendar Girls approx. £2000 (bar profits went to the Village Hall, Calendar profits went to Church, separate collection to cancer research); pantomime made approx. £4500. Figures still to be finalised. Significant capital expenditure in year on projector and screen used for Calendar Girls and available to hire, plus almost £10,000 replacing all lighting bars on stage and in hall. Community fund contributions for 2011 and 2012 paid £5000, remainder out of retained profits. Funding applications – the Community Fund has decided to postpone the distribution of 2013 funds pending the decision of funding to community groups by the Parish Council. Funding may be requested for a permanently installed PA system, stage flooring (need to consider covering for stage extension), storage and rationalisation what is being stored in the hall, new lighting deck to be able to fully run all the lights at the same time (we can’t currently run the all the LED lights independently on the existing desk), new black curtains, new stage extension. Junior Drama Group – Members said they would be happy to keep the Junior Drama members involved via a monthly meeting (possibly Monday or Thursday tea time) using music, dance and scripts. We need to consider how we get CRB checks done for all adult members.

WANT BETTER BROADBAND IN BRAMHAM? Fed up with slow internet speeds? Can’t watch BBC i-player or YouTube without buffering?
You need to register NOW! Last month every household received a leaflet about improving the broadband speeds in Bramham.
HAVE YOU REGISTERED YET? BT have been given the contract for fibre optic broadband in this area and will begin the upgrade based on demand, so the areas which have the most number of requests for better broadband on the Superfast West Yorkshire website will be upgraded first. At the moment Bramham is at the end of the queue, and we may not even get upgraded by 2015 unless we as a community do something about it. To register for better broadband go to:-
http://www.superfastwestyorkshire.co.uk/public/register -resident-demand The more people who register – the quicker we will get fibre optic broadband – if they think we are not bothered, we will not get it.

Jacqui Turner Kate Lofthouse No Service Yvonne Gibson
Anyone who is unable to read on their allocated day please contact Andy Beaumont on 541353 The very first Valentine card - a legend The Roman Emperor Claudius II needed soldiers. He suspected that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars, so he outlawed marriage. A kind-hearted young priest named Valentine felt sorry for all the couples who wanted to marry, but couldn’t. So secretly he married as many couples as he could - until the Emperor found out and condemned him to death. While he was in prison waiting execution, Valentine showed love and compassion to everyone around him, including his jailer. The jailer had a young daughter who was blind, but through Valentine’s prayers, she was healed. Just before his death in Rome on 14th February, he wrote her a farewell message signed ‘From your Valentine.’ So the very first Valentine card was not between lovers, but between a priest about to die, and a little girl, healed through his prayers.

25 YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM POSTER COMPETITION 2014 Once again Bramham in Bloom asked the Primary School to design a poster to be displayed in houses on the judging route to show support for Bramham’s 2014 entry into Yorkshire in Bloom. We have said this many times before but it is Bramham as a community that is judged not just Bramham in Bloom. As with last year the quality of the entries was very high and the photo below shows the prize winners. As usual prizes were provided by Richard Gill from LCC Parks and Countryside and we are very grateful for his continued support. The prizes this year consisted of bird seed a bird feeder and a nesting box. The young people were very excited about being able to help improve the wellbeing of our wildlife.
PRIZE WINNERS: First: Lauren Ball, Second: Thomas Potter, Third: Misha Kitchen Highly Commended : Ella Ritchie, Commended : Emily Beaumont Because of the quality of the entries two more prizes were presented by Bramham in Bloom entitled“ Ernest’s Prizes “ - Leo Holmes and Daisy Aspinall Bramham in Bloom Committee

27 JOAN BYE We remember with love and affection Joan Bye, who died on January. 13th aged 97. Joan was organist for many years at Bramham Church and also played at various other churches in the area, including the prison. She was a member of the original Bramham Village Players set up by Arthur Tindall. Although she had been housebound for a number of years, she still kept very cheerful and was full of fun, and still turning out her supply of jokes, even to the nurses during her last days in hospital. People who knew her, were aware of her jokes. She was told on many occasions that she ought to put them in a book and sell it for Church Funds! She loved beauty in every way particularly flowers and music. It was appropriate that the Church was decorated with spring flowers for her funeral, which she particularly loved. Revd Stanley Menzies recalled the Chinese saying about the lady who had only two pennies left, she spent one on a loaf of bread and one on a flower, The bread will give life and the flower a reason for living. Joan was such a lady. Joan loved poetry and had written many during the years. She wrote the one shown below two years ago, when she was 95. Her son Tim read this at the funeral service.
Days of Yore (time long past) Life’s not the same as in the days of yore, cos bits of me don’t work anymore! Once upon a time I could run up every stair, now there’s a lift and I sit on a chair! As for washing, my best trick is to stand at the sink with a sponge on a stick! Boy oh boy, I sure could preach on the parts that this jolly old sponge can’t reach! Then there’s dressing - its been said that the easiest way is to sit on the bed! But when I think I have reached my goals, all the buttons are in the wrong holes! Going out, well that’s a lark, finding somewhere to park a pram that’s got no baby in but a seat with a lid to hide the Gin! Trailing home on wearied feet, looking forward to something to eat, I sink my teeth into steak so rare, only to find they just stay there! Life however has amends, I have kind and wonderful friends. A splendid family far and near, surrounding me with love and cheer. Still I have to say once more, life’s not the same as in days of yore!

29 CAROLS ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE 2013 Unfortunately the weather was very unkind this year but the turnout was very good which shows that this event is now firmly established. Even our musicians Simon Noble and Kevin Wilson had to take shelter which is unusual for them. As last year there were a number of children who even did the collection for Yorkshire Air Ambulance which raised ÂŁ334.
Despite the weather the singing was great and there were a lot of smiling faces. Yes we’re tough in Bramham !! Many thanks to Mavis and her team who once more provided mince pies and mulled wine. Clearly a lot of hard work goes into organising such a very special event. Thanks also to Revd. Stanley Menzies who organised and led the singing.

31 THE 2014 CALENDAR FOR BRAMHAM The project for this year was far different from our usual approach. The Drama Group approached us during 2013 to offer to run the Calendar for church funds, with photographs of the cast of The Calendar Girls. This production was shown in Bramham in July. This was very different to our previous calendars, and we are very grateful to Alison Mackie for producing the Calendar and to the cast of the Calendar Girls for being brave enough to pose for photographs. Also thanks to Alison for finding sponsors for the months. The majority of the calendars were sold at the three shows of the Calendar Girl play but we would also like to thank Lyn at the Village Shop who also sold the calendars for us. She also sold Christmas Cards in aid of All Saints’ for which we give our thanks. Although the shop is still selling last minute calendars, we are now looking forward to next year!! 2015!! We are reverting back to our usual method of producing the calendar. We look forward to receiving all your photographs, which in September will be judged by a professional photographer. So start snapping! and hand your photographs in to the Village Shop, Gill Young or Revd. Stanley Menzies as soon as you like. Just be sure that your name and address is clearly displayed and the photographs show scenes of Bramham Village, or anything appertaining to village activities. Remember this is a Bramham Calendar, and we would like all the photographs to depict the village in some way. For more information please contact Gill Young 01937 843129 or Revd Stanley Menzies 01938 541047. We welcome all positive ideas for this venture.
BEATING THE BOUNDS This is being arranged for Saturday 26th April, so please try and keep the date free. Last year we had a good turnout and lovely weather, so lets hope it happens again. Watch our for details in next month’s magazine.

STEPPING STONES Stepping Stones Friday 10th January All Saints Church Bramham The first Stepping Stones session of 2014 was about baptism. Reverend Stanley Menzies came to talk to the children about baptism. This was very poignant, because Stanley was baptising his Great-Grandson Oscar the following Sunday at All Saints Church. Stanley explained about the baptism service, the font, the water, the oil and why these are done in this way.
Afterwards, whilst Mums, Dads, and Grandparents enjoyed tea, coffee and biscuits, the children had a fantastic time getting messy with poster paint, brushes and sponges creating their version of the River Jordan – complete with fish. After that it was time for juice, biscuits and a little play before going home to enjoy the rest of their weekend. The following Sunday during the Family Service which included Oscar’s Baptism, the children were able to show their hard work to the congregation. The children also took turns in reading out their prayers, they all did very well. The next Stepping Stones session is at All Saints Church, Bramham 5.30 – 6.30pm on Friday 7th February. We hope you can join us, all are welcome. These sessions are becoming more and more popular, and it is fantastic to see children from Bramham School, Primrose Lane, St Mary’s and Lady Elizabeth Hastings (Thorp Arch). Don’t forget, Stepping Stones is open to all children regardless of whether they attend any church or not. All Saints Church is your Church, serving Bramham’s community since 1150. Jenny Saynor
35 FOLLY ALLOTMENTS ABERFORD ROAD, BRAMHAM An Allotment Update 2014 Happy New Year to everyone especially to our new plot holders! There was an excellent response to our article in the November issue of Bramham Parish News, which advertised the vacant plots on the allotment site located at Aberford Road. We are in the very fortunate position of having let all the plots that were available at that time, and now have a short waiting list. The list is always open to Bramham residents who may like to join us or perhaps even share a plot as they become available. 80% of the existing plot holders are now members of the Folly Allotments Association, which is now affiliated to the National Allotments Society. We look forward to working with other allotment holders across Yorkshire to develop our skills and knowledge.
Thanks to Mike Corrigan, we now have a splendid sign and noticeboard at the entrance to the allotment, and hope that this will enable more people from Bramham to be aware of what is happening on the Folly Allotments. Many new holders have made an impressive start to their new-found hobby and we’d like to thank them for their friendliness and enthusiasm at the beginning of this New Year. May it prove to be “fruitful” for one and all. Contact details Paul Marshall (Sec.) tel. 01937 844767 email phmpm@sky.com
36 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS New Year, New ideas for the hall. The Community Fund and Parish Council have both invited local community groups to consider how funds can be used for the benefit of the wider community. We would like to know how readers of the parish magazine and users of the hall think that facilities can be improved. The Village Hall Committee has an ongoing schedule of work that it wishes to complete. This includes internal roof insulation to prevent heat loss from the main hall, and a new roof on the supper room to prevent water ingress and damp. Other suggestions are more white goods in the kitchen including a freezer, a dishwasher and an industrial cooker. Storage is a huge problem at the hall with tables and chairs stacked around the building, so easy access to the cellar which provides a good dry storage facility is also needed. Please let us know what we can do to improve the facilities at the hall for YOU. This will allow us to bid for funds from the Parish Council and Community Fund. Want to take up a new activity for the New Year? The Village Hall hosts many varied groups and classes throughout the week, There is room in the diary for more classes or activities during most days should anyone wish to start a new group. Every week there is:• Badminton on Monday evening • Art Class on Tuesday morning • Bodyrox exercise class on Tuesday evening • Pilates classes Tuesday evening and Weds evening • Fitness league class on Thursday morning • Karate on Thursday evening • Little Kickers junior indoor football for under fives on Saturday morning. In addition Drama Group meets weekly on Weds and Sunday during the lead in to performances. Monthly users are:• Monday Club for Senior Citizens • Wednesday meeting of the Yorkshire Country Women (3rd Weds each month). For more information on any of these classes or groups please use the contacts below who will put you in touch with the organisers of each event. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. Find and follow us on Facebook or twitter or see www.thisisbramham.co.uk..
37 BRAMHAM CHURCHYARD We would like to thank all those people who have helped us to tidy and clear the churchyard during 2013. We feel that there has been a marked improvement and we hope to continue to keep the area under more continuous mowing so that we do not have an overgrown area to tackle in the late summer. This should keep the whole Churchyard tidier for everybody to enjoy. We have been greatly impressed by your efforts to keep the graves well tended and supplied with flowers and thank you for this work, which we all know takes time out of busy schedules. By the Diocesan Churchyard Regulations we are allowed to leave Christmas wreaths in place for two months and are then supposed to clear them away. This is also desirable as many of them have wire frames which will damage the mowers and strimmers. We will therefore have a clearing session on Saturday 8th March and would ask anyone who has decorations/flowers which they wish to keep to take them away before then. We appreciate that in our August clearing we took away some decorations that people felt should have been left and have no wish to cause any of you distress in this matter. Please be aware that we are bound by regulations from the Diocese of York and that if you have any queries about what is allowed to be put on the graves please do not hesitate to contact us. Finally if there are any villagers who have the time and energy to help maintain the Saxon Graveyard of Bramham please contact the Churchwardens and we will happily use your enthusiasm to the benefit of the village. It may be more satisfying and certainly cheaper than going to the gym. Chips Browning, Churchwarden
THE ESSENCE OF A GEORGIAN GENTLEMAN REVEALED AT THE LINTON ANTIQUE SOCIETY How did you recognise a gentleman in Georgian society? Not just by how he spoke and acted but by his interests and the things he acquired to define and demonstrate his status. Historian Dr David Allan has made a detailed study of one such gentleman, John Custance (1749–1822) who lived near Norwich. In an unusual presentation at 8.00pm on Thursday 13th February at Linton Memorial Hall, Dr Allen will show a variety of items associated with Custance, that showed him to be the essence of a Georgian gentleman. Non-members welcome: entrance £3.00 on the door. Annual membership of the Society is just £15.00 - contact Mrs Barbara Hepburn on 01937 582243 to join. Thought for the Month God made rainy days so that gardeners could get the house-work done Anon.
YOU CAN NEVER TELL! Now that Christmas is over, my friend John was talking to a group of friends about the drinking and driving problems and he felt he would like to share his personal experience with everyone . As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends. Well, two days before Christmas, John was out for an evening with his friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Although feeling jolly, he still had the sense to know that he may be slightly over the limit. That's when he did something that he’d never done before - he took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past and he arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise, as he had never driven a cab before. He didn’t know where he got it and now that it's in his garage, and he doesn’t know what to do with it !!!!!!!
