3 Clergy Letter from Rev’d Trish Anslow As I write this letter to you all it is the Epiphany. How time flies when you are having fun! The days of the holiday went deliciously slowly, but here I am at the beginning of January. Amazingly, in the wink of an eye, by the time you read this magazine the season of Christmas will be drawing to a close! The Christmas season closes with the festival of Candlemas or the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and the parish of Lower Wharfe will be celebrating this festival with the Christingle service at Walton on Feb 1st. Most of you will know the significance behind the christingle; the orange showing the world, the red ribbon enclosing that world with Christ’s blood given for us all, the candle to send his light into the world and the goodies on the sticks to show the bounteous gifts we have been given. The biggest message of all is how we translate this knowledge into our everyday lives. The world is a big place; are we able to take ourselves out of our small neighbourhood view and think of all nations and their inhabitants? If Jesus makes a difference in our lives, multiply that by the seven billion that populate the whole world and think how tremendous that influence can be. To encircle the world with that river of blood takes a leap of faith. One man’s sacrifice works miracles even today. How many people are working in how many
countries to keep that faith alive and not allow the sacrifice to be empty? In a dark space one small lighted match will have dispelled the darkness. The candle on the top of the orange is very big in comparison to the dimensions of this orange ‘world’; are we the ones to make that shining difference in our world? Think how many people are using their light of Christ to work in this world; those of many nations, including this one, fighting the ebola virus; aiding the victims of war; digging wells in a desert? They all need our help in prayer, money and interest to keep that light burning. Our planet is a wonderful place with resources aplenty. The big ‘but’ is the distribution of these gifts throughout the world. Historically humans have been the witnesses of greedy nations and ones who have turned a blind eye to the struggles of others. It would be fantastic if we could divide and supply these resources as easily as putting them on cocktail sticks and evenly spread them around the world. A way to help in the spreading of resources is for each of us to lend a hand. We could buy Fairtrade products; we can reduce the air-miles of many goods by refusing to buy fresh food goods out of season. Being the greedy ones has become as easy as picking things off a shelf in the supermarket! When you have decided how your Christingle can influence your life and chosen paths to take be sure to translate these decisions into actions; the first of these being to share ideas with others. Redistribute ideas, resources, wealth and love around the planet; share the good and the difficult and as your light shines remember how it was started.
Rev Trish

5 PRESENTATION OF NADFAS CHURCH RECORD TO ALL SAINTS BRAMHAM ON SUNDAY 2nd NOVEMBER 2014 The introduction was very impressive and I thank Peter for his research into our work. It was very exciting to speak from such a glorious pulpit and this was the first time I had been invited to use one. A NADFAS record is a book containing details of all the items inside the church, with their dates, history, maker and donor with photographs. This one has been undertaken by a group of volunteers from the Leeds branch of the Decorative & Fine Arts Society. It has taken two years, working every week in this lovely warm church with help from parishioners and Bramham residents. They have worked many hours researching and documenting apart from the time spent in the church. I am delighted to see most of the team here today together with James Lomax, Leeds President, and Susan Behrens who oversees all records in the North-East, their presence today being a testament to the completion of a record. The Archdeacon has sent her apologies and thanks us for all our hard work. Every church we have recorded has a unique atmosphere and in Bramham I have been struck by the number of gifts and donations to the church by local people. This continues to the present day and surely reflects a deep love of the church by the village community. Five copies of the record are made and these go to- the church, the Borthwick Institute at York University, the V&A library, Church House in Westminster and English Heritage. The aim is to produce these for national Archives, not just for the church. They are used by researchers,
historians, architects, insurers and the police. A chalice was found in an antique shop in Brighton, and there was a case where a marble bust was stolen from a church in Kent. This turned up at Newark Fair and then Sotheby’s where it was recognised. The key fact that established its real home was that the recorders had noted a small chip on one side as we always record the exact condition, so it was returned to the church, where it has been secured. An indication of the value of Church records can be gained from the following messages; Richard Chartres, our vicepresident says“NADFAS Church Recorders are in the first rank of volunteers who render a great service in preserving the ecclesiastical heritage of our country.” The V&A say “It is most fitting that these documents of Britain’s religious culture are accessible to scholars in our reading rooms” and the Head of Archives at English Heritage says “the value of the records to researchers will increase and we will ensure they are available long into the future.” Due to its position in the country Bramham is steeped in history. It is the fourth out of our six to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. People fleeing from the plague ended up here, as did stragglers from the Battle of Towton in 1461, Cromwell trained his Ironsides on Bramham Moor before the Battle of Marston Moor in 1664. As recently as 1745 troops mustered here to fight the Scots. The most amazing connection with history for you to ponder is the Arches in the North Aisle were built in 1150, which was 20 years before Beckett’s murder in Canterbury. Continued on page 7

I am often asked to point out particular treasures in a church. First of all you have a fine medieval door- this is apparent as the planks inside are horizontal and outside they are vertical; check this when you leave and look out for others when visiting churches. In the lancet window first on your right in the chancel is a depiction of Moses with horns on his head. They are not horns but when he came down from the mountain he was shining with God’s light and the Hebrew word shined was the same as horned and Jerome’s translation stuck, so ever since then artists have depicted Moses with horns. There is a large statue by Michelangelo with horns and the people were horrified. You will see this again if you look out for them; in Allerton Mauleverer church there is a painting over the chancel arch with very clear horns. Bramham was the first parish in the area to have a war memorial and the Lady Chapel
and the wonderful screen were designed by Charles Nicholson, a top London designer in 1920. In 1853 a large refurbishment was undertaken and all Bramham residents had to pay 7 pence in the £ towards it. The 15th century pews were removed and the current ones installed. Luckily the woodwork was kept and in 1939 this pulpit was made from the old pews and also as you can see the clergy stalls. It’s amazing that this carving was done by someone 600 years ago. There is a further example of this recycling at the back of church for you to discover. To finish today I would like to read you the inscription on a floor slab in the chancel. It is for Ann Linley who died in 1658 and her husband has written thisShe is now dead and in the grave doth rest No doubt I hope her soul with God is blest O would to God that I with her may aim To purchase heaven and get eternal fame Obviously an ambitious husband. WONDERFUL NEWS! As many of you will have heard Fr. Peter has been appointed as one of two international Honorary Canons to link Bishop Cyril’s new diocese of Asante Mampong in Ghana with the Church of England. Bishop Cyril’s new diocese is part of the world wide Anglican Communion and he is eager to continue the links he has made with our parishes and also links in the south of England. Fr. Peter will be setting up links with local institutions, including schools. He will support Bishop Cyril in ecclesiastical legal affairs for the diocese and will be a valuable source of information for the new diocese. Some time in 2015 Fr Peter will be invited to Ghana to be installed as Honorary Canon at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Mampong. He will spend about three weeks in the diocese touring institutions and setting up links. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to create direct links and we all wish Peter all the very best. For clarification, he will remain as the vicar of the Parish of Lower Wharfe and his work here will continue. His new official title is Canon Peter. Whilst Canon Peter is visiting Ghana operations here in Boston Spa will be maintained by Rev. Trish Anslow and if you have any queries Sarah in the parish office is always happy to help.

STEPPING STONES We started the new year with a Stepping Stones based around the Baptism of Jesus. Rev'd Stanley gave an interesting talk to the children around the font, telling them all about baptism. The children listened with great interest and then went off to the craft table to make tissue paper doves with a magnetic backing which they could take home and stick on the fridge. The older children made origami doves. They all worked really hard and made some beautiful birds. After some refreshments, Kate Kennedy (Youth Coordinator for the Parish) then led the children in some drama to recreate the Baptism of Jesus. The children had great fun doing this and showed off their acting skills to the congregation at the Family Service the following Sunday, which everyone really enjoyed watching. Stepping Stones welcome all children whether they attend Church or not, it is a really nice way for the children getting together for some fun and learning, and their parents & carers can have a catch up over a cup of tea! The next Stepping Stones meeting is on Friday 6th February at 5.30pm in All Saints Church and it will be a valentines theme, and it's going to involve paint and mess so please bring a painting shirt! We really hope you can join us. Please note, the Family Service for February will be at St Marys Church, Boston Spa at 10.30am on the 8th Feb (it is a Benefice Service with Confirmation)

13 BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR THIS WINTER Margaret Brennan owner of local Wetherby-based at home care company, Home Instead Senior Care is urging local people to be a good neighbour and watch out for elderly residents. Commenting, she said, “Just think what a difference we could make if each of us stopped and took time to check on the wellbeing of an elderly neighbour.” The team at Home Instead have put their heads together and come up with a list of ‘good neighbour’ ideas; which one will you try: •
Casserole club A great idea and so easy to do! Next time you are preparing a casserole, add some extra ingredients to stretch the dish and take a portion round to a neighbour. It’s a gesture that they will really appreciate and ensure they get a wholesome, nutritious meal.
•
Lay an extra place at the table On a similar theme, why not invite a neighbour round to share a meal with you and your family?
•
Shopping can be fun Shopping can be stressful at the best of times so imagine how worrying it might be for an elderly person. Why not suggest that you take a neighbour shopping? It could be as simple as a lift in to town or helping them to find and buy the items they require.
•
Snug and Warm Pop round and ensure a neighbour’s house is warm enough and that their heating is working properly.
For further help and advice or information about Home Instead Senior Care, please contact margaret.brennan@homeinstead.co.uk or call 01937 220510.

January 2015 Update ....communica ng with residents
To all Bramham residents: Update from January Meeting New Town Development within a mile of Bramham: You may have seen in the press that a proposed development at Headley, for a town as big as Wetherby, is being considered by Leeds City Council for inclusion in its list of development sites. Headley is the small hamlet situated less than a mile from Bramham accessed from the lane on Paradise Way. This has been supported by Ward Councillors and the local MP, but not by the Parish Council and by those residents who responded to a survey last year. Concerns are that this is greenbelt land and that such a large development would not be sustainable. We will probably not know until the summer whether or not Leeds City Council is definitely approving this idea, and will need to consider the response, but PLEASE do let us know your views in the meantime. New Playground: By the time you read this, work on the new playground (on the same site as the existing one) will be well underway. If the weather is kind to us it will be completed by the February half term. Check out the news item on the website (www.thisisbramham.co.uk) if you want to see the plans. Pavilion: Thank you to everyone for coming along and making the pavilion open day a great success. The bacon butties went down very well indeed (helped by a generous donation from Bramham Football Club). It was super to see so many people there enjoying the day and having a look around the building, especially our youngest residents having a kick around and playing games on the field. Thank you again to everyone involved over the years in making the pavilion a reality, and to all who helped out on the open day. We will soon have a dedicated mobile number to call for bookings but in the meantime contact any Councillor or the Clerk. Continued on page 17

19 YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM POSTER COMPETITION Once again Bramham in Bloom asked Bramham Primary School children to design a poster to be displayed in houses on the judging route to show support for Bramham’s 2015 entry into Yorkshire in Bloom.. We have said this many times before but it is Bramham as a community that is judged, not just Bramham in Bloom flower beds. The number of posters produced by the children was much increased from the last two years. The quality of the entries were of a very high standard and it was a difficult decision for Bramham in Bloom Committee to choose the five pictures which they thought were outstanding. Although only five posters will be circulated for display in windows, the whole number of posters will be shown to the Judges whilst they have lunch with us. As usual, prizes were given by Richard Gill, Floral Initiative Officer from Leeds City Council and we are very grateful for his continued support. The prizes this year were baskets of bird feeders and related bird-seed and nuts which were won by: Lucy Skipper Catherine Spencer Natalya Aspinal Katy Harford-Cross Edith Bayton Smith
-
First Second Third Highly Commended Commended
The children picked out three extra prizes, who received a special pencil from Ernest. The posters they chose were from Zea, Lilly-Rose Wormald Nell Medley. Bramham in Bloom Committee
WE ARE STILL AWAITING THE DATE FOR THE SPRINGTIME JUDGING OF BRAMHAM IN BLOOM The following verse by Lynn Marshall will remind you of what should be done now:Springtime judging soon is here, Late March early April is really quite near, Please tidy your gardens trim every hedge, Even the verge needs a very clean edge, Pick up some litter we’ve nothing to hide Our coveted GOLD is held high with such pride!

CONFIRMATION DAY - SUNDAY 8th FEBRUARY Since last summer a group of young people and a group of adults from the parishes of Lower Wharfe and Thorp Arch have been exploring their faith and training to be confirmed as full members of the Church of England. On Sunday 8th February at 10.30am they will confirmed by the Bishop John Thomson, Bishop of Selby, at St. Mary’s church, Boston Spa. Members of all our churches are invited to join with the families and friends of the candidates in the benefice service as they take their first Holy Communion as confirmed Christians. The journey they have taken has been lively, instructive, reflective and thought provoking. They have all entered into the discussions with enquiring minds and a trust in each other and shown a great insight in their questioning and conclusions. You are asked to pray for them all as they finish the course and decide to take this step into the next part of their journey of faith.
Revd Trish

29 NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN GROUP Leeds City Council’s progress in the preparation of its Local Plan has been extensively covered in recent press reports. In the allocation of land to meet the levels of development in the adopted Core Strategy, particular prominence has been given to the proposal to develop Green Belt land at Headley Lane, in the ownership of the University of Leeds, for up to 5,000 houses. Wetherby Ward Councillors and Alec Shelbrooke MP have declared their full support for this proposal. At the previous preliminary stage of considering site options, Bramham Parish Council and the Neighbourhood Plan Group expressed opposition to the Headley proposal and their position on this matter has not changed. The Group intends to maintain an objection throughout the forthcoming stages of the Local Plan’s preparation. It will, therefore be working to further develop the case against this proposal and will be taking steps to inform and involve local residents in a campaign to protect this Green Belt land. The likely timescale for this process is worth noting. At present, the City Council is still working on the formulation of proposed allocations to meet the levels of development required in its Core Strategy and Headley is currently included in this exercise. However, actual draft proposals for formal consultation will not be published until after the May 2015 elections and, in view of the likely volume of responses from across the City, it may well be 2016 before an Examination in Public, by a Planning Inspector, can be scheduled. More information will be given in forthcoming issues of this magazine and the Group will be reporting regularly to the Parish Council in the coming months. John Lynch Chair, Neighbourhood Plan Group 13th January 2015
BEATING THE BOUNDS This is being arranged again for Saturday 18th April 2015. So please try and keep the date free. Last year we had a good turnout and lovely weather, so lets hope it happens again! Watch for details in next month’s magazine. Rev’d Stanley Menzies and Neil Ferres

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Thanks for joining us to celebrate New Year’s Eve Many thanks to those who joined in with the New Year’s Eve celebrations. A good night was had by all. The entertainment was led by local band The Gonzos, who provided plenty of music for everyone to enjoy. No decision has been made about 31 Dec 2015, though if a group or individual wanted to hire the hall to raise funds, or just to party, the committee will be happy to consider any suggestions.
A plea for the return of items “borrowed” from the hall During the last year several items from the kitchen have disappeared from cupboards. These include large glass jugs, small cut glass jugs and sugar bowls, large serving plates, cake stands, vases. It is quite possible that these have been taken accidentally by caterers or people assisting with catering at events. However, their removal means that current users can’t enjoy the same facilities.
Beer Festival 2015 The current plan is to hold the festival in October 2015 to coincide with the Rugby World cup, hopefully to show live matches during the festival. Many of our regulars would agree that watching a match whilst sinking a pint of real Yorkshire Ale is the ideal combination! More to follow when plans are firmed up.
If you held an event at the hall in 2014 and you or your caterer accidentally took any items of crockery, cutlery, glassware etc, please can you return them? The hall is in use most evenings so if you prefer to return them anonymously you could leave them in the porch. Or you could phone a committee member who can collect them (three numbers below).
2015 events and bookings at the Hall We are already taking many bookings for parties and events throughout 2015. If you know that you are likely to want to use the hall for your event, especially at weekend for children’s parties or evening events, please contact committee via the bookings email bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com or telephone number (07432 330972) where a committee member can assist in making the booking. If you haven’t been in the hall for years, we can arrange for you to visit the hall to consider the amenities it offers – including the fabulous toilets!!! And we are pleased that we have been able to retain the same hire charges for 2015 as have applied for the last few years.
Please remember that the assets of the hall are available for anyone to use at the hall, and should NOT be removed. They can be borrowed for private functions, by prior arrangement and for a small fee. News on Cosy Cottage........ in the next magazine. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. Bramham Primary School
BRAMHAM AND SHADWELL FEDERATION “Broadening Horizons” The Spring Term is an exciting one for us here at Bramham Primary with the lovely grounds once again starting to flourish. We have been doing much of our curriculum work in the outdoors since September and this new term is no exception! We hope to start work on our pond over Spring and Summer to rejuvenate the area which has become somewhat overgrown because of a hole in the lining. Do you have expertise in pond maintenance or pond planting? If so we would love to hear from you! We need help to empty, re-line and re-fill the pond with lots of lovely plants so that we can do more ponddipping and investigation into pond mini-beasts amongst lots of other fun things! We are planning bug hotels, a woodland reading area, sensory garden, boggy area and more! Please call 01937 843682 or email k.mosley@shadwellprimary.org if you can offer any assistance. Our annual school residentials are coming up with Year 5 going to Robinwood in May and our upcoming trip to Marrick Priory for Year 6 in February. We can’t wait to hear about what they have been getting up to! Years 3 and 4 are scheduled to do bike-ability training as well as year 6 this year. We also have another very exciting visit from our African friend Geoffrey from Malawi who will be coming to deliver the excellent “African Voices” programme. Year 6 will also be completing their SATS in May before setting off on another adventure to Yeadon Tarn to do Kayaking and raft building! Please feel free to have a look at our brand new website which has lots of information about school and information for both new and existing parents www.bramhamprimary.co.uk

THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION In December, we all enjoyed our Christmas Party, accompanied as it was by wine, nibbles and mince pies and cake. Because the speaker booked for this meeting had to cancel due to illness, one of our member, Mrs McGann, stepped in at the last minute to give us a talk on her early career as a nurse at Harrogate Hospital, in the days when Ward Sisters ruled with a rod of iron, She gave a very entertaining talk.. We are very sad to have learned of the death of Mrs Vera Ingham, one of our most longstanding and loyal members. Vera was the first Chairman of the Bramham Branch of the Y.C.A. when it was formed in 1984 after Bramham’s disbandment from Women's Institute, and she has been a mainstay of our group for many many years. Always available to help at social functions and to supply us with delicious cakes and other eatable when requested but also to give wise advice on all aspects of Y..C.A. work and activities. She was also a qualified Y.C.A. Judge, and will be very sorely missed by us all. Our next meeting is on 21st February at 7.15 pm in the Village Hall Supper Room, when the speaker will be Miss V. Bird, whose subject will be “Prison to Palace”.

37 BRAMHAM VILLAGE STORE NEEDS YOU DO YOU GET UP EARLY? DO YOU NEED SOME EXTRA CASH? Bramham Village Store requires someone to do the Clifford paper round. This would be a permanent position and would involve delivering approximately 35 papers taking around 45 minutes each morning Monday to Thursday and one hour on Fridays between 6.45am and 8.00am (times can be discussed) delivering papers on a circular route around Clifford village. Would require own transport. £30 for 4 hours work If you don’t fancy getting up early Monday to Friday every week there may be a possibility of the position being alternate weeks. Unfortunately if we cannot get someone who is willing to take on this position then we may have to cancel the paper delivery service that we currently provide to Clifford village. This would be a sad end to a service that has been available for many years and would be a great inconvenience to our loyal customers who would have to take their business elsewhere.
Please contact Lynn at the Village Shop Tel: 01937 842275 or mobile: 07943812650
CAROLS ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE What a great turn out for Carols round the tree. The weather was kind and everyone was in good voice. Thanks to Stanley for coordinating and Simon and friends who made the night with their music. The mulled wine flowed and not a mince pie was left. The sum of £150 was collected for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Many thanks to you all. Mavis Wilson

February Smile There was an engineer who had an excep2onal gi8 for fixing all things mechanical. A8er serving his company loyally for over 30 years, he happily re2red. Several years later the company contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their mul2million-dollar machines. They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine to work but to no avail. In despera2on, they called on the re2red, engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past. The engineer reluctantly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the huge machine. At the end of the day, he marked a small "x" in chalk on a par2cular component of the machine and stated, "This is where your problem is." The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again. The company received a bill for £20,000 from the engineer for his service. They demanded an itemized account of his charges. The engineer responded briefly: One chalk £1, knowing where to put it £19,999.
